- 0:00Speaker 1: Alex, thanks for joining us here at the top. How
- 0:04Speaker 1: you doing. How is the first few days at camp? Officially,
- 0:07Speaker 1: I guess for position players out there in the first
- 0:09Speaker 1: few days and games.
- 0:11Speaker 2: Yeah, thanks for having me. It's been great. Guys, came
- 0:15Speaker 2: to camp ready to go. We've been getting after it
- 0:17Speaker 2: and I think the vibe is great here.
- 0:20Speaker 3: Have you played yet? I have.
- 0:21Speaker 2: I've played two games, three innings here, the first spring
- 0:24Speaker 2: training game, and then went over to uh Sam Fran
- 0:28Speaker 2: and played five there, and then now playing today.
- 0:30Speaker 3: Wait, they made you go on the counts, made you
- 0:32Speaker 3: go on the road.
- 0:33Speaker 4: It's all good.
- 0:34Speaker 5: Say it counts, bro, Listen. I'm a veteran, I was
- 0:36Speaker 5: a free agent. I had this huge deal. I shouldn't
- 0:39Speaker 5: even have great pants.
- 0:40Speaker 2: No, no, it's all Uh, it's good obviously. Uh living
- 0:44Speaker 2: here in PV that complex is right by the house,
- 0:46Speaker 2: so slid over there for five innings. Great time. And uh,
- 0:51Speaker 2: it's been great out here.
- 0:52Speaker 3: I love Weather's been love spring.
- 0:54Speaker 4: I've been loving spring training out here.
- 0:55Speaker 3: This is your first this is your first time out here.
- 0:57Speaker 2: Right, yeah, it is nine the first nine in Florida
- 1:02Speaker 2: and then now here for the first time where we
- 1:04Speaker 2: live in the off season.
- 1:05Speaker 3: So it's been semi. Did you get Cassemi.
- 1:08Speaker 4: Yeah, first year was in Cassemi and then we moved
- 1:10Speaker 4: down to west On Beach.
- 1:11Speaker 5: A little better than Cassemi. For people that I don't know,
- 1:14Speaker 5: it's a little bit of an upgrade. His hosabilities are
- 1:17Speaker 5: slightly what you like here in Chicago, land in Mesa
- 1:22Speaker 5: with its Sloane Park, with the Cubs fitting in, everyone
- 1:25Speaker 5: treating you, everyone nice to you.
- 1:27Speaker 2: Yeah, it's been it's been great. I think it's a
- 1:29Speaker 2: it's a great group of great group of guys. Organization
- 1:33Speaker 2: has been first class since the minute that I began
- 1:36Speaker 2: talking to them in this offseason.
- 1:37Speaker 4: So I feel like the mindset's in the right place.
- 1:42Speaker 2: We've been extremely efficient here during spring training and everybody's
- 1:47Speaker 2: been getting their work in.
- 1:48Speaker 4: So looking forward to uh getting it started.
- 1:51Speaker 6: How long was that process when they first contacted your
- 1:55Speaker 6: agent or you know, when you first started talking to
- 1:59Speaker 6: the US this offseason, because a lot of people think
- 2:02Speaker 6: it happens either in two days or it happens the
- 2:04Speaker 6: entire offseason, and we have no idea what the process
- 2:07Speaker 6: is like.
- 2:09Speaker 2: Yeah, we Larry shout right away right when the season ended,
- 2:13Speaker 2: and then uh kind of stayed in touch throughout throughout
- 2:17Speaker 2: November and December, and things started to heat up in January,
- 2:23Speaker 2: and uh I was fortunate enough to get a get
- 2:26Speaker 2: a deal done.
- 2:28Speaker 5: Everyone just assumed you're going back to the Red Sox,
- 2:30Speaker 5: like it was like, oh, Ragmand he did great, they
- 2:33Speaker 5: have money, They're a big market team. You're just gonna
- 2:35Speaker 5: go back to the Red Sox. I was surprised that
- 2:39Speaker 5: you didn't go back to the Red Sox. Were you
- 2:41Speaker 5: surprised and you don't have I would love for you
- 2:45Speaker 5: to answer, you don't have to, though. Was the not
- 2:47Speaker 5: trade thing a thing? Was that really a thing? Because
- 2:49Speaker 5: because that was like what everyone said was the reason
- 2:51Speaker 5: why you ended up in Chicago and now Boston and
- 2:54Speaker 5: the owners of the Red Sox, well, Bragman wanted to
- 2:56Speaker 5: be here, he'd be here right.
- 2:58Speaker 3: So was that was that a thing or was just
- 3:00Speaker 3: not a thing?
- 3:00Speaker 7: Well?
- 3:01Speaker 2: I think first and foremost, I loved I loved the
- 3:04Speaker 2: year in Boston. I love playing for ac unbelievable friend
- 3:09Speaker 2: and also a manager, and my teammates there were incredible.
- 3:14Speaker 2: I don't know if if I look back at the
- 3:16Speaker 2: beginning of free agency, maybe a little surprise, But for me,
- 3:22Speaker 2: this whole, this whole process, the the Cubs really showed
- 3:25Speaker 2: that they valued what was important to my my wife, myself,
- 3:29Speaker 2: our family, and I couldn't be more excited to UH
- 3:33Speaker 2: to be able to raise Knox and Bennett in in Chicago,
- 3:36Speaker 2: and I'm looking forward to it. I feel like beginning
- 3:41Speaker 2: of the free agent process, for me, it was really
- 3:44Speaker 2: important UH to be in a place that I felt
- 3:46Speaker 2: like I could win, and Chicago definitely checked that box.
- 3:50Speaker 2: And I feel like this group UH already made a
- 3:54Speaker 2: deep postseason run last year and I looked forward to
- 3:56Speaker 2: adding to it and doing my piece and and helping out.
- 4:00Speaker 6: Do you feel like you're leaving one of your superpowers
- 4:03Speaker 6: in Boston though, because I feel like anybody can look
- 4:06Speaker 6: at your baseball card and go through this. Dude's had
- 4:08Speaker 6: an unbelievable career. But everything that people talked about this offseason,
- 4:12Speaker 6: anybody that's ever played with you, they're like, Breggie's superpower
- 4:16Speaker 6: is he makes other players better, especially younger players. When
- 4:20Speaker 6: you talk about the rookies that they had up there
- 4:23Speaker 6: in Boston, So do you feel like you can still
- 4:25Speaker 6: do that here with more of a veteran team and
- 4:28Speaker 6: a few younger guys mixed in.
- 4:31Speaker 2: Well, I feel like it's gonna be a little bit different, obviously,
- 4:36Speaker 2: being around a bunch of guys that have been in
- 4:38Speaker 2: the league for a long time, and I think it's
- 4:41Speaker 2: just baseball conversations. I feel like the best teams I've
- 4:44Speaker 2: been on have communicated the best with one another. They've
- 4:47Speaker 2: talked the game, They've helped each other improve at the game,
- 4:50Speaker 2: whether it's hitting, defense, running the bases, whatever it may be.
- 4:54Speaker 2: I feel like teams that communicate, teams that prepare to
- 4:59Speaker 2: go out there scut are are the best teams that
- 5:01Speaker 2: I've been on. And I think those conversations are already
- 5:04Speaker 2: starting here here in camp and just attention to detail
- 5:08Speaker 2: and focus on focus on getting a little bit better,
- 5:13Speaker 2: one percent better. And I feel like all these guys
- 5:15Speaker 2: heads are in the right spot and I'm excited to
- 5:19Speaker 2: be a part of this group.
- 5:20Speaker 4: And it'll be a little different, but it'll, uh, it'll
- 5:22Speaker 4: be good.
- 5:23Speaker 5: Danzy Swanson's on this team. Does he let you know
- 5:26Speaker 5: that he was drafted as ahead of you in the draft?
- 5:28Speaker 3: Oh?
- 5:28Speaker 2: Yeah, first meeting, UH, when it was time to introduce,
- 5:31Speaker 2: uh introduced guys to the team, he definitely let me know.
- 5:34Speaker 4: It's great.
- 5:34Speaker 5: So no hard feelings because you know you were too,
- 5:37Speaker 5: because you were in the second pig.
- 5:39Speaker 4: Yeah, not at all, not at all. He let me
- 5:40Speaker 4: know that.
- 5:41Speaker 2: He let me know he was taking first overall and
- 5:43Speaker 2: that Vanderbilt won the national stamps.
- 5:46Speaker 4: It's been good, it's been good. Banter all around camp.
- 5:49Speaker 5: Okay, that's good. That's good to you know. We're not
- 5:52Speaker 5: taking it too personal at all, because you know it's good.
- 5:54Speaker 5: I like, it's awesome. Uh, you just opened a facility here, right,
- 5:59Speaker 5: Why did you do that? And the people that don't
- 6:01Speaker 5: know if you want to give a little plug. Is
- 6:02Speaker 5: it only for professional guys? Can anyone come in?
- 6:05Speaker 4: No?
- 6:05Speaker 3: And like old retired guys like me come in and
- 6:07Speaker 3: take some swings.
- 6:08Speaker 4: Oh, for sure you could come in.
- 6:11Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 6:11Speaker 4: We launched Nemesis this offseason.
- 6:15Speaker 2: We wanted to create a one stop shop for guys
- 6:18Speaker 2: to come get physical therapy, strength and conditioning, skill specific work.
- 6:23Speaker 2: We got a nutritionist, sports psychologist, massage therapist, cairo all
- 6:30Speaker 2: in one place. And I felt like my first few
- 6:32Speaker 2: off seasons here, I was working out in North Scottsdale
- 6:36Speaker 2: and driving two hours down to Mace at a HIT
- 6:40Speaker 2: and then by the end of the day, I'd be
- 6:43Speaker 2: by the end of the day, it'd be five o'clock.
- 6:44Speaker 2: I'ld be a longer workday than during the season. So
- 6:48Speaker 2: I felt like we wanted to put all of everything
- 6:51Speaker 2: that you would need in an offseason in one spot
- 6:54Speaker 2: and be able to have incredible baseball minds in there
- 6:58Speaker 2: just talking the game. And I feel like I feel
- 7:01Speaker 2: like all the guys that came in would tell you
- 7:03Speaker 2: that the baseball conversations were great. I feel like a
- 7:05Speaker 2: lot of people learned a lot from other guys. I
- 7:08Speaker 2: know I did getting to pick the brain of Matt
- 7:10Speaker 2: Chapman and Ryan McMahon about playing defense at third base,
- 7:13Speaker 2: and just created a great clubhouse atmosphere, and hopefully this
- 7:19Speaker 2: next offseason will get bigger and bigger and better and better.
- 7:22Speaker 6: You got the facility, so you got everything. Taking care
- 7:25Speaker 6: for the off season, what do you What did you
- 7:27Speaker 6: work on this offseason so that you can have a
- 7:30Speaker 6: better year this year or do something that you wish
- 7:33Speaker 6: you were able to do the last few years that
- 7:35Speaker 6: you now can do this year.
- 7:38Speaker 2: Well, I think I think first and foremost got to
- 7:41Speaker 2: take pride in being available and got hurt last year,
- 7:45Speaker 2: so I wanted to make sure that I was healthy
- 7:48Speaker 2: for one sixty two in a postseason run, so really
- 7:52Speaker 2: locked in on the strength conditioning and physical therapy and
- 7:56Speaker 2: just making sure my body was in a good position
- 7:58Speaker 2: to succeed. And I think the two things that I
- 8:01Speaker 2: want to work on for sure this year is lowering
- 8:05Speaker 2: my swing rate, getting it back down into like the
- 8:08Speaker 2: thirty thirty five to thirty nine range. I felt like
- 8:11Speaker 2: I was swinging a little bit too much the past
- 8:13Speaker 2: few years, and that's not necessarily being passive, it's just
- 8:17Speaker 2: being more like aggressively selective at the dish and then
- 8:22Speaker 2: also making contact further out in front of home plate.
- 8:25Speaker 2: From April through about May fifteenth, when I got hurt
- 8:29Speaker 2: last year, I was making contact back out in front
- 8:31Speaker 2: of home plate where I was making contact in twenty
- 8:33Speaker 2: eighteen and twenty nineteen and had probably the best month
- 8:36Speaker 2: and a half stretch of my career. And when I
- 8:39Speaker 2: came back off the il, my contact was a little
- 8:43Speaker 2: bit deeper, and I think a lot of that was mechanics,
- 8:46Speaker 2: but hopefully trying to couple those two things of swinging
- 8:49Speaker 2: at good pitches that I can do damage on and
- 8:51Speaker 2: making contact out in front of home plate to do
- 8:53Speaker 2: the damage.
- 8:54Speaker 5: All right, thank you for joining us. But before I
- 8:56Speaker 5: let you go, I have to ask you one question.
- 8:57Speaker 5: Is it unfair that LSU has Ain's and Marucci backing them?
- 9:01Speaker 5: Do you feel like they have an unfair advantage in
- 9:03Speaker 5: NIL because of those two companies?
- 9:06Speaker 4: Not at all.
- 9:06Speaker 2: They also got Jay Johnson, who is the man. So
- 9:10Speaker 2: I think that, uh, I think that down in down
- 9:13Speaker 2: in bat and Ruge, they love baseball and they're definitely
- 9:16Speaker 2: going to support their baseball team.
- 9:18Speaker 5: So do you support them more than Kratz supports his
- 9:20Speaker 5: universe one hundred percent?
- 9:21Speaker 4: I don't even know what who is Kratz's university.
- 9:24Speaker 3: Eastern Mennonite Universe?
- 9:25Speaker 4: Yes, definitely.
- 9:26Speaker 3: Have you given one dollar to l s U?
- 9:28Speaker 5: Yes, and then you've already You've already won, You've already
- 9:30Speaker 5: won up on Crafts.
- 9:33Speaker 8: It's so true.
- 9:34Speaker 6: At least at least I went to college, and I
- 9:37Speaker 6: give my college that I went to.
- 9:40Speaker 3: Okay, good, all right, Greg Me, thanks buddy, you have
- 9:43Speaker 3: a great year. Appreciate it.
- 9:45Speaker 1: The number one rated ticketing app is seat Geek, and
- 9:48Speaker 1: you can get ten percent off on seat geeks app
- 9:51Speaker 1: by using the code territory ten, so you should use it.
- 9:54Speaker 5: AJ Oh, I'm definitely gonna use it for WBC games
- 9:57Speaker 5: in Jammy because I want to go to the semifinals.
- 9:59Speaker 1: In the final, they're gonna be sold out.
- 10:01Speaker 5: Absolutely gonna go spring training games for the people out
- 10:03Speaker 5: there who want to go to spring training games. Absolutely
- 10:05Speaker 5: great idea, best seats radar one through ten. And I
- 10:07Speaker 5: recently had to use sea geek to buy tickets to
- 10:09Speaker 5: a Florida Gators basketball game that was sold out. So
- 10:12Speaker 5: I love the code Territory ten percent off and the
- 10:15Speaker 5: rating is the best.
- 10:16Speaker 1: Yes, he's talking about each ticket rated on a scale
- 10:18Speaker 1: of one to ten, so you know you're getting a
- 10:20Speaker 1: good deal. So look for the green dots. Green means good,
- 10:22Speaker 1: red means bad. And of course we have a code
- 10:25Speaker 1: for you. Like I mentioned, it's Territory ten for ten
- 10:29Speaker 1: percent off your next set of tickets at se geek.
- 10:31Speaker 1: That's ten percent off any tickets with promo code t
- 10:34Speaker 1: E R R I O R Y one zero. Make
- 10:37Speaker 1: sure you click the link in the description and download
- 10:39Speaker 1: the app and have the code automatically added to your
- 10:41Speaker 1: account so you can use it later. Thank you to
- 10:45Speaker 1: see geek. He led the Cubs and Dingers last year
- 10:57Speaker 1: thirty four than Michael Bush joining us right now the
- 11:00Speaker 1: food over there in Arizona, sitting next to AJ Michael.
- 11:03Speaker 1: Great to have you on the show. Thanks for the time.
- 11:04Speaker 8: Man.
- 11:05Speaker 1: How's the off season or how was the off season?
- 11:07Speaker 1: And then how's spring training for you? With some fresh faces,
- 11:10Speaker 1: do you feel like this team has, you know, even
- 11:12Speaker 1: more energy than it did last year, say with some
- 11:16Speaker 1: of the moves that they made too.
- 11:19Speaker 9: Yeah, well, I appreciate you having me on here.
- 11:21Speaker 3: I think absolutely.
- 11:23Speaker 10: I think just adding obviously a guy like Bregman who
- 11:28Speaker 10: you know, have only known him for a few weeks now,
- 11:30Speaker 10: but just just a gamer. You can go into defense, offense,
- 11:34Speaker 10: space running the guy. You can tell he's just had
- 11:37Speaker 10: a lot of experience and kind of gets the game
- 11:40Speaker 10: and obviously has had a lot of success in playing
- 11:44Speaker 10: this game and especially in the postseason.
- 11:46Speaker 3: Are you the leadoff hitter?
- 11:48Speaker 5: Has Count said, you're the leadoff because when you went
- 11:50Speaker 5: to leadoff, you took off and the team took off.
- 11:52Speaker 3: So were you the leadoff hitter this year?
- 11:55Speaker 10: That's kind of wherever my mindset, you know, has alway,
- 12:00Speaker 10: he's been just wherever where wherever they want to spot me,
- 12:03Speaker 10: I'm going to try and do my best at just
- 12:05Speaker 10: given a quality at bat, and you know, just trying
- 12:08Speaker 10: to give our our team the best chance to score.
- 12:10Speaker 9: When I'm at the place.
- 12:11Speaker 3: You like hitting lead off?
- 12:13Speaker 10: I do, I do. I also like hitting other places,
- 12:17Speaker 10: I think. I think for me, I've never really hit
- 12:20Speaker 10: lead off. I hit a little bit of lead off
- 12:22Speaker 10: in college, but I never really had much experience lead off.
- 12:25Speaker 10: I think one thing that I've learned is just like
- 12:27Speaker 10: I love, you know, just having you know, just trying
- 12:30Speaker 10: to I'm really good at honing in on my at
- 12:32Speaker 10: bat and just having the at bat, no matter if
- 12:34Speaker 10: it's the first at bat, fourth at bat. But also
- 12:36Speaker 10: there's that added effect of like you kind of get
- 12:38Speaker 10: to set the tempo for the game and not always
- 12:41Speaker 10: does it go the way that you want it to,
- 12:42Speaker 10: but like it's kind of a little nuanced to my
- 12:45Speaker 10: game that I've kind of like accepted and kind of
- 12:48Speaker 10: have enjoyed.
- 12:50Speaker 6: All Right, put this argument to rest, then, because this
- 12:52Speaker 6: is a conversation in different cities, not necessarily just Chicago.
- 12:57Speaker 6: In Philly, Kyle Schwarber was leading off. You know, a game,
- 13:00Speaker 6: Kyle Schwarber does dingers and on base percentage shoe heyo,
- 13:03Speaker 6: Tani is the best player on the planet. Maybe not
- 13:06Speaker 6: the best hitter, but the best player on the planet.
- 13:08Speaker 6: He had fifty dangers back to back years. Does it
- 13:11Speaker 6: really matter you only hit leadoff once? People think it's
- 13:14Speaker 6: like this, like, whoa, he's the leadoff hitter. You're getting
- 13:17Speaker 6: up again and you're not leading off again.
- 13:22Speaker 10: Yeah, I think, you know, it's just kind of like
- 13:26Speaker 10: it's obviously a little different in the pieces that you
- 13:28Speaker 10: have for each team, but you know, again, like entering
- 13:32Speaker 10: that leadoff position for me, I told myself it was
- 13:35Speaker 10: kind of hard. But like I told myself, I was like,
- 13:37Speaker 10: I'm not going to change any anything I do at
- 13:39Speaker 10: the plate.
- 13:41Speaker 8: You know.
- 13:42Speaker 10: You know, you get a lot of talks about it,
- 13:43Speaker 10: you're gonna swing at the first pitch, or you're not
- 13:44Speaker 10: going to swing at the first pitch. I'm like, I'm
- 13:46Speaker 10: probably just gonna like feel out the game, you know,
- 13:48Speaker 10: if there's a long inning, you know, in the top
- 13:51Speaker 10: of the first Like, I think there's situations like that
- 13:54Speaker 10: where I'm not gonna swing at the first pitch. But
- 13:56Speaker 10: at the same time, like if I got a guy
- 13:57Speaker 10: that I'm ready to be aggressive, and I'm going to
- 13:59Speaker 10: continue to be aggressive ittom no matter, you know, if
- 14:01Speaker 10: it's leading off the game, it's my third at bat
- 14:03Speaker 10: in the in the sixth inning, just trying to like
- 14:05Speaker 10: have my at bat, like they put me as a
- 14:08Speaker 10: as a leadoff hitter.
- 14:09Speaker 9: Not you know, Michael Bush is a leadoff hitter.
- 14:12Speaker 10: It's like, I'm just kind of in the position and
- 14:15Speaker 10: try to have my at bat and be myself.
- 14:17Speaker 5: So when do you decide if on opening Day, if
- 14:18Speaker 5: you're in the leadoff spot, that you're gonna swing or
- 14:20Speaker 5: not swing at the first pitch?
- 14:22Speaker 3: Just like do you have a one, two, three inning boom?
- 14:25Speaker 5: The crowd's going crazy and wriglely Yeah, and you walk
- 14:28Speaker 5: up there and you're like, I'm tasting myself.
- 14:30Speaker 3: I'm feeling it. What's your walk up song?
- 14:33Speaker 5: Uh? Okay, so fifty boom hits on those speakers at Wrigley.
- 14:38Speaker 5: You're like, I'm going I'm gonna go deep first pitch
- 14:40Speaker 5: like you did in the playoffs all those times.
- 14:42Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 14:43Speaker 10: I mean again, that's the situation where it's like I
- 14:45Speaker 10: don't I don't want them to just have you know,
- 14:48Speaker 10: get me over fastball. I mean that could be the
- 14:50Speaker 10: best pitch. Rapper did it one year.
- 14:51Speaker 5: I remember Happer first pitch of the season, like the
- 14:53Speaker 5: whole season went deep in Miami, So you got some pressure.
- 14:57Speaker 9: Yeah for sure. Yeah, that was the first pitch first
- 15:00Speaker 9: the whole year.
- 15:00Speaker 10: Yeah, yeah, I mean I would Hey, you know, you
- 15:03Speaker 10: never know, but I'm definitely gonna be thinking about it.
- 15:07Speaker 1: Hey, like Michael Wile, I love while AJ is pumping
- 15:16Speaker 1: you up. I'll add on here. So, Uh, last year,
- 15:19Speaker 1: big offensive season, I think, and many others did. Got
- 15:22Speaker 1: slighted for the All Star Game. Uh, thirty four homers,
- 15:26Speaker 1: one forty seven ops plus led the team the whole deal.
- 15:29Speaker 1: Do you feel like you're a little underrated around the
- 15:31Speaker 1: league in terms of being a household name. I say
- 15:34Speaker 1: that even with the WBC when we when we were
- 15:37Speaker 1: talking about, you know, players to add to the mix.
- 15:39Speaker 1: There a lot of Cubs fans that watch our show,
- 15:41Speaker 1: where like Michael Bus should be getting more consideration and calls.
- 15:43Speaker 1: So I'm like, all right, we're starting to hear this
- 15:45Speaker 1: pretty consistently. Do you feel like the league sleeping on
- 15:48Speaker 1: you a little bit?
- 15:50Speaker 10: I think that's like that's one thing I try to
- 15:52Speaker 10: balance each and every day. I think the human part
- 15:56Speaker 10: of me always, you know, wants to you know, be
- 15:59Speaker 10: the best I can hand, and you know, just deserve
- 16:02Speaker 10: playing time, deserve certain things. But also like I'm trying
- 16:06Speaker 10: to focus on each day and you know, as much
- 16:09Speaker 10: as I think about last year and like the growth
- 16:11Speaker 10: that I felt like I made, like I got to
- 16:13Speaker 10: wipe that one clean and start this year and just
- 16:16Speaker 10: you know, try to try to keep growing and keep
- 16:19Speaker 10: continuing to get better, no matter what accolades, no matter
- 16:22Speaker 10: the individual things that come. Like just trying to get
- 16:24Speaker 10: better because ultimately, you know, we're trying to bring a
- 16:27Speaker 10: World Series back to Chicago, and you know, I don't
- 16:30Speaker 10: want to put obviously I have goals for myself, but
- 16:32Speaker 10: I don't want to put any limitations on myself. And
- 16:34Speaker 10: you know, the individual stuff, I think for all of
- 16:36Speaker 10: us players, like it's really cool to see, you know,
- 16:39Speaker 10: the All Stars that we have, the gold Glovers around
- 16:41Speaker 10: the diamond. You know, guys getting cy Young votes, Pea
- 16:45Speaker 10: getting MVP votes, Like all that stuff is like super
- 16:47Speaker 10: awesome and cool for us as collective group. But like
- 16:50Speaker 10: I think for me, just like shoving that off in
- 16:52Speaker 10: a way and just trying to grow each and every year,
- 16:56Speaker 10: no matter the individual success, no matter the accolades, that come.
- 16:59Speaker 5: But yeah, you were a Dodger originally, originally a Dodger.
- 17:04Speaker 5: Now you're with the Cubs. You saw what PCA said.
- 17:06Speaker 5: I'm sure about the the Dodger fans and you know
- 17:09Speaker 5: the Cub fans.
- 17:10Speaker 3: You know both because you played for both.
- 17:13Speaker 5: How good are the Cub fans as far as being
- 17:16Speaker 5: there for you showing up every game win or lose.
- 17:19Speaker 5: They have to play that dumb song after you guys
- 17:21Speaker 5: win every time?
- 17:22Speaker 3: What does that mean? He was a player? Like we
- 17:24Speaker 3: said that, they're.
- 17:24Speaker 5: All after you to be on the All start team,
- 17:27Speaker 5: to be on the WBC.
- 17:28Speaker 10: Yeah, I think, I mean, I kind of just got
- 17:30Speaker 10: chills thinking about it because it's in Chicago. There's there's
- 17:33Speaker 10: really no place like Grigley. And you know, the fans
- 17:36Speaker 10: from the moment that I've got here, you can just
- 17:38Speaker 10: tell that they're they're a different breed. They show up,
- 17:42Speaker 10: they understand the game, they want to win, they show
- 17:44Speaker 10: up for us. I'll never forget my first year when
- 17:49Speaker 10: showeda you know, he's in the sixth inning, he's stilling
- 17:52Speaker 10: to no hitter and he was like a eighty five pitcher,
- 17:54Speaker 10: so he was kind of up there in the sixth
- 17:56Speaker 10: and he came out for the seventh inning and he
- 17:59Speaker 10: gets like a standing ovation and you know, you don't
- 18:02Speaker 10: really see that very often. Obviously, guys don't no hitter
- 18:05Speaker 10: in the seventh inning. But like Wriggley's on their feet
- 18:08Speaker 10: understanding that he's hitch Limbit's high. He still has three
- 18:12Speaker 10: innings for a no hitter, Like they just like get
- 18:14Speaker 10: the game in a different sense.
- 18:15Speaker 3: But it's because they're all drunk.
- 18:17Speaker 5: Okay, let's let's also not forget they're all drunk by
- 18:20Speaker 5: the seventh inning. They're all drunk. Okay, so sorry, sorry Cubs.
- 18:24Speaker 5: I love you cup fans, I love.
- 18:25Speaker 3: Them, I love you guys adults.
- 18:28Speaker 10: But yeah, it's just it's great love Wrigley. And then
- 18:31Speaker 10: they to think that they could take it up a notch.
- 18:34Speaker 10: It was hard to fathom, but like being able to
- 18:37Speaker 10: experience October and them being able to take it up
- 18:40Speaker 10: a notch was like awesome.
- 18:42Speaker 9: I think it just gives us players, like, obviously you.
- 18:45Speaker 10: Want to focus on today and and and the season
- 18:47Speaker 10: and regular season and spring training whatever. February twenty fifth,
- 18:51Speaker 10: but like, man, we're we got to go to for October,
- 18:54Speaker 10: not only for us, but for the city of Chicago, while.
- 18:58Speaker 1: Aja brought up the Dodgers. One more question on that front,
- 19:01Speaker 1: Kyle Tucker goes from your squad to LA. I want
- 19:05Speaker 1: to focus on how he was for a year there.
- 19:07Speaker 1: I felt like in the off season when there's a
- 19:10Speaker 1: free agent, then everyone kind of gives their takes, slices
- 19:13Speaker 1: and dices, and one of the takes was like, oh,
- 19:16Speaker 1: he doesn't want it, or you know, he doesn't care enough.
- 19:18Speaker 1: What were your experiences like with someone like him, and
- 19:20Speaker 1: how would you explain, you know, how different someone like
- 19:23Speaker 1: him is versus say and Alex Bragman. There's different levels
- 19:27Speaker 1: of how someone expresses themselves, how they communicate, how they
- 19:29Speaker 1: act as a teammate. But curious, you got to spend
- 19:31Speaker 1: a season with him, what that was like, and how
- 19:33Speaker 1: you'd explain that to someone if they called you and said, hey,
- 19:35Speaker 1: what do you got on Tucker?
- 19:38Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 19:38Speaker 10: I think you know, Tucker was a great teammate and
- 19:41Speaker 10: he was always out there, always working hard, always playing hard,
- 19:45Speaker 10: you know, always giving a tremendous player, but like a
- 19:48Speaker 10: great teammate, he worked hard. And you know, it's hard
- 19:52Speaker 10: to say like obviously they're they're just they're two different people.
- 19:55Speaker 9: As we all are like.
- 19:56Speaker 10: We all have our own little routines, our ways to
- 19:59Speaker 10: go about our day. But I think just like very
- 20:04Speaker 10: similar in the way that they play. I think they
- 20:06Speaker 10: came up in the same organization, played on the same team,
- 20:08Speaker 10: but they play super hard. But they definitely have their different,
- 20:13Speaker 10: you know ways in doing things in the cage. And
- 20:16Speaker 10: but I don't think for any player that that's you know,
- 20:18Speaker 10: right or wrong. I think everybody kind of grows up
- 20:21Speaker 10: and figures out what works the best for them the
- 20:24Speaker 10: ability to perform and the ability to stay on the field.
- 20:27Speaker 10: And I think, you know, Bregman and Tucker do it
- 20:29Speaker 10: at a super high level.
- 20:32Speaker 6: If he had called you in the offseason and said, hey,
- 20:34Speaker 6: you know what, the Dodgers are calling me and asking
- 20:38Speaker 6: me maybe i'll sign there, what would you have told
- 20:40Speaker 6: him about the Dodgers organization that you remembered from.
- 20:44Speaker 10: Being there, if Tucker called me, Yeah, If Tucker had
- 20:49Speaker 10: called me, yeah, I think.
- 20:52Speaker 9: You know, just the people over there, you know, we're
- 20:55Speaker 9: we're great.
- 20:56Speaker 10: And I think you know, I'm a I'm an advocate
- 20:59Speaker 10: for Chicago now, but I think you know, he's He's
- 21:04Speaker 10: ultimately gonna make a decision that's best for him and
- 21:06Speaker 10: his family. But yeah, I think any team who can
- 21:12Speaker 10: add a guy like Tucker is only gonna make themselves better.
- 21:16Speaker 3: All Right, you grew up in Minnesota. Yeah, who's your
- 21:19Speaker 3: favorite player? Growing up?
- 21:20Speaker 7: The same dames?
- 21:20Speaker 3: You could say me, Okay, I was a little young.
- 21:22Speaker 3: You were a little young when you were. I was
- 21:24Speaker 3: a little young when you were.
- 21:26Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean, don't if you say Joe Mauer, I understand,
- 21:29Speaker 5: that's fair.
- 21:30Speaker 3: That's what I get it.
- 21:31Speaker 10: Joe, Joe was you know you could go more, know though,
- 21:33Speaker 10: you could go more, No, you could go more Morenau.
- 21:38Speaker 10: I think Joe Mauer was probably my favorite player growing up.
- 21:41Speaker 3: Can you grow side?
- 21:43Speaker 9: But I remember strapping him on the fake ones.
- 21:45Speaker 3: They gave out. Yes, I remember those yes yes.
- 21:48Speaker 9: Once a week.
- 21:49Speaker 10: Tory Hunter though, and Johanns Santana were guys that like
- 21:54Speaker 10: obviously people players know about them, but like man, Johanns
- 21:58Speaker 10: Santana every time he took them out.
- 22:00Speaker 9: And I remember in the backyard trying to throw.
- 22:02Speaker 10: His little circle change and you know, gripping it like
- 22:05Speaker 10: he did, making it, you know, not go that way,
- 22:07Speaker 10: but that way.
- 22:10Speaker 9: So yeah, that was a long time ago.
- 22:12Speaker 3: You're up there though, Okay, as long as I was
- 22:14Speaker 3: in the top one hundred, We're good. We're good.
- 22:16Speaker 7: Okay.
- 22:17Speaker 3: Uh, Alex call.
- 22:18Speaker 5: We had Alex call on recently the Playmaker's classic. Do
- 22:20Speaker 5: you know he had a nickname for me when he
- 22:21Speaker 5: cause he's from Minnesota. I don't know if you knew
- 22:24Speaker 5: that enough. I don't know if you guys played against you.
- 22:26Speaker 5: He's a little bit older, but close.
- 22:27Speaker 9: Yep.
- 22:28Speaker 3: He called me the hitting machine. Was it? The hitting machine?
- 22:30Speaker 4: Hit machine?
- 22:31Speaker 5: So that's the hit machines. You can see it right
- 22:33Speaker 5: on my bio. It says the hitting machine right there.
- 22:36Speaker 5: We've added that to my bio. So at least I
- 22:38Speaker 5: have one fan. When I was from with the Twins,
- 22:40Speaker 5: I mean, you.
- 22:41Speaker 9: Probably have a lot of hits.
- 22:42Speaker 5: I had a lot of hit me. You can put
- 22:44Speaker 5: it up there, yeah, keep it. But it was just
- 22:47Speaker 5: Alex calls like man. When I grew up, man, I
- 22:49Speaker 5: used to love when you come up. We called you
- 22:51Speaker 5: the hitting machine. I was like, you know what, Yeah,
- 22:54Speaker 5: that's right, a little extra confidence, you know what?
- 22:56Speaker 8: You know?
- 22:57Speaker 3: Now, next time I take you bat, I'll have that
- 22:58Speaker 3: my back pocket.
- 23:01Speaker 1: He's going to get a lot of love on the
- 23:03Speaker 1: show all year. Anything Alex call does. But but same
- 23:05Speaker 1: with you, Michael. Yeah, we appreciate you though, really fun
- 23:08Speaker 1: following your career. Thanks for joining us, sitting down with
- 23:11Speaker 1: us for a few minutes and have fun the rest
- 23:12Speaker 1: of spring.
- 23:14Speaker 9: Appreciate you guys. Yeah, you guys as well.
- 23:17Speaker 1: Thank you Shodamanaga joining us right now. And we also
- 23:20Speaker 1: have his interpreter, Edwin Stanbury hanging out with us.
- 23:23Speaker 4: Should it.
- 23:24Speaker 1: We really appreciate the time. It is great to have you.
- 23:27Speaker 1: And what's it like to have some of the new
- 23:29Speaker 1: members of the Cubs showing up over these first couple
- 23:32Speaker 1: of weeks, guys like Edward Cabrera and Alex Bregman to
- 23:37Speaker 1: help your team hopefully get to the next level this season.
- 24:02Speaker 7: Than I'm still this Yeah, I'm really looking forward to it.
- 24:09Speaker 11: I mean I watched, you know, Bragman hit, I watched
- 24:12Speaker 11: the Cabrera pitch, and you know, they're amazing players, and
- 24:15Speaker 11: I think having them on my team, I think me
- 24:17Speaker 11: and myself like I can level up as a player too,
- 24:20Speaker 11: So I'm really excited.
- 24:22Speaker 5: Does Bregman does Bregman hit good off of you? Did
- 24:25Speaker 5: Bregman hit good off of you?
- 24:26Speaker 3: Or do you know?
- 24:27Speaker 7: I think it was the must.
- 24:35Speaker 12: Done this one thing. I don't know.
- 24:43Speaker 7: I was still m Yeah.
- 24:46Speaker 11: I faced him last year and he always maintains his
- 24:48Speaker 11: like a swing never really like no matter what happens,
- 24:52Speaker 11: he always gets his best swing off and he's always
- 24:55Speaker 11: waiting for his pitch.
- 24:56Speaker 7: And so you know it was it was a tough bet.
- 24:58Speaker 3: Did he get a hit?
- 24:59Speaker 7: He threw that must?
- 25:01Speaker 5: That guy the Mama you remember, don't. I know he's
- 25:04Speaker 5: gonna say, I don't remember. He remembers, he remembers.
- 25:10Speaker 3: Nine.
- 25:18Speaker 7: He didn't get a hit.
- 25:19Speaker 11: But there are a couple of pitches that he hit
- 25:21Speaker 11: that you know, if if it moved a little bit,
- 25:24Speaker 11: you know, I would have dropped it.
- 25:25Speaker 5: He didn't get a hit, that's all the matter. He
- 25:26Speaker 5: didn't get it hit, That's all the matter. Your velocity
- 25:29Speaker 5: was up in your first spring start. Is that something
- 25:32Speaker 5: you worked on this offseason camp.
- 25:43Speaker 10: Game?
- 25:47Speaker 12: Did you even know?
- 25:59Speaker 7: Yeah? I means something I looked into an off season.
- 26:01Speaker 11: You're looking at my mechanics and making sure, Okay, what
- 26:05Speaker 11: parts of my body do I need to train, making
- 26:07Speaker 11: sure mechanics wise there's no energy loss or anything like that,
- 26:11Speaker 11: and then just maintaining that and so hopefully like in
- 26:15Speaker 11: a game situation. My vello was up and that was
- 26:17Speaker 11: a result of my goal is to maintain that.
- 26:21Speaker 6: What were some of the areas that you saw were
- 26:22Speaker 6: some energy losses? Like, what were some of the specific areas.
- 26:26Speaker 6: Was it in your legs?
- 26:27Speaker 8: Was it in your core?
- 26:28Speaker 7: Was it in your back?
- 26:39Speaker 12: I know, Joe hanshing know, just got out. So Joe
- 26:51Speaker 12: Hans k cool.
- 26:58Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 26:58Speaker 11: So it's when my right foot planted, working up that
- 27:02Speaker 11: kinetic chain, you know, to my arm, upper body and
- 27:05Speaker 11: then my fingertips. I think what I was looking at
- 27:08Speaker 11: was when it was landed. I was just using my
- 27:10Speaker 11: upper body, so just making sure once I plant my
- 27:12Speaker 11: right foot getting that energy transfer from the ground all
- 27:15Speaker 11: the way up to my fingertips.
- 27:17Speaker 4: Hey showed up.
- 27:18Speaker 1: You're you're non participating in the WBC this year.
- 27:22Speaker 7: I know, WI not this year.
- 27:30Speaker 5: Too many gold medals because they won too much. God,
- 27:33Speaker 5: they win every time he won.
- 27:34Speaker 1: Last year he pitched the title game in three I know.
- 27:37Speaker 3: He started the title game just.
- 27:42Speaker 12: Hi, come off the way I know, but se his
- 27:50Speaker 12: answer though, no, day, I don't know.
- 27:57Speaker 11: Yeah, I'm I remember that vital game just like it was.
- 27:59Speaker 11: Yes today and Team Japan and they have a lot
- 28:02Speaker 11: of phenomenal players. I think everybody watching you know they
- 28:05Speaker 11: were gonna become fans of the team.
- 28:07Speaker 3: Did he root for the U S A and the
- 28:09Speaker 3: hockey game?
- 28:10Speaker 7: I know I used to.
- 28:10Speaker 11: Okay, you know, I don't know America.
- 28:17Speaker 12: Today, so kind of America goes.
- 28:28Speaker 4: It's the way.
- 28:31Speaker 12: I don't know.
- 28:34Speaker 11: They're playing the game in the clubhouse, Uh, the U
- 28:37Speaker 11: s and Canada game, and you know, everybody was really excited.
- 28:41Speaker 7: Everybody's rooting for team USA.
- 28:43Speaker 11: And it's been like fifty some years or something like that,
- 28:47Speaker 11: uh since they won it all. So I was watching it,
- 28:50Speaker 11: and you know, I was just ruining on both teams.
- 28:54Speaker 3: US A, U S A, U s A.
- 28:58Speaker 1: Hey, he's playing neutral, all right. Let me let me
- 29:01Speaker 1: ask you about some of the other players that are
- 29:03Speaker 1: coming over here from Japan to Major League Baseball this year.
- 29:06Speaker 1: I know you've probably faced some of them. So Okamoto Murakami,
- 29:10Speaker 1: a j is a big White Sox fan, so he
- 29:12Speaker 1: wants to hear your take on this one. And then also,
- 29:15Speaker 1: am I what's your take on some of these guys?
- 29:18Speaker 1: And also were you surprised that some of them didn't
- 29:21Speaker 1: get a huge contract like our front office is underrating them.
- 29:52Speaker 11: Cut it Ko, I know k do you know how?
- 30:10Speaker 12: Oh yeah, Hugo Sagat do you major? I know Henko?
- 30:21Speaker 12: I know, I don't know, so I know Karida.
- 30:34Speaker 4: The Shi.
- 30:43Speaker 11: Hiking the next uh, because I wouldn't say, you know,
- 30:46Speaker 11: they're underrating them. I think, you know, with m l B,
- 30:50Speaker 11: there's gonna be a lot of changes that are gonna happen.
- 30:51Speaker 11: So I think there are factors of that involved. And
- 30:55Speaker 11: then regarding you know, the players, like I mean, they're
- 30:59Speaker 11: superstars in Shapain and they're fantastic players, and Murakami and Okamoto,
- 31:04Speaker 11: I mean they've hit many home runs off of me,
- 31:06Speaker 11: so I think in their contract, I mean, you know
- 31:10Speaker 11: some of the home runs and they hit off me
- 31:12Speaker 11: was that we're in there.
- 31:12Speaker 7: So you know the fact that added.
- 31:15Speaker 3: Go White Sox. By the way, go White Sox, White,
- 31:20Speaker 3: go White Sox.
- 31:21Speaker 4: Then we'll go.
- 31:25Speaker 12: A day lash.
- 31:28Speaker 11: When I faced the White Sox last year, they they
- 31:31Speaker 11: got a lot of hits off of me, So I
- 31:32Speaker 11: think this year, you know, good job.
- 31:36Speaker 5: Okay, I want to ask you this question. So I'm
- 31:37Speaker 5: gonna show you two pictures, okay, and I want you
- 31:41Speaker 5: to tell I want him to tell me who's more
- 31:42Speaker 5: famous and a bigger deal that I got a picture with?
- 31:46Speaker 13: Okay, you amazing? Who's that? Uh, mister Ichiro?
- 31:56Speaker 3: Okay?
- 31:57Speaker 5: And then what about this one, Oh, mister mister sho Tani,
- 32:06Speaker 5: Who's who's the bigger deal?
- 32:07Speaker 7: You know?
- 32:08Speaker 8: Who got.
- 32:12Speaker 7: You know who?
- 32:15Speaker 12: Mm hmm. I want you to know about saying this?
- 32:19Speaker 12: She I know it?
- 32:24Speaker 8: Uh, I mean.
- 32:41Speaker 7: They're both fantastic players.
- 32:43Speaker 11: I mean intro he came to the US a lot
- 32:46Speaker 11: earlier than a lot of the players, and you know
- 32:49Speaker 11: it's thanks to him and all the Japanese players before
- 32:52Speaker 11: him that you know, challenge took that lead to the US.
- 32:56Speaker 7: Like, that's why I'm here. So I'm very thankful for.
- 32:58Speaker 3: Could he get a hit off him? Now? At fifty? However,
- 33:01Speaker 3: old eros still get a hit off the show.
- 33:07Speaker 7: Gains it thro.
- 33:10Speaker 4: It.
- 33:11Speaker 12: But yes, all.
- 33:18Speaker 6: Right, let's talk about your contract situation from last year.
- 33:21Speaker 6: Were you surprised of how it went? Were you surprised
- 33:24Speaker 6: about how they declined their part of it but then
- 33:27Speaker 6: extended the qualifying offer.
- 33:33Speaker 7: Economy, there's an up so that eat qualifying? Well, that's.
- 33:49Speaker 12: What you know business, I don't know, but uh, your
