- 0:03Speaker 1: Okay,
- 0:04Speaker 2: welcome to get your shoe together, the photographer's podcast where we discuss studio business life and keeping it all in line.
- 0:11Speaker 2: I am pure dairy berry and I'm married with Taylor and here we are Mary recording a podcast.
- 0:18Speaker 2: I know this is so exciting.
- 0:20Speaker 2: I um, I love a podcast because I don't have to put on like doing my hair and makeup.
- 0:25Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 0:25Speaker 2: I feel a little bit like, I feel a little bit like delicious dish.
- 0:29Speaker 2: Yes.
- 0:30Speaker 2: You know what I mean?
- 0:31Speaker 2: Like I feel it's kind of a lifelong dream to be able to do my own delicious dish.
- 0:35Speaker 2: So, so a goal achieved.
- 0:39Speaker 2: We like it.
- 0:41Speaker 2: Sure.
- 0:41Speaker 2: Site.
- 0:42Speaker 2: Yeah,
- 0:43Speaker 3: thrilled.
- 0:44Speaker 3: You know, I'm really excited about this, Karen.
- 0:46Speaker 3: We'd said this, you know, in our introduction as well, but just the whole idea of, you know, trying to just talk about real stuff, real photography stuff and real life stuff and I'm coming at it from such a, such a, a real authentic place and two of us, both of us, I know for a factor in the arena daily getting our butt kicked in this industry.
- 1:08Speaker 2: I like that
- 1:09Speaker 3: there's a lot and I hope that others get so much joy.
- 1:12Speaker 3: It's bringing me joy Kira.
- 1:14Speaker 2: And you know, if it doesn't spark joy then, and it's been, why bother apparently.
- 1:19Speaker 2: Why bother?
- 1:20Speaker 2: Why bother?
- 1:21Speaker 2: So, um, so I know that today we're going to be talking about celebrating wins and that's kind of, that's kind of our goal.
- 1:29Speaker 2: But I want to tell you about a wind that I, that just happened that I really need to celebrate.
- 1:34Speaker 2: Lay It on me, right?
- 1:36Speaker 2: So I'm feeling my way through this recording software podcast stuff, kind of crash coursing it thanks to Youtube, um, for teaching myself how to use garage band in the course of let's say four hours.
- 1:50Speaker 2: Let's just, let's just put a number on that.
- 1:52Speaker 2: Um, so I had intentions of having a podcast a long time ago and then just never really pulled the trigger on it.
- 1:57Speaker 2: And so I bought all this equipment along time ago that I never really learned how to use.
- 2:01Speaker 2: And so I plugged it all in today and I'm getting ready.
- 2:05Speaker 2: I'm like, I'm going to be so ready for when it's time to record.
- 2:08Speaker 2: And, uh, there was like a buzzing humming.
- 2:10Speaker 2: So fast forward to a lot of troubleshooting and freaking out and um, and uh, panic eating cookies.
- 2:16Speaker 2: I, I um, I am now located next to a music store and it dawned on me about 40 minutes ago that I should maybe go ask the guys at the music store, right.
- 2:30Speaker 2: Cause I didn't know what to do and I was just pulling my hair out.
- 2:33Speaker 2: I have literally scattered about me is co like a ton of cables and microphones and headsets and all kinds of different stuff.
- 2:41Speaker 2: Um, and so I went over next door and the guy, Bryce at music masters, um, literally came over here and helped me troubleshoot it and he was a lifesaver and he, um, uh, essentially said my mixer was my mixing board, was broken and not with, were not worth repairing and that's fine if that's the issue.
- 2:58Speaker 2: Cool.
- 2:58Speaker 2: I just need to know what issue is
- 3:00Speaker 3: right.
- 3:00Speaker 3: First of all, shout out to Bryce and music.
- 3:04Speaker 3: Masters of Tallahassee.
- 3:05Speaker 3: So anyway, I went back over to music masters, right.
- 3:07Speaker 2: Bought me, um, uh, an audio box, USB 96 and a at the recommendation of Bryce a pledge right in about, uh, five minutes before we started recording and it actually is working and I'm not hearing the buzzing that I was hearing and any way the day is saved, I am celebrating that win.
- 3:25Speaker 3: I'm going to sell it.
- 3:26Speaker 3: Cheers.
- 3:27Speaker 3: Cheers to that.
- 3:29Speaker 3: Here's what the Nice glass of, uh, unpretentious, true twine, pretentious fruit wine, which I will be diving headfirst into, um, and just a little bit.
- 3:39Speaker 3: And if I didn't have a, an actual job later, I would be already doing it to be honest.
- 3:43Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 3:44Speaker 3: I, you and I both, so I'm so excited.
- 3:46Speaker 3: Well, that's a great one.
- 3:47Speaker 3: I like it.
- 3:47Speaker 3: And that's what we're going to actually talk about today.
- 3:50Speaker 3: I'm racking my brain and you know, I'm a big fan of this.
- 3:53Speaker 3: I'm actually the like big, big fan of this and I'm really, today is, uh, it hasn't been any, a lot of wind winds today.
- 3:59Speaker 3: It's been a, a lot of lose, lose challenging day for Maryville is Taylor.
- 4:04Speaker 3: But I'm going to pull a win out and the wind for me is going to be my, uh, lookbooks or finally home from the printer.
- 4:12Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 4:13Speaker 3: Now they're sitting here staring at me.
- 4:15Speaker 3: Not really, but pretending I'm pretending like these cardboard boxes are staring at me cause I need to be labeled and you know, all that stuff to get out.
- 4:21Speaker 3: But they are done in back from the printer.
- 4:24Speaker 3: So we're going to go with that as a win for.
- 4:26Speaker 3: And how long, how long were you working on that?
- 4:28Speaker 3: Yeah, I had been working on that.
- 4:32Speaker 3: Um, that's embarrassing.
- 4:34Speaker 3: I've been working, so this was a spring, summer.
- 4:36Speaker 3: This was a spring lookbook that turned into a spring summer look book that is slowly crept prop possibly into a summer lookbook.
- 4:43Speaker 3: So march, March ish for sure.
- 4:45Speaker 3: All right.
- 4:46Speaker 3: So, so actually a pretty big win in the big land.
- 4:49Speaker 3: You're right, because you know what, as a, the Almighty jugglers of everything, as small business professional photographers, we're juggling so much stuff and uh, you know what, it just had to wait until now.
- 5:01Speaker 3: So I'm just going to go with that's a win and now's the right time to be putting these out.
- 5:04Speaker 3: So,
- 5:05Speaker 2: and not put out there the, the, the sourness of whatever happened today.
- 5:10Speaker 2: Okay.
- 5:10Speaker 2: So we're going to let that go.
- 5:11Speaker 2: Let that go.
- 5:11Speaker 2: We're going to celebrate the wins.
- 5:12Speaker 2: I like it.
- 5:13Speaker 2: You know, I, um, I get bummed out quite a bit, you know, in a and overwhelmed frequently.
- 5:21Speaker 2: Um, when I have um, a list, a mile long of things I have to do, cause you know, I mean we talk about this all the time.
- 5:26Speaker 2: When you're a photographer and you are a uh, you know, you're an entrepreneur, you are the accountant, you are the janitor, you are the photographer, you are the sales person, you are the um, tech support.
- 5:38Speaker 2: You are all the things right.
- 5:39Speaker 2: And sometimes it's really, really suffocating.
- 5:42Speaker 2: So there's been a few times where I am, I'm feeling overwhelmed and getting really down and out about like, um, maybe the sales goal that I've been trying to reach is just seems unattainable or maybe I just cannot get this lighting figured or whatever.
- 5:57Speaker 2: And it's nice when I have friends like you and I'm, and my Buddy Blu ray who I talk to frequently, he's always like, hey, have you ever sit back and just look about where you're at and think about where you were?
- 6:08Speaker 2: Because, because honestly, you know, I, I know that pretty much everyone I can think of, you've got so many wins in your court and you lose sight of that because you're looking ahead so far.
- 6:20Speaker 3: Exactly.
- 6:20Speaker 3: I mean, it's important to look ahead, right?
- 6:22Speaker 3: You think about driving a car and uh, you know, shout out to brewery for being such a supporter and bringing the positive two to light.
- 6:30Speaker 3: But you know, as a driver, you know, we look forward, that's what we're supposed to do.
- 6:32Speaker 3: But you do need to glance in that rear view mirror here and there.
- 6:35Speaker 3: And I think we forget to do that as one preneurs as small business owners is, mom's is blind friends, one printer know it's kind of learner.
- 6:44Speaker 3: But you know, we forget to do that and um, cause we're just so forward focused, which is great, but you know, we need to cut ourselves a break sometimes and look back and think, okay, wow, you know, this is a been a lot of, a lot of maybe a lot of small wins, maybe some big wins mixed in with small wins.
- 6:59Speaker 3: But you know, that's how we got here and you know, we've got a pretty awesome life.
- 7:04Speaker 3: So, um, I'm with you though.
- 7:06Speaker 3: It's easy to get bogged down by, by the, um, the things that didn't go exactly the way I planned or aren't going the way I planned.
- 7:13Speaker 3: It's just, it's just too, too easy to do that.
- 7:16Speaker 3: Um, but we need to stop doing that.
- 7:20Speaker 3: As a matter of fact, I think I had this conversation with you as being kind of gold being very goalie or oriented actually.
- 7:27Speaker 3: And I'm being a big fan of the journaling and the writing it down and messaging to myself and doing this on a daily basis, weekly basis, quarterly basis.
- 7:36Speaker 3: Um, I hit December and on such a high, like, I think I told you this, like, just such a high, like my year, I just, I had broken all my goals and I had been on track and I'd done all these things for my business.
- 7:49Speaker 3: And then I woke up one morning and it was January 1st and I had to start all over again.
- 7:55Speaker 3: And it's like, honestly, I became, I did, I became like, oh, I don't know.
- 8:00Speaker 3: And so this year has been a lesson for me too.
- 8:03Speaker 3: You know what?
- 8:04Speaker 3: It doesn't have to be these big, huge goals and huge wins.
- 8:08Speaker 3: I need to celebrate small stuff, like spending time with my husband or you know, finally getting around to taking better care of my health or, you know, whatever it is.
- 8:17Speaker 3: I mean, it could be doing the laundry, you know what I mean?
- 8:19Speaker 3: Right.
- 8:20Speaker 3: But you know, we just, I just needed to take it in smaller bites because, you know, life's too short to give up that quality.
- 8:26Speaker 3: And I think many of us do this.
- 8:28Speaker 3: Um, I don't know.
- 8:29Speaker 3: I know I do.
- 8:30Speaker 2: I totally do it.
- 8:31Speaker 2: I totally do it.
- 8:32Speaker 2: And then, you know, I get, I get so overwhelmed with, um, with, with goal setting as far as like a year out, I think you bring up a really good point cause you're like, I hit December on such a high, that's such a high for a lot of us who have family portrait studios, right?
- 8:47Speaker 2: Because that's like the high season.
- 8:49Speaker 2: Um, and then you come into January and it's just, it's just the traffic isn't coming in at the volume that it was coming in, aren't thinking about family photography and, and um, and that time of year.
- 8:59Speaker 2: I think for me that's always, um, that I realized was a problem this year, um, was that I am setting goals a year for the year.
- 9:08Speaker 2: Right.
- 9:09Speaker 2: You know, and, uh, setting goals for the year is like, oh, it's like so overwhelming and unattainable because some, you don't know what's gonna happen in the year.
- 9:17Speaker 2: You don't know what you're going to get hit with at any point in any quarter, you know?
- 9:20Speaker 2: And so I'm making it smaller and taking it down to, okay, so what's the three month goal?
- 9:28Speaker 2: Right?
- 9:28Speaker 2: Like, I don't even want to worry about what the year goal is.
- 9:32Speaker 2: Like let's say sales wise.
- 9:33Speaker 2: You know what I mean?
- 9:33Speaker 2: Like I, I honestly don't want even worry about what that is.
- 9:36Speaker 2: I just want to worry about what's my three month and then you can check in with yourself.
- 9:40Speaker 2: And we learned that from, Oh, well I learned that anyway, from, uh, from Ronan, um, Ryley and Sam and sitting through his presentation, you know, um, it was such a light bulb moment for me when he said that.
- 9:50Speaker 2: I was like, oh,
- 9:52Speaker 3: alright.
- 9:53Speaker 3: Yeah, rented Rolla three except solutions who I know we both love and he's so smart and you know, I, but I've, uh, for, for awhile now, I'm a big fan of that quarterly goal.
- 10:04Speaker 3: Keeping, cause I used to do it by the year.
- 10:05Speaker 3: So there's just so many issues with that.
- 10:07Speaker 3: You're right.
- 10:07Speaker 3: A, it's overwhelming to look at that whole year.
- 10:10Speaker 3: Me As the type of personality that I am, I think, well I have till December to reach this goal.
- 10:15Speaker 3: So it always seems so far away until it isn't, you know what I'm saying?
- 10:19Speaker 3: And um, and it's just overwhelming.
- 10:22Speaker 3: So when you take things in quarters and there's three months processes, it's just so much, you know, I think you stay on track easier because three months isn't that long.
- 10:29Speaker 3: So if you set three month goals, you're going to be checking in daily, weekly to, you know, to hit that three month.
- 10:36Speaker 3: If you're off course, do you still have the rest of the year or you have more time to get back on.
- 10:41Speaker 3: Right.
- 10:41Speaker 3: It doesn't feel like a failure if you didn't hit that and it's December, you know?
- 10:45Speaker 3: So, um, so here's a question for you then
- 10:48Speaker 2: on that note.
- 10:48Speaker 2: Um, so let's say that, let's say that you have a first quarter goal and you don't meet it, right?
- 10:55Speaker 2: Okay.
- 10:56Speaker 2: So if you, if you start that second quarter, are you adding what you didn't make to that first quarter to your second quarter?
- 11:03Speaker 2: Or are you just starting fresh and going, okay, we didn't make that first quarter goal, but the second quarter goal, we're adjusting and we're going from there.
- 11:10Speaker 2: Do you, do you try and pick up the slack of the first quarter into the second?
- 11:13Speaker 3: You know, I, yes and no.
- 11:15Speaker 3: I mean, because sometimes it's just too huge.
- 11:17Speaker 3: I mean, there could have been something if we had, for example, first quarter for me, what if we had a horrible, you know, weather wise, horrible winter, you know, horrible, you know, January, February.
- 11:26Speaker 3: But he's a weather.
- 11:27Speaker 3: I'm not sure I can, you know, make that up.
- 11:28Speaker 3: I can only work so hard.
- 11:30Speaker 3: It's just, you know, I do have a business partner, but it's just the two of us.
- 11:33Speaker 3: So I gotta be realistic with myself.
- 11:36Speaker 3: But I may try to spread that out, like, you know, kind of spread it out over the next three quarters to try to make up for a little bit of it.
- 11:44Speaker 3: Because I do start the year with a goal in mind and it's either meet the same, you know, amount of sales or sessions or whatever it is.
- 11:52Speaker 3: I try to do that every year and it just kind of sits there.
- 11:55Speaker 3: I don't focus on it on a daily or weekly basis, but I do look at it.
- 11:58Speaker 3: So if I have a terrible quarter then or I miss my marks, whatever, that I'm going to look at it and see if I can spread it out over what's left.
- 12:06Speaker 3: If not, I just got to chalk it up to, you know, what next year.
- 12:10Speaker 3: Um, you know, I made, I'll make notes why I think I will definitely look at why I think I didn't hit my goals right.
- 12:16Speaker 3: Was it weather?
- 12:17Speaker 3: Was it, um, I was out sick or I traveled too much or, you know, was it, but I didn't do my, I wasn't diligent with my email marketing or, you know, whatever it is.
- 12:27Speaker 3: Um, I will try to make those notes so that next year I don't make the same mistakes.
- 12:33Speaker 3: Um, but I don't know that we always can just say, oh, I'll just make it up next time.
- 12:36Speaker 3: It's kind of like catching up on sleep.
- 12:38Speaker 3: You really never know.
- 12:39Speaker 2: Yeah, you really can't really catch up on sleep, but you can go back and analyze that data and look at, look at what was the, when you know, it's like, okay, we didn't make that quarter, but we did gain these clients and we did gain this networking contact and we did get some new gear in the studio that was actually making a huge difference or, or solve the new process with our billing.
- 12:57Speaker 2: That's making a huge difference.
- 12:58Speaker 2: So I mean that's like they moved, you moved.
- 13:02Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 13:03Speaker 3: That's your business one way or the other.
- 13:04Speaker 3: But it's a win.
- 13:05Speaker 3: It's a huge win.
- 13:07Speaker 3: But it may throw that you may have had to close for a week or something or not take appointments for a week or something that could throw our numbers off.
- 13:12Speaker 2: But what a win.
- 13:13Speaker 2: I mean, we can't look at that as a negative.
- 13:15Speaker 2: Right, right, right.
- 13:16Speaker 2: In the process of moving.
- 13:18Speaker 2: I was so not able to focus on anything else, but getting, even that last week that I was in the studio, because I was really, if you ask my husband, he was like, so have you started packing the student?
- 13:29Speaker 2: No, I, I had not because at the same time that we were needing to pack up the studio and move, we were also renovating the new space that wasn't quite ready, you know?
- 13:39Speaker 2: So it was like, what ended up happening was I completely shut down as I'm prone to do, I completely shut down and basically had only am I, I could only come to the new studio and paint.
- 13:53Speaker 2: That was really all I was useful for at it for a time there.
- 13:57Speaker 2: That was when, and I got a lot of painting done and then I walked around and I was like, I don't like the color that I chose.
- 14:02Speaker 2: And my husband was like, that is my color that you chose and we are going to live with for now.
- 14:07Speaker 2: And so, you know, we just, we just, it was, it was a win and the, and the bigger win honestly was the fact that because I have such wonderful people in my life and I'm so lucky, my brother and my husband, while my mom and I and dad were over here working on the new space, they went over to the old studio for two days and clean that mother out.
- 14:27Speaker 2: They packed up everything.
- 14:29Speaker 2: Now did they pack it up the way that I would have packed it up?
- 14:33Speaker 2: No, but who was packing it up, Kara.
- 14:34Speaker 2: Exactly.
- 14:36Speaker 2: I know.
- 14:36Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 14:37Speaker 3: No and that's a really good point cause it would be easy and I'm definitely, it'd be easy for me to like nitpick that, but instead of just being so grateful for that, I'm grateful that for me I could easily get detoured into being like, well why did they pack it that
- 14:52Speaker 2: way and I wouldn't have done it.
- 14:53Speaker 2: That's okay.
- 14:54Speaker 2: It's done.
- 14:55Speaker 2: I get paid for done, let's move on.
- 14:58Speaker 2: And that's like a letting go process that I'm still learning.
- 15:01Speaker 2: Am I right?
- 15:01Speaker 2: Bullied?
- 15:02Speaker 2: So good for you for even recognizing it.
- 15:05Speaker 2: But it was, that move is huge.
- 15:06Speaker 2: And I love that question about what do you do.
- 15:08Speaker 2: But I mean it is, it's like catching up on sleep or something.
- 15:11Speaker 2: It's not really possible, but we always can learn and I feel like you're always can garner some type of wind from it because a lot of times if I have an off quarter or if my goals aren't hit, it's sometimes it's because maybe I'm curating or working on some bigger sales or are bigger things that just aren't going to hit.
- 15:28Speaker 2: And then 90 days because they're too huge, they're going to, it may take 120 days or more for those to hit and then I may have like a humongous next quarter, but it's kind of skewed because it, that work was actually done their ideas actually.
- 15:41Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 15:42Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 15:42Speaker 2: So like when, when did you actually make the money is actually an interesting question.
- 15:46Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 15:46Speaker 2: Um, but yeah, I, you know, and then the other thing that, um, that I was thinking about when we were, we promised each other, we wouldn't talk about this before the podcast so that we can do anything.
- 15:57Speaker 2: But the other thing I was thinking about was the fact that, um, work since the move, since moving into here, I have had so many wins, so many, like just, just the difference of the, of the layout of the studio.
- 16:11Speaker 2: I'm calling my sales room, the living room and it's all laid out.
- 16:15Speaker 2: Um, um, you know, so that when you're looking at the wall art, it kind of reminds you of maybe your own space, you know, I'm hoping anyway.
- 16:22Speaker 2: And, um, and so that's been really, really working out for me in the sales room.
- 16:25Speaker 2: And so everything in this new studio has been positive.
- 16:28Speaker 2: The new landlord is positive, the location is positive.
- 16:30Speaker 2: The fact that I am attached to a wine bar is positive.
- 16:33Speaker 2: Oh look, all of those things are positive.
- 16:35Speaker 2: And then at home, my daughter is really struggling like at school, you know what I mean?
- 16:41Speaker 2: And like I'm getting really stressed out about her and how school's going to go and what our summer plans are going to go.
- 16:45Speaker 2: And I just realized, you know what, it's one or the other.
- 16:48Speaker 2: Either things are going great at home, like she's doing great and you know, the house his degree in great and me and Kevin are doing great and everything's going great and the work is kind of suffering.
- 16:58Speaker 2: You know what I mean?
- 16:58Speaker 2: Like something's not going great at work, right?
- 17:01Speaker 2: Or it's like, it's like, it's like my mind focuses my dread as soon as one thing is relieved.
- 17:08Speaker 2: It's like I always had this sense of dread and that's, and that's why this is a really important subject, I think for everybody.
- 17:13Speaker 2: Because, because, and I don't celebrate, I don't wallow in my wins.
- 17:18Speaker 2: You know what I mean?
- 17:19Speaker 2: I should be ecstatic that this studio was going so well so far.
- 17:23Speaker 2: You know what I mean?
- 17:24Speaker 2: You think, do you think that that's like, and I love that.
- 17:26Speaker 2: And you're so right.
- 17:27Speaker 2: And I'm, I'm guilty of the same thing and I, and I understand exactly where you're coming from, that dichotomy of, you know, things are going good here but this is falling apart.
- 17:34Speaker 2: So like, do you think that it's a little bit like, um, that it's almost something we do to ourselves because I'm like, it's like, so say for example a business is going great or vice versa.
- 17:45Speaker 2: Personally, everything's going great, kids are great husbands, great, everything's good, and then business
- 17:50Speaker 3: isn't going great, then all of a sudden I can't be happy about anything good.
- 17:53Speaker 3: I have to like focus on the negative.
- 17:54Speaker 3: I have to follow in that.
- 17:56Speaker 3: Um, so then of course it's going to be bad because was like, I'm almost self prophesizing it for it to be bad.
- 18:02Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 18:02Speaker 3: I'm saying that it affects everything in your life.
- 18:05Speaker 3: You know what I mean?
- 18:05Speaker 3: Like, so you know, business is going great, but then, you know, all of a sudden now you're, you're super worried about, about your kids or about something at home or a fan or a parent or something like that, you know?
- 18:16Speaker 3: And then the business starts to suffer because you're starting to freak out on the other side, you know, or things are going great at home, but the business isn't going great in your struggling and freaking out about the business.
- 18:26Speaker 3: And then it's stressing everybody out at home because you can't, you know, because I can't just like leave it at work, you know?
- 18:34Speaker 3: And I don't, you know, we're one person, so I don't think we can, I'm not, uh, I'm not from the school of thought that we can do everything great or perfect or way.
- 18:45Speaker 3: I really am not, I don't know how it was one person.
- 18:48Speaker 3: I can be credibly and 100% intentional and present at home and in my personal family life and 100% present and intentional in my work life at all times.
- 18:59Speaker 3: But I think if we do do a better job scheduling ourselves to when we need to be aware and present, I think that would be super helpful in this whole journey.
- 19:09Speaker 3: And, and what I mean by that is really, really scheduling like ourselves, so that when I'm at work, I'm present at work and when I'm at home, I'm present at home and I think I've always got the Baggett I'm always carrying.
- 19:21Speaker 3: It's like I'm constantly carrying this really, really huge backpack of the other.
- 19:25Speaker 3: When I leave one, I still have the other one on my back.
- 19:28Speaker 3: And I don't think I ever just feel like I can be one place without the other creeping in one way or the other.
- 19:35Speaker 3: Right.
- 19:36Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 19:36Speaker 3: I mean, I don't know if scheduling would be helpful.
- 19:39Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 19:39Speaker 3: But I think that it's definitely a problem and I hear this from so many friends and photographers, um, and there's so much guilt and you know, I don't know.
- 19:49Speaker 3: And then the weight just like, oh, we got to stop doing that to ourselves.
- 19:52Speaker 3: I know that side of it, you know, it's ridiculous.
- 19:55Speaker 3: Um, but yeah, I just, I just think, I think that all of us beat ourselves up and we're not allowing ourselves and cutting our ourselves some slack.
- 20:03Speaker 3: And I'm saying these things out loud because I'm trying to cut myself some slack and be like, I'm telling her exactly right.
- 20:09Speaker 3: And it's always the end of the school year hustle, which is either the beginning of the school year, the end of the school year for some reason there's just so much anxiety and or dress and it's like, you know, with gay school year at see anxiety of, you know, sitting our little ducklings off to this like strange place and are they going to fit in and think I have friends or the teacher, you know, it's all the unknown.
- 20:27Speaker 3: The end of the school year it's like, did we do enough?
- 20:29Speaker 3: Did we, am I enough, are they enough?
- 20:31Speaker 3: Did you know?
- 20:31Speaker 3: And it's like one more year down and we're counting down their little lives, you know, and it's like, oh, we're at the end.
- 20:37Speaker 3: Did, are they where they need to be for the next chapter?
- 20:40Speaker 3: Would we know it?
- 20:40Speaker 3: Whatever that is.
- 20:41Speaker 3: And you were constantly, and I'm a big, you know, I'm a big fan of goal setting and forecasting, but sometimes I think that is a negative because I think it, um,
- 20:51Speaker 2: it creates a lot of anxiety.
- 20:53Speaker 2: Maybe it locks you in to tight kind of thing.
- 20:55Speaker 2: So loose goal setting.
- 20:56Speaker 2: So I want to go back to something you said a minute ago because I think, I think you're onto something here.
- 21:00Speaker 2: The scheduling thing, you know, because scheduling is loose, I think it is scheduled, but you can move things around.
- 21:08Speaker 2: And you know, one of the things that I did to try and help myself, um, um, uh, you know, leave it at work, um, was I stopped working on the weekends.
- 21:19Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 21:20Speaker 2: You know, I mean, occasionally I work on a weekend.
- 21:22Speaker 2: I mean, I'm not saying that if the right job, uh, you know, the right client, you know, it's a well qualified client that's been with me for a long time and this is when they can do it, then I'll make, I'll make time to do that.
- 21:30Speaker 2: But I charge a premium price to shoot on the weekends so that people really make an effort to shoot during the week, you know?
- 21:37Speaker 2: And that's not something that, you know, obviously I am veterinary thing.
- 21:40Speaker 2: I mean that's just, I feel like that's just common sense.
- 21:41Speaker 2: But it was one of those things where I, you know, photography is the kind of commodity that, uh, people who work in the real world, they don't, I don't think they always consider it a real job, you know, like a real night, eight to five, nine to five, you know, and um, so when you're already working, you know, 40 and 60 hours a week or whatever, you know, at, during the week, you've, you've got to take those weekends off.
- 22:04Speaker 2: It is so important.
- 22:05Speaker 2: And I wasn't doing that.
- 22:06Speaker 2: I was working, I used to go, well, I'll just not work on Sundays, you know, and then I would take two shoots on a Saturday, you know, and then I, and then I don't have any time to go do anything from, with my family.
- 22:16Speaker 2: You know, like we don't have time to go to brunch or to go to the zoo or to go on a trip or nothing because I had booked something out months ahead of time.
- 22:24Speaker 2: And so then what was happening because my husband and my daughter were going to the zoo by themselves without mom.
- 22:28Speaker 2: I went and did a shoot and it made me say guilty.
- 22:32Speaker 2: And then, you know, you're, if you're operating like that and you're exactly right and they're not pre qualified, then you may have given up an entire Saturday with your family and for, for somebody else's family, for somebody and maybe they're not even investing in you properly.
- 22:46Speaker 2: Right.
- 22:46Speaker 2: It's, it's for the convenient.
- 22:48Speaker 2: What I started realizing that when I started bending over, I'm all about being, you know, um, you know, meeting a client's needs.
- 22:55Speaker 2: But when I start making it convenient for them, more convenient for them to work with me on the weekend, I want them to work with me because they want to work with me.
- 23:02Speaker 2: And if they want to work with me that I'm only available Monday through Friday.
- 23:06Speaker 2: And when I really start thinking about it, I really would like to start narrowing that Monday through Friday down to on Mondays and Tuesdays.
- 23:13Speaker 2: I do these things.
- 23:14Speaker 2: I think you're on the APP.
- 23:15Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 23:16Speaker 3: I think we have to do start doing that with our lives because here again, I'm going to use the word again, but as the person that, the one printer, but the one who we've got a market, we've got a network, we've got to, you know, do all these other things.
- 23:28Speaker 3: Um, and our small businesses, if we're not setting this, I don't, I think it's so hard to just continually changed gears.
- 23:35Speaker 3: So it's like, okay, I'm going to photograph and now I'm gonna, now I'm gonna work on some marketing.
- 23:37Speaker 3: Oh No, now I've got an order on the phone now I got a phone call.
- 23:41Speaker 3: There's no way we're doing anything.
- 23:43Speaker 3: 100.
- 23:44Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 23:44Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 23:44Speaker 3: Um, so I think scheduling a day or two a week that those are your days to, you know, invest in your business and invest in those, the marketing and edgy, whatever it is.
- 23:54Speaker 3: I think we have to do that in order to find any kind of balance.
- 23:58Speaker 3: And maybe that type of discipline would lead into our personal life and caused us to say, nope, you know what, I will I evenings and weekends are off the table unless, like you said there, they've invested, there's a pre determined, you know, investment level, they've signed a proposal or, or whatever it is.
- 24:15Speaker 3: Um, but, uh, and which we all do.
- 24:18Speaker 3: I mean, I definitely do that.
- 24:19Speaker 3: If someone comes in and I do, I'm going to do a commission and I know guaranteed up front what it's going to be, or at least what we've speculated, yeah, I'm going to come in on a Saturday or a son even has to leave.
- 24:27Speaker 3: We had to absolutely.
- 24:29Speaker 2: But you know, you know what you have to do to get that kind of job done.
- 24:33Speaker 2: Right.
- 24:33Speaker 2: You know what I mean?
- 24:34Speaker 2: Like today for example, um, and I know we're kind of veering off subject, but I just think this is a fascinating one.
- 24:39Speaker 2: Today, for example, I took a job that is, um, after hours for me that I don't normally do during the week because it was with, um, a magazine.
- 24:48Speaker 2: I'm a state magazine that I really wanted to work, get my foot in the door with their, you know, and they called for the first time and it's a small gig and it's nothing fancy, but it was just like, you know what, I would love to get on their vendor list as a photographer, you know?
- 25:00Speaker 2: And I think if I say no to this, then maybe I might not get another opportunity to get my foot in the door, you know, so, so now I'm going to go do this at, you know, at later, at six o'clock and it's just a quick one off thing.
- 25:11Speaker 2: But, you know, I make those, you make those concessions depending on the thing, but I honestly, you know, I think I'm going to start doing like, you know, maybe Tuesdays and Thursdays are headshot days in the studio, you know, maybe, maybe Monday is marketing day or, you know, um, I know everybody's already doing this.
- 25:27Speaker 2: This is just how I'm just talking out loud to get my stuff together.
- 25:30Speaker 3: No, I don't think people are, I know you, it seems, it seems obvious to all of this, but I talked to Tiffany photographers and you do as well.
- 25:36Speaker 3: They don't, they, they want to value their time and they want others, but they really in truly don't because what happens is the bank balance gets balanced, gets a little low or the schedule is looking a little too open and we started feeling desperate and we no longer value our brand and our var ourselves.
- 25:51Speaker 3: And there's minute we start doing that.
- 25:53Speaker 3: We start with concessions and when you start conceding then your years working a little bit later or you're coming in on the weekend and I think we all have done it and will continue to do it when we feel a little anxious about what our schedule looks like.
- 26:08Speaker 3: You know, what goals we're not hitting.
- 26:10Speaker 2: And the, and the other thing that starts to happen that I know this makes me super anxious is when you lose control over the situation with the client.
- 26:18Speaker 2: When the client starts calling, basically calling the shots, like the clients deciding when you're gonna do it and for how much and for how much time.
- 26:25Speaker 2: And you know what I mean?
- 26:27Speaker 2: Like the second that somebody asked me, the second that somebody asked me how, how, how much does it cost for three hours of photography?
- 26:33Speaker 2: And I'm not a wedding photographer, so, you know what I mean?
- 26:35Speaker 2: But, so when somebody, a family, a family inquiry asked me how much for like two hours or three hours of photography that kind of like gets my, yeah.
- 26:44Speaker 2: My hairs on their skin.
- 26:45Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 26:45Speaker 2: I'm just like, oh, I feel, I'm like, what are you talking about?
- 26:48Speaker 2: It's just not even the point of what I do.
- 26:50Speaker 2: That's not how I do, you know, that's, I don't, none of what I do focuses on the amount of time that we do it for, you know what I mean?
- 26:55Speaker 2: Like it's not it, you know?
- 26:57Speaker 2: Um, and so that's when I go ahead and start clarifying or whatever and get control back at the situation.
- 27:02Speaker 2: But yeah, when you start making concessions like that you, um, based on what the client asks you, then you really start to compromise and you sink back into that like anxiety pit.
- 27:13Speaker 2: Um, 100% that I um, that I go to wholefoods happy hour about and then drop my troubles away.
- 27:21Speaker 2: You know, we talking about
- 27:22Speaker 3: celebrate the small wins.
- 27:23Speaker 3: There's, if you like, there's a few little things and I mean this is just like my little goto lists.
- 27:27Speaker 3: Like you have to like, you have to know him, right?
- 27:30Speaker 3: You have to notice them.
- 27:31Speaker 3: You have to take a minute, take a beat, take a pause and actually acknowledge like you did with the, you know, with Bryce next door or helping you out and getting that, you know, sound thing straight.
- 27:41Speaker 3: Me Owning something.
- 27:42Speaker 3: Cause it would be so easy for me to go for the rest of the day and not own a single positive thing.
- 27:46Speaker 3: So for me to say, you know what, it took me a long time.
- 27:48Speaker 3: These catalogs are done, they look great.
- 27:51Speaker 3: They're going out this week.
- 27:52Speaker 3: I need to take the time to notice it.
- 27:54Speaker 3: And we don't do that and be okay to get excited about it as silly or as small as it is.
- 28:00Speaker 3: Maybe, you know, I'm excited because I actually went to the gym this morning or you know, I didn't, I made the bed.
- 28:05Speaker 3: I mean, I don't know, whatever it is, be okay with taking a moment and being celebrating it and being like, good for you man.
- 28:12Speaker 3: You know, you gotta make,
- 28:13Speaker 2: you're making steps.
- 28:14Speaker 2: You don't, you know what?
- 28:15Speaker 2: I did marry that.
- 28:16Speaker 2: I would like to celebrate.
- 28:17Speaker 2: Speaking of that because you're reminding me of it.
- 28:20Speaker 2: Um, you went to the gym.
- 28:21Speaker 2: I purchased a sports bra and so I'm on, I'm on my way close.
- 28:26Speaker 2: Same, very close to nailing down a time of day that I will work, put it on, I will put it on, maybe put it on and just wear it around the house.
- 28:35Speaker 2: But now like you know,
- 28:35Speaker 3: it's not to whole foods you like put it on and go to the gym in it or go like they go on a walk.
- 28:41Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 28:41Speaker 2: Going to the gym seems like excessive.
- 28:43Speaker 2: Honestly I think, no.
- 28:44Speaker 2: I think if I put on the workout gear, I will be motivated to like take a walk to the whole foods.
- 28:51Speaker 2: All right.
- 28:51Speaker 2: You know, cause it's like in the neighborhood.
- 28:53Speaker 2: Yes.
- 28:54Speaker 2: Um, but I'm sure you're going to look like every other, I will look like all of the other women hanging out.
- 29:01Speaker 2: Even the whole is there.
- 29:03Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm celebrating that with, I'm telling you I'm taking the steps in moving forward towards taking a walk.
- 29:10Speaker 2: Okay.
- 29:11Speaker 2: And you just, you just hit my third little Goto was hauling.
- 29:15Speaker 2: You communicated in, there you go.
- 29:18Speaker 2: I'm telling people about it.
- 29:19Speaker 2: When you say it out loud, it makes it bigger and more exciting.
- 29:23Speaker 2: I will, I will say I didn't love the fit of the sports bras so I, I'm, I do need to exchange it.
- 29:31Speaker 2: Um, showed that, oh that and it's, you know, it's mail order, so we'll mail order it now.
- 29:36Speaker 2: Online orders.
- 29:36Speaker 2: So I dunno,
- 29:38Speaker 3: you have to go to the post office or something.
- 29:40Speaker 3: Cause like for some reason that's the bane of my existence.
- 29:42Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 29:43Speaker 2: If it doesn't fit in my gigantic mailbox to go back out, then it may never get returned.
- 29:47Speaker 2: Okay.
- 29:47Speaker 2: Cause I'm like, if I have to go to a post office or ups store, it may never happen.
- 29:53Speaker 2: It may never happen.
- 29:54Speaker 2: There are some things that are conveniently located for me and that's really the only reason that anything happens.
- 29:59Speaker 2: So, you know, we have a ups store next to the publics, so if I have, but I don't like to go to the grocery store in general.
- 30:05Speaker 2: So it's rare.
- 30:06Speaker 2: Anyway.
- 30:07Speaker 2: I have a lot of problems obviously.
- 30:08Speaker 2: Um, but you know, I'm celebrating the wins and today's when of course is that I'm getting to talk to you and it sounds somewhat normal and it's not buzzing.
- 30:19Speaker 2: And now I have new friends next door at the, at the music store.
- 30:22Speaker 2: I mean that's exciting.
- 30:23Speaker 2: That in itself is an exciting thing and I'm excited about this podcast.
- 30:27Speaker 2: And you know what, that's the next part about celebrating those wins is creating habits that continue the process of, of small wins.
- 30:34Speaker 2: So us creating this podcast is a win, right?
- 30:38Speaker 2: And then doing it, which is going to continue to put wins in our life every time I think it is.
- 30:43Speaker 2: And let me, if you're listening to this and you're relating to it at all and you're thinking to yourself, you know, I don't celebrate my wins enough.
- 30:51Speaker 2: Um, I would actually, Mary and I would actually, I'd love to hear about your wins.
- 30:54Speaker 2: I'd love to hear about something that you won recently.
- 30:57Speaker 2: Um, whether it was something in your business or at home or personally, I think that would be something worth sharing.
- 31:02Speaker 2: And then, and then we will celebrate it with you so you can celebrate those wins with us.
- 31:06Speaker 2: You can email us because we have an email address and I'm arguing mail address so much.
- 31:11Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 31:11Speaker 2: And I probably works, might work.
- 31:15Speaker 2: Um, so our email address, if you would like to email us as girl at, get your shoot together.com.
- 31:22Speaker 2: Oh my gosh, it's the best email address ever though.
- 31:25Speaker 2: I think I still got to see it starting to do questions at or info at or whatever.
- 31:30Speaker 2: And I was just like, girl, I need to identify this part of, since, since we're early in our podcasting or here, um, I'm not somebody who says, girl, hmm, that's not, that's not a word that I use.
- 31:43Speaker 2: Like I don't refer to other women.
- 31:44Speaker 2: I don't, I know that you do, but we didn't, we weren't that close.
- 31:49Speaker 2: You know?
- 31:49Speaker 2: I feel like there's what you grow.
- 31:51Speaker 2: You're like, I don't know why.
- 31:52Speaker 2: Like I just texted you or I don't know what it was.
- 31:54Speaker 2: I was like, girl.
- 31:55Speaker 2: And you're like, girl, you're in my phone as girl.
- 31:57Speaker 2: I like, that's what it's like.
- 31:58Speaker 2: It just says girl period.
- 32:00Speaker 2: And it's just like one day, I don't remember which one of us said it, but all of a sudden it was just like girl, Girl.
- 32:05Speaker 2: And it just stuck because sometimes we speak Spanish too, so sometimes it's, it's um, oh gosh, now I forgot.
- 32:13Speaker 2: What does that move hair?
- 32:15Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 32:16Speaker 2: I think Elliot wholefoods happy hour.
- 32:18Speaker 2: Can I speak Spanish?
- 32:19Speaker 2: That would be solely outside.
- 32:20Speaker 2: Yeah, sometimes.
- 32:21Speaker 2: Yeah, you're long distance.
- 32:24Speaker 2: Whole food.
- 32:24Speaker 2: Happy hour, bring it.
- 32:25Speaker 2: Um, so anyway, yeah, if you would like to share some wins with this, please do.
- 32:30Speaker 2: Because we love to hear about that.
- 32:31Speaker 2: I'm so you can email us.
- 32:31Speaker 2: We also, by this time as you're listening to this, we have an Instagram account.
- 32:36Speaker 2: Mary, I have, I don't know exactly what we're going to pose, but when we post stuff you should, you should also comment on it.
- 32:43Speaker 2: It's, um, get your shit together on Instagram at, get your shit together.
- 32:47Speaker 2: I mean, and it's got the cutest little characters.
- 32:49Speaker 2: I'm Kira and I ever where you were like, we had these characters down of us and you were like, hey, it looks good.
- 32:57Speaker 2: And I was like, hey, um, but could my arm and be different and could also my leg be different.
- 33:01Speaker 2: And also I don't like that they put a split in my bangs even though I know my banks have a split in.
- 33:05Speaker 2: I'm quite a bit, I just don't like that.
- 33:06Speaker 2: So good.
- 33:07Speaker 2: He fixed that.
- 33:08Speaker 2: And also, yeah, I literally had three arms and I'm like, it's fine with me.
- 33:11Speaker 2: I'm totally cool with it.
- 33:12Speaker 2: Just let it roll and cursing.
- 33:14Speaker 2: No, let's fix it.
- 33:14Speaker 2: Anyway.
- 33:15Speaker 2: I was be the girl who's neurotic about her cartoon character version of herself.
- 33:19Speaker 2: Like I'm self conscious and body conscious about this cartoon character.
- 33:22Speaker 2: And there was a bedding.
- 33:23Speaker 2: If there was any betting going on here, which is there is not that I, the bet would have been done.
- 33:26Speaker 2: You for sure.
- 33:27Speaker 2: You would have definitely been the winner of that.
- 33:30Speaker 2: I was like, can I am excited Instagram email, we're definitely get your shit together.
- 33:33Speaker 2: I think, uh, we're gonna, you know, leave me a shout out or certainly try it, you know, do you respond in a timely fashion?
- 33:40Speaker 2: Um, because that's amazing.
- 33:42Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 33:42Speaker 2: You know, or not maybe make me, might take a long time.
- 33:44Speaker 2: We don't know where this is true.
- 33:47Speaker 2: I'm a little more, I'm a little more on that are get curious too.
- 33:50Speaker 2: She's totally kidding.
- 33:52Speaker 2: I really am.
- 33:52Speaker 2: No, we will respond to you.
- 33:53Speaker 2: I'm excited to hear about it.
- 33:54Speaker 2: So anyway, do that for us guys and uh, and keep listening.
- 33:57Speaker 2: We have tons of other topics that we really want to dive into.
- 34:00Speaker 2: So anyway, I hope that, um, that you, uh, are putting aside all your loses, um, for the day and celebrating the, even the smallest win.
- 34:09Speaker 2: Um, because it's so important for just keeping yourself in check.
- 34:12Speaker 2: Exactly.
- 34:13Speaker 2: And here we are married in Kira, and this is the get your shit together podcast, and it's for photographers hoping to help you get in line your studio business life.

- 34:27Speaker 2: So keep tuning in.
- 34:28Speaker 2: We really enjoy it.
- 34:30Speaker 2: Great.
- 34:30Speaker 2: And we will see you guys next time.
- 34:32Speaker 2: Thanks y'all.
- 34:45Speaker 1: [inaudible].
