- 0:00Everyone. This is Jacob Emerson with the Becker's
- 0:02Payer Issues podcast.
- 0:04Thrilled today to be joined by Brian Chaney,
- 0:06who serves as division senior vice president of
- 0:08sales operations and commercial markets growth at HealthCare
- 0:11Service Corporation.
- 0:13Brian, thank you so much for taking the
- 0:14time to be with me on the podcast
- 0:16today.
- 0:17Happy to be here. Thanks, Jacob.
- 0:19Absolutely. And before we dive into everything we
- 0:21wanna talk with you about today, Brian, can
- 0:22you first tell us a little bit more
- 0:23about yourself
- 0:24and what it is that you do today
- 0:26at HCSC?
- 0:28Happy to. I've, been here at HCFC for
- 0:30for twenty years, which seems either like a
- 0:33short day or a lifetime depending on the
- 0:34day.
- 0:35Always worked in different parts of our commercial
- 0:38or employer space. So I've known small group
- 0:40employers, large,
- 0:42worked with our national customers for five or
- 0:44six years.
- 0:45And for the last about year, I've been
- 0:46in charge of of trying to find solutions
- 0:49for all of them.
- 0:50In the health care space, sometimes we call
- 0:52that a product, we call it an offering,
- 0:53we call it things like, I think we're
- 0:55gonna dive into today.
- 0:56And the summary of those things is, like,
- 0:58what are we doing to solve their health
- 1:00care problems and keep their employees,
- 1:02you know, as best we possibly can. So
- 1:04that's that's why I get up and think
- 1:06about every day if that helps.
- 1:08That is super helpful, and appreciate you giving
- 1:10the audience some background there, Brian.
- 1:12So so we're here today to talk a
- 1:14little bit about
- 1:15HCSC launching a new digital health platform called
- 1:19the Unity Health Hub, and it's aimed at
- 1:21helping employers
- 1:22more easily navigate the currently fragmented
- 1:25digital health landscape.
- 1:27So for for health plans listening in or
- 1:30other employer benefits leaders out there who might
- 1:33not be super familiar with what this is,
- 1:36talk to us about what the problem was
- 1:37that existed before the hub and that that
- 1:40ultimately made this necessary and and how the
- 1:43platform actually works day to day for an
- 1:45employee on the ground or or the employer
- 1:47that needs it.
- 1:48Yeah. Happy to. I I think
- 1:51this concept and and this thing we're launching,
- 1:53like most good things, are are born out
- 1:55of necessity. Necessity. Right? They're born out of
- 1:56truly solving a problem. And
- 1:59what we continue to hear, from employers across
- 2:01the country is is frankly exhaustion
- 2:04out of time,
- 2:06themselves in terms of navigating this landscape that
- 2:09we're gonna go into.
- 2:10Some rough numbers of the thousands of digital
- 2:13point solutions that are out there would would
- 2:15kinda lead you to this point of just
- 2:16fatigue over which is the best, how am
- 2:19I solving employee problems. So that was the
- 2:21thesis. Right? Is can we do that better?
- 2:23And certainly, we you know, HCSC and and
- 2:26all carriers work with some of these digital
- 2:28assets,
- 2:29today.
- 2:30The the trick is how do you create
- 2:32an ecosystem, and that's what we believe we're
- 2:34launching,
- 2:36that allows for optionality,
- 2:38inside of what the employer member can see,
- 2:41letting that digital solution find them at the
- 2:44right place, the right time.
- 2:45And then one of the most important things
- 2:47is how do they know if it actually
- 2:48worked?
- 2:50So in a nutshell, the Unity Health Hub,
- 2:53will allow them to manage these different categories,
- 2:56and that's how they tend to think about
- 2:57it. Like, who's solving my my diabetes issue,
- 3:00my women's health, my weight management, like like,
- 3:02things that are common categories?
- 3:05Who's gonna create an a network, if you
- 3:06will, Jacob, of those solutions?
- 3:09That's the first step, just building the technical
- 3:11integration.
- 3:12Then who's gonna make it consumable by the
- 3:15member?
- 3:16Who's going to create a way, and we
- 3:17can talk a bit more about this, where
- 3:19the member knows where to find that solution
- 3:21based on
- 3:23maybe their particular acuity. Like, are in the
- 3:25weight management category, are they severely overweight, or
- 3:28do they just have some maintenance they'd like
- 3:30to do?
- 3:31Our solution will give them that guidance. It
- 3:33would then give them a hub of reporting
- 3:34and data where they can see all the
- 3:36analytics in one place.
- 3:38And then the most important part, don't lose
- 3:41any of that health care journey out there
- 3:43in the point solution itself. And what I
- 3:45mean there in the fourth point is can
- 3:47you then connect the data and connect that
- 3:50part of their care journey back to everything
- 3:52they're doing. And so that's why we took
- 3:54some time to settle in on on a
- 3:56partner and our approach that we think does
- 3:58all four of of those things.
- 4:01Understood. So you're really trying to tackle that
- 4:03vendor fatigue that everyone in the industry is
- 4:05familiar with, and then ultimately making it easier
- 4:08for for the members to navigate
- 4:10this this complicated space.
- 4:12And, you know, we we we've seen a
- 4:13lot of other insurers across the country launch
- 4:16vendor hubs in the last few years as
- 4:18well.
- 4:18We've we've also heard from health plans from
- 4:20employers
- 4:21ultimately burned by point solutions that don't deliver
- 4:25on on the outcomes that they promise. And
- 4:27so what's the what's the vetting criteria for
- 4:30the solutions that are gonna be offered across
- 4:33the hub,
- 4:34and how does how does HSC plan to
- 4:36handle a vendor that might underperform against,
- 4:39some of the stated benchmarks that they put
- 4:41out?
- 4:42Yeah. Great question. I think there's two two
- 4:44lanes here that are important to the employer.
- 4:47And one is that we have some sort
- 4:49of vetting process to your point.
- 4:51And, really, what they want that to do,
- 4:52what they want us to empower is transparency
- 4:55into the data, which I said,
- 4:58but the actual touch, the the moment where
- 5:00you influenced the member and proven
- 5:03that each and I'll use a word I
- 5:05think is familiar to folks in industry. Each
- 5:07milestone,
- 5:08each point that you said you would move
- 5:09the member to access this reading or this
- 5:12test or this thing
- 5:14is accurately reported on so that they know
- 5:16that it worked.
- 5:18And and the thing that you and I
- 5:19would hear in industry a lot is in
- 5:20that vetting, are you making sure that nobody's
- 5:23counting the same dollar twice? Right? And and
- 5:25so that the real true way to do
- 5:27that is to be able to see how
- 5:29they move through apps, how they move through
- 5:30the selection process.
- 5:32And, frankly,
- 5:33in time, these point solutions themselves will probably
- 5:37come in and out of those care categories
- 5:39as they have to prove it
- 5:41in a way that is, the digital touch
- 5:43point, not some of the older school things
- 5:45like how many mailers did you send to
- 5:47their home, or did you send them a
- 5:49text message? Those things are valid,
- 5:51but it's really like, did you actually move
- 5:53the needle through the site of care, the
- 5:55application of care? That's kind of lane one.
- 5:58Lane two is some of these, especially larger
- 6:00employers say, like, I've already vetted.
- 6:03I've done some identification of one that I
- 6:05think hits my population need. And what I
- 6:07want you to really do, which we can
- 6:09through Unity Health Hub, is simply enable it
- 6:12very quickly for me so that I can
- 6:14test and I can validate. So we'll do
- 6:16both, Jacob. We'll have a more curated set
- 6:18of things where we provide proof points and
- 6:20data, and then we will allow the larger,
- 6:23more custom employers to say, I've already picked
- 6:25four or five. Can you do it quickly
- 6:27for me? So I can get it to
- 6:28market and find out if it works.
- 6:31Understood. So so,
- 6:33a deep vetting process, but then getting this
- 6:35up quickly for these employers. So, yeah, that
- 6:38makes sense.
- 6:39And, you know, we we've also heard you
- 6:41you mentioned this earlier, Brian, but we've heard
- 6:42from, health plans over the years as well
- 6:44of
- 6:45building, acquiring digital health infrastructure.
- 6:48It's it it's complicated, and it takes time.
- 6:50Mhmm. And some companies have seen mixed results.
- 6:53So,
- 6:54ultimately, what is the Unity Health Hub do
- 6:56for the self insured employer for the large
- 6:59corporation,
- 7:00that has a good benefits consultant?
- 7:03What does the Unity Health Hub do,
- 7:05differently than what that employer maybe could have
- 7:07pieced together on their own in the past?
- 7:09Yeah. I I think I think speed is
- 7:11the biggest thing that we held true there.
- 7:14And what I mean by speed and and
- 7:15scalability
- 7:16is,
- 7:17when you do those direct integrations
- 7:19with carriers, whether that's HCSC or anybody,
- 7:23it's IT work. Right? And it's big, and
- 7:24it can be cumbersome and feel costly in
- 7:27long timelines.
- 7:28By going with a solution like Unity Health
- 7:30Hub, you you pick a specialist type thing
- 7:33and have it get really good at doing
- 7:35that quickly and efficiently,
- 7:37sharing data standards where you don't have to
- 7:39do everything as a total custom one off
- 7:42because you've built a process that is just
- 7:44hyper efficient
- 7:45in just that piece of the ecosystem.
- 7:48And that is a solve that, especially as
- 7:50you said, upmarket, we hear all the time.
- 7:53I I wanna try it on my own.
- 7:54I wanna do this, but that shouldn't take,
- 7:56you know, an eight to ten month
- 7:58three party,
- 8:00IT project to get off the ground. Should
- 8:02it? It's a question they ask. So we
- 8:03we think this solves a big part of
- 8:05that problem.
- 8:07Absolutely. So trying to remove that that big
- 8:09IT barrier that a lot of employers
- 8:12often face, the the investment time and and
- 8:14money. It's funny by selling it with another
- 8:17IT company. Right? But one that Yeah. Focuses.
- 8:20Sure. That makes sense. Yeah. Yeah. Well,
- 8:23Brian, what else are we missing here? Anything
- 8:25we haven't touched on about the Unity Health
- 8:27Hub or anything else you wanna mention while
- 8:30you've got the ears of a a lot
- 8:31of other health plan colleagues from around the
- 8:33country?
- 8:35Yeah. I think the part we maybe didn't
- 8:37hit as much yet is, like, what is
- 8:38that gonna feel like to the member, to
- 8:40the employee?
- 8:41And so if you picture, you know, their
- 8:43willingness to step into a carrier's digital app
- 8:46in the first place,
- 8:47Once they're there, the Unity Health Hub becomes
- 8:50a layer that lets them either questionnaire based
- 8:53or based on something we might know about
- 8:55them.
- 8:56The member sees, oh, I could go click
- 8:58into each of these point solutions now in
- 9:01one unified journey.
- 9:03When that Jacob becomes
- 9:05a separate app or a separate connection,
- 9:08we find that we lose the member. Right?
- 9:10They they don't make that leap to go
- 9:11pull up a different thing and continue their
- 9:14digital journey there.
- 9:16So as we roll this out, that's been
- 9:17a big part of the focus is how
- 9:19do you keep the member engaged,
- 9:21seeing this as just a simple extension of
- 9:23the benefits their employer offers,
- 9:26and then wanting to to continue to click
- 9:28through things. So that's the one piece I
- 9:30would really want people to understand the vision
- 9:32of.
- 9:33Yeah. No. And definitely appreciate appreciate you adding
- 9:36that on there. Very important to for audience
- 9:38to know ultimately how the member is impacted
- 9:40by this on the ground at the end
- 9:42of the day.
- 9:43Brian, I really appreciate you taking the time
- 9:45to chat with us about this and and
- 9:47looking forward, to hearing how this all goes
- 9:49for you,
- 9:50as this continues to roll out. Really appreciate
- 9:53it. Yeah. Happy to do it. Maybe we
- 9:54get back together when, when it's got some
- 9:56miles on it and talk about some successes.
- 9:58That would be great. So Absolutely. Door's open
- 10:01anytime. Thanks for chatting with us.
- 10:03Thank you. And to our listeners, if you'd
