- 0:00What is God putting into your heart to do?
- 0:04When God puts something into your heart, it changes you.
- 0:08We want to do the things that God is telling us to do, but
- 0:11there's obstacles. Sometimes the biggest obstacles
- 0:13we face are the mocking voices of others, and sometimes it's
- 0:16the internal discouragement that we give ourselves.
- 0:19But when God has put something into our heart, we keep on
- 0:23going. When we understand God's word,
- 0:25it changes our hearts. That's what the power of God
- 0:29looks like. How would you feel if you were
- 0:37reading Scripture and all of a sudden you found your name right
- 0:42in the verse and there was a prophecy that you were going to
- 0:44do some remarkable thing? Like maybe it said Jessica of
- 0:48Provo will become mayor of the city, giving free parking to
- 0:51everyone. I mean, it'd be amazing, right?
- 0:53Like, holy cow, I'm in the Scriptures.
- 0:55And according to the historian Josephus, something like that
- 0:59happened to Cyrus, the king of Persia.
- 1:01So before we go into this story, let's just back up and make sure
- 1:04we're familiar with the history of the ancient Near East.
- 1:08As you recall, around the year 600 BC, Babylon was threatening
- 1:12to come destroy Jerusalem. That's why Lehi and his family
- 1:15were warned of the Lord believe. But within a decade or so, the
- 1:19city of Jerusalem had been destroyed, the temple was in
- 1:22ruins, and the Jews were in exile.
- 1:24So there's several decades of Babylonian captivity.
- 1:27But in the year 539 BC, Cyrus the Great of Persia defeated
- 1:31Babylon, and the geographical region of Judea now became
- 1:36controlled by Persia. And so Josephus tells us that
- 1:40Cyrus read the book which Isaiah left behind him of his
- 1:44prophecies. For Isaiah said that God had
- 1:47spoken. My will is that Cyrus, whom I
- 1:50have appointed to be king over many and great nations, send
- 1:53back my people to their own land and build my temple.
- 1:56This was foretold by Isaiah 140 years before the temple was
- 2:02demolished. So here Josephus is referring to
- 2:05Isaiah chapter 44 verse 28 where Cyrus is mentioned by name as
- 2:10one who would help rebuild Jerusalem.
- 2:12Josephus continues, when Cyrus read this, he called for the
- 2:16most eminent Jews that were in Babylon and gave them leave to
- 2:19go back to their own country and to rebuild their city, Jerusalem
- 2:23and the temple of God. Now we don't have any
- 2:26contemporary Persian records confirming this specific story.
- 2:29It would be awesome if we had a journal entry from Cyrus saying,
- 2:32wow, I was reading when I say it today.
- 2:34It was crazy. But what we do know from other
- 2:36historical sources is that Cyrus gave his subjects religious
- 2:41liberty. The Cyrus Cylinder, which today
- 2:44is in the British Museum, says I am Cyrus, king of the world.
- 2:48I returned to many sacred cities on the other side of the Tigris,
- 2:52which have been in ruins for a long time.
- 2:54The images which used to live there in and established for
- 2:58them permanent sanctuaries. I also gathered all their former
- 3:03inhabitants and returned them to their habitations.
- 3:07So the book of Ezra is beginning right where Chronicles ends with
- 3:13Cyrus the Great giving a proclamation allowing the Jews
- 3:16to return and rebuild Jerusalem. Now think about it.
- 3:19Cyrus is not part of the House of Israel.
- 3:23He's not a member of the Lord's true church, but God still had a
- 3:27work for him to do. That reminds me of something
- 3:30President Oakes recently said. He was quoting another apostle
- 3:33saying God is using more than one people for the
- 3:36accomplishment of his great and marvelous work.
- 3:39It is too vast, too arduous for any one people.
- 3:43So just like God used Cyrus to help the Jewish people, God is
- 3:47using people today from a variety of different
- 3:49organizations, different churches to accomplish the work
- 3:52that He's trying to do. The Lord also spoke directly to
- 3:55Cyrus. We read the saith the Lord to
- 3:58his anointed to Cyrus. Remember that in Hebrew, the
- 4:02Anointed 1 means Messiah. This is the only time in
- 4:06Scripture that a foreign ruler receives this title.
- 4:10Cyrus is a lowercase M Messiah. He's setting the Jews free and
- 4:15opening the gates of Jerusalem. He points us to the capital M
- 4:20Messiah, Christ, who sets us free from sin and death and
- 4:24opens the gates to heaven. So today we'll be focusing on
- 4:27approximately 100 years of what happens after this declaration
- 4:32from Cyrus as we counted in the books of Ezra and Nehemiah.
- 4:36Now today we have the books of Ezra and Nehemiah AS2 separate
- 4:39books, but originally they were one telling this story.
- 4:43So let's first do a quick overview of what's happening
- 4:46because I think the plot line of these books can be a little
- 4:48confusing. In about the year 538 BC, you
- 4:51have 50,000 Jewish exiles returning to Jerusalem under the
- 4:56Jewish leaders Aruba Bell. And within a couple of years,
- 4:58they've laid the foundation of the temple.
- 5:01But then opposition comes. And so building the temple is
- 5:05delayed. That's when God raises up
- 5:07prophets named Haggai and Zechariah.
- 5:09In about the year 520 BC, they encourage the Jews to finish the
- 5:14temple. And by 516 BC, the Second temple
- 5:17is completed. And it's dedicated with joy.
- 5:19So it's sometimes called the Second Temple.
- 5:22And that's to distinguish it from Solomon's temple.
- 5:25So psalmist said will be the First Temple.
- 5:27Second temple is the one built by Zerubbabel.
- 5:30And then we have a 60 year gap in the chronology.
- 5:34That's when the book of Esther takes place, which we'll talk
- 5:37about in our next class. So as we're reading the book of
- 5:39Ezra, though, when we flip the page from Ezra 6 to Ezra 7,
- 5:43we've jumped forward in time approximately 60 years.
- 5:46It's Ford 48 BC. The temple is now standing, but
- 5:51the people's hearts are in disrepair.
- 5:53So Ezra the scribe returns from Babylon with a mission to teach
- 5:57the and call the people to live faithfully.
- 6:00And then about 10 years later, we meet Nehemiah, who feels a
- 6:03calling from God to rebuild the walls around Jerusalem.
- 6:07So it's kind of a quick overview of the storyline of the books of
- 6:11Ezra and Nehemiah. Now, scholars love these books.
- 6:15In fact, literally dozens of books have been written about
- 6:18Ezra and Nehemiah. But for all the research that's
- 6:21been done, there's still some basic things we don't know about
- 6:23these books. For example, we're not sure who
- 6:25wrote them. It might have been Ezra, might
- 6:27have been Nehemiah, might have been another person or group of
- 6:29people who were working from their records and from other
- 6:33records. We won't be able to talk about
- 6:35every detail that scholars love to point out out with Ezra and
- 6:38Nehemiah today, but I hope to talk about 3 people and three
- 6:43key events. We'll see Zerubbabel rebuilding
- 6:46the temple, Ezra restoring the law, and Nehemiah repairing the
- 6:50walls. So like I mentioned earlier, the
- 6:52book of Ezra begins where Second Chronicles ends with a statement
- 6:58from Cyrus saying the Lord, the God of heaven has charged me to
- 7:02build him a house at Jerusalem, which is in Judah.
- 7:04Let any of those among you who are of his people, may their God
- 7:08be with them, go up to Jerusalem in Judah and rebuild the House
- 7:13of the Lord. Now, you might remember that
- 7:15Chronicles ends in Hebrew in a little bit of a strange way with
- 7:19just the words and go up. And it doesn't tell us what
- 7:22we're going up to do. But here Ezra adds and makes it
- 7:26clear that we're going up to Jerusalem to rebuild the temple.
- 7:29So Zerubabel leads 50,000 of the Jewish people back for this
- 7:34important effort. We read in the book of Haggai
- 7:36that Zerubabel is the governor of Judah.
- 7:40And while I don't want to get too bogged down in genealogy, I
- 7:43know that's not people's favorite parts of the
- 7:44scriptures. Zerubabel's genealogy is pretty
- 7:47interesting. It's listed in Matthew chapter
- 7:50one, the first chapter of the New Testament.
- 7:53If you start going back, you see that Zerubbabel's ancestors
- 7:56include Josiah, Jehoshaphat, Hezekiah, Solomon, David.
- 8:01These are people that we're familiar with.
- 8:04Zerubbabel is an inheritor of the throne of David.
- 8:07And then if we start moving towards us in time, we see that
- 8:10one of Zerubbabel's descendants is Jesus Christ.
- 8:14So once Zerubbabel gets back into Jerusalem, the first
- 8:18priority is worship. It's going to take some time to
- 8:21rebuild the temple. So first they start with an
- 8:24altar. We read Zerubbabel set out to
- 8:26build the altar of the God of Israel to offer burnt offerings
- 8:30on it as prescribed in the Law of Moses.
- 8:33It's an interesting pattern. Adam and Eve, when they left the
- 8:37Garden of Eden, they built an altar so that they could
- 8:40worship. Lehigh, right after leaving
- 8:41Jerusalem, built an altar. It's an interesting pattern.
- 8:44God's people, whenever they're starting over, begin with
- 8:47sacrifice and with worship. And that's exactly what Zerubbel
- 8:51did. So he starts by building the
- 8:52altar. But he didn't stop there.
- 8:54As we keep reading, in the second year after their arrival
- 8:57in Jerusalem, Zerubbabel began work on the House of the Lord,
- 9:02and within a short time they completed the foundation.
- 9:05And so when they had a special celebration for the foundation
- 9:08of the temple, there was a great joy but also another reaction.
- 9:12Take a look at Ezra chapter 3, verse 11.
- 9:15The people responded with a great shout when they praised
- 9:18the Lord because the foundation of the House of the Lord had
- 9:21been laid. But many of the priests and
- 9:22Levites and heads of family, old people who had seen the 1st
- 9:27house on its foundations wept with a loud voice when they saw
- 9:31this house. For those who had never seen a
- 9:33temple before, it was incredible.
- 9:35But for the older people who remembered what Solomon's temple
- 9:38had looked like, it was actually kind of disappointing.
- 9:41And I love Ezra chapter 3. I hope you mark it in your
- 9:44scriptures because it captures attention that we all feel in
- 9:47our lives sometimes. Maybe when God is beginning
- 9:50something new, there's hope and joy for what is to come.
- 9:53But we also sometimes might grieve at what's been lost.
- 9:57And Ezra chapter 3 reminds us that both of those feelings can
- 10:01coexist at the same time. Now, whenever you're doing the
- 10:05work of the Lord, you can always expect opposition, and that's
- 10:08how it was for Zerubbabel. We read when the adversaries of
- 10:12Judah heard that the returned exiles were building a temple to
- 10:15the Lord, they approached Zerubabel and said, let us build
- 10:19with you, for we worship your God as you do, and we have been
- 10:23sacrificing to Him ever since the king of Assyria brought us
- 10:27here. Now we're going to do a quick
- 10:29pause and review our history. If we went back to Second Kings
- 10:33chapter 17, this is approximately the year 720 BC,
- 10:38so roughly 200 years before this.
- 10:41That's when Assyria scatters the 10 tribes.
- 10:43And the way that Assyria would do things is they would conquer
- 10:46a territory, take the people from that territory, move them
- 10:49to all the different spots, and then take people from all the
- 10:51different spots and move them to the territory that had been
- 10:54conquered. So that's what's happened here.
- 10:58The people that are now coming to Zerubbabel, their ancestors
- 11:01had been resettled into the land of Samaria, which was the
- 11:05capital of the northern Kingdom of Israel.
- 11:08So the question is, in the intervening 2 years, have they
- 11:10been totally faithful to the God of Israel?
- 11:13But the Israelites had already fallen into idolatry.
- 11:16Now they have people from other nations who have come in.
- 11:18Have they started to fall further away from the worship of
- 11:21the true God? We don't know for sure what
- 11:23their situation is. But what we do know is that
- 11:26Zerubbabel refused their offer. He said, you shall have no part
- 11:30with us in building a house to our God.
- 11:33So let's pause there for a second.
- 11:34Is it possible that Zerubbabel is being too protective?
- 11:39It's possible, right? Maybe he could have said yes,
- 11:41come and see, come and help. We want to introduce you to the
- 11:43missionaries. And this could have been a great
- 11:45opportunity to bring lots more people to the worship of God.
- 11:48That's possible. But is it also possible that
- 11:51there was a genuine danger that maybe if they started to mix
- 11:54together, it would weaken the people's devotion to the true
- 11:58God? It's also possible.
- 12:01But either way, there's a rift that happens, and it continues
- 12:06throughout history here. When it comes to the building of
- 12:08the temple, we read the people of the land discouraged the
- 12:12people of Judah and made them afraid to build.
- 12:16Now let's pause this story and move forward in time 500 years.
- 12:21The descendants of the people who lived in Samaria at the time
- 12:25we're talking about, they are now called Samaritans.
- 12:29So when Jesus meets a Samaritan woman at the well, this is part
- 12:34of the history in that conversation.
- 12:36That's why the Samaritan woman is shocked that Jesus isn't even
- 12:39talking to her. She says, how is it that you, a
- 12:41Jew, ask a drink of me, a woman of Samaria?
- 12:46Jesus answers. If you knew the gift of God and
- 12:49who it is that is saying to you give me a drink, you would have
- 12:52asked him and he would have given you living water.
- 12:57The woman replied, You have no bucket and the well is deep,
- 12:59where do you get that living water?
- 13:01Are you greater than our ancestor Jacob who gave us the
- 13:04well? Jesus responded, Everyone who
- 13:07drinks of this water will be thirsty again, but those who
- 13:10drink of the water that I will give them will never be thirsty.
- 13:15The conversation continues and the woman ends by testifying
- 13:18that she knows Jesus is the Messiah.
- 13:21So the book of Ezra shows us how the rift begins.
- 13:25Jesus, it shows us how it ends. But if we go back to
- 13:28Zerubbabel's time and the opposition to building the
- 13:31temple, we read the people of the land bribed officials to
- 13:35frustrate Zerubbabel's plan to build a temple.
- 13:38They also wrote a letter to the king of Persia.
- 13:41The letter said the Jews who came up from you to us have gone
- 13:45to Jerusalem. They are rebuilding that
- 13:46rebellious and wicked city. Now may it be known to the king
- 13:50that if this city is rebuilt and the walls finished, they will
- 13:53not pay tribute, custom or toll and the royal revenue will be
- 13:58reduced. So this is obviously propaganda.
- 14:01It's not true, but it works. The king of Persia writes a
- 14:04letter saying, well, let's stop the temple building.
- 14:06We got to investigate this a little more.
- 14:08And it's interesting how history repeats itself.
- 14:13Several years ago, the church bought a beautiful piece of
- 14:16property near Preston, England, with the goal of building a
- 14:19temple near Preston. But there was opposition to the
- 14:23building of the temple. The local City Council really
- 14:25wanted that parcel of land to be for employers, for business.
- 14:29And so when the church applied for a rezoning to use it for
- 14:32religious purposes, they said absolutely not.
- 14:34We want jobs, not a temple. We will never rezone this land.
- 14:38Well, there was a local member of the church.
- 14:40His name was Peter. Peter was also the architect for
- 14:43the Preston Temple. So President Hinckley gave Peter
- 14:46the assignment. You got to work on this.
- 14:48And Peter sees all of the opposition and he writes
- 14:51President Hinckley back. He's like a President Hinckley,
- 14:53why don't you come help? President is like, Nope, sorry.
- 14:56This is all you, Peter. So there's going to be a meeting
- 14:59for local citizens to talk about the temple, and Peter supposed
- 15:03to go and be the representative for the church.
- 15:06The entire stake has a fast for him.
- 15:09How would you feel if you knew your stake was fasting for you?
- 15:12You're walking in to a group of people that really have no
- 15:15interest in what you're about to say.
- 15:18So Peter began telling a little bit of background about temples.
- 15:22And then all of a sudden, the Holy Ghost prompted him to say
- 15:25something that he was not planning to say.
- 15:27He just asked, has anybody here ever visited one of our temples?
- 15:31One hand went up a man in the back of the room, Peter, I had
- 15:35no idea what the man would say, but he Guinea felt impressed to
- 15:37call on the man. So then the man said, I've been
- 15:40to one of your temples. It was beautiful, first class.
- 15:42The landscaping was superb and the people were wonderful.
- 15:46Then turning to his neighbors, he said firmly, I support this
- 15:49proposal. The temple will be the best
- 15:52neighbor you'll ever have, Peter later recounted.
- 15:56It was as if someone had raised a baton.
- 15:58One by one, people nodded in agreement.
- 16:01Voices that had opposed the project began saying, yes, we
- 16:04will support you. The chairman, who is so
- 16:06energetically led the opposition, was the last to
- 16:08speak. He looked at me and said, Peter,
- 16:10not only will we support you, but what more can we do to help
- 16:14you think about that? The same community that had once
- 16:18said no, never now said, how can we help?
- 16:22That's what the power of God looks like now in Zerubbabel's
- 16:26day. In our day, there's opposition
- 16:29when we're doing the work of the Lord.
- 16:31Sometimes it's in something big like building a temple, and
- 16:35sometimes it takes place in our own lives with whatever things
- 16:38we are trying to build. So I just want you to take a
- 16:41moment and consider this question.
- 16:42What kinds of opposition do people face today when they're
- 16:46trying to live their faith? I was the only member of the
- 16:50church in my classroom for many years when I went to school.
- 16:53And many times I was invited to these parties.
- 16:57I felt very uncomfortable. And they just hand me this cup
- 17:00that looked like orange juice. And they're like, here you go,
- 17:03you should drink this. And I said, no, I'm not going to
- 17:06drink this. And I got really mad.
- 17:08And my friends were like, don't get mad.
- 17:10I'm just like, no, like, you know, I don't drink alcohol.
- 17:14You know that I don't do this. I immediately like called my dad
- 17:19and I said like, I need to leave.
- 17:21And their policy with my family is like, whatever happens, if
- 17:24you don't feel comfortable, call me.
- 17:26I'll pick you up no problem, no questions asked.
- 17:29Thank you. That's that's real, real
- 17:30opposition. The rest of the world or the
- 17:34community you're in maybe doesn't observe the Sabbath or
- 17:36business is open and it can just feel, I think when you're in
- 17:39that space, like no one's pressuring you to do it, but it
- 17:44can feel like everybody's doing it, like it's fine.
- 17:46A. Subtle cultural pressure.
- 17:48Yeah. Thank you.
- 17:49So we shouldn't be surprised when opposition comes into our
- 17:53lives. But when things get hard,
- 17:55remember, we worship a God who says my grace is all you need.
- 18:00My power works best in weakness. And I testify that that's true.
- 18:05When we're weak, God will strengthen us.
- 18:08And that was the case for Zerubabel.
- 18:10Eventually the Persians figured out this was just propaganda.
- 18:13They wrote back and said keep going on the rebuilding project.
- 18:16It's actually a little bit of a longer story.
- 18:18The books Haggai and Zechariah that we'll talk about in a
- 18:21future class go into a few more details about the building of
- 18:25the temple. But to make a Long story short,
- 18:26eventually the temple is built and when it is, we read the
- 18:31people of Israel celebrated the dedication of this House of God
- 18:35with rejoicing. So Ezra chapter 6 ends with the
- 18:38temple dedication in about the year 516 BC.
- 18:42And like I mentioned earlier, when we flip the page to Chapter
- 18:457, we've skipped 60 years of history, and we get from the
- 18:49story of Zerubbabel rebuilding the temple to the story of Ezra
- 18:54restoring the law. So by the time Ezra comes back
- 18:57on the scene, the Exiles have been there for some time.
- 18:59Things are good as far as the temple goes, but maybe not quite
- 19:02as good as far as the people's spiritual devotion.
- 19:05So God called Ezra to restore this devotion to God's Word.
- 19:09And Ezra was just the right person for the job we read.
- 19:12Ezra had set his heart to study the law of the Lord and to do
- 19:18it, and to teach the statutes and ordinances in Israel.
- 19:22His whole heart is bound up in the Scriptures.
- 19:25He wants to read them, to study them, to live them, to teach
- 19:29them, and he was a powerful teacher.
- 19:31The books of Ezra and Nehemiah are connected, and so one of the
- 19:34best places that we can see Ezra in action is actually in
- 19:38Nehemiah chapter 8. Here we read all the people
- 19:42gathered together. They told Ezra the scribe to
- 19:44bring the Book of the Law of Moses, which the Lord had given
- 19:48to Israel. Ezra the priest brought the Law
- 19:50before the assembly, both men and women and all who could hear
- 19:54with understanding. He read from it facing the
- 19:58square from early morning until midday.
- 20:02So if you thought 3 hour church was too long, I don't know if
- 20:05you would have liked Ezra's approach.
- 20:08But the people loved it, and it says something to me about
- 20:10Ezra's skills and abilities, the people's desire to hear the Word
- 20:15and the power of God's Word. Now, Ezra wasn't the only person
- 20:20teaching. In fact, we read additional
- 20:22teachers also helped the people understand the law.
- 20:27They read from the book, from the law of God with
- 20:30interpretation. They gave the sense so that the
- 20:34people understood the reading. That's what good gospel people,
- 20:38teachers do. They give the sense they help
- 20:40people really understand the word because when we understand
- 20:45God's Word, it changes our hearts.
- 20:47And that's what happened to this people.
- 20:49We read, all the people wept when they heard the words of the
- 20:54law. Now, does this remind you of any
- 20:56speeches in the Book of Mormon where people hear powerful
- 21:00message from the word of God and then start crying?
- 21:04If you're not sure yet, I'll give you another hint.
- 21:06We read Ezra the Scribe stood on a wooden platform that had been
- 21:10made for the purpose of speaking to the people.
- 21:13That reminds us of King Benjamin, who had a platform
- 21:16constructed so that he could speak to his people.
- 21:19And there are more connections. We read that in Ezra's case,
- 21:22after hearing the law, the people said because of all this,
- 21:26we make a firm agreement in writing that reminds us of King
- 21:31Benjamin's people who made a covenant to follow God and keep
- 21:34his commandments. And I know what some of you are
- 21:36thinking to yourself. Wow, this is so interesting.
- 21:38I wish I could learn more about the connections between Ezra and
- 21:41King Benjamin, which granted, I've linked to a great article
- 21:44on this topic on our course website.
- 21:46But for now, I just want us to think about Ezra.
- 21:49Ezra had said his it's hard to study the law of the Lord and to
- 21:53do it and to teach the statutes and ordinances in Israel.
- 21:59It sounds kind of commonplace to say, but the scriptures really
- 22:03do have the answers to the problems that we face.
- 22:06Ezra's people were in some sticky situations and the
- 22:09scriptures gave them guidance. It's the same for us today.
- 22:13We all know that the right answer usually is read your
- 22:16scriptures. But can we be honest with each
- 22:18other for a moment? Let's talk what's going well
- 22:22with your Scripture study? How could it be improved?
- 22:24Have you taken the time recently to really think about your
- 22:27studies? And if you're on the track of
- 22:30Ezra, to deeply love to set your heart on God's Word.
- 22:35In 2010 through 12, my husband and I served in Copenhagen,
- 22:40Denmark, and we had Elder Bednar come to our mission and he
- 22:45filled it. All kinds of questions.
- 22:47And then he told us what he has done.
- 22:50He said, I have a virtual library of Book of Mormons and
- 22:55every time I want to look for something specific, I'll buy one
- 22:59of the inexpensive little Book of Mormons.
- 23:02And I will right in the front what I would like to learn this,
- 23:06this time I read the Book of Mormon and then that Book of
- 23:10Mormon becomes powerful in that particular subject.
- 23:13And I have tried that and I, I have probably been through 8 or
- 23:1710 Book of Mormons myself. And I would have to say that it
- 23:22opens my eyes differently to the Book of Mormon when I read it.
- 23:26I love that idea, thank you. Several years ago, I was really
- 23:31looking for some answers and I knew that by going to my
- 23:35scriptures I would find them. And so I really dedicated myself
- 23:39to a serious study of reading the scriptures.
- 23:41As I read, I've started to receive a lot of answers and
- 23:45direction. It didn't come all at once.
- 23:47It kind of just came little by little.
- 23:49And I look at where I'm at today and I'm in a place that feels
- 23:52very stuck and I'm, I feel like I'm there's something coming or
- 23:56I'm seeking for something but I'm not sure exactly what it is.
- 24:02And I probably should remind myself to go back and do what I
- 24:05was doing before. I have been reading, I am
- 24:08studying, but maybe not quite with the intent or with the
- 24:12questions that I had before that was helping me to find purpose
- 24:16and direction. Yeah, for me, I think one of the
- 24:19biggest keys for successful scripture studies to really have
- 24:23a purpose when you're studying. Sometimes if you're a full time
- 24:26missionary, there's people that you're teaching and so you have
- 24:29this big purpose in your scriptures that I'm going to go
- 24:31to the scriptures to find answers for them.
- 24:33But then I come home from my mission and it's like, oh, OK,
- 24:35well, why am I reading the scriptures?
- 24:37So whether it's, you know, picking a fresh copy of the book
- 24:40of More Money and having a specific thing that I'm looking
- 24:42for or just in my daily scripture study in my own life,
- 24:45going with the question, it can be really powerful.
- 24:48And if you're interested, on the course website, I've linked to a
- 24:50list of different study techniques.
- 24:52Sometimes I found that I can just get in a rut.
- 24:54It's not that what I'm doing is bad, but it just gets a little
- 24:57repetitive. And so to mix it up to have a
- 24:59new thing, a new topic, or a new approach to study can be really
- 25:03useful. So there's great power that
- 25:05comes when we, like Ezra, set our hearts on the word of the
- 25:09Lord. Now let's turn from Ezra
- 25:11restoring the law to Nehemiah repairing the walls.
- 25:14So we were just in Nehemiah chapter 8.
- 25:16Let's flip back to Nehemiah chapter 1, where we're first
- 25:19introduced to Nehemiah. It's about the year 450 BC
- 25:23Persia is still ruling the world, and its king is
- 25:26Artaxerxes. So Nehemiah is a cup bearer in
- 25:31Artaxerxes court. And when you hear about being a
- 25:34cupbearer, that probably doesn't sound that great.
- 25:35It's like the guy who carries around a cup.
- 25:37But in context, this was a really important position.
- 25:41Nehemiah is sort of like the royal food tester.
- 25:44He's part of the inner circle. He's not just like the King's
- 25:47waiter or something like that. So one day some visitors from
- 25:50Jerusalem come and Nehemiah talks to them and says, hey, how
- 25:53are things going? But the news isn't good.
- 25:56They say the survivors there in the province who escaped
- 25:59captivity are in great trouble and shame.
- 26:02The wall of Jerusalem is broken down and it's gates have been
- 26:06destroyed by fire. Nehemiah said.
- 26:08When I heard these words, I sat down and wept and mourned for
- 26:12days, fasting and praying before the God of heaven.
- 26:15His grief was so deep that it carried into his work when he
- 26:19stood before the king. The king noticed his sorrow and
- 26:22asked, Why is your face sad since you were not sick?
- 26:24This can only be the sadness of the heart.
- 26:27Nehemiah said, Why should my face not be sad when the city,
- 26:30the place of my ancestors graves, lies in waste and its
- 26:34gates have been destroyed by fire?
- 26:36The king said, What do you request?
- 26:38And I love Nehemiah's next words.
- 26:40He said, So I prayed to the God of heaven.
- 26:44Can you picture the scene? Nehemiah's having a conversation
- 26:46with the king, but at the same time he's having a conversation
- 26:49with the true king. Have you ever been in a crucial
- 26:52conversation and you're trying to stay focused on the
- 26:55conversation but also be praying?
- 26:56Lord, you got to help me with this.
- 26:58That's what Nehemiah is doing. He said, if it pleases the king,
- 27:02send me to Judah, to the city of my ancestors graves, so that I
- 27:06may rebuild it. And the king said yes, he gave
- 27:10Nehemiah some time off and some resources.
- 27:12And so Nehemiah begins one of the great restoration projects
- 27:16of the entire Bible. Just like with Zerubbabel's
- 27:19temple, we can learn lessons from Nehemiah building the wall
- 27:23that apply to us in whatever good things we're trying to
- 27:26build in our lives. And I will highlight three
- 27:28specific lessons from Nehemiah. First, listen for what God puts
- 27:33into your heart. So when Nehemiah arrived, one of
- 27:36the first things he did was survey the walls.
- 27:38And scholars today aren't 100% certain what the walls of the
- 27:42ancient city of Jerusalem would have looked like in terms of
- 27:44their size or dimensions, but they were probably about 1 to 1
- 27:481/2 miles in length, 20 to 30 feet in height and several feet
- 27:53in width. So to rebuild the walls, this is
- 27:55no small task. But to Nehemiah, this is more
- 27:59than just a community building project.
- 28:03Nehemiah said. I was doing what God had put
- 28:07into my heart to do for Jerusalem.
- 28:11What is God putting into your heart to do?
- 28:15It reminds me of something that we talked about back with the
- 28:18creation. We talked about the process of
- 28:21spiritual creation. We looked at this quote from
- 28:24Elder Richard G Scott. He said you need a retreat of
- 28:28peace and quiet where periodically you can ponder and
- 28:32let the Lord establish the direction in your life.
- 28:36Can you see how that phrase let the Lord establish the direction
- 28:40in your life? That's kind of like letting God
- 28:41put something into your heart. This track continues.
- 28:44Sometime soon you may benefit from taking this personal
- 28:49inventory. What are my highest priorities
- 28:52of life? How do I use my discretionary
- 28:54time? Is some of it consistently used
- 28:57for my highest priorities? Is there anything I know I
- 29:01should not be doing? If so, I will stop it now.
- 29:05I think if this had just been a random idea Nehemiah had, if it
- 29:09was just like, well it sounds like a great eagle project to
- 29:11rebuild the wall, it could have been a good thing.
- 29:13But when the opposition heats up, he might have backed away.
- 29:18In my own life, I found that if I just set some New Year's
- 29:20resolutions that seemed like good ideas, it's easy for them
- 29:23to fall by the wayside. But if it's something God has
- 29:27put into my heart, that makes all the difference.
- 29:29I remember being 27 years old. God put it into my heart to
- 29:33learn Chinese. And at first I was like, why
- 29:35would I want to learn Chinese? I already speak English, I speak
- 29:37Spanish, I'm doing great, but because God really put that into
- 29:40my heart, I put it into action. And even though it was hard, I
- 29:44learned Chinese and that led to so many wonderful doors opening
- 29:47up for my family and for me. When God puts something into
- 29:50your heart, it changes you. Now part of acting on what God
- 29:55is putting into your heart though will be getting rid of
- 29:58the rubbish. We read Nehemiah and the people
- 30:01how to mind to work. I love that phrase and hopefully
- 30:04that's us, right? We have a mind to work.
- 30:06We want to do the things that God is telling us to do, but
- 30:09there's obstacles. The people said there is much
- 30:11rubbish so that we are not able to build the wall.
- 30:16Before they could continue with the work, they had to get rid of
- 30:19the rubbish. In their world there was all
- 30:21this debris from when the walls have been destroyed that they
- 30:23had to clear out before they could rebuild.
- 30:26Think about what this means in our life.
- 30:27What is the rubbish that we have?
- 30:30Could be possessions, things that are good, but they're just
- 30:33consuming our time and storing them and repairing them.
- 30:36It's just too much. Or they could be activities,
- 30:40digital or otherwise. A recent survey of 752 Christian
- 30:44leaders found that 75% of them said that the busyness of their
- 30:48lives frequently interferes with the development of their
- 30:52relationship with God. Could the same thing be
- 30:55happening for us? Could the rubbish we face be
- 31:00temptations to be distracted by stuff that really is so trivial?
- 31:05Or even temptations to do things that are certainly wrong?
- 31:07I love what Craig Greschel said. Why would I resist a temptation
- 31:11in the future if I have the power to eliminate it today?
- 31:16Just get rid of the rubbish. It makes it so much easier to
- 31:20resist temptation now. Remember that Nehemiah wasn't
- 31:22just getting rid of the rubbish as part of the spring cleaning
- 31:25project or something like that. He was getting rid of the
- 31:28rubbish so that he could do what God put into his heart.
- 31:32It's not just about doing less, it's doing less so that we can
- 31:36do what God is calling us to do. President Ukdorf taught, like
- 31:41Nehemiah, we have a great work to do.
- 31:43It is my fervent prayer that in spite of distractions, wherever
- 31:47they may come from, we will not lose focus on what matters most.
- 31:52So take a moment to reflect in your life, What's the rubbish?
- 31:56How could you, like Nehemiah, get rid of the rubbish?
- 32:01Now the third lesson I want to highlight from Nehemiah is to
- 32:03beware of the fourth time. In addition to the rubbish, the
- 32:07Jews faced direct opposition to their rebuilding of the wall,
- 32:11just like they did with the rebuilding of the Temple.
- 32:13We read now when Sam Blatt, you can probably just tell from his
- 32:16name, Sam Blatt might not be the the greatest character.
- 32:19When Sam Blatt had heard we were building the wall, he was angry
- 32:23and greatly enraged, and he mocked the Jews.
- 32:25He said in the presence of his associates and of the army of
- 32:28Samaria. What are these feeble Jews
- 32:30doing? Will they restore it by
- 32:32themselves? Will they offer sacrifice?
- 32:35His friend Tobiah the Ammonite was beside him, and he said
- 32:38that's stone. While they're building, any fox
- 32:40going up on it could break it down.
- 32:43Can you hear the mockery, the disdain, and their voice for
- 32:46what Nehemiah is trying to accomplish?
- 32:49Sometimes the biggest obstacles we face are the mocking voices
- 32:52of others, and sometimes it's the internal discouragement that
- 32:55we give ourselves. But when God has put something
- 32:59into our heart, we keep on going.
- 33:01And that's what Nehemiah did. We read Sandblatt and Geshem
- 33:05sent to me saying, come, let us meet together in one of the
- 33:08villages in the plain of Oh no. Now if someone asks you to meet
- 33:13them in a place called Oh no, I'm recommending, don't go.
- 33:18It's bad news. And Nehemiah tells us that it
- 33:20was. He said, But they intended to do
- 33:22me harm, Nehemiah said. So I sent messengers to them,
- 33:25saying, I am doing a great work, I cannot come down.
- 33:28Why should the work stop while I leave it and come down to you?
- 33:32Can you see how because it was deep in Nehemiah's heart, he
- 33:36can't be distracted from other things?
- 33:38Now notice the next verse. They sent unto me four times in
- 33:43this way, and I answered them in the same manner.
- 33:47So there's a pattern of resisting temptation not once,
- 33:50not twice, but even to the fourth time.
- 33:54And there's an interesting cross reference here to a Book of
- 33:57Mormon story that you might remember.
- 33:59There was a guy named Lehontai, and he had split off with many
- 34:02other Lamanites because they didn't want to fight the
- 34:05Nephites. But in Malachiah, who was in
- 34:07charge of another group of Lamanites, came to Lehontai to
- 34:10try to persuade him to fight. So Lehontai is up in a mountain,
- 34:14and Malachi asks him once, twice, three times.
- 34:17Come down, come down, come down. Leonte always says no, but then
- 34:21on the fourth time, a Malachi comes up almost to where
- 34:26Lehontai is and says just come down a little.
- 34:28This time Lehontai does come down, and shortly thereafter
- 34:32he's assassinated. The difference between Nehemiah
- 34:37and Lehontai is what they did on the fourth time.
- 34:40All of us can resist temptation once, twice, maybe three times.
- 34:44But metaphorically speaking, what will you and I do on the
- 34:484th time? Did you know that when it comes
- 34:50to the fourth time, Jesus Christ himself sets the example four
- 34:56times on the cross, Four different groups of people
- 34:59mocked him and told him to come down.
- 35:03The people walking by mocked Come down from the cross.
- 35:06The soldiers jeered. If you are the King of the Jews,
- 35:09save yourself. The thief beside him said,
- 35:13Aren't you the Messiah? Save yourself and us, the chief
- 35:17priests and elders sneered. Let him come down and we will
- 35:21believe. Four times the mocking came, but
- 35:25Jesus stayed, not on a wall, but on the cross, and he stayed to
- 35:31draw us to him. He stayed so that we would have
- 35:34the power, His power to resist the mocking and temptation.
- 35:40Even on the fourth time. Today we've seen Zerubbabel,
- 35:45Ezra, and Nehemiah. They all felt opposition in the
- 35:49work they were doing, but they pressed forward in God's
- 35:52strength. Nehemiah's wall was completed in
- 35:55just 52 days, and you can actually still see remnants of
- 35:58Nehemiah's wall in Jerusalem today.
- 36:01Yes, we will feel opposition like Saruba, Bell, Ezra, and
- 36:05Nehemiah did, but when we feel the pressure to come down, we
- 36:09can echo Nehemiah's prayer. God strengthen my hands, and the
- 36:15greater Nehemiah who never came down will help us finish the
- 36:21work that He has put into our hearts.
