  SPEAKER_01: that is where he described for the apostles as they were looking at the temple,

  SPEAKER_01: the dwelling place of God at that time, the It was the center of Jewish life.

  SPEAKER_01: to be sober,

  SPEAKER_01: to be clear-headed,
• 0:54
  SPEAKER_01: to watch and to wait,

  SPEAKER_01: and above all,

  SPEAKER_01: to not be deceived,

  SPEAKER_01: that the central temptation and strategy of Satan is to deceive God's people

  SPEAKER_01: and even to take those who don't know God into deeper, deeper lies and deceptions.

  SPEAKER_01: You remember how effective he was in the garden,
• 1:16
  SPEAKER_01: even with Adam and Eve and God's command that they not eat of the tree.

  SPEAKER_01: And the serpent came and slowly seduced Eve and Adam into not trusting God.

  SPEAKER_01: First of all, by raising the question, did he really say?

  SPEAKER_01: I mean,
• 1:33
  SPEAKER_01: Eve was pretty clear that she heard pretty clear that that tree was not meant

  SPEAKER_01: to be touched, not meant to be.

  SPEAKER_01: Nothing from that tree should be eaten.

  SPEAKER_01: And the devil said, Tries to get her to doubt just a little bit.

  SPEAKER_01: And then she comes back and her doubt's a little bit there and

  SPEAKER_01: then he starts raising a question like, why would he withhold that tree from you?

  SPEAKER_01: Have you given it some thought, Eve?

  SPEAKER_01: Have you given it some thought, Adam?

  SPEAKER_01: I think the logical thing is he's holding it back because He doesn't want you

  SPEAKER_01: to have his power and his influence.
• 2:17
  SPEAKER_01: You can have it.

  SPEAKER_01: You can have it.

  SPEAKER_01: It's right there.
• 2:20
  SPEAKER_01: And then they respond.

  SPEAKER_01: No, no, no.

  SPEAKER_01: He said if we eat of the tree, we will die.

  SPEAKER_01: And then the devil just comes right out with a big, bold lie.

  SPEAKER_01: Did he say that?

  SPEAKER_01: He didn't say that.

  SPEAKER_01: He didn't say that you die.

  SPEAKER_01: And so confusion, deception.

  SPEAKER_01: Playing with the human imagination,

  SPEAKER_01: the human will,
• 2:40
  SPEAKER_01: and then once the fall happens, he's got a greater entry point, you could say.

  SPEAKER_01: So Jesus warns us again and again, don't be deceived, don't be led astray.

  SPEAKER_01: Friends,

  SPEAKER_01: it's not hard to see that millions upon millions upon millions
• 2:56
  SPEAKER_01: of baptized people have been led astray for the things that they're promoting,
• 3:01
  SPEAKER_01: abortion,
• 3:02
  SPEAKER_01: euthanasia,
• 3:04
  SPEAKER_01: the whole transgender realities,
• 3:06
  SPEAKER_01: Just one thing after another,
• 3:08
  SPEAKER_01: terrible,
• 3:08
  SPEAKER_01: terrible stuff that's becoming written in law and they're dancing and happy
• 3:13
  SPEAKER_01: about all these things being able to be done.

  SPEAKER_01: They're all from a calling good evil, evil good.

  SPEAKER_01: There's a lot that can be said about it.
• 3:19
  SPEAKER_01: Maybe we'll take it up in more detail in the weeks ahead.

  SPEAKER_01: But that deception being led astray is really happening.
• 3:27
  SPEAKER_01: And so is the kind of the idea that All religions are the same.

  SPEAKER_01: Every path up the mountain goes to the same place.

  SPEAKER_01: Christianity does not have any particular pride of place.
• 3:38
  SPEAKER_01: Again, people buying it all the time.
• 3:41
  SPEAKER_01: Or I can self-create.
• 3:42
  SPEAKER_01: Self-creative individualism is the source of all happiness
• 3:46
  SPEAKER_01: and what human beings are all meant to be about rather than receiving from God.

  SPEAKER_01: God's purpose, God's plan.
• 3:52
  SPEAKER_01: God is the ground of all being.
• 3:54
  SPEAKER_01: We all exist.
• 3:55
  SPEAKER_01: He holds us in being.
• 3:56
  SPEAKER_01: He gave us our identity.
• 3:57
  SPEAKER_01: We don't create it.
• 3:58
  SPEAKER_01: We don't make it up.
• 4:00
  SPEAKER_01: So all that deception is just alive and working in our time.

  SPEAKER_01: And many, many Christians are falling asleep.

  SPEAKER_01: And we could be,
• 4:08
  SPEAKER_01: it's possible that what we're witnessing in the collapse of Christendom is
• 4:12
  SPEAKER_01: the beginning of the great apostasy.

  SPEAKER_01: It's possible.

  SPEAKER_01: Now, just to review what Jesus talked about in the Olivet Discourse,

  SPEAKER_01: beginning stage one, he described the birth pangs that would happen.

  SPEAKER_01: Jesus said the beginning of the birth pangs would have, would be identifiable.

  SPEAKER_01: There'd be The rising of false Christs,
• 4:29
  SPEAKER_01: people calling themselves the Savior, the Messiah, false prophets.

  SPEAKER_01: Matthew 24 did the same thing.
• 4:35
  SPEAKER_01: Deception would increase and intensify.
• 4:38
  SPEAKER_01: Again, there would be wars and rumors of wars.
• 4:40
  SPEAKER_01: There will be earthquakes and famines and all of this.
• 4:43
  SPEAKER_01: And then the birth pangs are not merely geopolitical events,
• 4:48
  SPEAKER_01: but it also comes right down to every human heart.
• 4:51
  SPEAKER_01: To awaken humanity, to call sinners to repentance, to purify the church.
• 4:56
  SPEAKER_01: That's what an alert body of people are like.
• 4:59
  SPEAKER_01: The church's mission during these birth pangs, what do we do?
• 5:02
  SPEAKER_01: It's the Great Commission, go make disciples of all nations.
• 5:06
  SPEAKER_01: And then as it gets intensified,
• 5:07
  SPEAKER_01: as we talked about during the tribulation that comes with the rise of
• 5:11
  SPEAKER_01: the Antichrist,
• 5:12
  SPEAKER_01: there's going to be persecution, there's going to be betrayal, hatred, martyrdom.
• 5:16
  SPEAKER_01: It's all going to be a part of it.
• 5:18
  SPEAKER_01: But during that time, the gospel Must first be preached to all nations before the Lord returns.

  SPEAKER_01: And the gospel is going forward in that way.
• 5:27
  SPEAKER_01: You could check paragraphs 849 through 856.

  SPEAKER_01: It touches on some of these things in the mission of the church.

  SPEAKER_01: But the church will be engaged in her mission.
• 5:36
  SPEAKER_01: A great apostasy will happen.
• 5:37
  SPEAKER_01: The man of lawlessness will emerge.
• 5:39
  SPEAKER_01: The Antichrist empowered by Satan himself.
• 5:43
  SPEAKER_01: And he will lead this great rebellion.

  SPEAKER_01: Against the Lord, there'll be a huge falling away.
• 5:48
  SPEAKER_01: Look at paragraph 675 of the Catechism.

  SPEAKER_01: Before Christ's coming, the church must pass through this final trial.

  SPEAKER_01: We're not going to get raptured out of it.

  SPEAKER_01: Like some Protestants say, it was made up 200 years ago.

  SPEAKER_01: The Lord's believers are going to follow the Lord in his passion.

  SPEAKER_01: The man of lawlessness will eventually be revealed.

  SPEAKER_01: The restrainer that was holding back It's a man of lawlessness that is the Antichrist.

  SPEAKER_01: I've talked about it many times this week already, what the restrainer is.

  SPEAKER_01: It could be the church, the prayers of the church, the prayers of the saints.

  SPEAKER_01: It could be Michael.
• 6:23
  SPEAKER_01: It could be God the Father.
• 6:25
  SPEAKER_01: It could be a whole range of saints and current leaders,

  SPEAKER_01: priests, others speculate about it, but we're not sure.

  SPEAKER_01: But he is the lawless one.

  SPEAKER_01: He opposes God.

  SPEAKER_01: He exalts himself as God.

  SPEAKER_01: He deceives many.
• 6:38
  SPEAKER_01: He performs signs and wonders.
• 6:40
  SPEAKER_01: He receives this significant satanic power.

  SPEAKER_01: Why are people ultimately deceived during this time?

  SPEAKER_01: Why do so many people fall away?

  SPEAKER_01: Well, the dazzling power, they're looking at what glitters.
• 6:54
  SPEAKER_01: The devil can find the entry points,
• 6:56
  SPEAKER_01: demonic spirits can find entry points in people's weaknesses.

  SPEAKER_01: Have people been vigilant?
• 7:01
  SPEAKER_01: Have they been walking in the light?
• 7:02
  SPEAKER_01: Have they been walking the sacraments?
• 7:03
  SPEAKER_01: Have been living the faith?

  SPEAKER_01: People who are in that position They may have to do some battling,
• 7:09
  SPEAKER_01: but they don't have to live in fear because the power that's in them is enough
• 7:12
  SPEAKER_01: to resist the working of the devil.

  SPEAKER_01: Paul gives remarkable answer to the question, why are people deceived?
• 7:20
  SPEAKER_01: 2 Thessalonians 2, verse 10, as we talked about yesterday, they refuse to love the truth.

  SPEAKER_01: They refuse to love the truth.
• 7:28
  SPEAKER_01: They have itching ears.
• 7:30
  SPEAKER_01: They're pursuing other purposes,
• 7:32
  SPEAKER_01: other pleasures,
• 7:33
  SPEAKER_01: other personal truths in their life that they've elevated and made central or put in
• 7:38
  SPEAKER_01: the first place.
• 7:39
  SPEAKER_01: But they refuse to embrace the truth, which is the person of Jesus, ultimately.

  SPEAKER_01: The final trial of the church,
• 7:47
  SPEAKER_01: the church will undergo persecution,
• 7:49
  SPEAKER_01: deception, religious counterfeits going to emerge, pseudo-Messianism.
• 7:55
  SPEAKER_01: The catechism you'll see talks about this,
• 7:58
  SPEAKER_01: that there's forms of this pseudo-messiah vision and effort in the world,

  SPEAKER_01: demonic powers.

  SPEAKER_01: For example, communism.

  SPEAKER_01: It was utopian, right?
• 8:09
  SPEAKER_01: It's gonna save.
• 8:11
  SPEAKER_01: It's gonna feed the poor.

  SPEAKER_01: It's gonna make, it's gonna level the playing field.

  SPEAKER_01: There's gonna be no people above other people.

  SPEAKER_01: Everybody's gonna be equal.

  SPEAKER_01: And you saw what happened?

  SPEAKER_01: I don't know, was it 50 million people killed?

  SPEAKER_01: Chairman Mao, didn't he kill like 40 million himself?

  SPEAKER_01: What happened in China?

  SPEAKER_01: The great move forward or whatever it was called.

  SPEAKER_01: All utopian lies.

  SPEAKER_01: It is impossible.

  SPEAKER_01: For human beings on the Earth to save the planet,

  SPEAKER_01: it's impossible for human beings to ultimately fix the world.

  SPEAKER_01: There is no fixing of the world.

  SPEAKER_01: The world is under a dominion of power.

  SPEAKER_01: It's living a death-directed destiny.

  SPEAKER_01: And being global citizens isn't going to change that.

  SPEAKER_01: I'm not knocking good political efforts to do good stuff, but the whole world is under judgment.

  SPEAKER_01: And the spiritual battle is so far beyond our politics

  SPEAKER_01: and it's often manipulating our politics and our love for money and our lust

  SPEAKER_01: for this, that, and the other thing.

  SPEAKER_01: Maybe the next pseudo-Messiah is going to be AI.

  SPEAKER_01: AI is going to solve it all for us.
• 9:22
  SPEAKER_01: All our big problems are all going to be solved by this machinery.

  SPEAKER_01: Or part human, part machine.
• 9:28
  SPEAKER_01: Maybe the neural lace put in human brain.
• 9:31
  SPEAKER_01: Maybe that's going to supercharge the brain and we're going to come up with all
• 9:34
  SPEAKER_01: the answers to solve all the problems.
• 9:36
  SPEAKER_01: And the fundamental problem is sin.
• 9:39
  SPEAKER_01: It's death.
• 9:40
  SPEAKER_01: It's dominion of the devil.
• 9:42
  SPEAKER_01: No human effort can take care of these problems.
• 9:47
  SPEAKER_01: And so the church is warning us about these false messiahs.

  SPEAKER_01: The church will follow Christ in her passion,
• 9:53
  SPEAKER_01: but the glorious return of the Lord will take place.

  SPEAKER_01: Jesus spoke very clearly.
• 9:59
  SPEAKER_01: It's going to be visible.

  SPEAKER_01: It's going to be glorious.

  SPEAKER_01: It's going to be his victory.

  SPEAKER_01: The resurrection of the dead, the final judgment, the new creation, the defeat of Satan.

  SPEAKER_01: to our death in God's way,

  SPEAKER_01: in God's timing, the final judgment, the personal, particular judgment.

  SPEAKER_01: The particular judgment will happen when we die.

  SPEAKER_01: But we can anticipate it with joy, with humility and great joy.

  SPEAKER_01: Because the saving work of Jesus has happened in our lives.

  SPEAKER_01: We have to live in it and we have to die in it.

  SPEAKER_01: We can't have one foot in the world and one foot in the kingdom.

  SPEAKER_01: That is clearly what Jesus said and the apostles say and the saints tell us.

  SPEAKER_01: In fact, the book of Revelation said the Lord hates lukewarmness.

  SPEAKER_01: Friends, you don't just kind of Glide into the kingdom.

  SPEAKER_01: It requires loving God above all things and loving our neighbor as ourselves.

  SPEAKER_01: Our salvation is nearer now than when we first believed, Romans 13, 11.

  SPEAKER_01: We don't have to be afraid.

  SPEAKER_01: It's come down to us in the apostolic succession and the preaching of the church and

  SPEAKER_01: the word of God, the teaching of the magisterium, the lives of the saints.

  SPEAKER_01: It's a passing shadow.

  SPEAKER_01: We're here today and we're gone tomorrow.

  SPEAKER_01: It's a breath.

  SPEAKER_01: Are you ready?

  SPEAKER_01: Are you walking in the light?

  SPEAKER_01: Are you loving the truth?

  SPEAKER_01: Are you loving the truth that is a person,

  SPEAKER_01: Jesus of Nazareth,

  SPEAKER_01: with your whole heart, your whole mind, your whole soul, all your strength?

  SPEAKER_01: And are you engaging in his mission and being living witnesses for the sake of
