- 0:00Speaker 1: Hi, We're back the iHeart Music Lounge here in Hartford,
- 0:06Speaker 1: headquarters for the Yukon Sports that were Dan Hurley with us.
- 0:09Speaker 1: Tuesday Night final tune up for a coach Hurling and
- 0:12Speaker 1: the Huskies. They'll host Michigan State Downtown. People's Bank Arena
- 0:16Speaker 1: been refurbished. At broadcast coverage, it's seven hard art countdown,
- 0:20Speaker 1: a tip off, and then Way Norman joins me. Game
- 0:22Speaker 1: broadcasts seven thirty Yukon Sports Network coach. Let's talk just
- 0:26Speaker 1: one big picture question here. You know, the last few
- 0:30Speaker 1: years it's been different in terms of building teams.
- 0:33Speaker 2: A lot of coaches left the game.
- 0:35Speaker 1: They didn't want to deal with the various parts of
- 0:38Speaker 1: NIL and you know, paying players et cetera, et cetera.
- 0:42Speaker 1: So they they just didn't want to bother with it.
- 0:44Speaker 1: And some coaches even today are saying, I'm not going
- 0:46Speaker 1: to recruit freshman. I'm not going to do that. I'm
- 0:48Speaker 1: going to get guys from other teams that are developed already.
- 0:51Speaker 1: You have not gone and totally in that direction. Can
- 0:54Speaker 1: you tell us why?
- 0:55Speaker 2: Yeah? I just.
- 0:58Speaker 3: You know, you don't want it to be like, you know,
- 1:01Speaker 3: like a like a G League team. I mean you
- 1:03Speaker 3: you I think all of us myself, you know, Kamani Luke,
- 1:08Speaker 3: the players that we bring in, I mean, they're in it.
- 1:11Speaker 3: He asked for for championships and to give them the
- 1:14Speaker 3: best chance to to get to the NBA or you know,
- 1:18Speaker 3: play at the highest level of a professional ball get
- 1:20Speaker 3: a great education at a world class university. But you know,
- 1:23Speaker 3: people are you know, we're we're we're about the relationships
- 1:27Speaker 3: and we're about like, you know, coaching a guy for
- 1:32Speaker 3: you know, years and watching that young man develop, you know,
- 1:37Speaker 3: as a player, as a person, as a thinker, you know,
- 1:41Speaker 3: and just being a part of that process is uh,
- 1:44Speaker 3: you know, it's just special. I mean, that's what That's
- 1:47Speaker 3: what gives you a sense of purpose, you know, and
- 1:50Speaker 3: just as coaches like if and again I fell into
- 1:54Speaker 3: this last year where like you know, in a conversation
- 1:57Speaker 3: with Gino helped a lot, just trying to get recentered,
- 2:00Speaker 3: where if like if the only thing you're in it
- 2:02Speaker 3: for is to win a national championship, you know, and
- 2:05Speaker 3: just championships and team and you forget about that relationship,
- 2:09Speaker 3: you forget about that sense of purpose where you're helping
- 2:12Speaker 3: raise and develop young men. You know, it becomes an
- 2:16Speaker 3: an empty exercise for you, and you're rarely going to
- 2:20Speaker 3: be happy because you you you can't win it every
- 2:23Speaker 3: year or close to it unless unless your geno. You know,
- 2:27Speaker 3: like it's just you know, on the men's side, it's
- 2:30Speaker 3: just it's it's it's not a realistic thing unless you
- 2:34Speaker 3: you know, I guess maybe you know coach would yeah
- 2:39Speaker 3: right and stay one and every year that was in
- 2:41Speaker 3: the seventies and players stayed for I mean if I
- 2:46Speaker 3: had Clinging and Steph for four years, wow, three or four,
- 2:51Speaker 3: if they had to stay for three years, it probably
- 2:53Speaker 3: could have won.
- 2:54Speaker 2: We would have won last year, I think.
- 2:56Speaker 1: So yeah, different, it was different obviously. So you you're
- 3:00Speaker 1: not afraid to mix and match with a roster. Bring
- 3:03Speaker 1: freshmen in a couple of transfers. We're gonna start talking
- 3:06Speaker 1: about the personnel now, but let's go to the freshman first.
- 3:10Speaker 1: When you are looking at a kid to come to
- 3:12Speaker 1: Yukon play for you, what kind of qualities stand out
- 3:15Speaker 1: for you?
- 3:15Speaker 3: Well, I would say the other thing too, is like
- 3:17Speaker 3: we all hate uncertainty, Like uncertainty is the worst most
- 3:20Speaker 3: people just it drives you crazy. You know, most people
- 3:23Speaker 3: would rather see tell me what's the challenge, like what
- 3:26Speaker 3: am I dealing with right now? Like rather than uncertainty
- 3:30Speaker 3: and for me, like when a season ends, if I've
- 3:33Speaker 3: got to recruit a whole new roster. And that's kind
- 3:36Speaker 3: of what sent me into a tailspin as soon as
- 3:38Speaker 3: this past season was over, where you know, I gave
- 3:41Speaker 3: some consideration to taking a gap year, maybe just getting
- 3:45Speaker 3: out of the profession, was because of that uncertainty that
- 3:49Speaker 3: was surrounding the roster.
- 3:50Speaker 2: It just I did not like that.
- 3:54Speaker 3: So you know, know one that you're going to have
- 3:58Speaker 3: a group of players on a yearly basis that believe
- 4:01Speaker 3: in what you're doing, are not looking at it totally transactionally,
- 4:06Speaker 3: and just believe in the organization and what you're trying
- 4:09Speaker 3: to do and care about it the way Solo Ball did,
- 4:13Speaker 3: the way Jalen Stewart did, the way Jayden Ross did.
- 4:17Speaker 3: That's kind of what brought me back with my heart
- 4:22Speaker 3: as a coach. But that uncertainty thing sucks.
- 4:25Speaker 2: Yeah, no question about it.
- 4:27Speaker 1: A couple of the guys who went out in the
- 4:29Speaker 1: portal and you picked up Malachi Smith, guy we saw
- 4:32Speaker 1: with Dayton.
- 4:33Speaker 2: He's a pain in the butt, he tells me.
- 4:36Speaker 3: He reminds me like about that game too, And I
- 4:39Speaker 3: try to remind him it was like a seventh place game.
- 4:43Speaker 3: We didn't play in the final four, Like that was
- 4:45Speaker 3: a it was a crap game.
- 4:48Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean it was a getaway.
- 4:49Speaker 3: He has I guess he has bragging rights, but I
- 4:52Speaker 3: mean it's not like they went on to an awesome
- 4:54Speaker 3: season after that.
- 4:56Speaker 2: No, So I remind him of that. Good good Yeah,
- 4:59Speaker 2: put them in his place. He's a player. Yeah, well
- 5:01Speaker 2: what kind of guy is he?
- 5:02Speaker 1: Because we got a chance to see him against Boston
- 5:04Speaker 1: College of the Day at the Mohegan Sun and already
- 5:08Speaker 1: I can see the guy that gets under people's skin in.
- 5:10Speaker 2: A good way. Yeah, the impact player.
- 5:14Speaker 3: Just a awesome energy guy, makes plays both ends of
- 5:21Speaker 3: the court. You know, it's got that Brooklyn you know,
- 5:24Speaker 3: Bronx type of New York you know, kind of swagger
- 5:28Speaker 3: and confidence and joyfulness. So he's got this great personality
- 5:32Speaker 3: in the locker room. He's fun to be around. He
- 5:35Speaker 3: makes plays all over the court. You know, you could
- 5:38Speaker 3: play him with Silas because Silas has got pretty good size,
- 5:42Speaker 3: you know, any and he could run your team for you.
- 5:44Speaker 3: It's it's a you know, I think that we're in
- 5:47Speaker 3: a good spot at that position.
- 5:48Speaker 1: Yeah, and you've done what you needed to do kind
- 5:52Speaker 1: of reload in the backcourt a little bit with Silas memory, right,
- 5:55Speaker 1: and Malachi Smith and whatever other guys you have solo obviously,
- 6:00Speaker 1: but Silas is a bigger version or maybe a similar
- 6:03Speaker 1: version to Tristan Newton you've said.
- 6:05Speaker 3: You know, I mean, you're never at the same position,
- 6:08Speaker 3: So whether it's center or or point guard on the wing,
- 6:11Speaker 3: you're trying to get people that'll compliment each other and
- 6:13Speaker 3: have different skills. So with with Silas, just you're kind
- 6:17Speaker 3: of getting us back to where we've got a bigger
- 6:19Speaker 3: point guard, you know, a bigger point guard that's defensive.
- 6:22Speaker 3: You know, that's that that's excellent defensively to help us.
- 6:26Speaker 3: You know, one of the you know, the biggest issue
- 6:27Speaker 3: with last year's team was was just how bad we
- 6:30Speaker 3: were defensively relatively speaking. And then but he's got size,
- 6:35Speaker 3: you know, he's a he's a ball hawk on defense,
- 6:37Speaker 3: Silas he uh, you know, with the way that we
- 6:40Speaker 3: the way that we put our guards in position offensively,
- 6:43Speaker 3: they're in the paint a lot with the hell we
- 6:46Speaker 3: run our offense. So you just need a taller guard
- 6:49Speaker 3: to be able to throw throw those lot passes to
- 6:51Speaker 3: our centers that are rolling, and to be able to
- 6:54Speaker 3: find those windows to throw the ball through to our
- 6:56Speaker 3: three point shooters, or be able to finish the rim
- 6:59Speaker 3: the way Tristan was because he's got good size. You know,
- 7:01Speaker 3: if you're sometimes just those smaller guards. Last year we
- 7:04Speaker 3: were like really small at point guard, and you know,
- 7:07Speaker 3: those guys they get they get swallowed up when they
- 7:09Speaker 3: get in the paint. They have a hard time finishing
- 7:12Speaker 3: at the rim. So, you know, Silas has been back
- 7:15Speaker 3: now for probably it's had about five practices coming back
- 7:18Speaker 3: from the calf, and you know, it's been it's been
- 7:22Speaker 3: good to see him out there.
- 7:24Speaker 2: It's you know, it's it's exciting.
- 7:25Speaker 3: He's going to bring an element that we haven't had
- 7:27Speaker 3: since the twenty fourteen all
- 7:29Speaker 1: Right with Dan Hurley as the Yukon men's basketball coaches show,
- 7:33Speaker 1: we're back in a moment on lear Field,
