- 2:15Well, now it's time for today's episode of the Adventures of Philip Marlow.
- 2:19The original air date September the third, nineteen forty nine, and the
- 2:23title is The Bombs Rush, Get This and Get It Straight. Crime is
- 2:29a Sucker's road knows who travel had wind up in the gut of the Prison
- 2:31of the Grave. The trail started Montana with a bum with two names rushing
- 2:36away from his lady love and led fast into La asked a Southerner from Canada,
- 2:40a worried wool dealer, and a chorus girl with a forty five.
- 2:44When it finally stopped at Murder in the Park, the tramp was still in
- 2:46a hurry from the pen of Raymond Chandler, outstanding author of cry in fiction,
- 2:53comes his most famous character in the Adventures of Philip Barlow. Now with
- 3:07Gerald Moore startist Philla Marlowe, we bring you tonight's exciting story, The Bum's
- 3:13Rush. You know, there comes a time in everyone's life when a relative
- 3:29wants a favor. But this was a particularly nice relative. It's like the
- 3:35great old gal. She'd written my name and address in the center, and
- 3:38her name Jesse Gavins Eagles Rock Montana in the app left corner of the envelope.
- 3:43The stamps total Away Mail Special, and the letter inside started off like
- 3:46one of those I was wrong. You've got to find him for me.
- 3:49You've got to tight But it didn't wind up that way. Clip through the
- 3:53letter was one hundred dollars check and under that a not too good snapshot of
- 3:57a bald man holding a rake who wouldn't have been helped any by better photography.
- 4:01Ten minutes later, at exactly eight pm, my long distance call was
- 4:04put through. In the voice that belonged to end, Jesse was snapping at
- 4:08me Migo's rock Montana like the end of a whip bism old. How many
- 4:12Disney given as you think there an Eagles rocks. I want you to find
- 4:16Jonathan Minor and saff he's all right, yeah you said that in your letters
- 4:21and Jesse young man. But I'm fifty one and he's fifty five, and
- 4:28there's nothing wrong with the stem of the harmony's falling up. Yeah, I
- 4:31hope my harmony is that good when I'm fifty five. Why are you worried?
- 4:34Honey? Toby left your last week on some kind of a big deal.
- 4:39What's the paper? That's all he tells me. I haven't heard of
- 4:42what from him? I see? Well, tell me what sort of a
- 4:45deal would it be? I mean what business? He's not in any business?
- 4:48Oh? What was his work before he retired? Well, he's not
- 4:51exactly retired either, He's not. Look, Aunt, Jesse, I'm getting
- 4:56at this. What does he do? Well? What did he used to
- 4:58do for a living? Clean enough? Well, I might as well tell
- 5:01you. Most folks around here, Philip think Jonathan Lighter's just to mom.
- 5:04Maybe he is. He came to Tom Philip on a on a freight train
- 5:10a month ago, and he's been raking leaves for handouts ever since. That's
- 5:14how I met him. But he's a fine, honest, proud man,
- 5:16and I'm find to marry him. Congratulations. Yes, look, you didn't
- 5:21happen to give that fine on his proud man a lot of money to finance's
- 5:25big deal is, did you? Well, then don't because I'll be frank.
- 5:29Sounds to me like a broken down con man warming up a new routine.
- 5:31And I gladly pay to find that out, Philip. But I think
- 5:35you're wrong. Jonathan told me that he had to prove himself by making some
- 5:40money of his own before he'd marry me if I didn't have enough to take
- 5:44her two people already. Okay, Jesse, he's a little offcentive it out
- 5:47by it. Can't you find him? Don't tell him that I hired just
- 5:51I say, he's very proud and then it hurt him and now, oh,
- 5:55I can get you to go on. Aside from that snapshot, I
- 5:59send an address seven six four Hope Street in Los Angeles, seven six four
- 6:06Hopes. Well, how'd you get that? From checking through every single thing
- 6:10of pay as I could lay my hands on. It was on the back
- 6:13of an envelope. May not mean nothing, It's all right, Jesse,
- 6:16Please not don't shook with me to the Jonathan was so serious and in such
- 6:21a hurry, and there was a funny, brave clint in his eye when
- 6:26he left to your bed, brave glid Okay, Jesse, no jokes,
- 6:30goodbye Dland. That felt little sorry, my aunt Jesse Gevins, because the
- 6:42concept of a night of the road rushing off on a secret quest to prove
- 6:45himself worthy of marriage and left like a celluloid's shovel. And I got no
- 6:48help when I pulled to a stop in front of seven sixty four Hope Street.
- 6:53It was a cramped combination warehouse and office of corrugated iron and glass brick,
- 6:57respectively, with a shy red and black signed reading hirsh Woolen's over a
- 7:00door that looked like that. It looked like it handled about as much business
- 7:04voice and later or a fair shop for spinning wheels. It was half open,
- 7:08however, so I went in just in time to catch the last round
- 7:12of what must have been a healthy spat going on behind a frosted glass door
- 7:15marks private. Well, I'll tell you something, mister Elden. Hurt Peter
- 7:18writes more on wool and left on nylon and you'll be better off, all
- 7:23right. I haven't take marka. This is no kind of ribble. We've
- 7:26got more important things to do on left. Of course, you want to
- 7:30keep that chorus job at the proom forever? Well, okay, do that's
- 7:36what's your stept by eld stand aside, stupid, This is our hallway,
- 7:42not an art yellows a petty girl, I've ever seen one. Hell,
- 7:46what do you want, oh, mister hirsh Yes, yeah, well I'm
- 7:49ned Johnson. I'm looking for a job the kind oh salesman wolves my life.
- 7:55See how long have you been waiting out here? I just kept in
- 8:00come into thanks so down? What is your specialty? Felt? Well,
- 8:05I I've handled them all. We confine ourselves largely to a very high grade
- 8:11Marino Woolen, mister Johnson, need Johnson, I've worked with Marino. Oh
- 8:16what about the others? Lester perhaps Lincoln? Oh, sure, Lester Lincoln
- 8:22is certainly. I find it all a fascinating business, so do I very
- 8:26romantic background. Yeah, by the way, what do you think of lanatal
- 8:30As against Marino Lantel? Well? Not good, not no. You see,
- 8:33I've watched the Lanotels and the Raines right through shearing and on up to
- 8:37weaving. It just doesn't compare. What's the matter? What are you really
- 8:41after I slipped? Then you tell on your faith. Lanetel is a synthetic
- 8:46wool made from milk. Now, who are you? Okay? Okay,
- 8:48I'm from the Sequoia Credit Association. We're investigating you. Just a periodic routine
- 8:54thing. It's strictly competent. You're like, get out of here and stay
- 8:56out if I ever catch all right, take it easy. I was clumsy,
- 8:58That's all. I got to start a riot about him. You fired
- 9:01on my appoint Tampa. You got there. I watch it Hershe will get
- 9:05you in trouble. So long, I hadn't exactly been wool gathering with hirshe
- 9:15and company, but I hadn't exactly made strides on the connection between a bum
- 9:18and a hurry in seven sixty four Hope Street. Are they? However,
- 9:22I couldn't help wondering what hirsh It meant when I'd overheard him speak to the
- 9:24girl in the office about more important things to do. So when he slammed
- 9:30the door on my shoulder blades, I went around to the alley for a
- 9:31peak in his warehouse, but I skipped that when a man stepped into view
- 9:35wearing the identical face I had in my pocket on a snapshot. It was
- 9:39Jonathan Mider. He swapped the rake for a silver tip cane and patches.
- 9:43The fourteen carried classmen spats to a hamburg, which might well have covered a
- 9:46bald head. But it was the sane man, no doubt about it.
- 9:50So I decided to play this one strictly. Three cushions of the reverse English.
- 9:54Hey, hey, hey, you boy? You addressing me? So?
- 9:58Yeah, don't I know you? Oh? Sure I do? Pointe,
- 10:01you're mistaken, my man. I haven't been East since thirty years.
- 10:05Oh come on, friend, I know you anyway. You're good old Jonathan
- 10:07Mider. So I am Ross J. Crowley of Canada, and I have
- 10:13never had the dubious pleasure of your acquaintanceship until this very moment, Ross J.
- 10:18Crowley of Canada. And okay, Midas, that's the way you want
- 10:22it. What are you doing around the world business setting it up for a
- 10:24fleecing or just pulling it over somebody's eyes? My good man, you've obviously
- 10:28confused me with someone else. Now pack off, Can I tell I wait?
- 10:33A minute. Pop, Wait a minute, Let's get this straight.
- 10:35First, your name's not Crowley. Why are you using it? My god,
- 10:37please here, you're trying my patience. Stand aside. Come on,
- 10:41let's have it. Oh very well, have you insist? Hey, I
- 10:45come back here, you'll go get it. Don't you look out? Why
- 10:48you awkward? Roughly? Why don't you look where you're going? I was,
- 10:50but I couldn't get around all three of you three What do you mean
- 10:54you and your too big fat if you can't keep those gunboats out of people's
- 10:56way by yourself, hire a pilot and you? Oh by now, my
- 11:01boys so far ahead. I couldn't catch them if he stopped for lunch.
- 11:03Thanks to you, goodbye? What as far as the corner anyway? But
- 11:09I'd been right the first time. Jonathan Mayday alias Ross J. Crowley of
- 11:11Canada was long gone, and I had no idea where left me With one
- 11:16slim, lovely leave. A lady named Marsha Bideaves dropped correctly. She would
- 11:20shortly be making with the legs and the chorus of the plume sta or Restaurant.
- 11:24It was seven point thirty when I added the platum plated saurust trap on
- 11:26Hollywood Boulevard that featured small portions of bad food on the glass and large helpings
- 11:31of good skin on the lights. Torusted me. Ten bucks in a fast
- 11:35had lived backstage, but it would have been worse out front. So when
- 11:39the chorus high kicked its way out in the wings, I nailed Marsha.
- 11:41She went by, She narrowed a half a pound of mass carre at me
- 11:45and let a footlight smile drop, which left very little elk. Yeah,
- 11:48my name's Marsha. What do you want? Make it campy? I gotta
- 11:50change, James, watch yourhead. Doom just won't take a minute. Baby.
- 11:54All I want to know is where Jonathan Mighty can be found. How
- 11:56should I know? I never heard of him. You're stelling on your own
- 11:58time, Baby, I got all night not see you, Jack Blow,
- 12:01I'm back here. This is important. Now, listen you I don't know
- 12:03anybody called Jonathan what's his name? And put one more fingerprint on my arm
- 12:09and you'll get bounced out of here on your head. You know, there's
- 12:11just a chance you could be on the level. Look, guy wants about
- 12:15fifty five and spats with a Hamburg over what is no doubt a ball dome,
- 12:18carries a black cam with a silver tipping. For some reason, answers
- 12:22the name of Crowley. Ow, Yeah, that's it, Ross J getting
- 12:26warmer head kid, and don't bother telling me I never heard of it.
- 12:28So I've heard of him. So what. He's a good pal of mine.
- 12:31Met him a couple of nights ago. He's quite a sport. I
- 12:33bet he is. Why can I find him? What do you want him
- 12:35for? I want to talk to him. That's always He lived up a
- 12:37tree, like I said, buster blow, like I said, baby,
- 12:41this is important, so important. I'll have a lopsided line. And the
- 12:43next time, if you don't talk, because you won't be there, you'll
- 12:46be on your way to the pokey. Now whe does he live? I
- 12:48don't know. It's from Canada. You can come closer than that, sweetheart,
- 12:50Give all right? He tells me he takes a walk in the park
- 12:54every night. He raves about the gladiolas like they grow in cold a canyon.
- 13:00Maybe maybe thanks your good kid. Keep your power dry, baby,
- 13:05I'll see you. That park looked deserted. One a half hour later,
- 13:16I drove by it to the bar and turned down a side street and stopped,
- 13:20But as I started in on foot, I saw him fat Homburg cane
- 13:24and alien handling slowly away from me along the back path. I started affing
- 13:28him quietly, and when he got near a corner, I was close enough
- 13:31to hale him and then grabbed. I didn't get the chance stand still and
- 13:35keep their mouth shut. I turned slowly because the gentleman with a big feet,
- 13:39and he wasn't much ugly, It's just a little flabby and the automatic
- 13:41wrapped up in his fists. You seem to be falling over my feat every
- 13:46time I turn around. I noticed that, but I think it the first
- 13:48time with coincidence. What do you think of now? And that gay dog
- 13:52mister Crawley who just turned that corner of the airs wagging two tails to hold
- 13:58the gavel shaman? And don't you forget it? So he gave you the
- 14:01name Crowley? Did he? Why you think he's got another one? Stop
- 14:05that? We both know he's lying. But I don't know is why he
- 14:07took that name? Of why you're interested in the hobby? I collect old
- 14:11geezus with more than one name. I'm going to handle a lot. You
- 14:15won't tell me. I don't know you're angle. Either we might work out
- 14:20a trade. No, I'm not wasting any more time either. You're not
- 14:22going to get away from me again, and that means you'd better stay right
- 14:26here. Oh he plowed me up on the ground with a stomach full of
- 14:35pains. I saw him run down the path. When I got back to
- 14:39my seat, he was taking the corner and just started after him. When
- 14:41it came I froze and listened. There was nothing more to hear. I
- 14:48walked softly as far as the corner. He was faced down in the toes
- 14:52of his oversized shoes, digging into the grass, and the gunny hadn't time
- 14:54to use. Filled a few inches away from his clenched dead hand, across
- 15:00the park and rushing for Colwood a canyon road as fast as the seat would
- 15:03go. As a bum with two names in a homburg hat in just a
- 15:18moment. The second act of Philip Marlowe, but first thirty minutes pack full

- 15:58over most of the same CBS station to name, tune in the fall all
- 16:04the shows that you love that of allan carefully, here's the address. Now
- 16:15with our star Gerald Moore, we returned to the second act of Philip Marlowe
- 16:18and Tonight's story, The bombs Rush, and I took after the fleeing figure
- 16:33known to my aunt Jesse as Jonathan Mider or Ross. J. Crawley was
- 16:37still barely visible ahead, with arms and legs flailing the night air like so
- 16:41many test streamers in a wind tunnel. I didn't know any more about his
- 16:45double identity than I had before, but I did know that what might have
- 16:49started is only a competent game of sorts. And now Mushroom did a murder
- 16:53with the aforesaid gentleman very much involved, and a moment later, when I
- 16:57saw him, breathless and afraid, duck into its tagging deserted wooden check,
- 17:00I showed a single red light and was labeled to pop in the pox fire
- 17:03equipment Private. I figured the right time and place had come to talk it
- 17:07all over. When I finally carefully stepped inside and announced both myself, I'm
- 17:12thirty eight and hand in definite sentorian tones, he agreed wholeheartedly. All right,
- 17:18all right, hand up. I have no reason to ride other than
- 17:26murder. No murder, that's noise I heard. That's what he's got.
- 17:30Somebody was shot. Now, somebody was run over by a bullet rolling down
- 17:33hill at a terrific rate of speed. Now shut up and turn around,
- 17:36pop hands still high time we got cautious? Are you searching for a gun
- 17:41on these the young man us be out of your mind? First you insist
- 17:45that I'm a mister m m somebody I never heard of her, and you're
- 17:48convinced that I'm a murderer. I don't understand you. There no gun?
- 17:55Na is that no intrigued? Where'd you throw it? I did? I
- 17:59never had? Yeah? The name Crowley Ross J. Why do you use
- 18:03it because it's mine, and that young man is a very common customer.
- 18:08Do you mind if I leave? I do now, look old time.
- 18:11I'm only going to be nice about this for a little while because, first
- 18:15of all, as a fresh cops outside and where I can you could be
- 18:18responsible for it and checking. The second of all is my angle, where
- 18:22I fit, who I work for facts, and I don't want to reveal
- 18:23him unless I have to off from the top. You and the dead guy,
- 18:29the connection, what is it? I haven't the slightest idea of what
- 18:32you're talking. Yeah, haven't. Okay, pop, we played it straight
- 18:34all the way. Now listen. My name's Philip Marlow. I'm private detective
- 18:37and I know what it's time to blow with it. Don't move you never
- 18:41will again. Oh fine, maid Marsa all loaded down with a nastyle forty
- 18:45five automatic that makes her look and feel very unladylike. Drop it, mama.
- 18:52Come on, tell miss Crowley about waiting for Mala to apologize on cool
- 18:59where the hotel is important to her. I will waste the second. You
- 19:04won't need the key. Somebody's waiting for you. Good Bye, mister Crowley,
- 19:07goodbye. I hope I never meet you again, mister Madan. It's
- 19:14cute as me, darling. The moment's unimportant right now, you're my only
- 19:18concern. Malow. No, it's nice. It's cozy, just a three
- 19:22of us, you and that giant US pistol caliber. Well, say,
- 19:26baby, that's not your gun. No you feel excited? Oh no,
- 19:30no, sweet happy say that? Why? Some one know you will you
- 19:34can't? You see baby as a free safety devices an army gud and that
- 19:38do hit you there on the side is one. It won't work unless it's
- 19:41in the four thought. I will not a great question, teacher, You
- 19:48and Grandpa Elias Jonathan might also Elias Ross J. Crowley. What's the game
- 19:51you do? A player where the first fit is come on, it's getting
- 19:53late, it's not people wants an answer. Thanks to get to the head
- 19:56of the class talk what is it? I don't remember and I won't put
- 19:59on by I'm getting masculine or polish in Apple's pupils. When I forget I
- 20:03to get for a long long time. Is that clear? It is?
- 20:06Since I can't wait, since I want to go out and play, we'll
- 20:07pitch you with Hey, honey, you know you don't mind if I go
- 20:14through your bag, do you I didn't think you would. Ah, here's
- 20:19the key that says, in what room I'll find a team of Crowley and
- 20:22fine as oh mine mine such a temper. After I picked up my thirty
- 20:33eight, which the lady who no longer sounded like one, it made me
- 20:36drop, and I checked the hotel key that read Villa twelve wilt your gardens,
- 20:38Beverly Hills. I ran outside and back toward my car and what I
- 20:42figured should be a big hurry. When I was halfway there, I had
- 20:45a premonition of speed. Was not to be a premonition. That was a
- 20:48head dressed in blue, carrying a club, wearing a badge and leaning on
- 20:52my right front sender. And it wasn't until I was next to him that
- 20:56I quit worrying about how long involved delays. The officer on hand, one,
- 21:00Kurt Lemley, was an old and I hoped still good friends. Oh
- 21:04for you, since the calling about that body, if the son kid heard
- 21:07the shot, so you would once tag this all alone in very suspicious looking
- 21:11car, yeah, as it was yours and disappointed, I'd hope the name
- 21:15of the owner's tag was going to be Rowling Nukeomb. Wait a minute,
- 21:18women, you know his name, so jud Now we were on different sides
- 21:22when he got shot. Oh he's from Canada. What Yeah, Vancouver.
- 21:26He had a business up there with a guy named ross Jed Crowley. Crowley.
- 21:30Hey, Kurt, how'd you find all this out? I found a
- 21:32clipping in his wallet, got a picture on it. Wait for a light.
- 21:37Yeah, hurry up. When I see see two guys in front of
- 21:40a building, Rol Nukeom and Rossted Crowley officiated there. But sure, it's
- 21:44what I said at the guy's a liar. I've already met a guy who
- 21:47assisted. That's his name and his ball like the Crowley in the picture.
- 21:49Yeah, but there's a similarity in even though the picture is anything but clear.
- 21:52You're talking about Jonathan Mier and old Geezer. I was hired to find
- 21:56Bumbo was pulling something fancied that. Incidentally, I been real tight with that
- 22:00murder over there. You know what he is? Said? Sure, I
- 22:03know that's where I was heading when I ran it. Oh ran into what
- 22:07is it the picture? What, Kurt? Move your time up a little
- 22:11whit the way you just had it my bum Yeah, yeah, move it.
- 22:14That's it like that, Oh, brother, brother, if I got
- 22:17a hunch about what another murder and eat when the schedule to come off any
- 22:18minute at the Wilshire Gardens Hotel, I'll see you later, goodbye. At
- 22:29best it would ten screeching stop and go minutes from Coldwater Canyon Park across Beverly
- 22:33Hills to the Wilshire Gardens Hotel on the boulevard of the same name, and
- 22:37all the way I kept hoping over time that one of two things was so.
- 22:41Either my hunch was wrong and nobody else was going to get hurt for
- 22:44a while, or it was right no soon on time. But when I
- 22:48was there, parked and running towards the villa Number ten, which was a
- 22:51silent stucker square, choking to death under rivy and showing only a single light
- 22:55in the living room, I was almost sure that it was going to place
- 22:57till another way write, and too late to do any good. When I
- 23:02tried the door and pounded open and inside saw at once the letter propped up
- 23:06against the lamp on an end table that I'd been afraid i'd find. There
- 23:08was no longer any doubts, and even as I crossed the room, I
- 23:12knew that I was going to read a suicide note addressed to the police telling
- 23:15them that the undersigned Ross J. Crawley had taken his own life. Well,
- 23:19it's better the partner had been stealing from Raleigh Newcombe or it's currently been
- 23:23pursuing him. But I didn't know until I reached for the letter to make
- 23:26sure that I'd figured right With the last line just before the signature, it
- 23:32read, also, rather than face the humility of being dragged with the courts
- 23:36for killing Newcomb, they had taken the life of a man who would have
- 23:38caught me a private detective named Philip Marlow, especially when it's the picture A
- 23:45right move, Ah, mister hirsch uh or do I call you Crawley?
- 23:52Now? Doesn't matter Marlow suit yourself. What does matter is that showing up
- 23:56white the boy genius you think there were meaning? What? Meaning much?
- 24:00You talked to her the plumes, and she talked to me. Between the
- 24:03two of us, we maneuvered you around just like we wanted to, so
- 24:07we could include you in our plans. In other words, my lot friend
- 24:11Marcia sent Mida here from the park. We knew you'd follow Yeah, all
- 24:18year round. I'll bet okay, Crowley. So the one with two heads
- 24:22isn't Jonathan Mighter, it's you. You is Ellen Hirsch here in La Ross
- 24:26j Crowley and Newcomb's partner up in Canada, a crooked partner Crowley, who,
- 24:30when he knew he was going to be caught, decided to kill him
- 24:33something with another guy's body, Jonathan Midas. So it wouldn't hurt exactly.
- 24:37Also, my litw nobody will bother to look past what will pass us Crowley's
- 24:41buddy for the murderer of Newcomb, who I didn't expect from the seat.
- 24:45I think you'll admit it's all accounted for. And that letter there in Crowley's
- 24:49my handwriting. Bravo, you skip nothing. Now what about me? Yes,
- 24:52you you must go before Jonathan Meder. You know, otherwise the caroler
- 24:57might find something wrong with the sequence of death. So at you first.
- 25:03No, doubt is unconscious in the bedroom right now. Doubt is standing right
- 25:08here listening, you crazy fools you are, mister Crowley. I won't that
- 25:12way I die least I have a cattle mighty all right, yeah, I
- 25:22think so? Just wing. Oh yeah, you got him, didn't change
- 25:27tomorrow? Yeah no, no, Jonathan, you got him and Rush did
- 25:33it your big bombs mallow, Yeah, bomb? It was too long hours
- 25:52the first aid for Jonathan's arrest on the charge of murder for both Crowley and
- 25:56the accomplice before and after the fact, mopping and questions and answers and triplicate
- 26:02to the police. Before Mida and I were finally alone and back in my
- 26:07office waiting for a call we put through too, of course, Eagles Rock,
- 26:11Montana. But even then the gentleman vagabond couldn't quite get over things.
- 26:15Then. In other words, mister Molow, this Crowley who introduced himself to
- 26:21me is kersh had his fiendish plan already formulated, and one of his tips
- 26:26down from Canada saw me when his train stopped at Eagles Rock. I was
- 26:30shreking leaves around the depot and he saw me, and he hired me on
- 26:33the spot because he needed someone to fit the part of his court. That's
- 26:38it, And you'll admit you are well qualified for the job alone in the
- 26:41world except for Jesse, which you didn't happen to mention, and the fact
- 26:45that you were bald. Two truths. Don't be sensitive, you see,
- 26:51Crowley or Hirsch was also bald. Why all that hair of his. We
- 26:55that's right to pay every bit of it. And incidentally, you see the
- 26:57reason I caught out of things. Johnny policeman found a newspaper picture of Newcomb
- 27:02and Crawley and Newcomb's wallet, which told you that I couldn't be crowing.
- 27:06That's right. It also told me more when the policeman accidentally put his thumb
- 27:08over the ballpart of Crawley's head gave me a different picture. Then I only
- 27:14paid attention to what I could see, features blurred though they were, which
- 27:17then you were her shoe. Uh huh yeah. Hello Philip Marlow, please
- 27:25Marlow speaking on your calls, and miss Jesse Gavins and Eagles Rock Montana one
- 27:30moment please yeah, heah, take it, Jonathan, Yeah, yeah,
- 27:32go ahead to speak, Oh Jesse, Jesse, that is Johnny. Yeah,
- 27:41I'm in Los Angeles with mister Marlow. Turtles. You don't have to
- 27:48shout so loud, you know, you know what she can hear. You
- 27:51just talk. You get what happened? Now? A man hired me to
- 27:57work for him, pose to pose impersonated mister Ross J. Crowley because he
- 28:06said he had to be free to investigate some crooked people who would try and
- 28:10contact me. And since he offered good money right on the spot there,
- 28:15Jessica, I took the job. I thought you'd be proud of me making
- 28:18extra money. Wait a minute, mister marlw I a better cut the short
- 28:22at night. It's a long distance. It's cause money. Don't worry about
- 28:26it, Johnny, there's no hurry to take your time. Now, what
- 28:30this man really wanted you're there? What was to use me as a court
- 28:38that's like a buddy. Oh here, I feel fine. He was gonna
- 28:45put his rings on me, another identification to knock me up content. By
- 29:00the time I got Jonathan Mida down a Union station and the border northbound train
- 29:04with specific instruction is to stay away from strangers, and got back to my
- 29:10own apartment on Franklin. It was better than three o'clock in the morning.
- 29:14Oh and I was tired, and I emptied out my pocket. Just got
- 29:18to do undress. I forgot about that when my eyes fell on the picture
- 29:22that Jesse Gavins had sent me in her original letters, the picture of Jonathan.
- 29:27Well, now, Aunt Jesse was going to be happy, but I
- 29:32wondered for how long? Somehow the portrait of the man with a hole with
- 29:36a solid look of the agents didn't fit the spare frame of Jesse's Night of
- 29:41the Road. A lonesome train whistle would blow in the night, and Jonathan
- 29:47Mida would be gone. The Adventures of Philip Marlowe star Gerald Moore and are
- 30:07produced and directed by Norman McDonald. Script is by Meldon la Robert Mitchell and
- 30:14Gene Levitt. Featured in the cast were Georgia Ellis, Hans Conrad and Morrison,
- 30:18Herb Butterfield, Wilms Herbert, and Bill Bouchet. The special music is
- 30:22composed and conducted by Richard A. Rott. He currently with us again next
- 30:30week. When Philip Marlowe says, the lady Tauris was a schoolteacher a after
- 30:37glamour, and she got it, but only after she learned that in Hollywood
- 30:41the three hours could be reading done in a dark room, writing found in
- 30:47a dead man's pocket, and arithmetic that added up to murder times two.
- 30:56If you think you've got troubles, you should be married to Liz Cooper.
- 31:08She can scare up more trouble than a tropical hurricane, but it's always the
- 31:12kind of trouble you can laugh at because it's all part of My Favorite Husband
- 31:17starring Lucille Ball. My Favorite Husband is part of CBS's great laugh line up
- 31:22for Friday nights. You will want to miss a single minute of My Favorite
- 31:26Husband, and you'll want to be around too to hear the Goldbergs, Leave
- 31:30It to Joan and Breakfast with Burrows. They'll all be broadcast on Friday nights
- 31:33over most of these CBS stations starting next Friday. This is Roy Rowan speaking
- 31:41Now stay tuned for Gangbusters, which follows immediately over most of these same stations.
- 31:51This is CBS the Columbia Broadcasting Systems Welcome back, well your sunshine and
- 31:59optimism. Though he may have a point about human nature, and that's probably
- 32:05one of the more world weary ends, though in some ways it was almost
- 32:09wistful about the nature of knots of the road. Also really nice to hear
- 32:15Hans Conried in this. Conried really is probably best known for his comedic work
- 32:23on programs such as Life with Luigi, and of course he was the voice
- 32:30of Snodly Whiplash and so by comparison, this is a much more dramatic role,
- 32:37even though there's a bit of a comedic edge. I also liked the
- 32:39twist with Marlowe reading a confession to his own murder. That was a bit
- 32:45chilling. I wish they would have just left the tension hang for just maybe
- 32:49a second or two longer. At any rate, though, another great episode
- 32:52of Philip Marlowe, and that will do it for today. We will be
- 32:57back tomorrow with Nick Carter, and then join us back here again next Wednesday
- 33:01for the adventures of Philip Marlowe. In the meantime, send your comments to
