- 0:03This is Living Waters of Grace, the teaching ministry of Clark
- 0:08Wofford, senior pastor of Calvary Chapel of Westmoreland,
- 0:12County of Greensburg, PA. Now here's Pastor Clark as he
- 0:16continues teaching through God's Word.
- 0:37Because they were prevented by death from continuing.
- 0:40But he, because he continues forever, has an unchangeable
- 0:45priesthood. Therefore he is able to save to
- 0:48the uttermost those who come to God through him.
- 0:52Since He always lives to make intercession for them, He's able
- 0:56to save to the uttermost those who come to Him, mediating on
- 1:02our behalf, praying to the Father on behalf of us, and
- 1:07we're taught to do what He does. Did you know that Jesus is
- 1:11praying for you right now? The Bible is clear.
- 1:15Jesus is making intercession, which is just a fancy word for
- 1:20praying right now. As you hear the sound of my
- 1:24voice, as you listen to Pastor Clark teach through the 8th
- 1:27chapter of the Book of Revelation, Jesus is praying for
- 1:31you. This is a wonderful and life
- 1:33giving truth that should impact your day-to-day life.
- 1:38Now this should also stir you to pray for others, to lift others
- 1:43into the presence of Jesus so that they may experience the
- 1:47deep peace of Christ. Now here's Pastor Clark in
- 1:51Revelation Chapter 8 with today's edition of Living Waters
- 1:55of Grace. Heavens worship is it's
- 1:58completely unlike anything that any of us have ever touched or
- 2:00experienced, believe me. And so it says that there's
- 2:03silence in the midst of this period that John is about to
- 2:07encounter. The sound is deafening.
- 2:10The silence is deafening because what's about to transpire on the
- 2:14face of the earth is horrendous, but also majestic in the sense
- 2:19that as Christ has opened those seals for the first time in the
- 2:26history of the universe, he has conveyed his full plan to all
- 2:32the angelic hosts. And they're speechless.
- 2:36They're astounded at what he has in store, not only in the sense
- 2:42of his anger and his wrath toward an unbelieving and
- 2:44ungodly world, but his plan for the future of his Church, the
- 2:48bride of Jesus Christ. So we see in verse one the
- 2:53mention of silence. We see in verse 2 the mention of
- 2:57musical instruments, trumpets. We see in verse 3 and 4 the
- 3:00offering of incense. And what's interesting is I
- 3:05don't know about you, but I've been in a lot of different kind
- 3:07of worship situations. I've been in like really crazy
- 3:10stuff where people are jumping around and running around and
- 3:12dislike doing all kind of wild stuff.
- 3:14And I've been in real conservative type of worship
- 3:17experiences. I've experienced liturgical
- 3:19worship experiences, experience, obviously Calvary Chapel kind of
- 3:23worship experiences. But as good as we might think
- 3:27our worship is, and it is good, we have a godly worship leader
- 3:31and team. These guys love the Lord and
- 3:33give their hearts to serve Christ fully and worship every
- 3:37week. But we fall short, don't we?
- 3:42We all fall short of understanding what true worship
- 3:45is. It's not an emotion or a high,
- 3:48although we can get kind of like joy, obviously, when we think
- 3:52about the greatness of God and worship him.
- 3:54But it's much deeper than that. And so we're getting a glimpse
- 4:00into heaven. Now as Protestants and as a New
- 4:04Testament Christians, we have an interesting perspective on how
- 4:08we look at the development of historical worship from the age
- 4:12of the Tabernacle, right, in the temple in the Old Testament,
- 4:14right? And we don't see any visible
- 4:17temple or Tabernacle right now in our day and age, right?
- 4:20But it's going to be rebuilt. The sacrifices will begin to
- 4:25continue during that time of the Tribulation.
- 4:27The Antichrist will set himself up in the temple as God, the
- 4:30abomination, the desolation, and a lot of very, very interesting
- 4:33things are going to occur. Even now in Israel.
- 4:36There is plans for the structure to build the the robes are being
- 4:41developed. The Sacramento aspect of how the
- 4:43Jewish nation connected and worshiped with God will be
- 4:46reinstituted. And but what I find fascinating
- 4:50is, is that from God's perspective, that never ended,
- 4:54right? It's still going on, even though
- 4:56there is no physical temple or Tabernacle on the earth right
- 5:00now in the sense of the way it was in Israel with the ark of
- 5:03the covenant and that kind of stuff.
- 5:04In heaven right now, there is this element of worship that
- 5:09most of us have never, ever encountered, But one day we
- 5:12will. And some people might say, I
- 5:15don't like the smell of incense. Some people get sick, get
- 5:18headaches when there's incense. But in heaven, the good news is
- 5:20when we're there, we won't have the the same kind of physical
- 5:23maladies. And incense will be awesome
- 5:25because it's like the most fragrant of perfumes and it it
- 5:30pleases God. He has it in his throne room
- 5:3424/7 throughout all eternity. And the incense represents the
- 5:39prayers of the Saints. We'll get into that in a minute.
- 5:41But in the Tabernacle or in the temple, there was a golden
- 5:46altar, different types of altars in the midst of the temple, the
- 5:49Tabernacle. But this specific altar was
- 5:51right before the veil entering into the Holy of Holies.
- 5:55And the responsibility of the temple priest was to burn
- 5:59incense because it represented the prayers of the nation of
- 6:03Israel and in heaven. Now, as we read, as John is
- 6:07teaching us, that this incense is representative of the prayers
- 6:12of Saints, believers throughout the course of human history.
- 6:18And so we see in verse one this silence.
- 6:21Again, just going back to this half hour of silence, it's
- 6:24dramatically indicating the profound awe at the opening of
- 6:29the 7th seal. It's no wonder that the Sarah
- 6:33from and Sheriff from can't help but to continually proclaim,
- 6:37holy, holy art thou, O God, if we were there, that's going to
- 6:41be our description. What else can we say?
- 6:45Holy, holy, holy, aren't you, O God.
- 6:48And Habakkuk chapter 2, verse 20, it says, but the Lord is in
- 6:52his holy temple. Let all the earth keep silence
- 6:55before him. God enjoys silence.
- 7:00We don't. We have to have noise all the
- 7:02time. We always have to have some kind
- 7:04of media on iPod, TV, headphones, music.
- 7:09I mean, the more noise, the more happy we seem to be at times.
- 7:13But you take a time of silence and that makes a lot of people
- 7:17uncomfortable. That's why prayer is so
- 7:20difficult at times, because it is a time of silence and we're
- 7:23before God and it's just our thoughts and our heart laid bare
- 7:27before Him. And sometimes that makes us a
- 7:30little awkward because we're not used to having silence.
- 7:32But God says that he's in His holy temple and it's pleasing to
- 7:38him that the earth would be silent before him.
- 7:41In Zephaniah chapter one, verse 7, it says be silent in presence
- 7:45of the Lord God for the day of the Lord is at hand.
- 7:49For the Lord has prepared a sacrifice and he's invited his
- 7:52guests. Be silent in the presence of the
- 7:56Lord. And again, it's something that
- 7:58sometimes we're not accustomed to.
- 7:59Or you get with some people and you're going to pray and this
- 8:03person prays and that person's that person prays.
- 8:05And then all of a sudden there's a period of silence and, and
- 8:08sometimes people like restless, well, like who's going to pray
- 8:11next? Or how long will this silence
- 8:13last? Does that mean we're done or is
- 8:14it over? But I think from God's heart,
- 8:17the silence represents just the beginning of our being open to
- 8:21what it is that He wants to say to us, more so than what we
- 8:24think we need to say to God. In Zechariah chapter 2, verse
- 8:2913, it says be silent all flesh before the Lord, for he is
- 8:34aroused from his holy habitation.
- 8:37Be silent, all flesh before the Lord, the one that you're all
- 8:41familiar with. Psalm 4610 Be still and know
- 8:45that I am God. I will be exalted among the
- 8:48nations. I will be exalted in the earth.
- 8:51And I think it's, it's healthy at times when we come together
- 8:55as as Christians and, and pray even on Thursdays, it isn't so
- 8:58much what we're saying, it's what we're hearing, right?
- 9:02Because so often our prayers are circular.
- 9:04Lord bless me, mine, you know, me, myself and I or bless my
- 9:10people or my family or my job or my finance.
- 9:12I mean, sometimes our prayers are like really, really boring.
- 9:15God hears him and he loves us. He's merciful.
- 9:17But like you realize you're saying the same thing all the
- 9:20time. You realize, like I've answered
- 9:22like the majority of those things, but you're still asking
- 9:25me and I've already done it. I mean, do you have any capacity
- 9:28to pray outside your comfort zone, to pray for people that
- 9:32you don't know or situations that you're normally not
- 9:34interested in? You have the heart to let me put
- 9:38my heart in there to expand your awareness of what it is I
- 9:42specifically want you to pray about right now at this time and
- 9:45this day and this age. And verse 2 of Revelation 8, we
- 9:51see these 7 angels. I saw 7 angels who stand before
- 9:55God, and to them are given the seven trumpets.
- 9:58These bodily powers that Victoria so beautifully sung
- 10:02about represent the Old Testament priests who also
- 10:07sounded the trumpets during the temple worship.
- 10:09You know, sometimes when we read the New Testament and the Book
- 10:13of Revelation and disconnect it from the roots of what worship
- 10:16has been about since the beginning of time, we, we
- 10:19unfortunately distort really what the meaning is or we, we
- 10:22pull things unfortunately sometimes out of context.
- 10:25But in Joshua chapter 6, verse 13, it refers to these guys.
- 10:29It says the seven priests bearing 7 trumpets of Ram's
- 10:32horns before the ark of the Lord went on and continually and blew
- 10:38the trumpets. And you remember what happened
- 10:41eventually as a result of blowing those trumpets, right?
- 10:44The walls fell down, God moved miraculously.
- 10:46First Chronicles chapter 16, verse 6.
- 10:49Benanaya and Jehaziel, the priest regularly blew the
- 10:54trumpets before the Ark of the Covenant of God.
- 10:58Psalm 96, Six, honor and majesty are before him.
- 11:01Strength and beauty are in his sanctuary.
- 11:04So we see this view of heaven of of music, right?
- 11:09Where's the guitars? Now there is stringed
- 11:11instruments you'll read about in Revelation, but in this
- 11:15instance, there's trumpets and verse 3.
- 11:18This is when it gets interesting.
- 11:20Then another Angel having a golden censor came and stood at
- 11:24the altar. He was given much incense that
- 11:27he should offer it with the prayers of all the Saints upon
- 11:31the golden altar which was before the throne.
- 11:36Much incense is present in heaven, much incense, and it's
- 11:41offered along with the prayers of the Saints.
- 11:45If you go back to chapter 5 of Revelation verse 8, it says now
- 11:51when he had taken the scroll, the four living creatures and
- 11:54the 24 elders fell down before the Lamb, each having a harp and
- 11:58golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of the
- 12:03Saints. Psalm 141 two says, let my
- 12:07prayer be set before you as incense, the lifting up of my
- 12:12hands as the evening sacrifice. I mean the beauty of how God
- 12:18designed worship for Himself. It's not about us.
- 12:22We're given the privilege to worship Him.
- 12:24But whenever we can worship Him the way He has orchestrated and
- 12:29desired, what does that do to His heart?
- 12:32Let my prayer be set before you. Psalm 141.
- 12:35Two as incense, the lifting up of my hands as the evening
- 12:40sacrifice. So we see in Revelation that
- 12:43incense is the visible sign of the prayers of all the people.
- 12:47Symbolism is important. The dove represents the Holy
- 12:50Spirit. The cross represents the
- 12:54crucifixion, the death of burial and resurrection of Christ.
- 12:57Baptism. Immersion is a sign of dying to
- 13:01our sin and coming out as new people, new life, the Lord's
- 13:07Supper that we take every week. The bread represents Christ's
- 13:11body. The cup represents His blood.
- 13:15God is not making this stuff up as He goes along.
- 13:19These are specific things He has put in place that we might truly
- 13:24know how to worship Him. You remember in the Old
- 13:26Testament when those priests took strange license to attempt
- 13:33to worship God with strange fire and strange incense?
- 13:38It wasn't pleasing to Him. We have to think about our own
- 13:43worship before him. Lord, does this really please
- 13:45you today so much worship today. And I'll tell you guys and and
- 13:49these guys work real hard to pick the songs that are about
- 13:52God to God for God, not songs that are you could sing to your
- 13:56girlfriend or your wife, you know that are just like you were
- 13:59these words. What do they mean but songs that
- 14:02are doctrinally correct and pure and magnify the glory of of God
- 14:07in Malachi chapter one, verse 11, it's interesting.
- 14:10It says for from the rising of the sun even to its going down.
- 14:14That's that's a picture of eternity.
- 14:16My name shall be great among the Gentiles and every place incense
- 14:21shall be offered to my name for my name shall be great among the
- 14:25nations, says the Lord of hosts. He says in every place, in every
- 14:30place. Incense is a beautiful gift that
- 14:35was given to our Lord at His birthright.
- 14:40Incense, frankincense and myrrh were given to Him at His birth
- 14:45and we see as we reflect on the Jewish temple, the worship its
- 14:49continuation in heaven. I love this section in Luke
- 14:54chapter one, verse 9 through 11. According to the custom of the
- 14:58priesthood, his lot fell to burn incense.
- 15:02This is Zacharias as he's doing his responsibility before the
- 15:07altar of God and the Angel of God is speaking to the family
- 15:13that Elizabeth is going to have a child and it's an
- 15:17impossibility because she's been barren.
- 15:19How in the world can this happen and he's burning the incense and
- 15:23he he went into the temple of the Lord and the whole multitude
- 15:27of the people were praying outside at the hour of incense
- 15:31again the the the community when the prayers of the the incense
- 15:35was the representation that we now are lifting up the
- 15:39fragrance. Our prayers are like fragrance
- 15:41unto God. And an Angel of the Lord
- 15:43appeared to him to Zacharias standing on the right side of
- 15:48the altar of incense, A literal physical altar that is not any
- 15:53on earth at the time, but will also be in heaven.
- 15:56We're seeing John talk about it. So the worship and revelation is
- 16:01very different from ours, isn't it?
- 16:03Completely different from ours? And verse 4, it talks about the
- 16:07smoke of the incense with the prayers that are ascending
- 16:11before the Lord, and the smoke of the incense with the prayers
- 16:14that ascends. Saints ascended before God from
- 16:18the angel's hand. So the Angel has a sensor that's
- 16:24coals fire to burn the incense, and he's sensing that altar
- 16:30before God's throne. And God immediately sees that as
- 16:36the prayers of his people growing up into heaven from all
- 16:39the earth throughout all time, and that he has our prayers in
- 16:44bowls. I, I can't imagine the size of
- 16:46those bowls, that all the prayers of every person and
- 16:50every broken heart throughout all time has never been dumped
- 16:55out. And that one day all our prayers
- 16:58are going to be answered. And some prayers we're waiting
- 17:03for and waiting for, we think, well, God, did you miss that one
- 17:06or wasn't it important to God? Every prayer of his children is
- 17:12priceless, so priceless that he stores them all in these bowls.
- 17:18And verse 5, we see the Angel. He takes the sensor, fills it
- 17:25with fire from the altar, and he throws it to the earth.
- 17:29And there were noises, thunderings, lightnings and
- 17:32earthquake. The casting of this sensor to
- 17:35earth shows the prayers of the Saints in the sense of how long,
- 17:40Lord will it be till you bring righteousness, not vengeance on
- 17:44our part? Lord, I hope you get that person
- 17:46that really messed me up in my life years ago.
- 17:48I hope you get even with that dirtbag and that, you know,
- 17:51whatever. And we're just like, you know,
- 17:54no, it's not about that. It's God's righteousness that
- 17:57we're waiting to be completely satisfied.
- 18:02If you look at Revelation chapter 6, we were there a few
- 18:05weeks ago, 9:00 and 11:00. This is the heart of what is
- 18:08happening. When He opens the 5th seal.
- 18:10I saw under the altar the souls of those who had been slain for
- 18:13the word of God and for the testimony which they held.
- 18:16And they crowd with a loud voice, saying, How long, O Lord,
- 18:19holy and true, until you judge and avenge our blood on those
- 18:23who dwell on the earth. Then a white robe was given to
- 18:26each of them, and it was said to them that they should rest a
- 18:29little while longer, until both the number of the fellow
- 18:32servants and their brethren, who would be killed as they were,
- 18:36was completed. And so the the the prayer for us
- 18:39is OK. Lord, how long will these things
- 18:44occur on earth where mankind refuses to acknowledge your
- 18:48existence? Where we feel as countries that
- 18:52we don't need God, that we want to take down the crosses in
- 18:56public places. We want to eliminate the prayers
- 19:00from our Senate and our House and our government.
- 19:04We want to change the name of our country to something that is
- 19:09completely independent of God, who He is.
- 19:12You know, I don't make this stuff up.
- 19:14I have no political agenda. I hope you sense that when I
- 19:17preach, I'm not lifting up the Republican or Democratic Party,
- 19:22but the theocratic government of God.
- 19:25And God's justice is clearly revealed in the Scripture for
- 19:28what he says is right and what he says is wrong.
- 19:32And I don't care what ideology we have politically, if our
- 19:36ideology does not line up with God's intention, then we're to
- 19:42be judged. And we're the ones that are
- 19:44responsible for communicating what is true in our nation.
- 19:50The freedom of religion that we have the precious right to have
- 19:55in our country that is slowly being dismantled and we're not
- 20:00even clearly aware of it. The casting of the center to
- 20:04earth. Finally, the one who has the
- 20:07right to bring judgement. Casts that down and it
- 20:11represents the fire of God coming from heaven and the
- 20:15beginning of the second period of the tribulation, the
- 20:20devastation upon the earth begins to be poured out.
- 20:23The thunderings, the earthquakes signify the judgment of God and
- 20:28it is eminent at this point prior to, and we'll get into the
- 20:33rest of the chapter next week. Next week we'll get into the
- 20:37more radical aspects of the development of this difficult
- 20:40time on the earth. But then I think about this
- 20:43silence in heaven for half an hour.
- 20:45And if you pick up nothing from the sermon up until this point,
- 20:49think about this. This is a prophetic revelation
- 20:52that he's been given a long time ago.
- 20:55He's seen this. So really, the half hour is like
- 21:00a really long time for all of us right now.
- 21:03Christ is not willing that any should perish, but that all
- 21:05should should come to repentance, right?
- 21:08So from this vision of God's impending justice and wrath
- 21:13coming out upon the earth, we've had all these years to scope
- 21:16this landscape out and have an opportunity to let people know
- 21:20that today is a day of salvation.
- 21:23It isn't too late to repent. You can still come to Christ.
- 21:26You can still be saved. All the people we love and care
- 21:28about, it's not too late yet, but you don't want them to be on
- 21:33this earth at the end of that half hour time period which we
- 21:37still have time. In verse 3, as we begin to
- 21:42conclude, there is this other Angel, this other Angel, another
- 21:45Angel. It's very interesting how this,
- 21:48this angelic being is depicted. He came and he stood at the
- 21:52altar of incense and offered prayers up to the throne of God,
- 21:59the ministry of intercession, the one whoever lives to make
- 22:04intercession before the throne of God.
- 22:07Night and day for who? For you and me.
- 22:10Your prayers for me are valued, and I trust my prayers for you
- 22:13like we pray for you guys. But there is one who is ever
- 22:17living to make intercession before the throne of the Father,
- 22:22night and day. He does not sleep, He does not
- 22:24become weary. He's constantly praying for the
- 22:28things that are on your hearts, guys and gals, the ministry of
- 22:33intercession. And we intercede, as Ron talked
- 22:36about on Thursday nights. What we're doing is we're
- 22:38lifting our own prayers up before the Father on behalf of
- 22:42one another and the person we believe that this Angel
- 22:47represents as Jesus Christ himself.
- 22:49For it says in Hebrews 924 For Christ has not entered the holy
- 22:52place made with hands, which are copies of the true, but into
- 22:56heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God for us.
- 23:02And Hebrews Chapter 7, verse 23 and 24 also there were many
- 23:06priests, because they were prevented by death from
- 23:10continuing. But He, because he continues
- 23:13forever, has an unchangeable priesthood.
- 23:16Therefore, He is able to save to the uttermost those who come to
- 23:20God through Him, since He always lives to make intercession for
- 23:25them. He's able to save to the
- 23:27uttermost those who come to Him. He's mediating on our behalf,
- 23:33praying to the Father on behalf of us, and we're taught to do
- 23:38what He does, to pray to the Father on behalf of one another.
- 23:42It's a privilege to be given the opportunity to stand in a place
- 23:45of intercession. It's the greatest ministry of
- 23:48all because that's what our Savior does 24/7, right?
- 23:51He's interceding before the throne for you and me.
- 23:56This has been Living Waters of Grace with Pastor Clark.
- 24:00We're going through the challenging and also intriguing
- 24:03Book of Revelation. Whether you're a fan of reading
- 24:06ahead in books of fiction, there's such a benefit to
- 24:09reading ahead in the Bible to read about how it all ends.
- 24:13But in an interesting turn of events, the Book of Revelation
- 24:17is not really the end, but rather the beginning.
- 24:21It's the end of life as we know it here on earth.
- 24:24But there's so much to look forward to for what comes after
- 24:28all the judgment of the earth and those who reject God.
- 24:32There's a lot to work through, and it can be heartbreaking to
