- 0:09Speaker 1: What's up, everybody. Welcome back to another episode of Bucco Territory,
- 0:13Speaker 1: presented to you by the Foul Territory Network. I'm Noah Hiles.
- 0:16Speaker 1: Joining me as always are my co hosts Josh Harrison
- 0:20Speaker 1: and platinum Key aka Mark. We've got a good show today.
- 0:23Speaker 1: We're gonna talk about the current state of the Pirates.
- 0:25Speaker 1: They're hitting, they're experiencing, i should say, a little bit
- 0:28Speaker 1: of adversity. Jared Jones made some interesting comments this past week.
- 0:33Speaker 1: He's still rehabing in nol Tuona. We're gonna talk about
- 0:36Speaker 1: him and how he can potentially help the team this year.
- 0:39Speaker 1: And as always, we will round out our Monday show
- 0:43Speaker 1: with our segment Key of the Week, presented to you
- 0:46Speaker 1: by the one and only mister platinum Key. But Fellas,
- 0:49Speaker 1: like I said, we got to start off with the
- 0:51Speaker 1: current state of affairs. The Pirates suffer their second sweep
- 0:54Speaker 1: of the season, this one coming over the weekend of
- 0:56Speaker 1: the Philadelphia Phillies. Friday Night's game look to be going
- 0:59Speaker 1: great until it wasn't. They lose an extra innings, They
- 1:03Speaker 1: get shut out the next two days and the bad
- 1:06Speaker 1: news keeps coming. In addition to being swept their bullpen stinks,
- 1:12Speaker 1: their offense gets shut out back to back games, and
- 1:15Speaker 1: now Ryan O'Hearn, one of, if not the best hitter
- 1:19Speaker 1: in the lineup this season, goes on the il with
- 1:22Speaker 1: a hip injury. He's gonna miss around four weeks, is
- 1:26Speaker 1: what general manager Ben Cherrington estimated on his weekly radio
- 1:30Speaker 1: show on Sunday. So, Josh, I'll start with you here.
- 1:34Speaker 1: You know, you know more than anyone in the major
- 1:36Speaker 1: leagues when it rains at pourse. That's why they give
- 1:38Speaker 1: the cliche, don't get too high, don't get too low.
- 1:42Speaker 1: But right now it seems like the universe is getting
- 1:44Speaker 1: too low on the pirates. They're just dealing them a
- 1:47Speaker 1: whole bunch of, you know, tough blows to the abdomen.
- 1:51Speaker 1: When you're in a clubhouse in a situation like this
- 1:54Speaker 1: where it just seems like you can't catch a break,
- 1:56Speaker 1: nothing's working, you have an off day, then you have
- 1:59Speaker 1: a row trip that marks the beginning of a thirteen
- 2:02Speaker 1: day stretch with no breaks.
- 2:05Speaker 2: Yep.
- 2:06Speaker 1: Yeah, last off day in May is the day this
- 2:08Speaker 1: comes out. What are you saying to the boys in
- 2:11Speaker 1: the clubhouse in this type of situation.
- 2:15Speaker 3: You gonna keep keep grinding you know, you obviously know
- 2:19Speaker 3: where you stand, and you know it's it's a situation
- 2:22Speaker 3: where this is where you really get tested with your depth,
- 2:25Speaker 3: and unfortunately it just happens to be, you know, one
- 2:28Speaker 3: of the key members, if not one of you know,
- 2:31Speaker 3: the most important in the lineup. Just as you said,
- 2:33Speaker 3: he's offered so much flexibility in that lineup, driving in runs.
- 2:37Speaker 4: Just being a complete hitter.
- 2:38Speaker 3: But you know, it immediately goes into something that this
- 2:43Speaker 3: off this team was built around offense, and his production
- 2:46Speaker 3: is something that is going to be missed for these
- 2:48Speaker 3: four weeks or however you know long keys out. But
- 2:52Speaker 3: it's also a situation of somebody else has an opportunity
- 2:55Speaker 3: to stand up or you know, step up and make
- 2:58Speaker 3: the presence felt and not saying from an individualistic oh
- 3:02Speaker 3: I'm trying to go out here and still Ryan on
- 3:04Speaker 3: Hearn's spot, but you know there's gonna be an opportunity
- 3:06Speaker 3: for somebody, you know, to get more at bats that
- 3:10Speaker 3: necessarily wasn't going to get them, and not necessarily one person.
- 3:12Speaker 3: It might be by committee. And these are times where
- 3:16Speaker 3: it's like, hey, man, who's ever in that spot? Whether
- 3:18Speaker 3: you know you got you know Righty's or you face
- 3:20Speaker 3: some lefties PLATOONA, there's a young prospect that gets called up.
- 3:25Speaker 3: One thing that has to be known for whoever that is,
- 3:27Speaker 3: is like, don't think that you have to replace his production,
- 3:30Speaker 3: you know, because his production is what it is and
- 3:33Speaker 3: he's being paid what he's being.
- 3:35Speaker 4: Paid for a reason. But those guys that are stepping.
- 3:37Speaker 3: In get an opportunity, you know, to step into a
- 3:41Speaker 3: role that, as I said, otherwise they weren't prepared for.
- 3:44Speaker 3: And sometimes that can be a joke because at the
- 3:47Speaker 3: end of the day, the other team now is making
- 3:50Speaker 3: an adjustment where it's like, Okay, we no longer have
- 3:52Speaker 3: to face Ryan o'harn. But at the same time, you
- 3:55Speaker 3: might catch lightning in a bottle and some other guys
- 3:57Speaker 3: that are filling in, and it's like, oh man, how
- 3:59Speaker 3: do we matchup for you know, this rriety, this left
- 4:02Speaker 3: too we don't really know much about, or man, this
- 4:04Speaker 3: guy hasn't done much. But at the same time, you know,
- 4:07Speaker 3: getting consistent plan time you might see somebody that's able to,
- 4:11Speaker 3: you know, bridge that gap for one O'Hearn's back, and
- 4:13Speaker 3: you might have to get creative. But at the same time,
- 4:16Speaker 3: you know, in that locker room guy's way.
- 4:19Speaker 4: Keep going.
- 4:20Speaker 3: Man, we we gotta you know, write the you know,
- 4:22Speaker 3: not necessarily right the ship, but you know O'Hearn is
- 4:25Speaker 3: a big part of this team. Whoever is in there
- 4:28Speaker 3: hold you know, hold it down and know that the
- 4:32Speaker 3: guys around you got your back.
- 4:33Speaker 2: Yeah, next man up right?
- 4:35Speaker 1: Well go ahead, now, well, Mark, I was just going
- 4:38Speaker 1: to tee you up with something here. So, like we
- 4:40Speaker 1: just got Josh's in depth player perspective, I want to
- 4:43Speaker 1: know how the fans are thinking. I mean because because honestly,
- 4:47Speaker 1: I mean, it's it hasn't been like the perfect season
- 4:50Speaker 1: by any standpoint, but I do feel like it's been
- 4:53Speaker 1: relatively smooth sailing as far as.
- 4:56Speaker 2: It's been good for the big picture.
- 4:57Speaker 1: Yeah, like it's been a fun season so far. They've
- 5:00Speaker 1: had the Cone Connor Griffins here. Steen's has been great.
- 5:03Speaker 1: I mean, save like a couple of outings here and there.
- 5:05Speaker 1: And I mean, yeah, they have their flaws as a team,
- 5:08Speaker 1: but so does every other team.
- 5:09Speaker 2: They've still won more games than they've lost.
- 5:12Speaker 1: Yeah, right, And so as a fan right now, where
- 5:16Speaker 1: are you on the panic meter? How worried are you
- 5:18Speaker 1: about this situation? Because it's really their first true test
- 5:22Speaker 1: of adversity.
- 5:23Speaker 2: Right, That's exactly where I was going to go, because
- 5:25Speaker 2: this team's been relatively healthy. I mean, we had the
- 5:28Speaker 2: Jared Triolo injury to start the year, and that was
- 5:31Speaker 2: where we were saying, like, Jared trio is probably the
- 5:33Speaker 2: one guy on this team that can't get hurt right
- 5:35Speaker 2: now given the depth at they're base. But Nick and
- 5:37Speaker 2: Zalees stepped up and for a part of the time,
- 5:40Speaker 2: Nick York stepped up as well. So those guys embraced
- 5:43Speaker 2: that opportunity and seized on it and capitalized on it.
- 5:47Speaker 2: And now with Oharn going out, yeah, obviously we're not
- 5:50Speaker 2: going to get all star level production out of whoever
- 5:53Speaker 2: steps up into right field now, but you have an
- 5:56Speaker 2: opportunity to see password. I mean a lot of people
- 5:59Speaker 2: in my common it's been saying where is Justins and
- 6:02Speaker 2: Garcia now, like, especially after this I hurt an injury,
- 6:07Speaker 2: but at like yeah, so as a fan the panic button,
- 6:11Speaker 2: you gotta feel it a little bit. Just this series, Uh,
- 6:15Speaker 2: I think it was since like the six or seventh
- 6:17Speaker 2: inning of Friday Night's game, they've been outscored twenty to one,
- 6:21Speaker 2: where they just gave up a six nothing lead Friday
- 6:25Speaker 2: Night and then went on to lose two games back
- 6:27Speaker 2: to back, six to nothing. Like as a fan, that
- 6:30Speaker 2: doesn't make you feel great, especially when it's the bullpen
- 6:33Speaker 2: that's giving it up, and it's like, wait, where did
- 6:36Speaker 2: this offense go that we've been watching and relying on
- 6:40Speaker 2: for a lot of these wins. So obviously I'm I'm
- 6:43Speaker 2: not gonna hit the panic button quite yet. There's plenty
- 6:46Speaker 2: of good things going on, but it's a little concerning
- 6:50Speaker 2: because if you're a good team, they would have at
- 6:53Speaker 2: least taken one of these games. And it's a it's
- 6:57Speaker 2: you're not gonna judge a team based off one series.
- 6:59Speaker 2: But when a lot of these series keep happening where
- 7:02Speaker 2: it's you feel like it's games that they could have won,
- 7:04Speaker 2: they should have won, that just slips through the cracks.
- 7:08Speaker 2: As those start to pile up, you get a little
- 7:11Speaker 2: bit more discourage each time.
- 7:15Speaker 1: Allow me to be the one that provides some optimism
- 7:18Speaker 1: about Pirates Baseball. I thought Mark would do that. No,
- 7:21Speaker 1: but let's put this into context a little bit. Friday's
- 7:25Speaker 1: loss was the worst loss they've had in a long time,
- 7:29Speaker 1: not just to season. I mean, that's like all things
- 7:32Speaker 1: considered like the stadium's packed. Braxton looked good. You crush
- 7:37Speaker 1: the baseball like Europe six nothing. You should have won
- 7:40Speaker 1: that game the next two days. I mean they got
- 7:42Speaker 1: shut up by Christopher Sanchez and Zach Wheeler.
- 7:46Speaker 2: That happens.
- 7:47Speaker 1: Yeah, the best two are the top five pitchers in
- 7:50Speaker 1: the National League.
- 7:51Speaker 2: Man, there's a reason Sanchez was second in SI young Yeah.
- 7:54Speaker 1: Yeah, and Wheeler was second in SI Young two years ago.
- 7:57Speaker 1: So like it's that's just what it is, man, and
- 8:00Speaker 1: like not making excuses. Good teams need to find a
- 8:03Speaker 1: way to beat cy Young rights like the Philadelphia Phillies
- 8:06Speaker 1: did today. But and then on the other token, I mean,
- 8:10Speaker 1: the Phillies are the hottest team in Major League Baseball
- 8:12Speaker 1: right now. Their season was dead, they fired their manager,
- 8:15Speaker 1: and now they look like the Philadelphia Phillies again. And
- 8:18Speaker 1: I mean they have the hottest hitter in the sport
- 8:21Speaker 1: right now with Kyle Schwarber. No one wants to face
- 8:25Speaker 1: that guy. The guys hitting around him are absolute studs.
- 8:29Speaker 1: I mean, you got Harper. Their top three hitters are
- 8:33Speaker 1: two Hall of famers. In my opinion, I think Scharber's
- 8:35Speaker 1: on that track and Harper's already there. I mean, Brandon
- 8:38Speaker 1: marsh is one of the best hitters in the National
- 8:40Speaker 1: League this year. He's in the middle of that lineup.
- 8:42Speaker 1: You got a veteran like a Doulas Garcia, Trey Turner's
- 8:45Speaker 1: at the top. I mean, it's a really go There's
- 8:47Speaker 1: a reason they're in the playoffs every single year. It's
- 8:51Speaker 1: a good team. You got swept by a good team.
- 8:53Speaker 1: It's okay that happens. And as far as you know,
- 8:57Speaker 1: looking forward, Oharan is a loss. But at the same time,
- 9:02Speaker 1: position player depth is like their biggest strength. Ring he
- 9:06Speaker 1: plays first base in right field. We've said on the
- 9:08Speaker 1: show a million times they have a million people who
- 9:11Speaker 1: can play those positions. Spencer Horowitz can be your everyday
- 9:14Speaker 1: first baseman, and I think he's earned the opportunity to
- 9:17Speaker 1: face left handed pitching a little bit more because he's
- 9:20Speaker 1: quietly been one of their better hitters this season. And
- 9:22Speaker 1: then in right field, you have Reynolds as an option
- 9:26Speaker 1: with Mangham as the everyday guy and left or you
- 9:28Speaker 1: can call someone up. You have Jared Triolo where they've
- 9:31Speaker 1: been playing him the last couple of days. We're gonna
- 9:33Speaker 1: talk more about right field later in the show, but
- 9:35Speaker 1: it's not like, you know, you're trotting out guys who
- 9:38Speaker 1: don't belong in the major leagues, which has been the
- 9:41Speaker 1: reality for this franchise for a while when you lose
- 9:44Speaker 1: a key player. Even when they've been competitive, there were
- 9:46Speaker 1: times where they just didn't have the depth at certain spots,
- 9:51Speaker 1: and they don't have depth in certain spots. But this
- 9:53Speaker 1: was a position where they were kind of logjam. So yes,
- 9:57Speaker 1: they need guys to step up. They need Marcelo zoom
- 10:00Speaker 1: Ozuna now more than ever to be a force in
- 10:03Speaker 1: the middle of that lineup. They need Jake Mangham to
- 10:06Speaker 1: get going, they need other guys. But it's it's not
- 10:08Speaker 1: as dire as you know it might seem on paper,
- 10:12Speaker 1: I guess. So I think that wraps up the first segment.
- 10:15Speaker 1: We're going to take a quick break. When we come back,
- 10:17Speaker 1: we're going to talk about a guy who might provide
- 10:20Speaker 1: some help in a bit, although we don't know how.
- 10:22Speaker 1: His name's Jared Jones. We'll talk about him soon.
- 10:26Speaker 5: Some wireless plans can get a little bit crazy, a
- 10:30Speaker 5: little bit off the charts. Expensive Mint Mobile can get

- 10:44Speaker 6: to keep more mobile plan down and mint mobile is

- 10:52Speaker 6: bucks a month.

- 10:56Speaker 5: if you like bougie drinks. All plans come with high
- 10:59Speaker 5: speed data, unlimited talking text delivered on the nation's largest

- 11:23Speaker 5: and fees extra. See mint mobile for details.
- 11:28Speaker 1: All right. Jared Jones pitching it out Tuna. He made
- 11:32Speaker 1: a second start with the curve on Sunday of his
- 11:35Speaker 1: stat line here. Four and a third innings, three hits,
- 11:38Speaker 1: two runs, all earned, two walk seven strikeouts. He retired
- 11:40Speaker 1: his first nine batters he faced through scoreless four innings.
- 11:44Speaker 1: One of the runs charge of Jones is in the
- 11:45Speaker 1: fifth scored after he departed Jared Jones. That's not why
- 11:50Speaker 1: we're talking about him, though. Jared Jones is fine. He's
- 11:53Speaker 1: looked really good in his rehab outings. Where he didn't
- 11:56Speaker 1: necessarily look great was his media availability after an outing
- 12:02Speaker 1: earlier this week. Last week, I should say in Altuna
- 12:06Speaker 1: where Riley Holsinger, local TV reporter in Altuna, good buddy
- 12:11Speaker 1: of mine, asked him a question if he was going
- 12:13Speaker 1: to pitch out of the bullpen if they had talked
- 12:15Speaker 1: about that, and Jared just said no. Next question, is there.
- 12:22Speaker 6: Any change for a bullen you get back to Pittsburgh.
- 12:25Speaker 4: Yeah, I'll throw a bullpen with Pittsburgh. I mean, like
- 12:27Speaker 4: when you work.
- 12:27Speaker 6: Out of the ball.
- 12:31Speaker 1: Next question, And if you look at the video which
- 12:34Speaker 1: we'll have in this episode on YouTube, if you're watching
- 12:38Speaker 1: and it's also been plastered all over social media, you
- 12:41Speaker 1: can see, I mean, Jared's having this happy go luck.
- 12:44Speaker 1: You look on his face in the moment someone brought
- 12:46Speaker 1: up the B word, it all changed.
- 12:49Speaker 2: He didn't even recognized it was like going to the bullpen.
- 12:52Speaker 2: He's like yeah, yeah, He was like, yeah, I'll.
- 12:54Speaker 1: Throw a bullpen. Yeah. And look, there are certain b
- 12:57Speaker 1: words that you bring up around the man and it'll
- 12:59Speaker 1: listen reaction. But Bullpen should not be one of them.
- 13:03Speaker 1: All right, he's a major league pitcher. So Mark, I'll
- 13:06Speaker 1: start with you. What was your reaction to Jared Jones's
- 13:08Speaker 1: reaction and the things that followed afterward? Yeah, or you know,
- 13:14Speaker 1: before I throw that over to you, let me just
- 13:16Speaker 1: point out, Yeah, there are certain people that rush to
- 13:19Speaker 1: Jones's defense saying, oh, they weren't supposed to ask him
- 13:22Speaker 1: about this, and that wasn't the case. He was asked
- 13:26Speaker 1: a very fair question. He did not handle it properly,
- 13:30Speaker 1: and the pirates in return, have had days now to
- 13:35Speaker 1: kind of address it, to say no, this is what
- 13:37Speaker 1: he's doing, and they haven't done that. So still where
- 13:42Speaker 1: this show's airing on May eighteenth, Jared's probably back in
- 13:46Speaker 1: like the next week or two. Yeah, No, one seems
- 13:49Speaker 1: to know how he's going to be used. Mark, how
- 13:52Speaker 1: you feeling about all this?
- 13:53Speaker 2: Yeah? I mean it was disappointing to see as a fan, right, Like,
- 13:57Speaker 2: I have two takes on it. One, I kind of
- 14:00Speaker 2: love the fire because that's just like authentically Jerry Jones,
- 14:04Speaker 2: Like he's going to go out there and be that
- 14:07Speaker 2: kind of just jerk on the mound, just like pitch
- 14:10Speaker 2: with a little bit of fire, right like, and you
- 14:13Speaker 2: kind of want your professional athletes like you don't get
- 14:15Speaker 2: to that level without being that kind of like belief
- 14:20Speaker 2: in yourself where you think, like, no, I am the
- 14:22Speaker 2: best pitcher out there, why wouldn't I not be in
- 14:25Speaker 2: the starting rotation? So I like that mindset, but you
- 14:29Speaker 2: can't communicate that with that kind of question. Like you
- 14:32Speaker 2: can believe that all you want, but you need to
- 14:34Speaker 2: be saying like, oh, yeah, I mean, I'll do whatever
- 14:36Speaker 2: this team needs. It's all you got to say, at
- 14:40Speaker 2: least publicly. And that's not what he said publicly, which
- 14:46Speaker 2: is concerning because it's not like there's a clear spot
- 14:49Speaker 2: in this rotation for him to waltz rip back into
- 14:52Speaker 2: after one year in the majors and then a year off.
- 14:57Speaker 2: So yeah, I don't know what were your takeaways.
- 15:02Speaker 4: Next question?
- 15:03Speaker 3: Yeah, no, just everything that you guys have said.
- 15:11Speaker 4: You know, it looked like he was called off guard,
- 15:14Speaker 4: and as.
- 15:15Speaker 3: You mentioned, he could have handled it a completely different
- 15:18Speaker 3: way because Riley, I'm sure it wasn't trying to cause
- 15:21Speaker 3: a stare out of him. You know, it's a guy
- 15:23Speaker 3: that otherwise you said in Altuna, Who's like, man, I
- 15:27Speaker 3: don't know how many opportunities I'm going to get to
- 15:28Speaker 3: ask a question.
- 15:29Speaker 4: Let me try to figure anything out.
- 15:31Speaker 3: And at the same time, you take the context of
- 15:34Speaker 3: Ben's you know comments, you know a few weeks back
- 15:37Speaker 3: of we might have to get creative. You know, Ben
- 15:40Speaker 3: himself didn't commit to him being in. They start in rotation,
- 15:43Speaker 3: and so that that is a valid question because it's
- 15:47Speaker 3: not like he's just oh, man, I wonder if you're
- 15:50Speaker 3: going to come out the bullpen. So there has been
- 15:52Speaker 3: some things that you know, I have been said that
- 15:55Speaker 3: could cots for people to want to ask that question as.
- 15:58Speaker 2: It's a question that we have a guy in. The
- 15:59Speaker 2: answer to you, yeah, and.
- 16:01Speaker 3: I think there's a reason why, just because, as you said,
- 16:05Speaker 3: everything is fluid, you can't commit to anything. But even
- 16:08Speaker 3: for him, you know, it could have been handled differently
- 16:10Speaker 3: just to say, hey, man, I my job is to
- 16:13Speaker 3: get myself ready to get back to the team. You know,
- 16:15Speaker 3: I got to get healthy before I start worrying about.
- 16:17Speaker 4: You know what I mean.
- 16:18Speaker 3: But at the same time, these are things that he
- 16:21Speaker 3: will learn from because at the end of the day,
- 16:23Speaker 3: coming out the bullpen, don't mean you're coming in the
- 16:26Speaker 3: fifth or sixth inning. They could potentially just say, hey,
- 16:29Speaker 3: we want to start with an opener for you that's
- 16:31Speaker 3: still coming out of the bullpen, but you're acting as
- 16:33Speaker 3: a starter, you know. But at the same time, communication
- 16:37Speaker 3: will clear all of this up. And behind closed doors,
- 16:40Speaker 3: I hope that there's something that they're talking because obviously
- 16:44Speaker 3: right now out in the open, it's a lot of
- 16:46Speaker 3: questions marks what they're going to do and this or that.
- 16:48Speaker 3: But if behind closed doors they know what the agenda is,
- 16:52Speaker 3: this can easily be you know handled. But you know,
- 16:58Speaker 3: right now, it seems as if they're still on to
- 17:00Speaker 3: keep their options open because this is a guy, as
- 17:01Speaker 3: you mentioned, only one year and missed the full year.
- 17:04Speaker 3: Do they and we've had this conversation, you know, your
- 17:07Speaker 3: term slow cooking Noah out of protection. So sometimes what
- 17:12Speaker 3: might the player might not you know, what the player
- 17:14Speaker 3: might envision might not be the best.
- 17:17Speaker 4: You know course that they want to take.
- 17:19Speaker 3: And a lot of times they're just not going to
- 17:21Speaker 3: commit the saying you're going to go right into the
- 17:23Speaker 3: starting pitching rotation, which has not been an issue.
- 17:25Speaker 4: You know, where does it make sense?
- 17:27Speaker 3: So I got they're going to have to get creative,
- 17:30Speaker 3: as Ben said, and even when he said that, Jared
- 17:33Speaker 3: the whole time is probably like men, they can say
- 17:34Speaker 3: what they want to say.
- 17:35Speaker 4: I'm coming back and I'm going to be the star,
- 17:36Speaker 4: and that's just the competitive nature.
- 17:38Speaker 3: But you know, these are things where you don't want
- 17:41Speaker 3: the cause of divide in that locker room. And I
- 17:43Speaker 3: don't think it will, but as I said, I think
- 17:46Speaker 3: it will cause Jared to you know, think about how
- 17:50Speaker 3: he answered certain questions or response.
- 17:54Speaker 1: It's ironic that we're talking about what we're talking about
- 17:57Speaker 1: because I'm trying to think of the right thing to
- 18:01Speaker 1: say here, because there's there's a lot that you can't say.
- 18:03Speaker 1: I mean, I think Jared Jones, it's a bad look
- 18:08Speaker 1: for him. I'll just say it. I mean, this is this,
- 18:10Speaker 1: this is the look of an immature player. And I
- 18:14Speaker 1: mean he's young, and that's gonna happen. Like people slip
- 18:17Speaker 1: up and say things. But again it's it's you can't
- 18:22Speaker 1: let people know that, you know, like never never let
- 18:25Speaker 1: him see you hurt, you know, right or right?
- 18:28Speaker 3: Yeah, And I'm not cutting you off and I'm not
- 18:30Speaker 3: vouching for him, but it's ultimately the world we live in,
- 18:34Speaker 3: the society, we live in, the entitlement and not he's
- 18:38Speaker 3: not entitled to speak that, but that's what we have
- 18:42Speaker 3: ultimately deemed as right. No matter if you you know,
- 18:46Speaker 3: guys are like, man, get you some years in before
- 18:49Speaker 3: you you.
- 18:49Speaker 4: Know, do that.
- 18:50Speaker 3: But at the same time, yeah, there's no longer guys
- 18:53Speaker 3: around to teach him that way.
- 18:55Speaker 1: That's that's the thing. This is a product of an
- 18:58Speaker 1: organization who probably did media train their prospects. Yeah, good
- 19:02Speaker 1: enough while he was in the system. I will give
- 19:05Speaker 1: the Pirates credit. I think they're trending in the right direction.
- 19:10Speaker 1: I'm getting off track there, but like, yeah, like I
- 19:12Speaker 1: think that there is Like you also got to look
- 19:16Speaker 1: at like Jared's timeline right, Like he was drafted during COVID,
- 19:19Speaker 1: he came out of high school. It was just a
- 19:22Speaker 1: weird transition period of like the world and baseball and everything,
- 19:26Speaker 1: and there might be some immaturity there or just not
- 19:30Speaker 1: seeing how things are done the right way. Like I
- 19:34Speaker 1: look at Jared professional track, what veterans was he around
- 19:42Speaker 1: that showed him that pulled him aside? Like Josh, you
- 19:44Speaker 1: add vets that when you got to the Major league clubhouse.
- 19:48Speaker 1: They showed you how to do things. They showed you
- 19:49Speaker 1: how to tip the clubbi's, they showed you how to
- 19:53Speaker 1: you know, treat the traveling secretary, the pr people, the media,
- 19:57Speaker 1: all of these things. Because when you're joining a when
- 20:00Speaker 1: you're when you're making it to the big leagues, those
- 20:02Speaker 1: are the those aren't the things on your mind. You're
- 20:04Speaker 1: trying to throw a hundred, We're hit one hundred, run
- 20:07Speaker 1: the bases. Yeah, but these these are parts of the job.
- 20:10Speaker 1: These are parts of the job, and they make the
- 20:13Speaker 1: baseball part of your job harder when you screw them up.
- 20:16Speaker 1: And right now, yeah, like the Pirates didn't need this,
- 20:20Speaker 1: They didn't need a guy who they need Jared Jones
- 20:24Speaker 1: on their team and they need to use Jared Jones
- 20:27Speaker 1: however that makes them better. And right now, Jared Jones
- 20:31Speaker 1: out of the bullpen is probably a win win for
- 20:34Speaker 1: both sides. Jared will eventually be a starting pitcher, but
- 20:41Speaker 1: why would you rush? Why are you having him start
- 20:43Speaker 1: in May only to put him in the bullpen in September?
- 20:47Speaker 1: Soul probably work the other way around, And for Jared,
- 20:52Speaker 1: like that's frustrating, But dude, they're gonna baby you because
- 20:57Speaker 1: your arm almost exploded. Like they they're looking out for you,
- 21:02Speaker 1: and they're also looking out for themselves. And I love
- 21:05Speaker 1: the intensity that Jared Jones brings them ound full disclosure.
- 21:09Speaker 1: He can be a pain in the ass to deal
- 21:11Speaker 1: with sometimes, but I respect that. I like pictures that
- 21:15Speaker 1: have that f you mentality. They're very fun to cover.
- 21:18Speaker 1: And when Jared and everything's going well for Jared, he's funny.
- 21:22Speaker 1: He's kind of a smart ass, but it's fine. And
- 21:25Speaker 1: when he's miserable, everyone's gonna be miserable. And I don't
- 21:29Speaker 1: take that personally. That's how pictures are sometimes, and that's
- 21:32Speaker 1: totally cool. But this was unnecessary. Man. You created a
- 21:35Speaker 1: mess that wasn't needed, not only for yourself, but for
- 21:39Speaker 1: your team that desperately needs you back, for your GM,
- 21:42Speaker 1: for your manager.
- 21:44Speaker 4: I just e've been your staff. You know you got yeah.
- 21:48Speaker 1: All you Even if he just said, I'll say this,
- 21:52Speaker 1: you know, if that question was asked and he just said, like,
- 21:55Speaker 1: the competitor in me wants to be a starter. I
- 21:58Speaker 1: want to be out there because that's what I trained for,
- 22:01Speaker 1: That's what I do. But we'll see what happens. That's
- 22:05Speaker 1: not necessarily even the most ideal answer for the pirates,
- 22:08Speaker 1: but it's better than what happened.
- 22:09Speaker 3: And there's nothing wrong with that because that leaves everything
- 22:13Speaker 3: open ended, like you.
- 22:15Speaker 4: Know what I mean and not saying it, but yeah.
- 22:18Speaker 1: To have the frame of mind where it's like you're
- 22:20Speaker 1: gonna try to force someone's hand is just it's not
- 22:24Speaker 1: the right way to go about it, probably, and I'm
- 22:27Speaker 1: sure he wishes he had that one back. I don't
- 22:29Speaker 1: think Jared Jones is a bad teammate. Like I said, Yeah,
- 22:33Speaker 1: he can be a little frustrating to deal with for
- 22:35Speaker 1: everyone at times, but so was Aj Burnett at times,
- 22:39Speaker 1: you know, so were so many other players. And you
- 22:42Speaker 1: look at the smile that just showed up on Josh's face,
- 22:44Speaker 1: like you need a little bit of that fu, especially
- 22:46Speaker 1: when you're a five foot ten guy throwing a hundred.
- 22:49Speaker 1: You're an underdog. You got to have that chip on
- 22:51Speaker 1: your shoulder. So there's nothing wrong with that. But that
- 22:53Speaker 1: was a miscalculation I think on his end, or an
- 22:56Speaker 1: emotional reaction that Josh says he will learn from. I
- 23:00Speaker 1: would say, I hope he learns from that, and that's
- 23:03Speaker 1: what I'll just say. I hope he learned because I
- 23:05Speaker 1: can't continue to happen.
- 23:07Speaker 3: I think you will, just because if you look at
- 23:09Speaker 3: the context of it, it wasn't even in the big
- 23:12Speaker 3: league clubhouse, and it's gaining distraction.
- 23:14Speaker 4: So imagine if he was to do that to it,
- 23:17Speaker 4: you know what I mean.
- 23:18Speaker 1: So that's why, brother, I know.
- 23:20Speaker 4: That's why I said.
- 23:20Speaker 3: I think he's gonna learn from it because this heat
- 23:24Speaker 3: because guess what they tell you training, Hey, this stuff
- 23:27Speaker 3: is gonna these videos, they're they're going to live on.
- 23:30Speaker 4: So I think that's something.
- 23:32Speaker 3: Whether he knows it or not, I think he just
- 23:33Speaker 3: got some media training that he didn't sign up.
- 23:37Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, Josh, I don't know about you. I
- 23:40Speaker 1: can't recall a SoundBite like that ever coming from Altuna.
- 23:44Speaker 4: Again, everybody is their own person.
- 23:49Speaker 3: But it happens, He's gonna be fine because yeah, the
- 23:53Speaker 3: guy's in the clubhouse knowing.
- 23:54Speaker 4: But at the same time, he's gonna he's gonna learn
- 23:57Speaker 4: when he can do that, not do it, because.
- 24:03Speaker 3: That could have been something where, you know, get some
- 24:05Speaker 3: years or you can turn that into a joke, but
- 24:07Speaker 3: right now is not the time for it.
- 24:09Speaker 1: All right, So we're gonna take another quick break. But
- 24:12Speaker 1: when we come back Mark's Platinum Key of the Week
- 24:15Speaker 1: as we round out today's show.
- 24:22Speaker 4: Where it's brought to you by FanDuel Baseball Fans.

- 24:38Speaker 3: a chance at extra winnings. It's just another reason why
- 24:41Speaker 3: fandel is the home of home runs. Who you guys
- 24:43Speaker 3: got for home run?
- 24:46Speaker 1: Let's go Carter Griffin. He's been barreling the ball. I
- 24:51Speaker 1: think he's due for another.
- 24:53Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm going to go Brandon Law should have had
- 24:55Speaker 2: one in Sunday's game. I guess it was a little short,
- 24:58Speaker 2: but you know, maybe the same that there be fan
- 25:00Speaker 2: interference and we'll get all the way over on its own.
- 25:03Speaker 3: So what about you, Josh, I'm gonna go Brian Reynolds Love.
- 25:07Speaker 1: It seems like you always.
- 25:09Speaker 4: Yeah, I'm going b raight.
- 25:12Speaker 3: Okay, So are you ready to play your game? Head

- 25:49Speaker 2: All right, in this week's Key of the week here,
- 25:53Speaker 2: we kind of alluded to it earlier in the episode
- 25:56Speaker 2: with the adversity striking with Ryan o'hearing going down. But
- 26:00Speaker 2: my key of the week is whoever steps up into
- 26:03Speaker 2: this left field or right field role sees on that opportunity,
- 26:07Speaker 2: like just like what Nick and Zales did at third base.
- 26:09Speaker 2: If it's Justinston Garcia, I mean he might have a
- 26:14Speaker 2: full month in MLB finally where he can show what
- 26:17Speaker 2: he can do, make an impact, make a case for
- 26:19Speaker 2: himself to stick on this roster. Win Ohrn gets back
- 26:22Speaker 2: and claim that fourth or fifth outfield spot, or if
- 26:26Speaker 2: it's Ezmrelyn Valdez, maybe he gets a shot. You know,
- 26:29Speaker 2: maybe they because Joe Justtinston and Garcia just got injured.
- 26:33Speaker 2: You know, he just got he finished his rehab assignment.
- 26:36Speaker 2: Maybe you keep him in Triple A, gat him a
- 26:38Speaker 2: little bit more acclimated. Whereas Ezmralan Valdez hasn't had a
- 26:42Speaker 2: shot in MLB yet. Maybe you want to showcase him
- 26:45Speaker 2: a little bit. We were just talking in this past
- 26:47Speaker 2: episode where he may be someone that you look to
- 26:50Speaker 2: trade at the deadline if you want to add to
- 26:52Speaker 2: the bullpen. Could be a potential trade chip. So maybe
- 26:57Speaker 2: it'says Merilan Valdes. But whoever that player is that they're
- 26:59Speaker 2: going to ounce on Tuesday, seize that role. Fill in.
- 27:05Speaker 2: If you can really step up, that would be massive
- 27:08Speaker 2: for this team. Obviously you're not going to reproduce what
- 27:11Speaker 2: Brian o'haran was doing, uh, but just being a competitive player,
- 27:16Speaker 2: not being below replacement, you know, showing that you belong
- 27:19Speaker 2: in the big leagues with that opportunity, that's that's my
- 27:22Speaker 2: key of the week.
- 27:24Speaker 1: Yeah, just to build off that. I think there is
- 27:26Speaker 1: a tremendous opportunity for a slew of young outfielders here.
- 27:30Speaker 1: Jake Mangham is going to be an everyday player again
- 27:32Speaker 1: something that you know, a lot of people felt that
- 27:34Speaker 1: he should have been the whole season, and yeah, they're
- 27:37Speaker 1: clearly going to call up an outfielder. It's, I think,
- 27:40Speaker 1: either going to be Valdez or Garcia and whoever gets
- 27:46Speaker 1: this opportunity, it's it's it's it's an opportunity to stay,
- 27:49Speaker 1: right because the Pirates. The Pirates would love to be
- 27:52Speaker 1: in a situation where it's like, all right, well what
- 27:53Speaker 1: do we do now in o'hearnay. Yeah, like they would
- 27:55Speaker 1: love to do that because that's good, especially with those
- 27:58Speaker 1: types of players, Like they would love to be forced
- 28:00Speaker 1: in a situation where it's like we don't want to
- 28:02Speaker 1: send these guys back down, like they're here and they're
- 28:05Speaker 1: here to stay. I would think they probably feel that
- 28:08Speaker 1: way more toward Garcia than as Merlin. I think they'd
- 28:11Speaker 1: be more cool with having Valdez be the updown guy.
- 28:15Speaker 1: But like, I don't think it's a bad thing if
- 28:17Speaker 1: Garcia comes up here and he's here to stay, because
- 28:21Speaker 1: you know, he's a good defensive outfielder, whereas as Merlin's
- 28:25Speaker 1: not really great with the glove. So yeah, there's a
- 28:29Speaker 1: huge opportunity, and this is a team that I think
- 28:32Speaker 1: could use a little bit of a spark, and that
- 28:35Speaker 1: comes through call ups. That comes through a new person
- 28:39Speaker 1: in the clubhouse, either via trade or I don't know
- 28:42Speaker 1: if it necessarily comes a ton through waiver claims originally.
- 28:46Speaker 1: But when you bring up a young prospect to the guys,
- 28:49Speaker 1: know who was with the team in major league camp,
- 28:51Speaker 1: who played with some of these guys in Triple A
- 28:53Speaker 1: last year, Double A last year, that's that's a jolt.
- 28:57Speaker 1: That's something where it's like, all right, and you feel
- 28:59Speaker 1: good on a team being like, Okay, well we just
- 29:01Speaker 1: lost the stud. But guess what, we got a young
- 29:03Speaker 1: stud and he's not just here for a little bit,
- 29:05Speaker 1: like he's gonna fit into this equation long term. So like,
- 29:08Speaker 1: I agree with you, Mark, this is a good opportunity. Josh,
- 29:11Speaker 1: what about you?
- 29:13Speaker 4: I totally agree.
- 29:15Speaker 3: Just to piggyback off of that, it's a great opportunity.
- 29:18Speaker 3: You're looking at a guy who was that guy twenty eleven.
- 29:21Speaker 3: But to go along with it, Noah, I wasn't in
- 29:24Speaker 3: big league camp. Memorial Day weekend, Steven Pierce breaks his foot,
- 29:28Speaker 3: I get called in the office after a game, I
- 29:31Speaker 3: get called up.
- 29:33Speaker 4: Wasn't in big league camp came up.
- 29:34Speaker 3: I played third base, not every day, but got an
- 29:36Speaker 3: opportunity to play quite a bit that year. I was
- 29:39Speaker 3: optioned up and down, you know, a couple of times,
- 29:42Speaker 3: but I ended up being part of the long term
- 29:44Speaker 3: plans as you saw.
- 29:45Speaker 4: But as you.
- 29:45Speaker 3: Said, this is an opportunity for you know, guys that
- 29:48Speaker 3: are even in the mix, that have been a part
- 29:50Speaker 3: of the team. You're going to get an extended look.
- 29:53Speaker 3: And my biggest thing was you're gonna get your opportunity.
- 29:58Speaker 3: Be ready for you know, some people's opportunity is bigger
- 30:01Speaker 3: than others, you know, but that's not your job to,
- 30:04Speaker 3: you know, worry about how big your opportunity is. Just
- 30:06Speaker 3: know that when your opportunity is here, sees it, take
- 30:09Speaker 3: advantage of it, and you never know, you know what
- 30:12Speaker 3: it can do for your career. But let alone, you know,
- 30:14Speaker 3: you you help be a part of a couple wins.
- 30:17Speaker 3: Oh Man, we got to find a way to keep
- 30:18Speaker 3: this guy around. He made, you know, a good play,
- 30:20Speaker 3: he made a baseball play, game saving defensive play, He
- 30:24Speaker 3: scores the run like there are moments that, as you mentioned,
- 30:28Speaker 3: are going to be ahead of these guys that you know,
- 30:30Speaker 3: gives them an opportunity to, you know, make decisions difficult
- 30:34Speaker 3: on the parts, and that's not always a bad thing
- 30:37Speaker 3: because if that decision is difficult, that means you have
- 30:40Speaker 3: a lot of guys performing and you're headed in the
- 30:42Speaker 3: right direction.
- 30:44Speaker 1: So we want to give you all a great opportunity.
- 30:47Speaker 1: It's called hitting that subscribe button if you haven't already,
- 30:51Speaker 1: And this is an opportunity everyone can seize. Almost one
- 30:55Speaker 1: point five thousand have done it so far. We're trying
- 30:57Speaker 1: to get the three thousand. Need your help it there.
- 31:00Speaker 1: And you also have the opportunity to support the show
- 31:03Speaker 1: by heading to our show store, the Buco Territory Team Store,
- 31:07Speaker 1: where you can have the opportunity to wear a cool
- 31:10Speaker 1: hat like the one you see on screen, or maybe
- 31:12Speaker 1: get a cool bag or anything else. I mean, by
- 31:16Speaker 1: by the end of the year, I feel like we're
- 31:17Speaker 1: gonna have like Bucco Territory cars, weptment stores. Yeah yeah,
- 31:22Speaker 1: we'll have our own bitcoin, you know, our own cryptocurrency.
- 31:25Speaker 1: Who knows, I actually know what I'll draw the line.
- 31:28Speaker 2: There, yeah yeah, yeah, no coins.
- 31:31Speaker 1: Yeah yeah. That seems like a good way to get
- 31:34Speaker 1: ourselves into trouble. But you can help us out if
- 31:38Speaker 1: I go to the Bucko Territory team store, guys, any
- 31:40Speaker 1: final thoughts as we wrap up another show.
- 31:44Speaker 2: No, I've just enjoyed this off day. And let's sweep
- 31:47Speaker 2: the Cardinals because I mean five games out, still twenty
- 31:50Speaker 2: four to twenty three, only five games behind the Cubs.
- 31:53Speaker 2: So let's make up some room with an easy Cardinals
- 31:56Speaker 2: team and finally get a win in Saint Louis because
- 31:59Speaker 2: I feel like the Pirates never win there.
- 32:01Speaker 3: So hit the reset button. And as you said, the
- 32:07Speaker 3: NL Centro is what it is. You stay within striking distance,
- 32:10Speaker 3: give yourself a chance. So you got a chance to
- 32:13Speaker 3: As I said, you know my right, the ship in
- 32:15Speaker 3: Saint Louis.
- 32:17Speaker 2: Cardinals are not the Phillies.
- 32:18Speaker 1: Yeah no they're not. They swept you on your home turf.
- 32:22Speaker 1: Now you have an opportunity to yourself. Yep. And uh
- 32:26Speaker 1: big road trip ahead. Road trips make or break teams
- 32:30Speaker 1: a lot of times, especially when there's turmoil. What you
- 32:33Speaker 1: do on the road can often define you. So we'll
- 32:35Speaker 1: see what defines this team as it heads into Memorial Day,
- 32:40Speaker 1: which is a week from today. So for Josh Harrison
- 32:44Speaker 1: and Platinum Key aka Mark, I'm no Ohiles signing off
- 32:47Speaker 1: saying thanks for tuning in to another episode of Bucco Territory,
- 32:50Speaker 1: presented to you by the Foul Territory Network.
