- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here and it's Wednesday, it's the
- 0:15middle of the week and we are listening to this beautiful
- 0:19music, my favourite of all the opening tracks that we use on
- 0:24this podcast. And as I've been thinking about
- 0:27music, I've realised that today is the day May the 13th, 259
- 0:34years ago, would you believe that Mozart's very first opera
- 0:40was premiered? An opera that he wrote when he
- 0:44was 11 years old? Do you know any 11 year olds?
- 0:49Can you imagine them penning an opera that would still be
- 0:52performed more than 250 years later?
- 0:55Kind of blows your mind, doesn't it?
- 0:57And as beautiful as this little piece of music is, Sage the
- 1:01Hunter, I'm not sure it's going to be topping the charts 2 1/2
- 1:07centuries down the track. But anyway, that is the genius
- 1:11of our mate Wolfgang Mozart. Amazing.
- 1:14And today we will continue this epilogue of the story of Joshua.
- 1:20Kind of the main work is now done and now people are heading
- 1:23home. And it's kind of the final
- 1:25comments for these last three chapters.
- 1:27And this is the chapter where I don't know if you remember all
- 1:29the way back at the start, they conquered the land to the east
- 1:32of the Jordan River. And then they said, come on
- 1:35armies, you've already got your land on that side, but come and
- 1:38help us conquer the land on the other side of the Jordan and
- 1:40then you can go home. And today is the day that they
- 1:42get to go home. The work is and the borders are
- 1:46secure, the land is theirs, and everyone gets to go home and
- 1:50rest and begin their new life of peace and prosperity.
- 1:54Oh, how wonderful is that. Let's read it together friends,
- 1:57as we read Joshua chapter 22. Then Joshua called together the
- 2:11tribes of Reuben, Gad and the half tribe of Manasseh.
- 2:15He told them, You have done as Moses the servant of the Lord
- 2:19commanded you, and you have obeyed every order I gave you.
- 2:24During all this time you have not deserted the other tribes.
- 2:28You have been careful to obey the commands of the Lord your
- 2:31God right up to the present day. And now the Lord your God has
- 2:35given the other tribes rest as He promised them.
- 2:39So go back home to the land that Moses the servant of the Lord,
- 2:44gave you as your possession on the east side of the Jordan
- 2:47River. But be very careful to obey all
- 2:50the commands and the instructions that Moses gave to
- 2:53you. Love the Lord your God, walk in
- 2:56His ways, obey His commands, hold firmly to Him, and serve
- 3:02him with all your heart and all your soul.
- 3:07So Joshua blessed them and sent them away, and they went home.
- 3:13Moses had given the land of Bashan east of the Jordan River
- 3:16to the half tribe of Manasseh. The other half of the tribe was
- 3:20given land West of the Jordan. As Joshua sent them away and
- 3:24blessed them, he said to them, Go back to your homes with the
- 3:28great wealth you have taken from your enemies.
- 3:31The vast herds of livestock, the silver, gold, bronze and iron,
- 3:36and the large supply of clothing.
- 3:38Share the plunder with your relatives.
- 3:41So the men of Reuben, Gad and the half tribe of Manasseh left
- 3:45the rest of Israel at Shiloh in the land of Canaan.
- 3:49They started the journey back to their own land of Gilead, the
- 3:53territory that belonged to them according to the Lord's command
- 3:56through Moses. But while they were still in
- 3:59Canaan, and when they came to a place called Gelaloth near the
- 4:03Jordan River, the men of Reuben, Gad and the half tribe of
- 4:06Manasseh stopped to build a large and imposing altar.
- 4:11The rest of Israel heard that the people of Reuben, Gad and
- 4:14the half tribe of Manasseh had built an altar at Gelaloth, at
- 4:18the edge of the land of Canaan on the West side of the Jordan
- 4:21River. So the whole community of Israel
- 4:24gathered at Shiloh and prepared to go to war against them.
- 4:28First, however, they sent a delegation led by Phineas, son
- 4:33of Eleazar the priest, to talk with the tribes of Reuben, Gad
- 4:37and the half tribe of Manasseh. In this delegation were 10
- 4:40leaders of Israel, one from each of the 10 tribes and each the
- 4:45head of his family within the clans of Israel.
- 4:48When they arrived in the land of Gilead, they said to the tribes
- 4:51of Reuben, Gad and the half tribe of Manasseh.
- 4:55The whole community of the Lord demands to know why you are
- 4:58betraying the God of Israel. How could you turn away from the
- 5:02Lord and build an altar for yourselves in rebellion against
- 5:05Him? Was our sin at Peor not enough?
- 5:09To this day we are not fully cleansed of it, even after the
- 5:13plague that struck the entire community of the Lord.
- 5:16And yet today you are turning away from following the Lord.
- 5:20If you rebel against the Lord today, He will be angry with all
- 5:24of us tomorrow. If you need the altar because
- 5:27the land you possess is defiled, then join us in the Lord's land
- 5:32where the Tabernacle of the Lord is situated, and share our land
- 5:36with us. Do not rebel against the Lord or
- 5:39against us by building an altar other than the one true altar of
- 5:43the Lord our God. Didn't divine anger fall on the
- 5:47entire community of Israel when Akan, a member of the clan of
- 5:51Zerah, sinned by stealing the things set apart for the Lord?
- 5:55He was not the only one who died because of his sin.
- 5:59Then the people of Reuben, Gad and the half tribe of Manasseh
- 6:03answered the heads of the clans of Israel.
- 6:06The Lord, the mighty One is God, The Lord, the mighty One is God.
- 6:11He knows the truth, and may Israel know it too.
- 6:16We have not built the altar in treacherous rebellion against
- 6:19the Lord. If we have done so, do not spare
- 6:22our lives this day. If we have built an altar for
- 6:26ourselves to turn away from the Lord, or to offer burnt
- 6:29offerings or grain offerings or peace offerings, may the Lord
- 6:32Himself punish us. The truth is we have built this
- 6:36altar because we fear that in the future your descendants will
- 6:40say to ours, what right do you have to worship the Lord, the
- 6:44God of Israel? The Lord has placed the Jordan
- 6:47River as a barrier between our people and your people of Reuben
- 6:50and Gad. You have no claim to the Lord,
- 6:54so your descendants may prevent our descendants from worshipping
- 6:57the Lord. So we decided to build the
- 7:00altar, not the burnt offerings or sacrifices, but as a
- 7:03memorial. It will remind our descendants
- 7:06and your descendants that we too have the right to worship the
- 7:10Lord at His sanctuary with our burnt offerings, sacrifices and
- 7:15peace offerings. Then your descendants will not
- 7:17be able to say to ours, you have no claim to the Lord.
- 7:22If they say this, our descendants can reply.
- 7:26Look at this copy of the Lord's altar that our ancestors made.
- 7:29It is not for burnt offerings or sacrifices.
- 7:32It is a reminder of the relationship both of us have
- 7:36with the Lord. Far be it from us to rebel
- 7:39against the Lord or turn away from Him by building our own
- 7:42altar for burnt offerings, grain offerings or sacrifices.
- 7:46Only the altar of the Lord our God that stands in front of the
- 7:50Tabernacle may be used for that purpose.
- 7:53When Phineas the priest, and the leaders of the community, the
- 7:57heads of the clans of Israel, heard this from the tribes of
- 8:00Reuben, Gad and the half tribe of Manasseh, they were
- 8:04satisfied. Phineas son of Eleazar the
- 8:07priest, replied to them. Today we know the Lord is among
- 8:12us, because you have not committed this treachery against
- 8:15the Lord as we thought. Instead you have rescued Israel
- 8:19from being destroyed by the hand of the Lord.
- 8:23Then Phineas son of Eleazar the priest, and the other leaders
- 8:28left the tribes of Reuben and Gad in Gilead and returned to
- 8:32the land of Canaan to tell the Israelites what had happened.
- 8:36And all the Israelites were satisfied and praised God, and
- 8:40spoke no more of war against Reuben and Gad.
- 8:44The people of Reuben and Gad named the altar witness, for
- 8:49they said it is a witness between us and them that the
- 8:53Lord is our God too, our Lord.
- 9:07What we see so beautifully in this reading today is that our
- 9:12faith is not just our faith, but it is the faith of generations
- 9:17to come. And we see these tribes
- 9:20thinking, how do we make sure that we can continue to worship
- 9:24our children and their children and their children's children's
- 9:27children when geopolitics may have changed, They wanted to
- 9:32make sure that they were still able to follow their faith in
- 9:36God. Our Lord, I pray that you would
- 9:39open up our concept of our faith, that it would not just be
- 9:43ours, but that we too would see ourselves as part of this church
- 9:48that has worshipped you throughout the generations for
- 9:51thousands of years in the past and will do for thousands of
- 9:55years to come. You are the eternal God and we
- 9:59are your people throughout time, and we take our place in this
- 10:04long line of Your people, loved and forgiven, cherished and
- 10:10claimed as your special possession.
- 10:14We are so grateful that you would love us the way that you
- 10:17do. And so we love you back, and we
- 10:21praise you, and we pray all of this in your name, Jesus, Amen.
