- 0:00The Desire of Ages by ELLENJY. White, Chapter one, God with Us.
- 0:06His name should be called Immanuel, God with Us. The like of
- 0:10the knowledge of the glory of God is seen in the face of Jesus Christ.
- 0:14From the days of eternity. The Lord Jesus Christ was one with the
- 0:17Father. He was the image of God, the image of his greatness and
- 0:22majesty, the outshining of his glory. It was to manifest this glory that
- 0:27he came to our world, to this sin darkened earth. He came to
- 0:31reveal the light of God's love, to be God with us. Therefore it
- 0:35was prophesied of him his name shall be called Immanuel. By coming to dwell
- 0:40with us, Jesus was to reveal God both to men and to angels.
- 0:45He was the word of God, God's thought made audible. In his prayer
- 0:49for his disciples, he says, I have declared unto them thy name,
- 0:54merciful and gracious, long suffering and abundant, and goodness and truth, that
- 0:58the love wherewith thou hast lefd me, may be in them, and I
- 1:02in them, but not alone for his earth born children. Was this revelation
- 1:06given our little world is the lesson Book of the Universe, God's wonderful purpose
- 1:11of grace. The mystery of redeeming love is the theme into which angels desired
- 1:18to look, and it will be their study throughout endless ages. Both the
- 1:22redeemed and the unfallen beings will find in the Cross of Christ their science and
- 1:26their song. It will be seen that the glory shining in the face of
- 1:30Jesus is the glory of self sacrificing love. In the light from cavalry,
- 1:36it will be seen that the law of self renouncing love is the law of
- 1:40life for earth and heaven. That the love which seeketh not her own,
- 1:44has its source in the heart of God, and that in the meek and
- 1:48lowly one is manifested the character of Him who dwelleth in the light which no
- 1:52man can approach himTo. In the beginning, God was revealed in all the
- 1:57works of creation. It was Price that spread the heavens and laid the foundations
- 2:01of the earth. It was his hand that hung the worlds in space,
- 2:06and fashioned the flowers the field. His strength setteth fast the mountains. The
- 2:12sea is his, and he made it some sixty five six ninety five five.
- 2:16It was he that filled the earth with beauty and the air with song,
- 2:21And upon all things in earth and air and sky he wrote the message
- 2:24of the Father's love. Now sin has marred God's perfect work, yet that
- 2:30handwriting remains. Even now all created things declare the glory of His excellence.
- 2:37There is nothing save the selfish heart of man that lives unto itself, no
- 2:40bird that cleaves the air, no animal that moves upon the ground, but
- 2:46ministers to some other life. There is no leaf in the forest, or
- 2:50lowly blade of grass, but has its ministry. Every tree and shrub and
- 2:54leaf pours forth that element of life without which neither man nor animal can live.
- 3:00And man and animal in turn minister to the life of the tree and
- 3:05shrub and leaf. The flowers breathe fragrance and unfold their beauty and blessing to
- 3:10the world. The sun sheds its light to gladden a thousand worlds. The
- 3:15ocean itself, the source of all our springs and fountains, receives the streams
- 3:21from every land, but takes to give the mists ascending from its bosom,
- 3:25fall in showers, to water the earth that it may bring forth and bud
- 3:30the angels of Glory find their joy in giving, giving love, and tireless
- 3:36watch care to souls that are fallen and unholy heavenly beings woo the hearts of
- 3:40men. They bring to this dark world light from the courts above. By
- 3:45gentle and patient ministry. They move upon the human spirit to bring the lost
- 3:50into a fellowship with Christ, which is even closer than they themselves can know.
- 3:54But turning from all lesser representations, we behold God God in Jesus.
- 4:00Looking unto Jesus, we see that it is the glory of our God to
- 4:04give. I do nothing of myself, said Christ, the Living Father hath
- 4:10sent me, and I live by the Father. I seek not my own
- 4:14glory, but the glory of Him that sent me John eight twenty eight,
- 4:17six fifty seven, eight fifty seven eighteen. In these words is set forth
- 4:23the Great Principle, which is the law of life for the universe. All
- 4:27things Christ received from God, but he took to give so in the heavenly
- 4:32courts, in his ministry for all created beings. Through the beloved Son,
- 4:38the Father's life flows out to all. Through the Son, it returns in
- 4:42praise and joyous service. A tide of love to the great source of all
- 4:46and thus through Christ, the circuit of beneficence is complete. Representing the character
- 4:53of the Great giver the law of life in heaven itself. This law was
- 4:58broken originated in self seeking Lucifer, the covering cherub desire to be first in
- 5:04heaven. He sought to gain control of heavenly beings, to draw them away
- 5:09from their creator and to win their homage to himself. Therefore he misrepresented God,
- 5:15attributing to him the desire for self exaltation with his own evil characteristics.
- 5:20He sought to invest the loving Creator. Thus he deceived angels. Thus he
- 5:25deceived men. He led them to doubt the word of God and to distrust
- 5:29his goodness. Because God is a god of justice and terrible majesty, Satan
- 5:33caused them to look upon him as severe and unforgiving. Thus he drew men
- 5:39to join him in rebellion against God, and the Knight of Woe settled down
- 5:43upon the world. The earth was dark through misapprehension of God. That the
- 5:47gloomy shadows might be lightened, that the world might be brought back to God.
- 5:53Satan's deceptive power was to be broken. This could not be done by
- 5:57force. The exercise of force is contrary to the principles of God's government.
- 6:01He desires only the service of love, and love cannot be commanded. It
- 6:05cannot be won by force or authority, only by love, as love awakened.
- 6:11To know God, as to love him, his character must be manifested.
- 6:15In contrast to the character of Satan. This work only one being in
- 6:19all the universe could do. Only he who knew the height and depth of
- 6:24the love of God could make it known. Upon the world's dark night.
- 6:28The Son of Righteousness must rise with healing in his wings. Malachi for too,
- 6:34the plan for our redemption was not an afterthought, a plan formulated after
- 6:39the fall of Adam. It was a revelation of the mystery which hath been
- 6:43kept in silence through times Eternal Romans sixteen twenty five r V. It was
- 6:49an unfolding of the principles that from eternal ages have been the foundation of God's
- 6:54throne. From the beginning, God in Christ knew of the apostasy of Satan
- 7:00and of the fall of man through the deceptive power of the apostate. God
- 7:03did not ordain that sin should exist, but he foresaw its existence and made
- 7:09provision to meet the terrible emergency. So great was his love for the world
- 7:13that he covenanted to give his only begotten son, that whosoever believeth in him
- 7:17should not perish, but have everlasting life. John three sixteen. Lucifer had
- 7:24said, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God. I will
- 7:29be like the most high Isaiah fourteen, thirteen and fourteen. But Christ,
- 7:33being in the form of God, counted it not a thing to be grasped
- 7:38to be on an equality with God, but emptied himself, taking the form
- 7:42of a servant, being made in the likeness of men. Philippians two six
- 7:46and seven r v Margin. This was a voluntary sacrifice. Jesus might have
- 7:53remained at the Father's side. He might have retained the glory of heaven and
- 7:57the homage of the angels. But he chose to give back the scepter into
- 8:00the Father's hands and to step down from the throne of the universe, that
- 8:05he might bring light to the benighted and life to the perishing. Nearly two
- 8:11thousand years ago, a voice of mysterious import was heard in heaven from the
- 8:15throne of God. Lo, I come sacrifice an offering, thou wouldest not
- 8:22but a body that hast thou prepared me? Lo I come. In the
- 8:26volume of the book it is written of me to do thy will o God
- 8:31Hebrews ten five and seven. In these words is announced the fulfillment of the
- 8:37purpose that had been hidden from eternal ages. Christ was about to visit our
- 8:41world and to become incarnate. He says, a body hast thou prepared me.
- 8:46Had he appeared with the glory that was his with the Father before the
- 8:50world was, we could not have endured the light of his presence, that
- 8:54we might behold it and not be destroyed. The manifestation of his glorylory was
- 9:00shrouded. His divinity was veiled with humanity, the invisible glory in the visible
- 9:07human form. The great purpose has been shadowed forth in types and symbols.
- 9:11The burning bush in which Christ appeared to Moses revealed God. The symbol chosen
- 9:18for the representation of the deity was a lowly shrub that seemingly had no attractions.
- 9:22This enshrined the infinite, the all merciful God, shrouded his glory in
- 9:28a most humble type that Moses could look upon it and live. So in
- 9:33the pillar of cloud by day, in the pillar of fire by night,
- 9:37God communicated with Israel, revealing to men his will and imparting to them as
- 9:41grace. God's glory was subdued and his majesty veiled, that the weak vision
- 9:46of finite men might behold it. So Christ was to come in the body
- 9:52of our humiliation Philippians three twenty one r V. In the likeness of men.
- 9:56In the eyes of the world, he possessed no beauty that they should
- 10:01desire him. Yet he was the incarnate God, the light of heaven and
- 10:05earth. His glory was veiled. His greatness and majesty were hidden, that
- 10:11he might draw near to sorrowful, tempted men. God commanded Moses for Israel,
- 10:16let them make me a sanctuary that I may dwell among them Exodus twenty
- 10:20five eight. And He abode in the sanctuary in the midst of his people.
- 10:24Through all their weary wandering in the desert. The symbol of his presence
- 10:28was with them. So Christ set up his tabernacle in the midst of our
- 10:31human encampment. He pitched his tent by the side of the tents of men,
- 10:35that he might dwell among us and make us familiar with his divine character
- 10:39in life. The word became flesh and tabernacled among us, and we beheld
- 10:46his glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of
- 10:50grace and truth. John one fourteen r v. Margin. Since Jesus came
- 10:54to dwell with us, we know that God is acquainted with our trials and
- 11:00sympathizes with our griefs. Every son and daughter of Adam may understand that our
- 11:03Creator is the friend of sinners. For in every doctrine of grace, every
- 11:09promise of joy, every deed of love, every divine attraction presented in the
- 11:13Saviour's life on earth, we see God with us. Satan represents God's law
- 11:20of love as a law of selfishness. He declares that it is impossible for
- 11:24us to obey its precepts the fall of our first parents, with all the
- 11:30woe that has resulted. He charges upon the Creator, leading men to look
- 11:35upon God as the author of sin and suffering and death. Jesus was to
- 11:39unveil this deception. As one of us. He was to give an example
- 11:43of obedience. For this, he took upon himself our nature and passed through
- 11:46our experiences. In all things, it behooved him to be made like unto
- 11:52his brethren Hebrews two seventeen. If we had to bear anything which Jesus does
- 11:56not endure, then upon this point Satan would rep present the power of God
- 12:01as insufficient for us. Therefore Jesus was in all points tempted like as we
- 12:05are Hebrews. Four fifteen. He endured every trial to which we are subject,
- 12:11and he exercised in his own behalf no power that is not freely offered
- 12:16to us. As man. He met temptation and overcame in the strength given
- 12:20him from God. He says, I delight to do thy will, O
- 12:24my God, YEA, Thy law is within my heart Psalms forty eight.
- 12:30As he went about doing good and healing all who were afflicted by Satan,
- 12:33he made plain to men the character of God's law and the nature of his
- 12:37service. His life testifies that it is possible for us also to obey the
- 12:43law of God. By his humanity. Christ touched humanity by his divinity.
- 12:48He lays hold upon the throne of God. As the son of man.
- 12:52He gave us an example of obedience. As a son of God. He
- 12:56gives us power to obey. It was Christ who, from the bush on
- 13:01Mount Horeb spoke to Moses, saying, I am that I am. Thus
- 13:05shalt thou say unto the children of visual. I Am has sent me unto
- 13:09you Exodus three fourteen. This was the pledge of Israel's deliverance. So when
- 13:15he came in the likeness of men, he declared himself that I am the
- 13:20child of Bethlehem, the meek and lowly Savior, is God manifest in the
- 13:24flesh First Timothy three sixteen. And to us he says, I am the
- 13:30good Shepherd. I am the Living Bread. I am the Way, the
- 13:33Truth in the life. All power is given unto me in heaven and in
- 13:37earth. John ten eleven, six fifty one, fourteen six, Matthew twenty
- 13:41eight eighteen. I am the assurance of every promise. I am. Do
- 13:48not be afraid. God with us is the surety of our deliverance from sin,
- 13:52the assurance of our power to obey the law of Heaven. In stooping
- 13:56to take upon himself humanity, Christ revealed a character the opposite of the character
- 14:01of Satan, but he stepped still lower in the path of humiliation. Being
- 14:07found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient unto death,
- 14:11even the death of the cross Philippians two eight. As the high priest
- 14:16laid aside his gorgeous pontifical robes and officiated in the white linen dress to the
- 14:22common priest. So Christ took the form of a servant and offered sacrifice himself,
- 14:28the priest, himself the victim. He was wounded for our transgressions.
- 14:33He was bruised for our iniquities. The chastisement of our peace was upon him
- 14:37Isaiah fifty three five. Christ was treated as we deserved that we might be
- 14:43treated as he deserves. He was condemned for our sins in which he had
- 14:48no share, that we might be justified by his righteousness in which we had
- 14:52no share. He suffered the death which was ours that we might receive the
- 14:56life which was his. With his str Yes, we are healed by his
- 15:01life and death. Christ has achieved even more than recovery from the ruin wrought
- 15:05through sin. It was Satan's purpose to bring about an eternal separation between God
- 15:11and man. But in Christ we become more closely united to God than if
- 15:16we had never fallen. In taking our nature, the Savior is bound himself
- 15:20to humanity by a tie that is never to be broken. Through the eternal
- 15:24ages. He is linked with us. God so loved the world that he
- 15:28gave his only begotten son, John three sixteen. He gave him not only
- 15:33to bear our sins and to die as our sacrifice. He gave him to
- 15:37the fallen race to assure us of his immutable counsel of peace. God gave
- 15:41his only begotten son to become one of the human family forever, to retain
- 15:46his human nature. This is the pledge that God will fulfill his word.
- 15:50Unto us, a child is born, unto us, a son is given,
- 15:56and the government shall be upon his shoulder. God is adopted human nature
- 16:00in the person of his son, and has carried the same into the highest
- 16:04heaven. It is the son of man who shares the throne of the universe.
- 16:08It is the son of man whose name shall be called Wonderful counselor the
- 16:14Mighty God, the Everlasting Father, the Prince of Peace Isaiah nine six The
- 16:19i Am is the daysman between God and humanity, laying his hand upon both.
- 16:26Hugh is wholly harmless undefiled, separate from sinners, is not ashamed to
- 16:32call us brethren Hebrews seven twenty six, two eleven. In Christ, the
- 16:37family of Earth and the family of Heaven are bound together. Christ Glorified is
- 16:42our brother. Heaven is enshrined in humanity, and humanity is enfolded in the
- 16:48bosom of infinite love of his people. God says they shall be as the
- 16:53stones of a crown, lifted up as an ensign upon his land. For
- 16:59how great is his goodness and how great is his beauty Zechariah nine, sixteen
- 17:03seventeen. The exaltation of the redeemed will be an eternal testimony to God's mercy.
- 17:10In the ages to come, he will show the exceeding riches of his
- 17:12grace in his kindness towards us through Christ Jesus, to the intent that unto
- 17:18the principalities and the powers in the heavenly places might be made known the manifold
- 17:23wisdom of God according to the eternal purpose which He purposed in Christ Jesus our
- 17:29Lord, Ephesians two seven three ten eleven r V. Through Christ's redeeming work,
- 17:34the government of God stands justified. The omnipotent one is made known as
- 17:40the God of Love. Satan's charges are refuted and his character unveiled. Rebellion
- 17:45can never again arise. Sin can never again enter the universe. Through eternal
- 17:52ages, all are secure from apostasy by love self sacrifice. The inhabitants of
- 17:56earth and heaven are bound to their creator in bonds of indissoluble union. The
- 18:03work of redemption will be complete in the place where sin abounded. God's grace
- 18:07much more abounds the earth itself. The very field that Satan claims as his
- 18:14is to be not only ransomed, but exalted. Our little world under the
- 18:18curse of sin, the one dark blot in his glorious creation, will be
- 18:22honored above all other worlds in the universe of God. Here where the Son
- 18:27of God tabernacled in humanity, where the King of Glory lived and suffered and
- 18:32died. Here, when He shall make all things new, the Tabernacle of
- 18:37God shall be with men, and he will dwell with them, and they
- 18:41shall be his people. And God himself shall be with them and be their
- 18:45God. And through endless ages, as a redeemed walk in the light of
- 18:48the Lord, they will praise Him for his unspeakable gift Immanuel God with us.
- 18:57End of Chapter one,
