Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Tiffany and Cook, Craig, Anthony Harp coming at you. I
- 0:03Speaker 1: was going to say live, but fully recorded at live
- 0:05Speaker 1: as we're doing it, but fully recorded as you're experiencing
- 0:08Speaker 1: it from the You project. Hi, Tiff high aps, how
- 0:13Speaker 1: are you?
- 0:14Speaker 2: I'm very good? Thank you?
- 0:15Speaker 1: How are you? Fuck at e? Fuck? Yeah? Yeah, it's
- 0:18Speaker 1: Friday morning. It's ten twenty in Suburbs, ten twenty in Suburbs.
- 0:24Speaker 1: Soon I'll be.
- 0:25Speaker 2: Able to play a little melody as you're seeing that.
- 0:29Speaker 1: Well, I just played you something funny that Melissa sent me,
- 0:34Speaker 1: so I guess we can tell people this. So one
- 0:37Speaker 1: of the things that you have to do when you
- 0:39Speaker 1: have show sponsors is you have to do you have
- 0:42Speaker 1: to record stuff. So what's called a pre roll, a
- 0:44Speaker 1: mid roll, and a post roll usually something like that,
- 0:48Speaker 1: and it Tiff and I were talking about how we
- 0:51Speaker 1: can jump in like this and talk. I'm not saying
- 0:54Speaker 1: it's great, but you know, there's not too many stumbles
- 0:57Speaker 1: or stutters, and we're not restarting, and we're not fucking
- 0:59Speaker 1: up work. To me, not going oh, but then when
- 1:02Speaker 1: I've got to record a thirty second ad, which is
- 1:05Speaker 1: literally a script, how I can fuck it up? Thirteen
- 1:08Speaker 1: times in thirty seconds. When I've got the words written
- 1:11Speaker 1: in front of me and Melissa, I can't even say
- 1:15Speaker 1: what I said. It's probably a bit too offensive. But
- 1:17Speaker 1: let's just say that I fucked up. I fucked up
- 1:20Speaker 1: like about three easy sentences fourteen times in a row,
- 1:24Speaker 1: and I forgot on the recording, just unleashed this mouthful
- 1:29Speaker 1: of expletives, which she then sent to me as a
- 1:33Speaker 1: bit of an audio real just those words. So I'm
- 1:37Speaker 1: hoping she doesn't use that sometime in the future to
- 1:39Speaker 1: leverage some kind of lawsuit or HR complaint against me,
- 1:44Speaker 1: because she'd probably win.
- 1:47Speaker 2: And I apologize to the listeners, because if I could
- 1:50Speaker 2: get my hands on it, I would, I would make
- 1:52Speaker 2: a reel and you guys could all be in on it.
- 1:54Speaker 2: But I dare say that's not gonna no my table.
- 2:01Speaker 1: Fortunately she's a little bit like me, and that she's
- 2:05Speaker 1: amused by ses. She thought it was the funniest thing ever,
- 2:08Speaker 1: because I just got frustrated, and then I just set
- 2:11Speaker 1: all this shit that had and then I just read.
- 2:14Speaker 1: But I get frustrated. Then I go and I'm back
- 2:18Speaker 1: midwhile eighteen today, where so I go from completely in
- 2:23Speaker 1: the zone to completely like kid in the sandpit throwing
- 2:27Speaker 1: his dummy in about four seconds and back. But it
- 2:30Speaker 1: is amazing how And we were talking about before. One
- 2:35Speaker 1: of the things I have to do and you have
- 2:36Speaker 1: to do sometimes is if I'm going to speak at
- 2:40Speaker 1: a conference, sometimes the conference organizes all the company will
- 2:45Speaker 1: send me a message say, hey, Craig, could you do
- 2:48Speaker 1: like a forty five second video saying hi to everyone
- 2:50Speaker 1: who's coming to the conference, and just a quick snapshot
- 2:53Speaker 1: of what you're going to talk about, and that forty
- 2:57Speaker 1: five second talking to camera video. I was talking to
- 3:00Speaker 1: camera now. Although most people don't see this bit, it
- 3:05Speaker 1: takes me a half hour. I don't know why when
- 3:08Speaker 1: you just change the context a bit. I don't know
- 3:11Speaker 1: if it's because I'm a perfectionist. And then I've got
- 3:15Speaker 1: to go back and listen to it, and I go,
- 3:18Speaker 1: I sound ridiculous, But the amount of times I fucked
- 3:21Speaker 1: that up is unbelievable.
- 3:23Speaker 2: It's a whole different thing. I just told you. I
- 3:26Speaker 2: had to record a two minute video specific to what
- 3:31Speaker 2: I needed to say, and all day, all day hours
- 3:37Speaker 2: from probably late morning until late afternoon, and then I
- 3:42Speaker 2: put it together, and then I went and I'm not
- 3:44Speaker 2: using that. That sounds ridiculous. And I did get up
- 3:46Speaker 2: this morning and do it again another couple of hours.
- 3:49Speaker 2: I think I got it. But it's a completely different
- 3:54Speaker 2: because somewhere in your head there is the words and
- 3:58Speaker 2: it's not just coming from nowhere, and that's distracting.
- 4:03Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm with you. I used to work on Channel
- 4:06Speaker 1: ten for a minute, right and every now and then
- 4:08Speaker 1: I did what's called an OB that's an outside broadcast.
- 4:12Speaker 1: And I remember one year I fuck. I think I
- 4:15Speaker 1: was at the Melbourne Show and I had to talk
- 4:19Speaker 1: off auto Q. So there's this hole and I fucked
- 4:24Speaker 1: it up like three times in a row, and I said,
- 4:27Speaker 1: can I just do it? And they're like, oh no,
- 4:29Speaker 1: because they thought, oh, you couldn't possibly do it without
- 4:32Speaker 1: an auto Q. I'm like, I could absolutely do it
- 4:35Speaker 1: with an auto Q without an auto Q, and then
- 4:38Speaker 1: they just went all right, well let's see, and I
- 4:40Speaker 1: just did it and they're like, how the fuck did
- 4:42Speaker 1: you do that? Well, because I don't have to read
- 4:44Speaker 1: something like when I'm reading, it's not organic, it's not
- 4:49Speaker 1: me like I know what I'm talking about. And also
- 4:52Speaker 1: when I used to do in studio stuff, they would
- 4:55Speaker 1: want to send me. Let's say we were talking about
- 4:59Speaker 1: like we're going to talk about productivity and efficiency, right,
- 5:03Speaker 1: you didn't know that until three minutes ago. And I've
- 5:06Speaker 1: written no notes. I just want to talk about it
- 5:08Speaker 1: because I think it's irrelevant. So I've got zero notes,
- 5:11Speaker 1: so it could be shit, right. But they every week
- 5:15Speaker 1: that I was on Channel ten, they wanted to send
- 5:18Speaker 1: me the questions in advance that the hosts would ask me.
- 5:23Speaker 1: And I'm like, no, They're like, and I said, and
- 5:26Speaker 1: if you do, I won't read them, and they got
- 5:29Speaker 1: cranky and I said, I am like, unless they're asking
- 5:33Speaker 1: me about how to run the fucking space program or
- 5:37Speaker 1: you know, something that's not in my wheelhouse, let's just
- 5:40Speaker 1: have a conversation, because that's when I'm at my best.
- 5:44Speaker 1: Ergo nearly two thousand episodes of a podcast and twenty
- 5:47Speaker 1: years in radio and all of those bits and pieces,
- 5:50Speaker 1: and you thousand episodes of your show, and probably a
- 5:53Speaker 1: thousand episodes of this show. And that's not to say
- 5:57Speaker 1: we're good, bad, better, or worse, but there are some
- 6:00Speaker 1: things where and it's different for different people. But this
- 6:03Speaker 1: whole idea of you know, the the best way to
- 6:06Speaker 1: do it is to do like even you think about
- 6:09Speaker 1: the best way to do a podcast, and I think
- 6:13Speaker 1: I can say this without stepping on any toes. So
- 6:17Speaker 1: the boys from Max's Max's Supplements that I had on
- 6:20Speaker 1: the other day, they're starting a podcast, and we got
- 6:24Speaker 1: together and had a meeting and they just want They
- 6:27Speaker 1: just wanted my input and their ideas. Some of their
- 6:32Speaker 1: ideas were great, some of them not so great. Obviously
- 6:35Speaker 1: they don't have any experience in that space. Just like
- 6:37Speaker 1: if I was starting a supplement sports supplement company, I'd go,
- 6:41Speaker 1: here's how I want to do it, and they'd shake
- 6:42Speaker 1: their head and say, don't be a fuck with that's terrible, right,
- 6:45Speaker 1: I go, okay. But just the way that people think that,
- 6:50Speaker 1: for example, what would make a good podcast is they
- 6:54Speaker 1: don't think so much like, Okay, let's say we've got
- 6:59Speaker 1: somebody who's got a big profile perhaps or in a
- 7:03Speaker 1: certain field. There a Michael Jordan, you know, or a
- 7:08Speaker 1: Serena Williams, like they're a star in their field. What
- 7:12Speaker 1: people don't get is they could be fucking diabolically bad
- 7:15Speaker 1: on a podcast Like that doesn't mean because they can
- 7:19Speaker 1: hit a tennis ball or run fast, or jump high
- 7:21Speaker 1: or lift heavy shit, or they've built a million dollar
- 7:24Speaker 1: company or billion dollar company, or because they're super good
- 7:28Speaker 1: looking or that doesn't mean that they're going to be
- 7:31Speaker 1: a great communicator in this format, and that's what you need.
- 7:34Speaker 1: You know, can you create rapport, can you tell a story?
- 7:37Speaker 1: Can you talk without stumbling? Can you be interesting and curious?
- 7:41Speaker 1: And can you can you engage an audience? Can you
- 7:43Speaker 1: grow it? And they're like oh yeah, yeah, like all
- 7:46Speaker 1: these things that because everyone's like, oh, we've got these
- 7:49Speaker 1: microphones and we've got this room to use and we've
- 7:53Speaker 1: got this tech where and all of that stuff matters.
- 7:56Speaker 1: But it's like saying, we've got a Formula one car,
- 8:00Speaker 1: so we've got this fucking amazing car, but we've got
- 8:02Speaker 1: someone who's been driving for three weeks. Well it doesn't
- 8:06Speaker 1: matter what, you know. It's like we've got the Grand
- 8:07Speaker 1: Prix coming up this weekend, doesn't matter. It doesn't matter
- 8:11Speaker 1: if you're in a Ferrari, if Craig Harper is driving it,
- 8:14Speaker 1: you're not fucking winny, you know what I mean. Like
- 8:18Speaker 1: it's like, yeah, cool, okay, so you've got all the
- 8:21Speaker 1: resources for a good podcast, but you know he or
- 8:25Speaker 1: she that's going to sit on the mic and host it.
- 8:27Speaker 1: So it's trying to understand. I guess you know that
- 8:31Speaker 1: the like what is going to make something work? And that, Yeah,
- 8:35Speaker 1: you and me, I think if we're not freestyling, it's
- 8:40Speaker 1: probably not our natural habitat.
- 8:41Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 8:42Speaker 2: I think when I started, my biggest gift was impatience.
- 8:46Speaker 2: I just want to do I'm excited. I just want
- 8:48Speaker 2: to get started, so I just do it. I'm like,
- 8:51Speaker 2: all right, let's go. And then I think it was
- 8:53Speaker 2: three months down the track around you and said, Okay,
- 8:57Speaker 2: well how do I get better?
- 9:00Speaker 1: What's about?
- 9:00Speaker 2: I didn't even know what it was. I'm like, what
- 9:01Speaker 2: should I focus on now? Because it's like I just
- 9:03Speaker 2: got to get started and find my feet and I
- 9:06Speaker 2: don't really have time to be thinking about questions or
- 9:10Speaker 2: structure or I'm just excited.
- 9:12Speaker 1: Yeah, and look, I don't think that's the worst way
- 9:16Speaker 1: to go. I think for someone like Max's who they've
- 9:19Speaker 1: got a brand, the existing business and profile, it's different
- 9:24Speaker 1: to Tiffy, who's going, fuck, I'll figure it out. Like
- 9:29Speaker 1: I would steer nobody to my first one hundred episodes
- 9:33Speaker 1: if someone said I'm going to go back and start
- 9:35Speaker 1: from the start, In fact, people do say that I'm
- 9:37Speaker 1: going to start for episode one, I'm like, please don't.
- 9:40Speaker 1: That's how I please don't, please don't. I'm pretty sure
- 9:43Speaker 1: I was fucking horrible, right, But that so it's a
- 9:47Speaker 1: bit of both. It's what we're spoken about, but it's
- 9:49Speaker 1: also well, you can't get good at what you don't do,
- 9:54Speaker 1: you know, so if like you and I go box tonight,
- 9:57Speaker 1: like if you and I were fighting in a car park,
- 10:00Speaker 1: I'm going to win, But if you and I are
- 10:02Speaker 1: fighting in a boxing ring, I'm going to get my
- 10:04Speaker 1: ass handed to me on a fucking platter because I'm
- 10:08Speaker 1: not a boxer.
- 10:10Speaker 2: But you know what, you just made me think of
- 10:12Speaker 2: that whole the starting and being shit, because I listened
- 10:16Speaker 2: back and cringe now, But I remember in that moment,
- 10:20Speaker 2: and obviously there's a lot of people that knew me
- 10:22Speaker 2: supporting me. But the podcast took off and people I
- 10:26Speaker 2: remember people saying, I don't normally love podcasts, but I
- 10:29Speaker 2: love yours. I love this, I love there was an energy,
- 10:32Speaker 2: the energy or the enthusiasm or the style of it
- 10:35Speaker 2: landed with people. So even though I was shit and clunky,
- 10:39Speaker 2: and I listened back now and I'm like, oh my goodness,
- 10:42Speaker 2: there was there's something in it that people tuned into weirdly.
- 10:49Speaker 1: Yeah, but no, well you're good. You're good at it,
- 10:51Speaker 1: and I'm not pissing in your pocket because you and
- 10:53Speaker 1: I both know. It's like there are things you're great at,
- 10:55Speaker 1: things that you're better at than they used to be,
- 10:57Speaker 1: and things that need work, just like there with me,
- 11:00Speaker 1: just like there is with everyone you know. But that
- 11:05Speaker 1: ability to be able to just sit there and riff
- 11:10Speaker 1: where I think for some people, like ironically this is
- 11:13Speaker 1: going to sound contradictory and counterintuitive, but it's almost like
- 11:17Speaker 1: not quite, but it's almost like the more you get
- 11:21Speaker 1: your mind out of the way and you just you
- 11:24Speaker 1: forget that this is a podcast, You forget that people
- 11:27Speaker 1: are critiquing this and tuning out or tuning in or
- 11:31Speaker 1: and of course you don't totally forget, of course you
- 11:33Speaker 1: have that awareness. But the energy that I try and
- 11:35Speaker 1: bring in is that while I'm chatting with Tiff, other
- 11:39Speaker 1: people are going to listen to my chat with Tiff,
- 11:41Speaker 1: and I'm conscious of that, but you know when people
- 11:45Speaker 1: come in and you can like I've got a podcast
- 11:48Speaker 1: today with a guy I don't know who's interviewed a
- 11:51Speaker 1: few good people. It's at one o'clock, doesn't matter. I
- 11:53Speaker 1: can't remember his name. He'll come to me later. I
- 11:56Speaker 1: wouldn't mention it, but I don't know. It could be good,
- 11:59Speaker 1: it could be it could be brilliant, it could be
- 12:01Speaker 1: the worst thing, it could be the best thing. But
- 12:04Speaker 1: I've been on podcast where I've stopped people who are
- 12:07Speaker 1: new to podcasting, or I've at least asked, can we
- 12:11Speaker 1: hit the pause button for a moment? And I just
- 12:14Speaker 1: I which I don't know if it's appropriate or not,
- 12:17Speaker 1: but I absolutely know that what we're in the middle
- 12:20Speaker 1: of is going to be shit. I don't say that,
- 12:23Speaker 1: but I go, can I, as someone who's done over
- 12:26Speaker 1: two thousand podcasts in different you know, can I can
- 12:30Speaker 1: I offer an idea? And they're like sure, And I go,
- 12:33Speaker 1: can you throw away your fucking list of questions? Because
- 12:37Speaker 1: what they do is they go question one, Craig, tell
- 12:41Speaker 1: me about tell me about your journey and the fitness industry.
- 12:44Speaker 1: And I go and I'm halfway through that. Oh, I'm
- 12:46Speaker 1: into that, and it's like we're really it's getting interesting,
- 12:49Speaker 1: and they're you know, they're engaged, and I think I'm
- 12:52Speaker 1: sharing thoughts and ideas and then they're like, ah cool,
- 12:56Speaker 1: and you grew up in Latro Valley do you know me?
- 13:00Speaker 1: It's like, uh, yes, yes I did.
- 13:04Speaker 2: It's hard, Yes I did. That, isn't it?
- 13:06Speaker 1: Yeah? Yes, sure, that's great. Also you do corporate speaking.
- 13:11Speaker 1: I'm like, fuck, dude, there's no flow here. Like this
- 13:15Speaker 1: is like people are like, what it's like, let's drive
- 13:19Speaker 1: down this highway. No, let's turn left right now, let's
- 13:22Speaker 1: park in this car park, let's jump in this river. No,
- 13:25Speaker 1: let's eat fairy flass. What it's like so fucking messy
- 13:28Speaker 1: and disjointed because they're not present. They're not present, so
- 13:33Speaker 1: have your questions or have your talking points. But like
- 13:37Speaker 1: if I'm interviewing, say doctor Bill Sullivan, right, who's the
- 13:42Speaker 1: molecular biologist, fucking genius, right, I will have Let's say
- 13:47Speaker 1: we're talking about you know, vaccination, vaccines or whatever, and
- 13:51Speaker 1: I know fuck all about that. So and doctor Bill's
- 13:55Speaker 1: a genius and I'm not. And he's he's a professor
- 13:58Speaker 1: and I'm not. And I go, well, I'm well, and
- 14:00Speaker 1: truly this is an area that he's the guru. I'm
- 14:02Speaker 1: just the blug. So I'll jot down ten talking points
- 14:08Speaker 1: that I think are interesting for me and relevant for
- 14:12Speaker 1: hopefully a lot of people. But more often than not,
- 14:17Speaker 1: seven or eight of those talking points or questions will
- 14:19Speaker 1: not even get used because off the back of the
- 14:23Speaker 1: first thing we talk about, we just flow organically into
- 14:27Speaker 1: a bunch of other things. And I realize in the
- 14:30Speaker 1: moment that if I interject and go talking point three,
- 14:35Speaker 1: it's going to fuck up what's happening in real time.
- 14:39Speaker 1: But you have to have the confidence and the awareness.
- 14:42Speaker 1: And I think, by the way, I'm not saying so
- 14:46Speaker 1: be more like Craig, because I fucked that. That's why
- 14:48Speaker 1: I said, don't listen to the first hundred episodes. It
- 14:50Speaker 1: just takes you a while before you go, oh, this
- 14:54Speaker 1: is exactly like having a coffee with somebody and being
- 15:00Speaker 1: present and you don't have to fix anything, you don't
- 15:02Speaker 1: have to solve anything, you don't have to reveal any
- 15:06Speaker 1: fucking secrets of the universe. You just might have a
- 15:10Speaker 1: really interesting dialogue and that's good to listen to.
- 15:14Speaker 2: I've always thought about the second conversations I have with
- 15:18Speaker 2: someone and always get a bit, oh, how do I
- 15:21Speaker 2: make because I'll go everywhere, how do I make this different?
- 15:24Speaker 2: That had one recently. But then I was like, I
- 15:26Speaker 2: haven't spoke to this guy for at least two maybe
- 15:29Speaker 2: three years. I'm a different person. People probably haven't heard
- 15:34Speaker 2: the first conversation. This one's going to be different. And
- 15:37Speaker 2: it was the first time. I didn't give any thought
- 15:39Speaker 2: to even going back and just having a quick listen
- 15:41Speaker 2: to what I might have talked about.
- 15:43Speaker 1: Yes, yes, and I think that it's an interesting thing.
- 15:48Speaker 1: I think it depends what the skill or the task
- 15:52Speaker 1: or the requirement is. But I think some things really
- 15:55Speaker 1: need a lot of preparation, and some things don't.
- 16:00Speaker 3: You know.
- 16:00Speaker 1: It's like when I did my four academic milestones for
- 16:04Speaker 1: my PhD. I it's all preparation. It's not my wheelhouse,
- 16:11Speaker 1: it's not my natural habitat. I'm talking about high level
- 16:15Speaker 1: complex research data science. I'm being assessed by four people
- 16:21Speaker 1: that are infinitely smarter than I am, more qualified than
- 16:25Speaker 1: I am in this space, and so it's different. So
- 16:29Speaker 1: that situation requires something different. But I'm not there to
- 16:34Speaker 1: entertain anyone or tell a story. I'm there to get
- 16:37Speaker 1: through a situation to achieve an academic outcome, right, So
- 16:42Speaker 1: that's totally different. But if one of your jobs is
- 16:47Speaker 1: you know whether or not you are a teacher or
- 16:48Speaker 1: a leader, or a manager, or a podcaster or a
- 16:53Speaker 1: parent or I would think, you know, if you said
- 16:57Speaker 1: if I said, do you want to connect optimally or
- 16:59Speaker 1: sub everyone says wow, optimal, optimal connection and communication, And
- 17:06Speaker 1: you know, like I pay attention as you do. I'm
- 17:09Speaker 1: sure so the feedback and it's funny how I've had people,
- 17:12Speaker 1: and I won't say who, but really big names where
- 17:16Speaker 1: I thought this is going to go nuts because we've
- 17:19Speaker 1: got a big name, and people like, yeah, it was okay, Yeah,
- 17:23Speaker 1: he was good, she was good. I'm like, oh, and
- 17:25Speaker 1: then I do one on an episode about how to
- 17:29Speaker 1: have an awesome shit and it goes nuts. You know,
- 17:34Speaker 1: optimal pooing. I think that's the name of an episode
- 17:37Speaker 1: of some and it's like I got more and I
- 17:41Speaker 1: know this isn't Some people have just put down their
- 17:43Speaker 1: fucking chikeeto. I'm sorry, chocolate her Claire. They're like, I'll
- 17:50Speaker 1: get to that later, if at all, But do you know,
- 17:53Speaker 1: like it's like the things that you think, are you okay,
- 17:56Speaker 1: you look like you're about spewed, oh yeah about the
- 17:58Speaker 1: corn in it. But the things that you think you know,
- 18:03Speaker 1: like I'm going to wheel out this person that wrote
- 18:05Speaker 1: this book that sold millions of copies, and he or
- 18:09Speaker 1: she and will promote them and we'll go, hey, everyone,
- 18:12Speaker 1: we've got this person on in the next couple of days.
- 18:15Speaker 1: And then the day comes and you put up the
- 18:16Speaker 1: podcast and the numbers are exactly the same. It's like
- 18:20Speaker 1: there's no listeners, there's no more engagement. And then there
- 18:24Speaker 1: are other times where I do something and something with
- 18:27Speaker 1: you perhaps or something solo, and Melissa will say to
- 18:30Speaker 1: me at the end after we've recorded something as like
- 18:34Speaker 1: after this, she will definitely go, how's the podcast with Tiff?
- 18:38Speaker 1: And I always go good, or I'll go, yeah, it
- 18:41Speaker 1: was a six or it was a nine, or you know,
- 18:45Speaker 1: because but sometimes the things that I think are a
- 18:49Speaker 1: six or a seven for the audience, there are nine
- 18:53Speaker 1: and vice versa.
- 18:54Speaker 2: Were you personally, who was Who are your favorites? Who
- 18:59Speaker 2: are the episodes where you loved either the person or
- 19:01Speaker 2: the content the most.
- 19:03Speaker 1: Well, I'm not just saying this because it's kind of convenient,
- 19:07Speaker 1: but I loved chatting with Johnny Ruffo rip God bless
- 19:11Speaker 1: him right, because I just loved his energy. And I mean,
- 19:16Speaker 1: we've even got a little real of you and he
- 19:18Speaker 1: and I and at the end he says, you know what,
- 19:21Speaker 1: this has been my favorite interview. And I'm like that
- 19:25Speaker 1: still that that nearly, that nearly makes me cry, right,
- 19:28Speaker 1: because here's this guy who you know, for a period
- 19:33Speaker 1: of time was a really big deal and still a
- 19:36Speaker 1: big deal to us. And I mean as a human,
- 19:38Speaker 1: you know, but in terms of media, and he had
- 19:41Speaker 1: lots of attention, and you know, certainly not the biggest
- 19:44Speaker 1: name we've had on this show by a million miles.
- 19:46Speaker 1: But I loved. I loved chatting with him. I loved
- 19:52Speaker 1: and it wasn't a brilliant podcast, but I fucking loved
- 19:56Speaker 1: chatting with doctor Gladys McCreary. Oh yeah, So I had
- 20:00Speaker 1: this lady on Everybody. She's a Hunt was one hundred
- 20:03Speaker 1: and three. She's since passed away. I think she passed
- 20:06Speaker 1: away at one hundred and four, but at about even
- 20:11Speaker 1: at one hundred and two, she was still advised. She
- 20:13Speaker 1: wasn't working as a doctor, but she was still consulting people.
- 20:17Speaker 1: She was still advising people on the phone and still
- 20:20Speaker 1: sharp as attack. And I'm sitting there and I'm thinking,
- 20:24Speaker 1: I'm I think I was sixty when I interviewed her,
- 20:27Speaker 1: so maybe a year ago, maybe fifty nine, right, And
- 20:29Speaker 1: I'm like, I'm old as fuck, and she's she's four
- 20:33Speaker 1: and a half decades older than me, and no apparent
- 20:39Speaker 1: signs of cognitive decline or and like lovely energy and
- 20:45Speaker 1: still walks like walked with a walker, walked with a frame,
- 20:48Speaker 1: but still up and about walking. She's not in a wheelchair.
- 20:52Speaker 1: Like her body worked, her brain worked, and it was
- 20:56Speaker 1: just and you know someone who like she couldn't give
- 20:59Speaker 1: a fuck about podcast or technology or she was just
- 21:03Speaker 1: talking to a man in Australia and she was in
- 21:05Speaker 1: the States, And yeah, I loved it. I love that.
- 21:08Speaker 1: Who else? I mean, I tell you who else I
- 21:10Speaker 1: really liked. Who is kind of a big deal and
- 21:16Speaker 1: he is, Oh Mark Randolph. He's the guy, the guy
- 21:21Speaker 1: that started with another guy. He created Netflix. And I
- 21:24Speaker 1: remember getting him. I don't know, I few on the least,
- 21:27Speaker 1: so one of you got him, you did well done.
- 21:30Speaker 1: And I remember I remember thinking, fucking hell, I'm talking
- 21:34Speaker 1: to the guy who created Netflix, and who's a best
- 21:39Speaker 1: part of a billionaire. I don't know how much money
- 21:40Speaker 1: he's got, but I'm going to go with heaps and
- 21:43Speaker 1: I thought, Wow, that's a good get for the show,
- 21:46Speaker 1: like because part of me is like, ah, this is
- 21:47Speaker 1: good for us because we've got a big name and bus,
- 21:50Speaker 1: so there's that whole commercial thing. But then when I
- 21:53Speaker 1: got to talk to him, I'm like, oh, I really
- 21:56Speaker 1: like this. Forget what he's done or who he is.
- 21:59Speaker 1: I mean, that's cool, like the fact that he created
- 22:01Speaker 1: this thing that everyone in the world knows about pretty
- 22:03Speaker 1: much and most of us use pretty much. He's just
- 22:09Speaker 1: a good human and a what a great because he
- 22:13Speaker 1: was about my age, and I don't know if his
- 22:16Speaker 1: operating systems changed, but when I spoke to him, he
- 22:20Speaker 1: worked two days a week and he didn't work five
- 22:23Speaker 1: days a week, so he would work two big days.
- 22:27Speaker 1: I think he said he worked like twelve fourteen hours
- 22:29Speaker 1: two days a week, but he had five days a
- 22:32Speaker 1: week off. And I remember back then, I'm thinking, so
- 22:35Speaker 1: there's fifty two weeks in a year. Fifty two times
- 22:38Speaker 1: five is two hundred and sixty days. Two hundred and
- 22:42Speaker 1: sixty days a year. He doesn't work. I'm like, this
- 22:45Speaker 1: is a fucking good model, right, But it's not a
- 22:49Speaker 1: good model if you're sitting at home on the couch
- 22:51Speaker 1: twiddling your thumbs. But I go, so what do you
- 22:53Speaker 1: do on the five days? I spend them with my children.
- 22:56Speaker 1: I spend them with my grandchildren. We go surfing, we
- 23:00Speaker 1: go hiaking, we got kayaking, we go cross country hiking,
- 23:05Speaker 1: mountain riding. Because he lives near the wilderness, I'm like, yeah,
- 23:09Speaker 1: this dude has got it sorted. So when he works,
- 23:12Speaker 1: he works, and nobody's allowed to contact him on the
- 23:15Speaker 1: five days unless it's a catastrophe. You know. So I
- 23:20Speaker 1: just got out of like I thought I'd talk to
- 23:22Speaker 1: this business guru, but he ended up being more of
- 23:25Speaker 1: a life guru. He was almost more of a philosopher
- 23:28Speaker 1: than any kind of commercial genius that I expected to get.
- 23:33Speaker 2: My favorite trait in people, and I recognized this in
- 23:38Speaker 2: a recent guest I had on his humility is And
- 23:41Speaker 2: when I asked you about your favorite guest, I was
- 23:44Speaker 2: running through my mind about the ones I recall that
- 23:47Speaker 2: I loved and everyone that I can recall, I remember
- 23:52Speaker 2: having an inter a personal interaction at the end where
- 23:55Speaker 2: we connected and they were grateful or they were they
- 24:00Speaker 2: had humility, And I was like, Oh, that's what, Like,
- 24:03Speaker 2: that's a lesson in life, right, How do you want
- 24:06Speaker 2: to make an impact on anyone, just walk into the
- 24:09Speaker 2: room with some humility. Yeah, are the ones I remember.
- 24:13Speaker 1: When I spoke to Mark at the end, You're exactly right.
- 24:16Speaker 1: That's a good point. That is a really good point.
- 24:19Speaker 1: It's like what happens outside the interview that often has
- 24:22Speaker 1: the most impact. And I got off and I went,
- 24:25Speaker 1: I think I said to him something like, I mean
- 24:28Speaker 1: this in the nicest possible way. You're not at all
- 24:31Speaker 1: what I expected. And I go, I want to be
- 24:34Speaker 1: your friend, like I want to hang out. And I said,
- 24:37Speaker 1: I know we can't, and I know. He goes, we
- 24:39Speaker 1: can be friends, and I go, I can't remember where
- 24:44Speaker 1: he lives, like Colorado or something. And I'm like, if
- 24:46Speaker 1: I ever come there, can I visit you. He's like,
- 24:48Speaker 1: of course you can stay. I'm like, fuck, yeah, like
- 24:51Speaker 1: such a good which was maybe he was just being nice,
- 24:54Speaker 1: but and my last one. And I'll shut up after
- 24:57Speaker 1: this and let you go wherever you want to go.
- 25:00Speaker 1: But just thinking, I don't know if you remember. I
- 25:04Speaker 1: don't know if you I don't think you were on it,
- 25:06Speaker 1: or maybe you edit it or not. But this beautiful
- 25:11Speaker 1: old dude called Professor Amid Goswami yep, and he was
- 25:16Speaker 1: like a professor of theoretical physics, and fucking we spoke
- 25:21Speaker 1: about quantum theory and the intersection of quantum theory and
- 25:26Speaker 1: physics and spirituality, and I'm like, this, fuck, I'm more.
- 25:32Speaker 1: I literally said, like, we've been talking for about eight minutes,
- 25:36Speaker 1: and I honestly thought to myself, and this is not
- 25:39Speaker 1: even me being self deprecating. I was just out of
- 25:42Speaker 1: my depth. I was so out of my depth. I'm like,
- 25:46Speaker 1: he thinks, because he knows I'm doing a PhD, he
- 25:49Speaker 1: thinks I'm smart. And I had to I said to him, professor, professor,
- 25:55Speaker 1: and he goes, yes, Craig, and he's eighty four, right,
- 25:58Speaker 1: And I said, I think I'm too dumb to be
- 26:01Speaker 1: in this conversation. And he laughed and he made me
- 26:04Speaker 1: feel good and told me, you know, basically how smart
- 26:08Speaker 1: I was or whatever, which was just him being nice.
- 26:10Speaker 1: But I remember, just the here's this guy who's clearly
- 26:15Speaker 1: one of the smartest people I've ever spoken to, maybe
- 26:19Speaker 1: in the top five. And he had such beautiful energy
- 26:23Speaker 1: and as you said, zero ego, like he was a
- 26:28Speaker 1: legit genius, like academic intellectual genius. Who had not a
- 26:33Speaker 1: sceric of ego.
- 26:35Speaker 2: Oh blood.
- 26:36Speaker 1: He loved it.
- 26:36Speaker 2: That had such an impact on you because I got
- 26:39Speaker 2: him for you two. And I remember saying, hey, good
- 26:42Speaker 2: luck with this one and saying at the end, there's
- 26:44Speaker 2: no way on inviting him on my show for a conversation.
- 26:48Speaker 2: I was only clinging by listening by a threat.
- 26:52Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 26:53Speaker 2: I love knowing how hard that was.
- 26:56Speaker 1: But I think also, like, isn't it though, where you go,
- 27:00Speaker 1: where you grow, like you go. I know we've spoken
- 27:03Speaker 1: so many times about being the dumbest in the room.
- 27:07Speaker 1: Will go be the dumbest in the room, be the worst,
- 27:10Speaker 1: be the weakest, be the white belt, be the fucking
- 27:13Speaker 1: be inadequate, be insufficient, be all of that, and be Okay,
- 27:17Speaker 1: guess what in this room with these people I'm speaking
- 27:20Speaker 1: about literal or metaphoric room, I'm the least qualified, the
- 27:25Speaker 1: least capable, the least whatever. And that is okay because
- 27:29Speaker 1: this is probably the room I will grow in the most.
- 27:33Speaker 2: And you always talk about dragging people up, and it's
- 27:36Speaker 2: like meeting people where they're at. So when you have
- 27:38Speaker 2: a conversation with him compared to when he has conversations
- 27:41Speaker 2: with other people that are probably at his academic peak. Yes,
- 27:46Speaker 2: the conversation is different. I wouldn't understand it. At least
- 27:49Speaker 2: it becomes something where you can ask the questions that
- 27:52Speaker 2: everyone listening is like, what what is that?
- 27:55Speaker 1: Yes? Yes, And I think like a big part of
- 27:59Speaker 1: your job and my job is to try to talk
- 28:04Speaker 1: about stuff which can be you know, complicated or you know,
- 28:09Speaker 1: confusing or hard to explain or dissect in a way
- 28:12Speaker 1: that makes sense to as many people as possible and
- 28:16Speaker 1: is relevant. Like I think this conversation. I could be wrong,
- 28:21Speaker 1: but I think this conversation is relevant to most people
- 28:24Speaker 1: in some way because we're all got to build connection
- 28:27Speaker 1: and a pool. We've all got to be around other
- 28:29Speaker 1: people who are not like us. We've all got to
- 28:31Speaker 1: have interactions with people that don't think or speak like us,
- 28:35Speaker 1: which is everyone in the world, by the way, you know,
- 28:38Speaker 1: and then trying to navigate and negotiate that like the
- 28:43Speaker 1: places that we need to go, either literal or metaphoric,
- 28:46Speaker 1: places that we need to go that are foundational to
- 28:53Speaker 1: and integral to our ability to grow and learn and
- 28:58Speaker 1: evolve and get better. Rather than saying I'm going over
- 29:03Speaker 1: here because over here I look good. Over here, I'm
- 29:07Speaker 1: the smartest over here. People respect me, you know, and
- 29:13Speaker 1: it's really easy to do that. I've told this story
- 29:17Speaker 1: once before, but I have this, you know, where you
- 29:21Speaker 1: think you're a bit better than you are for a moment.
- 29:23Speaker 1: That's me. My whole life, right, my whole life. Ironically,
- 29:31Speaker 1: I think sometimes I'm better than Miam and other times
- 29:33Speaker 1: I think I'm dogshit and I have imposter syndrome. But
- 29:36Speaker 1: I did this. I did a gig in Sydney last
- 29:39Speaker 1: year and you might have heard this story, but it
- 29:42Speaker 1: just it was like, you know, God, the universe, someone
- 29:46Speaker 1: just kicking me in the dick. Going there, you go
- 29:48Speaker 1: back down to Earth, anyway, back down to Earth. I
- 29:53Speaker 1: did a gig and I crushed it and it was
- 29:55Speaker 1: really good, he says, humbly. I crushed it and I
- 29:58Speaker 1: got all this kind of people coming up, hugs, handshakes,
- 30:03Speaker 1: you know, photos, the whole shooting match. You know, you're
- 30:06Speaker 1: like a big fish in a small pond. I'm loving myself, sick,
- 30:10Speaker 1: I'm on fire. My confidence is fifteen out of ten.
- 30:14Speaker 1: And then and then I leave the gig to fly
- 30:17Speaker 1: back to Melbourne. I get to one of the lounges
- 30:20Speaker 1: Virgin or whatever, and I'm in there and I'm walking
- 30:24Speaker 1: through with my little man case, just dragging it behind
- 30:27Speaker 1: me like any other corporate and this I don't know,
- 30:33Speaker 1: thirty something lady looks at me, and I thought maybe
- 30:37Speaker 1: she was in the gig, because I thought she was
- 30:39Speaker 1: looking at me and smiling, But she definitely wasn't. She
- 30:42Speaker 1: was looking past me and smiling, probably at some young
- 30:45Speaker 1: stud right, So anyway, I kind of smiled back at
- 30:51Speaker 1: her like some old fucking creepy dude, and she couldn't
- 30:56Speaker 1: have given me more of a disgusting look. Like I
- 31:00Speaker 1: didn't say anything or do anything. I just gave her
- 31:03Speaker 1: a big shit eat a cheshire cat, fucking stupid grin,
- 31:08Speaker 1: like she knows who I am, and I'll acknowledge her
- 31:11Speaker 1: because I'm ace. She didn't know at all who I was.
- 31:16Speaker 1: She just thought I was some fucking geriatric dragging a
- 31:20Speaker 1: case through the Quantis club. And I just went from
- 31:24Speaker 1: fifteen out of ten confidence to one. I got my
- 31:29Speaker 1: little coffee, I'm a little bit of chicken on a
- 31:31Speaker 1: fucking plate, sat in the corner like fucking Larry Loser,
- 31:36Speaker 1: and just tail between my legs, just quietly waited for
- 31:40Speaker 1: my plane to come, I have one never heard this
- 31:42Speaker 1: story before, oh I And it was so funny because
- 31:46Speaker 1: she looked at me with disdain and I wasn't trying
- 31:49Speaker 1: to I wasn't obviously trying to hit on her or
- 31:52Speaker 1: be inappropriate. I just looked at her in a way
- 31:54Speaker 1: which probably looked like I thought I knew her, or
- 31:58Speaker 1: I thought I don't know what she thought, but my
- 32:02Speaker 1: intention definitely wasn't her experience and the look on her face,
- 32:07Speaker 1: she couldn't have been less like what I'd had half
- 32:10Speaker 1: an hour before at the auditorium with all the people,
- 32:13Speaker 1: or an hour before. It was the complete whatever the
- 32:16Speaker 1: opposite of that is, that's what I had. And I went, oh, yeah,
- 32:20Speaker 1: that's right. You are not anyone. You're just You're just
- 32:25Speaker 1: an old guy in the fucking Quantus club, you know,
- 32:30Speaker 1: lining up for a bit of chicken. So settle down,
- 32:35Speaker 1: good though, good though. And then I sat in the
- 32:38Speaker 1: corner and I it was like it was like just
- 32:43Speaker 1: the moment teaching me a bit of awareness and humility.
- 32:47Speaker 1: And I honestly, obviously I didn't honestly think I was
- 32:50Speaker 1: shit hot, but it did. It was a great leveler,
- 32:55Speaker 1: because you know, sometimes for a moment you can feel
- 32:57Speaker 1: like a big deal and you feel oh yeah, yeah,
- 33:00Speaker 1: yeah yeah. And then there are moments when I feel
- 33:05Speaker 1: myself having to I feel my ego like creep up
- 33:12Speaker 1: because someone will go ah, you know, they'll say, oh,
- 33:18Speaker 1: do you do a podcast, don't you? Or yeah, my
- 33:21Speaker 1: son does a podcast too, you know, at my kitchen table,
- 33:24Speaker 1: and I'm like, oh, I want.
- 33:27Speaker 3: To go Ye're not the same, not the same, And
- 33:32Speaker 3: I go, ah, that's great, oh yeah, yeah, he's really
- 33:35Speaker 3: good at you know whatever, And like part of me
- 33:38Speaker 3: wants to go blah blah blah, and I just go
- 33:40Speaker 3: not shut up, pull your head in.
- 33:42Speaker 1: It's so funny though, even I mean, even though this
- 33:47Speaker 1: is the stuff that we talk about. It's like you
- 33:49Speaker 1: can know how to get in shape, but not be
- 33:51Speaker 1: in shape, right because you don't do the work. Yeah,
- 33:55Speaker 1: you can know how to you know, write an essay
- 33:58Speaker 1: or do an exam, but you don't starty, or you
- 34:00Speaker 1: don't do the research, or you don't do the work,
- 34:02Speaker 1: so you don't get it done. And you can understand
- 34:04Speaker 1: how ego works in self esteem and self loathing, and
- 34:07Speaker 1: you can intellectually understand all that shit but still battle
- 34:11Speaker 1: it on a daily basis.
- 34:13Speaker 2: That's what I love at the moment about coaching is
- 34:17Speaker 2: you're always in it. I'm always in it. I'm always
- 34:20Speaker 2: able to reflect and get better and realize where I'm
- 34:24Speaker 2: shit and teach something and learn from what I'm teaching,
- 34:28Speaker 2: or see that I haven't learned from what I'm teaching
- 34:30Speaker 2: and need to.
- 34:32Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, the same same. I did a coaching session.
- 34:36Speaker 1: I want to say her surname, but with a lady
- 34:38Speaker 1: this morning named Melissa, not the Melissa or another Melissa,
- 34:42Speaker 1: And yeah, it's just really shed to me essentially at
- 34:49Speaker 1: the end, we've only done four sessions, and she goes,
- 34:53Speaker 1: she also has a therapist and a bunch has a
- 34:57Speaker 1: old team, right, and she goes, I really like how
- 35:02Speaker 1: it's just freestyle And she didn't say that exactly, but she, yeah,
- 35:07Speaker 1: how how real and raw and like, I will talk
- 35:12Speaker 1: about my shit when it's appropriate, when it kind of
- 35:15Speaker 1: it's relevant to what we're talking about. And I think
- 35:19Speaker 1: that I think when people not that you or I
- 35:22Speaker 1: are the high watermark for success by any means, but
- 35:24Speaker 1: I think when people go, oh, they're doing okay, and
- 35:28Speaker 1: they're fucking idiots, so maybe I can do okay, you know,
- 35:32Speaker 1: or not they're idiots, but their flawed. They've got issues
- 35:35Speaker 1: they're dealing with. And it's like I've said many times,
- 35:39Speaker 1: if I wait until I've got no issues or no
- 35:41Speaker 1: flaws and I've got all my shit together to present,
- 35:46Speaker 1: then well I will never present. I will never do
- 35:48Speaker 1: a podcast. I'll never coach anyone because I'm never going
- 35:53Speaker 1: to be optimal me. I'm going to be hopefully better me.
- 35:56Speaker 1: I'm going to be a kind of improved version of me.
- 36:00Speaker 1: But do I ever do I ever respond poorly? Yes?
- 36:07Speaker 1: Do I get trapped an ego? Or do I waste time?
- 36:10Speaker 1: Or am I inefficient? We were going to talk about that,
- 36:13Speaker 1: but this is how inefficient we are. We didn't even
- 36:17Speaker 1: get around to talking about efficiency and productivity. That's how
- 36:21Speaker 1: fucking bad you and I are.
- 36:23Speaker 2: And I had my notebook ready because I'm focusing on
- 36:26Speaker 2: it a lot lately and I wanted to take notes.
- 36:29Speaker 1: Well, I do have some thoughts about it, So we
