Latest / DEEP INSIGHT / Trump HALTS strikes on Iran
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Yeah, hey, Kevin, good afternoon. For now, the United States
- 0:03Speaker 1: has halted strikes against Iran as tension remains high across
- 0:07Speaker 1: the Middle East. The White House has indicated that a
- 0:10Speaker 1: variety of options remain on the table for President Trump
- 0:14Speaker 1: as he explores options involving force and diplomacy.
- 0:18Speaker 2: Every once in a while, they're going to set some
- 0:21Speaker 2: things up, but they don't have much left. And by
- 0:22Speaker 2: the way they are talking to us right now, they'd
- 0:24Speaker 2: love to make a deal. I don't think they're ready to.
- 0:27Speaker 2: I don't think it's time yet, but I'm willing to listen.
- 0:30Speaker 2: But they cannot have a nuclear weapon.
- 0:34Speaker 1: White House Communications Director Stephen Chung told Fox News Digital
- 0:37Speaker 1: that President Trump has always been consistent in saying he
- 0:40Speaker 1: prefers a diplomatic solution, but he continues to retain all
- 0:43Speaker 1: options if Iran continues terrorist activities in the Strait of
- 0:47Speaker 1: Hormuz or against allies. Now, the US naval blockade remains
- 0:51Speaker 1: in effect as the economic pressure is being felt inside
- 0:54Speaker 1: of Iran.
- 0:56Speaker 2: So sok economic situation is much for US than previous years.
- 1:00Speaker 2: Who take inflation into account, it may have nearly doubled,
- 1:03Speaker 2: incomes have fallen, and the value of our currency has declined.
- 1:07Speaker 2: All of this has an impact and life has become
- 1:09Speaker 2: a bit.
- 1:09Speaker 1: More difficult, as US and Aranian officials say, diplomatic efforts
- 1:14Speaker 1: are ongoing to reach a deal that could end the
- 1:16Speaker 1: current escalation. The Iran backed Hooties and Yemen are once
- 1:19Speaker 1: again in direct conflict with Saudi Arabia after attacking two
- 1:22Speaker 1: Saudi owned oil tankers last week. The Saudis responded with
- 1:26Speaker 1: heavy air strikes against the Yemen based proxy group. The
- 1:28Speaker 1: Huthis then ramped up attacks on Saudi oil refineries, launching
- 1:32Speaker 1: new missiles over the weekend. Days ago, President Trump issued
- 1:35Speaker 1: a warning to the Houthies, saying that if attacks on
- 1:37Speaker 1: vessels in the Red Sea continue, that both the Hooties
- 1:40Speaker 1: and Iran would pay a military price. There are a
- 1:42Speaker 1: lot of moving parts in the region, but we know
- 1:45Speaker 1: the US military build up continues in order to give
- 1:47Speaker 1: President Trump a variety of options moving forward.
- 1:50Speaker 3: Kevin Trey yanks for US in Tel Aviv Tree as always,
- 1:53Speaker 3: we thank you for that. For more now in the
- 1:55Speaker 3: war with Iran, we want to bring in Fox. Who's
- 1:57Speaker 3: contributor Kiroen Skinner. She's a former direct of Policy Planning
- 2:01Speaker 3: at the US State Department. Always a pleasure to have
- 2:04Speaker 3: you with us, and this is one of those storylines
- 2:06Speaker 3: that continues to evolve. Kiren, you and I have had
- 2:09Speaker 3: a chance to talk about not just where we are,
- 2:11Speaker 3: but I think most people would like to know, certainly
- 2:13Speaker 3: from a political perspective, where we are going. What is
- 2:16Speaker 3: your assessment at this hour, even as the President takes
- 2:19Speaker 3: a pause for the day, I was.
- 2:22Speaker 4: Just pleased to see that you put upon the screen
- 2:25Speaker 4: the statement by the White House Communications Director Stephen Chung.
- 2:31Speaker 4: He's absolutely right. Diplomacy has always been the preferred method
- 2:35Speaker 4: of President Trump. The critics who are saying that he
- 2:39Speaker 4: has created a forever war should just listen to his
- 2:42Speaker 4: words and watch the methods that the US has used
- 2:47Speaker 4: in this military conflict since it began in Earnest last February,
- 2:53Speaker 4: he has focused on diplomacy and building regional partnerships and support.
- 2:59Speaker 4: And I think this pause after nearly two weeks of
- 3:03Speaker 4: kinetic activity are consistent with what he's been saying and
- 3:07Speaker 4: what he has been doing. In Oman, for example, there
- 3:12Speaker 4: is a serious effort to negotiate with the Iranians. President
- 3:17Speaker 4: Trump is taking a pause and part to see what
- 3:20Speaker 4: comes out. Of those talks. He has also put forth
- 3:24Speaker 4: this idea of a civilian nuclear program for the Saudist
- 3:29Speaker 4: that would be tied to recognizing Israel through the Abraham Accords.
- 3:35Speaker 4: The regional approach is what's taking place now. President Trump
- 3:40Speaker 4: is spending an enormous amount of time and his team,
- 3:44Speaker 4: like the UN ambassador talking to the Gulf States and
- 3:49Speaker 4: then those over in the Levant, trying to build a
- 3:53Speaker 4: larger coalition that will basically encircle Iran and make it
- 3:59Speaker 4: come to the table for good. This time now that
- 4:03Speaker 4: seems almost impossible, but it's really one of the key pathways.
- 4:08Speaker 4: And that's how I see this respite in the US
- 4:12Speaker 4: military activity. But make no mistake, they're working really hard
- 4:17Speaker 4: for the next move.
- 4:18Speaker 3: Yeah, I'm glad you mentioned the possible nuclear deal with
- 4:21Speaker 3: Saudi Arabia. I want to play bibn net and Yahoo.
- 4:24Speaker 3: He addressed that on this morning show with the Morning
- 4:27Speaker 3: Sunday Morning Futures with Maria Bartiromo, and he really unpacks
- 4:31Speaker 3: why again to your point, there are regional partners that
- 4:36Speaker 3: are attempting to not just isolate the regime but also
- 4:39Speaker 3: eventually perhaps even lead to change in Tehran.
- 4:41Speaker 5: Listen to this President Trump was absolutely right in stating
- 4:46Speaker 5: that condition. You know that Saudi Arabia would get a
- 4:51Speaker 5: civilian nuclear program in exchange for a normalization of relations
- 4:56Speaker 5: with Israel. Remember that we had for peace agreements between
- 5:01Speaker 5: Israel and ab nations broken by President Trump. With my
- 5:05Speaker 5: working together with me, it's a great achievement, historic achievement,
- 5:09Speaker 5: and obviously we'll be delighted if we could extend it
- 5:12Speaker 5: to Saudi Arabia and other countries.
- 5:15Speaker 3: The idea of being, of course chiren. Basically, if this
- 5:19Speaker 3: goes according to the White House's plan, partners in the
- 5:22Speaker 3: region like Saudi Arabia would not just have civilian energy,
- 5:25Speaker 3: they would also perhaps have other partners in the region
- 5:28Speaker 3: that might do as much. But there are people who
- 5:30Speaker 3: have made the suggestion that this is hypocritical. The Iranians
- 5:33Speaker 3: simply want to do the same thing with their nuclear program.
- 5:37Speaker 3: I'm not saying most people buy that, but there are
- 5:39Speaker 3: those who have made that argument. Tell me where that
- 5:41Speaker 3: is wrong.
- 5:43Speaker 4: Well, I think it is a challenging proposition, frankly, because
- 5:47Speaker 4: the fact of the matter is, if the Saudis do it,
- 5:51Speaker 4: then you've got Turkey, You've got others that will come
- 5:53Speaker 4: along and say why not me, why not us? And
- 5:58Speaker 4: we have to be concerned about the possibility of a
- 6:00Speaker 4: kind of regional arms race in this regard. So I
- 6:04Speaker 4: think it is important to think through this civilian deal
- 6:08Speaker 4: possibly with Saudi Arabia and what it means in terms
- 6:12Speaker 4: of other neighbors who are going to say we want
- 6:14Speaker 4: to keep up as well. But at the same time,
- 6:18Speaker 4: civilian nuclear programs can be incredibly important for domestic prosperity
- 6:25Speaker 4: and the export activities of a nation. And President Trump
- 6:31Speaker 4: is trying to figure out how do I get economic, commercial, military, security,
- 6:38Speaker 4: energy deals across the board, and he's being very creative
- 6:42Speaker 4: in this way and floating some ideas. Some may work,
- 6:45Speaker 4: some won't. But there will be tight controls on the
- 6:49Speaker 4: Saudi civilian program if in fact it happens, and it's
- 6:53Speaker 4: not a done deal. Even if there's an agreement that
- 6:56Speaker 4: sign it will evolve over time.
- 7:00Speaker 3: Obviously they're hoping to expand the Abraham Accords. That will
- 7:03Speaker 3: be an important element of all this. Kyraen Skinner, A
- 7:06Speaker 3: real pleasure to have you with us on a Sunday.
- 7:09Speaker 3: I know you're very busy. I always appreciate your time.
- 7:11Speaker 3: Have a good weekend well, It's great being with you always.
