Chapter five, Housekeeping. The next morning, Jess was up before the others,
• 0:08
as was fitting for a little housekeeper. That is, she was the
• 0:12
first, if we except the dog, who had opened one eye instantly every
• 0:16
time his little mistress stirred in her sleep. He sat watching gravely in the
• 0:21
door of the car. As Jess descended to get breakfast. She walked from
• 0:26
the little waterfall quite a distance down the brook, looking at it with critical
• 0:30
eyes. This will be the well, she said to herself, regarding a
• 0:35
small but deep and quiet basin just below the falls. Below that she found
• 0:41
a larger basin lined with gravel, with flat stones surrounding it. This will
• 0:46
be the wash tub, she decided, And now I must go back to
• 0:50
the refrigerator. This was the strangest spot of all, for behind the little
• 0:56
waterfall was a small, quiet pool in which Jess had set the milk bottles
• 1:00
the night before. Not a drop of water could get in, but all
• 1:04
night long the cool running water had surrounded the bottles. Now they were fairly
• 1:10
icy to the touch. Jess smiled as she drew them out. Is it
• 1:14
good, asked Benny's voice. There he sat in the door of the car,
• 1:19
swinging his legs his arm around the shaggy dog. It's delicious, declared
• 1:25
Jess, cold as ice. She climbed up beside him as she spoke,
• 1:30
bringing the breakfast with her. The other two children sat up and looked at
• 1:34
it. To day, Jess began, Henry, I will go back to
• 1:38
town and try to get a job mowing lawns or something. Then we can
• 1:42
afford to have something besides milk for breakfast. Milk suited Benny very well,
• 1:47
however, so the older children allowed him to drink rather more than his share.
• 1:52
Henry did not waste any time talking. He brushed his hair as well
• 1:55
as he could without a brush, rolled down his sleeves, and started for
• 2:00
town with a second dollar. Glad you've got a dog, Jess, he
• 2:04
called back as he waved his straw hat. The children watched him disappear around
• 2:09
the curve and then turned to Jess expectantly. They were not mistaken. Jess
• 2:15
had a plan, we'll explore, she began mysteriously. We'll begin here at
• 2:22
the car and hunt all over these woods until we find a dump. What's
• 2:28
a dump, inquired Benny. Oh, Benny answered Violet, you know what
• 2:32
a dump is. All old bottles and papers, and broken dishes and wheels,
• 2:38
asked Benny interestedly, Will there be any old wheels? Yes, maybe,
• 2:45
assented Violet. But cups, Benny, think of drinking milk out of
• 2:49
a cup again? Oh? Yes, said Benny politely, but it was
• 2:53
clear that his mind was centered on wheels rather than cups. The explorer parties
• 3:00
started slowly down the rusty track, with the dog hopping happily on three legs.
• 3:06
The fourth paw nicely bandaged with Jess's handkerchief he held up out of harm's
• 3:12
way. I think this is a spur track, said Jess. They built
• 3:16
it in here so they could load wood on the cars, and then when
• 3:20
they had cut all the wood, they didn't need the track any more.
• 3:23
This explanation seemed very likely, for here and there were stumps of trees and
• 3:29
decaying chips. Violet took note of these chips and remembered them some days later.
• 3:35
In fact, both girls kept their eyes open and pointed out things of
• 3:39
interest to each other. Remember these logs, Violet, if we should ever
• 3:44
need any, said Jess, pointing BlackBerry blossoms, returned Violet, briefly,
• 3:50
turning one over gently with her foot. Big flat stones, remarked Jess later
• 3:55
on, as they came upon a great heap of them. Here the track
• 4:00
came out into the open sunshine, and broken pieces of rail showed clearly where
• 4:05
it had joined the main track at some time in the past. And here,
• 4:11
from the top of the wooded hill, the children could plainly see the
• 4:15
city in the valley. They walked along the track, picking out a church
• 4:19
steeple here and there, forgetting for a moment the object of their search.
• 4:25
There's a wheel, Benny cried triumphantly from behind. The girls looked down,
• 4:30
and with a glad cry of surprise, Jess recognized a dump at the foot
• 4:34
of the hill. They found it not composed entirely of ashes into tin cans,
• 4:40
either, although both of these were there in great profusion. It was
• 4:44
a royal dump, containing both cups and wheels. Oh, Benny, cried
• 4:49
Jess, if it hadn't been for you. She hugged him wheel and all,
• 4:55
and began turning over the rubbish with great delight. Here's a white pit,
• 5:00
Jess, Violet called, holding up a perfect specimen with a tiny chip
• 5:04
in its nose. Here's a big white cup, said Jess, delightedly,
• 5:10
laying it aside. Want a teapot, Jesse inquired Benny, offering her an
• 5:15
enormous blue enameled affair without a handle. Yes, indeed, cried Jess,
• 5:20
we can use that for water. I've found two cups and a bowl already,
• 5:25
and Violet, we ought to be looking for spoons too, Violet pointed,
• 5:30
without speaking to her little pile of treasures, there were five iron spoons
• 5:34
covered with rust. Wonderful, pronounced Jess with rapture. Indeed, it is
• 5:42
doubtful if collectors of rare and beautiful bits of porcelain ever enjoyed a search as
• 5:47
much as did these adventurers. In the dump heap. Benny actually found four
• 5:53
wheels exactly alike, probably from the same cart, and insisted upon carrying them
• 5:59
back. To please him, Jess allowed him to add them to the growing
• 6:03
pile. Here's a big iron kettle, observed Violet. But we won't really
• 6:09
cook with a fire, will we. Jess. We'll take it back,
• 6:13
though, replied Jess with a knowing look. We can pile lots of dishes
• 6:15
in it. They could and did, but not until after Benny had discovered
• 6:21
his beloved pink cup. It was a tea party cup of bright rose color
• 6:28
with a wreath of gorgeous roses on it, and a little shepherdess giving her
• 6:32
lamb a drink from a pale blue brook. It had a perfectly good handle,
• 6:38
gold into the bargain. Its only flaw was a dangerous crack through the
• 6:42
lamb's nose and front feet. Jess made a cushion for it out of grass
• 6:46
and laid it on top of the kettle full of treasures. All the things,
• 6:51
even the wheels, were laid on a wide board, which the two
• 6:55
girls carried between them. Can you imagine the dish washing when the gay party
• 7:00
returned to the freight car. Children do not usually care for dish washing,
• 7:04
but never did a little boy hand dishes to his sister so carefully as Benny
• 7:09
did. On their hands and knees. Beside the clear, cool, little
• 7:14
washtub, the three children soaped and rinsed and dried their precious store of dishes.
• 7:19
Jess scoured the rust from the spoons with sand. There, she said,
• 7:25
drying the last polished spoon. The children sat back and looked admiringly at
• 7:30
their own handiwork, But they did not look too long. There was too
• 7:35
much to be done. Jess exclaimed, Violet, I'll tell you. Violet
• 7:41
seldom spoke so excitedly. Even Benny turned around and looked at her. Come
• 7:46
and see what I noticed inside the car last night. Both children followed her
• 7:50
and peered in at the door. See on the wall right over on the
• 7:56
other door, Jess. Now, all Jess could see there were two thick
• 8:01
chunks of wood nailed securely to the closed door opposite the open one. But
• 8:05
she whirled around and around as fast as she could, clapping her hands.
• 8:11
When she could get her breath, however, she skipped over to the board
• 8:13
they had carried, dusted it nicely, and laid it carefully across the two
• 8:18
wooden projections. It was a perfect shelf there, said Jess. The children
• 8:26
could hardly wait to arrange the shining new dishes on the shelf. Violet quietly
• 8:30
gathered some feathery white flowers, a daisy or two, and some maidenhair ferns,
• 8:35
which she arranged in a glass face filled with water from the well.
• 8:39
This she put in the middle, with the broken edge hidden there, said
• 8:45
Jess. You said there three times, Jessie, remarked. Benny contentedly,
• 8:52
So I did, replied, Jess laughing, but I'm going to say it
• 8:56
again. She pointed and said, there, Henry was coming up the path
• 9:03
  end of chapter five,
