- 0:07Audio recordings of the radio broadcasts of games 2, 3, and 4 of the 1937 World Series are not known to exist.
- 0:15During those games, the Yankees won games 2 and 3 to take a commanding 3-0 series lead.
- 0:20After scoring just three runs in the first three games combined, the Giants avoided the sweep by winning game 4.
- 0:26On October 10, 1937, the New York Yankees faced the New York Giants at the Polo grounds for game 5 of the 1937 World Series.
- 0:34The Yankees led the best of 7 series three games to one, and this is the NBC radio broadcast of game 5,
- 0:41featuring announcers Tom Manning, Red Barber, Warren Brown, and George Hicks.
- 0:46We wish to thank H. Sendrick and Co. for kindly relinquishing half their broadcast period in order that you may hear a description of the World Series game.
- 0:56Charles Wood speaking, smoke dreams originating in the studios of the Nation Station,
- 1:01came to you through the facilities of the Red Network of the National Broadcasting Company.
- 1:06This is station WMAQ Chicago. In 10 seconds it will be 12.45 Central Standard Time, and now for the World Series baseball game.
- 1:20We take you now to the Polo grounds.
- 1:22Good afternoon ladies and gentlemen. This is George Hicks of the NBC, speaking now from the Polo grounds in New York City.
- 1:30We're about to witness the beginning of the fifth game of the World Series between the New York Yankees and the New York Giants,
- 1:38where the series is now standing three games to one in the Yankees' favor,
- 1:43and a victory today for the Yankees, a clinching of the pennant and the championship by winning the first four out of seven.
- 1:50The biggest news this morning that we have is that the weather is wet and chilly, but it's not going to rain this afternoon, and the game is going on.
- 1:58The laughter you just heard a moment ago was for Shaq, who's down on third base now with his baseball uniform on today.
- 2:05No swimming suit today, it's too cold, but still with his tailcoat with the red lapels and his silk hat.
- 2:12And he's warming up with the remnant of the Yankee infield, the regular infield has come in now,
- 2:18and Coach Fletcher is driving balls down at Shaq at third,
- 2:23and Glenn the catcher and Shaq engage in a little hot hand as they get closer and closer to each other on the third base line.
- 2:31But to get back to the game, the weather, well, last night in New York it started raining, and it rained most of the night.
- 2:37It was raining this morning, and that steady light, but consistent way it has in late fall.
- 2:44And up till noon, we were still having rain and a heavy overcast sky and the wind coming in from the north,
- 2:49and it looked like a pretty bad day for football, let alone for a World Series game.
- 2:55But Judge Landis came up with a plan, and it wasn't until 12.30 that he made his decision and decided to have the game played.
- 3:05And it's for the benefit of course of the fans who had planned to see big league ball and World Series ball this Sunday.
- 3:12I'm very happy to say that although the crowd has been hailed off by the late decision of whether the game would be played or not,
- 3:21the grandstands are now almost half full, the bleachers are loyal of course and packed solid and have been even in the rain,
- 3:30and the sky has cleared up enough so that we feel confident there won't be rain during the game this afternoon.
- 3:37Now we've got Al Shack out in the pitchers box now, and he and Glenn the Yankee catcher are trying to decide where to put the ball.
- 3:47And he Shack threw it and it came up here on the second tier, behind home plate, where we're speaking.
- 3:53Again, this fifth game is being played at the Polo grounds on the Manhattan side of the Harlem River,
- 3:59and we can see the huge bulk of the Yankee Stadium moving up across the canal on the other side in the Bronx,
- 4:07where we move to tomorrow if the Giants win this game today and it goes to three and two.
- 4:13And again the New York Giants here at the Polo grounds are the home team, again they're dressed in their white uniforms,
- 4:19and they will field first and of course will bat last as the innings go on.
- 4:24We all know the Giants won their first game of the series yesterday by a score of seven to three,
- 4:30with Hubble pitching after they'd lost the first three games, and their cause up to then seemed almost hopeless.
- 4:37We couldn't help but notice that the team has looked a great deal peppier in batting and fielding practice this morning.
- 4:45Old Luke was out there batting them around to the infield, the boys were on their toes,
- 4:49they just pulled the top hole in off about 15 minutes ago, the infield looks very good,
- 4:54the attendants are now working on it but they still can't get shacked out of the pitcher's box.
- 4:59But I think the feeling among the many fans and the hot stove experts that we find at every office or factory or farm,
- 5:08undoubtedly is as we start the fifth game today, that even with yesterday's win,
- 5:13the odds are terrifically heavy against the Giants, especially with the Yanks as their opponents.
- 5:20And if they should and could pull this series out of the fire now,
- 5:23won their three down, well it would be the most amazing comeback in World Series history.
- 5:30The attendant finally got shacked off the pitcher's box, but no, he's going back now, he's going to argue the point.
- 5:39He's pushing aside the attendant's toes and he's going to pitch but the catcher has now left home plate.
- 5:45We see two southpaws warming up just one to each side of home plate,
- 5:52a long, lanky southern boy from Tennessee with a big blue 16 on his back, he stands six feet four inches,
- 6:02he has somewhat prominent hearing appendages, they call him ears, his name is Cliff Melts or Mountain Music,
- 6:12the freshman star of the Giants who is slated to start pitching this fifth game.
- 6:17And on the other side of the plate, warming up and watching shacked over one shoulder to be sure he doesn't get into any trouble,
- 6:24is a smaller built lad, also a southpaw, shooting his ball in very easy now to the catcher with a big 11 on the back of his gray uniform,
- 6:34Lefty Gomez, who pitched the first game of the World Series, who's never lost a game in the World Series,
- 6:40who won against Hubble eight to one in the first game of this 1937 series.
- 6:46NBC's microphone is again in their box directly behind home plate at the edge of the second tier.
- 6:53Looking out through the mesh screen, and with us are those two redheads who flash you the play inning by inning,
- 7:01Tom Manning of Cleveland, veteran baseball describer, and that soft-drawing Florida and Cincinnati lad, Red Barber of station WLW.
- 7:11Shacked is getting a nice hand now for his endeavors, and he's got the attendance of just this moment's clean home plate,
- 7:19nice and white, and Shacked comes with his spike and covers it all up again.
- 7:23And with our two redheads is the imperturbable, impartial, Phi Beta Kappa scholar of baseball, Warren Brown,
- 7:32sports editor of the Chicago Herald Examiner, who comes in between the innings to translate the action he's seen into the baseball meaning that he knows.
- 7:40Well now the diamond's empty, except for the two pitchers warming up.
- 7:44We'll hear the national anthem in a few moments, and then the teams will cut out on the field, and we'll hear the roar that starts the fifth game.
- 7:51Before that takes place, I'd like to turn you to Warren Brown, who, to give us the lineup, then he changes,
- 7:56anything that he's found out, digging around the clubhouse and the dugouts this morning.
- 8:00But first, Warren, we've been through four games up to now.
- 8:04What deductions could you make concerning the four games that we've seen played so far?
- 8:10Well, George, I want to thank you first for all those titles that you've given me.
- 8:15It seems as though each day that I come up here, you promote me a little bit higher.
- 8:19Now getting back to your question about the deductions, the one outstanding characteristic of the World Series of 1937 to date
- 8:31has been the diversity of the playing conditions, weather and track conditions, if I might use that expression.
- 8:38The first game across the Harlem River at the Yankee Stadium was played under a rather excessively hot circumstances.
- 8:47It was very muggy, sultry, and there was plenty of perspiration out on the brows of the players and on the gentleman of the radio and the press in back of us, no doubt.
- 9:00Then we ran through a couple of cold days and today, as George Hicks has told you, there was even a reasonable doubt about the possibility of a game at all
- 9:11until Judge Landis came out here a little afternoon and decided that the game must go on.
- 9:16From the point of view of the New York Yankees, the delay or the playing of the game did not make a great deal of difference
- 9:25since their pitcher Vernon Gomez, who has not started since the first game of the series, had sufficient rest for all practical purposes.
- 9:34On the other hand, the New York Giants, I have no doubt, wouldn't have welcomed the postponers
- 9:41because the postponing of the game today would have given their pitcher, Cliff Melton, an additional day's rest
- 9:47and we all remember that Melton has already appeared twice in the World Series
- 9:53in a comparatively few days.
- 9:56Looking back at the four games that have been played, it is rather interesting to note that going into this game, the fifth this afternoon,
- 10:05the New York Yankees, who were characterized going into the series as a very powerful team with more than a suspicion of good pitching,
- 10:14have also appeared in the guise of fielding marbles.
- 10:18Up until the present time, the Yankees have not made an error in the series.
- 10:23That is rather a remarkable situation.
- 10:26The Giants, on the other hand, who built their reputation in their National League race on pitching and team spirit and a sturdy defense,
- 10:35have made, well, not many errors, although they did have a wholesale production in two innings of two different games
- 10:43in which they made three errors in an inning on two occasions of the nine that are now charged against them.
- 10:49Consequently, that has been a little bit of a surprise.
- 10:52There has been a little surprise too, I think, considering the fact that the Polar Grounds, where the game is being played today,
- 10:58and the Yankee Stadium, which is the home of the American League champions, have both been productive through the regular season
- 11:05and a great many home runs.
- 11:07So far, we have seen but two home runs and the Yankees have had both of them.
- 11:12It just happened that neither one of the home runs, Tony Mazzari in the first game and Luke Erick Homer yesterday,
- 11:19have made any material difference in the ball game.
- 11:24There have been no heroic home runs, in other words.
- 11:28Nothing to win the game or nothing to bring the crowd scoring to its feet.
- 11:33Out in the direct center field, the Al Shack is leading a tearing section of the bleachers, much after the manner of a football crowd.
- 11:41And truly, this is ideal weather for a football.
- 11:45And it's quite a commentary on Shack's quick width, as he realized that and went out there in the deep center field to lead the bleachers into a chair.
- 11:54I think he's getting ready now to get them started again, so let's listen to him.
- 11:59Now that I should say is rather handily done.
- 12:10And while I dare say that the undergraduates in the center field bleacher section of the polo grounds,
- 12:18it's difficult competing with this cheering, but we must go on, the show must go on.
- 12:24I think the Shack, at such a time as he completes his splendid career as a baseball comedian,
- 12:31can certainly wind up at Yale or California or Stanford or Notre Dame, Wisconsin, Illinois,
- 12:38anyplace Duke that you may think of and take up the life's work as a cheerleader.
- 12:43I don't know of any college cheering section that was able to make so much noise and make the noise in unison
- 12:50with so little rehearsing as this crowd in the center field bleachers at the polo grounds.
- 12:55That, I believe, is a tribute to the directing genius, Al Shack.
- 12:59Now getting back to our baseball, we have heard and undoubtedly you have read in the last several days
- 13:06about the laxity of hitting on the part of the Giants.
- 13:10I was just looking here at a composite box score of the four games,
- 13:14and I noticed curiously enough that there are only four different in the hits at the present time.
- 13:21The Yankees have made 34 hits and the Giants have made 30,
- 13:27but the balance of power nevertheless has been strongly on the side of the Yankees.
- 13:33Going into today's game, which is the last at the polo grounds, regardless of what transpires here,
- 13:41the Yankees are really the favorites. They have to be regarded as the favorites.
- 13:47They've won three out of the four games in eight, but one more to gain the world's championship.
- 13:52Over the amplifying system at the present time, the announcer has been giving you the battery,
- 13:59which will be Cliff Melton and Harry Danning for the Giants and Vernon Gomez and Bill Dickey for the Yankees.
- 14:06Yesterday, Harry Danning along with Hank Lieber got into the Giants lineup for the second time,
- 14:12did most of the hitting that turned back the tide of Yankee power,
- 14:16and made it necessary to play today's game, the National Anthem.
- 14:44question mark
- 15:14Well, the baseball game is almost ready to begin.
- 15:25The Giants, the home club, are rushing out of the field.
- 15:28So I'm going to turn you over now to the very efficient services of Tom Manning to give
- 15:34you the lineup and the detail of the ball game.
- 15:36All right, Tom.
- 15:37Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen.
- 15:38Well done, Warren Brown.
- 15:39Here's the lineup.
- 15:40In the field, for the first half of the first inning, will be the National League entry
- 15:47to the Giants.
- 15:48Moore, left field.
- 15:49Martell, short.
- 15:50Harts, third base.
- 15:51Here's a change in the lineup.
- 15:52Ripple, right field.
- 15:53Batting ahead, off center fielder Lieber.
- 15:54That'll be Moore, Martell, Harts, Ripple, Lieber.
- 15:55McCarty, first base.
- 15:58Manning, catch.
- 15:59Whitehead, middle fielder.
- 16:03Martell, off, ripple, leaper.
- 16:06McCarthy, first base, tanning, catch.
- 16:10Whitehead, second.
- 16:12Ann Meltem, long, lean, left-hander in the box.
- 16:17Well, the Yanks, goes out of it short.
- 16:19Robe, DiMaggio, center.
- 16:21Geary, first.
- 16:23Nicky, catch.
- 16:24Holt, left field.
- 16:26Selkirk, right.
- 16:27Mazari, second.
- 16:29Gomez, pitch.
- 16:30The umpires behind the plate will be Ormsby.
- 16:33First base will be Barr.
- 16:35Second base, Basil, and a third base, it'll be Stewart.
- 16:38Everybody in position.
- 16:39Nick Martell has just tossed the ball to Melton.
- 16:42Umpire at Ormsby has adjusted his paraphernalia.
- 16:45Frankie Cosetti steps into the batter's box.
- 16:47And the wind-up of the ball game is on.
- 16:49The pitch, it's a long drive going deep into left field.
- 16:52Back, Joe Moore is back, under it, and he takes it.
- 16:55One away, Frankie Cosetti stepping into that first ball pitch.
- 16:58And it was a long drive to left field.
- 17:01Joe Moore was off, under, and caught for the first out.
- 17:09Frankie Cosetti had one hit out of 17 times at bat.
- 17:12Now third baseman, Red Rolf.
- 17:14Red has five bingles out of 17 times at bat.
- 17:19Here's the pitch.
- 17:21It's a strike.
- 17:22Oh.
- 17:24Lift belt, left-hander in the box.
- 17:26Standing, catching, and Rolf.
- 17:28The Yanke third baseman, left-hand batter, is at the plate.
- 17:33Inside ball.
- 17:36Ball one, and strike one.
- 17:43Rolf pumping that old fat up on town, one-on-one, coming.
- 17:46It's a base hit.
- 17:48Between third and short in the left field.
- 17:50Joe Moore retrieves the ball.
- 17:51Rolf grounds first.
- 17:52The throw is to Martell at second.
- 17:54And it's a single for Rolf.
- 17:59Joe DiMaggio coming up.
- 18:03Something wrong with Joe's bat.
- 18:05After walking clear up to the plate,
- 18:07oh, he threw the wrong bat away.
- 18:09Each of the players, you know,
- 18:09come up there with two or more bats.
- 18:13Joe tossed the wrong one over the dugout,
- 18:16and hadn't noticed it until he got clear up to the plate.
- 18:18Now he's in there, ready to go.
- 18:20It's the first inning of this fifth game of the World Series.
- 18:24Yanke batting Rolf on first, one out.
- 18:27Nelson takes the stretch, and here it is.
- 18:29It's a high fly ball, the short center field.
- 18:32Everybody's after it, everybody's after it.
- 18:34And finally, Whitehead makes a beautiful running catch,
- 18:36way out in center field.
- 18:38Whitehead taking that ball to the foot out.
- 18:40And that's the roar of the crowd, is for Whitehead.
- 18:43That looked awful bad for a moment.
- 18:46With center fielder Lieber coming in.
- 18:49Burgess Whitehead dashed out there,
- 18:51and at the last moment, he made up his mind
- 18:52to keep on going, and he grabbed that ball
- 18:54with his back to the plate.
- 18:57Larabine Lou Gehrig of Columbia coming up.
- 19:00Joe DiMaggio had five out of 17.
- 19:04Now we have Gehrig at bat.
- 19:05Gehrig has three out of 13.
- 19:08Some spectator let go of the Sunday newspaper,
- 19:11and there's plenty of paper flying out there
- 19:13in center field, and three of the groundkeepers
- 19:15are running out there, chasing foot like crazy.
- 19:17Groundkeepers are running out there, chasing foot
- 19:19like a flock of ducks when it first came out of the stands.
- 19:23Aralev retrieved the last bit of it now,
- 19:25and there's a round of applause for them.
- 19:34Boys are still running off the field.
- 19:35We were detained while they retrieved
- 19:37that blowing paper out there.
- 19:41Lou Gehrig at bat, two out, and we have Wolf on first base.
- 19:45Here's the pitch, strike, a sharp breaking curve ball
- 19:49that had Gehrig pulling away from the plate.
- 19:52It caught the inside corner,
- 19:53and Ong's being called to the strike.
- 19:58Two out, Wolf is on first.
- 20:00Here it is, outside, ball one, and strike one.
- 20:07This is the third appearance in this series of Cliff Mountain.
- 20:11Open the second game and we lead them to third.
- 20:16Ball one, strike one, play at first base.
- 20:19It's not even close.
- 20:20Ball one, and strike one.
- 20:22On Lou Gehrig, the batter.
- 20:24The Yanks are batting in the first inning.
- 20:26Again, Melton tosses over to McCarthy.
- 20:28At time, we're all standing there with his foot on the bat.
- 20:33Heavy wind blowing, another play at first.
- 20:35This one's closer, but he's safe.
- 20:37The heavy wind blowing, and that's a distinct advantage
- 20:39for the left-hand hitters.
- 20:41There's a stretch, and here it is.
- 20:43Outside, almost a wild pitch.
- 20:44Nice stuff by catcher Harry Danning.
- 20:47Ball two, and strike one.
- 20:51Danning stands there with his glove off,
- 20:53now rubbing the ball up before tossing it out there
- 20:55to Cliff Mountain.
- 21:02It's Lou Gehrig, and he's going to be the first to hit the ball.
- 21:05It's Lou Gehrig batting.
- 21:07Ball two, and strike one.
- 21:09Two out, and ball is on first base.
- 21:13A stretch.
- 21:15Coming.
- 21:17Ball three, that's a wild pitch.
- 21:18He's going down the throw.
- 21:19He's lying. He's safe.
- 21:23I believe that that will be scored as a wild pitch.
- 21:25We'll get the official decision for you in a moment.
- 21:29Let go of ball two, and strike one.
- 21:30Cliff Mountain let go with a curveball of the slow outside.
- 21:36And Roth went to second.
- 21:37Now the count is three and one.
- 21:41The official scores are still...
- 21:43Wild pitch is correct. Here we go.
- 21:46Ball four, another sweeping curveball.
- 21:49Missed the outside corner.
- 21:51With the runner on second base,
- 21:52Cliff Mountain was taking no chance
- 21:54and slamming that ball down through the middle to Gehrig
- 21:57with a count three and one.
- 21:59He threw a slow sweeping curveball that was outside.
- 22:04That brings Bill Dickey to bat.
- 22:10Bill has four hits out of 16 times at the plate.
- 22:15First base from McCartney playing way back,
- 22:17giving Gehrig a big lead.
- 22:19Here it is.
- 22:20Strike.
- 22:21Goal.
- 22:24Sharp breaking curveball with Melton Heather in there
- 22:26over the inside corner to Bill Dickey, a left-hand batter.
- 22:30Roth is on second.
- 22:31Gehrig is on first.
- 22:32It's the first inning.
- 22:33No score.
- 22:34Two men out.
- 22:37Outside.
- 22:40Ball one and strike one.
- 22:49Let Roth is on second.
- 22:51Gehrig on first.
- 22:52Two out.
- 22:53Ball one, strike one.
- 22:54Pitch.
- 22:56It's a top ball down first.
- 22:57It's ball and strike two.
- 23:00Earl Colman's coaching at first base retrieves that ball.
- 23:07That diamond is well soaked.
- 23:11The only thoroughly dry spot on the diamond there
- 23:13is the pitching rubber and the spot around home plate.
- 23:18Strike two and ball one.
- 23:19Ready to go again.
- 23:20Two out.
- 23:21Ball on second.
- 23:22Gehrig on first.
- 23:23Melton takes a stretch.
- 23:25Strike two and ball one.
- 23:27Inside.
- 23:28Ball two.
- 23:31Flip.
- 23:32Early aim.
- 23:33That ball over the inside to Bill Dickey.
- 23:36Once again, Harry Tanning has his big mitt off standing there
- 23:38rubbing the ball with his bare hands before tossing it out to Melton.
- 23:42Dickey steps out of the batter's box.
- 23:44It's ball two and strike two.
- 23:48Two men out.
- 23:50Two men out.
- 23:51A block of twos.
- 23:52Alright, it's two and two.
- 23:53Coming.
- 23:55Strike three.
- 23:56All.
- 23:57Stop breaking third ball and so is Dickey.
- 23:59Please, it was a strike.
- 24:01Just ducked his head and ran for the Yankee dugout.
- 24:03So that's all for the Yanks for the first inning.
- 24:05No runs, one hit, one base on balls and no errors.
- 24:08Warren.
- 24:09Melton certainly worked himself out of a rather difficult position there in this inning,
- 24:15especially pitching to Bill Dickey who was one of the more powerful hitters
- 24:19in this New York Yankee lineup.
- 24:21I noticed that in the first inning, Melton was throwing more curves, I think, than fastballs.
- 24:26He threw curves almost exclusively to Garrick when he walked him
- 24:30and that was about all that Dickey had, save one fastball that came in around his ankles.
- 24:35That last curve was a beautiful thing, breaking sharply over the plate and it fooled Dickey completely.
- 24:41Melton certainly has started out his first inning while he was in a little trouble
- 24:45with no sign that the three appearances which he's been forced to make in this 1937 World Series
- 24:53have cramped his style in the Yankees.
- 24:55He began with a rush and now we'll have a look at Gomez making his second appearance in the World Series.
- 25:03Gomez was very effective his first time out over in the Yankee Stadium
- 25:07and since he is tremendously fast, one of the swiftest pitchers in the American League,
- 25:13the Scott Day, which is supposed to be ideal for fast pitching,
- 25:17ought to be right down Gomez's alley, much as it is down Melton's.
- 25:22The first giant batter is about out of the plate, Tom, so I guess you can take charge again.
- 25:28No score is yet, we're going into the last half of the first inning and Joe Moore,
- 25:32left fielder of the Giants, will hit first.
- 25:35Joe gets a nice round of applause from the fans here, I believe about 35,000 in the four of rounds.
- 25:41Gomez winding up the pitch.
- 25:43It's a base hit on the left field, a base hit.
- 25:46Out come of the ball momentarily, picks it up, returns it to Lazzari and it's a single for Joe Moore.
- 26:01Going to Lazzari, had the ball, now he's walking clear into the pitching rubber,
- 26:05rubbing it up before handing it to Gomez.
- 26:07That was a line drive, it shortstopped Frankie Cosetti, leap far to his right, Moore,
- 26:12locked listed by several feet.
- 26:14Moore went bounding out the left field with a free-five hole.
- 26:17All right, we have six Bartell up in the strike one, swinging.
- 26:21Bartell has a right hand batter.
- 26:24Moore had six hits out of 18 Giants at bat and Bartell has four out of 17.
- 26:28Gomez takes a stretch and here it is, the high fly ball to left field.
- 26:33Hogue gets under it, running in, still coming in, makes the catches out.
- 26:40Ball was hit pretty hard, there's a wind blowing in from left field.
- 26:46Hogue started to slow up for that catch, then had to hurry a little bit to catch up with.
- 26:52We still have Moore on first, one man out and now on.
- 26:56Left hand batter and third baseman coming up.
- 26:58Now has three hits out of 17 times at bat.
- 27:03Strike one, took a healthy cut from way back at that ball.
- 27:09We have no scores yet, we're playing the last half of the first inning.
- 27:12The Giants batting one out and Moore is on first base.
- 27:17Inside, ball one and strike one.
- 27:23Jimmy Gomez pitching for the Yankees and Bill Dickey behind the bat.
- 27:31Gomez, ready, there it is, foul up and back.
- 27:39Up and back of home plate, a bit of a scramble going on for it,
- 27:42it makes the count on Melott, strike two and ball one.
- 27:46We have right fielder Jimmy Ripple coming up next.
- 27:51How fast Gomez is pitching.
- 27:54Like we know, going for a bad ball high on the outside.
- 28:02That was really a bad ball high on the outside.
- 28:04Mel started a swing, couldn't hold, collared through and looked just a little bad on that strike out.
- 28:10Two gone, Jimmy Ripple coming up.
- 28:14Here's three hits out of 13 trips to the plate.
- 28:18Another base hit in the right center field, Moore rounding second.
- 28:22DiMaggio has the ball, the throw is cut off by Frankie Cosetti.
- 28:26And it bounds away from Cosetti over to the pitcher's box where Rolfe passes on it.
- 28:30Ripple stopping it first, Moore on third base, Ripple on first and Lieber coming up.
- 28:41Both of those Giants hits were ringing line drives, one by Moore over Cosetti's head,
- 28:47Ripple over Rosetti's head.
- 28:53DiMaggio came up with that ball and cut loose a bit quick, but Rosetti running heads up,
- 28:58seeing that there was no chance of getting Moore at third base, cut that ball off,
- 29:02so as to prevent Ripple from going to second and be in a scoring position.
- 29:07Hank Lieber, you know, has a right hand batter, he has two hits out of seven times up.
- 29:11Two very important hits there were, too, the stretch and the pitch outside, ball one.
- 29:19Letty Gomez in the box for the Yanks.
- 29:24Outfield is a play, plenty deep.
- 29:26Here it is.
- 29:27Strike, he swings wide and misses.
- 29:29Ball one and strike one.
- 29:36Hank Lieber has stepped out of the practice box for a moment.
- 29:40Tense moments indeed.
- 29:41Two out runners on first and third, one and one coming.
- 29:44Ball two, that ball was over but just a little bit high.
- 29:48Ball two and strike one.
- 29:52Merle Hogan playing way out there, the 400 foot sign.
- 29:55DiMaggio has moved out, too.
- 29:56They're playing direct position, though, left, center and right.
- 29:59All right, ball two and strike one.
- 30:01The high infield fly near first base.
- 30:05On the line is Gehrig waiting and Gehrig takes it.
- 30:08That's all for the Giants in the first inning.
- 30:09No runs, two hits at, no errors.
- 30:11One.
- 30:12The thing worth commenting on in that inning is the change of tactics on the part of the New York Giants.
- 30:20Rather, it is a return to the tactics that they used while they were in their regular play in the National League season.
- 30:27Joe Moore, their leadoff man, has established a record down through the years of liking to take a whack at that first ball.
- 30:34We've been watching him all through this series and Joe has been letting the first ball go by more often than not.
- 30:40Today, perhaps Gomez thought he was going right on, too, with that and came in there with it when Moore got his base hit.
- 30:47The other mark change is their lack of respect today, or at least in this first inning, for the throwing arms of the Yankee outfielders.
- 30:57You may have remembered from listening to the broadcast of the other games that the Giants fell in third to take that extra base.
- 31:03Today, Moore kept right on going in spite of the fact that the ball was hit at the night deal.
- 31:08We're supposed to have the best throwing arm in the Major League.
- 31:10It's all right, Tom, the ready goes.
- 31:12Merle holds the first hitter, right hand batter, the wind up and the pitch.
- 31:16All one.
- 31:17Fast ball outside.
- 31:19Merle has five hits out of 16 times at bat.
- 31:24No score as yet.
- 31:25First man up for the Yankees in the second inning.
- 31:28Here it is.
- 31:30Inside on a ball, too.
- 31:33Keeping her ball and Merle holds right hand batter, watched all the way and then stepped away from it as it was too close and inside.
- 31:41Ball to the count.
- 31:44Strike.
- 31:46Fast ball right down the alley.
- 31:48Flip Melton, throws a string on that one.
- 31:49Ball two and strike one.
- 31:56There it comes.
- 31:57There's a long drive going deep in the right field.
- 32:00High up in the right field, making for a home run.
- 32:04A home run by Merle holds the left field of the Yankees.
- 32:18At ball by Merle Ho, the right hand hitter, the count ball two and strike one was in the upper deck well over in right field.
- 32:26The ball was rolling, perhaps about 450 feet.
- 32:33One to nothing in favor of the Yanks.
- 32:35Selkirk, right fielder left hand batter is up.
- 32:39Ball run.
- 32:40Fast ball at Max Selkirk, away from the plate.
- 32:49At the top of the second inning, the score of one to nothing in favor of the America League entry, the result of that mighty home run by Merle Ho.
- 32:58Flip Melton, southpaw.
- 33:00Pitching.
- 33:01Ball one to count.
- 33:03Ball two.
- 33:05And a fast ball inside.
- 33:07And the count is two and nothing.
- 33:13Tony Lozori hanging around, heel back next.
- 33:16Ball two.
- 33:18Strike.
- 33:20Fast ball right down the middle and fell high on the count on George Selkirk.
- 33:23Ball two and strike one.
- 33:25George steps away from the plate, wipes his hands on his trousers.
- 33:28Back in there ready to go.
- 33:30Ball two and strike one.
- 33:33Bounding ball down, fourth second.
- 33:35Right head comes up with it to Cole.
- 33:36He's out.
- 33:37Right head to Pataki.
- 33:39George Selkirk rounding out, one gone, nobody on.
- 33:42Tony Lozori.
- 33:48Tony has five hits out of 12 times at bat.
- 33:50Getting a nice round of applause.
- 33:54George Selkirk has four hits out of 15 times at bat.
- 33:58Tony Lozori.
- 33:59Strike.
- 34:00Fast ball just above the knees, over the outside corner.
- 34:06First half of the second inning.
- 34:09Power ball.
- 34:12Line drive into the right field corner.
- 34:18That's strike two on Lozori.
- 34:22Low line smash that had the spectators scattering.
- 34:27Here it comes.
- 34:29Ball up and back.
- 34:31Hits the screen right in front of the microphone here.
- 34:38Score is one to nothing in favor of the New York Yankees.
- 34:42First half of the second inning, one man out.
- 34:44Nobody on.
- 34:45Lozori at bat with strike two.
- 34:47The wind up.
- 34:49Strike three, Cole.
- 34:51It's a beautiful curve ball.
- 34:52Tony Lozori knew it.
- 34:55That's bowed his head as much as to say absolutely correct and walked away.
- 35:00Both of those strikeouts, Dickey and Lozori, no question in the mind of the batter.
- 35:06They were very definite in their own minds that it was a third strike.
- 35:11Now they have Gomez coming up.
- 35:13Two off, nobody on.
- 35:17Lefty bats and throws, left-handed.
- 35:24Two off, nobody on, and here we go.
- 35:27Ball one.
- 35:29Sweeping curve ball.
- 35:32Lefty Gomez started a swing at that.
- 35:35Harry Danning turned around, claiming that it was a strike.
- 35:38Long as he said nay.
- 35:43Here we go.
- 35:46Cole strike one.
- 35:47Ball one in, strike one.
- 35:50Curve ball inside, Gomez swinging hard, tap the ball.
- 35:56First half of the second inning.
- 35:58One to nothing in favor of the Yankees.
- 35:59Two off, nobody on.
- 36:02Strike two, the curve.
- 36:06Ball.
- 36:14It's a mix-up on the decision on those balls and strikes there.
- 36:16He called that first one a ball, but they have strike two and ball one on the board.
- 36:22Now it's a tip ball, so it doesn't make any difference now.
- 36:25That first pitch that Danning claimed might have been a strike,
- 36:28long as he held up his left hand, which means that it was a ball.
- 36:31Makes no difference if strike two and ball one.
- 36:39Here it comes.
- 36:42Strike three, Cole.
- 36:44Nice shot, breaking curve ball at Gomez.
- 36:46Around to class five, and it's no, one run, one hit, and no errors for the Yankees in the second one.
- 36:52And the home run that we talked about in advance of the game has finally made its appearance
- 36:57in the World Series at a point where it really means something.
- 37:01Marl Hoaks line shot over there into the upper deck of the right field stand.
- 37:06Starting the Yankees off, one run to the good is the first home run of the three made in the series
- 37:13that had material effect upon the game.
- 37:17At the present time, except for that home run, Melton seems to be pitching very well out there.
- 37:23He has his control back. He doesn't even seem to be as unsteady as he was in the first inning.
- 37:28Against the right-hand hitters, it looks to me as though he's been pitching outside to them,
- 37:32particularly to Hoak to keep him from pulling in the left.
- 37:35But the California boy simply stuck out his bat and poked the ball into the right field stand.
- 37:42He's got his home run over there, so I guess it doesn't make much difference.
- 37:46If they're going to hit him, they're going to hit him, whether you pitch inside or outside.
- 37:50The Giants coming up for their turn, and it's your turn, Tom.
- 37:54It'll be Johnny McCarthy, the Giant first baseman leading off in the last half of the second.
- 37:59McCarthy, Danning, and Whitehead coming up.
- 38:03The late tuners in again, let Yankee outfielders Hoag left, DiMaggio center, Selkirk in right.
- 38:09Kerrigan first, Lozari second, Rosetti short, ball third, and the battery is Lufty Gomez and Bill Dick.
- 38:16On firearms behind the plate calls play ball, and here we go.
- 38:20A far back, strike one.
- 38:24Johnny McCarthy is a tall Yankee boy.
- 38:28Bats and throws left-handed.
- 38:32Mack has had four hits out of 15 times of bat.
- 38:35A bounding ball down between first and second, Lozari has it to throw to Kerrigan.
- 38:39He's out.
- 38:43Run away, nobody on.
- 38:45Harry Danning coming up.
- 38:49Harry Danning having replaced Gus Mancuso. Gus was injured.
- 38:52Little finger of his right hand.
- 38:56Danning making a very acceptable substitute.
- 39:02Right hand bat of the first pitch, outside, ball one.
- 39:07Last half of the second inning, the score one to nothing in favor of the Yankees.
- 39:11The Giants have bat one out, nobody on, Danning heading, and it's ball one.
- 39:16Oh, oh.
- 39:18Hard smash down, right field, curving into the stands, it's ball one and strike one.
- 39:30Here comes strike two.
- 39:33Danning went off his bat on that one.
- 39:35Split second too late.
- 39:41Wouldn't be surprised if it's pretty tough to see that ball out there.
- 39:44Gomez, speedball pitcher, and it's awful dark here in New York.
- 39:48Strike three, out of the ball, fell higher, about a hop on it for the third strike.
- 39:56That's the second strike out for Gomez.
- 40:00Melvin Hart from Harry Danning.
- 40:03Perch is right-hit coming up.
- 40:05Perch has three hits out of 12 times at bat.
- 40:09Right hand hitter.
- 40:12Giant half of the second, two out, nobody on.
- 40:17High fly ball, right field, looks like a Texas League hit, it is.
- 40:21Texas League hit, right hand is fouled at first and he's going to second.
- 40:24There's the throw, he's safe, a two-bagger.
- 40:28That was a high pop, fly down of right field.
- 40:31Gary goes off on the crack of the bat.
- 40:33Selkirk also, both of them came over there and neither Gary or Selkirk got within 20 feet of that ball.
- 40:39It was finally retrieved by Selkirk, looked into the infield, and it's a two-base hit for Whitehead.
- 40:46They have the pitcher Cliff Melvin coming up.
- 40:48This being a full day, going to take the pitchers quite some time to get up to the plate
- 40:54because they're wrapped in their heavy sweater and a big blanket at the completion of each inning.
- 41:02Bill Dickey, Gomez, and up by Ormansby, all standing halfway between the plate and the box,
- 41:07discussing something and Ormansby is looking at the ball.
- 41:10Everything's okay, they're going back to their positions now.
- 41:13Gomez has his glove off, rubbing that ball up.
- 41:15Thompson steps in the box, we're ready to go.
- 41:20Ball one, stripping curve ball is high and outside.
- 41:25It's the giant half of the second inning.
- 41:27Two outs. Whitehead on second.
- 41:32Strike.
- 41:34Took a mighty cut at that one, it was ball one and strike one.
- 41:42One and one, the pitcher batting.
- 41:44Strike two, he swings hard again.
- 41:53It's lefty Gomez, he's got a lot of speed out there this afternoon.
- 41:57Every afternoon too.
- 41:59Ball is too high, a change of pace offering.
- 42:02Try to pull Cliff Melvin with that one if it's strike two and ball two.
- 42:09Two and two.
- 42:11Strike three, he's out.
- 42:14Whitehead on second base, Gomez, man, Melvin.
- 42:17This game is always coming to you from the holograms of New York City,
- 42:20the fifth game of the World Series between the Giants and the Yankees.
- 42:24It's being sent to you over the combined red and blue network of the National Broadcasting Company.
- 42:29We pause now for station identification.
- 42:33This is station WMAQ Chicago.
- 42:37Looking at the holograms and the NBC booth in the upper deck,
- 42:41watching the progress of the game between the New York Yankees and the New York Giants.
- 42:48The Yankees at the present time are leading by one to nothing
- 42:51because of a home run delivered in the second inning by Merrill Hoag, their lefty.
- 42:56Both lefty Gomez and Cliff Melvin, the pitchers, are progressing very favorably.
- 43:02At the present time there is no criticism to make of their pitching.
- 43:06The Yankees are at bat now and Tom Manning.
- 43:09First half of the third inning, the top again, Frankie Grossetti.
- 43:12Strike one, he cuts off the first ball pitch.
- 43:15Last time up, he might fly into left field.
- 43:19Also, that time was bad, he hit the first ball pitch.
- 43:24Strike one, inside and it's ball one.
- 43:27Ball one and strike one.
- 43:32Cliff Melvin pitching, here we go.
- 43:34Ball one, that ball was over the plate, but too low.
- 43:41Last time up, Bill Zicke struck out.
- 43:46Here it is.
- 43:48A high foul at the back of the plate, Danning coming back.
- 43:51He's under it, he ought to get it, he does.
- 43:55Bill Zicke calling out to catcher Danning.
- 44:00Now the home run hitter, Marl Hobe coming up.
- 44:04Marl's right hand battered.
- 44:10Last time up, of course, he had his home run giving him six hits out of 17 times at bat.
- 44:16Malcolm's first delivery, inside, ball one.
- 44:21First half of the fourth inning, the Yankees are batting.
- 44:25Score two and two, one man out, nobody on.
- 44:28Ball one on the hitter.
- 44:30There it goes, it's a long drive to left, but this time Moore is over near the wall and makes the catch.
- 44:39Moore was hit in a good spot, ordinarily a base hit, but this time Joe Moore was playing over there,
- 44:43close to that 360 foot sign there and ran over against the billboard to make the catch.
- 44:51George Iselkirk and Pat, last time up George bounded out, right hand to McCarty.
- 44:58Four hits out of 16 trips to the plate.
- 45:02Ball one.
- 45:05Change of pace curve ball, sort of a sweeping thing that came at the batter and then flushed inside, but not quite enough, and it's ball one.
- 45:16Strike, beautiful fast ball right down the alley and felt high.
- 45:23Ball one and strike one.
- 45:27Two out, nobody on.
- 45:30High foul ball between third and home, I believe Danning will take it out, as in there Danning takes it.
- 45:36That's all for the Yankees, that was quick, no runs, no hits and no errors.
- 45:40Tom I suppose you've noticed in that inning that Melton seemed to be faster than he was at any time in the ball game.
- 45:48Those three hitters, one after the other, all failed to get their backs around as the saying is.
- 45:54Ball was past them before they got a good cut out of them and the result were those up flies, two of them to the catcher and a sort of a soggy one.
- 46:04Really I think Hogue hit that ball on the handle that went out in the left field.
- 46:08That is a good indication that Melton is still a very strong pitcher and I think this is really a remarkable thing on his part because after all three appearances in five games there's a lot of work from a pitcher.
- 46:22On the other hand, up to the present time the Giants seem to be hitting Gomez I'd say steadily, certainly more steadily than they did when they first faced him over at the Yankee Stadium in what now seems like the long ago.
- 46:37Indeed it does and we're going into the last half of the fourth inning that score is all tied up two and two.
- 46:43We have McCarthy, Johnny McCarthy leading off, Harry Danning, second and white hit third. Gomez, the first pitch, strike call.
- 46:51Shock breaking curve ball that Johnny pulled away from and broke over the heart of the plate for a called strike.
- 46:59Here it is. Ball outside, it's one and one.
- 47:04Last half of the fourth inning. Johnny McCarthy leading off for the Giants.
- 47:14Strike two. Johnny waved at that one. Last curve ball over the outside corner and it's strike two and ball one.
- 47:27Strike three. He waved at that one. Took a very beautiful cut at it however, didn't miss it by very much.
- 47:39That's the third strikeout of the afternoon for Gomez.
- 47:47Score the Yanks two, the Giants two, last half of the fourth inning one out. Danning up, hits the first ball, it's a foul over the boxes in fact the first base.
- 47:56Strike one.
- 48:03That's the Gomez taking his time before the next delivery to Harry Danning. Now we're ready. It's strike one you know.
- 48:10Ball inside. Ball one and strike one. One man out.
- 48:19Danning up. Ball outside. Ball two and strike one.
- 48:26Snyder and Luke doing the coaching for the Giants as usual.
- 48:31That's the Gomez pitching. Ball two, strike one. Strike two.
- 48:37The roar from that dog was from the fact that Harry Danning was fooled on that pitch and looked awful bad swinging it.
- 48:43He swung late then swung at least a yard over that ball.
- 48:49That is sometimes caused because the batter's trying to outguess the pitcher.
- 48:54Power ball in the box is over in back of first.
- 48:59Ball one and strike two.
- 49:04The appearance of that swing Harry was expecting a sharp breaking curve ball instead of that. Gomez struck it over the outside corner.
- 49:11Ball five. Two and two.
- 49:13Hit ball back. It remains two and two.
- 49:19The count is two and two. The score is Giants two, the Yankees two and we're in the last half of the fourth inning and we have one man out and nobody on.
- 49:30Harry Danning twisted himself a little bit and swinging at that ball.
- 49:35He's standing out of the batter's box.
- 49:38He's ready to go again. Two and two.
- 49:42It's a long drive going off the right field but it's fouled by only a foot.
- 49:47Danning was all the way down to first base. That ball hit the top of the scoreboard in the right field corner.
- 49:52That was up over the 294 foot side.
- 49:56It was a ringing line drive. Everybody jumped to their feet expecting the ball to drop over the top of the parry or out there for another home run.
- 50:03But it hit only inches from the top and only about one foot foul.
- 50:08Harry's taking a lot of time coming back from first base.
- 50:12Ball was hit like a shot out of a cannon.
- 50:18When we go again it'll be ball two, strike two, one out and nobody on. Here we go.
- 50:23That's a line smash over in the boxes in fact with third base. It's a foul.
- 50:29Everybody over there trying to catch that ball out there.
- 50:34Harry's got his eye on the ball. It's two and two.
- 50:41Gomez winding up. There we go.
- 50:44High foul ball coming back. Vicki coming back fast.
- 50:49He has it.
- 50:51That was so close to the stands here that we had to wait for the roar of the car that time.
- 50:54We couldn't see it so we have two out, nobody on and gorgeous whitehead coming up.
- 51:00Two men out.
- 51:03Whitehead coming up. Last time up whitehead had a double.
- 51:09Last half of the fourth inning, Giants batting. It scores two and two.
- 51:14We have two men out, nobody on.
- 51:18Ball one. That ball was over the plate, a little bit too low.
- 51:22It may be getting just a little darker now than it was at the start of the game.
- 51:27That wind is drawn cold.
- 51:31Ball two.
- 51:36Whitehead started a swing at that and this time he was able to hold the swing back.
- 51:40That's the first time in the series as we remember that the boys started a swing and were able to hold it.
- 51:44That's a shot to right for this foul.
- 51:54That one of the ground keepers out there comes up with a little Charleston after that one.
- 51:59Shivering from getting out of its way.
- 52:01The ground keeper is a sitting lad out there close to the foul line in the right field corner.
- 52:05It's ball two and strike one. Ready?
- 52:08The ball strikes the right field right at Georgie Shulker and he takes it so high. A line drive that he never moved for.
- 52:14That's all for the Giants for the fourth inning.
- 52:17No runs, no hits and no errors. Mr. Brook.
- 52:21And because Tom there was no runs, no hits, no errors and nobody on base, obviously it was the pitchers' inning rather than the hitters.
- 52:31I have no doubt that the darkness of the afternoon had some effect on the swinging I think.
- 52:37Some of the boys that have been batting down here have taken almighty cut sets.
- 52:42Pitchers that ordinarily they must let go by.
- 52:45Some of them they've missed by several feet.
- 52:47Some of them have been bad pitchers.
- 52:50And it's really dark and at the present time there is a little sprinkle of rain starting to come down,
- 52:56which I daresay will add to the confusion in a very short order.
- 53:01The Yankees are coming to bat again against Cliff Melton of the Giants.
- 53:06Tom, I guess maybe you better come in out of the rain and go to work.
- 53:10What do you mean come in out of the rain?
- 53:14Our microphone is right out here in the open at the Polar Gowns over at the Yanke Stadium.
- 53:20It's undercover but over here it's right out in the open so you'll hear the pitter-patter of the rain hitting the entire family.
- 53:25Oh my, can we get going?
- 53:27Do you get your fireman's hat?
- 53:31Well, we can take it. Ready to go. First half of the fifth. It's two and two.
- 53:34And push him up. Tony Lozali is at bat.
- 53:40Last time up, Tony struck out. Scrawled out on a ball and knocked him head over the outside corner.
- 53:47Inside. Ball. Ball one and strike one.
- 53:56First half of the fifth inning. Lozali the first batter up.
- 54:01There's a high five ball going deep. Going out, out. Leiber going straight.
- 54:06He doesn't make the catch. Lozali is round at first. Lozali is round at second.
- 54:11There's a relay. Right hook goes out and Lozali stops at third base.
- 54:15A mighty triple from four hundred and sixty feet from home plate.
- 54:20To the crack of that bat. Triple.
- 54:22Leiber the center fielder. Set sail for the ball. But, triple.
- 54:28Neither one of them can catch up with it. And it landed out there just about one yard from the barrier in left field.
- 54:35That's about four hundred and fifty feet from home plate.
- 54:39Ball was really hit.
- 54:42You've really got to hit them to get them over that barrier.
- 54:45And that's about twelve feet high after you get to the furthest extent of the line between home plate and center fielder.
- 54:55Lozali is on third base. We have Gomez coming up.
- 55:01That is the fourth Yankee hit of the afternoon.
- 55:05The fifth one was taking a lot of time before tossing that first ball up to lefty Gomez.
- 55:11In field. They're going to move in of course.
- 55:14Trying to cut that run off Lozali.
- 55:17Lozali is on third base. Nobody out but score is five, two and two.
- 55:20Here we go.
- 55:22The line is tired and the base hit.
- 55:25The coaches white hit got a drop hand on that ball but it was hit like lightning.
- 55:28And it's a base hit in the center field. And Lozali scores from third base.
- 55:33The Yankees of the American League three and the Giants of the Master League two.
- 55:38The result of Lozali's triple and with the infield drawn in.
- 55:42Lefty Gomez swung hard and hit a lightning smash.
- 55:45That second baseman white hit just barely got his drop hand on and batted it out into center field.
- 55:51It hit so hard that if it had been right at him it probably would have knocked him down.
- 55:56First half of the fifth inning nobody out. Gomez is on first.
- 55:59And what you laid for a moment while lefty Gomez the Yankees catcher gets his sweater on.
- 56:03He's got it on now and all buttons up and we're ready to go.
- 56:06Up comes the top again. Frankie Crozzetti. No hits out of two times at bat.
- 56:11One hit out of 19 times at bat in series.
- 56:14It's a strike call.
- 56:16Fast ball right down the alley.
- 56:19First time up Frankie fly to left field. The next time up he bounded out.
- 56:23Hot summer coffee.
- 56:30Here comes the high fly ball in the short right field.
- 56:34Ripple coming in fast.
- 56:35William Wally is coming in.
- 56:36Nice running catch by Ripple.
- 56:38Came in on the dead run and he's getting a nice round of applause.
- 56:41He was playing rather deep for Frankie Crozzetti.
- 56:45Mike dropped that ball in the short right field with Ripple off with a crack at the bat coming in and taking the ball at top speed.
- 56:52One man out.
- 56:53Lefty Gomez is on first and red ball for left hand batter coming up.
- 57:02Red has a single and struck out out of two times at bat this afternoon.
- 57:09Six hits out of 19 times at bat.
- 57:11It's a strike call.
- 57:13Shock breaking curve ball that Rolfe pulled away from.
- 57:15The ball broke over the inside corner for a called strike.
- 57:28Outside of his ball. Ball one and strike one.
- 57:37First half of the fifth inning to score the Yankees of the American League 3.
- 57:40The Giants of the National League 2.
- 57:43One man out. Gomez is on first.
- 57:44Rolfe at bat.
- 57:45Ball one.
- 57:46Strike one.
- 57:47It's inside.
- 57:48Ball two.
- 57:56This boy, Cliff Melton, big, gambling youngster, takes a lot of time walking around out there just as cool as a cucumber.
- 58:05Very nonchalant.
- 58:06A stretch outside and this ball three.
- 58:11Three and one.
- 58:15Harry Danning, giant catcher, walking all the way up the pitcher's box now before tossing the apple back to Melton.
- 58:21Melon is walking in right way to the pitcher's box from third base.
- 58:26And the count will be ball three and strike one.
- 58:29A little drizzle of rain continues.
- 58:31Very high wind.
- 58:38And it's still just as dark as ever.
- 58:41Ball three and strike one.
- 58:43Gomez on first one out.
- 58:44We're ready to go.
- 58:45Rolfe hitting inside.
- 58:47Ball four and he walks.
- 58:51That's Gomez advancing to second.
- 58:52And Joe DiMaggio coming up and getting a nice round of applause.
- 58:56Listen to it for a moment.
- 59:06All right, one eyes on first and second.
- 59:07One out, the stretch and here it is.
- 59:09Outside.
- 59:10Ball one.
- 59:18The fans here are not sitting back in their chairs half asleep this afternoon.
- 59:21I'll tell you.
- 59:23One man out.
- 59:24Gomez on first and second, the stretch.
- 59:26Here it is.
- 59:27A high infield fly ball.
- 59:30Everybody's after it looks like.
- 59:32It's an automatic out of course, but Danning finally makes the catch.
- 59:37Well, it's on first and second, the infield fly rule.
- 59:39It's a problem there.
- 59:41Two men out.
- 59:42It would have made no difference whether or not anybody caught that ball.
- 59:56We're in the fifth inning and I have two men out now to score three to two in favor of the Yankees of the American League.
- 1:00:00We have Lava Bing Lu coming up left hand batter so far this afternoon.
- 1:00:04Lu drew a base on balls and then struck out.
- 1:00:07Gomez is on second base.
- 1:00:09Wolf is on first.
- 1:00:12Here it is.
- 1:00:13It's a ball.
- 1:00:15Shock breaking curve ball.
- 1:00:16It was too high.
- 1:00:18Manny Lou Kerrig leaning over that fight there.
- 1:00:25That's a left hander to know.
- 1:00:27Waving that bat up and down.
- 1:00:29Here it comes.
- 1:00:31Swings and misses.
- 1:00:32Strike one.
- 1:00:33Ball one and strike one.
- 1:00:35That was a pitch inside.
- 1:00:39That's another high that Kerrig tried to pull.
- 1:00:44The runner's on first and second.
- 1:00:45Two out.
- 1:00:46Ball one and strike one.
- 1:00:47Manny Lou Kerrig at the plate.
- 1:00:49And here it is.
- 1:00:51There it goes.
- 1:00:52It's a base hit in the right center field.
- 1:00:54Diva going after the ball.
- 1:00:55Gomez is found at third.
- 1:00:57Wolf is found at second.
- 1:00:58Here's the relay.
- 1:00:59Wolf found at third and had to slide back.
- 1:01:02It's a two base hit for Kerrig sending Gomez across the plate.
- 1:01:05Wolf stopping at third.
- 1:01:06Kerrig getting it double.
- 1:01:15Score.
- 1:01:16The Yankees four.
- 1:01:19And the Giants two.
- 1:01:21Kerrig is on second.
- 1:01:22Wolf is on third.
- 1:01:24Too thick he had bat.
- 1:01:26Pretty fast building by Lieber out there.
- 1:01:28That ball was hit right in the hole between left and center field.
- 1:01:31Lieber going over there fast to take that ball on the run.
- 1:01:34He got it back to that infield.
- 1:01:36Manny fast.
- 1:01:37This boy, Wolf, is a speed merchant.
- 1:01:38All right, Dickey at bat.
- 1:01:40First pitch wide.
- 1:01:42Ball one.
- 1:01:44Wide sweeping curve ball.
- 1:01:46It was about four feet outside of the plate.
- 1:01:53New York Yankees four and the New York Giants two.
- 1:01:56First bat for the fifth inning.
- 1:01:57Two out.
- 1:01:58Runners on second and third.
- 1:02:00Manny and Dickey at bat.
- 1:02:02Lieber and Ripple playing very, very deep.
- 1:02:06Here it comes.
- 1:02:07Inside.
- 1:02:08Ball two.
- 1:02:12Merle Hope coming up next.
- 1:02:20Yankees made three hits and have a base on balls this inning.
- 1:02:23Ready to go again.
- 1:02:28Melton took a lot of time before delivering this one.
- 1:02:30It's ball two and here it is.
- 1:02:32Ball three.
- 1:02:35Trying to keep that ball over the inside corner to Phil Dickey.
- 1:02:47That first bag unoccupied.
- 1:02:48He probably won't give him anything too good.
- 1:02:50Strike.
- 1:02:53Curve ball at this time.
- 1:02:54He caught the inside corner and it's ball three and strike one.
- 1:03:00Ball for standing in third.
- 1:03:02Gary Gunn second.
- 1:03:03Ball four.
- 1:03:07Ball is plenty wide at the plate.
- 1:03:08Now we have the bases loaded and the home run hitter, Merle Hope coming up.
- 1:03:12That's the second base on balls this inning for the Yankees.
- 1:03:18Now we have a play at every base.
- 1:03:20The score is four to two, you know, in favor of the Yankees.
- 1:03:23First half of the fifth inning, two men out.
- 1:03:24Rolfe on third.
- 1:03:25Gerrick is on second.
- 1:03:26Dickey is on first.
- 1:03:27Hope, right hand batter is up.
- 1:03:30Cliff Melton, giant pitcher.
- 1:03:32Going around, look to the outfield for a moment.
- 1:03:35The left hander warming up out there for the Giants.
- 1:03:42Here we go.
- 1:03:43High foul ball.
- 1:03:45Canning is going over fast.
- 1:03:47He is under it and he has it.
- 1:03:49That's all for the Yankees in the fifth inning.
- 1:03:51New runs.
- 1:03:53Three hits, two bases on balls and no errors.
- 1:03:56At the conclusion of four and a half innings to score, the Yankees at the American League,
- 1:04:00four of the Giants at the National League, two.
- 1:04:02Ladies and gentlemen, this is Tom Manning speaking to you.
- 1:04:05I had the pleasure of broadcasting the first four and a half innings and the last four
- 1:04:08and a half will be sent to you through the medium of the voice of Red Bob.
- 1:04:13This is the fifth game of the World Series between the Yankees and the Giants being played
- 1:04:17at the Polo grounds in New York City.
- 1:04:19It's being sent to you over the combined blue and red network of the National Broadcasting
- 1:04:23Company and once more we pause for station identification.
- 1:04:28This is station WMAQ Chicago.
- 1:04:34Back in the NBC booth at the Polo grounds as we are ready to go into the last of the fifth
- 1:04:39inning.
- 1:04:40Cliff Melton is slated to be the first hitter up for the Giants.
- 1:04:42As for the second time this afternoon, the Giants in this very crucial ball game, which
- 1:04:47may mean the series or may mean a continuation of it, find themselves two run behind.
- 1:04:52Early in the afternoon after the Yankees had hit two battering home runs, the Giants came
- 1:04:59from behind two to nothing as up with Paltel on first and one out in the third, having
- 1:05:04a home run for the only giant foremaster of this 1937 Polo Classic.
- 1:05:09And now as the Giants come in from the last of the fifth, they are again behind by two
- 1:05:13runs as the Yankees have turned on more power, getting two runs in the top of the fifth.
- 1:05:17It is four to two in favor of the Yankees.
- 1:05:20Melton is slated to hit first last to the fifth and then the top of the order, Joe Moore,
- 1:05:25who has by one the most base hits of any player in the series.
- 1:05:31But it looks as though Melton will not bat.
- 1:05:34Apparently there's going to be a pitch hitter coming up.
- 1:05:37And it is Blondie Ryan who is going to be first up in the last of the fifth inning.
- 1:05:41Blondie Ryan who hits right handed, who was the talisman, the good luck charm of the Giants
- 1:05:47on an earlier win in campaign in the National League, who made famous the cry of they can't
- 1:05:52beat us.
- 1:05:53And it's Blondie Ryan coming up to the plate, his first appearance in this 1937 World Series.
- 1:05:58Hitting right handed and first up, lefty Gomez pitches.
- 1:06:01Ryan takes strike one, called.
- 1:06:03A sharp curve down on the inside, just above the knees.
- 1:06:09Gomez has an easy swinging stretch.
- 1:06:10Dickey comes out of his crouch.
- 1:06:12Pitch is low for Paul once.
- 1:06:14One and one.
- 1:06:16It's rather customary for balls to be given ahead of strikes, and we bow to custom.
- 1:06:24One and one.
- 1:06:26Outfielder straight away, and not particularly deep in center.
- 1:06:28The match will be fairly close, close than usually plays.
- 1:06:31Pitch swung on, lifted high and foul into the seats, back of first base.
- 1:06:35Out one and two as Ryan is behind.
- 1:06:37Ball one, strike two.
- 1:06:40Melton, after five innings, is finished.
- 1:06:44Melton in those five innings, gave a four runs all-in on six hits, struck out five.
- 1:06:49Here's the pitch.
- 1:06:50Eye outside, the cap levels, two and two.
- 1:06:53Melton walked three men.
- 1:06:57Had a great deal of stuff.
- 1:06:59He made a couple of pitches with the Yankees, singing their theme song, I Like Mountain
- 1:07:04Music, I Gotta Hold Up.
- 1:07:05Ryan swings and lifts his strike three.
- 1:07:07Lefty Gomez strikes out Blondie Ryan, first up in the last of the fifth innings.
- 1:07:12And that for Gomez is his fifth strikeout of the afternoon, achieved in four and a third
- 1:07:18rounds.
- 1:07:19It is four to two, favor of the Yankees, who have won three games already.
- 1:07:23The Giants behind two runs have won just one game.
- 1:07:27Joe Moore, who has the most hits of any play in the series, is up batting left-handed.
- 1:07:30Takes high up above the peak of his cap.
- 1:07:32Ball one.
- 1:07:33Gomez fastballs, failed to sink it all.
- 1:07:36Vicki walks a couple of steps out in front of home plate, returns to Lefty.
- 1:07:39Lefty working as usual in quick movements.
- 1:07:43Slicks down, takes the sign.
- 1:07:45Without wasting any further time, delivers.
- 1:07:47It's inside up against the letters, and Moore leans back from it.
- 1:07:50Two-nothing.
- 1:07:51Two balls, no strikes.
- 1:07:53The outfield is pulled a little around toward right.
- 1:07:56However, Hogan left is staying straight away.
- 1:07:58Joe Moore hits to both fields.
- 1:08:01Joe chokes that bat.
- 1:08:03Takes inside again.
- 1:08:04He's ahead three-nothing.
- 1:08:06Gomez shakes his head to say, I don't like that.
- 1:08:12This is the kind of a ball game that anything can suddenly pop up in a pirate play.
- 1:08:15Gomez pitching three-nothing, gets it in there for the automatic strike.
- 1:08:18Four-taking, of course.
- 1:08:20Three-and-one.
- 1:08:21The pitchers swung on, and the Lions drive both ways out of the center field for a solid base rep.
- 1:08:25DiMaggio takes on the third bound, throws in the second to Lizally, and Moore with his eighth hit of the series.
- 1:08:32Sharp line drive, throws line single into center field, holds on at first base.
- 1:08:38That's hit number six, off Gomez.
- 1:08:41And up now steps Dick Bartell, who has one blow this afternoon.
- 1:08:46He's out the fly ball single in the left field in the third inning, just ahead of Mel Ahn, who had that home run in his system, which he finally got out.
- 1:08:53Lizally, crafty and fielded.
- 1:08:56One of the brainiest players in the game.
- 1:08:58The second has a brief converse with Gomez, talks to him a little bit about how to pitch to Bartell, a right-hand hitter.
- 1:09:02Moore leads off first.
- 1:09:03The pitch to the plate is swung on and fouled high and deep and back of third.
- 1:09:07Roth comes running over Stewart right behind him, and it drops into the seats.
- 1:09:12And amongst the spectators, about three rows back.
- 1:09:15We'd like to comment upon the fine world series that's been done by the umpires.
- 1:09:20They were very, very alert, running down the foul lines, running after plays, keeping up with the ball, on their toes and hustling all the way through.
- 1:09:29Both league presidents can be very proud of their arbiters.
- 1:09:32Accidental foul, back into the giant dugout.
- 1:09:34An outside pitch, Bartell took that puzzling half swing, tried to check himself, couldn't get his bat out of the path of the projectile, and swiped it back foul.
- 1:09:43Now Dick's behind, nothing and two, no balls, two strikes, one off.
- 1:09:47Joe Moore on first base, a very fast runner, and the Yankees lead 4-2.
- 1:09:51Time is called, but Gomez throws anyhow, so disregard the pitch.
- 1:09:54Bartell steps out of the box, umpire arms, bailed the American league, back of the plate, call time, Gomez not seeing the umpires, outstretched right palm through anyhow.
- 1:10:04So the pitch doesn't count.
- 1:10:06Still nothing and two, Bartell waiting, takes high.
- 1:10:08Now it's one and two.
- 1:10:10Going up above the ridge of Dick's nose.
- 1:10:14Artiou pulled a couple steps around toward left.
- 1:10:18Grizetti and Lazare make it up between them, who's going to cover second should Moore come down.
- 1:10:22Gomez delivers to the plate, Bartell swings, drives the fly ball out into left center field, and Artiou goes back, waves Roth out of the way and makes the catch.
- 1:10:28Uh, Volga out of the way and makes the catch.
- 1:10:31That's all for Bartell.
- 1:10:36This under applause which is now echoing through the stands is for Melvin Artiou, who put a world series crowd into its highest state of hysteria so far this fall, when he walked up to the plate in the third inning with Bartell on first and hit that home run to put the Giants back on a knee, even putting with the Yankees.
- 1:10:57And now Artiou is coming up for his next appearance after that home run.
- 1:11:01Two men are off, Joe Moore is on first. The pitch to Artiou outside, all one.
- 1:11:07Gomez apparently is not going to give out anything he can pull toward right field.
- 1:11:13Now field is toward right. The pitch is swung on, rolled out to second, Lazare picks it up cleanly, the throw over to Gerec, Artiou's out, still in the last of the fifth inning.
- 1:11:22And the score stands the Yankees four runs and the Giants two.
- 1:11:29Here's one drop.
- 1:11:31And Gomez in that inning after getting way to a slightly bad start when Joe Moore got his base hit, certainly fits his way out of whatever trouble might have been coming up.
- 1:11:42Incidentally, Joe Moore is apparently on his way to become the leading backsman of this 1937 World Series. So far he's batted successfully in each of the games that have been played to date. The right-handed pitchers or left-handed pitchers don't seem to make much difference to Joe.
- 1:12:01And most of his base hits have been very solid ones, line size two or over the infield. Because of the fact that Blondie Ryan was used as a pinch hitter in that inning, the Giants will have to start another pitcher.
- 1:12:16And coming in from the bullpen now is a man who looks strangely like another left-hander, Al Smith, who will probably take up here. I would call your attention to the fact that Melton in the other game he started, which was the second game of the World Series, went just about as far as he did today.
- 1:12:34Although in his first game he was driven out and in this game he was taken out for a pinch hitter.
- 1:12:40All right, Red, perhaps you want to describe some of the activities of Al Smith out there, while he's digging in on that red clay mound for territory to see what he can do to the Yankees.
- 1:12:52Thank you a great deal, Warren. Stalky little Al Smith, who has been used primarily as a relief pitcher, his entire tenure with the Giants, is now going down to Harry Danning.
- 1:13:03Melock, very cool, has come over from third and is standing on the third base edge of pitcher's mound watching Smith and talking to him as Smith is working out the last kinks in that left arm of his.
- 1:13:16And standing aside from batter's box and watching Smith also is George Selkirk, who will be first up in the sixth inning for the Yankees. He'll be followed by Lazar and then my pitcher Gomez.
- 1:13:27There's the last of the warmer pitchers and it's thrown down to second base. Whitehead takes it, puts it over to Bartell and Bartell walks it back to the mound, stands talking to Smith.
- 1:13:37Selkirk steps in, left hand hitter. Melton has just gone out of sight up into the clubhouse, finished for the afternoon.
- 1:13:46Now Bartell goes back to his post and short, the outfield pulls around toward right, Bartell moves a couple steps toward second.
- 1:13:52Right side of the infield as the steps are moving over toward right, Selkirk swings on the first pick at the sharp line, drives foul high up into the upper deck of the right field stands.
- 1:14:03Selkirk pulled out on a couple of feet too much.
- 1:14:07Oh, a solid smack. Going right up to Al Smith, the relief pitcher for the Giants this afternoon after his first pitch.
- 1:14:16Now Selkirk back again. He's twisting the handle of the bat around Vicksland, the palms of his hands to be certain that he has a firm hold on it.
- 1:14:25Smith duly worn, now ready to pitch again to Selkirk, delivers.
- 1:14:29George takes a 52 curve low inside after almost going after it, ball one. One and one.
- 1:14:35Wormsby is behind the plate this afternoon for the American League.
- 1:14:39Ma is at first, Maisel at second, and Stewart is at third. The umpires, the same assignments this afternoon as for the first game of the series.
- 1:14:50This is the fifth game. Smith down out of his stretch, delivers a change of pace low outside for ball two. Two and one.
- 1:14:59The Yankees are ahead, four to two.
- 1:15:05Smith, that is Danning's sign a moment. Down a swinging stretch, down.
- 1:15:09Smith is outside, the curve did not stay on. Three and one.
- 1:15:13Al takes a deep breath, pushes his lips out for the moment.
- 1:15:17Time's called, Selkirk steps out of the box. Now Twinkle Toes in again, he's turned slightly toward right field.
- 1:15:23Right field a ripple, back as deep as the wall will commit. Selkirk takes a change of pace in there for call strike two.
- 1:15:31Not a slow ball, but Smith slowed down his curve. Selkirk off his timing, did not go after it, after wriggling his shoulders at the pitch. Three and two.
- 1:15:43As the ground ball rolls down, McCoffee up with it and beats Selkirk to the bag easily.
- 1:15:47Selkirk out by four steps, and it's one up and one away as we start the sixth inning.
- 1:15:52Selkirk certainly took a few years off of the giant ruders here at the Polo Grounds lives.
- 1:16:01And he hits Smith's first pitch of the sixth inning, a whistling high drive that just was full foul.
- 1:16:06John Brennan is now throwing in the giant bullpen.
- 1:16:10The interrupter is Tony Lozare, who has one for two, a tremendous triple his last trip.
- 1:16:13And Lozare cannot get out of the way of an inside pitch that hits him on the left knee.
- 1:16:19Tony limps for about one step and then starts walking off down toward first.
- 1:16:25Shakes it off, he doesn't bother to lean over and rub it.
- 1:16:31That's the first hit batter in the series, Al Smith with Lozare.
- 1:16:36On first base, hitting him on the left knee.
- 1:16:40Tony is walking around, working out that left knee, letting his body weight get out on a gingerly.
- 1:16:48Tony walks off first.
- 1:17:00Gomez, waiting. Gomez is very, very happy.
- 1:17:04He singled in the fifth inning and drove in a run, hitting left handed.
- 1:17:09Runs down toward third.
- 1:17:10Ott picks it up, they throw it to second base in time for a force on Lozare.
- 1:17:15The Yankee strategy was to have the pitcher butt, which Gomez did.
- 1:17:19And the oddity of it is that Gomez looked to be a much, much better batter than the rest of his Yankee teammates who are supposed to know how to do such tricks.
- 1:17:28Gomez pushing a butt right down toward third, Ott suspicious of it, came in on the pitch, picked it up and threw down to second for a force on Lozare.
- 1:17:38Gomez with a sacrifice field of choice, which counts as an official trip to the plate, is now at first base.
- 1:17:43He has his sweater on.
- 1:17:46Very wet. Yankee's ahead by two runs and the hitter is Crezetti.
- 1:17:50Setting right handed, takes a curve outside, ball one.
- 1:17:56A few pulled a little around toward left.
- 1:18:02Montell's a step down toward third.
- 1:18:06Crezetti takes a curve that's neatly in, it counts even, one and one.
- 1:18:11Gomez, who relies mainly on his curve ball.
- 1:18:16He has curves at several speeds. He's glad to show the boys any time they want a demonstration.
- 1:18:21Ducks at first, not pitches.
- 1:18:23He misses that one low outside, two and one. Two balls, one strike.
- 1:18:27Yankees four, Giants two.
- 1:18:31This is the top of the six.
- 1:18:35Two of the Rupert rifles have been fired at blank.
- 1:18:39Gomez is the only base run at the moment.
- 1:18:42Leading off first, Joe McCartney rolls the call against it. Smith carefully pitches the position, delivers.
- 1:18:46Crezetti bounces slowly down toward third. Smith runs over, picks it up, goes back to first.
- 1:18:50In time by a half step.
- 1:18:53A slow dying top roller down toward third, which Smith himself could get to a step before Ahn.
- 1:19:00And that step difference made the difference on the out at first base.
- 1:19:04That's all for the top of the six. One.
- 1:19:07The red was one of the finest bits of feeling that the series has developed to date.
- 1:19:14Wasn't anything spectacular about it, but for all the elements that were required.
- 1:19:18And Smith getting over there towards the line after that hit.
- 1:19:22And keep from sliding in that sort of soggy ground.
- 1:19:25Then ride himself, get the ball over to first base in time to keep Crezetti from getting an infield hit.
- 1:19:31All those things combined to make that quite a play.
- 1:19:35And at this point, I would say that this World Series is nineteen hundred thirty seven.
- 1:19:40That certainly produced a lot of great plays.
- 1:19:44Every game has seen some splendid feelings.
- 1:19:48Things on the part of individuals on both sides.
- 1:19:52And right at this moment, although the Yankees are leading four to two and the game is past the halfway mark.
- 1:20:01One never knows what might develop.
- 1:20:04The Yankees are coming to bat now with the middle part of their batting order.
- 1:20:09Preparing to face lefty Gomez and we shall see what we shall see.
- 1:20:13All right, first up in the last of the sixth inning, Ripple, Levo, McCoffee.
- 1:20:21Gomez has not finished throwing down his preliminary pitches to Bill Dickies yet.
- 1:20:25He has one or two more left.
- 1:20:27On fire, Orensby standing in back of Dickie, holding his mask in his hand, design the procedure.
- 1:20:33Vasari is stationed patiently down at second base, waiting for the last of the pitches and the return to him by Dickie.
- 1:20:39There it is.
- 1:20:40Twenty-fifths are down to short.
- 1:20:41Crisetti passes it on to Roff, the third baseman.
- 1:20:44Gomez following the flight of the balls, is in position to take it.
- 1:20:47This soon as Roff puts it over to him.
- 1:20:49Now stepping in is Ripple, who has one for two this afternoon.
- 1:20:52Getting left handed, he takes the fastball inside.
- 1:20:56All one.
- 1:20:57Outgives toward right.
- 1:20:58One and nothing to Ripple.
- 1:20:59First up, last of the sixth.
- 1:21:00The Giants two runs behind.
- 1:21:02Gomez shoots it down.
- 1:21:03Ripple swings it to line drive over to get his head taped out in the left field.
- 1:21:06A whistling single.
- 1:21:08And Ripple with his second single is on first base, opening up the last off the sixth inning.
- 1:21:15A sharp single to left field.
- 1:21:20That's hit number seven for the Giants.
- 1:21:23And it's hit number thirteen in the ball game.
- 1:21:27What will it mean?
- 1:21:28What will it lead to?
- 1:21:31Up now is big, blonde, hand cleaver, right hand hitter.
- 1:21:35The pitch is a curve breaking sharply down in for a called strike.
- 1:21:40Gomez fixes his uniform a moment.
- 1:21:43Licks the fingers quickly of his left hand.
- 1:21:47The infield is straight away.
- 1:21:49Upper half step around second.
- 1:21:51The outfield is straight away.
- 1:21:53Garry holds first against Ripple.
- 1:21:55Inside for ball one.
- 1:21:58One and one.
- 1:21:59One ball, one strike.
- 1:22:04Leaver, one and a slip pick, all for figure.
- 1:22:08Tap the end of his pat down on the plate and straightens out.
- 1:22:12Gomez fires.
- 1:22:13Leaver swings at the foul back off the genetic.
- 1:22:15Straight back.
- 1:22:17One and two.
- 1:22:18Tank's behind.
- 1:22:21Tank, one of the few ball players in World Series history to have two hits and one inning.
- 1:22:27Those are his two hits for the series and he got them both.
- 1:22:29The Giants beginning yesterday.
- 1:22:30Gomez pitches.
- 1:22:31Leaver swings as a foul hits down onto the plate and foul on the ground and back of third.
- 1:22:36Schneider, the Giants third base coach, picks it up.
- 1:22:43That field still remains straight away.
- 1:22:50Gomez ready to go.
- 1:22:52Delivers.
- 1:22:53Leaver swings as they hit into left center field.
- 1:22:57Around second goes Ripple and when the ball is momentarily comboed by DiMaggio, he hits the third.
- 1:23:02And then when Joe picks it up, he ducks right back to second.
- 1:23:05That was one of these, I go this way, I go that way and finally I stay where I am.
- 1:23:10Ripple advances to second as Leaver hits a solid single out into left center field.
- 1:23:16DiMaggio picking it up momentarily and Ripple started the third.
- 1:23:19And then when he saw Joe recovering, he immediately held off.
- 1:23:22And McCoffee has two pitches in the ball pen throwing hurriedly.
- 1:23:32They look from this distance to be Murphy and Wicker.
- 1:23:38No money out.
- 1:23:39The Giants have the tying runs on in the last of the sixth inning.
- 1:23:42And the hitter is Jack McCoffee.
- 1:23:44The Yankee infield is pulled up looking for a butt.
- 1:23:46There it is and it's fouled down along the third base line.
- 1:23:51McCoffee trying to sacrifice the two Giants runners from first and second to second and third
- 1:23:57to put them both in position to be scored on a base hit.
- 1:24:01That's the strategy at the moment or was the strategy on that last pitch.
- 1:24:06Snyder, the third base coach, called Ripple to run down the third.
- 1:24:10While the Yankees are having a confab around pitches mound,
- 1:24:14Ripple comes down and Snyder tells him personally.
- 1:24:16Evidently he's not going to trust the sides on what this next move is to be.
- 1:24:24The tying runs along for the Giants, the underdogs, to a game lead battling back.
- 1:24:30The Yankees lead four to two.
- 1:24:32This is the last of the sixth.
- 1:24:33Nobody out and with singles.
- 1:24:34Ripple is on second and Leaver on first.
- 1:24:36The pitch to McCoffee is butted.
- 1:24:37This one toward the pitcher.
- 1:24:38Gomez feels it.
- 1:24:39Throws over to third and times for a fourth.
- 1:24:40That's third.
- 1:24:41That's the only play.
- 1:24:43Gomez handling McCoffee's bunt which was butted straight back down the middle.
- 1:24:47Throwing it over to Red Rock for a force by two steps on Ripple who was coming down from second.
- 1:24:55For you have to score McCoffee as a sacrifice field of choice.
- 1:24:59Advanced Leaver on the play down to second base and have Ripple force that third.
- 1:25:06Gomez, two off.
- 1:25:07The tying runs are still on but now one man is out.
- 1:25:11Let's see how the Yankees play for this.
- 1:25:13They're pulling their infield back straight away.
- 1:25:16Evidently playing for a double play.
- 1:25:19The other is Danning.
- 1:25:21That's right handed.
- 1:25:23Gomez delivers.
- 1:25:24Danning swings and misses.
- 1:25:26And he went after that one like a hungry man after food when he hasn't tasted in three days.
- 1:25:32Strike one.
- 1:25:33Danning after swinging on that pitch and missing it asks on fire Aubry to examine it.
- 1:25:39Put's the on fire. That's it.
- 1:25:42And finds the ball well qualified to remain in play.
- 1:25:47Leaver leading off second.
- 1:25:48McCoffee off first.
- 1:25:49Danning swings at the high foul back into the second back to the stands.
- 1:25:56Nothing and two.
- 1:25:57Gomez has now jumped ahead with his first two pitches on Harry Danning.
- 1:26:00Danning going after both of them.
- 1:26:03Danning is punishing a big wad of gum.
- 1:26:06Chewing steadily, methodically.
- 1:26:11Gomez out of position. Delivers Danning swings and misses.
- 1:26:14Strike three.
- 1:26:19Gomez ball down and with three pitches executed Danning to accomplish his sixth striking fee of the afternoon.
- 1:26:30The outfield has to be straight away on Danning.
- 1:26:32Gomez now shifts sharply toward right despite the fact that Whitehead is a right hand hitter.
- 1:26:37They don't play him to pro.
- 1:26:38Burgess Whitehead takes a strike.
- 1:26:40Gomez taking a wicked curve down in there.
- 1:26:44Gomez bearing down Brunninger now in this clutch here in the last of the sixth.
- 1:26:49Delivers.
- 1:26:50There's the ground ball rolled down to a second base for Lozare who's up with it plays over to Gehrig.
- 1:26:54That's Hall for Burgess Whitehead.
- 1:26:56And so ends the giant threat of getting back on an equal plane with the Yankees in the ballgame.
- 1:27:02And at the end of six innings the Yankees are still ahead by their two runs, four to two.
- 1:27:07The Yankees are still ahead but rather because of some of the most effective touching in the pinch by Gomez that the series has produced as yet.
- 1:27:20Those two runners on base and no one out certainly looked as if the Giants were going to go somewhere.
- 1:27:27So that when he had to Gomez certainly came in there with some fine pitching in that inning as he did in his first game.
- 1:27:35And that is one of the reasons I suppose why it is that up to the present time Gomez has never been defeated in a World Series ballgame.
- 1:27:43He's doing all right today too.
- 1:27:45All right Ed.
- 1:27:46Thanks Warren. Another stop to seventh inning where the Yankees coming to bat against the Leafs pitcher Al Smith.
- 1:27:53Red Rolf is the first hitter.
- 1:27:55DiMaggio and Gehrig in line.
- 1:27:57Rolf getting left handed in the crouch.
- 1:27:59The Giants pull to the right.
- 1:28:00Red takes a strike.
- 1:28:01Smith puts the curve right down and over.
- 1:28:03Preaching that plate.
- 1:28:04Strike one called.
- 1:28:07Al takes the sign from Banning.
- 1:28:09Gehrig comes out of his crouch and sets his admitted target.
- 1:28:11Rolf swings.
- 1:28:12Triggers it down towards third. Ott picks it up to throw it to first. It's going to be close.
- 1:28:16It's entire mile half step.
- 1:28:17Rolf is out.
- 1:28:19He hits that one apparently off the end of his bat.
- 1:28:22Roll it down towards third.
- 1:28:24One up and one away for the Yankees starting to seventh.
- 1:28:31A little left hander who's been leaving Al Smith.
- 1:28:34He came on to start the sixth inning after starting pitcher Melton gave way for a pinch hitter.
- 1:28:38He's now ready to pitch to DiMaggio.
- 1:28:40Joe takes a strike.
- 1:28:41That was a fast ball just above the knees.
- 1:28:43Just a half an inch above the knees.
- 1:28:45Strike one called.
- 1:28:47DiMaggio has one for three this afternoon and what a blow that one was.
- 1:28:51Home run.
- 1:28:52Alfield what left in deep.
- 1:28:53Joe swings and misses.
- 1:28:55Well that home run was still firmly planted in his mind's eye.
- 1:28:59As though that were the stars from which to hit his wagon.
- 1:29:05Now Smith ahead.
- 1:29:06Nothing in two.
- 1:29:07One out.
- 1:29:08Nobody on him to seventh.
- 1:29:10Over his head and down.
- 1:29:11It's low.
- 1:29:12Danning tries to block it but it bounce away from him.
- 1:29:14Doesn't make any difference.
- 1:29:15Nobody's on.
- 1:29:16Ball one.
- 1:29:17One and two.
- 1:29:20DiMaggio picks up a little of the moist clay.
- 1:29:23Rubs it into the palms of his hands.
- 1:29:25Now gets a hold of the bat.
- 1:29:26Bounces it down two or three times on the plate.
- 1:29:28Straightens up.
- 1:29:31Then a side from one front.
- 1:29:33Stands like an automaton.
- 1:29:34Very popular with that bat caught high behind his right ear.
- 1:29:36Swings.
- 1:29:37Bounce it.
- 1:29:38He's got it played and up against him.
- 1:29:40Count remains one and two.
- 1:29:42Ball still in play.
- 1:29:43Danning going out.
- 1:29:44Picking it up.
- 1:29:45Going down to Ahtu.
- 1:29:46Swoops it quickly over to Al Smith.
- 1:29:52John Brennan.
- 1:29:53Drawing.
- 1:29:54And the giant bullfin.
- 1:29:55Nobody working in the Yankee one.
- 1:29:57Smith pitching.
- 1:29:58Right swing swinging.
- 1:29:59A low curve ball on the outside.
- 1:30:01DiMaggio is quick.
- 1:30:03That's the first back out for Al Smith.
- 1:30:05And it's the sixth Yankee to be banned this afternoon.
- 1:30:08All told there have been 12 strikeouts so far in this fifth World Series ball game of 1937.
- 1:30:15In which the Yankees are leading 4-2.
- 1:30:18Here is Luke Garrick who hammered a double his last time up in that Yankee fifth when they went ahead.
- 1:30:23Garrick getting left at it.
- 1:30:24Takes a strike.
- 1:30:27I believe that's the fastest ball that Smith has thrown.
- 1:30:29He whips it down on the inside.
- 1:30:31Just under the waistline.
- 1:30:34Yatsiel Sharper toward right and deep.
- 1:30:36Big powerhouse hitter waiting.
- 1:30:37Takes outside.
- 1:30:38That one didn't stay on.
- 1:30:39One and one.
- 1:30:43Combs behind first.
- 1:30:45Fletcher behind third.
- 1:30:46Both talking it up.
- 1:30:47Yelling encouragement to Garrick.
- 1:30:48He stands there quietly almost spotty late.
- 1:30:52He's ready.
- 1:30:53Swing.
- 1:30:54As the line dives deep under the right ripper coming in.
- 1:30:55Can't get it.
- 1:30:56Smith the ball bounds over his head.
- 1:30:57Goes back against the wall.
- 1:30:58Garrick is around first.
- 1:30:59There he goes for second into the bullfin.
- 1:31:01Goes able-picked it up.
- 1:31:02Garrick is coming toward third.
- 1:31:03Right head goes out and takes the throw in.
- 1:31:04And Garrick holds up that third base with a triple.
- 1:31:08It has to be scored as a triple.
- 1:31:11Garrick hit a tremendously fast traveling low line drive straight out into right field.
- 1:31:17Ripple came running in and then saw he could not possibly catch it.
- 1:31:21And so he tried to check himself to take it easily on the first foul without having to play the ball trapped.
- 1:31:26But as you know the Polo grounds is very, very wet after an all night and a partially morning rain.
- 1:31:33And when Ripple tried to put the brakes on, well the spikes weren't long enough.
- 1:31:39His feet went out from under him.
- 1:31:40He fell flat up on his back.
- 1:31:42And Garrick's ball bounced squarely over him.
- 1:31:44Went up against the wall, down into the giant bullfin and was up to leave it to retrieve it.
- 1:31:48A triple for Garrick.
- 1:31:50Here in the seventh with two out.
- 1:31:51And now the batter is Bill Dickey getting left handed.
- 1:31:54Bill tries to push a butt and it goes foul down toward third base.
- 1:31:59So Gomez's fair butt of the sixth inning, even if it did not accomplish its desired result, becomes more and more momentous.
- 1:32:10Luke Garrick with a sharp triple reading down off third.
- 1:32:15Dickey up there, one strike again.
- 1:32:17That's the first hit off Al Smith.
- 1:32:19And it's the seventh hit for the Yankees this afternoon.
- 1:32:22The Giants have eight blows.
- 1:32:24Dickey waiting, hasn't hit today's swing.
- 1:32:26There's a high fireball, felt it deep in the center.
- 1:32:29Lieber is back waiting and he has it.
- 1:32:32That's all for the third of the top of the seventh.
- 1:32:36No runs.
- 1:32:38One hit.
- 1:32:39And it's still four to two the Yankees with the Giants coming in for what they hope will be their half of the lucky seventh.
- 1:32:47And here's more than half of the Mike Warren Brown.
- 1:32:50Thank you, Red.
- 1:32:51Well, it doesn't seem as though we can have a single half inning in this ball game without getting some manner of a thrill.
- 1:32:57That was one of the high points of the game, certainly.
- 1:33:01That ball that Garrick lined out there into right field.
- 1:33:04And the Giants, after all sorts of difficulties out there, really did do some remarkable work in holding that to three bases.
- 1:33:13Perhaps Garrick might have kept on coming and given us a little more excitement down here in front of us at the home plate.
- 1:33:20But Hank Lieber got over there in the bullpen after Jimmy Ripple was taken out of the play by falling down.
- 1:33:27The excitement contingent upon the racing of Lieber into the bullpen and the racing of Garrick around the bases with the possibility at first of a home run inside of the grounds certainly had everybody up and yelling around here.
- 1:33:42The pitching of Smith has been really effective.
- 1:33:47He's been in there for two innings now and outside of that ball which Garrick landed on him, he hasn't been hit hard at all.
- 1:33:54That was the only base hit and most of the others that batted against him fell to hit solidly.
- 1:33:59We're having a pinch hitter now for the Giants as they come to bat in their half and I'll turn the microphone back to Red.
- 1:34:07Benning instead of Al Smith, the relief pitcher who took Melton's place is Gus Mancuso who has a broken right little finger but he's hitting nevertheless.
- 1:34:18He takes high outside and it's ball one for the Swarthaville Giant captain, Mancuso, who split the first bone in his right little finger.
- 1:34:30Gus takes a strike, bonehead coming right in there with it, one and one, Gus batting right handed.
- 1:34:40Mancuso steps, goes out on a crouch, takes outside, fast ball that did not break down on in.
- 1:34:47Two and one, first shot up to the last of the seven.
- 1:34:50The outfield is straight away on Mancuso.
- 1:34:53The infield is playing straight away also.
- 1:34:56The office perhaps just a little wide at third but he seems to place third a little wider than most third basemen anyhow.
- 1:35:02Bonehead comes down with that left arm, outside and high for ball three.
- 1:35:07We're in one, the Mancuso, who has yet to offer.
- 1:35:11Gus has just a slight bandage over the end of his right little finger.
- 1:35:16If he didn't look very closely you wouldn't detect him.
- 1:35:18Gus has been soaking that finger.
- 1:35:20It seems like 24 hours every day in plenty of water trying to get the swelling down.
- 1:35:25Gus takes strike two, fast ball is pulled right through.
- 1:35:28Three and two, Mancuso, pinch hitting, starting off the last of the seven.
- 1:35:40The pitch, three-two, is hung on.
- 1:35:42It's a high fly ball into right center, circle, gun-rid and has it.
- 1:35:46Pinch hitter Mancuso is out.
- 1:35:52Now it's one away, starting the giant half of the seventh to last of the seventh.
- 1:35:57The ball game stands at four to two in favor of the American Lakers.
- 1:36:03Atop of the Orland, Joe Moore, who has eight hits in this series out of 21 trips.
- 1:36:08He has the most hits of any ball player on either side of the fence.
- 1:36:11Betting left-handed, takes inside, one that caused him to lean back but did not break down over the plate.
- 1:36:16Ball one.
- 1:36:19Moore has two singles out of three tries today.
- 1:36:22So if she sticks somewhat, swings and misses.
- 1:36:24Going for one in there on the fingers, one and one.
- 1:36:29Luque, one of the greatest of the Cuban ball players in the major leagues.
- 1:36:34The Giants coached first, Snider behind third.
- 1:36:37Moore takes inside, getting back from it to ball two, two and one.
- 1:36:43That field of Oge is straight away.
- 1:36:44Center field of DiMaggio is about four steps over toward right center.
- 1:36:48That's a trick that's straight away in right.
- 1:36:51Moore swings and hits a line drive to right center field, which is in there for a hit.
- 1:36:55Joe's third of this ball game this afternoon.
- 1:37:00His third blow, this one going out into left center field.
- 1:37:04And that gives Moore three for four today and gives him nine hits out of 22 tries.
- 1:37:12Now there seems to be an electric wave of excitement surging through the polo grounds.
- 1:37:17It is more or less edge out from the far end of their seats.
- 1:37:21They feel that something might be ready to pop or happen.
- 1:37:26Big Bartel's up there, running right handed.
- 1:37:29Swings and fouls back into the stands.
- 1:37:31The upper deck behind home, strike one.
- 1:37:34It's a four to two ball game at the moment in favor of the Yankees.
- 1:37:41With one out and the last to the seven.
- 1:37:43Joe Moore is on first base for the Giants.
- 1:37:45Gerrig holds the corner. The pitch to Bartel is swung on, lifted high and short.
- 1:37:49In back of shortstop, Crisetti under it and he has it.
- 1:37:53Then he drops it deliberately and throws over to second baseman, Lazzari.
- 1:37:58And so the out is on Moore, who is thereby forced at second base.
- 1:38:05And Bartel is at first.
- 1:38:09The infield fly rule does not come up on that situation.
- 1:38:12What happens is this, Crisetti deliberately dropped that pop by Bartel.
- 1:38:18The idea was, because it was such an easy looking play from the start,
- 1:38:22Crisetti hoped that Bartel would not be running it out.
- 1:38:25And thereby, if he was not, they might have gotten a double play.
- 1:38:30As it is, Moore is forced to second base, short to second, and Bartel is the runner in first.
- 1:38:34The first pitch to Melat, low outside, the ball won.
- 1:38:38And now the stage is set in the seventh, as it was in the third, except for one difference.
- 1:38:42One was out in the third, now two are out in the seventh.
- 1:38:45Ott takes ball two, one thrown to the point of his shoulder,
- 1:38:48which drives him down to a knee, getting out of the way, and it's two-nothing.
- 1:38:51Ott is at the plate, Bartel is at first base, and the Giants are two runs behind.
- 1:38:56Ott remedied that in the third. Can he do it in the seventh?
- 1:38:59He takes high inside under the chin, ball three.
- 1:39:05And it's three-nothing to Melat.
- 1:39:12The pitch is inside for ball four.
- 1:39:15Gomez gives up his first pass on the ball game,
- 1:39:19walking Melat to put the tying run at first base.
- 1:39:23Bartel scrolls on down to second.
- 1:39:27Bartel at second, out at first, and Jimmy Ruppel has been hit on.
- 1:39:30He has two for three this afternoon.
- 1:39:32He has five blows out of 16 tries in the series.
- 1:39:35Ruppel stands at the plate, a sturdy left-hand swinger.
- 1:39:38Gomez delivers outside for ball one.
- 1:39:46Accompy has two of his right-handers warming up in his bullpen now for the Yankees.
- 1:39:51Gomez delivers, Ruppel takes inside against him for ball two.
- 1:39:55Gomez is having difficulty with his control.
- 1:39:58He has not drawn a strike on any of his last six tries.
- 1:40:02On at first, the tying run.
- 1:40:04Bartel at second, two off in the last of the seventh.
- 1:40:07The pitch now, two-nothing. He's taken for ball three up against Ruppel.
- 1:40:11And it's three and all to Jimmy Ruppel.
- 1:40:14One more pitch and it will be wide, and the bases will be filled.
- 1:40:18The tying run pushed down two seconds.
- 1:40:21However, there will be a deliberation before this fourth pitch to Ruppel.
- 1:40:26Luke Gehrig, the captain, comes walking down and talks to catcher Bill Dickey.
- 1:40:31Rainey Second baseman Lazare comes over to the mound along with Third baseman Red Rall
- 1:40:35to talk to pitcher Gomez.
- 1:40:39Now Gehrig goes down toward first.
- 1:40:44Gomez steps back on the pitcher's plate.
- 1:40:46Lazare goes walking back to second.
- 1:40:48Presetti takes his depth of short.
- 1:40:50Rall gets position on third.
- 1:40:52It's three-nothing to Ruppel.
- 1:40:53The pitch, strike one call, right in there.
- 1:40:57Gomez had no choice but to try and throw a straight one, straight as a string,
- 1:41:02two as a dock.
- 1:41:03That it was.
- 1:41:04Now field toward right, three and one.
- 1:41:06Ruppel hit this one. Let's see.
- 1:41:07He takes it. It's off, strike two.
- 1:41:11Three and two.
- 1:41:13Gomez takes a look out to the ball pit.
- 1:41:15It's good to say, well, I'm glad to know you guys are out there, but I hope I don't need you.
- 1:41:19Now the pitch is the runner's break is swung on.
- 1:41:21Down to Lazare who's up with it over to Frank that throws the ripple
- 1:41:24and two ends the threat in the last of the seven-tenning.
- 1:41:28And the ballgame stands at the end of seven hectic split-arounds,
- 1:41:32four for the American League Yankees and two for the National League Giants.
- 1:41:37We pause for station identification.
- 1:41:42WMAQ Chicago.
- 1:41:44Back in the NBC booth in the parlor grounds
- 1:41:47where the New York Yankees and Giants are engaged in their World Series game.
- 1:41:51The Yankees leading at the present time four to two.
- 1:41:55The Giants just having missed another opportunity
- 1:41:58in their half of the seventh getting someplace and getting the score tied.
- 1:42:03Once again as in the sixth inning, the Giants had two men on bases
- 1:42:08and that was the way the inning ended with the two men still on bases.
- 1:42:13The necessary hit was not forthcoming.
- 1:42:16Jimmy Ripple who was up there in the pinch hit the ball hard
- 1:42:19but directly at Tony Lazare and thus Vernon Gomez in these last two innings
- 1:42:25having given the Giants opportunities to get the score squared
- 1:42:30certainly clamped down on them when it really began to get serious.
- 1:42:34However, these two innings have provided a rather large crowd
- 1:42:38for a rather chilly afternoon here at the parlor grounds.
- 1:42:42A little bit more excitement to add to what has been created ever since the game started.
- 1:42:48This is far and away the most interesting game of the entire series
- 1:42:52and that interest has been sustained from start right to the present time.
- 1:42:56We're going into the eighth inning now and Red Barber it's your turn.
- 1:43:01Thank you Warren and it's now Don Brennan's turn out there on the mound
- 1:43:04to make his second relief appearance in this World Series.
- 1:43:08Don Brennan who spent most of his years in baseball as property of the Yankees
- 1:43:12and now with the Giants gets his first chance to pitch against the Yankees.
- 1:43:16Brennan is ready to pitch to hold first up in the eighth inning.
- 1:43:19The Yankees lead 4-2. Right hand to Brennan delivers.
- 1:43:22The curve ball is outside. Ball runs.
- 1:43:24Don fits the ninth inning Friday and set down Vicki Selkirk and Hogan order.
- 1:43:31He's ready for his second pitch now to hold.
- 1:43:33Jenna Crouch hitting right hand to hold swings and misses above it for Spike one, one and one.
- 1:43:38Brennan very cool, very smart.
- 1:43:41He has a great deal of stuff.
- 1:43:43He relies on his control and on his knowledge of hitters weaknesses.
- 1:43:46He delivers. It's a fast ball in there.
- 1:43:49Spike two, one and two.
- 1:43:53Hold first up in the eighth.
- 1:43:55Hogan this afternoon has one blow out of three tries.
- 1:43:59That was a home run first up in the second inning.
- 1:44:02That was the first score of the afternoon.
- 1:44:04Don delivers. A curve which is swung on, lifted deep out on the left.
- 1:44:07Jomar is going back, back, back, back and leaning against the wall he makes the catch.
- 1:44:12Right against the 414 foot distance side.
- 1:44:16Jomar, 414 feet away from home plate, leaned way back up against the boards and made the catch.
- 1:44:25That's all for hold.
- 1:44:29And the fielding plays are excellent.
- 1:44:32Continuous pace.
- 1:44:34And I believe we are approaching even higher hysterical heights in this World Series ball game, the fifth of 1937.
- 1:44:42Now it's one out in the top of the eighth and the batter is Selkirk hitting left handed.
- 1:44:46He hasn't hit this afternoon out of three tries.
- 1:44:48He failed to get a hit yesterday.
- 1:44:51George Brenning left handed.
- 1:44:53Probably played from behind.
- 1:44:55Selkirk swinging.
- 1:44:56Jomar hit out of the right field. Ruppel stays on his feet this time.
- 1:44:59Chops it.
- 1:45:00The throw is in the second and Selkirk with a single holds up at first base.
- 1:45:04Single in the right for George Selkirk.
- 1:45:08That is hit number eight for the Yankees.
- 1:45:12Good afternoon.
- 1:45:13The amount of now is Tony Lozari who hit a tremendous 415 foot on the fly triple in the fifth inning.
- 1:45:20You know this is a ball park that is 25 straight through the middle.
- 1:45:25Lozari hitting right habit.
- 1:45:28Choking that stick drastically.
- 1:45:29The outfield is straight away.
- 1:45:31Infield up around second.
- 1:45:32Strike one called.
- 1:45:35Right in.
- 1:45:36Up the knees.
- 1:45:38One out.
- 1:45:39Selkirk on first.
- 1:45:41McCarvey holds the corner.
- 1:45:42John takes the sign.
- 1:45:43Turn that forward again.
- 1:45:48Turning the show of emotion and gets ready down in the pitcher position.
- 1:45:51Delivers outside as the pitch out but there's no throw to first.
- 1:45:53As McCarvey was not back on the bag.
- 1:45:56And thanks to Selkirk was closer to first base than McCarvey.
- 1:46:02One and one to Lozari.
- 1:46:04Four to two.
- 1:46:05Play for the Yankees over the Giants.
- 1:46:07A curve that misses the outside corner not holding on.
- 1:46:12Lozari goes ahead on the count two and one.
- 1:46:15Melat is playing back fairly deep at third and a little bit over to the line.
- 1:46:22Throw to first by Brennan.
- 1:46:23Holding Selkirk on.
- 1:46:26Bartell spoke to Whitehead.
- 1:46:29Rest of the keystone combination for the Giants.
- 1:46:31Behind the back of his glove he does it again now.
- 1:46:34Telling Whitehead who's going to cover second.
- 1:46:36Should Selkirk come down.
- 1:46:37A high fly ball into short left field.
- 1:46:39Jorma is on his mule coming in fast.
- 1:46:41But it's short stop Bartell back for the catch.
- 1:46:45Lozari hits sky high.
- 1:46:49Up into the clearing clouds of the afternoon.
- 1:46:52The threat of rain which came up at the start of the fifth inning when a few mystery drop spells
- 1:46:57appears to have been vanished.
- 1:46:58No one is thinking of rain any longer.
- 1:47:00That's two out in the eighth.
- 1:47:03The hitter will be Gomez.
- 1:47:05There he is coming up to the plate.
- 1:47:08Back to that candid.
- 1:47:11He's south-pouish all the way through.
- 1:47:13Banning goes out to talk to Brennan.
- 1:47:17Gomez standing a third of the way out in front of home plate.
- 1:47:21Talking for the moment.
- 1:47:24Gomez stands quietly leaning on his back to a well-propped.
- 1:47:30Banning touches back on home plate.
- 1:47:34Brennan sets out there on the mound.
- 1:47:36Selkirk ready to go on anything.
- 1:47:38Two out, leaps way down off first.
- 1:47:40The outfield is full court right and in close.
- 1:47:42Gomez crotches, takes inside.
- 1:47:44The knees for ball one.
- 1:47:46Gomez has a hit.
- 1:47:49If he can win this ball game, there will be no holding him tonight.
- 1:47:52He can also win a game pitching and get a base hit to boot and won the drives and the runs.
- 1:47:56Gomez swings, there's a low-line drive in to left.
- 1:47:59More waiting for it takes it.
- 1:48:01Gomez is out.
- 1:48:03But he's set.
- 1:48:04He smoked that apple right quickly on the nose.
- 1:48:07That's all for the top of the eighth inning.
- 1:48:10And as we get ready to go into the last of the eighth with the Giants coming in,
- 1:48:13the Yankees still lead four to two.
- 1:48:16Well, if it is true, as it seems to be in the last couple of innings,
- 1:48:22that Gomez is letting down a little as a pitcher off of his previous effectiveness,
- 1:48:27he's certainly picking up in his hitting.
- 1:48:30You've mentioned and Tom Manning ahead of you mentioned the fact that
- 1:48:34Gomez drove in the run, which put his ball club ahead in this 1937 World Series.
- 1:48:41And now to find him coming up there hitting at another type of pitching,
- 1:48:45Don Brennan's type and lashing that line fly out in the left field,
- 1:48:49he's beginning to look a little bit like Ty Cobb.
- 1:48:52And as you said very truly, there will be no holding him,
- 1:48:55because any pitcher likes to win his game when he's pitching.
- 1:48:59But no pitcher likes anything better than a base hit.
- 1:49:01And you said a mouthful, if I may use that expression, when you said that about Gomez.
- 1:49:06So here are the Giants with Hank Lieber taking another try.
- 1:49:09They're in their half of the eighth, all right here.
- 1:49:12Hank Lieber, you can call me on deck and Danning in the hole.
- 1:49:16Lieber has one for three this afternoon.
- 1:49:19He has three hits out of ten tries in the series.
- 1:49:22The score is four to two, the Yankees.
- 1:49:25The Giants are not only two runs behind in the ball game,
- 1:49:27but they're two runs behind in the World Series.
- 1:49:30I feel straight away in deep on Hank, who takes strike one.
- 1:49:33Gomez getting the jump for the first pitch,
- 1:49:35fall strike on the inside, right under the belt buckle.
- 1:49:40Lieber, a big powerhouse, stands at the plate waiting.
- 1:49:42Gomez delivers, that ball inside, missing by a finger.
- 1:49:46It's one and one.
- 1:49:51DiMaggio now moves over by a step, step and a half over toward left.
- 1:49:55The pitch comes in, swung on, and foul-tip straight back on the line.
- 1:49:58It's one and two.
- 1:50:00Lieber's behind, one ball, two strikes.
- 1:50:02First Giants up in the last of the eighths.
- 1:50:06Gomez drives up the fingers of his left hand,
- 1:50:10leans down, takes the sign,
- 1:50:12Gazzetti, talking it up and short, another pitch,
- 1:50:14low and into the day.
- 1:50:16Vicki traps it, has a little difficulty holding on to it,
- 1:50:19has to chase it back a couple of feet.
- 1:50:21Osby, acts for the ball, looks at it,
- 1:50:25drives it to remain in play,
- 1:50:28not scarred or roughened to a great extent.
- 1:50:33Two and two to Hank Lieber, the first Giants up in the last of the eighths.
- 1:50:36Giants trailing by two runs.
- 1:50:37Gomez delivers, Lieber swings,
- 1:50:39and it's a base hit through the hole between third and short out into left field.
- 1:50:42And Lieber holds on at first base with a single,
- 1:50:45his second straight hit this afternoon giving him two for four.
- 1:50:48A single in the left, which was hit sharply between Roth and Vicketti.
- 1:50:54That's hit number nine off Gomez.
- 1:50:58Stepping up now is young Jack McCarthy.
- 1:51:05Lindo, left hand hitter,
- 1:51:07he's finishing out his first GR in the big show.
- 1:51:10He was a rookie with the Giants in the front of the race.
- 1:51:14Gomez pitches outside, ball one.
- 1:51:21Johnny Murphy throwing out the bullpen now for the Yankees.
- 1:51:25Gomez pitches, swung out and missed.
- 1:51:28Swinging strike onto the shoulders.
- 1:51:30One and one to McCarthy.
- 1:51:33Dannings on deck swinging a couple of war clubs to make one feel lighter.
- 1:51:38The pitch is under the chin for ball two.
- 1:51:42McCarthy had to bend backwards like a reverse jackknife
- 1:51:47to keep him getting a closer shave than he would like.
- 1:51:50That is in a ball game.
- 1:51:52Gomez looks at first and now delivers.
- 1:51:54McCarthy swings with the long fly ball deep out on the right.
- 1:51:57Chuck Kirk is back, fires and takes it.
- 1:51:59And Lieber a third of the way down toward second.
- 1:52:02Touchback on the first base as the throw in comes to second baseman Lozari.
- 1:52:06That's all from McCarthy.
- 1:52:10One away in the last of the eighths.
- 1:52:14Down and out is Dannings.
- 1:52:17He had three for four yesterday, so far he's all for three today.
- 1:52:21And twice Gomez has struck him out.
- 1:52:23The other time he got him out he made him foul up to catch a Bill Dickey.
- 1:52:26Danning up.
- 1:52:30That feels straight away.
- 1:52:31Lieber leading off first, Dannings swinging, foul chips it straight back into the netting.
- 1:52:35Strike one.
- 1:52:37Dickey takes a new ball, wraps it right back out to Gomez.
- 1:52:42It's alive, loose jointed left-hander, gets the sign, licks his fingers.
- 1:52:48Now set, facing first.
- 1:52:50And time is called.
- 1:52:52Gomez starts to pitch and then has to hold up.
- 1:52:55Danning walking back out of the box.
- 1:53:07Out in the bleachers apparently, oh I see what it is.
- 1:53:13A salesman for something, one of the park salesmen for the concession in a white suit was walking up the steps in the bleachers right on a line with Dannings eye on the pitcher.
- 1:53:25So time had to be called until the rusher got out of the way.
- 1:53:27Now the pitcher's high and outside, one and one to Dannings.
- 1:53:31A batter focusing his eye on the pitcher, trying to watch the ball in the pitcher's hand. If something white distracts him out in the bleachers it can be serious.
- 1:53:39There is a line drive right to Gehrig who steps on first base, jumping Lieber long.
- 1:53:43Dannings one on an outside pitch, trying to hit it to right to you.
- 1:53:46And hit it about a yard fair inside of first right at Gehrig who smothered it with his mitts.
- 1:53:50Made one leap, blank, a frightened kangaroo, bounding on the first base for another system double play by Gehrig.
- 1:53:57And that ends the last of the eighth inning.
- 1:53:59And the Yankees are still persevering along ahead 4-2, Mr. Brown.
- 1:54:04And red that also ends another trying inning for the New York Giants for the third time in a row.
- 1:54:11Now they looked as though they were getting ready to start something but nothing has happened.
- 1:54:16That last one was really a tough break because Dannings had a chance to drive in a run two innings ago and didn't really start it out that time as though he was going to do some damage.
- 1:54:28That line drive he hit was well hit.
- 1:54:31But unfortunately for the Giants cause directly at Gehrig who was very close to first base and had no trouble making double play.
- 1:54:39That's three innings in a row now that Gromans have started the Giants off and raised some of their hopes undoubtedly.
- 1:54:47And then had them dash to earth, a rather soggy earth at the polo grounds this afternoon.
- 1:54:54Now the Yankees are coming to bat for the first half of the ninth inning and what may possibly be for their last time in the 1937 World Series.
- 1:55:06Certainly it will be unless when the Giants get around to it they get some runs.
- 1:55:10All right then.
- 1:55:11It's off the night. Right hand hitting Presetti is up. Takes low under the knees.
- 1:55:15Gromans first pitch of the ninth inning, ball one.
- 1:55:17The outfield slightly around toward left.
- 1:55:19Infield is straight away.
- 1:55:21Whitehead up a step by second.
- 1:55:23Runnin' comes down with his right arm. The pitch is inside up against Presetti's letters.
- 1:55:27And it's ball two. Two-nothing.
- 1:55:30Mikey Presetti who has just one hit in the series.
- 1:55:37Up for his 22nd time.
- 1:55:39Takes low inside for ball three.
- 1:55:43One just took off the toes of his shoe.
- 1:55:46New ball put in play.
- 1:55:49Up down at third. Takes it from Danning. Grubs it up. Walks it over to the mound.
- 1:55:53Runnin' behind now.
- 1:55:55Three and oh.
- 1:55:59Presetti set.
- 1:56:01Right hand hitter in the crowd. Shoking his stick.
- 1:56:03Down delivers.
- 1:56:04It's low for ball four and go ahead to present.
- 1:56:07Runnin' walks the first Yankee up in the ninth inning.
- 1:56:12The runner is Red Rawl.
- 1:56:15Who has one hit out of three official tries today.
- 1:56:17He's been on the bases twice. He drew a pass in the fifth inning.
- 1:56:22Outfield. Flows around toward right.
- 1:56:24They play Rawl for the full hitter.
- 1:56:26Runnin' watching first. Now delivers.
- 1:56:28Rawl front.
- 1:56:29The ball bounce down and up and hits him.
- 1:56:31It is foul.
- 1:56:33Strike one.
- 1:56:35The Giants come in.
- 1:56:37Starting to say.
- 1:56:39There the basis of the Giants argument is.
- 1:56:42That the ball when it's bounded up and hit.
- 1:56:44Rawl was in fair territory and therefore the batter should be automatically out.
- 1:56:48However, umpire ought to be ruled that the attempted butt was foul all the way.
- 1:56:54And it hits Rawl as a foul ball and therefore is just foul ball strike one.
- 1:57:01That's nothing in one.
- 1:57:03Standing walking out toward the mound.
- 1:57:05Runnin' after taking the ball from him on a short toss.
- 1:57:08Was trudging back up.
- 1:57:10That summit of red play.
- 1:57:12That is Pitcher's Hill.
- 1:57:14In the polo grounds.
- 1:57:16Nobody out. Presetti leading down off first.
- 1:57:18While they hold the corner. Whitehead is halfway down.
- 1:57:21The Giants are looking for a butt.
- 1:57:23Rawl tries to butt. This one is fair.
- 1:57:25Downing takes it. Throws down to first. Rawl is out.
- 1:57:30Presetti safely sacrificed down to second base.
- 1:57:34The Yankees in the ninth inning of this fifth game accomplish a sacrifice play.
- 1:57:39That's nothing the Giants in the first one or two games wish they had done.
- 1:57:43Instead of swinging with two strikes on them after two foul butts.
- 1:57:46Presetti sacrificed down to second.
- 1:57:48The out was downing at two o'clock.
- 1:57:50Out one away.
- 1:57:52Here at the top of the ninth. DiMaggio is up there.
- 1:57:54Runnin' off, set the pitch to him.
- 1:57:55Down delivers.
- 1:57:56Inside.
- 1:57:57Curve which started at the shoulder.
- 1:57:59Broke down toward the plate but didn't break enough. Four or one.
- 1:58:02Presetti leading off the keystone.
- 1:58:05180 feet from where they pay off.
- 1:58:08Down to the field. Step toward left and deep.
- 1:58:11DiMaggio takes high outside.
- 1:58:14Ball two.
- 1:58:16Brennan's behind. Two-nothing.
- 1:58:18Run, run. The third Giants pitcher out this afternoon.
- 1:58:21Melton started.
- 1:58:24Fits five innings. Gave way for a hitter.
- 1:58:27All four of the Yankee runs.
- 1:58:29He came off cliff.
- 1:58:32Smith fits the next two. Brennan fits one and he's now going into the ninth.
- 1:58:35Here this hit high and short out in the left field.
- 1:58:38Under it is shortstop Bartell and has it.
- 1:58:41The second out at the top of the ninth.
- 1:58:44DiMaggio popping sky high up and out.
- 1:58:49Two away on the ninth.
- 1:58:52The Yankees ahead.
- 1:58:54Four to two.
- 1:58:57Lou Gehrig steps into the plate.
- 1:59:01Lou has a double and a triple for his last two efforts.
- 1:59:04He has five hits all told in the series.
- 1:59:08His bag includes a grand slam.
- 1:59:10Not put together in any one game.
- 1:59:13But throughout the series he has one of every kind.
- 1:59:16A single, a double, a triple and a home run.
- 1:59:21That's what you'd call pretty fair country clout.
- 1:59:24That's the way I came from.
- 1:59:26Two away top of the ninth.
- 1:59:28Presettion second. Lou Gehrig up.
- 1:59:30He hasn't been stopped.
- 1:59:32He has two tries.
- 1:59:34Hitting left-handed takes outside.
- 1:59:36Running pitch did not come down in there.
- 1:59:38Right-handed pitcher working to a left-hand hitter.
- 1:59:40All one.
- 1:59:41Presetti ready to go on anything.
- 1:59:45Running carefully down into pitch position delivers a curve in there.
- 1:59:48And there's a throw to second which is into the dirt.
- 1:59:50But Bartell comes up with it.
- 1:59:52Presetti of course is back long ago safely.
- 1:59:56McCall strike to Gehrig with standing through down to second.
- 2:00:00He threw it into the dirt about six feet short of second base.
- 2:00:03And a couple of feet on the shortstop side of the keystone.
- 2:00:06Bartell took it on the hop.
- 2:00:08Not allowed to go through.
- 2:00:10Running into position throwing out of the shoulder.
- 2:00:12A curve down into McCall strike two.
- 2:00:15Gehrig took a long healthy stride going in on that pitch.
- 2:00:18But did not swing.
- 2:00:20And it broke sharply down in there.
- 2:00:24One and two to move.
- 2:00:26Running again in position delivering.
- 2:00:28Swing committed.
- 2:00:30Strike three.
- 2:00:31And so ended the top of the ninth inning.
- 2:00:34And the Giants will now be pressing in for what may be their last chance.
- 2:00:39One round.
- 2:00:41And even that inning could not get by without something,
- 2:00:44some little bit added to the excitement.
- 2:00:47The potential run on second base.
- 2:00:50And DiMaggio, Gehrig and Dickey supposedly coming up next.
- 2:00:55That was a trying moment for Don Brennan.
- 2:00:57I thought he did real well getting out of there without any damage.
- 2:01:01He limited DiMaggio to a high fly just a little bit back on the grass.
- 2:01:06And of course striking out Gehrig is always something to get excited about at the time.
- 2:01:14Now the Giants will be at bat for their last time.
- 2:01:20Unless they happen to get themselves two runs.
- 2:01:22And if they get more than two runs it will still be their last time.
- 2:01:26Since it is the last half of the ninth inning, the home club's half.
- 2:01:30And I imagine that the official attendance of 38,216
- 2:01:35would sort of like to see the game get tied up and go on.
- 2:01:39After all it's getting to be a much better day now than when it started.
- 2:01:43And everyone present, with the exception of the Yankee folks of course,
- 2:01:47are pulling for a tie score. Here they go, Reds.
- 2:01:50Burgess Whitehead is first up. Gomez pitches.
- 2:01:52Strike one called, a first pitch of the last of the ninth.
- 2:01:58And with what feelings?
- 2:02:00Last of the ninth is approached by both clubs.
- 2:02:03The pitch swung on and fouled back.
- 2:02:06Strike two, nothing in two to Whitehead.
- 2:02:08This afternoon Whitehead has one for three a double.
- 2:02:11He has four hits out of 15 tries in the series.
- 2:02:13The outfield is playing in, notably in center and right, and is pulled toward right.
- 2:02:21The right side of the infield is up a step, the right side is usual depth.
- 2:02:23Whitehead in the crowd swinging.
- 2:02:25It's a clouding fly out in the center.
- 2:02:26Imagine your look back and pulls it down for the out.
- 2:02:30And the Giants, two runs behind, have put two outs left to them
- 2:02:34in the ball game and in the series.
- 2:02:39One away on the last of the ninth inning.
- 2:02:41And Wally Burger is coming up to bat for Don Brenner.
- 2:02:45Wally Burger, big right-handed hitter.
- 2:02:51Wally Burger up there, takes high outside.
- 2:02:55All right, this is the third time in the series Burger has come up as a pinch hitter.
- 2:03:02He has not delivered.
- 2:03:04The pitch is high outside for ball two.
- 2:03:06Burger is ahead.
- 2:03:09Burger, who when he connects, has terrific driving power.
- 2:03:13With these fans yawning dangerously close down along each foul line, Burger sets.
- 2:03:17Gomez left-handed in.
- 2:03:18Burger swings, breaks his bat, hits it into the great front of his area.
- 2:03:21He was up for this to throw to first.
- 2:03:22Burger is out.
- 2:03:23And that's what you call insult to injury.
- 2:03:25Breaking at bat and then going out at the same time.
- 2:03:29And now but one out remains to the National League cause.
- 2:03:34The Giants being their standard ballers in this 1937 climate.
- 2:03:40And now Bill Terry, the manager of the Giants and injured catcher and captain Gus Mancuso have come out.
- 2:03:48Burger has come back to join them.
- 2:03:50And they are putting on an argument with umpire Ormsby.
- 2:03:55The argument, no doubt, being whether there was interference on Burger's swing that time with his bat.
- 2:04:04That's the second time that argument about interference by the catcher with the batter's bat has come up this afternoon.
- 2:04:10And for the first time in the series we have a conference of the four welles of the blue surge.
- 2:04:14Umpire Ormsby calls his three compatriots, his former American League umpire Basial and the National League arbiters, Braun Stewart, for a conference.
- 2:04:23And they talk it over.
- 2:04:25And they agree there was not interference.
- 2:04:27The four umpires decided then.
- 2:04:29And Terry takes off his cap and in mock deference to the umpires, follows scurrifically low.
- 2:04:36And you can see his lip work as he says, I think.
- 2:04:40Now the umpires go back to the stands between the Yankees and the championship of the world in 1937.
- 2:04:47But one out is left to the Giants cause.
- 2:04:49More swing, a slow roller down for first.
- 2:04:51Terry picks it up, the cause over to Gomez who covers.
- 2:04:53That's the final out.
- 2:04:54Gomez makes the final put out himself.
- 2:04:56Gary to the pitcher, Moore is out.
- 2:04:59And the hilariously happy Yankees are making a mad dash for their clubhouse with the Giants coming back.
- 2:05:06And the Yankees are now champions of the world.
- 2:05:10And now the national broadcasting company takes you to Tom Manning in the Yankee clubhouse.
- 2:05:15All right ladies and gentlemen, and here's the boys that hit the longest ball of the series, Joe DeMondfield.
- 2:05:20Thanks Tom, thanks Tom.
- 2:05:21It was a great thrill to win this game.
- 2:05:22I mean that home run was a great show.
- 2:05:24I never hit a ball out of my life.
- 2:05:26The Giants played a good game and we did too.
- 2:05:29I mean as far as, I went with them, joining was a great game.
- 2:05:32Thank you Joe.
- 2:05:33Where's that Gary guy?
- 2:05:35George Selkirk, come here.
- 2:05:37Yeah, there you are George.
- 2:05:38What do you want me to play now?
- 2:05:40How do you feel boy?
- 2:05:41Aw, just fine.
- 2:05:42And here's the guy that picked the two winning goal games.
- 2:05:45Come on over here Lefty.
- 2:05:46Lefty Gomez.
- 2:05:47I'm really thrilled to death and I want to say to my folks out in California,
- 2:05:52I'll be home real soon.
- 2:05:54Thank you very much Tom.
- 2:05:55What are you puffing up on?
- 2:05:56I'm happy and just running.
- 2:05:58Come on, give us a gag.
- 2:05:59It wouldn't be Lefty Gomez without some kind of a gag.
- 2:06:02Come here Bill.
- 2:06:03I do like that hit I got today Tom.
- 2:06:05I think that was a piffle.
- 2:06:06Listen, what did you have out there?
- 2:06:07Everything?
- 2:06:08Nothing, I was very lucky.
- 2:06:09All right, and here's the scouter Phil Sicki, one of the greatest catchers ever.
- 2:06:12Hello Bill.
- 2:06:13Give Gomez all the credit boy.
- 2:06:14He deserves these last, this last ball game and that first one too.
- 2:06:17He's missed great ball all during the series.
- 2:06:18He's a great pitcher.
- 2:06:19What do you have out there today Bill?
- 2:06:21Plenty, had a lot of everything.
- 2:06:22Phil you hit that old ball pretty hard but you were hitting it too far and too high.
- 2:06:26Yeah well you got to be lucky.
- 2:06:27What are you going to do this winter?
- 2:06:28Well I'm going down to Florida on a vacation right now.
- 2:06:31What are you going to do with that dough?
- 2:06:32Oh, what are you going to do with that dough Lefty Gomez?
- 2:06:35I'm going to put it into an annuity for my, when I'm an old man.
- 2:06:38You're an old man now, what do you mean when you're an old man?
- 2:06:41All right, the photographers are pushing them out here.
- 2:06:43Joe McCarthy ladies and gentlemen, the greatest manager that ever lived.
- 2:06:46One of the finest fellows, new radio and newspaper man.
- 2:06:49Ladies and gentlemen it's a real pleasure to present to you now Joe McCarthy,
- 2:06:53the manager of the world champion New York Yankees.
- 2:06:55Well I'm very happy but I really thought that the Giants would give us a little tougher battle.
- 2:07:00I really thought they'd at least win two of their, I'll win that.
- 2:07:04I just went on through the field.
- 2:07:06What's the matter Joe?
- 2:07:07I'm so tickled I don't know, I couldn't say anything anyhow.
- 2:07:09What are you going to say hello to the folks over in Buffalo?
- 2:07:11Well I want to say hello to all my good friends in Buffalo and I'll soon be back with you.
- 2:07:14Thank you.
- 2:07:15Thank you Joe a lot.
- 2:07:16Come on over here, Max Butcher, come here.
- 2:07:18Max Butcher.
- 2:07:19Well I want to first say hello to everybody in Collinsville, Illinois.
- 2:07:22I want to thank Henry Sherman for the wonderful telegram and I say to all enthusiasm,
- 2:07:27there's a wonderful demonstration going on, I'm going to let somebody else talk.
- 2:07:30Pat Malone, come on over, thanks a lot.
- 2:07:32That was a great series, in my room he pitched a great game.
- 2:07:34I'm Gomez's room and Hello Mylan and Mother and Joel,
- 2:07:37was the greatest series I believe I ever saw.
- 2:07:39What's that going to do with that big fat check?
- 2:07:41Same as last year, give it to our wife and baby.
- 2:07:43Hi Hal Tudor.
- 2:07:44Tony, come on over, what's up?
- 2:07:46Tony, come here.
- 2:07:47Tony.
- 2:07:48Hello everybody in San Francisco and Millbury, it's been a wonderful series.
- 2:07:54Thank you.
- 2:07:55Ladies and gentlemen, the President of the American League, the Honorable Will Herridge.
- 2:08:00Too much noise here but I want to just say a great victory for the American League.
- 2:08:04Thank you very much President Herridge.
- 2:08:06Red Wall, come here, don't you run away, you've got to get over here.
- 2:08:09We Redheads will stick together again.
- 2:08:11It's great to be on another winner.
- 2:08:13We all know that lefty Gomez was starting today and finished.
- 2:08:16Thank you very, very much for letting us play the lot of third base too.
- 2:08:19Listen, I want to get a hold of Luke Gerry.
- 2:08:21Where's Luke?
- 2:08:22Where's Gerry?
- 2:08:23Oh, he's sitting over here with his arms around to go to Mars, Joel.
- 2:08:26Will you get off that court for a moment?
- 2:08:28Please, will you give us a little more court?
- 2:08:30Hey, photographer, hey, photographer, off the court please.
- 2:08:33Where is that?
- 2:08:34Luke, come on up here, I've got enough court.
- 2:08:36Come on over here.
- 2:08:37Come on over here, little Michelle New York.
- 2:08:40Joel, don't be so backwards.
- 2:08:42I'm just lucky to be with a great ball club, that Joel.
- 2:08:45Listen, what do we have on that ball with you, Hickson?
- 2:08:47Come on over here, say hello to that fly for you, you big step, come on.
- 2:08:50Come on, Luke.
- 2:08:51Oh, there's a quartet in there, one hundred, they're taking pictures up there.
- 2:08:55That quartet happens to be Earl Combs, the tenor and so forth.
- 2:08:58And ladies and gentlemen, federal has broken loose.
- 2:09:00We've had the pleasure of having our NBC microphone here in the dressing room.
- 2:09:05The boys are being pushed and shoved around.
- 2:09:07I do want to get Colonel Rupert on the air for you.
- 2:09:09If I'm swimming through that, will you please say, Colonel Rupert?
- 2:09:12And here's the owner of the Yankees. Hey, hey, give me the court, please.
- 2:09:16Colonel Rupert.
- 2:09:18Ladies and gentlemen, Colonel Rupert is perhaps the happiest man here,
- 2:09:21and I know that he'd like to speak to you all over the world.
- 2:09:24And here he is, the Honorable Colonel Rupert,
- 2:09:26owner of the New York Yankees of the American League, Colonel Rupert.
- 2:09:29No doubt I'm the happiest man in the world.
- 2:09:31They've done great work and they deserve to win it.
- 2:09:33They're a fine ball club, they're fine, and they deserve it.
- 2:09:36Thank you all. Thank you, Colonel Rupert.
- 2:09:38Hey, Charlie Ruffey! Charlie! Hey, Charlie!
- 2:09:41Get Ruffey, go ahead.
- 2:09:43Tom Henry.
- 2:09:44Here's the boy that caused a lot of excitement throughout the year, Tom Henry.
- 2:09:47He was made a free agent, got himself about 25 grand.
- 2:09:50And he's from Ohio, the same state that I'm from,
- 2:09:53a smiling youngster on his first World Championship team, Tom Henry.
- 2:09:56Great to be on this team.
- 2:09:58That's my lion. I'm too darn horse to say much.
- 2:10:01I didn't get in the game, but I sure hollered like a son of a buck.
- 2:10:04You'll be in there a lot, kid, don't worry about that.
- 2:10:06And here's the old Red Ruffing himself, ladies and gentlemen,
- 2:10:09what a ball game he's had. How are you, kid?
- 2:10:11I'm fine, all right. I'm glad it's all over now.
- 2:10:13I didn't think the best team won, no two.
- 2:10:15So you're pretty happy about getting that dough that you lost early in the spring
- 2:10:18after you held out on... Oh, yeah, oh, yeah.
- 2:10:20What are you going to do with all that dough?
- 2:10:22I'll buy a whole lot in California, I think, right?
- 2:10:24Maybe the juice could catch you, though, would it?
- 2:10:26Joe Glenn, Pope Joe, I'll say if you want.
- 2:10:28Joe Glenn, come on in, Joe.
- 2:10:29I'm a little excited, but I do want to say hello to my folks
- 2:10:32and to all my friends, the great series, and I'm very happy we won.
- 2:10:36Mark Ross, Mark, Mark, come on over, sir.
- 2:10:39Here's the secretary of the Yankee Club, ladies and gentlemen, Mark Ross.
- 2:10:42This is the tenth one for me. I hope we have another one, make it 11.
- 2:10:45Thank you. Off the court, please.
- 2:10:47Wait a second, I gotta get somebody, wait a minute.
- 2:10:49Oh, no. Hey, here's the mascot.
- 2:10:51What's your name? Nobody ever tells them.
- 2:10:53Jimmy Sullivan. Jimmy, how long have you been mascot for the Yankees?
- 2:10:56Two years.
- 2:10:57Listen, you speak for the whole Yankee team now and get going, come on.
- 2:11:00Very glad we won, folks.
- 2:11:01What are you going to do with all the dough you made?
- 2:11:03Put it in the bank.
- 2:11:04What bank?
- 2:11:05Congratulations, kid. Have a good winter and we'll see you again on the spring.
- 2:11:08They're still pushing and shoving around here,
- 2:11:10and the little picture that we got now, every photographer, I believe, in America,
- 2:11:13is here in this dressing room of the Yankees,
- 2:11:15and we pull all the ballplayers on for you.
- 2:11:17This is Tom Manning speaking, and I want you to return you again to the dressing room.
- 2:11:22Back in the NBC booth at the top of the upper deck of the Polar Grounds,
- 2:11:27the crowd is streaming out on the field, rapidly making its getaway,
- 2:11:31and the 1947 World Series is definitely over,
- 2:11:35but the New York Yankees return world champions for the second year in a row.
- 2:11:40They have defeated the New York Giants, champions of the National League,
- 2:11:45in four out of five games.
- 2:11:47They managed to do that because they opened up in a manner of speaking a long lead
- 2:11:52by winning the first three games of the World Series
- 2:11:55before the Giants seemed to be unable to get going at all.
- 2:11:59Yesterday, behind the fine pitching of Carl Hubbell,
- 2:12:02the Giants were able to win and looked very much like they had looked
- 2:12:05while they were winning a championship in the National League.
- 2:12:08Today, in this, what turned out to be the final game,
- 2:12:11Lepty Gomez, who won the first game for the Yankees, came back again.
- 2:12:15He was not the same kind of a pitcher by any means today that he was in the first game,
- 2:12:20but he managed to withstand the repeated fine starts that the Giants made in several innings
- 2:12:26and held them to their two runs.
- 2:12:28The Giants got ten hits off of Gomez, but he kept them fairly well scattered.
- 2:12:33The main thing that Gomez did today was to show his ability to pitch his way out of trouble,
- 2:12:38and he was in trouble a good deal, especially in the latter part of the game.
- 2:12:41He was in most of his trouble, of course, in the third inning when Mel Ott,
- 2:12:45the New York Giants third baseman, got the Giants' only home run of the series,
- 2:12:50scoring Dick Bartel ahead of him and tying the score.
- 2:12:54The Yankees prior to that had made two runs, both on home runs off Cliff Melton.
- 2:12:59Joe DiMaggio got one of them and Marle Hoog got the other.
- 2:13:02Later on in the fifth inning, with the score tied at 2-all,
- 2:13:06Tony Lozare came through with a tremendous three-base hit in the dead center field.
- 2:13:11And then nobody else but Gomez himself came up and delivered his only hit of the series,
- 2:13:17but one that was good enough to knock home the one run that he needed to win the way he went thereafter.
- 2:13:23Later on in the ball game, when that inning, Gomez himself scored to make the score 4-2,
- 2:13:29and that was the way it went, although this crowd of a few hundred more than 38,000
- 2:13:34that was here this afternoon on a cold, really damp day with a tread of rain all the time
- 2:13:40certainly got quite a kick out of the proceedings in the latter innings.
- 2:13:44There were many chances for the Giants, and the Giants today played very fine baseball all the way through.
- 2:13:50Perhaps they didn't get the breaks that they wanted, but their chances were there for them to come through.
- 2:13:55And because they didn't, it seems to me that it goes on the credit side of Gomez
- 2:14:01as much as on the debit side of the Giants.
- 2:14:04It has been an interesting series all the way through,
- 2:14:07and this Warren Brown talking to you must say that he has enjoyed it thoroughly.
- 2:14:12And now I'm going to turn the microphone over to George Hicks, and goodbye.
- 2:14:16Again, NBC and its Associated Stations from coast to coast have brought you under a leaden sky
- 2:14:25at the Polar Grounds in New York City, the last game of the Autumnal Classic,
- 2:14:30and the complete report of all the action of the series.
- 2:14:34The Yanks win, of course, four games to one, winning the first game 8-1, the second game 8-1,
- 2:14:40the third game 5-1, the Giants winning the fourth game 7-3,
- 2:14:44and the Yankees now winning the last game 4-2.
- 2:14:48The Yanks got 8 hits and no errors, the Giants got 10 hits and no errors.
- 2:14:55Your two action describers have been Tom Manning,
- 2:14:58the veteran baseball announcer from station WTAM Cleveland,
- 2:15:02and Brett Barber, the flashy southern boy of WLW Cincinnati,
- 2:15:07and Warren Brown, the sports editor of the Chicago Herald Examiner,
- 2:15:11was that voice of authority between the innings.
- 2:15:14This is George Hicks speaking from New York.
