- 1:00Well, now it's time for today's episode of Yours Truly Johnny Daller,
- 1:06and then after that we'll pick up with doctor Tim Detective. But here now
- 1:11is though Lamar Matter, Part five from Hollywood. It's time now for Johnny
- 1:19Dollar. This is Larry Comstock. Johnny, try mutual insurance. You're out
- 1:25at the Lamar Yeah, Larry. At least crime Lab find out anything more
- 1:27about the stuff from here they took in for examination. Yes, yes,
- 1:30they certainly did. Well. They found traces of that poison pyrodamar on the
- 1:36toothbrush that Thomas Lamar was using just before he got Are you kidding? Oh?
- 1:40No, I need John, not a bit. There's a murder weapon
- 1:42for you, a toothbrush. Larry, send the cops out here. I
- 1:47think I've just about got this case sowed up. Tonight and every weekday Night
- 1:57Bob Bailey and the Transcribed Adventures of the Man with the Action Packed Expense account
- 2:00America's fabulous freelance insurance investigator aust truly Johnny Dollar. Expense accounts submitted by Special
- 2:19Investigator Johnny Dollar, location, South Bend, Indiana to the Universal Adjustment Bureau,
- 2:23Hertford, Connecticut. The following is my final entry of expenses incurred during
- 2:28investigation of the Lamar murder and murder it most certainly was. It was in
- 2:37Lojoya, California, during my so called vacation, that I met, and
- 2:40I must admit, kind of fell for Fannie Lamar. It was from Lahoya
- 2:46that I flew her back to South Bend, Indiana when we both received news
- 2:47of a foster father's sudden death. All the clues I'd been able to dig
- 2:52up seemed to point to one Walter Mars, who had been Lamar's personal secretary
- 2:55and who lived at the Lamar mansion. Is there in the house I found
- 3:00the one book in the world that described the poison Piratedamaran that had killed Thomas
- 3:05rene Lamar. Poison derived from a pretty little yellow flower once raised on an
- 3:09island near Greece. The flower was sudden death in its pollen. Huh,
- 3:15you're Johnny Dollar, aren't you. Harrison? The butler said, you were
- 3:19up here and you must be Walder Morrison. What what are you doing in
- 3:23my room? Let me ask the questions why system, Look, you may
- 3:28as well know it. I'm an insurance investigator, Harrison said, But I
- 3:30don't believe it right here my credentials, I see. But I thought you
- 3:38thought I was just a boyfriend that Ronnie Lamar met in La Joya, and
- 3:40we just came back here with the comforter over the loss of her father.
- 3:44Yes, yes, that's right. What you were wrong, mister her Party.
- 3:46So the main reason I'm here is to find out who murdered Thomas Lamar
- 3:50and why? And I think I found out you had well who, mister
- 3:54Downer. Interesting book you've been reading here, Flora exatica Mediterranean stolen from the
- 4:01Central Library over in Chicago, wasn't it? Yes, yes, it was
- 4:08found a poison in it, didn't you muss pirate Damarn deadly quick and hard
- 4:13to trace, so rare that the chances were pretty good it wouldn't even be
- 4:15recognized. But it was. Where'd you get it? Walter? As you
- 4:20said, I'm talking about the poison, the pirate Damaran that killed Thomas Lamar.
- 4:26Oh no, no, no, you're you're all wrong. Am I
- 4:29who besides Vannie would benefit from the midion and a half insurance on Lamar's life?
- 4:31Well? What made you think that? I know you? Because I
- 4:34know you're married to Vannie. No, you tried to figger your way into
- 4:39Lamar's business, but he wouldn't have it. All your chiseling and conniving and
- 4:42phony stock transactions got you nowhere. So you did the next thing you could
- 4:46think of. You got something on Vannie and forced her to marry you.
- 4:49So you thought you'd at least be sure of a big hunk of the insurance
- 4:51money over my debt. No, look, dall, and maybe I was
- 4:55married to Bonnie but found out about her big gambling debts got her off the
- 4:58hook by some fancy minute relation of her foster father's investments. No doubt threatened
- 5:02to tell him all about it unless she did marry you and thereby guarantee yourself
- 5:05a prosperous future. Oh and you timed the whole thing beautifully when she was
- 5:11emotionally upset over the death of missus Lamar. No, Dolly, you don't
- 5:13know what Kat couldn't wait for him to die on natural death dot mister sure,
- 5:18go ahead, speak up and make it good. I was married to
- 5:25Ronnie. I'm not now sure that's right. I did want to play some
- 5:31Lamar metal products. I thought I could get it by showing mister Lamar how
- 5:35clever I was. Well. Instead of throwing me out, he gave me
- 5:42another chance. I'll be forever grateful to him the turning point in my life.
- 5:48I give you my word, mister Dollar. I've done nothing since that
- 5:51time that's been anything but completely honest and above board pretty speech. No,
- 5:56No, it's true, it's true, I swear it. Nevertheless, you
- 5:59married Vonnie and the whole we're divorced. What it was the only honorable thing
- 6:04I could do. Would you like to see the final papers? Bonnie mailed
- 6:09them to me from Reno before she went to La Joya. You mean she
- 6:14yeah, let me see him right death. Don't try to pull a gun
- 6:18out of them. I said, you still don't believe me, do you?
- 6:27Yeah? Yeah, hmm. Then would you like to tell me who
- 6:31did murder Thomas Omar? I wish to heaven. I knew That's why I
- 6:36got this book, hoping to find some clue as to where the Pirateameron might
- 6:42have come from. But you sneaked this book out of them because I was
- 6:45afraid of the very kind of suspicion that you've shown. I want to know
- 6:47something I'm still showing, and I tell you you're wrong. I ask Bonnie,
- 6:50She'll tell you. Worrishy. Harrison said, you two had gone out
- 6:53together to make arrangements for the funeral. Yes, we did, and we
- 6:56came back together. But when Harrison told her that you were here to see
- 6:59her, she well, she said she'd be back in a few minutes.
- 7:01Where did she go. She's still in the house somewhere, I think,
- 7:05Mason, just what is your relationship with Vonnie? Now? Oh, there
- 7:11never was any love between us. Our marriage was only on paper. The
- 7:16foster daughter of the man to whom I oh so much. It's my duty
- 7:20to do what I can for her in spite of her. Remember what h
- 7:28even to the end, we kept from him any knowledge of her dissipations drinking
- 7:32and gambling. I thought that was all over. She's more deeply in debt
- 7:35now than she's ever been. I'm I'm thankful mister Lamar died, but with
- 7:43the insurance, of course, she'll be able to pay office. Mason,
- 7:45you're a dirty rat, and your accusation isn't very well vaud Are you trying
- 7:47to say that I'm accusing Bonnie of them murder? Oh? There go on
- 8:01this book. According to this the plant from which pirate Damron is derived is
- 8:07next unless somebody somewhere managed to salvage some seas that would then planned exactly where
- 8:13for a purpose killing is found only on a small Grecian island. Night.
- 8:18I wonder if Dmitri would know. Dmitri, what's this sudden switch? Who's
- 8:22Dmitri's the old Gardener's he's here on the estate. Come on, Marson and
- 8:26bring that book. Before going out to the gardener's cottage, I asked Harris
- 8:33and Wherevanni had gone, and he told us he only knew that she was
- 8:35somewhere on the grounds that a car was still on the driveway. I form
- 8:39Larry Comstock again, but he left his office, presumably to come out here,
- 8:43and I called the man I'd talked to earlier at the library. Of
- 8:46course I can. As I told you before, I keep a very close
- 8:50check on the books in that section. Let me see now. Yeah,
- 8:54yes, Flora Exotica Mediterranean has only been out four or five times in the
- 8:58past several years. Once what mister Thomas Thomas Hanley to mister Ralph Cummings,
- 9:05Miss Levon Lamar and thanks. I tried not to show Mars how I felt
- 9:16as we walked out to the cottage, and Dmitry the old gardener could be
- 9:20nothing too nice for mister Lamar. So I always try keep things nice.
- 9:24Yeah, I can see, Dmitry, mister Dollar is here to investigate the
- 9:28circumstances of mister Lamar's death. Invest Oh, I hope you find will do
- 9:35this terrible thing to such a fun I want you to look at this book.
- 9:39Yeah. Did you ever see a flower like that? Oh? Yes,
- 9:45yes? Where in old country in Greece it used to be, but
- 9:48no more you never saw it in this country. No? Yes, well
- 9:54which is it? You should not say, because in old countries against the
- 10:01law, I don't know why, well I do. Why go on to
- 10:03me? But I keep many of my nice seeds anyway, and some of
- 10:09them were for this flower. Yes, you don't mind. It is very
- 10:16pretty flower. Did you ever plant any of them? Oh no, no,
- 10:18not somebody else. She was always so nice to me, funny miss
- 10:24Lamar. Look sir, she even sent me gift on her trip last week.
- 10:31It's a matrix. Look look you call it toilet case. See it
- 10:39have soap and toothbrush and cold dollar teller. Look look that that too brush.
- 10:45I am looking the yellow stain on the bristles the same color as the
- 10:48flower on the steadly plant. So so pretty, she said her father.
- 10:52One of these two, well dollar, I'm sick, sick, frud,
- 10:58so corny and so obvious it would never be noticed. And she was safely
- 11:03a couple of thousand miles away, beyond any possible suspicion when the dmitreaty.
- 11:07Did she plan any of these seeds you gave her? She often planned many
- 11:11cups where show us in the morning. Maybe he's getting pretty dune. Now,
- 11:16now come on, come on, Marson. Knew you must not tell
- 11:20her I show you. She always keep her little garden secret she did not
- 11:26even think. I know. She very sweet girl, yeah, very but
- 11:31now you know. Oh wait, she there now cultivating, cultivating with a
- 11:39shovel. Mtory. Go back to your cottage and stay there. Oh you
- 11:43are, Come on, Marson, she's she's sticking and I think I know
- 11:50why she sees us. Go away, both of you. Stay here.
- 11:56I want to talk to you, Bonnie. What are you doing? And
- 12:01I'm doing it. I burying a little garden that was mine for day,
- 12:09little personal things Johnny that I grew with my own hands for him alone.
- 12:15Now that he's gone, this would be only one more bit of memory.
- 12:20Please leave me, Johnny, to finish before you turn under that little yellow
- 12:26flower here, I'll show you, Johnny, don't touch it here. Source
- 12:31of a poison called piratedamin. How did you know? Look, I know
- 12:35you don't do nobody help me, help you, help you. Johnny would
- 12:45go help with me, but I turned him down and he came out here.
- 12:48I hate you. I hate your boat. Everything would have been all
- 12:52right if you hadn't come along. I hate you. What Johnny million dollars
- 12:58million and a half do you and I couldn't Johnny, faith don't believe me
- 13:13this is one case I wish I'd never seen. I sure you the company
- 13:16are all right. You won't have to pay off a million and a half
- 13:20in insurance. Your gain. For me, I've lost something faith, faith,
- 13:26and I'm sick of the whole thing expense account. I'll land that up
- 13:33later. Right now, I'm going out and get roaring, get some flowers,
- 13:43some clean flowers, and just sit and look at them. Yours truly,
- 13:52Johnny Dollar. Now here's our star to tell you about next week's exciting
- 14:07story. Next week, tell me did you ever wake up from a pleasant
- 14:11dream to find a smoking gun in your hand and two bodies at your feet?
- 14:15Well? I have join us next week and I'll tell you about it.
- 14:18Yours truly, Johnny Dollar, Yours truly, Johnny Dollar. Is starring
- 14:24Bob Bailey, is transcribed in Hollywood. It is produced and directed by Jack
- 14:28Johnstone, who also wrote this week's story. Heard in the cast were Virginia,
- 14:31Greg Laurence Dobkin, Harry Bartel, Eric Snowden, Howard McNair, John
- 14:35Dayner, Gen Tatum, Joseph Kerns, Paul Richards, and Jack Boyles.
- 14:39Musical supervision by Amerigo Marino. Be sure to join us on Monday night at
- 14:43same time in station for another exciting story of yours Truly, Johnny Dollar Roy
- 14:48Rowan speaking welcome Back. There are some mixed thoughts on this here l I
- 15:52kind of saw the solution coming, but that may partially be too due to
- 15:58having heard it before. This one also seemed to have some particularly long interviews
- 16:06with single characters. I think that the big upside of this series is the
- 16:17end for Johnny. I don't think I don't think that Bonnie Lamarar was was
- 16:27really planning some sort of thing about who would investigate the insurance claim. That's
- 16:34probably giving too much credit to planning. For the normal person to plan out
- 16:41a murderer and then to know who exactly is going to investigate it seems hard
- 16:49to hard to swallow. So I think her interest in him, whatever it
- 16:57was, was not tied at all to them murder case. And of course
- 17:02this is the second straight week that he's he's had something like this happened.
- 17:08Though he wasn't romantically involved with the secretary, he had kind of taken from
- 17:17the last week show. He'd kind of taken a protective stance toward her,
- 17:21only to have a sort of betrayal, and uh, you know, I
- 17:26think it felt like just a typical hard boiled fem fatale story until you know,
- 17:33you got to the end of the story and then that last minute turn
- 17:37I thought was brilliant, which a which kind of shows that Johnny will continue
- 17:48to to not let this, you know, what he encounters change him in
- 17:59terms of turning him into somebody who's just totally hard and cynical. He certainly
- 18:03no one's full And I think that what made this happen was that he didn't
- 18:11meet her at the time, you know, during the murder investigation, but
- 18:17before that, I think he would have been more wary during the murder investigation.
- 18:22But we'll see what's ahead for next week. I don't want to let
- 18:26you know that. Coming up next week we have our second serial with a
- 18:33lost episode, this time part two missing. So we'll have parts one in
- 18:37three on Monday, and then we will have another program on Wednesday. Then
- 18:45next Wednesday be The Johnny Fletcher Mysteries, and again Friday, we'll have parts
- 18:48four and five. This week, it's time for us to go to Doctor
- 18:53Tim and today's episode is titled the Second Alarm. This is Doctor Tim detective
- 19:03to bring you by transcription, the Mystery of the second Alarm. Well,
- 19:17the first caller who knocked on the door of my laboratory and consulting room one
- 19:19morning a few weeks ago was a woman in her early thirties. So give
- 19:22her name as i've missed. Hugh a Miller doctor, and I lit the
- 19:26next house, just beyond the vacant lot. Won't you sit down, missus?
- 19:30Thank you? I can told that you're both a doctor and the detective.
- 19:33Yes, you might call it that, but I had known as a
- 19:37rule to take private cases. What did your problem? Well, I have
- 19:40every reason to believe that my husband's father, who lives the US, is
- 19:42well not quite right, if you know what I mean. And in the
- 19:47next place, I think he's hiding a fortune. Afraid I don't quite see
- 19:52you. I thought you might examining him. No, put him away somewhere
- 19:56for his last But that's a matter for a psychiatrist. You'd have to get
- 20:00his consent or else fell out papers in a legal room. No, no,
- 20:03no, no, that's just what I don't want to do. There
- 20:04must be any publicity, you see. What I want is to get him
- 20:08out of the house. Longe wants to make a throw such as his room.
- 20:12He never leaves it, and I'm sure he has thousands and thousands of
- 20:15dollars getting in that room somewhere. I almost caught him several times, but
- 20:21he's too fell, too crafty, missus Miller. But you're proposing is highly
- 20:26irregular, perhaps even criminals. I'll forget what you've told me. Yes.
- 20:33At that moment, there was a disturbance in the hall outside. I recognize
- 20:37the voices of my two friends, Sammy and Jill and Air I've never heard
- 20:40before. Jail is my landlady's daughter, and Sandy's a power. I opened
- 20:44the door and into the room they walked with a policeman grasping each one firmly
- 20:48by the arm. You're the doctor. Yeah, these kids say they're friends
- 20:52of yours. I him, I don't need any harm. We're just having
- 20:56some fun. Got I'll we and all them doesn't fire. The ways in
- 20:59a lot next to it was, and if I hadn't been walking along on
- 21:02my way home, hold on them all and both you kids, officer,
- 21:07I think we both realized how serious setting fires can be. Burn the whole
- 21:11neighborhood down playing with ntches they will well, we didn't mean. However,
- 21:15I can vouch for them if you're home one moment, Officer, I'd like
- 21:18to say that it isn't the first time they've been in trouble for setting fires.
- 21:22Why old I? After all, I've lived on the other side of
- 21:25that lot for several years, and I can figure look of missus Miller in
- 21:29amazement, and I should have been able to see right then what he was
- 21:32getting at, but I didn't. Chill and Sandy don't ordinarily play with fire,
- 21:36and they aren't problems to the neighborhood. I oughtn't know, because we've
- 21:38been friends for a long time and they've given me some mighty valuable help in
- 21:41my cases. Anyway, Ben, a few minutes, Officer Barton had turned
- 21:45them over to my care with a warning. Missus Miller had left after glaring
- 21:49at me with a look of hatred, and Sandy, Jill and I were
- 21:52alone. From their looks, they were sorry kids, and I could tell
- 21:56they were expecting to really catch it this time. There they stood silence and
- 22:02scared. Finally, yea, you got get him with dope baker dopeson.
- 22:08You realize maybe when you see your hands sandy, Ay, it's nothing,
- 22:12it's burnded a little. Still, hand me to serial bandages. M nice,
- 22:17oh, still until I get addressing on that burn, greasy sens and
- 22:22on it. I am not first, I'm going to clean the hand thoroughly
- 22:26to prevent any infection. Ointments and greasy medicines many times are the best means
- 22:30of spreading infection and burns. Of course, it's a very severe burns,
- 22:33certain infections stopping drugs are necessary. I could say at this point, young
- 22:37man, it says you're right now yellow moment. Yes, you're lucky.
- 22:44Ever see a human body with really bad burns on it, the kind you
- 22:47might have had if your clothes had caught on fire on that big and lot.
- 22:49No, not a pretty sight. It can mean months in the hospital,
- 22:53infections so bad to look at it would make you sick at your stomach.
- 22:57Bessings and burn cases often have to be changed down an anesthetic like ether
- 23:02because the pain is so terrible, and you go through more months of operations
- 23:06where skin is taken from unburned parts of your body and grafted to the places
- 23:10where the fire is burned clear down into the muscles. Sometimes you wish you'd
- 23:14died, you'd be scarred forever. Yes, doctors today can save the lives
- 23:18of people who have lost seventy percent of the skin and their bodies with penicillin,
- 23:22with blood transfusions and blood fractions, and with modern hospital care. But
- 23:26believe me, it's the most horrible pain in the world. That's Sandy and
- 23:32burn is dressed. I'll look at it again tomorrow. Above wall, don't
- 23:34break those blisters. We'll cree Docter Kim, how need to dash out to
- 23:38Kim. We'll never play with fire again. About a half hour later,
- 23:56Sandy in Jel had gone to think over what I'd told them, I hope,
- 24:00and before settling down to some chemical tests, I was making connection with
- 24:03the murder case. I happened to glance out of the window. Missus Hugh
- 24:07Miller, whom I had almost forgotten in the excitement, was walking towards her
- 24:10house with a bundle under her arm. It was a rather sizeable package and
- 24:14somewhat odd shape, and I didn't think much about it at the time.
- 24:18Instead, as I worked with my laboratory apparatus, I pondered upon the fantastic
- 24:22story of old mister Miller, her father in law, and the mysterious treasure
- 24:26he was supposed to have hidden in his room. I've talked to him a
- 24:30few times, as neighbors will the summer before. I'd put him down to
- 24:33my mental notebook as perfectly harmless a little queer in the First World War had
- 24:38ended back in nineteen eighteen. He'd been with the Army of Occupation in Germany
- 24:42for a while. He had a pension, and he told me, and
- 24:47I had decided a year or so ago to come live with his son and
- 24:48daughter in law. That was all I knew, except that his health was
- 24:52none too good, and he rarely left his room these days, and hadn't
- 24:56been out of the house and fall. But where this is Hugh Miller had
- 25:00gotten hold of the idea that her father in law was hiding a crazy I
- 25:03couldn't imagine. I wish now I'd taken the trouble to think things through,
- 25:07even talk to the old man. It might have saved a lot of suffering.
- 25:23It was just getting dark when I finished my lab test and glanced out
- 25:27of the windows that faced the Miller house. I loved my eyes and looked
- 25:32twice, for at that moment there burst out of the Miller's back door and
- 25:34apparition wrapped in flame. If it hadn't been to the dreadful scream that wrist
- 25:38on it, I would never recognize that flaming torch as a human being.
- 25:42And one bound. I was outline door, over the fence and running toward
- 25:45the Millers. Sandy and Jill were in front of me. From which direction
- 25:48they came I didn't know. Still, a flame covered creature ran around in
- 25:51circles, and I shouted, Sandy, Jill, stop him, sup him,
- 25:53stop at him, run, break it off that plot line and let
- 25:56off in it. Before I could reach the Miller yard, Sandy and Jill
- 26:00had both made flying tackles of the flaming figure and were rolling him over and
- 26:03over in the dirt, smuggling out the flame with a blanket. The moment
- 26:06I joined them, the thing, for that's the only way to describe it
- 26:08now was still except the moaning sound that came out of his burned and agonized
- 26:14face. Oh Lord, I thought, why will people run when their clothes
- 26:19are on fire? To lie down and smother the flame as their only dalvation?
- 26:23I was giving the man, for it was old mister Miller first date
- 26:26when his daughter in law came shouting out the door. God, I'll bet
- 26:32he hasn't even called a fire to part. But miss Miller went running back
- 26:34into the house, as Jill told me later, and was telephoning when Jill
- 26:37came panning up to her. By this time, the whole neighborhood was gathering
- 26:41around the house, and it seemed like hardly a moment after I turned again
- 26:44with the suffering figure lying on the grass, but the fire engines came charging
- 26:48out, and followed by an ambulance squad. Calm all the rescue apparatus.
- 26:52The fire was quickly put up. It was only after the old man had
- 26:56been put into the ambulance that I hadn't chanced to notice what was going on.
- 27:00The first thing I heard was missus Miller's showing they did it. It
- 27:03was those two kids right there. You know yourself, officer, that you
- 27:07caught them setting fires this morning. But how do you know they did?
- 27:10I saw him running around the corner of the house just after I noticed the
- 27:12race, and I'll testify and caught that they did it. Well, you
- 27:15two kids, I don't know whether you're guilty or not, but I'll have
- 27:18to take it out of the station for question of a Few minutes later,
- 27:30the officer had left with Sandy and Jail. Both of them had thrown me
- 27:33anguished looks, but were bravely holding back their tears. I could have done
- 27:37something, I suppose, but there wasn't time. I had to get into
- 27:41that house as quickly as possible. I was beginning to put two and two
- 27:45together, and I was certain that what I would discover would solve a part
- 27:49of the mystery. At least I knew who had set that fire and why.
- 27:56Whispering a few words into the ear of the fire chief, I saw
- 27:59him not to lead the way into the Miller house while Missus Miller was still
- 28:02talking excitedly with the neighbors. I hoped Missus Miller wouldn't see us go in,
- 28:07or she might destroy the very evidence to prove my case. It was
- 28:11at the door for the old man's room I found the first thing I was
- 28:15looking for, our home fire extinguisher empty. The rug and the bedcothes were
- 28:21burned, and the room was filled with smoke. But aside from this,
- 28:22there was little evidence from the fire. On my hands and knees, I
- 28:26sniffed at the floor, there was an odor of kerosene, but recognized one
- 28:33more thing remained to do. I lifted the phone, dialed a number,
- 28:37waited until there was an answer, and I asked one question, Hello,
- 28:42doctor Tim speaking yes, will you give me the exact time of the first
- 28:48telephone call to report the fire at twelve sixteen East Homont's place? And no,
- 28:53no, not the second. The first thing I did after finding out
- 29:06about those calls was to call the doctor at the hospital. The old man
- 29:10had a chance to live thanks to the pomp way and with Sandy and Jill
- 29:12handled the emergency and modern hospital care medical advances. He had been treated with
- 29:18a new technique discovered during the war, the use of pressurized vasoline, blood
- 29:22transfusions, blood fractions. All the miracles of modern science were being used.
- 29:27Then I hopped into my car and went down to the police station. Two
- 29:32scared kids safely. I know you didn't kid. Then I'm sorry I had
- 29:37to let things go. As far as this, the Willow criminal has been
- 29:41arrested, notcuser. Barden says to tell you he never really believed you set
- 29:44that fire in the first place, but he had to question because of what
- 29:47missus Miller said. Oh, he treated his plow. Then who did do
- 29:51it? Yeah, that's what I want to know. Well, it was
- 29:53a person who called upon me this morning, and I'm afraid she got the
- 29:56idea of how to scare an old man into the skoy using the hiding place
- 30:00for his money. When Officer Barking brought you into the office for starting fires
- 30:03on the vacant lot. Me, missus Miller, I do I should have
- 30:07known when I saw a walk past my window with a fire extinguisher wrapped up.
- 30:11But still I should have known. Well, she meant just to scare
- 30:15the old man, so he grabbed his money out of the hiding place and
- 30:18run. Everything went fine, except missus Miller was too smart. She called
- 30:22the fire department first and then started the fire. I thought the trucks got
- 30:27there too quickly after the first alarm, which was really the second. And
- 30:30gee, I'll bet you put the fire out with the extinguisher almost off so
- 30:33it really wouldn't bring the hot down exactly. And then blamed you two kids,
- 30:37which shows the importance of a good reputation. She almost got you convicted
- 30:41because of the fire this morning. Yeah, hung you up on us.
- 30:45By golly, what about the tain here? No, I guess we won't
- 30:48know the answer intil old mister Miller can talk. There's no trace of it.
- 30:52Should a wise, I've got it right here in my pocket. The
- 30:53old man was clutching it in his hands when he ran out of the hawks.
- 30:56Sandy handed me the remains of some charge banknote. In one corner of
- 31:02each was printed a figure one million, five million, fifty thousand, not
- 31:07dollars, but mark worthless, inflated German marks of thirty years ago, not
- 31:12worth the paper they were printed on. You see, the old man had
- 31:17picked them up while he was in the Army of Occupation in Germany and had
- 31:19thought for years they'd be worth something. That he had become a millionaire,
- 31:23and for that he had almost lost his life. That one other reason,
- 31:27when missus Miller's plan had miscarried and she'd set him on fire too, he
- 31:33should have remembered the most elementary thing in the world, and that's don't get
- 31:37panicky, don't run even toward water. Just lie down and the roll or
- 31:41wrap yourself in something to smother the fire. I'll bet Sandy and Jill never
- 31:47forget. This is doctor Tim Detective saying, so long until next week at
- 31:59this same time when Sandy Jill and I will bring you by transcription the Mystery
- 32:04of the Dog that Did and Didn't Welcome Back. The most interesting part of
- 32:19this episode, other than the science stuff, is just kind of the audaciousness
- 32:23of the daughter in law, uh you know, basically walks up to a
- 32:30complete stranger of a doctrine says, you know what, I was wondering if
- 32:36you could help me plunder the estate of my father in law. Maybe that'd
- 32:43be something you would be able to assist me with. It's definitely some boldness,
- 32:49But I like this episode really. They do a good job mixing in
- 32:54the plot and the mystery and the educational lessons I think in a way that
- 33:00kids would remember. Of course, you know, listening to this, I
- 33:07can't help but feel of how much more in many ways subdued or cautious children's
- 33:22television and entertainment is in general. To have a storyline like this, you
- 33:29know, it would be like, you know, we'll get sued by somebody
- 33:30or you know, some groups going to complain. But the things are I
- 33:36guess a little more straight up and just telling them, you know what,
- 33:40the real danger this can happen, And I think definitely an appropriate message and
- 33:50really covered some good ground here. Particularly, I think that was a great
- 33:54object lesson on not running while you're on fire. And we do actually have
- 34:00a listener comment from Kevin regarding Doctor Tim, who says, Hi, Atum,
- 34:05I just finished hearing Doctor Tim. Thanks for sharing those. I look
- 34:09forward to the others. What an interesting combination of themes. Glad some of
- 34:15these survived, although I suppose it wouldn't have been along the runner. It
- 34:19was an interestingly different format. Obviously there was a lot of experimentation at what
- 34:24might make a good radio Thanks again for sharing. Well, thanks Kevin.
- 34:29We don't know a whole lot about this series other than there were thirteen episodes
- 34:35made and as best we can tell anyway, and we've got seven of them,
- 34:44and there's not a whole lot of information as to you know, like
- 34:50I said, it was not in the encyclopedia of old time radio. There
- 34:53were some radio. There was some radio in the school programs, so it's
- 35:02possible anyway that this was part of that sort of effort and was produced for
- 35:14just that purpose. Certainly, no big stars in there, so we don't
- 35:22know about the audience or you know, whether there was any thought that there
- 35:27might be additional programs. We just know it was from Monarch, and beyond
- 35:31that, we don't really have any information. So we'll have more to come,
- 35:37though it'll be two weeks. Tell Our next Doctor Tim is next week.
- 35:44No Doctor Tim returning in two weeks due to the lost Johnny Dollar episode.
- 35:50We explained after yours truly Johnny Dollar. All right, and we have
- 35:54one more listener comment, this one coming from Justin, who says thank you
- 36:00for bringing us this series regarding mister Moto. When I was in college,
- 36:07radio stations played OTR detectives in this series was my favorite. Until now I
- 36:13haven't been able to find the show on iTunes. Thank you for all you
- 36:15do to keep old time radio alive and accessible. Well, you're certainly welcome,
- 36:21Justin, and we're glad to bring you this forgotten showing mister Moto.
- 36:25And we'll keep listening for what else we've got to come. All right,
- 36:31Well, that we'll do it for today. We will be back on Monday
- 36:36with a new Johnny Dollar story, and then be sure and join us two
- 36:40weeks from today for the next Doctor Timman story. And tomorrow we have the
- 36:46lineup coming up. Send your comments to box thirteen Great Detectors dot net,
