- 0:00Some people light up a room when they walk in, others when they
- 0:05leave. There's a story behind that.
- 0:08This is your daily message from Chadbur 1197 to upgrade your
- 0:12mental game today by telling yourself a better story.
- 0:15Because the most important story you hear is the story you tell
- 0:17yourself. This message is dedicated to
- 0:19John McCarthy. Here's the upgrade.
- 0:23You think your value is measured by what you produce, but
- 0:27upgraded thinking measures it by how much better the people
- 0:29around you play. Here's the story.
- 0:33John McCarthy coached high school and college basketball in
- 0:36New Jersey. Along with Doctor Rob Gilbert,
- 0:39he helped found the coaching institute at the Yogi Berra
- 0:41Museum at Montclair State University.
- 0:44He has a simple test for the Most Valuable Player on any
- 0:48team. It's not the one who scores the
- 0:49most. It's the one who makes everybody
- 0:52else better. McCarthy grew up in Boston in
- 0:55the 1950s and 60s, so he had a front row seat to the best
- 0:59example of that test there's ever been.
- 1:01Bill Russell joined the Boston Celtics in 1956.
- 1:05He played thirteen seasons. The Celtics won 11 championships
- 1:09during that time. The last two came with Russell
- 1:13as a player and coach. The first blackhead coach in NBA
- 1:16history and nearly 7 feet tall. He was literally head and
- 1:20shoulders above everyone else on the team.
- 1:22But he was never the league's top scorer.
- 1:24That wasn't the point. See what I did there?
- 1:28When Russell blocked a shot, he didn't swat it out of bounds.
- 1:31That may look great, but it gives the ball right back to the
- 1:33other team. He tipped it to a teammate.
- 1:36The block became a fast break. Somebody else got the basket.
- 1:39His defense let his teammates gamble on offense because they
- 1:43knew he was behind them. His rebounds turned into their
- 1:46points. His presence turned good players
- 1:50into champions. Russell put it this way.
- 1:53Quote. The most important measure of
- 1:55how good a game I played was how much better I'd made my team
- 1:59mates play in. Quote he didn't grade himself on
- 2:02his own stat line. He graded himself on everyone
- 2:04else's. That's a builder, a lifter, an
- 2:09Energizer and an improver. You don't need to be 7 feet tall
- 2:13to do it. You know a few Bill Russell's
- 2:16the Co worker who makes the meeting better just by showing
- 2:19up, the parent who makes the whole house calmer, the friend
- 2:22who leaves you braver than they found you.
- 2:25So here's the question McCarthy would ask you.
- 2:28If everyone on your team were just like you, what kind of team
- 2:32would it be? Your team might be your family,
- 2:35your office, your church, your Tuesday morning group.
- 2:39It doesn't matter. Somebody is playing better or
- 2:42worse today because you're in the game.
- 2:45Tip the ball to a teammate. Let someone else score.
- 2:49Go make somebody better today. The better story to tell
- 2:52yourself is my best game is measured by how well the people
- 2:56around me play. Just imagine getting a text
- 3:00today that says you make everyone around you better.
