- 0:00Jon: This week on Xenomania, join us as we take a trip to meet the goodes
- 0:05of Good Boys Indie in the 2025 film.
- 0:09Good boy.
- 0:10Along the way, we'd learn that kids and dogs sea ghosts first, that Indie
- 0:17is really a very good and loyal boy, and we play a game with devastating
- 0:24consequences for the cinematic world.
- 0:27This is Xenomania.
- 0:45not.
- 0:46Ryan: You're
- 0:46Jon: I'm,
- 0:47Ryan: this game.
- 0:48It's gonna ruin our lives, supposedly.
- 0:50Like supposed to be a heartwarming episode about a dog his owner from ghosts.
- 0:58Come on now.
- 0:59Jon: I mean, if we want, if we wanna go that route.
- 1:02Indy did not succeed
- 1:05Ryan: Neither did the other dog, but you know
- 1:08Jon: in Indy is not, Indy was not successful in defending his owner,
- 1:12but, we'll, we'll come back to that.
- 1:14This game is beautiful, beautiful.
- 1:17I only made Allison get rid of two of her favorite movies ever in this game.
- 1:25Kearns: okay.
- 1:26All right.
- 1:26It's gonna be horrible.
- 1:27Jon: and I think I made it even more evil for you guys because
- 1:30I did not even choose the order.
- 1:33The pictures are in this time.
- 1:36Nope.
- 1:37Ryan: ai.
- 1:39Oh,
- 1:40Jon: They're randomized buddy.
- 1:42Kearns: John's not really big AI guy.
- 1:45Jon: Nope, they're just randomized.
- 1:47I have, I don't even know what the order's gonna be, so.
- 1:50Ryan: be bad.
- 1:51So basically with
- 1:53Jon: Yep.
- 1:54Blood bath.
- 1:55Ryan: movies are probably gonna be on top.
- 1:57Fingers crossed
- 1:59Kearns: Fingers crossed
- 2:00Jon: you think there's only gonna be three good movies on this list in this game?
- 2:04Ryan: no, no.
- 2:06Jon: And listen, we're adding, a layer.
- 2:09But let's, get to that in a little bit 'cause we have a good boy to talk about.
- 2:13Kearns: our movie this week, everybody.
- 2:15It's about a dog.
- 2:19Jon: It is about a dog.
- 2:21Kearns: than I thought I was going to.
- 2:23Jon: I did too.
- 2:24they really did a good job sort of making a dog's perspective without
- 2:28knowing what a dog's perspective is.
- 2:31Kearns: Now I was expecting first person like dog ovision, and I'm
- 2:36glad they didn't go that route.
- 2:38They, they kept it,
- 2:39Jon: Me.
- 2:39Yeah.
- 2:39Me too.
- 2:40Kearns: on the dog, and the dog was a
- 2:42Jon: Yeah.
- 2:43Yeah.
- 2:44Ryan: What
- 2:44Jon: Yeah.
- 2:45Ryan: was like the close camera angles, the like the lighting, the
- 2:49shadows, know, I mean, a dog can really see what, like black and
- 2:54white, maybe blue, yellow, I think
- 2:56Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 2:57Ryan: overall, like the whole atmosphere is like dark and
- 3:00that's what the dog is seeing.
- 3:02Jon: Yep.
- 3:03Yep.
- 3:03Ryan: that universal vibe, if that makes sense.
- 3:06Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 3:07Ryan: the shadows and the music in the background.
- 3:09And at an hour 13, it's a perfect length.
- 3:13Jon: Oh yeah.
- 3:14Yeah.
- 3:14If you go too much longer with this movie, it's, it's un almost
- 3:18unwatchable at that point.
- 3:19But an hour 13 is a perfect length.
- 3:22Kearns: which is wild.
- 3:23And it's an
- 3:24Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 3:25Kearns: expansive metaphor, but it's definitely a
- 3:26metaphor, which I always enjoy.
- 3:29There's, it's a message movie people, think,
- 3:32Jon: Yep.
- 3:32Kearns: when a Monster calls, if anybody watch that, and I Slay
- 3:36Giants, which were, it's the same
- 3:39Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 3:40Kearns: about that in a previous episode.
- 3:41That's the exact same story from two different authors.
- 3:44And they made two movies that are the same movie.
- 3:47It's wild how, like they're the exact same thing.
- 3:50but yeah, this is the same concept.
- 3:51So if you've seen those, you kind of know it's coming.
- 3:54Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 3:56And I, I like what they do with the, human faces that they're
- 4:01either unseen or obscured the whole, almost the entire movie.
- 4:06until you get to the very end.
- 4:08And then it makes sense when you can see the face.
- 4:13Kearns: Yeah,
- 4:13Jon: But we'll get to that.
- 4:14Kearns: we get rid of that early?
- 4:17Jon: I think one of the more impressive elements of this is to a really
- 4:22impressive elements of good boy.
- 4:23it's director Ben Leon Berg's first feature length film.
- 4:29And the dog is his dog.
- 4:32Ryan: cool.
- 4:32Jon: Indy is his dog.
- 4:33Indy is not a trained stage dog.
- 4:36Indy is just his dog.
- 4:37Ryan: that dog did amazing.
- 4:39Then
- 4:39Kearns: Yeah,
- 4:39Jon: He's not,
- 4:41Ryan: like,
- 4:42Jon: well let, let's see if you still think this after I give
- 4:45you this bit of information.
- 4:46This took three years to film, 400 days of filming because there
- 4:52were some days the dog wouldn't do what he wanted the dog to do.
- 4:55Kearns: thought there were breaks in between, though.
- 4:57It wasn't continuous shooting like I thought there were patches.
- 5:00Jon: Yeah.
- 5:00It was 400 days over three years,
- 5:03Kearns: that's makes sense.
- 5:04Like that's, yeah.
- 5:05Jon: so Yeah.
- 5:06Ryan: But to like release a film at 73 minutes, you know, and it, the budget
- 5:11was 70,000 and it made 8.7 million.
- 5:15like a, it's a big step and like it's, I don't know if he's
- 5:18done anything else, like he's in
- 5:21Jon: He hasn't done anything since.
- 5:23Ryan: in the right direction for his next picture.
- 5:25I mean, with the amount of money he's earned.
- 5:28Let's see what you can do
- 5:29Jon: Oh, yeah.
- 5:32Well, yeah.
- 5:33I mean, but that sometimes that's the problem for these guys, right?
- 5:36You, can do it with the small budget because there's no pressure, and then
- 5:40they get the, the, the bigger budget and they just have a, don't know what to do.
- 5:45Ryan: you can think the KET Smith way though, like you go from
- 5:47clerks and then you got like mall
- 5:49Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 5:50Ryan: which is a little higher, but like dogmas where it's like.
- 5:54Jon: Yeah, but even dogma, I don't think was a huge budget.
- 5:58I think Kevin Smith didn't get a really large budget until cop out.
- 6:04Kearns: really?
- 6:05Ryan: Wow.
- 6:06Jon: I think that was like the first time they really gave him a lot of money and
- 6:11Ryan: Willis, Tracy Morgan, I mean, fair?
- 6:14Jon: it didn't end well.
- 6:16Kearns: He tried to do, um, that Superman movie.
- 6:18I remember seeing the documentary, right?
- 6:19Didn't he try to do it with Nick
- 6:20Jon: Yeah.
- 6:21Yeah.
- 6:21It wouldn't, yeah.
- 6:23The death of Superman documentary.
- 6:24Yeah.
- 6:25Kearns: um, he
- 6:26Jon: Yeah.
- 6:26Kearns: them for stealing his villain idea and putting it in wild, wild West,
- 6:30Ryan: Yep.
- 6:31Kearns: is pretty funny.
- 6:32Kevin Smith's a g man.
- 6:33I love him.
- 6:34Jon: Yeah.
- 6:35I, he does not any of the, the times, if you could ever see him speak,
- 6:41whether it's, uh, like one of the home DVD releases or in person,
- 6:47it's probably worth doing because he, he's as good a storyteller in
- 6:52that setting as he is cinematically, and he's got so many great stories.
- 6:59Kearns: billion we've never heard too.
- 7:02Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 7:02Ryan: mean, the majority is ironically in his films.
- 7:06I mean, clerks is based on his life,
- 7:08Kearns: Yeah.
- 7:09Ryan: like when he was
- 7:10Jon: Yeah.
- 7:10Yeah.
- 7:11Absolutely.
- 7:11Ryan: minus like
- 7:13Jon: Yeah.
- 7:13Ryan: at the end.
- 7:14But that's the alternate ending.
- 7:18Jon: I we're way off on a tangent, but I'll finish it.
- 7:22I'm so glad that's not the ending that they went with.
- 7:26That would've, it would've like it, it would've changed
- 7:30that whole movie irreparably.
- 7:32Ryan: mean the, so the question is, have you seen the film with that ending?
- 7:38Okay.
- 7:39Okay.
- 7:39Jon: It's on one of the, it's on at least one of the DVD releases,
- 7:42and it's, it's such a downer,
- 7:45Ryan: Like
- 7:46Jon: like, like clerks kind of, it kind of ends on a downer to begin
- 7:51with, with the whole ca, the whole Caitlyn, Bree thing and all that and,
- 7:56Ryan: I mean,
- 7:57Kearns: Yeah,
- 7:57Ryan: guy
- 7:57Kearns: happened.
- 7:58It's cool.
- 8:01The cat's, uh, busy back there.
- 8:03Jon: but
- 8:05Ryan: chilling out.
- 8:06Jon: Yeah.
- 8:06He's standing on the tortoises right now.
- 8:09Kearns: yeah, man.
- 8:10Uh, back to good boy.
- 8:11It's not a Kevin Smith feature.
- 8:13Jon: Yeah.
- 8:14Back to, back to, good boy.
- 8:16Kearns: a little bit.
- 8:16It brought me back to watchers.
- 8:18Um, anybody remember the Kuntz movie watchers or the Golden Retriever Einstein?
- 8:24Ryan: I haven't seen it
- 8:25Kearns: That's the
- 8:25Jon: I didn't see it.
- 8:26Kearns: read the book, the book's actually worthy, it's a, uh, a
- 8:29golden retriever's being experimented on in a, some sort of facility.
- 8:33And so is this monster and the monster's jealous of the retriever.
- 8:36'cause everybody loves the fucking golden retriever.
- 8:38And they both get, they both escape.
- 8:40And the dog is crazy smart.
- 8:43That's like what they were doing to it.
- 8:46And the monster wants to kill the dog because jealous.
- 8:49So it, the dog links up with a human and they're friends and they become, you
- 8:53know, I guess you can't say it's his pet because the dog's smarter than the guy.
- 8:57But, uh, yeah, and you get a lot of dog perspective throughout the
- 9:01whole thing with like, the dog knows the monsters over there, the guy
- 9:05doesn't know the monsters over there.
- 9:06So it really brought me back to watchers from back then.
- 9:10I'm thinking it's called watchers.
- 9:11Um, I could be wrong now because.
- 9:14No, it is Watchers.
- 9:15Phantoms is the other one.
- 9:16That's the other Kunin.
- 9:18Um, but yeah, that brought me back to it a bit.
- 9:21And if anybody out there in the universe remembers watchers,
- 9:23please, please let us know because Damnit, I need some validation.
- 9:28Ryan: I mean, I believe you.
- 9:29I'll put it on, you know I've heard of it.
- 9:31I believe John's heard of it.
- 9:33I wanna watch it.
- 9:34But
- 9:34Kearns: The
- 9:35Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 9:35Kearns: The movie's.
- 9:36Okay.
- 9:37The book is good.
- 9:38Ryan: Is it better than Phantoms?
- 9:40Kearns: The book,
- 9:41Ryan: no.
- 9:42The
- 9:42Kearns: the book is better than Phantoms.
- 9:43The movie is not better than Phantoms.
- 9:48Ryan: I mean the book Phantoms
- 9:49Kearns: That's arguable actually, Phantom's, the book
- 9:51is pretty good too, actually.
- 9:53this is
- 9:54Ryan: excellent.
- 9:54Kearns: og Um, Watchers is og Kunz Phantoms is the end of that era.
- 9:59So it's, it's a little different.
- 10:01But anyway, back to good boy,
- 10:05Jon: Back to good boy, which, so good boy really works on the, theory
- 10:09that dogs and kids see ghosts first
- 10:12Kearns: Yeah.
- 10:12Ryan: Yes,
- 10:13Jon: In the case of Good boy, the dog is the only one who really sees anything.
- 10:18Ryan: an interesting concept, how they reveal the ghost.
- 10:20This is like in the shadows and
- 10:22Kearns: Yeah.
- 10:23Ryan: like
- 10:24Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 10:25Ryan: I like, I was expecting to see
- 10:26Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 10:28Ryan: Ghastly figures, but like to see like the figure in the shadow
- 10:32and then maybe a little bit of the face, it was a different take,
- 10:36but I feel like that's what a
- 10:37Jon: Yeah.
- 10:38Ryan: seeing.
- 10:39know, even a kid is like an embodiment of something, not the full thing.
- 10:43Kearns: Mm-hmm.
- 10:43Jon: yeah, I, I like that element.
- 10:45I like what I really think He does a lot of good stuff with his Nova
- 10:49Scotia duck tolling retriever.
- 10:52Kearns: That's what that is.
- 10:53Jon: Yes, I looked it up.
- 10:55Yes.
- 10:55I learned a little bit about Nova Scotia duck tolling retrievers.
- 10:59If you guys wanna know.
- 11:01Kearns: I.
- 11:02Jon: Very, they're the smallest of the retrievers.
- 11:06They tend to be very affectionate and good with kids.
- 11:10They're good hunters, hikers, campers, and swimmers because they have webbed feet.
- 11:16Kearns: that's cool.
- 11:18Jon: Right.
- 11:19That's a pretty cool dog.
- 11:21Kearns: dog.
- 11:21That's a good boy.
- 11:23Jon: That's a pretty cool dog.
- 11:24That's a good boy.
- 11:26Kearns: And now we're, gonna be in the market for a dog at some point.
- 11:29I want a golden, but I could, definitely settle for a Nova Scotia.
- 11:32Ryan: A Nova Scotia.
- 11:33Watch next, next
- 11:34Jon: I mean, they're,
- 11:35Ryan: His name's Indy.
- 11:37Did you
- 11:37Jon: they,
- 11:37Ryan: him?
- 11:38Jon: they are often mistaken for golden retrievers.
- 11:41Kearns: smaller.
- 11:43Ryan: Like how
- 11:44Jon: Yep.
- 11:45Kearns: Well, Indie's pretty tiny.
- 11:46I can't imagine.
- 11:47He, it's,
- 11:48Jon: Indy's not a big dog.
- 11:49No.
- 11:50Kearns: like a puppy.
- 11:50The whole movie.
- 11:52Ryan: that's what I was saying, like
- 11:53Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 11:54Ryan: like he'd be like growing a little bit more.
- 11:56'cause my dog's like got a little golden retriever in her
- 11:59and she's like up to my knee.
- 12:01I'd expect like that's like the normal size.
- 12:05maybe by the calf.
- 12:06Kearns: Golden Goldens can be tall at the, at the top of, the head of Golden.
- 12:10Can be at your chest.
- 12:12Well, a little lower than your chest.
- 12:13They can get very, very big.
- 12:16There are
- 12:16Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 12:17Kearns: golden retrievers I've seen where I'm, they're statuesque,
- 12:20they're unbelievably gorgeous dogs.
- 12:22there's two different variants.
- 12:23There's like an English one I think, and then there's an
- 12:25American and one's very stocky.
- 12:28Uh, I forget which is which, like one has more of a broad head.
- 12:32Ryan: Not the American one.
- 12:34Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 12:34Ryan: one's a little more slender.
- 12:35Kearns: Is that the, the way of it?
- 12:37Okay.
- 12:38yeah, the more aqualine face and everything tend to be the taller,
- 12:41long, more lengthy ones I think.
- 12:43But I just love them.
- 12:45Our, we went to a wedding in, um, Colorado and our friend's parents'
- 12:50dog was there, I think the dog's name's Arlo, sorry for doxing.
- 12:54You Arlo.
- 12:55the dog from snout to tip of tail had to be seven feet long.
- 12:58The thing is huge and gorgeous, super well behaved like a pleasure to be around it.
- 13:05It felt like you've stumbled upon a frigging unicorn
- 13:07when you were near that dog.
- 13:09I love him, dude.
- 13:11I love that they did this movie with the dog and like kept that
- 13:14sort of majesty the whole time too.
- 13:16You just wanted to pet the dog the whole movie.
- 13:19Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 13:21Yeah.
- 13:21Yeah.
- 13:22even when, his poor mess of a Todd is falling apart.
- 13:27Kearns: get into the dark part.
- 13:27This is a horror movie.
- 13:28Uh,
- 13:30Ryan: Yeah.
- 13:31Jon: it's a horror movie.
- 13:32It's, you know, and it definitely touches on some scary stuff,
- 13:36but it's also pretty emotional.
- 13:39Kearns: with it.
- 13:40I had a hard time with it because it was so
- 13:42Jon: He,
- 13:45because about halfway through, it goes beyond being just a ghost movie
- 13:50Ryan: Yeah.
- 13:51Jon: when we discover that old Todd has an in inoperable brain tumor.
- 13:58Kearns: You know, any attitude like that, it's inoperable, but if
- 14:02you get the, you get the right guy out there, you can operate on it.
- 14:06can operate on anything really, if you think about it.
- 14:09Ryan: I mean,
- 14:10Jon: I mean,
- 14:10Ryan: need to,
- 14:11Jon: yeah,
- 14:12Kearns: you're just not gonna make
- 14:13Jon: fair.
- 14:14Ryan: I listen,
- 14:15Kearns: Turns into
- 14:16Jon: I mean,
- 14:16Kearns: real fast.
- 14:18Ryan: Steve Martin was successful and the man with two brains.
- 14:21I believe in Steve Martin,
- 14:22Kearns: It's true.
- 14:24Ryan: he can handle it.
- 14:25But it's interesting that
- 14:27Jon: Yeah.
- 14:27Ryan: when he finds out about this, the way he copes is he goes to
- 14:31his grandfather's isolated cabin.
- 14:34Like he kinda shuts everyone out.
- 14:35He shuts his sister Vera
- 14:37Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 14:38Ryan: he's like given up.
- 14:40feel
- 14:41Jon: Yeah.
- 14:41Ryan: to fight, but he's like, he's like, I need to do this battle myself.
- 14:45And
- 14:45Kearns: Yeah.
- 14:46Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 14:47Ryan: a lot because even
- 14:48Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 14:48Ryan: I think he goes into readmission.
- 14:51Kearns: Um, well, he's come out of it, so it's, in tone that he was in
- 14:54remission and that it has returned.
- 14:57And then, they found out, oh, it's not only is it returned, but it is
- 15:00advanced and metastasized, which means
- 15:02Jon: Yeah,
- 15:03Kearns: then he's,
- 15:04Jon: yeah,
- 15:05Kearns: oh.
- 15:07Jon: yeah.
- 15:08And there's a line early on that seems kind of throw away when he
- 15:12gets to the grandfather's house about how his family dies young.
- 15:17Ryan: Yeah.
- 15:19Jon: And like, like in the moment it's just like, yeah, I guess his
- 15:21grandfather died young and his grandfather is somebody we should point out.
- 15:25'cause he's sort of a cult, horror, big name kind of person.
- 15:30Kearns: Mm-hmm.
- 15:30Jon: Fessenden,
- 15:31Ryan: Okay.
- 15:32Jon: he's been in a ton of stuff.
- 15:35Ryan: Oh, I know that dude.
- 15:38Jon: Yeah, no, you absolutely know the dude.
- 15:40, He's been tons and tons of stuff, and then he sneaks into like Killers
- 15:45of the Flower Moon as like an unnamed character, but like, he's
- 15:49Kearns: That's
- 15:49Jon: lots and lots of cool stuff.
- 15:51I,
- 15:51Kearns: come on, it's Larry,
- 15:53Jon: yeah, yeah.
- 15:55Kearns: get him in.
- 15:58Jon: Yeah.
- 15:59He at, he was in a Wendigo movie.
- 16:01He's been in a bunch of stuff.
- 16:02That was really cool.
- 16:03You're next.
- 16:04Ryan: Dawn, which is
- 16:05Kearns: Oh, neat.
- 16:06Ryan: game, which is like basically creating your own horror film.
- 16:11Like
- 16:11Kearns: Until Dawn is, is um, really well loved.
- 16:15Ryan: Oh, he's in Man and Madon too, which is like a spiritual
- 16:18successor too, in that sense.
- 16:20Oh, until
- 16:21Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 16:22Ryan: I, movie is a cool concept, but the original game, the idea with
- 16:27like, there's monsters out there, but the question is, is it monster?
- 16:31Is it slasher?
- 16:33And how it blends based on
- 16:34Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 16:35Ryan: Like,
- 16:36Kearns: Yeah, it's a cool concept.
- 16:38Ryan: it's so good.
- 16:39I mean, it's Grown, has grown, but
- 16:42Jon: I like the story concepts of those games.
- 16:45I don't like the gameplay of those games because it's, there's
- 16:48not a lot of actual gameplay.
- 16:51Ryan: the Cory.
- 16:52Kearns: I gotcha.
- 16:53Ryan: would be the highest recommendation with the most gameplay out of it.
- 16:57Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 16:58Yeah.
- 16:59Like, I, I played a, a trial of that.
- 17:02It was fine.
- 17:03Like I, I was into the story, but I find that I get distracted when I play a game
- 17:08and there's not a lot of actual gameplay.
- 17:10Kearns: Fair.
- 17:11Yeah.
- 17:12Ryan: It's like, uh, the next generation of the adventure, click, and point game.
- 17:16I feel
- 17:17Kearns: Yeah,
- 17:18Ryan: more,
- 17:19Kearns: their
- 17:19Jon: Yeah.
- 17:20Kearns: in time.
- 17:21But I agree with John.
- 17:22Like I get bored of like the, the like the clock tower esque sort of games and
- 17:28things like that where you're just like,
- 17:29Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 17:30Kearns: hide there and then an animation plays for 17 seconds and you're like,
- 17:35that's why I hated, oh, I can't stand it.
- 17:37I can't stand it.
- 17:39Ryan: Kings quest.
- 17:40Kearns: Kings Quest.
- 17:41Oh no, but that's different.
- 17:44That's different.
- 17:45'cause you're actively, that's an RPG style thing too.
- 17:48I, I think Kings Quest and Heroes Quest Sierra games are very different.
- 17:52Ryan: Tell me, did you jump off the
- 17:54Kearns: Always.
- 17:54Ryan: you
- 17:55Kearns: Always.
- 17:56I play, I still play Hero's Quest on an emulator.
- 17:59Everyone I've beaten that game probably once every couple of years
- 18:02since I played it the first time.
- 18:04I always come back to the first one.
- 18:05So you want to be a hero
- 18:07Ryan: Was it typing
- 18:08Kearns: for glory?
- 18:09Yeah.
- 18:09Ryan: do you have the click one.
- 18:11Okay.
- 18:12Kearns: can use the remake one where you use the mouse but the
- 18:15original was just the keys, baby.
- 18:19Ryan: one's gonna know about the keys.
- 18:21Kearns: Yep.
- 18:21Ryan: One you had to
- 18:23Kearns: makes it
- 18:23Ryan: stuff.
- 18:23Kit.
- 18:24Kearns: hard.
- 18:25Yeah.
- 18:25You had to learn that you, like, as a little kid, you had
- 18:27to spell out candelabra, knock.
- 18:30You couldn't beat the game unless you could write, knock over a candelabra.
- 18:36What kid knows what a candelabra is on their fricking IBM Appa from 1994
- 18:42Ryan: S
- 18:45that's why I started with the secret of Monkey Island.
- 18:48Kearns: Secretive Monkey.
- 18:49Remember Kingsfield from software fans out there too?
- 18:52Kingsfield was of that era too.
- 18:54It was not much longer after those games.
- 18:56Kingsfield was the first Ark Souls.
- 18:58Demon Souls.
- 19:01It was so good too.
- 19:02Ryan: they had, you guys ever play the um, I know we're off topic and
- 19:05Kearns: See, yeah, we're gonna get back.
- 19:06We're gonna probably zero in with the game.
- 19:09Ryan: hold on, hold on.
- 19:09Wait real quick.
- 19:10The old school VFX games where it was actually an actual movie?
- 19:15Kearns: Yes.
- 19:15Like, uh, phantasmagoria.
- 19:17Jon: Oh yeah,
- 19:18Kearns: Yep.
- 19:19Ryan: Yep.
- 19:21Alright.
- 19:22Kearns: Those are the
- 19:22Jon: Yep.
- 19:23Ryan: games.
- 19:23Jon: Yeah, I remember those.
- 19:24Ryan: ready.
- 19:25Kearns: Let's be,
- 19:25Ryan: tear our
- 19:26Kearns: how bad
- 19:26Jon: You ready?
- 19:27Kearns: a person John was.
- 19:28I refused to call
- 19:29Jon: You ready?
- 19:30Kearns: I don't want him to get bricked up over there.
- 19:31Jon: Oh, they call me a bad boy.
- 19:37Ryan: I see Roarke coming
- 19:38Jon: so it is a, it's a traditional slasher stash with.
- 19:46A twist.
- 19:48Kearns: twist, I'm sure.
- 19:49Jon: Anything that you slash you delete forever.
- 19:55Ryan: Okay.
- 19:56Jon: You d you don't just delete the movie, you delete the
- 19:59director's entire filmography.
- 20:03Ryan: John Carpenter.
- 20:04Better
- 20:04Jon: So
- 20:04Ryan: be on this evil
- 20:07Jon: ha
- 20:07Ryan: You evil man.
- 20:09Jon: ha ha.
- 20:11Um, he's actually not, because the, I'll give you guys the
- 20:14theme because it's important.
- 20:16It is directorial debuts.
- 20:21Kearns: Fever was a directorial debut cool
- 20:26Ryan: that was really done well too.
- 20:27I mean, we always talk about the bathtub scene and you know.
- 20:31Kearns: Listerine scene.
- 20:32Ryan: list.
- 20:33Well, the Listerine, the bathtub, like all it's, it's so good and
- 20:37not good all at the same time.
- 20:40Jon: So should you choose to stash cabin fever, you will not only keep cabin fever,
- 20:48you will also keep every Eli Roth movie.
- 20:52Ryan: Okay,
- 20:53Jon: However, if you slash this Eli Roth's film career no longer exists.
- 21:00Kearns: his movies.
- 21:02But,
- 21:03Ryan: includes
- 21:03Jon: And he is,
- 21:05Kearns: Oh, okay.
- 21:05Nevermind.
- 21:06Jon: everything he's ever worked on is
- 21:09Ryan: Goodbye Eli.
- 21:10Kearns: I'm good with that though.
- 21:11I don't like hostile.
- 21:15Ryan: we'll see you in glorious bastards.
- 21:19Jon: So are we.
- 21:20Ah, no, he's not in glorious bastards 'cause he, his
- 21:23Hollywood career doesn't exist.
- 21:25Ryan: Well, it was supposed to go to Adam Sandler, so I'm fine with it slash it.
- 21:31Jon: We're both slashing cabin.
- 21:33Goodbye Eli Roth.
- 21:35There is no more Eli Roth movies in the world because of you guys.
- 21:39Good job.
- 21:41Kearns: we're gonna be okay.
- 21:41Ryan: Better be on here
- 21:43Kearns: I was gonna say, I can't wait to slash him.
- 21:48Jon: you think I'll put him on here?
- 21:50I didn't do anything that easy for you guys.
- 21:52Kearns: Oh.
- 21:52Jon: two, the Evil Dead.
- 21:58Remember slashed.
- 22:01There are no more Sam Raey movies,
- 22:05not just no more Evil Deads.
- 22:07There's no Spider-Man.
- 22:09There's no anything Eli uh, Sam Remy's ever done.
- 22:13It's gone.
- 22:16Poof.
- 22:17Kearns: I am gonna have to stash evil Dead.
- 22:19Even without worrying about Spider-Man,
- 22:22Ryan: I'm actually stashing it because of like Spider-Man.
- 22:26'cause I, I love the first two.
- 22:27I love the first two Spider-Man movies and Evil Dead.
- 22:30But yeah, I gotta stash
- 22:32Kearns: you mean the Tobys
- 22:34Jon: I am,
- 22:34Ryan: Tobys not the third one.
- 22:36Third,
- 22:36Kearns: third one was hot garbage
- 22:38Ryan: oh God,
- 22:39Kearns: and they,
- 22:39Ryan: when they revealed the scene where they cut out the Sandman being
- 22:43a castle for his daughter, which could have built the character more and the
- 22:47studio was like, no, we don't need this.
- 22:49Kearns: yeah, they screwed up big time.
- 22:52Ryan: The second one's the best.
- 22:53Jon: so
- 22:54Ryan: saying,
- 22:56Jon: this is one of the, the movies I got Alison to slash So
- 23:01you guys might be doing better.
- 23:02Well, this came up dead last for her.
- 23:05Kearns: I forgot the order is okay.
- 23:07Ryan: Random.
- 23:08Kearns: Hey, we got lucky so far with
- 23:10Jon: Yep.
- 23:11Kearns: and this second.
- 23:12Ryan: But it could still
- 23:13Jon: All right.
- 23:15Kearns: Oh,
- 23:16Jon: three.
- 23:18Kearns: oh,
- 23:20Jon: Be careful here guys.
- 23:22Be careful.
- 23:23You could take George Romero completely outta the world, which would mean
- 23:27not only are there no George Romero movies, there's probably no podcast
- 23:33Kearns: That's true.
- 23:34Jon: 'cause without Romero, I don't get into horror the way I got into horror.
- 23:38Kearns: dead air and then there's no one more episodes ever again.
- 23:41Ryan: We wake up tomorrow morning.
- 23:42Hey, are we doing X Friday?
- 23:45No.
- 23:46What are you talking about?
- 23:47What?
- 23:48Jon: What is xenomania
- 23:50Ryan: We actually do a comedy podcast.
- 23:52Jon: are, are we going to talk about the notebook?
- 23:56Kearns: We should do an episode on that for April Fool's Day.
- 24:02Jon: Never been kissed this week.
- 24:04Kearns: ha.
- 24:05I'm gonna have to stash this one too.
- 24:07Ryan: Yeah, but you might have Wes Craven, man,
- 24:11Kearns: I could lose less craven.
- 24:13Yeah.
- 24:14It's gonna hurt you a lot more.
- 24:14It's gonna hurt me, buddy.
- 24:17Jon: We're gonna, that debate is gonna go on for the rest of eternity.
- 24:22Ryan: it because I love Day of the Dead.
- 24:24Love Night of the
- 24:25Kearns: I,
- 24:25Ryan: Dead,
- 24:26Kearns: I just, uh, we're in fifth grade.
- 24:29There's five of us laughing until we piss ourselves because they're
- 24:31beating up, which clearly an inflatable with a fire poker and
- 24:37we're just, I don't even remember.
- 24:38We're like eating Pop-Tarts and we're on a hardwood floor and life
- 24:42Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 24:42Kearns: I can never, I just stash this.
- 24:45Yeah.
- 24:47Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 24:48This is the other movie.
- 24:49I got Alison to slash
- 24:53this is her favorite movie of all time.
- 24:56Kearns: done her dirty.
- 24:57Ryan: we're doing.
- 24:58Good.
- 25:00Jon: Um, I don't know.
- 25:01We'll see, because remember.
- 25:04There's three movies after this that she stashed.
- 25:07Kearns: also though, how many do we, we get to keep four.
- 25:11Ryan: yeah.
- 25:12Kearns: Oh,
- 25:12Jon: No.
- 25:12Three.
- 25:13Ryan: on, hold
- 25:13Jon: No.
- 25:13Three.
- 25:14It's three and it's three and five.
- 25:16It's always three and five Gentlemen.
- 25:18Kearns: I heard it was four too.
- 25:19There is
- 25:19Ryan: Yeah,
- 25:20Jon: It's always three and five.
- 25:22Always.
- 25:23You.
- 25:24You can beg for four and four.
- 25:25It's not gonna help you anyway,
- 25:27Kearns: geez.
- 25:27That's even worse.
- 25:29right.
- 25:30Jon: because I know, I know what's coming.
- 25:32I don't know what order it's coming in, but I know the What's on this list
- 25:36and before we go on, I started reading a book that's about neither the Living
- 25:40Dead that's particularly fantastic.
- 25:43It's called Partially Devoured.
- 25:45Kearns: a name.
- 25:45Jon: It's
- 25:46Ryan: I like
- 25:46Jon: a Daniel Krause book.
- 25:48and it's Daniel Krause's.
- 25:50It's sort of like a frame by frame breakdown slash memoir
- 25:55of Night of Living Dead.
- 25:57And he goes into things that like I've noticed and never quite put a finger
- 26:01on or stuff I didn't even notice.
- 26:04It's really fascinating.
- 26:05I'm only like, I'm like 60 pages into the book and 12 minutes into the
- 26:09movie, so it's a really cool read.
- 26:13All right, next.
- 26:17David Cronenberg shivers.
- 26:20Ryan: no
- 26:21Kearns: Yeah.
- 26:21Ryan: Jerome,
- 26:22Kearns: It was like
- 26:22Ryan: no fly,
- 26:24Kearns: losing
- 26:25Jon: Nope.
- 26:25Kearns: but
- 26:26Ryan: but, but you
- 26:27Kearns: presenting it with shivers makes it easier.
- 26:29Ryan: Price
- 26:30Kearns: Okay.
- 26:31That that makes me feel a little better.
- 26:33Ryan: I'll
- 26:33Kearns: I'm definitely slashing it.
- 26:34Yeah, definitely slashing it.
- 26:37Ryan: still get a classic fly.
- 26:39You just don't get the gold bloom fly.
- 26:42Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 26:44Kearns: If you
- 26:44Jon: All right.
- 26:45Kearns: in the
- 26:45Jon: Four to go, guys.
- 26:46Kearns: four more to go and I gotta cut three.
- 26:50Jon: Yep.
- 26:51You guys are gonna be so mad pretty soon.
- 26:54Kearns: Do do, do
- 26:59Jon: No.
- 26:59Texas chainsaw massacres?
- 27:02No.
- 27:02Toby Hooper, which means no Poltergeist.
- 27:05Ryan: you just
- 27:05Kearns: The creepy little lady.
- 27:07Ryan: You just saved some money.
- 27:08I'm slashing it.
- 27:09You just got your money back.
- 27:12Kearns: Creepy little lady.
- 27:14I love the creepy little lady telling the family about their dangerous situation.
- 27:21I'm gonna have to slash it too 'cause I know there's something else coming
- 27:24up that I'm not gonna want to slash
- 27:26Ryan: Would he be evil enough to put Don Cascarelli on here?
- 27:31Kearns: he might be.
- 27:32Actually, we'll see when he pops
- 27:35Jon: We'll see.
- 27:38There's plenty evil coming Next Bad Taste, which is Peter Jackson's first movie.
- 27:46Kearns: that is evil.
- 27:47Jon: Bye Lord of the Rings.
- 27:50Kearns: You wanted to hit the fantasy guy with this one.
- 27:54Jon: It's all gone.
- 27:56Everything Peter Jackson ever did is gone.
- 28:00Ryan: what the last one's gonna be
- 28:01Kearns: the Hobbit?
- 28:01I could.
- 28:02I live with with this because the Hobbit's gone.
- 28:04'cause I hated the Hobbit.
- 28:05Jon: remember I didn't order this, so I don't even know what the last one is.
- 28:09Ryan: version of The Ho and Lore.
- 28:11The Rinks, which is I still love.
- 28:14Kearns: There's just the Hobbit, isn't there?
- 28:15There's an
- 28:15Jon: Yeah, I mean,
- 28:16Kearns: the Rings.
- 28:17Ryan: Yeah, it was the sequel, the same animators,
- 28:19Kearns: Oh, neat.
- 28:21Ryan: and they did return the kink too.
- 28:22They skipped the two towers
- 28:25Jon: no Frighteners, no dead alive, no Kong,
- 28:30Ryan: Frighteners.
- 28:32Jon: probably probably no New Zealand.
- 28:35New Zealand's probably gone.
- 28:39Ryan: He
- 28:39Jon: Yeah.
- 28:40Ryan: it.
- 28:40He filmed everything.
- 28:41Jon: I mean there are years he was probably half of their GDP.
- 28:45Right?
- 28:46Ryan: Hmm.
- 28:48But what do you have for last though?
- 28:51Kearns: I can't, I can't
- 28:52Jon: I don't know.
- 28:53Kearns: I can't, I have to, I have to slash this.
- 28:57I can't have, I
- 28:58Jon: Oof.
- 28:58Kearns: dead and night of living dead in bad taste.
- 29:03Ryan: it's bad taste.
- 29:03Lord, the rings
- 29:05Jon: But you have, you have Sam Raey, you have Sam Raey,
- 29:09George Romero and Peter Jackson.
- 29:11Kearns: I think I'm gonna have to hope that somebody in 2040 makes a
- 29:15better version of Lord of the Rings,
- 29:19which they won't, by the way.
- 29:20Jon: Alright.
- 29:21Kearns: we won't have the actors.
- 29:22Jon: Nope, nope.
- 29:26It'll be ai.
- 29:28You'll get an ai.
- 29:28Lord of the Rings.
- 29:30Kearns: it.
- 29:30Ryan: garbage
- 29:30Kearns: I would rather just read it, bruh.
- 29:33Ryan: After you're saying that I'm slashing it.
- 29:36Kearns: Ah, yeah.
- 29:37I can't do it.
- 29:38Jon: let's,
- 29:38Kearns: keep it.
- 29:39Ryan: I'll take
- 29:39Jon: let's, let's.
- 29:40Ryan: over Frighteners and I love Frighteners.
- 29:43Jon: Oh,
- 29:45Ryan: future though?
- 29:46Jon: oh.
- 29:47Frighteners is so much better.
- 29:50Back to the future is just nostalgia.
- 29:53Frighteners is awesome.
- 29:54Ryan: I'm looking at the benefit here.
- 29:55In this situation, you lose Frighteners, but you
- 29:58Jon: Yeah.
- 30:00Well, let's see.
- 30:01Ryan: the
- 30:03Kearns: Oh, basket case.
- 30:08Jon: Do you keep the entire Frank Henin Lauder collection
- 30:13Kearns: does that entail?
- 30:14Jon: ure?
- 30:15Kearns: Tell the viewers what the, the Frank Hen and Lauder
- 30:18Film Collection entails.
- 30:21Jon: I mean, probably most disappointingly you would lose Frank and Hooker
- 30:25Ryan: Want a date?
- 30:28Jon: going out on a date.
- 30:31Ryan: Frank and Hucker,
- 30:32Jon: Super crack.
- 30:33Ryan: going away slashing.
- 30:36Kearns: man, I kind of, I would
- 30:37Jon: Ooh,
- 30:37Kearns: to throw a curve ball and stash this sucker.
- 30:39I do love basket case, man.
- 30:42It's just so perfect.
- 30:45Jon: I know what's last.
- 30:46And uh, I think you're gonna be disappointed in choices when
- 30:49you see what you're keeping.
- 30:52Kearns: Me.
- 30:54Jon: Yeah.
- 30:55Kearns: I,
- 30:56Jon: I think there's gonna be a level of disappointment here for you.
- 30:59Kearns: this the second to last one,
- 31:02Jon: This is the Pen Ultimate movie.
- 31:05Kearns: might, I was leaning on stashing it anyway, but now, now I
- 31:08feel bad about losing Peter Jackson.
- 31:11All right.
- 31:15Jon: That's the beauty of this.
- 31:16I don't know what, I didn't know what order, and now it.
- 31:20Kearns: with, I'm gonna just see what Evil John has for me.
- 31:22The last one I'll slash basket case.
- 31:24There's just not enough of a filmography back.
- 31:27You know, there's,
- 31:29Jon: Oh,
- 31:30Ryan: last?
- 31:32Jon: Ryan is gonna be happy.
- 31:34Kern's less so.
- 31:37Of course it is.
- 31:38Kearns: I don't mind that.
- 31:38Ryan: West Craven?
- 31:39Kearns: Last house on the left.
- 31:40Ryan: I'm sold.
- 31:41Do we get the screen movies?
- 31:43We get Nightmare on Elm Street.
- 31:45Kearns: I do love.
- 31:47Jon: You guys got rid of, hold on, hold on, hold on.
- 31:50You guys got rid of Peter fricking Jackson
- 31:53Ryan: but
- 31:54Kearns: And,
- 31:54Jon: for Wes
- 31:56Ryan: whoa,
- 31:56Jon: Craven.
- 31:57Kearns: off.
- 31:58Ryan: wave a flag for waste.
- 31:58Jon: You got rid of,
- 32:00Kearns: I'm not thrilled about
- 32:01Jon: you can wave.
- 32:02Any flag you want for Wes Craven.
- 32:05You got rid of Peter Jackson to keep him.
- 32:10You got rid of three movies.
- 32:13That should have, should have been best picture for West Craven.
- 32:18Kearns: about it is, is that we're, we're like stuck on, you know,
- 32:23we're stuck on a few of them, let's see, what else did we lose?
- 32:27District nine, the frighteners, like we said before,
- 32:31Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 32:33Anything he did gone away
- 32:36Kearns: Jackson did Mortal Engines.
- 32:37He's got some stinkers here.
- 32:39He's got some stinkers,
- 32:41Jon: of,
- 32:42Kearns: some big time stinkers.
- 32:43Let's,
- 32:45Jon: I mean, everybody does, but
- 32:47Kearns: Ian one, he's riding that of the Rings money.
- 32:50He,
- 32:51Ryan: I mean if, do you count four rooms as a stinker for Tarantino, even though he
- 32:57Kearns: no,
- 32:57Ryan: segment?
- 32:58Kearns: no,
- 33:00Jon: Yes,
- 33:00Kearns: think it's
- 33:01Jon: I do.
- 33:01Kearns: Tarantino's stinker.
- 33:03Jon: I do.
- 33:04Ryan: it's just a segment though.
- 33:05It's not a full film.
- 33:06Jon: I mean, it's not his exclusively, but I mean, he has to bear some of that.
- 33:12Ryan: Alright.
- 33:13Because that's
- 33:13Kearns: Secrets of the Force Awakening.
- 33:16In 2016, they, he did a Star Wars movie.
- 33:18Jon: He probably produced.
- 33:20Kearns: thing, like Without Lord of the Rings, without Tolkien.
- 33:23Rather.
- 33:24Peter Jackson's career is still burgeoning.
- 33:28You're still like at like He's good.
- 33:31I like this.
- 33:32I like
- 33:32Jon: probably one of the Better War documentaries and they shall not grow old.
- 33:38Kearns: I saw that.
- 33:39He's got a few of
- 33:40Jon: Yeah.
- 33:43Mm-hmm.
- 33:45Some, some Beatles stuff that he's brought back, which I don't care about,
- 33:49but I know there are people who do
- 33:51Kearns: Okay.
- 33:53Jon: the lovely bones.
- 33:54Like, look at what you guys got rid of
- 33:57Kearns: movie.
- 33:58It was an okay book concept.
- 33:59Jon: O.
- 34:00Kearns: Okay.
- 34:00Book concept.
- 34:01I did enjoy that, but the movie couldn't even be saved by
- 34:04Stanley Tucci as the Bad Guy.
- 34:07Ryan: you're trying to make us feel guilty for.
- 34:10Of Peter Jackson.
- 34:11Kearns: He's trying to, trying to rub
- 34:13Jon: You should.
- 34:13Kearns: wounds, but
- 34:14Jon: You should.
- 34:14Kearns: that
- 34:15Jon: You should feel, you should, you should feel bad for losing Peter Jackson.
- 34:20Kearns: Peter
- 34:20Jon: You should.
- 34:21Kearns: it
- 34:22Jon: You should.
- 34:22Kearns: thought about it and I thought you had something better coming down the
- 34:26pipe, but I should have thought about it.
- 34:30Jon: No way to figure it out.
- 34:32'cause it was completely random.
- 34:33I think I might do them all randomly because I like not knowing
- 34:36what's, what's coming next too.
- 34:38Ryan: it's fun.
- 34:39Kearns: Keeps it spicy.
- 34:40Ryan: fun.
- 34:41Kearns: Keeps it spicy.
- 34:43All right.
- 34:43Kids
- 34:44Ryan: That
- 34:44Kearns: we're,
- 34:44Ryan: game.
- 34:44Kearns: that was a good
- 34:45Jon: Alright.
- 34:46Kearns: backs to good boy.
- 34:47Jon: Back to good boy.
- 34:48Kearns: the fact that, the dog's owner is sick with the big
- 34:54Jon: Yeah.
- 34:56he is terminal.
- 34:57Kearns: to, finish things out.
- 35:00Um,
- 35:02Jon: Yeah.
- 35:02Kearns: dog.
- 35:05Is aware of this.
- 35:08we, are we all on the same page that the dog is, is noticing these things?
- 35:17Jon: Yeah.
- 35:17I think the dog's picking up on a, a distinct decline in,
- 35:21Ryan: Yeah.
- 35:22Jon: in his owner in Todd.
- 35:25Kearns: the tea dog.
- 35:26Ryan: it senses, I mean, all dogs sense.
- 35:28I mean, all animals can sense when they're like owners, like going through
- 35:32something, uh, whether it's like
- 35:35Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 35:35Ryan: or emotions, it's like they have that sense
- 35:39Kearns: Yeah.
- 35:39Ryan: and like you see
- 35:41Jon: He,
- 35:41Ryan: and I mean,
- 35:42Jon: yeah.
- 35:42Ryan: dick in a couple spots, I'm sorry to
- 35:44Kearns: Well, he's, yeah.
- 35:47Jon: Well,
- 35:47Ryan: I'm
- 35:47Jon: he is, but like he is.
- 35:51But at that point, how much of that is Todd and how much that is?
- 35:57Damaged brain from a tumor,
- 35:59Kearns: That's part of it.
- 36:00And also the stress of knowing.
- 36:01Jon: you know?
- 36:02Ryan: Okay.
- 36:03Kearns: end is ni.
- 36:04Jon: Yeah,
- 36:04Kearns: Um, and then he also
- 36:06Jon: yeah,
- 36:06Kearns: to Indy
- 36:07Ryan: He
- 36:08Kearns: on more than one
- 36:09Jon: yeah,
- 36:10Ryan: it's just those moments where you're just like, ah,
- 36:14Jon: yeah.
- 36:14They, there's a, when he chains them up outside, like it's, oh, come on, Todd.
- 36:19Don't do that.
- 36:20Kearns: hate him for a bit, but there's also the, there parallels there because
- 36:23what my theory is, and I'm sure you guys are on the same page 'cause it's
- 36:27pretty glaring, Todd is the monster,
- 36:30Ryan: yes.
- 36:31Kearns: the monster that Indy is seeing pop up the ghost or monster,
- 36:35whatever you wanna call it, the mud monster guy, is the manifestation
- 36:39of Todd's disease taking him over.
- 36:42And
- 36:42Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 36:43Kearns: literally a scene where that does happen Todd physically,
- 36:47which kind of cinch the deal.
- 36:48Like they don't, I kind of appreciate that they don't leave it super open-ended.
- 36:52It kind of, they're
- 36:53Jon: Yeah.
- 36:54Kearns: this is
- 36:54Jon: Yeah, it's, it's, it's pretty clear.
- 36:58It's, also very grim beery
- 37:00Kearns: which is kind of neat.
- 37:01Jon: that this dark shadow is stalking Todd, the whole movie.
- 37:06Ryan: Mm-hmm.
- 37:07Kearns: it was kind of, and it's nice that it's artful in that
- 37:09way, so you can have the idea of death as an entity, stalking its
- 37:15Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 37:15Kearns: thing.
- 37:16And then it, sort of just wraps up nicely and that not really, we
- 37:19just did that for the funsies, but this is what's really going on.
- 37:23Jon: Yeah.
- 37:24Yeah.
- 37:24You, you get to a real, real gut punch of an end.
- 37:29Kearns: by the way.
- 37:31Jon: Yeah.
- 37:32I mean, you know, it's coming.
- 37:34Like there's no way you can expect that Todd's surviving at the end of this movie.
- 37:38Kearns: We're you're prepared for that.
- 37:40Jon: They told you, they told you half an hour in, he's not going to.
- 37:44Kearns: a film where that's happening and they realize, well, he probably
- 37:47wrote it this way beforehand, but you realize that the viewer is
- 37:50going to be aware of this coming up.
- 37:53You can't, just leave the ending of the movie to be anything Floopy.
- 37:57After that, you have to really nail
- 37:59Jon: No.
- 38:00No.
- 38:01Kearns: did that.
- 38:02Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 38:02Kearns: why I appreciated this
- 38:03Jon: He really did.
- 38:06Mm-hmm.
- 38:07Mm-hmm.
- 38:08And, in reading the reviews, trying to cull a few good ones to, share
- 38:13a lot of the negativity is in that like, oh, why does it end that way?
- 38:19I didn't feel anything.
- 38:20I what?
- 38:21It wasn't, it was stupid.
- 38:23Like it's,
- 38:23Kearns: like an hour.
- 38:24Ryan: Yeah.
- 38:25Jon: and yeah, and I mean, I think if you walk away from good boy kind without
- 38:32feeling that you've either never loved a dog or never had a dog love you.
- 38:37'cause like, like if you've had that, the love of a dog.
- 38:42It's a gut punch in a head.
- 38:43Like, you know, like that's one of the things that, you know, worries
- 38:48me about having cats is where, who's gonna take care of these
- 38:52guys if something happens to me?
- 38:55Kearns: Yeah,
- 38:56Jon: I, I, and I mean, my, my case is maybe a little more extraordinary
- 39:00'cause there's more than one cat for somebody to take care of.
- 39:05Kearns: because
- 39:08Ryan: Names
- 39:09Jon: I mean, at, at the, at the moment, at the moment, they, they all have
- 39:13one place to go, so they'll all go together, which is like, but that's
- 39:19the kind of thing like, like if you have, if you live with animals, if you
- 39:24love animals, you know what that is,
- 39:26Kearns: where, where am I going, dad?
- 39:29Where are you sending me?
- 39:33Jon: you wanna come here.
- 39:34Ryan: You wanna
- 39:34Kearns: he, well, he is kind of thinking about it.
- 39:36Um, so at the tail end of the movie, good boy.
- 39:40When Todd dies, or as he's dying, I forget which I think a, after he is dead, maybe.
- 39:46Well, Indy Indy, um, is gifted entrance into the basement, into the storm
- 39:52cellar, and we have to talk about what you guys think about how those
- 39:56doors open because that's not, that's stunned by something supernatural.
- 40:00Todd didn't do it and Indy didn't do it.
- 40:04Ryan: I believe, the grandfather's dog,
- 40:06Kearns: Okay.
- 40:07Ryan: tried to defend, uh, the grandfather and it, that was heart wrenching.
- 40:12When you see the, the bones, like it was just trapped there.
- 40:15No one was able to rescue it and it died.
- 40:18Like, and that's the thing, like you're talking about owning a
- 40:20dog or having a dog, it's like.
- 40:23They're loyal and that dog stayed there and was loyal and
- 40:28Kearns: Seymour from Futurama, bro.
- 40:30Ryan: Oh God.
- 40:31Kearns: Seymour from Futurama.
- 40:33I still remember that crap.
- 40:35Ryan: it's a great episode too.
- 40:36It's just like, oh, he never, he didn't, he didn't for, he didn't remember me.
- 40:40He forgot about me.
- 40:41And then you see the montage
- 40:43Kearns: Yeah, he is just there waiting.
- 40:47Oh, that one was
- 40:48Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 40:49Kearns: Brutal.
- 40:50Jon: Yeah.
- 40:51I mean, it always is though.
- 40:53Like if you, if you love an animal, those endings are always like that.
- 40:59Kearns: Yeah.
- 41:00Jon: I mean, sixth grade, I finished reading Old Yeller in class.
- 41:06Ryan: Yeah.
- 41:07Kearns: Oh
- 41:09Jon: I heard about that for a long time.
- 41:12Kearns: Hey man,
- 41:13Ryan: let's just go behind the shed.
- 41:16Kearns: where the Red Fern Grows was another one that kind of kicks you.
- 41:19That
- 41:19Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 41:20Kearns: like the kids, like, because of those dogs.
- 41:22The kid gets to go to college.
- 41:25He gets to go to school in the big
- 41:27Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 41:28Kearns: Uh,
- 41:31Jon: And I think, I think it's important to note too, that, you
- 41:34know, for people who are sensitive to that kind of stuff, India is never
- 41:39in any real danger in this movie.
- 41:41Kearns: get tense and you get worried about him.
- 41:43Ryan: Yeah,
- 41:44Jon: Yeah.
- 41:45Kearns: things towards Indy, but never, never physically harms him.
- 41:50It's
- 41:50Jon: No.
- 41:51Kearns: that.
- 41:51Yeah.
- 41:51Good, good disclaimer.
- 41:52John,
- 41:53Ryan: Yeah.
- 41:53Kearns: uh, PSA, I should say.
- 41:55Ryan: It's a, it's a safe movie.
- 41:57I had to
- 41:57Kearns: Yeah,
- 41:58Ryan: that it was a safe movie before we watched it, that's like the
- 42:02question, like, is the dog gonna die?
- 42:04I mean, if the dog did, I mean, it's, it's another, yeah.
- 42:10Kearns: the threat of that though, it does affect how scary the movie is.
- 42:16So it's, you can't like know the dog's not gonna get hurt.
- 42:20Jon: Well, yeah, I mean, and I did not get that because I watched it with
- 42:26Allison and anytime there's a dog in one of these movies, we have to know if
- 42:30the dog is okay or she can't watch it.
- 42:32So there's a website, there's, does the Dog Die
- 42:35Kearns: Forgot about that.
- 42:36Jon: that is now expanded into like every trigger warning at this point
- 42:41Kearns: There's different
- 42:42Jon: is, is there essay in this movie?
- 42:44Is there this in the, like any, anything that could trigger something.
- 42:48Kearns: trigger warnings,
- 42:50Jon: Yeah.
- 42:51Is there a, there isn't one for, is there a scars guard though?
- 42:56I think we, I think we need to add that for them.
- 42:59Kearns: you if you put that tab on that site.
- 43:01That's why
- 43:02Ryan: scar.
- 43:02Scar
- 43:03Kearns: my boys, my boys must d Well, thanks Kellen.
- 43:09So
- 43:09Ryan: you did.
- 43:11Jon: Did, did, did you just make a Norwegian guy an Italian mobster?
- 43:15Kearns: Kellen sounds to me.
- 43:16Just like that's his default.
- 43:18Ryan: Goodwill hunting, that's all.
- 43:19I'm gonna say.
- 43:20Kearns: Yeah,
- 43:21Jon: Wait, is he, is he Norwegian or is he Swedish now?
- 43:24I'm not sure.
- 43:24Scandinavian.
- 43:27Kearns: That's what I always say when it's one of the Baltics or something.
- 43:30He is some kind of Viking.
- 43:32A lot of Europe was real mad at him for a while.
- 43:36That's what he is.
- 43:38And now I'm just mad at his
- 43:39Jon: Yeah.
- 43:40Kearns: flag.
- 43:42Jon: Yeah.
- 43:44So let me ask you guys a question.
- 43:46If you cast your dog in a movie, it's not nepotism 'cause that's a, a family member.
- 43:51Is it dog tism
- 43:53Kearns: It should be dog mutism.
- 43:55Ryan: No be, no,
- 43:56Jon: mutism?
- 43:57Ryan: you gotta work with, you know, an animal that you trust, you know,
- 44:03Jon: You do You do.
- 44:06And honestly, I think, it works for me.
- 44:09It works better that in India is not a trained stage dog.
- 44:13Kearns: Yeah,
- 44:13Ryan: natural.
- 44:16Kearns: I agree.
- 44:18Jon: He, works better that way.
- 44:20And I guess there were scenes, uh, maybe that's part of the reason they
- 44:23chose to blur faces, not just for dog vision, but also there were scenes
- 44:29where, Leonberg had to stand in for the guy that played Todd because he
- 44:34couldn't get the reactions from Indy.
- 44:37Kearns: Ah,
- 44:38Ryan: Hmm,
- 44:38Kearns: okay.
- 44:39Interesting.
- 44:40Ryan: makes sense.
- 44:41I mean, how can he, like, how can
- 44:43Kearns: it's his dog.
- 44:44I.
- 44:45Ryan: That's what I was gonna say.
- 44:45You can't get like a
- 44:46Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 44:47Ryan: like do it unless it's like a personal friend maybe.
- 44:50But even then, that's like a little tricky.
- 44:52I, figured he started the role as well as directed.
- 44:55that's a nice little tidbit there.
- 44:57Jon: Yeah.
- 44:58Kearns: are
- 44:58Jon: Yeah.
- 44:59Kearns: imagine that be difficult 'cause you are the owner and you
- 45:03want the dog to react a certain way, but the dog feels safe near you.
- 45:06So the dog's not
- 45:07Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 45:08Kearns: it's scared of what's in the woods.
- 45:09I mean there seems they,
- 45:10Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 45:11Kearns: indie, getting shook worried and stuff like that.
- 45:15And how do you conjure
- 45:17Jon: Yeah.
- 45:18Kearns: to get the wine from the dog without being cruel to the dog?
- 45:21Like
- 45:21Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 45:22Kearns: work man.
- 45:23Jon: I read a lot of the wines and stuff were put in post-production.
- 45:28Kearns: That is smart.
- 45:30Jon: Yeah.
- 45:31Because, I mean, I think it's hard to get to ethically get any
- 45:36dog to make some of those noises.
- 45:39Kearns: Truth.
- 45:40That's a good point.
- 45:44Jon: All right.
- 45:44So do you guys want to hear what some other people thought of?
- 45:47Good boy.
- 45:48Kearns: the end real quick.
- 45:49'cause we gotta know, I gotta hear what you think about
- 45:51Jon: Yeah.
- 45:54Yeah.
- 45:54All right.
- 45:55Five stars.
- 45:56What a brilliant concept.
- 45:59Indy is such a good actor.
- 46:01They did a fantastic job having him reflect the emotions needed.
- 46:05We need more unique movies like this.
- 46:08Here's to Hoping he wins an award.
- 46:11Kearns: people out there that are hoping Indie is nominated, at the
- 46:14very least for awards for this movie,
- 46:17Jon: The The Dog Academy Awards.
- 46:19Kearns: him up.
- 46:20There was that other famous dog or dog that was kept getting put up next to
- 46:23people awards, um, for horror awards.
- 46:28It wasn't near, but
- 46:31sorry, cat's chasing his tail right next to me.
- 46:32It's definitely got my attention.
- 46:35Um, so it's, I just find that interesting that that happened For starters.
- 46:41Jon: The Pup Skis.
- 46:42Kearns: called the pop skirts.
- 46:45Jon: No, I just made that up.
- 46:47Ryan: Give little tuxedos.
- 46:49Jon: I think we should do that.
- 46:51Zeno xAd presents the pup skis.
- 46:55Kearns: Okay.
- 46:56Ryan: honorary mention the huskies from the thing.
- 46:59Kearns: Huskies I
- 47:03Jon: There are a lot of dogs in movies.
- 47:05We may revisit that topic in a little while.
- 47:07one star boring and not scary at all.
- 47:14Very repetitive scenes of just a dog looking and stuff.
- 47:18Terrible acting waste of time.
- 47:23Kearns: terrible
- 47:24Jon: one.
- 47:24This movie is an hour and 13 minutes.
- 47:27Ryan: didn't waste it.
- 47:28Jon: You've wasted.
- 47:29This guy has wasted an hour and 13 minutes staring out the window.
- 47:33This guy has probably spent an hour and 13 minutes trying to
- 47:36figure out how to flush a toilet.
- 47:38Ryan: I hope not.
- 47:39Kearns: I was gonna say he's bold of you to assume
- 47:43Ryan: Listen.
- 47:44Kearns: this guy sounds like the type that keeps it around.
- 47:46Ryan: he's the one who puts that Saran Wrap plunger
- 47:49Kearns: There you go.
- 47:50Ryan: around Instagram and they press through.
- 47:52That's that
- 47:52Jon: Oh yeah, yeah, that's, yeah, that's this guy.
- 47:57Kearns: a
- 47:57Jon: Or maybe it's this guy.
- 47:59Half a star garbage.
- 48:03The story goes nowhere.
- 48:05And now that I think about it, it's started from nowhere.
- 48:09Also, there was zero plot in this movie,
- 48:12Kearns: start from nowhere
- 48:15Jon: rotten Tomatoes to be ashamed of yourself.
- 48:18Yes.
- 48:18That last sentence, rotten Tomatoes, to be ashamed of yourself.
- 48:23Ryan: be ashamed for writing that.
- 48:24I, I mean, I. It's their story.
- 48:28Like what would they say to the older films that were at least an hour and 12
- 48:34minutes, like Frankenstein or Dracula, like the black and Whites, Dr. Jekyll,
- 48:39Mr. Hyde, like, and they had story.
- 48:41It's the same thing in the modern age
- 48:45Kearns: I dunno.
- 48:46Jon: I mean, they're, they, that's just somebody really didn't relate to the dogs.
- 48:51I think like if you don't relate to indie, you're, it's gonna be tough.
- 48:57Ryan: I'm just.
- 49:00Kearns: Good
- 49:01Jon: I mean, I mean, this, this sound, this sounds like somebody
- 49:04who's interested in horror doesn't go much beyond the Warrens,
- 49:07Kearns: Uh,
- 49:08Jon: and that's, that's what it is.
- 49:13Kearns: Damn you Blum
- 49:14Jon: wasn't the conjuring, so I didn't like it.
- 49:16Mm-hmm.
- 49:19Kearns: All right.
- 49:20Jon: All right.
- 49:24Kearns: It's all you buddy.
- 49:26Jon: Go ahead.
- 49:27Kearns: I was gonna,
- 49:27Jon: No, you wanted to, you wanted to, you wanted to double back to the ending, so.
- 49:31Kearns: of the movie, Todd's Dead,
- 49:33Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 49:34Kearns: get the big reveal.
- 49:35Jon: Todd's dead.
- 49:36Kearns: big reveal in the cellar about what happened to Todd's grandfather
- 49:39and I know Bingo or whatever his grandfather's dog's name was.
- 49:44I dunno what the dog is.
- 49:46Jon: Oh.
- 49:46I had, I think I have it somewhere in my notes, but I won't find it.
- 49:49Kearns: And then, and then we get, we get something of a rescue for indie.
- 49:57Okay.
- 49:57So
- 49:57Jon: Yes.
- 49:59Todd's sister Vera.
- 50:02Kearns: so what's, what's
- 50:03Jon: Yes.
- 50:05Kearns: of the ending of the movie?
- 50:07What made it so good for you?
- 50:09Jon: I think it's the loyalty, I think it's the love the dog has for
- 50:14Todd that he doesn't try, he doesn't try to get out of the basement.
- 50:18He sits and waits by those doors guarding Todd.
- 50:23Kearns: And
- 50:24Jon: That that's, that's what I get and that and that ultimately Indy will
- 50:29continue to see Todd, like you can take this sort of sadness from that,
- 50:34that you know, it's, he's lost his person or whatever, but just the way
- 50:40Indy's looking out the window as he drives off with Vera sort of makes me
- 50:45believe that he can still see Todd.
- 50:46Kearns: of thing going on there,
- 50:49Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 50:49Kearns: would,
- 50:49Ryan: with that.
- 50:50Kearns: okay.
- 50:51Jon: what I think.
- 50:51Kearns: was, it was an impactful ending for John for that reason.
- 50:54Do you have anything to spin on it?
- 50:56Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 50:57Kearns: Ryan.
- 50:58Ryan: I, I agree with Allah, what John says.
- 51:01especially like after the end credits rolls, there's another very
- 51:04scenes of him sticking his head out and he goes through the woods
- 51:08and you can hear Todd's whistle and
- 51:11Kearns: Yeah.
- 51:12Ryan: leads back to Vera.
- 51:14But it's like.
- 51:16It's a starting of a new bond.
- 51:18he lost his person, but he still has another person in Vera.
- 51:22And Vera was loyal to Todd as much as he pushed her away, just like he was
- 51:29trying to push Indy away, finally had the courage to go through with it and find him
- 51:35just as Indy was waiting to protect him.
- 51:38Kearns: Yeah.
- 51:38She was worried about Todd, the whole movie.
- 51:41Ryan: it's, it's a, it's a
- 51:42Jon: Yeah.
- 51:43Ryan: it's nice how they get together and it's like, you
- 51:45know, the dog's gonna be okay.
- 51:47You know, Indy's gonna be okay, you know, everything's fine.
- 51:50And it's, it's heartwarming for like, a horror film.
- 51:53Kearns: Mm-hmm.
- 51:54Ryan: you, sometimes
- 51:55Jon: Oh, very.
- 51:56Ryan: sometimes you want like gore and blood, but this is
- 52:00like the perfect ending for it.
- 52:02Kearns: I agree.
- 52:03This is one of
- 52:03Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 52:04Kearns: where suspense and filmmaking do a good job of making
- 52:08it scary and spooky and you don't need gore and blood and all that.
- 52:13for this particular film, just like at the end when Indy is, is next to
- 52:18the dog that stayed and that dog let
- 52:22Jon: Yes.
- 52:22Kearns: basement.
- 52:22Now why the dog let him into the basement
- 52:24Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 52:25Kearns: up in the air too, that did that dog want Indy to die
- 52:28with his owner too or something?
- 52:30Or did he wanna save him?
- 52:32That's
- 52:32Ryan: safe.
- 52:33Kearns: you think save.
- 52:34I think so too.
- 52:35I think that everything was pointing to Indy to live.
- 52:39Jon: mm-hmm.
- 52:40I don't necessarily think it's really either of those.
- 52:43I think it's more he let him in so he could accompany Todd to the end.
- 52:50Kearns: him at that point.
- 52:51And then Vera
- 52:53Jon: Yeah.
- 52:53Kearns: sort of, now does she save Indy or does Indy choose to live?
- 52:58That's the big thing with this because Indy could choose to sit
- 53:01next to Todd and die with them.
- 53:04Ryan: that's
- 53:05Jon: he could, but I mean, I mean that's sort of, would fly in the face of Todd's
- 53:11sort of final wishes to Indie too.
- 53:13Kearns: that well
- 53:16Jon: Yeah.
- 53:16Kearns: specifically,
- 53:17Jon: Yeah.
- 53:17Kearns: it had
- 53:18Jon: So.
- 53:18Kearns: a little bit more than I might've thought this kind of movie
- 53:20would have me thinking at the end, which I appreciated about this movie.
- 53:24Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 53:25Kearns: That's a good movie.
- 53:27Jon: Yep.
- 53:28Kearns: rate this.
- 53:28SOB Boys.
- 53:29What do you, what do you got on
- 53:31Jon: Yeah.
- 53:33Kearns: Out of five.
- 53:34Ryan: out a five.
- 53:37I'm gonna give it a five out of five.
- 53:41Kearns: It's a perfect movie.
- 53:42It's a perfect movie.
- 53:43Ryan: is a perfect
- 53:44Kearns: It's a perfect movie.
- 53:45Everybody.
- 53:45Ryan: I'm a, I'm a, I'm a dog owner.
- 53:48I understand.
- 53:49I relate to it very strongly.
- 53:51Um.
- 53:52Just the idea that your dog is your best friend.
- 53:57They're always gonna be loyal and there's a connection.
- 53:59And I could see my dogs in Indie and just how they, they are with
- 54:05me and how Indie's with Todd.
- 54:07And it's like, I'm sold.
- 54:10So that's my
- 54:11Kearns: We're gonna start calling Ryan's reviews are now
- 54:13called the subjective review.
- 54:15we're gonna call them.
- 54:17Jon: Listen, listen, I can, I can, I can see a case, the way I rate movies
- 54:21to say that this is a five also.
- 54:23I won't, but I can see where like, 'cause this, this is one
- 54:28of those that fits what it's,
- 54:30Kearns: in another universe have given this a five.
- 54:34Jon: it, it, it, it fits it, it does exactly what it sets out to do.
- 54:41It doesn't overstay, its welcome.
- 54:43It tells a story that has some emotional heft to it.
- 54:49But that said, I think it's a four for me.
- 54:52I think it's a really, really good movie.
- 54:54I don't think it's perfect,
- 54:56Kearns: you give it a
- 54:57Jon: but I think
- 54:57Kearns: Okay.
- 54:58Jon: a four, no, I'm a straight for a straight for on this one.
- 55:02I, it may go higher or watching it more.
- 55:06'cause it's definitely something I'll revisit I had not immediately,
- 55:10because I think it's something that needs room to breathe.
- 55:14You need to take some space from it to, to come back to it.
- 55:18Kearns: through at this one.
- 55:19Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 55:20Kearns: yeah, it's like in the Olympics
- 55:21Jon: But yeah.
- 55:22Kearns: challenge, like the challenging nature of the move is a certain
- 55:27part of the score and then actually landing it as a part of the score.
- 55:32This isn't that hard to
- 55:33Jon: Yeah.
- 55:33Kearns: as far as like what they did with the movie story and things like that.
- 55:37Yeah.
- 55:37It's difficult to do a movie with your dog over four or three
- 55:40years, 400 days of shooting.
- 55:43But like, can't give it higher than I'm giving it a four as well,
- 55:46by the way, because I loved it.
- 55:47Um, but it's just not, there's not enough to lift up the mountain mountaintop
- 55:52to put it in the, in the echelon of the five star movies that exist.
- 55:55I don't think I've given one five yet here.
- 55:59Jon: Frankenstein, I think.
- 56:01Kearns: did I give that a five?
- 56:02Jon: I think Frank, I think Frankenstein might have swept with fives.
- 56:06Kearns: I don't regret it.
- 56:07Jon: I think I'd have to,
- 56:09Kearns: like that was
- 56:09Jon: I'd have to go back and make to make sure, but I,
- 56:12Ryan: on that list we wrote, we would've stashed him over
- 56:15Kearns: I would give, I would give Shape of Water a five, maybe.
- 56:18I would give Frankenstein a five and not lose any sleep over it.
- 56:23this is an amazing movie and it's definitely, if you guys haven't
- 56:26seen it and you listen to this episode, shame on you first of all.
- 56:28And second of all, go watch this movie.
- 56:29It's really good.
- 56:31It's really good.
- 56:33Jon: and it's, it, it'll take you about the same length of time as
- 56:38an episode of some TV show that you're not gonna pay attention to.
- 56:41Kearns: of Dragons is this movie,
- 56:43Ryan: Yep.
- 56:44Kearns: so.
- 56:44All right guys.
- 56:45That was a good one tonight.
- 56:47Ryan: That was
- 56:48Kearns: enjoyed that.
- 56:50All right, it's time for some
- 56:51Jon: Yeah.
- 56:52Kearns: some top fit, fit, if it is.
- 56:53Ryan: top fives and I went the animal route.
- 56:57I went with top five animals.
- 56:58I, I went broad 'cause like
- 57:01Kearns: He did top five broads.
- 57:02Ryan: no top five broad animals.
- 57:05Jon: That's sexist Ryan.
- 57:07Ryan: animals, broad.
- 57:08Jon: so, so it's female animals.
- 57:10Ryan: broad.
- 57:11So it's, it's all around.
- 57:12It's all around.
- 57:13And we're gonna start off.
- 57:14Kearns: Fat.
- 57:14Female animals.
- 57:16Ryan: not that
- 57:17Kearns: Why are they so round?
- 57:18They're all
- 57:19Jon: Oh,
- 57:19Ryan: it's every animal.
- 57:21It's
- 57:21Jon: wow.
- 57:22Ryan.
- 57:23Ryan: All
- 57:23Kearns: Oh, okay.
- 57:24Ryan: we're gonna start off with not the first one, which is a classic
- 57:29starring Caring Black, but we're gonna go with the sequel, and that's
- 57:33Trilogy of Terror Two, directed by Dan Curtis, starring Lizette Anthony.
- 57:37And it goes, there's three stories with it.
- 57:40The, uh, the Doll's the best, but we're gonna start off with
- 57:42number one, the graveyard rats.
- 57:45Basically a millionaire dies and his AV wife, who is having an
- 57:50affair, um, basically sneaks into his crypt to steal some jewels.
- 57:54And the rats get her
- 57:57Kearns: They get her good.
- 57:58Ryan: her.
- 57:58Oh yeah, they
- 57:59Kearns: Who's the real rat in that story though?
- 58:01Is it the AV wife or is it the rodents that devour her soul?
- 58:05Ryan: Lizette Anthony is, is the rat in that, in that feature?
- 58:09Kearns: She's master splinter for sure.
- 58:11Ryan: Which leads to my number four.
- 58:14It's a cult classic.
- 58:17I love sneaks, so I have to include Anaconda.
- 58:21I mean Jeff Lopez, ice Cube, John Voy, Eric Stotz, Jonathan Hyde.
- 58:26Owen Wilson.
- 58:28I think Danny
- 58:29Kearns: Really did have a good cat.
- 58:30God.
- 58:31Ryan: it's excellent cast.
- 58:33I mean, even John Voight's ponytail, but it's just not, it's horrible,
- 58:37but it's horrible in a good way.
- 58:41Jon: See, I don't think it's even horrible.
- 58:42I think it's pretty good.
- 58:44Ryan: Are you
- 58:44Jon: I think Anacon like Anacondas one of those,
- 58:47Kearns: a
- 58:47Jon: it it, it sets out to do something stupid and it achieves it.
- 58:52And you know what, I'm gonna say this too.
- 58:55The Jack Black Paul Rudd one kind of fun.
- 58:58Kearns: too.
- 58:59Jon: I kind of enjoyed it.
- 59:01Kearns: exactly what it, it, it tells you what it is from the beginning.
- 59:05Jon: Yeah,
- 59:05Kearns: Mm-hmm.
- 59:05Jon: yeah.
- 59:07It's kind of fun.
- 59:08Kearns: It's not a horror
- 59:09Jon: Listen, the No, no, the, the Anaconda sequels don't do are particularly good.
- 59:16But the original Anacon Anaconda is a solid, solid movie.
- 59:20Ryan: and like you get a young Owen Wilson, like, what else did like, I
- 59:23think that same year he did the Haunting.
- 59:26Kearns: Yeah, he was in a couple horror movies
- 59:28Ryan: yeah,
- 59:28Kearns: time.
- 59:29Ryan: but be honest, number three, I'm happy I didn't, you know, I
- 59:34stashed Sam Raey 'cause then I would've had to get rid of this movie.
- 59:37And that's, uh, crawl, um, stars, K Esco Rio and Barry Pepper as a
- 59:44daughter and father who along with their dog find themselves trapped
- 59:47in a crawl space of their home and prayed upon alligators during a cat
- 59:50category five hurricane in Florida.
- 59:53Um, have you guys seen crawl?
- 59:56Kearns: tried to,
- 59:57Ryan: I tried to.
- 59:58It's
- 59:58Kearns: I couldn't not, I couldn't,
- 1:00:00Ryan: it's so good like that.
- 1:00:02You're
- 1:00:02Kearns: I don't like it.
- 1:00:03Don't like it.
- 1:00:05Ryan: so good.
- 1:00:06Like
- 1:00:06Kearns: I don't like it.
- 1:00:07Ryan: swimming around.
- 1:00:08Kearns: Yeah.
- 1:00:08I was like, okay.
- 1:00:10Ryan: Well
- 1:00:11Kearns: I wasn't a believer,
- 1:00:12Ryan: if you don't like the waters and the alligators, do you prefer roads?
- 1:00:16Kearns: I just didn't like the movie.
- 1:00:17Oh, okay.
- 1:00:17I see.
- 1:00:18It's a lead in.
- 1:00:18Yes, I do prefer roads.
- 1:00:21Ryan: those roads?
- 1:00:21Kearns: That was damn roads
- 1:00:23Ryan: 'cause number two is pet cemetery.
- 1:00:25Kearns: nice.
- 1:00:27Ryan: so good.
- 1:00:27And like you get the, the cat gets brought back to life, the
- 1:00:31dog, and then you get into humans
- 1:00:32Kearns: Church I,
- 1:00:34Ryan: it's, so it's just, I might have to watch that tonight.
- 1:00:37It's my sleeping movie.
- 1:00:39Um, we
- 1:00:40Kearns: that's not a good idea
- 1:00:41Ryan: What, what do you mean?
- 1:00:42Kearns: because, because inevitably at this, especially at this age, you
- 1:00:45like this is a good idea and you're passing out and then some blood
- 1:00:48curdling scream rips you up 15 minutes after you've actually hit REM sleep
- 1:00:53and you're awake for four hours now.
- 1:00:56Ryan: waiting to hear the footsteps.
- 1:00:58Kearns: Exactly.
- 1:00:59Ryan: I was waiting to hear the footsteps of the little kid with the scalpel
- 1:01:03Kearns: Oh, also that's terrifying too.
- 1:01:04That's a good point.
- 1:01:05Ryan: right under
- 1:01:05Kearns: That happened when I was sick.
- 1:01:07I was, it was like a mid-afternoon passing out and I got jarred awake
- 1:01:11by whatever was on TV being 10 times louder for a second and I was up again.
- 1:01:16I was like, no.
- 1:01:17I was like blissfully unconscious from my pain for a second.
- 1:01:20God damn it.
- 1:01:23Uh, anyway,
- 1:01:25Ryan: Well, this is my number one, so this is gonna be painful.
- 1:01:30And my number one is a classic directed by Alfred Hitchcock.
- 1:01:33Kearns: Hitchcock,
- 1:01:35Ryan: You gotta go with the birds.
- 1:01:37And they're like the main attraction man in the horror film
- 1:01:41Kearns: they are
- 1:01:41Ryan: people killing people.
- 1:01:43It's like
- 1:01:43Kearns: their eyes out.
- 1:01:44Ryan: Yes.
- 1:01:46Jon: Yep.
- 1:01:47Ryan: but that's my
- 1:01:48Jon: Yeah,
- 1:01:49Ryan: And we don't even know what happened, why those birds went crazy.
- 1:01:52There's no answer.
- 1:01:55Kearns: They should have done that when they're happening.
- 1:01:57Chamal, M and Dingdong should have done that.
- 1:02:00Ryan: yeah, he, he messed up, but
- 1:02:02Kearns: He messed up a lot, a lot of different ways.
- 1:02:06Jon: yeah,
- 1:02:06Kearns: All right, it's,
- 1:02:07Ryan: that's
- 1:02:08Jon: yeah.
- 1:02:08Ryan: five.
- 1:02:08Kearns: John's top five times.
- 1:02:10Good job Ryan.
- 1:02:11Good job Ryan.
- 1:02:12Ryan: Thank you.
- 1:02:12Thank you.
- 1:02:14Jon: My, my top five is not that dissimilar from Ryan's.
- 1:02:17I focus on a single animal
- 1:02:20Ryan: Not broad.
- 1:02:21Jon: I went with,
- 1:02:23Kearns: Not big
- 1:02:23Jon: not broads,
- 1:02:24Kearns: Female
- 1:02:25Jon: mean, some of them, some, some of them might be, might be broads,
- 1:02:30but they, it's, it's not that broad.
- 1:02:33I went with um, top five good boys who live
- 1:02:38Ryan: Oh.
- 1:02:38Kearns: XXL.
- 1:02:42Jon: top five good boys who live.
- 1:02:44So I wanna start with, with three honorable mentions.
- 1:02:47Two of them are honorable mentions because I put 'em on lists like
- 1:02:51within the last month and a half.
- 1:02:53Um, one of them is Nanuk from the Lost Boys and um, Barney from Gremlins.
- 1:03:03And um, I want to acknowledge the gateway to horror.
- 1:03:06That is Scooby Do.
- 1:03:08Kearns: enough.
- 1:03:08I,
- 1:03:08Ryan: you could have put the movie on there.
- 1:03:10Jon: SC Scoo, Scooby Doo and George Romero.
- 1:03:13I don't consider the movie, I don't really consider Scooby to be horror.
- 1:03:17I think he's horror adjacent.
- 1:03:19It's more like scary mysteries.
- 1:03:21Ryan: Scooby Doo, and Zombie Island.
- 1:03:22My sir. That was a horror film.
- 1:03:25I,
- 1:03:26Jon: I haven't seen all the, all of those, but the,
- 1:03:28Kearns: if I shared it with one of you or not, or you guys shared it with
- 1:03:31me or whatever, but it's Velma she's in like a time thing with Scooby.
- 1:03:38It's really trippy.
- 1:03:40then he, he
- 1:03:41Jon: I think I,
- 1:03:42Kearns: her, like every, she realizes she's not the first
- 1:03:45MEMA and he has to kill her.
- 1:03:46Jon: yes, yes, yes, yes.
- 1:03:47Yeah,
- 1:03:47Kearns: out.
- 1:03:48Jon: yeah, yeah.
- 1:03:50I don't remember if you shared that with me or if I found it on my
- 1:03:52own, but I've definitely seen that.
- 1:03:54Yeah.
- 1:03:54Kearns: up.
- 1:03:54I like that.
- 1:03:55Ryan: I gotta see that.
- 1:03:56Kearns: We're gonna find it
- 1:03:57Jon: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:03:58Ryan: Oh, please.
- 1:04:01Jon: So we'll start with number five, and it's Ebu from Poltergeist.
- 1:04:07Ryan: Wait.
- 1:04:08Oh, we
- 1:04:08Jon: Yeah.
- 1:04:09Ryan: Toby Hooper.
- 1:04:10He doesn't exist.
- 1:04:13Jon: I did not get rid of Toby Hooper.
- 1:04:15Kearns: such
- 1:04:15Jon: You clowns got rid of Toby Hooper.
- 1:04:18I did not.
- 1:04:19Ryan: universal.
- 1:04:21Jon: I did not.
- 1:04:22No, it's just for you guys.
- 1:04:25It is just for No, no.
- 1:04:27Wait.
- 1:04:27You guys think these games apply to me?
- 1:04:30Kearns: I thought there was the.
- 1:04:31Jon: Oh, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no.
- 1:04:33This is all, this is all only in your, your worlds, your realms.
- 1:04:39Do, do these movies no longer exist.
- 1:04:41They, they still exist to me.
- 1:04:43I, I am not, I am not endorsing some of the things you guys
- 1:04:47have slashed over, over.
- 1:04:49These games.
- 1:04:51Ryan: it's a lot of re
- 1:04:51Jon: Um, but back to, back to good boy Buzz.
- 1:04:55Um, he's the traditional family dog.
- 1:04:57He's loyal, he's protective, he's part vacuum, and he is damn cute.
- 1:05:02Buzz also helps Carol Ann mourn her canary at the Canary funeral and he
- 1:05:07helps find her when she vanishes.
- 1:05:10Good boy, buzz.
- 1:05:12Good boy.
- 1:05:13Um, my number four, we're gonna get Barney on this list anyway because number
- 1:05:19four is Gypsy in pumpkin Head, who is the same dog as Barney from Gremlins.
- 1:05:24Kearns: I didn't realize that.
- 1:05:25Cool.
- 1:05:26Ryan: Okay.
- 1:05:27Jon: I didn't either until I was looking off this list.
- 1:05:30Um, so Gypsy is played by Mushroom, the same dog who played
- 1:05:34Barney, so a two time hero pup.
- 1:05:37Ryan: Nice.
- 1:05:37Jon: Um, while Gypsy is inadvertently involved in the incident that leads
- 1:05:42to the death of Billy Harley and the resurrection of Pumpkinhead,
- 1:05:45he's a dog, so it's not his fault.
- 1:05:49He is a dog.
- 1:05:50It's not his fault and he's a good boy.
- 1:05:53Ryan: He was just playing
- 1:05:54Jon: Gypsy's a good boy.
- 1:05:56Or maybe playing a girl in this, I'm not sure.
- 1:05:59I feel like Gypsy is very often a girl name.
- 1:06:02Um,
- 1:06:03Ryan: both.
- 1:06:04Kearns: I just don't
- 1:06:05Jon: but I don't know.
- 1:06:06I don't know.
- 1:06:07Kearns: That's all I know about them.
- 1:06:08Jon: I don't know.
- 1:06:08Na na name me.
- 1:06:10Name your dog, what you wanna name your dog.
- 1:06:12My number three is a very good boy.
- 1:06:16It's Toby from
- 1:06:17Kearns: Um,
- 1:06:18Jon: the 13th, part eight.
- 1:06:20Jason takes Manhattan.
- 1:06:22Toby.
- 1:06:24Toby doesn't mess with danger though.
- 1:06:25He flees.
- 1:06:28He runs when there's danger, but that doesn't make him less of a good boy.
- 1:06:32He's just a smart, good boy.
- 1:06:34Kearns: With self preservation skills.
- 1:06:37Jon: Yes, he's frightened by a vision of Jason drowning, but
- 1:06:41Toby's true strength as is as an emotional support dog for Renny.
- 1:06:46And he eventually gains enough courage to intervene when muggers come after her.
- 1:06:53Good boy, Toby.
- 1:06:56Um, my number two, we're gonna visit Ryan's list for, for our
- 1:07:01good girl sugar from Crawl.
- 1:07:06Yep.
- 1:07:06So, I mean, Ryan ran it down pretty good.
- 1:07:09I'll give you a another one.
- 1:07:11Um, Alexander Aja Hurricanes, alligators, but sugar, the dog is arguably the biggest
- 1:07:17hero, providing constant distractions from the hungry Gators so her newly
- 1:07:22found people can escape good girl sugar.
- 1:07:29And my number one,
- 1:07:31Kearns: soundbite.
- 1:07:32Jon: my number one.
- 1:07:33Yep.
- 1:07:34Ryan: my, uh,
- 1:07:34Jon: Yeah.
- 1:07:35May maybe the best, maybe the best good boy in any, in any horror movie.
- 1:07:42It's Harry from the Amityville Horror,
- 1:07:47the original 1979 version, because among, among its other
- 1:07:52failures, the remake kills the dog.
- 1:07:55Okay.
- 1:07:56Kearns: You're right.
- 1:07:58Yeah.
- 1:07:58It's not okay.
- 1:08:00Jon: Um, while his incessant barking bothers his family, it's a
- 1:08:05warning that they don't listen to.
- 1:08:07Remember we said it early in the episode?
- 1:08:10Dogs and kids see the ghosts first.
- 1:08:14Um, his warning falls on deaf ears, but our brave, good boy persists.
- 1:08:23Good boy, Harry.
- 1:08:25Ryan: Good job, Harry.
- 1:08:27Jon: And that's my top five.
- 1:08:28Good boys in horror who survive.
- 1:08:30Kearns: that was a good one
- 1:08:31Jon: And then there's a couple others.
- 1:08:33There's a couple others.
- 1:08:34I wa I was gonna do.
- 1:08:35The hills have eyes, but it's only 50 50 on dogs that survive.
- 1:08:39Kearns: gonna, yeah.
- 1:08:40Okay.
- 1:08:42We're not gonna honor that crap.
- 1:08:45All dogs go to heaven.
- 1:08:46Jon: I mean, listen, be Beast.
- 1:08:48Beast is a good boy.
- 1:08:49Beauty was a good girl.
- 1:08:51Ryan: All
- 1:08:51Jon: Poor beauty.
- 1:08:52Ryan: You
- 1:08:53Jon: RIP.
- 1:08:54Kearns: Throwing that out there, had to throw that out there.
- 1:08:56That was scarring too.
- 1:08:58We were kids, man.
- 1:08:59We didn't even, we
- 1:08:59Jon: Yeah.
- 1:09:00Kearns: that crap.
- 1:09:00Our parents made us watch that.
- 1:09:02Ryan: before time.
- 1:09:03Kearns: I,
- 1:09:05Jon: The amount of scarring I got as a seventies and eighties kid water.
- 1:09:10Water shipped down at like eight years old.
- 1:09:13Kearns: it's there.
- 1:09:14The fact that nobody like taught them that, just 'cause there's animals in the
- 1:09:17movie doesn't mean it's a kid's movie.
- 1:09:20Although all dogs go to Heaven was a kid's movie, but still
- 1:09:24Ryan: it, yes.
- 1:09:25Kearns: watership
- 1:09:26Jon: Watership down, bro.
- 1:09:27Whoa.
- 1:09:28Kearns: We watched that in school, but like
- 1:09:30Jon: Oh
- 1:09:31Kearns: like ninth graders to eighth grade or something.
- 1:09:34Ryan: John's
- 1:09:34Kearns: who?
- 1:09:36Ryan: from
- 1:09:36Kearns: right guys.
- 1:09:37Jon: no.
- 1:09:38I If, if we wa, if we watched that when I was in school, I
- 1:09:41think I cut that whole unit.
- 1:09:43Ryan: year.
- 1:09:43April Fool's Day.
- 1:09:44Xenomania.
- 1:09:45Watership down.
- 1:09:47Kearns: Uh, let's see.
- 1:09:48Jon: Hell no.
- 1:09:51I am never watching that movie again.
- 1:09:54Kearns: this, but for that, for this week, guys, that was good.
- 1:09:57Boy.
- 1:09:58I hope you enjoyed it.
- 1:09:59We're getting outta here.
- 1:10:00Ryan: Have a going, guys.
- 1:10:05Jon: Hey.
- 1:10:05Yeah.
- 1:10:05Kearns: All right.
- 1:10:06Be very afraid
- 1:10:19Be very afraid
