- 0:07The Boston Red Sox faced the Washington Senators at D.C. Stadium for opening day on Monday, April 12, 1965.
- 0:14Boston was a below average team, having finished no better than sixth place in the previous five seasons.
- 0:20They entered the 1965 season under new manager Billy Herman, who had taken over for the final two games of 1964 after the firing of Johnny Pesky.
- 0:29The Senators were one of the worst teams in the American League, having lost 100 or more games in each of their first four seasons as an expansion franchise.
- 0:37They were managed by Gil Hodges, who took over the club midway through the 1963 season.
- 0:42This audio recording is from the Boston Radio broadcast featuring announcers Kurt Gowdy, Mel Parnell, and Ned Martin.
- 0:49It's Red Sox baseball, brought to you by the Brewers of Maragash and Lager Beer, the beer with that famous straight from the barrel case, by the Atlantic Refining Company and your local Atlantic dealer, and your host for the opening inning, White Owl Cigars.
- 1:06The cigars made the costly way, with tobacco's aged in wood for mildness and flavor, and Tiparello by Robert Burns, the modern smoke found in all the right places with all the right people.
- 1:21Play ball with the Boston Red Sox. Good afternoon everybody, welcome to baseball 1965. A beautiful day here in the nation's capital, temperature in the 70s, a bright sun beaming down, the President of the United States has just officially opened the baseball season by throwing out not one baseball, but two.
- 1:42And the Red Sox lost in the catching of opening day baseball because Steve Rydzik caught the first one, tossed out by President Johnson, and Mike Brumley the second.
- 1:53So the President is now in the presidential box, and a poor, yucky Indian boy from just outside Mesa, Arizona, Phil Ortega, is warming up for the Washington Senators, and a lad of French-Canadian descent, Bill Mamboquette, is warming up for the Boston Red Sox.
- 2:13New manager Billy Herman is down at home plate, along with returning manager Gil Hodges to change the lineup, go over the ground rules, and get the season underway.
- 2:23The Red Sox will have in their lineup today a rookie Rico Petrichelli. He'll be the only rookie in. There are other changes though.
- 2:33Lennie Green is a newcomer in the lineup. Lee Thomas will be playing a new position. Outside of that, it's about the same. The Senators have rather a new-look team with Vic Frank Howard.
- 2:43They have Ken McMullen from the Dodgers and Phil Ortega also the Dodgers, and they're hoping for better things as are the Red Sox.
- 2:52And as we get this 1965 baseball season underway, very happy for me to introduce the newest member of the Boston Red Sox broadcasting team,
- 3:06a fellow who gave us a great thrill right here in this ballpark back in 1952 when he pitched a three-hit shutout before President Truman.
- 3:14I think you've been listening to us enough on the air over many years, time after time we lamented if we could only get another left-hander like Mal Pharr now.
- 3:25We've got him back again. Now instead of a great pitcher, he's a broadcaster. Now let me warmly welcome you to the Red Sox broadcasting crew.
- 3:34Thank you, Kurt. It's been a pleasure being with you and Ned Martin. Looking forward to a great season. I'm sure it'll be quite interesting.
- 3:42It's been a great new phase of baseball for me, the one that I've enjoyed so far this spring.
- 3:47Seeing this opening day crowd brings back memories of 1952 when I pitched against the Washington Senators in the old Griffith Stadium.
- 3:56At that time, President Truman threw out the first ball, and at that time Truman had a 3-0 record,
- 4:03and we did beat the Washington ball club on that day, breaking President Truman's record also.
- 4:09So it brings back fond memories for me, and it's certainly a great day for baseball today.
- 4:15Both ball clubs are loosening up and going through their preliminary throwing to tough ballgames.
- 4:21All right, Mal, and we wish you a lot of luck, and if you're just half as good as broadcasters you were a pitcher, you're going to be a smash hit.
- 4:29Back with us again is Ned Martin. Ned's going to give you the starting lineups in just a moment.
- 4:34Let me say, ladies and gentlemen, we always open the season with anticipation, with a great deal of happiness, but this year was sadness.
- 4:43Our companion of five years, a dedicated broadcaster, a gentleman, a loyal friend, Art Gleason is not here,
- 4:51and this is a sad opening for us that Art is not with us.
- 4:55He died last November, and we are dedicating from our broadcast booth this 1965 series of broadcasts to the late Art Gleason,
- 5:04one of the finest men I have ever known, not only in sports broadcasting, but in any field of life.
- 5:10And now here's Ned Martin for the starting lineup.
- 5:13Thank you, Curt, and good afternoon, everybody.
- 5:17Well, it is a new look Senator Bosselob had on the field that we saw in practice, and several parts of the Red Sox of 1965 are new looks.
- 5:26A lot of the faces are the same, but in different positions.
- 5:29Here's the starting lineup before this opening day crowd as the Senators take the field.
- 5:34Red Sox have Petracelli at shortstop leading off.
- 5:38Lenny Green in center field, batting number two.
- 5:41Kyle Yastremski in left, hitting third.
- 5:44Donnie Conigliaro in right field, batting number four.
- 5:47Lee Thomas at first base, batting number five.
- 5:50Felix Mantia at second base, hitting sixth.
- 5:54Frank Malzone at third base, batting seventh.
- 5:57Bob Tillman, the catcher, hitting eighth.
- 5:59And Bill Mambo Ketch, the pitcher, batting ninth.
- 6:02Mambo with a fine spring and a fine second half of the year last year,
- 6:06particularly against these Washington Senators who shut them out three times.
- 6:10For the Senators, Don Blasengame is the second baseman leading off.
- 6:14Ken McMullen over from the Dodgers is at third base, batting number two.
- 6:18Bob Chance at first base, hitting third.
- 6:21Frank Howard in left field is in the cleanup spot.
- 6:25Don Locke, the center fielder, batting number five.
- 6:28And Locke was one of their best hitters this spring.
- 6:31Willie Kirkland, veteran right fielder, batting number six.
- 6:34Mike Brumley, the catcher, hitting seventh.
- 6:37And the sharp-fielding Eddie Brinkman at shortstop, batting eighth.
- 6:40And Phil Ortega is doing the pitching.
- 6:43Ortega had a tremendous spring after coming over from the Dodgers,
- 6:47finished up with an earned run average this spring of about 1.96.
- 6:51And he gets the starting knot from manager Gil Hodges of the Senators,
- 6:55a right-hander with plenty on the ball out from around the Mesa-Stochdale area.
- 7:00The umpires for this opener, behind the plate Joe Paparella at first base, Ed Hurley,
- 7:06at second base, Frank Umont, and at third base, Bob Stewart.
- 7:11So here it goes, 1965.
- 7:14Is it going to be a long, hot summer for either of these teams or both?
- 7:17We don't know.
- 7:19It's only ours to tell you about it and wait and see.
- 7:22Rico Petracelli leading off for the Red Sox and here for the play-by-play third doubters.
- 7:28All right, Ned, 21-year-old Rico Petracelli from Brooklyn, New York, standing in.
- 7:32He's turned himself into a switch hitter.
- 7:35He's playing left against a right-hander Ortega, who's primarily a fastball pitcher.
- 7:40They're playing Petracelli to the opposite field and the first pitch of the season is outside for ball one.
- 7:45Lenny Green is crouched on deck and in the hole is Carl Yastremski.
- 7:49Petracelli stands deep in the box, slight crouch, takes a strike call, looks like a slider and accounts one and one.
- 7:59The one on the grass is McMullen, the third baseman, and chance is in tight at first in case of a bite.
- 8:06A one-one pitch to Petracelli, he takes it high and outside, ball two.
- 8:11Petracelli has no doubt about his fielding abilities.
- 8:15And Billy Herman, in trying to tighten up the club defensively, is giving him a shot at short.
- 8:19There is a doubt about his bat and the kids will have to prove that.
- 8:23The pitch is swung on and fouled back, but he is a marvelous fielder with great range, good power hands, and a strong arm.
- 8:31And if he can hit even a little, he could be a coming major league star.
- 8:37Two and two, the count's to Rico Petracelli.
- 8:39The wind today is blowing crocs from third to first.
- 8:43A bright sun out, a stadium packed here, a beautiful sight on opening day.
- 8:49All right, Ortega gets you a sign from Mike Brumley.
- 8:51Here's your stretch in the pitch.
- 8:53It is swung on and fouled out of play.
- 8:57So we have the count still two and two.
- 9:00Over there in President Johnson's box we see Joe Cronin, the president of the American League, and Mike Higgins,
- 9:07vice president with the Red Sox sitting over there.
- 9:09Mike Higgins is an old friend of Lyndon Johnson, some Texas.
- 9:12Brings up a famous story I'll have to tell you about later, about Johnny Orlando.
- 9:17Here's the wind up in the pitch.
- 9:19It is a foul.
- 9:21No, he struck him out.
- 9:23Struck him out.
- 9:25Looked like a foul tipped.
- 9:26Petracelli swung him in.
- 9:27Brumley dropped the ball, then tagged in.
- 9:30So Ortega strikes out the first batter he faces of the season.
- 9:33And it is Lenny Greenup now who had a fine spring training with the Red Sox.
- 9:39He went in with the Red Sox on a minor league roster.
- 9:42Rochester on a look-see basis and was so impressed that the Red Sox signed him.
- 9:47Green had been with Minnesota and the Angels.
- 9:49He was a regular two years ago.
- 9:51Left hander batter takes high, ball won.
- 9:54Then along came Jimmy Hall, hard-hitting young outfielder.
- 9:57They put him in center field, Green on the bench.
- 9:59And to get on that bench sometimes, your timing goes.
- 10:03Green still thinks he's a major league ball player.
- 10:05He pops it up.
- 10:06It's out in the shallow left.
- 10:07Backing up is Blinken in the shortstop.
- 10:09He's under it and Blinken grabs it for out number two.
- 10:15Ortega has quickly disposed of the first two batters, two up, two down.
- 10:20Carl Yastrowski up.
- 10:22Carl will be batting left against the right-hander.
- 10:33They outfield playing Yastrowski straight away.
- 10:37Three-eighty-nine hitter last year after winning the American League batting title the year before.
- 10:42A slow ball is high for ball one.
- 10:44But they can make sure they're more than I thought, Mel.
- 10:47That's the last pitch of the slow curve.
- 10:49He relies mainly on the fast ball.
- 10:51And the fast ball does sink a little, which can make him very effective.
- 10:55Here's a 1-0 pitch.
- 10:57There's a swing and a foul ball going out of play.
- 11:00One ball, one strike.
- 11:01The swinging weight on him, Mel, he must be quick.
- 11:03All three left-hand hitters have been late.
- 11:06Huckaselli was late.
- 11:07Green was late.
- 11:08And now Carl has fouled one back of the third base.
- 11:11Coaching box.
- 11:12And of course he is a little quick.
- 11:14He's making a little stuff on the left-hand hitters.
- 11:16One-one delivery is a slow ball tapped out to short.
- 11:19Change of pace pitch.
- 11:20Lasting game over to Chance at first.
- 11:22And Ortega breezes through the first inning.
- 11:25Throw to Red Sox.
- 11:26That three-up, three-down.
- 11:28And it'll be into the first half inning.
- 11:29The score is the Red Sox nothing with the seveners coming to bat.
- 11:34At an evening, after eating, picture taking, coffee breaking, things go right when you light a white light.
- 11:49Barbecuing or throwing, double dating, celebrating, things go right when you light a white light.
- 12:16While you're hooting or commuting, you're acting your unsaid as the world spreads things go right when you light a white light.
- 12:41Bill Mambo gets out of the mound throwing in his warm-up pitches.
- 12:44Washington will send up in the last of the first inning.
- 12:47Lasting game, McMullen and Bob Chance.
- 12:51In the President's box, Vice President Hubert Humphrey.
- 12:55Representative John McCormick of Massachusetts, the Speaker of the House.
- 13:00Representative Gerald Ford of Michigan, the House Minority Leader.
- 13:04Senator Mike Mansfield, the Senate Majority Leader.
- 13:07Senator Everett Dirksen with his curly gray hair flying in the wind.
- 13:14The Senate Majority Leader, Senator Wayne Morris of Oregon.
- 13:19George Smathers of Florida, representing Wilbert Mills of Arkansas.
- 13:24Down blasting game, swings in the first pitch and pops it up.
- 13:27It's down the foul line, backpedaling is Thomas, tough chant.
- 13:31And he one hands it beautifully, going away from home plate.
- 13:35That wind kept carrying the ball back and the big crowd here in Washington gives him a hand.
- 13:40So it doesn't take long for us to have the first feeling, Jim, of the 1965 season.
- 13:46That was a tough play for Lee Thomas.
- 13:48That ball kept drifting with the wind and Lee had to go a long way to make a one-handed catch,
- 13:53stretching as far as he possibly could.
- 13:56It was a great play on Lee's part.
- 14:01Well, he must be thrilled with that one and not his new position he's played there before.
- 14:06Well, the Angels, but the Red Sox is now at first base.
- 14:09Ken McMullen is up.
- 14:11McMullen, a right-handed batter, takes the first pitch, high ball one.
- 14:15Well, if Mambo Kett pitches half as good against the Senators today as he did last year, it could be rough.
- 14:20He has a string of 36 shutout innings against the Senators coming into today's game.
- 14:25They knocked him out in the game last May 10th.
- 14:28They knocked him out again on May 27th last year.
- 14:32And then he started pitching shutouts against Washington.
- 14:35The slider is over there for a strike call.
- 14:37He blanked the Senators seven and nothing on four hits in July 13th.
- 14:41Blanked them on six hits July 17th last year.
- 14:45Blanked them in September 22nd and again on October 3rd.
- 14:49Last time, 12 and 7 against Washington.
- 14:52Inside fastball.
- 14:55Two balls and a strike to Ken McMullen who comes over from the Dodgers.
- 14:59In fact, they're kidding and calling the Senators now the Dodger Farm Club.
- 15:03Gil Hodge is the next Dodger.
- 15:05Don Zimmer, McMullen, Frank Howard, Phil Ortega.
- 15:11Two balls, one strike.
- 15:15One out, nobody out, and no score here in Washington.
- 15:17He swings at a high pitch and fouls it upstairs.
- 15:19The count is two and two.
- 15:23The Red Sox have Jastremsky on the left.
- 15:25Lenny Green in center, Tony Conigliaro on the right.
- 15:29Now zones at third, Petrocelli is at short, Mantee is at second, Thomas is first.
- 15:34Mamboquette pitching, Kilman catching.
- 15:37This is a thick opening game assignment for Bill Mamboquette.
- 15:42Two-two to count.
- 15:45Pitch on the way to McMullen.
- 15:47Swings and he gets a foul.
- 15:48That will be in the seats and back of first base.
- 15:50Ray Thomas racing over there but can't get to it.
- 15:57McMullen last year where the Dodgers hit 209 and hit 234 with the Spokane ball club.
- 16:04Five opening assignments for Smell Pornel.
- 16:07It's quite an honor to get that opening day assignment.
- 16:10Yes it is.
- 16:11It's quite a thrill to be able to pitch also in front of the President and the Vice President of the United States.
- 16:17It's a thrill to all pitchers.
- 16:19It's one that brings many chills before the ball game.
- 16:23I don't care how long you're around this game, Mallory, any of these sports, you're not nervous there's something wrong with you.
- 16:29Strike three call, a slider, knee-high corner on the outside corner, two downs, and Bob Chan's coming up.
- 16:37Well the Sounders made some tricks.
- 16:39This is a player involved in one of them.
- 16:42They sent Chuck Gittin to the Cleveland Indians for Bob Chan and Woody Hale.
- 16:47This is a left-handed batter.
- 16:49As a rookie last year we thought he was one of the best hitters in the league.
- 16:52He hit 279, knocked in 75 runs, and had 14 homers.
- 16:56He's got power.
- 16:57In fact there's some real power in this Washington ball club.
- 17:00Chan, Howard, Don Locke, Kirkland, Jim King, they've got a lot of power.
- 17:06Two downs, nobody on.
- 17:08Mambo overhands a pitch and it crowds the left-hander.
- 17:11Ball one.
- 17:12Playing in straight away.
- 17:17Bob Chan lives now in Jersey City, New Jersey, is born in Statesboro, Georgia.
- 17:23And he's still a youngster, he's only 24 years old.
- 17:27A 1-0 pitch to him, there's a let-up outside, ball two.
- 17:30Doing nothing.
- 17:32Of course one of the hallmarks of Mambo catch pitching is control.
- 17:37He'll usually walk if he's right, only one or two men a game.
- 17:41Last year he had a disappointing season.
- 17:43After winning 20 the year before, he came back to win 13 last year and he was 14.
- 17:48A 2-0 delivery, wing and a miss on a shoulder-high fastball, two and one.
- 17:53Mambo just couldn't get straightened out.
- 17:55He had a terrible start.
- 17:56And then the last six weeks of the season he started a pitch.
- 18:00A Mambo-kid of the year before.
- 18:02I really hope he picks up where he left off last year.
- 18:07Two balls and a strike to Bob Chan.
- 18:09Nobody on, no score, last of the first inning.
- 18:15The right-hander strives and comes in.
- 18:17There's a line shot in the left center.
- 18:19There's a first-base hit of the season.
- 18:22Lenny Green runs in, picks it up, Chan makes the turn and holds it first.
- 18:26So Chan is on with two outs.
- 18:30And Frank Howard is coming up.
- 18:38Here is, probably along with Dick Raddus, one of the two monstrous men of the Major League.
- 18:46Frank Howard weighs 255 pounds, stands 6'7".
- 18:52He was a basketball star at Ohio State.
- 18:54He got a $105,000 bonus from the Dodgers a few years ago to sign.
- 18:59He lashed it down to Malzano at 30, digs it up, throws it to second, in time, four stops.
- 19:05And the Senators are out. That ball hit hard on one hop down to Malzano.
- 19:10Going to the last of the first, Washington had no runs, one hit, there were no errors, and one man left.
- 19:15At the end of the first inning, the score is the Red Sox nothing and the Senators nothing.
- 19:21At an evening, after eating, picture taking, coffee breaking, things go right when you lie about Ohio.
- 19:36Barbecuing, or caring, double dating, celebrating, things go right when you lie about Ohio.
- 19:50There's a white owl to fit every man's taste and face.
- 19:54And remember, you don't have to inhale to enjoy.
- 19:58White owl, great blend, great taste, great choice of shapes.
- 20:03Quieting, or commuting, in your arms, as the world spreads, things go right when you lie about Ohio.
- 20:21That Sox are coming up now in the second inning with Tony Canigliaro, Lee Thomas, and Felix Mantia, facing Phil Ortega.
- 20:38And other openers today, and there are a lot of new things in baseball.
- 20:41Usually Monday is left for the presidential opener here in Washington and Cincinnati's opener, but we're having other openers this year on the same day.
- 20:52New York plays in Minnesota today.
- 21:00Detroit to Kansas City, Cleveland and Los Angeles. Chicago and Baltimore will open tomorrow.
- 21:05There's a long foul down the left field line by Canigliaro out of play, strike one.
- 21:10Well, all I can say about this boy is he plays somewhat up to what he did in spring training for the year he should have.
- 21:19Tony Canigliaro. I got a kick out of him. I'll talk about it here in a minute.
- 21:25Here's a pitch to Canigliaro. Take it outside.
- 21:28I was reading, the U.P.I. had a poll of leading sports experts around America about baseball.
- 21:37They thought it was a national sport. They won one delivery to him inside because also had many young stars.
- 21:44They said list the young stars, list some of the best players.
- 21:47Twenty-five players mentioned. They didn't even mention this kid, Canigliaro.
- 21:51Talk about young star. I think this kid's got a chance to be one of the greats.
- 21:56Two-one delivery to him outside ball three.
- 22:00I think Ron Santo paid young Tony a great compliment when he said he was the best aggressive young hitter he's ever seen since he's been in baseball.
- 22:09That's quite a compliment. I'll say it is.
- 22:11A three-one pitch to Canigliaro. There's a line shot in the left base hit for him.
- 22:16Well, Tony is on with a line drive to the left.
- 22:20He had three-sixty-eight in spring training, led the club in homers, RBI's, everything.
- 22:25He doesn't get hurt. Now that's the thing we want to watch. He got hit twice, broken arm blast here.
- 22:33But I think we'll all watch and see a blossoming of a great star in this league.
- 22:40Lee Thomas is up now.
- 22:42Notting left-handed.
- 22:45The pitch to Lee is outside a ball one-and-nothing.
- 22:50That's not, I think you could say, Canigliaro and Oliva have a chance to take over in the next year or two as the two great stars in this league.
- 22:59Not that man, there he goes. Pitch is a strike. Here's a throw. It's wide. He's safe. Canigliaro steals second.
- 23:08Wide throw by Brumley to Brinkman, but Tony had a great jump on Ortega.
- 23:15He's on second base with a count one-and-one to Lee Thomas.
- 23:22Outfield playing Thomas straight away.
- 23:25No score, second inning. Ortega overhands a pitch that's outside ball two. Two-and-one.
- 23:36Thomas first came over to the Red Sox in that trade with the Angels last year.
- 23:40He sent Luke Clinton to Los Angeles, played right field, had some troubles out there.
- 23:45The two-one pitch. A ground ball hit down to first. Canigliaro is holding a second.
- 23:50Chance throw to Ortega covering, and there's one out.
- 23:58Ball hit on the ground to the right side, and Canigliaro held a second.
- 24:05Felix Mantia is up now, but his very surprising 30 home runs last year,
- 24:16and everybody's wondering if he can match that performance.
- 24:20He thinks he'll do all right. He doesn't predict how many homers he'll hit.
- 24:25He predicts he'll hit a few.
- 24:27Runner on second, one out. Ortega's pitching to Mantia. It's low for a ball, one-and-nothing.
- 24:35We had a lot of newspapers suddenly blowing out on the field. It's disgusting today.
- 24:40This is a circular stadium, complete circle, and it is protected by the wind somewhat.
- 24:47A one-oh pitch swings late and fouls it off. One ball, one strike.
- 24:52The National League today, the Dodgers are playing at New York against the Mets.
- 24:57San Francisco is at Pittsburgh, Milwaukee at Cincinnati, St. Louis at Chicago, and Philadelphia at Houston in a night game.
- 25:04Luckily, I guess, in Houston it's a night game.
- 25:07I'm waiting to see the ball in the daytime there, if the sun shines.
- 25:11That'll be the first time a game's ever been postponed because of sunshine.
- 25:15Here's the one-one pitch. A high fly and a shallow left.
- 25:19Frank Howard's looking up in that mean sun, waiting for it under it and takes it.
- 25:24And Nicolairo holds it second.
- 25:26We have two down.
- 25:30Right or not, Frank now's on.
- 25:34Old Man River has done that dependable day in, day out, year in, year out job for the Red Sox.
- 25:42The Dodgers are 34, starting another season in Boston.
- 25:51They're going to give Frank some rest this year now and then.
- 25:54Probably spelling with Bersu and move things around.
- 25:59Figure if he can play 125, 130 games, he'll, with some rest, he'll be an even better performer.
- 26:05And maybe can prolong his career a bit longer.
- 26:08Inside, a ball, one and nothing. Bob Tillman on deck.
- 26:12Canigliaro's on second, two down.
- 26:17No score in the top half of second.
- 26:21Daffy will be playing Melzone deep and toward left.
- 26:24A stretch by Ortega, in he comes with it.
- 26:27It's low, a ball, two and nothing.
- 26:30Two balls, no strikes.
- 26:33We have no game tomorrow. The two teams will be playing here on Wednesday.
- 26:37And then we'll be home to open the season next Saturday against the Baltimore Orioles.
- 26:43Two and all to count.
- 26:45The pitch, outside, ball free.
- 26:48Three and nothing now to Melzone.
- 26:50Incidentally, Jerry Vale will sing the national anthem, popular recording star next Saturday.
- 26:55Arthur Fiegler will conduct some colorful ceremonies in the first Saturday opener in the history of the American League.
- 27:02At Fenway Park next Saturday.
- 27:04Baltimore, good ball play. Baltimore and the Red Sox.
- 27:09A stretch, three-o pitch, ball four.
- 27:13Our first walk of the season.
- 27:15Canigliaro's at second. Melzone's at first. They're two down.
- 27:18And Bob Tillman up.
- 27:20Bob didn't hit much in spring training. He had a rough time.
- 27:24He had a good season last year though.
- 27:27And developed into one of the better catchers in the American League.
- 27:30They're hoping he can repeat this year.
- 27:36Bob hit 278 last year with 17 homers, 61 RBI.
- 27:41Swing sends the ground ball to shortstop Brinkman.
- 27:43Boots the ball. Can't make a play any play.
- 27:47Brinkman booted it.
- 27:50And the bases are loaded.
- 27:52Canigliaro's on third.
- 27:54Melzone's on second.
- 27:56Bob Tillman's at first.
- 27:59An easy hopping ball that just as Brinkman went to scoop up,
- 28:02he rolled up his arm and he dropped it and he couldn't make a play.
- 28:06Well, here's Bill Marblecat's first chance to help himself at the plate.
- 28:12He's not much of a hitter, but he's a good runner.
- 28:15Two down. You think he might put a squeeze on?
- 28:18I doubt it at this time.
- 28:20Those swinging pitchers are dangerous.
- 28:24Kyle Ball back, strike one.
- 28:28I would say that Bill's looking for the good fastball now,
- 28:31and he had a good cut at the last one.
- 28:34The ball's just swinging, you're a threat, and Bill's certainly doing that.
- 28:38And they should load a two-out for the Red Sox, top half of the second.
- 28:41One strike on him.
- 28:45Ball up high, one and one.
- 28:46Well, I said a squeeze with two outs is very unlikely, but let's face facts,
- 28:51because this guy is the greatest hitter in the world, as Jimmy G used to say.
- 28:55So as long as he's playing, he's dangerous, Kurt.
- 28:58One ball, one strike to Marblecat.
- 29:00Petrichele's on deck. Here comes the pitch.
- 29:03It's outside, ball two, two and one.
- 29:07And now the hometown Washington fans are starting to mumble a bit.
- 29:12Two balls, one strike.
- 29:19Mason loaded two away, second inning, no score.
- 29:22A combo waiting. Ortega tries to pop this one right in there, and he misses.
- 29:26Blowing away for ball three. He thought he had it over.
- 29:30Three balls and one strike.
- 29:35Three and one. This is a tough situation.
- 29:37Mason loaded two down for a pitcher, and this is the spot that you have to throw the strike in.
- 29:42Here it is. Strike two called.
- 29:46And here's our first three and two, the Big Windu situation of the year.
- 29:50Two down, runners will be going on the pitch. The bases are loaded.
- 29:58Ortega into the lineup. There go the runners, and the pitch is swung on and fouled back.
- 30:03Count stays three and two to Bill Mambo-Katz.
- 30:06Camigliano opened the inning with a single. He stole second.
- 30:09Thomas grounded out. Mantia pops up. Malzone walks.
- 30:13And Ed Brinkman booted Bob Tillman's easy ground ball to load the bases.
- 30:18Now Ortega has run the counts of three and two against Bill Mambo-Katz.
- 30:23A walk to give Mambo here the first RBI of the season.
- 30:26Here comes the delivery. It is strike called. He's out.
- 30:31Mambo started to toss away the bat at the inside corner, and Ortega gets out of the jam.
- 30:37In the second inning, the Red Sox had no runs. One hit.
- 30:41There was one Washington Air, and three men left.
- 30:44At the end of an inning and a half, the score, Red Sox nothing and the Senators nothing.
- 30:50At an inning, after eating, picture taking, coffee breaking, things go right when you light up a white light.
- 31:18The newest member of the White Owl Winner's Circle, the New Yorker, the big cigar for the big moments.
- 31:25And you don't have to inhale to enjoy. Created in honor of the World's Fair, White Owl New Yorker.
- 31:31While you're eating, or commuting, in your arms, at the World's Fair, things go right when you light up a white light.
- 31:57All right, we're going to the last half of the second inning. Don Locke, Willie Kirkland, and Mike Brumley will be up for the centers against Mambo Kets.
- 32:12Of the opening day pitcher schedules, we have only Mambo Kets, Al Jackson of the Mets, Larry Jackson of the Cubs,
- 32:22Juan Marichal of the Giants, Bob Beale of the Pirates, and Gary Peters of the White Sox,
- 32:28who had the honor of pitching opening days last year, who will repeat this year.
- 32:33We have three new managers in the American League, five new managers in the National League,
- 32:38and baseball will be played indoors for the first time tonight.
- 32:44That is Major League Baseball, the championship game.
- 32:48Don Locke, big power boy, hit.248 last year with 28 homers. Right-handed batter takes inside a ball, one and nothing.
- 32:56Locke has had a brilliant spring training, predicting his greatest season this year.
- 33:04Outfield playing him deep and toward left.
- 33:07There's a pitch to Amy, swings and misses on a low slider. One ball, one strike.
- 33:16Each team has had one hit.
- 33:20Bob Shantz singling for the Senators and Tony Conigliaro for the Red Sox.
- 33:27A one-one delivery.
- 33:29There's a long drive. Forget about that one. It is gone.
- 33:33Upper deck home run.
- 33:57Boy, that ball was hit.
- 33:59That was in the upper deck. And that ended 37 shutout innings at Montbleguet at Pittsburgh against Washington, 36 last year and one this year.
- 34:09He tagged what looked like a waist-high fastball in the upper deck in Westfield.
- 34:13They have President Johnson and Vice President Humphrey up on their feet, applauding him as he crowded into the dugout.
- 34:19Right call of the knees to Willie Kirkland.
- 34:21So the Senators are out in front, one and nothing.
- 34:24Well, we can see what they mean now about Locke.
- 34:26They're going to have a great year. They think he'll hit 40 home runs this year.
- 34:30That's just about as far as a man can hit a ball with.
- 34:34Pitch is low inside.
- 34:36The wall at that point is 381 and that ball traveled into the upper deck, which puts it well over 400 feet.
- 34:43It was quite a build. It was a waist-high fastball and Locke got a good track part of the bat on it and the ball traveled for great distance.
- 34:50Willie Kirkland up, nobody on, nobody out. Left-handed batter.
- 34:54They've changed him all around this year.
- 34:57He's a fellow that gets for power, but he's been hitting for a low average the last two or three years.
- 35:02He hit 212 last year.
- 35:04He used to be with the Indians.
- 35:06Two and one to Kirkland.
- 35:11Mike Brumley is on deck.
- 35:13The time calls.
- 35:15Kirkland has something in his eye, I believe.
- 35:17Now trying to get back in there.
- 35:21One to nothing, Washington ahead, last half of the second inning.
- 35:28An eye steps out again and umpire Joe Paparella is going to try and do a little doctoring.
- 35:37Here comes the trainer of the Senators out in the field.
- 35:39And while they try and remove something in his right eye, we'll take time for station identification.
- 35:45This is the Red Sox baseball network.
- 35:47You're listening to WAAB AM and FM in Worcester, Massachusetts.
- 35:52Fun Radio at 1440 on the dial.
- 35:55The time is 2 o'clock, the temperature 42 degrees.
- 36:05Back in action here, the 2-1 pitch is outside to Willie Kirkland.
- 36:08Ball free.
- 36:12Bases are empty, nobody out. Three and one to Kirkland.
- 36:22That home run seems to have shaken Mambo Cat up a bit.
- 36:24Here's the pitch it is, ball four, he walked him.
- 36:28So Kirkland's on.
- 36:32And the batter is catcher Mike Brumley.
- 36:36He was at 244 last year, not much power, he had two homers, he sprays them all around.
- 36:44He hits a lot to left center and left field.
- 36:47And that's where they're playing him right now.
- 36:51Play time is holding at first base against Kirkland.
- 36:56Ed Brinkman is on deck.
- 37:02Working out of the stretch, Mambo Cat's pitch, strike calls.
- 37:07Nothing and one to Mike Brumley.
- 37:15Eddie Ost is coaching at third.
- 37:20And Joe Pignatano at first, former catcher with the Dodger.
- 37:24Here's the delivery.
- 37:25In there, strike call, throw to first, but just getting back at Kirkland.
- 37:29Fairly close play at first base.
- 37:32Mambo Cat now ahead of Brumley, two strikes.
- 37:44Kirkland playing a safe at first.
- 37:46The stretch, pitch on the way.
- 37:49Strike three, call a good fastball on the inside corner to let her.
- 37:54Strike out number two for Mambo Cat.
- 37:58One out for the Washington Founders here in the second.
- 38:01And the batter now is Ed Brinkman, the shortstop, batting right handed.
- 38:06With Phil Ortega, due up next.
- 38:10Washington leading here one to nothing on Don Locke's tremendous home run in the last half of second inning.
- 38:18Mambo Cat is runner at first.
- 38:21And in there, strike call, four strikes in a row now delivered by Mambo Cat.
- 38:29Nothing and one.
- 38:32They're playing Brinkman, who hit 224 last year as they pull hitter to left field.
- 38:44One strike on him.
- 38:48Mambo Cat 15.
- 38:50A breaking pitch dips down and in.
- 38:54A ball one and one.
- 38:58A fan sitting along third base way and left field.
- 39:01And out on the center field, upward deck bleachers are out in the brilliant sunshine today.
- 39:07While in back a home plate and along first base and right field, they're in the shadows.
- 39:13A one-one pitch, there goes the runner.
- 39:15And with a swing and a miss, Tillman's throw to Petrocelli, out at second base.
- 39:21Kirkland is thrown out on a good throw by Tillman.
- 39:23Petrocelli took the throw and made the tag.
- 39:25It was a swing and a miss by Ed Brinkman trying to protect the runner.
- 39:30Oh, Tillman throws out the first runner trying to go down on him this year.
- 39:34Two down for Washington.
- 39:35The base is empty.
- 39:37And our count to Ed Brinkman is two and two.
- 39:45Mantia comes in and says something to Mambo Cat.
- 39:53He has a Latin English accent.
- 39:56He speaks English.
- 39:58Oh, I love to hear him talk.
- 40:00He's got a very attractive accent.
- 40:03He speaks English very well.
- 40:05Two to the count.
- 40:07Pitch.
- 40:09Try to curve it outside for ball three, three and two.
- 40:15Al Walker's first weather report of the year.
- 40:19Temperature is 81 degrees here in Washington.
- 40:2181.
- 40:22How about that on opening day?
- 40:25Humidity is only 18 percent.
- 40:27Usually it's very humid here, but this is one of the most comfortable days I could ever remember, being here in Washington.
- 40:34Three and two to Ed Brinkman, and the wind is 25 miles an hour.
- 40:39As the ground ball taps out to second baseman Mantia, he digs it up, throws the first, Senators are out.
- 40:45They had one run on a leadoff homer by Don Locke.
- 40:48One hit, there were no errors, nobody left.
- 40:51Score at the end of two innings, Washington one and the Red Sox nothing.
- 40:56Opening day at Fenway Park next Saturday afternoon.
- 40:59Baltimore and the Red Sox.
- 41:012.15 is game time.
- 41:06Joey Vail will sing the National Anthem.
- 41:08Arthur Feeler will be conducting.
- 41:10We have colorful opening ceremonies.
- 41:13Harvard Band will start entertaining at 1.45.
- 41:17The Harvard Band playing the National Anthem.
- 41:19Why not make plans to be on hand the next Saturday when the Orioles and the Red Sox open the American League season in Boston?
- 41:28I think Saturday is a good opening day for you.
- 41:31Take your family.
- 41:34And also remember the Orioles will be there on Easter Sunday and then next Monday, Washington is in town for a Patriots Day doubleheader starting at 1.30.
- 41:44We'll see you at Fenway Park next Saturday afternoon.
- 41:50Well, what do you think about the first two innings, Mel?
- 41:53So far we're seeing great pitching on the part of Noah Tager with his fast sinker and Billy Mamboquette mixing speed.
- 42:01Billy, of course, was the one fastball about belt high to Don Locke and Don hit it out of the ballpark with a tremendous clout.
- 42:10The infield is playing very slow and we notice that the infielders are moving in a step or two on the fast runner.
- 42:17The outfield also is playing slow due to the recent rains in the Washington area.
- 42:23Now back to Kurt Gowdy.
- 42:25Now I wouldn't be surprised if the ground ball hits through the infield.
- 42:28They're not rolling much. Somebody might try and go for two in this game, especially with the tight one in the late inning.
- 42:34Yes, it's possible because the ball isn't rolling too good in the outfield.
- 42:37Here's Petrocelli up swings and misses on a fastball for strike one. Petrocelli struck out his first time.
- 42:44This is the top of the Red Sox batting order. Petrocelli, Lenny Green, and Carl Yaspemsky, third inning.
- 42:51Ortega right ends the pitch over for a strike call, a fastball, nothing and two.
- 42:56One run, two hits, one error for the Senators. No runs, one hit, no errors for the Red Sox.
- 43:05Petrocelli in a hole, two strikes.
- 43:07The pitch to him, a curve low and inside, a ball, one and two.
- 43:14The Washington fans had an added treat yesterday. The Dodgers were in here for a three-game exhibition series.
- 43:22Sandy Kovacs came on the pitch in the fifth inning yesterday, a one-two delivery.
- 43:27He goes for a bat pitch and strikes out way over his head, brumly drops the ball, picks it up, throws the chance at first.
- 43:35Petrocelli, overanxious, strikes out on a pitch up around his eyes. That's twice in a row he's struck out.
- 43:41One out, nobody on, and Lenny Green the batter.
- 43:44Kovacs came in with all the publicity about arthritis and he may be done.
- 43:49He faced ten batters and struck out five.
- 43:55Here's the delivery. It's in there, strike call. I don't believe there's much doubt about it.
- 43:59Healthy, here's the greatest pitcher in baseball, Kovacs.
- 44:03He struck out 18 men in a game, nobody's ever done that.
- 44:07Three no-hitters in a row, three successive seasons.
- 44:11One strike to Lenny Green, third baseman playing shallow on him.
- 44:16There's a little tapper hit down to that third baseman drawing in.
- 44:18McMullen throws to first and Green is out.
- 44:22Two down in the third inning.
- 44:26And so far the top of the order has it sniffed Ortega.
- 44:34Two down, nobody on, and Carl Yastremsky is up.
- 44:39Tony Canigliaro beyond best.
- 44:45The out-of-pitch bounce is in the dirt up against the screen, ball one.
- 44:54One to nothing, Washington leading on Don Locke's tremendous homer in the last half a second.
- 45:02Ortega winds and throws. Yastremsky takes it outside, ball two.
- 45:06Two to nothing.
- 45:12Good balls, no strikes.
- 45:15Yastremsky had a good spring training also, hitting well over 300.
- 45:19Here's the 2-0 delivery, and he takes that one high for ball three.
- 45:25Three to nothing now. Ortega walks Mel Zon in the second. That's his only walk so far.
- 45:35They just changed the count. It's wrong in the scoreboard and umpire Papparello signals.
- 45:39Out of the 3-0 delivery. He bores that one over for a strike call, three and one.
- 45:46You know early you're always suspect of these starting pitchers early in the year of going nine innings.
- 45:52Well that's true. Of course if they get enough work in spring training it will help.
- 45:56Here's ball four. Of course with the many pitchers in spring training it's rather difficult to get all of your pitchers in to get enough work to get to the start of the season.
- 46:06Of course if you encounter bad weather in the early part of the season it makes it very troublesome for your pitching staff.
- 46:12He's throwing very strongly. It appears to be very deceptive. He has a curled wrist action which can be very deceiving to the hitter.
- 46:21Alright here's Kanigaleiro up. He's had the only hit for the Red Sox.
- 46:25There's a little looper. May drop right center. It's in a base hit.
- 46:28Yosemite is coming on the third and Kanigaleiro now is two for two as he drops it in to shallow right center.
- 46:36He hit that one off the end of the bat and dunked it out in the right center but it's a base hit.
- 46:41Now the Red Sox at the base that loaded in the second fail to score.
- 46:44Now they have runners on first and third here in the third with two down. Both times with two down their sweaters come up.
- 46:52Lee Thomas grounded out to the first baseman his first time.
- 46:57Each team now has two hits.
- 47:04Felix Mantia is on deck.
- 47:08Ortega with a stretch working to Thomas.
- 47:11Swings and fouls a fast ball back out of play. Strike one.
- 47:17Drempski at third. Kanigaleiro at first. Two away.
- 47:20What a way to start a season for Kanigaleiro now two for two.
- 47:25Seems as though Tony brought that hot bat along from spring training.
- 47:28He had a very good spring training. Hit the ball well throughout the entire training season.
- 47:35And of course in this ball game he's two for two.
- 47:39Here's that Tony's off to a good start and we'll have a good year.
- 47:42Here's the one strike pitch to Thomas.
- 47:44There's a high pop foul off to the left.
- 47:47Rumley's chasing it and can't get to it.
- 47:49It drops in about five or six rows right down below it.
- 47:55See Dick O'Connell of the Red Sox vice president.
- 47:59Jack Hayes, partner of Brian Bader and Gould and Tony for the Red Sox.
- 48:05At least we have Tom Dowdowd and now we've got some Red Sox routers here.
- 48:09Got Senator Kennedy here today rooting for the Red Sox too.
- 48:13I guess President Johnson's probably rooting for Washington, huh?
- 48:17Pitch is high for a ball one and two.
- 48:25One ball, two strikes.
- 48:26Funny thing about this town.
- 48:27There are so many transits live here come from all over that they always,
- 48:33many of them come out and root for the visiting ball club.
- 48:37Government work.
- 48:38Here's the stretch now, the one-two delivery.
- 48:40There's a long belt by Thomas, hit deep.
- 48:43That ball is going, going.
- 48:44It is gone.
- 48:45A home run for Lee Thomas over the scoreboard in right center.
- 48:50And the Red Sox are out in front by a score of three to one.
- 48:55Two down, Yosinski walks an eagerly error, single to right.
- 48:59And Lee Thomas felt the home run, just under the scoreboard in the middle area,
- 49:06just under the upper deck out there over the 378 mark.
- 49:10Three to one.
- 49:11And two homers have provided all the scoring.
- 49:15And Tia's up now.
- 49:16He's flying out his first time.
- 49:18And that bases on ball started it.
- 49:21Pitch is outside with two down or take a walk, Yosinski.
- 49:23Boy, those walks will get you in trouble.
- 49:25They'll do it every time.
- 49:27That's one of the things that pitches hate, but can do very little about.
- 49:32Pitch is low and we may have a little action springing up here in the Washington bullpen.
- 49:39Do an O to Mantia.
- 49:41Now zone on deck.
- 49:42Red Sox are ahead now, three to one.
- 49:48Or take a working.
- 49:50Pia takes low.
- 49:53Or take a having trouble finding home plate.
- 49:55Gil Hodges during out there to that bullpen.
- 49:59He'll be anxiously watching Ortega here.
- 50:02This kid got a $75,000 bonus four years ago by the Dodgers, Ortega.
- 50:07And Pia goes after it and misses.
- 50:09He was born in Adobe Hut, little town of Gilbert, Arizona, just outside Mesa.
- 50:15He's a Yaqui Indian of Mexican defense.
- 50:18Never quite did it with the Dodgers, although he still has a lot of promise.
- 50:22With a good arm he has.
- 50:23The pitch.
- 50:24There's a long belt by Mantia.
- 50:26That ball riding deep and it is gone.
- 50:29A home run by Mantia into the Red Sox bullpen over the 381 mark.
- 50:35And the Red Sox are out in front by a score of four to one as Elgato, the cat Mantia, picks up where he left off last year.
- 50:44Mantia hit three homers here last year.
- 50:50He only hit 30 last year, more than one year last year than he'd ever hit in all his major league career.
- 50:57And he starts opening day here.
- 50:59But Thomas and Mantia now have back to back home runs.
- 51:03Red Sox ahead four to one.
- 51:06And a little blasting games coming in to talk to Ortega in the batter of Frank Melzone.
- 51:12Bob Tillman is on deck.
- 51:16Melzone walks his first time up.
- 51:19Ortega's pitch is high and away, ball one.
- 51:23One and nothing.
- 51:28Both Thomas and Mantia hit his fastball.
- 51:31Here's the one-oh pitch.
- 51:32It's outside for ball two.
- 51:34Two and nothing.
- 51:41Two balls, no strikes.
- 51:51Now they wind up in delivery.
- 51:53Foul ball back out of play.
- 51:57Two and one to Melzone.
- 52:00Three homers already in this ball game.
- 52:02Actually, Mel, this is a good ball park to hit on runs in.
- 52:06The thing is that the ball won't carry if you get it up high.
- 52:11Down low the ball seems to die some.
- 52:13Melzone hits a change up, pops it up in a shallow left.
- 52:16They had him off balance.
- 52:17Brickman backs up and takes it.
- 52:19Besides that, but the Red Sox had four runs in the third inning on three hits.
- 52:24No washers and errors, nobody left.
- 52:26Score at the end of two and a half.
- 52:28It's a shot for Senators 1.
- 52:36Cigarettes to Grellon.
- 53:05Cigarettes to Grellon.
- 53:12Cigarettes to Grellon.
- 53:23The mud and smoke found at all the right places with all the right people.
- 53:36We're ready to go now on the last of the third inning with the Red Sox out in front four to one.
- 53:40Four runs, four hits for the Red Sox.
- 53:42One run, two hits for the Senators.
- 53:44Now to take over to play-by-play, Ned Marks.
- 53:50Washington trailing four to one now.
- 53:58And their pitcher, Phil Ortega, will hit for himself.
- 54:01Nobody warming up on the Washington bullpen.
- 54:04Ortega bats right.
- 54:05Mambo's first pitch to him is a called strike on the outside corner.
- 54:10Ortega was shaken up a little bit by the home run blast of Thomas Mancia.
- 54:16But Gil Hodges going with him as long as he can.
- 54:20Ground ball to the right side, scooped up by Mancia at second base.
- 54:24Felix throws him out.
- 54:25There's one away.
- 54:26Ortega grounding out second to first.
- 54:29Now the top of the order, Don Blassingame.
- 54:33A pesky little hitter who last year hit well for the Senators and had a fine spring.
- 54:41One of the top hitters on the ball club this spring.
- 54:43Came over from the National League and won himself a home right here in Washington.
- 54:49Been a good leadoff man for them.
- 54:53Chokes up about an inch on the bat.
- 54:55Malzone comes in a couple of steps with Blassingame up there.
- 54:59Don is a good hitter.
- 55:02Curve ball breaks in and over, called strike one.
- 55:06Mal, you were talking earlier about the 1952 opener.
- 55:10How did you see that game?
- 55:13When I was living down here I remember it.
- 55:15That was great memories.
- 55:17When Pierce Hall was playing short wasn't he?
- 55:20That's right.
- 55:21Jimmy Pierce Hall had shot stop for it.
- 55:23Fastball is outside and the count is one and one.
- 55:26They had Lepsey over and St. Schoenberry and a few of those younger boys.
- 55:31At the time Lou Boudreau was experimenting with Jimmy Pierce Hall.
- 55:34He thought that Jimmy would have great range as an infielder and move him to the shot stop position.
- 55:39Later Jimmy found his way back out to the outfield.
- 55:42He sure did.
- 55:43There's a blooper in the shallow center field bringing Lenny Green on in a hurry.
- 55:47Lenny's there.
- 55:48He makes the catch.
- 55:49Green had to come away in towards second base but he made the catch about 40 feet back of second base and there are two away.
- 55:59Here's Ken McMullen, third baseman for the Senators, formerly with the Dodgers.
- 56:03He took a third strike in the first inning.
- 56:07This is the Dodger alumni over here this year where they've got them all over the place including their coaches now.
- 56:13It's Pignatano, that fellow named Dick Ninh who was in the Miners last year but got a very important hit for them two years ago called strike on the hitter, McMullen.
- 56:25This ball club is confusing for me to look at after seeing these many fellows with the Dodgers.
- 56:31And of course as you mentioned Pignatano and the coaching box.
- 56:35They're just about all over this ball park.
- 56:38Well since Hodges came here he's been on a pipeline from Los Angeles called strike to McMullen, count on two.
- 56:46Gill the old Dodger and I imagine has a little thing working with Luzzy Buffet.
- 56:50He's out there and says, all right, if you don't want him, give him to me and we'll build here.
- 56:55Well it has helped us watch this ball club quite a bit.
- 56:58It's going to be a good club to watch this year.
- 57:00They're exciting.
- 57:02They've got power.
- 57:04This ball moves inside.
- 57:07The count on Ken McMullen is one ball, two strikes.
- 57:12I tell you they say Locke can hit 40.
- 57:14Well if Howard ever gets on track this is not a bad park for him either.
- 57:18He may hit 50.
- 57:20That's big selling.
- 57:24Rambo Ketch delivers and it's just tied inside.
- 57:30Two balls, two strikes.
- 57:33I was talking about Howard.
- 57:35What a problem he presents to the opposing pitcher.
- 57:38Size alone is enough to scare you.
- 57:40Yeah, but he's got a great strike zone, hasn't he?
- 57:43He has, but he covers that strike zone pretty well with that big bat of his.
- 57:47They say no.
- 57:49We'll get to that in a minute.
- 57:51The pitch to McMullen is fouled down the right field line going out of play.
- 57:55We're talking to some of the Washington writers and John McClain, the Washington broadcaster,
- 57:59said what kind of spring did Howard have?
- 58:01Well it's not been good.
- 58:03He hit only one home run.
- 58:05He said he's been over swinging which has been his trouble all along.
- 58:07Anybody with that kind of power can do it just normally without overdoing it.
- 58:13He's a confusing hitter, Ned.
- 58:15You can fool him with throw stuff and yet he can reach out with that tremendous power,
- 58:19hit the ball out of the ballpark.
- 58:21He's very tough to pitch to because you just don't know what to do, what to throw.
- 58:26I need to take my time to get him out.
- 58:30McMullen lifts one high in the air to left center field.
- 58:33Yastremski having trouble with the sun is over there, but he's got on to the ball
- 58:37and it makes the catch in left center.
- 58:39McMullen popping out to Kyle Yastremski and the 1-2-3 innings for Bill Marble
- 58:44can't get the Senators in order in the third.
- 58:47Score at the end of three innings is the Red Sox 4 and the Senators 1.
- 58:53Say does the smoking scene look a little cloudy to you?
- 58:56Well take heart.
- 58:57There's a bright spot.
- 58:58It's the White Owl Miniature Cigar.
- 59:00The White Owl Miniature is a mild cigar, small enough to smoke when you're pressed for time
- 59:05and yet big enough so you won't be tempted to inhale.
- 59:09And the tobaccos in the White Owl Miniature are aged for years to give you unusual mildness and taste
- 59:15with an aroma that's always welcome.
- 59:18Smoking a White Owl Miniature is a relaxing pleasure and not a nervous habit.
- 59:23And now the poet, Zachary, wrote that cigars are, quote, a kind companion, a gentle stimulant,
- 59:29a surrender of friendship.
- 59:32You know that?
- 59:33Well today you can call the White Owl Miniature your kind companion.
- 59:37So make the switch to White Owl Miniature, the bright spot in the smoking picture.
- 59:41Five-pack, just 28 cents.
- 59:44Three innings have gone by and the Red Sox have four runs on four hits, played errorless ball.
- 59:54Washington one run, two hits, and one error.
- 59:56Let's see what we have on the White Owl scoreboard.
- 1:00:00In the National League, the Giants and Pirates are scoreless at the end of three innings,
- 1:00:06Marischal against Veale.
- 1:00:07That's the only other game that's underway right now.
- 1:00:12Bob Tillman leads off with the Red Sox as we move to the top of the fourth.
- 1:00:17Tilley reached on an error in the second inning, an error by Brinkman, the shortstop.
- 1:00:22Tillman takes a strike from Ortega.
- 1:00:24The count is one ball, one strike.
- 1:00:27As Kirk pointed out, Tilley had a tough spring.
- 1:00:30He hit about 190, which was in complete contrast to his spring a year ago.
- 1:00:36Ground ball hits the third on the changeup, gobbled up by McMullen.
- 1:00:40He's tossed a chance in plenty of time and Tillman is out.
- 1:00:44One away, third to first, and Mambo-Kett coming to the plate.
- 1:00:48What they expect, said Billy Herman, is Tillman made himself a hitter last year
- 1:00:53and he has no doubt that Bob will be up there around the 280, 290 mark as he was most of last season.
- 1:01:00Mambo-Kett took a third strike his first time up.
- 1:01:03Ortega's pitch to him is in there, called strike one.
- 1:01:07He just joined us. Washington scored first on Don Locks' homer into the upper deck in the second.
- 1:01:15Mambo reaches for one and taps it on the ground on the right side.
- 1:01:18Blasting game up with it at second, throws him out by a step.
- 1:01:21That was a grasscutter, not a hard hit.
- 1:01:23Two away.
- 1:01:25The Red Sox scored all four runs in the third.
- 1:01:28When with two out, Jaskremski walked.
- 1:01:30Kanigaleo got his second single.
- 1:01:32Then Thomas hit a three-run homer followed by Mantia's base is empty homer.
- 1:01:38That has been the long ball that's brought it to the Red Sox.
- 1:01:40Here's Rico Petracelli.
- 1:01:42Struck out twice, he swings at the first pitch, strike one.
- 1:01:47Rico, who won himself an opening day job with his work of field,
- 1:01:53considered a step or two faster than Bersou, still has to hit big league pitching,
- 1:01:57hit 170 in spring training,
- 1:02:00and there's a foul off the end of the bat, all in two.
- 1:02:03But I think you're going to like this fellow around short at Fenway.
- 1:02:07He has great range, gets the ball away quick,
- 1:02:10and has provided a lot of us with short stopping.
- 1:02:15That will take its place with Versalli's, Kubeck, this fellow here, Brinkman,
- 1:02:22anybody in the American league,
- 1:02:24as far as the mechanics around the position are concerned in the field.
- 1:02:28He pitches inside ball one, one and two.
- 1:02:31That Rico has great balance and great range, good quick hands.
- 1:02:34He makes the tough play look routine,
- 1:02:37and it's really something to see to watch this young fellow move around the infield.
- 1:02:41One-two pitch to him, moves outside two.
- 1:02:45Well, he's trying to get the seal at the plate, too, Mel, by switch hitting,
- 1:02:50and he's batting left now against Ortega.
- 1:02:52He came into baseball as strictly a right-handed hitter.
- 1:02:59Two-two delivery, jumps him back from the plate, ball three.
- 1:03:03Bob Gibson goes for the Cardinals this afternoon against Larry Jackson of the Cubs.
- 1:03:07The Dodgers lead the Mets 2-0 after one inning in their ball game.
- 1:03:12Cincinnati and Milwaukee, Kloninger will go for Milwaukee, and O'Toole for Cincinnati.
- 1:03:21Three-two delivery to Petrocelli, foul back, and Rico hangs in there, free ball, two strikes.
- 1:03:30Narragansett Lagerbeer, your host for the middle innings, a high neighbor, have a guess.
- 1:03:35Twenty-first year of sponsorship of Red Sox baseball for Narragansett.
- 1:03:47Ortega gets another baseball. The Arizona Indian youngster looks in for the sign from Mike Brumley.
- 1:03:55Wines and Fires three-two, it's fouled at the plate by Petrocelli, who hangs tough.
- 1:04:01Billy Gardner coaching down a third base for the Red Sox, and Len Oakrey is coaching it first.
- 1:04:06Oakrey coming in from the bullpen to fill in for Pete Runnels, who had an ulcer operation recently
- 1:04:13down in the Pasadena, Texas. He will be rejoining the club in another month or so.
- 1:04:23Ortega is the full count pitch once again. He misses this time, and Petrocelli waits him out for a walk.
- 1:04:29While he trots to first, let's pause for a station break. This is the Red Sox baseball network.
- 1:04:52Back in D.C. Stadium, Red Sox with a man on and two outs, the batter is Lenny Green.
- 1:04:58He looks at the first pitch up high, ball one. Red Sox ahead four to one. We're in the top of the fourth.
- 1:05:04Petrocelli with a walk as at first base. Ortega bends in for the sign.
- 1:05:11There it goes. There goes the runner, high for a ball, throw to second.
- 1:05:14Petrocelli slides. He is out. Brinkman slaps the tag on him.
- 1:05:19Play going from the catcher to the shortstop covering, and the attempted steal backfires.
- 1:05:24That's all for the Red Sox.
- 1:05:26This is WAAB. I am at FM Worcester, Massachusetts.
- 1:05:30So three and a half innings is the Red Sox four and Washington one.
- 1:05:37Twenty-one years ago, Narragansett Lager beer had started sponsoring Red Sox baseball.
- 1:05:41A lot of faces on the field have changed since then.
- 1:05:44But the famous drink from the barrel case and each and every drop of Narragansett Lager beer is as refreshing as ever.
- 1:05:51That's a taste that people have come to know and enjoy for many, many years.
- 1:05:54So have a glass of beer that's bringing you all the action, excitement for older Red Sox baseball for the 21st straight year.
- 1:06:01We mentioned earlier there are some Red Sox fans here.
- 1:06:04One of them is Senator Edward Kennedy, who is here rooting for the Red Sox today,
- 1:06:09and we ask him to come up and say hello to you all.
- 1:06:12First of all, how are you feeling, Senator?
- 1:06:14I want to very, very well.
- 1:06:16It's a delightful day down here, and I'm glad to be up with you.
- 1:06:19I remember your being up with you last year, the opening game, the home game of the Red Sox,
- 1:06:26when Tom Yawkey and the Red Sox organization were kind enough to give the proceeds through the Kennedy Library.
- 1:06:33So I'm a great fan, always have been, and it's good to be up here on opening day.
- 1:06:37That's right, and I told Billy Herman he'd be here today, and he said, well, wish him luck.
- 1:06:41I said, well, maybe you want to wish Billy luck, too.
- 1:06:43Oh, I certainly do.
- 1:06:44I think they certainly have got a lot of huff-hulls up today and great hitting power.
- 1:06:49I think it's going to be a great year.
- 1:06:51I always enjoy following them.
- 1:06:53We don't always get the chance to get out here, but we've got a great start of the season.
- 1:06:57I have, you'd think that I might have some split loyalties today being in Washington and playing the Senators,
- 1:07:02but there's no problem for me.
- 1:07:04Good. Thank you very much, Senator Kennedy.
- 1:07:06Glad to see you're feeling better and stronger every day,
- 1:07:09and we're ready to go now on the last of the fourth inning.
- 1:07:12And that's the offset here with Maumouquette pitching.
- 1:07:20The first pitch by Bill Maumouquette is swung on and missed as Bob Chance takes the first cut.
- 1:07:31Chance got a single left field, got the first hit of the season, actually,
- 1:07:36dumped the single in there in the first inning.
- 1:07:41He's a hitter and he takes the pitch outside, one ball, one strike.
- 1:07:47You remember very well the opener that Senator Kennedy was talking about last year at Fenway
- 1:07:51when everybody came and watched the Red Sox beat the White Sox.
- 1:07:57Line dry off the left field.
- 1:07:59Chance may get more than one on this one.
- 1:08:01The ball sinks in the grass, picked up by Yacenki.
- 1:08:03Chance trying for two to throw is not quite in time as he beats the attack by Van Pia.
- 1:08:10He almost nailed him at second base.
- 1:08:15Van Pia, I don't believe, knew that Chance was going to be coming in there.
- 1:08:20Felix was off the bag and then made a belated dive for him,
- 1:08:23and Chance slid in under the throw, which was a good one by Yaz, for a two-base hit.
- 1:08:29So that's two for two for Bob Chance.
- 1:08:32That ball ordinarily, Mel, would have gone all the way to the fence,
- 1:08:35but on this day it just died in that grass out there.
- 1:08:38That's right, the slow outfield killed the ball.
- 1:08:40It all had to come in on the ball and make a barehand pickup and a quick throw to second base.
- 1:08:46The throw was just to the right of the bag.
- 1:08:48Chance slid to the left of the bag.
- 1:08:50It just didn't get in under the tag by Van Pia.
- 1:08:54So the Senators are cooking something here with a man at second, nobody out,
- 1:08:58and the batter is Mike Howard, Big Hondo as they call him.
- 1:09:03The Dodgers called him.
- 1:09:05This is a menacing-looking man, I tell you.
- 1:09:08Facially he resembles Arnold Early a little bit on the red side.
- 1:09:13Pitch is inside and high to him, ball one.
- 1:09:16A man with this power can be fooled easily, but the brute power makes up for the many mistakes
- 1:09:21that he may make in trying to attack the pitch.
- 1:09:25You remember seeing that World Series on television a couple of years ago
- 1:09:28at Homer E. Ed in L.A. against Whitey Ford?
- 1:09:30I think it was.
- 1:09:31It was somebody else, but nobody's ever matched that one.
- 1:09:39Pitch is down low and outside.
- 1:09:442-0.
- 1:09:45He hit a tremendous double or triple against Ford in Yankee Stadium,
- 1:09:48which was out near the flagpole and all the monuments there,
- 1:09:51and then he went to Los Angeles and hit one into the upper deck,
- 1:09:55which hovers over the bullpen in Chavez Ravine,
- 1:09:58which is about as far as anybody has hit that ball in that ballpark.
- 1:10:04He's a shotgun up there.
- 1:10:06This spring, they say, they've always been hitting the top of the ball.
- 1:10:09He's hit everything on the ground.
- 1:10:12Mambo gets delivery, breaks outside, ball three.
- 1:10:16Mambo being careful.
- 1:10:23Now it has such tremendous size that that looks like a tooth-taking hand.
- 1:10:27Kind of like Boog Powell from the other side,
- 1:10:30Powell of Baltimore.
- 1:10:32Makes that bat look little.
- 1:10:34Howard had only one spring training home run.
- 1:10:36That was hit in Mexico City.
- 1:10:42He wore weights in his shoes for a couple of weeks to try to,
- 1:10:45he took off 30 pounds of weight, and that's no mean feat.
- 1:10:51He picked ball four.
- 1:10:54Senators have runners at first and second, nobody out.
- 1:10:58That was the second walk off Mambo.
- 1:11:06Bob Stillman out to talk to Mambo Ketch.
- 1:11:12And the hitter is Don Locke, who drilled one into the upper deck
- 1:11:16in the second inning for the Senators' run.
- 1:11:19Twenty-eight home runs last year for this fellow.
- 1:11:29Steve Rydzik, a right-hander, is throwing now on the Senator bullpen.
- 1:11:34If it gets down as far as the pitcher, this inning and the batting order,
- 1:11:37they may hit for Ortega.
- 1:11:41Locke crouched to the plate.
- 1:11:43Hanson Howard lead away, and the first pitch is a call strike one.
- 1:11:51Frank Howard at first base.
- 1:11:53We were saying he took off 30 pounds.
- 1:11:55He came in weighing 274, way overweight.
- 1:11:57Now it's 248, 250, which still is big.
- 1:12:02He worked very hard to get himself in shape.
- 1:12:06Bob Chet leads away from second.
- 1:12:08Howard with a big lead off first.
- 1:12:10Locke hits one up in the air.
- 1:12:11Sky-high to shallow center.
- 1:12:13Lenny Green looking up, waiting for it.
- 1:12:16Makes the catch.
- 1:12:17The runner is holed as the throw comes into Petrocelli.
- 1:12:21Locke flies to center.
- 1:12:22There's one down.
- 1:12:29Willie Kirkland, he walked in the second inning
- 1:12:33and was cut down trying to steal a moment later.
- 1:12:46Nice to see the slim trim Al Walker here again with us this year.
- 1:12:50He's gone into his annual diet and is down to 248 himself.
- 1:12:58Kirkland batting from the left side.
- 1:13:01Chance off second. Howard off first.
- 1:13:04Mambo comes to the belt.
- 1:13:06His pitch is lofted high into the infield.
- 1:13:09Back to the plate now.
- 1:13:11Now it's being called infield fly.
- 1:13:14Malzone drops the ball.
- 1:13:16Throws to second.
- 1:13:17Mancilla tags everybody and it's out.
- 1:13:22Looks like an infield fly rule was called first.
- 1:13:24Malzone dropped the ball.
- 1:13:26It started out in foul ground behind home plate.
- 1:13:29It dropped it at over.
- 1:13:35Infield fly rule was called by plate umpire Paparello.
- 1:13:38Although Malzone dropped the ball, it doesn't make any difference.
- 1:13:40The batter is out.
- 1:13:41He threw to second base.
- 1:13:43And the runner at second chance is off the base.
- 1:13:45He was tagged out and it's a double play.
- 1:13:47That's the way it goes.
- 1:13:48Infield fly rule called with the batter out.
- 1:13:51And the runner at his own risk, Chance, taking the runner off the base.
- 1:13:55So he is out.
- 1:13:56At the end of four innings, it's Boston four runs, four-inch no errors.
- 1:13:59Washington one run, three hits and one error.
- 1:14:02Leading off for the Red Sox is Lenny Green and coming back in is Kurt Gotti.
- 1:14:07Well the fans are still buzzing about that double play.
- 1:14:12And so many times a year we get questions on the infield fly rule.
- 1:14:17We just saw a good example of it there.
- 1:14:18Lenny Green's up.
- 1:14:20He takes a slow curve for a strike call from Phil Ortega.
- 1:14:23With runners on first and second or first, second and third, less than two outs.
- 1:14:27The batter hits what in the judgment of the umpire is a fly ball that can be handled by an infielder.
- 1:14:31The batter is automatically out.
- 1:14:33And runners advance at their own risk.
- 1:14:35A swing and a miss.
- 1:14:36Strike two.
- 1:14:37So Kirkland hit the pop-up.
- 1:14:39He was automatically out when the umpire called infield fly rule affair.
- 1:14:44And Bob Chance, who was on first after Malzone dropped the ball, ran down to second and threw the man to you,
- 1:14:50who first stepped on the bag and then tagged him.
- 1:14:52The two strike sets.
- 1:14:54And the drive hit right down the right field line.
- 1:14:56Let's see if it's fair.
- 1:14:58It's a fair ball bouncing in the corner.
- 1:15:02And let's see.
- 1:15:03Oh, just clear defense.
- 1:15:05It's just clear defense for a home run for Lenny Green.
- 1:15:10The stands jut around in the corner and we couldn't see the ball in the corner.
- 1:15:14We saw it bounce in the over defense.
- 1:15:17And didn't know whether it's clear defense or bounced over with the way the stands jut out and obscure our view in that corner.
- 1:15:24A home run for Lenny Green right down the line.
- 1:15:27You can't hit him down the line any truer than that.
- 1:15:30That was fair by about a foot.
- 1:15:32And that's the third home run for the Red Sox in this game.
- 1:15:36Which is outside, ball one.
- 1:15:37The Red Sox lead now by a score of five to one.
- 1:15:41Green is homered.
- 1:15:42Lee Thomas has hit a free run.
- 1:15:43Homer Felix Mantias homered.
- 1:15:47And Iglial Zondek pitches low.
- 1:15:51Ball two to Carl Yastremski.
- 1:15:54You can see why Lenny Green worked his way into the starting lineup.
- 1:15:58Like he was going to be a minor leaguer and he came into spring training, worked hard, had a great spring training, and now gets in a home run here in the opening game.
- 1:16:07Their pitch is outside, ball three to Yastremski who is grounded out and walks.
- 1:16:16Steve Rydzik is warming up in the center bullpen.
- 1:16:19Free balls and no strikes.
- 1:16:21Here's the pitch.
- 1:16:23Ball four, it's low.
- 1:16:25Yastremski's on.
- 1:16:28And Tony Kanigla-Harrows coming up.
- 1:16:31Kanigla-Harrows single to left, he's single to right.
- 1:16:34He's two for two.
- 1:16:36At Lenny Green you couldn't pull a ball down that line like that in the better, Mel.
- 1:16:42Lenny's a real aggressive hitter.
- 1:16:44He attacks the pitcher all the way.
- 1:16:46He goes out after that fast ball and of course in that case he did the same thing.
- 1:16:49He went out, got the fast ball, pulled it down the right field line.
- 1:16:53That ball went right into the corner just over the 3.35 sign.
- 1:16:56There goes the runner.
- 1:16:57It's a slow ball for a strike, a high throw, and safe for second is Yastremski with a stolen base.
- 1:17:03Billy Herman really has him running.
- 1:17:05That's two stolen bases in the game.
- 1:17:08Kanigla-Harrows in the second, Yastremski here in the fifth.
- 1:17:11Pepper Shelley was thrown out trying to get out of the four.
- 1:17:14But he has him moving.
- 1:17:18So we have a runner on second.
- 1:17:20That takes off the double play situation, fourth double play.
- 1:17:24Kanigla-Harrows hits a little roller down toward third.
- 1:17:27Ortega picks it up with a bare hand.
- 1:17:29He's out at first play at first base.
- 1:17:31Over to third goes Yastremski.
- 1:17:33Ortega ran off the mound, picked that one up with his throwing hand,
- 1:17:38and got him on a very close play at first base.
- 1:17:41One out, Yastremski's on third.
- 1:17:44And Lee Thomas up.
- 1:17:45Thomas grounded out in the second.
- 1:17:47Bell with a three-run homer in the third to right field.
- 1:17:55Five to one.
- 1:17:57Red Sox ahead here in the top of the fifth inning.
- 1:18:03Felix Mantee on deck, infield in.
- 1:18:05There's a sharp runner to second.
- 1:18:07Blossing game looks.
- 1:18:09Yastremski back to third and makes the play over to first and is two down.
- 1:18:14Now Thomas couldn't get the ball up in the air that time.
- 1:18:17Two down, Yastremski's still on third.
- 1:18:19Felix Mantee up, is flied out and hit a home run.
- 1:18:24The Red Sox broke their own home run record last year.
- 1:18:26They bowled at 186 homers.
- 1:18:29Second in the majors.
- 1:18:31They led the league in hitting all year but finished eighth.
- 1:18:35Billy Herman, knowing this, has tried to improve the team defensively, add more speed.
- 1:18:40Today we've seen two stolen bases.
- 1:18:42I think they stole how many? Eighteen all of last year, something?
- 1:18:45Swinging a miss.
- 1:18:47Looks like a little bit different type of attack, and one that's going to help especially defensively.
- 1:18:54No substitute for speed in any sport.
- 1:18:57One strike to Mantee.
- 1:19:04Yastremski on third, two down.
- 1:19:06There's a high fly down the left field line.
- 1:19:09Frank Howard chasing it over by the fans.
- 1:19:11He doesn't have a play on it.
- 1:19:15It's a foul ball.
- 1:19:17Fans were contesting Howard for the ball down the left field line.
- 1:19:21So the count to Mantee, now two strikes.
- 1:19:41Nice telegram from Cliff Holt and the Atlanta Refining Company in Philadelphia.
- 1:19:45He always thinks of us every year at the start of the season.
- 1:19:49Hand it to us. Here's the pitch.
- 1:19:51Inside, ball won.
- 1:19:56Here's one on your 15th year with the Red Sox.
- 1:19:59Hope that you have happiness and the gladness we had together.
- 1:20:01Good luck for another season, your pal, Johnny Orlando.
- 1:20:05Play delivery.
- 1:20:07Ground ball to third.
- 1:20:08Look at this, Ken McMullen fires the first.
- 1:20:11Mantee is out and the Red Sox are retired.
- 1:20:13In the fifth inning, one run for the Red Sox, one hit, a home run by Lenny Green.
- 1:20:18There were no errors and one man left.
- 1:20:21Well, we've gone halfway in the opening game of the 1965 season,
- 1:20:25and the score is the Red Sox 5 and the Senators 1.
- 1:20:32Hi, Mee.
- 1:20:33Hi, Mee.
- 1:20:34I brought you a glass of Marigans and lager beer.
- 1:20:37The beer to give you that famous straight from the barrel taste.
- 1:20:40To taste the people who really know beer like this.
- 1:20:43Gants of light but not too light.
- 1:20:45The television cameras around you, how about taking a sip of Gants of beer
- 1:20:48and telling us how you feel about it?
- 1:20:50Maybe you're in the middle of the outfield in the game.
- 1:20:52And they don't play any balls coming this way.
- 1:20:54It might be. I'm playing a game, madam. You've got...
- 1:20:56Sorry, Mike.
- 1:20:57The Marigans, if you would like to know how you feel about this, Darren.
- 1:20:59Madam, you've got to get out of here. This is terrible.
- 1:21:01This is never... Oh, may I just get this for... Oh.
- 1:21:04See how I missed that ball. I missed that ball.
- 1:21:06I never... Here, I caught it.
- 1:21:08Oh, thank you.
- 1:21:10I'll just throw it back. You've just got to get out of here.
- 1:21:13Uh, uh...
- 1:21:16Heads up!
- 1:21:17They're furious.
- 1:21:18I'm so sorry.
- 1:21:19Uh, oh.
- 1:21:20What?
- 1:21:21If you'd tell them about the bottle of Marigans of beer.
- 1:21:24Oh, you've really confused me.
- 1:21:27Well, I'll just drink this ball.
- 1:21:34We're now in the last of the fifth inning.
- 1:21:36Mambo-Ket will face the bottom of the senator order.
- 1:21:39Brumley, Brinkman, and Ortega, and they may hit for Ortega because
- 1:21:44Ribzic is warming up in the senator bullpen.
- 1:21:47Now, I started to say earlier, Johnny Orlando was clubhouse for the Red Sox
- 1:21:51for years and years. He was there when Mel was there.
- 1:21:54One night we were playing a night game here.
- 1:21:56Mike Higgins was an old friend of Lyndon Johnson, uh, at Texan,
- 1:22:00and Mike was an outstanding athlete down there in Texas,
- 1:22:03and his brother, Ox, ran the sporting goods stores all over Texas,
- 1:22:07and he was a very close friend of Lyndon Johnson,
- 1:22:10who at that time was a United States senator from Texas.
- 1:22:14We were at the, played a game, oh, this must have been seven, eight, or nine years ago.
- 1:22:19Pitch was in there, so I called, you were with the ball club then.
- 1:22:22And one night two men came into the clubhouse after the game
- 1:22:25and asked to see Mike Higgins.
- 1:22:28And Orlando said nobody allowed in the clubhouse, which was the rule.
- 1:22:32The pitch popped up out in the shallow left field backing up a set of cellies under it.
- 1:22:38He makes the grab and there's one away.
- 1:22:40And so he said, listen, we're, uh, we're close friends of his,
- 1:22:44and also I am Senator Lyndon Johnson, and the other one was Sam Rayburn,
- 1:22:48the speaker of the house, and Orlando said, I don't care who you are,
- 1:22:51Eisenhower, who you are, out.
- 1:22:54So he kicked them both out, and every time I see him,
- 1:22:58I always remind him about the time he kicked out the future president of the United States
- 1:23:02out of the Red Sox clubhouse.
- 1:23:05Ed Brinkman up, swings and fouls it back, track one.
- 1:23:13A score of five to one, Red Sox ahead last to the fifth inning.
- 1:23:17Brinkman grounded out his first time.
- 1:23:24A pitch is ground ball to shortstop, Malzone up with it, can't get it.
- 1:23:29Peppertelli just misses on a phenomenal play.
- 1:23:33Malzone went to his left, the ball got under his glove.
- 1:23:36Malzone covered a lot of ground with flashing in front of a shortstop.
- 1:23:40Peppertelli backed him up with a trickle off his glove and nearly threw.
- 1:23:44Brinkman out, it is scored as a base hit.
- 1:23:47And now we have a pinch hitter, Joe Cunningham, is going to bat for Ortega.
- 1:23:51And now for three, Joe Cunningham.
- 1:23:57Joe Cunningham batting left, will hit for Ortega.
- 1:24:04With a runner on first, Brinkman won out, last to the fifth inning.
- 1:24:08Don Blanton games on deck.
- 1:24:11Ambo checks his runner, the pitch to left-handed Cunningham,
- 1:24:14the swing and the miss and a fastball.
- 1:24:16Cunningham came to the Senators last year with Bill Cowan going to the white side.
- 1:24:20Both veterans, first baseman.
- 1:24:22He's a slashing type of hitter.
- 1:24:25Slashes line drives to all fields.
- 1:24:28One stretch coming.
- 1:24:33Five runs, five hits for the Red Sox.
- 1:24:35One run, four hits for the Senators.
- 1:24:37The pitch is inside a ball, one and one.
- 1:24:42Also a telegram here to myself, Mel, Ned, Engineer Walker.
- 1:24:48World's a luck to you for a most successful season.
- 1:24:51Leo Clodier, baseball dinner director of Manchester, New Hampshire.
- 1:24:54I want to thank Leo for his telegram.
- 1:25:01Hello, Janitor, what's being done?
- 1:25:02Incidentally, we are on the Armed Forces radio network today around the world.
- 1:25:07And I guess this game is being carried, let's see, six hours difference in Germany.
- 1:25:12Right now it's seven minutes to nine there.
- 1:25:16They're listening to the opening of the Major League season at night.
- 1:25:20Over there many of our Miami bases around the world.
- 1:25:25One ball, one strike.
- 1:25:28Pitch is ball two the other way around over in Japan in the Far East.
- 1:25:34Early in the morning.
- 1:25:37Two balls and one strike, says Joe Cunningham.
- 1:25:41Bring them on first, one out.
- 1:25:45Two blasting games on deck.
- 1:25:47Stretched by Mambo in the pitch.
- 1:25:49Twins and misses on the fastball.
- 1:25:51Strike two. Two balls, two strikes.
- 1:26:02You don't think there aren't plenty of secret servicemen around this place.
- 1:26:06Or they're all over down here by the dugout.
- 1:26:09Two to the count.
- 1:26:13Delivery is a swing and a rest.
- 1:26:15He struck him out on the high slider.
- 1:26:17Strike three.
- 1:26:18Cunningham's out.
- 1:26:20That is strikeout number three for Mambo.
- 1:26:23Two down for the Senators.
- 1:26:25And here's a little blasting game coming up.
- 1:26:28Blast the game, it's fouled out and flied out.
- 1:26:30He is a deadly punter.
- 1:26:32He can drop that ball on a dime down the third baseline.
- 1:26:36O'Malzone moves in tight on him on the grass at third.
- 1:26:42He hit 267 last year.
- 1:26:46Ken McMullen's on deck.
- 1:26:53Ed Brinkman on first, two away.
- 1:26:57Your pitch.
- 1:26:58Ground ball, hit out to Petruchelli.
- 1:27:00Scooped it up.
- 1:27:01Fires the first, he's got him, sides out.
- 1:27:04No runs.
- 1:27:06One hit, there were no errors.
- 1:27:07One man left.
- 1:27:09And now Walker just said he's got a good arm.
- 1:27:12That's right, Al, you can fire that ball from shortstop.
- 1:27:14Down at the end of five innings, our score is the Red Sox five and the Senators one.
- 1:27:20Well, how about telling the fans about that new Red Sox yearbook, Matt?

- 1:28:48absolutely free in every copy of the Red Sox 1965 yearbook.
- 1:28:53The 65 yearbook on the cover this year is sort of a film clip sequence of Dick Raditz
- 1:28:59from center field pitching to a batter. Very well done.
- 1:29:04So take a glance at the 1965 yearbook for the Red Sox.
- 1:29:09Steve Ritzig, right-hander reliever, has come on for the Senators as the Red Sox come up on the sixth.
- 1:29:20Frank Malzone will start it off with the Red Sox in the sixth inning.
- 1:29:23Frank has walked and popped up.
- 1:29:25Frank's batting in the number seven spot this year. Malzone, Tillman, and Mamboquette.
- 1:29:31Veteran Steve Ritzig, the right-hander.
- 1:29:41So Ortega pitched five innings, allowed five hits, five runs.
- 1:29:45He was bellied for three homers by the Red Sox.
- 1:29:48He walked three and he struck out three.
- 1:29:52Malzone hits a high fly to Fairleigh Deek Center.
- 1:29:55Don Locke racing back, draws a beat on it, and hauls it in.
- 1:29:59And Deek straightaway center.
- 1:30:01One out.
- 1:30:05Here's Bob Tillman up. He reached in an air and he's rounded out to third.
- 1:30:12Mamboquette, the pitcher, coming out on deck.
- 1:30:15Five to one, the Red Sox ahead in the sixth inning.
- 1:30:21And for you fans in New England listening, we'll see you next Saturday at Fenway Park when the Red Sox meet the Orioles.
- 1:30:27Sidearm pitch is low and away to Tillman, ball one.
- 1:30:35Checking on walks, four walks Ortega gave up.
- 1:30:38A 1-0 delivery.
- 1:30:55One ball and strike to him now.
- 1:30:58Here's the 1-1 delivery.
- 1:31:00Strike called, outside corner fastball, one and two.
- 1:31:04One ball, two strikes.
- 1:31:10They play Tillman deep and toward left.
- 1:31:16Rizik double-fumps, comes in outside of ball two and two.
- 1:31:22What are the 81 degrees if you've joined us late here in the nation's capital?
- 1:31:28Brilliant, sunshiny day.
- 1:31:31Almost like a day in late June or early July.
- 1:31:36Two and two is the count to Bob Tillman.
- 1:31:40Sidearm pitch is swung on him, that's strike three. Tillman strikes out.
- 1:31:45Two down for the Red Sox.
- 1:31:47And Bill Mamboquette coming up. He has struck out and rounded out.
- 1:31:510 for two.
- 1:32:08Here's the windup in delivery.
- 1:32:10Ground ball hit to the right side. Blasting game, digs it out of the dirt, flips over to Bob Chance at first.
- 1:32:16The Red Sox are retired one, two, three in the sixth.
- 1:32:19At the end of five and a half innings, our score is the Red Sox five and the Senators one.
- 1:32:29I never have a chance to give this log a beer chance.
- 1:32:34It has that straight from the barrel of tape.
- 1:32:37In bottles, can on tap, it's great.
- 1:32:40If Scancers got the flavor, never can this flavor.
- 1:32:45Scancers to life, but not to life. Straight from the barrel of tape.
- 1:32:50That's right, that's Scancers.
- 1:32:54Yes, that's Scancers all right.
- 1:32:55The beer with a straight from the barrel taste in bottle, can, or on tap.
- 1:32:59That's the taste preferred by people who really know beer.
- 1:33:02So hi, neighbor, have a Scancers.
- 1:33:04Straight from the barrel of tape. That's right, that's Scancers.
- 1:33:19Before we move to the last of the sixth inning now, let's pause for station identification.
- 1:33:23This is the Red Sox baseball network.
- 1:33:26This is Fun Radio at 1440 on your AM dial and 107.3 on your FM band, WWAB AM and FM in Worcester, Massachusetts.
- 1:33:35The time is one minute past three o'clock at the temperature outside our studios, 42 degrees.
- 1:33:47This is Kurt Gowdy, Ned Martin, and Mel Farnell back with you in Washington, last of the sixth inning.
- 1:33:52And Ken McMullen is leading off for the Sanders. He's batting number two in their lineup, the third baseman.
- 1:33:58He has struck out and flied to left.
- 1:34:00First pitch to him is a foul ball back into the stands, strike one.
- 1:34:05McMullen's had a red hot spring training. He's had 15 games in a row in the spring.
- 1:34:17Five runs, five hits for the Red Sox. One run, four hits for the Sanders.
- 1:34:21Don Locke hit a homer for the Senators in the second.
- 1:34:25Thomas Amantia hit homers in the third. Lenny Green in the fifth for the Red Sox.
- 1:34:30The Red Sox got four big runs in the third.
- 1:34:39And the pitch is popped up to the shortstop.
- 1:34:44Rico Petracelli comes in under, makes the grab, and there's one away.
- 1:34:47And his new bride, after just a month or two, sitting down by the Red Sox dugout, watching her husband gather that one in.
- 1:34:56What a thrill that must have been for him today to open the Major League season, Mel.
- 1:35:01It's quite a treat for young Rico. Rico is a young fellow that never stops hustling.
- 1:35:07He's one that tries awfully hard. He's one of the first to the ball, one of the last to leave.
- 1:35:11And this young fellow works hard, and if work proves anything, he should be a great ball player.
- 1:35:16One out, nobody on. Here's a fellow that's given Bill Mambo cat trouble, Bob Chance.
- 1:35:21He is single and double, left-handed batter.
- 1:35:24Mambo starts him off with a slow ball outside, one and nothing.
- 1:35:29Frank Howard's on deck.
- 1:35:31We're in the last half of sixth inning.
- 1:35:37A 1-0 delivery.
- 1:35:40There's a hard ground ball to Thomas at first. He lobs it over to Mambo cat covering, and we have two down.
- 1:35:46Notice that President Johnson has a big, long piece of paper down there. It's not a scorecard.
- 1:35:52And he's passing it around, and they're all huddling on it.
- 1:35:56And then he'll point to it and lean back and say something to a couple of more of them.
- 1:36:02It's a very bipartisan box down there, by the way, both Democrats and Republicans.
- 1:36:07That may be the latest report from Vietnam, Kirk. It could be.
- 1:36:14Hey, it's on Martin's income tax.
- 1:36:18Frank Howard, up, hit it to a fourth play and walks.
- 1:36:23Here's the pitch to Howard, big right-handed batter takes a strike called, nothing and one.
- 1:36:30Two down, nobody on, last to the sixth inning.
- 1:36:33Five to one Red Sox.
- 1:36:36Oh, this Howard's thick.
- 1:36:41No balls, one strike.
- 1:36:46They're way over in that infield toward third on him.
- 1:36:49Manthee is playing almost back a second.
- 1:36:53Here's the one-strike pitch.
- 1:36:55He swings and misses on a fastball for strike two.
- 1:36:59No balls, two strikes.
- 1:37:05Mom Bouquet has walked two.
- 1:37:09He walked Kirkland in the second and Howard in the fourth.
- 1:37:15He has struck out three.
- 1:37:17It's two-strike pitch.
- 1:37:19A ground ball, the third base for Malzone and back of the bag.
- 1:37:22A long throw for him.
- 1:37:23The time of stretch is in, grabs it, and the sides retire.
- 1:37:26A slow curve ball that had Howard off his timing, and he tapped the two-hopper and back a third.
- 1:37:31A long throw by Malzone, but it got Big Howard, and the Senators are retired in the last half of sixth inning.
- 1:37:38We have three down at the end of sixth.
- 1:37:40Our score is Boston 5 and Washington 1.
- 1:37:47Now, when you head out for the day, take along a six-pack or two of Narragansett Lagerbeer and the new improved flip-top cans.
- 1:37:55You'll really appreciate these cans.
- 1:37:57Not only don't you need an opener, but they've got the safest flip-top you can get your hands on.
- 1:38:03You see the tip of the tab is curled to protect your fingers.
- 1:38:06Makes it easier to grip and safer to flip, and the keyhole opening is beveled for more comfortable drinking.
- 1:38:13Just flip, pull, and pour, and you're ready for that famous treat from the bellow taste.
- 1:38:18The taste people who really know beer like best.
- 1:38:22The next time you're off on a day's outing, make sure to take along a six-pack or two of Narragansett Lagerbeer.
- 1:38:29Hi, neighbor. Narragansett.
- 1:38:31Now in the new improved aluminum flip-top can.
- 1:38:36This plate hi, neighbor, for us in the background.
- 1:38:39Very accommodating.
- 1:38:40Narragansett theme song.
- 1:38:44We're in the seventh inning now, ladies and gentlemen.
- 1:38:47With the top of the red-stock batting order up, Rico Petticelli will start it off.
- 1:38:51He has struck out twice and walked.
- 1:38:53He's facing veteran Steve Ribzic.
- 1:38:56Petticelli, Green, and Yastremski.
- 1:39:00Pitch to the switch hitter is cut on.
- 1:39:02There's a long drive in the deep center.
- 1:39:04Lock backing up, back, back, under, and grabs it out there in a warning pass.
- 1:39:08And the youngster hit that ball a long way, but the straightaway deep center.
- 1:39:13One out.
- 1:39:14He has some power in the minor leagues now.
- 1:39:16He hit a lot of runs in and home runs two years ago.
- 1:39:20Rico will jump up now and then and hit the long ball for you,
- 1:39:23both from the right side and left side of the plate.
- 1:39:25He's a little fellow, but has a lot of power.
- 1:39:28Of course, his problem now is making contact a little more often.
- 1:39:32And I'm sure by playing every day he will improve that.
- 1:39:35When he greens up, he pops a short, ground it out, and hit a home run down the right-field line.
- 1:39:40Batting left-handed, the pitch is ball one.
- 1:39:45Other games are underway.
- 1:39:48The American League, Minnesota is leading the Yankees one-and-nothing at the end of an inning and a half,
- 1:39:52bouting against Cotts.
- 1:39:55They're afraid they'd start that one in the snow this time of year up there.
- 1:39:58The pitch is over for a strike call one-and-one.
- 1:40:01Detroit plays Kansas City tonight.
- 1:40:03Cleveland's at Los Angeles tonight.
- 1:40:05Chicago and Baltimore hope for their season tomorrow at Baltimore.
- 1:40:12One ball, one strike to Lenny Green.
- 1:40:14One out, nobody on.
- 1:40:15Green hits a drive down the right-field line again.
- 1:40:18This ball is another home run.
- 1:40:22A line drive by Lenny Green right down the line into the corner.
- 1:40:28And Green has now hit two homers in this game.
- 1:40:33He was the second leading batter in spring training.
- 1:40:37The Twins and the Angels thought he was washed up, but he's out to disprove that fact.
- 1:40:42Larry Claflin was kidding him in the dugout today.
- 1:40:45He said, Lenny, the way you've been looking, you've got a chance to be the comeback man of the year.
- 1:40:50Well, if one day does it, he is.
- 1:40:52He's had two home runs already today.
- 1:40:55Pitch is low, ball one.
- 1:40:57Four home runs by the Red Sox in this opening game, and you can't credit Fenway Park for this one.
- 1:41:02Lenny seems though he found a target down in the right-field corner.
- 1:41:06Those two home runs that were hit weren't any more than five yards apart.
- 1:41:10One out, nobody on.
- 1:41:12Yastremski's grounded out and walked twice.
- 1:41:14Six to one Red Sox.
- 1:41:16Yastremski takes a fastball over, strike called.
- 1:41:19They've got one, two, three, four.
- 1:41:24Four lefties and five right-handers in the line.
- 1:41:26It's good balance in that batting order right now.
- 1:41:29A one-one delivery.
- 1:41:31There's a high fly by Yastremski down the left-field line.
- 1:41:34Howard chasing it, curving toward the fans, and dropping foul out of play.
- 1:41:39One ball, one strike.
- 1:41:41Steve Ridzik throws quite differently from the last time that I saw him,
- 1:41:45when with the Phillies Steve was an overhand pitcher.
- 1:41:48However, since then he has hurt his arm and is now throwing more from the side
- 1:41:52and has added a little jerky deceptive motion to his delivery.
- 1:41:58One ball, two strikes to Carl Yastremski.
- 1:42:00One out, nobody on.
- 1:42:01Seventh inning.
- 1:42:03Six to one Red Sox ahead.
- 1:42:07Ridzik comes in.
- 1:42:10Yastremski takes it inside.
- 1:42:11Ball two, strike two.
- 1:42:19Three of the homers, one by Mantia, two by Green, have been with nobody on.
- 1:42:22Thomas hit one with two on.
- 1:42:25And Locke hit one with nobody on for the centers.
- 1:42:27There's a swing and a miss.
- 1:42:28He strikes out on a fastball.
- 1:42:30Two down.
- 1:42:31A low fastball around his knees.
- 1:42:34Conigliero, a single left, single right, and grounded out.
- 1:42:37He's two out of three.
- 1:42:40Over the National League, the Dodgers are leading the Mets three-nothing into three.
- 1:42:43Drysdale against Jackson.
- 1:42:45Willie Davis and Drysdale have hit homers.
- 1:42:48Giants and Pirates, no score at the end of six.
- 1:42:50Marischal against Ville.
- 1:42:52Milwaukee and Cincinnati, no score at the end of an inning and a half.
- 1:42:55Flanninger against O'Toole.
- 1:42:57Conigliero hits a foul off the fist on the ground down the third base line, strike one.
- 1:43:02St. Louis playing at Chicago.
- 1:43:04Philadelphia at Houston in the new dome tonight.
- 1:43:08Two down and a seventh inning for the Red Sox, nobody on.
- 1:43:13One strike to Conigliero.
- 1:43:17Lidzic double pumps and then comes in.
- 1:43:20And there's a long smash by Conigliero.
- 1:43:23Way up, midway in the upper deck.
- 1:43:26What a clap by Conigliero.
- 1:43:30Tony, who hit 24 last year and missed seven weeks of the season with two broken bones.
- 1:43:37It's that one, midway in the upper deck.
- 1:43:40And the Red Sox have hit five home runs today.
- 1:43:44Conigliero now has three hits in this first game.
- 1:43:49How could they leave him off that list of young stars in baseball?
- 1:43:53What foul we're seeing today, Kurt.
- 1:43:55I don't know what Billy Herman told the boys before the game,
- 1:43:58but I sure hope that he continues to repeat.
- 1:44:01Lee Thomas takes the strike.
- 1:44:05One, two, three, four, five homers by the Red Sox.
- 1:44:08They're ahead seven and one and they're still buzzing.
- 1:44:11Conigliero's smash was longer than Locke's.
- 1:44:13It was halfway in the upper deck in left field.
- 1:44:16Here's the one strike fresh.
- 1:44:17He knocks Thomas down.
- 1:44:20Thomas goes down.
- 1:44:22It's thrown right at his head.
- 1:44:23He dropped the bat.
- 1:44:25One ball, one strike.
- 1:44:28This Red Sox power today reminds me of the William Stevens,
- 1:44:32go-pulling door error.
- 1:44:35In every cut they present a threat for the opposing pitcher.
- 1:44:39One ball, one strike.
- 1:44:44Two down.
- 1:44:46Seven to one Red Sox in the seventh.
- 1:44:48Thomas takes outside.
- 1:44:50Ball two.
- 1:44:51You know, Thomas, two years ago, with the Angels,
- 1:44:53had a great year when he played first base.
- 1:44:56He had 24 homers, knocked in over 100 runs, hit 290 something.
- 1:45:01Boy, they could duplicate that at first.
- 1:45:02Wouldn't that be something in that lineup?
- 1:45:04Of course it is.
- 1:45:05Of course it is.
- 1:45:06It's a mighty big word in sports.
- 1:45:07There's a curve in there for a strike, two and two.
- 1:45:10Two balls, two strikes.
- 1:45:14Just look down some.
- 1:45:16Right over there in that presidential box is pointing up in left field
- 1:45:19where Conigliero hit that tremendous home run.
- 1:45:22Two balls and two strikes.
- 1:45:29Two down, bases empty.
- 1:45:32A two-two delivery.
- 1:45:33He struck him out on a high fastball.
- 1:45:35The Red Sox are retired.
- 1:45:37But in the seventh they had two runs, two hits.
- 1:45:41A line drive homer by Green and a king-size clout by Conigliero,
- 1:45:47way in the upper deck in left field.
- 1:45:49There were no errors and nobody left at the end of six and a half
- 1:45:52with a seventh inning stretch on.
- 1:45:54The score is the Red Sox seven and the Senators one.
- 1:46:04What's the name of this song?
- 1:46:09It's a song of service.
- 1:46:10So good it's guaranteed to every customer every time.
- 1:46:14For business, for pleasure, in any kind of weather.
- 1:46:18Naturally, I mean Atlantic Red Ball Dealer service.
- 1:46:22When you want to go places and do things, what a pleasure your driving can be.
- 1:46:29For quality products and top-notch service, your Red Ball Dealer is the man to see.
- 1:46:37Every Atlantic Red Ball Dealer will always clean your windshield,
- 1:46:40weather permitting, and offer to check the oil or you'll get a $2 gift certificate
- 1:46:44for any Atlantic service or product except gasoline.
- 1:46:47This offer may vary in some states, but Atlantic Red Ball Dealer service never varies.
- 1:46:52The name of the song?
- 1:46:53Atlantic, keep your car on the go, go, go, go, keep on the go, here's Atlantic.
- 1:47:04We're going now to the last of the seventh inning.
- 1:47:07Bill Mambo-Ked will face Don Locke, Willie Kirkland, and Mike Brumley.
- 1:47:11Seven to one, Boston leading Washington, play-by-play by Ned Martin.
- 1:47:15And your healer, Don Locke.
- 1:47:21Don Locke leading off against Mambo-Ked.
- 1:47:24Senators have just four hits in the ball game.
- 1:47:26Locke has the biggest home run in the second inning, accounting for the Senators' one run.
- 1:47:31Takes a high pitch for ball one.
- 1:47:35Red Sox have seven hits.
- 1:47:37Five of them have been homers.
- 1:47:39Two other hits have been singles by Conigliaro.
- 1:47:43Pitch to Locke, misses inside.
- 1:47:46Two balls, no strikes.
- 1:47:50There was a scuffling around down the presidential box.
- 1:47:53Everybody was getting up.
- 1:47:54There was a bottom of the seventh and the Washington fans stood up.
- 1:47:58So the president stood up.
- 1:48:01And all around him as the cameras word and clicked.
- 1:48:06Two holes account.
- 1:48:07Locke swings and misses. Two balls, one strike.
- 1:48:14The play-by-play of 43,554.
- 1:48:2043,554 here today.
- 1:48:23Locke is out there with a general turn in Washington.
- 1:48:27Locke takes a strike on the outside corner of Beauty, a slider, and the count is two and two.
- 1:48:32This is the largest opening day crowd for D.C. Stadium, incidentally.
- 1:48:36And of course, definitely the largest crowd we've ever seen down here with the Red Sox playing.
- 1:48:42Mambo's 2-2 pitch.
- 1:48:44Misses low and away, ball three.
- 1:48:47Three and two.
- 1:48:49Locke is homered and fly to center.
- 1:48:51He'll be followed by Kirkland and Brumley.
- 1:48:54Mambo Ketch, been just about as good as he's had to be.
- 1:48:58He's got just three strikes out. He's walked two.
- 1:49:01He's had the ball in the strike zone.
- 1:49:04Making them hit. They've been popping up a lot on him today.
- 1:49:08So his fastball is hopping some.
- 1:49:12Locke swings and misses strike three.
- 1:49:18One away in the seventh.
- 1:49:21Four strikeouts for Mambo.
- 1:49:25Willie Kirkland has walked, and he popped up into that double play in the fourth inning, the infield fly,
- 1:49:33with two men on in which Malzone dropped the ball, but then through to second,
- 1:49:37Manatee had tagged the runner Chance who had moved off second base.
- 1:49:42And that was the only double play of the game.
- 1:49:46Pitch to Kirkland, and Willie lets it go down low, ball one.
- 1:49:53Earl Wilson will pitch the game day after tomorrow here,
- 1:49:56and right-hander Bus Narum is scheduled to go for the Senators.
- 1:50:00Those same two will work on the weekend at Fenway.
- 1:50:03There's a high pop fly.
- 1:50:05First base side, Lee Thomas near the bag, the wind blowing it now,
- 1:50:08and Manatee makes the catch as Thomas gave way to Felix who had a better bead on the ball.
- 1:50:14Kirkland pops to Manatee, and they're two down, and Mike Brumley comes in 0 for 2.
- 1:50:20Minnesota picks up another runner in second.
- 1:50:22They lead the Yankees 2-0 at the end of 2.
- 1:50:24The Cardinals are out in front of Chicago Cubs, 5-0 at the end of an inning and a half.
- 1:50:29It's the Giants nothing and Pittsburgh nothing.
- 1:50:32The end of 6-1-1 half inning, fine pitchers duel.
- 1:50:35Gibson going for the, or let's see, the Giants and Pittsburgh Pirates.
- 1:50:39Marischal for the Giants.
- 1:50:43Pitch to Brumley is on the corner, called strike one.
- 1:50:50And Bob Beale going for the Pirates in that shutout so far.
- 1:50:54Milwaukee Cincinnati scoreless after 2, Brumley takes a pitch inside, ball one.
- 1:51:00And as Kirk told you, the Dodgers leading the Mets 5-0.
- 1:51:04Now at the end of 3-1-1 half innings, there's the Dodgers, got a few home runs going for them.
- 1:51:09Drysdale has helped his own cause with a two-run over.
- 1:51:13Pitch outside, ball two, two balls, one strike.
- 1:51:18Chicago and Baltimore will open tomorrow.
- 1:51:21And of course tonight in the American League is Detroit at Kansas City and Cleveland out on the coast against the Angels.
- 1:51:32Mambo winds fires, Brumley pops it up to the left side, Mal's going down the line, waiting.
- 1:51:37He's in foul ground now, he makes the catch.
- 1:51:39And it's an easy 1-2-3 inning for Bill Mambo-Ked, who now has retired eight in a row.
- 1:51:45Stepping across the score at the end of 7 is the Red Sox, 7-man, Washington 1.
- 1:51:53Say, giving your car every chance to perform at its best, well you're not if you allow damaging deposits to interfere with the efficient operation of the carburetor.
- 1:52:02It's a known fact that some gasoline leave deposits around the carburetor throttle plate.
- 1:52:08And as they build up, these deposits can cause rough idling, wasted gasoline, and stalling.
- 1:52:14But that won't happen when you use Atlantic Imperial, the clean carburetor gasoline.
- 1:52:19Even if deposits have already accumulated in the throttle plate area, a few tankfuls of Atlantic Imperial will dissolve them and wash them harmlessly away.
- 1:52:29And they won't return so long as you continue to use Atlantic Imperial.
- 1:52:34So if your engine doesn't run as smoothly as you'd like, maybe you're not giving it a chance.
- 1:52:40See what happens when you use Atlantic Imperial, the gasoline that cleans your carburetor as you drive and keeps it clean.
- 1:52:53Felix Van Peele leading away for the Red Sox on the top of the eighth.
- 1:53:01In the Red Sox bullpen, just in case, right-hander Jack LeMay, but left-hander Arnold Earley are throwing.
- 1:53:08Red Sox with a fine six-run bulge right now.
- 1:53:12Pitch to Mantia moves outside, ball one.
- 1:53:16Felix is flying to left, hit a home run, and grounded a third.
- 1:53:20He's pulled the ball today.
- 1:53:22This is one of his favorite ballparks.
- 1:53:24Hit three homers here last year, has one already this season.
- 1:53:28Ritzig moves outside with a flat curve and it's ball two.
- 1:53:32Two balls, no strikes.
- 1:53:36As Mel Parnell pointed out, Ritzig has changed his style of pitching.
- 1:53:40This is a fellow of Mel that is a hard worker.
- 1:53:42He was a good relief pitcher for Washington last year.
- 1:53:44He and Ron Klein were their hardest workers.
- 1:53:49He'll battle you.
- 1:53:51Throw to Mantia, gets a strike over.
- 1:53:55Two balls and one strike.
- 1:54:01Felix Picadup with Malzahna on deck.
- 1:54:05Ritzig winds, throws, and misses inside, ball three.
- 1:54:10Red Sox ahead seven to one by dint of a three-run homer and a bases-empty homer in the third.
- 1:54:17A home run in the fifth and two home runs in the seventh.
- 1:54:19Homers are counting for all of their runs.
- 1:54:25Wind up and pitch, strike called on the inside slice, the count is three and two.
- 1:54:31Three balls, two strikes.
- 1:54:37Ritzig takes the sign.
- 1:54:42Caulfield laying around the left on Mantia.
- 1:54:45Ground ball the third, cooped up by McMullin.
- 1:54:48Trolley's his throw to first.
- 1:54:49In time, there's one away.
- 1:54:51Second time, Mantia's grounded out the third base.
- 1:54:55And Malzahna comes up.
- 1:54:57Walks off the short and flies very deep to center.
- 1:55:01This McMullin plays a, they worried about his third base play.
- 1:55:05They figured that they got his bat instead of a glove.
- 1:55:08They gave up John Kennedy to the Dodgers, who is a superior fielder to McMullin.
- 1:55:13But they say that McMullin will do the job around third.
- 1:55:16Malzahna tries to get away from a pitch and it bounces foul off his bat down the third base line.
- 1:55:23Looking at McMullin, Mel, and a couple of those ground balls, he takes a little windup to get it over.
- 1:55:27He's got a good arm, but he takes a little time to get it away.
- 1:55:29Yes, he takes a full step before throwing.
- 1:55:32He feels the ball, takes one step in the direction he's throwing,
- 1:55:36and tries to get a little more body to his throw.
- 1:55:39Well, I guess a third baseman can afford that better than anybody else.
- 1:55:43Anyway, he gets the ball faster, hit at him, and has a little time.
- 1:55:48Pitch to Malzahna, swung on and missed, strike one.
- 1:55:57Malzahna in what must be about his eighth opener for the Red Sox.
- 1:56:08Steve Rydzik kicks, throws, and Frank peels it foul back.
- 1:56:13Nothing and two.
- 1:56:16Minnesota leading the Yankees 2-0 at the end of 2-1 half now,
- 1:56:19and Pittsburgh to nuts going, pardon me, in the seventh.
- 1:56:24Giants and Pirates are nothing-nothing at the end of seven innings.
- 1:56:31Left-hander Frank Kreutzer is warming up in the Senator bullpen now.
- 1:56:38Malzahna looks at a pitch, breaking low and away.
- 1:56:42One ball, two strikes.
- 1:56:45Senator Outfield around the left on Frank, where they always play him.
- 1:56:49I hear every club that he faces just about,
- 1:56:51unless he's against an overpoweringly fast pitcher,
- 1:56:53they'll play him as a dead-pole hitter.
- 1:56:56Second base in the blasting game is shading the bag a couple of steps.
- 1:57:00Malzahna swings and misses, strike three.
- 1:57:03He's fooled on a breaking pitch.
- 1:57:05Rydzik gets his fourth strikeout since coming in there.
- 1:57:09It's been either feast or famine with him.
- 1:57:11He's had four strikeouts and given up two homers
- 1:57:14in the two and two-thirds that he's worked.
- 1:57:18He's probably a little tough on the right-hander.
- 1:57:20It appears that he would be very tough to pick up
- 1:57:22with that jerky motion in his delivery.
- 1:57:26Powerball by Bob Tillman, strike one.
- 1:57:28That's right, he's tough to, he looks faster than he is actually.
- 1:57:32That's true.
- 1:57:33Malzahna was fooled the first time he looked at Rydzik,
- 1:57:35and of course Tillman was also fooled on the last pitch.
- 1:57:39Bob started into the pitch, and at the last minute
- 1:57:41it appeared to be a self-defense swing.
- 1:57:44Tillman wraps the ground ball toward short.
- 1:57:46Cut off by McMullen, the third baseman.
- 1:57:48Kansas throws in plenty of time.
- 1:57:50Good play by McMullen, and the Red Sox are down in order in the eighth inning.
- 1:57:54The end of seven and a half, the score is Red Sox 7 and Washington 1.
- 1:58:00Going to the bottom of the eighth inning now.
- 1:58:03Eddie Brinkman will lead off for the Senators,
- 1:58:06and looking down at the on-deck circle it looks like Jim King,
- 1:58:10who will pinch hit for the pitcher Rydzik.
- 1:58:15So they'll pinch hit the left-handed hitting Jim King for Steve Rydzik,
- 1:58:19then go to the top of the order.
- 1:58:22Rydzik pitched three innings while he was in there.
- 1:58:32Eddie Brinkman, right-handed hitting shortstop, is always one for two.
- 1:58:35He had an infield single in the fifth.
- 1:58:37Mambo Kett kicks and throws, and his pitch is right in there called strike one.
- 1:58:43Brinkman, one of the classier fielding shortstops in the league,
- 1:58:48and the Senators figure that if he hits 240 or 250 for them, he'll help them.
- 1:58:57He has had an error today, which is a rarity for him.
- 1:59:00He hits the short, shot the short, one-handed by Petracelli, throws the first inside.
- 1:59:05Rico towards the hole, made a couple of steps.
- 1:59:08It was not that he went so far, but that he got a tough hop
- 1:59:11because it bounced right in front of him and off to the side.
- 1:59:15That's right.
- 1:59:16Rico shows a very quick hand that he possesses.
- 1:59:18That ball was hit real sharp.
- 1:59:20He was playing to go through the hole, and when the ball made contact at the infield,
- 1:59:25it bounced to the rear of Rico, and the quick hand, he reached back,
- 1:59:28spared the ball, and a perfect throw to Lee Thomas to retire the hitter.
- 1:59:32Jim King, the pinch hitter, lost the first pitch high in the air in the right field.
- 1:59:36Thomas back, Mantia back, Kanigale arrow in, and Tony C. makes the catch about five yards in fair.
- 1:59:43Jim King, pinch hitting for Steve Rizik, hits the first pitch up in the air,
- 1:59:48and Kanigale arrow made the catch.
- 1:59:50Two down quickly in the ninth, and Mambo is a machine out there.
- 1:59:57In the final of the eighth inning, said the top of the ninth, it's the eighth inning.
- 2:00:03Two gone, blasting game is the hitter.
- 2:00:10Hole for three.
- 2:00:14He is fouled out, fly to center, and grounded out.
- 2:00:20Mambo delivers.
- 2:00:22Ground ball hit toward Mantia.
- 2:00:24Felix up with it, throws him out, and another easy inning for Mambo.
- 2:00:28Let's see, that's nine, ten, eleven men in a row he's retired.
- 2:00:34Nothing across in the eighth inning.
- 2:00:36The score at the end of eight innings of play is Boston 7 and Washington 1.
- 2:00:43Opening day at Fenway Park.
- 2:00:45Remember coming up on the 17th, this coming Saturday, Easter weekend,
- 2:00:48and a big weekend for all of you to get out, take the family.
- 2:00:51You've got Saturday and Sunday afternoon games against the Baltimore Orioles,
- 2:00:56and then a Patriots Day doubleheader against these Washington Senators,
- 2:01:00all in the afternoon at the four-game home stand before the Red Sox hit the road.
- 2:01:05Red Sox ticket offices open during the week from nine to five at Fenway Park.
- 2:01:11At eight thirty on Friday night for your convenience.
- 2:01:14So make plans to be there Saturday, especially opening day against the Orioles.
- 2:01:19The game time will be at two fifteen.
- 2:01:21The Harvard Band will be performing along with the conducted by Arthur Siedler
- 2:01:25of the Boston Pops.
- 2:01:27Jerry Vail will sing the national anthem, one of the Wings and Zone,
- 2:01:30and Big Dilling coming up at Fenway starting Saturday.
- 2:01:34We'll see you there.
- 2:01:35Right now let's pause for face identification.
- 2:01:38This is the Red Sox baseball network.
- 2:01:40This is WAAB AM&FM in Worcester, Massachusetts.
- 2:01:44You're on radio at 1440 where we play the name game, and your first clue will be
- 2:01:49coming your way at fifteen minutes past the hour of four o'clock with a fifty-three dollar jackpot.
- 2:01:59Left-hander Frank Kreitzer is coming on the pitch.
- 2:02:03All the Washington Senators as we move to the top of the ninth,
- 2:02:07with the Red Sox having seven runs, seven hits, and no errors.
- 2:02:11In one run, four hits and one error.
- 2:02:14All seven Red Sox runs as a result, directly or indirectly, of homers.
- 2:02:18They've got five homers today.
- 2:02:20Two by Lenny Green, one by Kenigley Arrow, one by Thomas, and one by Mancia.
- 2:02:25Thomas' home run came with two men on.
- 2:02:28And the Washington run also as a result of a homer.
- 2:02:31That was by John Locke in the second inning.
- 2:02:35Steve Rydzik went three innings in relief, gave up two hits and two runs.
- 2:02:39They were both homers.
- 2:02:41Walked nobody, struck out four, and Frank Kreitzer, who used to belong to the Red Sox,
- 2:02:46came over as the throw-in pitcher on the scour and deal, along with Joe Cunningham,
- 2:02:52will pitch the top of the ninth.
- 2:02:54Kreitzer, who used to belong to the Red Sox organization,
- 2:02:58pitched briefly with the Red Sox and now with the Washington Senators.
- 2:03:03First man he'll face will be the pitcher Bill Mambo-Kett.
- 2:03:06Mambo then cut for Selle and Green, and we're ready to go, Kirk.
- 2:03:14Mambo has struck out, grounded out twice.
- 2:03:16He's 0 for 3.
- 2:03:18And he should get a good hand for the beautiful game he pitched here on opening day
- 2:03:23when he stepped into that batter's box.
- 2:03:26At the end of eight innings, the Red Sox, seven runs, seven hits, and no errors.
- 2:03:30The Senators have one run, four hits, and one error.
- 2:03:34Letting Kreitzer take some extra warm-up pitches.
- 2:03:42No game tomorrow.
- 2:03:43We'll be broadcasting from here on Wednesday afternoon.
- 2:03:46No game Thursday and Friday.
- 2:03:48The Red Sox will be at home Saturday against Baltimore.
- 2:03:54And there's the hand for Mambo-Kett as he's announced to the crowd.
- 2:04:02Throw left-hander, face to the right-handed batter.
- 2:04:06First pitch, a swing and a miss on a fastball for strike one.
- 2:04:16Kreitzer last year won two and lost six with Washington.
- 2:04:18He'd won three and lost one with the White Sox.
- 2:04:21He's high and wide with that one.
- 2:04:24One ball, one strike.
- 2:04:31Bob Hefner and Jerry Richie, Jay Richie are warming up in the Red Sox bullpen.
- 2:04:37I think they're just working out though.
- 2:04:39The 1-1 delivery is a curve over for a strike called the Mambo-Kett.
- 2:04:43One ball, two strikes.
- 2:04:50The base is empty as Mambo-Kett leads off in the ninth.
- 2:04:57A 1-2 pitch is high for ball two.
- 2:05:02Two and two.
- 2:05:08Minnesota's leading the Yankees now.
- 2:05:10It's two to nothing at the end of three and a half innings.
- 2:05:15Here's a 2-2 pitch.
- 2:05:17Sextree calls.
- 2:05:19Mambo-Kett knew he just turned around and walked away.
- 2:05:23It's a real pitcher's duel going on at Pittsburgh between Marischal and Veale.
- 2:05:27No score between the Giants and Pirates at the end of eight.
- 2:05:31Cardinals lead the Cubs five to two at the end of two.
- 2:05:35The Dodgers six, the Mets one at the end of four and a half.
- 2:05:40Rico Petruchelli now batting right-handed,
- 2:05:42taps the ground ball foul to the right of home plate for strike one.
- 2:05:46He struck out twice and hit a long fly ball to center field and walked.
- 2:05:53One out, nobody on.
- 2:05:57Lenny Green's on deck.
- 2:06:04Chrysler is the third pitcher of the game for the Senators.
- 2:06:07A foul on the high curve back out of plate strike two.
- 2:06:12The first five innings, Rizik pitched three innings.
- 2:06:24Ortega threw three home run balls and Rizik threw two.
- 2:06:28Two strikes, in comes the pitch.
- 2:06:31He fouls it back out of play.
- 2:06:33A no ball, two strike count to Rico Petruchelli.
- 2:06:44One out, nobody on.
- 2:06:50All right, Chrysler to the left-hander with a big high kick,
- 2:06:53throws and strikes him out.
- 2:06:55That's the third time Petruchelli struck out.
- 2:06:57Brumley drops the ball, picks it up, throws it down to chance.
- 2:07:00We have two down and Lenny Green up, has popped the short,
- 2:07:03grounded out and hit two home runs in almost the same identical spot.
- 2:07:08Line drives right into the right field corner.
- 2:07:12Green getting a hand.
- 2:07:22I wonder if he can make it three, Mel.
- 2:07:28Left hand, a little tougher for him right now.
- 2:07:30Here's a pitch to Green over his head for ball one.
- 2:07:34He was ducking under that one.
- 2:07:36That's one he'll never hit out of here, Kirk.
- 2:07:38That pitch is behind you.
- 2:07:42One ball, no strikes.
- 2:07:44Two down, nobody on here in the ninth inning.
- 2:07:53A one-oh pitch to him.
- 2:07:54Green takes a strike call.
- 2:07:56One ball, one strike.
- 2:07:59The Senators in their last bid in the last of the ninth will have
- 2:08:02McMullen, Chance, and Howard up.
- 2:08:07A one-one pitch to Lenny Green outside for ball two.
- 2:08:11Two and one.
- 2:08:17Two down, bases empty.
- 2:08:23Green hits out of a slight crouch.
- 2:08:25He swings and misses on a fastball for strike two.
- 2:08:29Two balls and two strikes.
- 2:08:31Kreitzer can throw hard.
- 2:08:33He's a hard-throwing left-hander.
- 2:08:35He went from the Red Sox organization.
- 2:08:37He was drafted by Chicago, and they traded him over here to Washington.
- 2:08:42The two-two delivery.
- 2:08:44Now back, of course they have two great left-handers already in that Chicago staff.
- 2:08:48Gary Peters and Juan Bizarro.
- 2:08:53I wouldn't mind having them.
- 2:08:55We can use them.
- 2:08:56One's a 20-game winner.
- 2:08:57They're there at 19.
- 2:09:00Two balls, two strikes.
- 2:09:04He pitches a foul ball.
- 2:09:06He poured a fastball in on him, and he just got a piece of it and fouled it up against the screen.
- 2:09:12Throw the count two and two.
- 2:09:22Two, three.
- 2:09:30The two-two delivery is a strike three.
- 2:09:32Swinging Kreitzer struck out the side.
- 2:09:35And that's all for the Red Sox in the top of the ninth inning.
- 2:09:39At the end of eight and a half, it's the Red Sox seven and the Senators one.
- 2:09:47Those 1927 cards were great in their day.
- 2:09:51They had good motor oil in 1947, too.
- 2:09:56And as engines were improved year after year,
- 2:10:01Atlantic developed finer motor oils to protect them.
- 2:10:05Now comes the finest, new Atlantic Imperial motor oil.
- 2:10:15The first oil so good, Atlantic has given it the Imperial name and shield.
- 2:10:21Today's driving conditions increase the amount of dirt and sludge that build up inside your engine to interfere with performance.
- 2:10:28But new Atlantic Imperial motor oil holds dirt and sludge in suspension, helps keep it off engine parts.
- 2:10:35None of the new highly publicized motor oils can protect your engine better than new Atlantic Imperial motor oil.
- 2:10:55Last of the ninth inning, Bill Mambokeh trying to go the distance here in his opening game.
- 2:11:02Has given up four hits in the first eight innings, one run.
- 2:11:05That was a home run by Don Locke in the second.
- 2:11:08And Mambokeh in the ninth will face Ken McMullen, Bob Chance, and Frank Howard.
- 2:11:13The number two, three, and four hitters in the Washington lineup.
- 2:11:20Same lineup defensively.
- 2:11:24That's about the best defensive lineup the Red Sox have.
- 2:11:27That's why they've started the season.
- 2:11:29Try to strengthen the defense.
- 2:11:32So there are no changes there.
- 2:11:33They don't have to platoon for any one late in the game.
- 2:11:40Here's a pitcher that's in there for a strike call.
- 2:11:42Nothing in one.
- 2:11:46Now President Johnson's still here and Vice President Humphreys, they haven't had too much to excite them from the home crowd today.
- 2:11:54But they've seen six home runs in this game.
- 2:11:58They won strike delivery, foul ball, and I know one thing, they all got out and got some nice air today.
- 2:12:05It's better than being inside there in that White House today.
- 2:12:08Uh-huh. That old stuffy White House. Isn't it nice to be out here in this fresh air?
- 2:12:13Today was a beautiful day for it.
- 2:12:20Two strikes to McMullen.
- 2:12:28He's leading off last to the ninth inning. The two-strike pitch to him.
- 2:12:32There's a long blast. That one is out of here and it is a home run for McMullen into the Red Sox bullpen.
- 2:12:40We're at the end of the ball.
- 2:13:08Bob Chance up. Takes eye on outside. Ball one. He's single, double, and ground it out.
- 2:13:21Somebody just brought a youngster, a boy about seven or eight years old, and sat him down there next to President Johnson.
- 2:13:31They want no pitch. Swings and hits a high foul over by the Red Sox dugout. It may be playable. Mel Jones over there and grabs it right on the top step of the Red Sox dugout.
- 2:13:41One away.
- 2:13:44Here's Frank Howard coming up now. He's hit into the fourth play, walked, and ground it out.
- 2:14:00Howard, big strong right-hander, hit into the fourth play. First time up. And then grabbed the third again in the sixth, so he's hit that ball on the ground twice to third.
- 2:14:09Bombo overhands him. He hits a towering pop-up. That might have hit the dome in Houston.
- 2:14:15Waiting for it, Petticelli gives way to Mancie as the wind blows it away. That might have tested that new dome. That was a mile up in the air.
- 2:14:23Howard pops up. There are two down now, and the batter is Don Locke, who's hit a home run, flying out, and struck out.
- 2:14:31Seven home runs in this game. Five by the Red Sox, two by the Senators. All of them with nobody on except Lee Thomas, who hit one with two on.
- 2:14:41Seven to two Red Sox. Last of the ninth inning.
- 2:14:46We have our first extra inning game of the season. The Giants and Pirates are in the tenth inning, no score over at Pittsburgh.
- 2:14:53All right, here's the pitch to Don Locke. Locke takes it, a strike called. He was bending away, and a slow curve came in there and ticked that inside corner.
- 2:15:04Rick Raddatz is warming up right now for the Red Sox. Willie Kirkland on deck for the Senators. Two down.
- 2:15:17One strike pitch. Swings and fouls a fastball back out of play. Strike two. Nothing and two.
- 2:15:30Two strikes, two down. 43,554 attending this game. Paid attendance.
- 2:15:44Always a few freebies. Two strike count.
- 2:15:52Pitch to Locke. Outside, try to get him to go for a wide slider. He wouldn't do it. One ball, two strikes.
- 2:16:04Minnesota leading the Yanks now four to nothing at the end of four. Here's the one, two pitch. Outside again, ball two, strike two to Don Locke.
- 2:16:14We'll be on the air Wednesday. Red Sox and Senators, Earl Wilson will be pitching for the Red Sox.
- 2:16:23And Buster Naram for the Senators will be on a 125 on this station Wednesday afternoon.
- 2:16:28A two and two pitch. Not a ball to the mound. Mambo Kett has it. There's the throw to first.
- 2:16:34Mambo Kett goes all the way. Lee Thomas flips him the ball, congratulates him as the Red Sox, in very impressive fashion,
- 2:16:41have won their opening game of the 1965 season. They had strong pitching today by a rejuvenated Mambo Kett.
- 2:16:50They had five home runs. They stole two bases. They had a lot of zip-bots there and they looked like a good ball club,
- 2:16:57which you always do when you get a combination of pitching and batting.
- 2:17:01We'll be back with a wrap-up right after this message.
- 2:17:05Perseverance is a remarkable quality.
- 2:17:07Perseverance?
- 2:17:08It certainly is.
- 2:17:09Think of the great perseverers of all time.
- 2:17:11Robert Bruce and the Spider.
- 2:17:13White Robert Fulton and the Steamboat.
- 2:17:15James Watt and the Tea Cattle. Thomas Edison and the Electric Light.
- 2:17:18Ephraim Twipple and the Red Ball.
- 2:17:20Ephraim who and the what?
- 2:17:22Ephraim Twipple and the Red Ball.
- 2:17:24Heath is one of the truly great perseverers. For years he's been keeping everlastingly at it.
- 2:17:28Keeping at what?
- 2:17:29At his dogged pursuit of a free tank full of gasoline from his Atlantic Red Ball dealer.
- 2:17:33Let me explain. If your Atlantic Red Ball dealer ever forgets to clean your windshield, weather permitting of course,
- 2:17:38or if he forgets to offer to check the oil, your gasoline purchase is free.
- 2:17:42Now this offer may vary in some states, but I might add that Red Ball dealers don't often forget.
- 2:17:47Ephraim Twipple is lost.
- 2:17:49Oh, he's won. Well it's true he's never gotten a free tank full, but he's got the cleanest windshield in town.
- 2:17:54And you will too, if you persevere in driving in for guaranteed Atlantic Red Ball service with its great gasoline.
- 2:18:00You'll be thankful for a tank full.
- 2:18:03Even if you have to pay for it.
- 2:18:05Thank you.
- 2:18:11So the first one's in the books, and the Red Sox here before President Johnson.
- 2:18:16Defeated Washington 7-2 on a gorgeous sunny afternoon in the nation's capital.
- 2:18:23Before Ned Martin wraps it up officially for us, let's get Mel Farnell coming in on the game.
- 2:18:28Well the highlight of today's game was the pitching of Billy Mambo-Kett in the long ball power of the Red Sox.
- 2:18:34Billy was in command all the way, had a good fast ball, a good curve ball, makes these pitches well.
- 2:18:39Stayed ahead of the hitter and made the hitter hit his pitch.
- 2:18:42The long ball power of the Red Sox was outstanding with Lenny Green leading the way with two home runs.
- 2:18:48Solo blast by Lee Thomas, Tony Canigliaro, and Felix Mancilla.
- 2:18:54The Red Sox hit the ball very well throughout the ball game.
- 2:18:57The defensive play of Rico Peticelli was quite a highlight of the game.
- 2:19:02Rico made quite a few defensive plays and looked very good defensively.
- 2:19:06And now back to Kurt Gowdy.
- 2:19:08All right Mel, that's number one out of the way for you,
- 2:19:12and it'll be easier for Mel on the rest of the way.
- 2:19:17So Ned Martin will wrap it up and we'll see you ladies and gentlemen Wednesday afternoon at 1.25 with another Red Sox broadcast.
- 2:19:24And now here's Ned.
- 2:19:26Turtles on the game, Red Sox seven runs, seven hits, no errors, and four left.
- 2:19:31Washington two runs, five hits, one error, and three left.
- 2:19:35Mambo of course the winning pitcher all the way his first of the year.
- 2:19:39And let's see, that's two runs and 45 innings, the last 45 innings that he has pitched against these Washington Senators,
- 2:19:45counting the last four games last year and this one.
- 2:19:48Loser was the starter Phil Ortega who had trouble with the home run ball.
- 2:19:52He gave up three of them.
- 2:19:53He went five innings and lost the game.
- 2:19:55Rydzik worked three and gave up two homers.
- 2:19:57And Frank Kreitzer came on and struck out the side of the ninth.
- 2:20:00The Red Sox was either feast or famine was them.
- 2:20:03They hit home runs or they struck out.
- 2:20:05They had five homers and they struck out ten times.
- 2:20:08On Wednesday it will be Earl Wilson against Bus Narum as we get a first look at Earl this year.
- 2:20:13Mambo Kett and Wilson will lead the pitcher Saturday and Sunday against Baltimore.
- 2:20:17And we're going to look at Jim Lombard and Earl or Dave Morehead on Monday in the Patriots Day doubleheader against the Senators.
- 2:20:24Other scores quickly Minnesota leading the Yankees four to nothing at the end of four.
- 2:20:29In the National League the Dodgers leading the Mets six to one at the end of five and a half.
- 2:20:34The Giants and Pittsburgh nothing nothing at the end of the regulation nine.
- 2:20:38And Cincinnati leading Milwaukee one to nothing at the end of four.
- 2:20:42It's the Cardinals five and Chicago Cubs four at the end of three innings.
- 2:20:47We saw just about everything today.
- 2:20:49The home run, the Presidents, we saw the Red Sox steal two bases.
- 2:20:52We saw a couple of fine defensive plays by the new shortstop Petrocelli.
- 2:20:57A great play by first baseman Lee Tallis.
- 2:20:59And Tallis had the RBI lead with a three run homer.
- 2:21:03But Lenny Green had the most home runs.
- 2:21:05He got two in his first appearance officially as a Red Sox ball player.
- 2:21:09Files to our Red Sox seven and Washington two.
- 2:21:12Ned Martin along with Kurt Gotti, Mel Parnell and our engineer Al Walker saying so long from Washington.
- 2:21:18Red Sox baseball has been brought to you by the Atlantic Refining Company and your local Atlantic dealer.
- 2:21:25By the brewers of Narragansett Lager Beer, the beer with that famous straight from the barrel taste.
- 2:21:31And by White Owl Cigars, the cigars made the costly way with tobaccos aged in wood for mildness and flavor.
- 2:21:39And Tiparillo by Robert Burns, the modern smoke found in all the right places with the right people.
- 2:21:46Music.
