- 4:50Speaker 3: That helps out growing the podcast.
- 4:53Speaker 3: So tonight that went fairly smooth.
- 4:57Speaker 3: Tonight I want to talk to talk about single barrels.
- 5:00Speaker 3: It's not going to be a long podcast tonight because the subject is fairly what would you say self.
- 5:07Speaker 3: It's not, it's self-explanatory.
- 5:09Speaker 3: A single barrel, it's as self-explanatory as it can get.
- 5:13Speaker 3: But it's also complicated.
- 5:16Speaker 3: A single barrel means when you see it, whether you see it at the store, whether you see it at a group pic, a store pic, a restaurant pic it means the contents of one barrel make up that one batch.
- 5:31Speaker 3: So let's say that the barrel's been around for 15 years and it yields 120 bottles of barrel strength bourbon.
- 5:40Speaker 3: That is a single barrel.
- 5:42Speaker 3: One barrel used to make that barrel strength bourbon and whatever it yields it yields.
- 5:47Speaker 3: Now you can serve it at specific proofs.
- 5:51Speaker 3: So single barrels, it doesn't mean it's going to be barrel strength.
- 5:54Speaker 3: A lot of single barrels are approved.
- 5:56Speaker 3: I know that Knob Creek proofs their single barrels at 120.
- 6:01Speaker 3: So you have to.
- 6:03Speaker 3: You know that if you're picking and it's 130, it's going to be proofed down.
- 6:06Speaker 3: You kind of kind of keep that in mind and the same thing, I believe, unless it's a barrel proof.
- 6:12Speaker 3: Elijah Craig does regular and barrel proof stuff.
- 6:15Speaker 3: So Brian plays Palaia, brian Palaia.
- 6:23Speaker 3: Hi, glad you're watching.
- 6:29Speaker 3: So what we're getting into is but it's just the contents of one barrel, either at barrel strength or proof to a specific proof, but only the liquid that was in that barrel make up that batch of bottles.
- 6:44Speaker 3: So when you're buying Blantons there's now Blantons has single barrel after single barrel going into those they tell you the dump dates when those barrels were and it is proof to.
- 6:57Speaker 3: I believe I want to say 86%.
- 7:01Speaker 3: I could be.
- 7:04Speaker 3: I can run over there real quick.
- 7:06Speaker 3: There's one right over there.
- 7:07Speaker 3: Let me see what Blantons is proof to 93 proof.
- 7:12Speaker 3: Sorry, that was my bad, it's 93 proof.
- 7:15Speaker 3: So all Blantons unless it's straight from the barrel, our single barrels.
- 7:20Speaker 3: Proof to 93% 93 proof, which would be 45.
- 7:26Speaker 3: Let's see, 93 would be 46.5, right, abv 92 and 93.
- 7:39Speaker 3: 93 proof.
- 7:40Speaker 3: So there you go.
- 7:41Speaker 3: But that's what Blantons is, but that's a single barrel.
- 7:48Speaker 3: So when I was first getting into whiskey, which was a long time ago, early 90s, my dad Drake, jack Daniels and Jack Daniels single barrel was being sold in Wisconsin at Sam's Club.
- 8:00Speaker 3: Sam's Club initially in Wisconsin was selling high-end Whiskey in in a case there.
- 8:12Speaker 3: I remember going to that Sam's Club and seeing some bottles that were for sale that were like $110, which I thought was a lot at the time.
- 8:21Speaker 3: But you know we're talking early 90s.
- 8:23Speaker 3: It's probably like 200 comparatively.
- 8:26Speaker 3: But there was one that was some bottles of whiskey that were found and that at the bottom of the ocean that he had purchased and was selling at the Sam's Club.
- 8:37Speaker 3: So there's a lot of different type things that were happening back then.
- 8:40Speaker 3: But I had no idea what a single barrel was because you know, you got single malt scotches.
- 8:47Speaker 3: You got you know All different things that were confusing to what was a single barrel, because a single malt scotch, you know, is a whole different thing.
- 9:00Speaker 3: It's the single means that it was distilled at one distillery.
- 9:05Speaker 3: Because because in scotch you can get a lot of people buying barrels from different distilleries and making blends Amongst them.
- 9:16Speaker 3: And it's still scotch, it's just not single malt scotch.
- 9:20Speaker 3: So the single malt is how that was.
- 9:22Speaker 3: So when single barrel came out, I was very confused.
- 9:25Speaker 3: I didn't understand what a single barrel was tell.
- 9:28Speaker 3: About a year into getting into this I kind of knew what a single barrel was.
- 10:19Speaker 3: I mean, I'm not gonna say that I didn't have the basics, but the details of the single barrel are very, very complex because there's different Ways that single barrels come out.
- 10:33Speaker 3: One, the number one way that you can go and right now you probably could go to the store and you could buy a single barrel for roses.
- 10:42Speaker 3: You could buy a single barrel, evan Williams and I believe also you.
- 10:49Speaker 3: Well, you could get by single barrel knob creeks right off the Single barrel eagle rares from different stores, right.
- 10:58Speaker 3: So now we'll get into that.
- 11:01Speaker 3: So single barrel means that the juice or not the juice, the liquid, the distillate that has aged, that they use to make a specific brand, is what's in that barrel.
- 11:18Speaker 3: So, for instance, there is single barrel, each tailor and their single barrel Benchmarks and those single barrel benchmarks and those single barrel each tailors are the same liquid.
- 11:37Speaker 3: But this each tailor is older than the liquid from the benchmarks and the only thing that's decide, deciding what benchmark is and what each tailor is, is Position in the warehouse and Age.
- 11:55Speaker 3: So that's what the difference is, right there.
- 11:58Speaker 3: So between them it's still the same liquid, it's just aged a little bit longer and each tailor is in a certain place in the warehouse that they know is Produces the each tailor.
- 12:11Speaker 3: So that's what now John Ritt says he has a couple single barrel Barrel eagle rares from different stores around him, interesting to decide by sides.
- 12:22Speaker 3: He says good, good to check them out and try them.
- 12:26Speaker 3: So that's one thing, that that will that you want to do for one.
- 12:31Speaker 3: So you've got the single barrels coming from the distillery.
- 12:34Speaker 3: Like what?
- 12:35Speaker 3: What I just said, the benchmark, the Colonel Taylor, that's single barrels come from the distillery.
- 12:42Speaker 3: The Evan Williams single barrels is coming from the distillery and what that is is the distillery is setting aside barrels that they deem have a profile that matches the actual profile of the brand, because single barrels being one barrel, opposed to the brand of Evan Williams or the brand of Four Roses, where you take multiple barrels to keep a consistent flavor profile so that the single barrel then in a lot of cases can be higher proof or barrel strength.
- 13:22Speaker 3: But in the case of Buffalo Trace Blanton's it's 93 proof, it's proof down.
- 13:28Speaker 3: So there's a lot of things they can do but it still has to come all that bottling for that single barrel has to come from one barrel.
- 13:34Speaker 3: It cannot be blended or mixed with another barrel like you do, to make the flavor profile of all those that you are picking.
- 13:43Speaker 3: So what's really really unique is that you know when you go and you let's just say Buffalo Trace, buffalo Trace is a blend.
- 13:55Speaker 3: They don't sell it as a single barrel at all.
- 13:57Speaker 3: You can't buy it as a single barrel.
- 13:59Speaker 3: But if you do a Buffalo Trace barrel pick, you now are buying a Buffalo Trace single barrel.
- 14:05Speaker 3: You're picking one barrel.
- 14:06Speaker 3: The age that Buffalo Trace is from the Rick houses that they choose Buffalo Trace whiskey, and you pick that barrel through a group or through a restaurant or through a bar, so that now we're getting into away from the distillery picks where the distillery picks for you.
- 14:26Speaker 3: Now the other place the distillery will pick for you is at the gift shop.
- 14:31Speaker 3: The gift shop has, like the master distiller, select, and they'll do limited releases of these single barrels that people just run around the gift shops and get because they're fantastic, because maybe they really like those picks, because they like Brent Elliott's Four Roses single barrels, because he selects some.
- 14:50Speaker 3: You know they align to his palette.
- 14:53Speaker 3: That's what you get from the single barrels at the distilleries.
- 14:57Speaker 3: Now the, the.
- 15:01Speaker 3: Now we're getting into the restaurants and we're getting into the liquor stores and bars.
- 15:08Speaker 3: What that is is that a bar or a liquor store, they have a team that is usually trained, or the owners, and they have good pallets and they know what they like and they want to go down to Kentucky or go to whatever in their.
- 15:26Speaker 3: You know bourbon can be made anywhere but they want to go to their the distillery and they want to pick a special barrel for their liquor store, for their bar, for their restaurant.
- 15:35Speaker 3: So they get a team together and they all go down and have a really nice experience and they pick a barrel.
- 15:40Speaker 3: Then it comes back up and they sell it at the distillery or they sell it at the bar or the restaurant.
- 15:46Speaker 3: Now it's in the control state of Ohio.
- 15:51Speaker 3: There's a lot of unique things you have to do.
- 15:53Speaker 3: But, for instance, here we have a restaurant called the Winking Lizard.
- 15:58Speaker 3: They go down and do picks all the time and then sell them out of their bar.
- 16:02Speaker 3: Out of the bar, if you're going to purchase it in a bottle form, you're going to have to pay for it in as if you bought the 12 shots and it can't leave opened.
- 16:17Speaker 3: So you have to buy the whole bottle and pay for it.
- 16:21Speaker 3: In a poor distribution, not as a bottle, that you would get.
- 16:27Speaker 3: That is MSRP All right.
- 16:30Speaker 3: So, okay, I gotta say All right.
- 16:36Speaker 3: That was mom and dad calling and I'm doing a Facebook live, so I'm going to call them back in a little bit.
- 16:41Speaker 3: Hopefully nothing's wrong, but I'll check it out soon when I finish up here.
- 16:47Speaker 3: So, anyways, when you do that through a bar or restaurant, you wanna, you know you get to taste them.
- 16:56Speaker 3: You can taste a shot and see if you like it, and if you like it you can go back, maybe even get on one of those picks with the bar and restaurant.
- 17:05Speaker 3: I mean, if you really like what the pallets are and what they're doing.
- 17:08Speaker 3: So that's a very unique and cool thing to be able to.
- 17:11Speaker 3: I like what.
- 17:13Speaker 3: You know they have a lot of picks at the Winking Lizard here in Ohio and it's a very, very cool place to go because you usually can have some really good whiskey when you're out, so I visit that a lot.
- 17:28Speaker 3: But also then you get into the group picks.
- 17:34Speaker 3: Now, group picks are like us, the Scotchy Bourbon Boys.
- 17:39Speaker 3: We're gonna do our third pick.
- 17:41Speaker 3: We just announced it.
- 17:41Speaker 3: It's Elijah Craig.
- 17:42Speaker 3: It's gonna be Barrel Strength, elijah Craig.
- 17:46Speaker 3: We're gonna be doing that on Monday, september 11th, and then, hopefully, within 16 to 20 weeks, we'll have our bottle.
- 17:56Speaker 3: Now barrel picks when you go on them.
- 17:58Speaker 3: Now we've done them.
- 17:59Speaker 3: We've done the couple.
- 18:00Speaker 3: This is our third pick.
- 18:03Speaker 3: We did the Knob Creek pick.
- 18:05Speaker 3: When we went down to do the Knob Creek pick, we were able to go into the warehouse, leave the barrels, pick out the one we like, then get samples from it.
- 18:16Speaker 3: That was fantastic.
- 18:17Speaker 3: Now the other Knob Creek pick I did, which was the first pick I've ever done, and it was in the middle.
- 18:23Speaker 3: Now this is our pick.
- 18:24Speaker 3: I had it signed by Fred.
- 18:26Speaker 3: No, I'm not gonna, but you get the label right there.
- 18:31Speaker 3: Now.
- 18:31Speaker 3: This is the Barrel Room Scotchy Bourbon Boys Select 120.
- 18:35Speaker 3: It tells you how old it was 11, 10, 2011 to 4, 6, 4, 6, 9, 2012.
- 18:43Speaker 3: So that's one of the cool things about it we almost had an 11 year old barrel.
- 18:47Speaker 3: No, we had a.
- 18:50Speaker 3: Yeah, it was almost.
- 18:53Speaker 3: It was a little bit shy of 11 years, so that was a really cool pick.
- 18:59Speaker 3: Now, the first pick I ever was on was for the Kentucky Bourbon Festival, and you could see here and that was 11, 1, 2011, but it was then 2, it was pick 321, 2011.
- 19:13Speaker 3: So that was, you could see, 11, 1, and then this one was 11, 10.
- 19:22Speaker 3: So I picked our pick.
- 19:25Speaker 3: I was at 22,.
- 19:29Speaker 3: Right, yeah, in 22, 6, 9, 22, we picked.
- 19:34Speaker 3: We ended up picking a barrel that was only nine days older as far as it was distilled, nine days after the one that we picked in Kentucky for Kentucky Bourbon Festival.
- 19:49Speaker 3: It was only nine days distilled, but it had aged another whole year.
- 19:55Speaker 3: This one, I believe, is 321, and this one, I believe, is 321, and this one, I believe, was June, right, was it 6, 9?
- 20:09Speaker 3: So it was a year and three months later and only 10 days younger than the previous pick.
- 20:17Speaker 3: So that kinda tells you what you could do when you're doing different things.
- 20:21Speaker 3: That's kind of like pretty cool and random right there.
- 20:25Speaker 3: Right, it tells you, I believe it even tells you the Rick House.
- 20:31Speaker 3: Let's see row one.
- 20:34Speaker 3: Oh, that's where the glasses come in.
- 20:38Speaker 3: I do have them, folks, but let's just see.
- 20:41Speaker 3: Let's compare.
- 20:42Speaker 3: I never did the positioning of the two barrels, but in both cases Freddie was involved with the first one and this is the barrel room that we got to pick from warehouse Z, floor 4, row 22.
- 20:59Speaker 3: And then the scotchy bourbon I mean the the Kentucky Bourbon Festival was warehouse Z, fourth floor, row 36.
- 21:09Speaker 3: So we were 22, 32, 14 rows away in the same warehouse and the scotchy bourbon boys was distilled on the 10th of November 2011.
- 21:26Speaker 3: And what would that then?
- 21:30Speaker 3: Nine days earlier, that's when the Kentucky Bourbon Festival was distilled, I did not realize how close these two bottles were, but the scotchy bourbon boys aged an extra 15 months.
- 21:48Speaker 3: Yeah, an extra 15 months.
- 21:50Speaker 3: So that's really kind of cool.
- 21:52Speaker 3: So that gets you into what you do as far as selections.
- 21:57Speaker 3: Now, the Kentucky Bourbon Festival.
- 21:59Speaker 3: Because of what was happening at the time, the samples were pulled from the barrels and brought to the Kentucky Bourbon Festival offices where we did the pick with.
- 22:11Speaker 3: Freddie know both Justin's from Justin House of Bourbon.
- 22:14Speaker 3: Also Steve Coombs, randy Press, myself, roxy came.
- 22:18Speaker 3: It was just an all-around really kind of cool time for doing my first pick.
- 22:24Speaker 3: So, on that particular pick, I have and have kept this, I am going to bring it down to try and have Freddie sign it, because he picked this also with us and that was a fun pick to do for the Kentucky Bourbon Festival then.
- 22:40Speaker 3: So we got into a little bit of the different, you know, that's into these group picks.
- 22:48Speaker 3: Now, when it comes to a group, I will strongly suggest, if you are picking, if you buy, if you're getting bottles from the group and you really like it, that's a group you want to stick with.
- 23:03Speaker 3: If it's not quite your cup of tea, your, your palates might not match up and there's so many different forms of whiskey.
- 23:12Speaker 3: There's a you know there's stronger, higher proof whiskey, which is more bold and a little bit spicier, and then some people like really spicy whiskey.
- 23:23Speaker 3: Some people like they want to have less of a spice, less bite, less pepper.
- 23:30Speaker 3: You know there's there's so many different types.
- 23:32Speaker 3: Some people like sweet, some people like oak, some people want to just, you know there's a bourbon middle there which isn't sweet and it's it's got a little bit of sweetness, a little bit of the oak tannins.
- 23:45Speaker 3: You know that earthiness and that's what bourbon is.
- 23:48Speaker 3: You know, to some people that's like your grand-grandpas or your dad's bourbon.
- 23:52Speaker 3: There's some people who like that.
- 23:54Speaker 3: So it just depends on whatever group you're going with, what palette you want.
- 24:00Speaker 3: You know you're gonna pick.
- 24:01Speaker 3: So you definitely want to get in a group where they're picking barrels that are aligned to what you like.
- 24:09Speaker 3: Now, so far we've had some really good success.
- 24:13Speaker 3: We've had some good barrels presented to us and I'm excited for this next pick, which is I did this particular pick with the Kentucky Bourbon festival.
- 24:26Speaker 3: Now this is a festival pick.
- 24:27Speaker 3: The difference between, in my opinion, what a festival pick and then a group pick and then a store pick, a store and then a shelf pick.
- 24:36Speaker 3: Shelf picks are designed to go out to the whole whole country, whole world, and there's so many different flavor profiles for people they're not trying to match into one.
- 24:50Speaker 3: They're trying to match the find the barrels that come close to the actual flavor profile of the whiskey brand that they're represented.
- 24:59Speaker 3: That's what I feel they try and do when they're, when they're dumping these barrels and picking these barrels for single barrels.
- 25:06Speaker 3: When it comes to Blanton's, it's the same thing.
- 25:09Speaker 3: They're there, they've got it in a specific warehouse.
- 25:12Speaker 3: It's supposed to match a specific profile.
- 25:17Speaker 3: That's similar now Blanton's.
- 25:18Speaker 3: There's good ones and bad ones.
- 25:19Speaker 3: It's a single barrel.
- 25:21Speaker 3: Single barrels cannot all be winners to you, because a loser to you is a winner to somebody else and that's why not all single barrels are winners, because there's so many different pallets.
- 25:36Speaker 3: I mean, there's some people's pallets that are burned and they need to have strong whiskey, and light whiskey irritates them because they can't taste it.
- 25:44Speaker 3: They think it's it's light and it doesn't have flavor.
- 25:47Speaker 3: Well, somebody who has a refined, defined palette that is, you know, not not totally burned out or, you know, used by a lifetime of eating and drinking their palette especially young people's that the stuff that those people are drinking, the higher end stuff, the stuff they like the lesser because it doesn't just blow their palate out they can taste those intricate flavors that an 80 proof whiskey can provide.
- 26:17Speaker 3: So that's how that works.
- 26:20Speaker 3: Now, when you go to, then you go to that restaurant, or now you get into the restaurants or the stores.
- 26:28Speaker 3: Now you're getting into a little bit.
- 26:32Speaker 3: Now you've got a team that knows what they want, they kind of want, and you can align to that.
- 26:38Speaker 3: If you're buying at your liquor store and you like their picks, you can keep buying them because good chances are the team they're sending down is gonna consistently pick good whiskey for you.
- 26:48Speaker 3: So you're getting a little bit more isolated with that.
- 26:51Speaker 3: Now when you get into groups, you're really getting into isolated you most of the time in groups.
- 26:55Speaker 3: You know the people within the group, they're your friends.
- 26:58Speaker 3: Sometimes you talk and you do things and when you go down and make a pick you are now isolated to that particular group, those particular people, and you're trying to buy something special.
- 27:09Speaker 3: You know you're not gonna have a ton like a liquor store.
- 27:14Speaker 3: They, you know it's kind of like they're a baseball team.
- 27:18Speaker 3: If they're hitting 500, where they're getting really good picks, they're doing well, whereas a group you gotta hit you're trying to hit a thousand all the time you're trying to get that one special barrel that that distillery has.
- 27:31Speaker 3: Same thing now when you get into festivals, when those festivals you're getting those festival picks are being made by people in the industry who understand bourbon and they know what good whiskey, what they're trying to do, they're trying to get those really special ones and usually this festival the distilleries are participating, so they want their product to be shined on by these barrel picks.
- 27:58Speaker 3: So you get these really good barrels to choose from and that's where the distilleries and the festivals coming together, for instance.
- 28:09Speaker 3: Like I said, this was one of the one day that I will never forget.
- 28:13Speaker 3: This is the private barrel, single barrel, and it is barrel proof and it's a 10 year.
- 28:23Speaker 3: I mean it's 10 years uncut straight from the barrels 1789, it's 126.6 proof and it tells you even the barrel number.
- 28:35Speaker 3: But we picked this barrel with Conor O'Driscoll, randy Press, justin Thompson was there and, forgive me, I don't remember her name.
- 28:48Speaker 3: That is one thing that I have to work on there.
- 28:52Speaker 3: When we did the pick, I remember, but it's been over a year now and I don't remember.
- 28:58Speaker 3: But we did this pick.
- 28:59Speaker 3: You can check it out on YouTube because the pick is up there.
- 29:04Speaker 3: But this barrel pick was a cool day.
- 29:06Speaker 3: And to pick with Conor O'Driscoll and then talk to the master distiller Now this was not his yet whiskey, but he's in charge of coming up with all the flavors and keeping the brand on task and everything.
- 29:21Speaker 3: Now his whiskey, I believe, is in one more year away.
- 29:24Speaker 3: I think it was two years away last year.
- 29:26Speaker 3: So it's one more year away before that hits the shelves.
- 29:29Speaker 3: But this one is a single barrel.
- 29:32Speaker 3: We went on that pick that was in the distillery again in the Rick House and you basically thieved with the whiskey thief, you put it straight into the glasses.
- 29:44Speaker 3: You did the tests blind and then you picked two.
- 29:48Speaker 3: And then you did those blind and then you picked your barrel.
- 29:51Speaker 3: It was fantastic, fantastic day drinking with Conor some really, really good whiskey.
- 30:00Speaker 3: And this was the first.
- 30:01Speaker 3: The year before it was an Elijah Craig pick, which was the normal 94 proof, where this one was one of the first single barrel barrel proofs that you could pick and where that's one of the things we're excited to pick this coming September.
- 30:19Speaker 3: That's gonna be what we're gonna be doing for the Scotchie Bourbon Boys.
- 30:22Speaker 3: That will be on there on that label.
- 30:25Speaker 3: Now that brings you to one more step of single barrels.
- 30:29Speaker 3: I hope everybody understands.
- 30:31Speaker 3: I mean, it's a group, it's a bottling of one barrel in that one group.
- 30:38Speaker 3: That's what the labels say and whatever.
- 30:41Speaker 3: And then you can't mix any other bourbon into that barrel.
- 30:46Speaker 3: So it's just, it's not now once again, sometimes you're picking those barrels from the same place.
- 30:56Speaker 3: The barrels are aging to make the brand.
- 30:58Speaker 3: But I'm telling you, the barrels are always so different that single barrels are a lot of fun and I really think from what I've tasted I mean sometimes I've tasted when we were at Newriff there was a barrel there.
- 31:11Speaker 3: It did not have the Newriff profile, it was carmely.
- 31:15Speaker 3: It had the big Kentucky distillery bourbon profile.
- 31:21Speaker 3: It was absolutely delicious.
- 31:22Speaker 3: It's not what we picked.
- 31:23Speaker 3: We picked something that the group picked, something that was closer to Newriff.
- 31:27Speaker 3: Now this year when we did it, I had that in mind, because last year I didn't have something like that in mind and we were going through it and we were talking about the thing and we ended up picking the whiskey that wasn't closest to the profile of Newriff.
- 31:42Speaker 3: The group that I was down there with was Stacy Pritchard and Steve Coombs, myself, and we ended up in CT and we ended up picking a pretty damn good pick and I can't wait to be tasting it this year.
- 31:57Speaker 3: Now the last but not least is state picks.
- 32:01Speaker 3: Now, ohio, we are familiar with state picks.
- 32:04Speaker 3: One of the really cool things is about a state pick.
- 32:07Speaker 3: When you go on a state pick I've picked for Penelope and I've picked for Old Elk and those picks are very, very, very unique and who you pick.
- 32:20Speaker 3: With what you're picking you are not picking the same way that you pick a single barrel for, because you're not just picking one barrel.
- 32:30Speaker 3: In a lot of cases you're choosing from 15, 20, even sometimes 40, like we did with the Old Elk.
- 32:36Speaker 3: There was 40 different barrels to choose from.
- 32:38Speaker 3: There was some.
- 32:39Speaker 3: You basically had very little samples and you had to dump a lot because 40 barrels and sampling I would have to say that of the 40 barrels they picked 36 of them and the four barrels that we picked were some.
- 32:59Speaker 3: There was too much funk going on that we didn't pick the four barrels and you were just making sure when you were picking these barrels, because we were picking finished barrels.
- 33:10Speaker 3: We were picking wheat whiskey.
- 33:11Speaker 3: We were picking bourbon, which is malt bourbon, not a high rye or a weeded bourbon.
- 33:20Speaker 3: It's a malted bourbon because malt is 34% of the secondary grain and then either wheat or rye is the lower grains.
- 33:30Speaker 3: So that was very unique and as we were picking through, you realized that what they're trying to do is pick good whiskey.
- 33:38Speaker 3: When you're picking for the whole state, you're trying to pick good whiskey.
- 33:42Speaker 3: You're trying to find an exceptional.
- 33:44Speaker 3: You do come across exceptional barrels.
- 33:46Speaker 3: In those 40 barrels, this Arminac finished barrel right here.
- 33:51Speaker 3: This was exceptional, this was exceptional whiskey.
- 33:56Speaker 3: This is why, of the 36 barrels I had to get my hands on this.
- 34:01Speaker 3: I also got my hands on a weeded the wheat whiskey, which was a seven year old wheat whiskey that I also was able to go out and find too.
- 34:13Speaker 3: Now, a lot of times when you're picking, you know with a group or whatnot, you end up with a bottle as complimentary because you picked, helped pick, that barrel.
- 34:26Speaker 3: When I pick for myself, I end up.
- 34:29Speaker 3: I don't end up with anything complimentary, but I end up with three or four bottles, I believe.
- 34:36Speaker 3: Right now I've got the sighing bottle right here from Fred of our Scotchy Bourbon Boys pick, plus two more and I do believe I drank one.
- 34:45Speaker 3: So you know you've got some.
- 34:48Speaker 3: You put some back.
- 34:49Speaker 3: Now this one only, it was a half pick with the barrel room, so we ended up having 68 bottles, so there weren't a lot of bottles.
- 34:57Speaker 3: For I was thankful that the price went up because a couple of people dropped off and that way I didn't oversell the barrel, whereas with our second pick of the 181 bottles, I believe I have a total of 16 and CT has four.
- 35:15Speaker 3: So 20 bottles are left.
- 35:17Speaker 3: You know, contact me if you're interested in that at all.
- 35:21Speaker 3: And then with the, you know with the Lajacrack, but with the state picks you go out and you know that's one thing I picked.
- 35:27Speaker 3: I helped pick 36 barrels but I didn't walk away with 36 bottles.
- 35:32Speaker 3: I went out and purchased two of the 36 barrels and that's kind of how the state picks.
- 35:39Speaker 3: So it's a whole different experience picking single barrels for a state and I can't have to imagine if you're picking the single barrels for the country through a distillery.
- 35:47Speaker 3: It's the same type thing.
- 35:49Speaker 3: You're just looking for quality, good whiskey going out because there's so many people with so many different pallets.
- 35:55Speaker 3: So that's what I got on single barrels, just remember.
- 36:01Speaker 3: I mean I would say if you're gonna align yourself to get single barrels from groups, liquor stores or wherever you're getting them, you wanna make sure you know with that first bottle that you're liking what they picked, because if you're not liking what they picked, you don't wanna just keep buying them because you think it's good.
- 36:22Speaker 3: You gotta like it because everybody has different taste pallets and there's so many different things that happen in whiskey.
- 36:31Speaker 3: So I'm when we pick for the Scotchie Bourbon Boys.
- 36:34Speaker 3: I'm always looking for that.
- 36:35Speaker 3: Really, really turn your head.
- 36:38Speaker 3: Flavor, something unique, something that you just don't get every day.
- 36:43Speaker 3: That's what I look for when we're doing our picks something special.
- 36:48Speaker 3: And the same thing.
- 36:50Speaker 3: I do that when I'm picking with Kentucky Bourbon Festival.
- 36:53Speaker 3: But also when you're picking with the group and you're not the main person in the group, you have to.
- 37:01Speaker 3: I really find that's where I learn a lot about whiskey, because the conversation and the overall comparison to everybody's different and their different pallets is always a great experience that I find that's very educational.
- 37:18Speaker 3: And then who you're picking with at the distillery I mean so, freddie, know I've picked with, I've picked with Conor O'Driscoll, I've picked with Greg Metz from Old Elk and Macaulay Mitten at Wilderness Trail, and so I mean who I'm in and we're gonna be trying to pick with Bernie Lover's at Heaven Hill when we do this pick.
- 37:48Speaker 3: So I mean it's really kind of really cool, awesome experiences.
- 37:53Speaker 3: And then also, sandy Noe was on our pick.
- 37:55Speaker 3: She was part of the pick team for our knob Creek pick.
- 38:00Speaker 3: We are going down on Saturday to see Sandy, so I'm excited about seeing Sandy.
- 38:07Speaker 3: So everybody, once again, I just wanted to go over the what a barrel pick and what a single barrel actually is.
- 38:18Speaker 3: I mean, it's you know, in the world of whiskey, that's something that you wanna be up on while you're going out and purchasing whiskey, because single barrels are not consistent, they're one and done.
- 38:32Speaker 3: And sometimes you get some really good single barrels and you're just gonna it's not you.
- 38:38Speaker 3: If you taste it when you open it, the first thing you should and you love it, the first thing you should do is instantly go back to where you got it and get more, because once it's done, it's done.
- 38:52Speaker 3: And that is what a very unique thing about single barrels they're not.
- 38:56Speaker 3: You know there'll be another single barrel, but it's not gonna taste like that.
- 39:00Speaker 3: So you wanna do that.
- 39:02Speaker 3: And that gets us to the end of the line.
- 39:08Speaker 3: Tonight, glad that it seemed like we had some really good.
- 39:13Speaker 3: You know some people along the way going and I do believe I'm not seeing.
- 39:19Speaker 3: No, let's see, was there comments?
- 39:21Speaker 3: So, all right, nope, okay, all right, palace.
- 39:26Speaker 3: He said his name.
- 39:27Speaker 3: I got it right.
- 39:28Speaker 3: So we had some initial comments and everything.
- 39:31Speaker 3: But let's get ready to wrap this up.
- 39:35Speaker 3: I will pull that up.
- 39:38Speaker 3: I'll make sure my speaker's on.
- 39:41Speaker 3: My speaker is on.
- 39:42Speaker 3: And then thanks everybody for joining me tonight.
- 39:46Speaker 3: That was a quick podcast.
