- 1:15Philip Marlowe. The original air date October the fifteenth, nineteen forty nine,
- 1:21and the tititle the Stranglehold, Get This and Get It Straight. Crime is
- 1:26a Sucker's Road and knows who travel and wind up in the gut at the
- 1:27prison of the Grave. This time a wrestler on This Kid's a quick change
- 1:32artist in an alley, and a girl with a n eye for angles.
- 1:34All met destruction because one hundred thousand easy bucks caught him in a stranglehold which
- 1:40none of them wanted to break. From the pen of Raymond Chandler, outstanding
- 1:45author of crime fiction, comes his most famous character in the Adventures of Philip
- 1:49Morrol. Now with Gerald Moore starred as Philip Morbo, we bring you tonight's
- 2:04exciting story, the Stranglehold. Sometimes men climb all over themselves for a purpose,
- 2:29sometimes for relaxation, and most times for no reason at all. Take
- 2:32professional wrestlers. I watched on the ringside while two got ganstau and hulks and
- 2:37sorted their features in mock agony and bulged muscles at each other on a mat,
- 2:40surrounded by tears of onlookers screaming through their half chewed popcorn, while the
- 2:46fans, as usual, howl for blood, booed the decision, booted the
- 2:49departing contestants, and waited for the next comic act, laughingly called the main
- 2:53event. I went again over the letter I'd received two hours ago by messenger
- 2:58from one Manny Favor included a ring side ticket to LA Wrestling Arena, a
- 3:01check for two hundred dollars, and the request that I catch as much as
- 3:05I could stomach of the match between John bettan Honors Peachey Kings and Jules Caesar,
- 3:10the Emperor of Brooklyn, after which I was to come to Favor's house
- 3:14for instructions that involved John Keene plus one hundred thousand bucks of Manny Favors money.
- 3:20So I watched a little closer as something that looked like a Sherman tank
- 3:23and a toga and leather sandals crowned with an olive grief, lumbered into the
- 3:27ring and sneered at the cloud. And since I'd long ago given up wrestling
- 3:30as a sport, I turned to the hall next to me, wearing a
- 3:32Derby on the bridge of his nose, waved a cloud of cigar smoke aside
- 3:36and got some information. Oh season, Hey, you get your money's white
- 3:38out of him? All right? Hey, what about this John Keen?
- 3:42How does he stack out him? A pechee? You Kenny the farm stink
- 3:45or no show off off? A plank town fips a ring up from now?
- 3:50Get this? Ha? What's that flower? Yeah? You peach blossoms?
- 3:53These two peach blossoms all over his corner. Eh? What stuff?
- 3:58Two years ago to Tober's okay, but I was tired. You know what
- 4:00I mean? He won't even put on a show a little raftling. He's
- 4:03still call the champions man. Yeah, he won't need your lab for anymore.
- 4:09It's afraid of getting his pretty norlse bred. What I'm m season time
- 4:13up and not he comes fucking yet. Yeah? See what I mean with
- 4:19that profile? You want to be a rookie click instead of a raffling.
- 4:23Yeah. Hey, what's that on the back of his robe? You kutin?
- 4:25That's a big patio course, embroidered call on black silk. How do
- 4:29you like? Yeah, yeah, yea, yeah, yeah he look.
- 4:31I hear him robes coross on one thousand bucks of pace. He thinks they
- 4:34make them hot stuff with the tame Maybe they do those a brunette and there
- 4:39talking with him? Should I know? There's always something like that and I
- 4:41look quite down? Will you make get talks to him? Tonight program a
- 4:49free Paul No Limit contest of wrestling in its conor seventy eight pound the outstanding
- 5:00contenda from the Atlantic Seaboarder and Emperor Brooklyn. Here you won't cheada in this
- 5:12corner at two hundred and twenty five pounds the young disputant Tampina of the Western
- 5:18Hemisphere con begin. The match got underway and Techie started out of his corner.
- 5:27A good looking brunette shouted something out him and stopped him cold. He
- 5:30turned to Claire out him in the season, slapped a hank on him and
- 5:32foot sec flat on his back for fall number one. Three minutes later with
- 5:36his head McGilligan, Pachi was well on his way to I'm out again for
- 5:40fall number two, which was enough for me. So I got up to
- 5:43leave. The brunette I noticed was leaving too, and at the end of
- 5:46the exit tunnel we came outside by side. You got a match? Oh
- 5:49yeah, sure, thank you? The mess, isn't it? Eh?
- 5:53What's the mess? Way things are going inside there? Pach had to change
- 5:57his line of work. Don't you think you laugh so far? What's it
- 6:01to you? You said something to him that knocked him for a loop?
- 6:04Baby? What was it? A personal matter? Oh? How personal?
- 6:09Ooh about like that? Thank you and step down, Philip Marlowe, and
- 6:15you'd better step out too, or I'll whistle for a John dom nine night
- 6:18nod so saying she flashed a couple of daggers at me from a snapping black
- 6:25eyes, spun on four and a half inch red and pat leather heel,
- 6:27and was gone. So I drove up the Hollywood land and my house of
- 6:30two thousand Beach would drive where I was to meet my client, Manny Flavor.
- 6:34The house looked like a two room cottage from the street, but it
- 6:38ran for three stories down the back side of the hill. All I did
- 6:41was touch the bell when the door flew open. Your model, am I
- 6:45right? Come on in mordw I'm many favor head of Favorite Transcriptions Incorporated produced
- 6:49radio shows. You know, so you saw me? You saw that big
- 6:53crooked four flashing stupid matt pounding master doone that calls himself Johnny pitch Keen?
- 6:58Huh yeah, I saw him? Or have a chair? Ok, well
- 7:01what do you think he just summed it up? What's that got to do
- 7:04with you? One hundred thousand Bucksminster paper. You haven't seen the late editions,
- 7:08No, they're full of it. Peachie Keen is suing me for one
- 7:12hundred gees for slander, having your slander a guy like Peachi. It's impossible.
- 7:16I know that, and you know it. But does a court of
- 7:19law know it. No, in fact, they're going to make it stick.
- 7:24How did it happened? I'll tell you. A very sweet guy named
- 7:27Frank Gainor Yeah, I know, I'm a sports commentator, Yes, says
- 7:29he's been doing five a week on my label and going big. But three
- 7:32days ago what we've been expecting for months finally happened to rest his soul A
- 7:38week ticker and just like that, he dropped dead on the street heart failure.
- 7:43Yeah, right about it. Well, the Frank always kept five broadcasts
- 7:46ahead see made tape recordings in his own little studio, So I've been running
- 7:49his last five shows as a final tribute to him. Well, what happened
- 7:54yesterday? The whole fifteen minutes of his broadcast was devoted ripping apart John Pitchikey.
- 8:00Here listen, I've got the tape here on the machine. This is
- 8:03one part applied on the sports world. And furthermore, I have proof that
- 8:07John Page Keane has so much the highest bidder in small time gambling circles in
- 8:11his last three matches. Now I know for a fact that he has become
- 8:15so blatant in his unhanded dealings that even as dubious a business at professional wrestling
- 8:20cannot stand the strength, and officials have threatened to buy him from the rank.
- 8:24I can't know beyond the doubt that John pg Keene has falsified medical reports
- 8:28to a made tough competition, and that he eventually it goes on like that,
- 8:31Marlow. Some of its opinion, most of it fact. And it's
- 8:35the facts that my lawyers tell me. I've got to find the proof for
- 8:39or be a dead duck. That's why I asked her to come up here.
- 8:41I excuse me. This is probably Ruth, Frank's wife. I show
- 8:46people once Hello, Ruth, come in, honey, Hello man. I
- 8:52cannot imagine where Frank got his information or Ruth shake hands with mister Marlow.
- 8:56He's the detective. I've told you about that, missus Marlow. How are
- 9:01you doing right now, missus Gainer Manny, here's the key to Frank's private
- 9:03studio at sixty one twenty two sunset. It might be a good place in
- 9:07mister Morrow's start. Yes, all his fires and equipment are there. Frank
- 9:11didn't like to work at home or at my plant on the strip. Wanted
- 9:15his own private setup. We looked there, but maybe we missed something Okay,
- 9:18I'll see what I can find. Oh, by the way, do
- 9:20either of you happen to know a good looking brunette connected in some way with
- 9:22Peachy? No, but he's quite a ladies man. I understand why,
- 9:26Marrow. It's just a hunch I saw him talking to one night. A
- 9:28fireball may mean nothing. Well, I hope you'll be able to locate the
- 9:33proof of Frank's statements. Marlow, We've got to find it for Frank.
- 9:37Also, it'll break my heart to pay one hundred grand to no good meat
- 9:41he but named pitache Keene. I promised favor, I'd keep in touch and
- 9:50left. I found Gain his little recording studio tucked into the second floor corner
- 9:54of a small office building on Sunset. Unlocked the heavy soundproof door and went
- 9:58in the room had a busy, cluttered look, as though Gainer himself were
- 10:01just step dot. A roll of filing cabinets in the desk sat along one
- 10:05wall and opposite them, but with the glass in boot of the tape recorders
- 10:07and microphone by which the solitary sportscaster at Canada's radio programs. I dug through
- 10:13the files and found a folder label John King that held only a sketchy history
- 10:18of the wrestler, some publicity pictures, and a few clippings, one of
- 10:20which waded a long second look because it was topped by a picture of the
- 10:24same brunette I'd seen at the ringside, was capturing Colin Bennett leaves for West
- 10:30Coast. I started to read the story when there was a sound at the
- 10:33door behind me and the lights went out. Don't move, mighty, he'll
- 10:37kill you on the spot if you do. Up against that window. You
- 10:39make a perfect target. You know. They don't try anything cute. What
- 10:45do you want a little more than I'm getting it to I'm a title to
- 10:48it. I am the service is randed. You might say, I can't
- 10:52help you, bustyve Kmber the wrong man, but not to the wrong place.
- 10:56So mighty, So there's things first, Like I always say, Oh
- 11:03my dear, it's not yeah, get me sleepy boy. Oh oh all
- 11:28right, all right, all rush me? Oh Morrow? Where were you?
- 11:37Something wrong? As wrong as the lima showing up here with this oh
- 11:41with the slug on me Miami, Ye, why do you slug you?
- 11:46Good questions? Fab Hey, there's the name color Bennett? Ring any bells?
- 11:52Yeah, No, No, I never heard of it, right,
- 11:54huh just a minute, model, he's rude, I remember that. I'm
- 12:00sure Frank interviewed her once. Caller Bennett used to be missus John Keene's x
- 12:05y. Yes, I'm positive. Why she mixed up in it, I
- 12:09don't know. Blimy slugged me, apparently took a newspaper clipping about her when
- 12:13he left. Least it's gone followed its blimey, But that only was off.
- 12:18He said he wanted more than he was getting. It would look paper
- 12:22made this call. What he want to tell you? That he'll be out
- 12:26checking on a few things himself. That's all. Oh, bright away,
- 12:30ruth Any idea whether this Benett dame might be found? No, I haven't
- 12:33followed. I think she was staying at some woman's hotel on Vermontavene when Frank
- 12:37interviewed her at that time. That was over a year ago. Maybe she's
- 12:41a lady of habit. I'll try it anyway, Thanks, Ruthie. There
- 12:50were three exclusively female hotels on Vermont, and the second one I called had
- 12:54a call of Bennett registered. So I went out to my car and they
- 12:56beat my aching head down Vermont of Victoria Plaza, Lady his Own Way hotel.
- 13:01The lobby was done in ivory and pink, with desk trug to match
- 13:03from the nameplate tagged as mister Seymour Prett. I started over, but stop
- 13:09when I spotted about an acre of peach colored swede coat wrapped around Jehan peache
- 13:11Keen himself lumbering up the stairs at the back of the lobby. Mister Pratt
- 13:16sawn at the same time and doted from behind the desk like an angry canary
- 13:20after her. Right, just a minute, you, this is a lady's
- 13:22hotel, So what I gotta see the one in two twelve? Not this
- 13:26way. You don't why it's f to midnight. It's Miss Bennett wishes to
- 13:31come down to the lobby. That's her affair, but no men are allowed
- 13:33upstairs after ten pm. Okay, okay, how can I get use the
- 13:39house phone? Naturally over there in that booth. I'll go right back to
- 13:43the board and put you in. I'll be with you in just a moment,
- 13:45sir ducky, I wait a call for you, Miss Bennett. Good
- 13:54listening? Huh? But now see here, you know perfectly well you're not
- 13:58supposed to come back to this. This is for employees only. What about
- 14:01eaves dropping? Is that for employees only too? I'll take you guy in
- 14:07the blue fairs, a professional wrestler if he finds out you're listening, and
- 14:09he'll tell you I'm off and beat you to death with it. Let me
- 14:11take over higging me the air, No wait and on getting me Okay,
- 14:16I sit there like a good boy. Keep the key opening your trap shut.
- 14:20No surprise worrying out? John the lovey in the phone booth. You
- 14:24better come down, carl it. I'm tired. What do you mean by
- 14:28that crack you made tonight when I was in the ring? Just what I
- 14:31said. I want a nice big slice of that one hundred thousand you're getting
- 14:33from many favors, right, You're crazy? What makes you think I'd give
- 14:37you one losy penny? Yeah you will gladly. You see, John,
- 14:39I know all about those visits you made the delight seemed sitter bartibles come back
- 14:43to La. Hasn't it done? Why shut up? After the life you
- 14:48led me for four years? Your big a time entitled all I can get
- 14:50and that'll be plenty. So I advise you to run right back now and
- 14:54tell your friend that I know all about your little scheme and talk it over.
- 14:56Good John. I'll be waiting to hear from you, all right,
- 15:00I'll do it just that. And you're you're gonna be sorry you stuck your
- 15:03note into this one. Carla, really interesting. Are you quite quite finished
- 15:09now? Yes? And you were a big, big help, mister Pratt.
- 15:13There he goes Peechee, sweet oat and all so wrong, Seymour in
- 15:28just a moment the second act of Philip Marlowe, but first Horace heightened his
- 15:33famous youth opportunity program of joined Charlie McCarthy and Edgar Bergan, Red Skelton,
- 15:37Jack Benny and the other top ranking entertainers who make CBS Sunday Nights a most
- 15:41enjoy these thirty minutes when Horace Height takes over on most of these same stations
- 15:46Sunday Night, This fall to me, tune in this fall for the show
- 15:52that you love best of all, here's the address Insane. Now with our
- 16:03star Gerald Moore, we returned to the second actor of Philip Marlowe and tonight's
- 16:08story The strangle Hold. When Pee Chee Keene slammed out of the phone booth
- 16:22he was burned to a crisp. He stomped out of the Woman's hotel via
- 16:26the back door that opened out of the parking lot, and when I got
- 16:29there was already out of sight. By stopped in the shadows to figure out
- 16:32which way he's gone, but skip that as the back door opened again.
- 16:34This time it was Carla Bennett. She ran across the lot hopped into a
- 16:38new green convertible. We got as far as switching on the lights before still
- 16:41another character pranced into their head right beams like a veteran ham making for upstage
- 16:45center A way I gotta talk to you. I couldn't tell where the first
- 16:51one came from. I only heard it brought the little man up on his
- 16:55toes and notched him like a drawn bowl. I saw the flash of the
- 16:57second one. It came from the alley incumbled them into a pile. A
- 17:00moment later or more in the world, and I ran the way I could
- 17:03see with a pair of tear lights, switching onto the side street. It's
- 17:07all the good it did me. I went back to the body of the
- 17:10little man as Color then climbed out of her car. She was white and
- 17:12shocking, and the headlights and make up was garish along then a clong a
- 17:17back alley halloquannade was suddenly very grim. He was shot, mister, right
- 17:22in front of me. He's a little guy, Colin. I don't know
- 17:25what it was t before. You know my name? Yeah, I met
- 17:29at the wrestling arena earlier at night. You remember Marlow, a private detective.
- 17:33Now, come on, Colin, let's happen. What's his name?
- 17:34I don't know you? Okay, we better find out fast. Let's take
- 17:37a look at his wallet. No, it's none of my business. I'm
- 17:41getting out. He Wait a minute. He wanted to talk to you pretty
- 17:42badly, baby, very likely about one hundred grand by were you'd stick around,
- 17:47he got awfully big ears, mister Marlow. Yeah, better to hear
- 17:49phone conversations. What these guys and actors got me with a card? Name
- 17:53is seth cameo mean anything not to me? Unless what unless he happens to
- 18:00work at the Lyceum theater. As you said, color Wood was back in
- 18:04town. And that brings up another point. You better out here anyway,
- 18:07I thought you did, Pratt. I came from the alley so witch you
- 18:11again. I might have that man. That man there on the ground,
- 18:17good heavens which he dead? Yeah, he's murdered. Oh no, sir,
- 18:26I'm getting out of don't loan you, No, I'm going with you.
- 18:27Listen, figures I can take care of myself. Will you beat it?
- 18:30That's not the point, sister. I still want to talk to you.
- 18:32Get in. I go out that way to the street, and not
- 18:34too fast, all right, and you're running things where we're going Lyceum Theater
- 18:41on the way. You can tell me why your ex husband Peachey's been hanging
- 18:42around there. I don't know what a friend he's been seeing was a cameo?
- 18:47I don't know that either. I look, for Pete's sake, Do
- 18:48I have patroya picture a man was shot down right in front of you.
- 18:52Doesn't not convince you? Fucking the same opposition, baby, And believe me,
- 18:55this is no time to hold out, not in miss league. I'm
- 18:56not all right. Well, that stuff you're heard on the phone was pure
- 19:00bluff. I accidentally ran into John a couple of days ago near the stage
- 19:03door of the Lyceum. He he acted funny, like he was waiting for
- 19:07somebody, and very nervous about it. You didn't see who it was oh.
- 19:11I waited until three girls and two men had come out, one after
- 19:12another, but they were cagy. I couldn't tell which one John was waiting
- 19:17for. And then I heard about this slander suit of his, and I
- 19:19figured something was squowy. So he took a swing in the dark tonight and
- 19:22connected and good and solid. When I told him on the phone to go
- 19:26back to his friend, I knew he'd be just stupid enough to do it,
- 19:29And that's why I came out so fast. I wanted to follow him
- 19:30and find out who else is involved before I got in too far. You're
- 19:33already into far, baby. You got more nerve and good sense even for
- 19:37one hundred grand. You don't believe me, asked Cameo as a fitter park
- 19:41here, will walk over? Look, tell me something big here. Suppose
- 19:45Seth Cameo did work here? What's it gonna prove? All depends on what
- 19:48we're trying to go with it. He was killed to keep him from upsetting
- 19:52the apple Pie. One way he could have done that would be to have
- 19:55proof of what Frank Gaine has said in his broadcast about Peachy Sure, but
- 19:57fitting a bottle. The actor at the light him into that slot doesn't make
- 20:00sense. Oh yeah, there it is Cameo's pracket. We were right,
- 20:04Yeah, Seth Cameo, the one man all star cast see Lionel Barrymore,
- 20:11Betty Davis, Hory Drugger, Humphrey Boogod, James Kagmu, and many others
- 20:17in East Ben played in a split second changes by the world's most versatile one
- 20:21man cast. Sure he was a mimic guy like that would have dial like
- 20:25slots of them. So maybe Seth Cameo is the boy who slugged me and
- 20:29gain his studio was capitaler turned out the light first, then he threw that
- 20:32liney give that made it touss me off the track. And what's more,
- 20:34he oh we got company a little over there, Yes, po, last
- 20:41show has been all hard. I know you're the night watchman. That's right
- 20:45now you better move along, kids, No lighter than around here. Just
- 20:48a minute pop this Seth Cameo. Does he have a lining number in his
- 20:49act? Why you come back tomorrow and ask him? Well, that's suffered
- 20:52and you think, mister how about it? Does he do a liney?
- 20:56Well, she taught me English don't control. Might have one time though,
- 21:00been in the business for years. Good man too, best quick changer I
- 21:03ever seen. M he got a scrap book or something in his dressing room
- 21:07you know where. Yeah, yeah, he has got a boxer whatever bill
- 21:11he's ever played on in it most actors. But say there's all closed off.
- 21:15Well you got a key, haven't you look? Prop? It's important,
- 21:17we gotta find out right away, But I'm sorry, I can't do
- 21:19it. It's really important. Take a good look, really important. Buck
- 21:26Uh huh. I guess it wouldn't do any harm if you just want to
- 21:33hook. The old man slid the ten into his pocket like he wouldn't admit
- 21:41it even to him. Slow and let us in the stage door, down
- 21:44the stairs, and with his flashlight along the dark hole where the set cameos
- 21:47dressing room. He unlocked it, reach the in and turn on a tired
- 21:49little lamp and pointed out a box on a trunk near the back. We
- 21:53picked our way over there, through a jumble of costumes that have been period
- 21:56pieces of the turn of the century, was lined with sentimental posters, and
- 22:02inside was a man's life, the stacks of programs and play buildings, again
- 22:07with a crisp kind of appearance and then ran back to the world of Seth
- 22:11Cameo's Dusty. Yesterday's didn't take long, maybe five minutes. Here this is
- 22:18it, Mallow, exactly what you appen to see that Propidentata, Kansas City,
- 22:21September nineteen forty Seth Cameo of London in Piccadilly Circus Magage the Navy.
- 22:25Lymehusband, sure, this is it, baby, Seth Cameo and Limey were
- 22:27one and the same. And where does that get you? It gives me
- 22:30an idea. It gives me one too. You found what you wanted.
- 22:33Now let's put everything back like it was and get out here in a minute.
- 22:37Pop, I want to check something else. Yeah, no, honey,
- 22:38this is dead against all rules. I'm getting call it. I heard
- 22:44something upstairs, so like the outside doing, I'll come now. As for
- 22:48that's an old stunt to for work. That door's got a snap last I
- 22:52heard it through that time. There is somebody up there. Eh, you're
- 22:57right here, can name or topers, a prey or something like it?
- 23:02Now? Now look you too, you stay right here and don't touch nothing
- 23:04to like it. Back here, I'll go see where one better switch off
- 23:07the lights. Callar, the breaks are going against us. What do you
- 23:10mean all this after hours theater business can't be coincidence. Weather came upstairs.
- 23:15There's trouble on his mind. You ask for a payoff, baby, and
- 23:18that's what you're gonna get. Only the bank one hand. Look at the
- 23:19mob, will yeah. You what you're doing here? You're the night watchman
- 23:22around here's John get yeah, but you can no pun intended. I want
- 23:29to see it here now you go on, get out. Don't lie to
- 23:33me Grand car parking. I'm worried you. Come on, I mean business,
- 23:38it is near. Don't you give me none of your sass. Son,
- 23:41You just clear out. You you got the watchman. You better play
- 23:48it out. Car every down here in another minute. Look go up that
- 23:51way and across the stage. Go to two thousand Beachwood. It's the one
- 23:52place, Peach. You won't call many favorites. And stay there till I
- 23:56call you. Understand my mind? Beat it well? Here, go on
- 24:00careful, big ears. Collum moved off into the darkness. I saw at
- 24:04the other end of the hall the inquisitive beam from the flashlight poking me in
- 24:07the dark corners. As Keen eased down the stairs, I got my gun
- 24:12into my hand, plastered my shoulders against the wall beside the open door,
- 24:15and with it. I didn't have long to wait. I heard him stop
- 24:18in the hall outside, and then the beam of the flashlight crept over the
- 24:22floor and up to the wall and slowly, carefully circled the door frame color.
- 24:29I heard him moving closer, and the barrel of a snub nose revolved
- 24:33inched into the room. I know you're in here, Carla. I waited
- 24:37until I could see the big fist walk around the gun, and I brought
- 24:40my thirty eight down hat his gun through to the floor, and I swung
- 24:44again, Chris Head, that's the only drinking lunch from me. Your problem,
- 24:55big man, All down, gold down, stay down. Oh,
- 25:07you got to check that got down like a tree. It had been short
- 25:15but vicious, and the one punch he'd landed had shaken me to my shoelaces.
- 25:21The wreckage of costumes props in a lifetime of old theater programs were scattered
- 25:25over the room like big moldy snowflakes and the crazy ankle high glare in the
- 25:29still burning flashlight. As I sat down on the which wanted to catch my
- 25:33breath, I saw something that brought me right back to my feet again.
- 25:37An illustrated program from the King's Theater and Buffalo that gave me a new slant
- 25:41on a whole mess. It builds. Seth cameo as the man with a
- 25:44Thousand Voices, the perfect mimic the act that had followed him for a thirty
- 25:47week run. Was a girl his face I knew well. I ran out
- 25:51of the theater in the nearest cab stand, where I said one driver to
- 25:52get the police over to the theater, and with another I headed for many
- 25:56favorites place on Beechwood and what I was positive would be another murder. When
- 25:59I got the the front door, I knew those no need to hurry.
- 26:03It was all over money and Mala, I've got news for you. It
- 26:08was colored with a gun in her hand and the flow in the corner,
- 26:11her face tight with pain, with missus Ruth Kane a glaring hate up at
- 26:15me like a wounded panther. There she is model. I recognized her as
- 26:18soon as I saw her. She's the one Peachy was waiting for outside the
- 26:22Lyceum Theater. They've been working together all this time to frame that slander suit
- 26:25against favor. Yeah, yeah, I know, but I didn't expect to
- 26:27find you like this. What happened? She knew I recognized her and pulled
- 26:30this gun on me. Once she used on seth cameo, no doubt.
- 26:33Huh huh. She was gonna use it on me too, but I was
- 26:36way ahead of her. She's only in love with John Peachey Keane, but
- 26:38I was married to him for four years. And you don't live with a
- 26:41professional wrestler that long without picking up a few tricks. They call you the
- 26:45weaker sex. What is it, Ruthie? Your elbow is it broken?
- 26:48Let me alone, your two bit flat foot. I'll call her doctor and
- 26:52get you fixed up. For one reason only. I don't even like to
- 26:56see a black widow spider suffer more coffee, Miss Barnett. No, I
- 27:10don't blame you. I've got no reppetite either, you know, Marlow.
- 27:14I always liked Ruth and I thought she liked me as long as you represented
- 27:18a buck. She did, and I've got to admit that she and the
- 27:19wrestler were clever. Though that stunt almost worked. She was clever. John
- 27:23Keen is two hundred and twenty five pounds of solid jerky. Yeah, it
- 27:26was all her idea. She was in love with Peach, and when Frank
- 27:30died, she saw a great opportunity, especially with that mimic being in town.
- 27:33Sure, Seth Cameo is an old friend of hers. She and Peache
- 27:37wrote a highly slander of script. She got Cameo or recorded on Frank's machine,
- 27:41imitating Frank's delivery. Yes, and I broadcasted and stabbed myself in the
- 27:45back exactly. And we've never found out any of this if a couple of
- 27:48other characters hadn't tried to cut in. First Cameo, who felt he'd been
- 27:52cheated when he learned the job he'd done was worth one hundred grand. Who've
- 27:56had to shoot him to keep him quiet? Second little caller here, model,
- 28:00please with me. It was just good healthy spight Spider, what stronger
- 28:06baby Spike or Doe? Well, see what I mean? And night,
- 28:11mister Faban, come on, Color, let's go. We didn't go home
- 28:29directly. We went on our Beechwood drive high into the Hollywood Hills Park where
- 28:34we could look out over the sparkling, sprawling city. And then we talked
- 28:41about color, the life, relative values the city below us, and the
- 28:48dark hills above. And then as we watched the first faint glimmer of dawn
- 28:52and rise in the east, we both realized something I read you very complex
- 29:02and certainly not sophisticated, but very gratified. The phil analysis the best things
- 29:07in life. We both agreed, that's still free, you know what I
- 29:12mean. The Adventures of Philip Marlowe Bringing You Raymond, Chandler's most famous character,
- 29:40star Gerald Moore and are produced and directed by Norman MacDonald. Script is
- 29:45by Robert Mitchell and gene Leavitt. Featured in the cast were viv Janis,
- 29:48Ted Bonelts Charlotte, Lawrence, Barney Phillips, Tony Barrett, Peter Leeds,
- 29:53and Julius Matthews. The special music is composed and conducted by Richard o'rond.
- 30:03Be sure and be with this next week. When Philip Marlowe says, I
- 30:07didn't know it, but I was caught in a smokeout that led from a
- 30:10search for a lady in black. I asked murder at a highway, in
- 30:14the gunfire, in a crumbling warehouse, and all for a girl already dead
- 30:19in the morgue. This fall. You hear them all on CBS. Red
- 30:37Skelton and Charlie McCarthy and Edgar Bergen have joined the parade to CBS on Sunday
- 30:41evenings, and be sure to hear the Contented Hour with Dinah Shore tomorrow and
- 30:48every Sunday over most of these same CBS stations this fall. You hear them
- 30:52all on CBS. This is Paul Masterson speaking, I'll stay tuned for Gangs,
- 31:00which follows immediately over most of these same CBS stations. This is CBS,
- 31:14the Columbia Broadcasting System. Welcome back. If that plot sounded a little
- 31:30bit familiar, then you've been listening to the show a while. There was
- 31:36an episode we played back in September. Original air date was March twenty sixth
- 31:41of nineteen forty nine, so about six and a half months before this one,
- 31:48and the plot of that story involved a newspaper publisher, excuse me,
- 31:52magazine publisher who hired Marlowe because a column published by a recently deceased calumnist was
- 32:01about to get the magazine sued. It should be sounding really familiar now if
- 32:06you heard it. That was episode thirteen seventy three, The Green Flame,
- 32:12and this episode is very similar. There's of course some changes, particularly with
- 32:17the wrestling inserted, but to me feels very much the same story. Of
- 32:22course, in defense of the repeat, it's worth noting that during this run
- 32:28of the Adventures of Philip Marlowe, the program was on the air for one
- 32:35hundred and three straight weeks without a break, you know, no summer break,
- 32:42and there may have been one week off in there, because it seems
- 32:45by calculation should be about one hundred and four. But other than that,
- 32:50a lot of programs and stories, though you might have one recycled in the
- 32:57midst of that, just trying to keep up with that mass for scripts.
- 33:00I did like how they made the wrestling match feel real, did a good
- 33:05job on that, and I think Tony Barrett really helped, as the very
- 33:09loud wrestling fan, even a greater sense of realism. Now we turn to
- 33:14listener comments and feedbacks for some thoughts on The Adventures of Philip marlow Gordon says
- 33:22regarding episode fifteen twenty three, Tale of the Mermaid, a good episode.
- 33:30Sharon Williams says, isn't it funny that what an enormous amount of money it
- 33:36was back then? Referring to the seventy five thousand dollars necklace. And indeed,
- 33:42that is one of those things when you listen to radio where it can
- 33:47be kind of humorous when you think about it, when people are acting like
- 33:52what we would consider a small amount of money is a big deal. I
- 33:57mean, you consider this line from It's a Wonderful Line when mister Potter is
- 34:00trying to buy off George Bailey. I'm offering you a three year contract starting
- 34:07at twenty thousand dollars per year, which is not a big deal these days,
- 34:14but these old films and radio shows are testament to how much value there
- 34:21used to be in money and sort of the effects of inflation on it all.
- 34:28And then we have a comment from Twitter with aug King of Bation asking,
- 34:35I love your programming, A big fan of Johnny Doller, wondering if
- 34:38Rocky Jordan or Sherlock Holmes will make the lineup. Well, an answer to
- 34:44your question, Rocky Jordan will certainly eventually be on the program, probably a
- 34:49couple three years down the line. It's one of the more requested programs.
- 34:54And right now I'm thinking after Richard Diamond, which has been one that people
- 35:00have been asking us about since we started the show. Sherlock Holmes. We've
- 35:05already done. That was in our lineup for the first nearly four years.
- 35:09I don't think quite but close to four years. And you can listen to
- 35:15all the Sherlock Holmes episodes archives dot Great Detectives dot net. All right,
- 35:20well, that will do it for today. If you do have a comment,
