- Lucas: Welcome back to Learn Dutch with Fexingo. I am Lucas, and this is Luna. Luna: Hi everyone. It is good to be back with you. We have been talking about health and bodies a lot lately. Lucas: That is true. We covered body parts, headaches, and even visiting the dentist. Luna: And we talked about going to the gym, but mostly just saying 'I want to go.' Today, let us actually look inside the gym. Lucas: Exactly. Let us learn some specific vocabulary for the equipment and what you do there. It is very practical. Luna: Okay. What is the first thing people see when they walk in? Lucas: Usually, it is the cardio machines. The most common one is the treadmill. In Dutch, we call that 'de loopband'. Luna: 'De loopband'. Okay. Let me try that. De loopband. Lucas: Spot on. Just remember 'de' for the article. So, 'de loopband'. Repeat after me slowly. De loopband. Luna: De loopband. Lucas: Perfect. Now, imagine you are walking on it. You might say you are running or jogging. But today, let us focus on strength training. Luna: Strength training? That sounds serious. How do you say that in Dutch? Lucas: You can say 'Ik doe aan krachttraining'. It literally means 'I do strength training'. Luna: 'Ik doe aan krachttraining'. That feels like a mouthful. Let me break it down. Lucas: It is a long word, but you already know 'ik doe aan' from previous episodes. It means 'I do' or 'I practice'. So, 'Ik doe aan krachttraining'. Luna: Okay. Ik doe aan krachttraining. Lucas: Good. Try it again. Slowly. Ik doe aan krachttraining. Luna: Ik doe aan krachttraining. Lucas: Yes. Exactly right. And if you are lifting weights, you will encounter heavy things. Sometimes too heavy. Luna: Oh yes. I always pick something that is way too heavy. How do I complain politely? Lucas: You can say 'Het gewicht is te zwaar'. This means 'The weight is too heavy'. Luna: 'Het gewicht is te zwaar'. Let me try. Het gewicht is te zwaar. Lucas: Very good. Remember 'gewicht' has a 'g' sound at the start. Like a gentle gargle. Het gewicht is te zwaar. Luna: Het gewicht is te zwaar. Lucas: Perfect. So now you know the treadmill, the phrase for strength training, and how to say the weight is too heavy. Luna: I feel like a pro already. But wait, where do I put my stuff? Lucas: Right. Every gym has lockers. In Dutch, we often still use the English word 'locker', but sometimes we say 'kluis'. Most people say 'locker'. Luna: Okay, so I need to ask where the locker is. How do I ask that? Lucas: You can simply ask: 'Waar is de locker?' Luna: 'Waar is de locker?'. Easy. Let me repeat it. Waar is de locker? Lucas: Correct. 'Waar' means where. 'Is' is is. 'De locker' is the locker. Waar is de locker? Luna: Waar is de locker? Lucas: Great. One last useful phrase. Many gyms have pools. If you swim, you might say you are swimming a lap. Luna: Swimming a lap? That is specific. Is there a phrase for that? Lucas: Yes. 'Ik zwem een rondje'. It means 'I swim a round' or 'I swim a lap'. Luna: 'Ik zwem een rondje'. Let me try that. Ik zwem een rondje. Lucas: Nice work. 'Zwem' is swim. 'Een rondje' is a little round or lap. Ik zwem een rondje. Luna: Ik zwem een rondje. Lucas: Excellent. Let us review all five phrases together quickly. Luna: Okay. First one: de loopband. Lucas: De loopband. Luna: Second: Ik doe aan krachttraining. Lucas: Ik doe aan krachttraining. Luna: Third: Het gewicht is te zwaar. Lucas: Het gewicht is te zwaar. Luna: Fourth: Waar is de locker? Lucas: Waar is de locker? Luna: Fifth: Ik zwem een rondje. Lucas: Ik zwem een rondje. Luna: That was surprisingly easy. I think I could survive a trip to the gym now. Lucas: You definitely could. And remember, Fexingo is here to help you build these habits, one phrase at a time. Luna: Speaking of habits, did you know that listener support keeps this show going? Lucas: It really does. If Fexingo has been helping you make actual progress with this language, a small contribution makes a real difference. You can support us directly at buy me a coffee dot com slash fexingo. Luna: Yeah, it is just a small amount that helps keep the episodes ad-free and consistent. Thanks for listening. Lucas: Back to our gym topic. Imagine you are at the gym now. You see someone struggling with a dumbbell. Luna: Oh no. Should I help them? Lucas: Maybe. You could ask if the weight is too heavy. 'Het gewicht is te zwaar?' in a questioning tone. Luna: Ah, so I am checking in. 'Het gewicht is te zwaar?' Maybe they need a spotter. Lucas: Exactly. Or maybe they just finished their set and want to leave. Then they might look for the locker. Luna: So they would ask: 'Waar is de locker?' Right? Lucas: Right. And if they are done with everything, maybe they head to the pool. 'Ik zwem een rondje.' Luna: I love that. It paints such a clear picture. From the treadmill to the pool. Lucas: It is a whole routine. And you have the words for it. De loopband, krachttraining, het gewicht, de locker, en zwemmen. Luna: Let me try one more time. I am at the gym. I get on de loopband. Lucas: Good start. Luna: Then I decide to lift weights. Ik doe aan krachttraining. Lucas: Keep going. Luna: But oh no, it is too heavy. Het gewicht is te zwaar! Lucas: Calm down. Ask where to put your bag. Waar is de locker? Luna: Found it. Now I am tired. Ik zwem een rondje. Lucas: Perfect scene. You nailed it. That is exactly how you use these phrases in context. Luna: I feel much more confident about my Dutch gym vocab now. Thanks, Lucas. Lucas: Anytime. Keep practicing these until we chat again. See you next time.
