Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: My name is Jake Taylor, and I'm the vocalist for
- 0:03Speaker 1: heavy music band in Hearts.
- 0:05Speaker 2: Wake, Beautiful, Lovely, to Have You. You guys released Incarnation
- 0:10Speaker 2: back in July. What inspired the concept of aligning each
- 0:13Speaker 2: song with a major Kana tarot card.
- 0:18Speaker 1: Yeah, so when I was a teenager, there were frequently
- 0:24Speaker 1: clients and strangers and then friends turning up at the door,
- 0:29Speaker 1: and they were all there to see my mom, who
- 0:31Speaker 1: was a tower reader, and so the friends would be like,
- 0:34Speaker 1: hang on a second, like you live here.
- 0:35Speaker 3: I'm like yeah, You're like, oh, I'm here with Michelle's
- 0:38Speaker 3: your mom? Like yeah, yeah.
- 0:39Speaker 1: So they start doing twer readings. So that's where Look,
- 0:44Speaker 1: that's where the seeds were planted. And our first record, Divination,
- 0:48Speaker 1: we based every song on a tarot card. It was
- 0:52Speaker 1: an eleven track albums. That was just the power number
- 0:55Speaker 1: that felt right for the album. Then there happened to
- 0:58Speaker 1: be eleven left because there's twenty two cards in a deck.
- 1:01Speaker 1: Twelve years later, it was the right time to return
- 1:04Speaker 1: to that original vision and complete it.
- 1:07Speaker 2: Yeah, that's awesome. And do you know what I just
- 1:08Speaker 2: realized like five minutes ago too, is that on this
- 1:11Speaker 2: album you have some you have the card names reversed, flipped,
- 1:16Speaker 2: and I was like why, Like I didn't didn't make sense,
- 1:18Speaker 2: And I'm like, it's because in taro you can you know,
- 1:20Speaker 2: if the cards are flipped when you put them down,
- 1:22Speaker 2: it means different things.
- 1:24Speaker 4: So it makes.
- 1:25Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, But they call it like the
- 1:29Speaker 1: term of the inverse inverse meanings.
- 1:31Speaker 3: That's it. Yeah, two sides are the same of the
- 1:33Speaker 3: same coin.
- 1:34Speaker 1: Can be in shadow or light, but really they're both
- 1:38Speaker 1: leading you towards ultimately full potential or light.
- 1:42Speaker 3: It's just about shedding the awareness in a different space.
- 1:45Speaker 4: That's it.
- 1:46Speaker 2: So does that aligning of what you know tarot cards
- 1:49Speaker 2: sort of mean or stand for? Does that also correlate
- 1:52Speaker 2: to the album albums.
- 1:54Speaker 3: Meaning the app Does it correlate to the albums mean as.
- 1:58Speaker 2: Shadow and light or like the spirituality obviously.
- 2:03Speaker 1: Well, on the second record, Incarnation, every song has flipped
- 2:06Speaker 1: upside down because it is very much in the underworld.
- 2:09Speaker 1: Every song is I don't like the way negative or positive,
- 2:13Speaker 1: but it's definitely in the shadow. Like you can hear
- 2:17Speaker 1: it sonically as well, not just for the obvious reasons
- 2:20Speaker 1: of like this letters actually close to no no clean
- 2:24Speaker 1: singing therefore less lighter, prettier stuff.
- 2:27Speaker 3: Instead, it's much heavier.
- 2:29Speaker 1: And driving, and it's really sitting in that in that
- 2:34Speaker 1: deep underworld where all the stuff settles.
- 2:37Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 2:37Speaker 2: Interesting, and is taro is something that you guys at
- 2:40Speaker 2: all practice in your daily lives.
- 2:42Speaker 3: Or not not daily.
- 2:44Speaker 1: It's something that I lean I have lent on in
- 2:47Speaker 1: times of like which way do I go.
- 2:51Speaker 3: If I've had We've.
- 2:52Speaker 1: Had reading on like the exit of a member, like
- 2:56Speaker 1: the potential exit of a member, just to see like
- 2:58Speaker 1: it was just really like in true alignment with like
- 3:04Speaker 1: with where both parties need to head because that's like
- 3:08Speaker 1: basically like yeah, like the end of a relationship is
- 3:11Speaker 1: such a big thing, or a death like that you
- 3:14Speaker 1: don't just want to go about lightly. So it's often
- 3:18Speaker 1: great to seek the tools, not for like a fortune
- 3:20Speaker 1: telling experience, but to say this is what's going on,
- 3:23Speaker 1: and then you resonate that that is what's going on,
- 3:26Speaker 1: this is what it's showing me, wow, and it becomes
- 3:28Speaker 1: a conversation around it. So they're just the tools and
- 3:30Speaker 1: mirrors that are really helpful at the right times.
- 3:33Speaker 2: Yeah, definitely, And I often think I actually just bought
- 3:36Speaker 2: a tarot card deck for the first time at Christmas
- 3:38Speaker 2: for myself, and I think it can really help maybe
- 3:42Speaker 2: clarify things in your mind possibly and see the path
- 3:45Speaker 2: that you're on. And yeah, all the things happening very Yeah,
- 3:49Speaker 2: I can't not ask about the band's reaction to being
- 3:53Speaker 2: asked to play on not Fest.
- 3:55Speaker 4: How how was that for all of you guys.
- 3:58Speaker 1: Yeah, it's a nice it's a nice recognition of where
- 4:02Speaker 1: we are at as a band. It is an iconic festival,
- 4:04Speaker 1: no doubt. I feel a little bit it doesn't feel
- 4:09Speaker 1: as let's say, like as hyper is exciting having already
- 4:15Speaker 1: toured Slipknot in Australia, meaning like like that that felt
- 4:21Speaker 1: like what I imagine getting you know, playing Not Best the
- 4:25Speaker 1: first time would feel like or the kind of thing.
- 4:28Speaker 1: So that was really special getting that kind of acknowledgment
- 4:32Speaker 1: and opportunity to open the slip Knot you know, and
- 4:36Speaker 1: those arenas with Lamb of God as well. So so yeah,
- 4:39Speaker 1: I feel a little bit like it feels like another
- 4:41Speaker 1: said not too, which is sick, But I feel less like.
- 4:44Speaker 3: Holy Ship we're playing not you know what I mean.
- 4:47Speaker 2: Yeah, you've kind of already had that in a sense.
- 4:49Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, so it's just yeah, it's great to be
- 4:52Speaker 3: part of it.
- 4:53Speaker 4: Yeah, that's awesome.
- 4:54Speaker 2: And what bands on the lineup are you looking forward to?
- 4:58Speaker 3: What bands am I looking forward to? Look at that?
- 5:03Speaker 1: Like, other than Slip Not, which is the obvious one,
- 5:06Speaker 1: it's great to see the crowd sing along to a
- 5:08Speaker 1: day to Remember. I think there's a there's a there's
- 5:10Speaker 1: a unifying kind of thing that they create, which which
- 5:13Speaker 1: would be great to see. Maybe men will be fun
- 5:15Speaker 1: sort of to prevail will just be you know, Manique
- 5:19Speaker 1: in their own way.
- 5:20Speaker 3: And I like the.
- 5:21Speaker 1: Different flavors that but there's no I wouldn't say there's
- 5:24Speaker 1: my favorite band playing, not Festy, if that makes sense.
- 5:27Speaker 1: It's just like all the different flavors are going to
- 5:30Speaker 1: be exciting to watch.
- 5:32Speaker 4: Yeah, definitely, I totally agree.
- 5:34Speaker 2: And being from Byron Bay, I'm curious what it was
- 5:37Speaker 2: like for you guys getting your start there. Were you
- 5:40Speaker 2: guys well received or did you find more success outside of.
- 5:43Speaker 1: Byron Yeah, I reckon, I reckon proving itself in Byron
- 5:48Speaker 1: Byron was about going to other places and then and
- 5:52Speaker 1: then bringing what you've learned back Because looking at Byron
- 5:57Speaker 1: Bay was just like basically most shows other than that
- 6:00Speaker 1: if you've got a big support, you know, playing playing
- 6:03Speaker 1: for bands like Terror and every time I die. There
- 6:07Speaker 1: were locals that got those spots, but it wasn't something
- 6:10Speaker 1: that we had at the time, So it was just
- 6:11Speaker 1: weird play the local shows when we're just local bands,
- 6:13Speaker 1: and it was like being at a Battle of the bands.
- 6:15Speaker 1: We're in a garage with all friends kind of thing,
- 6:17Speaker 1: and that was that was where you did practice and
- 6:20Speaker 1: get better what you do.
- 6:21Speaker 3: But it's just just fun going to the cities. I
- 6:24Speaker 3: think they get more sport for shows.
- 6:26Speaker 1: Then there's a sense of like, okay, we've got to
- 6:28Speaker 1: like step up here and you take that back and
- 6:30Speaker 1: you use Bayron you know, also as a as an incubator.
- 6:34Speaker 1: But really we honed our craft from driving a lot
- 6:39Speaker 1: just you know. Brisbane was our city, but then we'd
- 6:42Speaker 1: start going to Sydney morregularly and then we'd obviously move
- 6:45Speaker 1: one on and move to Melbourne, but really Sydney and
- 6:47Speaker 1: Brisbane we would just go nuts.
- 6:49Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, definitely. And you guys got to record Incarnation
- 6:54Speaker 2: in the US. How was that experience for you guys
- 6:56Speaker 2: and how long did that take?
- 6:59Speaker 3: We usually put aside. We usually put aside six weeks.
- 7:03Speaker 1: Yeah, sometimes if we get a seventh we will beyond
- 7:06Speaker 1: that you start to go insane. But we do that
- 7:08Speaker 1: because we don't want to be on rushing anything and
- 7:11Speaker 1: we want time to before we start recording to see
- 7:16Speaker 1: if we can write anything at the start that's new
- 7:19Speaker 1: that might supersede something we've already brought in. So look,
- 7:23Speaker 1: we've been there five five times now, I believe, or
- 7:27Speaker 1: four times, give me four times, and we've spent each
- 7:31Speaker 1: time about a month and a half. So look, that
- 7:34Speaker 1: adds up to at least six months now. And we've
- 7:37Speaker 1: got to know that that air of the world pretty
- 7:39Speaker 1: well in Michigan, and there's bands there that have hosted
- 7:42Speaker 1: us each time we've rented their cars, they've lent us instruments,
- 7:47Speaker 1: and so every time we go back it feels like
- 7:49Speaker 1: we're seeing family members and that's been really special.
- 7:52Speaker 3: Yeah, and we feel like they're at home there.
- 7:55Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 7:55Speaker 4: Oh that's awesome.
- 7:56Speaker 2: That's so good that other bands there have sort of
- 7:59Speaker 2: offered to take you in when you need it, and.
- 8:01Speaker 3: Oh my god, so much so much.
- 8:03Speaker 1: They put us on, put us on shows, playing the pubs,
- 8:06Speaker 1: like do you need somewhere to stay, We'll take you out,
- 8:09Speaker 1: take your dinner or pay for your dinner, and they
- 8:12Speaker 1: you won't.
- 8:12Speaker 3: Play from places of wealth or anything like that.
- 8:14Speaker 1: Michigan is just very like they're just very appreciative, kind
- 8:17Speaker 1: of wholesome, like hobbit like people that like really endure
- 8:21Speaker 1: the storm.
- 8:22Speaker 3: That's the difference. They get harsh winters and they know
- 8:25Speaker 3: how to survive.
- 8:26Speaker 2: Yeah. I was going to say, were you there when
- 8:28Speaker 2: it was really cold or yep?
- 8:30Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, yeah, through blizzards and all kinds of things.
- 8:33Speaker 4: It's been, yeah, insane.
- 8:36Speaker 2: If you weren't in the band, what do you think
- 8:38Speaker 2: you'd be doing.
- 8:40Speaker 3: It wasn't in the band, I think I'd be doing
- 8:43Speaker 3: what I already do outside of the band. And that's
- 8:45Speaker 3: like like I I.
- 8:49Speaker 1: Practice and help facilitate doing survival like survival skills, shelter, water, fire, food,
- 8:58Speaker 1: not in a military sense, but more and in a
- 9:01Speaker 1: connecting with nature, coming.
- 9:02Speaker 3: Back to yourself sense, like in a really like.
- 9:05Speaker 1: Yeah, less tactical, let's say, less mind oriented and more
- 9:11Speaker 1: like in a state of being the best way because
- 9:13Speaker 1: tracking just awareness, It brings out your awareness. So I'd
- 9:17Speaker 1: say kind of do on the side, and I yeah,
- 9:19Speaker 1: I like to, yeah, make make items and clothing and cutlery,
- 9:26Speaker 1: like camp cutlery and like little pieces that sort of
- 9:29Speaker 1: enhanced that experience.
- 9:30Speaker 3: That's kind of what I do.
- 9:31Speaker 2: That's really cool and really unique, and I think something
- 9:35Speaker 2: that is kind of expected from you grew up environ.
- 9:37Speaker 4: Didn't you.
- 9:39Speaker 1: Yeah yeah, yeah, Well actually from from one one to
- 9:42Speaker 1: seven I was actually down in north of Sydney in
- 9:48Speaker 1: the wild places, like in the beaches where there's national parks,
- 9:51Speaker 1: so not in the city, and then moved to Byron
- 9:53Speaker 1: Bays seven years old in the hills. So I've always
- 9:56Speaker 1: been like on the edge of just wild places.
- 9:58Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 9:59Speaker 2: Yeah, that's so awesome. And what bands have caught your
- 10:03Speaker 2: attention lately?
- 10:05Speaker 3: What bands have caught my attention lately? Pale Face Swiss,
- 10:08Speaker 3: We've brought them over.
- 10:09Speaker 1: Uh.
- 10:10Speaker 3: They're just like a lot.
- 10:11Speaker 1: Of energy and a lot of like of the now
- 10:14Speaker 1: that seems very current now, quick fast, heavy, kind of
- 10:18Speaker 1: like youthful rage.
- 10:21Speaker 3: They've they've step stood out to me at the moment era.
- 10:25Speaker 1: I've released a great record. Yeah, I can't speak to
- 10:32Speaker 1: many more new bands because I feel a little out
- 10:35Speaker 1: of touch with actually being on the touring circuit and
- 10:38Speaker 1: or festival circuit and.
- 10:39Speaker 3: Crossing like that's a cool band.
- 10:40Speaker 1: Yeah, but there's plenty of you know, old timer like
- 10:45Speaker 1: sixty Guns releasing epic new music, and there's lots of
- 10:49Speaker 1: lots of good stuff coming out from from the heavyweights.
- 10:52Speaker 4: Yeah, definitely.
- 10:52Speaker 2: And is there any music that you listened to in
- 10:54Speaker 2: your downtime that might be surprising given the music you make?
- 10:59Speaker 3: Yeah, I what do I listen to? Uh?
- 11:04Speaker 1: Well, it's maybe not surprising, but I'm high Lung are awesome,
- 11:07Speaker 1: High Long and ward droner they're from Scandinavians. Yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 11:13Speaker 1: so and high long or h G I l u
- 11:16Speaker 1: n G. But that like you can hear you can
- 11:19Speaker 1: almost hear tones of metal, Like influence of metal is
- 11:24Speaker 1: influenced by the primal stuff that they're playing of their culture,
- 11:28Speaker 1: at least from that that region, so that they're really awesome.
- 11:32Speaker 1: That's probably not that surprising. A lot of like composer
- 11:35Speaker 1: kind of stuff's great to work too, you know, scores for.
- 11:39Speaker 3: Movies, it's fantastic.
- 11:40Speaker 1: And then a lot of hip hop and rap, which
- 11:42Speaker 1: which often influences a lot of like rhythms and lyrics
- 11:46Speaker 1: I listened to.
- 11:48Speaker 2: Do you guys get wild on tour or do you
- 11:50Speaker 2: guys tend to focus and relax and recover.
- 11:54Speaker 3: Uh neither, oh neither?
- 11:58Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, like getting wild impliers like yeah, I think
- 12:03Speaker 1: the only getting while we do on tour is like
- 12:05Speaker 1: if we can get to a wild place and go
- 12:08Speaker 1: for like a big team swim or a lunch, you know,
- 12:11Speaker 1: something like that, but not partying because we know that
- 12:15Speaker 1: there's a big show the next day. As a result,
- 12:17Speaker 1: we're not recovering and relaxing. We're working pretty like, you know,
- 12:21Speaker 1: we really want to put on the best show and
- 12:23Speaker 1: that's why that's why we're there. But we're there to
- 12:26Speaker 1: do things that rejuvenate us in a sense energetically, which
- 12:30Speaker 1: I feel is the fun and games wherever we can.
- 12:34Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 12:34Speaker 2: Yeah, No, that's a nice perspective, and yeah, good to
- 12:37Speaker 2: hear that you take care of yourselves but also.
- 12:39Speaker 4: Have a bit of fun.
- 12:41Speaker 1: Totally, we just don't, at least me, I just don't
- 12:44Speaker 1: have fun. If I step into that zone, actually have
- 12:47Speaker 1: less fun, yeah, because then like the next day just
- 12:50Speaker 1: sucks And then I'm like, wait, so you know that
- 12:52Speaker 1: once upon a time things are different, but now I'm
- 12:55Speaker 1: like that to me is the real fun. He's having
- 12:58Speaker 1: barbecues and playing is to be in different games with
- 13:01Speaker 1: different bands and then gone for a swim.
- 13:04Speaker 2: Yeah, definitely, yeah, yeah, no, I can so relate. It
- 13:07Speaker 2: takes me about three days to recovery if I've had
- 13:10Speaker 2: a drinking session for one day one night. So you have,
- 13:15Speaker 2: of course toured around the world, but is there something
- 13:17Speaker 2: special about playing to an Aussie audience.
- 13:20Speaker 1: Totally yes, Yes, Australia's home and Australia gets it gets
- 13:26Speaker 1: the wild places, it gets the fun, it gets the humor,
- 13:30Speaker 1: and I really believe it gets the heavy music like
- 13:32Speaker 1: unlike no.
- 13:33Speaker 3: Other There's a relatability there that you just nowhere else. Yeah.
- 13:39Speaker 2: Yeah, the heavy artists that we have, I have to say,
- 13:43Speaker 2: like amazing. They definitely stand out. Do you have a
- 13:46Speaker 2: favorite tarot card?
- 13:51Speaker 1: I think The Magician potentially maybe, And I just just
- 13:56Speaker 1: like how the Yeah, the Magician can basically the one
- 14:00Speaker 1: hand with the heavens and one you know, one to
- 14:02Speaker 1: the earth below. And like being a conductor and transfer
- 14:07Speaker 1: of energy and a communicator of both and being able
- 14:10Speaker 1: to transform things into manifestation is quite a cool thing.
- 14:15Speaker 3: Being a foot in each world.
- 14:17Speaker 4: Yeah, I'd agree with that.
- 14:19Speaker 2: That's a good one. Across your albums lyrically, you've delved
- 14:24Speaker 2: into topics such as the environmental state of the world, spirituality,
- 14:28Speaker 2: and some social issues. Do you think these topics are
- 14:30Speaker 2: important to you because of how you grew up and
- 14:33Speaker 2: what you grew up around.
- 14:34Speaker 1: Definitely, without a doubt. Yeah, yeah, it's not reaching for
- 14:38Speaker 1: a topic. It's just like it's writing what we know
- 14:42Speaker 1: to a degree and also admitting that we don't know
- 14:45Speaker 1: it all because there's so much to not know, especially
- 14:48Speaker 1: in the social environmental thing where where as a species,
- 14:52Speaker 1: where just.
- 14:54Speaker 3: We're doing our best to adapt.
- 14:56Speaker 1: Whether you say we're devolving or evolving, that's probably more
- 14:59Speaker 1: in judgment, but the so much going on so quickly
- 15:01Speaker 1: that no one can actually say that they know other
- 15:04Speaker 1: than that they know to not know what's going on
- 15:06Speaker 1: and just do it, just simply do our best to
- 15:09Speaker 1: communicate that and to learn from each other.
- 15:13Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, definitely, And I think that's great that you
- 15:16Speaker 2: as artists are using your platform to get across that message.
- 15:19Speaker 3: That's yeah, really good totally.
- 15:21Speaker 1: And probably the only thing we do know is that
- 15:24Speaker 1: like you go to you go to your favorite holiday
- 15:28Speaker 1: destination and you go, I love that or I like that,
- 15:32Speaker 1: you know, and you resonate with that and I think
- 15:35Speaker 1: whatever that is for that person, if you can do
- 15:37Speaker 1: whatever it takes to preserve that, look after that or
- 15:41Speaker 1: to enjoy that or share with others, I think that's
- 15:44Speaker 1: like just a place of truth, Yeah, beyond the environment
- 15:47Speaker 1: or the self that I think I believe we need
- 15:50Speaker 1: more of because I same places changing from my eyes
- 15:53Speaker 1: in the last twenty years when I was a kid
- 15:55Speaker 1: that I'm returning to and I've gone, oh, I want
- 15:57Speaker 1: to be able to share this with you my children
- 15:59Speaker 1: one day.
- 16:00Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, definitely. And I think you could apply that
- 16:03Speaker 2: too to if you love a certain holiday place or
- 16:05Speaker 2: somewhere that you go. You could also apply that to
- 16:08Speaker 2: your where you are, your home hometown, I suppose. And yeah,
- 16:11Speaker 2: keep that same managing, like we need to protect and
- 16:14Speaker 2: keep things for the future.
- 16:16Speaker 3: That's it.
- 16:17Speaker 2: Yeah. Any advice for up and coming Aussie musicians looking
- 16:21Speaker 2: to be successful, like in Heartswack.
- 16:25Speaker 3: Don't do it?
- 16:26Speaker 1: No, no, no, no, that's it, that's a lie.
- 16:29Speaker 3: No, Like, yeah, look, you've got it. We need to.
- 16:35Speaker 1: I believe when we were starting out, like there was
- 16:37Speaker 1: a love. There was a love for the music. Don't
- 16:40Speaker 1: get me wrong, I was always.
- 16:41Speaker 3: There, but there was always there's also a love.
- 16:43Speaker 1: To want to be part of the community of like
- 16:46Speaker 1: bands that were hanging out going for swims, like truely
- 16:50Speaker 1: because there's all beach with beach towns, right, so we're
- 16:52Speaker 1: just it was the hanging out and there was always
- 16:55Speaker 1: an activity, and so like, find whatever it is that
- 16:59Speaker 1: is something that you can't buy, Like, it's got to
- 17:01Speaker 1: be about that first and make sure that that you
- 17:04Speaker 1: can nurture that because it can quick so quickly turn
- 17:07Speaker 1: into a numbers game and like you're only as good
- 17:11Speaker 1: as your last social network post a last song, they
- 17:14Speaker 1: start to quickly lose touch with what it actually is about.
- 17:18Speaker 1: So I really would say establish those roots really importantly
- 17:21Speaker 1: with people who also love doing that and go from there.
- 17:25Speaker 2: Yeah, so don't focus on the money straight away and
- 17:27Speaker 2: think that that's the be all and end all.

- 17:33Speaker 1: in to use that, but but yeah, again it's got
- 17:36Speaker 1: to be it's got to be around the music and
- 17:38Speaker 1: around the people first, and then it's about preserving and
- 17:41Speaker 1: nurturing that.
- 17:42Speaker 2: Yeah, good or twice he's your favorite track off any
- 17:46Speaker 2: of your albums to play.

- 18:03Speaker 1: you don't know what the hell is going to happen next.
- 18:05Speaker 1: And that's like it when we play it live. I
- 18:07Speaker 1: don't know what the crowd is going to do. I
- 18:09Speaker 1: think they're going to be stunned, shocked, get into it,
- 18:11Speaker 1: and it's just like pure permission for fury.
- 18:15Speaker 2: Yeah, Jake, thanks so much for your time today, best
- 18:18Speaker 2: of luck for not best. We can't wait to see
