- Three children. A teacher. Dead in an elementary school. This is The Gospel Briefing. I'm Charles King. When evil breaks into the places we thought were safe, where does a Christian actually put his feet? Here is what we know. Yesterday afternoon in Bend, Oregon, a sixteen-year-old boy shot his way into Silver Rail Elementary School. Police say he fired on a parked car in the lot first. Then he turned to the building and shot the locks until they gave. Three children were killed. Ages five, eight, and eleven. A fifty-four-year-old teacher and a seven-year-old were taken to the hospital in critical condition. Here is the detail that will stay with me. A community member ran into that building after the shooter. He pursued him. He engaged him. He killed him. Police arrived three minutes later. The governor called him a hero. He is. He is also a man carrying something no one should have to carry. Roughly four hundred fifty children attend that school. Many hid in classrooms and texted parents from Apple watches as the shooting unfolded. Scripture does not flinch from a day like this. Psalm thirty-four, verse eighteen: "The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit." That is not a verse for mugs. That is a verse for a mother in Bend who will not sleep tonight. If you want to sit with the whole psalm this morning, open Bible Copilot and read it slowly. To Washington. President Trump reversed course yesterday on a plan that had drawn bipartisan alarm. The December execution of Fort Hood shooter Nidal Hasan will not be livestreamed. The president posted that streaming it "might have been a strong deterrent," but said "many very good and well-meaning people would rather not watch him die." Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth had announced the livestream last week. Vice President J.D. Vance said he would not watch. A growing number of Republicans said the same. Christians hold a range of views on the death penalty. Scripture is not silent, but it is sober. Proverbs fourteen says righteousness exalts a nation. Public spectacle of a man's death is not righteousness. The reversal is the right call. Pray today for the families of the thirteen soldiers Hasan killed. Third story. The Department of Justice sued California yesterday after handing state officials a USB drive — with a handwritten password — and demanding they cross-check twenty thousand names against federal data within forty-eight hours. The DOJ says those names are "likely" noncitizens who were mailed ballots. Los Angeles County says it will not open the drive, calling it insecure. California law prohibits voter cancellations this close to an election. Here is context. When federal officials gave Nevada a similar list of sixteen thousand names, the number shrank under review to one hundred eighty-five. Nevada checked them. Every single one was a United States citizen. Election integrity matters. So does accuracy. Christians should want both. Pray for wisdom today before you repeat what you have heard. This episode is presented by Bible Copilot. Today's verse comes from Psalm thirty-four. Open Bible Copilot and study the Verse of the Day first. It will walk you through what the passage says, what it means, what it teaches about God, and how to live it today. Three questions each day are free. Start at mybiblecopilot dot com slash gospel. "The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit." Bend is brokenhearted this morning. The Lord is near. Not distant. Near. Thanks for listening to The Gospel Briefing. Carry that into your Friday. We'll see you Monday.
