- 1:27Speaker 7: How are you great?
- 1:30Speaker 1: This is? This is your time of year right?
- 1:34Speaker 5: It is?
- 1:35Speaker 1: Indeed so whose idea eleven years ago was Fat Bear Week? Matt?
- 1:43Speaker 7: It was started by a park ranger in my position
- 1:46Speaker 7: eleven years ago. His name was Mike Fitz and uh,
- 1:51Speaker 7: he's noticed that people were watching bears and really enjoying
- 1:55Speaker 7: their their activities and playfulness, and you wanted to broadcast
- 2:02Speaker 7: that out to the greater world and through technology through
- 2:07Speaker 7: placing webcams and Catmi National Park. You brought that about.
- 2:13Speaker 1: How surprised are the people involved with all of this
- 2:16Speaker 1: This thing has become what it is worldwide.
- 2:21Speaker 7: It's amazing that it has really grown so quickly and
- 2:27Speaker 7: that people really love watching these bears. Over a million
- 2:31Speaker 7: people vote in this and it looks like we're going
- 2:34Speaker 7: to shatter the total the totals from last year. It's
- 2:39Speaker 7: just amazing, over a million votes from one hundred different countries.
- 2:43Speaker 7: People are tuning in. Eleven million people around the world
- 2:47Speaker 7: watch these bears and webcams annually, not just not just
- 2:52Speaker 7: during the contest, but but while the cameras are operational
- 2:57Speaker 7: during the summer.
- 2:59Speaker 1: So yeah, now when does that start every year? And
- 3:03Speaker 1: then I'm guessing after this is over, it will be
- 3:07Speaker 1: ending fairly soon because the bears will be going to hibernation,
- 3:11Speaker 1: will they not? That's right.
- 3:15Speaker 7: The factory Week itself started on the twenty third, yep,
- 3:22Speaker 7: and goes goes until the thirtieth. But the cameras are on.
- 3:27Speaker 7: We tune them on in June usually. Okay, so you
- 3:32Speaker 7: can watch the bears. You can watch it right now
- 3:34Speaker 7: and into the fall and winter, and yes, the bears
- 3:38Speaker 7: are fattening up for hibernation. They start going into hibernation
- 3:44Speaker 7: and later in October and in November.
- 3:48Speaker 1: What what is it in your mind about bears that
- 3:50Speaker 1: fascinates so many people?
- 3:54Speaker 7: Just the characters?
- 3:55Speaker 8: You know?
- 3:56Speaker 7: For me, that's why I'm in this career. Love watching wildlife.
- 4:01Speaker 7: You're constantly surprised. John Murror said that in national parks
- 4:06Speaker 7: there's an exuberance and color and strange motion and energy
- 4:12Speaker 7: that's admirably calculated, surprize, frightened, charm and shake up people
- 4:18Speaker 7: even the least sensitive out of apathy and into newness
- 4:22Speaker 7: of life. However, olderly their excursions are aimless again and again,
- 4:28Speaker 7: and the stillest and calmnest scenery they will be brought
- 4:32Speaker 7: to a standstill, hushed and awestricken before phenomena wholly new
- 4:38Speaker 7: to them. And that's so true for me in my career,
- 4:44Speaker 7: my life in the Park Service, that ten different national
- 4:49Speaker 7: parks across the country. I just love watching animals, and
- 4:53Speaker 7: I think people really are surprised by the antics of
- 4:57Speaker 7: the bears, and you gotta every day doing something different there.
- 5:03Speaker 7: They have different styles. There some bare of snorkel for fish,
- 5:07Speaker 7: and there's a dash and grab and there's it's just
- 5:12Speaker 7: so exciting to see them interact.
- 5:15Speaker 1: I read where this is an exceptional year for salmon.
- 5:21Speaker 7: Yeah, it really is amazing and it's the ah you
- 5:27Speaker 7: people said that they had a term for it. I
- 5:35Speaker 7: forget the actual word, but it means the river is
- 5:41Speaker 7: literally boiling with salmon. It looks like that. You really
- 5:44Speaker 7: have to see it to believe it. It was just
- 5:48Speaker 7: so stuff with salmon this year and people haven't seen
- 5:52Speaker 7: that in their lifetimes. I haven't seen that something like that.
- 5:57Speaker 7: They could get barely, uh get enough room to jump
- 6:01Speaker 7: up over the falls because there was so many salmon
- 6:05Speaker 7: in the water beneath the falls.
- 6:06Speaker 1: So is there a theory as to why this year
- 6:10Speaker 1: has been so exceptional?
- 6:14Speaker 7: Yeah? Guess like five years ago was COVID and they
- 6:21Speaker 7: were less less fishing boats in the water that year. Yep,
- 6:26Speaker 7: and it's just a gas. Yeah, it may have something
- 6:31Speaker 7: to do with that. There's a like a four or
- 6:34Speaker 7: five year cycle of salmon where they go out into
- 6:36Speaker 7: the ocean and then come back and it takes them
- 6:40Speaker 7: about that amount of time. So maybe it's from that.
- 6:45Speaker 1: I mean, I know that it goes in cycles. I
- 6:48Speaker 1: know you've seen really good salmon years and really bad
- 6:50Speaker 1: salmon years over the years that you've been there, Right.
- 6:54Speaker 7: That's true.
- 6:54Speaker 1: Yeah, but this one just I don't. Is this one
- 6:58Speaker 1: of those ones that no one's coming?
- 7:02Speaker 7: Yeah? People were shocked. I'm shocked. It's uh yeah, who
- 7:09Speaker 7: didn't expect as many salmon to come back? It's unbelievable.
- 7:16Speaker 1: So because there's so many salmon this year, what will
- 7:19Speaker 1: that mean going forward? For the bear population. Will we
- 7:22Speaker 1: see a spike in a few years to come.
- 7:27Speaker 7: Perhaps what we saw this summer is that they weren't
- 7:32Speaker 7: congregating at the falls as much. Huh, they didn't. They
- 7:35Speaker 7: didn't have to sit there and really work for it.
- 7:39Speaker 7: They could go anywhere in the river and just grab
- 7:42Speaker 7: a salmon whenever they wanted to, So they weren't at
- 7:47Speaker 7: the fall so much. People were going to the falls
- 7:50Speaker 7: and saying, where are the bears? They were there, Yeah,
- 7:54Speaker 7: they were there there all summer, but not in the
- 7:56Speaker 7: numbers like in years past. There have been four year
- 8:00Speaker 7: fifty of them at the fall at one time, and
- 8:05Speaker 7: this year they were less bears there. They were still
- 8:08Speaker 7: there to watch, but not in the groups that we've seen.
- 8:14Speaker 1: Well, they were spread out, right, they didn't have to Yeah, yeah.
- 8:17Speaker 7: They're spread out along the river, and there was a
- 8:20Speaker 7: greater opportunity to watch them, you know, from different places,
- 8:24Speaker 7: and you know, and they're all over the place.
- 8:28Speaker 1: I think I've seen this before. But but did they
- 8:32Speaker 1: mostly eat the skin, Matt, Yeah.
- 8:37Speaker 7: They like the skin and they like the brains. They
- 8:40Speaker 7: like the most nutritional parts or their favorite part. We
- 8:47Speaker 7: don't know for sure, but yeah, Maney of the bears
- 8:49Speaker 7: just they'll eat a portion of it and let the
- 8:54Speaker 7: rest go. There's this time of year, there's a lot
- 8:58Speaker 7: of salmon that are on the bottom of the river
- 9:01Speaker 7: are keying in on.
- 9:03Speaker 1: So the the other thing I look at is I'm
- 9:09Speaker 1: guessing the bears are just as are maybe heavier than
- 9:13Speaker 1: ever because there's so many salmon to gorge on this
- 9:16Speaker 1: this this summer.
- 9:18Speaker 7: Yeah, they're they're definitely game shape this year. They are
- 9:22Speaker 7: are looking really big and healthy and successful. Like there's
- 9:27Speaker 7: there's They're gonna have a good sleep for sure.
- 9:32Speaker 1: So there's There's the other thing I think I've seen.
- 9:36Speaker 1: There's not as much fighting and scrapping among the bears
- 9:40Speaker 1: this year because there's no need to there's so many salmon.
- 9:45Speaker 7: That's true. Yeah, there have been so many confrontations with
- 9:50Speaker 7: each other and because they're spread out more and they
- 9:56Speaker 7: don't have to group together. Relieve, bears don't do that.
- 10:01Speaker 7: They're they're individuals and they don't come together like this.
- 10:04Speaker 7: But they do group together the falls and tolerate each
- 10:08Speaker 7: other for the most part. But let's fights this here
- 10:12Speaker 7: for sure, because of because they don't have to really
- 10:17Speaker 7: work at it.
- 10:18Speaker 1: I know that there are. Some bears have been named,
- 10:22Speaker 1: but a lot of them are numbered. Where where do
- 10:25Speaker 1: the numbers come from?
- 10:26Speaker 9: That?
- 10:28Speaker 7: We give them numbers? The National Park Service gives them
- 10:32Speaker 7: numbers when they show up at Brooks Falls. A rule
- 10:37Speaker 7: is you show up three times and at Brooks Falls
- 10:44Speaker 7: on camera, and we'll give you a number. And that
- 10:51Speaker 7: that's like the Wayne Gretzky saying, if you missed one
- 10:56Speaker 7: hundred percent of the shots you don't take. That's a
- 10:59Speaker 7: lot like the bears. They got to show up on
- 11:01Speaker 7: camera here, and in order to be counted and given
- 11:05Speaker 7: a name or given a number, we give them numbers.
- 11:09Speaker 1: What what's theill? What is the average lifespan of a
- 11:12Speaker 1: brown bear?
- 11:15Speaker 7: Little over twenty years? But many like Otis have lived
- 11:19Speaker 7: to he may be still alive, but she was twenty
- 11:27Speaker 7: eight wow or so. And many bears get to live
- 11:32Speaker 7: that age. But the average is.
- 11:36Speaker 1: How at what age will female bears not be able
- 11:42Speaker 1: to have cubs anymore?
- 11:46Speaker 7: Oh, that's a good question. I don't know.
- 11:49Speaker 1: The answer to that, Okay, As I look at the
- 11:54Speaker 1: bears in this bracket, and I haven't broken down the percentage.
- 11:59Speaker 1: But you've got some female bears, you've got some male bears.
- 12:02Speaker 7: Correct, Yeah, we mix it up a lot. But you're
- 12:05Speaker 7: older and younger and male and female, and so each
- 12:10Speaker 7: person has a one they can share, somebody they can
- 12:15Speaker 7: cheer for.
- 12:16Speaker 1: Are most of these female bears right now? Are they?
- 12:19Speaker 1: Are they pregnant?
- 12:23Speaker 7: So many of them have us. Typically comes to stay
- 12:28Speaker 7: with their mother for at least two years, yes, usually three,
- 12:35Speaker 7: and then she'll chase them away, so they're with their
- 12:41Speaker 7: counts for a while, and so they're not They don't
- 12:45Speaker 7: get pregnant every year.
- 12:46Speaker 1: Sure, Okay, How would you describe the and you mentioned
- 12:52Speaker 1: this year's crop being so healthy and fat, how would
- 12:55Speaker 1: you describe the overall health of the brown bear population
- 13:00Speaker 1: in Catmi and in that area.
- 13:03Speaker 7: It's one of the healthiest and largest populations the brown
- 13:08Speaker 7: bears in the world. And it's all due to the
- 13:11Speaker 7: healthy ecosystem that we have here, the clean water, strong
- 13:15Speaker 7: standing runs, and it's one of the largest brown bear
- 13:20Speaker 7: populations left on the planet because of that run. We
- 13:24Speaker 7: estimate over two thousand bears at least literally in this park.
- 13:30Speaker 7: And park's huge. It's the size of Yellowstone in Yosemite combined.
- 13:35Speaker 5: Wow.
- 13:37Speaker 1: Well, I I was in Yellowstone this summer and brown
- 13:42Speaker 1: bear sidings are I mean, I don't want to say
- 13:44Speaker 1: they're rare. I didn't. I've seen more black bears, certainly
- 13:47Speaker 1: in Yellowstone than I have that brown bears.
- 13:51Speaker 7: Well, yeah, it's interesting. I worked there. I worked in
- 13:53Speaker 7: Yellowstone at Olt Faithful and Yellowstone Lake for eight years
- 13:57Speaker 7: and really a lot of my bear knowledge comes from
- 14:00Speaker 7: over there, I say a lot. There's a quote from
- 14:03Speaker 7: a bear scientist in the Greater Yellowstone ecosystem. His name
- 14:07Speaker 7: is Craig Summern. He said that the future of bears
- 14:14Speaker 7: will be based is based on the hearts and minds
- 14:17Speaker 7: of people that live with the bears, and that that
- 14:22Speaker 7: I talked about bears when I was in Yellowstone. And yeah,
- 14:25Speaker 7: there's you don't get much of a chance to see
- 14:31Speaker 7: the the grizzlies.
- 14:33Speaker 1: So you know, we read I just had a story
- 14:38Speaker 1: of a of a hiker surprising, it turns out a
- 14:42Speaker 1: brown bear in Yellowstone here in the last week or so,
- 14:45Speaker 1: you you hardly ever hear of confrontations in Catmi. Is
- 14:51Speaker 1: that because of the precautions that you take that are
- 14:54Speaker 1: already in place?
- 14:56Speaker 7: Uh?
- 14:56Speaker 1: Is it just because they're not as nearly as many
- 14:59Speaker 1: people pole coming through there as there are Yellowstone. What
- 15:03Speaker 1: what's the reason for that?
- 15:06Speaker 7: A lot of things, and you keep in on two
- 15:09Speaker 7: of them. Yes, we take greater precautions here. Everybody that
- 15:15Speaker 7: comes to Catmi, they'll get an orientation from us at
- 15:21Speaker 7: the or everybody that comes to Brooks Brooks Camp area
- 15:26Speaker 7: gets an orientation, safety orientation about bears, so that that
- 15:32Speaker 7: really helps our safety record. And also there's lots of
- 15:39Speaker 7: people coming here than the Yellowstone. And one other thing
- 15:42Speaker 7: about Yellowstone is it's it's people hike off trail a lot.
- 15:50Speaker 7: That's one thing you don't want to do is surprise
- 15:53Speaker 7: and barely they don't like surprises. Yes, and a lot
- 15:56Speaker 7: of people are hiking off trail on their own and
- 16:00Speaker 7: in Yellowstone, and there's lots of a chance here and
- 16:03Speaker 7: people are usually in groups. They're making a little bit
- 16:07Speaker 7: of noise, they're doing what we tell them, they're following regulations,
- 16:11Speaker 7: and there's less there seems to be less of a problem.
- 16:17Speaker 1: Well, the first time I came to Alaska was to fish,
- 16:21Speaker 1: and the guides wore bells around their neck. I mean
- 16:24Speaker 1: they had bear spray and they also carried side arms,
- 16:27Speaker 1: but they had bells around their neck to warn the bears.
- 16:31Speaker 1: You know that we're coming.
- 16:33Speaker 7: Yes, that's a good thing to do. Talk or make
- 16:36Speaker 7: some noise, stick to the trail. You don't want to
- 16:42Speaker 7: surprise a bear, do you do? You have something you
- 16:47Speaker 7: don't want to do?
- 16:48Speaker 1: Do you have favorite bears? This year?
- 16:51Speaker 7: I had a favorite. He was bounced from the competition early.
- 16:56Speaker 7: Oh no, the twelve candidates in the contest that are
- 17:01Speaker 7: contestants and the bear I picked or wanted to win,
- 17:05Speaker 7: number five O three, he was out of there in
- 17:10Speaker 7: the first round unfortunately.
- 17:12Speaker 1: Yeah, five five five o three got taken down by
- 17:16Speaker 1: nine one.
- 17:18Speaker 7: Yeah, right, oh yeah, don't remind me.
- 17:23Speaker 5: Why?
- 17:24Speaker 1: Why? Why did you like five oh three?
- 17:27Speaker 7: But I liked him because he has a strength and presence,
- 17:32Speaker 7: not so much in force, but he's very friendly and
- 17:38Speaker 7: he's a big bear, right but you know he's he's
- 17:42Speaker 7: also he finds a way to get along with other
- 17:46Speaker 7: bears for the most part. Yeah, he gets some fights.
- 17:49Speaker 7: But but it goes to a Melbowe quote, I say
- 17:53Speaker 7: a lot real strength never impairs beauty, and.
- 17:59Speaker 8: And he does.
- 18:00Speaker 7: He's really good at that. That's why I liked him.
- 18:03Speaker 7: I saw a bit of.
- 18:04Speaker 1: Myself what and I know it's just totally estimation. Uh,
- 18:11Speaker 1: what's the largest bear that you've seen so far this season?
- 18:17Speaker 7: Oh? I was able to see Chunk. He's always been He's.
- 18:23Speaker 1: Wow, Chunk, Chunk is a favorite.
- 18:27Speaker 7: Yeah, he's his favorite this year. He's gone up against
- 18:31Speaker 7: Grazier in the past two years and yep, final round. Yeah,
- 18:35Speaker 7: and some people, many people are saying that this is
- 18:37Speaker 7: his year. But when you see him, wow, he's he's
- 18:41Speaker 7: a presence.
- 18:42Speaker 1: He is.
- 18:44Speaker 7: Oh, he's definitely. You notice right away he's a big bear.
- 18:50Speaker 1: So on the website it said one of the uh
- 18:54Speaker 1: little observations of Chunk, he was observed devouring forty two
- 18:59Speaker 1: salmon in ten hours.
- 19:03Speaker 7: What is your favorite? Who? You?
- 19:05Speaker 1: I mean, I I look, I've I don't know if
- 19:10Speaker 1: I have a favorite yet because I haven't studied them
- 19:14Speaker 1: quite enough. But I know that today right now, the
- 19:19Speaker 1: voting is between one twenty eight yearling and six oh
- 19:24Speaker 1: two and nine oh one, as you mentioned, and Chunk,
- 19:28Speaker 1: So we we do expect Chunk to come out of
- 19:31Speaker 1: that side of the bracket, right.
- 19:34Speaker 7: Yeah, definitely, he's one of the favorites to win, if
- 19:39Speaker 7: not the favorite.
- 19:40Speaker 1: And how much how much of that is because as
- 19:43Speaker 1: I mentioned, I know you guys probably give names and
- 19:46Speaker 1: tough some of them are just numbers. I mean, Chunk
- 19:50Speaker 1: is a great name. That's got to catch people's attention.
- 19:54Speaker 7: Yeah, so is the Flotato that's number six oh two.
- 19:58Speaker 1: Oh I like that. Yeah, it's the first. This says
- 20:03Speaker 1: that that's the first. Uh, his first appearance ever in
- 20:07Speaker 1: Fat Bear Week.
- 20:09Speaker 7: Yeah, and uh, it's funny. I mean he really floats
- 20:13Speaker 7: in the water like that. It's so weird.
- 20:15Speaker 1: Reminds reminds visitors of Homer Simpson relaxing in a pool
- 20:20Speaker 1: when lounging.
- 20:22Speaker 7: Yeah. So there's a new thing every day there. They're
- 20:27Speaker 7: still charming.
- 20:30Speaker 1: So Chunk we've established as one of the favorites. Grazer
- 20:37Speaker 1: was a it is a past champion, right, I mean
- 20:41Speaker 1: two years ago Grazer was a champion.
- 20:45Speaker 7: Yeah. Not only does does she put on weigh every year,
- 20:50Speaker 7: but she also is very protective of her cubs. It's amazing.
- 20:55Speaker 7: She's a ragning champ and she has to protect her cubs. Well,
- 21:02Speaker 7: she's got one this year that that it used to
- 21:08Speaker 7: be two.
- 21:10Speaker 1: Yeah, I read uh. In July of last year. Last summer,
- 21:14Speaker 1: one of those cubs died after being injured by Chunk.
- 21:20Speaker 7: That's right. Yeah, so how does how.
- 21:23Speaker 1: Does that happen? Because I've seen I've seen before that
- 21:27Speaker 1: these brown bears will go after cubs.
- 21:31Speaker 7: Correct, Yeah, it's it's the males, it's the bars. They
- 21:39Speaker 7: they don't we don't know for sure, but they don't
- 21:41Speaker 7: like u competition. They and once once they are, once
- 21:50Speaker 7: they have made it for the year that they they
- 21:53Speaker 7: don't take any part in raising the young correct, not
- 21:56Speaker 7: like eagles or or other animals. Yes, the birds, they're
- 22:01Speaker 7: the four will just just leave. Yes, they're they're off
- 22:07Speaker 7: on their own. They don't take any part and and
- 22:10Speaker 7: helping the young ones, and are even a threat as
- 22:12Speaker 7: we saw with Chunk.
- 22:16Speaker 1: So we mentioned I'm thinking that when you see these,
- 22:20Speaker 1: especially these female bears, if the female bears do not
- 22:23Speaker 1: have cubs with them, and I know you you observed
- 22:26Speaker 1: them quite regularly, you probably have a good idea of
- 22:31Speaker 1: which ones are pregnant this time of year. Correct.
- 22:36Speaker 7: Yeah, One that maybe do is uh.
- 22:47Speaker 1: Nine nine oh one okay.
- 22:51Speaker 7: Or nine ten. Sorry, she's she's really big this year. Okay,
- 22:57Speaker 7: she's she didn't have coups this year, maybe next year likely.
- 23:05Speaker 1: I like the way these things are handed down. Nine
- 23:08Speaker 1: oh nine is the daughter of the twenty eighteen February
- 23:11Speaker 1: Week champion bead Nos nine to ten is the sister
- 23:15Speaker 1: of Bear nine oh nine.
- 23:18Speaker 7: That's amazing. Yeah, two princesses who were daughters of Royalty.
- 23:28Speaker 7: Twenty six is a daughter of Holly, a former champion,
- 23:32Speaker 7: and nine o nine, as he said, is you're good
- 23:35Speaker 7: with these bears, good job. Nine to nine is a
- 23:38Speaker 7: daughter of Beads.
- 23:41Speaker 1: So these are well, these are well bred bears. They
- 23:44Speaker 1: come from good stock, is what you're saying, Royalty. Yeah,
- 23:50Speaker 1: so probably that the percentage of bears that come from
- 23:58Speaker 1: past champions is pretty high that maybe one day they'll
- 24:01Speaker 1: be a champion.
- 24:03Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 24:03Speaker 7: Also a Bear ninety nine was in there. We have
- 24:10Speaker 7: four percent of our followers on Fat Bear Week or
- 24:13Speaker 7: from Canada. Okay, so I'm sure Canada has to be
- 24:17Speaker 7: disappointed when ninety nine went out.
- 24:20Speaker 1: Well, I'm told that that's not ninety nine. That was
- 24:23Speaker 1: their first appearance at Fat Bear Week, right, Yeah.
- 24:27Speaker 7: They got drummed, really got badly.
- 24:34Speaker 1: Yeah, let me see, I've got the voting here, I
- 24:38Speaker 1: thought somewhere, but I don't think I have the initial
- 24:42Speaker 1: voting for ninety nine. So apparently ninety nine went out
- 24:45Speaker 1: early in the tournament, right, yep, Okay, the way I
- 24:50Speaker 1: have it figured, there's only about five or six bears
- 24:54Speaker 1: left after today's voting. Am I right about that?
- 24:57Speaker 7: Yeah?
- 24:58Speaker 1: I have I have nine one, nine oh nine, eight
- 25:01Speaker 1: fifty six. Uh chunk is being voted on today. We
- 25:06Speaker 1: expect him to move on and then uh yearling one,
- 25:11Speaker 1: eight yearly and six oh two are being voted on today.
- 25:15Speaker 7: Yeah, you're zeno against will see the flotato.
- 25:21Speaker 1: I love that. Uh all right, well, I tell you
- 25:25Speaker 1: I really enjoy it. And uh, this is it's crazy
- 25:29Speaker 1: how this thing. I want to tell people. There's all
- 25:32Speaker 1: kinds of ways. You can go to Fatbearweek dot org, right,
- 25:36Speaker 1: and you can vote that way. The live cams are
- 25:40Speaker 1: on explore dot org and you can watch these bears
- 25:44Speaker 1: all day if you want to.
- 25:46Speaker 7: Wow, you're doing my job for me. That's great.
- 25:48Speaker 1: Did I get that right?
- 25:50Speaker 10: Yeah?
- 25:51Speaker 3: You did.
- 25:53Speaker 1: Well, I'm kind of I don't need anything else to
- 25:57Speaker 1: distract me, so I could one of those people that
- 26:01Speaker 1: could turn on explore dot orgon probably watch for about
- 26:04Speaker 1: twelve hours.
- 26:06Speaker 7: Yeah, hooked, It's amazing. That's why I love this.
- 26:12Speaker 1: Job here, Matt. I really appreciate you spending some time
- 26:17Speaker 1: with us today. How's hey, how's the weather up there today.
- 26:22Speaker 7: Little Chili? Okay, it's in the forties.
- 26:25Speaker 1: Oh that's not bad.
- 26:27Speaker 7: Yeah bad.
- 26:29Speaker 1: I bet the sun's not out today.
- 26:32Speaker 7: No, it's it's cloudy. Trees are starting to turn color.
- 26:36Speaker 1: Nice. Yeah, that was just a wild guest by me
- 26:39Speaker 1: that with the sun not being out. Hey, I appreciate
- 26:44Speaker 1: the time, Matt, Thank you so much.
- 26:47Speaker 7: Thanks for having me on here.
- 26:48Speaker 1: Okay, that's Matt Johnson cat my communications. It is fat
- 26:52Speaker 1: bear week again. If you don't vote, you can't complain
- 26:56Speaker 1: about the results. That's just you know, that's just the
- 27:01Speaker 1: way it is coming up. We have bear attacks. I mean,
- 27:09Speaker 1: you know you I can't spend thirty minutes talking about
- 27:12Speaker 1: brown bears without talking about, you know, the bear attacks
- 27:16Speaker 1: as well. So we do have some of that. You know,
- 27:21Speaker 1: we've got alligators attacking, because that's every week. And I'm
- 27:26Speaker 1: just going to give you a little hint. One of
- 27:31Speaker 1: them happened in Florida. I know you're I know you're
- 27:35Speaker 1: surprised to hear that. And the other thing is we
- 27:39Speaker 1: have a great story about an eleven year old girl
- 27:47Speaker 1: intentionally catching an alligator with her dad who has who
- 27:51Speaker 1: got two US licenses to catch two gators this year
- 27:58Speaker 1: along along the Tack coast, and his eleven year old
- 28:02Speaker 1: daughter got one of them. And I think that's going
- 28:06Speaker 1: to be a pretty cool story as well. Lucko Ranch

- 34:47Speaker 1: animals by helicopter. And when I say taking them, I
- 34:54Speaker 1: mean eliminating them. They have become prolific, and again they
- 35:03Speaker 1: are competing with the big horn sheep that they have
- 35:06Speaker 1: spent so much time and money and effort trying to restore.
- 35:16Speaker 1: So hopefully this will help a little bit. I'm sure
- 35:21Speaker 1: there'll be odd ad huggers that are out there protesting,
- 35:26Speaker 1: but that's a long way to go to protest. You
- 35:29Speaker 1: got to be committed. This is a cool story about
- 35:35Speaker 1: different markings showing up on redfish. You know, redfish are prized.
- 35:40Speaker 1: Everybody knows redfish in Texas by the spots on their tail.
- 35:44Speaker 1: Forty five year old Pincacle of Florida angler Andrew Brown
- 35:49Speaker 1: started catching redfish and eight years ago began noticing odd
- 35:53Speaker 1: spot patterns on redfish tails. He caught one that appeared
- 35:58Speaker 1: to have an uppercase a spotted a clear letter E
- 36:03Speaker 1: some fish with no spots. That's rather rare. After five years,
- 36:06Speaker 1: between his own catches and online reports, he had accounted
- 36:09Speaker 1: for the entire alphabet and the number zero through nine.
- 36:14Speaker 1: He posted the fines on the website and Instagram. Hearts
- 36:19Speaker 1: are the most common spots that appear. He says. It's
- 36:22Speaker 1: like they want us to be happy. They do want
- 36:24Speaker 1: us to be happy. Some say anglers simply seeing what
- 36:30Speaker 1: they want to see. My opinion. Ron Ratliffe said he's
- 36:35Speaker 1: caught fish with most of the letters of the alphabet
- 36:38Speaker 1: and a spot shaped like the state of Louisiana. It's
- 36:44Speaker 1: weird genetics going on, says Stephen Crowder, who operates a
- 36:47Speaker 1: charter out of Jacksonville, Florida. Bobby Warren, out of Venice, Louisiana,
- 36:55Speaker 1: said citing odd redfish spots on redfish are a subjective pursuit,
- 37:02Speaker 1: like looking up at clouds and seeing a dog and
- 37:04Speaker 1: a cat. Again, that's my opinion as well. Mike Eilik
- 37:08Speaker 1: says he caught a redfish with a tail spot resembling
- 37:11Speaker 1: Edgar Allan Poe. Now that's stretching it a little bit. God.
- 37:15Speaker 1: John Fuss in South Carolina said, they're all different, like
- 37:18Speaker 1: a fingerprint. It's like a Russhok test. What do you see?
- 37:24Speaker 1: Marine biologist Eric Latimer spent forty years studying redfish. He
- 37:28Speaker 1: likens him to freckles that run in the family. If
- 37:31Speaker 1: you look hard enough, he said, you can see anything
- 37:36Speaker 1: that you imagine. So yeah, pretty cool article the Wall
- 37:45Speaker 1: Street Journal. Though, let's see, I'm not quite ready for
- 37:49Speaker 1: that yet. I'm not quite ready for that yet. Mountain
- 37:57Speaker 1: lion attack. Let's do this. This is this is a
- 38:01Speaker 1: heads up, okay for those of you who hunt in
- 38:04Speaker 1: the mountains. For those of you heck Wu hunting Texas.
- 38:09Speaker 1: Two men hunting in southern Colorado bodies found last week
- 38:15Speaker 1: were killed by a lightning strike, according to the Caneos
- 38:19Speaker 1: County Corner's Office, which launched an extensive search for the
- 38:23Speaker 1: out of state hunters after their vehicles were found with
- 38:26Speaker 1: most of their gear inside the corner. Confirmed to a
- 38:30Speaker 1: CBS station in Colorado Springs, a preliminary report shows lightning
- 38:34Speaker 1: killed Andrew Porter from Asheville, North Carolina, in ian Stasco
- 38:38Speaker 1: from Salt Lake City. Both were twenty five years old.
- 38:42Speaker 1: The men had been elk hunting near the Rio de
- 38:45Speaker 1: los Pinos trailhead in the San Juan Wilderness went missing
- 38:49Speaker 1: September eleventh, their bodies found approximately one week later. Person
- 38:56Speaker 1: claiming to be a fiance one of the men said
- 38:58Speaker 1: in a post on social media told the victims didn't
- 39:02Speaker 1: fear or pain and died instantly. The National Lightning Safety
- 39:09Speaker 1: Council recommends people who are outside near electric storms quote
- 39:13Speaker 1: avoid summits, ridgelines, open fields and isolated trees, and stay
- 39:21Speaker 1: away from water and metal and fences. I mean, life
- 39:27Speaker 1: flat on the ground in a depression is the best
- 39:31Speaker 1: thing I can tell you. And be aware in the mountains.
- 39:37Speaker 1: You know that things like that come up rather quickly.
- 39:47Speaker 1: Let's see, I got bear attacks again. My thanks to Matt.
- 39:52Speaker 1: I hope you go online and vote for your favorite
- 39:55Speaker 1: fat bear. The finals coming up this weekend again and
- 40:00Speaker 1: if you don't vote, you can't complain, so always vote. Um.
- 40:10Speaker 1: That happens all the time. We'll get to that, we will.
- 40:13Speaker 1: This is continues to be interesting to me. A third
- 40:18Speaker 1: boat off the coast of Portugal last Saturday has been
- 40:22Speaker 1: attacked by a pot of orcas. We have talked about
- 40:24Speaker 1: this before. The Coast Guard was called into action. To
- 40:29Speaker 1: rescue four people on a sailboat and coast to Kaprika
- 40:35Speaker 1: after successive collisions with the bow caused by orcas. The
- 40:41Speaker 1: boat ten miles off the coast near to Lisbon. When
- 40:44Speaker 1: it was hit, the crew called for help they were
- 40:49Speaker 1: taken away to safety. Footage shows the moment at least
- 40:53Speaker 1: three killer whales launched an attack on the sailboat. One
- 40:58Speaker 1: of the orcas began repeatedly striking the boat, which belonged
- 41:02Speaker 1: to the Nautic Squad Club. After several blows, the vessel
- 41:04Speaker 1: could be seen tilting dangerously from side to side, slowly
- 41:10Speaker 1: submerging and sinking to the bottom. The five people on
- 41:13Speaker 1: board were rescued by nearby vessels. The boat completely sank.
- 41:19Speaker 1: A second vessel was immobilized in the same area. One
- 41:24Speaker 1: week after that, the National Maritime Authority said the boat
- 41:27Speaker 1: with five people aboard had to be towed its rudder
- 41:31Speaker 1: was broken. ORCA tracker Ruy Alvis working with the skipper
- 41:37Speaker 1: of the vessel after noticing a new pot of killer
- 41:40Speaker 1: whales had recently arrived. Mister Alvis relayed this information along
- 41:45Speaker 1: with a warning to the team to consider if it
- 41:47Speaker 1: was the right time to head out on the water.
- 41:51Speaker 1: A longtime researcher, says he was in contact with the
- 41:54Speaker 1: vessel during the altercation so he could be on hand
- 41:58Speaker 1: to help telling the newspaper. The sailors on board decided
- 42:02Speaker 1: to take the risk and ignored a key safety measures.
- 42:07Speaker 1: He said, I was involved in this situation. I was
- 42:09Speaker 1: permanently in contact with the skipper and the guys. We
- 42:13Speaker 1: had seen two days before the orcas around the area,
- 42:15Speaker 1: but the sailors were thinking they can take the risk.
- 42:19Speaker 1: They were more than sixty five feet of water. We
- 42:22Speaker 1: advised him to go less than sixty feet deep. Alvias
- 42:27Speaker 1: says the footage showed a routine orca attack routine. He
- 42:32Speaker 1: said they had a problem with the orcas when they
- 42:34Speaker 1: touched the rudder, as the first push of the rudder
- 42:38Speaker 1: was very strong. By this point, they couldn't react very
- 42:41Speaker 1: much to the situation. The strikes follow a number of
- 42:45Speaker 1: incidents we've talked about. This last week, a pot of
- 42:48Speaker 1: killer whales attacked two boats off the coast of Spain.
- 42:52Speaker 1: Crew Members who are on the water every day described
- 42:55Speaker 1: it as very scary. In July, packer killer whales struck
- 42:59Speaker 1: in the Atlanta nearly capsized a yacht. The reason behind
- 43:08Speaker 1: these near fatal encounters is often attributed to the killer
- 43:12Speaker 1: whales simply playing around, rather than any twisted attack plot.
- 43:19Speaker 1: Alvas says. Scientists will always explain that if an orca
- 43:23Speaker 1: is busy, or if they're hunting or something, they will
- 43:27Speaker 1: not care about the sailing boat. But if there's no activity,
- 43:31Speaker 1: they will see a sailing boat passing and approach it
- 43:33Speaker 1: and try to force the rudder from one side to
- 43:35Speaker 1: the other. They play with the rudder because it's a
- 43:38Speaker 1: moving part of the boat. They approach the boat to
- 43:42Speaker 1: play with the rudder, but they are heavy, sometimes six tons,
- 43:46Speaker 1: so they break it. I accept this explanation, he says,
- 43:51Speaker 1: but I always think they will never really know one
- 43:55Speaker 1: hundred percent because we can't talk to the orcis. That's wild.
- 44:00Speaker 1: Absolutely are crazy. Get them before they get you people.

- 47:00Speaker 1: Welcome back. It is the Clark Eisenhower Outdoor addition for
- 47:05Speaker 1: a Thursday afternoon. Got NFL football coming up here on
- 47:09Speaker 1: the zone if you care anything about that, which I
- 47:11Speaker 1: do not. A little girl nabbed a massive alligator while
- 47:17Speaker 1: hunting with family members in Rye, Texas, is seventy miles
- 47:21Speaker 1: northeast of Houston. Eleven year old Jocelyn Roberts was hunting
- 47:24Speaker 1: on a private ranch owned by a family friend. Her dad,
- 47:28Speaker 1: Trey Roberts, allotted two hunting tags for alligator season, so
- 47:31Speaker 1: he decided to take Jocelyn along with her fifteen year
- 47:34Speaker 1: old brother and two younger brothers. The family shares the
- 47:37Speaker 1: same ritual whenever they hunt and fish together. We make
- 47:39Speaker 1: a quick short prayer always on prank for safety, praying
- 47:43Speaker 1: for a cool opportunity and adventure, says Trey. First five
- 47:46Speaker 1: days hunting, they didn't have any luck. Then, while scouting
- 47:49Speaker 1: the area near a lake that connects to the Trinity,
- 47:51Speaker 1: they spotted large drag marks in the mud that led
- 47:55Speaker 1: to the water. It was clear big gator in the area.
- 47:58Speaker 1: They baited their lines with raw chick on a large
- 48:01Speaker 1: fishing hook, and it wasn't long before their prayer was answered.
- 48:04Speaker 1: Joscelyn snared an eight and a half foot gaiter estimated
- 48:08Speaker 1: to be three hundred and fifty pounds, and shot it
- 48:12Speaker 1: right between the eyes. Joscelyn telling KU Channel eleven, I
- 48:16Speaker 1: was excited because I've never shot a gater in my life,
- 48:19Speaker 1: and it was really big. I got scared because how
- 48:22Speaker 1: big it was for a second, but I wasn't that scared.
- 48:25Speaker 1: Her older brother took over as the angry reptile thrashed around.
- 48:29Speaker 1: I thought it was going to be a little smaller
- 48:31Speaker 1: than that, and then we started pulling it and the
- 48:33Speaker 1: tree started yanking and almost yanked it out of the ground.
- 48:36Speaker 1: Trey said, I had twin nine year olds with me.
- 48:38Speaker 1: They were yelling in the background with excitement. The whole
- 48:42Speaker 1: family enjoying the attention as far as her doing it,
- 48:45Speaker 1: I'm stoked. I'm appreciative that is being amped up a
- 48:48Speaker 1: little bit and making it a better experience for her,
- 48:50Speaker 1: said Trey. The meat from the alligator will feed the
- 48:53Speaker 1: family for a while. We're appreciative of having a couple
- 48:57Speaker 1: of good meals out of it. It's her favorite meal.
- 49:00Speaker 1: The hide will be used to create leather goods. Trey
- 49:04Speaker 1: caught another gator last season, but not as big as
- 49:07Speaker 1: the one Joshlyn caught. That is awesome, says she can't
- 49:13Speaker 1: wait to go deer hunting. This is a girl and
- 49:15Speaker 1: a family that's being raised right in my America. Let's
- 49:24Speaker 1: see Florida woman taking her dog for a walk. How
- 49:27Speaker 1: many stories start like this? If I tell you Florida,
- 49:32Speaker 1: what do you think's gonna happen? You know what's gonna happen.
- 49:35Speaker 1: Florida woman taking her dog for a walk near a
- 49:37Speaker 1: creek ended up punching an alligator in the face to
- 49:40Speaker 1: rescue the dog from the gator's jaws. Landa Lake's resident
- 49:44Speaker 1: Danny Rait said she and her four month old Shitsu
- 49:48Speaker 1: Dacks were walking. That's just barely a snack for alligator
- 49:53Speaker 1: walking along a creek behind her house when the five
- 49:56Speaker 1: foot gator struck. I turned and looked in. The gator
- 50:00Speaker 1: had him. The alligator's front teeth were through the collar
- 50:03Speaker 1: of my dog. The alligator started dragging Dacks into the water.
- 50:07Speaker 1: She said. I punched him and punched and punched. I
- 50:10Speaker 1: punched him in the eye enough that he let go.
- 50:12Speaker 1: He unclamped a little, and I pulled off, but his
- 50:16Speaker 1: teeth dragged down My arm. Right was able to flip
- 50:18Speaker 1: the gator on its back. I like that. She's got spunk,
- 50:22Speaker 1: as Lou told Mary, I hate spunk. Some of you
- 50:27Speaker 1: will get that, allowing her and Dacks to flee the house.
- 50:30Speaker 1: To the house, she recorded video of the gator lurking
- 50:33Speaker 1: behind the home. The gator was removed from the property
- 50:37Speaker 1: by trappers. Look why do you remove the gator? Shoot it?
- 50:41Speaker 1: Scheot it. Right urged other pet owners to be cautious
- 50:45Speaker 1: in areas where gators can camouflage. Just be careful with
- 50:49Speaker 1: your dogs. I mean fifteen feet he came out to
- 50:53Speaker 1: get him, and I didn't see him. Look, lady, you
- 50:55Speaker 1: live in Florida. Quit walking your dog by a lake.
- 51:00Speaker 1: I don't know what else to tell you. It's all
- 51:01Speaker 1: your fault. Because you're stupid, and people in Florida start
- 51:07Speaker 1: demanding they kill more gators down there. There's too many.
- 51:10Speaker 1: I'm just telling you how many gators. How about a
- 51:14Speaker 1: four foot alligator swimming through the marina in Washington, d C.
- 51:21Speaker 1: Phoenix Norwood said, at first I heard about it, then
- 51:24Speaker 1: I started looking for it, and then I saw it twice.
- 51:27Speaker 1: Twenty three year old resident there in the area thought
- 51:29Speaker 1: the gator was a fake. Then it started swimming. He
- 51:34Speaker 1: grabbed a dip net. I do not condone this, people.
- 51:40Speaker 1: I don't condone you taking a dip net to catch
- 51:44Speaker 1: a four foot alligator. If I just let it on
- 51:46Speaker 1: its own, it would have probably swam away, and authorities
- 51:49Speaker 1: were like ten fifteen minutes away. I had to get it.
- 51:53Speaker 1: I probably should have had shoes on the Oh good gosh.
- 51:57Speaker 1: This Phoenix Norwood sounds like he'd be a perfect fit
- 52:00Speaker 1: Louisiana or Florida. Norwood is a reptile enthusiast and avid
- 52:06Speaker 1: fossil collector. I got me from crocodile tea. I don't
- 52:09Speaker 1: know if this is what he sounds like. I'm just
- 52:11Speaker 1: doing in presion. I got me some crocodile teeth and
- 52:13Speaker 1: all that stuff, But I don't really have experience with
- 52:16Speaker 1: life gaiters. There's definitely first for me. Norwood held the
- 52:21Speaker 1: reptile until officials with DC Animal Control arrived. Now, this
- 52:26Speaker 1: being Washington d C. It says they will work with
- 52:28Speaker 1: a group to relocate the animal to a more appropriate environment.
- 52:33Speaker 1: How about right outside the nation's capital. No, I'm just kidding,
- 52:38Speaker 1: just kidding, gators in Washington, d C. Oh, my, uh,
- 52:45Speaker 1: tiger king associate. It's been a while since we've talked
- 52:50Speaker 1: about Joe Exotic, isn't it. A tiger handler associate of
- 52:54Speaker 1: Joe Exotic fatally mauled by a big cat under his
- 52:59Speaker 1: care at an oklahre home of preserve over the weekend.
- 53:02Speaker 1: Ryan Easley died after a tiger attacked him during quote
- 53:05Speaker 1: an accident Saturday at Growler Pines Tiger Preserve in Hugo, Oklahoma.
- 53:11Speaker 1: The tragedy is a painful reminder of both the beauty
- 53:15Speaker 1: and unpredictability of the natural world. Ryan understood those risks
- 53:21Speaker 1: not out of recklessness, but out of love, said the
- 53:24Speaker 1: press release. The animals under his care were just not
- 53:28Speaker 1: animals to him, but beings. He formed a connection with
- 53:31Speaker 1: one rooted in respect, daily care, and love. Apparently not.
- 53:35Speaker 1: Apparently there wasn't a lot of respect and daily love.
- 53:39Speaker 1: Easley's colleagues remembered him as a passionate advocate for wildlife conservation.
- 53:45Speaker 1: He loved animals, especially big cats. Easily acquired some of
- 53:50Speaker 1: those tigers from the Tiger King when Joe Exotic was
- 53:54Speaker 1: put in prison. Of course, Peter doesn't like that. They
- 53:58Speaker 1: called for the wild animal exhibitors to get out of
- 54:02Speaker 1: the business and send the animals to accredited sanctuaries. Joe Exotic,
- 54:08Speaker 1: of course didn't like Peta get involved associated press as
- 54:13Speaker 1: Easily was already dead when deputies arrived on the scene.
- 54:17Speaker 1: The tiger unexpectedly bit and shook him while they were
- 54:21Speaker 1: both in the cage, and unfortunately his wife and daughter
- 54:26Speaker 1: were there. Peta of course reached their statement and talking
- 54:33Speaker 1: about easily hauling them around the country. Joe Exotic calls
- 54:37Speaker 1: it bull bleep. I cleaned that up just a little bit.
- 54:42Speaker 1: Of course, he had to comment from prison. But it's
- 54:47Speaker 1: been a while since we had a Joe Exotic story.
- 54:52Speaker 1: Let's see. A solo hiker suffered significant injuries after being
- 54:57Speaker 1: mauled by a bear in Yellowstone National Park, causing officials
- 55:01Speaker 1: to shut down the trail where he was. Twenty nine
- 55:04Speaker 1: year old man had quote a surprise encounter while hiking
- 55:08Speaker 1: alone near Turbid Lake. The man had bear spray, but
- 55:12Speaker 1: the bear still attacked him, causing significant but non life
- 55:16Speaker 1: threatening injuries to his chest and left arm. National Park
- 55:20Speaker 1: Service transported the hiker in an ambulance to a local
- 55:23Speaker 1: clinic airlifted to a nearby hospital. Because this incident was
- 55:28Speaker 1: a defensive reaction by the bear during a surprise encounter,
- 55:31Speaker 1: the park will not be taking any management action against
- 55:35Speaker 1: the bear. The hiker thought it was a black bear,
- 55:38Speaker 1: but authorities say it behaved like a grizzly based on
- 55:42Speaker 1: size and behavior. Turbid Lake Trail has been closed until
- 55:48Speaker 1: further notice. His bear management staff sweeped the area. The
- 55:52Speaker 1: incident the first involving a bear injuring anyone in Yellowstone
- 55:56Speaker 1: since twenty twenty one. At that time, Karl Mock, not
- 56:01Speaker 1: the oiler Center, suffered a massive stroke and died two
- 56:05Speaker 1: days after a bear mauled him while he was fishing
- 56:09Speaker 1: near the Baker's Whole campground at Yellowstone. There have been
- 56:13Speaker 1: other bear incidents, of course, over the years. Twenty twenty three,
- 56:17Speaker 1: Amy Adamson mauled by a grizz just west of Yellowstone.
- 56:22Speaker 1: Officials that confirmed she had encountered the grizz based on
- 56:26Speaker 1: the tracks the animal left in the area where her
- 56:28Speaker 1: body was found. The latest attack remains under investigation. So
- 56:37Speaker 1: I'm just saying, let's be careful out there people, Let's
- 56:42Speaker 1: get them before they get you. Please. No pictures with bison, elk, moose, bear, lions, deer, badgers,
- 56:59Speaker 1: then badgers, me, hippos kpe, buffalo's water, buffalo's stay away.
- 57:07Speaker 1: That's my lesson. That's my lesson for all of us today.
