Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Hey, everyone, how's it going. My name is Scott Anderson
- 0:02Speaker 1: and I'm the singer for Finger eleven.
- 0:05Speaker 2: Beautiful Scott, thanks for joining us today.
- 0:07Speaker 1: Brother, it's my pleasure.
- 0:10Speaker 2: Finger eleven will be releasing your new album last night
- 0:13Speaker 2: on Earthlub maybe the seventh fat, which isn't far away
- 0:16Speaker 2: at all now. So how are you feeling.
- 0:19Speaker 1: I'm feeling Uh, I'm feeling good, nervous. I mean, I
- 0:23Speaker 1: felt everything there is to feel about this album. It's
- 0:25Speaker 1: it's been a long journey and I'm so happy that
- 0:28Speaker 1: it's finally coming to an end and it's going to
- 0:31Speaker 1: materialize in an actual record. I'm thrilled.
- 0:35Speaker 2: Yeah, it is your first studio album in over a decade.
- 0:39Speaker 2: Might like you guys have been there, done that, You've
- 0:41Speaker 2: got your set fan base. But was there any extra pressure?
- 0:44Speaker 2: Is it sort of like a comeback album being so long.
- 0:47Speaker 1: I think there's a lot of pressure because of the time.
- 0:50Speaker 1: You know, it's like, okay, well you can't just put
- 0:51Speaker 1: out anything. There's been so much time that's gone by,
- 0:55Speaker 1: and so that that I think that hung over our
- 0:57Speaker 1: heads a little bit, But it doesn't change the day
- 1:00Speaker 1: to day, you know, writing where it's like Okay, well,
- 1:08Speaker 1: we're still going to try to do the best we
- 1:10Speaker 1: can where that's what that's what Finger eleven does. We're
- 1:12Speaker 1: going to get in a room and try to make
- 1:14Speaker 1: the whatever idea we're working on the very best it
- 1:17Speaker 1: can be. So we did that over and over to
- 1:20Speaker 1: many songs, and uh, you know, there's until until somebody
- 1:24Speaker 1: gave us a hard deadline. You know. It used to
- 1:26Speaker 1: be you were in a studio that you would rent
- 1:28Speaker 1: for a month or two, and then when that time
- 1:31Speaker 1: ran out, you were done the record. There's there's no
- 1:34Speaker 1: there's no more resources left, You're done, you know. So
- 1:37Speaker 1: it was kind of the polar opposite. This time, we
- 1:39Speaker 1: had all the time in the world, and so we
- 1:41Speaker 1: just refined ideas over and over and over. But you know, yeah,
- 1:45Speaker 1: at a certain point, it's like, okay, let's put out
- 1:47Speaker 1: a record. Let's do it.
- 1:49Speaker 2: It's not a human nights you made that individually and collectively,
- 1:53Speaker 2: the whole band would have changed quite Bobchin years. So
- 1:56Speaker 2: was that noticeable during the creative and the recording process.
- 2:00Speaker 1: I think we're all different people, but there's you know,
- 2:04Speaker 1: there's there's you know, even in live shows, I think
- 2:08Speaker 1: we all feel like we're like seventeen year old kids again.
- 2:11Speaker 1: You know, there's something like there's all kinds of different
- 2:15Speaker 1: we're all in different situations, but the band has remained
- 2:18Speaker 1: you know, all the way through those those things. So
- 2:22Speaker 1: I don't know, I I feel like, well, I haven't
- 2:26Speaker 1: this is this is you know, I can look back
- 2:27Speaker 1: and go, wow, I've I've never done anything this long.
- 2:31Speaker 1: You know. My last real job was a was a
- 2:32Speaker 1: gas station attendant. So you know, like I've been able
- 2:36Speaker 1: to hang on to this job, and it's I guess
- 2:38Speaker 1: it's a real anchor you know for me and I.
- 2:41Speaker 1: I it's you know, at our at its heart, you know,
- 2:44Speaker 1: like we we we still you know, it's it's it's
- 2:47Speaker 1: a wonderful feeling to kind of get together and try
- 2:50Speaker 1: to and make something with your buddies and to still
- 2:53Speaker 1: enjoy that. That's awesome. That's I mean, that's uh, that's
- 2:58Speaker 1: worth that's worth it in itself, you know. But to
- 3:02Speaker 1: actually be you know, proud of you know, every single
- 3:05Speaker 1: track on this record and have it come out and
- 3:07Speaker 1: have the band be one hundred percent happy at this part,
- 3:09Speaker 1: at this time in their career, it's very satisfying. And
- 3:12Speaker 1: you know, we're excited to share it finally.
- 3:15Speaker 2: Yeah, the answer to this next question. You know the
- 3:18Speaker 2: answer to this next question, but your fans don't. So
- 3:21Speaker 2: tell us a bit more about the album from a
- 3:22Speaker 2: musical point of view and what you're gone for.
- 3:26Speaker 1: Well, I think we we knew it had to kick
- 3:31Speaker 1: some ass. We knew that, you know, we would, there
- 3:35Speaker 1: had to be some some you know, finger Lemon is
- 3:37Speaker 1: known for a few things. You know, there's you know,
- 3:41Speaker 1: there there's there's there's heavy tracks. There's like the massive
- 3:46Speaker 1: disco rock dance track, and there's ballads. You know, like
- 3:49Speaker 1: we're not really afraid like every you know, every every
- 3:53Speaker 1: genre is just as important. But you know, at a
- 3:56Speaker 1: certain point, you know, finger Levon is known for like,
- 3:59Speaker 1: you know, a riff heavy band that's you know, kind
- 4:04Speaker 1: of begging you to turn it up. So there's the
- 4:11Speaker 1: The only other thing I was going for was to
- 4:13Speaker 1: not just not be so damn negative this time, you know,
- 4:17Speaker 1: try to like have heavy stuff that's a little more fun,
- 4:23Speaker 1: you know, as far as subject matter goes, just but
- 4:28Speaker 1: you know, there's there's a lot of heavy stuff and
- 4:31Speaker 1: then there's like a you know, the title track Last
- 4:34Speaker 1: Night on Earth is like a moodier tune as a
- 4:37Speaker 1: song called Laughing at the Storm, which is you know,
- 4:39Speaker 1: I think a really great a really great track that's uh,
- 4:45Speaker 1: it's got this real ominous feel to it. But you
- 4:48Speaker 1: know they all combined to you know, make a really
- 4:52Speaker 1: great musical ride. We we obsess over, you know, the tracking,
- 4:58Speaker 1: specifically Rick, the guitar arst in the band Hill. You know,
- 5:02Speaker 1: we discussed for weeks the running order, you know, just
- 5:07Speaker 1: in case people listen to music the way we used to,
- 5:10Speaker 1: just in case, and and you know, Rick is a
- 5:13Speaker 1: giant vinyl collector, and so is James, and so they
- 5:17Speaker 1: had to take those matters into it. They had to
- 5:20Speaker 1: take that idea into consideration as well. So it was all,
- 5:26Speaker 1: you know, it's all meticulously curated by the band, and
- 5:31Speaker 1: it's a finger eleven record. It's it's it's dynamic, and
- 5:35Speaker 1: it's meant to be listened to, uh, front to back,
- 5:38Speaker 1: but it's mostly meant to just kind of be enjoyed.
- 5:40Speaker 1: If you're a if you're a music fan, Yeah.
- 5:43Speaker 2: And you've released the singles Adrenaline and Blue Sky Mystery,
- 5:46Speaker 2: So would you say that they're a good sonic representation
- 5:48Speaker 2: of the whole album? Or they just scratch a s.
- 5:52Speaker 1: I think so those are those are two pretty high
- 5:54Speaker 1: energy songs. There's a song called the Mountain which has
- 5:57Speaker 1: a ton of you know, which again is a lot
- 6:01Speaker 1: of fun and it's it definitely you know, the rock
- 6:07Speaker 1: side of Finger Leven is represented on this record. Ah,
- 6:12Speaker 1: really well, but there's a lot of you know, I
- 6:17Speaker 1: think you're gonna hear it's a confident band, you know.
- 6:20Speaker 1: There's it doesn't sound like we've been mothballed for ten years,
- 6:24Speaker 1: and it's true, you know we've been We've still we've
- 6:26Speaker 1: been working on these out uh these these songs and
- 6:31Speaker 1: just you know, you work on ideas and then the
- 6:33Speaker 1: cream rises to the top, and then you rewrite those
- 6:36Speaker 1: so they're better, and then do it again and again
- 6:38Speaker 1: and again and uh so there's there's a high level
- 6:45Speaker 1: of quality as far as the songs. There's not a
- 6:47Speaker 1: lot of like, oh well, maybe we should just put
- 6:49Speaker 1: this song on there. That didn't that didn't occur on
- 6:53Speaker 1: on on on this project. So you know, it's it's
- 6:59Speaker 1: I think I think you'll be able to hear it.
- 7:01Speaker 1: There's it's it's sonically a ton of fun to listen to.
- 7:06Speaker 2: I'll tell you earlier that I'll listen to the full
- 7:08Speaker 2: album this morning before the interview, and the one thing
- 7:10Speaker 2: that really stood out to me is like it's got
- 7:12Speaker 2: a very eighties and nineties nostalgic rock sort of vibe.
- 7:15Speaker 2: It everything just seems bigger with more focus on production.
- 7:19Speaker 2: Am I corrected sign that.
- 7:22Speaker 1: I think you're right. You know, we're Finger eleven likes
- 7:26Speaker 1: the Swing for the Fences sonically, you know, we tend
- 7:29Speaker 1: to make big music. We have a producer in the band,
- 7:34Speaker 1: you know, as well as you know the the other
- 7:37Speaker 1: members themselves, you know. But like Steve the drummer, has
- 7:42Speaker 1: basically produced this record, and he's he's just interested in
- 7:49Speaker 1: sonic perfection, you know. And I've worked with a lot
- 7:54Speaker 1: of producers, and sometimes it's just it's really hard to
- 7:58Speaker 1: to get comfortable, especially you're doing vocals and it's just
- 8:01Speaker 1: you and them, you know, trying to you know, when
- 8:04Speaker 1: you're you're you're you're singing these words for the first
- 8:06Speaker 1: time and you're hoping it's hitting, and you've got to
- 8:09Speaker 1: trust that person on the other side of the glass
- 8:11Speaker 1: to tell you if it is or not, and what
- 8:13Speaker 1: you can do better or you know, or which which
- 8:17Speaker 1: direction you should go and Steve and I have been
- 8:20Speaker 1: you know, we've had a great working relationship for the
- 8:24Speaker 1: last record in the you know, for the last ten years.
- 8:28Speaker 1: He's a new guy and he's been in the band
- 8:29Speaker 1: for ten years. That's that's that's mind blowing. But uh yeah,
- 8:33Speaker 1: so there's some I think that's where our main influences are.
- 8:39Speaker 1: You know, eighties nineties, you know that that those were
- 8:43Speaker 1: you know, coming up if you were lucky enough to
- 8:45Speaker 1: kind of go through that era, there's there's some of
- 8:49Speaker 1: a lot of the music that came out with just
- 8:51Speaker 1: absolutely untouchable. Of course, of course there's really good stuff
- 8:55Speaker 1: coming out now, but man, oh man, we got we
- 8:59Speaker 1: got treated, and to be there when it was coming out,
- 9:04Speaker 1: you know, pretty special.
- 9:06Speaker 2: Especially all read it quite from Rick where he said,
- 9:09Speaker 2: as we were making Last Night on Earth, there was
- 9:11Speaker 2: this feeling that we were making a big rock record.
- 9:14Speaker 2: We've done that early in our career. Then we beat
- 9:16Speaker 2: away from it, but it was time to go back
- 9:18Speaker 2: and embrace that bigness of the sound. Like you can
- 9:21Speaker 2: understand that as a musician, but for other people looking in,
- 9:24Speaker 2: what are you actually mean by that? What's he mean
- 9:26Speaker 2: by the bigness of sound.
- 9:29Speaker 1: I think, and not be you know, to to really
- 9:33Speaker 1: go for it, you know, to to to keep those
- 9:36Speaker 1: guitars turned up. Maybe it's maybe like rock music has
- 9:39Speaker 1: fallen out out of fashion maybe, but I don't think
- 9:43Speaker 1: we care. I think it's you know, that's that's the
- 9:45Speaker 1: stuff that we that that still resonates for us. And
- 9:51Speaker 1: I think the idea to kind of do your best
- 9:54Speaker 1: to not censor yourself and go like, okay, do I
- 9:57Speaker 1: you know, do I like this idea like let's not
- 9:59Speaker 1: let's stay about it a lot, but let's not overthink
- 10:01Speaker 1: it and you know, let's just really go for it.
- 10:04Speaker 1: You know, there's there's awesome there's there's giant guitars on here,
- 10:09Speaker 1: there's all kinds of like wild harmonies. You know, we're
- 10:14Speaker 1: having like we're having a lot of fun creating big music,
- 10:18Speaker 1: and you know that's what you're gonna hear.
- 10:21Speaker 2: I'm not sure if this was intentional or not, or
- 10:23Speaker 2: it might even just be me in the way I think,
- 10:26Speaker 2: but the very first few seconds of Adrenaline, which is
- 10:28Speaker 2: also the album opener, it reminded me of the song
- 10:31Speaker 2: Underneath the Radar, which, like it subconsciously took me back
- 10:35Speaker 2: to that era of music without actually having to think
- 10:37Speaker 2: about it. Like it's kind of like subliminal advertising for cocaine,
- 10:40Speaker 2: but legal.
- 10:43Speaker 1: Right to say like, Okay, look this is where we're going.
- 10:46Speaker 1: This is you know, be prepared, you know, strap in. Yeah,
- 10:49Speaker 1: it's it's important for us to uh, you know, like
- 10:52Speaker 1: when we're writing music, it's like the beginning, middle, and
- 10:56Speaker 1: the end are all you know, they're they're all just
- 10:57Speaker 1: as important. And to have you know, every single you know,
- 11:02Speaker 1: every hit song has an identifiable beginning and that's that's
- 11:07Speaker 1: that's that's a hard thing to tack on, you know,
- 11:09Speaker 1: but it is something you got to think about. You know,
- 11:12Speaker 1: there's and and we did and we do you know,
- 11:15Speaker 1: there's there's there's a lot of that. So you know,
- 11:18Speaker 1: we we try to we try to edit, you know,
- 11:22Speaker 1: to the point where it's like you you leave you know,
- 11:26Speaker 1: you leave all the the fad on the floor and
- 11:29Speaker 1: you just try to like get to the get to
- 11:31Speaker 1: the good stuff as fast as you can and try
- 11:34Speaker 1: to justify every single part, you know, and I think
- 11:37Speaker 1: that makes for a great song and that makes you
- 11:39Speaker 1: want to listen to it again.
- 11:41Speaker 2: It was really cool because there's only fleet like I
- 11:42Speaker 2: would have only been about two seconds, but my mind
- 11:45Speaker 2: just straight away went to that song, which gave me
- 11:47Speaker 2: an idea of what the album was meant to be overall.
- 11:51Speaker 2: In some ways, it was like it was it was
- 11:53Speaker 2: one of those moments. It was a very very different
- 11:55Speaker 2: sort of moment. But the song gets changed off of
- 11:57Speaker 2: that and it was not the right of it put
- 12:00Speaker 2: me in that sort of mode of music. It's hard
- 12:02Speaker 2: to describe. But if you did it on purpose, well done.
- 12:04Speaker 2: If you did it accidentally, well done.
- 12:07Speaker 1: Yeah. If we if we did it on purpose, this
- 12:09Speaker 1: news to me.
- 12:12Speaker 2: Well it's worked on one person.
- 12:15Speaker 1: Yeah, Like I'm in charge of the lyrics ability, I
- 12:17Speaker 1: don't know, man.
- 12:19Speaker 2: You had Richard Patrick from Filter appear on Blue Sky
- 12:23Speaker 2: Mystery and for a change made like it's a modern
- 12:25Speaker 2: collaboration that actually adds to the song, Like it doesn't
- 12:28Speaker 2: feel like it's there as a as a bi agenda
- 12:31Speaker 2: light And I understand that was the first time you
- 12:33Speaker 2: guys worked together for despite both being around for every
- 12:36Speaker 2: thirty years.
- 12:38Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, we had never We had never we had
- 12:40Speaker 1: never met, and you know, Finger Level doesn't do a
- 12:44Speaker 1: lot of collaborating, right, but it was we were trying
- 12:49Speaker 1: to entertain the idea like what if, Like what's a
- 12:52Speaker 1: good idea, what would be a dream project? You know,
- 12:56Speaker 1: And there were a few people that you know, on
- 12:58Speaker 1: on a pretty short list, and Richard Patrick, you know,
- 13:02Speaker 1: was gracious enough to take our call and he really
- 13:09Speaker 1: liked the song and we got to talking. I talked
- 13:11Speaker 1: to Richard Patrick for about forty five minutes, you know,
- 13:14Speaker 1: and he's so easy to talk to.
- 13:16Speaker 2: He's great, and.
- 13:20Speaker 1: You know, he understood the song and he liked it.
- 13:22Speaker 1: And we had to do the session remotely, and he
- 13:26Speaker 1: really it's I admire his delivery because it's hard when
- 13:30Speaker 1: it's not your melody, it's not your cadence, it's not
- 13:34Speaker 1: your words, you know, but you you have, you know,
- 13:38Speaker 1: a handful of hours to really sell it, and he,
- 13:41Speaker 1: you know, he did and he was also he was
- 13:43Speaker 1: also cool enough to come and film a video with
- 13:45Speaker 1: us too, and that was a whirlwind moment. It was
- 13:49Speaker 1: he jumped right in and we we sang together and
- 13:52Speaker 1: we'd never met, and it was it was a total trip.
- 13:58Speaker 1: And I think it's I think he had a very
- 14:02Speaker 1: good time. And the hope is that we collaborate further,
- 14:08Speaker 1: like we might even there's talk about going out on
- 14:10Speaker 1: the road together and that would be so wonderful. So
- 14:13Speaker 1: we'll see what the future brings.
- 14:15Speaker 2: Yeah, you know, and you've also had done a very
- 14:17Speaker 2: brave thing by having the title track, which by proxy
- 14:21Speaker 2: makes it his focused track of the album. But you've
- 14:22Speaker 2: got it as an acoustic sort of number line. It
- 14:25Speaker 2: works really well. But was there ever a discussion that
- 14:27Speaker 2: maybe that might have been a little bit too risky.
- 14:31Speaker 1: Yeah, it was a last minute decision. We had a
- 14:34Speaker 1: different name for the album, and it was a it
- 14:41Speaker 1: was a it was a pitch from either Steve or Rick,
- 14:45Speaker 1: you know, kind of saying, hey, listen, what if what
- 14:48Speaker 1: if we called the album last Night on Earth? You know,
- 14:51Speaker 1: and it seemed to resonate with the artwork that James
- 14:54Speaker 1: was working on. You know, it had this idea where
- 14:56Speaker 1: it's like, you know, there's there's this kind of like
- 14:59Speaker 1: interplanetary you know imagery that the album, the album art
- 15:05Speaker 1: evokes for me, and that put the song in a
- 15:09Speaker 1: whole new context. And I mean it is a big
- 15:12Speaker 1: it's a wild idea you know for a band that
- 15:15Speaker 1: is known for its like loud guitars to go like no, no, no,
- 15:18Speaker 1: this song, you know, this This album is called Last
- 15:21Speaker 1: Night on Earth, but that's figure eleven for you. You know,
- 15:24Speaker 1: the mellow stuff is just as important as the the
- 15:28Speaker 1: loud stuff. And I mean, I think fans that have
- 15:30Speaker 1: been around for a minute they understand that they're gonna
- 15:33Speaker 1: get all kinds of different sonic landscapes on every record.
- 15:38Speaker 1: So you know, yeah, risky move, but it's it felt
- 15:44Speaker 1: like the right move, and it still feels like the
- 15:46Speaker 1: right move, and you know it's well, it's too late
- 15:49Speaker 1: to change it.
- 15:50Speaker 2: Now.
- 15:50Speaker 1: That's the title of the record.
- 15:52Speaker 2: Could I say that, Mike, Because when I first read that,
- 15:54Speaker 2: I just thought like, well, that's that's pretty fucking risky.
- 15:57Speaker 2: And I listening, it's like these guys nailed it. You've
- 16:02Speaker 2: come back and you've showed that you're not going to
- 16:04Speaker 2: come back after ten years and do what's expected of
- 16:07Speaker 2: you and try and try to try to make a
- 16:09Speaker 2: bigger Just come in. You're doing your own thing, and
- 16:11Speaker 2: if you're going to come for the ride, jump in.
- 16:13Speaker 2: If you don't, we'll see you later.
- 16:15Speaker 1: That is that is singer eleven to a t. You know,
- 16:18Speaker 1: for better or worse, that's the you know, that's the
- 16:20Speaker 1: secrets us We're going to do our own thing. And
- 16:24Speaker 1: you know, every once in a while, you know people
- 16:27Speaker 1: they come along for the road. You're right, it's great.
- 16:30Speaker 2: Yeah. Now, before I let you go, bro, I've got
- 16:32Speaker 2: a new segment i've started called photo Bomb. So basically,
- 16:35Speaker 2: before we've got a chat, I've gone through your social
- 16:37Speaker 2: media and I found a few photos that I want
- 16:39Speaker 2: you to tell me a little bit more about. Okay,
- 16:42Speaker 2: one here like this looks right, this looks a lot
- 16:47Speaker 2: like you, but with hair.
- 16:50Speaker 3: Oh okay, so oh my glad. Okay, so this is
- 16:56Speaker 3: that's me with glasses too. So this must be somewhere
- 17:01Speaker 3: around maybe nineteen ninety six, ninety seven.
- 17:07Speaker 1: And there's Rick too. Yeah, so we are I think
- 17:12Speaker 1: Rick and I are doing an interview in front of
- 17:14Speaker 1: a tour bus that's not our tour bus.
- 17:17Speaker 4: We thought we'd be funny and pretend that, like, oh okay,
- 17:22Speaker 4: we'll do the interview here. We're gonna look like a
- 17:23Speaker 4: massive band and you know, God bless us.
- 17:28Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 17:28Speaker 1: So that's back when I add hair and glasses, I
- 17:30Speaker 1: mean I recently have started wearing glasses again. I actually
- 17:34Speaker 1: I missed. I missed having my glasses. It was fun
- 17:37Speaker 1: getting laser surgery and not worrying about glasses. But I do,
- 17:41Speaker 1: you know, I like the way glasses look and feel.
- 17:44Speaker 1: But yeah, old school, look at us, look at us,
- 17:46Speaker 1: young young customers the other ones.
- 17:51Speaker 2: It's not often that you see people in bands look
- 17:53Speaker 2: like they're always fanboy and over another band. But you
- 17:56Speaker 2: guys look pretty happy with this ticket.
- 18:00Speaker 1: Okay, so what's that then? Let me take a.
- 18:02Speaker 2: Look Chili Peppers.
- 18:04Speaker 1: Oh wow, okay, so that's a concert that was I
- 18:09Speaker 1: think that's that? Is that that a concert hall? Is
- 18:11Speaker 1: that what it says? There's a there was a great
- 18:13Speaker 1: venue in Toronto. Yeah, so I think that was Redhot,
- 18:17Speaker 1: Chili Peppers, Smashing Pumpkins and Pearl Jam. That was a
- 18:21Speaker 1: legendary show that if that's the actual show it was,
- 18:28Speaker 1: you know, just they I remember the Smashing Pumpkins were
- 18:32Speaker 1: not received. Well, that's how early on in their career
- 18:35Speaker 1: it was. And they really played into like the heel
- 18:40Speaker 1: persona like Billy Corgan was he seemed like he wasn't
- 18:43Speaker 1: happy to be there and that was like part of
- 18:45Speaker 1: the part of the charm. But you know, they went
- 18:47Speaker 1: on to be you know, incredible, But yeah, the the
- 18:52Speaker 1: audience was all they wanted was Chili Peppers that night.
- 18:55Speaker 2: I've seen Chili Peppers lives, so I envy you there.
- 18:59Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean so much energy, right.
- 19:03Speaker 2: Yeah, great man, great band. All right brother, but we'll
- 19:05Speaker 2: let you go to the day now. But last night
- 19:07Speaker 2: on Earth. This out November seventh then, for a first
- 19:10Speaker 2: time listening. To take it from me, it's a fucking
- 19:12Speaker 2: a sensational album, bro, So congratulations and well done and
- 19:15Speaker 2: hopefully we see you on this side of the world
- 19:17Speaker 2: playing a life soon.
- 19:19Speaker 1: Thank you so much. That really means a lot, really
- 19:21Speaker 1: appreciate that review. That's a good one man. Thank you.
