- 0:00Speaker 1: Back on the Yukon Women's Basketball Coaches Show, and as advertised,
- 0:04Speaker 1: the great Rebecca Lobo, former Yukon great and Hall of
- 0:07Speaker 1: Famer joining us. She did the game on ESPN last
- 0:11Speaker 1: night with Ryan Ruco and down in Knoxville, and I'll
- 0:14Speaker 1: give you a couple of quick takes for me, Rebecca
- 0:16Speaker 1: of the game. The eleven er run on the third
- 0:19Speaker 1: obviously was a big factor that turned a four point
- 0:21Speaker 1: Yukon lead to a seven point deficit. The inability to
- 0:24Speaker 1: get stops in the fourth quarter played a big role
- 0:27Speaker 1: in the game every time Yukon got closer tied. But
- 0:30Speaker 1: then the layups I think is probably the biggest thing.
- 0:33Speaker 1: But those three things, I think we start there. As
- 0:36Speaker 1: far as excuse me, the final outcome of the game.
- 0:39Speaker 2: Last night, yeah for sure. I mean what was surprising
- 0:43Speaker 2: to me was the number of layups that Yukon missed
- 0:47Speaker 2: and really good looks that they had because it's not
- 0:50Speaker 2: something that's typical for them. I think we had stand
- 0:53Speaker 2: six shots in the first half alone in the restricted
- 0:56Speaker 2: area that they just couldn't get to drop. And I
- 0:59Speaker 2: was also a little bit surprised their inefficiency from three
- 1:03Speaker 2: just because they have been shooting the ball so well recently,
- 1:06Speaker 2: shooting the ball so well since the biggest conference seasons started.
- 1:11Speaker 2: You know, going into that game, you're thinking, all right,
- 1:13Speaker 2: yukon number one priority is going to be to try
- 1:16Speaker 2: to beat the press. And they had no problem with
- 1:19Speaker 2: the press at all except for those two possessions during
- 1:22Speaker 2: Tennessee's big run. You know, they kept the ball in
- 1:25Speaker 2: the middle of the floor, they were getting good looks.
- 1:27Speaker 2: But yeah, that was the biggest takeaway for me, is
- 1:30Speaker 2: that if Yukon makes its layups and hits you know,
- 1:35Speaker 2: a percentage from three that is typical of what they've
- 1:38Speaker 2: been shooting, they win by double digits. But neither of
- 1:42Speaker 2: those things happened. Tennessee made huge plays throughout the game,
- 1:46Speaker 2: but in particular at the end, and was able to
- 1:49Speaker 2: pull it out. But yeah, layups and threes to me
- 1:52Speaker 2: were the story for Yukon.
- 1:54Speaker 1: Yeah, and they and they really had no answers for
- 1:56Speaker 1: Ze Spearman in the second half, particularly in the fourth quarter.
- 1:59Speaker 1: I mean, this is a young lady who came to
- 2:02Speaker 1: knock shill I think one career three in two years
- 2:04Speaker 1: at Miami, and suddenly she becomes a decent three point threat.
- 2:09Speaker 1: But a couple of big hoops late. I mean the
- 2:11Speaker 1: Cooper drive that put the game away, that set up
- 2:14Speaker 1: her last basket, I mean that was a dagger, but
- 2:17Speaker 1: they really didn't have any answers for her.
- 2:19Speaker 2: I mean, Tennessee made tough plays, like they were able
- 2:22Speaker 2: to drive and get two feet in the paint, but
- 2:25Speaker 2: most of the time they still had a Yukon defender
- 2:28Speaker 2: between them and the basket, and they were sort of
- 2:30Speaker 2: contorted and twisted with some of those finishes. A lot
- 2:33Speaker 2: of those were not easy shots. You force them into
- 2:38Speaker 2: tough shots, and they just time and again were able
- 2:42Speaker 2: to make them late. And I was really really impressed
- 2:46Speaker 2: with that from Tennessee. First of all, I was impressed
- 2:48Speaker 2: with the crowd. I haven't seen a crowd with that
- 2:50Speaker 2: kind of student section at Tennessee in a while, even
- 2:53Speaker 2: for some of their bigger games. It was alive and
- 2:56Speaker 2: it felt very much like it had the juice of
- 2:58Speaker 2: the rivalry in the earlier days. But yeah, I think
- 3:03Speaker 2: the players set off of that a little bit, and
- 3:06Speaker 2: especially late for them to make those plays, it's not
- 3:09Speaker 2: something that they have consistently done throughout the course of
- 3:12Speaker 2: the season.
- 3:13Speaker 1: With Rebecca Lobo from ESPN joining us here on the
- 3:16Speaker 1: Coaches Show. I think I saw this graphic maybe what
- 3:19Speaker 1: mid fourth, early fourth the substitution pattern. I mean, it
- 3:22Speaker 1: was nuts all night seeing it in person, but I
- 3:25Speaker 1: think at one point it was like what seventy five
- 3:26Speaker 1: to fifteen tennessee in that department.
- 3:29Speaker 2: Yeah, it was crazy. And you know they subbed so frequently.
- 3:33Speaker 2: I mean their first sub in the game against Yukon
- 3:37Speaker 2: and their first sub, like most of the time, is
- 3:40Speaker 2: a minute and a half into the game. And that's
- 3:41Speaker 2: what Kim Caldwell does. She says, I want my players
- 3:44Speaker 2: to play every minute like it's been last them into
- 3:46Speaker 2: the game, she said. I want them exhausted when they
- 3:49Speaker 2: come out of the game. They're not allowed to grab
- 3:51Speaker 2: their shorts, to put their hands on their knees, she said,
- 3:54Speaker 2: but I want them playing so hard that they don't
- 3:56Speaker 2: want to go longer than a two or three minute stretch.
- 4:00Speaker 2: And it's really something to behold because there's no other
- 4:04Speaker 2: power for program that does it like this, that presses
- 4:07Speaker 2: full court and does these hockey style subs like they do,
- 4:11Speaker 2: and so it's sort of fascinating to watch, fun to
- 4:14Speaker 2: watch as well, but yeah, it's it's certainly, certainly something different,
- 4:19Speaker 2: and perhaps that played into it a little bit late
- 4:21Speaker 2: when they were able to make you know, some of
- 4:24Speaker 2: those plays, and she said, you know, pressing full court,
- 4:27Speaker 2: the way they play, she said, you know, it has
- 4:29Speaker 2: a cumulative effect. Even if Ukon's not turning it over.
- 4:32Speaker 2: This is what she was telling us before the game.
- 4:34Speaker 2: Even if it's Yukon's not turning it over, maybe you know,
- 4:37Speaker 2: Page or one of the other players doesn't have the
- 4:39Speaker 2: legs they need to make a shot late, and and
- 4:43Speaker 2: certainly it's it's a unique and different and fun style
- 4:47Speaker 2: to watch.
- 4:48Speaker 1: So having said that, now, do you feel that was
- 4:50Speaker 1: a factor for Paige and a few of the other
- 4:53Speaker 1: of the Huskies, especially late last night?
- 4:56Speaker 2: You know, not necessarily, not necessarily like I don't think
- 5:00Speaker 2: and Yukon missed its layups, you know, a variety of
- 5:03Speaker 2: players missing, players missing labs in first and second half.
- 5:06Speaker 2: I don't think they missed those because they didn't have
- 5:08Speaker 2: legs under them. I don't know why they did. You know, again,
- 5:12Speaker 2: you're not accustomed to seeing that. I don't think Page
- 5:15Speaker 2: missed her pull up free throw line jumper late because
- 5:19Speaker 2: of that, because you know, she makes a major three
- 5:22Speaker 2: late in the game as well. I don't know, like
- 5:26Speaker 2: I didn't feel like Yukon on their threes. I thought
- 5:30Speaker 2: they were getting really good looks. I thought they were
- 5:32Speaker 2: getting looked similar to what we've seen them drain at,
- 5:35Speaker 2: like a sixty percent clip or something ridiculous at times
- 5:39Speaker 2: over the course of the last couple of weeks. I'm
- 5:41Speaker 2: not sure what it was, but there was there was.
- 5:46Speaker 2: There was one time I think it was in the
- 5:48Speaker 2: fourth quarter, and I mentioned this on the broadcast, where
- 5:51Speaker 2: Tennessee was pushing in transition and you kind of had
- 5:53Speaker 2: three Yukon players lagging behind, and that was the only
- 5:56Speaker 2: possession where I thought, Okay, Yukon, here looks a little
- 5:59Speaker 2: bit tight. And I think soon after that there was
- 6:01Speaker 2: a media timeout or maybe a coach's timeout, and that
- 6:05Speaker 2: was really the only time where I felt like, Okay,
- 6:06Speaker 2: it looks like fatigue might be playing a factor. All right.
- 6:09Speaker 1: Big picture for Yukon and around at least the radio station,
- 6:14Speaker 1: we talk about this is the Biggie's been a burden
- 6:17Speaker 1: on Yukon this year because outside of the Creighton game,
- 6:20Speaker 1: there really hasn't been a lot of competition for them.
- 6:23Speaker 2: I don't think it's been a burden. I don't think
- 6:24Speaker 2: it's been a burden. And I think you know, Yukon
- 6:27Speaker 2: and the coaching staff understand what they're dealing with in
- 6:30Speaker 2: terms of the Big East. And that's why you have
- 6:32Speaker 2: these February games. I mean, what other teams are playing
- 6:35Speaker 2: two road games against top opponents out of conference in February.
- 6:40Speaker 2: You know they understand this, and I think in some ways,
- 6:44Speaker 2: you know, it was good for Aubrey's. They get four
- 6:47Speaker 2: games under her belt in the Big East and coach
- 6:51Speaker 2: to kind of figure out how he's going to use
- 6:53Speaker 2: her in the minutes and acclimating her and all of
- 6:55Speaker 2: that before you get a game like this and before
- 6:58Speaker 2: you get a game like South Carolina. So where it
- 7:01Speaker 2: hurts them is they then you know, in terms of
- 7:04Speaker 2: the polls or potential NCAA seeding, they don't have a
- 7:07Speaker 2: lot of opportunities to then make up some ground. You know,
- 7:11Speaker 2: if this loss had solidified them as a two seed, Okay,
- 7:17Speaker 2: well they really have one opportunity against South Carolina to
- 7:20Speaker 2: improve seeding. You know, that's in terms of the tournament.
- 7:23Speaker 2: That to me is the only place it really hurts them,
- 7:27Speaker 2: just because they're so good about making sure, they do
- 7:30Speaker 2: have a really really strong non conference schedule, especially in
- 7:34Speaker 2: the month of February.
- 7:35Speaker 1: Yeah, every year too, and that could change next season
- 7:37Speaker 1: with the twenty games in the Big East. More with
- 7:39Speaker 1: Rebecca on the Women's Basketball Coaches Show here in a
- 7:42Speaker 1: minute on Learfield,
