Transcript
- 0:01Speaker 1: Here's your host, Alex Garren.
- 0:06Speaker 2: All right, well, on the main channel today, we're gonna
- 0:09Speaker 2: talk about why Saint John's winning their first tournament game
- 0:13Speaker 2: since two thoy twenty five years is amplified because of
- 0:19Speaker 2: the city, because of the borough they're in, and because
- 0:22Speaker 2: of the sports landscape and specifically college sports landscape. Because
- 0:26Speaker 2: I've been thinking about this last few minutes here, and
- 0:31Speaker 2: the reason why I think this is so special for us,
- 0:34Speaker 2: and I saw it at Queen's College too, is because the.
- 0:37Speaker 1: Parents, the friends of the athletes, the brothers, the sisters,
- 0:41Speaker 1: the siblings of.
- 0:41Speaker 2: The athletes, the professors of the athletes in New York
- 0:45Speaker 2: City alone, and of course Saint John's and yes a
- 0:52Speaker 2: Queen's College when there you have success. Are I feel
- 0:57Speaker 2: like so proud of these athletes more than any other
- 1:02Speaker 2: territory or city in the country. I think why this
- 1:06Speaker 2: is so specialist because we don't roll into these tournaments
- 1:09Speaker 2: and think we are so special that we deserve to
- 1:11Speaker 2: win this game or we deserve to be in.
- 1:13Speaker 1: The final four. We fight for it.
- 1:16Speaker 2: And isn't that the Borough of Queens and the borough
- 1:19Speaker 2: and the city on the whole. We fight for what
- 1:21Speaker 2: we deserve.
- 1:23Speaker 1: And we earn it.
- 1:26Speaker 2: Saint John's earned that title, they weren't given it. Saint
- 1:32Speaker 2: John's fought for that tournament win last night. It wasn't
- 1:36Speaker 2: easy some of the time against Omaha and the.
- 1:42Speaker 1: Kids cheering out of their friends at the Students Center.
- 1:46Speaker 1: How can you not love that?
- 1:49Speaker 2: But there's the sense of pride because this city, like
- 1:54Speaker 2: its people, aren't always an entitled bunch. We're not like
- 1:59Speaker 2: the SEC and I'm sorry Duke fans. We're not like
- 2:02Speaker 2: a Duke or North Carolina that say, well, we deserve
- 2:05Speaker 2: to be here, We're gonna be here, We're gonna you know.
- 2:07Speaker 1: We're always here.
- 2:10Speaker 2: Saint John's is acting like they've never been here before,
- 2:13Speaker 2: and it's true, in twenty five years they haven't. But
- 2:16Speaker 2: that mentality is gonna go so far, so far, because
- 2:22Speaker 2: when you act like you haven't been it makes it
- 2:25Speaker 2: even more rewarding, it makes it even more determinating.
- 2:31Speaker 1: Look at Bill's self in Kansas yesterday.
- 2:37Speaker 2: They are always there, and somehow a lot of the
- 2:41Speaker 2: time they're always out in the first or second round.
- 2:43Speaker 2: And I don't understand it. And it's true, these tournament
- 2:51Speaker 2: games are not guaranteed for anybody, but I think the
- 2:56Speaker 2: air surrounding those other schools as oh, yeah, we're here.
- 3:02Speaker 2: We deserve to be here, We deserve to get the calls. Meanwhile,
- 3:07Speaker 2: did you see how excited the Johnny's fan base was
- 3:09Speaker 2: in Providence?
- 3:11Speaker 1: The Johnny's cheer, the cheering for the Johnnies, the Rick
- 3:14Speaker 1: Patino chance. Did you hear any of that last night?
- 3:20Speaker 1: We're doing that because a part of.
- 3:24Speaker 2: Us never feels like we are giving it.
- 3:31Speaker 1: So when we earn it, the whole city earns it.
- 3:37Speaker 2: That's right, when we earn as a city these tournament wins.
- 3:45Speaker 2: There was Saint John's even.
- 3:47Speaker 1: Across the river with Saint Peter's their.
- 3:49Speaker 2: Run when sin Hall makes a run, When Seen Hall
- 3:55Speaker 2: won the n T last year, look at that excitement
- 3:58Speaker 2: that was brought to South Orange, New Jersey, and the
- 4:00Speaker 2: parade and all that, which had a Kadari Richmond on it.
- 4:03Speaker 2: By the way, these teams locally, we don't think we're
- 4:14Speaker 2: the biggest shot on campus. We play to earn and
- 4:20Speaker 2: win every game. This city is so motivated and surrounding
- 4:27Speaker 2: Saint John's with so much love because we're all We've
- 4:30Speaker 2: all been there to watch them get to this point.
- 4:36Speaker 2: I'm a proud accepted student of Saint John's. I never
- 4:40Speaker 2: was a student academically, but I'm proud to have been
- 4:44Speaker 2: accepted by Saint John's and I'm proud to see the
- 4:48Speaker 2: run thereon, just like I'm proud when I see Queen's
- 4:51Speaker 2: College basketball go to the playoffs, because we got to
- 4:55Speaker 2: support our local teams and we gotta act like we've
- 5:02Speaker 2: never been there before. And Patino has this team humble.
- 5:09Speaker 2: This team is humble, and every win's gonna be so sweet.
- 5:12Speaker 2: You know why, because yeah, it happens every so often,
- 5:16Speaker 2: but more so more so, we're a city that doesn't
- 5:22Speaker 2: always feel and when it comes to sports.
- 5:27Speaker 1: That we belong. I mean, yes, the Yankees.
- 5:36Speaker 2: Are in the playoffs almost every year, but it's a
- 5:39Speaker 2: fight to get to that postseason, isn't it.
- 5:42Speaker 1: Same with the Rangers. Look at what they're struggling with
- 5:44Speaker 1: right now. Look at the Knicks.
- 5:46Speaker 2: They have their ups and downs. The Johnnies are bringing
- 5:53Speaker 2: the city together. And as someone who's followed them and
- 5:57Speaker 2: fell in love with that campus since I was about
- 5:59Speaker 2: age fifteen or sixteen, going to student orientations and welcome
- 6:04Speaker 2: and open houses.
- 6:05Speaker 1: Oh my god, the open house my dad and I
- 6:07Speaker 1: went to.
- 6:09Speaker 2: This feels like a long time coming because this part
- 6:15Speaker 2: of Queen's Jamaica Queens.
- 6:19Speaker 1: Is a hotspot for winning.
- 6:22Speaker 2: And I grew up in Jamaica Queens since I was
- 6:24Speaker 2: age of ten, and having gotten to know some of
- 6:34Speaker 2: the folks in Saint John's athletics, whether it was on
- 6:37Speaker 2: a nine seven the answer over the years, or going
- 6:40Speaker 2: on campus to watch games and all that, I'm so
- 6:43Speaker 2: happy for them. I'm happy for the alumni of Saint
- 6:45Speaker 2: John's too, David Oliva, my friend's kim Ber and Aaron
- 6:49Speaker 2: from the dance team, Jess and Yvonne to other Saint
- 6:54Speaker 2: John's gowns. I know this is a moment, but if
- 7:01Speaker 2: you're connected with the community aj aj Panani as well,
- 7:05Speaker 2: if you're connected with the Saint John's community, you know
- 7:08Speaker 2: that we've all been waiting for this moment forever.
- 7:11Speaker 1: We used to get so excited over a Saint John's
- 7:13Speaker 1: win over Villadova.
- 7:15Speaker 2: Okay, now we can get excited over a tournament win
- 7:20Speaker 2: for the first time in twenty five years.
- 7:24Speaker 1: What a change up. And yes, Patino deserving to have
- 7:27Speaker 1: his name chaned.
- 7:27Speaker 2: I kind of joke put up the statue already because
- 7:30Speaker 2: he's made history even before reaching the final four, which
- 7:34Speaker 2: I think they still can do. And even in his
- 7:38Speaker 2: postgame press conference, you know, he was like.
- 7:40Speaker 1: Well, you can't let.
- 7:45Speaker 2: Cal Perry box you out like that, and he's already
- 7:48Speaker 2: focused on defeating coach Cal and they just won their
- 7:52Speaker 2: first tournament game in twenty five years. And his response is,
- 7:55Speaker 2: we can't. We can't let coach Cal and Arkansas beat us.
- 8:05Speaker 1: That's his first response. And I love that.
- 8:07Speaker 2: I love how focus is. I love how focused he
- 8:10Speaker 2: and Kadari have the team.
- 8:15Speaker 1: But we're we're enjoying this.
- 8:20Speaker 2: Because we're not one of those big schools that seems
- 8:26Speaker 2: to make it every year.
- 8:29Speaker 1: We're a school.
- 8:31Speaker 2: And I'm not saying we because I'm part of Saint John's,
- 8:34Speaker 2: but I'm saying we're as a city, and Saint John's
- 8:40Speaker 2: is our school. This is a school that puts its
- 8:49Speaker 2: head down and competes, and they don't always get the
- 8:55Speaker 2: highlights every night, but they compete and they win, and
- 9:02Speaker 2: now it's taking them to this big stage because they've
- 9:05Speaker 2: deserved it, because they're not a team that seems to
- 9:10Speaker 2: just be picked every year, even if someone else deserves
- 9:13Speaker 2: to be there, this team deserves it their spot in
- 9:19Speaker 2: the tournament, and they are proving that and the city
- 9:23Speaker 2: is motivating them and pushing them to the next level.
- 9:28Speaker 1: I think.
- 9:33Speaker 2: And my hope is that this team just acts like
- 9:46Speaker 2: they've been there with every win they've gotten and stays
- 9:50Speaker 2: humble like that because this is uncharted territory for Saint
- 9:54Speaker 2: John's program that has weighed twenty five years. Twenty five
- 10:00Speaker 2: years for a tournament.
- 10:02Speaker 1: W you know how.
- 10:04Speaker 2: Wild that is. So let's soak it up and let's
- 10:10Speaker 2: stay humble as a city and teach that humble to
- 10:17Speaker 2: all the city schools and say, no, what, yeah, you're
- 10:23Speaker 2: not a mid major team all the time. You're not
- 10:26Speaker 2: the Dukes, the Uncs, the Gonzagas, if you will, the UCLA's.
- 10:35Speaker 2: But we've got character. This city, this borough has character,
- 10:41Speaker 2: and I think what Saint john is doing is emblementic of.
- 10:44Speaker 1: The Borough of Queens.
- 10:45Speaker 2: You know why, because there are so many hardworking New
- 10:48Speaker 2: Yorkers in the Borough of Queens.
- 10:51Speaker 1: It emulates.
- 10:53Speaker 2: It's very similar, and that hard work it's not only
- 11:03Speaker 2: paying off in the court, but in the court on
- 11:06Speaker 2: the court, but in the culture of Saint John's and
- 11:09Speaker 2: of Queens this borough. So let's keep staying humble, Let's
- 11:18Speaker 2: keep working hard, Let's keep putting our head down and
- 11:21Speaker 2: getting our own victories in our lives and earning everything
- 11:26Speaker 2: we get.
- 11:30Speaker 1: Because that's what Saint John's doing. They're earning it and
- 11:35Speaker 1: they're not.
- 11:39Speaker 2: Asking for any kind of respect or you know, showing
- 11:42Speaker 2: off about it.
- 11:43Speaker 1: They just putting their head down and going on to
- 11:45Speaker 1: the next game. I think we can all learn from that.
- 11:52Speaker 2: So, yes, what Saint John's Runner is about is more
- 11:55Speaker 2: than just basketball. It's about a borough that fights tooth
- 12:02Speaker 2: and nail and works hard every day to keep New York.
- 12:08Speaker 1: City going and to keep the members of Queen's the
- 12:17Speaker 1: Borough of Queen's going.
- 12:22Speaker 2: And that's why, to me, this run is so important
- 12:25Speaker 2: and special, cause it's emblematic. It's emblematic of the hard
- 12:31Speaker 2: working members, citizens and residents of the.
- 12:37Speaker 1: Borough of Queens Go Johnny's Go, as Chuck Berry would sing.
