Latest / THE DAILY BRIEF / Doubt cast on Russia's willingness to agree to energy ceasefire
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: We are ready today for energy ceasefire, as President Trump said.
- 0:04Speaker 2: But I'm not sure that Putin is ready.
- 0:06Speaker 3: So that's Ukraine's President Zelensky with us a bit earlier,
- 0:10Speaker 3: 30 minutes ago, in fact, reacting to the announcement from
- 0:13Speaker 3: this weekend about President Trump in an energy ceasefire. But
- 0:17Speaker 3: Ukraine says Russia continues to strike civilian and energy sites.
- 0:22Speaker 3: And a warning, a lot of this video is graphic,
- 0:25Speaker 3: like this one right here. So that was a drone
- 0:39Speaker 3: strike on Sunday, blasting a grocery store in eastern Ukraine.
- 0:44Speaker 3: Three people reported dead, nine injured, and President Zelensky telling
- 0:48Speaker 3: us why a ceasefire is needed for a lasting peace.
- 0:54Speaker 4: After Russian attacks, we lose 20, from 20 to 30 people,
- 0:58Speaker 4: just civilians.
- 1:00Speaker 5: It's not about soldiers.
- 1:01Speaker 2: I'm speaking about people. This is awful. This is a
- 1:04Speaker 2: big tragedy. That's why we need ceasefire to communicate, to
- 1:10Speaker 2: find a diplomatic way of ending this war. And, of course,
- 1:14Speaker 2: ceasefire is a good first step from both sides. This
- 1:19Speaker 2: is very important.
- 1:20Speaker 4: And if Russia doesn't want to support ceasefire.
- 1:24Speaker 2: I don't know why. I think the only one reason
- 1:26Speaker 2: that they don't want to stop this war.
- 1:29Speaker 3: So former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo is a Fox
- 1:32Speaker 3: News contributor. Sir, good day to you and thank you
- 1:33Speaker 3: for your time. There are a lot of cross currents
- 1:35Speaker 3: in this war right now, and some of them directly
- 1:38Speaker 3: affect American consumers. Do you believe this energy ceasefire is
- 1:44Speaker 3: something that could stand up?
- 1:48Speaker 2: Well, Bill, I must say, I hope that it is.
- 1:51Speaker 4: And as it sounds like President Zelensky hopes that it
- 1:53Speaker 4: is as well. But multiple offers for ceasefires have been
- 1:56Speaker 4: presented by Mr.
- 1:57Speaker 2: Kushner, Mr. Witkoff, President Trump himself.
- 2:00Speaker 4: And Putin to date has rejected every single one of
- 2:03Speaker 4: them time and time again.
- 2:05Speaker 2: And so I suspect he'll reject this one as well.
- 2:07Speaker 4: He clearly thinks it's in his nation's best interest to
- 2:10Speaker 4: continue this, to bomb civilians, to go after schools and
- 2:14Speaker 4: energy infrastructure inside of Ukraine, especially as winter's approaching.
- 2:17Speaker 2: He thinks that's going to achieve his endgame.
- 2:20Speaker 4: I wish it weren't so, but it seems to me
- 2:22Speaker 4: unlikely that the Russians will actually engage in an energy ceasefire.
- 2:26Speaker 1: Specifically on energy, one of the things that Treasury Secretary
- 2:29Speaker 1: Scott Besson said over the weekend was that the Europeans
- 2:32Speaker 1: are also complicit, I guess you could say, in paying
- 2:36Speaker 1: Russia in order to keep this war going.
- 2:38Speaker 3: Watch.
- 2:39Speaker 5: The Europeans have given the Russians more money since the
- 2:44Speaker 5: start of this war than they have given the Ukrainians
- 2:47Speaker 5: because they cannot wean themselves off Russian energy. They had
- 2:51Speaker 5: a failed energy policy, and Vladimir Putin, they continue to
- 2:57Speaker 5: fund him. So for them to say that we cannot
- 3:01Speaker 5: have a respite in diesel pricing is completely hypocritical.
- 3:07Speaker 1: It really keeps coming back to this issue of energy.
- 3:10Speaker 1: And coming up in this winter, it's energy plus desperation
- 3:16Speaker 1: on both sides, perhaps. And then you add a third level,
- 3:18Speaker 1: which is either increased technology in terms of weapons or
- 3:22Speaker 1: a lack of weapons.
- 3:23Speaker 3: To fight back.
- 3:26Speaker 2: Yeah, Dana, I think that's true.
- 3:27Speaker 4: And Secretary Besson's point about European hypocrisy, it's actually worse
- 3:31Speaker 4: than that. The fact that the Europeans have become so
- 3:35Speaker 4: heavily dependent on Russian energy over the last decade, and
- 3:38Speaker 4: we'd warned them about it as far back as when
- 3:40Speaker 4: I was Secretary of State.
- 3:42Speaker 2: Now leads to precisely where they are.
- 3:44Speaker 4: And the Europeans have for now, gosh, five years, I
- 3:47Speaker 4: guess this has been going on since February of 2022,
- 3:49Speaker 4: have continued to fund the Russian war machine by buying
- 3:52Speaker 4: energy from Russia. So they have nothing to stand on
- 3:55Speaker 4: here with respect to President Trump now saying, well, we
- 3:58Speaker 4: need some diesel.
- 3:59Speaker 2: I doubt there's much diesel to be delivered.
- 4:01Speaker 4: I doubt that in the next three or four weeks,
- 4:03Speaker 4: this will actually change energy prices. And frankly, I wish
- 4:06Speaker 4: it were the case that the United States hadn't gone
- 4:08Speaker 4: down this path. It seems to me we ought to
- 4:11Speaker 4: be doing everything we can for America to make sure
- 4:14Speaker 4: that this war ends quickly. And giving Vladimir Putin more
- 4:17Speaker 4: money is akin to underwriting the Iranians as well.
- 4:20Speaker 2: More money, more terror, more horrors.
- 4:23Speaker 4: That's the pattern for these evildoers like Vladimir Putin and
- 4:26Speaker 4: the Ayatollah.
- 4:26Speaker 3: On the topic of energy, Saudi Arabia continues to be
- 4:29Speaker 3: an issue. Over the weekend, there was a direct strike
- 4:31Speaker 3: on the airport in Riyadh. several people killed from many
- 4:36Speaker 3: different countries, including the United States. The president was asked
- 4:39Speaker 3: about that as well. Watch here on Saturday. Have you
- 4:42Speaker 3: decided whether to join the Saudi strikes on the... We may.
- 4:45Speaker 3: We're going to look at it. How soon? We just
- 4:46Speaker 3: found out about the recent attack. So we'll make a decision.
- 4:51Speaker 2: We move very quickly.
- 4:55Speaker 3: This is a new front that got super hot this weekend.
- 5:00Speaker 3: How do you cool it down and can we?
- 5:04Speaker 4: Bill, some ways it is a new front, but in
- 5:06Speaker 4: some ways it's the new front's the same as the
- 5:08Speaker 4: old front. This is the Iranian regime 40 years on now.
- 5:12Speaker 4: You cool it down by winning. You cool it down
- 5:15Speaker 4: by defeating them. You have to take away their capacity
- 5:17Speaker 4: to inflict this kind of terror, right? Firing at civilians
- 5:20Speaker 4: at an international airport. It's unacceptable. I heard President Trump's remarks.
- 5:25Speaker 4: I've been in the room when we've talked about the
- 5:27Speaker 4: relationship between the United States and Saudi Arabia. It won't
- 5:30Speaker 4: surprise me at all if the president ends up taking
- 5:33Speaker 4: the necessary actions to convince the Iranians to stop bombing
- 5:36Speaker 4: Saudi airports and Saudi infrastructure that impacts Americans horribly adversely
- 5:41Speaker 4: in a way that raises energy prices and now has
- 5:43Speaker 4: killed an American as well.
- 5:46Speaker 1: The other thing is that air travel across the world
- 5:50Speaker 1: is one of those things where you look at this
- 5:52Speaker 1: and you think, well, you think you're safe flying, but
- 5:54Speaker 1: it's not necessarily the case. In addition to the 13
- 5:56Speaker 1: people who were killed, 300 people were injured, some of
- 5:58Speaker 1: them critically in Saudi Arabia. So A quick final word
- 6:02Speaker 1: about what people should be thinking as we head into
- 6:04Speaker 1: the holidays.
- 6:06Speaker 4: Yeah, there's no doubt about it. The Iranian regime is
- 6:09Speaker 4: intent on using every last tool that they have available.
- 6:12Speaker 4: And they now resorted to going after civilian aircraft at
- 6:15Speaker 4: commercial airports. It's way out of bounds. I'm convinced that
- 6:19Speaker 4: the world needs to unite to stop it. I'm convinced
- 6:21Speaker 4: we will. But for Americans who are thinking about traveling,
- 6:24Speaker 4: we just need to be cautious, do our best, and
- 6:26Speaker 4: then do the things we need to do to continue
- 6:29Speaker 4: to live our lives in the face of this horrible
- 6:31Speaker 4: terror from the Iranian regime.
- 6:32Speaker 3: There's a lot happening. Mike Pompeo, thanks for sharing time
- 6:35Speaker 3: with us today.
- 6:35Speaker 4: Thank you.
- 6:36Speaker 2: Bill and Dana, great to be with you all. Thanks.
