- 0:49Speaker 1: latest edition of this podcast delivered right to your phone, tablet,
- 0:52Speaker 1: or computer by subscribing wherever you get your podcasts. It's
- 0:57Speaker 1: the greatest thing since New New York City Bagels. Because
- 1:02Speaker 1: of the UC football schedule, I had to fly to
- 1:05Speaker 1: New Jersey at the crack of dawn on Sunday. I
- 1:08Speaker 1: headed to the airport at five am without eating anything
- 1:11Speaker 1: and by the time I landed in Newark around eight thirty,
- 1:14Speaker 1: I was famished. So I stopped at a bagel shop
- 1:18Speaker 1: in the airport. Why is it that bagels in the
- 1:21Speaker 1: New York City area are so superior to the rest
- 1:24Speaker 1: of the world. My bagel tasted like it was right
- 1:27Speaker 1: out of the oven, and it was the size of
- 1:30Speaker 1: a truck tire. There are bagel shops in Cincinnati that
- 1:33Speaker 1: I really like, but nobody doze it. Better get it
- 1:39Speaker 1: then the bagel geniuses in the Big Apple. Now let's
- 1:43Speaker 1: get to Sunday's game. For the past few years, when
- 1:46Speaker 1: the Bengals have won the coin toss, they have deferred,
- 1:49Speaker 1: and there's a simple reason to do so. It gives
- 1:51Speaker 1: you the chance to get back to back scores without
- 1:54Speaker 1: the other team getting the ball, if you can score
- 1:57Speaker 1: at the end of the second quarter and score again
- 1:59Speaker 1: to begin in the third. But the Bengals offense has
- 2:02Speaker 1: been so anemic in the first half this year that
- 2:05Speaker 1: Ted Carriss, who joined Joe Burrow as a captain this week,
- 2:08Speaker 1: was told that if he won the toss, the Bengals
- 2:12Speaker 1: would take the ball. You know, we hadn't had the
- 2:14Speaker 1: lead yet in the whole seat in two games, so
- 2:16Speaker 1: you know that was my orders to do. I'm glad
- 2:18Speaker 1: I won the toss. Tales never fails. Here we go
- 2:20Speaker 1: and the Bengals started the game in attack mode. Is
- 2:23Speaker 1: Burrow through ten passes on an eleven play opening drive,
- 2:28Speaker 1: a four yard touchdown pass the Tyler Boyd was wiped
- 2:30Speaker 1: out by a holding penalty, but that didn't kill the drive.
- 2:34Speaker 1: Burrow drops back to throw, looking back, pedaling, stepping left,
- 2:39Speaker 1: scrambling left, still looking to throw his pass, caught at
- 2:42Speaker 1: the goal line. Touchdowns Saba JP Ryan God opened his
- 2:47Speaker 1: Burrow scrambled, he caught it right at the goal line
- 2:50Speaker 1: and the Bengal score. It was seven nothing Bengals before
- 2:53Speaker 1: the Jets got the ball. Here are Joe Burrow and
- 2:56Speaker 1: Lael Collins on the decision to begin the game on offense.
- 3:00Speaker 1: I thought it was a good call obviously, you know
- 3:03Speaker 1: we put seven on the board on the first drive,
- 3:05Speaker 1: but if you if you go three and out, it's
- 3:07Speaker 1: a different conversation. So we came out aggressive and then
- 3:13Speaker 1: paid off for us. Yeah, I think we got to
- 3:14Speaker 1: take the ball every week to start the game off,
- 3:17Speaker 1: no matter what. That where we start ahead, we let
- 3:19Speaker 1: our defense you know, play with the lead all game,
- 3:22Speaker 1: and I think that's how we're gonna dominate opponents for
- 3:25Speaker 1: the rest of the season. So was that Was that
- 3:27Speaker 1: a decision that kind of like everybody and the team's like, look,
- 3:30Speaker 1: we went in the coin toss, let's take the football man,
- 3:32Speaker 1: let's get after it. That's the mindset that's out of two,
- 3:35Speaker 1: you know, the physical attack offense. And that's what we
- 3:38Speaker 1: did from the jump, and that's what we're gonna do
- 3:40Speaker 1: from here on up. The Jets answered with a field
- 3:42Speaker 1: goal to make it seven three, and the Bengals gave
- 3:45Speaker 1: them the ball right back first and ten Burrow wants
- 3:48Speaker 1: to throw again, his pass caught by Chase at the
- 3:51Speaker 1: forty oh He has the ball stripped away and the
- 3:54Speaker 1: Jets recover it at the forty three yard line. That
- 3:58Speaker 1: led to another field goal that made it seven six.
- 4:00Speaker 1: But on Cincinnati's next drive, Jets defensive lineman John Franklin
- 4:05Speaker 1: Myers was called for unnecessary roughness for a hit on
- 4:08Speaker 1: Burrow when the Bengals otherwise would have had to punt.
- 4:12Speaker 1: That proved to be an egregious mistake. Burrow back to
- 4:15Speaker 1: throw blitz coming throws over the mid caught by Tyler
- 4:18Speaker 1: Boyd two defenders sprinting down the middle of the field
- 4:21Speaker 1: of the twenty ten lunches for the end zone touchdown.
- 4:27Speaker 1: Night singals on the final play of the corner as
- 4:31Speaker 1: Tyler Boyd pinballed off two defenders and took it to
- 4:35Speaker 1: the house for the score and the Bengals make the
- 4:38Speaker 1: Jets pay all out blitz running route to the middle
- 4:42Speaker 1: of the football field, Tyler Boyd says, I'm not only
- 4:44Speaker 1: gonna make the catch, I'm gonna break a tackle. I mean,
- 4:48Speaker 1: the Jets brought seven or eight, they brought the house
- 4:51Speaker 1: that gave the Bengals of fourteen to six lead at
- 4:53Speaker 1: the end of the first quarter. As Boyd finished with
- 4:56Speaker 1: four catches for one hundred five yards, the first time
- 4:59Speaker 1: he's led the team in receiving yards in the bengals
- 5:02Speaker 1: last ten games. You know, any one of us can
- 5:05Speaker 1: go off. You know, he's got to do. Our sammis
- 5:06Speaker 1: is just let My motto is always just let it come.
- 5:09Speaker 1: Just let it come, you know. And when a ball
- 5:11Speaker 1: on my way and I can make the play, I'm
- 5:13Speaker 1: gonna always make it. Te Higgins also had a big
- 5:16Speaker 1: day with ninety three yards on five catches. First and
- 5:19Speaker 1: ten Bengals at the twenty five, Burrow takes a hand
- 5:22Speaker 1: off to Mixon. He's gonna fling it deep again. Tee
- 5:26Speaker 1: makes the catch. Penalty flags down as Higgins went up
- 5:30Speaker 1: and over Sauce Gardner to catch it and te Higgalmet
- 5:34Speaker 1: is now getting up. That's a helmet your helmet hit,
- 5:36Speaker 1: that's what the penalty flags for. That forty five yard
- 5:39Speaker 1: catch and fifteen yard penalty led to a short Evan
- 5:42Speaker 1: McPherson field goal that made it seventeen six, and when
- 5:45Speaker 1: the Jets got the ball back, the Bengals immediately took
- 5:48Speaker 1: it away. Hilton, coming on a slot corner blitz deep
- 5:52Speaker 1: frog down the middle of the field, intercepted by Logan
- 5:55Speaker 1: Wilson running back to the near sideline at the fifty
- 5:58Speaker 1: gets a block from Hilton at the fort he's at
- 6:00Speaker 1: the third, comes back to the twenty, louse of the
- 6:03Speaker 1: ball and there's a scramble at the twenty five. Von
- 6:07Speaker 1: Bell saying that the Bengals recovered and it looks like
- 6:10Speaker 1: Cincinnati did Trey Flowers with the recovery. It led to
- 6:14Speaker 1: another Moneymac field goal and a twenty to six lead.
- 6:17Speaker 1: The Jets ended the half with a fifty two yard
- 6:19Speaker 1: field goal to make it twenty to nine. The Bengals
- 6:22Speaker 1: were in the lead for the last twenty four and
- 6:24Speaker 1: a half minutes of the half, and Burrows says, that
- 6:27Speaker 1: is a much easier way to play. That's ideal, right,
- 6:31Speaker 1: Then you can run the ball, you can play action,
- 6:33Speaker 1: you can run your nakeds. You're not just dropping back
- 6:34Speaker 1: every play, So those I mean, that's critical going forward
- 6:37Speaker 1: for the rest of the years. Just coming out fast,
- 6:41Speaker 1: putting points on the board, staying close. Now you're not
- 6:44Speaker 1: in two minutes the whole game, and that puts offensive
- 6:46Speaker 1: line in better positions. It makes it easier to call plays,
- 6:51Speaker 1: So that was that was critical. Any thoughts of a
- 6:53Speaker 1: Jets come back in the second half were thwarted by
- 6:56Speaker 1: Trey Hendrickson. Hendrickson hips Flacco from behind. He's got his
- 7:00Speaker 1: second sack of the game. The ball came out and
- 7:04Speaker 1: the Bengals recover a strip sack b J Hill recovered
- 7:08Speaker 1: at the Jets twenty four and four plays later, the
- 7:11Speaker 1: lead grew to eighteen. Burrow, clapping his hands, catches the staff,
- 7:15Speaker 1: pup fakes throws, caught Chase with the catch. Burrow belted
- 7:19Speaker 1: after the throw HiT's a touchdown for Cincinnati. Burrow threw
- 7:24Speaker 1: for two hundred and seventy five yards with three touchdowns,
- 7:27Speaker 1: no picks, and a passer rating of one fourteen point nine.
- 7:31Speaker 1: He was only sacked twice. Here's Ted Carris classic Joey
- 7:35Speaker 1: b game throne at deep shots and our receivers made
- 7:38Speaker 1: big plays. So very proud of all the guys. It
- 7:41Speaker 1: was a team effort. Obviously, our defense played great, and
- 7:44Speaker 1: you know that's just an all around team win. Greg's
- 7:46Speaker 1: Airline's fourth field goal of the game, made at twenty
- 7:48Speaker 1: seven to twelve going to the fourth quarter. The Jets
- 7:51Speaker 1: got the ball two more times and the Bengals defense
- 7:55Speaker 1: took it away. Flaco as ready extends the hands, catches
- 7:58Speaker 1: the shotgun, stacks Gregson's got a hen. The Bengals will
- 8:01Speaker 1: sack Flaco. Look like the ball came out again because
- 8:05Speaker 1: of the rush by Trey Hendrickson. Hendrickson was credited with
- 8:09Speaker 1: two and a half sacks and three forced fumbles. Comes
- 8:12Speaker 1: with the game to football. I mean, it's a twenty
- 8:14Speaker 1: two man game, and you know, when you're playing football,
- 8:17Speaker 1: you're playing for your brothers next to you. It's not
- 8:19Speaker 1: all about the statistics, I know they'll come. We just
- 8:22Speaker 1: play hard up front. We rushed the passer effectively, and
- 8:26Speaker 1: you know, it's just keep chopping wood. I'm not really
- 8:28Speaker 1: looking at stats and all that stuff. I mean, we
- 8:31Speaker 1: had two losses and those of the things that were
- 8:33Speaker 1: important to me, and it meant a lot that we
- 8:34Speaker 1: got this win. Since Trey doesn't like to toot his
- 8:37Speaker 1: own horn, let's hear from Logan Wilson. I just can
- 8:40Speaker 1: see it in his eyes throughout the whole week in preparation.
- 8:42Speaker 1: It was just he was his time. He was just
- 8:43Speaker 1: dude for one of his Trey hendrickson days, and today
- 8:47Speaker 1: was that day. Appropriately, the final nail in the coffin
- 8:50Speaker 1: was provided by the Bengals defense. Sixty two seconds Tremaine,
- 8:55Speaker 1: fourth down and one for the Jets. Flacco catches the
- 8:58Speaker 1: shotgun staff he fires over the middle, let's pat it
- 9:01Speaker 1: up in the air, is intercepted, and that for the
- 9:06Speaker 1: first time this year is coffin DALs. I am Jesse
- 9:11Speaker 1: Bass with the i NTE. The final score twenty seven
- 9:15Speaker 1: to twelve. Once again, here's Ted Carriss. So you get
- 9:19Speaker 1: the taste of victory. Man, It's all we worked for.
- 9:20Speaker 1: It's a culmination of a lot of hard work, um,
- 9:23Speaker 1: a lot of just a lot of guys making plays today.
- 9:26Speaker 1: I thought we handled the game plan the right way
- 9:29Speaker 1: and we got a quick turnaround here, and you know,
- 9:30Speaker 1: we have a chance to even it up after a
- 9:32Speaker 1: rough start and get back on track against the team
- 9:34Speaker 1: that's rolling. So we're excited, we're ready to go. You know,
- 9:39Speaker 1: there's some things to clean up still in the game.
- 9:40Speaker 1: I thought we played played pretty good against a really
- 9:43Speaker 1: good defensive front, and that's just about as good as
- 9:45Speaker 1: the D line gets in the NFL interior wise. So
- 9:49Speaker 1: I thought we held up pretty solidum. But let's go
- 9:52Speaker 1: up next the Thursday night home game against the three
- 9:55Speaker 1: and oh Miami Dolphins, who beat everybody's Super Bowl favorite
- 9:59Speaker 1: Buffalo on Sunday. I spent a few minutes with Jesse
- 10:02Speaker 1: Bates after the game. Before we get to that, we
- 10:05Speaker 1: remind you that this podcast is brought to you in
- 10:07Speaker 1: part by Kettering Health, the official healthcare provider of the Bengals.
- 10:11Speaker 1: With more than one hundred twenty care facilities and fifteen
- 10:15Speaker 1: hundred care providers, Kettering Health is committed to guiding you
- 10:18Speaker 1: to your best health. Visit Kettering Health dot Org to
- 10:22Speaker 1: learn more. Now here's Jesse Bates. Jesse, you held the
- 10:28Speaker 1: Jets without a touchdown, four field goals, you had four takeaways.
- 10:32Speaker 1: What about the performance of the defense, how would you
- 10:34Speaker 1: describe it today? Obviously, when a team doesn't score a
- 10:37Speaker 1: touchdown on you, that's always good. But the main thing
- 10:40Speaker 1: that is a positive for us, we got turnovers. We
- 10:44Speaker 1: wanted to turnover battle, and like I said, I think
- 10:46Speaker 1: we play a really good defense. The past three weeks
- 10:49Speaker 1: of being able to create some turnovers. You had our
- 10:52Speaker 1: offense to ball. I thought we did a really good job.
- 10:55Speaker 1: And then also, you know, just with our pass rushers
- 10:58Speaker 1: finally getting on you know, you got got three sacks
- 11:01Speaker 1: and then we get interceptions. You know that that kind
- 11:03Speaker 1: of comes along with playing complimentary football on defense. So
- 11:08Speaker 1: as our rushers continue to get free and get home,
- 11:10Speaker 1: there will be more opportunities for us, you know, safeties, corners,
- 11:14Speaker 1: nicols like everybody to get interceptions. We just got to
- 11:16Speaker 1: capitalize on it. So and an interception for you today
- 11:19Speaker 1: along with Logan Wilson says, congratulations on that. How important
- 11:23Speaker 1: was the opening drive winning the toss taking the ball
- 11:27Speaker 1: which is unusual going down the field to score. How
- 11:29Speaker 1: important was that to set it telling today? Yeah, it
- 11:31Speaker 1: was the message throughout the whole week, starting practice fast
- 11:35Speaker 1: and then starting the game fast as well. So it
- 11:38Speaker 1: was a mindset that coach Taylor did a really good job.
- 11:40Speaker 1: He had a plan this week or what we're gonna
- 11:43Speaker 1: come in here and do. There was a lot of
- 11:45Speaker 1: commentary during the week along the lines of don't panic practice, Well,
- 11:49Speaker 1: do what we do now that you've followed that and
- 11:53Speaker 1: come away with a win? Is that kind of the mood? Now?
- 11:55Speaker 1: All right, we take we've taken care of business. That's one.
- 11:59Speaker 1: Anytime you get a win a good um. And we
- 12:01Speaker 1: got the first one out the way, and you know,
- 12:03Speaker 1: now it's just just gonna have to keep keep going.
- 12:05Speaker 1: We got a game him four days, four or five days,
- 12:08Speaker 1: UM against a really good team that's three and oh,
- 12:11Speaker 1: so it'll be a great challenge for us, and I
- 12:13Speaker 1: think it would be ready to prove not to ourselves,
- 12:16Speaker 1: but you know the whole world what we're about in
- 12:18Speaker 1: this locker room. So there was never no panic or
- 12:21Speaker 1: no question about who we were in this locker room
- 12:24Speaker 1: before we got this first one. You know, the ones
- 12:26Speaker 1: that we're gonna get in the future. So I just
- 12:28Speaker 1: gotta continue to practice hard and um execute our offense
- 12:32Speaker 1: and defensive special team. So final thing following up on
- 12:35Speaker 1: Trey Hendrickson, did you think this was coming? He didn't
- 12:38Speaker 1: have a sack coming in three well, two and a
- 12:40Speaker 1: half sacks and three force fumbles today. You know, Trey,
- 12:44Speaker 1: he's a maniac. I always call him maniac, and I'm
- 12:47Speaker 1: just happy to see him get going. I think last
- 12:50Speaker 1: year he had a sack almost every game, so he
- 12:52Speaker 1: kind of made up for it today with you know,
- 12:54Speaker 1: getting two and a half three So, um, I just
- 12:57Speaker 1: love seeing him, you know, get back there and then
- 12:59Speaker 1: do it a little celebration, uh, and then for him
- 13:02Speaker 1: to get two and a half today was great. So
- 13:04Speaker 1: he's a hardworking man, great person, so I'm not surprised
- 13:07Speaker 1: um by him continue to do well. Um getting back
- 13:11Speaker 1: to their quarterback. So congrats down the I NT more importantly,
- 13:15Speaker 1: congrats down the win. Absolutely appreciate that. That's Jesse Bates.
- 13:19Speaker 1: No time to hear from head coach Zach Taylor. He
- 13:21Speaker 1: spent three minutes with Dave Lapham after the game, gratulations.
- 13:25Speaker 1: Big win, win by two scores in the NFL not
- 13:28Speaker 1: an easy task now, winning winnings. Winning's difficult in this league,
- 13:32Speaker 1: especially on the road against the team we got a
- 13:33Speaker 1: lot of respect for Um. They got his last year.
- 13:36Speaker 1: So I thought, our guys really did a good job
- 13:37Speaker 1: answering the bell creens some momentum for ourselves. We just
- 13:40Speaker 1: needed to rip that band aid off for a first win.
- 13:42Speaker 1: And and I thought of the guys that are really
- 13:44Speaker 1: nice up today. Guys are obviously excited about it. I
- 13:46Speaker 1: mean that music's um, it's hopping out there, a coach,
- 13:49Speaker 1: it's a it's a little party atmosphere out there, and
- 13:52Speaker 1: well deserved because you know, you're in both football games.
- 13:55Speaker 1: I mean the NFL, like you said, it's a it's
- 13:56Speaker 1: a tough, tough dynamic. I thought, complimentary football today. Defense
- 14:00Speaker 1: take it away, short field, offense score touchdowns, agreed, you know,
- 14:05Speaker 1: and especially to start the game, their offense got the ball,
- 14:07Speaker 1: went down, scored, so the defense can play with the
- 14:08Speaker 1: first lead of the year. Start the second half. We
- 14:10Speaker 1: challenged the defense find us another turnover. They did, offense
- 14:13Speaker 1: punch it in with points. So those moments right there
- 14:16Speaker 1: were key in this game. And uh, and it's always
- 14:18Speaker 1: good for the defense in the in the game with
- 14:20Speaker 1: the turnover. You know, the offense started to drive that
- 14:21Speaker 1: everyone's getting worn out. For Jesse to come up with
- 14:24Speaker 1: that pick is a big deal. So third down, you
- 14:26Speaker 1: normally convert on third down. It was third and long
- 14:28Speaker 1: in some situation you just score touchdowns on those big
- 14:31Speaker 1: third down conversions. How big was that? Yeah, it's a
- 14:33Speaker 1: big deal. You know, that's TV stepping up making a
- 14:35Speaker 1: big play for us. And again it's it's he's always
- 14:39Speaker 1: a guy that's we can count on when a moment's
- 14:41Speaker 1: big and we need a big bill, we know TV
- 14:43Speaker 1: is gonna be the one to step up and be
- 14:44Speaker 1: capable of doing that. So for him to knowly make
- 14:47Speaker 1: that catch on a great route, but to finish the
- 14:48Speaker 1: playoff was something that really gave us a huge boost
- 14:52Speaker 1: right there. I thought a good sign was at the
- 14:54Speaker 1: end of the football game, as a formal linement, you
- 14:55Speaker 1: going with big bodies, you get six linemen out there
- 14:58Speaker 1: and you're just you know, not trying to surprise anybody
- 15:01Speaker 1: about anything. You're just going and pounding people and you're
- 15:03Speaker 1: kind of beating into submission and just letting the clock
- 15:06Speaker 1: wine down. That was a good thing to see. Yeah,
- 15:07Speaker 1: it was that's how you wanted into game, you know,
- 15:09Speaker 1: and you know, unfortunately we got to execute the kick
- 15:12Speaker 1: to finish off that drive and really put that game away.
- 15:14Speaker 1: But I thought our guys up front, we're starting to
- 15:16Speaker 1: starting to feel the momentum there and getting some good
- 15:18Speaker 1: push and some Ajo was doing a good job finishing
- 15:20Speaker 1: it as he subbed in there for Joe, So I
- 15:23Speaker 1: thought that was a really good way to end it
- 15:24Speaker 1: for the offense. Trey Hendrickson came up large. I mean,
- 15:27Speaker 1: I think he forced three fumbles himself, had two and
- 15:29Speaker 1: a half sacks and three forced fumbles on the day.
- 15:31Speaker 1: I think it was a crazy day. Great job by him.
- 15:34Speaker 1: You know, it's he's been close, you know, so many
- 15:38Speaker 1: times the last two games. And for him to create
- 15:40Speaker 1: the two three tournivers that he did and BJ cleaning
- 15:42Speaker 1: up two of them is big that we get that
- 15:45Speaker 1: from the defensive line and the other team's quarterback field,
- 15:47Speaker 1: they can feel that guy bringing it on his neck
- 15:49Speaker 1: and it affects their play. So yeah, I thought Joe
- 15:51Speaker 1: Joe Flacco was throwing off his back foot a lot today.
- 15:54Speaker 1: I mean I didn't think he really had time to
- 15:56Speaker 1: step into his throws and you know, kind of complete
- 15:58Speaker 1: the mechanics of his throw. I thought the pressure was
- 16:01Speaker 1: pretty significant all day long. They did a good job,
- 16:03Speaker 1: you know, a couple more sacks that were closed where
- 16:05Speaker 1: he got the ball out the last second kind of
- 16:06Speaker 1: spiked in the ground there. So I thought that our
- 16:09Speaker 1: defense really did a nice job holding them to four
- 16:11Speaker 1: fueld goals, two of them started in our territory. I
- 16:14Speaker 1: thought it was exceptional performance by those guys. They didn't
- 16:16Speaker 1: take a red zone snap until the very end of
- 16:18Speaker 1: the football game and still ended up, you know, settling
- 16:22Speaker 1: for a fuel goal. So I think up until that
- 16:24Speaker 1: point the deepest penetration that Jets had was the twenty
- 16:27Speaker 1: five yard line. I mean, when they had to the
- 16:29Speaker 1: defense just bowed up. Yeah, they've really done that for
- 16:31Speaker 1: three weeks now. They've played really well. We're going to
- 16:34Speaker 1: need that to continue. Appreciate you congratulations on a big dub.

- 16:55Speaker 1: Thursday night, and the Ravens won in New England on Sunday,
- 16:59Speaker 1: so after three weeks, Baltimore and Cleveland are tied for
- 17:02Speaker 1: first at two and one. The Bengals and Steelers are
- 17:05Speaker 1: a game back at one and two. Now time for
- 17:08Speaker 1: postgame analysis and this week's Radio Guys recap. The Bengals
- 17:13Speaker 1: get a badly needed victory by fifteen points in New York.
- 17:17Speaker 1: The offense set the tone today by winning the toss,
- 17:20Speaker 1: taking the ball, and marching seventy five yards to score. Yeah.
- 17:23Speaker 1: That's the seventh straight win where they've scored first, and
- 17:29Speaker 1: the sixth straight when where they've scored on their first drive.
- 17:33Speaker 1: So it's pretty important. I think, figured you need to
- 17:37Speaker 1: change something up, you know, I mean, just whatever you
- 17:41Speaker 1: need to do to try to get a W is
- 17:43Speaker 1: what you need to do. So I thought playing with
- 17:46Speaker 1: the lead for the first time, you know, it was
- 17:49Speaker 1: a big deal. And that wasn't an easy drive, you know.
- 17:52Speaker 1: I had to go ten plays to cover the distance
- 17:55Speaker 1: they needed to cover, and it was the sign of
- 17:58Speaker 1: things to come. On third down, some nice are down
- 18:00Speaker 1: conversions and they had some you know, three of their
- 18:03Speaker 1: touchdowns were on third down in third and long in
- 18:05Speaker 1: some cases, So it was kind of a foreshadowing of
- 18:08Speaker 1: things to come. It was nice to be the sackers
- 18:10Speaker 1: instead of the sack today just two sacks allowed four
- 18:15Speaker 1: sacks for the Bengals, including two and a half for
- 18:17Speaker 1: Trey Hendrickson. I know you talked to LC after the game.
- 18:20Speaker 1: Would you think of the play of the O line. Yeah,
- 18:23Speaker 1: I mean I thought that it was it was solid.
- 18:25Speaker 1: You know, I think, like we was saying during the game,
- 18:27Speaker 1: I think that the amount of time that they sustained
- 18:31Speaker 1: their blocks and protection was was a big factor, and
- 18:34Speaker 1: it allowed Joe to do some of the things he
- 18:37Speaker 1: wanted to do, you know, to extend and create plays
- 18:39Speaker 1: when the initial stuff wasn't there. He had some Houdini
- 18:44Speaker 1: like escapes, There's no question, but the fact that guys
- 18:47Speaker 1: were still pressing into guys and protecting Joe, I thought
- 18:50Speaker 1: was was it definitely a step in the right direction.
- 18:52Speaker 1: And you know ELC got it it out. You know, Uh,
- 18:56Speaker 1: he's got a issue he's dealing with. I asked him,
- 18:58Speaker 1: is it is it more pain as more uh stiffness,
- 19:01Speaker 1: and he said it is what it is, and he's
- 19:04Speaker 1: just gonna gonna continue to try to operate at the
- 19:07Speaker 1: best level he can operate at. So it's I thought
- 19:10Speaker 1: today was a good, good example once again, a complimentary
- 19:13Speaker 1: football and the defensive takeaways. He gave the offense short fields,
- 19:16Speaker 1: and the offense didn't waste any time, you know, putting
- 19:18Speaker 1: points on the board and paying it off. So it
- 19:21Speaker 1: was all It was all pretty sound in retrospect. Was
- 19:24Speaker 1: there anything more predictable then Joe Burrow would come out
- 19:29Speaker 1: sharp and have a good game today, not after the
- 19:32Speaker 1: way he handled himself during the week. I mean he
- 19:34Speaker 1: told everybody to uh our e lax, relax, and you
- 19:38Speaker 1: know Aaron Rodgers did that and played well after he
- 19:40Speaker 1: did that. So I think I think he realized how close,
- 19:44Speaker 1: you know, they were in terms of you know, getting
- 19:48Speaker 1: getting over the top, and they get over the top.
- 19:51Speaker 1: Went by two scores. In the NFL, doesn't matter who
- 19:54Speaker 1: the opponent is, you've you've had a pretty good day.
- 19:56Speaker 1: There's no question. Trey Hendrickson two and a half sacks,
- 19:59Speaker 1: three worst fumbles. I don't know off the top of
- 20:02Speaker 1: my head the last time a Bengal had three forrest
- 20:03Speaker 1: fumbles in the game. But just an extraordinary performance by
- 20:07Speaker 1: Trey and I can't believe that he wasn't a triple
- 20:10Speaker 1: team like he was in Dallas. You know, Dallas would
- 20:13Speaker 1: put a tackle, a tight end, and a back on
- 20:16Speaker 1: him at times, and they singled him up a lot
- 20:19Speaker 1: more than I thought he'd be singled up, and he showed, Wow,
- 20:23Speaker 1: that's not a good decision. So I would expect in
- 20:27Speaker 1: the future here in the immediate future that Thursday night,
- 20:31Speaker 1: I would think Trey is going to draw a lot
- 20:33Speaker 1: of attention after having the type of game that he had.
- 20:35Speaker 1: Other than his performance, what stood out about the defense
- 20:39Speaker 1: and holding the Jets without a touchdown in this game. Yeah,
- 20:42Speaker 1: I mean they didn't have a red zone snap until
- 20:44Speaker 1: the very end of the game. Their deepest penetration was
- 20:47Speaker 1: the twenty five yard line. I think they continue to
- 20:49Speaker 1: tackle very well, and I thought they're a big objective
- 20:52Speaker 1: was to squeeze the space between you know, themselves and
- 20:57Speaker 1: the back or tight end or whoever you know bars
- 21:00Speaker 1: just looking for completions, getting those completions two of those
- 21:03Speaker 1: guys and putting themselves in position to make tackles and
- 21:06Speaker 1: then doing it. You know this, this defensive football team
- 21:10Speaker 1: doesn't miss many tackles, There's no question about it. And
- 21:12Speaker 1: I thought they tackled really well. Today. The running game
- 21:15Speaker 1: by and large wasn't very good until the end of
- 21:17Speaker 1: the game. And then some JP Ryan had forty seven
- 21:19Speaker 1: rushing yards on one drive where the holes bigger during
- 21:23Speaker 1: that stretch. Was he hitting it a little bit better
- 21:25Speaker 1: differently from Joe? What did you notice during that stretch? Yeah,
- 21:28Speaker 1: I mean I noticed a real commitment on everybody's everybody's part,
- 21:31Speaker 1: you know, I mean they went big, They went six
- 21:34Speaker 1: offensive linemen. They weren't trying to fool anybody. What they
- 21:36Speaker 1: wanted to do had to lead, wanted to close it out,
- 21:39Speaker 1: you know, melt the clock, frustrate the jets, just to
- 21:42Speaker 1: you know, impose their will. And I think that's a
- 21:44Speaker 1: good sign. It's the running game has been sputtering, to
- 21:47Speaker 1: be kind, you know, so hopefully a drive like that
- 21:50Speaker 1: might you know, might ignite some things and U you know,
- 21:53Speaker 1: sharpen the execution and get some things going to One
- 21:56Speaker 1: thing I will say about some ajp Rhyan though, man,
- 21:59Speaker 1: he didn't he made quick decisions and just he went
- 22:02Speaker 1: after it. He got downhill square to shoulder, pads up
- 22:04Speaker 1: and and ran you know, behind his pads. There no
- 22:07Speaker 1: doubt about that. He was thumping people and had a
- 22:09Speaker 1: twelve yard touchdown catch before that. Yeah, that was that
- 22:12Speaker 1: was big on third down as well to uh, you know,
- 22:15Speaker 1: give himself as to make himself an available target for
- 22:18Speaker 1: Joe Burrow as he's you know, just trying to get
- 22:21Speaker 1: something done extended creating a play that wasn't the that
- 22:24Speaker 1: wasn't the way that play was drawn up, but the
- 22:26Speaker 1: results were pretty darn good. So as far as home
- 22:29Speaker 1: team advantage or home field advantage goes, the saying is
- 22:33Speaker 1: Thursday night home games are the biggest advantage. You can
- 22:35Speaker 1: have short week, you don't have to travel. Well, it
- 22:38Speaker 1: could come in handy this week because the Dolphins are
- 22:40Speaker 1: three and l. They beat the Buffalo Bills today. Yeah,
- 22:44Speaker 1: I mean that's a that's a huge win for them
- 22:46Speaker 1: to uh for them to go to Buffalo and uh
- 22:48Speaker 1: and our Buffalo to go down to Miami and get
- 22:51Speaker 1: that get that w I mean, m I know, I
- 22:54Speaker 1: know the Bills were shorthanded defensively. They had some injuries
- 22:57Speaker 1: in the secondary. I think they were missing one of
- 23:00Speaker 1: their guys up front as well. But you know, you
- 23:02Speaker 1: still have to you have to play both sides of
- 23:05Speaker 1: the ball. And they've got a pretty good quarterback. So
- 23:07Speaker 1: obviously the Miami Dolphins defense stepped up as well, and
- 23:12Speaker 1: they got themselves a huge win, I mean the division
- 23:14Speaker 1: win like that against everybody's Super Bowl favorite. I mean,
- 23:18Speaker 1: they're gonna be They're gonna be sky high. So it'll
- 23:22Speaker 1: be interesting to see if if they'll have a letdown
- 23:25Speaker 1: or if they'll, you know, sustain that that level of performance.
- 23:30Speaker 1: Short week got to travel not a not a short
- 23:33Speaker 1: flight from Miami. We'll see. Hopefully the Bengals built some
- 23:35Speaker 1: momentum offer this win and come out and play very
- 23:38Speaker 1: physical football against the Dolphins. Nice to say, coffin nails
- 23:41Speaker 1: for the first time this year. It was very nice.
- 23:44Speaker 1: It was Let's do it about ten more times. That'd
- 23:47Speaker 1: be good. Les Both podcast is presented by Alta Fiber

- 24:05Speaker 1: to turn the page and get to this week's Fun
- 24:07Speaker 1: Facts interview, where you get to know the person under
- 24:10Speaker 1: the pads. Time for some fun facts with long snapper
- 24:15Speaker 1: cal Ada Midas from Pittsburgh and Central Catholic High school
- 24:19Speaker 1: alma mater of Dan Marino. Is there a Dan Marino
- 24:23Speaker 1: shrine at Central Catholic. I won't quite say shrine, but
- 24:26Speaker 1: there's there's certainly a lot of respect given to his
- 24:28Speaker 1: name in the Central community, for sure. Understandably why now,
- 24:32Speaker 1: you were a full back tight end in addition to
- 24:35Speaker 1: being a long snapper and good enough to have some
- 24:37Speaker 1: smaller college offers. Correct didn't reel in the offers because
- 24:40Speaker 1: I had some injuries my senior year that kept some
- 24:43Speaker 1: schools from pulling the trigger on me. But going into
- 24:45Speaker 1: that season, attended a lot of camps and had a
- 24:48Speaker 1: pretty wide variety of interest from D one, Double A
- 24:50Speaker 1: and higher level D two schools. He told me back
- 24:53Speaker 1: in OTAs that your dad deserves credit for convincing you
- 24:57Speaker 1: to become a long snapper. What was his pitch, basically
- 25:01Speaker 1: pretty much that you know, the team that I was
- 25:03Speaker 1: playing on, realistically was a pretty stacked high school team,
- 25:05Speaker 1: and you know, I was realistic, knew my limitations as
- 25:09Speaker 1: a tight end fullback, and he said, hey, I know
- 25:11Speaker 1: you have big dreams about wanting to play football as
- 25:13Speaker 1: long as possible, and this is a way to continue
- 25:15Speaker 1: to do it. And you know, I'm still playing football,
- 25:17Speaker 1: so he certainly gets credit for that. How often did
- 25:20Speaker 1: you practice and how did you practice to get good
- 25:22Speaker 1: at this? Yeah? So, I mean obviously during practice. We
- 25:25Speaker 1: had a good guy named Roy Phillis who helped us
- 25:28Speaker 1: out during practice in high school, just learning the ropes
- 25:30Speaker 1: with the kickers, punters and snappers. And then in addition
- 25:33Speaker 1: to that, just kind of spent a lot of time
- 25:34Speaker 1: actually with my dad at the local elementary school field
- 25:37Speaker 1: just repping it out and you know, doing all sorts
- 25:40Speaker 1: of different things to work on snapping under pressure. And
- 25:43Speaker 1: I remember him just here and there, you know, banging
- 25:45Speaker 1: pots and pans. They're doing some interesting stuff to try
- 25:48Speaker 1: to distract me while snapping. But just got a lot
- 25:50Speaker 1: of reps in with him, and my brothers as well,
- 25:52Speaker 1: always helped out. We're doing fun facts with cal Adamidas.
- 25:55Speaker 1: I typed long snap trick shots into goo Google and
- 26:00Speaker 1: got nearly twenty five million results. Do you have a
- 26:05Speaker 1: favorite that you've seen and have you ever tried anything, well,
- 26:08Speaker 1: you know, just to stroke his ego a little bit,
- 26:10Speaker 1: I'll definitely say. You know, Clark Harris's world's longest snap
- 26:13Speaker 1: is certainly an impressive, impressive snap. But you know, I've
- 26:18Speaker 1: never done a ton of the trick shots. I've always
- 26:20Speaker 1: just kind of focused on snapping it to the punter
- 26:22Speaker 1: of the holder. But it is fun to watch those
- 26:24Speaker 1: videos every now and then, I know, And like there
- 26:26Speaker 1: was a challenge where guys would snap it and try
- 26:28Speaker 1: to hit like the cap off of a bottle. I
- 26:29Speaker 1: thought that was pretty cool. But I'd probably say those
- 26:32Speaker 1: two were the most impressive to me I've seen through
- 26:35Speaker 1: the window of a moving car. That's a pretty good one.
- 26:37Speaker 1: You might want to try. Yeah, and now you're giving
- 26:39Speaker 1: me a list of things to work on in my
- 26:41Speaker 1: free time. Cal you spent five years at PITT. You
- 26:45Speaker 1: majored in economics. If pro football had not worked out,
- 26:49Speaker 1: did you have a plan B career wise? In my
- 26:51Speaker 1: fifth year at PIT, I was able to start my
- 26:53Speaker 1: MBA at their business their Graduate business school, and that's
- 26:57Speaker 1: certainly something I want to complete in the near future.
- 27:00Speaker 1: In the off time with football is completely that NBA.
- 27:03Speaker 1: But you know, I have to say my minor was history,
- 27:05Speaker 1: American history, and that was probably what I was more
- 27:07Speaker 1: actually passionate about as a student. Um so, you know,
- 27:11Speaker 1: trying to I guess have my you know, feat in
- 27:14Speaker 1: both pools a little bit there, But uh, I can't
- 27:17Speaker 1: say I know exactly what I wanted to do, But
- 27:19Speaker 1: I just knew wanted to finish up that NBA and
- 27:22Speaker 1: uh you know, maybe something that somehow incorporated a little
- 27:25Speaker 1: bit of history as well. But I just I hadn't
- 27:27Speaker 1: thought a ton into it. I obviously my plan A
- 27:30Speaker 1: was football and it's still been working out so far,
- 27:32Speaker 1: so I'm all in with that right now. Plan A
- 27:35Speaker 1: is definitely working out. What was the highlight of your
- 27:37Speaker 1: Pitt experience, whether it was football or just school in general.
- 27:41Speaker 1: I'd certainly say winning the ACC championship with that group
- 27:45Speaker 1: of seniors we had last year, and it was a
- 27:46Speaker 1: it was a pretty old team, um, just a lot
- 27:49Speaker 1: of guys who had been there for a lot of
- 27:50Speaker 1: years and you know, just fell in love with the school.
- 27:52Speaker 1: You know, had a great relationship with coaching Ardusi and
- 27:55Speaker 1: his staff, and just a lot of guys that you know,
- 27:57Speaker 1: genuinely genuinely cared about Pitt and Pitt football and wanted
- 28:01Speaker 1: to you know, bring some glory back to to the
- 28:03Speaker 1: pit script And you know, guys that always knew about
- 28:06Speaker 1: or heard about the teams from the seventies and eighties
- 28:08Speaker 1: that were winning national championships and wanted to kind of
- 28:11Speaker 1: rekindle that flame a little bit, and we certainly, you know,
- 28:14Speaker 1: did a little bit of that and hoping the trajectory
- 28:16Speaker 1: keeps it that way at Pitt. Were you a big
- 28:19Speaker 1: fan growing up? Yeah, so this is a funny story.
- 28:21Speaker 1: I my dad went to Penn State, and that's kind
- 28:24Speaker 1: of a no no in the in the Pit community,
- 28:27Speaker 1: but um no, basically grew up kind of rooting for
- 28:30Speaker 1: both teams, obviously because my dad was a Penn Stater
- 28:32Speaker 1: and you know, spent some time in the Happy Valley
- 28:34Speaker 1: and some time at the North Shore at pit football games.
- 28:37Speaker 1: And and then it wasn't untill my recruiting process when
- 28:40Speaker 1: you know, my older brother and I both kind of
- 28:42Speaker 1: felt a little bit snubbed by by Penn State, and
- 28:45Speaker 1: you know, I got a chance to play at Pitt
- 28:47Speaker 1: and you know, things just went great and so then
- 28:49Speaker 1: you know, as a full one eighty and we just
- 28:50Speaker 1: were became a Blue and Gold family after that. We're
- 28:53Speaker 1: chatting with cal Adamidas. You were the top ranked long
- 28:56Speaker 1: snapper in last year's draft class, but didn't get selected.
- 28:59Speaker 1: You said afterward though, that your relationship with Darren Simmons,
- 29:02Speaker 1: the bengals longtime special team's coordinator, was a key to
- 29:05Speaker 1: winding up here. How did that relationship start and what
- 29:08Speaker 1: was it about Darren that made such a strong impression
- 29:11Speaker 1: even from the jump at the combine. Um, that was
- 29:14Speaker 1: I think the first time I interacted with him, just
- 29:15Speaker 1: because he wasn't able to be there for the Senior
- 29:17Speaker 1: Bowl obviously since you know, the Bengals were in the
- 29:19Speaker 1: Super Bowl, which is you know, a good reason to
- 29:21Speaker 1: miss it, um, But you know, being at the combine,
- 29:24Speaker 1: just kind of the way that he took over the drills,
- 29:26Speaker 1: and UM, I almost was like confused at for us.
- 29:29Speaker 1: I was like, wait, is this guy like a coach
- 29:31Speaker 1: or is he like running the like running the show?
- 29:33Speaker 1: But he, uh, you know, he just kind of took
- 29:34Speaker 1: control of things and you know, just seemed very sharp
- 29:37Speaker 1: and you know, continue to have zoom calls with him
- 29:40Speaker 1: and then his assistant cooled Anderson as well, and just
- 29:42Speaker 1: started to build that relationship and just saw their track
- 29:45Speaker 1: record and you know, the sense of the stability that
- 29:47Speaker 1: he has within this pro this organization. UM, and just
- 29:51Speaker 1: there's a reason why you know, he's been here for
- 29:53Speaker 1: as long as he has, and and then also saw
- 29:55Speaker 1: just the track record with Clark and Kevin as well.
- 29:57Speaker 1: You know, as a specialist, like there can be a
- 30:00Speaker 1: a lot of turnaround, but you hope to find yourself
- 30:01Speaker 1: in a position where you find a system and a
- 30:03Speaker 1: coach that works and you stay there your whole career basically,
- 30:06Speaker 1: and that's that's the dream and that's what that's what
- 30:09Speaker 1: his track record has been. So um it was like, hey,
- 30:11Speaker 1: you know, that's that's what I want. Why why settle
- 30:14Speaker 1: for anything less? Basically? All right, A few wildcard categories.
- 30:18Speaker 1: Legendary Cincinnati Reds broadcast or Marty Brennaman had his head
- 30:22Speaker 1: shaved for charity a few years ago. He raised a
- 30:24Speaker 1: ton of money for the Dragonfly Foundation. You did something
- 30:27Speaker 1: similar at pitt for Cal's kids. Describe what you did. Yeah,
- 30:33Speaker 1: so we did a fundraiser. UM with some of the
- 30:36Speaker 1: new NIL policies m in college, we were able to
- 30:39Speaker 1: work with Children's Hospital Pittsburgh and just basically started a
- 30:42Speaker 1: fundraiser for pediatric cancer care. And um, you know, with
- 30:46Speaker 1: the success our team was having, things kind of just
- 30:48Speaker 1: took off and you know, ended up getting um talked
- 30:50Speaker 1: about on like college game Day and on a lot
- 30:52Speaker 1: of our bigger games and the big broadcasts, and it
- 30:55Speaker 1: was just really cool. You know. I had a ton
- 30:56Speaker 1: of great help from some awesome people at PITT EJ. Borghetti,
- 30:59Speaker 1: Celeste Welsh, Chryslasala, all people who you know, helped out
- 31:02Speaker 1: a ton along with coaching, our doozy coach Powell, all
- 31:04Speaker 1: the coaches and and uh, you know, just you know
- 31:08Speaker 1: are the the wins. The big wins were helping too.
- 31:11Speaker 1: You know, I can't go without noticing just the excitement
- 31:13Speaker 1: around the program really helped channel that as well into
- 31:16Speaker 1: the charitable cause as well, and uh, it was cool.
- 31:18Speaker 1: Like I remember when we played VTech Um we had
- 31:21Speaker 1: a big win at their place, and there was like
- 31:23Speaker 1: a twenty five thousand dollars increase in donations just because
- 31:25Speaker 1: like people were fired up about pit football and then
- 31:28Speaker 1: they're like, oh, like this is a way to like
- 31:30Speaker 1: put my energy in love for pit into like charity
- 31:32Speaker 1: as well. And so it just worked out like the
- 31:34Speaker 1: season and the fundraiser just kind of took off together
- 31:37Speaker 1: and end up raising over one hundred thousand dollars for
- 31:41Speaker 1: Children's Children's Pediatric Cancer Care and then after we reached
- 31:45Speaker 1: the goal. Um it was what the week after the
- 31:49Speaker 1: AC Championship, we shaved my head and uh yeah, so
- 31:52Speaker 1: my hair went went bye bye, but it was for
- 31:54Speaker 1: a great cause you had the long, flowing, shoulder length
- 31:58Speaker 1: locks before that. Do you ever miss it? Absolutely? And uh,
- 32:01Speaker 1: you know, I'm kind of in the process of, uh
- 32:04Speaker 1: you know, growing it back out again. I just miss
- 32:06Speaker 1: having a little little lettuce coming out of my helmet. Um,
- 32:09Speaker 1: but I'm doing a little something with the beard as
- 32:11Speaker 1: well right now too, so we might who knows, we
- 32:13Speaker 1: might be able to do something uh you know in
- 32:15Speaker 1: the Cincinnati community with that, right and in this season,
- 32:18Speaker 1: so we'll see where that goes. And yeah, definitely do
- 32:21Speaker 1: miss it though. So as we've noted you're from Pittsburgh,
- 32:25Speaker 1: is there Promantee Brothers sandwich with the meat, cheese, cole slaw, tomatoes,
- 32:29Speaker 1: French fries, everything else? I'll jam between two pieces of
- 32:32Speaker 1: Italian bread disgusting or delicious? Well, um, you know it's
- 32:38Speaker 1: it's sure not Skyline chili. Have to I don't know.
- 32:43Speaker 1: I mean, you know, I'm from Pittsburgh. I have to
- 32:44Speaker 1: admit it's Uh, I definitely grew up eating a number
- 32:47Speaker 1: of those, you know, in just different like after sporting
- 32:50Speaker 1: events or you know, at at sporting events, and um,
- 32:53Speaker 1: you know, I thought it's pretty yummy, but I'm definitely
- 32:55Speaker 1: getting pretty acclimated to Greater's ice cream and Skyline Chili
- 32:59Speaker 1: as well, so you know, it's definitely haven't haven't really
- 33:02Speaker 1: had a Promanny sandwich. And while to be honest, all right,
- 33:05Speaker 1: well played, very well played. Final question for cal Adamidas.
- 33:09Speaker 1: This is kind of a deep one. If you could
- 33:11Speaker 1: meet anybody in history, athlete, actor, statesman, a religious figure,
- 33:17Speaker 1: whoever that person might be, who would it be. M
- 33:21Speaker 1: I mean, you know, I come from a Catholic family,
- 33:24Speaker 1: so I'd obviously have to say Jesus, like, I'd love
- 33:26Speaker 1: to just pick his brain. I guess I don't know
- 33:29Speaker 1: that's the right thing, but you know, a little easier,
- 33:31Speaker 1: maybe more fun to answer. I don't know, I'd probably say,
- 33:35Speaker 1: just being a history guy, I would love to meet
- 33:37Speaker 1: like George Washington or any like the founding fathers because
- 33:40Speaker 1: just the way they thought and you know, created this
- 33:43Speaker 1: country is uh, it's kind of mind blowing and just
- 33:47Speaker 1: how ahead of the time and the thought processes of
- 33:50Speaker 1: that time they were to you know, write the Declaration
- 33:53Speaker 1: of independence and you know, establish a system a republic,
- 33:57Speaker 1: you know, of government and h yeah, I definitely say
- 34:00Speaker 1: one of the one of the founding follows, maybe Ben Franklin,
- 34:02Speaker 1: because he's a very fascinating character as well. So that'd
- 34:05Speaker 1: be my probably Benjamin Franklin, Jesus, George Washington and Ben Franklin.
- 34:10Speaker 1: It would be a great trio with a long snapper
- 34:13Speaker 1: thrown in there for good measure. Hey, I appreciate your time,
- 34:16Speaker 1: Congratulations on your success, and best of luck the rest
