Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Suspense, Episode 2, aired on August 1st, 1948. Tonight's program
- 0:07Speaker 1: is Beware the Quiet Man, with Ann Southern as Margie
- 0:11Speaker 1: and William Conrad as private detective Lem Cluson. Toby Hall
- 0:15Speaker 1: wrote it, and Anton M. Leder directed and produced. Margie
- 0:20Speaker 1: is waiting for her date in a neighborhood bar when
- 0:23Speaker 1: Cluson begins discussing a new assignment. What he says about
- 0:28Speaker 1: the case, and about the quiet bank teller husband at
- 0:31Speaker 1: its center, comes uncomfortably close to Margie's own domestic life.
- 0:36Speaker 1: Over drinks, telephone calls, and an increasingly uneasy conversation, she
- 0:42Speaker 1: presses to learn more. From CBS's suspense, here is Beware
- 0:48Speaker 1: the Quiet Man. And now, our story begins.
- 0:57Speaker 2: Thank you.
- 0:59Speaker 3: In just a moment, suspense with Ann Southern.
- 1:03Speaker 4: Billy, turn that radio down. How can we play bridge?
- 1:06Speaker 5: Okay, Ma.
- 1:07Speaker 4: I like the auto light show, but not too loud.
- 1:10Speaker 4: Whose deal is it, May? Mine, Mary.
- 1:12Speaker 2: My husband Ed always listens, too. When he's home on Thursdays,
- 1:16Speaker 2: our house sounds just.
- 1:17Speaker 5: Like his service station.
- 1:18Speaker 6: I know what you mean.
- 1:19Speaker 4: Tonight's probably spark plug night.
- 1:21Speaker 2: You'd think the announcer with his commercials would be enough,
- 1:23Speaker 2: but no. It's switch to auto light resistor.
- 1:27Speaker 4: Spark plug. I know, batteries and ignition systems.
- 1:32Speaker 5: Well, Dora, what are you dreaming about?
- 1:33Speaker 4: Oh, Autolite? You mean the show with Ann Southern? Oh, Mary,
- 1:38Speaker 4: tell Billy to turn up the radio again. I wouldn't
- 1:40Speaker 4: miss Suspense. Billy, will you turn the radio up, your
- 1:43Speaker 4: Aunt Dora?
- 1:43Speaker 7: Yes, ma'am.
- 1:56Speaker 8: Suspense.
- 2:03Speaker 7: Auto Light and its 60,000 dealers and service stations bring
- 2:06Speaker 7: you radio's outstanding theater of thrills. Starring tonight, Miss Anne
- 2:12Speaker 7: Southern in Anton Leder's production of Beware the Quiet Man,
- 2:17Speaker 7: a tale well calculated to keep you in suspense.
- 2:25Speaker 1: Beware the Quiet Man.
- 2:46Speaker 8: What do you have?
- 2:47Speaker 4: Bourbon and soda with a twist of lemon.
- 2:49Speaker 8: Okay, coming right up. Say, your name Margie?
- 2:54Speaker 4: Yeah. How'd you know?
- 2:56Speaker 9: You generally come in here with a heavyset guy, black
- 2:58Speaker 9: wavy hair, wears a big diamond?
- 3:00Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 3:01Speaker 5: Yeah, he was in a while ago. Said that he'd
- 3:03Speaker 5: be late, but for you to be sure and wait
- 3:04Speaker 5: for him.
- 3:05Speaker 4: But I can't wait. I gotta get home to my...
- 3:08Speaker 4: I gotta get home. How late do you say it be?
- 3:10Speaker 8: Oh, pardon now.
- 3:11Speaker 4: Oh, for crying out loud. Okay, give me some nickels.
- 3:15Speaker 8: Here you are. Thanks.
- 3:32Speaker 9: Hello?
- 3:33Speaker 8: Mr.
- 3:33Speaker 4: Banning, please. Yeah, Mr. Arthur Banning. Arthur? Margie. I'm going
- 3:45Speaker 4: to be late for supper. Yeah, I ran into a
- 3:48Speaker 4: girl I used to know at Lincoln High. She wants
- 3:51Speaker 4: me to have a drink with her.
- 3:52Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 3:53Speaker 4: And say, will you pick up some hamburger on the
- 3:55Speaker 4: way home and start the potatoes? I'll be there as
- 3:57Speaker 4: quick as I can.
- 3:58Speaker 7: Bye.
- 3:58Speaker 8: Here's your drink.
- 4:03Speaker 4: Well, here's mud in your eyes.
- 4:09Speaker 5: Um, there's a young fellow down at the end of
- 4:11Speaker 5: the bar who wants to buy you one.
- 4:12Speaker 4: No, thanks.
- 4:13Speaker 5: Well, he looks like a nice guy.
- 4:15Speaker 4: That tall blonde fellow over by the mirror?
- 4:17Speaker 5: None other. And you got a whole lot to kill.
- 4:20Speaker 4: Is he... He isn't drunk, is he?
- 4:22Speaker 5: No, he's had a few, but he always carries it good.
- 4:25Speaker 5: It might help pass the time.
- 4:27Speaker 4: Say, what's it to you anyway?
- 4:30Speaker 5: Five bucks. You see, I'd sure appreciate it.
- 4:33Speaker 4: He offers you five bucks to get me to have
- 4:34Speaker 4: a drink with him? Yeah. He is kind of good looking. Well, okay. Sure,
- 4:41Speaker 4: what the heck, I'll have a drink with him.
- 4:51Speaker 11: Okay, so you're married. Nothing wrong with having a drink together.
- 4:55Speaker 8: So what?
- 4:56Speaker 11: I figure what your old man don't know won't hurt him.
- 4:58Speaker 4: I said I'd have a drink with you. If you've
- 5:00Speaker 4: got any other ideas, I'll buy my own.
- 5:02Speaker 10: Oh, now, don't get me wrong, honey. I spotted you
- 5:03Speaker 10: as a good kid the minute you ankled in here.
- 5:06Speaker 10: You just like excitement, that's all. And I'm the guy
- 5:09Speaker 10: that can dish it out.
- 5:10Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 5:11Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 5:12Speaker 11: You see, I'm a private eye. Yeah, no kidding, like
- 5:16Speaker 11: you hear about on the radio.
- 5:17Speaker 4: Gee, what a break for me.
- 5:19Speaker 11: You just stick around me, honey, and you'll get plenty
- 5:20Speaker 11: of excitement.
- 5:21Speaker 4: Yeah, I'll bet.
- 5:23Speaker 10: You know, you take this new client of mine now.
- 5:25Speaker 10: Bet you anything he makes the headlines tomorrow.
- 5:27Speaker 11: Yeah. Ten to one, he'll murder his wife.
- 5:30Speaker 4: Oh, yeah, sure.
- 5:31Speaker 10: He hired me to find out if his wife's been
- 5:33Speaker 10: stepping out. I felt kind of sorry for the guy.
- 5:35Speaker 10: Probably doesn't have the money to take her out himself.
- 5:38Speaker 10: He's a bank teller over at Second National.
- 5:40Speaker 4: Bank teller? Bank teller? My... What's his name?
- 5:45Speaker 11: Oh, honey, no, no, that stuff's confidential. Matter of fact,
- 5:48Speaker 11: I'm not supposed to talk about cases at all.
- 5:50Speaker 8: Oh, go on.
- 5:51Speaker 4: I won't tell anybody.
- 5:53Speaker 10: Well, you don't look like the kind of babe that
- 5:55Speaker 10: blabs everything she knows.
- 5:57Speaker 11: How about that drink, huh?
- 5:58Speaker 4: Sure.
- 5:58Speaker 11: Hey, Charlie, two over here, huh?
- 6:00Speaker 7: In the works.
- 6:01Speaker 11: You know, it sort of gave me the creeps.
- 6:04Speaker 10: This guy, he sat there eating his lunch, calm as
- 6:07Speaker 10: you please, and all the time figuring how to kill
- 6:11Speaker 10: his wife.
- 6:12Speaker 4: How'd you know what he was figuring?
- 6:13Speaker 10: Well, for one thing, he didn't want evidence for a divorce.
- 6:16Speaker 10: He sort of looked at me funny and said, I
- 6:19Speaker 10: just want to know, that's all. If Margie is stepping out,
- 6:23Speaker 10: I'll take care of it.
- 6:24Speaker 12: My own way.
- 6:25Speaker 10: Margie?
- 6:25Speaker 11: Yeah, yeah, that's his wife's name, Margie. And what's the matter?
- 6:30Speaker 4: Nothing. Nothing at all.
- 6:32Speaker 11: Hey, you don't look so good.
- 6:33Speaker 10: Maybe you drank the last one too fast.
- 6:35Speaker 4: No, no, I'm fine. I'm just naturally pale, that's all.
- 6:40Speaker 4: You were saying about this client? You figure he's going
- 6:42Speaker 4: to murder his wife?
- 6:43Speaker 11: Oh, sure, sure. It's in the back. Either that or suicide.
- 6:46Speaker 4: Suicide?
- 6:47Speaker 11: But he's more the type for murder.
- 6:49Speaker 4: Oh, one of those big, brutal guys. Sort of mean-looking, huh?
- 6:53Speaker 11: No, no. Quiet, Marcy. Kind doesn't have much to say.
- 6:58Speaker 11: Those are the guys you gotta watch.
- 6:59Speaker 4: But why?
- 7:00Speaker 10: Because they never let you know what they're really thinking.
- 7:03Speaker 10: Not until it's too late.
- 7:04Speaker 4: They don't?
- 7:05Speaker 10: You know, most guys, when they find their wives stepping,
- 7:07Speaker 10: will raise cane. Maybe they'll even get a divorce. But
- 7:10Speaker 10: they don't get sore enough to murder.
- 7:12Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 7:12Speaker 10: But these quiet fellas, you know, they put the little
- 7:14Speaker 10: woman on a pedestal. You wouldn't catch them out with
- 7:17Speaker 10: other women, not in a million years. And when they
- 7:20Speaker 10: discover their one and only has been kicking up her.
- 7:22Speaker 11: Heels, oh, brother, watch out.
- 7:24Speaker 4: Sorry.
- 7:25Speaker 10: And the worst of it is they go on acting
- 7:26Speaker 10: like nothing's wrong, you see. And then all of a sudden, wanko,
- 7:30Speaker 10: they explode.
- 7:31Speaker 4: They explode?
- 7:32Speaker 11: Yeah, yeah.
- 7:34Speaker 10: You know, like I always say, beware the quiet, man.
- 7:37Speaker 10: Like this new client of.
- 7:38Speaker 11: Mine, for example, Calm. You never met anybody calmer, but
- 7:41Speaker 11: I'll bet.
- 7:41Speaker 4: What does he look like?
- 7:43Speaker 10: Oh, just about average, I guess. Brown hair, getting sort
- 7:47Speaker 10: of thin on the top. A little bit stoop-shouldered.
- 7:50Speaker 4: Medium height? Wear glasses?
- 7:52Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 7:53Speaker 11: Yeah, you know him?
- 7:53Speaker 10: No.
- 7:54Speaker 4: No, I don't know any of the boys. Excuse me.
- 7:57Speaker 8: Hey, where are you going?
- 7:58Speaker 4: I gotta make a phone call. Just remembered something. Don't
- 8:00Speaker 4: go away. I'll be right back.
- 8:10Speaker 10: Ralph?
- 8:11Speaker 4: Margie?
- 8:12Speaker 11: Margie?
- 8:13Speaker 4: I can't see you this afternoon. No, I'm not sore
- 8:16Speaker 4: about you being late. But whatever you do, don't come
- 8:19Speaker 4: into Charlie's place. Yeah, that's where I am now. You
- 8:22Speaker 4: bet there's something wrong. There's plenty wrong. Either this guy
- 8:25Speaker 4: I'm talking to is crazy, or else Arthur's planning to
- 8:28Speaker 4: murder me.
- 8:29Speaker 12: The End.
- 8:44Speaker 7: For suspense, Autolight is bringing you Miss Anne Southern in
- 8:48Speaker 7: radio's outstanding theater of thrills, Suspense.
- 9:00Speaker 6: Well, Dora, we're down 200 on that hand.
- 9:03Speaker 4: Oh, are we?
- 9:04Speaker 6: It's easy to see there's no playing bridge with you
- 9:06Speaker 6: girls with suspense on. So let's stop playing and switch
- 9:09Speaker 6: to auto-light spark plugs or whatever for the rest of
- 9:12Speaker 6: the half hour, huh?
- 9:13Speaker 4: Oh, Mary, I could kiss you. You're such an understanding sister-in-law,
- 9:17Speaker 4: and I don't want to miss a single word. What
- 9:19Speaker 4: about you, May?
- 9:20Speaker 2: Dora, did you know that my husband knows Frank Martin,
- 9:23Speaker 2: the auto light salesman?
- 9:24Speaker 4: He does? Well, then let's listen to Mr. Martin.
- 9:27Speaker 3: Right now, you can get auto light resistor spark plugs
- 9:30Speaker 3: almost anywhere in the United States. They're sensational. Why, no
- 9:34Speaker 3: other spark plug will give and maintain such performance. Autolite
- 9:38Speaker 3: worked with leading car and truck manufacturers, and they ignition-engineered
- 9:42Speaker 3: a 10,000-ohm resistor right into the Autolite spark plug that
- 9:45Speaker 3: permits a wider spark gap setting and maintains it far
- 9:48Speaker 3: longer than in other spark plugs. Actually, when you replace
- 9:52Speaker 3: your narrow-gap spark plugs with a set of wide-gap autolight
- 9:55Speaker 3: resistor spark plugs, you can tell the difference in your car.
- 9:58Speaker 8: Oh, dear.
- 9:59Speaker 2: And I think that I'll hear every word of that
- 10:01Speaker 2: again from Ed when I get home.
- 10:03Speaker 3: Now, here's the simple lowdown. As a result of the
- 10:05Speaker 3: wide gap in the resistor spark plugs, your engine idles smoother,
- 10:09Speaker 3: you have better luck with lean gas mixtures and save gas.
- 10:12Speaker 3: And within established limits, you reduce spark plug interference with
- 10:16Speaker 3: radio and television reception. Yes, and today you can get
- 10:19Speaker 3: the resistor spark plug from almost any of Autolite's 60,000 dealers.
- 10:23Speaker 3: That's the biggest spark plug used in years.
- 10:26Speaker 7: And now Autolite brings back to our Hollywood soundstage Miss
- 10:30Speaker 7: Anne Southern as Margie in Beware the Quiet Man.
- 10:34Speaker 11: A tale well calculated to keep you in.
- 10:37Speaker 3: Suspense.
- 10:37Speaker 11: Suspense.
- 10:51Speaker 4: I stood there in the phone booth a minute after
- 10:53Speaker 4: I hung up. I wasn't scared exactly, but I had
- 10:56Speaker 4: to let those words sink in. Either this guy I'm
- 10:59Speaker 4: talking to is crazy, or else Arthur's planning to murder me.
- 11:03Speaker 4: I went back to the bar. I had to find out.
- 11:08Speaker 3: Oh, beautiful.
- 11:09Speaker 11: I thought you got a lot. Sit down, sit down.
- 11:11Speaker 4: Thanks. No, about this fellow, the one who's going to
- 11:15Speaker 4: murder his wife.
- 11:16Speaker 11: Oh, let's can the shop talk. I want to hear
- 11:17Speaker 11: about you. I don't even know your name.
- 11:20Speaker 4: Did he say what made him think she was stepping out?
- 11:22Speaker 10: Ah, she's supposed to belong to some bridge club. The
- 11:24Speaker 10: bank teller's wife's got up. But friends of his saw
- 11:28Speaker 10: her downtown a couple of times on a bridge date.
- 11:31Speaker 4: Is that all?
- 11:32Speaker 11: You know, honey, you're pretty smart. You make like you're
- 11:35Speaker 11: really interested in that guy's work.
- 11:36Speaker 4: Oh, but I am.
- 11:37Speaker 11: You know, I had a little doll once. I thought plenty.
- 11:39Speaker 11: I would have married her, maybe, but.
- 11:41Speaker 10: Only every time I started talking about Acacia, you shut
- 11:44Speaker 10: me up.
- 11:44Speaker 4: Never mind about your little dolls. What about this guy?
- 11:46Speaker 11: Hey, you're jealous. Well, what do you know?
- 11:49Speaker 4: I'm not jealous. I only want to know.
- 11:51Speaker 11: It's okay, honey. It's okay.
- 11:53Speaker 10: Sure, a cute little doll like you doesn't want to
- 11:55Speaker 10: hear a guy spotting off about another dame.
- 11:57Speaker 11: Yeah, maybe I had a few too many.
- 11:58Speaker 4: I just want to hear about this bank teller. Have
- 12:01Speaker 4: you met his wife, maybe?
- 12:03Speaker 11: No, but he showed me a picture of her. Oh.
- 12:07Speaker 4: Then you know what she looks like.
- 12:09Speaker 11: Oh.
- 12:09Speaker 4: Ha, ha, ha.
- 12:11Speaker 8: Hey, what's so funny?
- 12:13Speaker 4: Never mind. The joke's on.
- 12:17Speaker 8: Me.
- 12:17Speaker 11: Maybe you better not have many more to drink. You're
- 12:20Speaker 11: acting kind of screwy.
- 12:21Speaker 4: Oh, I feel wonderful. Well, here's to you. A long life.
- 12:26Speaker 11: Yeah.
- 12:26Speaker 4: A long, long life.
- 12:28Speaker 11: Yeah.
- 12:29Speaker 4: Down the hatch.
- 12:34Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 12:35Speaker 10: Poor little Margie. You know, you showed me a snapshot
- 12:38Speaker 10: of her in her bathing suit.
- 12:39Speaker 5: Mm-hmm.
- 12:39Speaker 11: Oh, boy, was she stacked.
- 12:42Speaker 10: As a matter of fact, about your height and build,
- 12:46Speaker 10: you're blonde like.
- 12:47Speaker 4: You, too. Was she as pretty as I am?
- 12:50Speaker 11: I couldn't see her face.
- 12:51Speaker 5: It's kind of blurred.
- 12:53Speaker 11: He's bringing me a better picture of her tomorrow.
- 12:55Speaker 4: Oh, I think I'd like another drink.
- 12:58Speaker 10: You know, honey, you better start taking vitamins or something.
- 13:01Speaker 10: You're pale as a sheep.
- 13:02Speaker 4: I said I wanted another drink.
- 13:03Speaker 11: Oh, sure. Hey, Charlie, two more of the same, huh? Yeah,
- 13:08Speaker 11: poor little Margie. You know, that's one thing I can
- 13:10Speaker 11: never figure out.
- 13:11Speaker 10: The cute little dolls with flirtatious eyes always pick some
- 13:14Speaker 10: homely quiet gink when it comes to settling down. And
- 13:17Speaker 10: the handsome he-man who has to beat off the dames
- 13:20Speaker 10: with a club, what does he do?
- 13:22Speaker 11: He marries a drab little pigeon. Yeah, that's why we
- 13:25Speaker 11: get so many axe murders, I guess.
- 13:27Speaker 4: Axe murders?
- 13:28Speaker 11: Only in this case, he'll use a gun.
- 13:29Speaker 4: But he doesn't have a... I mean, most bank clerks
- 13:33Speaker 4: don't own guns.
- 13:34Speaker 5: Oh, well, this one does.
- 13:35Speaker 2: Now.
- 13:37Speaker 4: Give me a light, will you?
- 13:38Speaker 11: Yeah, sure.
- 13:39Speaker 3: There you are.
- 13:42Speaker 10: Hey, maybe if you lay off for booze, honey, and
- 13:45Speaker 10: take a tonic or something, you'll feel better.
- 13:47Speaker 11: Look at your hands. They're trembling.
- 13:49Speaker 4: How do you know he has a gun?
- 13:50Speaker 11: Oh. Oh, I get it. Why don't you tell me?
- 13:57Speaker 4: Tell you what?
- 13:58Speaker 11: You got a squeamish stomach. All this talk about guns
- 14:00Speaker 11: and shooting. No, honey, I'm sorry. I won't say one
- 14:03Speaker 11: more word about it, I promise.
- 14:04Speaker 4: I'm not squeamish and I don't need vitamins. I want
- 14:07Speaker 4: to know how you know this bank teller guy has
- 14:09Speaker 4: a gun.
- 14:09Speaker 10: All right, so I'm going to a pawn shop and
- 14:11Speaker 10: buy one. You know, honey, I could really go for you.
- 14:14Speaker 11: It's a funny thing.
- 14:15Speaker 10: We never even introduced ourselves. That's something we gotta do.
- 14:18Speaker 10: My name's Cluson.
- 14:19Speaker 11: Lem Cluson. What's yours?
- 14:21Speaker 4: You mean that man bought a gun and now he's
- 14:23Speaker 4: home waiting to murder his wife in cold blood?
- 14:24Speaker 11: Oh, no, no. He won't do anything until he gets
- 14:27Speaker 11: my report.
- 14:28Speaker 10: You see, tomorrow I check with her friends to see
- 14:30Speaker 10: if she's been going to bridge club like she's supposed to.
- 14:33Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 14:33Speaker 11: And I meet my client for lunch and get a
- 14:35Speaker 11: picture of Margie.
- 14:35Speaker 10: And I take her around to the downtown bars to
- 14:38Speaker 10: find out if she's.
- 14:39Speaker 11: Been seen with anybody. And then I give my client
- 14:41Speaker 11: the report when he gets off work.
- 14:43Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 14:44Speaker 4: And then?
- 14:45Speaker 10: And if his suspicions are right, and they usually are,
- 14:49Speaker 10: it's all over but the shooting.
- 14:50Speaker 4: The shooting?
- 14:51Speaker 11: Yeah. Bang, bang, honey. That's all. Bang, bang. Say, what'd
- 14:56Speaker 11: you say your name was?
- 14:57Speaker 4: I've got to get home.
- 14:58Speaker 12: Hello, dear.
- 15:12Speaker 4: Hello, Arthur.
- 15:13Speaker 8: I was beginning to worry about you.
- 15:14Speaker 4: Well, I really couldn't help being late for dinner. I
- 15:17Speaker 4: wanted to leave, but May Bell, that's her name, you know,
- 15:19Speaker 4: the girl I used to go to school with, she
- 15:21Speaker 4: kept talking yatter to yatter, and I just couldn't walk
- 15:23Speaker 4: out on her in the middle of a sentence.
- 15:25Speaker 11: That's all right.
- 15:25Speaker 8: I didn't mind.
- 15:26Speaker 9: Say, the potatoes are all ready, like you told me.
- 15:28Speaker 8: Shall I.
- 15:28Speaker 4: No, no. I'll hurry dinner. You just sit down and
- 15:31Speaker 4: read the paper.
- 15:32Speaker 8: Well, thank you, dear. You all right? You look a
- 15:35Speaker 8: little flushed.
- 15:36Speaker 4: Oh, I'm fine. I was just rushing, that's all. It'll
- 15:39Speaker 4: be ready in a minute. Did you have a hard day, darling?
- 15:45Speaker 11: All usual.
- 15:46Speaker 9: People are taking out more money these days than they're
- 15:48Speaker 9: putting in.
- 15:49Speaker 4: Yeah, prices are awful, aren't they?
- 15:51Speaker 10: Hmm.
- 15:54Speaker 4: Nothing unusual? I mean, nothing happened today?
- 15:58Speaker 8: Oh, a funny thing.
- 15:59Speaker 9: A man came rushing in this morning, first thing the
- 16:02Speaker 9: doors were opened. Wanted to withdraw all the money from
- 16:05Speaker 9: their joint account before his wife beat him to it.
- 16:07Speaker 9: Seems she was leaving him for another man.
- 16:09Speaker 4: Oh, how awful.
- 16:11Speaker 10: Oh, yeah.
- 16:11Speaker 8: While he was there, she appeared. You should have heard
- 16:14Speaker 8: her carry on. She was a real shrew.
- 16:18Speaker 4: What happened?
- 16:19Speaker 3: Oh, nothing.
- 16:20Speaker 8: He didn't say a word. He was a gentleman.
- 16:23Speaker 5: But I'll bet if he'd had a gun, he'd have
- 16:26Speaker 5: killed her.
- 16:27Speaker 11: Oh, well.
- 16:28Speaker 8: Seems things like that happen all the time. Newspaper's full
- 16:31Speaker 8: of it.
- 16:34Speaker 4: Are you mad at me, Arthur?
- 16:36Speaker 10: Hmm?
- 16:37Speaker 4: Are you mad at me?
- 16:38Speaker 5: Am I mad at you?
- 16:40Speaker 8: Why, no. Should I be?
- 16:42Speaker 4: Arthur, darling, I've got something to confess.
- 16:45Speaker 8: Well, fire away.
- 16:47Speaker 4: I didn't go to bridge club last week.
- 16:49Speaker 12: No?
- 16:50Speaker 5: I thought you'd die before you gave up bridge. Really, honey,
- 16:55Speaker 5: you look awfully seedy.
- 16:56Speaker 4: No, I'm fine. I feel fine. I had sort of
- 16:59Speaker 4: a quarrel with Lorraine. I didn't want to tell you
- 17:02Speaker 4: because you're always talking about how women can't get along
- 17:04Speaker 4: with each other. Instead of going to bridge club, I
- 17:07Speaker 4: went shopping. Instead... Fine.
- 17:11Speaker 8: Only I hope you didn't go over the budget.
- 17:13Speaker 4: Oh, no.
- 17:14Speaker 8: That's good. I always said Bridge was a waste of time.
- 17:18Speaker 4: Then you're not angry about anything?
- 17:21Speaker 3: Why, no.
- 17:22Speaker 8: Why should I be?
- 17:23Speaker 11: Oh, Arthur.
- 17:25Speaker 8: What's the matter now?
- 17:26Speaker 4: I don't deserve a swell husband like you.
- 17:28Speaker 8: Oh, I'm not so hot.
- 17:30Speaker 4: Oh, you always do the dinner dishes and bring me
- 17:32Speaker 4: my breakfast in bed on Sunday mornings. The only morning
- 17:35Speaker 4: you have to sleep. Arthur... I'd feel terrible if anything
- 17:39Speaker 4: ever happened to us. Well, what's going to happen? Suppose
- 17:41Speaker 4: someday you got real mad and exploded. Exploded? Yeah. What
- 17:45Speaker 4: if you got a gun and shot me dead?
- 17:47Speaker 8: Oh, for heaven's sakes, Margie. Where do you get those
- 17:49Speaker 8: crazy ideas?
- 17:50Speaker 4: You mean, no matter how mad you got, no matter
- 17:54Speaker 4: what I did to make you mad, you wouldn't shoot
- 17:56Speaker 4: me dead?
- 17:56Speaker 8: Margie, you know I'd rather die than hurt one hair
- 17:58Speaker 8: on your head.
- 17:59Speaker 4: Oh, Arthur, not suicide.
- 18:01Speaker 8: Say, how many drinks did you and Maybel have?
- 18:03Speaker 11: Arthur.
- 18:04Speaker 4: I want you to know I'm going to change. I'm
- 18:06Speaker 4: going to be a better wife from now on. I'll
- 18:08Speaker 4: stay home all the time. And darn your socks.
- 18:11Speaker 8: You? Darn socks.
- 18:14Speaker 4: You just wait and see. I'll get up every morning
- 18:17Speaker 4: and make your breakfast.
- 18:18Speaker 8: Margie, you know you won't do any of those things.
- 18:20Speaker 4: I will, too.
- 18:21Speaker 8: Nonsense. Women like you never change.
- 18:23Speaker 11: I will, too.
- 18:24Speaker 4: I'll change right away. Tomorrow.
- 18:26Speaker 8: Besides, I don't want you to. Oh, come here, baby.
- 18:30Speaker 5: I want you to stay just exactly the way you.
- 18:32Speaker 8: Are right now.
- 18:33Speaker 4: Just exactly, Arthur.
- 18:35Speaker 8: I love you very much.
- 18:36Speaker 5: Just the way you are.
- 18:37Speaker 4: Oh, Arthur.
- 18:40Speaker 9: Hey, that reminds me. I made an appointment for you
- 18:44Speaker 9: tomorrow at 10.
- 18:45Speaker 5: You're having your picture taken.
- 18:46Speaker 4: My picture?
- 18:47Speaker 8: I showed a fellow that old snapshot of you today.
- 18:49Speaker 8: The one we took at the beach?
- 18:50Speaker 11: Oh.
- 18:50Speaker 9: It was so dog-eared he couldn't see what you looked like,
- 18:52Speaker 9: and I realized we didn't have a single decent picture.
- 18:54Speaker 11: Of you at all, so I.
- 18:56Speaker 4: But why have it taken tomorrow?
- 18:57Speaker 9: Well, the studio next to the bank is having a special,
- 18:59Speaker 9: advertising the new 60-minute service.
- 19:01Speaker 4: 60-minute service?
- 19:02Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 19:02Speaker 8: That way I can pick up the finished picture before
- 19:04Speaker 8: I go to lunch.
- 19:05Speaker 4: I don't want my picture taken.
- 19:06Speaker 8: Well, now you're being silly.
- 19:07Speaker 11: I won't.
- 19:07Speaker 4: I won't do it.
- 19:08Speaker 8: Oh, honey, what's the matter?
- 19:09Speaker 4: Don't touch me. I won't have my picture taken.
- 19:10Speaker 8: I won't. Good night.
- 19:13Speaker 11: Oh.
- 19:14Speaker 2: Oh.
- 19:19Speaker 11: Sort of gave me the creeps, this guy. Sat there
- 19:21Speaker 11: eating his lunch, calm as you please, all the time
- 19:25Speaker 11: figuring how to kill his wife.
- 19:28Speaker 9: Quiet, Marcy.
- 19:30Speaker 11: That's the kind you gotta watch. Never let you know
- 19:32Speaker 11: what they're really thinking. All of a sudden, wango, they explode. Bang, bang, honey.
- 19:39Speaker 8: That's all.
- 19:40Speaker 7: Bang, bang.
- 19:41Speaker 4: Oh, no. There must be some mistake. Arthur wouldn't hurt me.
- 19:45Speaker 4: He wouldn't. I won't think about it. I'll take a
- 19:49Speaker 4: sleeping pad. and go to bed. The gun. He did
- 19:55Speaker 4: buy a gun. It's all true. Every word of it's true.
- 20:00Speaker 12: The End.
- 20:14Speaker 4: Hello? Ralph! I told you never to call me here. No, no,
- 20:19Speaker 4: it isn't all right. Arthur bought a gun home last night. Yes,
- 20:22Speaker 4: a gun! Claimed he was keeping it for a friend,
- 20:24Speaker 4: that's all he'd say. Yeah, I think so. Just a minute,
- 20:28Speaker 4: I'll look. Ralph, the gun's gone. He must have taken
- 20:33Speaker 4: it to work. Oh, but don't you see? As soon
- 20:36Speaker 4: as he finds out for sure, he'll kill... No, no, no, no, no.
- 20:40Speaker 4: I never want to hear from you again. I've got
- 20:43Speaker 4: to think. I've got to think. Oh, not the doorbell. Oh, Lorraine. Well,
- 20:55Speaker 4: who'd you expect, darling Frankenstein? Aren't you going to invite
- 20:59Speaker 4: me in? Well, I was just going out. Don't be silly.
- 21:01Speaker 4: You're not dressed. I'm in a hurry, Lorraine. So am I.
- 21:04Speaker 4: I'm late at the beauty shop now.
- 21:05Speaker 6: But I was driving past anyway, so I thought I'd
- 21:07Speaker 6: drop in and give you the latest on the girls
- 21:09Speaker 6: at the bridge club.
- 21:09Speaker 4: Well, some other day I've... Honestly, Margie, this is choice.
- 21:12Speaker 4: You know what I heard about Mrs. Dentler? You know,
- 21:15Speaker 4: she's the wife of Ben Dentler, the new teller at
- 21:16Speaker 4: the bank. The one from Chicago. Lorraine, if you don't mind... Oh,
- 21:19Speaker 4: that's right. You haven't met her. Of course, you haven't
- 21:22Speaker 4: been around lately. Well, she's kind of a pretty little
- 21:25Speaker 4: thing in a plucked eyebrow sort of way. But it's...
- 21:27Speaker 4: You should hear what her husband told my husband. Lorraine, I...
- 21:31Speaker 4: Of course, I promised Ed I wouldn't breathe a word.
- 21:34Speaker 4: You're crying out loud, Lorraine. What? What brought that on?
- 21:38Speaker 4: I haven't time to stand and gossip. What's wrong with
- 21:40Speaker 4: you today, anyway? You're as nervous as a cat. I'm
- 21:42Speaker 4: all right. Perfectly all right. But here it is.
- 21:45Speaker 11: 10.30. 10.30?
- 21:45Speaker 4: Good heavens, I'm a half hour late. Well, goodbye. I've
- 21:47Speaker 4: got to run. Oh, darling. Be sure and read the
- 21:51Speaker 4: Gazette tomorrow. They're running a story about our bridge benefits. Okay, goodbye.
- 21:54Speaker 4: Pictures and everything.
- 21:56Speaker 6: They didn't have time to take a new picture, but
- 21:57Speaker 6: I gave them when we took the Valentine party.
- 22:00Speaker 4: The one I was in? They're publishing it? Why, sure.
- 22:03Speaker 4: I don't want my picture in the paper. But yours
- 22:05Speaker 4: was the only flattering one in the group. The reporter
- 22:08Speaker 4: picked you up right away. You seemed quite smitten. He? Oh, yes, yes.
- 22:13Speaker 4: He asked all about you. Of course, I told him
- 22:16Speaker 4: that you didn't come to meetings very often. The Gazette
- 22:19Speaker 4: doesn't use men reporters for society. Well, they do now, dear.
- 22:22Speaker 4: He didn't sound much like a reporter, though. He kept
- 22:26Speaker 4: calling me honey. Tall, blonde, fast talker? Why, yes. And
- 22:30Speaker 4: you gave him my picture?
- 22:31Speaker 6: Well, of course.
- 22:32Speaker 4: What was his name? Oh, well, that's the funny name.
- 22:37Speaker 4: I think it was Cluson. Lem Cluson. But, Charlie, it's
- 22:52Speaker 4: a matter of life and death. I've got to get
- 22:53Speaker 4: a hold of Lem before noon.
- 22:54Speaker 8: Well, like I said, he ain't been in.
- 22:55Speaker 4: You sure he never told you where he works?
- 22:57Speaker 5: No, he's come short for some private detective outfit.
- 22:59Speaker 4: Oh, give me some nickels, lots of nickels. I've got
- 23:01Speaker 4: some telephoning to do. At me, Detective Agency. Do you
- 23:07Speaker 4: have a man named Cluson working for you? Lem Cluson?
- 23:11Speaker 11: No?
- 23:11Speaker 4: Thanks. Random Agency, I want Mr. Cluson, Lem Cluson. Oh, yeah,
- 23:19Speaker 4: I guess I have the wrong number. Hawkshark detectives, I'm
- 23:24Speaker 4: looking for a man named Lem Cluson. No, I don't
- 23:27Speaker 4: want to hire you to find him. But you're the
- 23:31Speaker 4: last one in the book. He's got... Okay, sorry.
- 23:42Speaker 8: No luck?
- 23:43Speaker 12: No.
- 23:44Speaker 5: I just remembered. Lem said the guy he worked for
- 23:46Speaker 5: just opened up in town. Probably ain't in the phone
- 23:48Speaker 5: book yet. Go on, kid, get out of here.
- 23:52Speaker 9: Ah, that fresh kid, just because I won't let him
- 23:56Speaker 9: in here peddling his papers, he yells in the door.
- 23:58Speaker 4: Did he say bank suicide?
- 23:59Speaker 8: He yells in here every darn day.
- 24:01Speaker 11: Hey, wait, wait.
- 24:01Speaker 5: Hey, you didn't finish your drink.
- 24:02Speaker 4: Hey, Newsy. Newsy. Hey, boy. Hey, newspaper.
- 24:07Speaker 10: Boy.
- 24:07Speaker 4: Come here, boy. Hey, you, boy. Paper lady? Did you
- 24:13Speaker 4: say suicide?
- 24:14Speaker 3: Right in the Second National Bank. You want a paper?
- 24:16Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 24:17Speaker 4: Here.
- 24:18Speaker 3: Guy's wife steps out with another joke. So the poor
- 24:21Speaker 3: dope says, goodbye, Margie, and pulls the trigger.
- 24:23Speaker 4: Here you are, lady. Blank suicide.
- 24:25Speaker 3: Read all about it.
- 24:27Speaker 11: Well, well, if it isn't Margie.
- 24:29Speaker 4: Get away from me, Lem Cluson.
- 24:30Speaker 11: Heard you were looking for me. Well, here I am. Boy,
- 24:32Speaker 11: have I got a lot to tell you.
- 24:33Speaker 4: Let me alone. I want to read.
- 24:35Speaker 11: Oh, that write-up's no good. Here, give it here. Yeah,
- 24:37Speaker 11: that's better. Now come on into Charlie's and I'll give
- 24:40Speaker 11: you the inside.
- 24:40Speaker 4: Give me back my paper, you murderer.
- 24:42Speaker 10: Murderer?
- 24:43Speaker 11: Hey, wait a minute. Oh, I get it.
- 24:45Speaker 10: You figure he bumped himself off on account of my report.
- 24:49Speaker 10: That's a screwy part. He didn't even wait for the report.
- 24:51Speaker 11: I got it right here in my pocket.
- 24:52Speaker 4: Take your hand off my arm.
- 24:53Speaker 11: Oh, look, honey. Now, come on. You're coming into Charlie's
- 24:55Speaker 11: if I have to drag you.
- 24:56Speaker 4: Why don't you leave me alone?
- 24:58Speaker 11: I figured you'd be sore.
- 24:59Speaker 10: Might spotten off the way I did in Charlie's yesterday.
- 25:02Speaker 11: But how did I know who you were? Here we are. Hey, Charlie,
- 25:05Speaker 11: two bourbon highs, double.
- 25:06Speaker 4: I don't want a drink.
- 25:08Speaker 10: Should have seen my face this morning when that screwy
- 25:10Speaker 10: friend of yours gave.
- 25:11Speaker 3: Me the picture of your bridge club.
- 25:12Speaker 4: Oh, never mind.
- 25:13Speaker 11: And there you were, as real as life and just
- 25:15Speaker 11: as cute.
- 25:15Speaker 10: I says to myself, why, you dumb ox, you got
- 25:17Speaker 10: that little doll worried sick. And then when I read
- 25:20Speaker 10: in the paper about my client giving your husband the
- 25:22Speaker 10: gun to keep for fear he'll use it on himself, I.
- 25:24Speaker 3: Think, holy cow.
- 25:27Speaker 4: What did you say?
- 25:28Speaker 10: And then I think, I bet she figures I planned
- 25:30Speaker 10: the whole thing just to scare her.
- 25:31Speaker 4: What do you mean?
- 25:32Speaker 11: Oh, now, don't try to kid me, Margie.
- 25:34Speaker 10: You know you figured that client of mine was your husband,
- 25:36Speaker 10: that he was going to bump you off.
- 25:38Speaker 4: You mean he wasn't?
- 25:39Speaker 11: No, no, your name's Banning, isn't it? Yeah.
- 25:41Speaker 10: Well, my client's name was Dentler, Benjamin Dentler. Funny thing,
- 25:45Speaker 10: his wife being named Margie, too. Yeah, I never thought
- 25:48Speaker 10: he'd do it anyway.
- 25:49Speaker 4: Oh, I think I'd like that drink after all.
- 25:52Speaker 11: Well, here's to us, honey.
- 25:54Speaker 4: So that's the gossip Lorraine was trying to tell me. Dentler,
- 25:57Speaker 4: the teller from Chicago.
- 25:59Speaker 11: You know, I've been thinking a lot about you.
- 26:00Speaker 4: And Arthur really was keeping the gun for a friend
- 26:02Speaker 4: of his.
- 26:03Speaker 10: I'll tell you what, honey. I know a quiet little
- 26:05Speaker 10: spot across town where we can eat.
- 26:07Speaker 11: Dance, anything we want.
- 26:08Speaker 4: You might have told me about Dentler.
- 26:10Speaker 10: It's a cute little place, baby. They've got a knocked-out
- 26:12Speaker 10: band and a water floor show.
- 26:13Speaker 4: I wonder why Arthur wouldn't talk to me about it.
- 26:15Speaker 11: Well, what do you say?
- 26:16Speaker 4: Say? To what?
- 26:18Speaker 11: Well, you and me, honey. Our date. Oh.
- 26:23Speaker 4: You're asking me to step out with you?
- 26:26Speaker 11: Well, why not?
- 26:28Speaker 4: How about my husband?
- 26:29Speaker 10: Oh, that mousy little guy. We got nothing to worry
- 26:32Speaker 10: about from him.
- 26:33Speaker 4: But I thought you always said, beware the quiet man.
- 26:36Speaker 4: You never know what they're really thinking.
- 26:38Speaker 11: But this is.
- 26:39Speaker 4: No buts. If you'll pardon me, Mr. Lem Klusen, I'm
- 26:43Speaker 4: going home and start his supper.
- 27:03Speaker 7: Thank you, Ann Southern, for a splendid performance. Miss Southern
- 27:06Speaker 7: will be back in just a moment.
- 27:09Speaker 5: Dora, I apologize.
- 27:11Speaker 6: That show was better than a six no-trump hand.
- 27:13Speaker 2: Why, Mary, first thing you know, you'll be in Ed's class,
- 27:16Speaker 2: quacking about autolight resistor spark plugs like Donald Duck.
- 27:20Speaker 4: Deal me a great big hand, Mary, and watch me
- 27:22Speaker 4: get back that 200 we went down. You know, I
- 27:26Speaker 4: must get me a set of those spark plugs. Why not?
- 27:29Speaker 6: Ask Ed tomorrow to put a set of those autolight
- 27:31Speaker 6: resistor spark plugs in your car.
- 27:33Speaker 4: Oh, well, then, May, will you tell Ed I'll be
- 27:36Speaker 4: over tomorrow?
- 27:37Speaker 2: I certainly will.
- 27:38Speaker 4: My old car is going to get autolight resistor spark plugs, too.
- 27:42Speaker 3: Yes, switching to autolight is safe, sane, sound, sober judgment,
- 27:46Speaker 3: and a sure way to spark plug satisfaction. That's why
- 27:49Speaker 3: everybody is switching to autolight. Autolight means resistor spark plugs.
- 27:54Speaker 3: Ignition-engineered spark plugs. Autolight means batteries. Stay-full batteries. Autolight means
- 28:02Speaker 3: ignition system. The lifeline of your car.
- 28:14Speaker 11: And now, here again is Miss Anne Southern.
- 28:17Speaker 4: I've enjoyed this appearance on Suspense very much. And as
- 28:20Speaker 4: a regular Suspense listener, I'm looking forward to next week
- 28:23Speaker 4: when Martha Scott stars in Crisis, a powerful study in... Suspense.
- 28:40Speaker 3: Ann Southern appears by courtesy of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios, producers of
- 28:44Speaker 3: Julia Misbehaves, starring Walter Pidgeon and Greer Garson. Tonight's suspense
- 28:49Speaker 3: play was written by Toby Hall, with music composed by
- 28:52Speaker 3: Lucian Morawick and conducted by Lud Gluskin. The entire production
- 28:56Speaker 3: was under the direction of Anton M.
- 28:57Speaker 8: Leder.
- 28:59Speaker 3: Next Thursday, same time, you will hear Martha Scott in Crisis.
- 29:10Speaker 4: This is the Autolite Suspense Show calling the people of
- 29:13Speaker 4: the USA. Here's your potty, sir.
- 29:15Speaker 3: Thank you. This is CARE Incorporated. It's been nine years now,
- 29:20Speaker 3: nine years since Europe's people have been able to live decently,
- 29:23Speaker 3: buy clothes to wear, get enough to eat. That's a
- 29:26Speaker 3: long time. It's far too long. Our government is doing
- 29:29Speaker 3: something about it. Its long-range program will help restore economic prosperity.
- 29:34Speaker 3: But there won't be any immediate direct help for the
- 29:36Speaker 3: people who are hungry today. They can look only to us.
- 29:40Speaker 3: to you and me. We can send help through CARE.
- 29:44Speaker 3: The 40,000 calories of food, good food, in a CARE
- 29:47Speaker 3: package goes a long way. Because CARE is non-profit, government-approved,
- 29:52Speaker 3: it will deliver your package in Europe for just $ 10.
- 29:55Speaker 3: $ 10 sent to CARE will supplement rations of a family
- 29:59Speaker 3: of four Europeans for a month. Won't you help? Remember
- 30:03Speaker 3: the name and address, CARE, C-A-R-E, New York.
- 30:07Speaker 4: Good night. Switch to auto light.
- 30:10Speaker 3: This is CBS, the Columbia Broadcasting System.
- 30:27Speaker 1: This concludes Suspense. Beware the Quiet Man. Good night, and
- 30:30Speaker 1: thank you for sharing another evening of classic radio.
