- 0:26Speaker 3: prompably presented by Attorney Frank Walker, Real Talk, real experience,
- 0:30Speaker 3: real results, Frank Walker Law dot Com. Let that conversation
- 0:34Speaker 3: begin on Let's talk.
- 0:37Speaker 4: Hello, ladies and gentlemen, missus Carl Lee with Let's Talk,
- 0:40Speaker 4: and we have a we have a great guest in today,
- 0:45Speaker 4: and uh, I'm gonna allow my co host, which is
- 0:49Speaker 4: Lise Odie and Hollis Lucy Lewis in the building. I'm
- 0:53Speaker 4: gonna let Hollis introduce them and trust me sit in
- 0:59Speaker 4: the whole show.
- 1:00Speaker 5: So we have a West Virginia legend, a pioneer when
- 1:06Speaker 5: it comes to you know, not only women's boxing, but
- 1:08Speaker 5: I would say women's athletics definitely one of probably the
- 1:13Speaker 5: first superstars of women's sports in general. In addition to boxing,
- 1:19Speaker 5: we have Christy Martin, a KA daughter of a coma.
- 1:27Speaker 6: Here back home in West Virginia.
- 1:29Speaker 4: Well, thank you and thank you for being on the
- 1:31Speaker 4: show and coming in the studio, I just have to
- 1:35Speaker 4: I just have to ask the question because.
- 1:39Speaker 2: I watched the show and.
- 1:43Speaker 4: I'm trying and I'm trying to figure out, like where
- 1:46Speaker 4: did the love.
- 1:48Speaker 2: Of boxing actually?
- 1:49Speaker 4: Like, Like, again, I realized that you kind of just
- 1:52Speaker 4: jumped into it and and and you found you found
- 1:55Speaker 4: that you were just great at it.
- 1:57Speaker 2: But what was the what was the thing?
- 1:59Speaker 7: Like?
- 1:59Speaker 2: When when did you wake up and say, you know what,
- 2:02Speaker 2: boxing is going to be my thing? You know what?
- 2:04Speaker 7: That is a great question because I'm still I'm still
- 2:07Speaker 7: trying to figure that out.
- 2:09Speaker 6: I don't know, because it's crazy. I mean, nobody I.
- 2:12Speaker 7: Had never seen a woman fight before. I didn't have
- 2:15Speaker 7: anybody in my family that was a boxer. I had
- 2:18Speaker 7: never been to a professional boxing match. I had been
- 2:21Speaker 7: to tough man contest. I don't know why I thought
- 2:24Speaker 7: it was a good idea other than the fact that
- 2:26Speaker 7: people told me I couldn't do it. And I got
- 2:29Speaker 7: that a little bit of if you tell me, I
- 2:31Speaker 7: can't git back.
- 2:32Speaker 4: So so I'm sorry, Hollyday, but this is a trigging
- 2:36Speaker 4: to be okay, So the.
- 2:38Speaker 2: Tough man kind of processed for you?
- 2:43Speaker 4: So did was that kind of like, Okay, I'm doing this,
- 2:46Speaker 4: I'm doing pretty good at it. I should I should
- 2:50Speaker 4: go to boxing or or you just it just was
- 2:54Speaker 4: that just a transition out of the blue, and and
- 2:57Speaker 4: that didn't have anything to do with the tough man stuff.
- 3:00Speaker 4: Didn't have anything to do with it, like oh I
- 3:02Speaker 4: might be a box.
- 3:03Speaker 6: Too, No, not really.
- 3:06Speaker 7: It was crazy because I did these couple tough my
- 3:09Speaker 7: contests back in Beckley, West Virminia, and and then I
- 3:14Speaker 7: got a call from a professional promoter out of Bristol,
- 3:18Speaker 7: Tennessee that asked me to come fight as girl.
- 3:20Speaker 6: Well I had won like four.
- 3:22Speaker 7: Times at the tough man thing, so they didn't want
- 3:25Speaker 7: me to do it anymore. And then I saw I thought,
- 3:27Speaker 7: you know what, I'm about to graduate from college. My
- 3:29Speaker 7: degree is in education. Let me go do this boxing
- 3:32Speaker 7: thing one time. So you know, when you're old like
- 3:35Speaker 7: I am now and people ask you that truth or
- 3:38Speaker 7: dare question, you could always say I guess You'll never
- 3:40Speaker 7: guess what I did. I did one professional boxing match.
- 3:44Speaker 7: So when I did that first fight, I really thought
- 3:46Speaker 7: it was going to be one and done. I had
- 3:48Speaker 7: no intentions of ever having a career being a fighter,
- 3:52Speaker 7: but so I go to Bristol, Tennessee, I fight the
- 3:56Speaker 7: promoter's girl, not understanding the business of boxing. When the
- 3:59Speaker 7: promoter caused you to fight his girl, all the cards
- 4:01Speaker 7: are stacked against right. So I beat the crap out
- 4:06Speaker 7: of this girl, knocked her down.
- 4:09Speaker 6: And it was a draw, and I'm like, oh, so
- 4:12Speaker 6: hold on, that sucks number one.
- 4:15Speaker 7: And then I'm like, this is not really not a
- 4:17Speaker 7: good story. I didn't win, I didn't lose. Asked me
- 4:19Speaker 7: what I do a rematch, and I'm like, of course,
- 4:21Speaker 7: So now I have a better story for when I'm
- 4:23Speaker 7: this age and I want to tell people that I
- 4:25Speaker 7: one time did a boxing match. So I went back
- 4:28Speaker 7: and I fought again, like two months later. Never been
- 4:31Speaker 7: in a boxing gym before, never had a coach, never anything.
- 4:34Speaker 6: But I knocked her.
- 4:35Speaker 7: Out, and oh my god, was that the greatest feeling
- 4:39Speaker 7: in the world. So I knocked this girl out and
- 4:42Speaker 7: the crowd goes crazy, and I'm like, oh, I love
- 4:45Speaker 7: this boxing. And but still never in a million years
- 4:49Speaker 7: could I imagine that I would be promoted by don
- 4:52Speaker 7: King fighting on those big cards.
- 4:54Speaker 6: You know, I never even dreamed those dreams.
- 4:56Speaker 2: Well, we're going to get to that.
- 4:57Speaker 5: But I just want to take a step back because
- 5:00Speaker 5: to boxing, prior to the tough man, you very athletic
- 5:04Speaker 5: basketball player, softball player. High school. You're from an area
- 5:09Speaker 5: I went to Mullins. Now that area is produced like
- 5:12Speaker 5: the Kurt Warners, the Nick Sabans, the d'An toni brothers. Like,
- 5:16Speaker 5: what was it during that era that just produced Christy Martin?
- 5:20Speaker 5: What was it during that era that produced such great athletes.
- 5:23Speaker 7: Well, I'm gonna tell you what produced Mallin's High school
- 5:26Speaker 7: great basketball players was coach Don Knuckles. And if people
- 5:29Speaker 7: here in West Virginia, at least my age, they're gonna
- 5:31Speaker 7: probably remember Don Knuckles being the head coach at Mon's
- 5:34Speaker 7: High School. Harry Brooks, the d'An toni brothers, Jerome Anderson,
- 5:38Speaker 7: Mike Anderson, those guys.
- 5:40Speaker 6: I mean, it's a little bit of town.
- 5:42Speaker 7: We're talking about a town of two thousand people, and
- 5:43Speaker 7: you have NBA guys coming there coming out.
- 5:47Speaker 6: Of the school. Unbelievable.
- 5:49Speaker 7: So I think that you know, coach Don Knuckles, and
- 5:52Speaker 7: he was like very good and so I got some
- 5:55Speaker 7: of that from him.
- 5:56Speaker 6: Though that struck a.
- 5:58Speaker 7: Little bit, you know, and when you beat somebody, let
- 6:01Speaker 7: them know you beat them. And I got a little
- 6:03Speaker 7: bit of that, and I got it from Don Knuckles.
- 6:05Speaker 5: So and on this show we talk a lot about
- 6:07Speaker 5: youth sports and youth development. So do you think that
- 6:10Speaker 5: just coming from that very athletic background, once you transition
- 6:14Speaker 5: to boxing, you were sort of a step ahead of
- 6:16Speaker 5: the other females in the ring because you were just
- 6:18Speaker 5: in general, you're just a good athlete. Besides, you know,
- 6:21Speaker 5: the talent you developed for boxing.
- 6:22Speaker 7: I think that, Yes, I think that I had a
- 6:24Speaker 7: little step up at the beginning other women because I
- 6:28Speaker 7: was an athlete, truly an athlete. I played played basketball,
- 6:31Speaker 7: played softball, I played basketball over at Concord. Yeah, so yeah,
- 6:35Speaker 7: I was in a little better shape, had a little
- 6:37Speaker 7: better coordination, and a lot more competitive drive.
- 6:40Speaker 4: There it is, And I think that and I can
- 6:45Speaker 4: feel that with you, you know understand, And I think
- 6:49Speaker 4: if you are that, if the person is that competitive,
- 6:52Speaker 4: they're not leaving the room without a w you know
- 6:55Speaker 4: what I'm saying. They're not gonna let anybody try to
- 6:58Speaker 4: get in front of them that they're not I don't win.
- 7:01Speaker 8: So yeah, I was just gonna ask you thank you
- 7:03Speaker 8: so much for being with us tonight. I was so exed.
- 7:05Speaker 8: I was so pumped about this last night. I'm watching
- 7:08Speaker 8: the movie and I'm like, oh gosh, I can't believe this.
- 7:10Speaker 8: But anyway, so you just mentioned Christy that your first
- 7:13Speaker 8: pro fight was a draw, but then your breakthrough fight
- 7:16Speaker 8: came through when you were on the Tyson Bruno card
- 7:19Speaker 8: in March of ninety six.
- 7:21Speaker 9: Correct, right, yeah, walk us through that. What was that
- 7:23Speaker 9: like for you?
- 7:24Speaker 8: This girl from coming from small town West Virginia in
- 7:26Speaker 8: the big you know the bright lights?
- 7:28Speaker 6: Are you kidding me? I'm from Mullins.
- 7:30Speaker 7: I had eighty six people graduated in my graduatingly excuse me, jeez,
- 7:36Speaker 7: And here I am fighting under Mike Tyson at the
- 7:38Speaker 7: you Jim Grand in Las Vegas. Yes, promoted by you
- 7:41Speaker 7: know the cards, Don King's show. We're on showtime, We're
- 7:44Speaker 7: on pay per view.
- 7:46Speaker 6: There's not even words to explain how I felt.
- 7:49Speaker 9: And you overwhelmed?
- 7:50Speaker 7: I mean you just yeah, of course, because look when
- 7:53Speaker 7: I remember getting into the ring and looking out and
- 7:57Speaker 7: I knew every person in the first couple of rows.
- 7:59Speaker 6: Did I know the person?
- 8:00Speaker 5: No?
- 8:00Speaker 6: I had seen every person on TV.
- 8:02Speaker 7: I mean, you know, SHA's there, sugary lives there, actors, actresses, everybody.
- 8:08Speaker 7: Everybody's there to see Mike Tyson, but I, you know,
- 8:10Speaker 7: I got the chance to entertain him a little bit
- 8:12Speaker 7: before Tyson came out.
- 8:14Speaker 5: And did you like understand the gravity of the moment
- 8:18Speaker 5: being that and I believe you were the first female
- 8:22Speaker 5: boxer to be in that spotlight. Did you understand sort
- 8:26Speaker 5: of the history that was being set that night?
- 8:28Speaker 6: No?
- 8:29Speaker 7: And I don't think I really understood it until recently,
- 8:32Speaker 7: probably two years ago, when Amanda, Amanda Serrano and.
- 8:36Speaker 6: Katie Taylor fought in Madison Square Garden.
- 8:39Speaker 7: And then I thought about, but what if that fight
- 8:42Speaker 7: hadn't happened in nineteen ninety six right with Sabody and
- 8:45Speaker 7: really got people interested in talking about women's boxing, would
- 8:49Speaker 7: this might have happened? And that's when I started really
- 8:53Speaker 7: realizing that, hey, I had a little input in building
- 8:55Speaker 7: women's boxing. Of course, there were women that had box
- 8:58Speaker 7: before me, way back eighteen hundreds women were boxing, believe
- 9:01Speaker 7: it or not, but no one had ever been given
- 9:03Speaker 7: the opportunity and exposure that Don King gave me.
- 9:08Speaker 2: I'm sorry, now go ahead, go ahead.
- 9:09Speaker 9: What was to Christy?
- 9:12Speaker 4: I can feel what was it about? Did you ever
- 9:15Speaker 4: did he ever articulate to you. Why you why why
- 9:19Speaker 4: did he pick you to be in that spotlight.
- 9:23Speaker 6: That's a really great question.
- 9:24Speaker 5: I mean at the time, for those who don't understand,
- 9:26Speaker 5: Don King was he was boxing.
- 9:28Speaker 2: He was boxing.
- 9:28Speaker 5: He had been boxing for thirty own you make that cat.
- 9:34Speaker 5: So did he ever say we're we're putting you in
- 9:37Speaker 5: the spot because never.
- 9:39Speaker 7: And he never gave me any like I'm gonna give
- 9:43Speaker 7: you a little edge because you're a female boxer.
- 9:45Speaker 3: No.
- 9:46Speaker 7: He promoted me just like he did his other the mailboxers.
- 9:49Speaker 7: He put me out there sink or swim. He put
- 9:51Speaker 7: me in opportunities just like he gave mail fighters. If
- 9:55Speaker 7: you go out there and put on a great show,
- 9:57Speaker 7: then you're gonna get the fight again.
- 9:59Speaker 6: And that was my thing.
- 10:00Speaker 7: Time I crossed through those ropes, I felt like I
- 10:02Speaker 7: had Don King on my shoulder and that I needed
- 10:04Speaker 7: to show show out and so that he would put
- 10:07Speaker 7: me on the next big show.
- 10:09Speaker 6: And that's that was kind of like the driving force.
- 10:12Speaker 7: And when I'd be tired, you know, I gotta keep punching,
- 10:14Speaker 7: keep punching, because Don King's sitting in row one and watching.
- 10:17Speaker 4: Wow and and and your power, you know, and again
- 10:21Speaker 4: I went back. Hollis was like, watch the movie. I said, well,
- 10:25Speaker 4: I've already watched it, but I turned around and watched
- 10:26Speaker 4: it again this morning, okay, And and there was there
- 10:29Speaker 4: was there was a conversation about you and the power
- 10:34Speaker 4: and your punching, and they compare you like to Mike Tyson,
- 10:38Speaker 4: and I'm like, okay, So if someone were to compare
- 10:42Speaker 4: me in the National Football League against somebody that great,
- 10:47Speaker 4: I don't know if if I.
- 10:48Speaker 2: Would ever come off of that cloud? What is that?
- 10:51Speaker 10: Like?
- 10:51Speaker 2: What is that? How does that make you feel?
- 10:53Speaker 4: Because in most in most cases, everybody thinks Mike Tyson
- 10:58Speaker 4: is if nothing, he's the probably the best puncher ever.
- 11:02Speaker 2: And that's who they're comparing you to. They're saying, that's
- 11:05Speaker 2: who you are.
- 11:06Speaker 6: Like awesome.
- 11:07Speaker 7: I mean, I'm a big Tyson fan and that's all
- 11:10Speaker 7: like Fraser fan, all the punchers.
- 11:12Speaker 6: That's why I like to watch.
- 11:14Speaker 7: So Yes, to be mentioned in that same sentence with
- 11:17Speaker 7: Tyson or any of those punchers is awesome. And and
- 11:20Speaker 7: I do believe that for whatever reason, and part of
- 11:23Speaker 7: them being a puncher, I think is in your mentality,
- 11:25Speaker 7: Like I wanted to hurt people, I wanted there are
- 11:29Speaker 7: some people that.
- 11:30Speaker 6: Want to just rounds.
- 11:31Speaker 7: No, I want to knock you out in the first round,
- 11:34Speaker 7: get my check and go home and get the you know,
- 11:36Speaker 7: started on the next the next one, get ready for
- 11:38Speaker 7: the next one.
- 11:39Speaker 6: I I just wanted to knock people out. That's what
- 11:41Speaker 6: I want to do.
- 11:42Speaker 4: It's crazy to me to to look at you and
- 11:45Speaker 4: hear what's coming out of your mouth, because it's like,
- 11:48Speaker 4: it doesn't like it's like, well, if you gave her,
- 11:51Speaker 4: I gave her a church hug and she still rock.
- 11:53Speaker 5: Hard and all that food, she probably still got a
- 11:59Speaker 5: nice right hook.
- 12:00Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean, it just doesn't it just it doesn't
- 12:05Speaker 4: seem like the person that I'm looking at, the person
- 12:08Speaker 4: that I'm talking to, is saying this, and I'm watching
- 12:12Speaker 4: it on television and seeing that this was this is
- 12:15Speaker 4: how it is.
- 12:16Speaker 2: It's crazy to me, That's what I don't.
- 12:19Speaker 7: Know, if you know, if you guys will remember Lucia Riker,
- 12:22Speaker 7: that was a big fight. It was supposed to be
- 12:23Speaker 7: the first million dollar fight between two women. That was
- 12:25Speaker 7: me and Lucia are supposed to fight each other back
- 12:27Speaker 7: in two or something. But she looked like a dude, right,
- 12:32Speaker 7: and I didn't, So everybody thought she was just going
- 12:35Speaker 7: to destroy me. So looks can be to see the
- 12:38Speaker 7: book by the cover and I do you know, I
- 12:41Speaker 7: hope that my smile invites people in and then boom.
- 12:47Speaker 5: That.
- 12:48Speaker 9: Is perfect.
- 12:50Speaker 8: So I know, in the parking lot when we were
- 12:52Speaker 8: waiting to come in, Christy, we were talking a little
- 12:54Speaker 8: bit about your promoting events right now for for boxing,
- 12:58Speaker 8: and mainly you're doing it for for male boxing events,
- 13:02Speaker 8: and so we talked a little bit about you know,
- 13:06Speaker 8: with female boxing, what do you what do you envision
- 13:09Speaker 8: for the future of it.
- 13:10Speaker 9: Do you feel like that.
- 13:10Speaker 8: It's it's going the way it should be going, or
- 13:12Speaker 8: do you feel like it's going in the wrong direction.
- 13:14Speaker 9: What's your opinion of that?
- 13:16Speaker 7: I think I love him or hate him. I think
- 13:19Speaker 7: Jake Paul's doing great things for women's boxing.
- 13:21Speaker 6: Okay, he has the card.
- 13:23Speaker 7: Now it's going to be the trilogy with with Taylor
- 13:25Speaker 7: and Soronto happening in Madison Square Garden and on All
- 13:28Speaker 7: Women's Show.
- 13:29Speaker 6: I don't really like the All Women's Show.
- 13:32Speaker 7: I think let's don't separate women's boxing from men's boxing.
- 13:35Speaker 6: Let's just have boxing.
- 13:37Speaker 7: So let's mix it up and let's have some guys
- 13:39Speaker 7: let's you know, Amanda and Katie Taylor be the main event,
- 13:42Speaker 7: but put some dudes on there too.
- 13:44Speaker 6: Sure, but anyway he's paying them. I mean I think
- 13:47Speaker 6: they're making like double digit millions.
- 13:52Speaker 5: So yeah, and to that point, I don't like that neither.
- 13:56Speaker 5: I think boxing does a poor job of being one note, right.
- 14:00Speaker 5: I think that you know, if you're gonna have a
- 14:02Speaker 5: big fight, you can have women at various weight classes.
- 14:05Speaker 5: You can have men in various weight classes. Like you
- 14:07Speaker 5: don't have to have an all mid aweight card, all
- 14:10Speaker 5: heavyweight card, all women, all men. I think it's better
- 14:13Speaker 5: when you mix it up and you have those prominent
- 14:15Speaker 5: fights at each different weight class and gender and everything
- 14:19Speaker 5: like that.
- 14:20Speaker 7: Because I think that this will a lot of people
- 14:23Speaker 7: are gonna tune in because Taylor Suana is such a
- 14:25Speaker 7: good it's a great fight. It's been a great fight
- 14:27Speaker 7: two times right now, It's gonna be a great fight
- 14:29Speaker 7: the third time.
- 14:30Speaker 6: And so they're gonna see some of these other female fighters.
- 14:33Speaker 7: But it's still gonna I think it's still gonna divide
- 14:37Speaker 7: the fans. We're gonna still have some fans that are
- 14:40Speaker 7: not gonna watch because it's all women, and that's just
- 14:42Speaker 7: probably that might be the old school guys. Maybe the
- 14:44Speaker 7: younger male generation will watch it, and then you're, yeah,
- 14:48Speaker 7: it's you're gonna get some of the streaky guys also
- 14:51Speaker 7: gonna watch it.
- 14:53Speaker 6: I met.
- 14:54Speaker 7: We gotta call it what it is because early in
- 14:56Speaker 7: my career I had I had guys sending me messages.
- 14:59Speaker 6: What I them and they wanted to pay me to
- 15:01Speaker 6: spar them. I had freaks like no, no, we like
- 15:07Speaker 6: to see women hit each other. We want to see
- 15:10Speaker 6: and it was a sexual thing. Yeah, so yeah, I
- 15:13Speaker 6: don't know, Yeah, I don't know. That's so that that
- 15:16Speaker 6: part of that keeps playing in my mind when I.
- 15:17Speaker 7: Think about an all women's card, like I think it's
- 15:21Speaker 7: it hurts women's.
- 15:21Speaker 4: Box And you said something also, you you talked about
- 15:26Speaker 4: somewhat along the same lines that you didn't you don't
- 15:29Speaker 4: necessarily like being considered like the best female boxer. Why
- 15:34Speaker 4: are you just not called a boxer? Why do they
- 15:38Speaker 4: have to put.
- 15:40Speaker 2: The female part in it?
- 15:42Speaker 4: So you so, because what you're saying is when you
- 15:45Speaker 4: say it's female, you're saying it's something less than or.
- 15:51Speaker 2: Or whatever.
- 15:52Speaker 7: Right, I agree with you, well exactly, And that was
- 15:54Speaker 7: the whole thing when when people left the arena, I
- 15:56Speaker 7: wanted them to say.
- 15:57Speaker 6: Wow, Chrissy's a good fighter, a good boxers. I want
- 16:03Speaker 6: to say she's good.
- 16:04Speaker 8: You think it's because it's been predominantly males. I mean
- 16:07Speaker 8: throughout the years, what people are attracted to on the television,
- 16:10Speaker 8: that's probably why they kind of like categorize it.
- 16:13Speaker 9: Probably Yeah, yeah, I mean I do.
- 16:17Speaker 6: I feel like it. Maybe I'm blinded, blinding my own self, but.
- 16:21Speaker 7: I believe that I did crossover and people started to say, Wow,
- 16:24Speaker 7: she's just a good fighter. And that's what they're saying
- 16:27Speaker 7: about Taylor and Toronto. I mean, they're just good fighters.
- 16:29Speaker 7: It doesn't matter if they're women or sure what.
- 16:32Speaker 2: Yes, I see. I would, I would.
- 16:33Speaker 5: I would slightly disagree with that because I think that
- 16:35Speaker 5: there is a is a space just for like women's sports.
- 16:39Speaker 5: And I would argue, and we've argued on this show
- 16:42Speaker 5: that when I look at women's boxing, it's it's more entertaining.
- 16:46Speaker 5: When I look at women's basketball now, it is more entertaining,
- 16:49Speaker 5: it's it's a better watch.
- 16:51Speaker 2: So I think it.
- 16:52Speaker 5: So I think you know, to to to to promote
- 16:55Speaker 5: and and to you know, to say, hey, this is
- 16:58Speaker 5: a women's sport. This is a win things. It's not
- 17:00Speaker 5: necessarily a bad thing. I think where it hurts, to
- 17:03Speaker 5: your point, it hurts when it comes to the final
- 17:06Speaker 5: because they try to lessen it because it's a women's thing,
- 17:09Speaker 5: not because it's it's a better watch, I believe.
- 17:12Speaker 2: And I'll say that, and I'll say this to agree
- 17:14Speaker 2: with Hollis.
- 17:17Speaker 4: When when I say female sports, I'm saying it in
- 17:20Speaker 4: a in a in a in a positive. I'm not saying, oh,
- 17:24Speaker 4: it's not a men's thing, you know, it's it's female
- 17:28Speaker 4: and it's something valuable and something that's important. I don't know,
- 17:33Speaker 4: And I and I say that to say to try
- 17:36Speaker 4: to figure out, like the separation, I don't think. I
- 17:41Speaker 4: can't say it's always the separation isn't always negative.
- 17:45Speaker 2: But I think for the most part, I think it
- 17:47Speaker 2: can be. It can be. It can but I think.
- 17:50Speaker 4: For most men, and I'll say, especially if you're an athlete,
- 17:53Speaker 4: if you've been an athlete, I think when you're saying female,
- 17:56Speaker 4: she's the best female.
- 17:57Speaker 2: Or she's great, you know, I don't.
- 18:01Speaker 4: I don't that My intent is not that it's not
- 18:04Speaker 4: like I'm looking at you.
- 18:06Speaker 8: A lesser as lesser. You're looking at it as the home,
- 18:11Speaker 8: the whole, as the whole.
- 18:12Speaker 5: Yes, And that's why, like in the intro, that's why
- 18:14Speaker 5: when I when I refer to you, I think to
- 18:17Speaker 5: limit you to boxing is very limited in and of itself,
- 18:21Speaker 5: because I think it was a gateway to sports, right,
- 18:25Speaker 5: because a lot of us grew up watching boxing, Right,
- 18:28Speaker 5: that was.
- 18:28Speaker 2: The big thing.
- 18:29Speaker 5: That was like the Super Bowl every three months, right,
- 18:31Speaker 5: and we get to see, you know, a female boxer
- 18:34Speaker 5: take the spotlight. And now I think what we're seeing
- 18:37Speaker 5: twenty five thirty years later is just the the proliferation
- 18:41Speaker 5: of female sports. So when you talk about, like I said, basketball, boxing, softball,
- 18:46Speaker 5: to me, it's going to be the next great. Yes,
- 18:47Speaker 5: softball is going to be it, you know, in the future,
- 18:50Speaker 5: I think. So, I just I love the idea of
- 18:53Speaker 5: but I have four daughters, so I'm I'm gonna you
- 18:56Speaker 5: know what I mean. So I just definitely love the
- 18:58Speaker 5: idea of women's and kind of what it represents. But
- 19:02Speaker 5: what I wanted to ask is like kind of going
- 19:03Speaker 5: through your your career, once you get you know, you
- 19:07Speaker 5: have those first couple of fights, you have the you're
- 19:10Speaker 5: in that spotlight kind of what was your mindset moving
- 19:15Speaker 5: forward as far as like, were you chasing sort of championships,
- 19:21Speaker 5: you chasing the spotlight, or you chasing just straight up
- 19:23Speaker 5: knockouts you just want to be just the best? Or
- 19:26Speaker 5: is like what was your mindset after those first couple
- 19:29Speaker 5: of big fights.
- 19:29Speaker 7: So it was just I wanted to be the best
- 19:32Speaker 7: that was out there, and at that particular time, the
- 19:36Speaker 7: major organizations didn't even have they didn't recognize women champions.
- 19:41Speaker 7: So the WBC, which is to me, the green belt,
- 19:45Speaker 7: you know, that's the one everybody wants, they actually named
- 19:47Speaker 7: me an honorary champion now sitting. And then a couple
- 19:51Speaker 7: of years later they started ranking women and started actually
- 19:54Speaker 7: sanctioning their fights, and at WBA did the same thing.
- 19:57Speaker 7: They gave an honorary title. And that was good enough
- 20:00Speaker 7: because I didn't want to fight for the women's titles.
- 20:02Speaker 6: I didn't.
- 20:02Speaker 7: I didn't feel like I wanted to be part of boxing.
- 20:05Speaker 7: And what I felt like was part of boxing.
- 20:07Speaker 6: Was the WBC, the WBA, the IVF, those.
- 20:10Speaker 7: Guys that have been established, not a women's organization. I
- 20:13Speaker 7: wanted to be a fighter, Okay, that makes it right.
- 20:16Speaker 6: I mean I wanted to be a fighter, So I
- 20:18Speaker 6: didn't give credibility to the women's.
- 20:21Speaker 5: So did you ever, like what what championships did you
- 20:24Speaker 5: hold during your career?
- 20:25Speaker 6: The WBC, which the World Boxing Council.
- 20:28Speaker 2: Okay, nice? Hmmm.
- 20:31Speaker 4: When you look at when you look at sports today
- 20:34Speaker 4: and you see the women's sports, do you have one
- 20:40Speaker 4: that you think, what is your favorite sport?
- 20:43Speaker 2: Is it?
- 20:43Speaker 4: Is it still boxing or is it something else? And
- 20:47Speaker 4: do you feel like that the that the young ladies
- 20:49Speaker 4: are representing their sports the way that they should.
- 20:54Speaker 7: Well, I still watch a lot of boxing. I don't
- 20:56Speaker 7: see a lot of women's boxing because it's not.
- 20:59Speaker 6: You don't see it TV.
- 21:00Speaker 7: You know. I watched a little bit of basketball because
- 21:03Speaker 7: I think Caitlyn Clark is.
- 21:04Speaker 6: A bad app.
- 21:10Speaker 7: But my favorite time of year probably is college football,
- 21:12Speaker 7: you know, Okay.
- 21:14Speaker 6: When August rolls around, I'm all about Saturday.
- 21:16Speaker 5: So speaking of just of women's box and I know
- 21:19Speaker 5: one of the sort of the controversies is the time
- 21:22Speaker 5: limit per round. So currently, if you don't know, out there,
- 21:26Speaker 5: women fight two minute rounds. Men fight three minute rounds.
- 21:29Speaker 5: And I think you women's have a max round limit
- 21:32Speaker 5: of ten or is it eight?
- 21:34Speaker 2: It's ten?
- 21:34Speaker 5: So what do you think about adding that extra minute,
- 21:37Speaker 5: because a lot of the conversation is like, we'll see
- 21:39Speaker 5: more knockouts if we add the extra minute.
- 21:41Speaker 7: Okay, So I'm glad you brought that up because when
- 21:44Speaker 7: I first started back in nineteen eighty nine, a long
- 21:46Speaker 7: time ago, I fought three minute rounds because it was
- 21:50Speaker 7: just like the guys, I mean, women's boxing was new.
- 21:52Speaker 7: Somewhere along the line, it got cut down to two
- 21:54Speaker 7: minute rounds, but guess what, I still knocked out thirty
- 21:57Speaker 7: one people.
- 21:59Speaker 6: So I understand why it's such a big deal. Oh,
- 22:03Speaker 6: we need that extra minute to knock people out. No,
- 22:06Speaker 6: you don't.
- 22:06Speaker 7: You can knock them out in two minutes if you
- 22:08Speaker 7: can punch and and that's the whole thing, because in
- 22:12Speaker 7: that two to three minute the fight becomes boring, especially
- 22:16Speaker 7: when you get two rounds. Seven eight nineteen. I said, actually, recently,
- 22:21Speaker 7: I'm not sure it would be a bad thing if
- 22:23Speaker 7: the guys started fighting two minute rounds, because some of
- 22:25Speaker 7: the guy fights have been very boring lately.
- 22:28Speaker 6: And that's in jest. I don't mean that, but.
- 22:32Speaker 2: I agree with that.
- 22:35Speaker 7: I liked because let's go just go out there and
- 22:38Speaker 7: like punch from bell to bell, let's be exciting. Let's
- 22:40Speaker 7: let's let the fans leave talking about our fights. And
- 22:44Speaker 7: I don't think it's a bad thing. And we're not
- 22:45Speaker 7: gonna get paid more by fighting an extra minute. We're
- 22:47Speaker 7: gonna get paid.
- 22:48Speaker 5: To say, And one of the like again, I'm I'm
- 22:51Speaker 5: a fan of just boxing a general male female, And
- 22:53Speaker 5: one of like, I like Alicia Bumgardner, I like Christian Seals,
- 22:56Speaker 5: but one of the I guess that the criticisms of
- 23:02Speaker 5: Christian Shields, who probably is at the top of the
- 23:05Speaker 5: pecking order when it comes to women boxing, is just
- 23:08Speaker 5: the lack of knockout power, like.
- 23:11Speaker 2: From a technical.
- 23:14Speaker 5: From a technical standpoint, for somebody who knows what, what
- 23:18Speaker 5: do you contribute that to? Because she looks strong, she
- 23:22Speaker 5: looks fit, I mean, but she just lacks knockout power.
- 23:26Speaker 7: To knock someone out, you have to be willing to
- 23:28Speaker 7: put yourself in position to be knocked out. You cannot
- 23:34Speaker 7: be scared, you cannot have fear, you can't you have
- 23:36Speaker 7: to have the dog in you. You can talk dog
- 23:40Speaker 7: all you want. It's got to show me.
- 23:44Speaker 2: And see.
- 23:48Speaker 8: That.
- 23:49Speaker 4: See to me, that sounds like that sounds like a
- 23:51Speaker 4: football conversation, Like like if I just heard part of
- 23:55Speaker 4: that that could be a football.
- 23:56Speaker 2: Like you either love to hit or you just you
- 24:00Speaker 2: just don't.
- 24:02Speaker 5: And but I think, but I think that the point
- 24:04Speaker 5: is like you gotta be willing to get hit, exactly hit,
- 24:09Speaker 5: but I'm hit, I don't want to get.
- 24:13Speaker 4: Okay, yeah, you're horrible, you know, for me as and
- 24:21Speaker 4: having a receiver, that receiver's got to be able to
- 24:24Speaker 4: be willing to want to get hit or knows he's
- 24:26Speaker 4: gonna get hit and he's okay, or and or hit me.
- 24:30Speaker 8: Because I think the keywords are no fear, no fear period.
- 24:34Speaker 4: You just have to you can't and you cannot have
- 24:40Speaker 4: I just can't.
- 24:40Speaker 2: To me, boxing would be.
- 24:45Speaker 4: The sport that you cannot run from, Like if you
- 24:48Speaker 4: get in the ring, like I'm not putting on no gloves,
- 24:51Speaker 4: you you can't. You can't put gloves on me and
- 24:54Speaker 4: sit me on that chair and hit bail and think
- 24:56Speaker 4: I'm coming out.
- 24:57Speaker 5: But but I think too, Like now I think what
- 24:59Speaker 5: happened is now is that there's a lot of like
- 25:02Speaker 5: branding around everybody. So now the conversation is like, Okay,
- 25:07Speaker 5: I can't afford to take that knockdown. I can't afford
- 25:11Speaker 5: to take that knockout, because even if I win the fight,
- 25:15Speaker 5: it could quote unquote hurt my brand. And I don't
- 25:18Speaker 5: think that probably existed twenty five thirty years ago.
- 25:21Speaker 2: It wasn't necessarily like that.
- 25:23Speaker 5: It was just a Warriors type of sport, where now
- 25:25Speaker 5: it's like it's just a it's a sport.
- 25:28Speaker 6: And that's why we don't see wars anymore.
- 25:30Speaker 7: That's why we don't see That's how long has it
- 25:33Speaker 7: been since you were jumping up at your TV, like
- 25:36Speaker 7: right at the front of your TV, like, oh my god,
- 25:38Speaker 7: oh my god, going crazy because the fight is so exciting.
- 25:42Speaker 7: You know somebody's about to get knocked out, and then
- 25:44Speaker 7: you don't know which one.
- 25:45Speaker 4: Somebody and you don't know, you don't know, like for me,
- 25:48Speaker 4: I could be honest, I don't think I know in
- 25:52Speaker 4: the men's division, like I don't know who's the guy
- 25:55Speaker 4: who's knocking everybody out, You know.
- 25:58Speaker 2: What I'm saying.
- 25:59Speaker 6: Yeah, I think very retired.
- 26:01Speaker 5: I feel fury and wilder, But I mean even that
- 26:04Speaker 5: fight was a technical mess. But it was like and
- 26:07Speaker 5: I'm talking the first one, not the whatever the second
- 26:10Speaker 5: and third one, but the first one was it has
- 26:13Speaker 5: semblance of that, but that was probably the last ones
- 26:15Speaker 5: I saw that was really like a back and forth.
- 26:18Speaker 7: That was a great heavyweight fight. I mean they were
- 26:20Speaker 7: both going at it. But yeah, I mean, we just
- 26:23Speaker 7: don't have that warrior mentality. We have a lot of
- 26:27Speaker 7: people talking to a lot of people selling their brand,
- 26:29Speaker 7: a lot of people talking social media crap, but no
- 26:33Speaker 7: one's producing when they get in the ring.
- 26:35Speaker 6: And that's why I as a.
- 26:36Speaker 7: Promoter, I just want to find that old school dude
- 26:38Speaker 7: that wants to train his butt off and go out
- 26:40Speaker 7: there and just fight.
- 26:42Speaker 6: I mean, put on a show for the fans, knock
- 26:45Speaker 6: people out. And I have it.
- 26:47Speaker 7: Victor Hernandez. He's a little one twenty six pounder. He
- 26:51Speaker 7: likes to knock people out and he does a little
- 26:52Speaker 7: shimmy right on.
- 26:53Speaker 6: Top of him, like at least of my wife. She
- 26:57Speaker 6: manages him and she's like, he needs to stop doing that.
- 26:59Speaker 7: I'm like, absolutely knocked because everybody leaves here, they either
- 27:04Speaker 7: love him or hating him, it doesn't matter, but they're
- 27:06Speaker 7: going to buy a ticket to see him fight again exactly.
- 27:08Speaker 5: And I had to shout out Tang Davis too. I
- 27:11Speaker 5: think he has that what I mean, his shots are
- 27:13Speaker 5: devastating to be what.
- 27:15Speaker 7: One he He is one of those guys that you
- 27:19Speaker 7: sit there, you sit there and you see him getting
- 27:21Speaker 7: out box and you see him losing, and you see
- 27:22Speaker 7: him but you know.
- 27:25Speaker 9: At one just takes one, just takes one.
- 27:28Speaker 8: And I think technically sounds sorry you get ready ahead?
- 27:31Speaker 9: Okay.
- 27:31Speaker 8: So, so Christy, you're talking about putting yourself out there
- 27:34Speaker 8: to get, you know, possibly knocked out, in order to
- 27:36Speaker 8: knock someone out. So I'm going to take you back
- 27:37Speaker 8: to August twenty third, two thousand and three when you
- 27:41Speaker 8: fought Layla Ali and so that strategy didn't work quite
- 27:45Speaker 8: as well that fight, correct, because I think you guys
- 27:49Speaker 8: went four rounds and.
- 27:50Speaker 9: She she knocked you out. Did you did you ever
- 27:53Speaker 9: see I took a knee? You took a knee?
- 27:56Speaker 6: Difference?
- 28:00Speaker 5: Right?
- 28:04Speaker 9: Is that a fight that you have ever regretted taking on?
- 28:07Speaker 5: Is that?
- 28:08Speaker 2: No?
- 28:09Speaker 9: Not, even with the outcome the way it was, you
- 28:10Speaker 9: were good with it.
- 28:11Speaker 7: Yeah. I just wish I could do it again because
- 28:13Speaker 7: I feel like, I really really feel like it was
- 28:17Speaker 7: whomever hit who first, and she hit me first on
- 28:20Speaker 7: that night. I feel like we would have had you know,
- 28:22Speaker 7: if we would have done it again, I still had
- 28:24Speaker 7: a chance.
- 28:26Speaker 6: She's big, jumped up a big one pounds right.
- 28:31Speaker 7: Oh yeah, I went from I was fighting at one
- 28:33Speaker 7: forty two three and then I weighed one sixty two,
- 28:37Speaker 7: which I really lot. I weighed with fatigues on in,
- 28:42Speaker 7: quarters in my pockets, army boots, the whole thing.
- 28:44Speaker 6: I weighed one forty seven.
- 28:45Speaker 5: But even And that's one thing I always wondered. I
- 28:47Speaker 5: always wanted to ask a professional boxer because I know
- 28:50Speaker 5: one of my favorite boxer was Roy Jones Junior. I
- 28:53Speaker 5: love Roy Jones Jr. But he lost himself when he
- 28:57Speaker 5: ganged all the weight to move up the heavyweight. Then
- 28:59Speaker 5: he tried to go back down the well to weight.
- 29:01Speaker 5: So physically, when you are going from like a basically
- 29:05Speaker 5: a fifteen to twenty pound difference, how did that? Were
- 29:08Speaker 5: you sluggage in the fight? Like, how would you like,
- 29:12Speaker 5: how would you assess your physicality during the fight?
- 29:14Speaker 6: But I really didn't gain the weight. I still was
- 29:16Speaker 6: one forty seven.
- 29:17Speaker 2: Oh you didn't gain it at all?
- 29:18Speaker 7: No? No, I yea with army fatigues on, boots and
- 29:24Speaker 7: quarters in my pockets.
- 29:25Speaker 2: So you were twenty pounds lighter.
- 29:28Speaker 7: Okay, that's tough, tough, but I still believed in my
- 29:32Speaker 7: punching power, and I believe that if I hit it
- 29:34Speaker 7: on the chin and I thought I would, you know
- 29:37Speaker 7: that I would, I would win.
- 29:39Speaker 4: And it is when you when you when you talk
- 29:43Speaker 4: about that, when you're spilling that out to us, is
- 29:46Speaker 4: there something in your mind that says, like I wish
- 29:49Speaker 4: I could have rethought that and done it differently, Like
- 29:54Speaker 4: would you have wanted to maybe gain weight or any
- 29:58Speaker 4: of that.
- 29:58Speaker 7: No, but I really I I really really thought that Layla,
- 30:01Speaker 7: because she's so big and she's so tall, that she
- 30:04Speaker 7: was gonna come out because she never came out and
- 30:05Speaker 7: like jumped on an opponent. So I really thought she's
- 30:08Speaker 7: gonna use her size, she's gonna jab me. She we're
- 30:10Speaker 7: gonna we're gonna like work into this ten round fight.
- 30:13Speaker 7: That's not what happened. She came right out, jumped on me,
- 30:15Speaker 7: hit me really good on top of my head with
- 30:17Speaker 7: the right hand.
- 30:18Speaker 6: First round. I was done. She just didn't know I
- 30:22Speaker 6: was done.
- 30:23Speaker 7: I thought I was sideways and I asked Jim in
- 30:25Speaker 7: my corner, I'm like, am I walking sideways?
- 30:27Speaker 6: And he said, oh, no, you're fine, You're fine. Well, yeah, no,
- 30:31Speaker 6: I I was done.
- 30:32Speaker 7: First round wow, and I kept fighting, you know, thinking
- 30:35Speaker 7: it was gonna come back.
- 30:36Speaker 6: I would get back, but I didn't.

- 32:07Speaker 4: it took. Let's just say for a huge fight that
- 32:11Speaker 4: you get you're getting ready to fight, how long? And
- 32:16Speaker 4: somewhat of an idea of what you would put yourself through,
- 32:20Speaker 4: not just the boxing piece of it, but like whether
- 32:22Speaker 4: it be running whatever that is, what what commitment did
- 32:26Speaker 4: you have to put in?
- 32:28Speaker 2: Food wise, all that kind of stuff.
- 32:31Speaker 7: So food wise is probably the hardest thing because I
- 32:33Speaker 7: love chocolate.
- 32:38Speaker 6: And I love Mexican food, So it was it was hard,
- 32:43Speaker 6: but yeah, no, I got up every morning early.
- 32:45Speaker 7: I ran three three and a half miles because Angelo
- 32:48Speaker 7: Dundee said, you're not a runner, you know you're three miles.
- 32:51Speaker 6: That's what Ali did.
- 32:52Speaker 7: So I figured if the greatest did it, I'll be okay.
- 32:55Speaker 7: So my little track was three point two actually, and
- 32:58Speaker 7: then I would do sprints and then I would go
- 33:00Speaker 7: to the gym and work about somewhere between twenty and
- 33:03Speaker 7: thirty rounds. That was hand pads, heavy bag, shadow boxing, jumping, rope, speedback,
- 33:08Speaker 7: all those things, and then I would go back to
- 33:10Speaker 7: the gym inspar like three days a week. So you know,
- 33:15Speaker 7: it was just boxing boxing. I watched fights, I watched
- 33:17Speaker 7: my opponent. It was one hundred percent. My focus was
- 33:21Speaker 7: on boxing, So.
- 33:22Speaker 4: There wasn't much time for any any like. So when
- 33:24Speaker 4: you were off, you were probably more so watching.
- 33:28Speaker 6: I was never off, I really wasn't.
- 33:30Speaker 7: I just because Donkey could call me anytime, and when
- 33:34Speaker 7: he called, I was. Actually one time I was home
- 33:37Speaker 7: at Christmas here in West Virginia and he called me
- 33:40Speaker 7: on Christmas Day and told me I was going to
- 33:41Speaker 7: fight January twelfth or fourteenth. So I wow, got in
- 33:46Speaker 7: the car and drove back to Florida to be ready
- 33:49Speaker 7: for the fight.
- 33:50Speaker 6: The good thing was I was running, I was in shape.
- 33:53Speaker 2: So because you were, you were still doing all your stuff.
- 33:56Speaker 7: Always ready, Because how am I going to tell don King, no,
- 33:59Speaker 7: I'm not ready.
- 34:00Speaker 6: Because you mightn't do that call again.
- 34:02Speaker 7: Right, So that's one thing I tell my guys, I'm like,
- 34:05Speaker 7: you have to always be ready because some major promoter
- 34:08Speaker 7: might call me and say, hey, we need one hundred
- 34:10Speaker 7: and thirty pounder to fight so and so because some
- 34:14Speaker 7: just fell out.
- 34:16Speaker 6: Be ready, be ready. You have to be ready. You're
- 34:18Speaker 6: a professional fighter. That means that's your job. Be ready
- 34:21Speaker 6: all the time. You have to go to work every day,
- 34:23Speaker 6: whatever you do. Be ready.
- 34:25Speaker 5: So coming from like I said, the story boxing career
- 34:30Speaker 5: and now you are a promoter, So walk us through
- 34:33Speaker 5: that steps like how did you get involved in promotions
- 34:35Speaker 5: and kind of what are you looking forward to on
- 34:37Speaker 5: that end?
- 34:38Speaker 6: So I kept trying to find a way to fit
- 34:41Speaker 6: into boxing and what am I going to do? My
- 34:42Speaker 6: career is over. I tried training fighters. No one wants
- 34:47Speaker 6: to work hard enough coaching. Yeah, that wasn't for me.
- 34:55Speaker 6: For me, let me, let me get with the promotion.
- 34:58Speaker 7: And my goal is to be on somebody's ride that
- 35:01Speaker 7: gets to put one of those title belts around their waist,
- 35:04Speaker 7: because I know how excited.
- 35:05Speaker 6: That was for me and how I felt so proud, and.
- 35:08Speaker 7: So I would be so proud to help somebody get
- 35:11Speaker 7: that title and put that around the waist.
- 35:13Speaker 4: Do you find it hard to find the person that
- 35:17Speaker 4: matches up with what you want to be able to
- 35:21Speaker 4: give because and Hollins was talking about coaching, like because
- 35:25Speaker 4: I think players who played and was committed to it
- 35:29Speaker 4: to the game. Today, it's hard to coach because you
- 35:33Speaker 4: don't you don't feel like you're getting from your players
- 35:36Speaker 4: that the commitment that.
- 35:39Speaker 2: That you that you feel you want to put in.
- 35:41Speaker 7: So you want back what you gave and and and
- 35:47Speaker 7: these young guys don't want to give back.
- 35:49Speaker 6: They don't want to work that hard.
- 35:51Speaker 7: I actually had a fighter here that was from from Charleston,
- 35:54Speaker 7: Anthony Sevilla.
- 35:57Speaker 6: On his behalf.
- 35:58Speaker 7: He called me once and he said, I have an
- 36:00Speaker 7: opportunity to go to fire fighting school and get a
- 36:04Speaker 7: job at the fire department. And I told him, I said, look, Anthony,
- 36:07Speaker 7: you could break your hand tomorrow in the boxing gym
- 36:11Speaker 7: and never be able to fight again.
- 36:12Speaker 6: Go do that. And he did, and so that's his career.
- 36:16Speaker 7: But I was so excited about Oh, I have this
- 36:18Speaker 7: West Virginia fighter. I had him wearing blue and gold
- 36:20Speaker 7: gloves coming after the country Roads.
- 36:23Speaker 2: Oh.
- 36:24Speaker 6: I was excited.
- 36:25Speaker 7: But that didn't work out. But yeah, that's one of
- 36:28Speaker 7: the things I want from my fighters. I want to
- 36:31Speaker 7: feel like they're working as hard as I work and
- 36:33Speaker 7: put in as much as I did and love it.
- 36:36Speaker 7: You have to love it because normal people do not
- 36:39Speaker 7: get hit in the head for a living.
- 36:40Speaker 5: But I think that's sort of the missing link. I
- 36:45Speaker 5: think that you can have all the talent, you can
- 36:47Speaker 5: have ability, you can really have everything, but in not
- 36:51Speaker 5: just well particularly boxing, but any combat sport, any you know,
- 36:55Speaker 5: collision sport, you really really really.
- 36:58Speaker 2: Have to love it.
- 36:59Speaker 5: And I think that's what's separates those professionals from amateurs,
- 37:03Speaker 5: those who are okay good from great. You have to
- 37:07Speaker 5: like love it. You have to be in love with it.
- 37:10Speaker 5: Not only you know just what happens on fight night,
- 37:12Speaker 5: but you have to be in love with probably the
- 37:14Speaker 5: whole process of it.
- 37:15Speaker 7: Absolutely, And that's the You're so right though about like
- 37:19Speaker 7: social media and all this stuff, the branding, it's just taken.
- 37:22Speaker 6: I feel like now we have fighters that that's.
- 37:25Speaker 7: All they're worried about is their brand and their social
- 37:28Speaker 7: media accounts on how many followers they have, and they
- 37:31Speaker 7: forget to go to the gym and learn the basics
- 37:34Speaker 7: and to learn how to be a fighter. But they're
- 37:38Speaker 7: using boxing to promote themselves. I mean, Jake Paul's making
- 37:43Speaker 7: us a lot of money.
- 37:45Speaker 4: And promoting yourself doesn't necessarily whether and I'm going to
- 37:49Speaker 4: use football promoting yourself, you know, all over Facebook, all
- 37:53Speaker 4: social media.
- 37:54Speaker 2: It doesn't make you a great player.
- 37:56Speaker 4: Just because you say that, you know you you had
- 38:00Speaker 4: three sacks in a game. That doesn't qualify you as
- 38:05Speaker 4: being a great player, or even a great defensive lineman
- 38:08Speaker 4: for that matter.
- 38:08Speaker 2: You know what I'm saying.
- 38:09Speaker 4: But I think they think if they get a thousand views,
- 38:15Speaker 4: they're good.
- 38:17Speaker 2: That's all I need.
- 38:18Speaker 8: Yes, what is a whole different world out there now,
- 38:21Speaker 8: isn't it all of us? It's kind of left me.
- 38:24Speaker 8: But anyway, so Christy, I'm going to go back a
- 38:26Speaker 8: little bit. My husband and I I think we've all
- 38:28Speaker 8: alluded to watching your movie Deal with the Devil, and
- 38:32Speaker 8: and you know, we knew about all your great accomplishments
- 38:35Speaker 8: in boxing and all the things that you did, you know,
- 38:39Speaker 8: in your past career, but we did not have the
- 38:42Speaker 8: idea of the dark times you endured during that period
- 38:47Speaker 8: as well.
- 38:48Speaker 9: Was that film.
- 38:49Speaker 8: Difficult for you to make because of that? Because of
- 38:53Speaker 8: the history of the dark times with your ex husband.
- 38:56Speaker 6: I think it was very important for me to to do.
- 39:01Speaker 7: As I said, I'm pretty sure. I said this in
- 39:03Speaker 7: the documentary. I haven't watched it for a while, but
- 39:05Speaker 7: I made a deal with God. Went from my hospital
- 39:08Speaker 7: bed and I, you know, God, if you'll just let
- 39:10Speaker 7: me live, I promise you I'll help somebody.
- 39:13Speaker 6: I'll help one.
- 39:14Speaker 7: Person before I leave this earth not have to walk
- 39:16Speaker 7: through that same path that I walked. And then, as
- 39:20Speaker 7: I say, the arrogant me came on board and said, no, no, no,
- 39:23Speaker 7: you need to help somebody every day. And that's why
- 39:26Speaker 7: I'm here with you guys. You know, we're going to
- 39:27Speaker 7: talk about domestic bolence a little bit and and hopefully
- 39:31Speaker 7: somebody hears or maybe maybe they just hear about the
- 39:35Speaker 7: boxing story and that'll give them strength at hope if
- 39:38Speaker 7: she can do boxing, because there was no path before.
- 39:40Speaker 6: There was no one for me to follow, no path.
- 39:42Speaker 7: Before, right, and I just I believe that I could
- 39:47Speaker 7: get it done, and so hopefully people can that are
- 39:51Speaker 7: in a tough situation with domestic ballence. You can say, wow,
- 39:54Speaker 7: if she did it, and I'm special about her, she says,
- 39:57Speaker 7: a coal miner's daughter from southern West Virginia.
- 40:00Speaker 6: I can do it. And so that was my deal
- 40:02Speaker 6: with God.
- 40:04Speaker 4: Yeah, and you you should be in you should you
- 40:09Speaker 4: should come into the locker room before a football game
- 40:14Speaker 4: and and and tell that story. And and I mean
- 40:18Speaker 4: that to me, that's something because you're giving away something
- 40:22Speaker 4: that is personal, private, but you make it seem so
- 40:26Speaker 4: inspirational as if it didn't touch you. But here, look,
- 40:33Speaker 4: everybody else, this is how you can get better. And
- 40:37Speaker 4: I don't know if I've I don't know if I've
- 40:39Speaker 4: ever heard you know, I'm gonna give you this, this problem.
- 40:42Speaker 4: I don't know if I've ever heard anybody who's been
- 40:45Speaker 4: an athlete in any sport at any time to find
- 40:49Speaker 4: that a negative part of your life and make it
- 40:54Speaker 4: into something positive for everybody else.
- 40:57Speaker 2: I don't know if I've ever if somebody's.
- 41:00Speaker 4: Ever hit me with that, and it and I mean
- 41:04Speaker 4: it hits me here in the gut, and I'm like,
- 41:06Speaker 4: you know, it's like that's special.
- 41:08Speaker 6: Thank you.
- 41:09Speaker 7: But God left me here for a reason. I mean,
- 41:11Speaker 7: I should not be here. This man stabbed me, punctured
- 41:14Speaker 7: my lung, shot me, missed my heart by two inches.
- 41:18Speaker 6: I should not be here. But God has a.
- 41:20Speaker 7: Bigger plan for me, and that's being here with you guys.
- 41:24Speaker 7: You know we're going to talk about domestic violence. We're
- 41:25Speaker 7: going to talk about life. We're going to talk about
- 41:27Speaker 7: doing it, doing it, and whatever doing it is. It
- 41:32Speaker 7: can be numerous things. It could be whatever's happening in
- 41:35Speaker 7: your life. You know, it doesn't matter. We can come,
- 41:38Speaker 7: we can we could cross over any bridge we need to.
- 41:40Speaker 9: I just needed to follow aud and my life.
- 41:44Speaker 8: Catch you get this laundry done, Lisa.
- 41:49Speaker 6: You know what I'm like, so frustrated, like and for
- 41:53Speaker 6: you kidding me? Why do you dust?
- 41:54Speaker 7: Because it just comes right back by the time you
- 41:57Speaker 7: get to the end of the room, there's dust where
- 41:59Speaker 7: you just let.
- 42:02Speaker 5: So and again to that point, you walk so many paths,
- 42:06Speaker 5: and you've done so without sort of a path finder,
- 42:10Speaker 5: right you.
- 42:11Speaker 2: You sort of set these paths.
- 42:13Speaker 5: And like I said, coming out of southern West Virginia
- 42:17Speaker 5: and rising and not only riding to the top, but
- 42:20Speaker 5: going through the adversity and still coming out on the
- 42:23Speaker 5: other side. Because again I don't I follow boxing pretty closely.
- 42:26Speaker 5: I don't know any too many female promoters at this
- 42:29Speaker 5: point either, So that's another path So and I know
- 42:33Speaker 5: Coach Lee talks about it all the time. Do you
- 42:35Speaker 5: feel like, just like West Virginia, Like, do you feel
- 42:40Speaker 5: like sometimes it's like, man, they don't know enough of
- 42:43Speaker 5: my story. It's like, do you feel like it's hard
- 42:45Speaker 5: to get it out here? Sometimes like where they should
- 42:48Speaker 5: shouldn't know this because I like I said, I knew,
- 42:52Speaker 5: but I didn't know.
- 42:55Speaker 2: Before you go. I know he's going jump.
- 42:57Speaker 4: Yes, let me let me just help before you say it,
- 43:01Speaker 4: so that if anybody who's listening to the show.
- 43:04Speaker 2: I said it first. Okay.
- 43:06Speaker 4: I think West Virginia has done a super poor job
- 43:11Speaker 4: on promoting its athletes.
- 43:14Speaker 2: It's it's people who have.
- 43:18Speaker 4: Stood up done things and we just don't want to
- 43:22Speaker 4: say it's like we forget them, like we let them
- 43:25Speaker 4: go without any story.
- 43:28Speaker 2: How do you have a movie?
- 43:30Speaker 4: Okay? How do you have a movie and there are
- 43:33Speaker 4: kids who still don't know her name? How is that possible?
- 43:38Speaker 4: Whose fault is that? I mean, that's all media. There's
- 43:43Speaker 4: no reason. I'm telling you. I am so happy that
- 43:47Speaker 4: you're here. I'm like, this is like Christmas for me, Okay, And.
- 43:54Speaker 2: It bothers me.
- 43:55Speaker 4: I hate that you brought it up, but I'm glad
- 43:57Speaker 4: that you did it because because it it really bothers
- 44:01Speaker 4: me to think that there's a possibility that without you
- 44:07Speaker 4: being on the show. Somebody doesn't know you, somebody missed you,
- 44:11Speaker 4: somebody didn't see your show.
- 44:13Speaker 2: That makes no sense to me, not in West Virginia.
- 44:16Speaker 4: Not how huge you are to me in my mind
- 44:19Speaker 4: in West Virginia, what you've done for West Virginia. You
- 44:23Speaker 4: you carried that name every fight.
- 44:30Speaker 7: I came out to loret Land. I actually went to
- 44:32Speaker 7: see Loretta Land and asked her. I got her blessing
- 44:35Speaker 7: to be the coal miner's daughter. So Jim Martin would
- 44:41Speaker 7: always tell me West Virginia doesn't support you, and I
- 44:43Speaker 7: would fight him because I didn't want to think.
- 44:47Speaker 6: That West Virginia didn't support me.
- 44:49Speaker 7: But I and it's a little bit old school, right,
- 44:52Speaker 7: It's still old It was in the nineties especially, and
- 44:55Speaker 7: so there was less people open up to women's boxing
- 45:00Speaker 7: because I was just a woman fighter. If I had
- 45:02Speaker 7: been a man fighter coming from West Virginia, I think
- 45:06Speaker 7: it would have got a lot more support.
- 45:09Speaker 4: Well, I you know, as as a football player, it
- 45:12Speaker 4: didn't work for me, you know what I'm saying, Like
- 45:15Speaker 4: I don't I truly don't feel like there was that
- 45:19Speaker 4: there was that I got any of enough attention to
- 45:23Speaker 4: the career that I had sounds arrogant, but with the
- 45:26Speaker 4: career that I had, I don't feel like the media
- 45:29Speaker 4: covered me to a point that I could be an
- 45:32Speaker 4: inspiration to another kid, not for me, but just so
- 45:35Speaker 4: that another kid could say, oh, well, Carl Lee, he
- 45:39Speaker 4: came from Old spring Hill down on Greenway.
- 45:42Speaker 2: He if he could make it, I could make it.
- 45:44Speaker 4: And to me, my whole, my whole frustration with that
- 45:48Speaker 4: is just because we're not passing on We're not we're
- 45:51Speaker 4: not being able to pass on our our skill set,
- 45:57Speaker 4: our success two kids who may want to dream.
- 46:02Speaker 5: The same dreams that we dream. And I think it's
- 46:06Speaker 5: to that point, but I think there's a special thing
- 46:09Speaker 5: about coming from West Virginia and you being able to
- 46:13Speaker 5: make it to that sort of limelight where because a
- 46:16Speaker 5: lot of times here the mentality can be smaller and
- 46:20Speaker 5: you don't really think that big, you don't really dream
- 46:23Speaker 5: that big, and then when you have somebody who NFL
- 46:26Speaker 5: pro bo boxing champion, I think it really adds value
- 46:31Speaker 5: to those kids to say, hey, yeah, I'm from this
- 46:33Speaker 5: small town, I'm from this small neighborhood, but I can
- 46:36Speaker 5: do a big world things. And I think part of
- 46:39Speaker 5: our mission on this show is to really highlight that.
- 46:42Speaker 5: Like we had Kurt Warner on the other day, and
- 46:44Speaker 5: you know what I'm saying, So we want to really
- 46:46Speaker 5: give a voice to those West Virginians who really not
- 46:49Speaker 5: only impacted maybe their communities, but impacted their sport, impacted.
- 46:54Speaker 2: The world through their sport.
- 46:56Speaker 4: Yeah, and you know, and talking about Kurt, you know,
- 47:02Speaker 4: he's the best, He's the best back in the nation.
- 47:04Speaker 4: He comes out of high school as the best back
- 47:06Speaker 4: of the nation out of Pineville, and you've let him
- 47:12Speaker 4: just fall by the wayside. You don't want to know
- 47:15Speaker 4: anything about his career. Nobody wants to call him and say, hey,
- 47:18Speaker 4: you know, I like to do an interview on you
- 47:20Speaker 4: and talk about you know, your your career. Well we did, yeah,
- 47:23Speaker 4: we did.
- 47:25Speaker 6: At high school. So he ran lots of touch.
- 47:33Speaker 4: And here's I played against I played with him in
- 47:35Speaker 4: the North South game, and me and a buddy of mine,
- 47:39Speaker 4: we couldn't wait and I was I told him this story.
- 47:41Speaker 4: We couldn't wait to he because he he was getting
- 47:43Speaker 4: the O. J. Simpson Award, which should have been enough
- 47:45Speaker 4: for us, but we were like, we I want to
- 47:47Speaker 4: see how good he is, right, So we we waited
- 47:49Speaker 4: on him we helped him with his bags and we're like, okay,
- 47:53Speaker 4: we had to wait and see how it gets on
- 47:55Speaker 4: the field. And as soon as he gets on the field,
- 47:59Speaker 4: we were like, oh, shoot, yeah.
- 48:03Speaker 2: He's he's definitely else.
- 48:05Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 48:06Speaker 4: And and and to me, I feel like you're in
- 48:10Speaker 4: that You're in that situation where you've done something so amazing,
- 48:17Speaker 4: so great, so unbelievable, and and West Virginia is not
- 48:25Speaker 4: celebrating that.
- 48:26Speaker 2: Well, we're celebrating here. Yeah, we are definitely.
- 48:28Speaker 5: So just before you go, like, tell us just about
- 48:32Speaker 5: your fighters, about your promotion, like what do you have
- 48:35Speaker 5: coming up?
- 48:36Speaker 2: And and a new book? You got a new book too.
- 48:38Speaker 7: So I have a book that was written by Ron Borges,
- 48:40Speaker 7: who you guys might know from the from He wrote
- 48:43Speaker 7: Boston Globe all the time, covered football, baseball, everything.
- 48:49Speaker 6: He's a Hall of Famer actually, Ron Borges.
- 48:51Speaker 7: So we have the book out, We have the Netflix documentary,
- 48:54Speaker 7: have a movie coming out with Sidney Sweeney playing me Swim, which.
- 48:58Speaker 6: Is gonna be cool. And I am a promoter.
- 49:03Speaker 7: So July eighteenth, I will be promoting a show from
- 49:05Speaker 7: Pachanga which is Tamecula California Casino Hotel, Pretty exciting. It's
- 49:10Speaker 7: gonna be on millions dot co if anybody wants to
- 49:13Speaker 7: watch that pay per view. And then we have a
- 49:15Speaker 7: fight coming up at the minor league baseball field.
- 49:19Speaker 6: The Chihuahuas is.
