Latest / DEEP INSIGHT / Midwest storm erupts into major cross-country winter blast
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: A big winter storm bringing heavy snow and rain departs
- 0:03Speaker 1: of the country, slowing down flights, making driving dangerous for
- 0:06Speaker 1: millions of holiday travelers. Chicago is seeing some of the
- 0:09Speaker 1: worst disruptions this weekend, with more than eleven hundred flights
- 0:12Speaker 1: canceled or delayed today. In Iowa, the state police said
- 0:17Speaker 1: it had to really rescue more than two hundred people
- 0:20Speaker 1: out of ditches after their cars slit off slick roads
- 0:23Speaker 1: like that. One meteorologist, Chris Warren is tracking this storm
- 0:27Speaker 1: and Chris, I think a lot of people probably on
- 0:29Speaker 1: the move tonight.
- 0:30Speaker 2: Where is the storm headed next?
- 0:32Speaker 3: Well, the storm is moving out, but that's one storm.
- 0:35Speaker 3: There's a new storm that'll be developing for tomorrow and
- 0:38Speaker 3: tomorrow night. But right now the latest with the airports
- 0:42Speaker 3: LaGuardia and Boston still seeing DeLay's departure delays around an
- 0:47Speaker 3: hour or so. But the areas you mentioned in Iowa
- 0:50Speaker 3: and then Illinois and Indiana getting a break right now
- 0:54Speaker 3: and for now.
- 0:55Speaker 2: One of the other issues.
- 0:56Speaker 3: We're dealing with across the Northeast the winds. Winds gusting
- 0:59Speaker 3: round Buffalo up to forty miles an hour through tomorrow,
- 1:03Speaker 3: still seeing things rather gusty twenty to twenty five mile
- 1:06Speaker 3: in hour winds into the afternoon. So here's that departing
- 1:09Speaker 3: system right here with the snow showers. Much more hit
- 1:13Speaker 3: and miss at the moment, with rain making it at
- 1:16Speaker 3: times a little tough on the roadways in terms of
- 1:19Speaker 3: seeing some ponding on the road, some of the puddles
- 1:22Speaker 3: and some of the just tough travel anyways, kind of
- 1:25Speaker 3: making it worse with the rain. But then the next one,
- 1:28Speaker 3: the next one again for tomorrow and tomorrow night. These
- 1:31Speaker 3: alerts winter weather alerts are in effect for the next
- 1:35Speaker 3: system that's gonna develop. And this is how it's gonna
- 1:37Speaker 3: play out. This is the high resolution future radar give
- 1:40Speaker 3: us a general idea of how things a pretty good
- 1:42Speaker 3: idea how things are gonna play out in terms of
- 1:44Speaker 3: the rain, green and then the snow and then the
- 1:46Speaker 3: blueish colors. By tomorrow afternoon into the evening, six point
- 1:50Speaker 3: thirty snow returns for parts of Iowa, almost all of Illinois,
- 1:56Speaker 3: Indiana once again. So this is another system we have
- 1:59Speaker 3: the one over the weekend. This is a new one
- 2:02Speaker 3: for tomorrow afternoon, tomorrow evening around the Great Lakes, pushing
- 2:06Speaker 3: off by early Tuesday into the northeast, and at times
- 2:10Speaker 3: the snow will be heavy, but there's also something else.
- 2:13Speaker 3: You have the rain down here and some storms which
- 2:15Speaker 3: will be a mess. But in between there's also the
- 2:18Speaker 3: potential for ice. So while there could be pockets of
- 2:21Speaker 3: heavy snow in Pennsylvania and New York, it is going
- 2:24Speaker 3: to be this ice.
- 2:24Speaker 4: Jessica.
- 2:25Speaker 3: We could see up to about a half an inch.
- 2:27Speaker 3: That ice. It's that freezing rain that can accumulate on
- 2:29Speaker 3: power lines and on trees and branches, bringing them down,
- 2:32Speaker 3: causing power outages, and Jessica, making travel very dangerous with ice.
- 2:37Speaker 1: All right, Chris Warren with the look ahead there, it
- 2:40Speaker 1: looks quite wintry. Thank you so much, and let's bring
- 2:43Speaker 1: in Going dot COM's travel expert Katie Nastro.
- 2:46Speaker 2: Katie, good to see you.
- 2:48Speaker 1: As Chris was just laying out, we have quite some
- 2:50Speaker 1: weather this weekend as people are trying to probably fly home.
- 2:54Speaker 1: How would you rate the travel weekend so far?
- 3:00Speaker 5: You know, look, unfortunately for some travelers, winter storms in
- 3:03Speaker 5: the Midwest have upended their journeys. As we look at
- 3:06Speaker 5: the busiest day when it comes to air travel specifically,
- 3:09Speaker 5: which is today, you know, looking at yesterday, seven percent
- 3:12Speaker 5: of all flights within in or out of the US
- 3:15Speaker 5: we're outrightly canceled per Syrium Syrium Aviation Analytics data, which
- 3:20Speaker 5: is roughly just over two thousand flights and nine thousand delayed.
- 3:24Speaker 5: Cities like Chicago as mentioned, des Moine Cedar Rapids as
- 3:28Speaker 5: well as Minneapolis really feeling the pinch, and more regional
- 3:32Speaker 5: airports as well. So in terms of what we're seeing. Obviously,
- 3:36Speaker 5: winter weather can always be impactful, but this is definitely
- 3:39Speaker 5: one for the books for sure.
- 3:41Speaker 2: Yeah, and so for people out there.
- 3:44Speaker 1: Who are wondering or maybe they have a family member
- 3:46Speaker 1: or friend, if your flight's canceled, what kind of rights
- 3:50Speaker 1: do you have?
- 3:50Speaker 2: What are you entitled to? What should you know?
- 3:54Speaker 5: Yeah, look, first and foremost, if your flight is outrightly
- 3:57Speaker 5: canceled under federal regulation, you have that right to request
- 4:00Speaker 5: a refund if you decide, you know what, I don't
- 4:03Speaker 5: want to travel or take a rebooking that the airline
- 4:06Speaker 5: that you're flying with provides. Now, I will say with
- 4:09Speaker 5: winter weather, we sometimes see airlines provide winter weather waivers
- 4:13Speaker 5: and all of the big three airlines American, Delta, United
- 4:17Speaker 5: have these winter weather travel alerts in place, and that
- 4:20Speaker 5: actually allows you to make changes to your itinerary, regardless
- 4:24Speaker 5: of your ticket type, even preemptively if your flight is
- 4:27Speaker 5: not outrightly canceled, but it has the likelihood of getting impacted.
- 4:31Speaker 5: And if you're unsure if the carrier that you're flying
- 4:33Speaker 5: with over this weekend has a travel alert in place,
- 4:36Speaker 5: it takes not even a moment go to Google, type
- 4:38Speaker 5: in travel alert and then your airline name and it
- 4:40Speaker 5: should pop right up.
- 4:42Speaker 2: Yeah, and that's important, I think too.
- 4:44Speaker 1: When you know there's going to be whether like look ahead,
- 4:46Speaker 1: see if you can kind of get ahead of everything
- 4:48Speaker 1: before you're standing at that gate and they say it's canceled,
- 4:51Speaker 1: that always helps. What other ideas and advice do you
- 4:55Speaker 1: have for people when it comes to managing a weekend
- 4:58Speaker 1: like this?
- 4:59Speaker 2: Are there apps rely on? Obviously you want to.
- 5:02Speaker 1: Have the airline that you're flying, you want to have
- 5:04Speaker 1: their app downloaded.
- 5:05Speaker 2: What else would you tell people?
- 5:07Speaker 5: Great point, you definitely want to have your airline app downloaded,
- 5:10Speaker 5: and you want to make sure you have those push
- 5:11Speaker 5: notifications on because those are going to be the fastest
- 5:14Speaker 5: form of communication with the airline as well as Flight
- 5:17Speaker 5: is a great app that actually pulls in different data
- 5:20Speaker 5: sets that will preemptively alert you to whether or not
- 5:23Speaker 5: your flight has the likelihood of getting delayed. Now it
- 5:26Speaker 5: is a paid subscription, but it's worth trying out, especially
- 5:30Speaker 5: during these winter weather months when we see a higher
- 5:33Speaker 5: likelihood of weather playing an impact and whether or not
- 5:35Speaker 5: you're going to see a travel disruption as well as
- 5:38Speaker 5: flight aware, and I would say, even you know, if
- 5:40Speaker 5: you're not flying to that destination that's impacted, even if
- 5:45Speaker 5: you're flying across the country, you still want to keep
- 5:47Speaker 5: an eye on the plane that's coming into where you're
- 5:50Speaker 5: taking out from because it can get impacted by weather.
- 5:53Speaker 2: And as we've seen.
- 5:55Speaker 5: Across the last few weeks, especially with the shutdown, you know,
- 5:57Speaker 5: the aviation system is really interconnect and it can have
- 6:01Speaker 5: a domino effect, so you can be outrightly impacted even
- 6:04Speaker 5: without being in that area that's seeing weather.
- 6:07Speaker 1: For example, Right, it's good to know where your plane's
- 6:10Speaker 1: coming from.
- 6:10Speaker 2: That always helps too.
- 6:12Speaker 1: And obviously we're looking ahead now to Christmas, we have
- 6:14Speaker 1: New Year's this is the time of year where people
- 6:16Speaker 1: continue to travel.
- 6:18Speaker 2: What would you what recommendations do you have.
- 6:20Speaker 1: Should people have already booked those tickets, are they going
- 6:23Speaker 1: to go down?
- 6:24Speaker 2: Should you book them now.
- 6:26Speaker 5: Yeah, I'm so glad you brought that up, because our
- 6:29Speaker 5: biggest piece of advice over it Going would be to
- 6:32Speaker 5: get your travel plans booked asap, especially those flights. You know,
- 6:37Speaker 5: Domestic flights, according to Going data, is up seven percent.
- 6:40Speaker 5: International flights are up around modestly, just one percent. But
- 6:44Speaker 5: you want to make sure now that we're heading into
- 6:45Speaker 5: those final weeks and we're coming into one of again,
- 6:49Speaker 5: one of those peak times of the year, you want
- 6:51Speaker 5: to ensure that you're getting a decent price and not
- 6:54Speaker 5: an astronomically high price when you wait till the last minute.
- 6:57Speaker 5: As well as I want to remind folks, definitely check
- 6:59Speaker 5: out travel Tuesday this Tuesday coming for some discounts, but
- 7:03Speaker 5: look to twenty twenty six Travels for taking advantage of it.
- 7:07Speaker 5: It's unlikely you're going to find rock bottom discounts at
- 7:10Speaker 5: this late in the game for those peak dates across
- 7:13Speaker 5: the winter holidays, so definitely get those booked.
- 7:15Speaker 1: Book them now, and you're probably gonna have to pay
- 7:17Speaker 1: all right, Katie, thank you so much.
- 7:19Speaker 2: Good to see you, and I.
- 7:20Speaker 3: Want to check in with Raphael Romo in Atlanta at
- 7:22Speaker 3: the world's busiest airport.
- 7:23Speaker 2: So what are you seeing on the ground there?
- 7:27Speaker 4: Yeah, Omar, earlier I showed you the baggage drop area
- 7:31Speaker 4: for Delta. Wasn't doing too bad. Then later we showed
- 7:34Speaker 4: you the main checkpoint, not too bad either. I want
- 7:38Speaker 4: to show you this area. This is a north ticketing
- 7:40Speaker 4: area and as you can see, this is perhaps the
- 7:43Speaker 4: busiest area in the entire airport. This is where you
- 7:46Speaker 4: find airlines including Alaska, Southwest, United is here, Jet Blue
- 7:52Speaker 4: is here. And take a look at this line, Omar,
- 7:55Speaker 4: It goes around the corner. People not as happy as
- 7:58Speaker 4: you would expect, although we see some smiley faces right
- 8:02Speaker 4: there in front of us, these lovely people going to
- 8:05Speaker 4: can you I ask you really quickly for CNN, where
- 8:07Speaker 4: are you guys going to?
- 8:08Speaker 3: We're going to Tampa, Florida, Tampa, Florida.
- 8:11Speaker 4: What do you think about the situation at the airport
- 8:13Speaker 4: right now?
- 8:13Speaker 6: It's not too bad so far, but we'll see security.
- 8:16Speaker 4: Good, have a nice flight. And that's pretty much what
- 8:19Speaker 4: people are telling us. I earlier had an opportunity to
- 8:22Speaker 4: talk to people, and I don't know what it is, Omar,
- 8:24Speaker 4: Maybe the spirit of Thanksgiving, the spirit of Christmas, but
- 8:27Speaker 4: people say so far, so good here at the Planta.
- 8:31Speaker 4: Let's take a listen to what they have to say.
- 8:34Speaker 6: I was in Fort Lauderdale, took me ten minutes to
- 8:37Speaker 6: get through security to the lounge, and here I've got
- 8:41Speaker 6: two hours for my flight. I get myself plenty of time,
- 8:44Speaker 6: so I'm not in a hurry, just going to enjoy
- 8:47Speaker 6: the day.
- 8:49Speaker 4: How has it been for you today?
- 8:51Speaker 2: Pretty easy, pretty smooth?
- 8:53Speaker 3: I mean.
- 8:55Speaker 4: It's going Is that pretty much what you expect that
- 8:58Speaker 4: Kans absolutely.
- 9:02Speaker 3: Now.
- 9:03Speaker 4: Chris was telling us earlier regarding the weather with snow
- 9:06Speaker 4: in Chicago, there was an airplane that slid off the
- 9:09Speaker 4: runway in the Moine. Here in the South, the problem
- 9:12Speaker 4: has been rain and it's just cloudy weather in general.
- 9:16Speaker 4: But that hasn't had a big impact so far. Anyway,
- 9:20Speaker 4: here at the world's busiest airport. Omar Now back to you.
- 9:23Speaker 3: Yeah, you got some people in good spirits at this point.
- 9:26Speaker 4: Always always a good thing when you actually have to
- 9:28Speaker 4: walk up and talk to him.
- 9:29Speaker 2: Raphael Romo, I appreciate the reporting
