- 0:00Yeah, we're back live at the iHeart Dunkin Music Lounge. We could do
- 0:04this all night, but we only got an hour with coach. I gotta
- 0:07tell you about cam Stewart. By the way, Spencer, I'm sorry,
- 0:13I can play golf. Funny, I know you were trying to pick the
- 0:15game up a little bit. You might want to speak with him for some
- 0:18off time about it, because he can play. We played in this event
- 0:21at Lake of Isles a few a month or two ago, and he was
- 0:24killing it. He was in our group, thank god, because he was
- 0:27killing the ball down down the fairway. But the point of it is you
- 0:31talked about this before. He is a competitive guy. Wow. I mean
- 0:35if he didn't make a putt, you know, you play those scrambles,
- 0:38you get four chances to make the same putt, and he putted last a
- 0:41lot, and if he didn't make that putt, he was genuinely upset.
- 0:44I mean, he was mad as hell that he didn't help the team in
- 0:48a golf tournament, at a charity golf tournament. So I really liked his
- 0:52personality. He's a good guy. No, he's like a anger management And
- 0:56I'm saying that quit a minute that's how shot. He is just perfect.
- 1:03I mean, just the way that everything broke Andre going down to the last
- 1:07minute, it was not you know, with the specter of Steph, Tristan
- 1:14and Andre, we didn't really have a starting spot on the perimeter, so
- 1:19we kind of got stuck in the portal, just guys going off the board,
- 1:23and it was not ideal. And then there's a lot of good fortune
- 1:26there where Andre goes in and now it enters the draft, stays in and
- 1:32now a two way player that can make big shots and it is a really
- 1:37good shooter and or a high level shooter. And he's got the he's got
- 1:41the mental makeup to play well at Yukon. Like when he's struggling, then
- 1:46the external noise gets loud, he will be able to bounce back from that,
- 1:49which is like something that you start really looking for here because you do
- 1:57have to be mentally strong to play here or coach here. So I think
- 1:59it'll be all the Yeah, one thing I noticed in the in the Blue
- 2:01White Night, he just seems like a natural player. He just flows in
- 2:06the game and he makes the right play. If it's not a pass,
- 2:08it's a shot. You don't have to worry about him, like not taking
- 2:12the shot he's supposed to take or not making the pass. I mean,
- 2:15there's a lot of things about him. He's just a pure basketball player.
- 2:19Yeah, he's like you know, guys like him in a caravan, really
- 2:24the whole group. I mean, these guys are just they're not complicated.
- 2:29They don't have a big circle of friends and mentors and advisors, so like
- 2:35small circle. They love the game, they're about winning. He fits right
- 2:39in. Yeah, Tristan Newton came back and I was happy about it.
- 2:45I'm sure you were. He had to play the point a lot last year,
- 2:49and he's not a natural point guard really, and there'd be some nights
- 2:51where, you know, get eight and please I'd say that because he's gonna
- 2:54he does not listen, miss him off. Maybe that's good, No,
- 2:59but he really I think that's a real boost because the guy's got experience.
- 3:04I mean, what he did in that championship game against San Diego State was
- 3:07lights out. I mean basketball has got positionless nowadays. You know, the
- 3:09old school point guard, you know that that's like kind of like a dying
- 3:15breed in a lot of ways, and just really our system of how we're
- 3:20trying to play basketball now is what we We're not ballscreen reliant like a lot
- 3:24of programs are where it's like if the ball screen game is not working,
- 3:30like you you know what at a luck on offense. That's part of what
- 3:36we do offensively, But we run a lot of off the ball screens.
- 3:40We we try to attack you from everywhere on the court, try to really
- 3:46open up the court and and do a lot of creative things that keep you
- 3:50guessing and and you know, keep one player from overhandling, which you know
- 3:54allows you know that, and you know that was an issue with us in
- 3:59prior years. So we're trying to recruit guards and aren't going to be Paul
- 4:01dominant and uh and not have to rely on just one player offensively to create
- 4:09it like it's created off a movement pass deception. Yeah, that's the beauty
- 4:13of that Portland tournament back in November. Uh, I mean it was just
- 4:16just a clinic and team basketball. You talk about centerless, but wait a
- 4:20minute, you got a guy that is a legit center. Donovan Klingon won
- 4:25a championship as a freshman, and he looks to me like he's getting better.
- 4:29I like his range he's been shooting threes in practice. I know that,
- 4:33coach, Come on hurting me, Come on now. Ben Darnell,
- 4:38resident basketball college college analyst says, how many is he shooting in a game
- 4:42this year? How many you're gonna let him shoot? Me? And Paul
- 4:45talked about this on the way over right, and Mike is hurting us now
- 4:47right, Paul, Oh, he shouldn't be thinking about shooting three. He
- 4:54should only think about shooting a three if his guy is in like a drop
- 4:58coverage, like a culk breader, like dominate the game, like dominate defensively
- 5:02at the rim, dominate offensively at the rim. The greatness of adamison Ogo
- 5:08is you had to beg him to shoot threes. Really, I don't know
- 5:11that. Wow, you've been around now for years. That's a great That's
- 5:17that's counterintuitive only and that's what great. And like so like you want to
- 5:23coach players that aren't trying to show to the next level what their abilities are
- 5:29that they're all about, like what is the best way to help my team
- 5:31win? And I think Donovan's best gift away from the basket, the best
- 5:36thing he does is is pass and see and his his feel and his anticipation
- 5:43as a passer and as a roller in the ball screen game. And you
- 5:47know, and there's gonna be certain games where it may dictate for him for
- 5:51it to be worth it for us versus a Caul Renner who is just like
- 5:58in the paint protecting the rim where it may make sense. But you know,
- 6:01he's we're asking him to double his production. Then some he needs to
- 6:05just concentrate on dominating a rund the paint. We'll send him this piece of
- 6:10tape that we just record. He don't need a tape. He knows.
- 6:15He doesn't listen to you people. He listens to me. I don't expect
- 6:17him to. He's listening to you though. We know. Yeah, he's
- 6:20a great kids. We got about thirty seconds going to this break. We
- 6:25haven't mentioned Caravan yet. That guy is like a savant to me. Talk
- 6:28to him. I watch him play. He does what is needed. What
- 6:31is it we need rebounds? All right, get some rebounds. We need
- 6:34to make a shot into the half. He'd done that three or four times.
- 6:38He just seems to do what's needed. And that is a quality that
- 6:42is valuable. Great player got a chance to go down before his career is
- 6:46over as one of the greatest players, and if he takes care of his
- 6:49business this year and the team does what it's capable of, one of the
- 6:53biggest winners to ever play in a place that's won a lot, he'll be
- 6:56an NBA draft pick. Just about all the right things. Sets a tone
- 7:02in the program where he's just like about basketball in school and he's like a
- 7:06quadruple major. The guy's super brilliant. Hard for our staff to coach because
- 7:14he's so much smarter than us, but like doesn't get enough credit. It
- 7:19doesn't get enough credit. I agree with it all right, Dan Hurley with
- 7:21us. We'll be back after this time out. The Yukon Men's Basketball Coaches
