- 0:39SPEAKER_02: Welcome in, everybody, to the Talk and Tech Podcast, powered by Guns Up Nation, part of the Guns Up Nation Podcast Network.
- 0:46SPEAKER_02: I am your host, Steven Rodriguez, my co-host Tristan McGonagall.
- 0:49SPEAKER_02: Two episodes in one week, Tristan?
- 0:52SPEAKER_01: I know, man.
- 0:52SPEAKER_01: This is the second time I'm stepping into the studio.
- 0:54SPEAKER_01: I can't believe you maybe drive all the way out here to uh record yet another one, but it's it's a definitely a pleasure being in the office.
- 1:01SPEAKER_02: I know we had to walk a whole 10 feet to get over to our studios, quote unquote.
- 1:09SPEAKER_02: Um, no, you're big rollers.
- 1:11SPEAKER_02: Yeah, we you know, we roll big time.
- 1:13SPEAKER_02: So uh, but no, this is our second episode of the week because we recorded a basketball preview that you can go listen to with our buddy Ryan Mainville.
- 1:22SPEAKER_02: Turned out great.
- 1:23SPEAKER_02: It was about an hour and a half of just straight up Texas Tech content.
- 1:27SPEAKER_02: So after listening to this episode, go listen to that one.
- 1:30SPEAKER_02: It was fantastic.
- 1:31SPEAKER_02: We had a great time, but we didn't talk any football, we didn't recap anything, we didn't preview anything.
- 1:37SPEAKER_02: So that's what we're doing here.
- 1:38SPEAKER_02: We're talking Texas Tech football because we're coming off a dub.
- 1:41SPEAKER_02: We are five and two on the year.
- 1:43SPEAKER_02: We defeat the Kansas, the mighty Kansas Jayhawks, 41 to 14.
- 1:49SPEAKER_02: Tristan, you actually watched this game as it was going on.
- 1:53SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I thought we made the transition to basketball.
- 1:55SPEAKER_01: I thought this was a Texas Tech basketball podcast now.
- 1:58SPEAKER_01: You're really confusing me here.
- 1:59SPEAKER_01: All I have in front of me are basketball notes, but still three weeks away.
- 2:04SPEAKER_01: You know, it was it was a very boring game to watch in a good way.
- 2:08SPEAKER_01: You know, we actually went to Lawrence and did exactly what we were supposed to do, something Matt Wells has not done yet.
- 2:14SPEAKER_01: Even though Matt Wells has really only coached against Kansas twice now, um, because last year he had the COVID protocol and had to put in Coach Patterson as the interim there for a second.
- 2:24SPEAKER_01: Uh, but he did in fact lose his first time outs against the Jayhawks in Lawrence, Kansas.
- 2:30SPEAKER_01: So it's good to see that we're back to a more true to form Texas Tech, and they're a more true to form Kansas in this game because there was no reason this should have ever been closed.
- 2:38SPEAKER_01: Kansas is horrifically bad this year.
- 2:41SPEAKER_01: Uh, but like I said, boring in a good way.
- 2:44SPEAKER_01: What are your thoughts?
- 2:45SPEAKER_02: Uh, I did go back and watch it.
- 2:47SPEAKER_02: I was I was not able to watch it on Saturday due to a family event, but I did go back and watch it.
- 2:52SPEAKER_02: It was a boring game to say the least.
- 2:55SPEAKER_02: Uh, it is much better watching a Texas Tech game after you know that we've already won, I will say.
- 3:01SPEAKER_02: You, you know, your heart's not racing, uh, hoping that we don't embarrass ourselves on national TV, even though this one was on ESPN Plus.
- 3:09SPEAKER_02: But still, you know, we we all had that concern.
- 3:11SPEAKER_02: We're coming off a terrible TCU loss.
- 3:14SPEAKER_02: We're like, are we just gonna teeter and we're just gonna be awful going into this Kansas game?
- 3:18SPEAKER_02: But no, it was the opposite.
- 3:19SPEAKER_02: So it was nice to see our team play a complete game.
- 3:23SPEAKER_02: Um uh Kansas is really bad, like they're really, really bad.
- 3:27SPEAKER_02: And that's mostly what I took away from this game.
- 3:30SPEAKER_02: Uh, long methodical drives by tech, which was nice to see, converted on some third downs, which was really good.
- 3:36SPEAKER_02: Sir Roderick was fantastic, but uh, you know, overall, there's just not a lot to take away because Kansas is truly awful.
- 3:45SPEAKER_01: I mean, I tell you what, though, I'm very pleased with what I saw.
- 3:49SPEAKER_01: It was pretty much a shutout for all of Tutz's purposes.
- 3:51SPEAKER_01: They only got garbage down touchdowns against our backups, they didn't get anything on our uh starting defense.
- 3:58SPEAKER_01: Granted, they did miss a field goal in the first quarter, but our defense still held it down.
- 4:03SPEAKER_01: We would have totally accepted it just three points off our starting defense against Kansas because this wasn't going to just be a given straight up.
- 4:10SPEAKER_01: We're gonna slam them to the ground because of the way the past two games have gone.
- 4:13SPEAKER_01: And you saw how it went against Stephen F.
- 4:15SPEAKER_01: Austin, probably team fairly similar in talent level.
- 4:18SPEAKER_01: So and Florida International, those weren't exactly just pop them in the mouth immediately.
- 4:23SPEAKER_01: They're they were a bit of games for a bit, especially the Stephen F.
- 4:26SPEAKER_01: Austin game.
- 4:27SPEAKER_01: So I was really happy to see us in mid-season here go into it and play a team like Kansas, like they're actually Kansas and blowing them out of their own stadium.
- 4:35SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it was nice to see.
- 4:37SPEAKER_02: Uh, I know some people were concerned with uh the Kansas quarterback, Jason Bean, going into this game because he's an explosive runner, he's quick, he can get out there.
- 4:46SPEAKER_02: Uh, but we really held him down.
- 4:48SPEAKER_02: And uh, you know, for having uh we I think we were down two defensive linemen in this one in Tony Bradford and Troy Tao.
- 4:54SPEAKER_02: So we rushed two defensive linemen a lot of the time this game, which normally would be awful to watch, but we held it down.
- 5:02SPEAKER_02: Uh the linebackers got in there rushing and uh we pressured him and made him run outside and and try to force some things.
- 5:09SPEAKER_02: And truly, we should have had four interceptions this game.
- 5:12SPEAKER_02: I remember watching, uh, I watched, you know, I got to skip through the commercials, which was nice.
- 5:17SPEAKER_02: So I got to see every play back to back.
- 5:19SPEAKER_02: And I mean, he gifted us four interceptions, and we got one of them, which was good, but we really should convert on all four of those when we're playing the better teams.
- 5:28SPEAKER_02: Take what you can get at that point.
- 5:30SPEAKER_01: Absolutely.
- 5:31SPEAKER_01: And you know, if you can get those four interceptions, there's a good chance you're gonna win that game against a better team.
- 5:36SPEAKER_01: So I really do hope we kind of clean that up.
- 5:37SPEAKER_01: You know, winning turnover battles so important.
- 5:40SPEAKER_01: Uh, overall, I think our offense played really well as well.
- 5:43SPEAKER_01: Uh, the only I think we all know the first the only thing that stands out as a wart on the resume from the offense this game was a bizarre choice from Henry Henry Columbi to toss into double coverage, uh to to result in a Kansas interception when it just it didn't need to happen.
- 5:58SPEAKER_01: We were getting we are having no issues getting first downs against this Kansas defense.
- 6:03SPEAKER_01: And I remember it wasn't even third down yet, uh to force just pretty much like a Hail Mary sort of play.
- 6:08SPEAKER_01: Uh, but other than that, you know, like he said, our running backs played well, uh, our wide receivers played well enough, and and our quarterbacks got the job done.
- 6:16SPEAKER_01: So I there's not a whole lot to complain about in the about in that sense.
- 6:20SPEAKER_02: I think this game really showed what Matt Wells wants to do on the offense is slow, long, methodical drives and getting down three third down territory, converting, make sure the defense gets the rest that they need.
- 6:37SPEAKER_02: Uh, you know, the defense doesn't need to be out there a long time.
- 6:39SPEAKER_02: If we can make these offensive drives longer, keep the ball in our possession.
- 6:43SPEAKER_02: That's what Matt Wells has always wanted to do since he got to tech.
- 6:46SPEAKER_02: And we got to do that uh against Kansas.
- 6:48SPEAKER_02: Uh we ran a lot of jet sweeps.
- 6:51SPEAKER_02: I mean, uh, there was a ton of them, uh, two of them for touchdowns, one with uh a wide receiver, uh uh one with Erica Zukama coming, one side, one with Caitlin Geiger on the other side.
- 7:01SPEAKER_02: Uh, so this is kind of the offense.
- 7:03SPEAKER_02: It's not pretty, it's not you know exciting, but it's what Matt Wells wants to run, and it's what you can do with Henry Columbia as your quarterback, which is nice.
- 7:11SPEAKER_02: Sirodric, like I said, had a fantastic game, uh broke off a few long runs there, but was really consistent throughout the entire game, finding the gaps and making it work, whether it's a six-yard gain, an eight-yard gain here, sometimes a 17-yard gain.
- 7:26SPEAKER_02: But uh, he was really good.
- 7:27SPEAKER_02: So I was I was impressed with how Sirodric played consistently throughout the whole game.
- 7:32SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I'm glad you said that.
- 7:34SPEAKER_01: I'm glad you you worded it like that because this is definitely where Henry Columbia excels.
- 7:37SPEAKER_01: He does so much better than the Dincan pass sort of offense instead of the uh gunslinging big arm sort of plays.
- 7:44SPEAKER_01: Uh, like it did take forever to score.
- 7:47SPEAKER_01: And I remember you said going into the season that you want to see some of that, you wanted to see us take 10 plays to score.
- 7:54SPEAKER_01: Um, and you may not be able to do that against every defense, but I'm glad we got to practice and kind of put it in motion against this Kansas Jayhawk team.
- 8:02SPEAKER_01: Um, but it because Henry, you probably can't really rely on Henry Columbi making those clutch big play uh breakaway wide receiver uh plays.
- 8:11SPEAKER_01: So, but I'm I'm glad we got to just take it easy on the playbook.
- 8:14SPEAKER_01: We're we weren't forced to do anything drastic and uh drastic, Jurassic, you know, dinosaurs too.
- 8:20SPEAKER_01: Um and we we took care of business.
- 8:24SPEAKER_01: There's just not a whole lot to say on offense.
- 8:26SPEAKER_01: They they played great, and I tell you what, man, it was really cool to see us bust out some of the backup quarterbacks and obviously other uh backup receivers and stuff.
- 8:34SPEAKER_01: Like Donovan Smith played really well.
- 8:36SPEAKER_01: Uh yes, it's Kansas, but the guy went out there and to got and got some of the most playtime he's seen he's seen on the college field, and he took care of business, he did great.
- 8:46SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and you're seeing uh with every Matt Wells interview, he's starting to say, Hey, we're opening up the playbook a little more for Donovan Smith as you know he gets more reps, he gets more games under his belt.
- 8:56SPEAKER_02: Uh, and we saw him pass a few times, we saw a couple audibles that he had to take care of.
- 9:01SPEAKER_02: We saw a nice run-in touchdown where he absolutely demolished the Kansas linebacker there.
- 9:07SPEAKER_02: Um, it was great.
- 9:09SPEAKER_02: It was great.
- 9:09SPEAKER_02: Donovan Smith played awesome.
- 9:11SPEAKER_02: He's really looking like a potential quarterback in the future.
- 9:14SPEAKER_02: I know Baron Morton is the is the hot name to talk about, four-star recruit coming in.
- 9:18SPEAKER_02: But Donovan Smith was with the team last year, he's with the team this year.
- 9:22SPEAKER_02: I mean, he he looks good.
- 9:23SPEAKER_02: And obviously, Matt Wells likes him.
- 9:25SPEAKER_02: He's throwing him out there.
- 9:26SPEAKER_02: Sonny Cumby likes to use him there in some third down situations.
- 9:30SPEAKER_02: And uh man, I mean, you like you said, it is Kansas, you know, so you know, take that with what you will.
- 9:36SPEAKER_02: But uh Donovan Smith looked poised, he looked calm, and he looked uh he looked solid.
- 9:41SPEAKER_01: For sure.
- 9:42SPEAKER_01: I remember uh Texte Tech Twitter went off whenever he threw his first pass because it's like, holy cow, he can do it.
- 9:48SPEAKER_01: So everyone likes seeing the Lubbock boy succeed.
- 9:50SPEAKER_01: Uh so you're right, man.
- 9:52SPEAKER_01: It's gonna be interesting to see how he evolves into this team.
- 9:54SPEAKER_01: You know, he's a very young kid, he's got plenty of years left, and he probably doesn't have NFL features in his eyes right now, so he could probably stay a long time.
- 10:03SPEAKER_01: So I'm excited to see what he can do with this team going forward.
- 10:07SPEAKER_01: I bet I bet he will be challenging for the starting position, starting next, uh maybe not next season, but the season after that, even.
- 10:13SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I mean, depending on you know, Shuck and what he decides to do.
- 10:16SPEAKER_02: And I think this is Columbia's last year anyway, so he's he's done after this.
- 10:20SPEAKER_02: But yeah, it'll definitely be uh something something interesting to see uh that quarterback situation moving forward because I know Baron Morton is you know, he's a guy that everybody likes here.
- 10:31SPEAKER_02: He's a low semi-local from Abilene, I believe.
- 10:34SPEAKER_02: So uh, and four star, you know, you love to see the stars by the name and everything like that.
- 10:38SPEAKER_02: But uh, you know, Donovan Smith's looked better and better each week, and that's something to be proud of, no doubt.
- 10:46SPEAKER_01: Absolutely.
- 10:47SPEAKER_01: So the quarterback situation is good, and we always we kind of forgot about Chuck, unfortunately.
- 10:52SPEAKER_01: You know, it's just uh just a completely unfortunate injury that's taken him out of the season.
- 10:57SPEAKER_01: I really wish we could have had him.
- 10:58SPEAKER_01: Who knows how uh maybe these other offensive games could have looked a little better with him in it, but no need to dwell on it.
- 11:03SPEAKER_01: There's still some time for him to come back and get going.
- 11:06SPEAKER_01: Uh, but let's talk about the defense, you know.
- 11:08SPEAKER_01: Like I said before, uh, we went ahead and pretty much shut this Kansas team out, which is a good sign.
- 11:13SPEAKER_01: Yes, Kansas is terrible, but we've let other terrible teams score plenty on us.
- 11:17SPEAKER_01: So I'm excited to see the defense put it together, you know, to play well.
- 11:21SPEAKER_01: They didn't they didn't really blow much of anything.
- 11:24SPEAKER_01: So they did what they we they did what they're supposed to do and got it done.
- 11:27SPEAKER_02: We got Reggie Pearson back, which was nice.
- 11:30SPEAKER_02: He's uh uh obviously hard-hitting safety uh coming in.
- 11:33SPEAKER_02: He played a good game.
- 11:34SPEAKER_02: Devin Drew played a great game on the on the uh defensive line there.
- 11:37SPEAKER_02: He had some big run stops.
- 11:39SPEAKER_02: They they couldn't run the ball pretty much all day on us.
- 11:42SPEAKER_02: Um Jalen Hutchings was good on that end.
- 11:44SPEAKER_02: And uh Dadrian Taylor, Rabbit, was fantastic.
- 11:47SPEAKER_02: Uh caught the lone interception for us, but he honestly could should have had three, but uh, you know, he he played great.
- 11:54SPEAKER_02: Um, he's looking more and more like a like a future star or a future stud there in the uh in the backfield for us.
- 12:02SPEAKER_02: So um, yeah, I mean, I you know, they they scored those 14 points in garbage time when all of our reserves were in.
- 12:08SPEAKER_02: But uh, you know, you take I'll I'll take that all day, no doubt.
- 12:12SPEAKER_02: I mean, it was 41-0 with a minute left in this ball game.
- 12:15SPEAKER_02: So I'll I'll gladly take that.
- 12:18SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and it was also a great showing from our uh our linebackers as well, which we come to expect.
- 12:23SPEAKER_01: Glad to see they they pulled their weight.
- 12:24SPEAKER_01: You know, we count on them for so much just because we know how good they are.
- 12:27SPEAKER_01: But I think we could probably wrap a bow on this one.
- 12:31SPEAKER_01: You know, Matt Wells went and got it done.
- 12:32SPEAKER_01: He went and did what he was supposed to do.
- 12:35SPEAKER_01: He cooled off his room ever so slightly uh with this win because you know, if had had this not gone his way, he may not be coach at Texas Tech right now.
- 12:45SPEAKER_01: So this is a good one to get our for our team to get their head right because we have a huge game coming up in a couple days here.
- 12:52SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and we'll talk about that Kansas State game here in a second, but wanted to touch on some around the Big 12, some of the other uh recapping some of the other games that happened this week around the Big 12, uh, to keep y'all updated with that.
- 13:04SPEAKER_02: So we'll start here.
- 13:05SPEAKER_02: Baylor defeating future conference made BYU, uh 38 to 24, dude.
- 13:11SPEAKER_02: Baylor is looking more impressive by the week.
- 13:14SPEAKER_02: Uh, they are definitely a scary team.
- 13:16SPEAKER_02: Uh, Gary, Jerry Bohan, Gary Bohanan, whatever it is, uh, he looks he looks really good.
- 13:21SPEAKER_02: He looks like one of the top four, three or four quarterbacks in the Big 12 right now.
- 13:26SPEAKER_02: Uh, they have a really solid run game, good defense.
- 13:29SPEAKER_02: I mean, and they beat a good BYU team.
- 13:31SPEAKER_02: So uh, you know, Baylor's looking better and better, and now they're bowl eligible, six and one, man.
- 13:36SPEAKER_01: Yeah, Dave Aranda's Bears are no joke.
- 13:38SPEAKER_01: They uh very impressed and very jealous of this turnaround that they've been able to accomplish in just a year or two.
- 13:44SPEAKER_01: It's it's very impressive.
- 13:45SPEAKER_01: That guy is gonna be a hot name in the college football scene here.
- 13:49SPEAKER_01: Um, and it's kind of funny to see BYU, the fruit teacher of Big 12 mate, come and play one of their first games here in the Big 12 with that in their head.
- 13:58SPEAKER_01: Um, it was cool to see Baylor host them, put on a great hosting for them, you know, handing them all this Big 12 stuff and like decorating their suites with BYU Big 12 stuff.
- 14:07SPEAKER_01: And I bet BYU is like, okay, maybe the Big 12 is a little different than the pack teams we've been playing.
- 14:14SPEAKER_01: So yeah, I it was kind of nice to see that.
- 14:16SPEAKER_01: Like, obviously, you know, I'm I I don't cheer against BYU, and I was probably cheering for them over Baylor in this game, but uh it is cool to see that the level of competition that they're they're gonna be playing here is clearly superior to the pack 12.
- 14:28SPEAKER_01: So that that's good to see in general, and a great win for the Bears, you know, beating a ranked team, even if it was at home, it's just it's it's impressive here in Dave Viranda's year too.
- 14:37SPEAKER_02: Yeah, absolutely.
- 14:38SPEAKER_02: Dave Viranda looking like uh really hot name out there.
- 14:41SPEAKER_02: There's some there's some head coaching openings right now here now with uh with old coach O ending it at uh ending the uh relationship there with LSU, gonna be uh gonna be a free agent after this year.
- 14:54SPEAKER_02: USC's got an opening.
- 14:56SPEAKER_01: I don't know, they may be looking at Dave Aranda, and there might be a connection to Dave Aranda to LSU as well.
- 15:03SPEAKER_01: Maybe apparently, but apparently they like big showy names.
- 15:07SPEAKER_01: I don't know if uh if uh Dave Aranda's big showy enough yet.
- 15:11SPEAKER_01: And there's probably quite the contract to buy out at Baylor in just a year or two.
- 15:14SPEAKER_01: So we'll have to see how that unfolds.
- 15:16SPEAKER_01: What else we got to talk about here?
- 15:17SPEAKER_02: We got Iowa State, K-State next.
- 15:20SPEAKER_02: Iowa State taking this one 33 to 20.
- 15:22SPEAKER_02: Uh K-State, of course, is who we are playing coming up.
- 15:25SPEAKER_02: So this is pretty significant.
- 15:27SPEAKER_02: Iowa State only won by 13, but uh apparently it was you know a much worse beatdown than that.
- 15:33SPEAKER_02: Uh Brees Hall looks elite.
- 15:35SPEAKER_02: Uh, you know, Brock Purdy's looking better and better.
- 15:37SPEAKER_02: It's it's Brocktober, so you know, this is when he turns it on every year.
- 15:41SPEAKER_02: But uh yeah, this is a big win.
- 15:42SPEAKER_02: Kansas State now winless, or I guess remaining winless in conference.
- 15:47SPEAKER_02: Um, so after a pretty good start, you know, a convincing win over Stanford, K-State has really teetered.
- 15:54SPEAKER_01: Yeah, absolutely.
- 15:55SPEAKER_01: And looks like Iowa State's finally putting themselves back together after a rocky start.
- 15:59SPEAKER_01: This Kansas State team is reeling, but this Iowa State team is putting itself back together.
- 16:04SPEAKER_01: So uh it kind of shows the truth, probably the projection that these teams are going to go in.
- 16:07SPEAKER_01: And it was kind of surprising.
- 16:08SPEAKER_01: Everyone was thinking Kansas State was going to be a team to watch in the Big 12 with how good their uh out of conference was, but we'll talk about that more in a second.
- 16:14SPEAKER_01: Um, what else we got here?
- 16:16SPEAKER_02: We got OU taking down the fighting Gary Patterson Horn Frogs 52-31.
- 16:22SPEAKER_02: Caleb Williams starting his first game for Oklahoma.
- 16:26SPEAKER_02: He's looking like he's he's the guy.
- 16:28SPEAKER_02: I mean, they uh they've officially uh put Spencer Rattler in the back burner, and Caleb Williams is the guy moving forward, and uh they took care of business against TCU, man.
- 16:38SPEAKER_01: And he's already getting Heisman talk.
- 16:40SPEAKER_01: I nearly barfed last night from seeing that on the television.
- 16:44SPEAKER_01: It's like, guys, we're halfway through the season.
- 16:46SPEAKER_01: You don't have to talk about OU's quarterback like they're a Heisman every single time, but yeah, he's the guy.
- 16:50SPEAKER_01: They obviously got to go forward him.
- 16:52SPEAKER_01: And Spencer Rattler's already like removing OU from his bios and stuff.
- 16:55SPEAKER_01: So looks like he might be on the move.
- 16:57SPEAKER_01: And Oklahoma's still looking the favorite Big 12 the part.
- 17:00SPEAKER_01: So there's TCU's defense is kind of you know fluctuating here.
- 17:05SPEAKER_01: It's then TCU's looking at a disappointing seven season, even though they put a beating on us, but still it looks like Oklahoma's back to it.
- 17:12SPEAKER_01: Business as usual.
- 17:14SPEAKER_02: SMU quarterback Spencer Rattler uh put on the bench for right now.
- 17:19SPEAKER_02: So I don't know, man.
- 17:20SPEAKER_02: I don't know what he's gonna do.
- 17:21SPEAKER_02: Uh, but Caleb Williams is clearly the guy, he's looked fantastic.
- 17:25SPEAKER_02: Beat beat uh in the comeback win against UT and now beaten TCU by a good amount.
- 17:30SPEAKER_02: Uh, unfortunately, we have to play him play them here in two weeks, so we'll see how that goes.
- 17:35SPEAKER_02: But uh, yeah, moving on.
- 17:37SPEAKER_02: Oklahoma State taking down the Longhorns 32 to 24 in another comeback L for Texas.
- 17:45SPEAKER_02: You love to see it, it's fantastic.
- 17:47SPEAKER_02: Coach Sark already getting uh the fan base riled up.
- 17:51SPEAKER_02: It's great, man.
- 17:52SPEAKER_01: These cowboys are the truth.
- 17:54SPEAKER_01: They're they look so good right now.
- 17:56SPEAKER_01: Their defense looks quietly phenomenal, even if their offense isn't spectacular, their defense is putting them straight into the conversation, and that's scary.
- 18:05SPEAKER_01: We still haven't played them yet.
- 18:06SPEAKER_01: But I do love that they came and crushed UT and Daryl K.
- 18:10SPEAKER_01: Like their hopes were just shattered at the very end once more.
- 18:13SPEAKER_01: And man, it just shows that Texas is absolutely SEC ready.
- 18:17SPEAKER_01: I mean, losing to you know, losing to a Big 12 team is no shame, Texas.
- 18:21SPEAKER_01: Don't worry about it, but love, love seeing it, Cal folks.
- 18:25SPEAKER_02: Yeah, no, really good win.
- 18:27SPEAKER_02: Um, I'm st I'm still not there with Oklahoma State yet.
- 18:30SPEAKER_02: They've uh obviously they're undefeated, they're a top 10 team in the nation.
- 18:33SPEAKER_02: Uh, their defense is phenomenal.
- 18:35SPEAKER_02: That's what's been carrying them all season.
- 18:37SPEAKER_02: Jalen Warren is the truth at running back, he's fantastic, but I'm not a Spencer Sanders guy.
- 18:43SPEAKER_02: I think he's serviceable, he's worked so far, but I think they're beatable.
- 18:48SPEAKER_02: And I think when they play OU, I and even you're seeing that with Vegas right now.
- 18:52SPEAKER_02: Iowa State's favored by seven in their game this week in the Oklahoma State, Iowa State game.
- 18:56SPEAKER_02: And I know it's uh it's in aims, but uh, you know, that kind of tells you that Vegas isn't really buying Oklahoma State either.
- 19:03SPEAKER_02: So we'll see, man.
- 19:04SPEAKER_02: We'll see with them.
- 19:06SPEAKER_01: Absolutely.
- 19:07SPEAKER_01: So I think that wraps it up on the Big 12.
- 19:09SPEAKER_01: A pretty interesting weekend, you know, seeing some teams break out and some teams fall further back.
- 19:14SPEAKER_01: So it's that the the season's definitely coming to a full picture here.
- 19:18SPEAKER_02: Yeah, no doubt.
- 19:19SPEAKER_02: Uh Cincy did beat UCF.
- 19:20SPEAKER_02: That is another future conference mates coming in.
- 19:24SPEAKER_02: Uh, they killed them 56-21, not much to talk about.
- 19:26SPEAKER_02: Cincinnati's fantastic.
- 19:27SPEAKER_02: UCF kind of having a down year, but you know.
- 19:30SPEAKER_02: Number two, Cincinnati, bro.
- 19:33SPEAKER_02: That is true.
- 19:33SPEAKER_02: Number two.
- 19:34SPEAKER_02: They're in a prime position, man.
- 19:35SPEAKER_02: If they keep winning these games like they're winning, Cincy is gonna see themselves in a playoff spot.
- 19:40SPEAKER_02: But yeah, they I mean, you know, UCF kind of having a down year.
- 19:45SPEAKER_02: Absolutely.
- 19:47SPEAKER_02: But uh West Virginia and Houston both had buys this week, so uh we'll get back talking about them after this week's slate of games.
- 19:54SPEAKER_02: But that's gonna do it, man.
- 19:55SPEAKER_02: That's around the Big 12.
- 19:57SPEAKER_02: Um, a lot of craziness as usual.
- 19:59SPEAKER_02: Uh UT losing, so it's a good, it's a good week.
- 20:01SPEAKER_02: Tech win, UT loss.
- 20:03SPEAKER_02: It's a good week.
- 20:04SPEAKER_01: Yeah, we'll take those any day.
- 20:06SPEAKER_01: Hey, it's ECU loss too.
- 20:07SPEAKER_01: We'll throw that in there too.
- 20:08SPEAKER_02: There you go, throw that one in there.
- 20:10SPEAKER_02: But uh, let's get into the talk and tech breakdown where we discuss some of the other sports around campus that you normally don't hear about, but we do need to start Big 12 Media Day for basketball.
- 20:20SPEAKER_02: I know we just had an hour and a half long basketball preview that you can go listen to, but we just had media day for the women's and the men's.
- 20:30SPEAKER_02: Uh Krista Gerlich and Vivian Gray were the representatives for tech for the women's basketball.
- 20:34SPEAKER_02: For men's, it was Mark Adams and Kevin McCullough.
- 20:37SPEAKER_02: Uh, some interesting stuff takeaway from Media Day.
- 20:40SPEAKER_02: I thought um uh coach Adams was, you know, very uh he's he's he's a calm guy, he's a reserved guy.
- 20:46SPEAKER_02: You know, he's he's not gonna reveal too much.
- 20:48SPEAKER_02: He was sincere and honest on all these questions, not much was asked from him, but um, you know, it was kind of interesting seeing him and Beard in the same room for the first time.
- 20:59SPEAKER_01: It was man, Mark Adams had a big old smile on his face the whole time.
- 21:02SPEAKER_01: He just seems like just such a genuine dude.
- 21:04SPEAKER_01: Like, that's the best word you can use for him.
- 21:06SPEAKER_01: You know, he he just loves talking to the to the media heads and being honest about how he feels about all of it.
- 21:12SPEAKER_01: I know he warmed all of our hearts with what with what he was saying about Texas Tech and Lubbock and what he thinks about his team.
- 21:17SPEAKER_01: So it was all great on our side.
- 21:18SPEAKER_01: Definitely we all expected exactly what he was going to say, but it's still good to hear.
- 21:22SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it was definitely a refreshing uh kind of twist to what we're normally getting from the used car salesman to now a real genuine dude who just loves Lubbock, loves West Texas, and is is an alumni, and and he's a guy that we want at the helm through and through.
- 21:38SPEAKER_02: So that was nice to see.
- 21:39SPEAKER_02: Kevin McCullough was great, answered some awesome questions uh from Fran Fraschilla and those type of guys that were covering the day.
- 21:46SPEAKER_02: So uh K Mac's a great representative for tech, man.
- 21:49SPEAKER_02: He's uh he's well spoken, he really just gets you hyped up for the season.
- 21:53SPEAKER_02: So I'm ready, dude.
- 21:54SPEAKER_02: I'm ready.
- 21:54SPEAKER_01: No, me too, man.
- 21:56SPEAKER_01: It was so cool to hear him talk about his teammates and what he thinks about Texas Tech and Like we just used the word genuine for Mark Adams.
- 22:02SPEAKER_01: And I think that's just really rubbed off on K Mac.
- 22:04SPEAKER_01: I know that's also who K Mac is, but it's just cool to see those two work so well together.
- 22:08SPEAKER_01: You can definitely tell that they're quite the duo.
- 22:10SPEAKER_01: You know, he's he's the leader of the team, and Coach Adams is obviously the captain, the head coach, you know.
- 22:15SPEAKER_01: So it's they're a great duo.
- 22:17SPEAKER_01: They represented us well, proud to see us there.
- 22:20SPEAKER_01: Um, and it was funny seeing uh country club Chris with his like look like a frown on his face the whole damn time.
- 22:25SPEAKER_01: What the hell is that about?
- 22:27SPEAKER_02: He's trying to act hard.
- 22:28SPEAKER_02: He's uh he's trying to act like he's a hard, you know.
- 22:31SPEAKER_02: Uh it was it was funny.
- 22:32SPEAKER_02: It was funny seeing that picture where only him and the Iowa State coach were not smiling because they both hate their jobs at this point.
- 22:39SPEAKER_02: Uh, but but we did get at least one confirmation from Big 12 Media Day.
- 22:44SPEAKER_02: Kevin McCullough will be playing point guard from his mouth.
- 22:47SPEAKER_02: Uh, he said he's he's ready for it.
- 22:49SPEAKER_02: He played it in high school and he's ready to play for it now, uh, under Coach Adams.
- 22:53SPEAKER_02: So that was cool to see.
- 22:54SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it'll be interesting to see him as the main ball handler.
- 22:57SPEAKER_01: So uh he's it's good to see him, you know, be a captain on the court as well.
- 23:00SPEAKER_01: So hopefully he can fit into the role well and uh make some plays because it's got definitely gonna be expected of him now.
- 23:06SPEAKER_02: So yeah, no doubt.
- 23:08SPEAKER_02: So moving on uh to some Texas Texas soccer, we got a dub in Ames against Iowa State, two to one.
- 23:17SPEAKER_02: It was a comeback effort, it was really fun.
- 23:19SPEAKER_02: I actually tuned into most of this game, uh got to see the comeback.
- 23:23SPEAKER_02: We were down 0-1 in the second half, and then we saw Kristen Davis, of course, scoring, tying up the game, and then Giselle Kazarski taking the lead with I believe it was like five minutes left in the game, uh, hit it in the goal, and then we take the win on and away game.
- 23:40SPEAKER_02: It was really cool to see for the ladies.
- 23:42SPEAKER_01: That's what I'm talking about, boy.
- 23:44SPEAKER_01: And he I knew it was like, well, I just I'm just waiting for the Kristen Davis remark.
- 23:48SPEAKER_01: You know, it's like how many did she score this time?
- 23:50SPEAKER_01: That that girl is a stud.
- 23:52SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that that woman is a scoring machine.
- 23:55SPEAKER_01: So I'm glad that she's a machine for us.
- 23:58SPEAKER_02: I think she scored her 109th career goal this game.
- 24:02SPEAKER_02: So goodness, she's she's out here.
- 24:04SPEAKER_02: You can always count on her uh getting out in transition and and finding that ball in the goal.
- 24:09SPEAKER_02: So uh up next, we have Kansas at home for senior day.
- 24:13SPEAKER_02: So shouts out to all the seniors uh that have been with this program for a long time and always repping the red and black.
- 24:19SPEAKER_02: Gotta love it uh for the soccer team.
- 24:22SPEAKER_01: Absolutely.
- 24:23SPEAKER_01: Ladies, keep it up.
- 24:25SPEAKER_02: No doubt.
- 24:25SPEAKER_02: Moving on to volleyball.
- 24:27SPEAKER_02: We split the series with OU in Norman one to one.
- 24:30SPEAKER_02: OU won the first match in five sets, which has become a theme of this year.
- 24:35SPEAKER_02: We've been going to five sets a lot, uh, but then we really showed him who's boss in the second set, uh, or in the second match, I should say, where we swept them three three sets to nothing.
- 24:45SPEAKER_02: So uh took care of business in Norman.
- 24:48SPEAKER_02: Uh, you know, you'd you'd like to come out with both wins, but uh, you know, a good response from the ladies.
- 24:53SPEAKER_01: Everyone knows the second game is the most important one.
- 24:55SPEAKER_01: So I'm glad we we we won the one that matters.
- 24:58SPEAKER_01: But hey, hey, hey, if you're gonna lose, at least take them down on the wire.
- 25:01SPEAKER_01: So it's good to hear we always do that.
- 25:03SPEAKER_02: Yeah, no doubt.
- 25:04SPEAKER_02: So up next, we have a two-match series at K State.
- 25:08SPEAKER_02: So football team and the volleyball team both going up against the Wildcats this week.
- 25:13SPEAKER_02: Uh, moving on to women's golf, finished fifth in the Jim West Classic.
- 25:18SPEAKER_02: Doesn't look like they're gonna play again until February.
- 25:20SPEAKER_02: So nice little fall, uh, fall set for the golf team.
- 25:25SPEAKER_02: Uh, same with the men's, except they had a great finish, finished second in the Big 12 match play tournament, including beating number one Oklahoma in their set.
- 25:35SPEAKER_02: They lost in the championship to Texas, but we don't like to talk about that.
- 25:39SPEAKER_02: But big time performance finishing second in the Big 12.
- 25:42SPEAKER_02: Gotta love it for the guys.
- 25:44SPEAKER_01: Dang, a lot to look forward to because the Big 12 is a very good golf conference.
- 25:48SPEAKER_01: It really is.
- 25:49SPEAKER_01: There's a lot of big golf schools here.
- 25:50SPEAKER_01: So it's good to see us make a statement here in the fall and then go and really get it in the spring.
- 25:55SPEAKER_02: Yeah, absolutely.
- 25:56SPEAKER_02: So look out for more golf stuff come February.
- 25:59SPEAKER_02: But that's gonna do it, man, for the talk and tech breakdown.
- 26:02SPEAKER_02: Always support the other sports going on around campus.
- 26:06SPEAKER_02: Let's move on to Kansas State, though.
- 26:08SPEAKER_02: We have a really crucial game for Matt Wells.
- 26:12SPEAKER_02: Uh, we have a rough stretch to end the season, man.
- 26:16SPEAKER_02: We are Kansas State at home, we are at Oklahoma.
- 26:20SPEAKER_02: Uh, we have Oklahoma State at home, we are we have Iowa State at home, and then we go to Baylor.
- 26:26SPEAKER_02: So it's a really, really tough ender to the season for tech.
- 26:31SPEAKER_02: It's looking like this is gonna be our best chance at that sixth and uh bowl eligible win here against Kansas State.
- 26:38SPEAKER_01: Yep, and uh we have opened up as a one-point favorite.
- 26:41SPEAKER_01: People were saying that the Kansas game was probably gonna be the last game we're gonna be favored in all year.
- 26:45SPEAKER_01: So it turns out that people have a little more faith in us than the Kansas State Wildcats.
- 26:49SPEAKER_01: I think that just highlights about how important getting this win will be uh to get you to six wins and then go into the gauntlet and hopefully try to sneak at least one more, you know, just to really make the season feel so much better.
- 27:03SPEAKER_01: But this game is so crucial, you know.
- 27:05SPEAKER_01: Uh Ryan touched on it last uh episode, and I really liked it.
- 27:09SPEAKER_01: He said that this is probably the most important game of Matt Wells's career.
- 27:13SPEAKER_01: And I think I probably have to agree.
- 27:15SPEAKER_01: Uh, Matt Wells has never won two Big 12 games in a row.
- 27:18SPEAKER_01: And the issue here is does Kansas really count about stacking that success?
- 27:24SPEAKER_01: Because Kansas is just something you have to win.
- 27:26SPEAKER_01: It's expected, you are, you know, out of here if you lose to Kansas, no matter what Big 12 school you're at.
- 27:33SPEAKER_01: So it hardly feels like it counts.
- 27:35SPEAKER_01: It's only technicality only if we won this in against K State, where you win two Big 12 games in a row.
- 27:39SPEAKER_01: But you know, we'll take anything at this point with stacking success.
- 27:43SPEAKER_01: So at least Kansas State somewhere somewhere good to, I mean, Kansas is a good place to start, but we really gotta go and win this Kansas State game.
- 27:49SPEAKER_01: If we don't win this Kansas State game, it it kind of confirms a lot of people's suspicions about Matt Wells going for the rest of the season, I think.
- 27:57SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I mean, you talk to a Kansas State fan, they're saying Tech's gonna win by 20.
- 28:01SPEAKER_02: If you talk to a Texas Tech fan, they're gonna say Kansas State's gonna win by 20 because both fan bases are extremely down on their football programs right now.
- 28:09SPEAKER_02: Uh Kansas State's teetering, though.
- 28:11SPEAKER_02: They've lost three in a row.
- 28:12SPEAKER_02: Uh, they are 0-3 in the Big 12.
- 28:14SPEAKER_02: Uh, we are, I think, currently two and two in the Big 12, so we have a better record.
- 28:18SPEAKER_02: Uh, but uh yeah, Kansas State is it's it's been rough.
- 28:22SPEAKER_02: I know they've been without Skylar Thompson for a lot of the season due to injury.
- 28:26SPEAKER_02: He is back for this game.
- 28:28SPEAKER_02: So uh another weapon that he you know always he always finds a way to win some big games.
- 28:33SPEAKER_02: I mean, he's beat OU two of the last three years, and uh yeah, it's it's tough out here.
- 28:39SPEAKER_02: Kansas State, um, they're they're either gonna come out really hungry for a win or they're kind of down on themselves and maybe teetering off here.
- 28:47SPEAKER_01: I like that you brought up the fans because yes, they are upset at their their their football program, but Texas Tech fans are actually more mad.
- 28:56SPEAKER_01: Matt Wells's seat is hotter than Chris Kleiman's.
- 28:59SPEAKER_01: So it's this is definitely a more important game for Matt Wells, even though we have the better record both in and out of conference.
- 29:06SPEAKER_01: So it's it's gonna be interesting to see how these two clash against each other.
- 29:09SPEAKER_01: And like you, you brought up Schuyler Thompson as back.
- 29:11SPEAKER_01: Uh, he's he's been a proven workhorse for them.
- 29:14SPEAKER_01: You know, he he gets the job done for them.
- 29:16SPEAKER_01: You know, he he doesn't exactly light up the stat board, but he does everything you want him to do.
- 29:21SPEAKER_01: You know, he's he's definitely the the leader on that team that really makes the offense move up the field.
- 29:26SPEAKER_01: So uh locking him down will definitely be important, but they also have a great running game with Don uh Deuce Wan.
- 29:32SPEAKER_01: So it is surprising to see them doing so badly in the Big 12, especially with how well they started in at a conference, and they went three and oh to start off the season, and it was against good teams.
- 29:42SPEAKER_01: You know, they go and beat Stanford in at a neutral site game, and Stanford's been up and down.
- 29:48SPEAKER_01: Stanford has beaten a top five Oregon, even so uh, but they've also lost some weird games as well.
- 29:54SPEAKER_01: Uh, and then Kansas State also beats Nevada, a strong Mountain West team right now.
- 29:58SPEAKER_01: So it's it's weird how they've fallen off.
- 30:00SPEAKER_01: Maybe just the level of competition in the Big 12 has been higher, but I I don't know if that makes me feel more comfortable in the game or thinking that maybe they're gonna try to return to form against us, you know what I mean?
- 30:11SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 30:11SPEAKER_02: I mean, I hope it's uh I hope it's just kind of eating at them and they just you know keep getting worse and worse.
- 30:18SPEAKER_02: But uh yeah, I mean, they're significantly better when Skylar Thompson is on the field, though.
- 30:22SPEAKER_02: He really is a leader, he's an experienced guy who has been there a long time, been in college football a long time.
- 30:28SPEAKER_02: So uh obviously that's an issue.
- 30:30SPEAKER_02: They only lost by six to Oklahoma this season with him at the helm.
- 30:34SPEAKER_02: Uh, you know, they lost by a couple scores to Iowa State with him there.
- 30:37SPEAKER_02: But uh yeah, he's he's a run threat and he's a great passer.
- 30:41SPEAKER_02: Uh, but the real the real effect on this offense is Deuce Vaughn, like you mentioned.
- 30:46SPEAKER_02: Uh, dude is electric.
- 30:47SPEAKER_02: He is um he he's a pat or he's a rushing threat, he's a receiving threat.
- 30:52SPEAKER_02: He does it all.
- 30:53SPEAKER_02: He had a great game against tech last year, and he's just having a great season.
- 30:56SPEAKER_02: He's a fantastic player.
- 30:57SPEAKER_02: Uh, I'm worried about him.
- 30:59SPEAKER_01: Absolutely.
- 31:00SPEAKER_01: I mean, our our rushing defense has been terrible, especially in the losses.
- 31:04SPEAKER_01: Our rushing defense was abysmal, and we got just absolutely gouged by good running backs.
- 31:09SPEAKER_01: And guess what?
- 31:10SPEAKER_01: Bis von good running back.
- 31:12SPEAKER_01: So that obviously is going to scare you because we've we get absolutely clobbered by these runners.
- 31:18SPEAKER_01: So that that definitely makes me worried.
- 31:21SPEAKER_01: Uh, I really do hope we box them up there, but it's it's kind of difficult to see where the defense should focus their energy.
- 31:29SPEAKER_01: Is it on the run game or should we try to be trying to get to the quarterback?
- 31:33SPEAKER_01: It just obviously Keith Patterson is the is the one that's uh paid to do well to do this.
- 31:38SPEAKER_01: Uh, and this is a big game for him as well.
- 31:40SPEAKER_01: You know, this may be what decides his career.
- 31:43SPEAKER_01: What do you think?
- 31:45SPEAKER_02: Uh yeah, I mean, it depending on how this game goes.
- 31:48SPEAKER_02: I'm not sure if I'm gonna jump to like this is you know gonna depend on uh whether he's fired or not for this game.
- 31:54SPEAKER_02: But uh, I mean, you really, if you're going into this game and you're Keith Patterson, you're saying, Hey, I need to have Colin Schooler or some linebacker on Deuce Vaughn at all times.
- 32:05SPEAKER_02: I mean, they don't have a lot of wide receiver threats, they have some decent wide receivers, but they don't have a guy who's like overly amazing.
- 32:12SPEAKER_02: So uh Deuce Vaughn is where they kill you on offense.
- 32:16SPEAKER_02: So you get one of those guys basically as a spy on Deuce Vaughn.
- 32:20SPEAKER_02: I mean, you know, Skylar Thompson can get out and run on his own, but uh that's that's just the threat that those two provide.
- 32:25SPEAKER_02: But outside of that, there's not much of a threat on the offensive side of the field.
- 32:29SPEAKER_02: So um, you know, I think you get Deuce Vaughn taken care of, and and we've seen both sides of it this season.
- 32:35SPEAKER_02: I mean, we've seen us do horrible against certain running backs in Bijan Robinson and Zach Evans, but we've also shut down Letty Brown pretty pretty well.
- 32:44SPEAKER_02: So I know West Virginia's West Virginia hasn't had a good start to the season, but Letty Brown is still a pretty good running back, so uh you know, I hope we see that Texas Tech and not the Texas Tech that played TCU and and UT.
- 32:57SPEAKER_01: Yeah, 100%.
- 32:59SPEAKER_01: So that that definitely has to be the the the plan of attack is going after Deuce Vaughn.
- 33:03SPEAKER_01: Um, but uh you know, I actually feel pretty good about this game.
- 33:08SPEAKER_01: I think that you know Henry Columbi can probably do be do okay against this defense.
- 33:13SPEAKER_01: It this obviously isn't just a rock star defense right now that we're gonna be going up against, so um plenty of teams that put 30 on them.
- 33:21SPEAKER_01: So uh it's gonna be interesting to see what kind of move we take on them, but I do feel pretty good.
- 33:27SPEAKER_01: How are you feeling?
- 33:28SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I think I feel okay.
- 33:30SPEAKER_02: Uh, I I don't feel I'm not gonna feel tremendous about this team moving forward because I just don't know what team's gonna actually show up.
- 33:36SPEAKER_02: Is it gonna be the two in the two losses that were awful, or is it gonna be uh, you know, second half Houston or uh West Virginia or you know that type of Texas tech?
- 33:46SPEAKER_02: So um I I I'm not gonna say I feel good, but I also don't feel horrible.
- 33:51SPEAKER_02: I think it's a pretty good chance to get this sixth win, to get bull eligible, to get to six and two, which is a really, really good record.
- 34:00SPEAKER_02: And if you told me before the season that we would be six and two, I would have been ecstatic.
- 34:04SPEAKER_02: So I know there's context behind that and everything with with the two horrible losses and the way we lost them.
- 34:10SPEAKER_02: But um, you know, I think this is a really good opportunity for Matt Wells and for the team to stack success.
- 34:16SPEAKER_02: Like he keeps preaching, like he wants and and I saw a clear difference in the press conferences with Matt Wells after the West Virginia win, and then after this win.
- 34:25SPEAKER_02: You know, he was much more happy and cheery after the West Virginia win.
- 34:29SPEAKER_02: Like, hey, you know, we just went and won that freaking thing.
- 34:32SPEAKER_02: You know, we're hyped up after the Kansas win.
- 34:34SPEAKER_02: He's like, okay, we're back to work.
- 34:36SPEAKER_02: We got to win this one, stack success.
- 34:38SPEAKER_02: It's something we haven't been able to do.
- 34:39SPEAKER_02: And that's what I've that's what the attitude I want to see from the coaching staff.
- 34:44SPEAKER_01: 100%.
- 34:45SPEAKER_01: Like it needs to be all business from here.
- 34:47SPEAKER_01: Like, you got to be fighting for your job because it's absolutely on the line.
- 34:50SPEAKER_01: And I do think that this game will tell the story.
- 34:53SPEAKER_01: I think if you lose this game, the rest of the season looks pretty dark because you'll be good, you're gonna be playing a lot of really good teams from then on out.
- 35:01SPEAKER_01: This is the last one where you're playing a team that is probably worse than you.
- 35:05SPEAKER_01: They we're talking about a team that hasn't won a single game in the Big 12, and we have we absolutely get to say that right now.
- 35:10SPEAKER_01: So it's it's gonna be very important for him.
- 35:13SPEAKER_01: I really do hope that next week we'll be talking about a Texas Tech team that's six and two, and probably talking about it we'll we'll officially be bowling at that point, and we'll probably be talking about a team that's probably gonna retain their coaching staff for another year.
- 35:25SPEAKER_01: So I wonder if a lot of Matt Wells haters are gonna be wanting this to be an L.
- 35:29SPEAKER_01: But uh not.
- 35:31SPEAKER_01: I hope not, but uh it's uh I understand the frustration with the coaching staff 100, but uh obviously I would never root for a loss.
- 35:38SPEAKER_01: But this is very important.
- 35:40SPEAKER_01: I don't know how much else I can say about this other than it's it's a must-win.
- 35:46SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I mean, you you mentioned it with the final four teams.
- 35:48SPEAKER_02: I mean, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Baylor, and Iowa State are either currently ranked or have been ranked this season.
- 35:55SPEAKER_02: So uh, you know, that's that's four really tough opponents to end the season on.
- 35:59SPEAKER_02: Um, and it, I mean, this is gonna be your best shot at getting that sixth win.
- 36:03SPEAKER_02: So uh I I I said it in the in the basketball preview when we started talking about football briefly, but I just have this weird feeling that Matt Wells is gonna pull a few of these games out of his butt and and uh you know we're actually gonna end up with a pretty decent record, and tech fans are still gonna be furious because Matt Wells is gonna remain here.
- 36:22SPEAKER_02: Like you said, though, we never cheer for losses over here, we always root for wins.
- 36:27SPEAKER_02: If we win, we're happy.
- 36:29SPEAKER_01: So yeah, I I love that attitude.
- 36:32SPEAKER_01: I love that you think we're gonna just come up and snipe a couple because I'm here for it, man.
- 36:37SPEAKER_01: I want that to happen so so badly, and I really do think if we get uh seven regular season wins, I think the fan base is pretty happy.
- 36:44SPEAKER_01: I think you have to be pretty unreasonable to be mad about that.
- 36:47SPEAKER_01: So, um, I mean, I you can honestly have an opinion about it.
- 36:50SPEAKER_01: I'm not saying you're you're silly or anything like that, but I think being satisfied with seven wins is absolutely okay because then you can look to the future with with a brighter season ahead, so especially with the way you're developing your players and some of these recruits that are coming in.
- 37:03SPEAKER_01: So uh, but man, I hey, I feel good about taking on the Wildcats this season.
- 37:08SPEAKER_01: It's they have had our number, and if we're gonna get them now's the time.
- 37:12SPEAKER_01: They've they've just absolutely punched us in the face every game this decade.
- 37:16SPEAKER_01: So I'm ready for us to return the favor for once.
- 37:18SPEAKER_01: And this is a program I always look at and say, why are we not at least as good as Kansas State?
- 37:24SPEAKER_01: You know, there's there's zero reason for us to be at least as good as Kansas State.
- 37:28SPEAKER_01: Obviously, not knocking on Kansas State at all.
- 37:30SPEAKER_01: I mean, and what they've done there is remarkable, their coaching hires are phenomenal, their fan support is great.
- 37:34SPEAKER_01: But what I'm saying is like the resources and the geographical advantage that Texas Tech has should at least be meeting that standard.
- 37:41SPEAKER_01: So I'm ready for us to be there, I'm ready to meet that standard and exceed it.
- 37:45SPEAKER_01: So let's go get this W uh Saturday boys.
- 37:48SPEAKER_01: Uh, it's much needed.
- 37:50SPEAKER_02: Wow, you're being a very positive media member towards Kansas State, you're like Chris Kleiman's dream right now.
- 37:59SPEAKER_01: That was weird, dude.
- 38:00SPEAKER_01: That was that was very weird.
- 38:02SPEAKER_01: If if Matt Wells did that, his house would be like egged by this point, you know.
- 38:07SPEAKER_01: Like Red Raider fans would be pissed if he said something like that.
- 38:12SPEAKER_02: Yeah, just some context.
- 38:14SPEAKER_02: In Chris Kleiman's like weekly press conference, he basically called out the media saying, Hey guys, okay, these kids are 18 to 20, they can't handle negativity.
- 38:24SPEAKER_02: We all need to try to be more positive.
- 38:26SPEAKER_02: It was weird, it was it was just something you don't say, dude.
- 38:30SPEAKER_02: Like these are athletes, they're open to criticism, just like you are.
- 38:34SPEAKER_02: Not everything is all hunky dory all the time, man.
- 38:37SPEAKER_02: So uh, yeah, that was a weird comment there.
- 38:40SPEAKER_01: Definitely a guy that's feeling the losses and doesn't really know how to react.
- 38:44SPEAKER_01: You know, it's he he this is a man that is so used to winning, and whenever he gets these sneaky wins against OU, he's obviously worshipped in Manhattan.
- 38:52SPEAKER_01: I mean, who wouldn't be?
- 38:52SPEAKER_01: It would be the same way in Lubbock.
- 38:54SPEAKER_01: So it it he goes from North Dakota State being leading an absolute dynasty to having to go to a Kansas State program where you really have to fight for your wins, nothing is given there.
- 39:05SPEAKER_01: So it's he's definitely feeling it now.
- 39:08SPEAKER_01: Um, I I understand he's probably he's a really positive guy and he likes the good vibes, but like you said, man, you're you're paid to take heat and whether you deserve it, you gotta take it.
- 39:18SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and the players are prone to it, you know.
- 39:20SPEAKER_02: It's gonna happen.
- 39:21SPEAKER_02: Like I, you know, you you don't like to crap on a college kid, but you know, it that's that's what it is.
- 39:26SPEAKER_02: That's what college athletics is.
- 39:28SPEAKER_02: You're you know, the media is gonna criticize when you're not playing well, and that you know, uh that's that's just the name of the game.
- 39:35SPEAKER_02: So it was definitely a weird comment.
- 39:36SPEAKER_02: But yeah, I I mean that I'm glad you brought that up because he really hasn't experienced a lot of losing in his career, and so I I this is just definitely a weird reaction, something that he's getting a lot of heat for.
- 39:48SPEAKER_01: Well, unfortunately, I think we might have to give him some negativity on Saturday.
- 39:52SPEAKER_01: He that the media may not be too happy with him, and I hope so.
- 39:56SPEAKER_01: Not not not not personally, but for us.
- 40:00SPEAKER_02: Chris, you seem like a great guy.
- 40:02SPEAKER_02: I want to win the game, more importantly, than uh making you feel good about yourself, my man.
- 40:08SPEAKER_01: Absolutely, man.
- 40:09SPEAKER_01: So I think I think that's a cheers to getting uh to stacking success, as Matt Wells always says.
- 40:14SPEAKER_01: It would feel so good to be talking about a 62 team, a bull eligible team.
- 40:18SPEAKER_01: Bull eligibility has been a rarity in Lubbock this past decade, and I think we'll welcome it no matter what.
- 40:24SPEAKER_01: So I'm I'm I'm definitely looking forward to 11 a.m.
- 40:27SPEAKER_02: Absolutely 11 a.m.
- 40:29SPEAKER_02: kickoff, like you mentioned Saturday, October 23rd on FS.
- 40:35SPEAKER_02: Bloody Mary's all around, ladies and gentlemen.
- 40:38SPEAKER_02: It this game is in Lubbock.
- 40:39SPEAKER_02: Uh, you mentioned we were favored, now it's a straight up pick'em.
- 40:42SPEAKER_02: So this move, yeah.
- 40:44SPEAKER_02: It's so the lions move it all over the place.
- 40:46SPEAKER_02: It started off Kansas State was uh favored by one, then it went to tech minus one, and now it's a straight up pick'em.
- 40:53SPEAKER_02: So I mean, Vegas doesn't know what the hell to do with either of these teams, and I don't blame it.
- 40:58SPEAKER_01: Uh, I don't know why you would put your money anywhere near this game.
- 41:02SPEAKER_01: Like these, these no one knows what to expect out of these two programs week to week.
- 41:06SPEAKER_02: Yeah, no doubt.
- 41:07SPEAKER_02: So uh that'll do it for Kansas State.
- 41:10SPEAKER_02: Looking forward to it.
- 41:11SPEAKER_02: Hopefully, we get start off the day with a nice little dub, and so I'm not depressed from about 2:30 on like I usually am after a tech loss.
- 41:19SPEAKER_02: But uh we already we already did Song of the Week.
- 41:23SPEAKER_02: We did that with Ryan.
- 41:24SPEAKER_02: Uh, we gave a trio of rock anthems that you can listen to on the Talk and Tech Songs of the Week playlist on Spotify and Apple Music.
- 41:32SPEAKER_02: So we're gonna do some a little different to end this episode.
- 41:35SPEAKER_02: We're gonna do another little segment called spoiler alert.
- 41:38SPEAKER_02: We're gonna talk about some of the TV shows or movies that we've seen lately that we want to recommend to you guys.
- 41:45SPEAKER_02: Uh if you haven't seen them yet, to go watch them.
- 41:47SPEAKER_02: So, Tristan, what do you uh what have you seen lately that you've had been uh been enjoying?
- 41:53SPEAKER_01: Well, you know, I I think I really gotta tip the hat.
- 41:56SPEAKER_01: Uh this I went to the movie theater for the first time in like two years because of COVID.
- 42:00SPEAKER_01: You know, I love the movie theaters, I love going to see movies, and this is the first time in a while where there's been something in there that's worth seeing to in my in my for my taste.
- 42:08SPEAKER_01: I went and saw the new James Bond movie.
- 42:10SPEAKER_01: I really like the 007 movies with Daniel Craig, and I like this conclusion movie, man.
- 42:15SPEAKER_01: And I it well, what I really enjoyed about it is finally a Hollywood blockbuster movie that's not on any streaming services.
- 42:23SPEAKER_01: You have to go to the movie theater to see it, and something about that just feels special again, first, especially for a title that big.
- 42:31SPEAKER_01: So it felt so good.
- 42:32SPEAKER_01: I really did enjoy the film.
- 42:33SPEAKER_01: I think it was a nice ending to Daniel Craig's uh James Bond, but it felt so good to support the local movie theater here, buy some popcorn and a soda, and just kick back and watch something on the big screen again.
- 42:45SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I mean, two things to respond to that.
- 42:48SPEAKER_02: One, I agree with you.
- 42:49SPEAKER_02: Going to the movies is one of my favorite things to do.
- 42:51SPEAKER_02: I will do it alone, I will do it with my fiance, I'll go with a group.
- 42:55SPEAKER_02: I love going to the movie theater.
- 42:56SPEAKER_02: I do.
- 42:56SPEAKER_02: I enjoy the whole atmosphere, the the loud sound, uh the you know, the surround sound, massive screen, everything like that.
- 43:03SPEAKER_02: I love the movie theater.
- 43:04SPEAKER_02: Um, two, I've never seen one James Bond movie in my entire life.
- 43:08SPEAKER_02: What?
- 43:08SPEAKER_02: I haven't seen one.
- 43:09SPEAKER_02: Are you kidding me?
- 43:10SPEAKER_01: I have I just haven't.
- 43:11SPEAKER_01: Go back.
- 43:12SPEAKER_01: You need to go back and start with Casino Royale.
- 43:13SPEAKER_01: You gotta watch the Daniel Craig ones.
- 43:15SPEAKER_02: Okay, it's just one of those that I like.
- 43:17SPEAKER_02: I don't know, when there's a lot of something that I haven't seen yet, it feels like too much of a burden to go back and watch because I feel like I need to go watch all of them.
- 43:25SPEAKER_01: No, you know, no, no, no, no, no, no.
- 43:27SPEAKER_01: I I barely even touched the really old corny ones.
- 43:30SPEAKER_01: Uh I've I've only watched the Daniel Craig ones.
- 43:32SPEAKER_01: They're they're self-contained in the actor, like they just go with the actor.
- 43:36SPEAKER_01: They it's pretty you can think of it as pretty much a new character and new franchise each time.
- 43:40SPEAKER_01: So okay, I may go do movies.
- 43:42SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I may go do that.
- 43:44SPEAKER_02: I started off like with Marvel.
- 43:45SPEAKER_02: I'm wearing a Marvel show right now.
- 43:47SPEAKER_02: I started off with those.
- 43:48SPEAKER_02: I saw like Iron Man back in 2008.
- 43:50SPEAKER_02: So from there on, it was easy to watch all the Marvel movies.
- 43:52SPEAKER_02: If I missed a few, I'm like, oh, you know, I haven't seen them, so I'm just not even gonna start.
- 43:57SPEAKER_02: But uh yeah, I'll I'll have to get on that, I guess.
- 44:00SPEAKER_01: Yeah, for sure, man.
- 44:01SPEAKER_01: They're great films.
- 44:02SPEAKER_01: They're great Hollywood films, you know.
- 44:03SPEAKER_01: What about you?
- 44:04SPEAKER_01: What do you got?
- 44:05SPEAKER_02: So me and the fiance went to the movie theater, oh, probably a couple of weeks ago at this point.
- 44:10SPEAKER_02: Uh, but we went and saw Candyman.
- 44:12SPEAKER_02: That was uh one of the recent scary movies.
- 44:15SPEAKER_02: I love scary movies.
- 44:16SPEAKER_02: That's the thing about me.
- 44:17SPEAKER_02: I love getting spooked.
- 44:18SPEAKER_02: It's getting around spooky season.
- 44:20SPEAKER_02: So uh we both me and her both really enjoy getting scared.
- 44:23SPEAKER_02: I understand if you don't like scary movies, it's a weird thing to like enjoy getting spooked, but I don't know, something about it.
- 44:31SPEAKER_02: So uh Candyman was definitely good.
- 44:33SPEAKER_02: I liked it.
- 44:34SPEAKER_02: I didn't realize he was a remake from like a really old movie from like the 70s or something like that, but uh we enjoyed it.
- 44:40SPEAKER_02: It was super spooky at times, definitely had some plot to it, which I think a lot of scary movies don't.
- 44:45SPEAKER_02: Uh, they just kind of are there just to scare you, and it's all about the jump scares.
- 44:49SPEAKER_02: It's definitely not like that, it's not a slasher or anything, but it's definitely something uh that had some plot to it, which was nice.
- 44:57SPEAKER_01: You know, with horror movies, I I think they're a lot like comedies because with they're they're rarely good.
- 45:03SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 45:04SPEAKER_01: Um, you know, and it if if it's if it's got like a metacritic score of at of at least 50, then it's probably worth seeing, you know, they don't really break up into like the really critically acclaimed films.
- 45:15SPEAKER_01: Um, because usually, you know, horror films can be pretty stupid, you know, with the way the characters act, and comedies can just be unfunny, like not nothing, nothing hits, it's just terrible, and the acting's terrible.
- 45:25SPEAKER_01: And they can usually like horror films are usually like prone to low budgets and stuff like that.
- 45:30SPEAKER_01: But so you're saying that this one is actually worth seeing because it's rare to say that about a horror movie.
- 45:35SPEAKER_02: No, absolutely.
- 45:36SPEAKER_02: This one's worth seeing.
- 45:37SPEAKER_02: Um, it's definitely it's you know, it's got its corny moments, like most scary movies do at times.
- 45:42SPEAKER_02: But this one, I I really enjoyed the plot of it, you know.
- 45:45SPEAKER_02: It's that that's like I said, something you don't get from a ton of scary movies, they're just there to you know pop out like like uh when I think of like a when I think of like a bad scary movie, I think of like the nun.
- 45:56SPEAKER_02: Did you see the nun?
- 45:57SPEAKER_02: It was just it was still it was like just there to spook the crap out of you with this scary looking nun.
- 46:04SPEAKER_02: But uh no, so I didn't enjoy that one, but I did enjoy Candy Man.
- 46:08SPEAKER_02: So go see it if you get an opportunity.
- 46:10SPEAKER_01: I'm certainly a little jealous.
- 46:12SPEAKER_01: My lovely fiance, as great as she is, she refuses to watch any scary movies with me.
- 46:17SPEAKER_01: So I have to sit there and pee my pants alone whenever I want to watch them.
- 46:21SPEAKER_02: Uh but yeah, I hope y'all enjoyed that part of it.
- 46:24SPEAKER_02: But yeah, that's gonna do it.
- 46:26SPEAKER_02: You've all we already gave our songs of the week.

- 46:54SPEAKER_03: Uh wow.
- 46:55SPEAKER_03: First of all, uh got a lot of respect for Steven and Tristan.
- 47:00SPEAKER_03: Uh their program, tough guys, just uh a lot of fun.
- 47:04SPEAKER_05: I love the game of basketball, but also love West Texas, and I love Steven and Tristan.
- 47:10SPEAKER_05: So I'm extremely proud.
- 47:11SPEAKER_05: Well, I don't know where we go from here.
- 47:12SPEAKER_05: I'm I'm thinking I'm just gonna sit back down.
- 47:14SPEAKER_05: It's just not getting better than this.
- 47:17SPEAKER_00: I just want to tell Steven and Tristan, thanks for coming out.
- 47:20SPEAKER_04: The energy uh was really, really good in there today.
- 47:23SPEAKER_04: Uh we fed off of it.
- 47:25SPEAKER_04: I think it goes back and forth tremendous.
- 47:27SPEAKER_04: Uh great job, and um, you know, just just proud of our guys for the way they responded.
