- 0:03Speaker 1: I get everybody. I'm Dan Horde and thanks for downloading
- 0:06Speaker 1: the Bengals Booth Podcast. The It's time to begin, isn't it. Addition,
- 0:13Speaker 1: as the Bengals announced they are adding a long awaited
- 0:16Speaker 1: Ring of Honor to Paul Brown Stadium. Coming up, I'll
- 0:20Speaker 1: talk to Elizabeth Blackburn, the Bengals Director of Strategy and Engagement,
- 0:23Speaker 1: as she explains why the Bengals are moving forward with
- 0:26Speaker 1: a Ring of Honor, how many players will make up
- 0:28Speaker 1: the initial class and how they are being chosen, and
- 0:31Speaker 1: if that picture of a snow covered stadium back in
- 0:34Speaker 1: February that included a hint of today's news was a
- 0:38Speaker 1: clever tease or an honest mistake. Then I'll talk to
- 0:42Speaker 1: the greatest player in franchise history, Anthony Munio's about Bengals
- 0:47Speaker 1: legends being honored this year and for years to come,
- 0:50Speaker 1: and I'll sneak in a few questions about the draft
- 0:53Speaker 1: as well. The Bengals Booth Podcast is presented by bud Light.
- 0:57Speaker 1: Seltzer refreshed the game and here's a quick reminder that
- 1:01Speaker 1: you can have the latest edition of this podcast delivered
- 1:04Speaker 1: write to your phone, tablet, or computer by subscribing on iTunes, Stitcher,
- 1:08Speaker 1: Google Play, Spotify, or pod Bean. It's the greatest thing
- 1:12Speaker 1: since the book God's at Play. That book, written by
- 1:19Speaker 1: Tom Callahan, a columnist for the Cincinnati Inquirer back in
- 1:22Speaker 1: the nineteen seventies, include some great material about Paul Brown
- 1:26Speaker 1: and the Bengals, including this nugget. Once a training camp
- 1:31Speaker 1: in Wilmington, Callahan and Brown were having lunch and the
- 1:34Speaker 1: writer said, I'm looking for a column, Paul, Do you
- 1:37Speaker 1: have any ideas Paul Brown gave him this quote. I'd
- 1:43Speaker 1: take a closer look at this new six foot two
- 1:45Speaker 1: fellow Ken Anderson. I'd be especially interested and how much
- 1:49Speaker 1: taller than six two he appears to stand in the pocket,
- 1:52Speaker 1: and how the veteran players out offense respond to him.
- 1:55Speaker 1: I'd forget that he's just a third round draft choice.
- 1:59Speaker 1: I'd ignore the fact that he went to a nothing school.
- 2:02Speaker 1: I'd trust my eyes. That's what I'd do if I
- 2:06Speaker 1: were a newspaper columnist today. Pretty cool stuff, right again.
- 2:11Speaker 1: The title of the book is God's at Play and
- 2:15Speaker 1: the author is Tom Callahan. Speaking of Paul Brown, the
- 2:19Speaker 1: Bengals announced this morning that the legendary coach and Anthony
- 2:22Speaker 1: Munio's are the first two members of their new Ring
- 2:25Speaker 1: of Honor. Two more will be added to this year's
- 2:28Speaker 1: initial class in an upcoming vote by season ticket members.
- 2:32Speaker 1: I spoke to the Bengals Director of Strategy and Engagement,
- 2:35Speaker 1: Elizabeth Blackburn, about today's announcement. Today, the Bengals are announcing
- 2:41Speaker 1: the addition of a Ring of Honor at Paul Brown
- 2:44Speaker 1: Stadium beginning this year. What led to that decision probably
- 2:48Speaker 1: started with the fact that we have a very strong
- 2:51Speaker 1: desire from our amazing fans and season ticket holders to
- 2:56Speaker 1: have a Ring of Honor and the cinc Addy Bengals
- 3:01Speaker 1: have such a rich history and our fans in the
- 3:06Speaker 1: community want to celebrate that. A piece that was always
- 3:11Speaker 1: holding us back was it's just a name on a wall,
- 3:15Speaker 1: and for these legends in Bengal's history, it didn't feel
- 3:21Speaker 1: like it was enough. And so over the last twelve
- 3:26Speaker 1: to fourteen months, the company has shifted our approach to
- 3:32Speaker 1: content and we have added a lot of capability in
- 3:37Speaker 1: video and photo content, and that and the digital channels
- 3:44Speaker 1: that exist today with our app, our website, social media,
- 3:49Speaker 1: combined with our ability to create great content, gave us
- 3:54Speaker 1: an additional piece that we could pair with a physical
- 3:58Speaker 1: ring of honor that finally felt made it feel like
- 4:03Speaker 1: it was enough. We were doing justice to these amazing
- 4:07Speaker 1: legends in Bengal's history, like Anthony Muno's like Paul Brown,
- 4:12Speaker 1: to really tell their stories in addition to showing their
- 4:17Speaker 1: name or name and number on the facade in the stadium.
- 4:21Speaker 1: How many people will make up the initial class and
- 4:23Speaker 1: how will they be chosen? The initial class will have
- 4:26Speaker 1: four inductees or calling them our first four. Two of them,
- 4:31Speaker 1: Paul Brown and Anthony Munio's were are automatically inducted as
- 4:37Speaker 1: our Pro Football Hall of Fame representatives of the club.
- 4:42Speaker 1: And we will fill out the second half of the
- 4:45Speaker 1: inaugural class through a season ticket member vote. And that
- 4:52Speaker 1: component is really important because we know how much the
- 4:57Speaker 1: season ticket members have wanted this. This makes them part
- 5:01Speaker 1: of the process. So we're really excited about the ability
- 5:04Speaker 1: to engage our season ticket members to help us induct
- 5:09Speaker 1: or vote for the second half those next two inductees
- 5:14Speaker 1: for our full inaugural class of four. How did you
- 5:18Speaker 1: settle on for for year one and what will be
- 5:20Speaker 1: the procedure for adding to the Ring of honor in
- 5:22Speaker 1: future years. Our goal with the Ring of Honor is
- 5:26Speaker 1: to build it in a sustainable way, and we want
- 5:30Speaker 1: this Ring of Honor to remain prestigious and engaging for
- 5:36Speaker 1: a long long time to come. So we went through
- 5:41Speaker 1: many debates so and there's definitely no perfect answer. So
- 5:45Speaker 1: many people want there to be more and there might
- 5:48Speaker 1: be some people who want it to be even more exclusive,
- 5:51Speaker 1: and we just felt like four for the first year.
- 5:57Speaker 1: It just struck that balance, and we do plan to
- 6:02Speaker 1: continue to add in future years, and we hope that
- 6:07Speaker 1: those votes it will be a voting component in future
- 6:11Speaker 1: years as well. We hope that the future years still
- 6:15Speaker 1: carry weight and excitement and prestige like this initial year,
- 6:21Speaker 1: so that the Ring of Honor lasts in a significant
- 6:24Speaker 1: way for a long time to come. We're talking to
- 6:26Speaker 1: Elizabeth Blackburn, the Bengals director of Strategy and Engagement. Will
- 6:30Speaker 1: the initial class be honored at one game this year?
- 6:33Speaker 1: Will you spread it out throughout the course of the year.
- 6:36Speaker 1: We are going to honor the entire inaugural class together
- 6:42Speaker 1: at one game. We want that one game to be
- 6:45Speaker 1: really special, and we're working through a neat and significant
- 6:50Speaker 1: way to unveil the ring altogether. We haven't picked what
- 6:55Speaker 1: that date or game is yet. We still are waiting
- 6:57Speaker 1: to hear what the twenty twenty one schedule, but we
- 7:01Speaker 1: will select a designated or dedicated Ring of Honor game,
- 7:07Speaker 1: and we will honor all four inductees. We plan to
- 7:10Speaker 1: do a halftime ceremony, obviously COVID protocols contingent, but we're
- 7:16Speaker 1: very optimistic about what the stadium environment is going to
- 7:20Speaker 1: be like this year. We think it's going to be
- 7:22Speaker 1: a really special year when celebrating your past and looking
- 7:28Speaker 1: ahead at a bright future converge with this landscape of
- 7:32Speaker 1: bringing communities back together again. So we're excited for that
- 7:36Speaker 1: Ring of Honor game and we're excited to announce it
- 7:38Speaker 1: when we know when it will be. On a snowy
- 7:41Speaker 1: day back in February, the social media team tweeted out
- 7:45Speaker 1: a picture of the stadium covered in snow, a lovely photograph,
- 7:48Speaker 1: and eagle eyed fans zoomed in and noticed the names
- 7:52Speaker 1: of some of the all time legends displayed around the
- 7:54Speaker 1: stadium and different colors and different letter fonts. Was that
- 7:58Speaker 1: a clever Easter egg for Bengals fans or an honest mistake, Dan,
- 8:03Speaker 1: I'm never going to tell you the answer to that question,
- 8:05Speaker 1: although I probably should anticipate getting it a lot, But
- 8:09Speaker 1: all I will say is seeing the fans reaction to
- 8:14Speaker 1: finding that and then it made the local news and
- 8:19Speaker 1: the buzz that it created was really excited and makes
- 8:23Speaker 1: me very excited to formally unveil it and get the
- 8:28Speaker 1: reaction because there's pent up demand, if you will, and
- 8:32Speaker 1: it was really exciting to see that from the fans
- 8:35Speaker 1: In years to come. Could there be statues outside of
- 8:39Speaker 1: Paul Brown Stadium, a team hall of Fame, any other
- 8:43Speaker 1: ways to honor all time Bengals legends. I will give
- 8:47Speaker 1: you my personal answer on this, but which is I
- 8:50Speaker 1: set it to our team a lot. I think everything
- 8:53Speaker 1: is on the table right now, and how we celebrate
- 8:58Speaker 1: and honor our passed and build out new traditions to
- 9:04Speaker 1: do that is a work in progress and I couldn't
- 9:08Speaker 1: tell you right now what it's going to look like,
- 9:10Speaker 1: but I do know that I personally and are my
- 9:15Speaker 1: family and the organization. I love tradition and so finding
- 9:21Speaker 1: more traditions is a really important thing. Final question for
- 9:26Speaker 1: Elizabeth Blackburn, the Bengals Director of Strategy and Engagement. I've
- 9:30Speaker 1: talked to your grandfather Mike about this in the past,
- 9:33Speaker 1: and his position was always football is the ultimate team sport.
- 9:37Speaker 1: It's hard to honor the quarterback or the wide receiver
- 9:40Speaker 1: without also honoring all of the guys that make their
- 9:43Speaker 1: success possible. Did you help change his mind? So when
- 9:50Speaker 1: we brought down Anthony Munio's for an interview after we
- 9:54Speaker 1: told him that he was going to be one of
- 9:56Speaker 1: the two initial inductees. During Anthony's interview, he started talking
- 10:03Speaker 1: about the Ring of Honor as a team and the
- 10:08Speaker 1: way I like to think of the Ring of Honor,
- 10:11Speaker 1: while it is celebrating individuals for their achievements and contributions
- 10:17Speaker 1: on the field and in the community, is that I
- 10:22Speaker 1: hope that their Bengals Ring of Honor becomes a new
- 10:26Speaker 1: form of a team. And I hope that the individuals inducted.
- 10:32Speaker 1: I hope that the season ticket members who get to vote,
- 10:34Speaker 1: I hope that everyone who gets to play a part
- 10:37Speaker 1: of it feels like they're a part of this team.
- 10:42Speaker 1: And I think for the actual inductees, as we over
- 10:46Speaker 1: time add more and more, it will be exciting to
- 10:49Speaker 1: see the Ring of Honor turn into this all time
- 10:52Speaker 1: Bengals team and connect players and coaches and individuals across
- 10:59Speaker 1: different era of the team into one team. I know
- 11:04Speaker 1: this is going to create a lot of excitement among
- 11:07Speaker 1: Bengals fans and former players, and I appreciate you sharing
- 11:10Speaker 1: some of the information that went into this decision. Thank
- 11:13Speaker 1: you Elizabeth, Thank you Dan. It will be interesting to
- 11:17Speaker 1: see who will be added to this year's initial class.
- 11:19Speaker 1: Ken Anderson, Ken Riley, Tim Crumray, Boomeris Hiason, Chad Johnson,
- 11:24Speaker 1: Willie Anderson, David Fulcher and others are all worthy candidates
- 11:28Speaker 1: for the voters, but no vote was needed for the
- 11:31Speaker 1: first player added to the Bengals Ring of Honor. He
- 11:34Speaker 1: is widely considered to be the greatest offensive lineman to
- 11:38Speaker 1: ever play the game. Hall of Famer Anthony Munio's Anthony,
- 11:43Speaker 1: how did you get the news and what was your
- 11:45Speaker 1: immediate reaction? Well, you know, it's interesting because, first of all,
- 11:50Speaker 1: I gotta share this because this is our twentieth anniversary
- 11:52Speaker 1: for our foundation. So I had contacted the Bengals about
- 11:56Speaker 1: doing something for us for the foundation, you know, making
- 11:59Speaker 1: a commitment over the phone with Troy, and he got
- 12:02Speaker 1: back to the family and he said, let me let
- 12:04Speaker 1: me talk to them and I'll call you well, he
- 12:06Speaker 1: called me, is this can you come in a day
- 12:08Speaker 1: next week? And this was a couple of weeks ago.
- 12:10Speaker 1: I said, yeah, I can come in and talk about it.
- 12:13Speaker 1: So I went to the Bengals office expecting maybe to
- 12:16Speaker 1: meet with him and Katie about you know, hey, what
- 12:18Speaker 1: are you guys gonna be able to do for the foundation?
- 12:20Speaker 1: And all of a sudden I walk in. Mike's in there,
- 12:23Speaker 1: Katie's in there, Troy's in there, Elizabeth's in there. Peb
- 12:27Speaker 1: was out getting rehab on his hip that he's messed up.
- 12:30Speaker 1: So the whole family was in there, and I'm like, oh, okay,
- 12:33Speaker 1: and so we sat down and then Mike started out
- 12:36Speaker 1: by by sharing with me that, you know, they were
- 12:38Speaker 1: going to do a Ringham honor and the two initial
- 12:42Speaker 1: inductees were going to be, you know, Paul Brown and myself.
- 12:45Speaker 1: And I was like, oh, my goodness. So I got
- 12:47Speaker 1: the word in front of the whole family and the
- 12:49Speaker 1: fact that the original two, or the inaugural two are
- 12:52Speaker 1: going to be Paul Brown, who started the foundation, and myself,
- 12:56Speaker 1: it's humbling, it's exciting. And then we just sat around
- 13:00Speaker 1: shared stories, I mean, and it was fun because you know,
- 13:04Speaker 1: Troy and Katie are a little older. But Elizabeth I
- 13:07Speaker 1: think she might have been born the year I retired
- 13:10Speaker 1: or a year after I retired. But we sat there
- 13:13Speaker 1: and just shared stories, and she was kind of on
- 13:15Speaker 1: the corner over there, just smiling and she and she
- 13:18Speaker 1: sent me an email after her she goes, that's exactly
- 13:21Speaker 1: what this is all about. You know. I shared a
- 13:23Speaker 1: story about, you know, Paul Brown and how much he
- 13:25Speaker 1: meant and you know that Mike was talking about they're
- 13:29Speaker 1: they're watching the Rose Bowl on January first in nineteen
- 13:32Speaker 1: eighty him with his brother Pete and Paul and how
- 13:34Speaker 1: they just you know, he shared that whole story about
- 13:36Speaker 1: how that went down, and so, you know, it was
- 13:38Speaker 1: pretty exciting just not only getting that, but being able
- 13:41Speaker 1: to just connect and share some stories, some memories, some
- 13:45Speaker 1: history that you know has happened over the years. That's
- 13:48Speaker 1: really interesting. It's no secret that Mike has been reluctant
- 13:51Speaker 1: to do this, thinking that football is the ultimate team
- 13:55Speaker 1: game and it's hard to honor a quarterback or running
- 13:58Speaker 1: back without honoring everybody that made their success possible. Could
- 14:02Speaker 1: you sense in that conversation that now that this decision
- 14:06Speaker 1: has been made, he's excited about it. I think so.
- 14:09Speaker 1: And you know, I think the one thing you know
- 14:12Speaker 1: about Mike, at least when I'm around him most, is
- 14:15Speaker 1: usually a camp you know, he's kind of sitting in
- 14:17Speaker 1: the cart, and he's always cordial, and we always talk
- 14:20Speaker 1: about football and and he loves the guys that come
- 14:23Speaker 1: by practicing. So I think that's always been there with him.
- 14:27Speaker 1: Maybe the reluctancy of making doing a Ring of Honor,
- 14:29Speaker 1: but I think he's always appreciated all the guys. I think,
- 14:33Speaker 1: deep down inside, I think there's a lot of excitement
- 14:35Speaker 1: for this and for me, just the opportunity to celebrate.
- 14:40Speaker 1: And you know, because you know the history, the number
- 14:43Speaker 1: of guys that have gone and played in you know,
- 14:45Speaker 1: with this franchise, I mean before I was here, during
- 14:49Speaker 1: my years and then after. It's just phenomenal that the
- 14:52Speaker 1: great players that we've had in this organization now we
- 14:55Speaker 1: get to celebrate and recognize the guys. We are talking
- 14:58Speaker 1: to Hall of Famer Anthony Moone, it was initial member
- 15:01Speaker 1: of the bengals first Ring of Honor class. In February,
- 15:05Speaker 1: pictures leaked that made it pretty clear that the Bengals
- 15:08Speaker 1: were at least strongly considering a ring of honor. It
- 15:11Speaker 1: got the fans talking what about former players? Well, it's
- 15:16Speaker 1: funny because when that came out, I think I had
- 15:18Speaker 1: like a handful of texts coming Okay, what do you know? What?
- 15:21Speaker 1: I said? What do I know about? What the Ring
- 15:24Speaker 1: of Honor? I'm like, wait, what are you talking about?
- 15:25Speaker 1: Because I had no clue. I hadn't seen the pictures
- 15:28Speaker 1: until a couple of my staff here had sent them
- 15:30Speaker 1: to me some close friends, you know. So yeah, I
- 15:34Speaker 1: didn't know anything about it, and I really hadn't talked
- 15:37Speaker 1: to any of the guys about it because of course,
- 15:38Speaker 1: you know, February is still cold. We're not on the
- 15:40Speaker 1: golf course as much as we have, so you know,
- 15:44Speaker 1: I think I maybe had played with Jim Breach. You know,
- 15:47Speaker 1: we'll play when it's forty degree, so, you know, I
- 15:50Speaker 1: think the weather was good enough and we were playing
- 15:51Speaker 1: a little bit, but we just kind of said, wouldn't
- 15:54Speaker 1: that be cool if that's really going to happen. So
- 15:56Speaker 1: I think there was you know, at least I haven't
- 15:58Speaker 1: talked to the guy. I think there's a out of
- 16:00Speaker 1: excitement now that this is going to happen. What do
- 16:03Speaker 1: you think it'll mean? To former players, including guys that
- 16:06Speaker 1: aren't likely to get in but played with guys that
- 16:10Speaker 1: we'll get in. Well again, excitement and just the memory
- 16:14Speaker 1: of being teammates. You know. Sure, you're only going to have,
- 16:17Speaker 1: you know, a certain number of guys to be there,
- 16:19Speaker 1: but from what I understand, it's going to be a
- 16:21Speaker 1: celebration for all guys, which I think is cool, not
- 16:24Speaker 1: just the guys going in the Ring of Honor, but
- 16:26Speaker 1: like you, just the teammates. And I think, you know,
- 16:29Speaker 1: I think that's going to be exciting to be part
- 16:31Speaker 1: of that celebration, you know, because quite frankly, I'm going in.
- 16:36Speaker 1: Maybe the guy that played next to him, he's not
- 16:37Speaker 1: going in, but he is very important in me getting
- 16:41Speaker 1: involved getting inducted into this Ring of Honor because you know,
- 16:44Speaker 1: he was a very important part of my career and
- 16:47Speaker 1: all the other guys I played with. So I really
- 16:49Speaker 1: believe it's going to be exciting for guys going in
- 16:52Speaker 1: and guys that might not go in. We're visiting with
- 16:55Speaker 1: Anthony Munio's back in twenty seventeen, when the Bengals celebrated
- 16:59Speaker 1: their fifth of season, most of the franchises all time
- 17:03Speaker 1: greats made it back to Cincinnati to be honored. Did
- 17:06Speaker 1: that feel like a turning point in any way in
- 17:08Speaker 1: the relationship between the former guys in the organization. I
- 17:12Speaker 1: think so. I think that was huge. And again, you know,
- 17:15Speaker 1: we had those Saturday night dinners where you know, guys
- 17:17Speaker 1: were telling stories and of course the stories get a
- 17:20Speaker 1: lot better than when they actually happened, but I think
- 17:23Speaker 1: it was I think the guys really appreciated that, really
- 17:26Speaker 1: felt comfortable, and like you said, everybody made it back
- 17:29Speaker 1: and there was you know, we had those Saturday night
- 17:31Speaker 1: dinners and they were packed. I mean, there was all
- 17:34Speaker 1: kinds of guys and to hear, you know, from me,
- 17:37Speaker 1: to meet guys like Tommy Tommy casting over that I'd
- 17:39Speaker 1: never met, or guys that played I'd seen Mike Read before,
- 17:43Speaker 1: but I hadn't officially met Mike Read. You know, those
- 17:46Speaker 1: are the guys that really laid the foundation for guys
- 17:48Speaker 1: like me that you know, came in the eighties. So,
- 17:51Speaker 1: you know, I think that was really kind of that
- 17:53Speaker 1: turning point of you know, guys saying, hey, man, you
- 17:56Speaker 1: know they did this. Hopefully things happened, you know, more
- 17:59Speaker 1: often in the future, and it looks like it's going
- 18:01Speaker 1: to be that way. You have obviously received the ultimate
- 18:05Speaker 1: NFL honor in being inducted into the Pro Football Hall
- 18:08Speaker 1: of Fame, and a couple of years ago you were
- 18:10Speaker 1: named to the NFL's one hundred anniversary All Time Team.
- 18:13Speaker 1: But does this honor feel a little bit different because
- 18:17Speaker 1: it is the team you played for? It certainly does.
- 18:20Speaker 1: I mean this, I played my entire career here. This
- 18:23Speaker 1: is my home. You know, we've been here forty one
- 18:26Speaker 1: years now. I mean it's like, you know, when I
- 18:28Speaker 1: go back to southern California, still feels like this is
- 18:31Speaker 1: where I'm from. But we come back here and this
- 18:33Speaker 1: is home. You know, our kids and grandkids and long
- 18:36Speaker 1: time friends are here. So it is special because you know,
- 18:40Speaker 1: first of all, the gratefulness that I have I shared
- 18:43Speaker 1: earlier when Mike Brown was talking about him and Paul,
- 18:46Speaker 1: his dad and Pete sitting around watching that eighty Rose Bowl.
- 18:50Speaker 1: I had no clue if I'd even be drafted oruld
- 18:52Speaker 1: get a chance to go to an NFL camp. And
- 18:54Speaker 1: the fact that the Brown family and the Bengals took
- 18:57Speaker 1: a shot, they drafted me and gave me a chance.
- 19:00Speaker 1: I mean, that's why it's even more special that we
- 19:03Speaker 1: live in Cincinnati. I got to play all thirteen years
- 19:05Speaker 1: with the Bengals, and when from what I understand, more
- 19:08Speaker 1: than half the teams had failed me, said no way,
- 19:11Speaker 1: we want to touch this guy damn as good. And
- 19:14Speaker 1: not only did the Bengals draft me, but with the
- 19:16Speaker 1: third pick in the entire draft. It is very very
- 19:19Speaker 1: special that now you know this is happening. You know
- 19:21Speaker 1: we live here the team I played my whole career
- 19:24Speaker 1: for and is very very special. All Right, this conversation
- 19:28Speaker 1: is largely about the Ring of Honor. But the draft
- 19:30Speaker 1: is three weeks away, and I think people would scream
- 19:33Speaker 1: at me if I didn't ask you a few questions
- 19:35Speaker 1: about that. What do you think of Piney sewell, Rashaan Slater,
- 19:40Speaker 1: if you've studied either of these guys, and the possibility
- 19:42Speaker 1: of taking an offensive lineman fifth overall, well, you know,
- 19:46Speaker 1: I'm excited possibility of taking an old lineman with that
- 19:49Speaker 1: fifth pick. I know we signed Riley Reef and he's
- 19:52Speaker 1: an excellent lineman. That to me, that's a piece of
- 19:55Speaker 1: a puzzle that they can continue to put together. In Slater,
- 20:00Speaker 1: I'm not that familiar with I've watched Pinna quite a
- 20:02Speaker 1: bit of course, you know him being a Pac twelve guy,
- 20:06Speaker 1: and you know them beating up on my trojans as
- 20:08Speaker 1: much as they did, So I would not be disappointed
- 20:11Speaker 1: at all if suel Pine ended up wearing the stripes
- 20:16Speaker 1: going from that crazy green and yellow or whatever they
- 20:19Speaker 1: were up there. But no, I would be excited. If
- 20:24Speaker 1: you know, I'm in my mind, I'm already thinking of
- 20:26Speaker 1: different combinations along that offensive line. If you get a
- 20:29Speaker 1: guy like Pinnay, you know, and you have Jonah coming
- 20:32Speaker 1: back and healthy and he's got that experience, and now
- 20:34Speaker 1: you got Riley Reid, then you got the other guys
- 20:36Speaker 1: that are still there, you know, Cephila and the guys
- 20:39Speaker 1: like that Hopkins coming back from the injury. So uh yeah,
- 20:42Speaker 1: I would be I'd be thrilled if they you know,
- 20:45Speaker 1: I know there's a lot of talk about this pretty
- 20:47Speaker 1: good wide receiver, and I'm thinking, oh my goodness, come on,
- 20:50Speaker 1: I think we have enough weapons. Let's get Joe Burrow protected,
- 20:53Speaker 1: give him an opportunity not to worry about getting a hit,
- 20:56Speaker 1: and let him utilize you know, te Higgins and all
- 20:58Speaker 1: the other guys that he has. But yeah, I be
- 21:01Speaker 1: interesting to see what happens as a come draft day.
- 21:04Speaker 1: From what you've seen a piney sewell, what stands out
- 21:07Speaker 1: just a big kid, big kid who is flexible and
- 21:11Speaker 1: you know he can get out in space and move
- 21:12Speaker 1: extremely well. I mean that to me, that's the thing
- 21:16Speaker 1: that impresses me. You know, strength and arms length and
- 21:20Speaker 1: that's that's all good, but if you can get out there.
- 21:22Speaker 1: I think he's bigger than I thought he was. I
- 21:26Speaker 1: don't know. I think he was three. I'm not sure
- 21:28Speaker 1: exact way, but I thought he's about three fifteen, three twenty.
- 21:30Speaker 1: He might be a little bigger than that. I think
- 21:32Speaker 1: it's closer to three thirty. Yeah, that kind of flexibility
- 21:35Speaker 1: and movement exactly. And that's what impresses me about a
- 21:39Speaker 1: big guy playing left tackle is that you know their
- 21:41Speaker 1: ability to move out in space. And I've seen that
- 21:43Speaker 1: with him. And and he's a competitor. I mean he
- 21:46Speaker 1: is a competitor. He gets after you. And from what
- 21:49Speaker 1: I understand never met the kid a young man, he's
- 21:53Speaker 1: supposed to be just a phenomenal young man, a man
- 21:56Speaker 1: of character and you know, great work ethic. So you know,
- 22:00Speaker 1: again I'm going by what I've heard and what i've read,
- 22:03Speaker 1: but I'm going a lot. By what I've seen when
- 22:06Speaker 1: I watch him on television during the game, it sounds
- 22:10Speaker 1: like if he's the pick, that he would probably begin
- 22:14Speaker 1: his career with a year at guard, since Riley Reef
- 22:17Speaker 1: was signed for a year to play right tackle in
- 22:19Speaker 1: all likelihood, would that be difficult in your opinion? I
- 22:23Speaker 1: don't think so, you know, I think I think that
- 22:27Speaker 1: would be good. I think that would be good. And
- 22:28Speaker 1: I think with someone with that athleticism and that ability,
- 22:32Speaker 1: I would imagine it shouldn't be that difficult. But you know,
- 22:36Speaker 1: just thinking of that, that combination, I mean, do you
- 22:39Speaker 1: you know, play him next to Jonah? Do you move him,
- 22:41Speaker 1: you know, Jonah inside him? I mean you can kind
- 22:44Speaker 1: of mess with that and then check that out, you know,
- 22:46Speaker 1: because now you've got that right tackle that is he's uh.
- 22:50Speaker 1: I mean, you know what you've gotten with him. He's
- 22:52Speaker 1: been very, very successful and he's pretty good. So and
- 22:55Speaker 1: Riley Reef sou But no, I don't think it would.
- 22:58Speaker 1: It shouldn't be that difficult. And I'm I'm going by experience.
- 23:02Speaker 1: I don't know if you remember, if you're my last
- 23:04Speaker 1: year here, I played one game at left guard, and
- 23:07Speaker 1: I enjoyed that I enjoyed it immensely. I don't remember
- 23:12Speaker 1: that you played a game at left guard. Well, I
- 23:15Speaker 1: think we had some guys hurt and I said, you
- 23:17Speaker 1: know what, I'll play left guard, you know, and to
- 23:20Speaker 1: have a guy on each side every single play was
- 23:23Speaker 1: a nice feeling. It was, you know, plus the you know,
- 23:26Speaker 1: the guy is closer to you. You do have to,
- 23:28Speaker 1: you know, make sure that you're a little quicker setting
- 23:31Speaker 1: and stuff. But I think with someone like Pinney, who's
- 23:35Speaker 1: you know, has that athleticism and it appears that he
- 23:38Speaker 1: has that quick twitch and stuff, I think he could
- 23:41Speaker 1: be able to handle that one more offensive line question.
- 23:44Speaker 1: How significant is the return of Frank Pollock in your opinion? Well,
- 23:48Speaker 1: you know, I'm not one to you know, once the
- 23:51Speaker 1: staffs in place, you know, I encourage them, I support him.
- 23:55Speaker 1: But when I saw that Frank Pollock was coming back,
- 23:59Speaker 1: I was pretty excited. I saw what he did three
- 24:02Speaker 1: years ago when he was here, a technician, not afraid
- 24:07Speaker 1: to get in your face. I think that line might
- 24:10Speaker 1: have been is physical in the last probably five six
- 24:13Speaker 1: seven years, as I've seen here, and if I'm not mistaken,
- 24:17Speaker 1: I think Joe Mixon might have had his best year
- 24:19Speaker 1: that year rushing the football. I'm just saying, you know,
- 24:23Speaker 1: but so I think that's I'm excited about Frank coming
- 24:26Speaker 1: back and the fact that, you know, he does have
- 24:30Speaker 1: some really good technique. I watched him what he's teaching,
- 24:33Speaker 1: and then he is a coach that wants you to
- 24:36Speaker 1: be physical and you know, all but the size between
- 24:40Speaker 1: him and Jim Jim McNally, I think there's some similarities there. Uh.
- 24:44Speaker 1: You know, Jimmy was a guy that was a great
- 24:45Speaker 1: technical coach, but he wanted you to be physical the
- 24:49Speaker 1: entire play and that's the way he taught us. So
- 24:52Speaker 1: h you know, I'm looking forward to see what you know,
- 24:55Speaker 1: Jonah and the guys do under Frank's tuligion, and I
- 24:59Speaker 1: am looking forward to going to games at Paul Brown
- 25:02Speaker 1: Stadium and looking up and seeing the name Muno's and
- 25:06Speaker 1: the number seventy eight displayed for all time. Congratulations on
- 25:11Speaker 1: this well deserved honor of being an initial member of
- 25:14Speaker 1: the Ring of Honor. Well, Dan, thank you so much.
- 25:17Speaker 1: I appreciate it, and I'm excited. Not only am I
- 25:20Speaker 1: excited to see that up there, but I'm excited to
- 25:23Speaker 1: go to the games this year, which I did not
- 25:25Speaker 1: attend one game last year, and to see fans, a
- 25:28Speaker 1: lot of fans in the stands, that's what I'm excited.
- 25:31Speaker 1: And then they kind of occasionally look up and see
- 25:33Speaker 1: that there amen to that. Thank you so much for
- 25:37Speaker 1: your time. I appreciate it. Thanks Dan, always a pleasure.
