- 0:02SPEAKER_00: You're listening to Two Guys in Ties.
- 0:06SPEAKER_00: Welcome to Two Guys in Ties.
- 0:08SPEAKER_00: Today I have a different co-host.
- 0:10SPEAKER_00: Very excited to introduce you all to Reagan.
- 0:13SPEAKER_00: Nobody's actually seen her on camera.
- 0:15SPEAKER_00: She's would you say your camera shy?
- 0:17SPEAKER_01: No, the camera loves me.
- 0:20SPEAKER_00: That sounds so humble.
- 0:22SPEAKER_00: Jesus.
- 0:22SPEAKER_00: By the way, she's very humble.
- 0:25SPEAKER_00: Even though you can't see that.
- 0:27SPEAKER_01: It's me, Reagan Douglas.
- 0:29SPEAKER_01: I've made it on camera.
- 0:30SPEAKER_00: Finally, Mitch.
- 0:33SPEAKER_00: I try, I tried to drag her on camera many times.
- 0:36SPEAKER_01: It's Mitch's fault because he's traveling.
- 0:39SPEAKER_00: Mitch is on his baby moon.
- 0:40SPEAKER_00: He I talked to him this morning.
- 0:41SPEAKER_00: He's actually in Lisbon, uh, taking a couple weeks with his baby mama.
- 0:46SPEAKER_02: Baby mama, that's good.
- 0:48SPEAKER_00: And uh and they're having a really, really great time.
- 0:50SPEAKER_00: So we wish him well.
- 0:51SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 0:52SPEAKER_00: Uh, but we decided we're not gonna break the flow.
- 0:54SPEAKER_00: We got a really good flow going, and uh we want to uh on the grind.
- 0:59SPEAKER_00: Yeah, we are on the grind.
- 1:00SPEAKER_00: We want to keep giving information.
- 1:02SPEAKER_00: There is so much to share.
- 1:03SPEAKER_00: It's been a crazy week since our last podcast, and I've gotten so much information from the field.
- 1:10SPEAKER_00: I can't wait to share it.
- 1:11SPEAKER_00: I think we need to have a three-hour podcast.
- 1:12SPEAKER_00: What do you think, Regan?
- 1:14SPEAKER_01: I do not think so.
- 1:15SPEAKER_00: Nobody wants to sit through a three-hour podcast.
- 1:17SPEAKER_01: No, you couldn't even do that yourself.
- 1:19SPEAKER_00: No, I couldn't.
- 1:19SPEAKER_00: I'd have to take 17 bathroom breaks.
- 1:22SPEAKER_00: By the way, I just turned 61 today, and what that means is Happy birthday.
- 1:26SPEAKER_00: Thank you.
- 1:27SPEAKER_00: I this I was on a Zoom earlier and somebody said you're wearing a suit.
- 1:31SPEAKER_00: And I said, This is my birthday suit.
- 1:33SPEAKER_00: And they didn't that that that was the best dad joke so far today.
- 1:36SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that's good.
- 1:37SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:38SPEAKER_00: So, anyway, lots of information, lots of stuff from the field, lots of experiences over the last week that I can't wait to share.
- 1:44SPEAKER_00: But I know Reagan's got so many questions.
- 1:46SPEAKER_00: How did you want to do this today?
- 1:47SPEAKER_00: What was today about?
- 1:48SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
- 1:48SPEAKER_01: I'm thinking maybe we get to know Rod a little bit more.
- 1:52SPEAKER_01: Um people know who you are, maybe, maybe they don't.
- 1:56SPEAKER_01: So I'm just gonna ask you some questions.
- 1:59SPEAKER_01: We can have a conversation about who you are, what you do, a little get to know you better.
- 2:03SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and I think you're posting there.
- 2:05SPEAKER_00: We're posting stuff on social media.
- 2:07SPEAKER_00: I think.
- 2:07SPEAKER_00: Didn't you post that uh clip of you and I flying?
- 2:09SPEAKER_01: Yeah, in the lane.
- 2:11SPEAKER_00: So Reagan actually helped us.
- 2:12SPEAKER_00: We've got some uh real estate stuff we're doing in North Carolina right now, and uh my wife and I went back there uh to do a transaction a couple weeks ago.
- 2:21SPEAKER_00: Reagan came with us to help us on that, and so she caught a quick clip of us in the in the front of my plane flying to North Carolina.
- 2:27SPEAKER_00: That is my happy place.
- 2:29SPEAKER_00: I know we named our boat our happy place, but the plane is really my happy place.
- 2:33SPEAKER_01: You love it.
- 2:34SPEAKER_00: God, I love that thing.
- 2:35SPEAKER_00: And sometimes I get a challenge today.
- 2:36SPEAKER_00: I or the this week flying back from Canada, I actually had a challenge on the plane.
- 2:39SPEAKER_00: Did I tell you about that?
- 2:40SPEAKER_01: No, yeah.
- 2:41SPEAKER_00: My autopilot kicked off at 40,000 feet, and uh my air data computer number one failed.
- 2:48SPEAKER_01: And see, this is your humble flex.
- 2:50SPEAKER_01: I have no idea what you're talking about.
- 2:52SPEAKER_00: And I'm in the front and I'm like, okay, I'm hand flying at 40,000 feet.
- 2:56SPEAKER_00: The plane starts climbing 200 feet, so I got the nose down and I'm like, all right, what are we gonna do?
- 3:00SPEAKER_00: I was able to get the autopilot re-engaged for it with air data computer number two, and then I picked up my sat phone and I called a friend.
- 3:08SPEAKER_00: You always gotta have a friend at Garmin.
- 3:10SPEAKER_00: Let me just say it's good to phone a friend.
- 3:12SPEAKER_00: Yeah, so I call this guy and I'm like, Dave, he always answers.
- 3:15SPEAKER_00: He's like, Who is this?
- 3:16SPEAKER_00: I go, it's Rod, it's my SAT phone.
- 3:18SPEAKER_00: Here's what happened.
- 3:18SPEAKER_00: He goes, I got it.
- 3:19SPEAKER_00: He goes, could have just been a little glitch on a miscompare.
- 3:22SPEAKER_00: So he showed me how to reset the sensor, which I did, and it was bulletproof the rest of the trip.
- 3:27SPEAKER_00: So hopefully it was just one of those little grem gremlins, a Garmin gremlin.
- 3:31SPEAKER_00: And they happen from time to time.
- 3:33SPEAKER_00: But you know, welcome to the world of flying.
- 3:35SPEAKER_01: Well, plane problems are no joke, so you gotta figure it out.
- 3:39SPEAKER_00: But you know, yeah, they happen.
- 3:40SPEAKER_00: You just stay calm.
- 3:41SPEAKER_00: I've had a few of those, and you just stay calm.
- 3:43SPEAKER_01: Good.
- 3:43SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 3:44SPEAKER_00: I had a fire coming out of one of my engines once.
- 3:46SPEAKER_00: Did you know about that?
- 3:47SPEAKER_00: Yeah, got everybody out of the plane, evacuated, and they're like on the ground though.
- 3:51SPEAKER_00: It was on the ground.
- 3:52SPEAKER_00: We were taxiing, and uh and I shut the fire down with a fire, fire um bottle in that plane, and and it turned out to be just a bad fuel control unit, no damage to the engine.
- 4:03SPEAKER_00: That was like three years ago.
- 4:04SPEAKER_00: But I'm like, hey guys, here's the exit, let's go.
- 4:08SPEAKER_00: And everybody's like, How the hell did you stay so calm?
- 4:09SPEAKER_00: I'm like, what's the alternative?
- 4:11SPEAKER_00: You know, you don't want to like go crazy and then you really cause trouble.
- 4:15SPEAKER_01: The one thing you can control is your attitude.
- 4:17SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 4:18SPEAKER_00: Yeah, show up.
- 4:18SPEAKER_00: We just had a Zoom like that.
- 4:20SPEAKER_00: You you sat in the background, you heard it.
- 4:22SPEAKER_00: We had some news, you know, and uh how it's how you respond to it, you know.
- 4:26SPEAKER_00: So news is gonna come.
- 4:28SPEAKER_00: You can't control anything.
- 4:29SPEAKER_00: That's what I look at.
- 4:30SPEAKER_00: You can't control anything.
- 4:31SPEAKER_00: What you can control is how you respond to it.
- 4:33SPEAKER_00: And in flying, they say if it's not catastrophic, like you didn't have uh uh uh catastrophic decompression at 40,000 feet.
- 4:41SPEAKER_00: Well, if that happens, you're grabbing your oxygen mass, you're not wasting any time.
- 4:44SPEAKER_00: Certain things you're not wasting any time.
- 4:46SPEAKER_00: Those are emergency items, you gotta remember them, you gotta do them.
- 4:49SPEAKER_00: If it's not that, the number one rule, and this is what they teach fighter pilots, count to 10.
- 4:55SPEAKER_00: Slow it down.
- 4:56SPEAKER_00: You're likely to do something that's going to create a catastrophic problem if you react too quickly.
- 5:02SPEAKER_00: So this is going off the rails, isn't it, Reagan?
- 5:05SPEAKER_00: You were not planning on talking about this.
- 5:07SPEAKER_00: She's on it out.
- 5:08SPEAKER_00: She she falls asleep in my plane.
- 5:11SPEAKER_01: I wish.
- 5:11SPEAKER_01: I can't.
- 5:12SPEAKER_01: I'm sitting in the front talking to you.
- 5:13SPEAKER_00: I know, I keep her awake.
- 5:14SPEAKER_00: But if she was in the back, she'd be asleep in the back.
- 5:16SPEAKER_01: I would be asleep in the back, yes.
- 5:17SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 5:18SPEAKER_00: All right.
- 5:18SPEAKER_00: How do you want to play this?
- 5:19SPEAKER_00: I want to share a little news from the field.
- 5:21SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 5:21SPEAKER_00: But let's do that in in between all this.
- 5:23SPEAKER_01: Why don't we why don't we just start with it's your birthday today?
- 5:28SPEAKER_01: What is one thing that you hope for this year?
- 5:32SPEAKER_00: Oh, great, great question.
- 5:33SPEAKER_01: In your 61st year of living.
- 5:36SPEAKER_00: 62nd.
- 5:38SPEAKER_00: I've lived 61 years.
- 5:39SPEAKER_00: I'm 61 today.
- 5:41SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 5:41SPEAKER_00: I feel like an old motherfucker.
- 5:43SPEAKER_00: 62 years of living living.
- 5:45SPEAKER_00: I got a text from a buddy of mine.
- 5:46SPEAKER_00: He goes, Welcome to the 61 Club.
- 5:48SPEAKER_00: I said, Where's my hair?
- 5:49SPEAKER_00: He lost his hair about 10 years ago.
- 5:51SPEAKER_00: So I feel a little better.
- 5:52SPEAKER_00: Um now, you know what?
- 5:54SPEAKER_00: Uh joy.
- 5:55SPEAKER_00: For me, it's always joy.
- 5:56SPEAKER_00: And uh, we got another grandbaby on the way, so that'll be number two.
- 6:00SPEAKER_00: And uh I love what I'm doing.
- 6:02SPEAKER_00: I mean, would you say I'm working?
- 6:04SPEAKER_00: How long have you been at work together now?
- 6:06SPEAKER_00: I mean you've worked at our company.
- 6:08SPEAKER_00: How long have you you worked at the company for how long?
- 6:10SPEAKER_00: Four years?
- 6:11SPEAKER_01: Four years, including my internship.
- 6:12SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 6:13SPEAKER_01: We worked together for almost two years.
- 6:16SPEAKER_00: Directly, but you were also in the office working with me probably another year and a half.
- 6:20SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 6:20SPEAKER_00: So three and a half years?
- 6:22SPEAKER_00: Is that about?
- 6:23SPEAKER_00: Or three years?
- 6:23SPEAKER_00: Three years.
- 6:24SPEAKER_00: Because you graduated in May of 23.
- 6:27SPEAKER_00: Okay, so three years.
- 6:29SPEAKER_00: Um would you say I'm working harder than I've ever worked that you've seen?
- 6:32SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I mean it's your birthday and we're doing this.
- 6:35SPEAKER_00: I'm wearing a suit on my birthday.
- 6:37SPEAKER_00: And it's a Friday.
- 6:38SPEAKER_00: It's crazy.
- 6:39SPEAKER_01: I know.
- 6:39SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's a Friday.
- 6:41SPEAKER_00: Yeah, no, but I'm loving it.
- 6:43SPEAKER_00: I am engaged.
- 6:44SPEAKER_00: I was in Canada this week.
- 6:46SPEAKER_00: We were in Michigan last week on another business I'm on the board of.
- 6:50SPEAKER_00: Uh, prior to that, North Carolina, prior to that, New York, prior to that, Chicago, Minnesota, been to Minnesota twice this summer.
- 6:57SPEAKER_00: It's crazy.
- 6:58SPEAKER_00: Lots of travel.
- 7:00SPEAKER_00: Um, but things are cooking, and I am more engaged than ever.
- 7:03SPEAKER_00: And we're bringing in great people.
- 7:05SPEAKER_00: I just love working with great people.
- 7:07SPEAKER_00: You know what I love?
- 7:08SPEAKER_00: We've got our company set up.
- 7:09SPEAKER_00: We got we got presence of each of our businesses.
- 7:12SPEAKER_00: I get to kind of help them be successful.
- 7:14SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 7:15SPEAKER_00: And so that gives me a ton of energy.
- 7:17SPEAKER_00: And my wife is in her happy place.
- 7:18SPEAKER_00: She's being a grandma and she's loving, taking care of our grandkids, grandkids so far.
- 7:23SPEAKER_00: Help he's she's with him like five days a week.
- 7:25SPEAKER_00: So it kind of frees me up to do things, you know, and and get out there.
- 7:28SPEAKER_00: And I don't feel like I'm missing out with my kids.
- 7:31SPEAKER_00: Nobody's living at home.
- 7:32SPEAKER_00: No, you know.
- 7:33SPEAKER_00: So um, so I'm excited.
- 7:35SPEAKER_00: I want to keep more of that going.
- 7:36SPEAKER_00: I want to have some more good experiences like that.
- 7:39SPEAKER_00: Um we're marrying off Maddie in another month and a half.
- 7:42SPEAKER_00: Actually, a month.
- 7:43SPEAKER_01: No, a month, yeah.
- 7:43SPEAKER_00: Jeez, five weeks.
- 7:45SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 7:45SPEAKER_00: Reagan's in that wedding, by the way.
- 7:46SPEAKER_01: I'm in the wedding.
- 7:47SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 7:48SPEAKER_00: So um, but yeah, really great things happening.
- 7:51SPEAKER_01: I don't think you'll ever stop working.
- 7:53SPEAKER_00: No, I don't think I can.
- 7:54SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 7:54SPEAKER_00: It's my it's my hobby.
- 7:56SPEAKER_00: I actually um met with the dean at UC Riverside Business School and a couple of folks there a couple weeks ago, and I said, I'd love to teach a class, but I don't want to have to create the curriculum.
- 8:07SPEAKER_00: And I don't want to have to like grade papers, and I don't I just want to go there and speak to people and give them, you know, some some level of wisdom.
- 8:13SPEAKER_01: You just want to talk, and that is why we have this podcast.
- 8:17SPEAKER_00: I told Reagan, I go, when we do this podcast, I just want to yell at people.
- 8:21SPEAKER_00: I just want to tell them, stop doing this.
- 8:23SPEAKER_00: Yeah, there's so many things.
- 8:24SPEAKER_00: I have a few stop doings, by the way, picked up from this week.
- 8:27SPEAKER_01: Going off of that, um, you're 61.
- 8:30SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 8:30SPEAKER_01: I'm 25.
- 8:31SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 8:32SPEAKER_01: What is something?
- 8:33SPEAKER_01: What is a piece of advice that you would give your 25-year-old self?
- 8:36SPEAKER_00: Build relationships and be hard on yourself when you judge how you've built that relationship.
- 8:41SPEAKER_00: And I'm gonna tell you what that means.
- 8:43SPEAKER_00: I got off of Zoom this morning with another company I'm on the board with.
- 8:46SPEAKER_00: And we're it's a re it's a product, it's a consumer product, and we're talking about penetrating retail channels like Nordstrom and Sephora and all these people.
- 8:54SPEAKER_00: And they're like, Well, we have a relationship with them.
- 8:57SPEAKER_00: I said, Well, how many times have you met him?
- 8:58SPEAKER_00: Well, we've never met him, we've only done this on Zoom.
- 9:00SPEAKER_00: I'm like, that's not a relationship.
- 9:02SPEAKER_00: Get in a plane, go out and see them, go break bread, go build a relationship.
- 9:07SPEAKER_00: And I'll give you an example.
- 9:08SPEAKER_00: We just got into TikTok shop in this business.
- 9:11SPEAKER_00: It took us a year, but we went to a show in Vegas and we saw that they were going to be displaying there.
- 9:16SPEAKER_00: We got to that show, the show opened at 10 o'clock, and I said, We're standing in front of the line at 9:30 to get into the exhibits.
- 9:23SPEAKER_00: And the first place we're going is TikTok shop.
- 9:25SPEAKER_00: And I dragged these people there.
- 9:26SPEAKER_00: They've never done this before.
- 9:28SPEAKER_00: I said, This is how you actually make things happen.
- 9:30SPEAKER_00: It's through relationships.
- 9:32SPEAKER_00: We went right over there and we told them, guys, we've been struggling for a year.
- 9:35SPEAKER_00: And they're like, Oh, we know your brand.
- 9:37SPEAKER_00: You know, one person came from Amazon.
- 9:38SPEAKER_00: She's like, I've sold your brand for 10 years.
- 9:40SPEAKER_00: I know your brand really well.
- 9:41SPEAKER_00: I go, we've been trying for a year.
- 9:43SPEAKER_00: One day we got almost every obstacle removed.
- 9:46SPEAKER_00: And then over the course of the next month, we had another meeting with them in New York, face to face, and we got it done.
- 9:53SPEAKER_00: What took us a year because we were doing things over Zoom or email or something like that.
- 9:58SPEAKER_00: We got done in a month because we built personal relationships.
- 10:01SPEAKER_00: So, Reagan, personal relationships.
- 10:04SPEAKER_00: I had a coach tell me many years ago, you should have a top 20 list.
- 10:08SPEAKER_00: And those are the people that you need to know that need to know you really well.
- 10:12SPEAKER_00: And it's not just who you know, it's who knows you and what they say about you, right?
- 10:18SPEAKER_00: And you have to build relationships.
- 10:20SPEAKER_00: And in order to do that, that's a process.
- 10:23SPEAKER_00: That's planting a seed, that's watering it, that's fertilizing it, that's nurturing it.
- 10:27SPEAKER_00: And so that means finding opportunities.
- 10:29SPEAKER_00: Take coal and get together with somebody else and their spouse for dinner.
- 10:33SPEAKER_00: Um, go to events, do things with those people to build relationships because relationships are the key to success.
- 10:40SPEAKER_00: I firmly believe that.
- 10:41SPEAKER_01: That's good to know.
- 10:41SPEAKER_01: That's good advice.
- 10:43SPEAKER_00: That's my advice to a 25-year-old from uh you called me 62 a minute ago.
- 10:48SPEAKER_01: I said 61.
- 10:49SPEAKER_00: I am in my 62nd year, yes, that's true.
- 10:52SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 10:52SPEAKER_01: Okay, that's good.
- 10:53SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 10:54SPEAKER_01: Um let's see.
- 10:55SPEAKER_00: What do you want to know about me, Reagan?
- 10:57SPEAKER_01: If you if you were a real CEO, what industry would you be in?
- 11:03SPEAKER_00: If I was a real CEO.
- 11:05SPEAKER_00: By the way, CEO of like five companies, but okay.
- 11:10SPEAKER_01: No, I'm kidding.
- 11:10SPEAKER_01: That's a trend on TikTok.
- 11:12SPEAKER_00: No.
- 11:12SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 11:12SPEAKER_00: Uh, what industry would I be in?
- 11:14SPEAKER_01: No, it's not a real question.
- 11:16SPEAKER_00: No, it's not?
- 11:16SPEAKER_01: No, that was a trend.
- 11:18SPEAKER_01: No, I was kidding.
- 11:21SPEAKER_00: I bought that hook line and sinker, man.
- 11:24SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 11:24SPEAKER_01: Um, for real.
- 11:26SPEAKER_00: Can I blame that on Jell Lang?
- 11:27SPEAKER_01: For real.
- 11:28SPEAKER_01: No, you can't.
- 11:29SPEAKER_01: That's getting posted.
- 11:31SPEAKER_00: This is Reagan making fun of me.
- 11:32SPEAKER_00: That's what two guys in Ties has turned into Reagan making fun of me.
- 11:35SPEAKER_01: No, it's a Gen Z working with uh, what are you?
- 11:38SPEAKER_01: Gen.
- 11:39SPEAKER_00: Uh I am Gen X, yes.
- 11:40SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 11:40SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 11:41SPEAKER_00: That's what it is.
- 11:41SPEAKER_00: I am like two years behind baby boomers.
- 11:43SPEAKER_01: Because I know Maddie and Tatum and the other girls are gonna think this is funny.
- 11:47SPEAKER_00: Yeah, thank you.
- 11:48SPEAKER_00: You're doing it.
- 11:49SPEAKER_01: But I'm I'm um opening up our audience.
- 11:52SPEAKER_00: Just make sure you get Mitch.
- 11:53SPEAKER_01: I'm opening up our audience.
- 11:55SPEAKER_01: Okay, what is a big what is the biggest mistake that you see young career professionals make?
- 12:02SPEAKER_00: I two things.
- 12:03SPEAKER_00: Number one, I don't think they operate as if they're the CEO of their careers.
- 12:07SPEAKER_00: And it it's not full stop.
- 12:09SPEAKER_00: I will tell you that um one of the gals in our marketing department came to me a couple weeks ago.
- 12:13SPEAKER_00: She also came to her manager, the head of our marketing department, probably a month ago and said, Hey, I want to talk about my career path.
- 12:21SPEAKER_00: And I just want to share with you kind of how I think and I want to know what you're thinking and what opportunities there are for growth because I really want to grow.
- 12:29SPEAKER_00: She's early in her career.
- 12:30SPEAKER_00: Do you know how many people do that, Reagan?
- 12:33SPEAKER_00: Almost none.
- 12:34SPEAKER_00: Almost none act as the CEO of their career.
- 12:37SPEAKER_00: And so by engaging your boss in your career goals and also your life goals, this is the way this is the kind of life I want to live.
- 12:45SPEAKER_00: Now you've in engaged them and you've enrolled them in helping you live your best life as long as you deliver the results for them, right?
- 12:54SPEAKER_00: Everybody's happy.
- 12:55SPEAKER_00: So she says, Listen, I'm gonna do X, Y, and Z for you.
- 12:58SPEAKER_00: These are the outcomes that I'm gonna commit to deliver for you.
- 13:01SPEAKER_00: I want to know what's in it for me too.
- 13:03SPEAKER_00: And by the way, that is really valid.
- 13:05SPEAKER_00: Everybody thinks about it, but nobody talks about it.
- 13:08SPEAKER_01: Do you think this is easier to do in a smaller company though?
- 13:10SPEAKER_01: Like imagine working for a big company.
- 13:12SPEAKER_01: I think you're telling your boss what your life goals are.
- 13:15SPEAKER_01: Do they care?
- 13:16SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 13:17SPEAKER_00: They do, yes.
- 13:18SPEAKER_00: Bosses are people.
- 13:19SPEAKER_00: I don't care if you're 10,000 people or you or if you're 10 people, they're people, they have their own goals too.
- 13:25SPEAKER_00: Guess how your boss makes their goals?
- 13:26SPEAKER_00: How do I make my goals?
- 13:29SPEAKER_00: See, I'm throwing it back on Reagan.
- 13:30SPEAKER_00: How do I make my goals?
- 13:32SPEAKER_00: Yeah, how do I think about my goals?
- 13:34SPEAKER_00: What do you think my goals are for our businesses?
- 13:37SPEAKER_00: I just pick one.
- 13:38SPEAKER_00: Well, revenue, probably, right?
- 13:39SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 13:40SPEAKER_01: Profit, right?
- 13:41SPEAKER_00: So how do I do that?
- 13:42SPEAKER_00: Am I out selling for every single one of my businesses?
- 13:45SPEAKER_01: No.
- 13:46SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 13:46SPEAKER_00: Do I have people doing it?
- 13:47SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 13:48SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 13:49SPEAKER_00: How do I make my goals through other people, right?
- 13:51SPEAKER_00: So I have this belief, Reagan.
- 13:53SPEAKER_00: I know you hate it, but you're probably gonna hate it.
- 13:55SPEAKER_00: Have you heard this in my Zig Ziggler quote?
- 13:58SPEAKER_01: Maybe, actually, I probably have.
- 14:00SPEAKER_00: I can have everything I want in life if I just help enough people get what they want.
- 14:05SPEAKER_00: If I help enough other people get what they want, right?
- 14:07SPEAKER_00: I can have everything I want in life.
- 14:09SPEAKER_00: I have to make my goals through other people.
- 14:11SPEAKER_00: Every boss has to make their goals through their teams.
- 14:15SPEAKER_00: So by you sharing what you're after and finding out what they're after and making sure those things click right and they work, you're just being very overt with it.
- 14:25SPEAKER_00: And that's a smart thing to do because then nobody's guessing.
- 14:28SPEAKER_00: How often do I ask you, are you happy?
- 14:31SPEAKER_01: A lot.
- 14:32SPEAKER_00: How often?
- 14:33SPEAKER_00: More than you like?
- 14:34SPEAKER_00: She's rolling her eyes right now.
- 14:35SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 14:36SPEAKER_01: At least one time a week.
- 14:37SPEAKER_00: One time a week.
- 14:38SPEAKER_00: Are you happy?
- 14:39SPEAKER_00: And are you engaged?
- 14:40SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 14:40SPEAKER_00: Are you enjoying it?
- 14:41SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 14:42SPEAKER_00: Are you enjoying your job?
- 14:43SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 14:43SPEAKER_00: I ask you that.
- 14:44SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, I'm just all the time.
- 14:46SPEAKER_00: No, I'm not.
- 14:47SPEAKER_00: I'm not asking you right now, but how I I ask that question, right?
- 14:50SPEAKER_00: Because I know that for me to have what I want, I need you to have what you want.
- 14:55SPEAKER_00: And if there's something that you're not getting, or something that you're doing that's taking joy away from you, let's fix it.
- 15:01SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 15:01SPEAKER_00: You know, because I'm getting what I want and I want that to continue.
- 15:04SPEAKER_01: So I think Have you always had that mindset?
- 15:07SPEAKER_00: No.
- 15:08SPEAKER_00: You know when I that's a great question.
- 15:10SPEAKER_00: You know when I learned that?
- 15:11SPEAKER_00: Before I got into executive search, I was head of sales and marketing of a computer security company.
- 15:16SPEAKER_00: I reported to the CEO, who was actually a really good friend.
- 15:19SPEAKER_00: And when I ended up leaving the company, I actually went on the board.
- 15:22SPEAKER_00: And um I made a decision six months before I left that I was gonna leave.
- 15:28SPEAKER_00: I wasn't getting what I wanted out of it.
- 15:30SPEAKER_00: I don't think he was running the company the way that I would have run it.
- 15:33SPEAKER_00: It was his kind of first time doing it.
- 15:36SPEAKER_00: Um and when I made a decision to leave, I started exploring things and I I came across Executive Search.
- 15:42SPEAKER_00: I kept my job.
- 15:43SPEAKER_00: I worked my tail off.
- 15:45SPEAKER_00: We had a really good year.
- 15:46SPEAKER_01: How do you just come across Executive Search?
- 15:48SPEAKER_00: I didn't.
- 15:48SPEAKER_00: I mean, I great question.
- 15:50SPEAKER_00: I was thinking about my next thing, and we're having a barbecue in our backyard with our neighbors, and uh and the wife worked for a pretty good sized company that was a spinoff of Deloitte in Costa Mesa, and she said, We just bought an executive search firm in our business from Chicago, but they're looking at expanding their Southern California operation.
- 16:08SPEAKER_00: They only have two guys.
- 16:09SPEAKER_00: Let me get you an interview.
- 16:10SPEAKER_00: And so that's what started me on this journey.
- 16:13SPEAKER_00: And so I went and explored it and I did all that, and I made my decision.
- 16:17SPEAKER_00: And six months later, I walked into his office and said, Hey, I'm gonna leave the company.
- 16:22SPEAKER_00: And by the way, before I was gonna leave, I thought, gosh, if I was running this company, I had run a couple companies before that.
- 16:29SPEAKER_00: If I was running this company, I would do things differently.
- 16:31SPEAKER_00: I love him, he was a great guy, but we just weren't holding people accountable, we just weren't winning our Super Bowl.
- 16:38SPEAKER_00: And it just, you know, there were too many variables out of my control, and I didn't like that.
- 16:42SPEAKER_00: And so I decided to leave.
- 16:44SPEAKER_00: But what he told me when I said, Hey, I'm leaving, he said, Why don't I make you president?
- 16:48SPEAKER_00: I'll move out of the company, I'll take an office somewhere else, you run the business.
- 16:52SPEAKER_00: And I thought, God, why didn't I bring that up six months ago?
- 16:56SPEAKER_00: You know, I could have done that, but I didn't bring it up.
- 16:59SPEAKER_00: And it's like, I have a coach who says, What would you do if you weren't afraid?
- 17:04SPEAKER_00: Right?
- 17:04SPEAKER_00: If you weren't afraid, look at all the things you would do.
- 17:07SPEAKER_00: You would speak up about these things.
- 17:09SPEAKER_00: And at that point, I was already gone.
- 17:11SPEAKER_00: I had already visualized myself in executive search, and I love this business.
- 17:15SPEAKER_00: I'm really glad I did this.
- 17:16SPEAKER_00: However, I could have had a different path.
- 17:20SPEAKER_00: Who knows what that path would have been had I spoken up.
- 17:22SPEAKER_00: So, people, speak up.
- 17:25SPEAKER_00: Absolutely speak up and enroll your bosses in your life journey.
- 17:29SPEAKER_00: It's really important.
- 17:31SPEAKER_01: Do you think you're enrolled in my life journey?
- 17:34SPEAKER_00: I think so.
- 17:35SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 17:35SPEAKER_00: You talked to me about your goal, having kids, and you know, Cole just getting his dream job and where that goes and kind of his trajectory.
- 17:43SPEAKER_00: And yeah, I think so.
- 17:44SPEAKER_00: Do you think I am?
- 17:45SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I think you are.
- 17:46SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 17:46SPEAKER_00: I want to be.
- 17:47SPEAKER_00: Yeah, you are should I enroll myself more?
- 17:49SPEAKER_00: No.
- 17:49SPEAKER_00: Should I ask you more often?
- 17:51SPEAKER_01: No, thank you.
- 17:52SPEAKER_00: Get out of my life.
- 17:54SPEAKER_00: I think I I try to be enrolled in all my key people's um life journeys.
- 17:59SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and I think that makes a big difference, honestly.
- 18:02SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 18:02SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah, I do too.
- 18:03SPEAKER_00: By the way, it's fun.
- 18:04SPEAKER_00: I mean, it's all about people.
- 18:06SPEAKER_00: We might have 60, 70, 80, 100 people, depending on the time of year or whatever, but it's just people.
- 18:12SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 18:13SPEAKER_01: What else you got?
- 18:15SPEAKER_01: Let's see.
- 18:15SPEAKER_01: Let me look at my list of questions.
- 18:17SPEAKER_00: Come on, Reagan.
- 18:18SPEAKER_00: Dead air.
- 18:20SPEAKER_00: Okay, I'm I'm gonna fill the dead air.
- 18:22SPEAKER_00: All right.
- 18:23SPEAKER_01: Okay, everyone.
- 18:24SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 18:24SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 18:26SPEAKER_01: Have you always been entrepreneurial?
- 18:28SPEAKER_01: And can you think back to your childhood of you coming up with companies and ideas, maybe little businesses you've done in elementary school, maybe high school?
- 18:38SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 18:38SPEAKER_01: Focus through your childhood.
- 18:40SPEAKER_00: I always have.
- 18:41SPEAKER_00: Always have done it.
- 18:42SPEAKER_00: Um I had um my if so, first of all, I learned business from the dinner table, right?
- 18:47SPEAKER_00: My dad um grew up in sales and then ultimately ran a company and uh he would talk about things at the dinner table.
- 18:54SPEAKER_00: And so I learned from that.
- 18:55SPEAKER_00: My first business, and I had business cards, his his assistant printed them out on paper and then you know, paper cut them for me, and I would hand them out to the neighbors.
- 19:04SPEAKER_00: I had a weeding and vacation service.
- 19:06SPEAKER_00: So back then, they didn't have automatic weeding.
- 19:10SPEAKER_00: Like you have weeds.
- 19:11SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 19:11SPEAKER_00: Not not weed.
- 19:13SPEAKER_00: What do you?
- 19:14SPEAKER_00: I'm I'm not a pot smoker.
- 19:16SPEAKER_00: I've tried it.
- 19:18SPEAKER_00: I didn't inhale.
- 19:19SPEAKER_00: Anyway, uh, that's for everybody my age.
- 19:22SPEAKER_00: Y'all you're all laughing now.
- 19:23SPEAKER_00: Um, no, weeding.
- 19:25SPEAKER_00: So weeds, you know, they come up and and all that.
- 19:27SPEAKER_00: So people back then would kind of take care of their own lawns.
- 19:29SPEAKER_00: You didn't have you know big gardening companies and all that driving around all the time.
- 19:33SPEAKER_00: And the blow and go guys, right?
- 19:35SPEAKER_00: We didn't have any of that.
- 19:36SPEAKER_00: So, and then if they took off um for vacation, we didn't have most people didn't have automatic sprinkler systems back then.
- 19:44SPEAKER_00: This was literally the 70s and early 80s, yeah, late, late 70s actually.
- 19:49SPEAKER_00: And so I printed these cards and I'd go and get paid a couple bucks an hour, and I hired a buddy to work for me, and I paid him less like half of what I was charging.
- 19:57SPEAKER_01: Oh wow, you had employees.
- 19:58SPEAKER_01: Oh, I had a 10 goal.
- 20:00SPEAKER_00: Yeah, no, I wasn't 10, I was like 13.
- 20:03SPEAKER_00: But um, yeah, I think it was like 78, 79, something like that.
- 20:06SPEAKER_00: But uh yeah, I did that.
- 20:08SPEAKER_00: And then, you know, I've I've always played tennis my whole life, and I played um in high school, I played tournaments and all that.
- 20:15SPEAKER_00: So I got a tennis stringing machine and I started stringing people's rackets.
- 20:18SPEAKER_00: So I strung not only my own, but all the guys on my team.
- 20:21SPEAKER_01: And how much did you charge for that?
- 20:23SPEAKER_00: Probably 10 bucks at the time.
- 20:24SPEAKER_00: It wasn't much.
- 20:25SPEAKER_00: Yeah, you know, so everything was so cheap back then.
- 20:28SPEAKER_00: It was crazy.
- 20:29SPEAKER_00: Um, I had a paper route, I employed my sister, we doubled our route because I ended up being with her, I was able to take on a bigger route.
- 20:36SPEAKER_00: So I've always had ways of making money.
- 20:39SPEAKER_00: And my parents taught me early on if you want something, you're gonna have to earn it.
- 20:42SPEAKER_00: Yeah, we're not giving you money, so you're gonna have to go get it.
- 20:45SPEAKER_00: We never got an allowance.
- 20:46SPEAKER_00: Like my friends would get an allowance.
- 20:47SPEAKER_00: Oh, they're getting five bucks a week.
- 20:48SPEAKER_00: It's like, yeah, we don't do that.
- 20:50SPEAKER_00: That's you waking up in the morning and you know, making your own bed.
- 20:52SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I've never got an allowance.
- 20:54SPEAKER_00: You never got that?
- 20:55SPEAKER_02: No.
- 20:55SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 20:56SPEAKER_00: See, look at you, you got great work ethic now.
- 20:58SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 20:59SPEAKER_00: By the way, Reagan doesn't do anything without charging me.
- 21:02SPEAKER_00: So she knows how to make money.
- 21:04SPEAKER_00: She knows.
- 21:05SPEAKER_00: I know.
- 21:05SPEAKER_00: By the way, I'm I'm good with that because I grew up the same way.
- 21:12SPEAKER_00: 10 million views.
- 21:15SPEAKER_01: 10 million?
- 21:16SPEAKER_00: 10 million.
- 21:16SPEAKER_00: So you're saying there's a chance.
- 21:18SPEAKER_00: Maybe not 10 million, but yes.
- 21:22SPEAKER_00: Yeah, anyway.
- 21:23SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 21:23SPEAKER_00: No, so much.
- 21:25SPEAKER_00: But yes, we do things and we know how to make money.
- 21:27SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 21:27SPEAKER_00: I think making money is a really good skill because I don't rely on other people to pay me.
- 21:31SPEAKER_00: So you ask me this question: have you always been entrepreneurial?
- 21:34SPEAKER_00: I had like real jobs out of college.
- 21:37SPEAKER_00: I worked for Citibank, biggest bank in the country at the time in New York.
- 21:41SPEAKER_01: Did you have a job in college?
- 21:42SPEAKER_00: Yeah, oh, every every year?
- 21:45SPEAKER_00: I had a job before I started college in college.
- 21:47SPEAKER_00: I got to UCLA and the second day there, three days before school started, I got a call a job in the Cooperage, which is um a restaurant area.
- 21:57SPEAKER_00: We had pizza, taco stuff.
- 21:58SPEAKER_00: I was a bus boy.
- 21:59SPEAKER_00: My Goal was to get into the pizza place.
- 22:02SPEAKER_00: So I bust first, then I got into the pizza place and I was making pizzas.
- 22:06SPEAKER_00: I was that guy spinning the spinning the pies.
- 22:09SPEAKER_00: And then I got a job delivering pizzas, which was amazing because I'm like, yes, I'm gonna get tips.
- 22:13SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 22:14SPEAKER_00: Do you know how much college students tip?
- 22:16SPEAKER_01: Nothing.
- 22:17SPEAKER_00: Nothing.
- 22:17SPEAKER_00: They're the cheapest bastards out there.
- 22:19SPEAKER_00: Jeez.
- 22:20SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and and by the way, the cars I drove, they gave us a car to drive.
- 22:24SPEAKER_00: It had AM radio only.
- 22:26SPEAKER_00: So I'm listening to news.
- 22:28SPEAKER_00: I mean, it was awful.
- 22:29SPEAKER_00: But it was fun.
- 22:31SPEAKER_00: And I always had something.
- 22:32SPEAKER_00: So I never did not work when I was at UCLA.
- 22:35SPEAKER_01: After Pizza, where were you?
- 22:36SPEAKER_00: Uh, let's see.
- 22:37SPEAKER_00: I did that for a year.
- 22:39SPEAKER_00: My next year, I was a messenger for the alumni department, and I worked at the alumni department.
- 22:44SPEAKER_00: So I was also driving a car around, delivering mail.
- 22:47SPEAKER_00: I remember one of the guys, we had a career guy who was a full-time person, and we had three part-time people like me.
- 22:53SPEAKER_00: And um, he would tell me, pull me aside once, he goes, You're going too fast on the route.
- 22:57SPEAKER_00: I said, Why?
- 22:58SPEAKER_00: He goes, You're making us look bad.
- 23:00SPEAKER_00: You got to go slower.
- 23:01SPEAKER_00: And I'm like, I don't get that.
- 23:02SPEAKER_00: I can do this route in like an hour.
- 23:04SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 23:05SPEAKER_00: He goes, it's already spec'd for three.
- 23:07SPEAKER_00: Go take a break, have a soda, do and I'm like, Are you shitting me?
- 23:12SPEAKER_00: This is like I literally was working for the government, right?
- 23:14SPEAKER_00: UCLA is your you get your check from UCLA, but it's the state of California.
- 23:18SPEAKER_00: I'm like, okay, this is crazy.
- 23:20SPEAKER_00: So I've seen that inefficiency in business.
- 23:23SPEAKER_00: I'm like, I'm gonna, these are the people I want to compete with, yeah, right?
- 23:26SPEAKER_00: When people have that attitude.
- 23:28SPEAKER_00: I've never had that attitude.
- 23:29SPEAKER_00: So I worked at UCLA, I had an internship with a real estate development company that was fun.
- 23:35SPEAKER_00: Then I got an internship with Johnson Johnson one summer as a sales rep, killed it, had a great time, made money, went to school in London first semester, um, came back, worked with the athletic department at UCLA, which is cool because we had world-class athletics.
- 23:51SPEAKER_00: Terry Donahue was a football coach.
- 23:53SPEAKER_00: We didn't have great basketball at the time, except we had Reggie Miller, who was amazing.
- 23:58SPEAKER_00: Um, but you see these guys walking in and out, and I answered the phone.
- 24:01SPEAKER_00: I was a switchboard guy.
- 24:02SPEAKER_00: And I always had time on my hands.
- 24:04SPEAKER_00: And the the football coach would come to me and say, Listen, I need to get these um stats from these high school football players around the country.
- 24:11SPEAKER_00: I want you to call their high schools and I want you to get these four numbers for me.
- 24:15SPEAKER_00: And, you know, like how fast they run a 40 and different things like that.
- 24:19SPEAKER_00: So I would get these stats in my spare time when I wasn't answering the phone because I had capacity.
- 24:24SPEAKER_00: You know, I'll never forget the uh space shuttle.
- 24:26SPEAKER_01: Did you get paid for that too?
- 24:27SPEAKER_00: I got paid.
- 24:28SPEAKER_00: Oh, I always got paid.
- 24:29SPEAKER_00: I didn't work for free, Reagan.
- 24:31SPEAKER_00: No working for free here.
- 24:32SPEAKER_00: But I remember when I was there, there was a little news thing going on um behind us and uh the space shuttle challenger crash when I was sitting there working at uh at uh the um athletic department.
- 24:44SPEAKER_00: That was real sad.
- 24:45SPEAKER_00: I'll never there's certain things that you remember where you were when that happened, and that's one of those things.
- 24:50SPEAKER_00: But after college, I got an offer from JJ.
- 24:52SPEAKER_00: I worked two summers for them, had a great time, really great experience.
- 24:56SPEAKER_00: But I decided I want to go into banking and I wanted to move to New York.
- 24:59SPEAKER_00: So I got a job with Citibank.
- 25:01SPEAKER_00: I was a financial analyst, went through training, Long Island City, really dumpy little building.
- 25:05SPEAKER_00: Now it's a 40-story building.
- 25:07SPEAKER_00: They they've dressed the place up a bit.
- 25:09SPEAKER_00: But I worked in the headquarters and it was my dream to work in Manhattan.
- 25:12SPEAKER_00: Had a great apartment with some great friends, one of who called me this morning.
- 25:16SPEAKER_00: Um, and um in six months in, they asked me to move to Houston and they needed somebody down there and they bribed me to go.
- 25:25SPEAKER_00: They gave me$5,000 to go.
- 25:27SPEAKER_02: Wow.
- 25:27SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that was a lot of money back then.
- 25:29SPEAKER_00: And uh, so I said, okay, I'll do it.
- 25:32SPEAKER_00: My boss was great.
- 25:32SPEAKER_00: She goes, I'm gonna get you back to New York once a month, but you're gonna stay on the company dime, you'll stay in a hotel, and we'll make sure that you maintain your relationships with everybody here, which was great.
- 25:40SPEAKER_00: And to this day, I still have some relationships.
- 25:42SPEAKER_00: But that's where I learned to fly.
- 25:44SPEAKER_00: I took half of my my$5,000 bonus,$2,500, put it down on a flight school in Houston, and met one of my best friends who was my flight instructor.
- 25:52SPEAKER_00: Just had lunch with him in Denver a couple weeks ago, and um, and did that.
- 25:56SPEAKER_00: So it was a great experience.
- 25:58SPEAKER_00: Then I moved back to LA.
- 25:59SPEAKER_00: I didn't want to build my life in Houston, you know.
- 26:01SPEAKER_00: You start dating somebody who's local, and then all of a sudden you got a family, and next thing I know, I'm a Texan.
- 26:06SPEAKER_00: I didn't really want to do that.
- 26:07SPEAKER_00: So I want to get back to you saw the future.
- 26:08SPEAKER_00: I saw the future and I did not love it.
- 26:11SPEAKER_00: Didn't want it.
- 26:11SPEAKER_00: So I moved back and I worked for Security Pacific Bank, which got bought by Bank of America.
- 26:16SPEAKER_00: We were the fifth largest bank, amazing, amazing company.
- 26:21SPEAKER_00: Really treated their people well, enjoyed it and worked there.
- 26:24SPEAKER_00: But after that got bought, I decided to get out.
- 26:26SPEAKER_00: And that's when I started kind of my entrepreneurial journey.
- 26:30SPEAKER_01: Wow, it's a lot of years.
- 26:32SPEAKER_00: It wasn't a lot of years.
- 26:33SPEAKER_00: It was actually only four years.
- 26:35SPEAKER_01: Really?
- 26:35SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 26:36SPEAKER_00: I mean, not counting college, but yeah, I worked for four two years with Citibank, two years with Security Pacific, and then I started my first business.
- 26:43SPEAKER_00: I bought a failed dry cleaner, turned it around, opened another one, sold them both in a couple of years, turned$40,000 into a million bucks.
- 26:51SPEAKER_00: Um, that's all I had was a bonus one year,$40,000.
- 26:54SPEAKER_00: I borrowed all the money to build the second one.
- 26:56SPEAKER_00: I took a seller note on the first one and turned it around.
- 26:59SPEAKER_00: And so I was able to make some money with that.
- 27:02SPEAKER_01: How would you make a million now in this day and age?
- 27:08SPEAKER_00: It's a great question.
- 27:09SPEAKER_00: I would sell.
- 27:18SPEAKER_00: I feel like I could sell anything.
- 27:19SPEAKER_00: I could sell these mics, I could sell these whatever the hell these are, tripods.
- 27:23SPEAKER_02: Yeah, you probably could.
- 27:24SPEAKER_00: I could sell anything, right?
- 27:26SPEAKER_00: But what I like to sell is a highly valued intangible product, which is basically me, right?
- 27:32SPEAKER_00: I'm gonna sell you the promise that I'm gonna come in and solve problems for you.
- 27:36SPEAKER_00: And for that, you're gonna pay me a lot.
- 27:37SPEAKER_00: And that's what we do in executive search.
- 27:39SPEAKER_00: And we solve really, really important problems for our clients.
- 27:44SPEAKER_00: And it's it's it's a nice fee that we get, it's a fair fee because we're changing the trajectory of companies.
- 27:51SPEAKER_00: And I freaking love doing it because I get to I get to learn about all these companies.
- 27:55SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 27:55SPEAKER_00: You know, so I I love this business because it gives me the opportunity to go out and build these really good relationships.
- 28:04SPEAKER_00: And if I hustle and I do well, you know, you we have people that are making well well more than that.
- 28:09SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 28:10SPEAKER_01: You think it's easier to sell a service than a product?
- 28:13SPEAKER_00: No, it's the hardest thing ever.
- 28:14SPEAKER_00: That's why you get paid more.
- 28:15SPEAKER_00: And the hardest service to sell is you.
- 28:17SPEAKER_00: The product in this case is you, right?
- 28:20SPEAKER_00: And that's the hardest thing to sell because we are naturally humble people.
- 28:23SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 28:24SPEAKER_00: So you have to come about, you have to come across as if you know what you're doing, you're extremely confident, but also try to be somewhat humble.
- 28:33SPEAKER_00: But if you are too humble, you're not gonna win.
- 28:36SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 28:36SPEAKER_00: So you gotta go out there and say, listen, I'm the guy to do this, and let me tell you why.
- 28:40SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 28:40SPEAKER_00: Right?
- 28:40SPEAKER_00: And you've got to convince the client that you're gonna solve their very important problem.
- 28:45SPEAKER_00: We don't get hired on small problems, we get hired on big problems.
- 28:49SPEAKER_00: But it's really hard to sell the intangible.
- 28:51SPEAKER_00: We are selling hope.
- 28:53SPEAKER_00: At the end of the day, it's hope.
- 28:54SPEAKER_01: That's true.
- 28:55SPEAKER_00: You know?
- 28:56SPEAKER_00: So, but that's where you make the big bucks.
- 28:58SPEAKER_01: Okay, noted.
- 29:00SPEAKER_01: Um, you said you don't work for free.
- 29:03SPEAKER_01: What are your thoughts on unpaid internships for college students?
- 29:08SPEAKER_00: Oh, great question.
- 29:09SPEAKER_00: So I do not believe in unpaid internships.
- 29:12SPEAKER_01: Why do people do that?
- 29:13SPEAKER_00: Why do people do that?
- 29:14SPEAKER_00: Hang on.
- 29:14SPEAKER_00: Um let me finish this.
- 29:15SPEAKER_00: I don't Reagan's interrupting me.
- 29:17SPEAKER_00: I know.
- 29:17SPEAKER_01: He literally said, interrupt me, let's have a conversation.
- 29:20SPEAKER_00: I do want to have a conversation.
- 29:21SPEAKER_00: Interrupt me.
- 29:22SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 29:22SPEAKER_00: I don't believe I don't believe in not paying people.
- 29:29SPEAKER_00: So our company always pays our interns.
- 29:32SPEAKER_00: But it doesn't mean every company does.
- 29:34SPEAKER_00: And where I would do this and where I would work for free is if I get experience with the right company in the right industry, that's my dream, right?
- 29:42SPEAKER_00: So let's say, like I met some kids at UC Riverside a couple months ago that presented, and they presented a business plan competition for a cosmetic company.
- 29:51SPEAKER_00: And one of the gals there I got to meet afterward and said, I'd love to do an internship with a cosmetics company so I can get that real world experience.
- 29:58SPEAKER_00: So, well, I happen to be a shareholder of a nail polish company.
- 30:01SPEAKER_00: I can help you.
- 30:03SPEAKER_00: And, you know, we don't have a huge budget, so we're not hiring interns left and right.
- 30:07SPEAKER_00: But if she came to us and that was something that was really passionate for her and it checked a box for her, putting it on her resume, nobody says, hey, what did what did they pay you 15 bucks an hour or 20?
- 30:18SPEAKER_00: Nobody ever asks that.
- 30:20SPEAKER_00: You still get to put it on your resume.
- 30:22SPEAKER_00: And if you're smart, you're gonna get a letter of reference and a letter of recommendation from the company.
- 30:28SPEAKER_00: So there are times as a student, I would I would go after an unpaid internship versus a paid one.
- 30:36SPEAKER_00: Maybe they get a paid one with McDermott a bull, but they don't want to be in executive search, they want to be in beauty.
- 30:41SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 30:42SPEAKER_00: And if they have unpaid beauty or paid executive search, which is gonna help them get their ultimate career goal, which is beauty.
- 30:49SPEAKER_00: Well, this one here.
- 30:50SPEAKER_00: So go take it.
- 30:52SPEAKER_00: Go take that deal.
- 30:53SPEAKER_00: And I think people sometimes are short-sighted because they stop, step back, and say, I don't want to do that.
- 30:58SPEAKER_00: Here's the other short-sighted thing.
- 30:59SPEAKER_00: This is something else.
- 31:00SPEAKER_00: This is what I wanted to bring up.
- 31:02SPEAKER_00: I told you I got great news from the field this week.
- 31:04SPEAKER_00: I want to bring something up.
- 31:05SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 31:06SPEAKER_00: It's this idea of showing a potential employer what you plan to do in your first 90 days.
- 31:12SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 31:12SPEAKER_00: Right?
- 31:13SPEAKER_00: We got where there's somebody we're looking to hire who's a potential salesperson for one of our companies who actually on their own put together a first 90 days and presented it to us, and it was amazing.
- 31:26SPEAKER_00: Now, by the way, with caveats like, hey, there's a lot I don't know, but I am from the industry, and so here's some thoughts that I have, and I want to see how these align with you.
- 31:37SPEAKER_00: And I am malleable, so if these don't align with you, tell me what you think, and I can put that plan in place too.
- 31:44SPEAKER_00: So he had a lot of caveats in there or qualifiers.
- 31:47SPEAKER_00: So it wasn't like he was dead set and this is the way to go.
- 31:50SPEAKER_00: It was more like, hey, here's what I'm thinking.
- 31:52SPEAKER_00: I want to share my thoughts with you, and I want to hear what you're thinking about it.
- 31:56SPEAKER_00: And we didn't ask for it.
- 31:57SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 31:57SPEAKER_00: But he did it and it helped his candidacy.
- 32:00SPEAKER_00: So this is a person that we might make an offer to.
- 32:03SPEAKER_00: People don't do that.
- 32:04SPEAKER_00: And I've heard a couple of things, like somebody said, Well, what if they take your ideas?
- 32:09SPEAKER_00: I'm like, okay, you are speaking from scarcity right now.
- 32:12SPEAKER_00: You have to speak from abundance.
- 32:14SPEAKER_00: First of all, we might take your ideas, but we don't have anybody to execute on them.
- 32:18SPEAKER_00: That's why we're looking to hire you.
- 32:19SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 32:20SPEAKER_00: Come on.
- 32:21SPEAKER_01: That's true.
- 32:22SPEAKER_00: So take the initiative, go the extra mile.
- 32:24SPEAKER_00: People aren't willing to go the extra mile.
- 32:26SPEAKER_00: That's another problem.
- 32:28SPEAKER_00: If you're not willing to go the extra mile and you're wondering why you're stuck, I keep hearing people talking about how bad the job market is.
- 32:36SPEAKER_00: Well, it's bad if you make it bad, but there's people finding jobs too.
- 32:40SPEAKER_00: The people that are going above and beyond are finding jobs.
- 32:43SPEAKER_00: If you're not going above and beyond, there's no re like, there's no mystery as to why you're not finding a job.
- 32:49SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 32:50SPEAKER_00: You know?
- 32:50SPEAKER_01: It's true.
- 32:51SPEAKER_01: It's that victim mentality of like, oh, I've applied to 10 places, I haven't heard back.
- 32:55SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 32:56SPEAKER_00: By the way, what who who's showed you the rule book on how to apply?
- 33:00SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 33:00SPEAKER_00: Like everybody thinks the rules are you look on Indeed, you looked on LinkedIn, LinkedIn, you look at other things, see what companies are posting, and then you apply to those posts.
- 33:09SPEAKER_00: There's no rules on this, but people have come to believe that that's how you do it.
- 33:14SPEAKER_00: That's actually how you don't do it.
- 33:16SPEAKER_00: That's how you don't end up with a job and how you end up being one of 500 applicants.
- 33:21SPEAKER_00: The way you do it is go meet C-level folks where they're playing, where they're at, at shows, at trade shows, at other functions, at industry organizations in town.
- 33:34SPEAKER_00: Meet them there, circumvent the process.
- 33:36SPEAKER_00: That's how you get a job.
- 33:38SPEAKER_00: People don't know that.
- 33:39SPEAKER_00: They made up this idea about, well, that's not how job search is done.
- 33:43SPEAKER_00: And I always ask them, are you learning that from people that have found jobs, or are you learning that from people that haven't found jobs?
- 33:48SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 33:49SPEAKER_00: Usually it's people that haven't found jobs.
- 33:50SPEAKER_00: I feel like I'm getting fired up here.
- 33:52SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I was just thinking.
- 33:53SPEAKER_00: I'm gonna take I'm gonna take a breath.
- 33:54SPEAKER_01: Reagan, I'm gonna- God gets like mad when you get passionate.
- 33:59SPEAKER_00: I told you one of the goals was to yell at people.
- 34:01SPEAKER_00: I just want to yell at people.
- 34:02SPEAKER_00: By the way, I love people.
- 34:04SPEAKER_00: I don't want to yell at people because I don't love them.
- 34:06SPEAKER_00: I want to yell at them because I do love them.
- 34:07SPEAKER_01: It's because you know.
- 34:08SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and and I and I want to help them tell them.
- 34:10SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 34:11SPEAKER_00: And I want to help them.
- 34:12SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 34:12SPEAKER_00: I want disciples of mine to go forward and play by different rules.
- 34:18SPEAKER_00: If you play by different rules, if you break the rules, there's a book.
- 34:22SPEAKER_00: First, break all the rules.
- 34:24SPEAKER_00: If you break the rules, you will succeed.
- 34:26SPEAKER_00: If you play the by the rules, you'll never do anything imaginative.
- 34:30SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 34:31SPEAKER_01: So, okay, we have about five minutes left.
- 34:34SPEAKER_01: You know me, you know my job.
- 34:36SPEAKER_01: If I had to break one rule and go above and beyond somewhere else, where do you think that could be?
- 34:42SPEAKER_01: No, I love this.
- 34:43SPEAKER_01: I'm giving you permission to yell at me.
- 34:44SPEAKER_01: I love this.
- 34:44SPEAKER_01: Don't actually.
- 34:45SPEAKER_00: I love this for you.
- 34:46SPEAKER_00: Um, ask me outcomes, ask me time frame, ask me buy-wens.
- 34:51SPEAKER_00: Say, Rod, what do you want out of this?
- 34:53SPEAKER_00: What does success look like?
- 34:54SPEAKER_00: When do you want this done?
- 34:55SPEAKER_00: Okay, I will get back to you.
- 34:57SPEAKER_00: I will report to you.
- 34:59SPEAKER_00: Do you want me to report to you as I'm doing it, or do you want me to report to you when it's done?
- 35:03SPEAKER_00: Okay, because some things I don't care.
- 35:05SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 35:05SPEAKER_00: Like just tell me when it's done.
- 35:07SPEAKER_00: Other things, hey, it's important.
- 35:08SPEAKER_00: Give me progress.
- 35:09SPEAKER_01: For those of you who don't know, I'm his assistant.
- 35:12SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 35:12SPEAKER_00: And she's amazing.
- 35:14SPEAKER_00: She is absolutely, absolutely amazing.
- 35:16SPEAKER_00: She spins 50 plates on any given day, and the plates don't fall, which is amazing.
- 35:21SPEAKER_00: But for me, sometimes most of the time they don't fall.
- 35:24SPEAKER_00: I want outcomes and I want buy-wins.
- 35:27SPEAKER_00: And so that to me makes you even more invaluable.
- 35:31SPEAKER_00: By the way, we're only less than two years into this working relationship.
- 35:35SPEAKER_00: So we're still filling each other out and still kind of getting to know one another.
- 35:38SPEAKER_00: And and and what I like.
- 35:40SPEAKER_00: I I'm an over-communicator.
- 35:42SPEAKER_00: You are an under-communicator.
- 35:44SPEAKER_00: True?
- 35:44SPEAKER_01: True.
- 35:45SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 35:45SPEAKER_00: So I'm having to learn that about you, and you're having to learn about me.
- 35:49SPEAKER_00: I sent you an email last night, I think, in the middle of the night.
- 35:52SPEAKER_01: Hey, what's Yeah, it's 2.30 in the morning.
- 35:54SPEAKER_00: Well, I listen, I'm 61.
- 35:55SPEAKER_00: I get a I pee every three hours at night, and I wake up in the middle of the night and sometimes I watch a little bit.
- 36:03SPEAKER_01: I woke up and I was like, imagine waking up at 2 30 and sending this email right now.
- 36:07SPEAKER_00: I look well, I got a birthday wish from a buddy of mine.
- 36:09SPEAKER_00: So I look at my iPad and he had already sent me a text.
- 36:12SPEAKER_00: His birthday was yesterday, which I forgot.
- 36:14SPEAKER_00: He's always the he was a college roommate.
- 36:16SPEAKER_00: We we used to celebrate our birthdays at midnight together.
- 36:19SPEAKER_00: Um, but anyway, so I saw that text and then I thought, hey, we're giving our boat away for a charity event, and I'm out of town, and I got a captain and blah, blah, blah.
- 36:28SPEAKER_00: And I hadn't heard anything.
- 36:30SPEAKER_00: Reagan, the way she does things, she got it all done.
- 36:33SPEAKER_00: She's talked to the person who bought the boat.
- 36:35SPEAKER_00: She talked to the captain, she's got it all worked out, catering is worked out, everything's done.
- 36:40SPEAKER_00: I don't have to think about a thing.
- 36:41SPEAKER_00: But did you let me know that it was all done?
- 36:43SPEAKER_01: So the thing is we did talk on the phone about this.
- 36:45SPEAKER_01: Did we?
- 36:46SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 36:46SPEAKER_00: I thought the last time we talked to you hadn't been able to get a hold of the guy who bought it.
- 36:50SPEAKER_01: And then we we had another call after that.
- 36:52SPEAKER_00: So I brought it up.
- 36:53SPEAKER_00: Also, see, this is an issue.
- 36:55SPEAKER_00: Early onset something.
- 36:56SPEAKER_00: I something.
- 36:57SPEAKER_00: Something.
- 36:58SPEAKER_00: Don't put it in the air, but I don't want to put it out there, but it's like my it's I used to be a steel trap up here.
- 37:03SPEAKER_00: Not anymore.
- 37:03SPEAKER_00: It's a little bit of a still.
- 37:06SPEAKER_00: So we're learning that and we're trying to figure that stuff out.
- 37:09SPEAKER_00: But yeah, for me, it's about outcomes.
- 37:11SPEAKER_00: People become really, really valuable when they ask the question about what success looks like and when they want it, when does somebody else want that success, and then report back and just get it done.
- 37:22SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 37:22SPEAKER_00: So that's a big thing.
- 37:23SPEAKER_00: Thank you.
- 37:24SPEAKER_00: And then then you own it.
- 37:25SPEAKER_01: Thank you for the note.
- 37:27SPEAKER_00: All right.
- 37:28SPEAKER_00: Can I can I share?
- 37:30SPEAKER_00: I have a question for you.
- 37:31SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 37:32SPEAKER_00: What's your dream life?
- 37:34SPEAKER_01: My dream life.
- 37:36SPEAKER_01: I want three kids.
- 37:38SPEAKER_01: Boys, girls.
- 37:40SPEAKER_01: Ideally.
- 37:40SPEAKER_00: What if it's all boys?
- 37:42SPEAKER_00: Oh God.
- 37:44SPEAKER_01: I wouldn't.
- 37:45SPEAKER_01: I would have to cross that bridge when it gets there.
- 37:48SPEAKER_01: I would love to have girls because I love I love having my sister, so I want my kids to have a sister.
- 37:54SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 37:54SPEAKER_00: Would you put one of them up for adoption if it was three boys?
- 37:57SPEAKER_01: No.
- 37:58SPEAKER_00: Just checking.
- 38:00SPEAKER_00: Would you adopt a girl?
- 38:02SPEAKER_01: I would.
- 38:02SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 38:03SPEAKER_00: So you would have a girl.
- 38:04SPEAKER_01: My brother is adopted.
- 38:05SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 38:05SPEAKER_00: Wow.
- 38:06SPEAKER_01: And my poppy was adopted.
- 38:08SPEAKER_01: So yeah, I would adopt.
- 38:09SPEAKER_01: It is a lot of money, so I don't know.
- 38:12SPEAKER_00: You're going to make a lot of money, Reagan.
- 38:14SPEAKER_01: I hope so.
- 38:15SPEAKER_00: We're going to do so well.
- 38:16SPEAKER_00: We're going to get a million downloads on this podcast, and you're going to we're going to have tons of sponsors.
- 38:20SPEAKER_00: By the way, if you're interested in sponsoring, what no, I'm kidding.
- 38:24SPEAKER_00: Um, but no, you're gonna do really well on life, and I know Cole's gonna do really well.
- 38:28SPEAKER_00: You guys as a couple are gonna do really well.
- 38:30SPEAKER_00: I think you're gonna have everything you want.
- 38:32SPEAKER_00: What's your big life?
- 38:33SPEAKER_00: What are some of the things you want to do?
- 38:35SPEAKER_00: It just came up today with Mitch and Paulina.
- 38:36SPEAKER_01: We want a big lake house.
- 38:38SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 38:38SPEAKER_00: What lake?
- 38:39SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
- 38:40SPEAKER_00: Mammoth?
- 38:41SPEAKER_01: That's kind of far.
- 38:42SPEAKER_00: People don't live on Mammoth Lake, do they?
- 38:43SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I have no idea.
- 38:44SPEAKER_01: We're at what lake.
- 38:45SPEAKER_01: Just somewhere.
- 38:46SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 38:46SPEAKER_00: I would want a house in Hawaii.
- 38:48SPEAKER_00: Lake Mission Viejo.
- 38:50SPEAKER_01: No, not that.
- 38:51SPEAKER_01: Cole wants a boat, but not a yacht, because maintenance is a lot.
- 38:55SPEAKER_00: Not a yacht?
- 38:56SPEAKER_01: Not a yacht like you have.
- 38:58SPEAKER_01: I don't have a yacht.
- 38:59SPEAKER_01: Jet skis.
- 39:00SPEAKER_01: It'll be really fun.
- 39:01SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 39:02SPEAKER_01: Um, I want to go to Hawaii at least one time every year.
- 39:10SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 39:11SPEAKER_00: Good goal.
- 39:12SPEAKER_00: I like it.
- 39:13SPEAKER_00: Um it's a good family trip too.
- 39:15SPEAKER_00: You know what you're getting with Hawaii.
- 39:17SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I just love it.
- 39:18SPEAKER_01: And I grew up going there, so it was like it's a happy place.
- 39:21SPEAKER_00: Yeah, we went every year.
- 39:22SPEAKER_00: It was my mom planned that trip every year.
- 39:24SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 39:24SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 39:25SPEAKER_00: Big family reunion, 22 people every year.
- 39:27SPEAKER_01: Wow.
- 39:28SPEAKER_00: Crazy.
- 39:28SPEAKER_00: We are falling into that same pattern.

- 39:40SPEAKER_00: How about Europe?
- 39:41SPEAKER_00: Have you been to Europe?
- 39:42SPEAKER_00: Do you want to go?
- 39:43SPEAKER_00: When are you gonna go?
- 39:44SPEAKER_01: I don't know.

- 39:47SPEAKER_00: I think you need to go before you have kids.
- 39:49SPEAKER_01: Why do people just go to Europe all the time?
- 39:51SPEAKER_00: Why don't you go before kids?
- 39:52SPEAKER_00: I'm used to the city.
- 39:54SPEAKER_01: We can't for another year.
- 39:56SPEAKER_01: Cold's on probation.
- 39:57SPEAKER_01: Oh, that's true.

- 40:09SPEAKER_01: See what?
- 40:10SPEAKER_01: But look, I married her.

- 40:17SPEAKER_00: Maybe it's a baby moon.
- 40:18SPEAKER_01: Maybe.
- 40:19SPEAKER_00: All right.
- 40:20SPEAKER_00: By the way, I've already told Reagan that even when she has kids, if she wants to keep working, I want to keep her.
- 40:25SPEAKER_01: You guys, one of Fraud's fears is me getting pregnant.
