Sam: Hey, welcome back to 7 Minute Books. I'm Sam, and today we're talking about Cashing Out by Julien and Kiersten Saunders. It's a book that asks a pretty uncomfortable question about why we work. Sophie, I have to ask, did this one hit a nerve for you like it did for me?
• 0:18
Sophie: It really did, Sam. Cashing Out is essentially a manifesto for reclaiming your time from a system that keeps us perpetually dissatisfied. And the Saunders argue the ultimate luxury isn't a bigger house or a faster car. It's the freedom to choose how you spend your days.
• 0:35
Sam: Yeah, and that phrase they use, being cashed out, it's not about being rich. It's about reaching a point where your passive income or side ventures cover your basic needs. So you can step away from the grind.
• 0:48
Sophie: Exactly. And the core premise is that the modern workplace has become a trap. We're conditioned to think a high salary is the ultimate measure of success. But there's a hidden cost, and it's the erosion of our autonomy, our health, and our relationships.
• 1:05
Sam: Right. And that cost is easy to miss because it happens slowly. You just get used to the low-grade stress and the constant pressure to perform.
• 1:15
Sophie: The Saunders call it trading your most valuable asset, your time, for money. And then spending that money on things you don't need to impress people you don't like. All while postponing your real desires for a future that may never come.
• 1:29
Sam: That hit me hard. It's the cycle of consumption and debt that keeps you dependent on the job. But they don't just leave you there. They say the first step is a psychological shift. They call it waking up.
• 1:42
Sophie: Yeah, and the biggest obstacle isn't a low salary. It's a mindset of scarcity and social conformity. Keeping up with the Joneses is the single greatest enemy of financial freedom. Every raise leads to a new car or a bigger mortgage.
• 1:58
Sam: So the goal is to decouple your self-worth from your spending. To find satisfaction in experiences and relationships instead of objects. That requires a deep, honest look at your own values.
• 2:10
Sophie: And a willingness to live differently from your peers. Then once you've shifted your mindset, the next phase is to aggressively optimize your financial life. But they're careful to say this isn't about deprivation. It's about intentionality.
• 2:26
Sam: Which is where the spending audit comes in. You go through every dollar and look for money leaks. The subscriptions, the convenience purchases, the social obligations that drain you without adding real value.
• 2:39
Sophie: They call it conscious spending. You prioritize the things that truly matter and ruthlessly cut everything else. That might mean a smaller home or an older car. The key is to dramatically increase your savings rate, ideally to 50 percent or more.
• 2:56
Sam: Fifty percent. That's a huge number for most people. But they frame it as building a financial buffer. That buffer isn't just security. It's the foundation for future freedom.
• 3:07
Sophie: And then comes the engine that drives the whole strategy. They call it side equity. It's a far more nuanced idea than just getting a second job.
• 3:16
Sam: Yeah, and I love this distinction. A side hustle trades time for money. Side equity builds a system that works for you. Like a rental property, a digital product, or a small online business.
• 3:30
Sophie: Right. The goal is to create multiple small streams of income that, when combined with a low cost of living, can eventually replace your salary. It's not about getting rich quick. It's about building a portfolio of cash-out vehicles.
• 3:44
Sam: And the Saunders share their own journey with that. They built a blog and a YouTube channel. They're honest that it takes patience, experimentation, and a willingness to fail.
• 3:55
Sophie: A crucial and often overlooked part is the role of your partner. The Saunders are a married couple, and they write about this with real experience. They argue the journey cannot be a solo mission.
• 4:07
Sam: Yeah, that makes so much sense. Money is already one of the most common sources of conflict in relationships. And this path can amplify those tensions if both partners aren't fully aligned.
• 4:20
Sophie: They offer practical advice on how to have difficult conversations about spending, saving, and career changes. They stress dividing labor and supporting each other's strengths. One partner might be better at investments, the other at generating side income.
• 4:36
Sam: And they also tackle race and privilege head-on. As a Black couple, they bring a unique perspective. They acknowledge the path isn't the same for everyone because of systemic inequalities and a lack of generational wealth.
• 4:51
Sophie: They don't use that as an excuse. They use it as a call to action. Be honest about your own starting point and build a plan that accounts for your specific circumstances. They also emphasize the importance of community and representation.
• 5:06
Sam: Seeing people who look like you succeed at breaking free is a powerful motivator. It makes the goal feel real. So then, once you've built that buffer and some side equity, how do you actually cash out?
• 5:19
Sophie: That's the most terrifying and exhilarating part. The Saunders describe it as a leap of faith, but a carefully calculated one. They advise against a cold-turkey resignation. Instead, they recommend a gradual transition.
• 5:34
Sam: Right. Maybe negotiate a part-time schedule or take a sabbatical to test the lifestyle. De-risk the transition. And then you have to answer the big question. What do I actually want to do with my freedom?
• 5:47
Sophie: And the answer is often not endless leisure. It's more meaningful work, deeper relationships, and greater personal growth. That leads to a major theme. The importance of earning your freedom, not just buying it.
• 6:01
Sam: Yeah, they're critical of the traditional FIRE movement. They think it's overly focused on a single magic number. The real goal isn't to stop working. It's to gain the power to choose your work.
• 6:13
Sophie: Exactly. So you develop skills that are valuable even after you leave the corporate job. You might consult, code, or start a service business. The key is that you're working because you want to, not because you have to.
• 6:27
Sam: And then there's the hidden costs of success. They're brutally honest about the burnout, the office politics, the feeling of being a cog in a machine. These costs are subtle, so we often don't realize how much they're taking from us.
• 6:41
Sophie: They share personal stories of family members who worked themselves to the bone and died shortly after retirement. It's a stark reminder that time is the one resource we cannot buy back.
• 6:52
Sam: That's the part that really stays with you. The book isn't promising a utopia. Life after cashing out has its own challenges, like boredom or loneliness. But they argue those are far better problems than the rat race.
• 7:06
Sophie: Because the ultimate reward is the ability to design a life aligned with your deepest values. It might mean more time with your kids, traveling, or pursuing a creative passion. The freedom to choose is the ultimate form of wealth.
• 7:21
Sam: So the one thing I'm taking away is that this isn't a get rich quick scheme. It's a get life back plan. It's a call to reject the default script and write your own. That's a big idea, but it starts with one small shift.
• 7:34
Sophie: And honestly, if you want to go deeper, the whole library's over on 7minutebooks.com/app. There are over 6,000 fiction and nonfiction titles you can read or listen to in any language, with infographics on many of them. It starts at $2.99 a month, $9.99 a year, or $19.99 once for lifetime access.
• 8:00
Sophie: The whole point of Cashing Out is that the freedom to choose how you spend your days is the real luxury. So we'll see you in the next one.
