- 0:00Welcome to North Shore News and Interviews on Amherst Island Radio.
- 0:12Each week we keep you updated on newsworthy events, happenings, and conversations that
- 0:18we've had with people in the local community and beyond.
- 0:25The Engage Loyalist platform features a number of initiatives that the Township has opened
- 0:34up for public input.
- 0:36Along with each initiative, users can find background information, current statistics,
- 0:40a project timeline, and see who among Township staff will be hearing their input.
- 0:45Councillor Paul Praterick explains the idea behind Engage Loyalist and notes some of
- 1:00the initiatives that happened in the Township.
- 1:24The
- 1:31last week or so.
- 1:32One that I would encourage people to comment on is the 2025 budget process as we move through
- 1:37it.
- 1:38A lot of times people maybe have questions but usually it's after the fact, well after
- 1:43it's established, I'm still getting questions about some spending and that's six months,
- 1:48eight months later, so get involved and engage Loyalist is just one of the many ways we try
- 1:53to engage with the local population.
- 1:55The platform asks users to sign up in order to have their say and stay up to date.
- 2:00For Amherst Island Radio and the Local Journalism Initiative, I'm Ted Evans.

- 2:15The Great Lakes Islands Alliance announced its new strategic plan spanning to 2034.
- 2:20The main focus of the plan is building the Great Lakes Islands Alliance into the go-to
- 2:24connector organization for the island communities involved.
- 2:28The plan looks to address the challenges and opportunities facing Great Lakes Islands.
- 2:32The Alliance's leadership team developed the plan over the last year.
- 2:36The four primary goals in the Alliance's foundational charter helped shape the creation
- 2:40of the plan.
- 2:41The four goals are facilitating connection between island communities, improving information
- 2:46access, encouraging multi-island collaboration, and amplifying island voices.
- 2:52With the new plan, the Alliance also looks to improve its environmental and socioeconomic
- 2:56program areas, central operations and capacity, and long-term sustainability.
- 3:02While mainly focusing on island communities, the Alliance also recognizes the importance
- 3:06of raising awareness of island life among mainland audiences, including governments
- 3:11and the general public.
- 3:12The Great Lakes Islands Alliance is set to host its fifth summit this year from September
- 3:1622 to 25, near the Les Cheneaux Islands of Northern Lake Huron.
- 3:21The summit provides an opportunity for islanders from around the Great Lakes to come together
- 3:25to learn about each other's communities and share solutions to the various economic, social,
- 3:29and environmental challenges facing islands.
- 3:32This year's event will feature more than 20 speakers, panel discussions, and guided tours.
- 3:37The event will cover a range of topics including tourism, island schools, youth engagement,
- 3:42media, biodiversity, and emergency preparedness.
- 3:46Member of the Amherst Island Community Alliance, David Pickering, notes one of the more important
- 3:50issues the island has taken on since becoming a member of the Great Lakes Islands Alliance.
- 3:54One of the things that we've discussed in detail at the Community Alliance was a report
- 4:01from one of the islander islands that actually did an emergency exercise for one of their
- 4:08islands and found that it failed miserably because of poor communications, lack of interoperability,
- 4:20and a variety of other things that meant that they couldn't achieve the exercise objectives,
- 4:26and it sort of came as a big call to wake up and start over again and come up with a better
- 4:34emergency plan because this didn't work.
- 4:37And certainly that in itself is encouraging the Community Alliance to discuss with the
- 4:47new fire chief as well as the township the state of emergency planning for Amherst Island.
- 4:55Pickering explains how Amherst Island's representative at the Great Lakes Islands Alliance, Paul Juniper,
- 5:00brought back the idea of a winter carnival.
- 5:02Probably the most significant was the entire winter carnival.
- 5:08Paul arrived at one of the meetings for the Community Alliance and said, here is the schedule
- 5:16for the winter carnival.
- 5:19They are now doing their 56th annual one.
- 5:23Maybe we could put something together and the Community Alliance hit the various service
- 5:30organizations like Ames and the Museum and the Women's Institute and so on.
- 5:37And everybody said, well, we can sponsor, support this particular event and they turned
- 5:46around and they made it into a program and they invited people.
- 5:51And apparently it was quite successful.

- 7:42The L&A Studio Tour takes place this year, September 7th and 8th from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
- 7:47each day.
- 7:48This will be the first time studios are hosting live music along with the event.
- 7:52The L&A Studio Tour gives participants the chance to meet artists in their studios and
- 7:56homes, learn about their artistic process and purchase new artwork from the artists.
- 8:01The event features over 32 artists located in 17 studios throughout the county.
- 8:06The L&A Studio Tour is a self-guided tour leading through rural areas with historic
- 8:10towns, villages and hamlets.
- 8:12Amanda Lloyd, one of the owners of the Hive Artist Collective in Bath, notes the four
- 8:17members they'll be featuring in their studio.
- 8:19The L&A Studio Tour is really cool.
- 8:21So they have over 30 artists a part of that program.
- 8:26And so only four of the Hive members will be showing in our gallery.
- 8:31So you'll really get a chance to see a little bit more from myself, Amanda Lloyd, David Slack,
- 8:39Bruce Alesskin and Shannon Dickey.
- 8:41Lloyd describes the rest of the weekend and where to find other artists in the county.
- 8:45The rest of the tour you'll be able to see other Hive artists in their actual studios
- 8:52and other artists, local artists in their studios from NapaNee and from Amherstview,
- 9:00Bath.
- 9:02It's a really, really cool, fun weekend to kind of take a local adventure.
- 9:09Lloyd notes some of the fun activities happening in the studios throughout the tour.
- 9:13You get to meet the artists and all of them have different cool things running in their
- 9:16studios like little raffles and giveaways and a lot of the studios have music.
- 9:23We have music all day, which is really cool for both days, Saturday and Sunday.
- 9:26Lloyd describes the welcoming nature of artists in their studios.
- 9:30All the artists just love chatting about their art.
- 9:32So it's always fun to have people come in and we get a chance to talk to the community
- 9:40and get to know us.
- 9:41And yeah, we just want to be, we just want to share.
- 9:45That's all we want to do.

- 10:02The first ever Bath Art Fest is taking place Saturday, September 14th, hosted by the Hive
- 10:06Artist Collective in Centennial Park.
- 10:09Over 30 artists will be featured from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. alongside live music.
- 10:13One of the owners of the hive, Amanda Lloyd, explains how the day will be set up.
- 10:17We're setting it up a little differently than other art festivals, we're calling it kind
- 10:22of like a home village vibe.
- 10:24So all of the tents are going to be on the perimeter of the park and facing the center
- 10:28and then in the center is going to be the music.
- 10:31We're going to have this painting for kids.
- 10:33We have a big raffle.
- 10:34Most of the Hive artists have donated a piece to be raffled off.
- 10:39Lloyd describes some of the other types of vendors that will be at the event.
- 10:42We have jewelers.
- 10:43We have ceramists.
- 10:44We have potters.
- 10:47We have some fabric artists too who are going to be there so you can chop your heart's content
- 10:53there and then maybe wander down into the village for some coffee and some food and
- 10:59some more shopping experience.
- 11:01Lloyd explains the experience they hope to create and notes some of the local businesses
- 11:05involved.
- 11:06It's a village day.
- 11:07That's what we just want everyone to come out and hang out at the village.
- 11:10Have a hang out by the water to bring the kids down.
- 11:13We really want people to come in, check out local artists, but then take a stroll down
- 11:19to the village because we wouldn't be able to run this without the businesses who kind
- 11:25of have sponsored us.
- 11:27So we're hoping people will go down to the commons, books on name, the lodge for coffee.
- 11:34Lloyd also noted they hope to make it an annual event.
- 11:36Bath Art Fest will take place rain or shine.
- 11:39For Amherst Island Radio and the Local Journalism Initiative, I'm Ted.

- 12:04Panache A as well as workshops for illustration and dreamcatcher making.
- 12:09The Lenox Community Theater will also be there hosting creative activities.

- 12:35Ontario Culinary along with the Culinary Tourism Alliance are hosting a Feast On event featuring
- 12:41six chefs from the area happening this fall at McKinnon Brothers Brewing Company.
- 12:45Feast On the Farm, a taste of southeastern Ontario, takes place Saturday, September 28 from 5
- 12:51to 8 p.m.
- 12:52Feast On is a certification program for restaurants and purveyors in Ontario.
- 12:57Ontario Culinary says the program recognizes businesses committed to sourcing Ontario-grown
- 13:01food and drink.
- 13:02The other part of their aim is to make it easier for food lovers to find local food.
- 13:07Each chef will be showcasing their creations using seasonal produce and ingredients from
- 13:10the region.
- 13:11The array of different dishes will also be paired with local craft beverages.
- 13:15Marketing Manager for the Culinary Tourism Alliance, Gabrielle Mueller, explains the
- 13:19goals behind their Feast On events.
- 13:21The goal really is to celebrate the unique taste of place of southeastern Ontario.
- 13:26All the chefs that are featured at the Feast On the Farm event are Feast On certified.
- 13:32So really we're celebrating chefs that are going the extra mile to source seasonal and
- 13:38Ontario-based produce, meats, and other ingredients.
- 13:42And really we just want to take this time to celebrate that.
- 13:46It's harvest season.
- 13:47It's all you can eat.
- 13:49So inviting folks to come on out and eat and taste how much better things taste when they're
- 13:55in season.
- 13:56Mueller notes the range of local beverages that will be on hand as well.
- 13:59I do want to shout out our local drink producers.
- 14:01Of course McKinnon Brothers Brewing, they're hosting us.
- 14:03So we will be serving up their craft beverages as well as craft wine from Carlow Estates Winery
- 14:09in Prince Edward County, Hardway Cider, and Mohawk Soda.
- 14:14So it should be a real all around great time.
