- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here. It's Tuesday, it's the 21st of
- 0:16April and it's great to have your company.
- 0:19Thanks for tapping on play, thanks for inviting me in.
- 0:21Whether you are just getting things kicked off, whether you
- 0:24are kicking back on holidays, having a lovely relax, or
- 0:28whether you're thinking, ah, holidays, ah, this is the time
- 0:31when the world of the retiree becomes awfully busy because
- 0:34everyone else has got the day of two or wherever you are in
- 0:37between. So good to have your company as
- 0:40we put down all of that and we come before God to read his word
- 0:45together and to learn a little bit more about who God is and
- 0:50how he has moved in our world. And today we continue the story
- 0:55of the Israelites settling into their land as they are led by
- 0:59Joshua to take possession of this their inheritance.
- 1:04Yesterday they took possession of the town of I and burnt it.
- 1:08And now after conquering the centre of this land of Canaan,
- 1:12they begin to the South where they will encounter some more
- 1:16folk. So let us continue with this
- 1:19journey together friends, as we read together Joshua Chapter 9.
- 1:33Now all the kings West of the Jordan River heard about what
- 1:37had happened. These were the kings of the
- 1:39Hittites, Amorites, Canaanites, Perizzites, Hivites, and
- 1:43Jebusites who lived in the Hill Country and the western
- 1:47foothills and along the coast of the Mediterranean Sea as far
- 1:50north as the Lebanon Mountains. These kings combined their
- 1:54armies to fight as one against Joshua and the Israelites, but
- 1:59when the people of Gibeon heard what Joshua had done to Jericho
- 2:02and I, they resorted to deception to save themselves.
- 2:07They sent ambassadors to Joshua, loading their donkeys with
- 2:11weathered saddlebags and old patched wineskins.
- 2:15They put on worn out patched sandals and ragged clothes, and
- 2:20the bread they took with them was dry and mouldy.
- 2:23When they arrived at the camp of Israel at Gilgal, they told
- 2:27Joshua and the men of Israel, We have come from a distant land to
- 2:32ask you to make a peace treaty with us, The Israelites replied
- 2:36to the Hivites. How do we know you don't live
- 2:38nearby? For if you do, we cannot make a
- 2:42treaty with you, they replied. We are your servants.
- 2:47But who are you? Joshua demanded.
- 2:49Where do you come from? They answered, Your servants
- 2:53have come from a very distant country.
- 2:56We have heard of the might of the Lord your God and of all he
- 3:00did in Egypt. We have also heard what he did
- 3:04to the two Amorite kings east of the Jordan River, King Saihon of
- 3:08Heshbon and King Ogg of Beshan, who lived in Ashtaroth.
- 3:13So our elders and all our people instructed us take supplies for
- 3:18a long journey. Go meet with the people of
- 3:21Israel and tell them we are your servants.
- 3:24Please make a treaty with us. This bread was hot from the
- 3:28ovens when we left our homes, but now, as you can see, it is
- 3:32dry and mouldy. These wineskins were new when we
- 3:36filled them, but now they are old and split open, and our
- 3:40clothing and sandals are worn out from our very long journey.
- 3:45So the Israelites examined their food, but they did not consult
- 3:48the Lord. Then Joshua made a peace treaty
- 3:52with them and guaranteed their safety, and the leaders of the
- 3:55community ratified their agreement with a binding oath. 3
- 4:00days after making the treaty, they learned that these people
- 4:03actually live nearby. The Israelites set out at once
- 4:07to investigate and reach their towns in three days.
- 4:12The names of these towns were Gibeon, Kefira B Roth and
- 4:16Kiriath Jiram, but the Israelites did not attack the
- 4:21towns, for the Israelite leaders had made a vow to them in the
- 4:24name of the Lord, the God of Israel.
- 4:28The people of Israel grumbled against their leaders because of
- 4:31the treaty, but the leaders replied, Since we have sworn an
- 4:35oath in the presence of the Lord, the God of Israel, we
- 4:39cannot touch them. This is what we must do.
- 4:42We must let them live, for divine anger would come upon us
- 4:46if we broke our oath. Let them live.
- 4:49So they made them woodcutters and water carriers for the
- 4:52entire community. As the Israelite leaders
- 4:55directed, Joshua called together the Gibeonites and said, Why did
- 5:00you lie to us? Why did you say that you live in
- 5:03a distant land when you live right here among us?
- 5:07May you be cursed. From now on you will always be
- 5:11servants who cut wood and carry water for the House of my God,
- 5:16they replied. We did it because we, your
- 5:19servants, were clearly told that the Lord your God commanded his
- 5:23servant Moses to give you this entire land and to destroy all
- 5:27the people living in it. So we feared greatly for our
- 5:30lives because of you. That is why we have done this.
- 5:34Now we are at your mercy. Do to us whatever you think is
- 5:37right. So Joshua did not allow the
- 5:41people of Israel to kill them, but that day he made the
- 5:44Gibeonites, the woodcutters and water carriers for the community
- 5:48of Israel and for the altar of the Lord, wherever the Lord
- 5:52would choose to build it. And that is what they do to this
- 5:56day. Our Lord, thank you for the
- 6:08story. Thank you that as we read it, we
- 6:11read of this deception that was perpetrated against your people
- 6:15and against you. And Lord, we see that when
- 6:18others become deceivers and lower themselves to that, I mean
- 6:22desperate times and desperate measures and all that, but when
- 6:26they choose to tread that path, Lord, you continue to be
- 6:31trustworthy and faithful. And when that promise was made,
- 6:37you honour that promise even under those circumstances.
- 6:41Ah, Lord, may you inspire us that no matter what we
- 6:45encounter, no matter what tricks we have played against us, that
- 6:50we maintain who we are. We are your children, we are
- 6:56members of your family, and we belong to your Kingdom.
- 7:01And no matter what happens to us, that identity is rock solid.
- 7:05And that and that alone shapes how we engage this world.
- 7:12Thank you for first loving us and for choosing us and
- 7:15forgiving us. And we did nothing to deserve
- 7:18that. And Lord, may we, your people,
- 7:23choose to be like this in the world around us.
- 7:27And you know we're going to need the help of your spirit to do
- 7:29that. So Lord, embolden us and shape
- 7:33us through your Spirit so we truly can bring your Kingdom
- 7:36here just as it is in heaven. And we pray all of this in your
- 7:42saving name, Jesus, Amen.
