- 0:02No, be afraid.
- 0:06Be very afraid.
- 0:16Ryan: Let's get ready to rumble for Battle Royal.
- 0:20Kearns: All right.
- 0:20That was good.
- 0:21That was pretty good.
- 0:22Ryan: My
- 0:23Kearns: I for one, I for one.
- 0:25Enjoy your announcer voice.
- 0:28But, Let's announce, let's, for once, let's announce what the, we're actually
- 0:32reviewing at the beginning of the episode.
- 0:35Ryan: Well,
- 0:36Kearns: It is,
- 0:37Jon: Did we.
- 0:40Kearns: Ryan, if you're gonna step on it, you might as well finish it.
- 0:43Ryan: it, it's Battle Royal.
- 0:44I'm sorry.
- 0:44I was so, I'm excited for this film.
- 0:46This film was a gem, Tarantino's Top 10.
- 0:50and it's understandable.
- 0:51It's haywire, it's chaotic.
- 0:54Solomon recommended to us.
- 0:55It's awesome.
- 0:58Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 0:58I,
- 0:58Ryan: bad I can say except that Hunger Game stole it.
- 1:01That's it.
- 1:02Jon: um,
- 1:03Kearns: That's
- 1:03Jon: Games straight up, stole it, but they, they
- 1:07Kearns: a bit.
- 1:08Jon: love this movie.
- 1:09I.
- 1:10Kearns: It's a good movie.
- 1:11Movie.
- 1:11It is Japanese if you haven't seen it.
- 1:13It is a good one.
- 1:15It's not as known,
- 1:16Jon: it's grown a nice cult following at this point.
- 1:20Kearns: yeah.
- 1:21Ryan: it has.
- 1:22Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 1:23But you'll, still find people who think it's the ripoff
- 1:27Ryan: Which I can see 'cause
- 1:29Jon: I.
- 1:29Ryan: is technically more popular.
- 1:33It's, it is, it's more popular than Better Royal, but I feel like
- 1:37Jon: Yeah.
- 1:38Ryan: and it getting around and people getting copies.
- 1:40Um, we watched me and Ence watched the dub version, so it was, it was
- 1:46Jon: Feels so bad
- 1:47Ryan: I, I want to get a copy to watch the subtitle version.
- 1:50Kearns: We have
- 1:51Jon: they're out there.
- 1:52Kearns: terrible and you can tell, you can tell you're missing a lot.
- 1:55Ryan: Okay.
- 1:55Fair on that.
- 1:56But I did enjoy it.
- 1:57I, I, especially the guy who voiced the, the teacher.
- 2:01Kearns: Yeah.
- 2:01Ryan: the best part movie.
- 2:03Kearns: Yeah, that's true.
- 2:06I watch a lot of anime and I always, it's almost, unless there's a great production
- 2:11team and stuff like that, the dubs are always worse than the subs anyway.
- 2:14It's like a rule.
- 2:15Ryan: Yeah, it's true.
- 2:18Kearns: and you can feel like there's a translation loss going on
- 2:21Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 2:22Kearns: with this big time and it brings you out of getting to, you don't
- 2:25care about the characters, which I guess in this movie it doesn't matter
- 2:27as much because many of them die.
- 2:30Jon: Most of them are not allow around very long.
- 2:33Kearns: But there is some, the movie really does work hard to make you have a
- 2:36connection with and understand, and the
- 2:39Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 2:39Kearns: takes a big hit from the dub based on what I could tell.
- 2:42Ryan: Yes.
- 2:43Jon: I think it does.
- 2:44Yeah.
- 2:45Ryan: Yeah,
- 2:45Kearns: So.
- 2:46Ryan: there's the, oh God, I'm gonna mess up on a lot of these names, but, um, uh,
- 2:51Mitsuko, like her backstory, I feel like.
- 2:55They cut a lot out with the English dub and I feel like with the Japanese
- 3:00version, it would have a little more of what she went through.
- 3:03'cause you get, you get the gist, but there's not as much detail.
- 3:08Kearns: Yeah.
- 3:10Jon: Yeah, she's a victim who then victimizes
- 3:14Ryan: And it's, it's an
- 3:15Jon: and.
- 3:15Ryan: antagonist arc.
- 3:18Kearns: Mm-hmm.
- 3:18They, I think they miss a step on trying to get you to identify with her a little
- 3:22bit and like understand she's still like, you know, she's still a villain.
- 3:26Ryan: Yes.
- 3:26Kearns: never,
- 3:27Jon: Yeah.
- 3:27Kearns: become sympathetic.
- 3:28Oh, I didn't.
- 3:28Anyway.
- 3:30Jon: No.
- 3:31They don't really give you the opportunity to feel too much sympathy for her.
- 3:36Kearns: In the Hunger Games, they don't do a great job of that either.
- 3:39To be honest with you.
- 3:39The
- 3:40Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 3:40Kearns: in
- 3:41Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 3:41Kearns: Suzanne Collins definitely stole this IP
- 3:45Ryan: Oh yeah.
- 3:46Kearns: Everything about it.
- 3:48Like, so there's a few big connections.
- 3:49The the age group there being kids that
- 3:53Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 3:54Kearns: the society condo, not only condoning, but like promoting and
- 3:59Jon: Celebrating.
- 4:00Kearns: it.
- 4:00Right?
- 4:01the way that they announce the, the participants that
- 4:05are no longer participating
- 4:07Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 4:08Kearns: The big bad has, there's parallels there and stuff.
- 4:12So, yeah.
- 4:13I'm glad people aired it out and I wish that it made more waves.
- 4:16'cause I remember when I was reading the Hunger Games, people were saying it
- 4:20was ripping off Battle Royale and that was in, I don't know, 2000 and whatever
- 4:25Ryan: Yep.
- 4:25Kearns: it was, like 11
- 4:28Ryan: yep.
- 4:28think the book came out in 2000, so it's like right in that
- 4:32Jon: I think the book was 99.
- 4:34Ryan: Oh, okay.
- 4:35Kearns: Games or
- 4:36Jon: Yeah.
- 4:36Kearns: Royale.
- 4:37Jon: Battle royale.
- 4:39Ryan: Alright.
- 4:40Jon: So there's definitely enough time where she, this could have very
- 4:46easily come into her consciousness.
- 4:48And this, this isn't like deep impact in Armageddon where you're working
- 4:53on similar things at the same time.
- 4:55Kearns: They were very different movies too.
- 4:57It's just the only
- 4:57Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 4:58Kearns: that's the same really is that there's a, meteor or comet or
- 5:02Jon: Yeah.
- 5:02Kearns: at us.
- 5:03Ryan: But
- 5:03Jon: Yeah.
- 5:04Ryan: still considered a ripoff.
- 5:08It.
- 5:08Kearns: Is it armageddons?
- 5:11Ryan: uh, they consider it.
- 5:12Yes, I was doing
- 5:14Kearns: How
- 5:14Jon: I mean they're, they're both kind of, they're both kind of
- 5:17rip offy at the end of the day.
- 5:19'cause there's a like seventies movie called Meteor that's pretty similar too.
- 5:23Ryan: Ooh, okay.
- 5:25Kearns: got it.
- 5:26Ryan: John's going in the history books tonight.
- 5:28Kearns: I know, right.
- 5:30So in Battle Royale,
- 5:31Ryan: I.
- 5:31Kearns: talk about.
- 5:33One aspect of it that's a little confusing.
- 5:37do the kids end up in the battle royale because they're all school
- 5:41chums from the same school.
- 5:42In this case, it's not like the other one where you get picked from
- 5:45a different district and all that.
- 5:46So how does, how does that work?
- 5:47Jon: They randomly, the people who run the Battle Royale program, which
- 5:52is government law at this point, randomly select a class each year.
- 6:01Kearns: Wild concept.
- 6:03Ryan: Do you,
- 6:03Jon: Right,
- 6:03Ryan: do you feel like
- 6:04Jon: right.
- 6:05Ryan: though?
- 6:06Because like the teacher who does choose it is the one who
- 6:09gets slashed in the beginning.
- 6:11Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 6:12I mean, It is presented as random.
- 6:15I, you know, I suspect there may be a, like a nominating process.
- 6:20I nominate my class as this year's Battle Royale participants.
- 6:25'cause they all suck.
- 6:27But like, it's one of those things, I think it's randomly chosen, but
- 6:31there may be a nomination process.
- 6:35Ryan: I don't know about that.
- 6:36I don't know about this for this one.
- 6:38'cause he got slashed by that kid and he was gunning for him.
- 6:44Jon: But I mean also that kid never came back to school
- 6:50Ryan: Fair.
- 6:51Jon: after that incident, so that kid was only on that trip because two
- 6:55other kids basically dragged him along.
- 6:58One other kid dragged him along, so now he's there.
- 7:01He wasn't even supposed to be there.
- 7:04I'm not even supposed to be here today.
- 7:09Kearns: I got a question for you, John.
- 7:11Do you have a
- 7:11Jon: Of course.
- 7:12Kearns: Do you wanna play a game?
- 7:14Jon: Of course I have a game.
- 7:15I have a new game for you guys.
- 7:18I have a new game for you guys.
- 7:19I, I'm gonna let you guys decide if you want to do it
- 7:23cooperatively or competitively.
- 7:28Ryan: do.
- 7:29Jon: And it is, it's brand new game.
- 7:31Well, brand new to us.
- 7:32It's keep or cut.
- 7:35Kearns: We're gonna argue, we're gonna argue
- 7:37Jon: Yeah.
- 7:38Kearns: cooperatively.
- 7:40Jon: I'm gonna give you Eight movies all with a similar theme, so it'll help
- 7:45you if you figure out what the theme is,
- 7:47Ryan: okay.
- 7:48Jon: with a similar theme you have to keep for and you cut for the four.
- 7:53You keep yours for eternity.
- 7:55The four you cut, gone forever.
- 7:59Ryan: Do, do you
- 7:59Kearns: I like it.
- 8:00Ryan: do you wanna go head to head?
- 8:02Kearns: Yeah.
- 8:03Let's go ahead to head.
- 8:03Also, do me a favor, move your, um, mic down to your chin.
- 8:06'cause it sounds like a wind tunnel.
- 8:08Ryan: My bad.
- 8:09Kearns: I'm good.
- 8:12Ryan: It's
- 8:12Kearns: See if
- 8:12Jon: let me pop this up.
- 8:14Kearns: better though.
- 8:15That's way better because like before it was like,
- 8:20Ryan: I
- 8:21Kearns: all right, let's go.
- 8:21Ryan: to breathe.
- 8:23Kearns: I have to breathe man.
- 8:24Ryan: breathe.
- 8:25Jon: All right, fellas.
- 8:27Can you see my screen?
- 8:28Ryan: Yes.
- 8:30Jon: All right, so movie number one.
- 8:34Ryan: Yep.
- 8:34Jon: Keep or cut the Shining the Shin.
- 8:40Ryan: Uh,
- 8:40Kearns: mean, all right, so wait, let me get this straight.
- 8:42How many of these are we keeping out of the eight?
- 8:44Ryan: four.
- 8:45Jon: Four.
- 8:46Keep four.
- 8:47Cut.
- 8:47Four.
- 8:49Ryan: I
- 8:50Kearns: How do you cut The Shining?
- 8:51Yeah.
- 8:51How do you cut The Shining?
- 8:53Ryan: This is gonna be a devil game though.
- 8:55You know
- 8:55Kearns: Yeah.
- 8:56Ryan: you know
- 8:56Kearns: can tell that this is a trick.
- 8:59Ryan: I, I'm
- 8:59Kearns: I'm keeping it, I'm keeping it.
- 9:01I can't do it.
- 9:03Is it, do we have to find a theme too, by the way?
- 9:06Jon: I mean they, it would help you.
- 9:08There is a theme, but it's not mandatory.
- 9:12But it may help you determine what might be coming.
- 9:16It is not Stanley Kubrick.
- 9:18Ryan: Driven by
- 9:18Kearns: All right.
- 9:21Jon: Nope.
- 9:21Kearns: Murdering your Wife.
- 9:24Ryan: Battle Royale.
- 9:25Jon: No.
- 9:26No.
- 9:26We did not go with the fantasy genre.
- 9:28Kerns.
- 9:32Kearns: All
- 9:33Jon: Alright.
- 9:33Kearns: This is, so
- 9:34Jon: two.
- 9:36Kearns: Aw, you, you're a bastard is what you are.
- 9:39I mean, I'm not cutting the tremors either, man.
- 9:41Tremors is, is just too good to pass up.
- 9:45I'm keeping it.
- 9:47Ryan: I am gonna cut it.
- 9:47Jon: Oh man,
- 9:49Kearns: I'm keeping it.
- 9:49I love tremors, dude.
- 9:51Ryan: I like it, but like
- 9:53Jon: tremors.
- 9:53Ryan: I've seen the second one more with Fred Willard.
- 9:57Not saying like
- 9:58Jon: You've seen the second one more than the first one.
- 10:01Oh my goodness, man.
- 10:03Kearns: First one was on TV all the time.
- 10:05Ryan: Sci-fi had the second.
- 10:07The first one was always on P 11.
- 10:09I remember
- 10:09Kearns: Yeah.
- 10:11Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 10:11Ryan: It's not bad.
- 10:12Reba McIntyre, Fred Willard, Kevin Bacon, but sorry, I gotta cut it.
- 10:18Jon: Are you calling Fred Ward?
- 10:19Fred Willard?
- 10:22Ryan: Damn it.
- 10:22Fred
- 10:23Jon: Is that what you're doing?
- 10:24Okay.
- 10:25Ryan: Nah,
- 10:25Jon: I, I just wanted to clarify that because I couldn't
- 10:27remember him in any of them.
- 10:30Like, wait, that guy, I don't remember that guy in Tremors.
- 10:33Ryan: Fred Ward ribs.
- 10:36Jon: All right,
- 10:36Kearns: And a little,
- 10:37Jon: so
- 10:38Kearns: the mic.
- 10:38Just like closer to the chin.
- 10:40Ryan: Hold on.
- 10:41Kearns: See?
- 10:41Are you hearing it too, John?
- 10:42Or is it just
- 10:43Jon: I am, yeah, no, I hear it.
- 10:44Ryan: on.
- 10:45Better.
- 10:48Kearns: so far?
- 10:48Laugh and huff and puff a little bit because that's when it come.
- 10:51Yeah, it's still there.
- 10:52Did you move?
- 10:52Not your ears.
- 10:53Adjust your mic down
- 10:54Ryan: Hold on.
- 10:55Kearns: your, this part.
- 10:57This.
- 10:57Ryan: As far as they can go, the
- 11:00Kearns: Okay.
- 11:01All right.
- 11:02That's a little better.
- 11:04Jon: Okay.
- 11:05Movie number three,
- 11:10Kearns: I'll cut it.
- 11:11Jon: cabin in the Woods.
- 11:12Kearns: it.
- 11:12I love
- 11:13Jon: Ooh.
- 11:13Kearns: the woods, but I'll cut it.
- 11:14This is um, this is like big brother style stuff right here.
- 11:20Oh no.
- 11:20That doesn't really apply to tremors.
- 11:23Jon: Or The Shining.
- 11:24Really?
- 11:24Ryan: working together.
- 11:27Jon: Nope.
- 11:29Ryan: All right.
- 11:29Kearns: Pause though.
- 11:30You're getting closer
- 11:31Ryan: I'll keep it though because I'm thinking eternity.
- 11:34Jon: Keep it.
- 11:34Ryan: watch it for Eternity.
- 11:36I can repeatedly watch Cabinet in the Woods in The Shining,
- 11:40Jon: All right.
- 11:42So you've both, you've both kept two.
- 11:44And cut.
- 11:45One,
- 11:46Kearns: so
- 11:46Jon: kept two.
- 11:47Cut one.
- 11:49Movie number four.
- 11:53Read carefully, gentlemen.
- 11:55Kearns: ooh, ooh,
- 11:57Ryan: Why are you doing this to me, John?
- 11:59I'm keeping
- 11:59Kearns: ooh.
- 12:00Ryan: love Day of the Dead.
- 12:01This was, as I've said before, this is my first dead movie ever seen.
- 12:06So yes, I so good.
- 12:11Why John?
- 12:12Why?
- 12:13I got one more choice.
- 12:16Jon: Yep.
- 12:16You have one more.
- 12:17Keep and you're only halfway through.
- 12:19Ryan: Ah, man.
- 12:20Kearns: cut it.
- 12:21I'm gonna cut it.
- 12:22I'm gonna cut it.
- 12:24Jon: It's bold.
- 12:26Kearns: It's dumb.
- 12:27I'm going, yeah,
- 12:28Jon: Or anger the guy running the game.
- 12:31Kearns: true.
- 12:32Taking a chance
- 12:34Jon: Next movie,
- 12:38the Mist.
- 12:40Kearns: Caught day.
- 12:40That doesn't keep the mist.
- 12:43I really did enjoy the mist a lot, but it's in contention with movies that
- 12:47are in a tear above it at the moment.
- 12:49Ryan: Yeah, I'm cutting it.
- 12:52Kearns: not many Stephen King movies that are actually horror movies that
- 12:55are very great, and The Shining is arguably not even a Stephen King movie.
- 13:01That's a Kubrick movie.
- 13:04Ryan: Oh, absolutely.
- 13:04in
- 13:05Kearns: this one, the Mist doesn't break outta that mold of not of like, you can
- 13:09feel the Stephen King movie aspects of it.
- 13:12Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 13:14Kearns: Yeah.
- 13:14I'm
- 13:15Jon: Yeah, I wanted to really love the mist, and I only like the mist.
- 13:20Kearns: I've watched it about three times.
- 13:22Um, yeah.
- 13:24I'm gonna cut it.
- 13:25Ryan: Have you guys seen it in
- 13:26Jon: All right.
- 13:28Yeah.
- 13:28I've watched the black and white.
- 13:29I, I when it, if I remember right, when it was first released physically, you had
- 13:36the choice to buy like one that had it in black and white and one that didn't.
- 13:40And I would purposely got it black and white to watch it.
- 13:43Ryan: cool.
- 13:44Yeah, no, it, I feel like it gives it more of an edge.
- 13:47film wise, it's a lot.
- 13:49Jon: It does.
- 13:50It does.
- 13:52I think my problem with it is I hold the story in such high regard,
- 13:57like that's one of my probably three favorite King short stories and
- 14:04Kearns: You know what stinks, by the way, and the short story,
- 14:06they go back to the house.
- 14:08He does
- 14:08Jon: E.
- 14:09Kearns: to go check up on his wife
- 14:10Jon: Yeah.
- 14:11Ryan: creep.
- 14:11Kearns: and they find that she's not doing great.
- 14:15That things didn't go well.
- 14:16I, no, I don't even know if they leave the car actually.
- 14:18I think they see that the house was breached
- 14:21Jon: Yeah.
- 14:22Kearns: like evidence that
- 14:23Jon: If I remember right, yeah.
- 14:24Kearns: and then, they decide to not bother with it.
- 14:27I
- 14:27Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 14:28Kearns: short story ends better than the movie as well, but people
- 14:30Jon: Ah, absolutely.
- 14:31Yeah.
- 14:32Yeah.
- 14:32No, I agree.
- 14:33Kearns: and I don't like ambiguous endings, but
- 14:36Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 14:36Kearns: that one.
- 14:37All right.
- 14:37Jon: Yep.
- 14:37Kearns: it
- 14:38Jon: All right.
- 14:39Next.
- 14:42Kearns: Keeping it,
- 14:45I gotta, I can't cut anymore.
- 14:47Can I?
- 14:47Oh, wait.
- 14:47No, I can cut more.
- 14:49Jon: Yep.
- 14:49You have one more cut and two more keeps.
- 14:52Kearns: cutting it.
- 14:53I
- 14:53Jon: Ooh,
- 14:54Kearns: descent too, or, yeah.
- 14:55I love this movie too.
- 14:57Ryan: Or I'm, I'm taking a chance and I'm cutting it.
- 15:00do like the descent, but I don't know.
- 15:02You're, you're throwing some things out
- 15:05Kearns: He's gonna put
- 15:06Jon: I think one
- 15:07Kearns: something
- 15:08Jon: think.
- 15:09I think one of you is gonna be very happy over the course of the next
- 15:13couple of movies, and one of you is not
- 15:16Kearns: It's gonna be me being upset.
- 15:19Yeah.
- 15:19He's
- 15:19Jon: a
- 15:19Kearns: it.
- 15:20He's ending it with a, a whimper.
- 15:22Uh,
- 15:23Jon: Yeah, I, I am absolute.
- 15:27Ah, no,
- 15:28Kearns: things that transform.
- 15:29Okay.
- 15:31Jon: no.
- 15:31Any guess Ryan?
- 15:33Ryan: Hmm.
- 15:35A
- 15:35Kearns: are not
- 15:36Jon: Uh, nope.
- 15:38Ryan: I haven't said that yet.
- 15:38Okay.
- 15:39Jon: No, you're, I mean, yes, but not, that wasn't what I was going for
- 15:45Ryan: Okay.
- 15:45Jon: now.
- 15:47Oh, ready?
- 15:49Here's where the, here's where the misery for one of you begins.
- 15:55Kearns: Oh,
- 15:56Jon: Alien.
- 15:57Kearns: Sorry Ryan,
- 15:58Ryan: hold on.
- 15:59Wait.
- 15:59But the misery Oh, be,
- 16:03Kearns: alien and you have to cut it right.
- 16:05Ryan: no, no.
- 16:05Jon: No, he can keep, he can keep alien, but he has to,
- 16:08he'll have to cut the last one.
- 16:13Kearns: Well, to keep 'em both and I'm pumped that alien
- 16:17when
- 16:18Ryan: I'm gonna, I'm gonna take a chance.
- 16:22I'm
- 16:22Jon: Ooh.
- 16:23Ryan: alien.
- 16:24I
- 16:24Jon: Whoa.
- 16:25Ryan: aliens more.
- 16:28I
- 16:29Kearns: worse than Day of the Dead.
- 16:30Definitely.
- 16:31Definitely worse.
- 16:34Jon: Whoa,
- 16:36Kearns: Aliens is an action movie.
- 16:37Alien is a horror movie.
- 16:39Ryan: But I, I gotta, I gotta cut it.
- 16:42Jon: Alien.
- 16:43Alien is, alien is the goat of sci-fi.
- 16:47Horror aliens is fun as hell.
- 16:51I love aliens.
- 16:53It's not alien.
- 16:55Ryan: It.
- 16:55Jon: Alien.
- 16:56Alien is as close,
- 17:00close to perfect as it could be, like
- 17:04Ryan: I don't know what
- 17:05Jon: cast
- 17:06Ryan: game
- 17:06Jon: acting
- 17:09Ryan: Like
- 17:10Jon: well.
- 17:10Ryan: kind of game you're playing.
- 17:11I'm either gonna be unhappy or happy and I'm taking the
- 17:15Jon: No, you're, you're, you're gonna ultimately be happy now because you
- 17:19dodged the absolute misery of what I have lined up, because movie number eight is
- 17:25Ryan: Yes, yes, yes.
- 17:30Kearns: up with the Shining the thing Alien and Tremors.
- 17:35Jon: Yep.
- 17:35Kearns: I'm cool with that.
- 17:37Ryan: See the
- 17:37Jon: Yep.
- 17:38Ryan: Shining cabin in the woods and Day of the Dead.
- 17:41Yeah, that's a good marathon for eternity.
- 17:43I'll take it,
- 17:44Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 17:45I would,
- 17:45Ryan: repeat.
- 17:48Jon: I would take, overall I would take Kern's list, but
- 17:53I'd drop the Shining for day.
- 17:55Ryan: Okay.
- 17:56Kearns: that's fair.
- 17:57That's a fair one.
- 17:58Yeah,
- 17:59Jon: This is,
- 17:59Kearns: just a good hang man.
- 18:01Jon: yeah.
- 18:02I don't love,
- 18:02Kearns: a daylight horror movie.
- 18:04Ryan: Yeah, I agree.
- 18:05Jon: yeah.
- 18:06Yeah.
- 18:06I don't love the Shining.
- 18:08Ryan: Really
- 18:08Jon: It's, yeah.
- 18:10Ryan: it.
- 18:10Jon: I don't know.
- 18:11Just,
- 18:12Kearns: house.
- 18:12That's what I feel
- 18:13Jon: it just,
- 18:14Kearns: does.
- 18:14Jon: just, it just doesn't, it doesn't hit me in the spots I needed to hit.
- 18:19Kearns: he's talking and it's going,
- 18:24we gotta
- 18:25Jon: Ryan.
- 18:26Stop breathing, Ryan.
- 18:28Kearns: for a second,
- 18:29Jon: Geez, man.
- 18:30Kearns: but it's not like this all the time.
- 18:32I don't know what the difference is.
- 18:33The only problem is it won't matter if he's doing it when we're doing
- 18:36normal editing, like if there's no sound in the background.
- 18:38But when you're talking, it's going to cover you talking.
- 18:44How do we fix it?
- 18:45It's not
- 18:45Jon: Hold your breath.
- 18:46Kearns: an attack on you as a person.
- 18:47Ryan,
- 18:48Jon: Hold your breath.
- 18:50It is an attack on you.
- 18:51No more breathing.
- 18:53Kearns: I don't know how to fix it though.
- 18:54And why doesn't it happen?
- 18:56Because those are your regular headphones.
- 18:58Ryan: Yeah, these are the, these are the normal headphones I always use.
- 19:03Kearns: What's different tonight than usual?
- 19:07I wonder.
- 19:08Jon: Can you pull the microphone a little further away?
- 19:13Not necessarily down, but out some
- 19:17Ryan: better.
- 19:19Kearns: Yeah, actually that's a good distance away compared to where it was.
- 19:22So maybe that'll
- 19:22Jon: I. Breathe.
- 19:26Kearns: Yes.
- 19:28Feel free to give me crap what happens to me too.
- 19:31Um, That was a fun game.
- 19:34That was a
- 19:34Jon: I like that one.
- 19:35Kearns: the
- 19:35Jon: I like that one.
- 19:36Ryan: What was the theme?
- 19:37Jon: Isolation.
- 19:39Ryan: That, yeah.
- 19:40Jon: is isolated just like they are in battle Royale.
- 19:43Isolated on a, uh, a forced deserted island.
- 19:49Ryan: which is really cool.
- 19:50I like that.
- 19:51It's like, again, as you said, isolated.
- 19:54Um, I like the abandoned school building as well.
- 19:57'cause it gives, like, I, I guess the idea is the school system has failed them.
- 20:03Kearns: Yeah.
- 20:04Ryan: they have to fight, survive in order to succeed, in
- 20:06life type deal is the message.
- 20:09Um, it's just
- 20:10Jon: The, adults don't trust the kids anymore.
- 20:12It's the, older, younger paranoia.
- 20:15Kearns: Right.
- 20:16That generational metaphor that crops up every once in a while.
- 20:20Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 20:21Kearns: We don't feel that for gen Z by the way.
- 20:23'cause they're so, like meek.
- 20:26There's no fear of Gen Z whatsoever.
- 20:29Ryan: no,
- 20:29Kearns: Six, seven.
- 20:31Jon: I don't know, but they, it, it's just expressed differently though.
- 20:35Like, remember Tide pods?
- 20:37Kearns: Yeah.
- 20:38Ryan: Mm-hmm.
- 20:38Kearns: That wasn't Gen Z though.
- 20:39That was, that was millennials, wasn't it?
- 20:41Ryan: No, that was Gen Z.
- 20:42Jon: It was kind of cuspy.
- 20:44and it was never really that big of a a thing either.
- 20:48It was like four kids did it and they made it like it was happening everywhere.
- 20:52Kearns: a Boomer Gen X thing to
- 20:54Jon: Yeah.
- 20:55Kearns: seem like it's a rampant issue when it's nothing.
- 20:57Jon: Yeah.
- 20:59But I, think that's just how that manifests in our society.
- 21:03It's more of look at how dumb they are
- 21:06Ryan: Yeah.
- 21:07Jon: you know, as in comparison to maybe like feeling threatened by them thinking
- 21:12differently, which we'll get to too at some point in this country too, I'm sure.
- 21:17Kearns: a hundred percent.
- 21:18The only time I think they're dumb is when I try to show them how to do anything
- 21:21on a computer, an actual computer, and I'm like, this is ridiculous.
- 21:24The elderly can't use the computers and the kids can't use the computers, and
- 21:28you have this niche meat in the sandwich that's us that knows how to use bios and
- 21:33knows how like old Linux operating systems work and what it's actually all built on
- 21:38Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 21:39Kearns: yeah, it's wild.
- 21:40It's like, what do you mean it's safe to my C drive?
- 21:41I'm like, oh yeah, you're not on a Chromebook.
- 21:44You're on a laptop right now.
- 21:45Time to get with the program.
- 21:46Here's how you do it.
- 21:48then they, they don't get it at all.
- 21:49It's like, is it in the cloud?
- 21:51You're in the cloud.
- 21:52Ryan: We're like the middle children or the
- 21:54Kearns: Yeah.
- 21:55It's brutal.
- 21:58Jon: You guys are I'm like right on the edge of that generation that
- 22:02doesn't understand them either.
- 22:04Kearns: Yeah.
- 22:05Ryan: get a
- 22:05Jon: Yeah.
- 22:05Like I'm self-taught.
- 22:07Kearns: Yeah.
- 22:07Jon: Like
- 22:08Kearns: go.
- 22:08Jon: I went to school with one computer in a classroom and
- 22:11it was like a, reward thing.
- 22:13You okay?
- 22:14You guys have had a good day.
- 22:15Some of you can go play Oregon Trail.
- 22:18Kearns: crunchers
- 22:19Jon: Yeah.
- 22:20Kearns: whipped out the nine inch floppy,
- 22:22Ryan: yep.
- 22:23Kearns: megabyte floppy
- 22:24Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 22:25Yeah,
- 22:26Ryan: I
- 22:26Jon: yeah,
- 22:26Ryan: discs.
- 22:28Kearns: I'm good.
- 22:29I ate a stack
- 22:30Jon: yeah.
- 22:31Kearns: sharpie all
- 22:32Jon: I'll need those back.
- 22:33Kearns: and then the zip drives came out and that was like wild,
- 22:38Jon: Yeah, I don't need
- 22:38Kearns: on his zip drive.
- 22:40Jon: those.
- 22:41I have all a ton of
- 22:42Ryan: a whole bunch.
- 22:43Or I had a whole bunch and stuff.
- 22:47Kearns: John, what are you gonna do?
- 22:48Who are you gonna be queef them to?
- 22:51Like who's getting all
- 22:53Jon: one of you guys.
- 22:55Ryan: Oh,
- 22:56Jon: One of you guys.
- 22:56Kearns: are you gonna go through as the archives of all of his zip drives?
- 22:59Jon: As, long as you promise not to turn them over to, the authorities,
- 23:03I'll forward 'em to you guys.
- 23:04Ryan: do that.
- 23:05I just can imagine.
- 23:06It's like Raiders of the Lost Arc. I get the staff and the light
- 23:09Kearns: Yeah, exactly.
- 23:11Ryan: Duh.
- 23:13Jon: Yeah.
- 23:13No, not on the zip drives.
- 23:15Kearns: It's funny, I still am rocking just the regular one terabyte drive that's
- 23:19connected to the old router here, and I upload all our content saves on there
- 23:24and things like that for every episode.
- 23:25I'm, not even at not even close to halfway on it yet, and I
- 23:31was like, thinking about it.
- 23:32I'm like, we do this for a long time.
- 23:33We're gonna need to get a bigger drive.
- 23:36And that's a terabyte.
- 23:37Ryan: We are gonna have to be in syndication by then.
- 23:40Kearns: Yeah.
- 23:41We'll
- 23:41Jon: That's indication
- 23:42Ryan: our, we'll have our Roku channel.
- 23:44Kearns: Yes, sir. Yes sir.
- 23:47Ryan: episodes.
- 23:49Jon: hours of are mugs.
- 23:51Kearns: Oh God, please.
- 23:52No.
- 23:53Ryan: What,
- 23:54Kearns: What?
- 23:55Oh, can you imagine?
- 23:55The early stuff is very tough.
- 23:57I listen to it sometimes.
- 23:59I'm like, we've evolved quite a bit since then.
- 24:01Ryan: yes, we have, we've gotten into our niche and I'm happy about that.
- 24:05Kearns: Shout out to Roanoke Gaming.
- 24:06I just watched his episode from two years ago on dead snow and he, it's, it was an
- 24:12entertaining watch and I was thinking of our episode, so I re-listened to it and
- 24:15watched the animation a little bit and stuff and I was like, wow, really good.
- 24:20Ryan: We, we turned real eventually.
- 24:23Kearns: Yeah,
- 24:23Jon: Yeah,
- 24:24Kearns: back then.
- 24:25We were less, you know, congenial
- 24:28Ryan: My favorite one's still Fright Night.
- 24:29That's,
- 24:30Kearns: right now.
- 24:30It was good.
- 24:32Jon: I don't know.
- 24:33I don't know if I have a favorite.
- 24:34I love them all.
- 24:35Ryan: Aw.
- 24:36Kearns: I can't wait
- 24:36Jon: all,
- 24:38Ryan: Yeah.
- 24:40Now,
- 24:40Kearns: I think that's a live watch, right?
- 24:41That's gotta be something like that special.
- 24:44Jon: I, we have to work that in at some point.
- 24:47Get, get our Patreon up.
- 24:48Patreon up and running, and put some live stuff on there.
- 24:52Put some other stuff up there.
- 24:55The Ryan dictionary.
- 24:57Kearns: Yeah.
- 24:58Ryan Dictionary is key.
- 25:00I hope you've been logging everything.
- 25:01'cause I, I fall off.
- 25:03Jon: Oh no, I'm, I'm a hundred percent gonna have to re-listen
- 25:06to everything we've ever recorded.
- 25:08Kearns: God.
- 25:08Ryan: That'll be on Patreon too.
- 25:10Re-listening, like, what did we
- 25:12Kearns: Yeah.
- 25:12Ryan: here?
- 25:12Jesus.
- 25:14But you know what's not gonna be on Patreon?
- 25:16US watching Puppet Master, we're not gonna have people pay for that.
- 25:20Kearns: I mean, why not?
- 25:22Why not?
- 25:22Ryan: Well, have
- 25:23Kearns: But
- 25:24Ryan: Puppet Master
- 25:25Kearns: yes, I have back in the HBO when HBO was on the home box.
- 25:30Office box.
- 25:32Jon: Have you, have you seen the Critters movies?
- 25:34We're gonna live, watch those for money.
- 25:36Ryan: Yes.
- 25:37Kearns: True.
- 25:37Jon: we can do puppet, master live watch for money.
- 25:41Ryan: Alright.
- 25:42Kearns: So for Battle Royale, let's get back to brass tacks,
- 25:45Jon: Yeah.
- 25:46Kearns: Royale.
- 25:47You've got your quintessential dystopian society.
- 25:51they're sacrificing the, next generation for the good of
- 25:54those who are already around.
- 25:55It's very metaphorical.
- 25:56It's very true.
- 25:58Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 25:58Kearns: apropo for what's happening right now in the world, which is awful.
- 26:01and then they have like five niche characters.
- 26:04We'll kind of go over real quick, five important ones.
- 26:06Really.
- 26:07You have the sensei, the guy who's in charge of their demise,
- 26:11Ryan: yep,
- 26:11Kearns: the architect of it, the president snow, if you'll catano.
- 26:15Ryan: Ano?
- 26:16Kearns: have the lead male and lead female shinji.
- 26:22Oh, not a hard,
- 26:23Ryan: Yep.
- 26:23Jon: Nana, Hara and Noriko, whose name changes to something else
- 26:28through the course of it too.
- 26:30Ryan: Naka.
- 26:30Jon: think they like switched.
- 26:31Yeah, I think they switched between last name and first name with her throughout.
- 26:35Ryan: Yes.
- 26:37Kearns: great.
- 26:37So one
- 26:38Jon: Does she get
- 26:39Kearns: in Japanese is they usually use your last name as your
- 26:42first name in shows and stuff.
- 26:44I don't know if it's like that in the culture.
- 26:46Jon: I think it is.
- 26:47I think, the way we are presented names is backwards to how they actually are,
- 26:54but I'm all, I know some things have also changed how they do that, and
- 26:58I'm not sure where that started.
- 27:00So I'm not always sure when I watch something Japanese, whether it was
- 27:06before or after the time that we went through and corrected that.
- 27:10Kearns: Got you.
- 27:10I think it's the way they say them.
- 27:12Like if you introduce yourself, you'd be like, well, I don't want to dox us.
- 27:15I'd be like, Smith John, like that.
- 27:19Jon: Yeah,
- 27:20Kearns: them
- 27:20Jon: because it's the, family name above the self.
- 27:24Kearns: is cool.
- 27:26I like that.
- 27:28that's neat.
- 27:29Jon: Yeah.
- 27:30Kearns: our big bads, we have, well we have, we have our badass, good guy
- 27:34Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 27:35Kearns: name is something
- 27:37Jon: Ada.
- 27:37Kearns: Ada, and then we have our badass bad guy
- 27:40Ryan: Yep.
- 27:40Um,
- 27:41Jon: Who is?
- 27:42Who is young Japanese Christopher Walken.
- 27:45Kearns: yeah, basically he's pretty cool.
- 27:47Ryan: reminded
- 27:47Jon: I love that.
- 27:48I love that character.
- 27:50Ryan: me a lot and Kerns will get this, a vicious from Cowboy Depop,
- 27:53especially when he was on and he grabs a samurai sword and he strikes down.
- 27:58I was like,
- 27:59Kearns: Yeah,
- 28:00Ryan: some vicious vibes.
- 28:01And John, I know you've never seen Cowboy beep up, but vicious is very, the anime
- 28:06version's very in your face calculating.
- 28:08And
- 28:09Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 28:09Ryan: a lot of him, um, the other
- 28:11Kearns: those last two episodes.
- 28:13Or it wouldn't be nearly as good without Vicious,
- 28:16Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 28:16Kearns: the last two episodes, the stakes are so high.
- 28:19Everybody was, everybody adores Spike Spikes the show.
- 28:23I mean, all the characters are amazing.
- 28:24Ed
- 28:25Jon: Mm.
- 28:26Kearns: A, all of them.
- 28:26But like Spike is the guy.
- 28:29So in the last two episodes, if it wasn't vicious, that's your auth to your cloud.
- 28:34Basically it's your Unclimbable Mountain.
- 28:36And even though Spike is so good, vicious is vicious.
- 28:39So it's like, it's cool.
- 28:41John, I really recommend that you bite the bullet on this Cowboy
- 28:44Bebo's A, it's a short run.
- 28:46I think it's only like 24 episodes.
- 28:48Ryan: And
- 28:48Kearns: Yeah, you gotta do it.
- 28:49Ryan: and then if you find the movie, the movie's right before
- 28:52episode 23 and it sets it up nicely.
- 28:55Kearns: It's not
- 28:55Jon: Oh man.
- 28:57Kearns: not
- 28:57Jon: movies in the middle of the show.
- 28:59Kearns: You just watch.
- 29:00You just watch the series.
- 29:01Ryan: I'm just
- 29:02Kearns: Yeah.
- 29:02Ryan: the movie.
- 29:02'cause the series is, it's so you're gonna wanna watch the
- 29:05movie after you see the series.
- 29:06Kearns: 20 minutes an episode.
- 29:07Let's do the math on this.
- 29:08How much time investment is it?
- 29:09But it's really, it's a cultural phenomenon.
- 29:12It's more than just the sum of its parts.
- 29:15Jon: 20 minutes an episode.
- 29:17Ryan: a Patreon life?
- 29:18Watch of Cowboy.
- 29:19Be Bob.
- 29:21Kearns: Oh, oh
- 29:23Jon: Today.
- 29:23on our Patreon bonus episode, we're gonna torture John with more anime.
- 29:29Kearns: Hmm.
- 29:29Ryan: get hooked up after the red
- 29:31Kearns: They get clicks, baby.
- 29:33They get clicks.
- 29:34That's half the
- 29:35Jon: They do.
- 29:36Kearns: doing live
- 29:36Jon: They do.
- 29:37So
- 29:38Kearns: current anime and
- 29:39Jon: back to Battle Royale.
- 29:40Back to Battle Royale.
- 29:42Kearns: There you go.
- 29:43Jon: Um, so our friend Christopher Walken and Kata, it's important to sort of put
- 29:49out, are not students in this class.
- 29:53They're what Katano calls transfer students, but they're basically
- 29:58previous winners come back for their own specific reasons.
- 30:03Kearns: Which is pretty cool.
- 30:04And that's not a premise that's foreign to Suzanne Collins' story that she stole.
- 30:10Ryan: Yep.
- 30:10Jon: Yeah.
- 30:10And then our last really main character, I think is Mitsuko and
- 30:16her trauma, and then victimizing.
- 30:22Kearns: Yeah, she's a psycho.
- 30:23Ryan: Yes she
- 30:24Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 30:26Mm-hmm.
- 30:26Ryan: it so well.
- 30:27her facial expressions.
- 30:29I mean, again, English dub, so don't know what like real
- 30:32lines are and what they changed.
- 30:34But you can see on her facial reactions, how she's calm one
- 30:38minute and then she just snaps.
- 30:40Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 30:41Ryan: with the girl, with the taser, I was like,
- 30:43Jon: Yeah.
- 30:44Ryan: Like,
- 30:47Jon: Yeah.
- 30:47she's very, sort of reassuring just long enough to get close enough.
- 30:52Ryan: yes.
- 30:53I mean, those.
- 30:55Jon: And,
- 30:55Ryan: Guys later on the movie too.
- 30:57That was, that was
- 30:59Jon: mm-hmm.
- 31:00Yeah.
- 31:01Ryan: It's quick.
- 31:02Jon: Yeah.
- 31:02Ryan: cut to the aftermath, but
- 31:06Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 31:06Ryan: didn't have a good time.
- 31:09Jon: Yep.
- 31:11So we're gonna tell people what we think, but let's give some idea of
- 31:15what some other people think too.
- 31:17Kearns: it.
- 31:17Let's hit one.
- 31:18Ryan: nervous.
- 31:19Jon: Yeah.
- 31:19Here's a five star for Battle Royal.
- 31:23It was a really memorable story to the plot line and the
- 31:27characters throughout the movie.
- 31:29The Kills show how easily a friendship could be broken in a matter of
- 31:33seconds to days plus at, at the end.
- 31:37It gave me a beautiful Clouser, which I'm assuming is closer
- 31:41and make me so emotional.
- 31:43I definitely recommend this masterpiece and I, I mean that's,
- 31:47that's pretty close to how I feel about this movie, like they do.
- 31:51One of the things that I really like how they do is how.
- 31:55They fray these existing relationships on the smallest things.
- 32:00Sometimes
- 32:01Kearns: Yeah.
- 32:01Jon: like the girls in, the lighthouse have set up their own little safe
- 32:05space and then you get rescued Nana Hara and somebody and one of them
- 32:11having witnessed something that wasn't what she saw and just how it devolves
- 32:18into murder and paranoia and chaos.
- 32:22Ryan: movie.
- 32:23In my opinion,
- 32:24Jon: I love, that's a really good scene.
- 32:27I love that scene with the, the poison and then
- 32:30Kearns: It catches you off guard too
- 32:31Ryan: yes.
- 32:32Jon: mm-hmm.
- 32:33Mm-hmm.
- 32:35And it like that scene and the scene when there all this kids
- 32:41are in the school building and.
- 32:43They fire the gun at them to sort of calm them down.
- 32:46Just the way those two scenes are choreographed, it's almost like watching
- 32:51like a West Side story type musical,
- 32:56which I, really kind of like, even though somehow I don't like musicals.
- 33:00I like the choreography of that.
- 33:02Kearns: Cool.
- 33:03Ryan: see.
- 33:03I can see John watching this and be like, God, they're gonna
- 33:06start singing and dancing.
- 33:07Now.
- 33:08It's the wrong
- 33:09Jon: Yeah.
- 33:10Yeah.
- 33:11Oh, I, yeah.
- 33:13No, don't get me started on musicals.
- 33:14This is gonna be a three hour episode.
- 33:16Um, so here's one stars for, Battle Royale, were hard to
- 33:22come by, especially on Google.
- 33:24'cause there's only, there's two.
- 33:25But one of them is clearly not for battle.
- 33:28Battle Royal.
- 33:29Ryan: it for
- 33:29Kearns: cool.
- 33:30Jon: Wait.
- 33:30It's like, no, it, I don't even know what it's for.
- 33:33It's just somebody ranting about something.
- 33:35Ryan: If they needed to
- 33:36Kearns: On Google.
- 33:38Jon: It's like three lines and it's like, it, like you start reading and it's like,
- 33:42oh, this is, this is gonna be great.
- 33:43Wait, they're not talking about this movie.
- 33:45I don't know what you're talking about, but it's not Battle
- 33:48Royal, but this person is.
- 33:51One star least enjoyable watch I've had in my life.
- 33:56How is showing a character's backstory, moments before having them killed,
- 34:00supposed to make the audience invested Aside from the ridiculous plot holes,
- 34:06laughably, forced and cheesy love stories.
- 34:10None of the characters seem to have any development during the two hours.
- 34:14If the premise were more plausible, maybe it would be worth sitting through.
- 34:19Otherwise, it's a complete waste of time.
- 34:23Ryan: I don't like that reviewer.
- 34:25Nope.
- 34:26Kearns: Disagree.
- 34:27Jon: I went, looking to see if that person reviewed Hunger Games.
- 34:30They did not.
- 34:31Ryan: would've
- 34:31Kearns: that would've been cool.
- 34:32Ryan: this was a great movie.
- 34:34Yeah.
- 34:34It's the same
- 34:35Kearns: same.
- 34:36Jon: Yeah,
- 34:37Ryan: is it?
- 34:38Kearns: Alright.
- 34:39Jon: mean,
- 34:40Kearns: faster than Norm it would
- 34:41Jon: mm-hmm.
- 34:42Kearns: like today, things move faster than they did, but it moved
- 34:44faster than things from the time.
- 34:46For sure.
- 34:46Jon: Yeah.
- 34:47Yeah.
- 34:48Like there are va like if you're going into this and you want them to
- 34:52develop the characters, you're talking, there's 42 students plus the teacher.
- 35:00If you want the full development of all of that, you're, you're not watching a movie.
- 35:06You're watching seven or eight seasons of a TV show at that point.
- 35:10Kearns: Yeah, that would be a series.
- 35:12Yeah, something like that.
- 35:13Jon: You ha.
- 35:14You have to choose which characters you want to invest the backstory
- 35:19time into, and I think they do a pretty good job of that.
- 35:22You have Nana Hara and his, Michael Hutchins esque dad.
- 35:28His hanging with his pants down.
- 35:33Kearns: his self ending,
- 35:35Ryan: You,
- 35:35Kearns: we'll call it.
- 35:36Ryan: I was questioning when you texted me that.
- 35:38I was like, what are you talking about?
- 35:39And they did the flashback and I was like, oh,
- 35:44this is
- 35:45Kearns: Yeah.
- 35:45Ryan: messed up.
- 35:46Because I was like, oh man, this guy himself and he lost his
- 35:49pants during the whole thing.
- 35:52Jon: He, Michael Hutchins.
- 35:53Kearns: he, Michael Hutchins
- 35:54Jon: He Michael Hutchins.
- 35:58Google, Michael Hutchins or Inex in Excess, which is spelled INXS.
- 36:03You'll understand.
- 36:04Kearns: from Kung fu?
- 36:06Ryan: Yeah,
- 36:07Jon: yeah, him
- 36:07Ryan: yeah.
- 36:08Kearns: What's his name?
- 36:10Ryan: That's not
- 36:10Kearns: Yeah, bill.
- 36:12That was a big hit.
- 36:14David Carradine.
- 36:16Yeah, David Carradine.
- 36:18That was a big surprise.
- 36:19Jon: one.
- 36:20Kearns: Did not expect that to come out.
- 36:22Ryan: That was an accident.
- 36:24Kearns: Yeah.
- 36:26Jon: I think Michael Hutchins was too.
- 36:27I think that was,
- 36:29Kearns: Well, I mean, you're playing a little close to the line with that habit.
- 36:32Ryan: should have done.
- 36:33They should have just done Richard gear.
- 36:35That's it.
- 36:37Jon: There.
- 36:39Allegedly,
- 36:41Kearns: Yeah.
- 36:42Not going,
- 36:42Jon: allegedly,
- 36:43Kearns: giving that guy something to do.
- 36:45Jon: Allegedly.
- 36:47Kearns: All right.
- 36:48So, um, we're big, we're big fans of this movie.
- 36:51We're gonna kind of roll through from the mid tier towards the end.
- 36:54Now, guys, the, we're big fans of this movie.
- 36:56Um, we don't like that.
- 36:57It didn't get as much notoriety as, as it could have.
- 37:00It got more after Suzanne Collins stole it, to be honest with you.
- 37:03Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 37:04Yeah, it
- 37:05Kearns: I won't even say allegedly for that.
- 37:06That's just
- 37:08Jon: it's,
- 37:08Kearns: not cool.
- 37:09Jon: out stolen.
- 37:10Kearns: it's not cool.
- 37:12Jon: I have the most minor issue with this movie.
- 37:16Kearns: Oh, yeah, this is a cool one.
- 37:19Jon: It falls.
- 37:19It's definitely an editing thing,
- 37:22Ryan: Yes.
- 37:22Jon: one thing they do after each kid is eliminated.
- 37:27They post the number that that's left.
- 37:29So it'll go like the first two go, it's down to 40 and then it's 37 or whatever.
- 37:35But at one point it goes from 32 to 16, then it goes back up after the
- 37:42next couple to like 28 or something.
- 37:45Ryan: Yep.
- 37:45Jon: like.
- 37:46It's clearly like an editing mistake and it's not something, I don't
- 37:51even know how many people notice it.
- 37:53I could, I don't know how many times I watched it before I noticed
- 37:56it, but eventually I started really paying attention to that.
- 38:00When I watched, I was like, oh my God.
- 38:02Like if there's a split second where that almost takes me completely out.
- 38:08Kearns: Which is wild too.
- 38:09'cause you asked if I noticed it and I was like, dude, I was just barely
- 38:12hanging on trying to watch the, I watched it in two parts, first half and
- 38:15second half and the first night I was like struggling to stay in tune to it.
- 38:19That was a, we have long days, we'll just put it that way listeners.
- 38:22Ryan: we do.
- 38:22Kearns: They're not long by hours, but it's like the hyperbolic time chamber.
- 38:25It, it's a longer than it is.
- 38:28We put out a lot of energy in that time and boy, howdy was, I like trying.
- 38:34Ryan: it's not a bad mistake.
- 38:36Definitely unnoticeable.
- 38:37It's not like watching like Goodfellas where you're like, oh
- 38:40God, this is like, and great movie, but his cuts in that are insane.
- 38:46Jon: But it's the kind of thing if you watch a movie as
- 38:49many times as I've seen Battle
- 38:50Ryan: Yeah.
- 38:51Jon: you start to notice these little
- 38:54Ryan: Yep,
- 38:55Jon: and you, you know, you, now you, oh, really?
- 38:58Why?
- 38:59Why are the numbers wrong?
- 39:02But you know why the numbers are wrong, because they
- 39:04edited that part and forgot to
- 39:06Ryan: yep.
- 39:07They had, they had to do a quick fix and they were like,
- 39:09let me just put this C in here.
- 39:11No one's gonna notice.
- 39:12just jumping numbers.
- 39:15Jon: No one's gonna notice, including the person editing it.
- 39:18Like that's how, minuscule this, issue actually is.
- 39:23Ryan: I think they were still cutting it too.
- 39:24I think at that time, 19 2000, 2001, they weren't using digital.
- 39:29I think they were still cutting the film together, so I.
- 39:32Jon: Probably.
- 39:33Ryan: That's definitely, oh, it, it looks the same the light.
- 39:37All
- 39:37Kearns: Yeah.
- 39:38Jon: yeah.
- 39:38I mean it like it with the way the eliminations in this movie are done,
- 39:44they don't, there's no reason except for like the final three or four
- 39:50that they have to be in that order.
- 39:52Ryan: Yeah,
- 39:53Jon: You can, just take, you know, the lighthouse scene and pop that at the
- 39:58beginning and it doesn't matter as long as you're not putting the count on it.
- 40:03Ryan: true.
- 40:04Kearns: Fair.
- 40:05mean it's, that's a fair point.
- 40:06And a minor, minor glitch.
- 40:08Um, and I'd be curious to see if that pops up when we watch or if we
- 40:12ever do watch the subtitled version.
- 40:15If they messed, they could have just messed up the dub version too.
- 40:18Jon: No, because I watched the subtitle.
- 40:20Kearns: Oh, okay.
- 40:20Got it.
- 40:21Jon: I, uh, yeah, I will almost exclusively watch subtitles
- 40:25except it, uh, for Godzilla movies
- 40:28Kearns: Of culture.
- 40:28Jon: has the,
- 40:29Kearns: Yeah.
- 40:29Jon: has the nostalgia.
- 40:31Kearns: Yeah, the mouth moving 20 minutes after they're done speaking.
- 40:34That's good stuff.
- 40:36Good stuff.
- 40:36we're gonna skip over me talking about when my cousin brought back all the
- 40:39Godzilla movies for the 40th time on this.
- 40:41But yeah, I love the old Godzilla VHS tapes.
- 40:45Jon: you wanna spend a, a few bucks.
- 40:47There is a Criterion Godzilla set that, oh my gosh.
- 40:52Kearns: That would be kind of neat.
- 40:54Jon: book size,
- 40:54Ryan: all of them.
- 40:55Jon: like big book.
- 40:56so there's all a set with like, like it's the first, like 15, 16 of them
- 41:04comes in this like an oversized book with like pages, like it's just so
- 41:10Kearns: You know what's interesting about batter Royale, by the way,
- 41:12it looks like the book is a manga.
- 41:15It doesn't necessarily, or maybe they made a manga from an actual novel.
- 41:18Jon: they made a manga from
- 41:21Kearns: Okay,
- 41:21Jon: 'cause I believe the novel is first.
- 41:25I read the novel, I own it.
- 41:26I'm not sure I could find it if I had to, but I could have definitely read it.
- 41:31Ryan: that actually
- 41:32Kearns: cool man.
- 41:33Ryan: 'cause I was gonna ask you if you've read it.
- 41:35Now, here's my second question for it is, was there any differences from the book?
- 41:39Similarities?
- 41:40Does it follow or,
- 41:42Jon: I mean there's definitely some noticeable differences.
- 41:46I don't remember them all at this point, 'cause I probably
- 41:48read the book seven, eight
- 41:49Ryan: okay.
- 41:50Jon: now.
- 41:51But yeah, I mean it's, the book is definitely a different experience and
- 41:55I can dig it out and lend it to you.
- 41:57It's definitely worth it.
- 41:58And while we're, just to go back to wonderful additions of stuff, there's a
- 42:03beautiful region B battle royale box set
- 42:07Kearns: Oh yeah.
- 42:08Jon: has two different cuts of battle royale.
- 42:11Two different cuts of the sequel.
- 42:13A book, like it's in this beautiful box.
- 42:17Like
- 42:19Kearns: That's cool.
- 42:19Ryan: Is the sequel worth it though?
- 42:22Kearns: Yeah.
- 42:24Jon: I don't like, listen, it might, be for some people I did not like the sequel.
- 42:29It doesn't have a lot of the feel of the original.
- 42:32Ryan: director
- 42:33Kearns: to live up to.
- 42:34Yeah.
- 42:35Ryan: The director died while filming it from cancer.
- 42:37Kearns: That sucks.
- 42:39Jon: And it's, just a, different experience.
- 42:41Like he's doing something different.
- 42:43He's not, like, oh, people like game element of this with, and
- 42:48I'm just gonna do that again.
- 42:50He's not doing that.
- 42:51He's, he's taking characters and moving them forward and it's a fun
- 42:56direction to take those characters in, but it just didn't work for
- 42:59Ryan: Do you think
- 43:00Kearns: Hmm.
- 43:01Ryan: didn't die of cancer, you think it would've been a different film?
- 43:04Because it, it seems like he's got a different perspective in the first
- 43:08one that maybe another director taking over, uh, Allah Superman.
- 43:12Two.
- 43:14Jon: Maybe, but I don't, think so.
- 43:16I think this was the direction he wanted to go
- 43:18Ryan: Okay.
- 43:18Jon: it's more, it's now NHA and and Rebellion, you know, the
- 43:25kids are now fighting, the adults and the government and it, like,
- 43:30Ryan: Okay.
- 43:32Jon: it's, not for me.
- 43:35Like I'm sure there are people who like it.
- 43:37I'm sure it's got, it's um, it can't be as well received as battle Royale, but.
- 43:42Kearns: when you go the anarchy route, like it sounds like two went, it's,
- 43:45that's a different message than what the first movie's putting out there.
- 43:48The first movie's putting out there is an indictment of an older generation
- 43:52Ryan: Yes.
- 43:53Kearns: and what they're doing when they're supposed to be planting trees
- 43:56for the younger generation to shade in.
- 43:58So.
- 43:59Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 44:00And you know, if you want to go with that is more of the conviction
- 44:04and sentencing of the adults.
- 44:07Kearns: Uh, a little French Revolution.
- 44:09Action.
- 44:10Little la
- 44:10Jon: Yeah, kind
- 44:11Kearns: ine.
- 44:11Yeah.
- 44:12Cool.
- 44:13Cool.
- 44:13Deal.
- 44:14Jon: yeah.
- 44:15Kearns: So, how do we feel about how this one ended?
- 44:16Oops, sorry.
- 44:18Jon: Well, I can give you a couple one stars that, I'll give you some
- 44:21idea of that they're both really short 'cause I had to work hard for ones.
- 44:26one Star Dubs are terrible, which I think we agree
- 44:30Kearns: Mm-hmm.
- 44:30Jon: aren't
- 44:30Ryan: Yeah,
- 44:31Jon: Dubs aren't great.
- 44:32Kearns: Dubs aren't great, right?
- 44:33Jon: I know people, I know people don't like to read movies, but read the
- 44:39Ryan: healthy.
- 44:39Jon: You get a better sense of what
- 44:40Kearns: I read all of Sweet Home, had no problem.
- 44:44Jon: it gives you a better picture of what you're watching.
- 44:47Kearns: I have more trouble reading live action than I do anime, but,
- 44:51but it's still not a big issue.
- 44:53But I also read fast.
- 44:54I'm a reader.
- 44:56Jon: Yeah, dubs are terrible and it has none of the good themes of the original
- 45:01book and does it a massive injustice,
- 45:05Kearns: Ooh.
- 45:06Yeah.
- 45:06I don't know about all that.
- 45:07Jon: it, I don't think it did an injustice to the book.
- 45:09it's not the same experience, but, and then there's
- 45:13Kearns: Yeah,
- 45:13Jon: star, which gets into what I fear is going to happen
- 45:17long term with battle rail.
- 45:20one star, battle Royale was difficult for me to watch, considering
- 45:24the gore and the violence.
- 45:26I mean, there's not that much gore.
- 45:27It's violent, for
- 45:28Kearns: it's campy Gore
- 45:30Ryan: gore.
- 45:31Kearns: there's
- 45:31Ryan: Yep.
- 45:31Kearns: packs that explode and stuff.
- 45:34It's pretty funny.
- 45:35The sensei stands up with like 27 bullet holes in him to catch a cell phone call.
- 45:39Jon: Yeah.
- 45:40Ryan: I am not coming home.
- 45:42Kearns: Yeah.
- 45:43It's so dumb.
- 45:44Jon: It sh it showed the true instincts of humans when the choice becomes kill or
- 45:50be killed in a way, it reminded me of the very popular Hunger Games and Squid Games.
- 45:58No squid Games in the Hunger Games reminded you of Battle
- 46:01Ryan: I feel like
- 46:01Kearns: Yeah.
- 46:02Fair.
- 46:02Ryan: though.
- 46:04Jon: It is,
- 46:05Ryan: Are different.
- 46:05Jon: can see, I can see how you get to them being similar though.
- 46:09Ryan: Yes.
- 46:09Jon: it's a game.
- 46:11it's a game with fatal consequences for not playing it well or winning.
- 46:18I,
- 46:18Kearns: And Squid Game is more unique.
- 46:20It is not a direct copy.
- 46:22Like if Squid Games was you wake up and you were, you were
- 46:25chosen, you didn't choose, and all those things, then that's an,
- 46:28Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 46:28Kearns: that's getting closer.
- 46:29Jon: But like, like if you told me the people who created squid games
- 46:33were influenced by battle morale, I wouldn't, it wouldn't surprise me in the
- 46:36Kearns: And squid games is going after wealthy elites and the poor.
- 46:39That's more of a class thing than a generation thing too.
- 46:43Jon: Yeah.
- 46:44It.
- 46:46It was very violent for me and I did not like seeing so many kids involved.
- 46:50It was very extreme with a lot of blood and harsh violence.
- 46:54I would not recommend this move to watch.
- 46:58the movie did not spend time having the audience get to
- 47:01know the characters before the
- 47:03Kearns: Love that John reads the typos to like extra, dig it in there.
- 47:07Ryan: The move,
- 47:08Jon: Uh,
- 47:08Kearns: One stars this move.
- 47:10Ryan: it's the move.
- 47:10Kearns: Uh, I mean, yeah, but you watch the wrong movie, lad.
- 47:15That's, that's all that is.
- 47:17Jon: Yeah, I, if
- 47:20I, it's an, this movie should not surprise anybody for what it is.
- 47:24It's, you know, there, there is, uh, there, there are definitely the elements
- 47:29of that, that stylized Japanese violence.
- 47:32Ryan: Yeah.
- 47:34Jon: if you're watching a Japanese movie like that, you
- 47:37kind of should know to expect it.
- 47:39Ryan: Agreed.
- 47:40Jon: That's what's coming.
- 47:42That's what you know.
- 47:43Ryan: Yeah,
- 47:43Kearns: Yeah.
- 47:44Jon: And I mean, if, if you want gore, you didn't, you're not watching battle morale.
- 47:50Like battle morale is not gore.
- 47:53Ryan: feel like the only thing that maybe was as gory was the
- 47:57arrow scene in the beginning, and that's not even that bad, know?
- 48:01Jon: And there, there's a bit in the lighthouse,
- 48:05Kearns: Yeah.
- 48:05Jon: you know, with poisoning, but it's not.
- 48:10I, it's not, it's like I've never seen the Hunger Games movies, but
- 48:15I can't imagine it's more gory
- 48:17Kearns: Coolest Goriest.
- 48:19Most horror part.
- 48:21Most hoist, I'll get my word in your dictionary, Ryan, is that, is that
- 48:25when he throws the head with the grenade in it, in his mouth inside
- 48:28of the house to flush him out?
- 48:29That part was cool as heck.
- 48:31Ryan: was cool.
- 48:31Kearns: I was like,
- 48:31Jon: That.
- 48:33Ryan: That was unexpected.
- 48:34Jon: so awesome.
- 48:35He's just, there because he enjoyed the
- 48:38Ryan: Yep.
- 48:38Jon: first time.
- 48:39Kearns: yeah, he's the devil.
- 48:40Jon: mean, like, like kata, you, go into it expecting, okay.
- 48:45They're both transfer students.
- 48:47They're both probably not gonna be good people.
- 48:50They're both like just here because they had fun and they wanted to do it again.
- 48:55But Kata is not that he, you expect him to be, but he's more sensitive.
- 49:00He, you know, he, I think this is one of the things that even
- 49:03subtitle doesn't translate.
- 49:05He's looking for the meaning his girlfriend's last smile.
- 49:11Ryan: Yes.
- 49:12Kearns: Which is interesting.
- 49:13Ryan: Yeah,
- 49:14Jon: I
- 49:14Kearns: Yeah.
- 49:14Ryan: there's a motion and it, it shows in it.
- 49:18It shows,
- 49:18Jon: think that's, probably a concept that either didn't translate well
- 49:23or is like uniquely Ja Japanese, but you know, he, it shows him in a
- 49:31different light from the other guy who's just there to take people out.
- 49:36Kearns: Yeah, it's his whole deal.
- 49:39All right,
- 49:39Ryan: Yeah.
- 49:40Kearns: so we get to the end, we, find the hackers.
- 49:44So we do a little good stuff here.
- 49:45The hackers hack the system.
- 49:47They take out the government guards, big configuration.
- 49:52There's that big showdown with the big batty.
- 49:54They, they trio of good guys really is what they are.
- 49:57Ryan: Yeah.
- 49:58Kearns: Takes them out or manages to kill him, but at a great cost to
- 50:02our other, other previous winner.
- 50:04but the two, the two other two just basically rode through the whole
- 50:07thing on getting lucky and not hurting anybody, which is sort of interesting.
- 50:12Ryan: Oh
- 50:12Kearns: pacifists.
- 50:14Jon: it's, it's an interesting strategy, but I bet it's a pretty
- 50:18term would be a pretty successful
- 50:20Kearns: I'm sure it's better than hunting.
- 50:21Jon: of like, you sort of stay under the radar for as long as you can
- 50:26and then strategically eliminate people at the end if you have
- 50:30Kearns: Yep.
- 50:31No, it's common in battle royale games, camping, the exit.
- 50:35Jon: I think
- 50:35Ryan: Camping.
- 50:36Jon: probably kind of common in most of those reality shows, too.
- 50:39Like the survivor, people make alliances, but you don't get the,
- 50:44I don't know if you necessarily get everybody out for blood every time
- 50:48Kearns: Right.
- 50:48Ryan: Yeah.
- 50:50Kearns: And those characters, make their way to the sensei who seems to
- 50:54want to die when he shoots at them with a water gun or pretends to.
- 50:57And then they, the, our pacifist does shoot him a lot.
- 51:01Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 51:01Kearns: he takes a few and then he takes that phone call,
- 51:04says he is not coming home.
- 51:05They did some character building with him.
- 51:06He talks to his wife or girlfriend or daughter.
- 51:09Ryan: Daughter.
- 51:09Jon: think it's his daughter.
- 51:11Kearns: It seems so She's really mean to him.
- 51:13Jon: yeah, they, you get the impression that there's not a lot of people
- 51:18in his life who like him very much.
- 51:21Kearns: And then he sort of seems to want to check out at the end anyway.
- 51:24That's why he did it that way.
- 51:25And then when they're on the boat,
- 51:28Jon: he also, has kind of an obsession with noco.
- 51:31Kearns: yeah.
- 51:32Ryan: I feel like it's.
- 51:33Jon: maybe not
- 51:34Kearns: Not great.
- 51:35Jon: above
- 51:36Ryan: I thought it
- 51:36Kearns: Yeah,
- 51:37Ryan: daughter.
- 51:38'cause he doesn't have a good relationship with
- 51:40Kearns: it's tricky because Japanese men are known for
- 51:43coveting that age group of girl.
- 51:45Jon: yeah.
- 51:46Ryan: yeah.
- 51:46Kearns: Um,
- 51:47Jon: And he like, he like.
- 51:50Ryan: a hard
- 51:50Jon: I
- 51:51Ryan: wire.
- 51:51Jon: that that's what it is.
- 51:52But like he's got the painting of all the other kids taken out
- 51:56with her as the winner, like foreground, and almost like haloed.
- 52:03Kearns: yeah.
- 52:04Jon: it's an interesting way of, presenting that.
- 52:08Kearns: It leaves it basically up to us, but they put a lot of effort into
- 52:11it for that, which is bizarre too.
- 52:14so he dies.
- 52:15Then we, we we're, we're on the boat and our previous winners enjoying
- 52:19his last smoke and he also parishes.
- 52:22And then it's just our two, our, our first two in our last two.
- 52:25And they're on the land because the government wants 'em.
- 52:29They weren't supposed to both win, which is also a Hunger Games thing.
- 52:33It's so weird.
- 52:34Jon: They weren't, they weren't supposed to win.
- 52:36They weren't supposed to escape.
- 52:37They weren't supposed to off katano.
- 52:40They weren't like everything.
- 52:43They didn't last 30 minutes, they weren't supposed to do.
- 52:46Kearns: Yeah.
- 52:46Ryan: And that makes it
- 52:47Kearns: I wonder if they cut that when they aired it on TV or if they
- 52:51showed them doing all that cool stuff.
- 52:55I doubt it
- 52:55Ryan: I don't think this one was on P 11.
- 52:58Kearns: now.
- 52:59Definitely not pay-per-view.
- 53:00Jon: think had this one.
- 53:02Kearns: But that's it.
- 53:02That's battle royale guys.
- 53:04It's definitely worth a watch if nothing else, to critique for how it was stolen.
- 53:09and it's, it itself is not a novel idea in Japanese, culture or in American.
- 53:15Stephen King, I will always say,
- 53:17Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 53:18Kearns: me, came out with the long Walk, which is sort of the archetypical
- 53:21story in the US of the children being set out as sacrifices kind of thing.
- 53:27Ryan: The children,
- 53:28Kearns: I think that a lot of children stuff early in his career
- 53:30Ryan: ed Cujo
- 53:32Kearns: Yeah.
- 53:33Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 53:33Ryan: lot.
- 53:34Kearns: 'cause gets scary.
- 53:36I guess that's 'cause it's scary.
- 53:37There's always kids in his stuff anyway, but like,
- 53:39Ryan: I mean,
- 53:40Kearns: building into the corn
- 53:41Ryan: oh God,
- 53:43Kearns: that's got children in the title for Pete's sake.
- 53:45Ryan: I, I salem's lot.
- 53:46I mean, idea of a kid who is dead, you know, flush of blood and then
- 53:53it's like the middle of the night and you hear him tapping at your window.
- 53:57It's just since chills down your spine.
- 53:59Especially in
- 54:00Kearns: your childhood chum.
- 54:01They could have made it more visceral if it was like, if they
- 54:03put the dad scene in, right.
- 54:06Ryan: Yeah.
- 54:07Kearns: The book, doesn't he tap at his mom's window too or something like that?
- 54:10Ryan: uh,
- 54:11Kearns: He
- 54:11Ryan: he
- 54:11Kearns: menas them.
- 54:12Ryan: The mom, no, the mom lets, uh, lets him in and he
- 54:15Kearns: Yeah.
- 54:16Ryan: spoiler.
- 54:18Kearns: Yeah.
- 54:18That's the end of that.
- 54:19so that's battle royale everybody.
- 54:21Hope you enjoyed it and let's hear some top fives.
- 54:23Ryan: All right, tonight I am going with Top five in general movies
- 54:28that ripped off other movies.
- 54:31So figured I go down this route.
- 54:34I was gonna do slasher, but there's every, everything's based on Halloween.
- 54:37So I'm going off the chain with this one and I'm starting with number five.
- 54:41The first one lockout starring Guy Pierce, Maggie Grace.
- 54:46It was written by Luke Besson, who wrote Lafe Nikita Leon Professional, and it is
- 54:53a absolute ripoff of escape from New York.
- 54:57Kearns: Nice.
- 54:57Ryan: premise, war criminal.
- 55:00He gets sent to a war torn area at this time, a space
- 55:04station, a prison Sta station.
- 55:08Escaped from New York.
- 55:08Snake Polskin goes to New York.
- 55:10Rescue the president, rescue the president's daughter, very similar.
- 55:14And John Carpenter, uh, sued Luke Besson for this and won the French
- 55:20government said, this is a definite rip off of Escape from New York.
- 55:23So go John Carpenter.
- 55:25Uh, my
- 55:26Kearns: I did not know that.
- 55:27Ryan: Oh,
- 55:29Jon: To be fair, John Carpenter ultimately ripped himself off
- 55:32of that too with Escape from
- 55:33Ryan: oh God.
- 55:34We don't talk about that.
- 55:36surfboard scene.
- 55:39Jon: What you, you can't surf in the middle of
- 55:41Ryan: I, I mean you could, but a whole other story depending on the time of day.
- 55:46But my number four, it's mentioning surfing.
- 55:49Ironically, Fast and the Furious is a hundred percent a rip off of point break.
- 55:58Yeah.
- 55:59Jon: I
- 55:59Ryan: Johnny Uda.
- 56:00Jon: It's, it's, it,
- 56:02Ryan: Brian Walker.
- 56:03Jon: point, it's point break with
- 56:05Ryan: Yeah.
- 56:05It's, I mean, you got a
- 56:06Kearns: And way worse acting.
- 56:09Jon: Yeah.
- 56:11Ryan: Come on.
- 56:11Kearns: They get the star power endpoint break compared to what?
- 56:14What a polished herd Fast and Furious is.
- 56:17Ryan: Oh, you got
- 56:18Kearns: There's nobody who can act and fast and furious.
- 56:20Ryan: Diesel,
- 56:21Jon: Now, I, I
- 56:23Kearns: You're proving my point.
- 56:25I
- 56:25Jon: and the Furious franchise is the rare franchise that gets more fun.
- 56:30The further into
- 56:31Kearns: Yes, because they get worse.
- 56:33Ryan: yeah.
- 56:34Jon: because the last four or five of 'em are just absolutely ridiculous.
- 56:39But they're, they're fun.
- 56:40The first couple are just dull.
- 56:42Kearns: Well, they were serious.
- 56:43They were real like trying to be real car movies and people were out
- 56:47there buying mods for their civics and stuff like crazy after it.
- 56:51Jon: Yeah.
- 56:52Ryan: first two.
- 56:52I, I love the first two.
- 56:54fourth one brings it back to like form the fifth and I I up to the seventh.
- 57:01The eighth one?
- 57:02No, the ninth one in space.
- 57:04No.
- 57:05Jon: Man n no that, see, that's when I, that's when I think
- 57:08that that franchise hits, hits
- 57:10Ryan: Who goes,
- 57:11Jon: it's just, they just accept that this whole franchise is ridiculous
- 57:16and we're gonna be as ridiculous as we
- 57:19Ryan: who was it ludicrous?
- 57:22Did he get sent
- 57:23Kearns: Yeah.
- 57:23Ryan: or
- 57:24Kearns: Yeah.
- 57:25Jon: Ludicrous was
- 57:26Kearns: Don't forget.
- 57:26Hi, Reese with Eject O, CTO C, all that.
- 57:31All right.
- 57:31What's your next one?
- 57:32Not for this nonsense,
- 57:33Ryan: next one, we've mentioned it before, my number three is slither
- 57:38that borrows from, uh, shivers,
- 57:41Kearns: Oh, shivers.
- 57:42Ryan: in night of the creeps.
- 57:44Jon: Yeah.
- 57:45Ryan: It's a combination.
- 57:46Um, not slither.
- 57:47Kearns: When you get into like B Horror, they're kind of all the same
- 57:50Ryan: Yeah,
- 57:51Kearns: Many.
- 57:52I mean, there's a lot that's wrong with that statement, but there's
- 57:54also a lot that's right with it.
- 57:56Ryan: yeah.
- 57:56No, no.
- 57:57It's true.
- 57:57That's why I avoided the slasher route because it was gonna be a
- 58:01copy of a copy, but I feel like.
- 58:03I mean, lockout is a decent movie, you know?
- 58:06fast and Furious is a decent movie to watch.
- 58:08Slither is an excellent movie.
- 58:10It stands on its own.
- 58:12Gunn does.
- 58:13He borrows and that's fine 'cause he gives it his unique taste.
- 58:16you got Michael Ruger, you got Fillon, you got Elizabeth Banks.
- 58:20Did, did I say his name wrong?
- 58:23I was waiting for Rucker.
- 58:26Jon: I've always thought it was
- 58:27Ryan: Rucker.
- 58:27Okay.
- 58:28Michael Rucker.
- 58:28No chocolate pretzels though for him.
- 58:30Kearns: John's facial expressions give him away too easily.
- 58:35Kinda stay dead pan like me, John.
- 58:37Ryan: well number two.
- 58:39two, I'm gonna roll up my sleeves because I do like this movie,
- 58:44Kearns: We gonna fight
- 58:45Ryan: It's a fistful of dollars.
- 58:48And, yo, yo Jimbo, yo Jimbo is definitely a, the Samurai sword
- 58:53against the Revolver is, I love the concept more the revolver against
- 58:58the rifle, but they're both classics.
- 59:00They're both classics.
- 59:01I like a for a few dollars more better, saying,
- 59:04Kearns: $2 more is better.
- 59:06Ryan: oh, with the, the
- 59:07Kearns: Yeah.
- 59:07For a few dollars more.
- 59:08Ryan: I'll stand on my soapbox and say, that's better than
- 59:12Kearns: Alright.
- 59:12Ryan: and good in the bad and the ugly.
- 59:14Kearns: I mean, you can't, you're not wrong.
- 59:15It's just, it's so tough to get like to, to Smirch.
- 59:18Such a wonderful piece of Americana.
- 59:20Ryan: Oh,
- 59:21Kearns: Clint Eastwood's still hanging on there, by the way.
- 59:24Jon: Yeah.
- 59:24Kearns: Yeah, baby.
- 59:26Ryan: see
- 59:26Kearns: he's gone cuckoo for cocoa pups a little bit, but that's fine.
- 59:29Ryan: Dairy Harry movie in the mix.
- 59:31Jack Nicholson has the villain.
- 59:32Let's do it.
- 59:33Kearns: Ooh, let's hit it.
- 59:34Uh, he would've to drag his fat arse outta his apartment.
- 59:38He's in rough shape
- 59:40Jon: what would another dirty, hairy movie be right
- 59:43Ryan: We have
- 59:44Jon: He's
- 59:45Kearns: how racist the Dirty Harry is.
- 59:48Jon: he's solving crimes in the nursing
- 59:50Kearns: Yeah.
- 59:51Ryan: Ted.
- 59:51Kearns: be more like, uh, Bubba Hotep,
- 59:53Ryan: can do it,
- 59:54Jon: yeah.
- 59:55Ryan: Hoep can do it.
- 59:56Dirty
- 59:57Kearns: speaking of
- 59:57Jon: Well,
- 59:58Kearns: implicit racism, did.
- 1:00:00Jon: Ted Danson show is based on a documentary.
- 1:00:03Ryan: show
- 1:00:03Kearns: Oh, really?
- 1:00:04Jon: Yeah.
- 1:00:05There's an Argentin documentary where a guy actually does that,
- 1:00:10like he thinks that there's like abuse going on in a nursing home,
- 1:00:13so he goes undercover in a nursing
- 1:00:15Ryan: Oh, that's
- 1:00:15Kearns: And but he finds abuse, by the way.
- 1:00:18Jon: Oh, absolutely.
- 1:00:20Kearns: Yeah.
- 1:00:21All right, Ryan, what's next?
- 1:00:22Ryan: one.
- 1:00:23Um, hoping to see this in theaters.
- 1:00:25This, uh, I think November, December, um, it's gonna be Kill Bill and that's
- 1:00:30based on a movie called Lady Snowbird.
- 1:00:33Um, which I learned today and I love Kill Bill, but Lady
- 1:00:37Snowbird has a cult following.
- 1:00:40Jon: or snow
- 1:00:40Kearns: Now is this, is this derivative of, or is this stolen from, because
- 1:00:44isn't it pretty implied that he's, he's paying homage the whole time,
- 1:00:48Ryan: it's very derivative.
- 1:00:49similar stories with the revenge concept.
- 1:00:51the list.
- 1:00:53But Kill Bill is more popular 'cause it's Tarantino.
- 1:00:58Kearns: but Yeah.
- 1:00:59Ryan: Ladies, snow, blood, snowbird,
- 1:01:01Jon: original, it's
- 1:01:02Ryan: it's snow Blood.
- 1:01:03I got Snowbird, I'm sorry,
- 1:01:04Jon: the original, also in 1973
- 1:01:07Ryan: peak Japanese film.
- 1:01:10Jon: but like it, it's peak Japanese film, but it's not peak Japanese
- 1:01:14film saturating American markets.
- 1:01:18Ryan: Okay.
- 1:01:18Fair.
- 1:01:19Because like you, if you think about it, on a side note, you go into Awa, seven
- 1:01:23Samurai, magnificent seven Yo Jimbo Fist, full of dollars Hidden Fortress.
- 1:01:29Star Wars, ladies and gentlemen.
- 1:01:31Um,
- 1:01:32Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 1:01:33Ryan: you know, I guess it had to take time.
- 1:01:35It's like Things running up that hill.
- 1:01:39Uh, Kate, Kate Bush once.
- 1:01:43The show aired it with the song it beca she became a big head again.
- 1:01:46So it's like, it takes time.
- 1:01:48But, no Kill Bill.
- 1:01:49It's just a classic.
- 1:01:50he does do a lot of homages.
- 1:01:53it's a lady snow blood, and to a lot of other samurai classics and,
- 1:01:57a lot of knots and I can't wait.
- 1:02:00Jon: I mean that's kind of his thing, right?
- 1:02:02Like
- 1:02:03Ryan: Oh yeah,
- 1:02:03Jon: all of his movies have the, at least a passing homage to stuff
- 1:02:08that he loved from 30 years earlier.
- 1:02:11Ryan: God.
- 1:02:11The Jackie Brown, uh, with black, uh, blacksploitation film, uh, pulp Fiction,
- 1:02:17rest of her dogs with Um, even with, um, death proof with that horror, which
- 1:02:25Kearns: Yeah.
- 1:02:25Ryan: I, I like death proof between the both of them,
- 1:02:29but just me being a Terrance,
- 1:02:31Jon: I prefer planet terror.
- 1:02:33Ryan: yes I can.
- 1:02:34It's that the zombies.
- 1:02:35Bruce Willis turning Josh Brolin.
- 1:02:38That hand scene gets me though.
- 1:02:40the worst scene.
- 1:02:41It's not as, you know, bring her back, is like right there.
- 1:02:45And then
- 1:02:46Jon: Mm.
- 1:02:46Ryan: the hand scene's there.
- 1:02:48I, I, you know, but John, what's your
- 1:02:51Kearns: Mute him.
- 1:02:52How do I mute him?
- 1:02:53Jon: let, let, let me, let me just hit you with
- 1:02:55Kearns: He's a cohost.
- 1:02:56I can't
- 1:02:57Jon: I'm, I'm giving out a whole bunch of physical media recommendations.
- 1:03:01There's a Criterion released Lady Snow,
- 1:03:05Ryan: Ooh,
- 1:03:05Jon: and there's a Criterion Sale on Barnes and Noble right now, 50%
- 1:03:09off, so it's probably like 20 bucks.
- 1:03:10Highly,
- 1:03:11Kearns: say what.
- 1:03:12Jon: recommend
- 1:03:12Ryan: I will definitely, um, that's my goal this week, lady.
- 1:03:15Snow, blood.
- 1:03:16I'm gonna, actually,
- 1:03:17Jon: Yeah, highly recommend it.
- 1:03:21Okay, so I went
- 1:03:26top five games in movies, and I didn't stick to horror this time because Battle
- 1:03:32Royal isn't like a true horror movie.
- 1:03:35So I feel like that left me open to go with some non horror movies
- 1:03:40with games, which is evident in my number five surviving the Game.
- 1:03:46Ryan: Oh,
- 1:03:46Kearns: he's back.
- 1:03:47I heard something.
- 1:03:48Ryan: Sorry.
- 1:03:48thought we lost you.
- 1:03:49Jon: Okay.
- 1:03:50Kearns: Okay.
- 1:03:50Let's get it done.
- 1:03:51Jon: No, I, I can tell 'cause you guys stopped moving when I, when I go out,
- 1:03:57I was like, wait, they're not moving.
- 1:03:58Uhoh.
- 1:03:59Kearns: Oh,
- 1:04:01Jon: Oh no, it happened again.
- 1:04:02So anyway, my number five is surviving the game.
- 1:04:05Ryan: Okay.
- 1:04:06Kearns: okay.
- 1:04:06Surviving the game.
- 1:04:08Ryan: the game.
- 1:04:08Jon: yep.
- 1:04:09Yeah.
- 1:04:09A homeless man played by ice tea thinks he has been hired as a survival guide,
- 1:04:14Kearns: That's a good one.
- 1:04:15Jon: is to be the prey for a group of rich hunters in this
- 1:04:19variant of the most dangerous
- 1:04:20Ryan: I'm sold.
- 1:04:21Kearns: It's a good movie.
- 1:04:22Jon: Um, it's, oh, it's such a good movie
- 1:04:25Kearns: I like when he tricksy with the cigarettes.
- 1:04:27It's my favorite.
- 1:04:29Jon: Yep.
- 1:04:30So it's an, it's an Earnest Dickerson movie.
- 1:04:32You guys will know him by his other works.
- 1:04:35He's awesome.
- 1:04:36Rutger Hower, Charles Dutton, Gary Busey.
- 1:04:39He, the cast rules the, the action is awesome.
- 1:04:43Ice tea is cool and it highly recommend surviving the game.
- 1:04:47my number four is back to her.
- 1:04:50Would you rather.
- 1:04:51Ryan: Oh,
- 1:04:52Kearns: Ah.
- 1:04:55Jon: So a, woman played by Brittany Snow agrees to take part in a game
- 1:04:59hoping to win and help her sick brother.
- 1:05:02She soon realizes this game has devastating consequences for the losers.
- 1:05:08it's, this also has a really fun cast, including Jeffrey Combs, retired adult
- 1:05:14actress, Sasha Gray and Wells, who's Ricky from the Trailer Park Boys.
- 1:05:21Kearns: heard of her.
- 1:05:23Ryan: She was in Entourage.
- 1:05:24Jon: Now me, I'd never heard of her either.
- 1:05:26I knew her from her.
- 1:05:27I work at
- 1:05:28Ryan: Yeah, she was in,
- 1:05:29Kearns: Yes,
- 1:05:29Ryan: she was Vincent Chase's, uh, girlfriend for season seven.
- 1:05:34Jon: Yeah.
- 1:05:34Kearns: nifty.
- 1:05:35Ryan: Yeah.
- 1:05:36Jon: yeah, that's where I know her from.
- 1:05:37Ryan: What
- 1:05:38Jon: had to look up the retired adult actors part.
- 1:05:40I didn't know that.
- 1:05:43Kearns: Give it a complete dead pan on it too.
- 1:05:45It's great.
- 1:05:46All right.
- 1:05:47Moving on.
- 1:05:48Jon: Um, my number three, I feel like could almost on Ryan's list.
- 1:05:54It, it, it's, it's more ripped off than it's a ripoff.
- 1:05:59It's a movie called Cube.
- 1:06:00Kearns: You could have said then a bandaid and a bathtub.
- 1:06:03Come on man.
- 1:06:04Ryan: we're talking about.
- 1:06:05Jon: a, um,
- 1:06:06Kearns: Ew.
- 1:06:06Baby cube is a ripoff.
- 1:06:08Jon: cube.
- 1:06:08Ryan: Yep.
- 1:06:09Jon: No, I, I fee that is cube is less the ripoff than the ripoff
- 1:06:14Ryan: Yes.
- 1:06:15Jon: He's like recently watched,
- 1:06:17Ryan: Yep.
- 1:06:18Jon: there's a lot of
- 1:06:19Kearns: There's the platform one too.
- 1:06:21Jon: of cube elements
- 1:06:22Kearns: Yeah, there's the one with the platform levels.
- 1:06:25Jon: also.
- 1:06:25Yeah.
- 1:06:26Ryan: Yep.
- 1:06:26Jon: Yeah.
- 1:06:27Um, so six strangers wake to find themselves trapped in a cube that
- 1:06:31opens into a maze of deadly rooms.
- 1:06:34As they progress through the maze.
- 1:06:36Escape seems more unlikely and death lurks behind every
- 1:06:40Ryan: I heard they were
- 1:06:41Kearns: Hey.
- 1:06:41Ryan: remake of it.
- 1:06:43think it's a rumor.
- 1:06:43Oh, they are.
- 1:06:44All right.
- 1:06:44I thought it was a rumor.
- 1:06:46Jon: No, I, no, I, it may actually be coming out in the next month or two.
- 1:06:52I, I saw something about it really recently.
- 1:06:55Kearns: It's gonna be extra gory.
- 1:06:57Ryan: that, yep.
- 1:06:58Jon: four or five sequels and a Japanese version and like everybody,
- 1:07:04Ryan: The Japanese version, I think was first, I think, right?
- 1:07:08Jon: it may have been
- 1:07:10Ryan: I'm trying to remember.
- 1:07:11Jon: this might, this might be in one of the rare times it went the other way.
- 1:07:15Ryan: Huh?
- 1:07:16Kearns: Okay.
- 1:07:16Ryan: Win for us.
- 1:07:17All right.
- 1:07:19Jon: Yeah.

- 1:07:24It's a movie called Beyond the Gates.
- 1:07:27Kearns: Okay.
- 1:07:27Jon: so two brothers reunite at their Missing Father's video store to sell it.
- 1:07:32When they discover a VHS board game as they play it, the mystery of their
- 1:07:37missing dad begins to be revealed, as does the true danger of this game.
- 1:07:43And, you know, this has.
- 1:07:45This has a really cool indie horror cast with Barbara Crampton Graham,
- 1:07:50skipper Chase Williamson, who is so awesome in, uh, John dies at the
- 1:07:54end, and Bria Grant, who's really good in a whole bunch of stuff.
- 1:08:00Highly re highly recommend beyond, beyond the
- 1:08:02Ryan: Got my attention.
- 1:08:03Jon: And my number, one is definitely not horror.
- 1:08:07And feel like it's kind of underrated.

- 1:08:21Kearns: I love that movie.
- 1:08:22I was wondering if you were gonna bring it out.
- 1:08:25Jon: Uh, absolutely.
- 1:08:26Ryan: good.
- 1:08:27Jon: Michael Douglas, Sean Penn, Nicholas lives a very wealthy
- 1:08:31structured life until his brother purchases a birthday gift for him.
- 1:08:35That changes everything overnight.
- 1:08:38Nicholas finds his life in danger from this immersive game.
- 1:08:43Kearns: It's a good one.
- 1:08:44If you haven't seen the game, watch the game.
- 1:08:46Ryan: Yep.
- 1:08:47Jada born for me for my birthday.
- 1:08:49It's awesome.
