- 0:00I have had the the wonderful privilege of of being a pastor
- 0:03now for over over 40 years. 31 of those years I've been here at
- 0:10Christ Community Church and looking at the church around the
- 0:17world, I believe there there are three major issues that the
- 0:23church faces every week, three issues that need to be dealt
- 0:31with in the church. The first issue is the
- 0:37unconverted among us. Churches across our country are
- 0:44filled with unconverted people. We know that because the Bible's
- 0:51very replete with all kinds of testimony as to how the evil 1
- 0:58sows the tares among the wheat. Satan is a master at disguising
- 1:06that which is false in a way that makes it look like it's
- 1:13true. And so Satan is a master at
- 1:16deception. He disguises himself as an Angel
- 1:21of light and he does all he can to disrupt the harmony and unity
- 1:26of the Church. And Jesus tells us that one of
- 1:31the ways he does that is that he sows the the tares, the the
- 1:34unconverted among the converted. And Jesus says that they look so
- 1:41much like that which is true that you can't distinguish them
- 1:45until the end of the age, and then all will be revealed.
- 1:52There will always be Judases among the disciples, there will
- 1:57always be demises among the church.
- 2:02People who are deceptive, people are who are good at
- 2:08masquerading, people are good at pretending.
- 2:15And so the Bible warns us about that.
- 2:18That's why the series on on Wednesday night is just so
- 2:21incredibly crucial to the church.
- 2:24What really is a true Christian and am I truly genuine?
- 2:29Am I truly born again? Throughout the the 80s and 90's,
- 2:37the secret sensitive movements swept the church and
- 2:42entertainment replaced enlightenment, the theatrical
- 2:48replaced the theological, and that movement did all it could
- 2:54to bring in the unbeliever to the church.
- 2:59The church is not designed for unbelievers, it's only designed
- 3:02for believers. But the movement would bring all
- 3:07kinds of unbelievers into the church.
- 3:10The church became more and more like the world.
- 3:14The music became like that of the world, the preaching became
- 3:18like that of the world. More stories than the true story
- 3:22of of the Christ, more personal illustrations about the pastor
- 3:26instead of the true illustrations about, about the
- 3:29Lord. And so all these unconverted
- 3:32people felt very comfortable coming to church.
- 3:36The unconverted should never be comfortable in church.
- 3:41They should be so out of place that they either repent and turn
- 3:46from their sin, or they just leave.
- 3:51But the church is not for the unconverted.
- 3:54The church consists of those who have been called out by God to
- 3:58worship Him and to honor Him and to glorify His precious name.
- 4:04And yet that is a major issue facing the church, the
- 4:07unconverted among us. That the second issue that that
- 4:14faces the church that I think is also a a major problem.
- 4:19And that is the undisciplined around us, the unconverted among
- 4:27us and the undisciplined around us.
- 4:33That the church has become very flabby, spiritually flabby.
- 4:40Have you ever noticed that I, I had a grandmother growing up,
- 4:44like most of you have grandmothers and she was very,
- 4:48very heavy and she had so much excess weight on her arms that
- 4:56as children, grandchildren, we will go up and just flap the
- 5:01flab on the end of her arms. And she would laugh and we would
- 5:06laugh and just have a grand old time.
- 5:09She was a master at cooking all kinds of food.
- 5:12And the more she cooked, the bigger she she became and and
- 5:15the more flabby she was. And so we would just play with
- 5:18the fat on her arms. She would laugh, we would laugh,
- 5:23and that would be funny. But it's not funny when it's in
- 5:26the church. It's not funny when we become
- 5:29spiritually flabby. We need to be spiritually strong
- 5:34in the church. But because we're so
- 5:37undisciplined and the Bible says we are to discipline ourselves
- 5:42unto godliness, First Timothy chapter 4 verses 7:00 and 8:00,
- 5:48that that bodily exercise profiteth little.
- 5:54But godliness profits for all things, because it profits for
- 5:59not only this life, but the life to come.
- 6:03Paul tells Timothy and Second Timothy chapter 1 and verse #7
- 6:06God has given us the spirit of discipline and yet we are so
- 6:14undisciplined. We are out of control.
- 6:18We're not in control of our faculties, our minds, our
- 6:22thoughts, our words. The the discipline of Scripture,
- 6:27the discipline of supplication, the discipline of silence and
- 6:31solitude, the discipline of surrender and self denial, the
- 6:36discipline of a steadfast heart and submission are are alien to
- 6:42most people. And we find ourselves hardly at
- 6:48all exercising our spiritual faculties that we might somehow
- 6:53be in tune with with the God we say we serve.
- 7:00Paul and 2nd Thessalonians 3 verse #11 said these words he
- 7:07said. For we hear that some among you
- 7:10are leading an undisciplined life today.
- 7:16I wonder what Paul would say about the church, because the
- 7:22church has become more and more undisciplined.
- 7:27And that's not a good thing. That's a bad thing.
- 7:31And that needs to be dealt with in each of our own personal
- 7:34lives. So you, you have the unconverted
- 7:39among us. You, you have the undisciplined
- 7:45around us. And here is the the third major
- 7:50issue facing the church, and that is you have the
- 7:56undiscerning amidst us, the undiscerning people that are
- 8:06unable to discern between that which is true and that which is
- 8:13false, people that are unable to discern God's way from every
- 8:24other way. That is a a major issue in the
- 8:32church. Discernment is a word that
- 8:38describes that which is black and that which is white.
- 8:44Discerning people don't live in the in the nebulous area of the
- 8:48Gray, but so much in the church today, we live in that realm of
- 8:55grayness. We don't want to come up on this
- 8:59side or that side. We want to tolerate all kinds of
- 9:03things in the church in our own lives.
- 9:08We don't want to be too hard to the right.
- 9:12We don't want to be too soft to the left.
- 9:14So we kind of settled in between and we begin to compromise.
- 9:19Compromise our purity, compromise our doctrine,
- 9:24compromise our lives simply because we live in the realm of
- 9:30the undiscerning, Discerning people are those who truly make
- 9:38a clear distinction in their minds between what is right and
- 9:46what is wrong. And that's where Paul comes in,
- 9:51in verses 19 and 20, or, excuse me, verses 20 and 21 of our text
- 9:58in First Thessalonians chapter 5.
- 10:01When he says these words, examine everything carefully.
- 10:09Hold fast to that which is good and abstain from every form of
- 10:19evil. Did that 2 verses describe what
- 10:29is not happening in the church today?
- 10:35We need to be discerning people. And so Paul is concerned about
- 10:40this. In fact, he was so concerned
- 10:44about it. Listen to what he says to the
- 10:46church at Corinth in Second Corinthians Chapter 11.
- 10:50In fact, if you got your Bible, you can turn there with me if
- 10:53you would. Second Corinthians Chapter 11.
- 10:57This is Paul's attitude toward the church, not just the church
- 11:02at Corinth, but every church, which should also be the
- 11:07attitude of every pastor of his church.
- 11:12He says in verse #2 I am jealous for you with the godly jealousy,
- 11:17for I betrothed you to one husband, so that the Christ I
- 11:23might present you as a pure virgin.
- 11:27But I am afraid that as the serpent deceived Eve by his
- 11:32craftiness, your minds will be LED astray from the simplicity
- 11:39and purity of devotion to Christ.
- 11:48Ever since the fall of man, Satan has been actively involved
- 11:54in deception, and Paul was concerned about those in Corinth
- 12:01that they would be deceived as Eve was deceived.
- 12:06And every false teacher, every false preacher, always masters
- 12:14Satan's deception. For Satan would portray the
- 12:21truth as error and then offer error as truth.
- 12:33And that's what false teachers do.
- 12:37Satan would say back in Genesis chapter 3 these words, You shall
- 12:42not surely die just because God said that if you eat of this one
- 12:50tree, you will die. Surely, surely he was mistaken.
- 12:57Surely God LED you astray. Surely God really didn't mean
- 13:01what he said, that you would die if you ate of the tree of the
- 13:12knowledge of good and evil. And so he would take the truth
- 13:20and make you believe it was error, and then he would take
- 13:25error and make you believe it was true.
- 13:30And he would say these words. For your eyes will surely be
- 13:36open, and you will be like God, the master deceiver.
- 13:46He takes that which is true and paints it as error, then takes
- 13:52that which is error and convinces you that it's true.
- 13:58Who doesn't want to be like God? I mean, come on, if that's the
- 14:03case, why not eat? And so they did and plunged the
- 14:09human race, the world and the universe into sin.
- 14:16That's how Satan operates. He's a master at deception.
- 14:24His counsel seems to be perfect, but it was so detrimental to
- 14:35them. So Paul says, I'm afraid that as
- 14:40a serpent deceived Eve, so you too would fall into that same
- 14:47category. Now he's writing to the church.
- 14:50He's not writing to somebody from the Kiwanis Club, somebody
- 14:54from the YMCA, somebody from your your school.
- 14:58He's writing to the church. Now listen to what he says next.
- 15:02This is very, very important, for if one comes and preaches
- 15:06another Jesus whom we have not preached, or you receive a
- 15:11different spirit which you have not received, or a different
- 15:15gospel which you have not accepted, you bear this
- 15:24beautifully. What an indictment of the
- 15:28church. Someone comes and they present
- 15:31to you another gospel. They present to you another
- 15:35spirit and another Jesus. You know what you do, you
- 15:39embrace it, you accept it as beautiful.
- 15:44You say, well, this is this is pretty good.
- 15:48This is OK. And you fall into this
- 15:52deception, you, you begin to tolerate evil.
- 15:58You tolerate another gospel, you tolerate another Jesus.
- 16:03And it's OK that that is an undiscerning church.
- 16:10That's the problem. And that is the problem in the
- 16:14church across America and around the world.
- 16:18It's filled with people who are undiscerning and they hear
- 16:22something being preached. They say, well, that's, that's
- 16:25OK. I, I understand that.
- 16:27I, I can agree with that. And they begin to accept it for
- 16:32what it is. And all the while they are being
- 16:34deceived by the evil. 1 So Paul says, For I consider myself not
- 16:41in the least inferior to the most eminent apostles, but even
- 16:47if I am unskilled in speech, yet I am not so in knowledge.
- 16:52In fact, in every way we have made this evident to you in all
- 16:56things, he says, Listen, I might not be the most eloquent guy
- 17:00around. I might not be the best
- 17:02communicator around. I might not speak like other
- 17:05people speak, but I do know this.
- 17:07I have the knowledge that gave you a firm foundation of what it
- 17:11is you are to believe. And yet you have set that aside
- 17:15and you've accepted error for truth.
- 17:21And that is a problem. And that's the problem facing
- 17:27every church in America today. The risk of wandering from the
- 17:36truth is huge. The risk of becoming confused.
- 17:41Confused is on the rise in the church simply because we don't
- 17:49examine everything carefully. Everything.
- 17:58And the word that Paul uses in First Thessalonians 5 is the
- 18:03word doki matzo. It's a word that means to
- 18:09analyze. It's the word that means to
- 18:14scrutinize. It's the word that means to test
- 18:19and to prove. It's a word of examination.
- 18:26Prove everything. Analyze every word, scrutinize
- 18:30every element, everything. Bring every thought.
- 18:36Paul says in 2nd Corinthians 10. Every thought into captivity to
- 18:40Christ, to the obedience to Christ, every thought that you
- 18:46have, bring it under subjection to the obedience of Christ.
- 18:51Here he says examine everything, analyze, scrutinize, test,
- 18:57prove, put under the microscope every word, every situation,
- 19:03everything and do it carefully. Now remember we're looking at
- 19:10the model life and the model life is 1 of adoration.
- 19:15The model life adores their God. So they are joyful, prayerful
- 19:22and thankful. And what they don't do is they
- 19:25don't quench the Spirit and they do not despise, disregard or dis
- 19:29esteem any prophetic utterance, anything that comes from the
- 19:32revelation of God. And on the other hand, they
- 19:35examine everything that comes from the revelation of God.
- 19:40They examine it carefully, they scrutinize it, they make sure
- 19:46that what is being preached, what is being said, what is
- 19:51being lived is in accordance with truth, because truth is
- 19:58that which matters. So in other words, Paul says
- 20:05this, I want you to live a model life.
- 20:11And in order to live a model life, you must be judging
- 20:18everything. Now I know in today's.
- 20:21Vernacular. That's a bad word.
- 20:24Judge who? Who are we to judge?
- 20:28Anything or anyone in fact, someone will say, and you've got
- 20:34on your mind right now the Bible says we are not to judge, lest
- 20:40you 2 be judged. I love it when people say that
- 20:45because that tells you that they are undiscerning and not
- 20:50discerning. That tells you that they are in
- 20:54error and not in truth. How do we know that?
- 21:00We'll turn back to Matthew 7 because that's where the the
- 21:03verse is, right? Jesus talks about it and the
- 21:08Sermon on the Mount, Matthew 7 verse #1 Do not judge so that
- 21:13you will not be judged. See, I'm not going to judge
- 21:16somebody. I'm not going to judge what was
- 21:18said. I'm not going to judge what they
- 21:20do lest I2 be judged. That's not what Jesus is saying.
- 21:27Jesus isn't throwing out all biblical judgment.
- 21:32I'll show you that in a moment. That's the way He says, for the
- 21:37way you judge, you will be judged and by your standard of
- 21:40measure, it will be measured to you.
- 21:43Why do you look at the speck that is in your brother's eye
- 21:46but do not notice the log that is in your own eye?
- 21:49Or how can you say to your brother, let me take the speck
- 21:53out of your eye and behold, the log is in your own eye?
- 21:57You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and
- 22:04then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your
- 22:08brother's eye. So in the very last verse, Jesus
- 22:13affirms judgment in the same way.
- 22:17He says do not judge, but yet he says you need to judge.
- 22:23And you're going to do that first of all by taking the log
- 22:26out of your own eye so that you can discern the speck in someone
- 22:30else's eye. So in the same context, he tells
- 22:34you not to judge. He tells you to judge, to
- 22:37examine, to scrutinize, to analyze.
- 22:41Remember, he's talking about the religious establishment, the
- 22:44Pharisees, who are judging people by a standard that they
- 22:49themselves did not and would not keep.
- 22:54That's hypocritical judgement. That's hypocritical scrutiny.
- 22:59That's what he he condemns, but he does affirm judgement based
- 23:09on what is said, if first of all, you are willing to take
- 23:14that which is in your own eye out so you can see clearly, to
- 23:20actually help the other person who has a speck in his eye.
- 23:26Very, very important note this. We cannot judge people's
- 23:32attitudes and motives. We cannot examine people's
- 23:36attitudes and motives. God does that.
- 23:40Paul says in 2nd Corinthians 4 verse #5 or First Corinthians 4
- 23:43verse #5 that He will expose one day every man's motives.
- 23:47God sees the heart. He judges the heart.
- 23:49He does all of that. But listen to what Jesus says in
- 23:53John 724. Judge with righteous judgement.
- 24:01You are to judge with righteous judgment.
- 24:04There is a standard, a statement by which everyone is called to
- 24:09live by. And that standard is God's
- 24:12standard. It's a righteous standard.
- 24:16And so you, you examine everything according to the
- 24:20righteous standard of God, Not your standard, but God's
- 24:24standard, the word of God that is truthful, the word of God
- 24:28that is unalterable, the word of God that always stands supreme
- 24:33and sufficient. Judge with righteous judgement.
- 24:401st Corinthians 1015 Paul says like every preacher should say,
- 24:47judge what I say, judge what I say, put what I say under the
- 24:55microscope. Like the Bereans in Acts 1711,
- 25:00they wanted to test and prove everything, to see whether or
- 25:05not what was said was true or not.
- 25:07They'd examined everything, and that's the way it should be.
- 25:13Those who truly live a life of integrity are always open to be
- 25:20examined. Those who do not live a life of
- 25:24integrity do not want to be examined.
- 25:27They don't want to be held into account.
- 25:30But those who live a life of an honesty and integrity and
- 25:33purity, they want to be held under the microscope because
- 25:37there's a standard by which they are to live their lives and they
- 25:40want to be held to that standard.
- 25:43So Paul says, judge what I say. The Bible also says that you are
- 25:51to judge acts of sin. Did you know that Paul says this
- 25:58over in First Corinthians 5 verse #12 He says for what have
- 26:07I to do with judging outsiders? Do you not judge those who are
- 26:14within the church, but those who are outside?
- 26:19God judges. So remove the wicked man from
- 26:23among yourselves. He was talking about a man who
- 26:26had committed sex sins with his mother.
- 26:30He says we don't judge those on the outside, but we do judge
- 26:35those on the inside, those who commit acts of sin, those who
- 26:40live disobediently to the Word of God.
- 26:42Those people need to be scrutinized.
- 26:45They need to be held to the biblical standard of purity and
- 26:49holiness because we are a holy body, we are a holy church.
- 26:54We serve a holy God. And if we are to represent a
- 26:57holy God to a unholy world, we can't do it living unholy lives.
- 27:02We must live holy lives. And so if there's someone among
- 27:07you who's living in sin, that needs to be confronted, that
- 27:10needs to be dealt with. That's what Matthew 18 is all
- 27:12about. Matthew 18, the first
- 27:14instruction given to the church is all about judging sin.
- 27:18In the church. Your brother sins.
- 27:20You go to your brother, he repents you on him.
- 27:24If he doesn't repent, you take two or three witnesses with you.
- 27:27Why? To win your brother.
- 27:29You wouldn't have went into a place of repentance.
- 27:33If that doesn't work, you tell it to the church.
- 27:36So why? The church can go after him,
- 27:39plead and beg with him to repent.
- 27:42If they don't repent, you treat him as what?
- 27:46A tax gatherer and a Gentile. You treat him as if he's an
- 27:51unbeliever because he hasn't repented.
- 27:56See that's that's examining everything carefully.
- 28:02So important. But the church today doesn't
- 28:06want to do that. We don't want to be involved in
- 28:09those kinds of things. The Bible says you're to judge
- 28:14yourself. We're going to partake at the
- 28:16Lord's table here in a minute. First Corinthians 11 says let a
- 28:20man examine himself before he eats and drinks of the of the
- 28:26Lord's table so that he doesn't eat and drink in an unworthy
- 28:29manner. But because we are an
- 28:32undiscerning people, we tend not to look at our lives and examine
- 28:37them under the microscope of the authority of God's holy Word.
- 28:43So we refrain from any kind of examination in context of First
- 28:51Thessalonians 5. We're not to despise or look
- 28:54down upon prophetic utterances, but we are to examine everything
- 28:56that's said. Everything is spoken under the
- 29:00guise of God's holy Word and you hold fast to that which is good.
- 29:09You, You grip that which is good.
- 29:11You, you, you cling to that which is good.
- 29:14But you, you abstain from every form of evil.
- 29:19Same word used in First Thessalonians 4 where you are to
- 29:21abstain from sexual immorality. You don't abstain every once in
- 29:26a while, you abstain completely. Same is true here.
- 29:30You don't abstain every once in a while from that which is
- 29:33wrong, you abstain completely from it.
- 29:35You shun evil, not just evil behavior, but evil beliefs,
- 29:43because belief always determines behavior, right?
- 29:47What I believe to be true is how I live my life.
- 29:51And so when you are examining evil behavior, you're really
- 29:56examining people's evil beliefs because it goes contrary to the
- 30:03authority of God's holy Word. So Paul comes along and says,
- 30:08look, you want to live a model life.
- 30:10You want to live the life that that that exemplifies Christ.
- 30:15Then you need to make sure you examine everything carefully.
- 30:20Every word that's spoken, every conversation that you have,
- 30:24every thought that goes across your mind, everything.
- 30:28Then say examine some things every once in awhile or it's
- 30:31good that when you come to church you live a life of
- 30:33examination. He says examine everything
- 30:36carefully and if it's evil, abstain.
- 30:42If it's wrong, abstain. If it's good, hold on to it,
- 30:45cling to it, never let it go, embrace it because if it's good,
- 30:52it comes from a God who is good. There was so much to say about
- 30:58this. I, I don't have the time to do
- 31:00it, but, but just let me give you 7 words, OK, 7 words.
- 31:05I like to say 7 words in 7 minutes, but that's a little far
- 31:08reaching. But 7 words that will help you
- 31:12in the arena of discernment. Number one is caution.
- 31:19Caution. We, we have thrown caution to
- 31:24the wind at church. We just accept everything.
- 31:30I mean, after all, it's church. Why wouldn't we believe what the
- 31:34preacher says? Why would we think that
- 31:36someone's unconverted? Why would we think that someone
- 31:40among us is undisciplined? We just accept the fact that
- 31:44we're all going to church. We all love Jesus and
- 31:47everything's good. But there's, there's, there's
- 31:52caution that must always take place.
- 31:57We assume because our children are good that whatever they,
- 32:00they, they watch on television or watch on their phone is good.
- 32:06We, we assume that, that our children's social media is above
- 32:10board. We, we just assume instead of
- 32:13examining our child's social media, instead of examining what
- 32:17our children are doing, we just assume that's going to be OK.
- 32:20We're very undiscerning. Most parents are asleep at the
- 32:24wheel. Most parents are not in tune
- 32:28with what's happening with their children.
- 32:31And as they get older, we just assume that they're going to be
- 32:33walking with Jesus. They're going to love Jesus.
- 32:36Things are going to be good. I mean, after all, they're going
- 32:38to church. Yeah, but what church are they
- 32:40going to see? Do you examine that?
- 32:43Do you scrutinize that? Do you analyze that?
- 32:46If you examine everything, you got to scrutinize the church
- 32:49your kids go to. But you see, as parents, we just
- 32:54tend, well, at least they're in church.
- 32:57See that that's just that's just so wrong.
- 33:00At least they're in church. What church?
- 33:03Where are they going? What are they hearing?
- 33:05Are they growing? What's happening?
- 33:10You see what we just so caution to the wind and therefore we're
- 33:14we're not a tune with with what's happening not only in our
- 33:17families, but in our churches as well.
- 33:20We just live lives so indiscriminately.
- 33:25We let so many things just fly under the radar and we just let
- 33:30things go. Told you before, as as parents,
- 33:34we are not helicopters, we are fighter jets.
- 33:39And if you're not a fighter jet as a parent, you're just a
- 33:42helicopter hovering around doing absolutely no good to anybody.
- 33:50You need to fight for your children's purity, fight for
- 33:53your children's marriages, fight for your children's personal
- 33:57lifestyle and help them understand the truth.
- 34:01That's that's God's truth and they live need to live by in
- 34:06order to be discerning. The first word is caution.
- 34:09You need to live a cautious lifestyle.
- 34:12You need to be aware of what's happening around you, what's
- 34:16happening in your family, what's happening with your children,
- 34:21because if you're not, then you're going to live an
- 34:26undiscerning life. You won't be able to decipher
- 34:29between that which is good and that which is which is wrong,
- 34:33that which is truth, and that which is error.
- 34:36And you need to know these things.
- 34:39First word is caution. The second word is compulsion.
- 34:46There's this compelling drive for discernment.
- 34:51Listen to what Solomon says. He says if you cry for
- 34:57discernment, lift your voice for understanding.
- 35:01If you seek her as silver and search for her As for a hidden
- 35:07treasure, then you will discern the fear of the Lord and
- 35:10discover the knowledge of the of God.
- 35:13For the Lord gives wisdom from his mouth come knowledge and
- 35:18understanding that there is this compelling drive to learn
- 35:24discernment. Lord, I want to be a discerning
- 35:28person. I want to know truth from error,
- 35:31right from wrong, good from best.
- 35:37I want to know those things. I don't want to be asleep at the
- 35:40wheel. So you cry out to God for
- 35:43discernment, and from God comes wisdom and knowledge.
- 35:47From the Word of God comes everything you need to make wise
- 35:50choices. But there's got to be this
- 35:53compelling Dr. this compulsion to learn it, because if not,
- 35:58then you won't. It comes back to the
- 36:02undisciplined life, doesn't it? It's a discipline.
- 36:08Requires work. Requires Dr. Requires intensity.
- 36:15Requires tenacity, requires passion.
- 36:20There's this compulsion that drives me to learn discernment
- 36:26so that I can help my family. I can lead my family.
- 36:34I can tell my children this is wrong.
- 36:37You got to be able to tell your children, no, you cannot date
- 36:41the unbeliever. You cannot do that because the
- 36:44Bible says you cannot be unequally yoked together and you
- 36:47got to be careful that your emotions fall into this thing.
- 36:49Once you start dating the unbeliever and you become or you
- 36:53fall in love with that unbeliever and you marry that
- 36:55unbeliever, it goes against God's command.
- 36:56You cannot do that. So you cut it off before it ever
- 37:00begins. That's a discerning parent.
- 37:04That's a, that's a fighter jet parent.
- 37:06A helicopter parent says, well, you know, if that, you know,
- 37:08whatever makes you feel good, if it feels good, that's OK.
- 37:12You know, we want you to be happy.
- 37:14No, no, no, no. You want them to be holy.
- 37:18We're so concerned about their happiness.
- 37:21Oh, but they're getting up in here at the 333435.
- 37:23We don't want them to be single forever, so it's OK.
- 37:28Better be single forever then marry the wrong one because then
- 37:33you'd be miserable forever. That's always a heartache.
- 37:38So there's this caution, there's this compulsion that takes place
- 37:42that drives me to the Scriptures to learn discernment #3 and that
- 37:51is that is, oh, by the way, this was Solomon's cry.
- 37:58Remember, God said, ask me what you wish and I will give it to
- 38:04you. You imagine God coming to you
- 38:06and saying, ask me whatever you want, I'll give it to you.
- 38:09What would you say? Solomon says I need discernment
- 38:14so I can I can, I need wisdom so I can discern between that which
- 38:19is right and wrong among the people of God.
- 38:22And God was so pleased that Solomon asked that that he gave
- 38:26him so much more other things, that Solomon became the wisest
- 38:31man whoever lived, and God used him mightily.
- 38:37James says if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask.
- 38:41That's a compulsive desire like Solomon had.
- 38:45But. But here's the caveat to this.
- 38:48Once there's a caution, once there's a compulsion, there must
- 38:52#3 be a capitulation. That is, that you must submit
- 38:58and obey everything that God says.
- 39:03Because we come to a place where we cry for discernment and God
- 39:05gives wisdom and knowledge and we begin to read and study and
- 39:08understand the word of God. And then it comes across
- 39:10something that we just don't necessarily like or agree with,
- 39:16and we think that somehow God is wrong.
- 39:20So there must be a capitulation, a complete undying submission to
- 39:25everything that God says. Why?
- 39:30Because the wisest man, whoever lived, didn't do that.
- 39:35Listen to what the Bible says in First Kings 11.
- 39:41First Kings 3, Solomon cries for discernment.
- 39:45God gives it to him. But the First Kings 11 it says
- 39:49this. Now King Solomon loved many
- 39:51foreign women, along with the daughter of Pharaoh, Moabite,
- 39:57Ammonite, Edomite, Sidonian, and Hittite, women from the nations
- 40:02concerning which the Lord had said to the sons of Israel.
- 40:06You should not associate with them, nor shall they associate
- 40:11with you, for they will surely turn your heart away after their
- 40:16gods. Solomon held fast to these in
- 40:21love. He had 700 wives, princesses and
- 40:27300 concubines. And his wives turned his heart
- 40:34away, for when Stalin was old, his wives turned his heart away
- 40:42after other gods, and his heart was not wholly devoted to the
- 40:45Lord his God, as the heart of David his father had been.
- 40:52Solomon did what was evil inside the Lord, and did not follow the
- 40:56Lord fully as David his father had done.
- 41:01Then Solomon built a high place for chemist, the detestable idol
- 41:06of Moab on the mountain which is east of Jerusalem, which by the
- 41:10way is Mount of Olives, and for Moab the detestable idol of the
- 41:14sons of Ammon. Thus also he did for all his
- 41:18four wives, who bird, incense and sacrifice to their idols.
- 41:24Now the Lord was angry with Solomon because his heart had
- 41:28turned, turned away from the Lord, the God of Israel, who had
- 41:33appeared to him twice, and it commanded him concerning his
- 41:37this thing. They should not go after other
- 41:39gods. But he did not observe what the
- 41:44Lord had commanded. So the Lord said to Solomon,
- 41:47Because you have done this and you have not kept my covenant
- 41:51and my statutes which I have commanded you, I will surely
- 41:54tear the Kingdom from you and give it to your servants.
- 42:00What a devastation. You see, he valued something
- 42:05more than God. He wasn't willing to submit and
- 42:09capitulate to the commandments of God because because he, his
- 42:15heart was turned, he found something more appealing to him,
- 42:21foreign wives. And the more he married, the
- 42:25more, the more he felt good about it.
- 42:27And yet it was a it was an abomination to God and, and he
- 42:30had turned his back on God and didn't fully follow God.
- 42:34He was wrong. That's because he wanted to be
- 42:39cautious. And so he had this compulsion to
- 42:44be discerning but would not capitulate to the commandments
- 42:47of God. Happens all the time.
- 42:51You know why it happens in your family.
- 42:54You know why you can't be discerning with your children is
- 42:58because you value their relationship more than you value
- 43:01the truth of God. You want to preserve a
- 43:04relationship that you think you have, but you do not.
- 43:11You think you have a relationship with them, but you
- 43:13can't have a relationship outside of truth.
- 43:16You can't. And So what do you do?
- 43:19You want to preserve something you think you have but you
- 43:23don't, in hopes that one day it'll be great.
- 43:27But it won't, because it'll ever be based on truth.
- 43:30You cannot have a relationship based on anything other than the
- 43:36truth of the living God. You'll have a semblance of of
- 43:40togetherness. You'll have some fun things that
- 43:45happen, but the trueness of a deep intimate relationship does
- 43:52not happen outside of truth. But because we value
- 43:55relationship over the truth, we will always compromise truth for
- 44:01the sake of relationship. That's always wrong.
- 44:04That's what Solomon did. God says you've lost it all.
- 44:09You've lost the Kingdom. God kept it peaceful until the
- 44:13end, but once he died, the Kingdom divided has never been
- 44:17the same sense. Why?
- 44:19Because he would not submit and capitulate to the truth of the
- 44:24wisdom and knowledge of God when it was spoken His word.
- 44:30I know my time is gone, but I got to finish because I because
- 44:36I want to finish. How's that?
- 44:40Nick's word is connection. Connect yourself to someone
- 44:47who's discerning. Latch yourself on to somebody
- 44:52who has a discerning spirit and learn from them.
- 44:56That's what Paul said. Insectivity 3.
- 44:58We said follow my pattern, Timothy.
- 45:02Follow my lifestyle, Timothy. Follow my doctrine, Timothy,
- 45:06connect with me. Follow the pattern of the
- 45:08Saints. Follow someone who truly has a
- 45:11deserting spirit, that knows what is right and what is wrong.
- 45:15Hook yourself onto them and just watch, look and listen.
- 45:21Good advice that Paul gave you Timothy, because it's sound
- 45:26advice. So so many times we find
- 45:29ourselves connected to people that are that are unruly,
- 45:34undisciplined. You ever noticed that?
- 45:37Remember what Paul says in in Second Thessalonians, he says
- 45:42this. Listen to this.
- 45:43He says verse 6 chapter 3 Second Thessalonians.
- 45:47Now we command you brethren, in the name of the Lord Jesus
- 45:49Christ that you keep away from every brother who leads an
- 45:53unruly life and not according to the tradition which you have
- 45:58received from us. If there is any brother who does
- 46:00not follow the commands of Scripture, do not associate with
- 46:03them. But you know what we do?
- 46:05We associate with them. We we cry for wisdom, we cry for
- 46:10discernment. And yet the Bible's very good.
- 46:11Do not associate with the unruly, the undisciplined
- 46:14person, because they'll turn you away from the Lord.
- 46:19They don't follow the the Scriptures, the authority of
- 46:21God's word. You can't associate with them
- 46:25even if they're in the church. They says this for you
- 46:31yourselves know how you want to follow our example because we
- 46:34did not act in an undisciplined manner among you.
- 46:38Connect yourselves to us, follow us.
- 46:41We were not disciplined. But yet you want to attach
- 46:43yourself to the unruly. You want to attach yourself to
- 46:46the undisciplined, You want to attach yourself to the
- 46:48unconverted, You want to attach yourself to the undiscerning.
- 46:51Why? Why do you do that?
- 46:53Paul says. Because we value a relationship
- 46:59over the value of the truth. That's why he goes on and says
- 47:05this verse 14. If anyone does not obey our
- 47:09instruction in this letter, take special note of that person.
- 47:15Examine everything carefully, carefully and do not associate
- 47:21with him so that he will be put to shame.
- 47:28You want you want to know why the unrepentant don't repent in
- 47:30the church is because we want to be friendly, unrepentant, and
- 47:36act as if nothing's really wrong.
- 47:38It's OK And they're not put to shame and they don't repent.
- 47:44We hinder their repentance by befriending them in their sinful
- 47:49state without confronting them in their sinful state.
- 47:55And Paul says this as he goes on.
- 47:58Yeah. Do not regard him as an enemy
- 47:59because he's not. He's your brother.
- 48:01But you would admonish him as a brother, rebuke him as a
- 48:05brother, confront him as a brother.
- 48:08That's what you do. Because you see, when you do
- 48:10that, he either or she either repents or they want nothing to
- 48:15do with you. See, if they repent because you
- 48:19admonish them, praise the Lord and you've won your brother.
- 48:24That's the right thing, so that there's this connection that you
- 48:28have with those who truly are discerning.
- 48:32And then there's this, there's mixed word word #5 is, is, is
- 48:38concentration. Concentrate all your efforts on
- 48:43on the truth of God's word. Concentrate all your energies
- 48:46and knowing what God says, His word, study to show yourself
- 48:50approved under God, a workwind that needeth not to be ashamed,
- 48:54rightly dividing the word of truth, a great intense
- 48:59concentration on the truth, and then the next word falls right
- 49:02after that and that is continuation.
- 49:05That is, you need to continue growing your walk with the Lord.
- 49:08Why? Because you never stop growing.
- 49:11There's this continuing aspect where I grow day after day after
- 49:15day. We continue to grow in the grace
- 49:17and knowledge of Jesus Christ our Lord.
- 49:22And so therefore we exercise discipline and discernment.
- 49:25And lastly, last word is contention.
- 49:31Always contend earnestly for the faith that was once for all
- 49:35delivered to the Saints. We're in a war, my friends.
- 49:40It's a war for the truth. It's a war that we stand on
- 49:44truth, live for live truth, honor truth.
- 49:47So we're to protect the gospel. We're to guard the gospel.
- 49:50We are to persevere in the gospel.
- 49:52We're to preach the gospel. We are to contend earnestly for
- 49:55the faith that was once for all delivered to the Saints.
- 49:58Fight for truth because truth is what matters.
- 50:03Let me pray with you, Lord, thank you for today and the
- 50:07opportunity to be together and pray that you'd use your word in
- 50:10our lives that we might be not undiscerning but completely
- 50:16discerning of that is all happening around us.
- 50:21To know what is right versus what is wrong, what is true
- 50:26versus that which is false. We pray this in Jesus name,
- 50:31Amen.
