- 0:00SPEAKER_01: Welcome to Connectivity Without Chaos,
- 0:01SPEAKER_01: the podcast for IT leaders who are done managing networks by guesswork.
- 0:06SPEAKER_01: In each episode,
- 0:07SPEAKER_01: we break down the systems,
- 0:08SPEAKER_01: strategies, and decisions that eliminate the hidden IT tax.
- 0:12SPEAKER_01: So your infrastructure becomes reliable, secure, and built to scale.
- 0:17SPEAKER_01: Today, we share data center market insights.
- 0:20SPEAKER_01: So imagine securing the budget for a massive multi-million dollar AI data center, right?
- 0:26SPEAKER_01: But then you realize you can't actually turn it on until like 2027.
- 0:29SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 0:30SPEAKER_00: And not because you're missing the servers.
- 0:32SPEAKER_01: Exactly.
- 0:32SPEAKER_01: It's because you're waiting on one single unglamorous piece of electrical equipment.
- 0:36SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 0:37SPEAKER_00: It is the exact reality right now.
- 0:38SPEAKER_00: I mean, we're looking at this profound scale disparity.
- 0:42SPEAKER_00: The U.S. is currently leading the world with over 4,000 data centers.
- 0:46SPEAKER_01: 4,000, wow.
- 0:47SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and China's in second place with under 1,000.
- 0:50SPEAKER_00: So that physical footprint is driving this massive,
- 0:52SPEAKER_00: I think it's 59% year-over-year growth in capital expenditure.
- 0:57SPEAKER_00: Money is just flooding it.
- 0:58SPEAKER_01: But building it is only half the battle, you know.
- 1:01SPEAKER_01: A facility without power is basically just an expensive warehouse.
- 1:04SPEAKER_01: And everyone always blames the microchip shortage.
- 1:06SPEAKER_00: Oh, sure.
- 1:07SPEAKER_00: That's the easy target.
- 1:08SPEAKER_01: But our sources in this deep dive highlight a totally different bottleneck,
- 1:12SPEAKER_01: which is electrical grid step-up transformers.
- 1:16SPEAKER_01: It's like trying to drink from a fire hose through a coffee straw.
- 1:19SPEAKER_00: That's a great analogy.
- 1:20SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 1:21SPEAKER_01: The grid has the power and the data center needs the power,
- 1:24SPEAKER_01: but the step-up transformer is the valve that actually makes it usable.
- 1:28SPEAKER_01: And right now there's a two and a half to three year wait just to get those valves.
- 1:32SPEAKER_00: Yeah, because these aren't just off the shelf parts.
- 1:35SPEAKER_00: They're massive custom built equipment needing specialized copper and steel.
- 1:40SPEAKER_00: And they're facing severe global supply chain bottlenecks.
- 1:44SPEAKER_01: It's wild.
- 1:44SPEAKER_00: It is.
- 1:45SPEAKER_00: I mean, the globe needs an additional 100 gigawatts of capacity by 2030.
- 1:49SPEAKER_00: It's gotten so bad that the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, FERC,
- 1:55SPEAKER_00: actually put six regional grid operators on a 60-day clock
- 1:59SPEAKER_00: to reform their interconnection frameworks.
- 2:01SPEAKER_01: Wait, 60 days?
- 2:03SPEAKER_01: But FERC mandates usually move at the speed of bureaucracy.
- 2:07SPEAKER_01: Is a 60-day paperwork mandate actually going to speed up a physical three-year hardware backlog?
- 2:14SPEAKER_00: Well, no,
- 2:14SPEAKER_00: it won't manufacture transformers any faster,
- 2:17SPEAKER_00: but it tackles the second massive bottleneck, which is the legal gridlock.
- 2:21SPEAKER_01: Okay, how so?
- 2:23SPEAKER_00: So right now,
- 2:23SPEAKER_00: regional grids have these opaque,
- 2:25SPEAKER_00: incredibly slow procedures just to grant a facility permission to connect.
- 2:31SPEAKER_00: FERC is basically demanding standardized transparent procedures.
- 2:35SPEAKER_01: Ah, so when your hardware finally does arrive...
- 2:38SPEAKER_01: The bureaucratic approval is already sorted out Exactly,
- 2:41SPEAKER_00: rather than delaying you another two years on top of it That makes total sense So
- 2:44SPEAKER_01: because power access is so scarce right now Data center landlords basically hold all
- 2:49SPEAKER_01: the cards 100% Which makes me wonder,
- 2:51SPEAKER_01: if you're an IT leader listening right now Managing
- 2:53SPEAKER_01: a normal mid-sized business Are you just priced out entirely?
- 2:56SPEAKER_01: Like, are AI giants just swallowing all the megawatts?
- 2:59SPEAKER_00: Well, it heavily depends
- 3:00SPEAKER_00: on your scale Multi-megawatt facilities are definitely selling out years in advance
- 3:05SPEAKER_00: But landlords are actually terrified of an AI bubble
- 3:07SPEAKER_01: Really?
- 3:08SPEAKER_01: Why?
- 3:08SPEAKER_00: Because they don't want a startup renting massive power allocations and then going bankrupt.
- 3:13SPEAKER_00: So they are rigorously vetting tenant use cases and GPU densities now.
- 3:18SPEAKER_01: Oh, they want to know exactly how much heat and power your specific server racks will draw.
- 3:22SPEAKER_00: Right, because AI servers run significantly hotter than traditional ones.
- 3:27SPEAKER_00: But if you're looking at the mid-market space,
- 3:29SPEAKER_00: say one to five cabinets, that actually remains highly available.
- 3:32SPEAKER_01: Available, sure, but definitely not cheap.
- 3:35SPEAKER_01: I mean, when Illinois recently canceled its data center tax abatement program,
- 3:39SPEAKER_01: That sent a huge message.
- 3:41SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it really did.
- 3:42SPEAKER_01: The state realized it doesn't need to offer tax breaks to entice buyers
- 3:46SPEAKER_01: when buyers are already lining up around the block.
- 3:48SPEAKER_01: And that trickles down to what you pay for a single cabinet.
- 3:51SPEAKER_00: Oh, absolutely.
- 3:52SPEAKER_00: Three to five percent annual price accelerators are basically
- 3:56SPEAKER_00: the industry standard now just to cover those soaring power costs.
- 3:59SPEAKER_01: Which I imagine is driving a lot of this pivot toward cloud repatriation that we're seeing.
- 4:04SPEAKER_00: Yes, exactly.
- 4:05SPEAKER_00: Businesses are migrating core infrastructure out of public clouds, like AWS and Azure.
- 4:11SPEAKER_00: They just want to escape those unpredictable recurring costs that keep climbing.
- 4:16SPEAKER_01: But wait,
- 4:17SPEAKER_01: if I move workloads out of the public cloud to avoid costs,
- 4:20SPEAKER_01: but I can't buy my own NVIDIA servers to build my infrastructure,
- 4:25SPEAKER_01: aren't I just stuck in limbo?
- 4:27SPEAKER_00: It definitely seems that way, yeah.
- 4:29SPEAKER_01: I mean, NVIDIA B300 servers cost like half a million to $600,000 each,
- 4:34SPEAKER_01: and they're sold out until 2026.
- 4:36SPEAKER_00: Right, so you avoid that trap by utilizing a dedicated private cloud workaround.
- 4:41SPEAKER_01: Okay, how did that work?
- 4:42SPEAKER_00: Basically, by leasing supplier-owned hardware,
- 4:45SPEAKER_00: You're buying into a facility that already has its transformers installed,
- 4:49SPEAKER_00: its grid access secured, and the hardware is already racked.
- 4:53SPEAKER_01: Oh, so you get the dedicated GPU horsepower without the weight.
- 4:56SPEAKER_00: Exactly.
- 4:57SPEAKER_00: Because you leverage a supplier's existing inventory, you can slash your time to market by 90%.
- 5:03SPEAKER_01: You completely bypass the physical bottlenecks.
- 5:05SPEAKER_00: You do.
- 5:06SPEAKER_00: But, you know, it leaves us with an incredibly provocative question.
- 5:09SPEAKER_01: What's that?
- 5:09SPEAKER_00: Well, we noted landlords are terrified of an AI bubble.
- 5:13SPEAKER_00: So if the mass of AI startups taking down six figures of power a month fail
- 5:17SPEAKER_00: to generate actual revenue and go under what happens
- 5:19SPEAKER_00: to this unprecedented grid infrastructure we're rushing to build.
- 5:23SPEAKER_01: Oh, wow.
- 5:24SPEAKER_01: Do we just end up with a glut of ghost data centers?
- 5:27SPEAKER_01: That is definitely something to think about.
