- 0:00Speaker 1: What should be a pretty palatable evening for baseball takes
- 0:03Speaker 1: place tonight at UFCU dish Fawkfield. Good afternoon, everybody, Welcome
- 0:07Speaker 1: to the program here on Sports Radio AM thirteen under
- 0:10Speaker 1: the Zone.
- 0:10Speaker 2: My name is Craig Way.
- 0:12Speaker 1: Thank you for joining us as we bring you the
- 0:14Speaker 1: program today from UFCU dish falk Field. Tonight, the Texas
- 0:18Speaker 1: Longhorns take on the Vcaros at the University of Texas
- 0:22Speaker 1: Riereo Graham Valley UTRGV, as we commonly refer to the Vicaros.
- 0:26Speaker 1: There's a couple of interesting wrinkles about this game that
- 0:29Speaker 1: we're going to get to as the program goes forward.
- 0:31Speaker 1: But there's plenty of other things on our plate that
- 0:34Speaker 1: will continue to discuss today, football, basketball, baseball, different things
- 0:41Speaker 1: to discuss, and of course discussing it with us as
- 0:44Speaker 1: always the producer of the program, Cameron D. Parker, the
- 0:48Speaker 1: dal Labverirth Certificate stands for Dallas, as in his favorite
- 0:53Speaker 1: pro football team that he does that he chooses not
- 0:56Speaker 1: to follow because he's frustrated with Jerry.
- 0:58Speaker 2: Jones and management and ownership of that nature.
- 1:00Speaker 1: But today Cam, does Dallas stand for the Dallas Wings
- 1:07Speaker 1: or does it stand for dumb ass, Nico, we get
- 1:12Speaker 1: a media availability and that did not allow cameras for
- 1:15Speaker 1: recording devices.
- 1:17Speaker 2: Mavericks general manager, Good afternoon.
- 1:20Speaker 3: Good afternoon, Craig. How about that? Dumbfounded? When I saw
- 1:25Speaker 3: the report that Nico Harrison was holding a meeting with
- 1:28Speaker 3: select members of the Dallas media, but they could not
- 1:31Speaker 3: record it. They couldn't bring tape recorders, they couldn't record
- 1:34Speaker 3: it with their phone, they couldn't video record it.
- 1:37Speaker 2: I can't believe that.
- 1:38Speaker 3: Here we are a month, two months removed from the
- 1:41Speaker 3: Leucodonta's trade, and Nico Harrison still does not get it.
- 1:45Speaker 3: I mean, it just screams insecurity, Craig. It screams of
- 1:48Speaker 3: This team is trying to defend their actions. But guess what,
- 1:52Speaker 3: you can't defend it. You've lost the trade, you've lost
- 1:55Speaker 3: the fan base. But they keep doing things that makes
- 1:58Speaker 3: it worse, in worse. I can't believe it.
- 2:01Speaker 1: Yeah. The thing I guess that really gets me is
- 2:06Speaker 1: what I'm not understanding about this is that surely, surely
- 2:13Speaker 1: he and the Dumont family and all of that Patrick
- 2:17Speaker 1: Dumont and the rest of the ownership group and all
- 2:19Speaker 1: that stuff, surely they understand now if they didn't initially,
- 2:27Speaker 1: how horrible this has become in terms of public relations,
- 2:30Speaker 1: for the organization, for the fan base, all those things.
- 2:35Speaker 1: And even if even if your idea was just to
- 2:39Speaker 1: try to make money off the whole thing, and he
- 2:41Speaker 1: really didn't care about the players, which that seems to
- 2:44Speaker 1: be screaming the message coming from them. But even if
- 2:47Speaker 1: that is indeed the case, wouldn't you want to do
- 2:52Speaker 1: something to at least put a little damage control on it?
- 2:57Speaker 1: And maybe the damage is irreparable now, But if you
- 3:01Speaker 1: thought it couldn't get worse, it gets worse with a
- 3:04Speaker 1: thing like this where somebody says, yeah, I'll meet with
- 3:07Speaker 1: some members of the media, but there's to be no
- 3:10Speaker 1: recording of this and uh and no photography and.
- 3:14Speaker 2: None of that.
- 3:15Speaker 1: What's the point I mean if you're maybe he's you know,
- 3:22Speaker 1: with whatever some members of the media to explain.
- 3:26Speaker 2: So, does that.
- 3:26Speaker 1: Mean that they in turn are not allowed to write
- 3:29Speaker 1: about that or talk about that on the air or
- 3:32Speaker 1: on camera or whatever. Is that what that means? If so,
- 3:37Speaker 1: what's the point of even having that meeting? Because if
- 3:41Speaker 1: you're thinking that maybe somewhere down the line that that
- 3:46Speaker 1: a columnist or whoever is in there is going to
- 3:50Speaker 1: do you a solid by not bashing you. That's that's
- 3:54Speaker 1: silly in its own right. So anyway, I when I
- 3:57Speaker 1: saw that, I was like, really so because maybe this
- 4:03Speaker 1: is on a media level kind of like what they
- 4:05Speaker 1: did last week. And here's what I mean by that
- 4:09Speaker 1: cameraon I listen. I understand the motivation behind doing the
- 4:17Speaker 1: tribute video to Luka Dancic. I think it would have
- 4:22Speaker 1: made them look worse if they just ignored it. So
- 4:27Speaker 1: I think they had to do that, and it was
- 4:31Speaker 1: really well done what they I don't know if they
- 4:35Speaker 1: were expecting this, but whether they were or not, the
- 4:38Speaker 1: unexpected consequence for a lot of people, it just made
- 4:41Speaker 1: it worse for fans a lot of times. In a
- 4:44Speaker 1: lot of cases, it just kind of inflamed their passions
- 4:47Speaker 1: all the more. You can't really control it at that point.
- 4:49Speaker 1: If you're the Mavericks. They didn't really have a choice.
- 4:52Speaker 1: They had to do the tribute video, even though it
- 4:55Speaker 1: was going to make people a lot of angrier. Well,
- 4:57Speaker 1: in this case, it's like, maybe we can, you know,
- 5:04Speaker 1: do a little damage control and have Nico explain it
- 5:10Speaker 1: to some of the media that covers the team. Extensively
- 5:13Speaker 1: or whatever, the select media whatever explain it. But all
- 5:18Speaker 1: that's going to do is backfire on the rest of
- 5:20Speaker 1: the media who aren't invited, who don't get to write about,
- 5:23Speaker 1: who don't get to record it. So that's the unintended
- 5:26Speaker 1: consequence there. So I I just I keep seeing them
- 5:30Speaker 1: blow one toe off of their foot time with this,
- 5:34Speaker 1: with every move they make. It's it's unfathomable to me
- 5:41Speaker 1: that an organization with professional people, whether you whether you
- 5:45Speaker 1: know basketball or not, and who is it Patrick Dumont
- 5:48Speaker 1: Cameron who readily admitted to not knowing you know whatever
- 5:52Speaker 1: for a pick and roll from picking his nose or whatever.
- 5:56Speaker 1: Even if you don't know basketball, you've got to have
- 6:01Speaker 1: some sense of understanding what moves like this are gonna
- 6:05Speaker 1: do in terms of alienating your fan base, your local media,
- 6:09Speaker 1: and even some national media.
- 6:11Speaker 3: It's almost like they want to control the narrative by saying, Okay,
- 6:15Speaker 3: we're gonna have these select people come in, these reporters
- 6:18Speaker 3: that we know, but we want to tell the story
- 6:21Speaker 3: our own way.
- 6:21Speaker 2: But the thing is, Craig, you can't do that.
- 6:24Speaker 3: The story's been told and Nico Harrison and Rick Welts,
- 6:28Speaker 3: the CEO, who also spoke with this select group of
- 6:30Speaker 3: Dallas media.
- 6:31Speaker 2: They don't understand it that you've already lost to trade.
- 6:34Speaker 3: No matter how many times you explain it, you're not
- 6:37Speaker 3: gonna be able to make it make sense.
- 6:39Speaker 4: Right.
- 6:39Speaker 3: It's like when someone cheats on their partner and they
- 6:41Speaker 3: keep coming back with different excuses in time and time again,
- 6:44Speaker 3: you know you've already cheated. It's too late, You've already
- 6:47Speaker 3: treated Luca Doncis. It's too late. And in one of
- 6:50Speaker 3: the comments from Rick welts that and it's funny because
- 6:54Speaker 3: it's screamed Jerry Jones and I think back to the
- 6:57Speaker 3: last this end of season press conference, and it may
- 7:01Speaker 3: have been even before the season started with Jerry Jones.
- 7:03Speaker 3: I think it was an aug nerd Well, Jerry Jones
- 7:06Speaker 3: and Stephen Jones and Mike McCarthy, and it may have
- 7:09Speaker 3: been forget Clarence Still may have asked the question about
- 7:13Speaker 3: can you sense the fan base is now apathetic? And
- 7:16Speaker 3: Stephen Jones said, well, no, look at our season ticket sales.
- 7:20Speaker 3: They've gone up right, which is complete bull crap because
- 7:24Speaker 3: we all know Dallas Cowboys fans are more apathetic than ever.
- 7:27Speaker 3: But Rick Welt said in this media Craig when asked
- 7:31Speaker 3: about you know, the the fiery fans and all of that,
- 7:35Speaker 3: and you know, the Channing fire and Eco and losing
- 7:38Speaker 3: the fan base, and Welt said, well, you know, actually
- 7:40Speaker 3: look at our season ticket Reneal Rate, it's gone up.
- 7:43Speaker 3: They don't get it, Craig Welts, Jerry Jones, Stephen Jones.
- 7:46Speaker 3: They don't understand what is happening to the city of
- 7:51Speaker 3: Dallas and how these two franchises are completely losing their
- 7:56Speaker 3: fan base for two separate reasons, but also two similar
- 8:00Speaker 3: reasons in that they're being run by brain dead people.
- 8:04Speaker 1: Yeah, I just it's just and I didn't think that
- 8:09Speaker 1: it could be made much worse than it has been made,
- 8:14Speaker 1: so it's.
- 8:17Speaker 2: But apparently it has been.
- 8:18Speaker 1: That's why I said, it's unfathomable to meet professional people
- 8:23Speaker 1: not understanding the damage that goes to your organization, whether
- 8:28Speaker 1: you're you know, a basketball purist or no basketball or whatever,
- 8:33Speaker 1: but just understanding how that alienates large groups of people.
- 8:39Speaker 1: And now they've you know, added it to those of
- 8:42Speaker 1: the media who are not allowed to be present for that.
- 8:45Speaker 1: You know, that's you're not going to win any friends
- 8:48Speaker 1: or influence anybody. By doing that. So anyway, that's it's made.
- 8:52Speaker 1: Let me put it to you this way, Cameron. It
- 8:55Speaker 1: has been well established on this program that the NBA
- 8:59Speaker 1: team you root for is the Oklahoma City Thunder. Given
- 9:02Speaker 1: that you're a long suffering and I do emphasize the
- 9:05Speaker 1: words suffering Cowboys fan, what do you think that fans
- 9:11Speaker 1: are like in Dallas who've been long suffering Cowboys and
- 9:16Speaker 1: Mavericks fans. What they're going through now with two owners
- 9:21Speaker 1: who continually alienate the fan base, at least the Rangers.
- 9:26Speaker 1: You know, when they when they stumble over themselves, they
- 9:29Speaker 1: try to make it right. And they made it right
- 9:32Speaker 1: in the most obvious way by winning a world championship
- 9:35Speaker 1: in twenty twenty three, So they bought themselves a few
- 9:38Speaker 1: years of grace, I think, but even with some of
- 9:42Speaker 1: the news that they've made in the past. But this,
- 9:45Speaker 1: you know, the Mavericks get to the NBA Finals a
- 9:47Speaker 1: year ago, and I think folks were excited about what
- 9:51Speaker 1: could come with healthy bodies, and then this deal comes
- 9:56Speaker 1: and it just starts to blow everything up. Can you
- 9:58Speaker 1: imagine what it must be like for long suffering Mavericks
- 10:01Speaker 1: and Cowboys fans?
- 10:02Speaker 3: Their mental health must be in the gutter right now, Greg,
- 10:06Speaker 3: And hey, you mentioned, you know, the Mavericks and Cowboys.
- 10:09Speaker 3: The Stars are completely collapsing right now. They're on a
- 10:13Speaker 3: six geame losing streak after looking like one of the
- 10:15Speaker 3: best teams in hockey. And then the Rangers, who after
- 10:17Speaker 3: an offseason of spending, can't hit the baseball. So things
- 10:21Speaker 3: aren't going great in Dallas right now for the professional
- 10:24Speaker 3: sports franchises.
- 10:26Speaker 1: Yeah, it's gonna be interesting to get in. But like
- 10:29Speaker 1: I said, there's hope for the Dallas Wings of the WNBA.
- 10:33Speaker 2: They had the number one of our all pick in
- 10:34Speaker 2: the draft.
- 10:34Speaker 1: They took Page Becker's They had what three picks in
- 10:38Speaker 1: the first fourteen. They got Madison Scott from Old Miss
- 10:42Speaker 1: that you know we saw. I called the game at
- 10:45Speaker 1: Ole Miss when Texas played them. You called the game
- 10:47Speaker 1: in the SEC tournament. She's a player. I really like her.
- 10:50Speaker 1: I think that's a that's a good addition to them.
- 10:53Speaker 1: So yeah, I mean there's some you know, maybe there's
- 10:56Speaker 1: some hope for the Dallas Wings if nobody else.
- 11:00Speaker 2: In the in the.
- 11:02Speaker 1: Dallas Fort Worth pro sports scene. All right, we've got
- 11:06Speaker 1: some other things to get to. Obviously, we'll talk some
- 11:08Speaker 1: college base Like I said, get some interesting notes about
- 11:12Speaker 1: this Texas UTRGV matchup that might otherwise might kind of
- 11:19Speaker 1: slide under your personal radar, even if you are a
- 11:22Speaker 1: Longhorn baseball fan. Ty Harrington will join us in the
- 11:25Speaker 1: four o'clock hour here in the booth. He's working the
- 11:26Speaker 1: telecast tonight on the SEC network. Plus Tier and Tyle
- 11:33Speaker 1: joined us, and we'll have our weekly conversation about college
- 11:36Speaker 1: baseball and the SEC in the state of Texas and
- 11:38Speaker 1: across the nation.
- 11:40Speaker 2: So we'll do that as well. Coming up, we have inconceivable.
- 11:43Speaker 1: This hour as well, so a lot to get to
- 11:46Speaker 1: and as always always you're certainly welcome to reach out
- 11:50Speaker 1: to us.
- 11:51Speaker 2: You can text the program.
- 11:52Speaker 1: All you do is just text the word Texas follow
- 11:55Speaker 1: by your question or comment to eight one five three zero.
- 11:59Speaker 1: So that's the word Texas followed by your question or
- 12:01Speaker 1: comment to eight one five three zero. Standard messaging and
- 12:05Speaker 1: data rates may apply. Also, you can reach out to
- 12:08Speaker 1: us via the talkback feature to the iHeartRadio app. The
- 12:11Speaker 1: new and improved iHeartRadio app easy and free to download,
- 12:16Speaker 1: and then you just search AM thirteen under the zone.
- 12:18Speaker 1: When it comes up, you'll see two buttons. One is
- 12:22Speaker 1: a little white like triangle arrow button. That's if you
- 12:25Speaker 1: want to listen to what's going on. But next to
- 12:27Speaker 1: it is a red button with a little white microphone.
- 12:29Speaker 1: You push that button and that activates the talkback feature
- 12:32Speaker 1: where you can leave us a message of up to
- 12:34Speaker 1: thirty seconds. Keep it clean. It is a family program,
- 12:37Speaker 1: but we'll go ahead and air that. Also through the
- 12:40Speaker 1: talkback feature, you'll have a chance to win tickets to
- 12:43Speaker 1: Lady Wilson will tell you about that coming up as well.
- 12:46Speaker 2: It's a Tuesday afternoon.
- 12:47Speaker 1: We're at the ballpark here at UFCU Dish fog Field
- 12:50Speaker 1: and this is AM thirteen under the zone here. It
- 12:52Speaker 1: is on this Tuesday, and Texas is to play ut
- 12:57Speaker 1: RGV tonight. Hey also to give folks a chance to
- 13:01Speaker 1: win a pair of tickets to see Lanny Wilson at
- 13:06Speaker 1: Moody Center. Look, I'm not the most up to speed
- 13:12Speaker 1: authority on country music, far from and in fact, but.
- 13:15Speaker 2: I do know who Landy Wilson is. I've seen Landy Wilson.
- 13:17Speaker 2: You know who Laney Wilson is.
- 13:19Speaker 4: Sure?
- 13:19Speaker 2: Yeah, love Landy Wilson.
- 13:21Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 13:21Speaker 1: Well, we're gonna give away a pair of tickets for
- 13:23Speaker 1: the show on September eighteenth at Moody Center. And here's
- 13:27Speaker 1: how you do it. You download I was just talking
- 13:30Speaker 1: about this a few minutes ago. You download the iHeartRadio
- 13:33Speaker 1: app and you search AM thirteen hundred the zone that
- 13:37Speaker 1: the app is free, easy to download. You just boom
- 13:40Speaker 1: pop up there on the smartphone. You search AM thirteen
- 13:43Speaker 1: hunder the zone. You're gonna see two buttons. One is
- 13:45Speaker 1: a white one like with the shape of a triangle
- 13:47Speaker 1: or an era. That's just to listen to what we've
- 13:50Speaker 1: got going on in the air, and that's quite handy.
- 13:52Speaker 1: But for the purposes of the contest, you want the
- 13:54Speaker 1: other button. It's a red button with a little white microphone.
- 13:57Speaker 1: You tap that and then you leave us a mess
- 14:00Speaker 1: with the keyword that you heard on this program, which
- 14:04Speaker 1: I'm getting ready to give you so again. You you know,
- 14:08Speaker 1: download the iHeartRadio app if you don't already have it,
- 14:11Speaker 1: search AM thirteen under the zone, tap the little red
- 14:14Speaker 1: button with a white microphone on it, and you leave
- 14:16Speaker 1: some message with the keyword.
- 14:18Speaker 2: Say I was listening to the Cragway Show.
- 14:20Speaker 1: I heard him say that the keyword yesterday's keyword was truck.
- 14:25Speaker 1: But today's keyword, the keyword is whirlwind. Whirlwind, So that's
- 14:33Speaker 1: the keyword today. Whirlwind.
- 14:37Speaker 3: Is that the name of a Lady Wilson song? Okay
- 14:39Speaker 3: song album? Who could say? Correct at this point? Just
- 14:42Speaker 3: entering the keyword and you'll find out.
- 14:44Speaker 1: Right, Okay, all right, So anyway, that's that's how you
- 14:46Speaker 1: do it. That's today's keyword is whirlwind. So again, if
- 14:50Speaker 1: you don't already have the iHeartRadio app, you download it
- 14:52Speaker 1: on your smartphone, really easy to do and it's free,
- 14:56Speaker 1: and then you search AM thirteen.
- 14:59Speaker 2: Under the zone it comes up, and then.
- 15:02Speaker 1: You hit the little white button with the red button
- 15:05Speaker 1: with the white microphone in it, and then you leave
- 15:07Speaker 1: us a message with the keyword you heard. We're win
- 15:10Speaker 1: to try to win a pair of tickets for Lady Wilson.
- 15:13Speaker 1: You'd be entered into the drawing if you can do that. Okay,
- 15:20Speaker 1: Non conference Tuesday in college baseball, and I'm going to
- 15:24Speaker 1: talk a little bit about this on the air with
- 15:26Speaker 1: Keith Moreland, and in fact, I'm even going to ask
- 15:28Speaker 1: Jim Shlastnao about this when I visited with him prior
- 15:31Speaker 1: to first pitch tonight. I've been hearing this and reading this.
- 15:38Speaker 1: You know, with regard to Texas that this is quote
- 15:41Speaker 1: unquote it's a short week because they have the game
- 15:45Speaker 1: tonight and then they have a Thursday Friday Saturday series
- 15:51Speaker 1: with Auburn coming in here.
- 15:55Speaker 2: All of that is true.
- 15:57Speaker 1: What is also true is that just about every division
- 16:00Speaker 1: college baseball program in the country this week has a
- 16:04Speaker 1: short week because most are in observance of Easter weekend.
- 16:09Speaker 1: Now I don't think it's one hundred percent the case.
- 16:14Speaker 2: I don't think.
- 16:15Speaker 1: I don't think that every single college baseball program is
- 16:24Speaker 1: is in observance of Easter Sunday and therefore is not
- 16:31Speaker 1: playing a game on Easter Sunday. There are some that
- 16:36Speaker 1: play on Easter Sunday. I remember, for years in the
- 16:39Speaker 1: Big Twelve Conference there was really only one holdout. Out
- 16:45Speaker 1: of all the schools in the Big Twelve Conference, there
- 16:49Speaker 1: was one holdout and it was Oklahoma State. For years,
- 16:54Speaker 1: Oklahoma State, if they were at home, would play an
- 17:00Speaker 1: Easter Sunday game. And guess what, that's the case again
- 17:04Speaker 1: this year they have a Friday Saturday Sunday series with Houston,
- 17:09Speaker 1: and if I remember correctly, I was told it's because
- 17:13Speaker 1: you know, like with the Major leagues. They get a
- 17:16Speaker 1: big attendance on Easter Sunday. They have a big crowd,
- 17:19Speaker 1: and so they like having that home Easter Sunday date. Now,
- 17:24Speaker 1: I will tell you this, if you're a visiting team,
- 17:27Speaker 1: you're not too crazy about it. You've got to travel
- 17:29Speaker 1: home after playing on Easter Sunday. But they've been like that.
- 17:33Speaker 1: There was also dispute a few years ago between Texas
- 17:37Speaker 1: and Oklahoma State, and there had been a change. It
- 17:44Speaker 1: might even have been when they changed to Josh Holiday
- 17:48Speaker 1: as a head coach or operations director or something like that,
- 17:52Speaker 1: and the operations people for Texas were working like a
- 17:57Speaker 1: year in advance, like you have to do intercollegiate athletic
- 18:00Speaker 1: to get hotel rooms reserved and all that sort of thing.
- 18:03Speaker 2: So at the time, the Big.
- 18:06Speaker 1: Twelve had suggested everybody play Thursday, Friday Saturday on Easter weekend,
- 18:10Speaker 1: and the ops folks at Texas asked the operations people
- 18:15Speaker 1: at Oklahoma State, you know, asked the ops people of
- 18:20Speaker 1: Oklahoma State, you know, is this going to be Thursday, Friday, Saturday.
- 18:26Speaker 1: Can we go in and set our set up our
- 18:29Speaker 1: arrangements that way? And they said yes. And then you
- 18:31Speaker 1: get several months on down the road and there was
- 18:33Speaker 1: a different operation staff and they said, oh, no, no, no,
- 18:35Speaker 1: we're playing on Easter Sunday. And they said, no, no, no,
- 18:38Speaker 1: We've already said hotel, Well, we play on Easter Sunday.
- 18:40Speaker 2: That's just what we do.
- 18:42Speaker 1: And Texas wound up appealing to the Big Twelve conference
- 18:46Speaker 1: about that, and the Big Twelve said, yeah, you told
- 18:48Speaker 1: them a year ago that it was going to be
- 18:51Speaker 1: Thursday through Saturday, so you've got to play Thursday through Saturday.
- 18:55Speaker 1: But Oklahoma State does like playing on Easter Sunday, and
- 18:58Speaker 1: there's some other programs across the country that'll do that,
- 19:00Speaker 1: but by and large, Easter Sunday is a day off
- 19:05Speaker 1: on the schedule, and and and being a day off
- 19:11Speaker 1: on the schedule means that you play Thursday, Friday, Saturday.
- 19:14Speaker 1: So uh, that'll be the case here with with the
- 19:19Speaker 1: Texas Auburn series, but not only the Texas Auburn series.
- 19:23Speaker 1: Every series, all six series in the SEC will be no,
- 19:31Speaker 1: I stand corrected. There's two that will be Friday Saturday
- 19:34Speaker 1: and Sunday. The sixth of the eight the sixth series
- 19:40Speaker 1: that will be Thursday, Friday Saturday will be Auburn at Texas, Texas,
- 19:46Speaker 1: A and M and Arkansas, Alabama at LSU, Georgia at Vanderbilt,
- 19:51Speaker 1: and Ole Miss at South Carolina.
- 19:53Speaker 2: Ole Miss, by the way, just lost. I had it,
- 19:55Speaker 2: had it on a monitor here.
- 19:56Speaker 1: Just lost a non conference home game to a sub
- 20:00Speaker 1: five hundred little rock team that is not good for
- 20:03Speaker 1: your RPI Arkansas Pine Bluff or Arkansas Little Rock. Little Rock,
- 20:07Speaker 1: Little Rock just beat them seven to three. Yeah not
- 20:11Speaker 1: and on Miss number eleven now and number eleven in
- 20:14Speaker 1: the country. So yeah, they just they just lost. It
- 20:20Speaker 1: just happened. Now seven to three is the final Little
- 20:22Speaker 1: Rock beat on Miss with that but anyway, uh, those
- 20:26Speaker 1: six series on Miss at South Carolina, Georgia at Vanderbilt,
- 20:29Speaker 1: Alabama at LSU Texas and M in Arkansas, Oklahoma at Missouri,
- 20:35Speaker 1: and Auburn at Texas our Thursday Friday Saturday. There are
- 20:39Speaker 1: two series that are Friday, Saturday and Sunday, and these
- 20:42Speaker 1: are set up for television. One of those is Kentucky
- 20:46Speaker 1: at Tennessee, even though their game on Easter Sunday is
- 20:50Speaker 1: just an SEC.
- 20:51Speaker 2: Network Plus game.
- 20:53Speaker 1: But Kentucky at Tennessee and Knoxville is Friday Saturday Sunday.
- 20:56Speaker 1: The other series that is Friday, Saturday and Sunday is
- 21:00Speaker 1: Florida at Mississippi State, and that entire series is televised
- 21:08Speaker 1: over the ESPN SEC family of networks. And like Friday Night,
- 21:15Speaker 1: the game's on SEC Network, just regular standard SEC network,
- 21:19Speaker 1: not SEC Network Plus. The Saturday night game is ESPN
- 21:23Speaker 1: two and the Sunday afternoon game is ESPN two. Now,
- 21:28Speaker 1: this is against the thirteenth and fourteenth place teams in
- 21:34Speaker 1: the conference. Right now, Mississippi State's five and ten in
- 21:37Speaker 1: the league and that's coming off taking a weekend series
- 21:39Speaker 1: from Alabama. Florida is four and eleven, and that's coming
- 21:42Speaker 1: off sweeping Missouri over the weekend. But it's Mississippi State
- 21:49Speaker 1: twenty two and fourteen, Florida twenty four and fourteen. Mississippi
- 21:52Speaker 1: State's five and ten in the league, Florida's four and
- 21:53Speaker 1: eleven the league, and all three games are going to
- 21:56Speaker 1: be on linear platforms. In other words, it's not going
- 21:58Speaker 1: to be on the streaming s SEC Network Plus. In
- 22:02Speaker 1: case you're wondering with regard to Texas, Thursday's game with
- 22:06Speaker 1: Auburn is SEC Network Plus. Friday's game is SEC Network
- 22:10Speaker 1: Plus and a Saturday's game is SEC Network plus all
- 22:15Speaker 1: three games between number one Texas and number eight Auburn
- 22:19Speaker 1: the number they're as high as number six and one
- 22:21Speaker 1: of the polls, but all three of those games are
- 22:25Speaker 1: on the streaming platform channel there.
- 22:30Speaker 2: So that's that's just to let you know.
- 22:33Speaker 1: You know, it's a busy time obviously in college baseball,
- 22:36Speaker 1: but some of these programming decisions from the SEC and
- 22:40Speaker 1: the ESPN family networks are with the mindset that they
- 22:46Speaker 1: try to get every team on the linear channels at
- 22:51Speaker 1: least a couple of times, and in the case of
- 22:54Speaker 1: this Florida Mississippi State series, all three games. Now, this
- 22:59Speaker 1: was done back some time when Florida was expected to
- 23:01Speaker 1: be a contender at a good team. Remember, Florida started
- 23:03Speaker 1: off as a top ten team. They completely fell off
- 23:06Speaker 1: the radar. They're not ranked right now, but they do
- 23:08Speaker 1: have a little bit of momentum coming off sweeping a
- 23:11Speaker 1: really bad Missouri team that is er and fifteen in
- 23:15Speaker 1: the league right now, the teams with the momentum in
- 23:17Speaker 1: the conference right now, really and truly, yes, you could
- 23:22Speaker 1: say Texas, even though they didn't sweep Kentucky, they won
- 23:25Speaker 1: the series and they've not dropped a series this year,
- 23:29Speaker 1: either conference or non conference, or twenty nine and five. Overall,
- 23:33Speaker 1: theyre thirteen and two. Arkansas dropped two of three at Georgia,
- 23:38Speaker 1: but they're only one game back. Tennessee has a little
- 23:43Speaker 1: bit of momentum. They won two of three in their series.
- 23:46Speaker 1: Georgia has some momentum having won two out of three
- 23:48Speaker 1: after being swept by Texas week before going backward. Is
- 23:52Speaker 1: LSU at ten and five having been swept by Auburn,
- 23:55Speaker 1: and Auburn really does have the momentum right now at
- 23:57Speaker 1: nine and six in the league coming in. So for
- 24:03Speaker 1: those who said, well, Texas has really played its most
- 24:06Speaker 1: difficult series at home.
- 24:07Speaker 2: It's worked out that way.
- 24:09Speaker 1: Mississippi State was not viewed in that prism at the
- 24:12Speaker 1: start of the season, and that's where Texas played its
- 24:14Speaker 1: first ever Southeastern Conference series, and it was a sweep
- 24:18Speaker 1: and it worked out. Missouri was not expected to be
- 24:21Speaker 1: a contender, but I don't think anybody expected them to
- 24:23Speaker 1: be oh to fifteen at the midway mark Conference playing.
- 24:26Speaker 1: Texas swept that series, and then, of course Georgia was
- 24:29Speaker 1: number three in the country. LSU was number two in
- 24:32Speaker 1: the country. LSU took the Friday night game from Texas
- 24:36Speaker 1: and then the Long Orangs one Saturday Sunday Georgia. They
- 24:39Speaker 1: swept all three games of that series. So it's worked out.
- 24:43Speaker 1: Now here's where the rubber is going to meet the
- 24:46Speaker 1: road for the Long Worns. You have Auburn coming in
- 24:48Speaker 1: right now, Auburn coming off a series sweep of LSU.
- 24:53Speaker 1: Then you're going to play that other team that has
- 24:55Speaker 1: momentum right now.
- 24:57Speaker 2: That's Texas A and M.
- 24:59Speaker 1: The Aggie who started one and nine in the league
- 25:02Speaker 1: have won five in a row in conference play and
- 25:06Speaker 1: six in a row overall. So Texas A and M
- 25:09Speaker 1: is now six and nine in the league. Yes, they're
- 25:12Speaker 1: tied for twelve or eleventh, I guess you would say
- 25:18Speaker 1: in the league right now with Kentucky at six and
- 25:22Speaker 1: nine in the conference. But they've put their head back
- 25:26Speaker 1: above water in overall at twenty and fifteen, and they've
- 25:31Speaker 1: also won seven other last ten And it is, after all,
- 25:35Speaker 1: what do you call it the Cotton Holdings lone star
- 25:38Speaker 1: showdown rivalry series? It's Long Orange v Aggies, and there's
- 25:44Speaker 1: that extra bit of incentive A and M. What would
- 25:47Speaker 1: Jim schlas Nagle and you know and Nolan Kane and
- 25:49Speaker 1: Max Wiener and other members of Schlass's staff coming over
- 25:53Speaker 1: to Austin. Michael Early initially was coming over and then
- 25:55Speaker 1: was off for the head coaching job and was on
- 25:58Speaker 1: the Texas coaching staff what one day, and then went
- 26:01Speaker 1: back over to A and M to be the head
- 26:03Speaker 1: coach there. So there's all of that emotional incentive going
- 26:07Speaker 1: at So Texas has Auburn, a hot Auburn team coming in.
- 26:11Speaker 1: They have a road game in between down in San Marcus.
- 26:15Speaker 1: They're only midweek non conference road game. They play at
- 26:22Speaker 1: bobcat Ballpark in San Marcus. And of course we know
- 26:25Speaker 1: Texas State won the midweek game here back a couple
- 26:29Speaker 1: of weeks ago, so you had that sandwiched in between
- 26:32Speaker 1: the Auburn and Texas A and M series. Then they
- 26:36Speaker 1: have another non conference game. I think it's against Prairie
- 26:42Speaker 1: View at home after that, as I look at the scheduled, yes,
- 26:45Speaker 1: it would be.
- 26:47Speaker 2: Against Prairie View on the twenty ninth, and then they
- 26:50Speaker 2: go to Arkansas.
- 26:51Speaker 1: So that's gonna be and two of their final three
- 26:55Speaker 1: series of the season in conference play or on the road.
- 27:00Speaker 1: They have five series left, three hundred home two are
- 27:02Speaker 1: on the road. Well, they have back to back home
- 27:04Speaker 1: series and then they have a road series in Arkansas.
- 27:10Speaker 1: They have Florida here on the final weekend of the
- 27:12Speaker 1: regular season for home games, and then they and then
- 27:17Speaker 1: they go to Norman to finish out the regular season
- 27:19Speaker 1: in Oklahoma. So anyway, there's still a lot to be done,
- 27:22Speaker 1: a lot to be accomplished. That's one thing that James
- 27:25Speaker 1: loastn Negle has pointed out repeatedly, not only that this
- 27:30Speaker 1: is a team that has been really beaten up by injuries.
- 27:33Speaker 1: Max Belue with the thumb injury, probably out until probably
- 27:40Speaker 1: the conference tournament. I hope you have him back by then.
- 27:43Speaker 1: There's maybe a little bit of outside of hope, maybe
- 27:45Speaker 1: he can heal up and be back perhaps for the
- 27:48Speaker 1: Oklahoma series. But but no promises there no promises on
- 27:52Speaker 1: that or even that he'd be ready for the conference tournament.
- 27:56Speaker 1: And whoter Alabama we don't know yet. And then you
- 28:00Speaker 1: have Adrian Rodriguez who had that edema, that blood bruised
- 28:06Speaker 1: thing right.
- 28:07Speaker 2: At the handmad bone. At least he didn't fractal the
- 28:10Speaker 2: handmade bone.
- 28:11Speaker 1: He's been able to come back and take left handed swings,
- 28:14Speaker 1: but that's obviously going to limit his ability to be
- 28:17Speaker 1: in the lnup only against rocky handed pitching for that,
- 28:22Speaker 1: and they've worked him some of the outfield as well.
- 28:23Speaker 2: As the age.
- 28:25Speaker 1: Uh So you have that, and then hopefully Ethan Mendoza's okay.
- 28:28Speaker 1: He really got banged up in the Sunday game at
- 28:33Speaker 1: Kentucky last weekend rolled over on the shoulder making a
- 28:36Speaker 1: diving attempt and a stop of a ball.
- 28:40Speaker 2: Hopefully he's all right as well.
- 28:41Speaker 1: We'll try to find out some more about them than
- 28:43Speaker 1: we will before we take care for the baseball game tonight.
- 28:46Speaker 1: Up next, however, we have Indcevable on AM thirteen under
- 28:50Speaker 1: the Zone, second hour of the program. Here on thirteen
- 28:53Speaker 1: under the Zone, as we come away from UFCU Dish
- 28:55Speaker 1: fogg Field, Texas Longhorns set to host the Macaros of
- 28:58Speaker 1: ut Rio gram Valley tonight. You'll hear that on one
- 29:01Speaker 1: O three point one FM, Austin's eighty station, and so
- 29:05Speaker 1: to come your way on one oh three point one
- 29:07Speaker 1: FM six fifteen pregame start time six thirty is the
- 29:11Speaker 1: first pitch on that one round Rock Express Baseball at
- 29:14Speaker 1: eight o'clock.
- 29:15Speaker 2: I guess what.
- 29:16Speaker 1: Cam seven point fifty is the pregame start time from Reno,
- 29:19Speaker 1: Nevada as they play the Reno Aces, So that'll be
- 29:22Speaker 1: here on the zone. But one of three point one
- 29:24Speaker 1: FM is where you'll catch an ice gam You can
- 29:25Speaker 1: also hear it obviously on the Texas Longhorns app, the
- 29:29Speaker 1: LHN app, and you can connect to it from the
- 29:31Speaker 1: iHeartRadio app.
- 29:33Speaker 2: Very easy to do.
- 29:34Speaker 1: One thing, I want to mention a note here and
- 29:36Speaker 1: then we'll take a break and I'm because I'm going
- 29:40Speaker 1: to run down and visit with Long Horns head coach
- 29:43Speaker 1: Jim Slasnagel here and we'll let you hear some of
- 29:46Speaker 1: the comments coming up here in a few minutes. But
- 29:51Speaker 1: we did a lot on the Masters yesterday with Rory
- 29:53Speaker 1: McElroy finally completing the career Grand Slam, dramatic victory and
- 30:00Speaker 1: all of that. Cam, have you seen what's happening with
- 30:04Speaker 1: him with the prize.
- 30:05Speaker 2: Money, the four point two million dollars?
- 30:09Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 30:09Speaker 1: Have you seen what's happened with that? Well, let's bring everything.
- 30:14Speaker 1: So it was a record breaking four point two million
- 30:17Speaker 1: dollars or in British money three point three million pounds,
- 30:21Speaker 1: largest perse in Master's history.
- 30:23Speaker 2: That was a twenty one million dollar perse.
- 30:27Speaker 1: But I felt compelled to bring this up because what
- 30:30Speaker 1: is today today's tax day?
- 30:32Speaker 4: Right?
- 30:32Speaker 1: M hmm?
- 30:33Speaker 2: Well, Rory lives in Florida.
- 30:35Speaker 1: As we know, Florida, like Texas, does not have a
- 30:39Speaker 1: state income tax, but his winnings are fully subject to
- 30:44Speaker 1: you as federal taxes. According to tax expert Paul Barram,
- 30:50Speaker 1: the winnings in Augusta face a thirty seven percent federal
- 30:54Speaker 1: tax rate, and additional charges will bring the effective rate
- 30:59Speaker 1: to over forty two percent. What does that mean about
- 31:04Speaker 1: one point eight million dollars will be pulled out of
- 31:09Speaker 1: his prize money.
- 31:11Speaker 2: He's still taking home two point four million.
- 31:14Speaker 1: Uh but yeah, he's gonna he's gonna lose a good
- 31:17Speaker 1: chunk of change out of that due to taxes now
- 31:22Speaker 1: from the department of perspective, since we can all keep perspective,
- 31:26Speaker 1: uh A. Sports finance professor Rob Wilson said, quote. While
- 31:30Speaker 1: federal and state taxes in the US could see McCrory
- 31:33Speaker 1: lose anywhere from forty to fifty forty five to fifty
- 31:36Speaker 1: percent of his winnings, the symbolic and commercial value of
- 31:40Speaker 1: winning the Masters far outweighs the immediate net income loss.
- 31:45Speaker 1: Even after tax, a first place prize from around two
- 31:49Speaker 1: point seven million would still leave maccrory with approximately one
- 31:53Speaker 1: point five million uh to in take home earnings. More importantly,
- 31:59Speaker 1: this victory now come pleachs his career Grand Slam, unlocking
- 32:02Speaker 1: major off course earnings and further endorsements from the likes
- 32:06Speaker 1: of Nike. The longer term commercial upside from sponsors, branding,
- 32:10Speaker 1: and new markets is far more valuable than the prize
- 32:14Speaker 1: check itself. And then when you add to it cam
- 32:17Speaker 1: that his prize money for his career now exceeds one
- 32:20Speaker 1: hundred and sixty million dollars, He's up there with Tiger
- 32:23Speaker 1: is one of only two golfers to break the one
- 32:26Speaker 1: hundred million dollar barrier in PGA tourer earnings. So, in
- 32:30Speaker 1: other words, don't shed any tears for Rory, but understand
- 32:34Speaker 1: he ain't taking all that prize money home with him.
- 32:36Speaker 3: Yeah, I'm about to say, like, I'm not really shitting
- 32:39Speaker 3: any tears because you know, five majors, you know, he
- 32:41Speaker 3: wins a couple of times on the PJA Tour, plus endorsements.
- 32:45Speaker 3: He's fine, you know, he's fine, and I'm sure he's
- 32:48Speaker 3: just happy to have a green jacket in his closet
- 32:51Speaker 3: versus the what though he's gonna have end up with
- 32:54Speaker 3: three point one million dollars then or less than that?
- 32:56Speaker 3: He said one point seven and it's taking out or
- 32:58Speaker 3: one point two one point seven is coming out.
- 33:02Speaker 1: But you know, and here's something else, I've read some
- 33:05Speaker 1: notes about the green jacket.
- 33:06Speaker 2: I didn't you know.
- 33:07Speaker 1: I didn't know, and I found out earlier last week
- 33:11Speaker 1: that you only get to keep It's kind of like
- 33:13Speaker 1: the Stanley Cup. You only get to keep the jacket
- 33:15Speaker 1: for one year, and then it goes back into the rack,
- 33:18Speaker 1: it goes.
- 33:18Speaker 2: Back into the closet.
- 33:19Speaker 1: What I also did not know was that the green
- 33:24Speaker 1: jacket that they put on him was not the one
- 33:26Speaker 1: that's going to actually be his and his name. It's
- 33:29Speaker 1: a green jacket that belongs to like a club member
- 33:31Speaker 1: that most closely approximates his measurements.
- 33:36Speaker 2: Thirty eight regular? By the way, is he really thirty eight? Regular?
- 33:41Speaker 4: Boy?
- 33:41Speaker 2: Is he in shape?
- 33:43Speaker 1: Makes me almost ashamed to mention mine because coming up
- 33:47Speaker 1: in a couple of weeks, actually it's probably it's next month.
- 33:51Speaker 1: A little inside of a month is the annual Texas
- 33:54Speaker 1: High School Football Hall of Fame induction banquet and I
- 33:59Speaker 1: serviced mat ceremonies for that. Patrick Mahomes is going in
- 34:05Speaker 1: by the way this year and he's going to be
- 34:06Speaker 1: there for this. It'll be in Waco there next month
- 34:10Speaker 1: in May. And they added something new this year. They
- 34:15Speaker 1: wanted a Hall of Fame blazer, kind of what they
- 34:19Speaker 1: do with the Pro Football Hall of Fame. They want
- 34:20Speaker 1: to the board, and the board voted to award blazers
- 34:30Speaker 1: to all incoming members and then you know some are
- 34:34Speaker 1: in the past and things like that. And they told
- 34:36Speaker 1: me that they wanted to give me a blazer so
- 34:40Speaker 1: that I can also wear the blazer during the ceremony
- 34:44Speaker 1: when I'm serving as master's ceremonies as well as being
- 34:47Speaker 1: inducted as a member of the Texas High School Football
- 34:50Speaker 1: Hall of Fame back in twenty seventeen or twenty sixteen.
- 34:54Speaker 1: So I said, sure, I'm honored, that's great or whatever.
- 34:57Speaker 1: And then they asked me for my measurements and they
- 34:58Speaker 1: had to give them my measurement. It's there so anyway,
- 35:01Speaker 1: but they say they'll have it ready and it's our
- 35:03Speaker 1: good friend Carlton Dixon, the lifetime Longhorn whose company Outstanding
- 35:08Speaker 1: Apparel company is actually is actually putting together these blazers,
- 35:12Speaker 1: and it's supposed to be a really sharp looking gray blazer.
- 35:16Speaker 4: Cam.
- 35:16Speaker 1: It won't beat banana yellow or bright orange like bowl
- 35:19Speaker 1: game representative blazers. It's gonna be like a nice, classy
- 35:23Speaker 1: looking gray blazer.
- 35:25Speaker 2: So I'm okay with that. That'll work, all right, Cam.
- 35:29Speaker 1: Is gonna take you through the next segment when I
- 35:31Speaker 1: go down and visit with Longhorn's head coach Jim Schlasnankle.
- 35:34Speaker 1: But we will hear from Schloss and coming up in
- 35:36Speaker 1: the next hour, we'll visit Ty Harrington will be here
- 35:40Speaker 1: in the booth with us.
- 35:40Speaker 2: And we'll talk from college baseball.
- 35:42Speaker 1: So all of that and more still coming when we
- 35:44Speaker 1: continue from UFCU Dish far Field.
- 35:46Speaker 2: I'm thirteen under the zone.
- 35:47Speaker 3: We continue here on this Tuesday afternoon on the Craig
- 35:50Speaker 3: Ways showed Cameron Parkway through Craigway, stepping aside real quick
- 35:53Speaker 3: to visit with Texas Baseball head coach Jim Slostangle. Is
- 35:56Speaker 3: the Texas Longhorns back in Austin this week and weekend
- 36:01Speaker 3: as well and tonight hosting the Vaccaros of the University
- 36:04Speaker 3: of Texas Rio Grand Valley for a non conference matchup
- 36:08Speaker 3: Texas coming off a two out of three series victory
- 36:12Speaker 3: over the Kentucky Wildcats in Lexington, and prepare for a
- 36:16Speaker 3: red hot Auburn Tigers baseball club this weekend. But tonight
- 36:21Speaker 3: six fifteen airtimes six thirty first pitch, and you can
- 36:24Speaker 3: listen to it right here on iHeartRadio Network on one
- 36:28Speaker 3: O three one FM, Austin's eighties station. Later on tonight
- 36:33Speaker 3: seven fifty pm, airtime eight oh five, first pitch the
- 36:36Speaker 3: Round Rock Express. You can hear Rolin Cobray right here

- 36:45Speaker 3: comes up, a couple programming notes for next week NFL
- 36:49Speaker 3: Draft Thursday, seven o'clock, we're gonna hear the names of
- 36:53Speaker 3: possibly three Longhorns called in the first round. In the

- 38:00Speaker 3: Mark Henry and Craig White going to bring you a
- 38:03Speaker 3: special edition of Longhordon's Game Day Live from Daryl K.
- 38:07Speaker 3: Memorial Tech Sorry Daryl K. Royal Texas Memorial Stadium starting
- 38:11Speaker 3: at noon until two pm, So come out. We're going
- 38:14Speaker 3: to talk all things Texas football, some inside information on
- 38:19Speaker 3: how spring practice is going. We're going to visit with
- 38:21Speaker 3: special guests, reporters, all that and more so a lot
- 38:23Speaker 3: to look forward to next week and we ask you
- 38:26Speaker 3: to come out, enjoin us, say hi, I say what's up,
- 38:28Speaker 3: support the show, and enjoy all the fun festivities at
- 38:32Speaker 3: Twin Peach Round Rock and the fun festivities outside of DKR. Okay,
- 38:38Speaker 3: the Nico iam Aliava story is one that I don't
- 38:42Speaker 3: think has surprised a lot of people. It's eventually this
- 38:45Speaker 3: is going to happen right where a star player out
- 38:48Speaker 3: of school was eventually going to hold out. It's been
- 38:51Speaker 3: part of professional sports for decades now and it's starting
- 38:55Speaker 3: to trickle in to college football. It's going to happen,
- 38:59Speaker 3: call basketball, baseball, any other sport where NIL exists, and
- 39:03Speaker 3: I don't think the house settlement is going to fix it.
- 39:05Speaker 3: But one thing's for sure. A lot you know, there's
- 39:08Speaker 3: people who are on the side of Tennessee and Josh
- 39:10Speaker 3: Hopeol there's people on the side of Iamaliava. It's a
- 39:14Speaker 3: lose loose and the latest situation, this is coming from
- 39:17Speaker 3: Pete nkos On on three Sports, is that teams now
- 39:21Speaker 3: are waiting to see if the price tag will drop
- 39:24Speaker 3: for iam Aliava Now. Nico signed an exclusive, in first
- 39:29Speaker 3: of its kind, four year NIL deal with Tennessee as
- 39:33Speaker 3: a senior in High School approximately about an eight million
- 39:37Speaker 3: dollar contract with Tennessee's NIL collective Spire Sports Group, and
- 39:42Speaker 3: he included an upfront payment of three hundred and fifty
- 39:46Speaker 3: thousand dollars. So iam Aliava was set to make about
- 39:49Speaker 3: two point two two point five million dollars going to
- 39:53Speaker 3: be a sophomore of the season. Now, his dad, who
- 39:57Speaker 3: acts as his agent, because Nico does not have an agent.
- 40:00Speaker 3: His dad and his camp and I'm assuming Niko believed
- 40:04Speaker 3: that they could make more money from the NIL front
- 40:07Speaker 3: and more money as in about four or five million dollars,
- 40:11Speaker 3: which is what led to the disagreement with Nico in
- 40:16Speaker 3: Tennessee and Josh Hopel and eventually led to Nico being
- 40:19Speaker 3: dismissed from the football program. Well, you know, we knew
- 40:22Speaker 3: there was gonna be some interest surrounding Nico, who was
- 40:24Speaker 3: a high profile recruit. Even though he didn't have a
- 40:27Speaker 3: fantastic into his season last year in Tennessee, he's still
- 40:31Speaker 3: a high upside quarterback. Wants to get that four or
- 40:34Speaker 3: five million dollar mark. Well, he's not getting it right now.
- 40:36Speaker 3: UNC and there's reports that he was tied to UNC
- 40:40Speaker 3: and Bill Belichick. Well, they have have backed off and
- 40:44Speaker 3: Pete Naikos reporting that there are multiple programs that are
- 40:49Speaker 3: open to sign him if he drops down to the
- 40:52Speaker 3: one million dollar price Tech.
- 40:54Speaker 2: Now, remember he was going.
- 40:55Speaker 3: To get two point two to two point five million
- 40:57Speaker 3: dollars at Tennessee this season. Now, if he can't find
- 41:01Speaker 3: another program that's willing to pay that four or five
- 41:04Speaker 3: million dollar mark, he may end up losing money out
- 41:08Speaker 3: of this whole debacle. On three, reporting that UCLA has
- 41:12Speaker 3: emerged as a school in the mix to lend the quarterback.
- 41:14Speaker 3: Remember iam ali Avas from Long Beach, California, UNC at
- 41:19Speaker 3: one time was part of that discussion.
- 41:21Speaker 2: They have dropped out.
- 41:22Speaker 3: Now we're here in Tulane possibly as a team that
- 41:25Speaker 3: could be tied to Iamaliyava and USC Notre Dame also
- 41:30Speaker 3: we're in the mix over the weekend, but latest reports
- 41:33Speaker 3: is that they have not confirmed whether or not the
- 41:35Speaker 3: Trojans or the fighting Ours are interested in adding him. Now,
- 41:39Speaker 3: remember he can't come to an SEC school because he
- 41:43Speaker 3: played for Tennessee and because it's passed every first No, sorry,
- 41:47Speaker 3: he can, but he will not be eligible to play
- 41:49Speaker 3: this season. So if he wants to transfer to Georgia
- 41:52Speaker 3: or Oklahoma or whoever, he has to sit out the year.
- 41:56Speaker 3: So that's why he would likely land at another school
- 41:58Speaker 3: like Notre Dame or.
- 41:59Speaker 2: US or U s LA.
- 42:01Speaker 3: But spring practice is ending here this week, this next week,
- 42:07Speaker 3: So wherever he ends up, he's going to have to
- 42:10Speaker 3: he's gonna be well well behind in terms of learning
- 42:13Speaker 3: the playbook, the coaches, the players. I mean, he won't
- 42:16Speaker 3: really get his first crack at practicing with the team
- 42:19Speaker 3: until August, So it puts him behind the eight ball,
- 42:22Speaker 3: and it puts whatever team that is trying to sign
- 42:25Speaker 3: him behind the eight ball as well. Just because you
- 42:28Speaker 3: know he's a great quarterback doesn't mean and you know,
- 42:30Speaker 3: great might be carrying a lot of work there. Just
- 42:32Speaker 3: because he's a high potential type quarterback doesn't mean it's
- 42:37Speaker 3: going to work out for both parties. And this just
- 42:40Speaker 3: really in the end ends up hurting Tennessee, it hurts Imaliava,
- 42:44Speaker 3: and it's hurting the whole game of football. But you
- 42:47Speaker 3: know it's I don't really blame Imaliava. I don't blame Tennessee.
- 42:53Speaker 3: The blame resides with the NCAA and how there is
- 42:57Speaker 3: still zero, zero oversight and how any of this is
- 43:02Speaker 3: going to be controlled how it's going to be fixed.
- 43:05Speaker 3: And as of right now, I mean, we're still waiting
- 43:08Speaker 3: on the house settlement, which I believe this Saturday we'll
- 43:11Speaker 3: find out. I believe it's going to go through. But
- 43:14Speaker 3: stuff like this will continue to happen in college football.
- 43:19Speaker 3: It's just a matter of time. It will happen at
- 43:21Speaker 3: a school like Texas because you look at Tennessee, they're
- 43:24Speaker 3: a college football playoff team this past season. Going into
- 43:27Speaker 3: this season, you know, still going to be a very
- 43:30Speaker 3: good football program. But it's not about winning national championships.
- 43:34Speaker 3: It's about how much money you can make. And that's
- 43:37Speaker 3: what happens when you allow these players to make money,
- 43:40Speaker 3: but you do it without any oversight. There's got to
- 43:43Speaker 3: be a way to fix this going forward. And just
- 43:46Speaker 3: an awful situation for Tennessee and for Imliova. And we
- 43:50Speaker 3: heard coach tis Keisha talk about it yesterday during his
- 43:55Speaker 3: media availability where he said he felt for Hopel, he
- 43:58Speaker 3: said he felt for Imaliova, but God to do what's
- 44:01Speaker 3: best for your team going forward. I believe Craig is
- 44:06Speaker 3: back up in the broadcast both at their visiting with
- 44:09Speaker 3: head coach sim Slasnegel.
- 44:13Speaker 1: Back up here and we'll hear that conversation wish Lass
- 44:16Speaker 1: coming up next next segment, so we'll have that that's
- 44:21Speaker 1: just around the corner. So we'll look forward to bringing
- 44:25Speaker 1: folks that deal. So, and I agree with you, Cam
- 44:28Speaker 1: and what you know, we heard what Sark was saying
- 44:31Speaker 1: about it. This is a difficult position for college football programs,
- 44:37Speaker 1: not just a head coach and not just a student athlete,
- 44:39Speaker 1: but college programs in general to have to deal with
- 44:44Speaker 1: now because.
- 44:47Speaker 2: There's going to be.
- 44:49Speaker 1: Advisors, agents, whatever, certainly parents involved.
- 44:54Speaker 2: Who are going to.
- 44:59Speaker 1: Exp affect you know, a certain number or certain benefits,
- 45:04Speaker 1: certain things that are now legal and under NCAA rules
- 45:09Speaker 1: to accept. And there will be college football programs who
- 45:16Speaker 1: either they can't afford it, or feel that it sets
- 45:21Speaker 1: a bad example, or for whatever reason, decide that's unacceptable.
- 45:27Speaker 1: So it puts them in a difficult position. And then,
- 45:30Speaker 1: as you pointed out yesterday in the case of Eco
- 45:33Speaker 1: i am Alaiava, here's a guy who his.
- 45:40Speaker 2: You know, kind of he kind of drew a line
- 45:43Speaker 2: in the sand.
- 45:43Speaker 1: He and his family his representation about what they needed
- 45:50Speaker 1: to have, what they thought that they needed to have,
- 45:53Speaker 1: and as a result of that, he was told by
- 46:00Speaker 1: Josh Hypel that that was unacceptable. They couldn't do that.
- 46:05Speaker 1: So he misses a practice. He then is kind of
- 46:08Speaker 1: removed from the roster. He goes into the portal and
- 46:10Speaker 1: all of this sudden. As you pointed out, it's kind
- 46:12Speaker 1: of a tough situation on his end because now being
- 46:16Speaker 1: in the portal, he can't what he has to sit
- 46:19Speaker 1: a heere if he's going to transfer inside of it,
- 46:22Speaker 1: So if it's an intra conference transfer, in other words,
- 46:26Speaker 1: if he transfers to another.
- 46:27Speaker 2: SEC school, m Yeah.
- 46:28Speaker 3: So at that point, you know, when's the last time
- 46:32Speaker 3: you've seen a player set out a year willingly since
- 46:35Speaker 3: before you know the new transfer rules coming in. So
- 46:38Speaker 3: you think he goes somewhere West coast. But if you're
- 46:41Speaker 3: a team like UCLA or or USC unless you just
- 46:44Speaker 3: have no quarterback going in the fall camp or what
- 46:46Speaker 3: you've seen out of your quarterbacks, I mean, it's a
- 46:49Speaker 3: huge risk to take him because if he's asking for
- 46:51Speaker 3: four million dollars, Craig, you're paying four million dollars. Now
- 46:55Speaker 3: he comes into your locker room, all these guys are
- 46:57Speaker 3: sitting around like, are you kidding me? This kid's making
- 46:59Speaker 3: five million dollars he doesn't know anyone on the team probably,
- 47:02Speaker 3: and now he's only going to have the summer and
- 47:04Speaker 3: fall to get ready for the season.
- 47:06Speaker 2: It's a huge risk. Yeah. You know, when the.
- 47:12Speaker 1: When the whole nil thing started, there was a lot
- 47:16Speaker 1: of speculation that you know, quarterbacks or running backs or whoever,
- 47:23Speaker 1: star players might be accruing things that other members of
- 47:30Speaker 1: the team would not beginning. And yet by and large,
- 47:34Speaker 1: we didn't hear of a great deal of issue with
- 47:38Speaker 1: that with regard to football program I did hear about
- 47:41Speaker 1: it with regard to some collegiate baseball programs that had
- 47:44Speaker 1: happened to but with regard to football programs, we didn't
- 47:48Speaker 1: hear an awful lot about it. And then of course
- 47:50Speaker 1: Texas stepped up with its set of collectives and the
- 47:53Speaker 1: pancake factor and all those sort of stuff. So that
- 47:56Speaker 1: and then of course the Texas won fund kind of
- 48:01Speaker 1: you know, through one layer over all of that to
- 48:04Speaker 1: make sure that student athletes were taken care of. So
- 48:08Speaker 1: it wasn't initially as big a concern as a lot
- 48:13Speaker 1: of folks thought about him.
- 48:14Speaker 2: But this is a different set of circumstances.
- 48:16Speaker 1: Can because there was an outfront number that everybody has
- 48:22Speaker 1: now seen and heard that it went from two point
- 48:25Speaker 1: four million dollars to four million dollars was the demand.
- 48:30Speaker 1: And now it sticks out like a sore thumb when
- 48:34Speaker 1: he walks into another locker room, whatever school that might be,
- 48:38Speaker 1: to say nothing of the fact that whichever school agrees
- 48:43Speaker 1: to give him that amount of money, or they negotiate
- 48:48Speaker 1: an amount that works, whatever he and he shows up there,
- 48:53Speaker 1: you know, what does that say to the other schools
- 48:55Speaker 1: in that particular schools conference, Because I have a feeling,
- 48:59Speaker 1: as you point that, he's probably not gonna be on
- 49:01Speaker 1: an SEC roster now since they're beyond the deadline on that.
- 49:06Speaker 1: Could be in the Big Ten, could be in the
- 49:07Speaker 1: acc who knows where he might be. But you know,
- 49:13Speaker 1: it might put things in a real uncomfortable spot simply because.
- 49:19Speaker 2: It stands out by itself. It's not.
- 49:23Speaker 1: As gray as it would be with a group of
- 49:26Speaker 1: players coming in or recruits coming in.
- 49:30Speaker 2: Where you.
- 49:33Speaker 1: Say, well, this group is getting this or this group
- 49:36Speaker 1: is getting that or whatever. But one guy who wasn't
- 49:40Speaker 1: already in the program who comes in, and I think
- 49:43Speaker 1: that's the difference here. One guy who was not already
- 49:47Speaker 1: in the program transfers in with that kind of shall
- 49:53Speaker 1: we say, financial windfall may not sit well with his
- 49:58Speaker 1: newfound teammates or coaches no matter. And coaches, by the way,
- 50:02Speaker 1: can have all the lectures that they want with the
- 50:04Speaker 1: team about hey, you accept this guy, he's your teammate now,
- 50:08Speaker 1: you know, put yourself beyond the money and look at
- 50:11Speaker 1: it like that. They can say that all they want,
- 50:14Speaker 1: but I have a feeling there's probably gonna be some
- 50:16Speaker 1: hard feelings in the locker room regardless of the situation,
- 50:19Speaker 1: simply because the number was out there and because this
- 50:23Speaker 1: guy is standing alone now transferring in because.
- 50:27Speaker 2: Of that number.
- 50:29Speaker 1: That's the difference from say, several guys who are already
- 50:32Speaker 1: on the roster and all of a sudden, hey, so
- 50:34Speaker 1: and so getting You're not quite sure maybe he did
- 50:37Speaker 1: hear a number, but these were guys that were already
- 50:39Speaker 1: on the team.
- 50:39Speaker 2: Here's a guy coming into.
- 50:41Speaker 1: The program, into the program for that kind of elevated number.
- 50:46Speaker 1: That's where I think the difference lies. And that's where
- 50:49Speaker 1: it could be the challenge.
- 50:50Speaker 3: And Craig, you wonder about what is the culture at
- 50:53Speaker 3: the team where he transferred to, if they if they
- 50:56Speaker 3: pay what he's asking right, Because I can't really see
- 51:01Speaker 3: a program like Texas or Georgia or Alabama making a
- 51:07Speaker 3: move like this, Like can you imagine Nick Saban willingly
- 51:10Speaker 3: paying a quarterback five million dollars or something like this
- 51:13Speaker 3: after the stunt that his family pulled. And again I'm
- 51:16Speaker 3: not saying it was a right or wrong decision for
- 51:18Speaker 3: im Aliava and in hypol just felt like he had
- 51:21Speaker 3: to make a move at a certain point. But I
- 51:24Speaker 3: do question what the culture will be like at the
- 51:27Speaker 3: program that he does decide to end up if it
- 51:29Speaker 3: actually is the four or five million dollar price tech.
- 51:31Speaker 1: You know, baseball players will say and I've heard you
- 51:34Speaker 1: know the guy who you're going to be working with
- 51:35Speaker 1: me on the on the broadcast, I Keith Morland say it.
- 51:38Speaker 1: You know a lot of baseball players, they don't begrudge
- 51:42Speaker 1: guys getting what they can get through free agency or whatever.
- 51:45Speaker 1: You get what you can get, you know that that
- 51:48Speaker 1: sort of thing. So there's that, and like you say,
- 51:54Speaker 1: there's each student athlete's kind of got to figure out
- 51:59Speaker 1: what makes the most financial sense to him. That the
- 52:03Speaker 1: problem other the other problem that comes out of this
- 52:05Speaker 1: CAM is that you have the specter, the specter of
- 52:11Speaker 1: the greedy parent or the greedy uncle or that sort
- 52:13Speaker 1: of thing. Whereas the student athlete might not be expecting
- 52:17Speaker 1: that much money or whatever, but there's family members wanting more,
- 52:20Speaker 1: asking for more, demanding more. Whether that's true or not,
- 52:25Speaker 1: and probably in a lot of cases it's not true.
- 52:27Speaker 1: But because of the times that it has been true,
- 52:30Speaker 1: that we've heard about it, it casts that shadow over
- 52:35Speaker 1: a situation like this, So it's it's gonna be really
- 52:39Speaker 1: interesting to see how this thing turns out and how
- 52:42Speaker 1: it rolls out for him and his future teammates as well.
- 52:45Speaker 1: All right, coming up next, I just just a few
- 52:49Speaker 1: minutes ago, I had a visit with Jim Slostangle. You'll
- 52:52Speaker 1: hear that conversation coming up Texas against U t Rio
- 52:55Speaker 1: Grand Valley tonight. And again, I promise I've got some
- 52:59Speaker 1: unique note about this coming up. We'll get to that
- 53:01Speaker 1: when we continue. I'm thirteen under the zone at UFCU
- 53:04Speaker 1: Dish falk Field, Texas and ut Rio Grand Valley to play.
- 53:09Speaker 1: All right, here's a couple of notes, and then we're
- 53:10Speaker 1: gonna hear some words from head coach of Slasnickele Texas
- 53:16Speaker 1: and ut rchiv Our meeting for the sixty second time
- 53:23Speaker 1: Texas has won fifty four of the prior sixty one.
- 53:29Speaker 1: Here's the wrinkles about that. Some of you may remember
- 53:34Speaker 1: that ut Rio Grand Valley won last year's game seventeen
- 53:39Speaker 1: to nine.
- 53:39Speaker 2: Do you remember much about that game? Cam a little bit.
- 53:43Speaker 3: I still have a friend that plays for UTRGV, so
- 53:47Speaker 3: he did not play in that game last year year's
- 53:49Speaker 3: recovering from achilles injury. But the last couple ones have
- 53:55Speaker 3: been high octane offensive power games if I remember correctly.
- 53:59Speaker 1: Yeah, and then last year, of course UTRGV won seventeen nine.
- 54:05Speaker 1: That was the game where David Pierce had Jared Thomas
- 54:09Speaker 1: start the game, went to the mound.
- 54:12Speaker 2: Yeah, he was the starting pitcher and.
- 54:13Speaker 1: Went one inning and gave up a home run and
- 54:16Speaker 1: all that kind of stuff. But that was also the
- 54:19Speaker 1: game where I think Texas hit ten batters and walked
- 54:23Speaker 1: nine something like that. They had, you know, they had
- 54:26Speaker 1: a bunch of younger guys go to the mount.
- 54:29Speaker 2: It did not go well and they lost.
- 54:30Speaker 1: But here's here's why.
- 54:32Speaker 2: I bring this up.
- 54:34Speaker 1: It was the first time that UTRGV had beaten Texas
- 54:43Speaker 1: in baseball since the regionals or what was then called
- 54:49Speaker 1: the district Championship what would now be known as a
- 54:51Speaker 1: regional in college baseball. They snapped a forty eight game
- 54:57Speaker 1: losing streak to Texas, beating them for the first time
- 55:02Speaker 1: since nineteen seventy one. That in nineteen seventy one, the
- 55:09Speaker 1: two teams played in what was called NCA District play
- 55:14Speaker 1: would now be known basically as a regional, And but
- 55:18Speaker 1: you had a field, a smaller field, and the winner
- 55:21Speaker 1: would go to the College World Series in Omaha, and
- 55:24Speaker 1: Texas went in there with future Major leaguers Burt Hooton
- 55:30Speaker 1: and Mike Beard, and Texas lost Game one one to nothing,
- 55:35Speaker 1: and they lost Game two four to nothing, and was
- 55:38Speaker 1: played at Old VJ. Key Field in San Antonio, which
- 55:42Speaker 1: is right by the campus SAT. Saint Mary's University. And
- 55:47Speaker 1: so it was, and in fact it was utrgvs second
- 55:53Speaker 1: ever true road win against Texas and their first since
- 55:58Speaker 1: May thirtieth, nine teen sixty eight, when Texas was playing
- 56:02Speaker 1: at Old Clark Field, and then they had lost forty
- 56:07Speaker 1: four straight true road games against Texas, including the first
- 56:10Speaker 1: thirty nine played at.
- 56:11Speaker 2: Ufc U Diish falk Field. So it was some history.
- 56:16Speaker 1: Ut Rio Grand Valley, which back then was known as
- 56:20Speaker 1: Pan American University and then later they were ut pan
- 56:25Speaker 1: America and now UTRGV, but they were known as Pan
- 56:28Speaker 1: American University back then, and they had a legendary coach
- 56:33Speaker 1: in Al Logo Tree, and they had teams that every
- 56:38Speaker 1: year were battling against Texas and other schools for the
- 56:42Speaker 1: opportunity to go to the College World Series. And that
- 56:44Speaker 1: particular year nineteen seventy one, pan AM was able to
- 56:49Speaker 1: break through and they won two great pitching duels one
- 56:54Speaker 1: nothing and four nothing to go to the College World Series.
- 56:57Speaker 1: And the Bronx of pan AM went on and finished
- 57:02Speaker 1: third at the College World Series in Omaha that year
- 57:06Speaker 1: nineteen seventy one.
- 57:07Speaker 2: It kept Texas from going.
- 57:09Speaker 1: Cliff Gustafson was in his third season or fourth season
- 57:13Speaker 1: at Texas and it kept Texas from being able to
- 57:17Speaker 1: go to the College World Series as what was then
- 57:20Speaker 1: known as Pan American University now UTRGV beat Texas in
- 57:26Speaker 1: two pitchers duels in San Antonio in NCAA District played
- 57:30Speaker 1: to go to the College World Series.
- 57:31Speaker 2: Okay, that's one note. Here's the other note.
- 57:36Speaker 1: Your friend Cameron that was on the roster last year,
- 57:38Speaker 1: is he playing this year for UTRGV.
- 57:40Speaker 3: Yes, Jacob Sanchez, and I believe he's second or third
- 57:43Speaker 3: in the team in batting average.
- 57:45Speaker 1: He's the first baseman. Yes, from the Rio Grand Valley's
- 57:48Speaker 1: from San Juan, Texas. I guess he went to Far
- 57:50Speaker 1: San Juan Alamo or DSJ Norton. Yeah, okay, he's list
- 57:53Speaker 1: as a grad student.
- 57:54Speaker 2: Now.
- 57:55Speaker 1: Yeah, he's batting three sixty eight with seven homers and
- 57:57Speaker 1: twenty three runs.
- 57:58Speaker 2: Back in him where you get to meet him?
- 58:00Speaker 3: We spent a summer in South Dakota together in the
- 58:04Speaker 3: intercollegiate baseball team, the Spiritfit Sasquatch. Me and him were
- 58:08Speaker 3: up there for the summer, so.
- 58:09Speaker 1: Okay, and he was he was playing, Yes, okay, all right,
- 58:13Speaker 1: all right, So yes, he'll be their starting first baseman tonight.
- 58:18Speaker 1: Have you heard the story about who the starter and left.
- 58:20Speaker 2: Field is for utr GV. I have not. His name
- 58:26Speaker 2: is Renee Galvan. Uh And if you ask.
- 58:33Speaker 1: Is he related to the log Worns catcher Ryland Galvan,
- 58:37Speaker 1: you couldn't be any more related than those two guys are.
- 58:41Speaker 2: They're twin brothers.
- 58:44Speaker 1: So Rylan Galvan and Renee Galvan will be going up
- 58:49Speaker 1: against one another tonight. Additionally, as we know, Jacque Stewart
- 58:54Speaker 1: of course played at sent in the log with the
- 58:58Speaker 1: Galvan twin brothers. And also UTRGV has a pitcher named
- 59:06Speaker 1: Wyatt Whyatric, who's from Sinton. He's five and zero on
- 59:11Speaker 1: a three point nine era. He's one of their weekend starters,
- 59:15Speaker 1: Wyatt Whyatric. All four of those guys played for Cinton,
- 59:20Speaker 1: all four of them did.
- 59:22Speaker 4: All four of.
- 59:23Speaker 1: Them played for, of course, the lifetime Longhorn Adrian Alenes,
- 59:26Speaker 1: who's the head coach at Sinton, and Adrian was a
- 59:31Speaker 1: freshman and an All American as a pitcher on the
- 59:35Speaker 1: two thousand and five.
- 59:36Speaker 2: National championship team. All four of those.
- 59:39Speaker 1: Guys played for Adrian Allenes and won the state championship
- 59:42Speaker 1: in baseball UIL four, a state championship right here at
- 59:46Speaker 1: UFCU desh Frog Field back in twenty twenty two, three
- 59:50Speaker 1: years ago. So you've got four former Senton pirates who
- 59:55Speaker 1: will be on the field tonight going against one of
- 59:58Speaker 1: the including twin brothers, Ryland Galvan against Renee Galvin.
- 1:00:03Speaker 3: And they're identical twins too, correct, They look exactly alike.
- 1:00:08Speaker 1: Yeah, So I just saw Ryland down in the Dugoutlan
- 1:00:11Speaker 1: is visiting with coach Lasnagel, and I asked him. I said,
- 1:00:16Speaker 1: I said, fact or fiction. You had to come up
- 1:00:19Speaker 1: with somewhere between forty and fifty tickets.
- 1:00:21Speaker 2: He goes, oh, it's fact.
- 1:00:22Speaker 1: He said, I had to come up with thirty by
- 1:00:25Speaker 1: myself and then Renee and other family that they will
- 1:00:29Speaker 1: have somewhere close to fifty. Wow, family and friends. Just
- 1:00:34Speaker 1: for those two guys, to say nothing of the other people. Yeah,
- 1:00:38Speaker 1: so there'll be somewhere between forty and fifty family and
- 1:00:41Speaker 1: friends members of the Galvans watching tonight's ball game. So
- 1:00:44Speaker 1: that's a really cool deal. It's part of what I
- 1:00:46Speaker 1: asked Jim Slasnago. But here's the conversation a few moments
- 1:00:49Speaker 1: ago with the long words head coach. Nice to be
- 1:00:51Speaker 1: in warm weather.
- 1:00:51Speaker 5: Yeah, it feels good. It feels good to be a dishfalk.
- 1:00:53Speaker 5: Feels good to be in warm weather, feels good to
- 1:00:55Speaker 5: be in Austin, Texas.
- 1:00:56Speaker 1: You mentioned to Keith on the post game show the
- 1:00:58Speaker 1: other day, and I chuckled about it because you said
- 1:01:01Speaker 1: to him, you and I are probably the only people
- 1:01:03Speaker 1: who remember the show. Mash. I remember very very well.
- 1:01:06Speaker 2: But I know you must feel.
- 1:01:07Speaker 1: A little bit like your Your group resembles a bit
- 1:01:10Speaker 1: of a mash unit.
- 1:01:11Speaker 5: Yeah it is, and everybody deals with something, you know,
- 1:01:13Speaker 5: throughout the course of the season. It's just you know,
- 1:01:17Speaker 5: we we we have a kind of our The best
- 1:01:21Speaker 5: players on our team are significantly ahead of the other guys.
- 1:01:24Speaker 5: And and you know, I think any good team needs
- 1:01:26Speaker 5: their best players to stay healthy and have good seasons,
- 1:01:29Speaker 5: and we certainly need that. So super proud of the
- 1:01:32Speaker 5: way guys have competed, you know, without aging at full speed,
- 1:01:35Speaker 5: without max at all, a couple of pitchers, but uh yeah,
- 1:01:39Speaker 5: we'll just keep taking hits.
- 1:01:41Speaker 1: But win anyway, right, Like.
- 1:01:43Speaker 5: I think we talked about I don't know if you
- 1:01:45Speaker 5: and I talked about it or not, but you can
- 1:01:46Speaker 5: use the words win win anyway where you can win
- 1:01:49Speaker 5: any way, right, And.
- 1:01:51Speaker 1: So there's a lot of different ways to win a game.
- 1:01:52Speaker 5: And so luckily, at least at the moment, our pitching
- 1:01:55Speaker 5: has been pretty solid. It just makes the games a
- 1:01:58Speaker 5: lot closer, which are every every decision gets magnified.
- 1:02:02Speaker 2: And as the head coach, you.
- 1:02:03Speaker 5: Know, you're you, you want to try to make the
- 1:02:05Speaker 5: best decisions you can.
- 1:02:06Speaker 1: We often talk about that whole next man up mentality thing.
- 1:02:10Speaker 1: It really gets put to the test on a deal
- 1:02:12Speaker 1: like this. But but you've rotated enough guys and even
- 1:02:15Speaker 1: when you had a largely healthy flight up to get
- 1:02:18Speaker 1: guys comfortable when their time was coming.
- 1:02:20Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:02:20Speaker 5: There, I mean, there aren't too many guys that whether
- 1:02:23Speaker 5: it be Stewart or Chamberlain or Duplantier or uh you know,
- 1:02:29Speaker 5: Matt Scott hasn't had a ton ofment beats. But there's
- 1:02:31Speaker 5: no three or four guys Winfield, three or four guys
- 1:02:33Speaker 5: that have had They've played enough, and they've played against
- 1:02:35Speaker 5: the good teams too. It's not just playing against a
- 1:02:38Speaker 5: bad pitcher or something like that.
- 1:02:39Speaker 4: You know.
- 1:02:39Speaker 5: Even the Tuesday games against UTSA, you're in Texas State,
- 1:02:42Speaker 5: you're seeing a lot of times their weekend arm especially
- 1:02:45Speaker 5: late in the game, and we could see the same
- 1:02:47Speaker 5: thing tonight. So uh so yeah, I mean they're they're prepared.
- 1:02:50Speaker 5: It's just uh, you know, this is this is a
- 1:02:52Speaker 5: tough league to to uh to be kind of figuring
- 1:02:55Speaker 5: it out in do you get a.
- 1:02:57Speaker 1: Kick out of a situation like tonight where you Island's
- 1:03:00Speaker 1: twin brothers playing and there's forty fifty family members coming
- 1:03:04Speaker 1: and stuff like those type of unique situations that can
- 1:03:06Speaker 1: happen occasionally.
- 1:03:07Speaker 5: Yeah, as long as we're winning, Yeah, it's fun to
- 1:03:09Speaker 5: smile and giggle and enjoy it winning. But now I mean, yeah,
- 1:03:12Speaker 5: I enjoy it and did the head coach over there,
- 1:03:15Speaker 5: Derek matt Locke's very special to me as an assistant coach
- 1:03:18Speaker 5: with me at TCU for a couple of years and
- 1:03:20Speaker 5: has bounced a round. Was a multi state champion high
- 1:03:23Speaker 5: school coach at Flower Mound and then has done do
- 1:03:25Speaker 5: an awesome job as an assistant coach at West Virginia
- 1:03:29Speaker 5: and then has just done amazing things at U TRGV
- 1:03:32Speaker 5: and their games are awesome as you. But you've been
- 1:03:34Speaker 5: down there the crowds and really have good energy, and
- 1:03:38Speaker 5: we've got a regional club.
- 1:03:39Speaker 1: So this is just a big night for both teams.
- 1:03:40Speaker 1: Final thing here, How about your pitching plan? What you
- 1:03:42Speaker 1: want to do at tonight? How many guys do you
- 1:03:44Speaker 1: want to see? Depending on how the game.
- 1:03:45Speaker 5: Unfolds, Well, obviously if being he can have a good night,
- 1:03:48Speaker 5: well let him keep going. I mean, especially with a
- 1:03:50Speaker 5: short week, I think any any out that somebody can
- 1:03:54Speaker 5: get that isn't maybe going to pitch this weekend would
- 1:03:56Speaker 5: be great, but I'd love to stay away from Atlantis
- 1:04:00Speaker 5: at all. Easier said than done, and given our offensive situation,
- 1:04:05Speaker 5: but yeah, I probably would avoid that at all costs.
- 1:04:08Speaker 5: But everybody else, even even maybe Sonya could come right back.
- 1:04:12Speaker 5: But Moffitt, Jason Floores, you know, there's some other guys
- 1:04:16Speaker 5: down there we'd like to see pitch.
- 1:04:17Speaker 2: But got to win the game. Yeah, and it's simplest measure.
- 1:04:21Speaker 2: Got to win the game.
- 1:04:22Speaker 1: All right. We'll be back to wrap up hour number
- 1:04:24Speaker 1: two on thirteen under the Zone. Third and final hour
- 1:04:27Speaker 1: of the program here from UFCU Dish falk Field here
- 1:04:31Speaker 1: on thirteen under the Zone. Craig Way with you keep
- 1:04:34Speaker 1: more a little joining me for the call tonight of
- 1:04:37Speaker 1: the game, which we'll have Texas playing its first game
- 1:04:43Speaker 1: as the number one ranked team in the nation in
- 1:04:48Speaker 1: three years twenty twenty two. At one point in Texas
- 1:04:50Speaker 1: was number one in the country and they did go
- 1:04:53Speaker 1: to Omaha that year.
- 1:04:54Speaker 2: But they'll be the number one.
- 1:04:57Speaker 1: Ranking team in the country and they take the field
- 1:04:59Speaker 1: tonight against the ca Rors the Carows of the University
- 1:05:03Speaker 1: of Texas Rio Grand Valley u t RGV Okay quick
- 1:05:10Speaker 1: trivia question for you there Cameron Parker, Okay, can you
- 1:05:14Speaker 1: tell me where the campus of.
- 1:05:15Speaker 2: UTRGV is located.
- 1:05:18Speaker 1: Edinburgh Burgh Nice, Edinsburgh, Edinburgh unlike it's spelled like Edinburgh, Scotland,
- 1:05:26Speaker 1: but without the age a little different, right, yeah, and
- 1:05:29Speaker 1: it lit'tle just plain old Edinburgh, but it's kind of
- 1:05:31Speaker 1: right in the heart of the Rio Grand Valley region
- 1:05:35Speaker 1: of the state of Texas. And and that's that's that's
- 1:05:40Speaker 1: where it's located.
- 1:05:41Speaker 2: That's where their ball club. In last hour we.
- 1:05:43Speaker 1: Played the conversation, just had a little bit ago with
- 1:05:48Speaker 1: Jim Schlasnag and he was talking about Derek Mattlock and
- 1:05:51Speaker 1: what a job he's done at UTRGV. And he said,
- 1:05:53Speaker 1: the atmosphere down here, because you know you've been there.
- 1:05:56Speaker 1: I will never forget going down there. I guess it
- 1:05:59Speaker 1: was twenty twenty one going down there, Keith Morland and
- 1:06:02Speaker 1: I did. And it was the first time Texas had
- 1:06:07Speaker 1: ever played there. And you know they have ballpark seats.
- 1:06:13Speaker 1: I think the number was like fifty four hundred, but
- 1:06:16Speaker 1: they had well over seven thousand fans. I mean it
- 1:06:19Speaker 1: was jammed down the foul lines and they'd had rain
- 1:06:23Speaker 1: all day, but they brought in helicopters to drive the field.
- 1:06:27Speaker 2: They wanted to.
- 1:06:27Speaker 1: Make sure that that that field was playable, and it
- 1:06:33Speaker 1: was in Texas ended up winning that ball game that night.
- 1:06:36Speaker 2: It was a lot of fun down there.
- 1:06:38Speaker 1: They were actually the ball club was actually hosted by
- 1:06:41Speaker 1: a Board of Regents member or a former Board of
- 1:06:44Speaker 1: Regents member for lunch there. So it was a really
- 1:06:48Speaker 1: cool deal. And they played UTRGV every other time here
- 1:06:53Speaker 1: except in San Antonio and NCAA tournament plays.
- 1:06:55Speaker 2: We pointed out.
- 1:06:56Speaker 1: Last hour, Okay, we opened the show Cameron talking about
- 1:07:02Speaker 1: this not clandestine but because people knew about it, but
- 1:07:06Speaker 1: closed door meeting with some select members of the media
- 1:07:12Speaker 1: and Dallas Maverage general manager Nico Harrison, along with the
- 1:07:18Speaker 1: new CEO, Rick Welts. So it was an hour long
- 1:07:21Speaker 1: session today, as they said, with a select group of
- 1:07:24Speaker 1: Dallas based media and was they'd only had one other
- 1:07:28Speaker 1: He'd only had one other time to visit, and that
- 1:07:31Speaker 1: was a brief pregame session in Cleveland the day after
- 1:07:36Speaker 1: the Lukadanchich trade.
- 1:07:38Speaker 2: But of course, with.
- 1:07:39Speaker 1: Everything being so inflamed and fans angry, he did he
- 1:07:44Speaker 1: did a meeting, but they allowed no cameras, no recording
- 1:07:48Speaker 1: devices of any kind in the deal. Now, Tim McMahon
- 1:07:53Speaker 1: was one of those select media there and he's got quotes.
- 1:07:59Speaker 2: Now.
- 1:08:00Speaker 1: I guess maybe he just wrote very fast or whatever.
- 1:08:03Speaker 1: But so there's one quote from Nico Harrison where he said,
- 1:08:07Speaker 1: there's no regrets on the trade. Part of my job
- 1:08:11Speaker 1: is to do the best thing for the maverage, not
- 1:08:12Speaker 1: only today but also in the future. And some of
- 1:08:15Speaker 1: the decisions I'm wanting to make are going to be unpopular.
- 1:08:17Speaker 1: That's my job and I have to stand by it.
- 1:08:20Speaker 2: Okay. So then I listen.
- 1:08:23Speaker 1: Whichever media member asked this question, and I don't know
- 1:08:27Speaker 1: who it was, and it didn't say, but whoever asked him,
- 1:08:31Speaker 1: what do you think about all the chance of fire
- 1:08:34Speaker 1: Nico and everybody on social media screaming fire Nico and
- 1:08:38Speaker 1: that you need to be fired. What do you think
- 1:08:39Speaker 1: about that? Hey, listen, I slute you for asking the question.
- 1:08:44Speaker 1: His answer was, well, the beauty of Dallas is it's
- 1:08:48Speaker 1: a passionate fan base. For us to reach our goals,
- 1:08:51Speaker 1: we need that fan base. And to be honest with you,
- 1:08:54Speaker 1: every trade I've made since I've been here has not
- 1:08:56Speaker 1: been regarded as a good trade, and sometimes it takes
- 1:08:58Speaker 1: time traded for Kyrie Irving, it was meant with a
- 1:09:02Speaker 1: lot of skepticism.
- 1:09:03Speaker 2: It was great.
- 1:09:04Speaker 1: It as a terrible trade, and you didn't see it
- 1:09:06Speaker 1: right away, but eventually everyone agreed that it was a
- 1:09:07Speaker 1: great trade. When I traded for Gafford, Daniel Geffert and Washington,
- 1:09:12Speaker 1: the MPG, it was like, oh, we gave up too much.
- 1:09:14Speaker 1: These guys aren't going to help us now. That trade.
- 1:09:17Speaker 1: You saw the evidence a lot sooner. So I think
- 1:09:19Speaker 1: a lot of times trades take a little bit of time.
- 1:09:22Speaker 1: But our philosophy, like I said, going forward as defense
- 1:09:26Speaker 1: wins championships and were built on defense, and this trade
- 1:09:29Speaker 1: cements us for that. So he was also asked did
- 1:09:35Speaker 1: he not believe that the core of this team that
- 1:09:37Speaker 1: got to the finals last year with Luca as the centerpiece,
- 1:09:40Speaker 1: could contend for a title, And he just doubled down
- 1:09:44Speaker 1: and said, I'll.
- 1:09:44Speaker 2: Say this again, defense wins championships.
- 1:09:48Speaker 1: Well, they had the number one ranked defense for the
- 1:09:50Speaker 1: last twenty games of last season, and the problem that
- 1:09:54Speaker 1: Tim McMahon pointed out when the Celtics beat the Mavericks
- 1:09:56Speaker 1: in five games in the finals, defense was not the issue.
- 1:10:00Speaker 1: They allowed one hundred and nine points per one hundred
- 1:10:02Speaker 1: possessions in the finals. That's a defensive rating that would
- 1:10:06Speaker 1: have ranked second in the league last regular season. They
- 1:10:09Speaker 1: couldn't score enough enough, so and he also said, we
- 1:10:13Speaker 1: believe in the move we made. Asked about the logic
- 1:10:16Speaker 1: of a time frame that ends with the team entering
- 1:10:19Speaker 1: a stretch when it doesn't control its first round draft picks.
- 1:10:22Speaker 1: Is that in the team's best interest? He said, you
- 1:10:24Speaker 1: obviously don't. That's fine. You're entitled to your opinions. But
- 1:10:26Speaker 1: we're excited. I think once we win, that will change
- 1:10:29Speaker 1: your mind. And then they asked him, do you see
- 1:10:33Speaker 1: yourself continuing as the Mavericks general manager beyond the timeframe
- 1:10:37Speaker 1: of three to four years? He said, I have three
- 1:10:38Speaker 1: years left on my contract. I see myself finishing it out.
- 1:10:45Speaker 3: So it makes a lot to dissect from that, Craig,
- 1:10:49Speaker 3: the whole win now thing for the Mavericks. Yeah, Kyrie
- 1:10:53Speaker 3: Irving's out for next season, Craig, after suffering was it
- 1:10:56Speaker 3: the achilles? Yep, tearing his achilles. He's done for now season,
- 1:11:01Speaker 3: and I would think the Mavericks window for next season
- 1:11:04Speaker 3: is also done. Now you're looking at Kyrie Irving, who's
- 1:11:06Speaker 3: going to be on the wrong side of thirty coming
- 1:11:09Speaker 3: off a major, major injury. You have Anthony Davis, who's
- 1:11:13Speaker 3: also on the wrong side of thirty, who's had his
- 1:11:15Speaker 3: own health concerns. I mean, shoot, his first game of
- 1:11:18Speaker 3: the Mavericks uniform, he only played one half of basketball
- 1:11:21Speaker 3: because he got hurt, and then.
- 1:11:22Speaker 2: He was out for two or three weeks.
- 1:11:23Speaker 3: So the whole defense wins championships. You know we're trying
- 1:11:28Speaker 3: to win now. I just absolutely just do not buy
- 1:11:33Speaker 3: it at all. And if you really wanted to win,
- 1:11:37Speaker 3: I mean, the whole point of winning a championship, you
- 1:11:39Speaker 3: want to have a top five player in the league,
- 1:11:42Speaker 3: and they had that with Luka Dantis. You already talked
- 1:11:44Speaker 3: with the stat about them having the best defense. Yeah,
- 1:11:46Speaker 3: down the stretch. I mean again again, before the trade, Craig,
- 1:11:50Speaker 3: I thought this team could be healthy. I would think
- 1:11:53Speaker 3: they would probably be the biggest threat in the Western
- 1:11:55Speaker 3: Conference right now if you go back and if you now,
- 1:11:58Speaker 3: of course it's hypothetical. You know, maybe Kyrie ends up,
- 1:12:01Speaker 3: you know, tearing his achilles anyways, but you know, if
- 1:12:04Speaker 3: you have look on the Mavericks, obviously Lakers may not
- 1:12:06Speaker 3: even be a playoff team, the Rockets, you know, Nuggets, Clippers.
- 1:12:11Speaker 3: I would think the Mavericks are once again, you know,
- 1:12:13Speaker 3: the biggest threat to the Thunder, and remember they beat
- 1:12:15Speaker 3: the Thunder last season. So yep, there's nothing that Nikov
- 1:12:19Speaker 3: said here that would make me, as a Mavericks fan
- 1:12:22Speaker 3: feel better.
- 1:12:22Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah, I just think I just see him doubling
- 1:12:25Speaker 1: down on everything and that's not gonna sit well with
- 1:12:27Speaker 1: Mavericks fans. All right, up next, we'll talk college baseball.
- 1:12:31Speaker 1: Ty Harrington in the house. He'll join us next here
- 1:12:34Speaker 1: as we continue from UFCU Dish fark Field.
- 1:12:36Speaker 2: I'm thirteen under the zone because it's time for.
- 1:12:38Speaker 1: Our weekly second on college baseball with Hy Harrington, of course,
- 1:12:41Speaker 1: the lifetime Longhorn, former long worn player and assistant coach
- 1:12:45Speaker 1: in twenty years they head coach at Texas State. Which
- 1:12:47Speaker 1: George strait tune is that one?
- 1:12:49Speaker 4: I don't know, but I always let that part. I
- 1:12:51Speaker 4: don't know the name.
- 1:12:51Speaker 6: You always quiz me on the names of the songs
- 1:12:53Speaker 6: and a big dam but I don't know the names
- 1:12:56Speaker 6: of all the songs. I would tell you. I love
- 1:12:58Speaker 6: the way he says.
- 1:12:59Speaker 1: Unlearned, you have to learn and learn, And I'm like, yeah,
- 1:13:03Speaker 1: you know who else says you learn Yoda in the
- 1:13:06Speaker 1: Star Wars song. You must have learned that which you
- 1:13:09Speaker 1: have learned?
- 1:13:10Speaker 4: Yeah, you have to learn.
- 1:13:11Speaker 2: You have to learn and.
- 1:13:12Speaker 4: Learn about fifty top or number one hits.
- 1:13:15Speaker 1: That's right, So learn us cam which number one was
- 1:13:18Speaker 1: this one?
- 1:13:19Speaker 2: A fire? You can't put out fire?
- 1:13:21Speaker 4: Can't? Yeah? You know what, I'd be better.
- 1:13:23Speaker 6: I would have a better chance if you play the
- 1:13:25Speaker 6: music and let me sing along with him.
- 1:13:27Speaker 4: Next time, you.
- 1:13:28Speaker 6: Can do I can do that, okay, but I couldn't
- 1:13:30Speaker 6: name I probably still couldn't tell you the name of
- 1:13:32Speaker 6: the song, but I could sing.
- 1:13:33Speaker 1: Along with Okay. All right, So next Tuesday when we're here, before.
- 1:13:40Speaker 4: There, we're in San Marcus.
- 1:13:42Speaker 1: Oh, that's right.
- 1:13:43Speaker 2: What we can do it in San Marcus?
- 1:13:45Speaker 4: Fitting, Yeah, bitch s George straight.
- 1:13:47Speaker 1: Right, So we'll be down in lovely Hayes County at
- 1:13:50Speaker 1: Bob Capball Park.
- 1:13:51Speaker 2: By the way, are we going to get to be
- 1:13:53Speaker 2: in a booth?
- 1:13:53Speaker 4: You think so?
- 1:13:54Speaker 1: Yeah, because I know earlier the season was down there
- 1:13:57Speaker 1: and they were inside of that they didn't.
- 1:13:58Speaker 2: Have to be outside in the window. And also that's
- 1:14:01Speaker 2: all right.
- 1:14:01Speaker 1: So next Tuesday, when we're a Bob Cat ballpark. And
- 1:14:05Speaker 1: you know, after I go down, what's what's the great
- 1:14:09Speaker 1: place text Max Town by the River.
- 1:14:11Speaker 2: Let's say the Herbert Herbert's.
- 1:14:14Speaker 4: Yeah, indeed, that was George's spot too, was it real?
- 1:14:18Speaker 2: Indeed?
- 1:14:18Speaker 6: Oh yeah, oh no, the original the guy that owned it,
- 1:14:22Speaker 6: who's long passed away. But George would come in there
- 1:14:25Speaker 6: and he had his own table and ate there.
- 1:14:28Speaker 4: And when you go in there, you'll see a handful
- 1:14:30Speaker 4: of photos of him.
- 1:14:31Speaker 1: It was the great Jeff Howe who told me about
- 1:14:33Speaker 1: Herbert's initially. So then I went and when my daughter
- 1:14:37Speaker 1: was Strutter senior captain there, I took her there from
- 1:14:40Speaker 1: once we went there one day.
- 1:14:41Speaker 2: She had never been, you know, college students.
- 1:14:43Speaker 4: What did they do right?
- 1:14:44Speaker 1: But she went and she really enjoys it. So anyway,
- 1:14:47Speaker 1: next Tuesday we'll go down there. I will have Cam
- 1:14:51Speaker 1: bump back in the four o'clock hour when we do
- 1:14:54Speaker 1: our segment, and I will and he'll it'll be a
- 1:14:58Speaker 1: George Strait song and Cam, don't don't pick you know
- 1:15:03Speaker 1: I'm gonna love you forever and ever. Amen, don't don't
- 1:15:06Speaker 1: pick one of the most popular one. Pick a number one.
- 1:15:08Speaker 1: It can be a number one one. Since he is
- 1:15:11Speaker 1: the catalog. That's all we ever bumped off with anyway,
- 1:15:13Speaker 1: Just make it a little more obscure camp so that
- 1:15:16Speaker 1: we can get tied to sing along with it and
- 1:15:19Speaker 1: play name that shit. Okay, all right, we'll do that
- 1:15:21Speaker 1: next Tuesday.
- 1:15:23Speaker 4: Oh my god. All right.
- 1:15:24Speaker 1: Meantime, he can name the number one baseball team in
- 1:15:26Speaker 1: the country right now. And it's kind of a it's
- 1:15:31Speaker 1: kind of a weird dynamic because yes, by process of elimination,
- 1:15:36Speaker 1: I mean Georgia's been number one, Tennis he's been number one,
- 1:15:38Speaker 1: Arkansas has been number one, LSU's been number one. Texas
- 1:15:42Speaker 1: becomes the fifth SEC team to be number one in
- 1:15:45Speaker 1: the country. And so it depends on which side of
- 1:15:47Speaker 1: the fence you're looking at. There's some on social media
- 1:15:50Speaker 1: and say, wow, the SEC isn't all that look at this,
- 1:15:52Speaker 1: or just beating up on one of the other side
- 1:15:53Speaker 1: is now, that's why they're that good and they're knocking
- 1:15:57Speaker 1: one another off. And at this point, because are cresting
- 1:16:01Speaker 1: the halfway point of conference play now at thirteen and two,
- 1:16:06Speaker 1: and folks can say what they want about, well, their
- 1:16:08Speaker 1: their most difficult series have been at home, and that'll
- 1:16:10Speaker 1: include Auburn. This week, and then they have A and
- 1:16:12Speaker 1: M and they still have to go to Fayetteville though
- 1:16:14Speaker 1: to play Arkansas. But they've beaten LSU at home, and
- 1:16:17Speaker 1: they beat Georgia at home. Still, it comes down to
- 1:16:21Speaker 1: winning series, and they haven't dropped a series, to see,
- 1:16:23Speaker 1: And that's how you win a conference champions one.
- 1:16:25Speaker 4: Hundred percent, that's how you do it.
- 1:16:26Speaker 6: But I would ask you, because you watch more sports
- 1:16:29Speaker 6: than anybody I know, and you are glued in and
- 1:16:33Speaker 6: informed by sports, is there a more fluid top twenty
- 1:16:39Speaker 6: in any than any other supports in college baseball that
- 1:16:42Speaker 6: changes more than baseball, don't No?
- 1:16:44Speaker 2: Right?
- 1:16:44Speaker 4: That's fair? Right?
- 1:16:45Speaker 1: And and football had some fluidity, and basketball had some fluiditis,
- 1:16:49Speaker 1: but not like this, right, not like that. Not only
- 1:16:52Speaker 1: the teams that are number one, but the ones below them.
- 1:16:55Speaker 1: You can go from being unranked to tenth in two poles, yep.
- 1:17:00Speaker 1: You can go from being fourth out of the poland
- 1:17:02Speaker 1: two weeks.
- 1:17:04Speaker 2: It's been. It's been.
- 1:17:06Speaker 1: Florida was the top ten team when the season started,
- 1:17:08Speaker 1: and they needed the Sweet Missouri last week just to
- 1:17:10Speaker 1: get the four and eleven in conference play. That's life
- 1:17:14Speaker 1: in the SEC. Somebody asked me today about you know
- 1:17:20Speaker 1: how different life was in this SEC. And I said,
- 1:17:23Speaker 1: it's a grind and it's really high intensity no matter
- 1:17:26Speaker 1: where you're playing and who you're playing. I'm telling you,
- 1:17:29Speaker 1: I'm here to tell you Kentucky is six and nine
- 1:17:31Speaker 1: in the league. But tough to play that ball club
- 1:17:34Speaker 1: in that ballpark in those conditions, especially on Friday, and
- 1:17:38Speaker 1: everybody's got their own set of irascible fans and all
- 1:17:43Speaker 1: that kind of stuff that they can make it make
- 1:17:45Speaker 1: it very very difficult on you. And I said that.
- 1:17:50Speaker 1: They said, well, what's the difference between that and the
- 1:17:51Speaker 1: Big Twelve? And I said, I'll tell you the difference.
- 1:17:54Speaker 1: There were weekends. And this is kind of a corollary
- 1:17:57Speaker 1: to what I heard Sark talk about football, that you
- 1:18:01Speaker 1: could play at a Big twelve stadium with a football
- 1:18:05Speaker 1: team and catch a team on the down week or
- 1:18:08Speaker 1: not that good or whether and you might not even
- 1:18:10Speaker 1: be playing your best, but you can still get out
- 1:18:12Speaker 1: of there with with win. And you really can't do
- 1:18:14Speaker 1: that in the SEC. Texas did not play poorly against Vanderbilt,
- 1:18:18Speaker 1: but Vanderbilt played really well and Texas really had to
- 1:18:22Speaker 1: make some plays there in the fourth quarter to hold
- 1:18:24Speaker 1: on and win that game.
- 1:18:26Speaker 2: That's life in this league. And so I said, so the.
- 1:18:28Speaker 1: Difference is to me, the intensity and the enmity that
- 1:18:34Speaker 1: comes from opposing fan bases.
- 1:18:36Speaker 2: That's where it's different.
- 1:18:38Speaker 1: And I said, you know, they like to say it
- 1:18:40Speaker 1: just means more, and I said, it just means more
- 1:18:43Speaker 1: to hate your neighbor, because in this league it isn't
- 1:18:47Speaker 1: just about your our trial. Everybody hates everybody in this league.
- 1:18:50Speaker 1: That's what I'm discovering when I'm going Everybody hates everybody
- 1:18:54Speaker 1: in this league.
- 1:18:55Speaker 2: And I've seen it.
- 1:18:56Speaker 1: I really saw it in basketball, and I also saw
- 1:18:58Speaker 1: it the few road environs football as well.
- 1:19:00Speaker 6: I think two in line with what you're saying, and
- 1:19:03Speaker 6: I think this goes.
- 1:19:04Speaker 4: With it when you when you open.
- 1:19:07Speaker 6: Up the schedule, right, let's let me back, let me
- 1:19:10Speaker 6: that's a better way to put it. When we get
- 1:19:12Speaker 6: to Thursday of this week, even if it's Thursday of
- 1:19:16Speaker 6: the first week in the SEC for the very first time,
- 1:19:19Speaker 6: Texas fans, and if you're an OU fan, since we're
- 1:19:23Speaker 6: the newest members, when you open up on Thursday, the
- 1:19:26Speaker 6: pay or the paper or there or I said, the
- 1:19:28Speaker 6: paper did not and you're listening to a radio show
- 1:19:30Speaker 6: or you pull up your computer and you look at
- 1:19:32Speaker 6: who's playing who, and you start to go, oh, wow,
- 1:19:37Speaker 6: so and so is playing so and so this weekend,
- 1:19:39Speaker 6: or Arkansas's playned A and M this weekend, and or
- 1:19:42Speaker 6: Texas is playing Auburn this weekend, Mississippi State planning, and
- 1:19:45Speaker 6: then all of a sudden, week two or week eight,
- 1:19:48Speaker 6: you open it back up again. You go, oh my god,
- 1:19:50Speaker 6: look at who's playing. We've got a top five and
- 1:19:53Speaker 6: you know, number five, and number two, we got number
- 1:19:55Speaker 6: one and number you know nine, we got what And
- 1:19:57Speaker 6: you start looking at that and you go, it's every weekend.
- 1:20:01Speaker 2: You just hit on it.
- 1:20:02Speaker 1: And I talked about this the last two weekends. I'm
- 1:20:05Speaker 1: gonna hit it again this weekend. Starting Thursday, Ole misses
- 1:20:10Speaker 1: at South Carolina and South Carolina struggling, then third ranked
- 1:20:13Speaker 1: Georgia at seventeenth rank Vanderbilt fifteenth ranked Alabama at number seven,
- 1:20:18Speaker 1: LSU six ranked Auburn. They're number eight and D one
- 1:20:22Speaker 1: and number six another six ranked Auburn at number one,
- 1:20:24Speaker 1: Texas A and M hottest team perhaps in the league
- 1:20:28Speaker 1: at number two, Arkansas and Oklahoma resurgent now number twelve
- 1:20:32Speaker 1: playing at Missouri, and then on Friday. The series to
- 1:20:35Speaker 1: two that are Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Kentucky at number two
- 1:20:38Speaker 1: Tennessee and then there's Florida at Mississippi State every week
- 1:20:43Speaker 1: every week.
- 1:20:44Speaker 2: That you're gonna have this.
- 1:20:45Speaker 1: So so that is something I think that teams need
- 1:20:50Speaker 1: to adjust to.
- 1:20:50Speaker 2: This team is adjusted to all of that part of it.
- 1:20:53Speaker 1: Well, the problem they have is keeping guys healthy right
- 1:20:55Speaker 1: now because Blue is out, he's banged up. They got
- 1:20:58Speaker 1: a couple of pitchers that that still are not ready
- 1:21:01Speaker 1: yet to do that. Adrian Rodriguez just coming back from
- 1:21:06Speaker 1: that edema there near the hamdmatee bone. Fortunately didn't break
- 1:21:10Speaker 1: the handmakee bone fracture that, and he's taking ground balls
- 1:21:15Speaker 1: and he's out there and I'm looking at him take
- 1:21:19Speaker 1: ground balls at second base because we don't know about
- 1:21:21Speaker 1: Ethan Mendoza tonight because he banged up his shoulder diving
- 1:21:24Speaker 1: for a ball and they got to slow play that
- 1:21:27Speaker 1: and wait and see. So overcoming the injuries I think
- 1:21:30Speaker 1: is going to be the biggest test for this team,
- 1:21:32Speaker 1: in addition to playing some really good teams.
- 1:21:34Speaker 6: Yeah, and you know, and the crazy thing about injuries,
- 1:21:36Speaker 6: it's something you cannot control, not why I say you can't.
- 1:21:39Speaker 6: There's sometimes you can maybe you know, control pieces of it,
- 1:21:42Speaker 6: but not all the time. And in sport, baseball is
- 1:21:44Speaker 6: a much more physical sports than what people give it
- 1:21:46Speaker 6: credit for. It just because we're not banging heads and
- 1:21:49Speaker 6: running into each other.
- 1:21:49Speaker 2: It takes it start, that's right.
- 1:21:51Speaker 6: And next time you get by the way, next time
- 1:21:52Speaker 6: somebody throws an object at you at ninety five miles an.
- 1:21:55Speaker 4: Hour, that's hard and it hits you.
- 1:21:56Speaker 6: You know, you can understand why, Oh my god, I
- 1:21:58Speaker 6: get why guys get hurt at once in a while
- 1:22:00Speaker 6: and their effort. Look, you know, whether you know Mendoza
- 1:22:04Speaker 6: gets to play tonight or you know, whenever it may
- 1:22:06Speaker 6: be that he comes back into it. One of the
- 1:22:07Speaker 6: hardest things about not only you know, momentarily having a
- 1:22:11Speaker 6: replacing people like he in blue and together. There's an
- 1:22:15Speaker 6: emotional piece to this that I thought, and I think
- 1:22:18Speaker 6: women does. He Every at bat for him is its
- 1:22:22Speaker 6: new life for him. I mean, he takes it so
- 1:22:24Speaker 6: personal and he I mean, and I've had hitters, and
- 1:22:28Speaker 6: we've all had players. I was guilty of this too.
- 1:22:30Speaker 6: We would throw at bats away every once in a while, right,
- 1:22:33Speaker 6: and then I'll just have them terrible at bad and
- 1:22:36Speaker 6: you don't even have a you don't go through your
- 1:22:37Speaker 6: plan in your mind, you don't focus and mean, it's
- 1:22:39Speaker 6: like he's in there and it's like he's studying. No,
- 1:22:42Speaker 6: it's like he's studying fornt of final. Yeah, and I'm
- 1:22:45Speaker 6: almost every at bat, and it's you can see it
- 1:22:47Speaker 6: in his body and his mindset and how he approaches things.
- 1:22:50Speaker 6: And I think there's you know, part of the success
- 1:22:53Speaker 6: of these guys is if you watch them the there's
- 1:22:56Speaker 6: a great clip from the Kentucky's I think it was
- 1:23:01Speaker 6: a final out of an inning or something like and
- 1:23:03Speaker 6: Galvan is just going nuts behind home play, you know,
- 1:23:06Speaker 6: and and of course your excitement adds so much to
- 1:23:08Speaker 6: it too, but there and you could see this emotion
- 1:23:11Speaker 6: coming out of again, coming off the heels of a
- 1:23:13Speaker 6: big weekend before and we get, you know, all those
- 1:23:16Speaker 6: things that go with this sec we're describing. And they've
- 1:23:19Speaker 6: been able to forward their mentality each week to the
- 1:23:23Speaker 6: next game, to the next moment, and not to me
- 1:23:26Speaker 6: has been as impressive because here's my detailed research about
- 1:23:31Speaker 6: why I think that's true, not just that you know,
- 1:23:33Speaker 6: you're seeing the high five and in the emotion going on.
- 1:23:37Speaker 6: Texas to me right now is the most opportunistic team.
- 1:23:41Speaker 6: We talked about this a week If you make a mistake,
- 1:23:44Speaker 6: if you make an error, or you hit a guy
- 1:23:46Speaker 6: with two outs, or you do you know, one of those,
- 1:23:48Speaker 6: and then the game creates opportunities in itself the way
- 1:23:51Speaker 6: the games play. Then you as a team creates some
- 1:23:54Speaker 6: opportunities by you know, your detailed of attention to detailed
- 1:23:57Speaker 6: different things. But when the other team makes a mistake,
- 1:24:00Speaker 6: they have pounced on it. So why does that mean
- 1:24:03Speaker 6: to me? That tells you that they're forwarding their their
- 1:24:06Speaker 6: mindset each inning, each at bat, each game, all that
- 1:24:10Speaker 6: is going and they're they're not just taking a day off.
- 1:24:13Speaker 6: They're not taking a moment all in my mind, that's
- 1:24:15Speaker 6: what that signifies.
- 1:24:16Speaker 1: Yeah, another another the flip side of that, and long
- 1:24:22Speaker 1: Warrens benefited from some of this over the past weekend.
- 1:24:26Speaker 2: The the opponent.
- 1:24:27Speaker 1: Quite often does not take advantage of the opportunities that's handing.
- 1:24:32Speaker 1: Kentucky stranded a lot of runners during the week and
- 1:24:35Speaker 1: Aggie used to say, and I love this phrase. There
- 1:24:37Speaker 1: were so many that that that he had like the game,
- 1:24:40Speaker 1: She's a cruel mistress. And some of the other things
- 1:24:42Speaker 1: like that, and that the world was a very different
- 1:24:44Speaker 1: place for winners and losers. But one of his phrases
- 1:24:49Speaker 1: that I that I treasured is because it goes into
- 1:24:53Speaker 1: a metaphysical thing, which all he could do.
- 1:24:55Speaker 2: But his phrase was the game knows when it's not
- 1:25:00Speaker 2: being respected.
- 1:25:02Speaker 1: Indeed, so if you're stranding runners over and over is
- 1:25:07Speaker 1: if the game is a living entity itself, it will
- 1:25:11Speaker 1: punish you for not respecting it by taking advantage of
- 1:25:14Speaker 1: the opportunities that are presented per one.
- 1:25:17Speaker 6: Hundred percent, And if you're not emotionally dialed into the
- 1:25:20Speaker 6: physical piece of it, which emotions lead the physical side
- 1:25:24Speaker 6: of it, if you're not dialed into that and you're
- 1:25:26Speaker 6: not respectful of those moments and what that means, and
- 1:25:29Speaker 6: you're not fortifact playing your very best or doing your
- 1:25:32Speaker 6: very best, which you better do in this league, right,
- 1:25:35Speaker 6: because if you if you just take a minute off
- 1:25:37Speaker 6: or a second off, it'll get you. Yeah, and again,
- 1:25:40Speaker 6: I think this team has been so opportunistic and that
- 1:25:43Speaker 6: creates a lot of different conversations about what that looks
- 1:25:46Speaker 6: like in your one hundred percent, right, and you're in
- 1:25:48Speaker 6: what you're you know, saying what all you would talk
- 1:25:50Speaker 6: about in those different things, but they just I've been
- 1:25:53Speaker 6: so impressed with.
- 1:25:56Speaker 4: Each each pitch.
- 1:25:58Speaker 6: Each moment they play this game, you know, to the
- 1:26:02Speaker 6: standard that you hear them say it all.
- 1:26:03Speaker 1: The time, played with the standard up of the scoreboard.
- 1:26:05Speaker 6: That's right, right, And it's such an unbelievable And even
- 1:26:08Speaker 6: I heard Jim say it today.
- 1:26:09Speaker 4: It's a coachy thing.
- 1:26:11Speaker 6: But the players are all saying it, you better, but
- 1:26:13Speaker 6: they they're doing it.
- 1:26:15Speaker 1: Yeah, this comparison won't match up in every element because
- 1:26:20Speaker 1: they were different kinds of players, but I'm talking about
- 1:26:23Speaker 1: in terms of the intensity that they brought to the
- 1:26:26Speaker 1: game and how they didn't give away at bats as
- 1:26:28Speaker 1: you brought up Mendoza.
- 1:26:30Speaker 2: You remember a decade ago Mark Payton. Yeah, oh god, how.
- 1:26:35Speaker 1: You know when a gam where he was and that
- 1:26:38Speaker 1: they didn't The reason this kingdom mind also is when
- 1:26:41Speaker 1: Texas played the fifteen inning game on Saturday. It was
- 1:26:43Speaker 1: their longest game they played in ten years. And it
- 1:26:46Speaker 1: was April twenty fifteen, and it was in Stillwater. And
- 1:26:49Speaker 1: I told this story because it was on Friday night.
- 1:26:51Speaker 1: It was Friday a series opening. It was a day
- 1:26:54Speaker 1: that Shaka Smart was introduced as a new basketball coach.
- 1:26:56Speaker 1: Why had the bee here for the press conference? And
- 1:26:58Speaker 1: our friend David Garrett was up in Oklahoma and he
- 1:27:00Speaker 1: was gonna work with me that weekend. He said, I'll
- 1:27:03Speaker 1: call the Friday game until you get there. Whatever it
- 1:27:05Speaker 1: was an afternoon news conference or whatever. Well, the news
- 1:27:07Speaker 1: conference started late, all this stuff, and we got through
- 1:27:09Speaker 1: it and did it, and then I raced to the
- 1:27:11Speaker 1: airport and I get to DFW, and then the connection
- 1:27:14Speaker 1: was delayed.
- 1:27:15Speaker 2: And then by the time I get.
- 1:27:16Speaker 1: Into the car at will Rogers Airport and I flip
- 1:27:19Speaker 1: in a dial up number we had to the station.
- 1:27:22Speaker 1: The game's in the bottom of the ninth and I thought, okay, well,
- 1:27:25Speaker 1: I'm not going to be there.
- 1:27:25Speaker 2: It's tied, but it's in the bottom line. I won't
- 1:27:27Speaker 2: be there in time.
- 1:27:28Speaker 1: I drive the hour in fifteen minutes of still water,
- 1:27:30Speaker 1: get the still water, and when I get there, they're
- 1:27:33Speaker 1: going into the bottom of the thirteenth and David has
- 1:27:38Speaker 1: called the.
- 1:27:38Speaker 2: Entire game by himself.
- 1:27:40Speaker 1: So I park, I go upstairs, I get up to
- 1:27:43Speaker 1: the booth, and the bottom of the thirteenth inning they're
- 1:27:46Speaker 1: going to the fourteenth.
- 1:27:47Speaker 2: Texas to Oklahoma State.
- 1:27:49Speaker 1: Two long worn baseball continue to know, he takes off
- 1:27:50Speaker 1: the heads and because it's all yours, big boy, So I.
- 1:27:53Speaker 2: Did the final five innings of that game.
- 1:27:55Speaker 1: It went eighteen innings and Oklahoma State ended up winning.
- 1:27:59Speaker 1: But there was a fifth teen inning game there two
- 1:28:02Speaker 1: years prior, when Mark Payton stole home with a head
- 1:28:06Speaker 1: first slide in a one to nothing fifteen inning balgain.
- 1:28:09Speaker 1: That kind of approach, that kind of attitude, that's the
- 1:28:12Speaker 1: kind of stuff we see from Mendoza.
- 1:28:14Speaker 6: Yeah, he's a tough minded, really intuitive, never takes his
- 1:28:20Speaker 6: eye off the baseball.
- 1:28:21Speaker 4: Well that everybody goes, well, you're not.
- 1:28:22Speaker 6: You can't say, well, yeah, people do take their eye
- 1:28:24Speaker 6: off the baseball. They put their eyes down, they look around,
- 1:28:26Speaker 6: they get drifted, they lose their focus. Wherever that baseball is,
- 1:28:30Speaker 6: that young man's eyes are peeled on it. And that's
- 1:28:32Speaker 6: why he's such an intuitive player, tough minded.
- 1:28:35Speaker 4: And I got to be honest with you too. You know,
- 1:28:37Speaker 4: if you go back.
- 1:28:37Speaker 6: To the beginning of the year, they were hitting him
- 1:28:39Speaker 6: in the nine spoive yep, and he kept getting hits,
- 1:28:42Speaker 6: kept hitting hits, kept moving him up, kept moving him up,
- 1:28:45Speaker 6: and then all of a sudden you could watch the
- 1:28:46Speaker 6: offense really start to flourish when he got to the
- 1:28:49Speaker 6: top of the order because he was on base all
- 1:28:51Speaker 6: the time. His own base percenters was like five something
- 1:28:53Speaker 6: at one point time, and I was just like.
- 1:28:55Speaker 4: This guy's on base three times a game.
- 1:28:58Speaker 6: Yeah, but that's you know, and and when you're at
- 1:29:00Speaker 6: the top of that order and you had the older
- 1:29:02Speaker 6: hitters coming in, you know, behind him, and that's an
- 1:29:06Speaker 6: offensive weapon that's hard to describe and hard to defend.
- 1:29:09Speaker 1: The other guy's moved up to the orders, Galvian, Yeah,
- 1:29:11Speaker 1: who's now up to number two is the highest he's
- 1:29:13Speaker 1: ever batten. And I want to ask you something about him.
- 1:29:15Speaker 1: We need a break, and then I've got a couple
- 1:29:16Speaker 1: other things to ask you about. Ty Harrington with us
- 1:29:19Speaker 1: and we'll continue from UFCU.
- 1:29:20Speaker 2: Just falk Field.
- 1:29:21Speaker 1: I'm thirteen under the zone talking college baseball here with
- 1:29:24Speaker 1: Ty Harry Could. We've talked a lot about this long
- 1:29:26Speaker 1: warn baseball team. But this is something I mentioned earlier
- 1:29:29Speaker 1: and I asked Schlass about this. As a coach, did
- 1:29:35Speaker 1: you enjoy it when you would have a matchup with
- 1:29:38Speaker 1: your team against another team? And he had siblings going
- 1:29:41Speaker 1: up against one another, and in this case, you've got
- 1:29:44Speaker 1: twin brothers. Rene Galvan is the starting left fielder for
- 1:29:47Speaker 1: UTRGV Ryland of course starts behind the plate for Texas. Additionally,
- 1:29:53Speaker 1: you have to Quate Stewart, who played with those two
- 1:29:55Speaker 1: guys in Sentton and also why Track the pitcher. They
- 1:30:00Speaker 1: were all part of Eight Realities is twenty twenty two four,
- 1:30:03Speaker 1: a state championship team that won it right here on
- 1:30:06Speaker 1: this field that UFCU just far field. And so I said, yeah,
- 1:30:09Speaker 1: final longer we win the game. You know that kind
- 1:30:10Speaker 1: of thing. And I know that's a coach thing, and
- 1:30:12Speaker 1: he laughed about it afterwards. But it's a nice wrinkle and.
- 1:30:15Speaker 4: It is fun.
- 1:30:15Speaker 6: I'll tell you, I never really put a whole lot.
- 1:30:18Speaker 6: It only happened to me maybe four times. I was
- 1:30:20Speaker 6: trying to think when you brought that up, how many
- 1:30:22Speaker 6: times I think it happened to.
- 1:30:23Speaker 4: Me four times?
- 1:30:24Speaker 6: And ironically two of them are of a team Tyxas
- 1:30:27Speaker 6: State and UTA and Tyler Sibley.
- 1:30:30Speaker 4: Who played me.
- 1:30:30Speaker 6: His younger brother played at UTA, and then Sean Garcia
- 1:30:34Speaker 6: played for ME and also.
- 1:30:36Speaker 4: Coached for me.
- 1:30:36Speaker 6: His older brother played on her younger brother played at UTA.
- 1:30:39Speaker 6: So there were a handful of times and I think
- 1:30:41Speaker 6: it happened to me one time at junior college.
- 1:30:43Speaker 4: But once you keep going about, it's like anything else.
- 1:30:47Speaker 6: Once the first pitch is thrown, all that goes away, right,
- 1:30:50Speaker 6: and then's who's gonna win, How do we gonna win?
- 1:30:52Speaker 6: What do we gotta do to win? And that becomes
- 1:30:54Speaker 6: your mindset. But I think it'd be more confusing for
- 1:30:57Speaker 6: the parents.
- 1:30:59Speaker 1: Well quite Frankly, Ryland told me because I'd heard the
- 1:31:02Speaker 1: rumor of this, so I said, fact or fiction. I'm
- 1:31:06Speaker 1: told you had or between you and your brother, you
- 1:31:08Speaker 1: had to come up with something between forty and fifty
- 1:31:11Speaker 1: tickets just for family and close friends. He says that
- 1:31:14Speaker 1: is fact. Yeah, he said, I came up with thirty,
- 1:31:16Speaker 1: and then and then Renee came up with about fifteen
- 1:31:21Speaker 1: or so, somewhere between forty and fifty friends and family
- 1:31:24Speaker 1: and all that sort of stuff.
- 1:31:25Speaker 2: We're going to be here for that game.
- 1:31:26Speaker 6: You know, think about this too, because you know how
- 1:31:28Speaker 6: good Adrian Allies was here, right, and then I coached
- 1:31:31Speaker 6: his brother for a year or two at Texas State,
- 1:31:34Speaker 6: my second Southwest Texas in but point being sent in
- 1:31:38Speaker 6: Texas not the biggest town, right, then there's a lot
- 1:31:43Speaker 6: of other five A and six A high schools that
- 1:31:46Speaker 6: you know that are big name that have not produced
- 1:31:50Speaker 6: as many baseball players as that small town has, and
- 1:31:53Speaker 6: how important baseball is in.
- 1:31:54Speaker 1: That town, and what he has done to elevate it,
- 1:31:56Speaker 1: what Adrian has done. In fact, I even asked, silly question,
- 1:31:59Speaker 1: I should know better this know one that covering high
- 1:32:01Speaker 1: school sports?
- 1:32:02Speaker 2: Way I do?
- 1:32:02Speaker 1: But I asked, uh, I asked h rylan. I said,
- 1:32:06Speaker 1: is uh coach allIt? He's gonna be here because now
- 1:32:09Speaker 1: they got a game nights Tuesday night. Tuesday nights a
- 1:32:11Speaker 1: game night you gotta play. So they've got it. They've
- 1:32:14Speaker 1: got a ball game to night. But it was Adrian
- 1:32:16Speaker 1: who tweeted out the fact that we're going to be
- 1:32:18Speaker 1: four sentting pirates on this field.
- 1:32:20Speaker 2: Uh, or at least in this game.
- 1:32:22Speaker 1: We'll see about why I trin could be pitches, but
- 1:32:24Speaker 1: but uh, there will be four sitting pirates uh from
- 1:32:28Speaker 1: that twenty twenty two state championship team on this deal?
- 1:32:30Speaker 2: All right?
- 1:32:32Speaker 4: Uh?
- 1:32:32Speaker 1: Texas State had a had a monstrous UH opponent to
- 1:32:37Speaker 1: deal with last weekend. UH Southern Miss ended up winning
- 1:32:40Speaker 1: one out of the three ball games out of there.
- 1:32:42Speaker 4: What what?
- 1:32:42Speaker 1: What was your takeaway having seen that whole thing against
- 1:32:45Speaker 1: that good Southern Miss ball lay?
- 1:32:46Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 1:32:46Speaker 6: You well, the last thing you said is important. Good
- 1:32:49Speaker 6: Southern Miss team. They are good.
- 1:32:52Speaker 2: And they transitioned nicely after coach Berry.
- 1:32:55Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:32:55Speaker 6: Yeah, it's got such the most unbelievable guys we'll ever
- 1:32:57Speaker 6: meet in your lifetime.
- 1:32:58Speaker 4: I texted him for the game on Thursday and said,
- 1:33:00Speaker 4: are you coming?
- 1:33:01Speaker 6: He goes, no, shot, I'm at Lake such and such
- 1:33:04Speaker 6: and Georgia somewhere right now fishing. No, but I'll be listening,
- 1:33:07Speaker 6: watching watch it. Yeah, maybe watching and listening and and
- 1:33:12Speaker 6: but so it's it is a really good Southern Miss team.
- 1:33:15Speaker 6: They have probably really four hitters in their lineup that
- 1:33:19Speaker 6: that are very dangerous hitters. And any one time you
- 1:33:22Speaker 6: can see why they are a top They have been
- 1:33:24Speaker 6: a top twenty five team and a top twenty team. Actually,
- 1:33:27Speaker 6: you can see that Texas State. The first game finding
- 1:33:31Speaker 6: out was a good game. Saturday got got away from them.
- 1:33:33Speaker 6: Sunday they're down, They're chasing four going into the eighth.
- 1:33:36Speaker 4: Southern Miss has to.
- 1:33:37Speaker 6: Go to their bullpen to get to their closer and
- 1:33:40Speaker 6: the seventh, and because of that, I think maybe extending
- 1:33:43Speaker 6: him a little bit, then they were able to come up.
- 1:33:46Speaker 6: Galloway came up with a huge, huge, two out base
- 1:33:50Speaker 6: hit up the middle of runners on second third to
- 1:33:52Speaker 6: tie the game. His first weekend back since opening weekend
- 1:33:56Speaker 6: when he got broke his handmate bone and so had
- 1:33:58Speaker 6: huge at bet and then came up did something one
- 1:34:01Speaker 6: of his legs on a rounding first, So don't know
- 1:34:04Speaker 6: how long he's out, but a huge hit for them.
- 1:34:08Speaker 6: Samson Q came up with a homer the inning before,
- 1:34:11Speaker 6: and then they got a walk off hit Bathroom with
- 1:34:12Speaker 6: the bases loaded to win the game. Look when you're
- 1:34:15Speaker 6: chasing four against the top twenty five team and you're
- 1:34:17Speaker 6: in a desperate need of a win, you know, sometimes
- 1:34:19Speaker 6: it looked bleak, and they were able to hang in
- 1:34:21Speaker 6: there and come up with a win and a needed
- 1:34:23Speaker 6: win for them.
- 1:34:24Speaker 1: There are three teams in the Sun Belt who were
- 1:34:27Speaker 1: ranked in the top in the top twenty five. Three
- 1:34:30Speaker 1: teams Coastal who were used to seeing Coastal Caroline every
- 1:34:33Speaker 1: year and their transition without coach Gilmore and retired Troy
- 1:34:38Speaker 1: and then and then Southern miss A. Which of the
- 1:34:42Speaker 1: three do you think is the best? And b is
- 1:34:45Speaker 1: this you can go in reverse order. Is this the
- 1:34:49Speaker 1: toughest conference season that you can remember Texas State having.
- 1:34:54Speaker 2: To deal with?
- 1:34:57Speaker 4: Uh?
- 1:34:58Speaker 1: No, because you had some there were light years in
- 1:35:01Speaker 1: the Southland and then and then even in the Sunbelt.
- 1:35:03Speaker 6: Yeah, it might be like I so, all right, let
- 1:35:06Speaker 6: me answer the first question. Okay, all so, Troy is
- 1:35:09Speaker 6: is really good. I saw him early. I haven't done.
- 1:35:12Speaker 6: I haven't seen him physically, but other than on TV,
- 1:35:14Speaker 6: he's got a little He's got.
- 1:35:16Speaker 4: A few more arms than what he had.
- 1:35:17Speaker 6: He had a really offensive team last year and the
- 1:35:19Speaker 6: year before, right, I mean really offensive, but they didn't
- 1:35:23Speaker 6: have enough arms to get through there.
- 1:35:24Speaker 4: They've got more arms now.
- 1:35:26Speaker 6: Coastal might be one of the best pitching teams in
- 1:35:28Speaker 6: the in around. I mean when you go in there
- 1:35:30Speaker 6: and you start digging in there. Their numbers are really
- 1:35:32Speaker 6: really impressive, but they don't hit as much as what
- 1:35:36Speaker 6: all of Gary's team. Gary Hillmore's teams were so offensive. Yeah,
- 1:35:40Speaker 6: and I mean big physical monsters that you stood in
- 1:35:43Speaker 6: the box. They don't have the offense that they've had,
- 1:35:46Speaker 6: but they do pitch and they do play really good defense.
- 1:35:49Speaker 4: Uh And Southern Misses, Like I said, they.
- 1:35:51Speaker 6: Are a top twenty five team. All three of those
- 1:35:53Speaker 6: teams are the top twenty five teams. But you know,
- 1:35:57Speaker 6: so when you ask you that question is the toughest one.
- 1:35:59Speaker 4: So the some o.
- 1:36:00Speaker 6: It's had four teams in the last three years, so
- 1:36:03Speaker 6: you know, the team that's not playing up to what
- 1:36:06Speaker 6: it normally does Lavia Ye and Louisiana, and of course
- 1:36:11Speaker 6: Matt always always gets his teams going. At the end
- 1:36:13Speaker 6: of the year, they play at a different level than
- 1:36:15Speaker 6: what they played all year long.
- 1:36:17Speaker 4: And then I looked in there and I actually visit
- 1:36:19Speaker 4: with a few people.
- 1:36:20Speaker 6: They had two of their better guys go down to
- 1:36:22Speaker 6: So again it's this injury thing that that keeps, you know,
- 1:36:26Speaker 6: ramping up all over. You have to be able to
- 1:36:28Speaker 6: survive that somehow, some way. But the sumb Belt is
- 1:36:33Speaker 6: good again.
- 1:36:34Speaker 4: You know, let's talk about tonight real quick.
- 1:36:36Speaker 6: It's you said you brought up the Southland, so you
- 1:36:39Speaker 6: know U t RGV and Derrek Matlocke and then.
- 1:36:41Speaker 2: They fill the transition back in the South.
- 1:36:45Speaker 6: Yeah, it's a great It's one of the best sayings. Look,
- 1:36:48Speaker 6: I'm the old fan of the South of Night because
- 1:36:49Speaker 6: I was in it for for so long and and
- 1:36:51Speaker 6: and loved their leadership. They had a great time, but
- 1:36:54Speaker 6: they're that team that's at that you know that r
- 1:36:57Speaker 6: p I position that if they you know, they pick
- 1:36:59Speaker 6: off on in different places and take care of their
- 1:37:02Speaker 6: conference business. You're looking at a team that it would
- 1:37:05Speaker 6: be trying to you know, chase that large bit. Yeah,
- 1:37:07Speaker 6: that's gonna make tonight interesting because now I will say this,
- 1:37:10Speaker 6: you know this a lot of team because I've done it.
- 1:37:12Speaker 4: I'm not what I'm about to tell you I've done.
- 1:37:14Speaker 6: So you go in on a Tuesday and you got
- 1:37:17Speaker 6: a chance to knock off a top you know five team,
- 1:37:19Speaker 6: a top ten team. Then your Friday starter would be
- 1:37:23Speaker 6: your guy and that's his bullpen night. So you hold
- 1:37:25Speaker 6: him out and you tell him before the game, no
- 1:37:28Speaker 6: bullpen until the seventh inning. And if we got a
- 1:37:30Speaker 6: chance to win the game, then you decide whether you're
- 1:37:33Speaker 6: getting a bullpen or you're going in the game to
- 1:37:34Speaker 6: get your your work on the mound with a chance to.
- 1:37:36Speaker 1: Save a GAMESA in Texas State bot one.
- 1:37:38Speaker 4: Hundred percent, right, So we've all done it. Now.
- 1:37:40Speaker 6: The difference for tonight that Derek would have match like
- 1:37:43Speaker 6: would have have to make the decision about is short
- 1:37:46Speaker 6: week round quick turnaround.
- 1:37:48Speaker 4: Right now, it's not just that it's it's a sixth day.
- 1:37:50Speaker 6: They're usually on a seven day you know rotation, right
- 1:37:53Speaker 6: because of set Friday to Friday, Saturday, Saturday. With the starters,
- 1:37:56Speaker 6: this would be a Friday to Thursday, and then it's
- 1:38:00Speaker 6: then you gets tough and because then it's the next week,
- 1:38:02Speaker 6: it's a short arrest to and so it just so
- 1:38:05Speaker 6: there's a decision that would have to be made as
- 1:38:07Speaker 6: to whether they would run him out there if they
- 1:38:09Speaker 6: had a chance to beat Texas, you know, and at
- 1:38:12Speaker 6: the end of the game or close the game out.
- 1:38:13Speaker 6: So be interesting to see number one, if it comes
- 1:38:15Speaker 6: up at number two, if it does what they do.
- 1:38:16Speaker 1: It well, if they beat the number three RPI team
- 1:38:19Speaker 1: of the country, they're number one polls, but they're number
- 1:38:21Speaker 1: three in the RPI, that's a huge.
- 1:38:23Speaker 6: Huge scoop of points to your resume. And so I
- 1:38:27Speaker 6: got one last question for you. I'm curious. This came
- 1:38:30Speaker 6: up in a conversation Sunday night after the Texas State game.
- 1:38:34Speaker 6: I'll stop and had dinner with some friends of mine
- 1:38:35Speaker 6: and I was I had this question. I'm sure there's
- 1:38:37Speaker 6: a simple answer. If you if you play what is
- 1:38:40Speaker 6: it talking about the polls?
- 1:38:42Speaker 4: Right? How fluid it is.
- 1:38:43Speaker 6: If I play a team in March and they're number
- 1:38:46Speaker 6: five in the country and I beat them.
- 1:38:48Speaker 4: By April, they're out of the pole.
- 1:38:52Speaker 6: So and then we get into May and they're you know,
- 1:38:56Speaker 6: fluid up and down. You know, So what does it
- 1:38:58Speaker 6: really count as because you'll hit people advertise that they
- 1:39:03Speaker 6: had ten top ten wins or whatever.
- 1:39:06Speaker 4: That looks like, So, I mean, what is it? What
- 1:39:09Speaker 4: is it?
- 1:39:10Speaker 1: You know what you just described? You described the long
- 1:39:12Speaker 1: worn football season last ball. Remember when they were beating
- 1:39:16Speaker 1: ranked teams that fell out of the poll and people
- 1:39:17Speaker 1: are like, well, you haven't beating anybody.
- 1:39:19Speaker 2: You don't have a win of a ranked no.
- 1:39:20Speaker 3: No.
- 1:39:20Speaker 2: At the time they were number yeah, but they aren't now.
- 1:39:22Speaker 1: It depends on it depends, I think, on how that
- 1:39:27Speaker 1: team is playing at the moment.
- 1:39:29Speaker 2: You have to get some credit for that.
- 1:39:32Speaker 1: But I will say this, the earlier in that season
- 1:39:36Speaker 1: that you get that win, there's a sliding scale as
- 1:39:39Speaker 1: to how much it's really going to count as opposed
- 1:39:42Speaker 1: to later in the season. A win here for UTRGV
- 1:39:45Speaker 1: would be big because we're mid April.
- 1:39:47Speaker 4: One percent.
- 1:39:48Speaker 6: There's a lot of data, a lot of data in
- 1:39:50Speaker 6: your background now right.
- 1:39:51Speaker 2: There's a big difference.
- 1:39:52Speaker 1: Between winning on April fifteenth and February fifteen. There's just
- 1:39:57Speaker 1: just a difference. Hey, have funnelment all casting. All right,
- 1:40:01Speaker 1: it's Ty Harrington with this. We'll be back to wrap
- 1:40:03Speaker 1: up today's program here on thirteen under the Zone.
