Latest / Early Edition with Ryan Bridge / Jane Searle: Child Matters CEO on the inquiry into Tom Phillips' time on the run with his children
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: So we're getting a public inquiry into the Tom Phillips case,
- 0:02Speaker 1: just as Simon Moore case will run it it's behind
- 0:05Speaker 1: closed doors. They're going to look at agencies, including the police,
- 0:09Speaker 1: did they do everything they could to protect those children.
- 0:12Speaker 1: Jane Seal, Child Matters Chief Executive with me this morning. Jane,
- 0:15Speaker 1: good morning, Good morning, Ryan. Now, the fact that it's private,
- 0:19Speaker 1: you know that it's behind closed doors, good thing.
- 0:22Speaker 2: It is a good thing. I think it's entirely appropriate
- 0:24Speaker 2: that we have this review. It's quite wide reaching, it's
- 0:27Speaker 2: got a practical focus, but most importantly it has been
- 0:30Speaker 2: done to protect the rights of those involved. So I'm
- 0:32Speaker 2: hopeful it's going to be a constructive process.
- 0:35Speaker 1: What are we actually hoping to change here or achieve?
- 0:39Speaker 2: Well, you know, the tragedy of this case doesn't hide
- 0:42Speaker 2: the fact that we still have learnings to get from it,
- 0:44Speaker 2: and if we can improve the system, whatever recommendations come
- 0:48Speaker 2: out of this is not as important as if they
- 0:51Speaker 2: are actually implemented, because there's many recommendations from reviews that
- 0:54Speaker 2: are never implemented. So what we want is strengthening the
- 0:57Speaker 2: system that we can learn from it.
- 0:59Speaker 1: This is such a ordering a Tambadikian agencies like that.
- 1:02Speaker 1: It's between a rock and a hard place, aren't they
- 1:04Speaker 1: Because you go in and you take children away and
- 1:06Speaker 1: people say, oh, you're taking you know, you count and
- 1:09Speaker 1: steal children from from families, and then you don't, and
- 1:12Speaker 1: then you're criticized if you don't. It's a hard place
- 1:15Speaker 1: to be, isn't it.
- 1:17Speaker 2: Absolutely, and it's very easy for the public and media
- 1:21Speaker 2: to judge without having all the facts. I'm very pleased
- 1:23Speaker 2: to see that this review has a practical focus and
- 1:26Speaker 2: that word was used because I think it's important to
- 1:28Speaker 2: understand that people make decisions and those agencies on the
- 1:32Speaker 2: information they have at the time.
- 1:34Speaker 1: Jane, appreciate your time this morning. Thank you. Jane steal
- 1:36Speaker 1: Child met a CEO.
