- 0:01Speaker 1: Mister New York. Hey, that's marks among seven ten war Well.
- 0:06Speaker 2: Roger Friedman is the great entertainment reporter, and he's got
- 0:10Speaker 2: this wonderful website called Showbiz for one one dot com.
- 0:13Speaker 2: You should check it every day. There's all kinds of
- 0:15Speaker 2: great stories, new stuff all the time. Showbiz for one
- 0:19Speaker 2: one dot com. Roger Friedman, how you doing?
- 0:22Speaker 1: I'm great? How are you this morning?
- 0:24Speaker 2: Very good? Hey? Tell us about Billy Crystal makes a
- 0:28Speaker 2: big announcement yesterday new Broadway showing.
- 0:31Speaker 3: No. Well, he was on Stephen Colbert last night, and uh,
- 0:36Speaker 3: he came to say goodbye to Stephen Colbert because he's
- 0:38Speaker 3: going off the air next month. And the Colbert shows
- 0:41Speaker 3: from the Ed Sullivan Theater where Billy got his start
- 0:45Speaker 3: on Ed Sullivan.
- 0:47Speaker 1: So he came.
- 0:48Speaker 2: He was on it Sullivan.
- 0:49Speaker 1: I guess he was at the very end of the
- 0:51Speaker 1: Ed Sullivan Show.
- 0:52Speaker 2: Yeah, he must have been so young.
- 0:54Speaker 1: He was pretty young.
- 0:55Speaker 2: Wow.
- 0:56Speaker 1: So anyway, he came back.
- 0:58Speaker 3: He came back to do a little stick to celebrate
- 1:04Speaker 3: the fiftieth.
- 1:05Speaker 1: Not the fiftieth, his.
- 1:08Speaker 3: Anniversary of having been there first and now to be last.
- 1:12Speaker 3: And then he announced that he's doing a Broadway show
- 1:14Speaker 3: this fall. It's a one man show. You know, he's
- 1:17Speaker 3: done so many great one man shows, like seven hundred Sundays,
- 1:21Speaker 3: and this one's called eight sixty and it's about everything
- 1:27Speaker 3: that happened to him in LA the last couple of years,
- 1:30Speaker 3: with the fires and all the rest of it. So
- 1:34Speaker 3: it'll be for twelve weeks this fall. You know, it'll
- 1:37Speaker 3: be funny. In fact, the minute the tickets go on sale,
- 1:41Speaker 3: which I think is April twenty eighth, they'll sell out completely,
- 1:45Speaker 3: like in the first hour, because you know, we love him.
- 1:49Speaker 1: It's a real New Yorker.
- 1:51Speaker 2: When they say limited run twelve weeks, that's so in
- 1:54Speaker 2: case it doesn't work, they can close and hopefully it
- 1:56Speaker 2: takes off, and then they extend it, right so it
- 1:59Speaker 2: could run for well.
- 2:00Speaker 3: In his case, it's not gonna you know, it's not
- 2:03Speaker 3: going to not take off. It's going to be it'll
- 2:05Speaker 3: be sold out immediately. So the question is, well he
- 2:08Speaker 3: stay for any time after that, and he may take
- 2:11Speaker 3: a break and then come back, because that's exhausting. You know,
- 2:15Speaker 3: Billy Crystal is not twenty five anymore. Neither am I.
- 2:19Speaker 2: He did seven hundred Sundays for a long time, right.
- 2:23Speaker 3: He did he did, so hopefully he'll do it, and
- 2:28Speaker 3: he seems pretty into it.
- 2:30Speaker 2: I love that. The best was Larry David, who said
- 2:33Speaker 2: it's a dream to be on Broadway. Then he doesn't
- 2:35Speaker 2: show after about six weeks of the same lines every night,
- 2:38Speaker 2: he can't wait to get the hell out of there.
- 2:40Speaker 3: Unfortunately, Larry David's show was a play and it was
- 2:44Speaker 3: no good so and he's not I don't think he
- 2:48Speaker 3: really likes stand up anymore because of Curb Your Enthusiasm.
- 2:51Speaker 1: He's so used to being in the show.
- 2:53Speaker 3: But anyway, Yes, a lot of people find Broadway grueling,
- 2:58Speaker 3: you know, when they get there, they think it'll be
- 3:00Speaker 3: a lot of fun. And this is why you see
- 3:01Speaker 3: a lot of Hollywood stars come into plays, especially around
- 3:04Speaker 3: Tony time, and the play is just for a two
- 3:06Speaker 3: month run or a three month run and that's it.
- 3:09Speaker 3: We have a lot of that going on right now.
- 3:11Speaker 3: But Billy Crystal will be great tonight on Broadway. By
- 3:16Speaker 3: the way, I'm going to see Adrian Brodie in the
- 3:20Speaker 3: Fear of thirteen and he has, you know, won the
- 3:23Speaker 3: Oscar this year just recently, and he has two Oscars
- 3:27Speaker 3: for Best Actor and.
- 3:31Speaker 1: It's going to be really exciting.
- 3:33Speaker 2: Now, there are some people who just go to Broadway
- 3:35Speaker 2: all the time. They got every playbill. They just can't
- 3:37Speaker 2: wait for the next brother they do. And there are
- 3:39Speaker 2: other people that can't sit through those things for as I.
- 3:44Speaker 3: Yeah, some of them are. They're hard to sit there
- 3:46Speaker 3: if they're bad. Yeah. I used to try to go
- 3:49Speaker 3: to every single thing, but of course it's hard to
- 3:52Speaker 3: do anymore. And this has been a busy season right now,
- 3:58Speaker 3: but it's a good season. So and I told you
- 4:01Speaker 3: last week there's a great play that's just opened called
- 4:04Speaker 3: Becky Shaw. There's a lot of terrific stuff going on, so.
- 4:10Speaker 1: That's exciting.
- 4:11Speaker 2: Yeah, that'll be good Sunday night. What the show that opened,
- 4:13Speaker 2: the Titanic Titanic. Yeah, I saw this off Broadway. It's
- 4:21Speaker 2: been around for a while. It's like a parody of Titanic.
- 4:25Speaker 2: It's kind of wild, it's very broad.
- 4:28Speaker 3: Uh, it's a it's a parody of the Titanic movie.
- 4:31Speaker 3: And they have the main character is Celene Dion, So
- 4:35Speaker 3: they have an actress who plays Celine Dion and they
- 4:38Speaker 3: sing you know that song my Heart goes on from
- 4:41Speaker 3: the show from the movie, and they carry very campy.
- 4:45Speaker 3: It's it's not a it's not a like a you know,
- 4:47Speaker 3: a new musical. It's a it's like a Forever Broadway
- 4:51Speaker 3: kind of thing.
- 4:53Speaker 2: It's a great idea comedy version of Titanic.
- 4:56Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, especially if you love Titanic or you
- 5:00Speaker 3: love Selene day Odd.
- 5:01Speaker 1: It's definitely the thing to say. Yeah, it's definitely the
- 5:04Speaker 1: thing to say.
- 5:06Speaker 3: Aren't you excited? Aren't you excited about Madonna? She announced
- 5:10Speaker 3: the new album this morning.
- 5:11Speaker 2: You gotta be honest, I'm not that thrilled. Come on,
- 5:16Speaker 2: it's Madonna. It's on the it's almost sixty eight. Yeah,
- 5:19Speaker 2: it's on the Nursing Home label. It's Madonna. Let me
- 5:24Speaker 2: ask you a question, who the hell's going to play it?
- 5:25Speaker 2: Where's it going to get played?
- 5:28Speaker 3: It's not gonna get played, well, get played in dance.
- 5:30Speaker 3: It's a dance album. It's a sequel to her two
- 5:33Speaker 3: thousand and five album Confessions on a Dance Floor, And
- 5:36Speaker 3: it's going to be, you know, for clubs. It's going
- 5:39Speaker 3: to be for dance clubs. And we'll see if there's
- 5:42Speaker 3: a song for the radio. It's very hard for older
- 5:46Speaker 3: or any older artists, not just Madonna, to get played
- 5:48Speaker 3: on the radio.
- 5:50Speaker 2: You know Madonna, that's forty years ago. If I went
- 5:52Speaker 2: down to Z one hundred and I said I got
- 5:54Speaker 2: the new Madonna album, They're all going to go, who.
- 5:58Speaker 3: I do?
- 5:58Speaker 1: That's a problem. Well on her.
- 6:02Speaker 3: One compromise will be that I think that she's releasing
- 6:06Speaker 3: a single with Sabrina Carpenter, who is the number one
- 6:10Speaker 3: you know Madonna like kid of this generation.
- 6:13Speaker 1: Yeah, and.
- 6:16Speaker 3: Although she's a lot cleaner, but apparently she's got a
- 6:20Speaker 3: do it coming with Sabrina Carpenter, and we may see it.
- 6:24Speaker 3: Are the people out of Coachella in California may hear
- 6:28Speaker 3: it this.
- 6:28Speaker 1: Weekend because Sabrina Carpenter is doing her.
- 6:30Speaker 3: Second show, and I guess Madonna is rumored to be
- 6:34Speaker 3: showing up with her and doing the song, So we'll
- 6:37Speaker 3: hear what it is.
- 6:38Speaker 2: She thinks they're going to play this in clubs, they
- 6:39Speaker 2: would know who the hell she is in these clubs.
- 6:42Speaker 1: Oh, they know who she is in the club.
- 6:44Speaker 2: If Madonna went to a club, the twenty eight year
- 6:46Speaker 2: old bouncer is not going to know who she is.
- 6:49Speaker 1: Well, I don't know, that's that's her world.
- 6:52Speaker 2: Those songs were forty years ago.
- 6:54Speaker 1: Literally, I know, I know, But that's her world.
- 6:58Speaker 3: That's her world, and we're more excited about earth Wind
- 7:01Speaker 3: and Fire coming.
- 7:02Speaker 2: So I love them. You know, I knew them. Fire
- 7:06Speaker 2: was a friend of mine. I'm kidding, what's that?
- 7:09Speaker 3: A Fire was a friend of yours.
- 7:12Speaker 1: Not earth.
- 7:14Speaker 2: Wind I met once, but.
- 7:17Speaker 3: That was the guy who had your job before. No
- 7:23Speaker 3: earth Wind and Fires coming to the Beacon Theater on
- 7:27Speaker 3: June third to open the Tribeca Film Festival. There's a
- 7:31Speaker 3: documentary about them, and then they're going to play on
- 7:34Speaker 3: stage with the Roots, and let me tell you, that
- 7:38Speaker 3: is huge. That's going to be huge. The only problem
- 7:42Speaker 3: is I talked to Yeah, you get all excited earth
- 7:45Speaker 3: Wind and Fires come on, and then these guys come
- 7:47Speaker 3: out with walkers and canes and you realize.
- 7:49Speaker 1: This is wow. They're they're in very good shape.
- 7:53Speaker 3: And you know, I've seen earth Wind and Fire perform
- 7:56Speaker 3: a few times at like, you know, various functions. I
- 7:59Speaker 3: haven't seen the been a full concert in a while.
- 8:01Speaker 3: But they're they're terrific. And I had a long talk
- 8:05Speaker 3: with Verdin White as the leader of the group, the
- 8:08Speaker 3: guy with the tall and skinny, guy with the long hair.
- 8:11Speaker 1: Yeah, and he's amazing.
- 8:13Speaker 3: He's an amazing guitarist and he's an amazing singer, and
- 8:19Speaker 3: they've never been more revved up. In fact, they're going
- 8:22Speaker 3: on tour with Lionel Richie. So then after they do
- 8:26Speaker 3: the speaking show, then they do a Madison Square garden
- 8:28Speaker 3: show I think in July, so they're they're going to
- 8:32Speaker 3: be all over the place and they're hotter than ever.
- 8:35Speaker 3: Everyone loves that song. September, they had a lot of
- 8:38Speaker 3: great songs. They really Yeah, hey, Will, got in a
- 8:42Speaker 3: minute left tell me about There's a big new documentary
- 8:45Speaker 3: on Lauren Michaels.
- 8:46Speaker 2: What's the deal with that?
- 8:47Speaker 3: Oh, it's great, It's opening on Friday. I wrote about
- 8:51Speaker 3: it on Showbiz for on One the other day. They
- 8:54Speaker 3: had a big, great premiere at Alice Tully Hall last week.
- 9:00Speaker 3: And this is the first time that Laurene Michaels in
- 9:05Speaker 3: fifty years really has talked about anything. He never gives
- 9:09Speaker 3: interviews and he didn't want to do this one either,
- 9:12Speaker 3: but he was convinced finally after two years of prodding,
- 9:16Speaker 3: because they had interviewed everybody else from Saturday Night Live,
- 9:18Speaker 3: so then finally he had to give in. And what's
- 9:20Speaker 3: interesting about it is, you know he's seventy nine, and
- 9:23Speaker 3: he's been doing the show for you know, fifty one years,
- 9:26Speaker 3: and he's not going to retire. He's going to stay
- 9:29Speaker 3: there till he can't do it anymore. And he's in
- 9:32Speaker 3: good shape, not wood, and he loves the show, and
- 9:36Speaker 3: you know, he created it, and he's a little concerned
- 9:40Speaker 3: actually that there won't be a show once he's gone.
- 9:42Speaker 3: We thought that maybe he was going to turn over
- 9:45Speaker 3: the reins to someone like Seth Myers or Tina Fey,
- 9:49Speaker 3: but no, no. In fact, I think when he said
- 9:52Speaker 3: that in the film and then he said it to
- 9:54Speaker 3: me again at dinner after the screening, I think, you know,
- 9:59Speaker 3: people like said and Tina and Colin just all went
- 10:02Speaker 3: what because they all thought maybe they would get it.
- 10:06Speaker 3: And now he's like, nope, I'm not leaving.
- 10:08Speaker 2: I'm telling you right now, it'll go off the year.
- 10:10Speaker 2: I'll tell you why. Same reason as Colbert Network TV
- 10:14Speaker 2: viewership is way down. It's cheaper to just run an
- 10:16Speaker 2: old game show there or sell the time. They'll they'll
- 10:20Speaker 2: just put a movie on her.
- 10:21Speaker 1: I don't run reruns of it.
- 10:22Speaker 2: Yeah, Well, problem is that's it's a little topical. But
- 10:26Speaker 2: you can edit your way around that, but.
- 10:28Speaker 3: They run reruns now at ten o'clock on Saturday. Yeah,
- 10:31Speaker 3: it's a are recent but anyway, it's not going anywhere
- 10:35Speaker 3: for the moment. I think he'll, you know, if he's
- 10:38Speaker 3: seventy nine, I think he'll probably From looking at him,
- 10:40Speaker 3: he looks like he's in great shape.
- 10:42Speaker 1: Knock quoiod. It'll go another five years, So he's not
- 10:45Speaker 1: going anywhere.
- 10:45Speaker 2: All right. Well, Roger Freeman, great stuff. Everybody read his website.
- 10:49Speaker 2: There's new stuff all the time. Showbiz for one one
