- 1:00:00If you're thinking of
- 1:00:01becoming a marine biologist,
- 1:00:02marine conservationist, do
- 1:00:04you know how you're gonna
- 1:00:05plan out your ocean conservation career?
- 1:00:07Do you know how easy or
- 1:00:09hard it is to attain a career
- 1:00:10in ocean conservation?
- 1:00:12Well, we're gonna talk
- 1:00:13about it on today's episode
- 1:00:13of the How to Protect the Ocean podcast
- 1:00:15because this is something
- 1:00:16that I'm gonna ask you questions
- 1:00:19because this is something
- 1:00:20that we don't really talk about.
- 1:00:22And I did a
- 1:00:23presentation earlier last week
- 1:00:25where I talked to some high school kids
- 1:00:27and I asked them the same question.
- 1:00:28It was really interesting to
- 1:00:29hear some of their answers.
- 1:00:30So we're gonna talk
- 1:00:30about that on this episode.
- 1:00:32Let's start the show.
- 1:00:37Hey everybody, welcome back to another
- 1:00:38exciting episode of the How
- 1:00:39to Protect the Ocean podcast.
- 1:00:40I'm your host Andrew Lewin.
- 1:00:42And this is the podcast where you find
- 1:00:43out what's happening with the ocean,
- 1:00:44how you can speak up for the ocean,
- 1:00:45and what you can do to live for a better
- 1:00:46ocean by taking action.
- 1:00:49On today's episode, we are going to be
- 1:00:50talking about ocean conservation careers.
- 1:00:54Your ocean conservation career.
- 1:00:55If you're listening to this episode,
- 1:00:57you're probably thinking out.
- 1:00:58At some point, you want to
- 1:00:59work in ocean conservation.
- 1:01:00That could include marine biology, marine
- 1:01:02conservation, that
- 1:01:02could include genetics,
- 1:01:03that could include, you know, a lot of
- 1:01:04different science biology,
- 1:01:06that could include
- 1:01:06oceanography, physics, chemistry,
- 1:01:09it could include a whole slew of things,
- 1:01:12business management,
- 1:01:13entrepreneurship, anything.
- 1:01:15Ocean conservation career
- 1:01:16really comes down to anything.
- 1:01:19But there are certain things that you
- 1:01:20have to ask yourself
- 1:01:21when you are considering.
- 1:01:23This is a lot for high school students,
- 1:01:24high school students, a
- 1:01:25lot for university students
- 1:01:26or recent graduates, whether you have a
- 1:01:28graduate degree or undergraduate degree,
- 1:01:30or even just people who are
- 1:01:32trying to pivot mid-career,
- 1:01:34someone who's pivoted a
- 1:01:35number of times during my career.
- 1:01:37You want to make sure that you understand
- 1:01:39how you can benefit the
- 1:01:42field of ocean conservation
- 1:01:43and how you can say, "Hey, I'm going to
- 1:01:45have an ocean
- 1:01:45conservation career because I have,
- 1:01:50I bring this skill set or this experience
- 1:01:52that can benefit what's needed."
- 1:01:55And I'm going to say
- 1:01:56it's not always science.
- 1:01:58It's not always, we don't necessarily
- 1:02:00need more marine biologists.
- 1:02:02And I think that encapsulates a lot
- 1:02:04because I've spoken to a lot
- 1:02:05of people who are mid-career,
- 1:02:06like, "Hey, I want to do
- 1:02:08what marine biologists do.
- 1:02:09I want to get into ocean conservation and
- 1:02:10protect sharks or protect the ocean.
- 1:02:12So I'm going to go back
- 1:02:13for a four-year degree."
- 1:02:14Well, look, that's great.
- 1:02:15And if you have the money to do it, and
- 1:02:16that's really what you want to do,
- 1:02:18go ahead, go back to school, mid-career,
- 1:02:21whatever you want to
- 1:02:21do, and do your thing.
- 1:02:23And work your butt off because you
- 1:02:24probably know what
- 1:02:25you want at this point.
- 1:02:27And that could be a marine biology career
- 1:02:28and you can excel at it.
- 1:02:29And I think I applaud you.
- 1:02:31But you don't always have
- 1:02:32to do something in science.
- 1:02:34If you come from a banking background or
- 1:02:36economic background
- 1:02:36or business background,
- 1:02:38you can benefit it in many different ways
- 1:02:39and probably succeed
- 1:02:41financially at it quite a bit.
- 1:02:43You know, I think we look at the scale of
- 1:02:45where ocean conservation pay is.
- 1:02:49And that's what a lot of people say.
- 1:02:50It's like when I grew up and I'm like,
- 1:02:52"Yeah, I want to be a marine biologist."
- 1:02:53Like, "Can you make money as a marine
- 1:02:54biologist?" And the short
- 1:02:55answer is, "Yes, you can."
- 1:02:58But you have to, it depends on the job
- 1:03:00that you're working, right?
- 1:03:01Like a lot of the people, when we talk
- 1:03:03about marine biology, we think about
- 1:03:04working on the ocean or in the ocean.
- 1:03:07Scuba diving, snorkeling, you know,
- 1:03:09putting down broths, putting down
- 1:03:11cameras, you know, ROV work.
- 1:03:13Those are the fun things you see on
- 1:03:15National Geographic and Shark Week and
- 1:03:17all that kind of stuff.
- 1:03:18And that happens. Like we see tagging
- 1:03:19studies, we see ROV
- 1:03:21studies, we see drone studies,
- 1:03:23we see all these cool fancy tech studies.
- 1:03:26And then when you just get down and we go
- 1:03:27do scuba diving or snorkeling and
- 1:03:30trailing behind a boat,
- 1:03:31it's pretty cool stuff. You
- 1:03:33get to do pretty cool stuff.
- 1:03:34But then on the other hand, we also do
- 1:03:35like water quality marine,
- 1:03:36like taking water samples,
- 1:03:38you know, getting into some pretty bad
- 1:03:40water if you have to and taking samples.
- 1:03:43Like so there's a lot of different things
- 1:03:44that you can do and there's different
- 1:03:46sectors that you can go in.
- 1:03:47And there's different types of jobs
- 1:03:48within the field of ocean conservation.
- 1:03:51You can have a variety of different ocean
- 1:03:52conservation careers within the ocean
- 1:03:54conservation career if you get my drift.
- 1:03:56But the thing that you have to ask is
- 1:03:57really two things that
- 1:03:58you have to ask yourself.
- 1:04:00You have to ask yourself,
- 1:04:01how much do I want to get paid?
- 1:04:04The second thing is to support the
- 1:04:06lifestyle that I lead.
- 1:04:07So you want to make sure you get enough
- 1:04:10financially and then enough to have a
- 1:04:13good lifestyle that you want.
- 1:04:15Those two come hand in hand and it's not
- 1:04:18always asked when kids or adults are
- 1:04:22asked are saying, hey, I want to go into
- 1:04:24marine biology or ocean conservation.
- 1:04:26I was like, great.
- 1:04:28What's your lifestyle going to be like?
- 1:04:30What do you want as your lifestyle?
- 1:04:32Do you truly understand the lifestyle?
- 1:04:33Because when I was a high school kid, you
- 1:04:35couldn't tell me anything.
- 1:04:36Nothing was going to stop me
- 1:04:37from being a marine biologist.
- 1:04:39Nothing. Absolutely nothing.
- 1:04:40Even when people are like, yeah, well,
- 1:04:42the pay is not that bad because I always
- 1:04:43thought I'm just going to figure it out.
- 1:04:46I'm just going to
- 1:04:46figure out and get some pay.
- 1:04:47And I'll be honest. I had some decent pay
- 1:04:49when I worked for the government.
- 1:04:51I had some decent pay when I
- 1:04:52worked for a private consultant.
- 1:04:53I had some decent pay when
- 1:04:55you work for a nonprofit.
- 1:04:56You may not be getting like a huge pay
- 1:04:58depending on the level you're working at.
- 1:05:00If you're looking more on the
- 1:05:01administrative side as a manager or even
- 1:05:04like an executive director, you can get
- 1:05:07paid a lot of money.
- 1:05:07You can get paid a good amount of money
- 1:05:09to have a pretty comfortable life and not
- 1:05:11have to worry about bills.
- 1:05:13But if you're working in the field all
- 1:05:14the time as a technician, like a field
- 1:05:17technician, having a lot of fun out in
- 1:05:20the ocean all the time or on a river or
- 1:05:22on a lake or whatever,
- 1:05:23you really have to like it.
- 1:05:24You may not get paid as much. You may get
- 1:05:27paid a decent wage depending on what
- 1:05:30entity you're working for.
- 1:05:32But you're not going to be
- 1:05:33paying getting paid a ton.
- 1:05:34And it's surprising for a lot of people
- 1:05:38and depending on where you are, it's
- 1:05:39surprising that you get
- 1:05:41paid so low in certain places.
- 1:05:44But it all depends on how much money that
- 1:05:46company or how much funding that
- 1:05:48organization or
- 1:05:48department is going to get.
- 1:05:50And you're really you either benefit or
- 1:05:54you don't benefit off of that.
- 1:05:56And some people will go from job to job,
- 1:05:58not necessarily because they don't can't
- 1:05:59find a full time position, but maybe the
- 1:06:01funding doesn't allow for it.
- 1:06:03So especially in the nonprofit
- 1:06:04organization, everything is based on
- 1:06:06funding. So if the organization runs out
- 1:06:07of funding or there's an end date to that
- 1:06:09funding, you'll often see job ads that
- 1:06:12are saying, hey, yeah, like, you know,
- 1:06:14this is a two year position or this is a
- 1:06:16one year position or this is a six month
- 1:06:18position or this is a
- 1:06:19three year position.
- 1:06:29You just may not be able to get it right
- 1:06:31away, you know, and get more experience
- 1:06:33and move on to the next nonprofit
- 1:06:35organization until
- 1:06:36hopefully you find a full time job.
- 1:06:39But even then, some of the pays are not
- 1:06:41the greatest, especially when it comes to
- 1:06:43science, which I find surprising because
- 1:06:46that's what a lot of that are based on a
- 1:06:49lot of these organizations are based on.
- 1:06:50But communications marketing operations
- 1:06:54executive director, all those kinds of
- 1:06:57those kind of jobs
- 1:06:58typically pay pretty well.
- 1:07:01I applied to one job that had the posting
- 1:07:02was like over it was a communication job.
- 1:07:04It was over $100,000. That's Canadian.
- 1:07:08Like it was like $115,000. There's
- 1:07:10another communication job.
- 1:07:11There was like 130 to $150,000.
- 1:07:16Those are like communication director
- 1:07:17positions or senior communications
- 1:07:18director positions. Those are pretty big,
- 1:07:22you know, but program
- 1:07:23officers and things like that.
- 1:07:25Those tend to be lower on the totem pole
- 1:07:26when you're talking about nonprofit
- 1:07:27organization or if you're talking about
- 1:07:29government, it's a little it's a little
- 1:07:31higher depending on the government.
- 1:07:33And if they're actually hiring these
- 1:07:34days, but, you know, they they tend to
- 1:07:36have like specific positions. I know the
- 1:07:39Canadian government is unionized. So they
- 1:07:41have they actually just post, you know,
- 1:07:43exactly what everybody's making depending
- 1:07:45on how many years they've worked in that
- 1:07:47position as well as what position they're
- 1:07:49working, like what level they are.
- 1:07:50They're at like Biola, just one, Biola,
- 1:07:52just two physical scientists, one, three,
- 1:07:54six, or five, it goes up to five, four,
- 1:07:57five so that you can tell how much the
- 1:07:59higher the number, the more they get
- 1:08:00paid, the more responsibility they have.
- 1:08:02So more administrative they have. Now, I
- 1:08:04know some people who've gotten into that
- 1:08:06level and they're like, Oh, yeah, no, I
- 1:08:07don't actually like this kind of role. I
- 1:08:08want to go back down and do the fun
- 1:08:10stuff, but earn, try and like get your,
- 1:08:12get the biggest bang
- 1:08:13for the buck, so to speak.
- 1:08:14Right. So you try and maximize the amount
- 1:08:16of money you can get without having to do
- 1:08:19too many boring office things. So as
- 1:08:22someone would tell me
- 1:08:23in the, in the industry.
- 1:08:25So it all depends on your preference and
- 1:08:26what you want to make and how much you
- 1:08:28want to make and how much life. But if
- 1:08:30you're planning it out and you want to
- 1:08:31look at the jobs, you got to plan it out.
- 1:08:32You got to be like, look, I want to make
- 1:08:34I want to make a good amount of money to
- 1:08:36support my lifestyle. And that could be
- 1:08:38having a family that could be having a
- 1:08:40house or an apartment or move around a
- 1:08:43little bit with your partner.
- 1:08:44If you have a partner or not having a
- 1:08:45partner, it all depends on the lifestyle
- 1:08:47that you want to live. And they're all
- 1:08:49doable within the construct of the ocean
- 1:08:52conservation career.
- 1:08:52You just have to do the research and
- 1:08:55speak to people who have different types
- 1:08:57of careers. There are people who go into
- 1:08:58the field for like six weeks at a time,
- 1:09:01seven weeks at a time. There are people
- 1:09:04who go for like over,
- 1:09:05over three months at a time.
- 1:09:07You know, they're away from whoever their
- 1:09:09loved ones, whether it's a family,
- 1:09:10whether, you know, it's like an extended
- 1:09:12family or friends or whatever, or it's
- 1:09:15like a close to their family, their,
- 1:09:16their kids, their, their partner.
- 1:09:19It all depends, right? It all depends on
- 1:09:21the job that you have the other. Some
- 1:09:23people have like a nine to five and they
- 1:09:25go to work and they come home every day.
- 1:09:26They get to participate in all their kids
- 1:09:28activities and all that kind of stuff.
- 1:09:30And they love it. And
- 1:09:31that's, and that's great too.
- 1:09:33Whatever the lifestyle is and whatever
- 1:09:35the money is those you have to know what
- 1:09:37that is that will allow you to dictate
- 1:09:40kind of life. But what you can't predict
- 1:09:42and this happens to a lot of people is
- 1:09:45the decisions that come in life that will
- 1:09:47make you pivot,
- 1:09:48whether you like it or not.
- 1:09:50So when that can be positive, some that
- 1:09:51can be negative, right? All depends on
- 1:09:53the human psyche. It all depends on the
- 1:09:55person and the situations are all unique.
- 1:09:57But there are certain times in certain
- 1:09:59situations where you
- 1:10:00have to make a decision.
- 1:10:02And it's sometimes the personal decision.
- 1:10:03Sometimes it's a business decision or a
- 1:10:05career decision, but it will affect you.
- 1:10:08And it really just depends. You have no
- 1:10:09idea what will happen.
- 1:10:11And some of it, they'll be hard decisions
- 1:10:13to make at the time. And then you'll
- 1:10:15figure out whether you want, like whether
- 1:10:16you agreed with that
- 1:10:17decision or not after that.
- 1:10:19And I'll tell you mine. And this is what
- 1:10:21I told that this great nine girls school
- 1:10:24that I was at or this girl school that I
- 1:10:26was at that I presented in
- 1:10:28front of great nine kids.
- 1:10:29And we discussed my career and I didn't
- 1:10:32want to just tell them about living. I
- 1:10:34worked for government and I worked for a
- 1:10:36private consultant. I went back to
- 1:10:37government and I worked here and I worked
- 1:10:38in the US and I worked there.
- 1:10:40I could talk about the fun times and all
- 1:10:41that kind of stuff. But I want to talk
- 1:10:43about the decision making because like
- 1:10:46when we think about marine biology,
- 1:10:48especially like I knew when I was 14, I
- 1:10:50want to be a marine biologist.
- 1:10:50And that's all I ever wanted to be. So as
- 1:10:53I grew up, then I met podcasting, but I'm
- 1:10:55still in marine biology, podcasting. But
- 1:10:56as I kind of grew up through my high
- 1:10:58school, that's all I was thinking. I was
- 1:11:00like, I'm going to go to university. I'm
- 1:11:01going to get an undergraduate degree.
- 1:11:02Then I'm going to go to grad school and
- 1:11:03get a master's and I'm going to get a PhD
- 1:11:05and then I'm going to work either as a
- 1:11:06professor or some research.
- 1:11:08And I'm going to travel around the world
- 1:11:10and do research on every animal that I
- 1:11:12want to do. And I would have full control
- 1:11:15over that. And that's fine dream. That
- 1:11:17could happen. That could
- 1:11:18happen. It could happen.
- 1:11:21Doesn't happen often, but it could
- 1:11:22happen. But what I didn't expect is that
- 1:11:27at the end of my university career, which
- 1:11:29I by the end, I had no idea what I wanted
- 1:11:31to do in marine biology.
- 1:11:33I met the love of my life who ended up
- 1:11:36becoming my wife. But what I didn't
- 1:11:39realize is that when I like when I grew
- 1:11:42up, I was going to travel the world.
- 1:11:45When she grew up, she was going to stay
- 1:11:46here in Ontario to be close to family
- 1:11:48because her lifestyle was raise a family,
- 1:11:51be close to family so family
- 1:11:52can help and be a part of that.
- 1:11:55So I met my wife, fell in love. We both
- 1:11:57fell in love. And I'm like, OK, like,
- 1:11:59hey, I'm going down to Louisiana and I'm
- 1:12:02going to be on a boat
- 1:12:03for like eight months.
- 1:12:04Now come back every couple of months.
- 1:12:06Like, OK, we'll just figure out from
- 1:12:07there. And I fell more in love and more
- 1:12:09in love. And we both fell more in love with each other.
- 1:12:10And then I came home and I said, hey, I'm
- 1:12:12going to do a master's. I got offered a
- 1:12:13master's, but it's not here in Ontario.
- 1:12:15It's out in Halifax. So we got to move.
- 1:12:18Can we move to Halifax
- 1:12:19together? So we moved to Halifax.
- 1:12:21I said, I'll give you two. Give me two
- 1:12:22years there. I'll get my master's and
- 1:12:24then we'll come back here and we'll and
- 1:12:26we'll start working on our family and get
- 1:12:27married and start working on our family.
- 1:12:29You know, we were set for like this is as
- 1:12:31soon as we met, like we knew we were
- 1:12:33going to get married like that. This is
- 1:12:34my one always has been always will be.
- 1:12:35And we came back after two years. I got
- 1:12:39off your PhD and I rejected it because
- 1:12:41I'm like, I got to go back to Ontario. I
- 1:12:43promise my wife. I go back to Ontario.
- 1:12:44Got married and, you know, we, you know,
- 1:12:49we started to have kids and, you know,
- 1:12:51that one thing led to another. We the
- 1:12:53kids are starting to grow up.
- 1:12:54And, you know, I had to do different jobs
- 1:12:56for marine biology and find jobs within
- 1:12:58Ontario and started a podcast and all
- 1:13:00this kind of stuff. And I don't regret
- 1:13:01any of it at the time.
- 1:13:02I didn't love it all the time because I
- 1:13:04didn't love all the jobs that I had. But
- 1:13:07I don't regret it because now my my kids
- 1:13:10know their grandparents and their uncles
- 1:13:12and my sister-in-law and like the aunts
- 1:13:14and cousins and stuff.
- 1:13:15And they love it. Right. We had a great
- 1:13:17life. We're having a great life. And so
- 1:13:19I, you know, that was the choice that I
- 1:13:22had to face. That was the
- 1:13:24big pivot that I had to face.
- 1:13:24It changed the course of my career from
- 1:13:28thinking that I'd be on the East Coast or
- 1:13:30West Coast of Canada or the U.S. or even
- 1:13:33just travel around the world and doing
- 1:13:34marine biology stuff as much of a dream
- 1:13:36of that was I came back to
- 1:13:38Ontario where there's no ocean.
- 1:13:40There's the Great Lakes, the Sweetwater
- 1:13:41Ocean, but there's no ocean. And and I
- 1:13:44had a career here, which is very
- 1:13:46different from a lot of my colleagues and
- 1:13:48friends that are in
- 1:13:49that are in this industry.
- 1:13:49But that's the decision that I made.
- 1:13:52That's the adaptation I had to make. I
- 1:13:53didn't expect it to happen. And there are
- 1:13:55a lot of people who have
- 1:13:56different decisions to make.
- 1:13:58So there are some people who have taken,
- 1:14:00you know, they've taken the academic
- 1:14:01route. They've decided to go to
- 1:14:02undergraduate, graduate, master's, PhD,
- 1:14:05and then become a professor.
- 1:14:06And when they become a professor, they've
- 1:14:07reached their dream like this is amazing.
- 1:14:09And they realize, I actually don't like
- 1:14:12this job. And you're
- 1:14:14like, oh, what do I do?
- 1:14:15You know, some people move, especially to
- 1:14:18be a professor someplace and they don't
- 1:14:20love it. Let's say it happens to
- 1:14:22everybody, but there's some people who
- 1:14:23don't. And I've had I've
- 1:14:24had friends who have had that.
- 1:14:26And then they had to figure out what to
- 1:14:27do after that. They had to figure out
- 1:14:29where to go and what to do. Did they move
- 1:14:32from that place? Do they stay as a
- 1:14:33professor there and maybe not like it as
- 1:14:35much and be miserable? Or can they figure
- 1:14:37out if they're going to be happy?
- 1:14:38It's been it's very difficult the time
- 1:14:41and whatever decision they make, that's
- 1:14:43the decision to make is not right or
- 1:14:44wrong. It's just a
- 1:14:45decision they decide to make.
- 1:14:47But these these little pivot moments are
- 1:14:50extremely important and they happen more
- 1:14:53than you think, especially at 40. I
- 1:14:56reached 40 and I
- 1:14:58pivoted a couple of times.
- 1:14:59And I know a lot of people who have put I
- 1:15:01know some people who had a career in one
- 1:15:03thing, decided to become a teacher in
- 1:15:05another started their teaching, you know,
- 1:15:08practice at like 40 years old.
- 1:15:11Like there's so many different ways you
- 1:15:13can. Some people became cops or fire men
- 1:15:15or women or people like it's all
- 1:15:18different things that you can do. But 40
- 1:15:20seems to be that age where people pivot.
- 1:15:21I don't know if it's the beginning of the
- 1:15:22mid life crisis, but it's that that's
- 1:15:26just the pivot that
- 1:15:27I've seen people make.
- 1:15:28So it doesn't necessarily mean you're
- 1:15:30going to be in the same job all the time.
- 1:15:32There's probably not going to be the same
- 1:15:33job all the time, especially the way jobs
- 1:15:34are going these days. And and it's not
- 1:15:36necessarily that you are going to have
- 1:15:38the path that you think you're going to
- 1:15:39have. That's going to
- 1:15:40meander quite a bit.
- 1:15:41I co-host a podcast called the Beyond
- 1:15:43Jaws podcast with Dr. David Ebert. And we
- 1:15:45interview shark scientists and
- 1:15:47practitioners and conservationists all
- 1:15:50the time. Like every couple of weeks we
- 1:15:51put out an episode and we
- 1:15:52talk about their career.
- 1:15:53And when we talk about their career, a
- 1:15:56lot of times it meanders, they go in and
- 1:15:58out of studying sharks. So they'll study
- 1:16:00other fish or they'll say something
- 1:16:01completely different or they'll go
- 1:16:03somewhere completely different.
- 1:16:04Or they'll get out of the industry
- 1:16:05altogether just to make some money and
- 1:16:06then come back and they and they do that.
- 1:16:08And they proudly mentioned that because
- 1:16:10when you see their bit, a lot of these
- 1:16:11people are very well published and
- 1:16:13they're they're very well known.
- 1:16:15But people don't know about the
- 1:16:16intricacies of their career because
- 1:16:18they've just never heard it before. They
- 1:16:20don't know because all their reading is
- 1:16:21their papers. So we have them on a podcast again.
- 1:16:22We have them on a podcast to get to hear
- 1:16:23it. They're like, oh, OK, so so and so
- 1:16:25had this wonderful career, but it was in
- 1:16:27and out a little bit. It wasn't perfect.
- 1:16:30OK, mine doesn't have to be either. Your
- 1:16:32career does not your ocean conservation
- 1:16:34career does not have to be perfect.
- 1:16:37Let me repeat that your ocean
- 1:16:39conservation career does not have to be
- 1:16:40perfect. It's not a straight path. It's
- 1:16:43going to meander a bunch and you have to
- 1:16:45really you have to accept that.
- 1:16:47And maybe even like just just kind of
- 1:16:51know that it's coming. Anticipate the
- 1:16:54meanderness. That's a word. I don't know.
- 1:16:56But like you have to learn that because
- 1:16:58if you don't and you expect to be
- 1:17:00straight and something happens, you're
- 1:17:01going to think your career is a failure.
- 1:17:03And I would say as a coach, I always tell
- 1:17:05my kids like my my players fail, fail
- 1:17:08often, fail fast, fail often and learn
- 1:17:12from those mistakes or learn from those
- 1:17:14decisions and then get better and be
- 1:17:16better and you'll be stronger in the end.
- 1:17:17So the whole point of this podcast is
- 1:17:21having an ocean conservation career will
- 1:17:23make you stronger, will make you better
- 1:17:24as a person, but it won't be a straight
- 1:17:26path. It will meander. Be ready for it,
- 1:17:29anticipate it and enjoy the heck out of
- 1:17:31the process because it's a fun process.
- 1:17:33There's ups and downs and it's a great
- 1:17:35story and tell your story. Come on this
- 1:17:37podcast. Tell your story. Go on the
- 1:17:39Beyond Jobs podcast. Tell your story. We
- 1:17:41always want to hear people's stories
- 1:17:42because we want to share the experiences
- 1:17:44so that when people go through
- 1:17:45themselves, they're not alone.
- 1:17:46You're not alone. So many people had
- 1:17:49different types of stories. So I want to
- 1:17:51just mention that to you because I think
- 1:17:52it's really important that we share that,
- 1:17:54you know, ocean conservation careers are
- 1:17:57not a straight path.
- 1:17:58And I want you to know that. So for me to
- 1:18:00you, you're welcome. Enjoy the process.
- 1:18:05If you ever need help, reach out. I'm
- 1:18:06always there to help you out. You can DM
- 1:18:08me at how to protect the ocean. You can

- 1:18:12subscribe and hit that notification
- 1:18:14button to see all different types of episodes.
- 1:18:15As I mentioned the last episode, I'm
- 1:18:18doing things a little differently lately.
- 1:18:19I'm recording the raw audio podcast first
- 1:18:22and then I'm recording a more of a
- 1:18:24cleaned up version, more succinct version
- 1:18:26because YouTubers don't have the
- 1:18:27multitasking ability that audio
- 1:18:30podcasters do because the way the apps
- 1:18:32and the way the platform is.
- 1:18:33So they tend to watch more. So they tend
- 1:18:36to be a little less time and a little bit
- 1:18:38more edited or not edited, but just
- 1:18:40succinct and yeah, and we'll just see you
- 1:18:43soon. Those edited. This is the last non
- 1:18:45edited video for a while.
- 1:18:46I'll be editing more videos in a little
- 1:18:48bit, but they'll be coming out for a
- 1:18:51bunch. But I just I just want to get this
- 1:18:53off my chest because I think it's really important.
- 1:18:53I found that the kids that I taught last
- 1:18:57last week that I presented in front of,
- 1:18:59they really enjoyed it. They really took
- 1:19:00it to heart. And a lot of the questions
- 1:19:03that came out were about confidence. It's
- 1:19:04like, how did how confident were you
- 1:19:06every time? Like, do you ever question
- 1:19:07the path you were taking? And my answer
- 1:19:08to that was yes, yes, I did every single
- 1:19:11day. I still do. And I'm still
- 1:19:12questioning it because you never know if
- 1:19:14you're taking the right path, but there
- 1:19:15is no right path. Your path is the right
- 1:19:17path. So, you know, own that. Okay. So anyway, that's it for today's episode. If you want to get a hold of that, I'm going to be doing a video on how to do it.
- 1:19:35I can't really just I can just say that, or what it looks like. This video has an
- 1:19:36awesome feature on it, but the mph method
- 1:19:36page, hearingcentered hosting
- 1:19:37Thank you so much for joining me on
- 1:19:39today's episode of the how
- 1:19:40to protect the ocean podcast
- 1:19:41I'm your host Andrew Lewin from the true
- 1:19:43north strong and free. Have a great day.
- 1:19:45We'll talk to you next
