Transcript
- 0:00SPEAKER_00: You're listening to the I Align podcast with Flint Mitchell, where I provide stories, resources, and tools for ambitious builders who are ready to gain control over procrastination, overthinking, and distraction.
- 0:13SPEAKER_00: Welcome.
- 0:14SPEAKER_00: I'm currently overcommitted as far as the number of work hours that I'm capable of putting in are concerned.
- 0:20SPEAKER_00: It puts me in an interesting position to do something that I consider is very special.
- 0:24SPEAKER_00: If you are equally in a place where you feel like when you put effort into one thing, you're falling off track on others.
- 0:30SPEAKER_00: This is probably for you.
- 0:31SPEAKER_00: This is an opportunity to view it as effectively a pop quiz.
- 0:34SPEAKER_00: A pop quiz in class is important, it holds some bearing on your grade, but it's not the overall test.
- 0:41SPEAKER_00: On a math quiz in class, maybe that would test your ability to implement some algorithm.
- 0:46SPEAKER_00: But as we go through this pop quiz in life, we are learning about our capacity to handle the specific emotions that show up when we go through periods of overwhelm.
- 0:55SPEAKER_00: Like I have too many things to do in one moment that I've committed to.
- 0:59SPEAKER_00: For me, it tends to manifest an emotion of anxiety, right?
- 1:03SPEAKER_00: And that's okay.
- 1:03SPEAKER_00: Anxiety isn't a bad thing.
- 1:05SPEAKER_00: It's just emotion that shows up when certain things in my life happen.
- 1:08SPEAKER_00: And the reason I can tell you that with significant ease is that I've gone through so many of these pop quizzes, and afterwards I've looked at my grade and said, What actually happened?
- 1:17SPEAKER_00: What was the emotion I felt when I went through this period?
- 1:19SPEAKER_00: And then how did I handle it?
- 1:21SPEAKER_00: This is where the opportunity of this pop quiz comes up, which is once you look at your grade, how well did I actually do on this pop quiz?
- 1:27SPEAKER_00: You can say, Well, what happened?
- 1:28SPEAKER_00: What did I know?
- 1:29SPEAKER_00: What did I not know?
- 1:30SPEAKER_00: How well did I do this problem?
- 1:32SPEAKER_00: How well did I not do this problem?
- 1:34SPEAKER_00: And so this pop quiz is not there to assess your grade entirely.
- 1:38SPEAKER_00: It's not there to determine your fate in this world.
- 1:40SPEAKER_00: But it is there, if you want to use it, as an opportunity for you to collect a little bit of data about what actually happened with no ego, no emotion attack.
- 1:49SPEAKER_00: When this emotion showed up, how did I handle it?
- 1:51SPEAKER_00: When this level of overload showed up, how did I handle it?
- 1:54SPEAKER_00: What was the behavior I put in place?
- 1:56SPEAKER_00: What were the ways I supported myself through this moment?
- 1:58SPEAKER_00: Did I just grit my teeth?
- 2:00SPEAKER_00: Did that work in this situation?
- 2:01SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 2:01SPEAKER_00: Did it work in this situation?
- 2:03SPEAKER_00: No, clearly not.
- 2:04SPEAKER_00: Maybe I could implement something else.
- 2:05SPEAKER_00: Maybe some form of support, maybe some form of exercise and better nutrition.
- 2:10SPEAKER_00: So after you go through one of these pop quizzes and you look at your grade and you look back and you collect the data and you say, what went right and what went wrong, how can you positively reinforce the positive, the things that went right, and how can you alter the variables associated with things that didn't go right?
- 2:26SPEAKER_00: So look at these moments where you're potentially falling off track or you're going through a difficult experience as a pop quiz that shows you, it demonstrates your capacity to handle that level of overwhelm or that obstacle in this moment.
- 2:38SPEAKER_00: It's not a good thing about you, it's not a bad thing about you, it just is.
- 2:41SPEAKER_00: And it's a moment for you to collect some data, change some variables, and better support yourself.
- 2:45SPEAKER_00: So in the future, when you encounter that obstacle, you will handle it better if you want.
- 2:50SPEAKER_00: I hope you enjoyed that episode.
- 2:52SPEAKER_00: Now, if you've been told your entire life that you're smart and you have potential, but you continue to see yourself not do what you said you would do again and again, and it's made you stop trusting in yourself or that you will ever achieve that potential, I want to help you.
- 3:07SPEAKER_00: Together, you and I will implement a core value-based system that will help you become decisive and focused.
- 3:14SPEAKER_00: I want you to feel the relief from the weight on your shoulders because of the decreased noise in your head.
- 3:20SPEAKER_00: Strength each morning because you trust yourself to turn lost avoidant hours of your life into forward progress.
- 3:27SPEAKER_00: Peace, when you no longer have to hide how you actually spend your time.
- 3:31SPEAKER_00: And finally, pride in yourself when you close your eyes every night before you go to sleep.
- 3:36SPEAKER_00: If that's of interest to you, click the first link in the show notes, fill out the 30-second application, and grab a time on my calendar.
