Transcript
- 0:02SPEAKER_00: Hello everyone.
- 0:03SPEAKER_00: Welcome back to another great episode of Crushing Strongholds.
- 0:07SPEAKER_00: This is a podcast where we turn pain into power, trauma into triumph, and a place where we get to expose the lies of the enemy.
- 0:14SPEAKER_00: And how do we do that?
- 0:15SPEAKER_00: We do that through sharing testimonies of people's faith and how they have overcome strongholds in their life.
- 0:20SPEAKER_00: Today I have an amazing guest that I've been so super excited to have come on board and have a great conversation with.
- 0:26SPEAKER_00: And lo and behold, we kind of started before we recorded, but that's okay.
- 0:30SPEAKER_00: We're going to jump in now.
- 0:32SPEAKER_00: And this guest today, she's a creator, a writer, and a host of her own series blog about travel, style, and shopping.
- 0:40SPEAKER_00: She calls herself the Miss World Traveler.
- 0:43SPEAKER_00: Her name is Carrie Damiano.
- 0:45SPEAKER_00: I want to make sure I say that right.
- 0:47SPEAKER_00: And she has been to over 130 countries and all 50 states, which is amazing.
- 0:53SPEAKER_00: Seems like a lot of traveling, a lot of, ooh, um, I can only imagine.
- 0:57SPEAKER_00: Um her love for all things glamorous, which she weaves into every YouTube episode, stems from her decade-long tie to pageant community, uh, the recipient of the Legacy Award for over 25 years of contribution to pageant industry.
- 1:12SPEAKER_00: Best pageant coach, coach, best sponsor, best pageant judge, and best forever title holder at the Global Beauty Awards.
- 1:22SPEAKER_00: And she has been involved in pageants since 1981.
- 1:25SPEAKER_00: So let's welcome to the podcast.
- 1:28SPEAKER_00: Carrie, welcome in.
- 1:29SPEAKER_00: Say hi and say something about yourself.
- 1:31SPEAKER_01: Thank you.
- 1:32SPEAKER_01: Well, gosh, you said so many nice things about me.
- 1:34SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that's a tough path to follow.
- 1:36SPEAKER_01: Thank you.
- 1:38SPEAKER_01: Oh, yeah, I actually did get involved in pageantry in 1981, which um maybe it was like when I was a baby, but it really wasn't.
- 1:48SPEAKER_01: It was when I was in college.
- 1:50SPEAKER_01: But yeah, I got involved and and it was a calling.
- 1:53SPEAKER_01: It was a calling from the Lord, one that I didn't quite agree with, you know, and I felt the calling, and I'm like, Lord, I don't think you mean me.
- 2:03SPEAKER_01: I was very into my studies, I was very into athletics, you know, and I thought that was for fluffy girls.
- 2:08SPEAKER_01: And uh I didn't consider myself a fluffy girl.
- 2:12SPEAKER_01: Uh but you know, you know how this Holy Spirit does that?
- 2:15SPEAKER_01: He just keeps after you and after you and after you.
- 2:18SPEAKER_01: And finally I said, you know, okay, Lord, uh, if you want me to do this, show me because I have no idea where to go.
- 2:24SPEAKER_01: And this was long before internet.
- 2:26SPEAKER_01: So we had to look in the yellow pages.
- 2:28SPEAKER_01: Do you remember the yellow pages?
- 2:33SPEAKER_01: So anyway, ended up meeting this woman just sort of by chance, and she knew something about pageantry, and she got me hooked up.
- 2:40SPEAKER_01: And from there, the rest is history.
- 2:43SPEAKER_01: Never left.
- 2:44SPEAKER_00: That is so awesome.
- 2:45SPEAKER_00: I one of my best friends that um I used to live right next door to for 10 years.
- 2:50SPEAKER_00: Matter of fact, she did a pageant one year for our community, and I watched her and it was it was a lot of fun.
- 2:57SPEAKER_00: I went and, you know, participated and helped as much as I could, but I thought, oh my goodness, there's so much to it.
- 3:02SPEAKER_00: And and I have uh, you know, family, you know, cousins and stuff that have done pageantry themselves and and some kids that I know that have done it.
- 3:09SPEAKER_00: And it's amazing, you know, all of all that goes into it, all that comes out of it, and how exciting it is, all the trophies, all the awards, and it's a lot of fun to watch.
- 3:19SPEAKER_00: Um it is, and I get very invested.
- 3:21SPEAKER_01: Yes, really when you watch, you get very invested.
- 3:24SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 3:25SPEAKER_00: And it's it's it's hard because you're like try not to be biased and you're like, because you know you want to vote for the one that that's yours, but you know, it but then you see others and you're like, oh my gosh, there, you know, this one's so good, this was so cute, this one's so funny, this one, you know, look at that act they're doing, and and and and it's wonderful to watch it.
- 3:40SPEAKER_00: I had so much fun going.
- 3:41SPEAKER_00: Um, I didn't do very much of it.
- 3:44SPEAKER_00: I thought, man, what a lot of work that was for her.
- 3:46SPEAKER_00: Because I watched her and helped her as much as I could.
- 3:48SPEAKER_00: And I was like, I don't know how you are.
- 3:50SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it is a lot of work.
- 3:52SPEAKER_01: It's like any any preparation for a competition.
- 3:54SPEAKER_01: You know, don't you don't just go in.
- 3:56SPEAKER_01: Uh, you you know, even if you want to sing in church, you still have to practice, you still have to go take lessons, you still have to warm up.
- 4:02SPEAKER_01: You, you know, I mean, there's a process of preparation.
- 4:05SPEAKER_01: Really, no matter what you do, pageantry is the same way.
- 4:09SPEAKER_01: We don't just, you know, put on some lipstick and say, we're done, we're ready to go.
- 4:12SPEAKER_01: It's too competitive.
- 4:14SPEAKER_00: All right.
- 4:14SPEAKER_00: I would hope people wouldn't do that.
- 4:17SPEAKER_00: I'm sure many many people might have tried, but exactly.
- 4:21SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I could just see me uh stumbling on myself if I tried doing something like that.
- 4:25SPEAKER_00: But I love that you have traveled like all over the world and and you've been all over the United States, and like we've already talked about you, you know, you've even been here where I live and excuse me, and um, and so some of the places I've been.
- 4:39SPEAKER_00: And so I I want to ask you a quick question.
- 4:41SPEAKER_00: I want to ask you out of all of these amazing places that you've been, you probably get asked this a lot, but um, what is your what was your very most favorite place that you got to go and visit and see?
- 4:53SPEAKER_01: Well, I have different favorites for different reasons.
- 4:56SPEAKER_01: I I kind of uh you know, um, I'm not a foodie.
- 5:00SPEAKER_01: Um, so I don't really have places where I say I love to the food.
- 5:04SPEAKER_01: Uh I I'm a shopper, so I have places where I love the shopping, and I would say Paris would probably be my favorite for shopping for um culture, you know, the history, that sort of thing.
- 5:16SPEAKER_01: But I would say Egypt for just shock value.
- 5:19SPEAKER_01: You know, the the heat was shocking, the lack of sanitation was shocking, the the monuments were shocking, you know, just there was just a lot of shock value there.
- 5:30SPEAKER_01: Um, I would say for friendliness of the people, both Australia and New Zealand.
- 5:35SPEAKER_01: And I actually just got back from a month in Sydney.
- 5:38SPEAKER_01: I was working on Ms.
- 5:39SPEAKER_01: World Traveler there, and uh it it truly is.
- 5:42SPEAKER_01: The people are just friendly.
- 5:43SPEAKER_01: They love Americans and they just embrace you, you know, almost invite you.
- 5:48SPEAKER_01: Oh, you're a stranger and they invite you over for dinner.
- 5:50SPEAKER_01: So they're just friendly, and um, that's really nice to be around.
- 5:53SPEAKER_00: Oh, I would love that.
- 5:55SPEAKER_00: I I I want to go to Ireland and I want to go to Jerusalem.
- 5:57SPEAKER_00: Those are all my bucket lists.
- 5:59SPEAKER_01: What Ireland and where?
- 6:00SPEAKER_00: Jerusalem.
- 6:01SPEAKER_00: Oh, Jerusalem, yes.
- 6:02SPEAKER_00: Israel, yeah.
- 6:03SPEAKER_00: I want to go to Bethlehem and I want to walk where Jesus walked.
- 6:06SPEAKER_00: And go to the and go to the prayer wall and you know, just do a few things and um, you know, go to the mount and whatnot.
- 6:13SPEAKER_00: But those are a couple of my bucket list goals.
- 6:16SPEAKER_00: And my mom wanted to go to Ireland, so did my daughter.
- 6:19SPEAKER_00: So um that's our our bucket bucket list for that.
- 6:23SPEAKER_01: And and you'd love both, and they're they're of course very different.
- 6:26SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 6:26SPEAKER_01: Um, I would say in Israel, I had several very spiritual experiences, which is kind of expected that you're going to, uh, but sometimes you know, there's ones you can just put your finger on and go, wow, that was a spiritual experience.
- 6:40SPEAKER_01: And one of them was in the Garden of Gethsemane.
- 6:43SPEAKER_01: Nice.
- 6:44SPEAKER_01: Um, you know, just sitting there and knowing what happened there.
- 6:50SPEAKER_01: Um, that was just this amazing where the spirit just came on and it was an amazing experience.
- 6:57SPEAKER_01: And then um the other one was that there are two places where they think the tomb was.
- 7:03SPEAKER_01: Um, and they only took us to one of them, and I had a great experience there too.
- 7:08SPEAKER_01: So, you know, that there's just these amazing places that you go.
- 7:12SPEAKER_01: Um, the the place where they think the manger was, that wasn't a spiritual experience because they built a church over it and they put all it's a Greek Orthodox church and they put all these kind of things, and and it's just kind of a walking the tourist through 100 miles an hour.
- 7:28SPEAKER_01: Um, so it it wasn't a super spiritual experience there, but I had them other places, so still very worth going.
- 7:36SPEAKER_00: I bet.
- 7:37SPEAKER_00: I yeah, I I could I can all mention.
- 7:38SPEAKER_00: I like to watch documentaries of you know that area and just the stuff that's changed, the history and and just you know how the culture has shifted and everything.
- 7:49SPEAKER_00: And I always just wondered what it would be like.
- 7:51SPEAKER_00: If you I always wondered, like when you get there and you land, if you just start feeling the presence, you know, um you know, that Holy Spirit, you know, ambiance all around you.
- 8:00SPEAKER_00: I feel like that's what would happen.
- 8:02SPEAKER_01: Like holy ground, very much so.
- 8:04SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 8:05SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I think it's it's special.
- 8:08SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 8:08SPEAKER_00: And then Ireland, I think Ireland would be fun.
- 8:10SPEAKER_00: I want to go to a pub and and hear, you know, the Irishmen sing and dance.
- 8:15SPEAKER_00: And I think that'd be great too.
- 8:17SPEAKER_01: Ireland is a very special place too.
- 8:19SPEAKER_01: It has its own feel, uh, and it's just so green, but green and wet.
- 8:25SPEAKER_01: Most of the time it's wet, uh, but it you don't care.
- 8:29SPEAKER_01: It's just so beautiful and um historical.
- 8:32SPEAKER_01: It's just wonderful.
- 8:33SPEAKER_01: I think you'd love it.
- 8:35SPEAKER_00: Oh, I can't wait.
- 8:36SPEAKER_00: Now, the other question I have for you, out of all the places you traveled, what was your least favorite place to go to?
- 8:42SPEAKER_00: Or do you have one?
- 8:44SPEAKER_01: Yes, I would say I have a couple.
- 8:46SPEAKER_01: Um, one was Albania, and it wasn't so much that it was my least favorite, it was um they hadn't been out of communism all that long.
- 8:56SPEAKER_01: And so there were just still so many remnants, and it was just so sobering to see what those remnants were.
- 9:03SPEAKER_01: So, for example, um, you know, during uh communism, they they built buildings and they were just these gray cement blocks.
- 9:11SPEAKER_01: There was no ornamentation, there was nothing pretty, just gray cement.
- 9:15SPEAKER_01: So it's it was quite depressing.
- 9:17SPEAKER_01: And uh, you know, once they they got out from underneath communism, they painted their buildings like psychedelic colors.
- 9:24SPEAKER_01: And I just thought, you know, this was just that pendulum swing from gray and ugly and boring and awful and uh required to we can do whatever we want.
- 9:37SPEAKER_01: Um, and you know, and and so they had a long way to go.
- 9:41SPEAKER_01: There was still a lot, a lot to be done.
- 9:44SPEAKER_01: It was one of those places maybe go back in 10 or 20 years and see how far the progress is, how far they've come.
- 9:51SPEAKER_01: But it was it was a bit depressing.
- 9:55SPEAKER_00: Is there any place that you haven't gone yet that you want to go to?
- 9:59SPEAKER_01: Yes, I still have things on my bucket list.
- 10:01SPEAKER_01: Um, I actually just did um Africa in uh November, December, and I did Namibia, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Botswana, you know, the southern part, but there's a whole center section that I haven't done.
- 10:16SPEAKER_01: I've done Egypt and um Tanzania and Kenya, but a whole center section.
- 10:20SPEAKER_01: And it it's not the type of places that you go for a good time.
- 10:26SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 10:26SPEAKER_01: You know, it's places you go to see, to learn, to um understand better the culture, um, to more appreciate your own culture.
- 10:35SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I could see that.
- 10:37SPEAKER_00: I'm um I'm a big supporter of um Kenya, and um it's it's it's I have a couple of people that live there that are pastors and um try to keep in contact with them and you know a lot of our church helped fund one of the orphanages there and um just helping the children and what have you, but I've always wanted to go like as a missionary.
- 10:59SPEAKER_00: I didn't I didn't ever think it would be like um it would be like a holiday trip, it would be more like a missionary trip to go to those oh there's and there's so much work to be done there.
- 11:09SPEAKER_01: Harvest is ripe.
- 11:10SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's great though.
- 11:12SPEAKER_00: And um I'm involved with a a church in Pakistan.
- 11:16SPEAKER_00: Um, and uh they they've actually just recently w asked me to to speak to to their church.
- 11:22SPEAKER_00: I'm really excited about that.
- 11:23SPEAKER_00: I'm a little nervous about that, but I'm like, oh my goodness, I just I see what they don't have compared to what we have.
- 11:29SPEAKER_00: And it's kind of hard, you know, just breaks your heart when you know you wanna you want to encourage them and um just just explain to them how much you know God loves them, even where they're at, you know, because sometimes it just when you look at the world sometimes you think sometimes it's not fair.
- 11:45SPEAKER_00: And um, because we're spoiled over here.
- 11:47SPEAKER_00: We're spoiled in the United States.
- 11:49SPEAKER_00: We we very much are, and um, and so when you you know think about places like that, it just kind of wrecks you a little bit, like just you know really pulls on your hearts.
- 11:58SPEAKER_01: There's there's always places to go.
- 12:00SPEAKER_01: There's always places God wants to send, you know, those who are willing to go.
- 12:05SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 12:05SPEAKER_01: To bring to bring his word, right?
- 12:07SPEAKER_01: Um so that there they're almost like has to be.
- 12:11SPEAKER_01: There has to be those places.
- 12:12SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 12:13SPEAKER_00: I mean, I I mean that yeah, that makes a lot of sense.
- 12:16SPEAKER_00: Now I know for me, like when I travel or drive around, um, I'm in, I've been around the United States, been in several different states.
- 12:22SPEAKER_00: I've only been to Canada and I've been to Mexico.
- 12:25SPEAKER_00: I haven't gone any further than that.
- 12:27SPEAKER_00: I want to go to Hawaii maybe one day, but um, I know when I go on these on trips with my family, I'm the oddball.
- 12:34SPEAKER_00: I'll be like, um, let's not follow the map.
- 12:36SPEAKER_00: Let's just find Bob's Road.
- 12:37SPEAKER_00: And they're like, what is Bob's Road?
- 12:38SPEAKER_00: I'm like, it's just the miscellaneous road on the map.
- 12:40SPEAKER_00: Like, just let's turn here and see where we end up.
- 12:43SPEAKER_00: And we always find the coolest places, like a little, like a little restaurant or a little shop or a little gifts, gift store, or even a fruit stand.
- 12:52SPEAKER_00: We found some amazing fruit stands along the way.
- 12:54SPEAKER_00: And I'm like, the best fruit you could ever ask for.
- 12:57SPEAKER_00: And it's in the middle of, you know, nowhere.
- 12:59SPEAKER_00: You would never go.
- 13:00SPEAKER_00: I'm gonna go right here on the map to find this, and here it is, you know.
- 13:04SPEAKER_00: And that's what I love to do when we travel.
- 13:06SPEAKER_00: And everybody's like, okay, I wonder where, you know, my family's like, wonder where mom's gonna lead us this time.
- 13:11SPEAKER_00: We always end up somewhere, you know.
- 13:13SPEAKER_00: But we never forget it.
- 13:15SPEAKER_00: You know, it's a trip we never ever forget.
- 13:17SPEAKER_01: Love it.
- 13:18SPEAKER_00: I like it.
- 13:19SPEAKER_01: And that is, yeah, that's such a great way to just be open to whatever.
- 13:25SPEAKER_01: And for me, I'm a kind of a destination-driven person.
- 13:29SPEAKER_01: I'm on the way and I have X number of hours I'm gonna take to get there.
- 13:33SPEAKER_01: And it's very hard for me to stop unless I have planned it.
- 13:38SPEAKER_01: Um, so I I can appreciate what you're doing uh because I I get that, that just that flexibility, just that being open to whatever means you are going to have amazing experiences.
- 13:51SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 13:52SPEAKER_00: When I traveled, um, like I was sharing with you before we started recording, we uh my aunt with me up to Post Falls.
- 13:58SPEAKER_00: And um she said, I never get to go anywhere, you know, and um excuse me, her husband doesn't like to travel that much.
- 14:04SPEAKER_00: And I always take her on these trips with me.
- 14:06SPEAKER_00: I'm like, I'm going on a trip, you want to go?
- 14:07SPEAKER_00: And she's like, okay, even if it's just a weekend, and and I always um try and stop at the weirdest places just because, you know, she's like, no one ever takes me anywhere to these places, but you always we always find these crazy little like either a thrift shop or an antique shop or you know, an art gallery or whatever we run into.
- 14:27SPEAKER_00: And it's it's not like, oh, let's just run into the convenience store, you know.
- 14:31SPEAKER_00: No, let's go to this place.
- 14:32SPEAKER_00: We've never I've never heard of that before.
- 14:34SPEAKER_00: And so, you know, I'd like to be spontaneous and doing that kind of stuff.
- 14:37SPEAKER_00: And I like I said, you just find all kinds of weird, different, interesting things out there.
- 14:42SPEAKER_00: Never know what you'll come home with, that's for sure.
- 14:45unknown: Love that.
- 14:46SPEAKER_00: Yeah, we always come home with the strangest gifts.
- 14:48SPEAKER_00: They're like, What made you get this?
- 14:49SPEAKER_00: I'm like, I stopped at this crazy store and I saw it and I had to get it.
- 14:52SPEAKER_00: You know, it was different.
- 14:54SPEAKER_00: I've never seen something like that before.
- 14:56SPEAKER_00: But it's a lot of fun, you know, to travel and just see things and enjoy it.
- 15:00SPEAKER_01: It is.
- 15:01SPEAKER_01: You know, it's your continuing education.
- 15:04SPEAKER_01: You learn something.
- 15:05SPEAKER_01: Every time you go somewhere new, you learn something about a new area, uh, about the people there, um, you know, about some history.
- 15:14SPEAKER_01: You're always learning something new when you get out of your comfort zone and go somewhere new.
- 15:20SPEAKER_00: Yes, exactly.
- 15:21SPEAKER_00: Now, with this being um crushing strongholds, I know that you've traveled a lot, you've done a lot of amazing things.
- 15:26SPEAKER_00: Um, are there any obstacles or strongholds that you had to overcome to get you where you are today?
- 15:33SPEAKER_01: Well, one of the things I talk about is because I've been traveling alone for over 30 years.
- 15:39SPEAKER_01: But when I first started, I traveled with my mom.
- 15:42SPEAKER_01: And that sort of got my feet wet.
- 15:43SPEAKER_01: So I feel very fortunate that I didn't have to like start doing it alone.
- 15:48SPEAKER_01: I had a partner for the first few years until I got comfortable and sort of financially ready to do it, but also mentally ready to do it by myself.
- 15:57SPEAKER_01: Um, but I talked to a lot of women who are fearful.
- 16:00SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 16:01SPEAKER_01: They, you know, they're afraid of, you know, figuring it out how to do it on their own.
- 16:05SPEAKER_01: Will I be lonely?
- 16:06SPEAKER_01: Can I afford it?
- 16:08SPEAKER_01: Is it safe?
- 16:09SPEAKER_01: Um, you know, I mean, they have these fears.
- 16:11SPEAKER_01: And sometimes we can't even put our finger on what those fears are.
- 16:14SPEAKER_01: And so you know, I like to just say, you know, you were talking about just a weekend trip.
- 16:18SPEAKER_01: Take a baby step, try it, take a little weekend by yourself, go somewhere, you know, on your own, figure it all out, go by yourself and see if you like it.
- 16:29SPEAKER_01: If you don't, okay, now you know.
- 16:31SPEAKER_01: But if you do, then you take a week trip.
- 16:34SPEAKER_01: You know, don't go to Russia for two weeks by yourself on your first time out.
- 16:40SPEAKER_00: Terrified.
- 16:42unknown: Terrified.
- 16:42SPEAKER_01: Like, get in here.
- 16:45SPEAKER_01: So so I think that you know, the overcoming our fears, even if we don't, we haven't put our finger on what they are, they can still be there.
- 16:54SPEAKER_01: And then, of course, that verse that God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.
- 17:00SPEAKER_01: I mean, we have the ability to figure these things out, but sometimes fears overshadow us and we don't figure them out.
- 17:07SPEAKER_01: We just say, hmm, yeah, you can't believe you're going by yourself.
- 17:11SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 17:12SPEAKER_00: Have you ever ever encountered anything that became frightening or scary as you traveled?
- 17:17SPEAKER_01: Sometimes in a while.
- 17:19SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 17:19SPEAKER_01: In fact, uh, just when I was in this was in um Namibia, uh, I had pretty much everywhere I went, I had a guide meeting there, a private guide.
- 17:29SPEAKER_01: You know, I'm not familiar with the area.
- 17:32SPEAKER_01: I have a very limited time.
- 17:34SPEAKER_01: Most places it was one day, maybe a day and a half.
- 17:36SPEAKER_01: So I had a guide to take me over.
- 17:38SPEAKER_01: Anyway, he had dropped me off at my hotel and I wanted to go get some dinner.
- 17:42SPEAKER_01: So I walked to this like mall area and I had to go through a parking, uh, like a covered parking area, and there were lots and lots of people in there milling about.
- 17:51SPEAKER_01: And as I was walking out, a whole bunch of men came running at me and um and they were talking loudly, and it's it frightened me.
- 18:02SPEAKER_01: Um and so I kind of grabbed my purse and just you know put my head down and kept walking.
- 18:06SPEAKER_01: And I realized afterwards they were taxi drivers and they were all trying to get me to go in their taxi.
- 18:11SPEAKER_01: Um, you know, but at the at that moment when you're frightened, um, you know, that you're you're now surrounded by strangers um and in an unfamiliar place.
- 18:21SPEAKER_01: And I got my purse and I've got my passport and I'm hanging on for dear life.
- 18:26SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 18:27SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 18:28SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 18:28SPEAKER_01: Um, so yeah, you know, I mean every once in a while you have an instance, but it was fine.
- 18:34SPEAKER_01: And I just kind of just kept walking and kept my head down and nothing happened.
- 18:38SPEAKER_00: Now, do you ever find that you do get lonely when you travel by yourself?
- 18:43SPEAKER_00: You just just like it, it's just comfortable.
- 18:45SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I love it.
- 18:46SPEAKER_01: Yeah, you know, I I've always felt this way that if you have the Lord, yeah, you're never alone.
- 18:51SPEAKER_01: I mean, you're by yourself, but you're never alone.
- 18:54SPEAKER_01: And so I had this constant running conversation with God, you know, in my mind, which is what we're supposed to be doing.
- 18:59SPEAKER_01: We're supposed to be talking all the time, right?
- 19:02SPEAKER_01: Um, so I never I never feel lonely, even though I'm by myself.
- 19:07SPEAKER_01: And I also I used to say this to a lot of women that ask me that very question.
- 19:11SPEAKER_01: See, you can be around people as much as you want to.
- 19:14SPEAKER_01: You're welcome, strike up a conversation with somebody or in a store or in a restaurant, talk to the people next to you, uh, on the airplane, talk to the people, you know, you can have as much um alone time or as much social time as you want to.
- 19:28SPEAKER_01: That's completely up to you.
- 19:30SPEAKER_00: That's right.
- 19:30SPEAKER_00: I agree.
- 19:31SPEAKER_00: Because I when I usually when I leave the house, I'm pretty sociable.
- 19:34SPEAKER_00: So um, my daughter's like, Mom, you're such a homebody, but once you get out the door, you're like this blood butterfly, you know.
- 19:40SPEAKER_00: And I'm like, Yeah, because I'm at home quite a bit and I don't get to, you know, interact, you know, as an in-home caregiver, you kind of you don't get to go as many places.
- 19:48SPEAKER_00: And I've always traveled from, you know, when I was really young, my mom traveled too.
- 19:53SPEAKER_00: And so we were always just get in the car, let's go, get in the car.
- 19:56SPEAKER_00: I mean, it just throw throw in a throw in um a couple blankets and a pillow, grab some clothes, grab some food, and let's go up to the mountains or whatever.
- 20:03SPEAKER_00: We just go.
- 20:04SPEAKER_00: And it taught me not to be afraid.
- 20:07SPEAKER_01: Exactly.
- 20:07SPEAKER_01: I can relate to that because my mom was kind of ahead of her time like that.
- 20:12SPEAKER_01: It's and it's because her mom was too.
- 20:15SPEAKER_01: Like during the depression, um, her husband, my grandpa, had to go, you know, to find work.
- 20:21SPEAKER_01: He was a heavy equipment operator, and so we had to leave town and go to find work, and she would just load the kids up in the car and you know, go to see him.
- 20:30SPEAKER_01: And you know, so she was sort of without fear.
- 20:32SPEAKER_01: So my mom grew up that way, and then she passed that on to us.
- 20:36SPEAKER_01: We were on the swim team and the track team and the volleyball team and all those things, and she just took us to our meets and um, you know, my dad was working, and and it never stopped her from just going and doing.
- 20:47SPEAKER_01: So I totally get where you're coming from that it was just, you know, it was a good example to be set in your life.
- 20:54SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 20:55SPEAKER_00: Well, I know like for myself, like I wouldn't be able to, and I actually have a friend that does this that that goes to the movies by themselves.
- 21:01SPEAKER_00: And I'm like, you go to the movies by yourself.
- 21:04SPEAKER_00: And I thought, I've never, well, I just never thought about doing it.
- 21:07SPEAKER_00: It's just you know, I've always gone with someone, or someone invited me, or I invited someone else.
- 21:11SPEAKER_00: And I thought I never really just thought, hey, I'm gonna go to go see this movie by myself.
- 21:15SPEAKER_00: And you know, I thought that was kind of a weird thing.
- 21:17SPEAKER_01: You're sitting in the dark and you can't talk to anybody while the movie's on anyway.
- 21:21unknown: Right.
- 21:23SPEAKER_00: You know, you just go sit down and enjoy some popcorn and watch the movie.
- 21:26SPEAKER_00: It's like it's not that hard.
- 21:28SPEAKER_01: You gotta take the baby step.
- 21:29SPEAKER_01: You gotta go to the movie by yourself.
- 21:30SPEAKER_01: And you say, No, if you if you die of embarrassment because you're there by yourself, then don't do it again.
- 21:36SPEAKER_01: But I don't think you will.
- 21:38SPEAKER_00: Yeah, no, I I don't think I'd be afraid of it.
- 21:40SPEAKER_00: I just never thought of doing that.
- 21:41SPEAKER_00: It wasn't a thought that crossed my mind until this person said, Yeah, I go to the movies all the time by myself.
- 21:46SPEAKER_00: I said, Did you say by yourself?
- 21:48SPEAKER_00: And they said, Yeah.
- 21:49SPEAKER_00: And I said, How's that go?
- 21:50SPEAKER_00: Like I've just because I've not ever done it.
- 21:52SPEAKER_00: And um, I've always just, you know, been w around people.
- 21:56SPEAKER_00: And they're like, I just wanted to go to a movie and just went.
- 21:59SPEAKER_00: I'm like, Okay.
- 22:00SPEAKER_00: Like like I guess when you turn on the TV and you want to watch a movie, it's the same thing.
- 22:03SPEAKER_00: You just, you know, it's it's more fun to go out to watch it, you know, on the big screen.
- 22:07SPEAKER_00: So I could see that I still to this day haven't done it.
- 22:10SPEAKER_00: And I probably will put that on my bucket list, you know, go to a movie by yourself.
- 22:14SPEAKER_01: Check that off.
- 22:16SPEAKER_01: You know, I learned this a long, long time ago that if I waited for someone to go with me, I would never get to go.
- 22:23SPEAKER_01: And that's with everything.
- 22:24SPEAKER_01: You know, I'm single, never married, no children.
- 22:26SPEAKER_01: So I live alone.
- 22:28SPEAKER_01: I I have my own office, just me here.
- 22:31SPEAKER_01: Um, and it's a bit of a solitary lifestyle.
- 22:35SPEAKER_01: So I have to do things by myself.
- 22:37SPEAKER_01: Can't can't be afraid.
- 22:38SPEAKER_01: You remember that uh movie The Lonely Guy with Steve Martin?
- 22:42SPEAKER_00: Oh, yeah.
- 22:42SPEAKER_01: Did you ever see that?
- 22:43SPEAKER_01: That from the, I don't know, maybe the 80s or 90s, where when he walked into the restaurant, the spotlight came on him.
- 22:48SPEAKER_01: You know, you're here alone.
- 22:50SPEAKER_01: And then everybody looked, you know, once you get over that, then the world is your oyster because you don't care.
- 22:57SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 22:57SPEAKER_01: It doesn't matter if you're by yourself.
- 22:59SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I think we put that, we put that on ourselves quite a bit.
- 23:03SPEAKER_00: Now I have a question.
- 23:04SPEAKER_00: You with you traveling, are you an animal lover?
- 23:06SPEAKER_00: Do you have animals?
- 23:07SPEAKER_00: Do you have pets?
- 23:08SPEAKER_01: Or are you just like I'm not an animal lover.
- 23:10SPEAKER_01: I don't have pets.
- 23:12SPEAKER_00: I I could see it being hard as well.
- 23:15SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 23:16SPEAKER_00: Like you can't have the goldfish wait three months until you get back.
- 23:19SPEAKER_00: Exactly.
- 23:20SPEAKER_01: You know, I don't have any plants either.
- 23:22SPEAKER_01: Nothing that will die while I'm gone.
- 23:25SPEAKER_00: Nothing that, you know, survival of the fittest uh if if you did.
- 23:30unknown: Exactly.
- 23:31SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 23:31SPEAKER_00: I'm no good with plants either because of for the same reason, but um I I find that, you know, because I have two dogs, but when I travel, it you know, I really have to think about my traveling plants because I I include them on everything and I have to make sure everywhere I go that they're welcomed and they're taken care of and you know they have as much fun as I do, hopefully.
- 23:50SPEAKER_00: And if I can't take them, then I, you know, then I find someone to watch them or take care of it.
- 23:54SPEAKER_02: It's a different kind of trip.
- 23:56SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 23:56SPEAKER_00: So I just wondered about that because um I didn't see anything about any type of animals on your on your on your website.
- 24:03SPEAKER_00: I'm like, I don't see her with any animals.
- 24:04SPEAKER_00: Like like the other day, I just I went to the the store the other day, and this guy had his big old um um parrot on his shoulder.
- 24:12SPEAKER_00: And I was like, Well, see, he's got a companion.
- 24:14SPEAKER_00: He's got a little travel buddy, and you know, and and he was coming out of the liquor store, and I thought, I wonder what that bird was saying in there.
- 24:19SPEAKER_01: Get the whiskey, get the bourbon.
- 24:23SPEAKER_01: My daughter was like, I was like, Oh, he's got a companion.
- 24:30SPEAKER_01: Here, try this.
- 24:31SPEAKER_01: How is it?
- 24:37SPEAKER_00: But I see people do, you know, do get creative and take in their animals.
- 24:40SPEAKER_00: I've seen like the animal backpacks, and I I was in Home Depot, and this lady had a backpack on that had air vents and her cat was in it.
- 24:47SPEAKER_00: You know, it's all hard plastic shell, but it's a backpack, and I'm like, there's a cat in that backpack.
- 24:53SPEAKER_00: And I thought, you know, that's creative, you know, because they want to go do things and they're they want to have a cat too.
- 24:58SPEAKER_00: So they figured out a way around, you know, all the difficulties.
- 25:01SPEAKER_00: And I think that's how it is it can be done, right?
- 25:04SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 25:04SPEAKER_01: Um, it's not holding you back.
- 25:06SPEAKER_01: So whatever it takes, figure it out so that you're not being held back.
- 25:10SPEAKER_01: Because you know, why have the excuse?
- 25:12SPEAKER_01: Well, I can't go anywhere because I have no one to watch my dogs.
- 25:15SPEAKER_01: Well, figure out a way to take your dogs with you or whatever.
- 25:18SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 25:19SPEAKER_00: Now I bet I know I I can only imagine that you made a lot of people when you travel.
- 25:23SPEAKER_00: Now, how many of those, like out of all of these states, uh do you have like a lot of friends or just like acquaintan people?
- 25:29SPEAKER_00: Those were acquaintances, you got acquainted and now you've moved on, or have you actually made connections and relationships with people that have become close friends of yours?
- 25:37SPEAKER_01: See, mostly acquaintances.
- 25:39SPEAKER_01: Uh, but I do have one, uh, a gal that I met while I was going to graduate school in London.
- 25:45SPEAKER_01: And I lived there for about a year and a half, and we got to be friends.
- 25:48SPEAKER_01: And those were in the days before email.
- 25:51SPEAKER_01: And so we wrote letters.
- 25:52SPEAKER_01: So we were pen pals for a while, from like 1995 to about maybe 1993, when uh computers came out to the point where people could have them.
- 26:02SPEAKER_01: It was affordable for people to have them, and then we were able to start emailing.
- 26:06SPEAKER_01: But so we have been friends for over 30 years, 40, 40 years now.
- 26:12SPEAKER_01: Oh my goodness.
- 26:13SPEAKER_01: And we meet at various places around the world.
- 26:16SPEAKER_01: So we have we have we have been all over.
- 26:18SPEAKER_01: Uh so we've maintained our friendship.
- 26:20SPEAKER_01: We try and see each other at least once every two years, uh, maybe you know, year and a half or so.
- 26:26SPEAKER_01: But um, so that is a friendship that sort of started as we met in school, but we tried really hard to maintain it.
- 26:35SPEAKER_01: And then we have been able to.
- 26:37SPEAKER_00: That's really awesome.
- 26:38SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 26:38SPEAKER_00: I I always would think, like, you know, if you meet someone that you, you know, you befriend and then you end up traveling around and meeting them in different different places.
- 26:47SPEAKER_00: I think that would be amazing.
- 26:48SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 26:49SPEAKER_00: And like my best, my best friend, we do that.
- 26:51SPEAKER_00: Like, I'll have her come up here and I'll take her on a trip, or I'll go up there and we'll go on a trip together because we just love spending time together.
- 26:58SPEAKER_00: Like we'll go to a woman's retreat up in the mountains, or you know, we'll just do just just fun things, whatever.
- 27:03SPEAKER_00: Just just her and I, just to get away from, you know, she's married and and what have you.
- 27:07SPEAKER_00: But I know that um I'm getting ready to be an empty nest or my daughter's 17.
- 27:12SPEAKER_00: And so um my youngest, uh my my oldest is is 34.
- 27:17SPEAKER_00: So um but it's a little spread out.
- 27:20SPEAKER_00: Well, I adopted her.
- 27:20SPEAKER_00: I adopted her when she was nine.
- 27:22SPEAKER_00: So um um, I've had a lot of fun, but she's getting to the point where you know, mom, she doesn't need mom as much as mom needs her, probably.
- 27:30SPEAKER_00: And I was thinking to myself, oh my goodness, you know, I I have all this free time now, especially with my grandma passing, and you know, just you know, things have opened up for me.
- 27:40SPEAKER_00: And like I said, I started this podcast because I was kind of stuck at home and I've I've absolutely loved it and I still love it, and I I plan on continuing to do it because I get to meet people like you.
- 27:50SPEAKER_00: And I always thought to myself, if I were to not have anything holding me back, like what would I want to do?
- 27:58SPEAKER_00: Where would I want to go?
- 27:58SPEAKER_00: And there's so many things.
- 28:00SPEAKER_00: I told my daughter and she's like, What are you doing?
- 28:02SPEAKER_00: I said, I'm doing this, and she's like, Why?
- 28:03SPEAKER_00: I go, because I can.
- 28:04SPEAKER_02: I can.
- 28:05SPEAKER_00: That's my answer for everything now.
- 28:07SPEAKER_00: I'm like, I can just do whatever I want.
- 28:08SPEAKER_00: She's like, and and I go, and you know what, I don't even have any worries.
- 28:12SPEAKER_00: And she's like, Good for you, mom.
- 28:13SPEAKER_00: Good for you, you know.
- 28:15SPEAKER_01: But you know, I also think that is part of an age thing.
- 28:19SPEAKER_01: As you get older, you just become so much more comfortable with who you are, where you are in life, and uh so little left about answering to other people.
- 28:29SPEAKER_01: You know, when when we were younger, we dressed like everybody else because we didn't want to be made fun of at school.
- 28:35SPEAKER_01: And you know, and then you're in your 20s and you're trying to build your career and you know, and you're just working and working.
- 28:40SPEAKER_01: And um, and after a while, you just go, what's the point of all of that?
- 28:46SPEAKER_01: You know, I'm just gonna be me.
- 28:47SPEAKER_01: I'm just gonna do what fills my cup and uh, you know, just things that I'm passionate about and not answer to anybody about it.
- 28:54SPEAKER_01: So I think there's a beauty and freedom in that in maturity.
- 29:00SPEAKER_00: Yes, I agree.
- 29:01SPEAKER_00: And I and as my daughter's watching me, she's like, um, she gets excited because she's like, oh man, now she's I know her gears are turning.
- 29:10SPEAKER_00: She's probably thinking, you know, when my kids are out of school, I'm gonna start thinking about what I want to do, you know.
- 29:16SPEAKER_00: And I'm like, yeah, you can do whatever you want, you know, go wherever you want to go and you know, and have fun.
- 29:21SPEAKER_00: Go, go try new things, go check out new things and you know, go buy that thing that you said you wanted that you never would buy yourself, you know.
- 29:29SPEAKER_00: That's right because you know, sometimes we just don't, you know, we don't fate, you know, we don't treat ourselves sometimes when we when it it's okay to do that.
- 29:36SPEAKER_00: I tell people it's okay, you know, it's not a selfish thing to do something nice for yourself.
- 29:40SPEAKER_00: It's really not.
- 29:41SPEAKER_00: It's okay, it's allowed, you know.
- 29:43SPEAKER_00: It is society.
- 29:46SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I think s society does a couple of things.
- 29:48SPEAKER_00: Like either one, you gotta either try to keep up with the Joneses, or for two, it's not necessary, you don't need that.
- 29:54SPEAKER_00: Like, what do you need that at this age, you know?
- 29:56SPEAKER_00: And I'm thinking I've heard of people in midlife crisis go out and buy Lamborghinis.
- 30:00SPEAKER_00: I mean, come on.
- 30:00SPEAKER_00: I I mean I had a gal that just before she passed away went and bought a Lamborghini and she had cancer.
- 30:05SPEAKER_00: And I thought, why is she buying a Lamborghini, you know?
- 30:08SPEAKER_00: And she's like, Well, like I said, because I can.
- 30:10SPEAKER_00: And I was like, Oh my goodness, that's great.
- 30:11SPEAKER_00: I thought it was great.
- 30:12SPEAKER_00: And a lot of people were like, why would she do that?
- 30:15SPEAKER_00: Why would she go, you know, spend the money?
- 30:17SPEAKER_00: She had the money, she was able.
- 30:19SPEAKER_00: Why not do it?
- 30:20SPEAKER_00: I mean, let her enjoy the last, whatever last bits of her life.
- 30:23SPEAKER_01: Exactly.
- 30:23SPEAKER_01: Have those experiences that you've always wanted before it's too late.
- 30:28SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and I think people don't do that.
- 30:29SPEAKER_00: Love that.
- 30:31SPEAKER_00: I think you're sitting ducks, you know, and then their pond gets a little murky.
- 30:35SPEAKER_00: It's like, get out a little bit, go find some fresher water.
- 30:40SPEAKER_01: Well, and to be willing to to go where God leads you, because it might you you don't know what the point is of where you're being led.
- 30:50SPEAKER_01: Right?
- 30:50SPEAKER_01: You go you you go on a little trip and come to find out what there was a divine appointment for you there.
- 30:56SPEAKER_01: There was somebody for you to meet, somebody you were able to inspire them through your faith, or uh just they just needed a friend, they needed someone to talk to, and there you were.
- 31:04SPEAKER_01: Um, and then you look back and you go, Oh, that was why I I kept feeling the need to go and do something.
- 31:11SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I've I've I can only imagine that probably happens a lot um with you traveling as much as you have and you know seeing the world.
- 31:20SPEAKER_00: And I mean, but now I I did want to ask you this.
- 31:23SPEAKER_00: Um, do you feel like you just live out of your suitcase most of the time?
- 31:28SPEAKER_00: You just got your suitcase packed, like I'm packed and I'm ready to go?
- 31:32SPEAKER_00: Always.
- 31:32SPEAKER_01: Yeah, kinda kind of sometimes.
- 31:35SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 31:35SPEAKER_01: I mean, I have months like um like like during busy pageant months where I'm judging every weekend.
- 31:40SPEAKER_01: That feels a little bit like living out of a suitcase.
- 31:42SPEAKER_01: Uh, but like this month trip I took to Australia.
- 31:46SPEAKER_01: Um, I the first one I did was Paris in 23, did Rome in 24, Barcelona in 25, and also did New York in 25.
- 31:54SPEAKER_01: So I've taken a couple of these month-long trips now.
- 31:56SPEAKER_01: And I do some things that make me feel at home.
- 31:59SPEAKER_01: So I rent an apartment and I put my stuff away and I bring some candles with me.
- 32:05SPEAKER_01: And I uh, you know, I have some of the comforts from home that I bring on purpose so that I feel like I'm living there, not living out of a suitcase.
- 32:15SPEAKER_01: So does that make sense?
- 32:16SPEAKER_01: It's it's really it's a mental game, you know, that you play with yourself.
- 32:20SPEAKER_01: But after a month, you you know, you developed your new habits, you know what's in the kitchen, you you know, it doesn't take take long to fill yourself into a new space and it sort of becomes your own rather than go into your suitcase and you know, putting it back in and out, you know, like this, in and out, in and out.
- 32:37SPEAKER_01: So that that's it's a little thing, but it helps me feel like I I can put some roots down here for a short time.
- 32:45SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 32:45SPEAKER_00: When I take my aunt on trips, she had never heard she didn't even know what an Airbnb was.
- 32:50SPEAKER_00: And I took her and we would stay like four or five days instead of just one night in a motel, one night in a motel, and you know, and um I took her, you know, to um we we just went to Twin Falls for the weekend.
- 33:00SPEAKER_00: It was about like four days and just you know, went to the movies and went shopping and just all kinds of stuff and sightseeing and took her to Shoshone Falls and just we just did some just girl stuff, you know.
- 33:11SPEAKER_00: And she said, I I couldn't believe that like we got to the house and we just I got there and I I move in.
- 33:16SPEAKER_00: When I get there, I move in.
- 33:17SPEAKER_00: I unpack everything.
- 33:18SPEAKER_00: I love that.
- 33:19SPEAKER_00: I don't I don't keep my stuff in the suitcase.
- 33:21SPEAKER_00: I put my stuff in the closet, I put the food in the cupboards, I'm not I'm not living out of the ice chest, you know.
- 33:27SPEAKER_00: I move in.
- 33:28SPEAKER_00: And she's like, Do you feel comfortable doing that?
- 33:30SPEAKER_00: And I said, Yeah, I I I rented this place so I could have the comforts of home.
- 33:34SPEAKER_00: You know, even though I'm home away from home, I want the same comforts and I want to enjoy it.
- 33:39SPEAKER_00: I don't want to feel like I have to go to the ice box or go to my suitcase every single time and unzip it, you know, to you know, change my clothes.
- 33:46SPEAKER_00: And same with the bathroom, like all my all my stuff's laid out and I have everything where I wanted.
- 33:51SPEAKER_00: And you know, and she's like, I get it, I get it.
- 33:55SPEAKER_00: Yeah, she goes, I can't believe she's like, that was the best weekend I've had in I don't know when.
- 34:00SPEAKER_00: She's like, I I get why you do that now.
- 34:03SPEAKER_00: She goes, I can see it.
- 34:04SPEAKER_00: She's like, it's so more comforting to do that than to be at a motel and just be, you know, right there and you know, and and the only thing is there's the bed, the TV, and the bathroom.
- 34:13SPEAKER_00: Like there's nothing.
- 34:14SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 34:15SPEAKER_00: Like we have a backyard, we can go have a fire, or you know, you know, I always try to find a place that has amenities to it, not just a you know, a bedroom or whatever.
- 34:23SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 34:24SPEAKER_00: And um, and I like to get a place that has a lot of stuff surrounding it so that way we can go adventure and go find Bob's Road.
- 34:31SPEAKER_01: I call it so this Bob's Road.
- 34:35SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 34:36SPEAKER_00: I got it off from a movie.
- 34:37SPEAKER_00: I got it off from Twister.
- 34:39SPEAKER_00: Remember the movie Twister?
- 34:40SPEAKER_00: Oh, yes, yeah.
- 34:41SPEAKER_00: And they're line the guy's turning, he's like, What rudder on?
- 34:43SPEAKER_00: He's like, I don't know.
- 34:44SPEAKER_00: Well, I think we're just on Bob's Road.
- 34:45SPEAKER_02: And I go, I love that.
- 34:46SPEAKER_02: I'm gonna steal that.
- 34:49SPEAKER_00: And so now everywhere I go, we're gonna go find Bob's Road.
- 34:52SPEAKER_02: Bob's Road.
- 34:54SPEAKER_00: Because you know, you just never know what you're gonna get.
- 34:56SPEAKER_00: So I think it's hard.
- 34:59SPEAKER_00: So, well, having that in mind, I wanted to ask you another question for all of our listeners that are out there.
- 35:05SPEAKER_00: Um, what is what would you say is the hardest part about trying to book or book up a and plan out a especially like a month long?
- 35:14SPEAKER_00: I couldn't imagine trying to plan out a whole entire month's vacation.
- 35:17SPEAKER_00: What do you what do you think?
- 35:19SPEAKER_00: Um, can you just give us a couple of perks and maybe like maybe some tips on what what you think are good to do?
- 35:25SPEAKER_00: Don't do this, try this.
- 35:27SPEAKER_00: What what would you suggest?
- 35:29SPEAKER_01: Well, the first thing is to do research before you go so that you have an idea of what is there, what's available, what are the things to do, because if you don't, it's very easy to miss something.
- 35:41SPEAKER_01: So, like, what if you went to the to Paris and missed the Eiffel Talent?
- 35:45SPEAKER_00: All right.
- 35:45SPEAKER_01: Oops.
- 35:46SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 35:47SPEAKER_01: No, I mean that's a silly example, but you you get my point that do some research so you know what are the top things.
- 35:53SPEAKER_01: You know, if you all make a list, I want to be sure that I get these things.
- 35:57SPEAKER_01: Um, and then uh part of your research is do I have to book these things in advance or not?
- 36:03SPEAKER_01: Because, like let's say Rome, a lot of the things, it's a month or three-month waiting list to get in.
- 36:10SPEAKER_01: So you think uh, well, I'm gonna book things when I get there, and then you can't.
- 36:15SPEAKER_01: Oops, we've missed something again.
- 36:17SPEAKER_01: Um, and then there's also hiring private guide.
- 36:21SPEAKER_01: So when I am going somewhere where I'm there for a very short period of time, I want to be, you know, let me hit the highlights of things I want to see.
- 36:29SPEAKER_01: You can do group tours, they're less expensive, and I have done many, many group tours, so I'm uncomfortable doing it.
- 36:37SPEAKER_01: But we spend half the time waiting for the people who were late, coming back to the bus.
- 36:43SPEAKER_01: And there's no changing the itinerary, you know, I don't want to go see that mosque, I'd rather go do this, but that's what's on the tour, so that's what you have to do.
- 36:52SPEAKER_01: Um, so I love having a private guide so that I can, yeah, I want to do that, I don't want to do that, and let's go.
- 36:57SPEAKER_01: And I want to spend more time here.
- 36:59SPEAKER_01: I want to I will see it, but I don't want to spend a lot of time there.
- 37:02SPEAKER_01: You know, so those are just maybe a couple of things that you can tailor your experience to what you want to do if you know ahead of time what those things are.
- 37:12SPEAKER_01: And that also there's still there's plenty of time for flexibility.
- 37:16SPEAKER_01: You know, I I I am not a schedule down to the minute person.
- 37:20SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 37:20SPEAKER_01: Uh it's it's a little bit like you know, they they have that analogy when they have the jar and you put the big rocks in first, and then you put the medium rocks and the smaller rocks, and then the sand and then the water.
- 37:30SPEAKER_01: You know, um, I still have lots of room for the sand and the water, but I want to get my big rocks figured out.
- 37:37SPEAKER_01: Where am I going?
- 37:38SPEAKER_01: How am I long am I gonna be there?
- 37:39SPEAKER_01: What home, hotel or Airbnb, where am I staying?
- 37:42SPEAKER_01: And then from there, now I've got the flexibility to fill in all of the little things.
- 37:47SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that's perfect.
- 37:48SPEAKER_00: I love how you explain that because um I I try to do all of those things, but I have I have done exactly what you said not to do.
- 37:55SPEAKER_00: And I I assumed that I I was gonna be able to just go there and go see um, you know, a specific thing and they were closed.
- 38:04SPEAKER_00: I didn't even know they were closed on that time.
- 38:06SPEAKER_00: I was like, they're not even open.
- 38:08SPEAKER_00: You couldn't even make a reservation because they're not even open.
- 38:11SPEAKER_00: And and and one time I had a friend that came here to visit, and I'm like, hey, let's go here.
- 38:15SPEAKER_00: I want to go here.
- 38:15SPEAKER_00: And we had like 30 minutes before they closed because they did that was their short day, and I had no idea because I didn't do my research.
- 38:22SPEAKER_00: And I was like, man, I gotta get better at at looking things up.
- 38:26SPEAKER_00: And if I really want to plan out, you know, this as an event, I need to know what what it entails because that's what happens, you know, you get the closed door sometimes.
- 38:34SPEAKER_01: You know, one well, and and I think it you know it's a lot of work up front, which I'm willing to put in.
- 38:40SPEAKER_01: And and maybe this is part of my age too, because you know, my I've traveled with my niece, she does the video videography for Miserwold Traveler, and she does things much more on the fly than I do because she's much better at it, she's very fast.
- 38:54SPEAKER_01: Uh, and and I'm not, but you're still spending your time there in the place doing the research.
- 39:01SPEAKER_01: You've wasted time doing that.
- 39:04SPEAKER_01: So if you can do it ahead, yeah, it's a lot of work, but then when you get there, that's the limited time.
- 39:10SPEAKER_01: Your time isn't limited before you go, it's limited when you get there.
- 39:14SPEAKER_01: So let's not use that time.
- 39:16SPEAKER_01: Precious time, you know.
- 39:17SPEAKER_01: Well, where should we go eat?
- 39:19SPEAKER_01: And where what should we go see now?
- 39:21SPEAKER_01: And you know, and an hour is past and you haven't figured out where you're going yet.
- 39:25SPEAKER_01: So do it on the front end, save yourself some headache.
- 39:28SPEAKER_01: That's a type.
- 39:29SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I think that's great advice.
- 39:31SPEAKER_00: Um, for those that are really good at planning stuff out.
- 39:35SPEAKER_00: I know that sometimes like myself, I'm quite spontaneous and I don't always necessarily do that.
- 39:40SPEAKER_00: But then again, if like I said, if I know it's a trip that um I'm wanting something out of it specifically, then I know definitely I need to make sure that I'm doing those things ahead of time.
- 39:50SPEAKER_00: Because it doesn't make sense to try and show up.
- 39:52SPEAKER_00: Yeah, you know, just I want the big rocks.
- 39:55SPEAKER_00: I want the big rocks, you know, all the other stuff that's that's that's the bonus.
- 39:59SPEAKER_00: And that's the bonus feature.
- 40:00SPEAKER_00: But I want the big rocks.
- 40:02SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I love that.
- 40:03SPEAKER_00: So I know that like when I travel with my family.
- 40:06SPEAKER_00: We we went a couple of years ago.
- 40:08SPEAKER_00: First time ever we finally went up to the Oregon coast.
- 40:10SPEAKER_00: We normally go to the California coast because that's where we're we're from.
- 40:13SPEAKER_00: Um and so my daughter said, What do why do we always just go straight to California?
- 40:18SPEAKER_00: Why can't we cut up and then you know come down?
- 40:21SPEAKER_00: And I was like, you know, that's a really good idea, you know.
- 40:23SPEAKER_00: And so we ended up taking a 10-day trip instead of like a three or four-day trip, and we made it a you know, worth stopping and enjoying it and just checking out new things and took taking the kids on different adventures, and it was a lot of fun, a lot of work, but a lot of fun.
- 40:38SPEAKER_00: And you know, I think as you travel too, you you kind of learn what what to do better next time.
- 40:43SPEAKER_00: I know there's always that next time I'm not doing this, I'm doing this, you know.
- 40:48SPEAKER_01: You mean continuing education?
- 40:50unknown: Yeah, exactly.
- 40:50SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 40:51SPEAKER_01: You learn something every time.
- 40:53SPEAKER_00: Yes, exactly.
- 40:54SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and and I like what you said about the time factor because you don't think about it.
- 40:58SPEAKER_00: Um, you know, you may not think about it ahead of time, but you are wasting the time that you could be enjoying doing some of the things that if you had planned it out, you wouldn't have to sit there worried about how to how or where or when or why.
- 41:08SPEAKER_00: You know, all those questions are already answered.
- 41:10SPEAKER_00: So I think that's great.
- 41:12SPEAKER_00: So I do have a question about being a pageant um coach and a sponsor.
- 41:17SPEAKER_00: Um I know that um you probably have been around hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of participants, and um, it can be probably a lot, but what was your most favorite place that you ever went and did a pageant at?
- 41:32SPEAKER_00: Like where do where was that at?
- 41:36SPEAKER_01: That's a tough question.
- 41:39SPEAKER_01: Um, I didn't do all that many pageants myself.
- 41:42SPEAKER_01: I have um obviously gone a lot with my girls, and um now I do a lot of judging.
- 41:48SPEAKER_01: So I just got back, I had two back to back here in April.
- 41:52SPEAKER_01: Um, so I I go all over to judge.
- 41:55SPEAKER_01: Um typically for me, it's not so much about the place when I go judge, it's about um meeting the girls.
- 42:05SPEAKER_01: That's what my great enjoyment is.
- 42:08SPEAKER_01: So, from the perspective of pageantry itself, for me, it's about the people, not the place.
- 42:15SPEAKER_01: Make sense?
- 42:16SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 42:16SPEAKER_01: Um, if I'm traveling for Ms.
- 42:18SPEAKER_01: World Traveler, which means I'm getting content, I'm looking at it through the eyes of uh what is special here that I would like to pass on to people who are interested.
- 42:27SPEAKER_01: Um, and that's different from when before I did Ms.
- 42:30SPEAKER_01: World Travel.
- 42:31SPEAKER_01: So I had 40 years of travel before I started doing that.
- 42:35SPEAKER_01: So in other words, I was sort of gathering all of that information, storing it.
- 42:40SPEAKER_01: Um, and then when I started doing Ms.
- 42:42SPEAKER_01: World Traveler, which was just in 2022, um, then I already had a great foundation of where do I want to go?
- 42:48SPEAKER_01: What's the most interesting thing here?
- 42:50SPEAKER_01: What do I want to capture that other people might be interested in doing?
- 42:54SPEAKER_01: So that became about the place whereas pageantry was about the people.
- 42:58SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 42:59SPEAKER_00: That makes sense.
- 42:59SPEAKER_00: I could see that being being that way.
- 43:02SPEAKER_00: I always just wondered like um if you ever if you're going to a place that you like you didn't set up or organize or whatever.
- 43:09SPEAKER_00: Um, I mean, I know a lot of them are probably ran mostly about the same.
- 43:14SPEAKER_00: Um, but I I think like with my friend, she said the only thing that was hard for her is sometimes she would go to certain places and they just wouldn't be quite as organized as she would like it to be.
- 43:23SPEAKER_00: And it would just be a little chaotic, you know.
- 43:26SPEAKER_01: It runs the full gamut of hock work and uh whatever.
- 43:32SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 43:33SPEAKER_01: You know, uh I was judging a pageant uh that started like four hours late.
- 43:38SPEAKER_00: Oh geez.
- 43:39SPEAKER_01: Well, I couldn't leave because I was judging, but had I just been like an audience member, you know, after 30 minutes I'd have been gone.
- 43:48SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 43:49SPEAKER_01: You know, I just I I'm really not about wasting my time.
- 43:54SPEAKER_01: Um so but you get all kinds because there's all kinds of people.
- 44:00SPEAKER_01: And then people are drawn to things that sort of fit who they are.
- 44:04SPEAKER_01: You know, we all know people who meander in whatever time.
- 44:09SPEAKER_01: Then then you need to be in a pageant that starts never.
- 44:14SPEAKER_01: You know, if you're a person that it starts at nine o'clock, you're there at nine o'clock ready to go, then you need to be in a pageant that starts at nine o'clock.
- 44:24SPEAKER_00: Now, do you have a favorite part of the pageant that you like the most?
- 44:27SPEAKER_00: Like the dresses, the swimsuits, the like the comments or all the above.
- 44:34unknown: Yeah.
- 44:34SPEAKER_01: Oh, the interview.
- 44:35SPEAKER_01: I love the interview because that's really when you get you get face-to-face time with the girls and um and really get to know them, hear their heart.
- 44:43SPEAKER_01: And I tell this to my girls a lot.
- 44:45SPEAKER_01: In the in a sea of every single young woman is accomplished and well-groomed and putting her best foot forward.
- 44:54SPEAKER_01: You know, she's been coached, she she speaks well, she has all of these things going for her.
- 44:58SPEAKER_01: The only thing that separates one beautiful, intelligent, talented girl from another is the beauty of her heart.
- 45:05SPEAKER_01: And so that's that's what you get to see in the interview is you know, when she opens her heart and says, Now I'm gonna tell you who I am.
- 45:13SPEAKER_01: And I love that part.
- 45:15SPEAKER_01: Then I'm kind of a fashion gal, had my own fashion line, and I'm very into that.
- 45:19SPEAKER_01: So I do love the gowns.
- 45:22SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I I love the gowns too.
- 45:24SPEAKER_00: I think they're a lot of fun.
- 45:25SPEAKER_00: But I've also seen some like really cute swim, like with the younger, like the younger girls.
- 45:30SPEAKER_00: Um the swimsuits are so cute, how they just doll them all up and they bedazzle them and they're just so cute.
- 45:37SPEAKER_01: I I love seeing their personalities come true.
- 45:39SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 45:40SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 45:40SPEAKER_00: Yeah, because some of them are kind of you know more blocky, more blocky, and some of them are more I can't I say they're like like they have that sway on them, you know, that swagger.
- 45:52SPEAKER_01: Yeah, the sway and swagger, yeah.
- 45:53SPEAKER_01: I love it.
- 45:54SPEAKER_00: And you know, you can tell some that are just kind of not as, you know, not as carefree, I guess is the word, you know, unless moxy.
- 46:02SPEAKER_01: So you can tell the ones who have moxy.
- 46:04SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 46:08SPEAKER_00: Well, with that being said, um, is there anything that um you would like to ask or anything that you want to say um in closing out our um episode today?
- 46:17SPEAKER_00: Oh, sure.
- 46:18SPEAKER_01: Well, I would love for your followers to come along on our journey.
- 46:21SPEAKER_01: You know, we we have a lot of fun.
- 46:23SPEAKER_01: We're really all about promoting women, um, trying to inspire women to travel, even if they have to do it by themselves.
- 46:29SPEAKER_01: Um, and so we're on YouTube under Ms.
- 46:32SPEAKER_01: M S, Ms.
- 46:33SPEAKER_01: World Traveler, and we're also on Instagram, Carrie, K-E-R-R-Y, Ms.
- 46:40SPEAKER_01: World Traveler, Carrie Ms.
- 46:41SPEAKER_01: World Traveler, um, Facebook, Carrie Ms.
- 46:43SPEAKER_01: World Traveler.
- 46:44SPEAKER_01: So, you know, to come and enjoy, you know, just we meet people along the way, we have a good time, we go interesting places.
- 46:50SPEAKER_01: Why not join?
- 46:52SPEAKER_00: Yay.
- 46:53SPEAKER_00: And I do put all of that information um in in the episode.
- 46:57SPEAKER_00: I will put all of your information in there too, so they know how to find you and can come and watch.
- 47:01SPEAKER_00: And and I've already watched, I I was been watching you for the last couple of days.
- 47:05SPEAKER_00: I've been so excited to have you on.
- 47:06SPEAKER_01: I'm like, I showed do you have a favorite uh segment so far?
- 47:11SPEAKER_00: Um, no, I just like I was you're like going to these different shops.
- 47:15SPEAKER_00: I love different artwork and different types of and with the different cultures, you're gonna have all different diverse art going on.
- 47:22SPEAKER_00: And I see that also when you go into a store and you there's these little art segments, and I'm like, oh, that's so cool.
- 47:27SPEAKER_00: I would love to go go to those places, you know.
- 47:29SPEAKER_00: And I always think about like when I went to I think it was um like San Francisco, um, downtown or down by the bay or whatever you want to call that, on the wharf.
- 47:38SPEAKER_00: You go down there and they have all the little tiny shops, and some of them are just the same.
- 47:42SPEAKER_00: They're cookie cutter, but they have all the same stuff, and then you find that one unique shop that just has everything original and just handmade and just you know so organic compared to everything that's just in a box, it's cookie cutter.
- 47:54SPEAKER_00: And those are the shops that I like to find.
- 47:56SPEAKER_00: And so I was watching you going into some of those shops where they just had such unique items, and so um, I I was going to different segments, so I couldn't tell you which one was most my favorite, but I would love it when you'd go in the little shops, and we're like, oh, look at that stuff.
- 48:08SPEAKER_00: Like, because I love the originality of art.
- 48:11SPEAKER_00: I think it's wonderful.
- 48:12SPEAKER_01: And that and that's exactly what I'm looking for.
- 48:14SPEAKER_01: That to me, that's part of the inspiration for women to travel, is that's not the stuff that you're getting online.
- 48:21SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 48:22SPEAKER_01: You have to go, you have to go to the place, meet person, see the stuff, pick it up, feel it, you know.
- 48:27SPEAKER_01: I mean, that's part of the beauty of something that's handmade, it's creative, it's original, it's it speaks to that place.
- 48:34SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 48:35SPEAKER_01: Um, so so that's that's why we do it like that.
- 48:39SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 48:39SPEAKER_00: And it's fun.
- 48:40SPEAKER_00: And I and I'm I'm kind of a footy, so I like I like to go to places to check out different types of food, but um, it's not as important to me as like the little shops are.
- 48:49SPEAKER_00: I think that's I get more out of that when I travel.
- 48:52SPEAKER_01: Um and I just felt I like you are the person we made the show for then, Mickey.
- 48:58SPEAKER_01: Yeah, because you know, when I first put this together in 2022, I went out and looked, you know, what is everybody else doing?
- 49:04SPEAKER_01: You should have to know what's already out there.
- 49:06SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 49:06SPEAKER_01: And there were thousands of people telling you where to eat, telling you where to stay, you know, go to this rock and bungee jump off of it and you know, all of that kind of stuff.
- 49:16SPEAKER_01: There was nobody telling you about where to shop and um you know, anything about the style and fashion and art and um antiques and design, you know, that sort of thing.
- 49:25SPEAKER_01: So I I feel like you know, we came to it from a perspective of this is what I love.
- 49:30SPEAKER_01: So I know there's gonna be other people out there who love it too.
- 49:33unknown: Right.
- 49:34SPEAKER_01: See, you're a perfect example.
- 49:37SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I I think I would I'd have a lot of fun traveling around and um just looking at all the different shops.
- 49:43SPEAKER_00: And I always try, I literally try to make it a point to um seek out those little places, you know, those special spots, you know, and and um, you know, check out and meet the artists.
- 49:53SPEAKER_00: And I've done I've done like the glass blowing and and the hand pottery and and the weaving, and I love the basket weaving.
- 50:00SPEAKER_00: Um, I think that's just watching them basket weave um either with straw or whatever they're weaving with.
- 50:07SPEAKER_00: And um I I love that kind of stuff.
- 50:09SPEAKER_00: I especially when they're doing it right there in their shop and you get to see it firsthand.
- 50:13SPEAKER_00: That's even more precious to me than just walking into the shop itself.
- 50:16SPEAKER_00: But I if they're doing it, I'm like, yes.
- 50:19SPEAKER_00: I met a lady right there.
- 50:21SPEAKER_00: I met a lady, this is so interesting.
- 50:23SPEAKER_00: I'm not a big seaweed lover, I don't really care for the food, but um um we went on that 10-day trip I was telling you about, and where we camp, we have a place that let that's always original.
- 50:34SPEAKER_00: We always just camp there because it's easy to find, and there's lots to do around it.
- 50:38SPEAKER_00: But we got there and there was a big group of Indian Indians there.
- 50:42SPEAKER_00: And I, you know, I'm very social, so I'm talking to them, and they had all of these black garbage bags all around with seaweed on them.
- 50:49SPEAKER_00: And I thought, what are they doing?
- 50:50SPEAKER_00: Like, I wonder what they're doing.
- 50:52SPEAKER_00: You know, I'm a curious cat.
- 50:53SPEAKER_00: So I go over there, I'm like, hey, what you doing?
- 50:55SPEAKER_00: What are you doing with that?
- 50:56SPEAKER_00: And she's like, Oh, we're making we're making seaweed.
- 50:58SPEAKER_00: I go, that came right out of the ocean right there.
- 50:59SPEAKER_00: And she said, Yeah, we're making it.
- 51:00SPEAKER_00: So she taught me how to make seaweed right off the ocean.
- 51:03SPEAKER_00: Like it's coming up on shore, and they're pulling it out, and then they're they're they're cleaning it, getting all the the little sea bugs out of it, and I'm like, ooh, interesting.
- 51:12SPEAKER_00: And and we're and I'm watching her, and then she's like, Come over in the morning and we're gonna fry it up because it'll be ready in the morning.
- 51:18SPEAKER_00: I'm like, okay.
- 51:18SPEAKER_00: So I get up and go over to her campground in the morning, and she fries us a big pot of um seaweed right there at the campground, like right on the open fire.
- 51:26SPEAKER_00: It was so amazing.
- 51:27SPEAKER_00: Oh my goodness.
- 51:28SPEAKER_00: I was like, and she's like, I bagged you up some and I want you guys to take it home.
- 51:31SPEAKER_00: And my because my daughter loves seaweed, and she's like, This is really good.
- 51:34SPEAKER_00: And it was the freshest.
- 51:35SPEAKER_00: I've always had store-bought packaged seaweed, completely different taste when it was fresh, homemade.
- 51:42SPEAKER_00: All it was totally different.
- 51:44SPEAKER_00: And I loved the experience.
- 51:46SPEAKER_01: No comparison.
- 51:46SPEAKER_01: Yeah, well, and that was what made it taste so good was the experience.
- 51:50SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 51:50SPEAKER_00: And you know how you always say when your parents put their love in it, you get that extra love.
- 51:55SPEAKER_00: That's what I got from her.
- 51:56SPEAKER_00: That little extra love.
- 51:58SPEAKER_01: Absolutely.
- 51:59SPEAKER_01: Absolutely.
- 51:59SPEAKER_01: Probably the best seaweed you'll you'll ever have.
- 52:02SPEAKER_01: Nothing else will quite quite compare to that.
- 52:04SPEAKER_00: And I don't know that I'll ever just drive to the beach and grab a bunch of kelp and pull it up and start.
- 52:10SPEAKER_00: You know, I mean, I know how to do it.
- 52:13SPEAKER_02: Believe it or not.
- 52:14SPEAKER_00: I actually know how to do it, but I don't think I ever will.
- 52:17SPEAKER_02: I'll let somebody else.
- 52:19SPEAKER_00: But yeah, they said that they travel up and down the coast.
- 52:22SPEAKER_00: Um, every year they would travel up and down the coast, and they do, you know, lots and lots and lots of seaweed.
- 52:27SPEAKER_00: And and that's one thing that they just do.
- 52:29SPEAKER_00: And I never had heard of that before, and I was really interested in it and found it quite to be intriguing.
- 52:34SPEAKER_00: And so I thought what a blessing that was to just happen to be there right when they were there, and our whole family got to experience it, you know.
- 52:41SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
