- 0:33Motorheads by Tammy Hetzer Woollmack for The Daily Independent. Eric
- 0:40Sloane is only twenty two, but he's paving the way
- 0:44for cancer awareness in a towering way. Straight from the
- 0:48driver's seat of his jacked up heavy duty mammoth machine.
- 0:54Sloan's tremendous truck makes big presents and awareness known in
- 0:59front of Dunham's Sports Saturday morning, steering straight toward the
- 1:04honesty of the fight against cancer. With a frank f
- 1:09ward wrapped across the wheel well, the statement shed sunlight
- 1:14lofted over the concrete parking lot. Courage against Cancer is
- 1:20emblazoned across his vinyl wrapped colossus of a pickup. Gaining

- 1:39Slung Specialized truck, a rallying racer dedicated to cancer survivor
- 1:45and those who waged a war against the disease, is
- 1:48a prize from an online social media contest, captured from
- 1:52a lottery of more than thirty four thousand finalists who
- 1:56bought merchandise to be entered into a final drawing. The
- 2:00Procterville man explained he knew if he came out on top,
- 2:05he would pledge the truck to his mammal, Janet Bowen,
- 2:09a five time cancer survivor. Resolution and Moxy of this
- 2:15family show in size of vehicle, Sloan laughs at his
- 2:19grandmother spunk during Quintessential Battles into Today's Remission. When she
- 2:25comes to your house to visit, she laughs and rolls
- 2:28out a tarp, He jokes, chuckling at the mollish eighty
- 2:33six year old woman. That way, if it's hard time
- 2:36to go, they can just roll her up and hit
- 2:39the road. Good natured ribbing aside, Folks perusing this truck
- 2:44learn a lot. The liftgate covered imprinted names of people
- 2:48slow met along his truck's journey, names of those who
- 2:52could not beat cancer, many who won, and some still
- 2:57in the trenches. He kindly doles black sharpie marker to
- 3:01those who want to memorialize loved ones. Sloan sidekick Olivia
- 3:07Holbrook twenty one, will soon become a backseat driver riding
- 3:11Shotgun with their baby boy in the back seat. At
- 3:15thirty eight weeks pregnant and hardly even showing her speed bump,
- 3:20there are no empty fumes with this young woman. She
- 3:24effortlessly hoists herself into the high rise truck. This week,
- 3:29Holbrook will park it, take a little car show pitstop,
- 3:33and buckle up for hard labor. Maverick Parker three is
- 3:38already firing on all cylinders by the ten am car
- 3:42show start, just by his top gun name. The flat
- 3:47Woods Boy already has need for speed and great balls
- 3:51of fire toddler energy. Darting to see his favorite sports cars,
- 3:56he is kicking the wheels of a high performance corvette,
- 3:59but of eventually sees himself in a blue or red truck.
- 4:04His wingman Daddy smiles as Maverick turns and burns caffeine,
- 4:09buzzes the power house tower and eyes the perfectly straight
- 4:16lines of shiny vehicles. The duo shares this love of
- 4:20fast cars. The boy wears a Hot Wheels tea short
- 4:23for today's Wander Russell Tourism Modorama, and is already sedan schooled.
- 4:30You know what an engine is, mav sores. It makes
- 4:33the car go. Fletcher Busteatter seven, Charlotte Bustetter five and

- 5:12get to visit their father at work sometimes and learn
- 5:16more about his life's work getting local folks back on
- 5:20the road. After a stint in Lexington, the family moved
- 5:24home to avoid the hustle and bustle and homeschool their
- 5:27growing family during COVID adventure days included trips to look
- 5:32at tractors, car shows and basic learning about auto repair
- 5:37and construction. Fletcher is beyond proud of his father's growing
- 5:42auto repair business house in the old McKinley McKinny Tire
- 5:47Warehouse in Russell. That puts so much work into it,
- 5:51he said, looking up at his joy riding pops. The

- 6:35Bays Bringing Brushes to Rudy Fest by Hallie Adams for
- 6:39The Daily Independent. A Grayson Artists will make the twenty
- 6:43fifth annual Rudy Fest a special through her artwork of
- 6:47the artwork of the latest American idol star to crash
- 6:51onto the music scene. Hailey Bays is taking her paint
- 6:55brushes an easel, paints, and a canvas to create a
- 6:59live painting of Hannah Harper's performance at Rudy Fest Thursday,
- 7:04June twenty fifth. Base said being able to create live
- 7:08pieces has allowed her to live out her childhood dream
- 7:12of becoming a full time artist. I had been painting
- 7:16because I enjoyed it, and then I started picking up
- 7:19little Christmas commissions for people, Base said, and it got
- 7:24to the point where I had so many people messaging
- 7:26me wanting artwork or wanting little side projects, that I
- 7:31realized that I didn't have enough time to do them
- 7:34because I was going to work. So I took a
- 7:37leap of faith and was like, well, let's try it.
- 7:41Since taking the leap of faith in twenty twenty three,
- 7:45Bays has created several pieces for clients and charities. Base said,
- 7:50seeing firsthand how art can change a person's life is
- 7:53something valuable to her. I had done a live painting
- 7:58at the Carter County Fair last year, and then I
- 8:01also did a painting last year at Healing Appalachia that
- 8:05we auctioned off for fostering possibilities. Rudy approached me and
- 8:10was like, Hey, would you want to do one of
- 8:13those paintings like you did at Tyler Child's up here,
- 8:17and we do the same thing for fostering possibilities, Base said,
- 8:21I will almost always show up to live paint, especially
- 8:26if it's for a cause. When painting a lie portrait,
- 8:30Bay said, there is a lot of prep that goes
- 8:33into creating the piece before and after the event is finished.
- 8:38What I'll do is paint it to a certain point,
- 8:41and if it's not finished, then I take it home
- 8:43to my studio and finish it. A lot of times,
- 8:47whenever I am doing a music festival or something like that,
- 8:51I'm whipping it out as fast as I can, she said.
- 8:55So for Hannah's, I'll probably set up early in the
- 8:58day and do that background and people can come over
- 9:03and hang out with me, but it'll probably take five
- 9:07to seven hours. Bays was introduced to Rudy Fest by
- 9:11her brother and his friends when she was a teenager.
- 9:15She has been coming back to the music festival almost
- 9:18every year since then. Rudy Fest will kick off its
- 9:22twenty fifth anniversary Saturday, June twentieth, and host bands both
- 9:28locally and nationally recognized throughout the week. Some of the
- 9:33bands playing at Rudy Fest this year include Doyle Lawson
- 9:37and Quicksilver, Dell McCrory, Lonesome Express, Cole Cheney, and more.
- 9:45Festival organizer in the festival's named sake, Rudy Burchett said,
- 9:50one of the best ways people can stay informed before
- 9:52they come to the festival is to visit Rudy Fest's
- 9:56Facebook page. If you're coming Thursday, here early, it's going
- 10:01to be a big crowd. If you need anything, We've
- 10:04got all got staff on the back of our t shirts,
- 10:07burchet said, So if you need something, ask but get
- 10:12here early on Thursday because we are going to have
- 10:14a line coming up the hill. And buy a ticket
- 10:17for this painting because it is going to a good cause.

- 15:34opportunities in Ashland's future by Aaron Snyder of The Daily Independent,
- 15:40Ashland's economic development specialists said during a recent presentation to
- 15:44Mayor Chuck Charles and the Commissioners that based on data
- 15:49and trends, the city's Economic Development Department remains optimistic about
- 15:55the potential for new retail and dining options. The government
- 16:00recently received community data through the city's partnership with Blueprint Kentucky.
- 16:06Eden Mackenzie said this data provides valuable insights into demographic trends,
- 16:13workforce characteristics, and economic indicators specific to Ashland. Mackenzie said.
- 16:20She said that data will help Aachlan better target industries,
- 16:24refine our recruitment strategies, and ensure we are making data
- 16:29driven decisions moving forward. Through meetings with the state's Cabinet
- 16:34for Economic Development and information from the Kentucky Association for
- 16:39Economic Development, the city is working to attract investment into
- 16:43opportunity zones in the city. Mackenzie, a recent graduate of
- 16:48the University of Oklahoma Homa Economic Development Institute, said the
- 16:54city is seeing steady interest from small manufacturing companies with
- 16:59several active prospects seeking facilities in the ten thousand to
- 17:04fifteen thousand square foot range. The city's economic development team
- 17:09is actively engaging with site selectors in hopes of bringing
- 17:15potential suitors to Ashland, she said. Mackenzie said the fast
- 17:20casual dining concept is at the top of every site
- 17:23selector list currently. She mentioned restaurants like Chipotle, Coffee, drive
- 17:30through establishments such as Dunkin Donuts and seven Brew and
- 17:35specialized chicken chains as the top three through every site
- 17:40selector Webinar discussions continue regarding the former ak Steel coke
- 17:46plant site, she said, as multiple parties are engaged in
- 17:50conversations surrounding potential acquisition and development. Mackenzie also emphasized the
- 17:57mission of meeting the increasing demand for quality housing in
- 18:02the city. Commissioner dj Reimer asks what challenges do businesses
- 18:07face if they want to invest in downtown. He pointed
- 18:11out there are several open retail spaces in the city.
- 18:17Mackenzie said a weakness in Ashland is we have unrealistic
- 18:22pricing on properties. A lot of these property owners want two, three,
- 18:29four times what the appraisal price is. She continued, When
- 18:33you tack on acquisition costs and construction cost it just
- 18:37doesn't make the project feasible. That is one of the
- 18:41biggest hurdles we face. That means tough conversations you have
- 18:46you have with property owners. If the prize isn't correct,
- 18:50they can't even sell or lease. Other highlights from Thursday's meeting,
- 18:56Commissioners approved upon second reading a series US bond ordinance
- 19:02authorizing the issuance of ten million dollars of water and
- 19:05Sewer revenue bonds. According to the fiscal Note on the
- 19:10meeting agenda, the issuance of bonds is to advance fund
- 19:14the replacement of water lines throughout the city's water system
- 19:18based on a priority list maintained by the Division of
- 19:22Water Distribution. The project is funded with revenues from an
- 19:27account for water usage savings and the approximate amount of
- 19:32five hundred thousand dollars to six hundred thousand dollars discovered
- 19:37by the Water Loss Team Changing meter initiative. According to
- 19:41the fiscal note, bond funds are scheduled to be repaid
- 19:46in fifteen years. The Ashlom Planning Commission recommended length of
- 19:52stay shall be no more than six months, with the
- 19:55option for a one time extension of an additional six
- 19:59months for recreational vehicles in the city as they're suitable
- 20:04for temporary dwelling. Commissioner Marty Goot raised concerns that this
- 20:09may not be long enough for some who choose to
- 20:12reside in RVs while in the area on a job.
- 20:16Reymer made a motion to table the item until the
- 20:19Commission receives further clarification from the Planning Commission as to
- 20:24why they recommended six months. The Commission approved, upon first reading,
- 20:29an ordinance authorizing the execution of a trust participation Agreement
- 20:35for the Kentucky League of Cities Insurance Services General Insurance
- 20:40Trust for the fiscal year twenty twenty six through twenty
- 20:44seven and payment of property and casualty premiums in the
- 20:49amount of nine hundred and fifty seven thousand, two hundred
- 20:53and sixty one dollars and forty two cents ARA bitchabary.

- 21:07Boyd Fair Jumps to June by Allison Scott for the
- 21:11Daily Independent. The Boyd County Fair is rolling into town
- 21:16early this year with new events and editions. This year's
- 21:21patriotic theme. Fair will celebrate America's two hundred and fiftieth anniversary.
- 21:26Pre fair events are June nineteenth and twentieth. The rest
- 21:31of the fair festivities are slated for June twenty third
- 21:35through the twenty seventh, with the addition of a roller derby,
- 21:39updated accessibility for the Demolition Derby, a community flea market,
- 21:45and more. The fairs president of twelve years, Ellen Keaton,
- 21:50said she and her team are excited for this year's lineup.
- 21:55We're excited about the fair this year. We've taken a
- 21:58big jump from our typical dates that were in August,
- 22:02Keaton said. This year we've had to jump to June
- 22:06due to having a new carnival this year that's going
- 22:09to be joining us, called the Great American Carnival. Their
- 22:13prefair events will feature the quarter Auction Fare, community flea Market,
- 22:19an open livestock show, the Boyd County Open Horse Show,
- 22:24and Tri State MX motor Cross, while the rest of
- 22:28the dates will include fan favorites such as the Demolition
- 22:31Derby and the Rodeo, along with local musicians, the Miss
- 22:36Boyd County Pageants, four h livestock and horse show, and more.
- 22:43We noticed last year that there were people that would
- 22:46come in wheelchairs to watch the demolition derby, and then
- 22:49they would kind of get blocked in because everybody would
- 22:53squeeze in and they couldn't see. Keaton said, this year,
- 22:57we have built a special area with new concrete pad
- 23:01and bleachers that is strictly for people in wheelchairs and walkers.
- 23:06We think this will be a real nice addition. Their
- 23:10newest event is a performance from the Chemical Valley Roller Derby.
- 23:15It's a brand new event where we're going to learn together.
- 23:18They said they've never done a county fair before. Keaton said,
- 23:22they do a lot of schools and things like that,
- 23:24but haven't done a county fair, so we're excited. Attendees
- 23:29will now also be able to pay at the gate
- 23:32by credit debit card. Keaton, who has worked with organizing
- 23:36the fair since two thousand and four, said planning begins
- 23:40as early as when the fare ends each summer. We
- 23:44started in October planning for the improvements to the motorsports
- 23:48area and getting all those pieces in place, Keaton said.
- 23:53Then in January is when the real work starts. That's
- 23:56when we start scheduling acts, making out events, schedule and
- 24:00meeting each month, adding a piece here, a piece there,
- 24:05until we have a full program in place, averaging a
- 24:09cost of seventy five thousand dollars to put the fare on.
- 24:13Keaton said the event wouldn't be possible without the help
- 24:16of their sponsors. One of the fair sponsors, Pathways, will
- 24:20be hosting the family car Load Night, making the normal
- 24:24admission of fifteen dollars per person to twenty five dollars
- 24:28per car load of seven people. I just enjoy the
- 24:32people feeling like we're giving something back to the community,
- 24:36especially on the family Night, Keaton said. Money is really
- 24:41hard right now, and this gives people a chance to
- 24:44come that maybe would not have a chance otherwise. It's
- 24:49just the community feeling of being able to meet up
- 24:52with people that maybe you don't see once or twice
- 24:54a year and spend some quality time with them. For
- 24:59more infirm and to view a full schedule of events,
